Speaking to Adom News during a breast cancer awareness float through the principal streets of Hwidiem, the Head of the Labour Ward Department, Deborah Adu Asante, said the hospital has intensified its outreach efforts to ensure early detection and treatment of breast cancer among women in the area.

She noted that the hospital is organizing more community programmes including floats, visits to churches and schools, and free breast screening exercises at the hospital throughout the month of October.

“For us to have an effective fight against breast cancer in Asutifi South, efforts must be intensified,” she said.

A midwife at the hospital, Cecilia Newman, expressed concern about the increasing trend of self-medication among women who experience changes in their breasts.

She advised residents to report any unusual breast symptoms to the hospital for professional examination rather than resorting to self-treatment.

“Self-medication is not the solution to fighting breast cancer. Once you notice any strange change in your breast, please visit the hospital for proper care,” she urged.

The hospital’s initiative forms part of Ghana’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which encourages early detection and preventive health practices to reduce fatalities linked to the disease.

Asutifi South Assembly, chiefs destroy criminal hideout in Hwidiem  https://www.adomonline.com/asutifi-south-assembly-chiefs-destroy-criminal-hideout-in-hwidiem/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 07:34:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586371 The Asutifi South District Assembly, in collaboration with traditional authorities, has cleared a plantain farm in Hwidiem that had reportedly become a hideout for criminals terrorizing residents and travellers.

According to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Benjamin Assabil Donkor, the decision followed intelligence that the farm and its adjoining footpath had become a hotspot for criminal activities.

Speaking to Adom News, Mr. Donkor explained that unsuspecting pedestrians using the route were often attacked by armed men who seized their mobile phones, wallets, money, and other valuables — sometimes threatening to kill victims who resisted.

“We received several reports that criminals had turned that area into their base, attacking people both day and night. We decided to act quickly with the chiefs to destroy the hideout and restore safety,” he said.

The DCE added that the Assembly plans to install streetlights along the stretch to enhance visibility and improve security for commuters.

“We’ll provide proper lighting in the area to ensure residents and road users can move freely and safely, especially at night,” he assured.

The operation, jointly executed by the Assembly and community leaders, has been widely commended by residents, who say the move will help reduce robberies and boost confidence in local security measures.

He spoke in Hwidiem during a ceremony where the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) officially deployed 29 recruits to the Ghana Police Service and 18 to the Ghana National Fire Service.

Mr. Donkor noted that some community police assistants have previously misused the Police Service name to carry out unlawful acts, tarnishing the reputation of the institution.

He stressed that under his watch, any YEA beneficiaries attached to the security services who engage in misconduct will be dealt with decisively.

“Those who use the uniform and the Police Service name to commit unlawful acts will not be spared. We will take firm action to protect the integrity of the institution,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ahafo Regional Director of YEA, Awudu Razak, revealed that a monitoring and evaluation committee has been established to track the performance of beneficiaries on a monthly basis.

He explained that allowances will not be paid to those who are absent without valid reasons and added that repeated absenteeism could lead to outright dismissal.

“We want to ensure value for money. Anyone who fails to report to work consistently will lose their allowance and may eventually be dismissed,” he stated.

Speaking during a community clean-up exercise joined by the District Chief Executive, she expressed concern over the growing disregard for sanitation laws, noting that offenders often go unpunished.

She told Adom News that existing laws provide enough authority for the Assembly to act, yet enforcement remains weak.

“The district has sanitation by-laws, but over the years, their enforcement has been poor. We need to see a renewed commitment to protecting the environment by ensuring that offenders face the necessary consequences,” she said.

The Queen Mother also appealed to the DCE to incorporate sanitation into the Assembly’s broader development agenda, stressing that improved hygiene is key to community progress.

Meanwhile, Pastor Kwasi Attah Agyapong of the Church of Pentecost in Acherensua encouraged residents to prioritise cleanliness, adding that poor sanitation poses serious health and developmental risks.

He called on the community to adopt consistent hygiene practices to support sustainable development in the area.

Girl Child Coordinator raises alarm over sanitary pad shortage in Asutifi South https://www.adomonline.com/girl-child-coordinator-raises-alarm-over-sanitary-pad-shortage-in-asutifi-south/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 14:31:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549456 The Girl Child Coordinator for the Asutifi South Education Directorate in the Ahafo Region, Faustina Xorla, has expressed deep concern about the negative impact of menstrual hygiene challenges on the education of schoolgirls in the Seinchem Circuit.

Speaking to Adom News during the presentation of 384 sanitary pads and 400 exercise books to students from seven junior high schools, Madam Xorla revealed that many girls are forced to use unsafe alternatives such as cement paper, rags, and toilet rolls during their menstruation due to their families’ inability to afford sanitary pads.

The donation, made by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asutifi South, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, benefited students from Manhyia, Sunkwa, Seinchem Islamic, Kwaku Nyumah, Adwumaye, Seinchem R/C, and Seinchem D/A Junior High Schools.

“These unhygienic practices not only endanger the health of the girls but also cause them to miss school, affecting their academic progress,” Madam Xorla stated.

She commended the DCE for his timely support, noting that the donation would help alleviate the challenges many girls face during their periods.

DCE Benjamin Donkor, in his remarks, emphasized that his office is committed to promoting menstrual hygiene in the district.

He added that beyond the provision of pads, the girls also received education on menstrual health—a critical step toward long-term change.

“This initiative is not a one-time gesture. It has become a permanent part of my administration’s support for girls’ education and well-being,” he assured.
