The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has issued a strong warning to its pastors and members to avoid unaccredited tertiary institutions and refrain from using qualifications obtained from such schools.

The caution comes after the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) released a list on Monday, October 20, 2025, naming 50 institutions operating without the required accreditation.

In a statement dated Tuesday, October 21, and signed by the church’s General Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Y. Wengam, the Assemblies of God reminded its pastors to verify the accreditation status of any school with GTEC before enrolling.

“As part of efforts by the Executive Presbytery to rid the church environment of unaccredited degrees and qualifications, pastors are cautioned against enrolling in such institutions or using certificates obtained from them,” the statement said.

The church further stated that any degrees, doctorates, or professional qualifications from unaccredited institutions will not be recognised within the Assemblies of God.

GTEC’s earlier directive, signed by Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director-General of the Commission, revealed that the listed institutions had failed to meet national accreditation and quality assurance standards.

It also warned the public and accredited institutions to avoid engaging with such unapproved entities.

The Assemblies of God leadership urged pastors to uphold integrity and transparency in their educational pursuits, emphasizing that honesty in academic qualifications is essential for credibility in ministry.

Assemblies of God bans use of honorary doctorate titles by clergy https://www.adomonline.com/assemblies-of-god-bans-use-of-honorary-doctorate-titles-by-clergy/ Tue, 19 Aug 2025 12:50:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2568894 The Assemblies of God Church in Ghana has directed its clergy to stop attaching honorary doctorate titles to their names during official and public functions or risk suspension.

The directive, communicated to ministers in a circular issued on July 11, follows a resolution passed by the church’s Executive Presbytery at its May 2024 meeting.

Church leaders explained that the decision aligns with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) regulations on the recognition of academic qualifications.

According to the directive, pastors who have been awarded honorary doctorates—whether from accredited or unaccredited institutions—are prohibited from styling themselves as “Dr.”

Additionally, ministers with earned academic degrees such as bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD qualifications have been advised to submit their certificates to GTEC for authentication before formal recognition can be granted.

The Assemblies of God warned that ministers who defy the directive or breach GTEC’s requirements will face disciplinary measures, including suspension from office.

To set an example, the church cited its General Superintendent, Rev. Stephen Wengam, who announced last year that although he had received an honorary doctorate, he no longer uses the “Dr.” title. Leaders urged other pastors to follow his lead to uphold transparency in ministry.

The announcement comes amid GTEC’s heightened enforcement against the misuse of academic and honorary titles.

General Superintendent of Assemblies of God makes clarion call to members https://www.adomonline.com/general-superintendent-of-assemblies-of-god-makes-clarion-call-to-members/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 12:45:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473295 The Assemblies of God Church Ghana has unveiled its 2025 theme, “Pray Without Ceasing for Supernatural Manifestations,” with a call on its members and leaders to engage in daily prayer to strengthen their spiritual lives and relationship with God.

The theme is drawn from 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

The General Superintendent, Reverend Stephen Yenusom Wengam, announced this during a combined Executive Presbytery (EP) and Key Leaders Capacity-Building and Prayer Retreat at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

The event brought together over 260 influential members of Assemblies of God, including the General Secretary, 58 Executive Presbytery members with their spouses, district pastors, and leaders of AG agencies.

During his address, Rev. Wengam emphasized the need for continuous prayer as a foundational aspect of the church’s spiritual life. He urged members and leaders to engage in daily, heartfelt prayers.

“When we don’t pray as leaders, we kill the spirit of the church, and we eventually lose members,” he said.

Rev. Wengam explained that prayer should not be seen as an occasional activity or mere duty but as an essential, ongoing practice that strengthens the believer’s relationship with God.

“Prayer is a daily necessity, the air we breathe. It’s a vital human need that provokes grace, opens the heavens, and brings the refilling of the Holy Spirit,” he noted.

He further explained that prayer activates spiritual power, releases divine glory, and breaks barriers such as addictions and limitations.

Rev. Wengam urged Assemblies of God pastors, district leaders, and members to align with the 2025 theme by integrating it into their personal and communal worship. He reminded the church’s leadership of their responsibility to model continuous prayer, calling on them to inspire and guide their congregations to embrace the theme wholeheartedly.

The General Superintendent indicated that as the church embarks on a journey to achieve its 2025 theme, it serves as both a call and a commitment for Assemblies of God members to deepen their prayer lives and prepare for a year of renewed spiritual vitality and breakthroughs.

The 2025 theme was chosen after extensive prayer and consultation aimed at fostering a culture of constant prayer throughout Assemblies of God congregations in Ghana. It emphasizes the transformative power of prayer, which is believed to activate angelic intervention, bring forth God’s glory, and enable the church to overcome challenges.

To achieve these aims, the theme focuses on four key areas:

  1. Prayer for Churches: Strengthening the foundation of all Assemblies of God churches through dedicated and consistent prayer.
  2. Fasting and Prayer: Instituting regular periods of fasting and prayer to deepen spiritual commitment.
  3. Prayer for the Harvest of Souls: Interceding for revival and the salvation of new souls.
  4. Prayer for Supernatural Manifestation: Seeking God’s presence and power to perform miraculous signs and wonders.

Assemblies of God pastor hooted at and chased out of church [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/assemblies-of-god-pastor-hooted-at-and-chased-out-of-church-video/ Mon, 20 Dec 2021 21:30:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2060745

Worshippers at the Jesus Assembly at the Hilltop-Ohwimase Branch of Assemblies of God, Ghana on Sunday hooted at and chased away the Ashanti West Regional Superintendent of the Church, Reverend Stephen Yaw Manu.

This was after the man of God, who delivered a sermon at the assembly, decided to announce the suspension of some seven elders of the church.

They were Charles Addai, Godfred Kwakye, Bismark Agyemang Siaw, Peter Owusu, Baffour Akoto, Collins Ofosu Kwarteng and Andrews Sarpong.

A letter to them noted the action had become necessary due to their gross insubordination and indiscipline towards the leadership of Kwadaso District and the Ashanti West Region in spite of several attempts to reason with them.

They are, therefore, banned from attending church in all the branches of the church until further notice.

The angry worshippers also alleged he attempted to make away with cash of about GHC 30,000 which was realised from the church’s annual harvest, hence their action.

READ ON:

Some of them alleged that Rev Manu, who is bent on running the church like a personal property, has taken series of arbitrary decisions which they are not happy about.

They have vowed to stop attending church service and all related activities if the leaders do not rescind their decision to assign new board members and a pastor to the church.
