Assault on JoyNews Crew: Court orders defense to open case https://www.adomonline.com/assault-on-joynews-crew-court-orders-defense-to-open-case/ Fri, 05 Sep 2025 17:18:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575424 The Bekwai Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has dismissed a submission of ‘no case’ filed by the defense counsel for four employees of Edelmetallum Resources Limited, standing trial for the assault of a JoyNews crew investigating illegal mining activities at Manso Asumenya.

The victims included environmental journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor, and his colleagues Majid Alidu, Edward Arkoh, and Nicholas Suantah, who were abducted, assaulted at an undisclosed location, and later abandoned by the accused persons in October 2024.

Nine months into the trial, defense counsel, Elvis Ofori Asante asked the court to dismiss the case on grounds of insufficient evidence.

However, presiding judge, Justice Isaac Appiatu, rejected the submission, ruling that four accused persons must open their defense.

Two other accused were acquitted and discharged due to lack of evidence linking them to the attack.

The prosecution, led by ASP Lloyd Baidoo, is expected to proceed with the case when the court reconvenes on September 19, 2025.

The matter before court

On October 20, 2024, at about 11:30am, the complainants visited the Manso Asumenya area to investigate forest, farmland destruction and water pollution caused by illegal miners of Edelmetallum Resources Limited.

While the four-member crew were undertaking their journalistic investigation at the site, the accused assaulted and subjected them to torture and inhuman treatment.

The accused persons further unlawfully imprisoned the complainants in their own vehicle by placing two heavily built men in their vehicle before accosting them to a remote forest near Asanko Gold mines at Manso Nkran.

Upon the reluctance of complainants refusal to delete their video coverage of the effects of mining activities of the said company, the accused persons in turns begun to punch and slap the complainants resulting to the swollen right eyes of the team leader, Erastus Asare Donkor and drone pilot Majid Alidu, while the two other crew members sustained swollen faces and marks of assault on their bodies.

Subsequently, the accused persons seized the complainants’ mobile tablets, Drone and Samsung SD 128GB cards valued at about GHIC500.00. However, the mobile tablets and the drone were returned to complainants without the Samsung SD 128GB card of their footages.

The accused persons also stole a black pack bag containing; a Lenovo 12 Pro tablet, drone bag with five drone batteries, power bank, J.B.L Headset, Ghana Civil Aviation License and other personal effect valued about Gh35,000 from complainant’s vehicle before abandoning them in the forest.

The complainants later reported the matter to Police at Manso Adubia, who subsequently made the arrests.

The police prosecution charged six accused persons with five counts of assault, conspiracy to commit a crime and stealing. They include Felix Amankwah, Akwasi Frimpong, Frederick Afful, Josuah Ofori, Mumumi Musah and, Daniel Appiah, all employees of Edelmetallum Resources Limited and aged between 23 and 52 years. Five other accused persons remained at large.

When they first appeared in court, all accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and their counsel pleaded with the court to admit them to bail, arguing they have been of good behavior after police inquiry bail.

The court granted the plea for bail with two sureties of GHs100,000 and for all accused persons.

The farmers, who cultivate cocoa, plantain, maize, and cocoyam, alleged that officials of the Bibiani Forestry Commission destroyed their crops, claiming they were farming within a protected reserve.

According to the farmers, their attempt to confront the officers led to assaults, leaving some of them injured and currently receiving treatment at the Anhwiaso Community Hospital.

The incident has heightened tension in the community, with farmers maintaining that the land in question does not fall within the forest reserve.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo, has appealed to farmers to desist from expanding into restricted areas. He assured that existing farms would be protected to prevent further clashes between the Forestry Commission and the community.

The committee was set up by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh following public outrage over a viral video that captured a clash between relatives of a patient and medical staff at the hospital’s emergency unit.

Head of Communications at the Ministry, Tony Goodman, disclosed on Citi FM that the committee had completed its work after speaking to witnesses, including the nurse in charge at the time.

“By Monday, the report will be given to the Minister,” he confirmed.

The altercation, involving one Ralph St. Williams who has been identified as the alleged instigator, sparked widespread concern over the safety of frontline health workers.

Police have since made some arrests, while the Health Minister visited the facility and directed a full-scale inquiry to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.

Meanwhile, one of the victims, Nurse Rejoice Tsotsoo Bortei, has filed a GH₵7 million lawsuit against Mr. Williams.

In her writ at the High Court, she is demanding GH₵5 million in damages for battery and GH₵2 million for defamation, claiming he physically assaulted her and later made damaging comments about her on social media.

Hospital worker arrested over assault of patient https://www.adomonline.com/hospital-worker-arrested-over-assault-of-patient/ Fri, 25 Jul 2025 08:31:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559731 A member of staff at a psychiatric hospital has been arrested in connection with an alleged assault on a patient.

Northamptonshire Police said a woman, from Northampton, was arrested on suspicion of assault and ill-treatment or wilful neglect following an incident on 29 June and has been released on bail.

St Andrew’s Healthcare in Northampton, which is used by the NHS, said it had suspended a number of staff and launched an investigation into the allegation.

The hospital said it was “taking urgent steps to reinforce high-quality care across all wards” after NHS England restricted new referrals to the hospital.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said: “Detectives are investigating a report of an assault which is alleged to have taken place at St Andrew’s Hospital, Northampton, on 29 June.”

“Due to the vulnerability of the victim in this case, officers conducting inquiries as part of this investigation have been in contact with the CQC and local safeguarding leads,” they added.

St Andrew’s Healthcare is a charity that cares for people with complex mental health needs.

The hospital cares for about 600 patients and employs more than 4,000 people across four locations.

Restricted referrals

The CQC said it had carried out an inspection of inpatient services at the hospital on 11 July.

A spokesman for the regulator said: “As a result, CQC took action requiring [St Andrew’s Healthcare] to make immediate, specific improvements around safety.

“They are being monitored closely to make sure this happens, and a report containing the full findings from the inspection will be published on CQC’s website when the usual quality assurance processes have been completed,” they added.

NHS England said St Andrew’s Healthcare looked after patients with “very complex mental health needs from all over the UK”.

“The safety of patients is our first priority and commissioners working together with the CQC have restricted referrals to St Andrew’s Northampton site,” it added.

NHS England said it had “taken immediate action together with St Andrew’s to ensure the charity keeps patients safe, meets contractual obligations, and prioritises a targeted programme of support which operates in line with CQC requirements”.

Nothing justifies assault on Hawa Koomson – Dr Tony Aidoo https://www.adomonline.com/nothing-justifies-assault-on-hawa-koomson-dr-tony-aidoo/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 09:58:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556432 Former Senior Presidential Aide, Dr Tony Aidoo, has strongly condemned the recent attack on former Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, stating emphatically that “nothing justifies the assault against Hawa Koomson.”

Speaking in an exclusive interview on JoyNews, Dr Aidoo criticised the act of violence while acknowledging the former minister’s often controversial political conduct.

“I wouldn’t say Hawa Koomson should not have been there; she has the right to be there. But you see, the very personality and behaviour of Hawa Koomson are so provocative that she invites problems for herself. She acts like a one-woman warrior,” he remarked.

He continued, “A rabble-rouser wherever she goes, but nonetheless, I don’t think she deserves to be attacked. I believe the government must do something about it in terms of identifying the culprits and bringing them to book.”

Dr Aidoo also turned his attention to the broader political implications, calling on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to uphold its founding values.

“The NDC as a political party has a greater moral responsibility—not just because it is now in power, but by virtue of its historical process of becoming. It was built on the principles of probity, accountability, and social justice.”

He urged President John Mahama to ensure that such incidents do not echo past episodes of political violence.

“So the standard of judging the performance of the government, especially of the NDC government, must be higher. Therefore, it is up to President Mahama to ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself, like what happened at Ayawaso West.”

Dr Aidoo acknowledged that while the Ablekuma North incident differed from the infamous Ayawaso West Wuogon violence, the NDC still bore some responsibility.

“Ayawaso was state-sponsored thuggery; Ablekuma North was not. But nonetheless, the NDC still bears responsibility because the people involved are alleged to come from the NDC. There is no evidence, but it is up to the police to identify who the culprits are,” he stated.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Titus-Glover, who said he witnessed the incident, claimed the attack was carried out by thugs deliberately brought into the constituency.

“There is no reason why elections should be marred by violence. Hawa Koomson’s assault was clearly orchestrated. It was planned. You could see those thugs were brought specifically for an action. The boys who attacked her should be found. This is not where we want to see this country,” he stated.

He called for a collective national effort to rid Ghana’s electoral processes of violence.

“We can argue, but violence is not an option,” he added.

The incident occurred at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor, where eyewitnesses reported that unidentified men arrived in a pickup truck and on motorbikes, disrupting the voting process. Madam Koomson, who attempted to defend herself with pepper spray, was reportedly overpowered and assaulted.

Latif Iddrisu vrs IGP trial: 3rd judge adopts proceedings 8 years after life-threatening assault https://www.adomonline.com/latif-iddrisu-vrs-igp-trial-3rd-judge-adopts-proceedings-8-years-after-life-threatening-assault/ Tue, 25 Mar 2025 17:33:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2518785 The Family Court presided over by His Lordship, Abass Abubakari Adams, has adjourned to April 3, 2025, the continuation of the trial involving Multimedia journalist Latif Iddrisu and the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney-General.

Tuesday’s adjournment follows the adoption of the case by the new judge.

His Lordship Abass Abubakari Adams is the third judge to preside over the protracted, high-profile assault case, eight years after the assault.

At the last adjourned date, Senior State Attorney Nancynetta Twumasi Asiamah who has been representing the Inspector General of Police, raised concerns about what she described as the omission of certain submissions she made in court on May 12, 2023.

She also raised concerns about some spelling mistakes that needed to be corrected before the adoption of proceedings by the new judge.

On Tuesday, March 25 when the case was called, the same concerns were raised by the Senior State Attorney.

However, after reading the record of proceedings of May 12, 2023, as captured by his predecessor, His Lordship Abass Abubakari Adams only allowed for the correction of two spelling mistakes to reflect the proceedings of May 12, 2023.

The new judge however, declined to include the said omitted objection by the Senior State Attorney into the court records. He explained that once the said submission was not captured by his predecessor, he felt uncomfortable to be the one to add it to the record of the court.

Samson Lardy Anyenini who is lead counsel for the journalist and Multimedia Group Ltd, explained that the said omitted submission is immaterial given that the Senior State Attorney later “gave in” to the decision of the previous judge to allow the trial to continue, and the second witness of the plaintiff be cross-examined as prayed by lawyers for the journalist.

Latif Iddrisu was brutally assaulted in line of duty by police officers at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service in March, 2017.

The Police Administration has publicly stated that the CCTV cameras at the headquarters of the CID did not capture the assault of the journalist on the night he suffered a featured skull when he was hit in the head with the butt of a gun.

The Police Administration initially committed to compensate the journalist but reneged on that promise, forcing the journalist and his employer, the Multimedia Group to seek justice at the court.

Eight years after sustaining the life-threatening injury as a result of the assault, the journalist who has been undergoing medical treatment in the US state of California, is also fighting for justice at the court.

The Ghana Journalists Association has threatened to go to the ECOWAS court if no significant progress is made on Latif’s case and the assassination of undercover journalist Ahmed Suale.

Latif Iddrisu is to be cross-examined when the case is called again on April 3.

Angmortey pleaded guilty to causing harm under Section 84 of the Criminal Code 1960 (Act 29) and is set to reappear in court on April 10, 2025.

Police Chief Inspector John Brahene, the prosecution officer, said the police received a distress call reporting that a pregnant woman was being severely beaten along Mount Mary Road in Somanya.

Upon arrival, officers found Angmortey assaulting Amedi and promptly arrested him.

Inspector Brahene noted that the complainant, who is six months pregnant, sustained multiple injuries, including swelling on her forehead and bleeding from her lips, neck, and ears. She was given a police medical form and referred to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital for treatment.

Investigations revealed that Amedi had been staying with her aunt for about a month due to the accused’s abusive behavior.

During police interrogation, Angmortey claimed he suspected his girlfriend was involved with another man while he was at work. He said he rushed home but found no one in the room, leading him to her aunt’s house, where he attacked her.

Checks at the Yilo Krobo District Hospital confirmed that the complainant had not lost her unborn child.

Authorities have condemned the attack, stressing the need to address rising cases of domestic violence.

The community has expressed outrage over the incident, calling for justice and stronger measures to protect vulnerable individuals.

Man beats mother-in-law for allowing wife to receive gift from suspected lover https://www.adomonline.com/man-beats-mother-in-law-for-allowing-wife-to-receive-gift-from-suspected-lover/ Mon, 24 Feb 2025 19:57:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2508005 A Harare man violently attacked his mother-in-law after his wife received a Valentine’s gift from another man, accusing her of promoting infidelity.

Elita Mpofu, the victim, claims that her son-in-law, Tinashe Chiyangwa, physically assaulted her after discovering that his wife had received a gift from another man.

The incident, which took place on Valentine’s Day, has since escalated into a legal battle, with Elita dragging Tinashe to the Harare Civil Court to seek justice.

According to Elita, the confrontation began when Tinashe arrived at her home in a fit of rage. He was reportedly yelling and accusing his wife of infidelity after she received a gift from a male friend.

The mother-in-law attempted to intervene and calm the situation, but her efforts only aggravated Tinashe further.

“He pushed me to the ground and started assaulting me. He accused me of encouraging my daughter to engage in promiscuous behavior. Despite my daughter’s attempts to explain that the gift was merely a friendly gesture, he refused to listen,” Elita said.

She sustained a leg injury during the attack, which has left her traumatized and seeking legal recourse.

When given the chance to respond, Tinashe admitted to losing his temper but defended his actions, expressing frustration over the situation.

“I was angry because my mother-in-law allowed another man to give my wife a romantic gift on Valentine’s Day,” he said. “She knows that I paid lobola (bride price) for her daughter, yet she permits other men to approach her.”

While Tinashe acknowledged that his behavior was unacceptable, he emphasized that his anger stemmed from a sense of betrayal and disrespect.

The magistrate granted Elita a peace order, legally prohibiting Tinashe from harassing or approaching her.

The accused are Albert Tetteh Botchway and David Burke,  both 34 and businessmen, and Promise Lamptey, 29, a security guard.

Two other suspects, Awudu Balm and Katanga, remain at large.

The five are accused of kidnapping Kwadwo Agyapong Berry, a businessman, over a failed business investment.

They face charges including conspiracy to commit a crime (kidnapping and assault).

When the case was called, the first accused, Botchway, was absent but submitted a medical report to the court.

The second accused, Burke, and the third accused, Lamptey, were present and both denied the charges against them.

The Presiding Judge, Susana Eduful, granted Burke and Lamptey bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 each with two sureties each.

One surety must earn at least GH¢5,000, while the other must be an immediate family member.

The case has been adjourned to February 3, 2025.

Facts

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, informed the court that the complainant, Kwadwo Agyapong Berry, resides at Amrahia, near Adentan in Accra, while the accused, Botchway, Burke and Lamptey, live at Labadi.

The court was told that Lamptey, Balm and Katanga were employees of Botchway.

On December 14, 2024, Berry, along with Botchway and Burke, took one Benjamin Appiah Boateng to the Laboma Beach to interrogate him about the alleged misappropriation of over $1.6 million from their investment.

According to the prosecution, Boateng was detained at the Laboma Beach, with Botchway present, while the complainant visited on a daily basis to monitor Boateng’s efforts to recover the money.

On December 18, 2024, Burke called the complainant, asking him to come to the Laboma Beach on December 19, 2024, around 7 a.m. for a meeting with him and Botchway.

The prosecution said on December 19, 2024, the complainant drove to the Laboma Beach for the meeting and he was ushered to the office of Botchway by Burke.

The prosecution stated that Botchway deliberately stepped out of the office and shortly after, Lamptey, Balm and Katanga entered the office and instructed Burke to leave.

“At this stage, Lamptey, Balm and Katanga then locked the door to the office, handcuffed the complainant and subjected him to severe beatings, including the use of an electric wire to shock him,” the prosecution said.

The prosecution explained that the complainant reported that Lamptey, Balm and Katanga told him that Boateng had confessed that the $600,000 investment belonging to Botchway and Burke was with him (complainant).

The complainant was reportedly held in Botchway’s office from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on December 19, 2024, until the Police Intelligence Department received a tip-off about the incident and rescued him.
On January 2, 2025, Botchway and Lamptey were arrested for further investigations.

During questioning, Lamptey admitted to the offence but claimed that Boateng had implicated the complainant as his accomplice during their interrogation which led to their actions.

On January 10, 2025, Burke was also arrested for investigations and later granted police enquiry bail.

The prosecution stated that Botchway, Burke and Lamptey had been charged, while efforts continue for the arrest of Balm and Katanga.

There is a limit to human endurance – Adomako Baafi warns after NPP Ejura youth organiser assault https://www.adomonline.com/there-is-a-limit-to-human-endurance-adomako-baafi-warns-after-npp-ejura-youth-organiser-assault/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 15:33:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2462655 Former Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party, Yaw Adomako Baafi has warned against violence being perpetrated against some supporters of the party.

It comes after alleged assault of the Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party in the Ejura Constituency, Abdul Rahman Hudu by a co-panelist, Osman Abubakari Sadiq of NDC on live radio.

Mr. Baafi, says the NPP has taken notice of pockets of violence being perpetrated in some constituencies against NPP members.

“We are not in a brutish state. It is about the law, so the law will take its due course. But as I rightly said, there is a limit to human endurance”, he said.

The Former Communications Officer further added, “it is becoming one too many. We have been accommodating this kind of reckless and irresponsible act. If they keep on doing that I am afraid they will realize that they brought their battle into our field.”

A video in circulation captures the NPP Youth Organiser attempting to defend himself after being attacked by a co-panelist of the National Democratic Congress, Osman Abubakari Sadiq.

The NPP Youth Organiser for Ejura, Abdul Rahman Hudu, claims the co-panelist used a pen to inflict a wound in his face.

Speaking to JoyNews, he claims to have been punched in the face and parts of the body. He further alleged the suspect hit his back with an object, a pain he continues to endure.

Abdul refused to grant a recorded interview but says he is pained all over the body.

Adomako Baafi wants party members to restrain from reprisal attacks as the law enforcement agencies move to resolve the present issue.

He believes the peace council and other organizations will have to move in to ensure sanity.

“I will appeal to the National Peace Council, clergy, chief imam and all who matter, we don’t want such a state to happen. We all need to condemn it and the law must take its due course”, he stated.

Meanwhile, the suspect was invited by the police on Saturday for a statement to be taken as part of investigations.

Joy News sources reveal the police at the Ashanti Regional Command are moving in to take over the matter.

East Legon accident: Arrest and prosecute attackers of journalist – GJA to Police https://www.adomonline.com/east-legon-accident-arrest-and-prosecute-attackers-of-journalist-gja-to-police/ Fri, 18 Oct 2024 09:33:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2461668

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned the assault on Murtala Inusah, a court correspondent for EIB Network, by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako.

The attack reportedly happened on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Accra High Court.

Bishop Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, were in court following a tragic car accident involving their 16-year-old son, Elrad Amoako, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals at East Legon.

While covering the case, Murtala Inusah, who was wearing his Judicial Press Corps ID badge, was attacked by sympathizers unhappy with his filming of the proceedings.

As a result of the attack, Mr. Inusah lost both his phone and his ‘good health’.

In a statement released on Thursday, the GJA described the assault as “devilish” and urged the police to swiftly arrest and prosecute the attackers.

“The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) condemns in the strongest terms the brutal assault on EIB Network court correspondent Murtala Inusah by sympathizers of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. This senseless attack left Mr. Inusah, a Legal Affairs Correspondent, with injuries to his fingers and severe bodily pain. We have also been informed that a court warrant officer who tried to assist him was likewise assaulted, an act we equally condemn without reservation.”

The GJA further called on the Ghana Police Service to take immediate action, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure they face justice.

They also appealed to the Judiciary to impose stringent punishments if the assailants are found guilty.

According to the GJA, Murtala Inusah has already lodged a formal complaint at the Ministries Police Station, and the necessary documents have been submitted.

They urged the Police to expedite their investigation.

The GJA reiterated its stance that such acts of violence against journalists and law enforcement officers performing their duties must be met with the full force of the law.

NDC Disability Desk condemns attack on deaf supporter in Western North https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-disability-desk-condemns-attack-on-deaf-supporter-in-western-north/ Mon, 07 Oct 2024 13:45:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2457539 The NDC Disability Desk has expressed its profound dismay over the recent violent assault on one of its deaf supporters, Samson Adjei, also known as Kofi Kaah, in Asawinso A, located within the Bibiani municipal area of the Western North Region.

The attack was allegedly carried out by individuals affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Reports indicate that, Adjei was riding his motorbike past an NPP campaign float when he was unjustly harassed by the campaigners, who forcibly took plantain from him.

Upon voicing his objections, he was violently pushed to the ground and subjected to a brutal mob attack, during which he was beaten mercilessly, including being struck multiple times with the blunt end of a cutlass.

Due to his deafness, Adjei was unable to hear the threats or insults hurled at him, nor could he verbally respond to his assailants. He collapsed from the severity of the beating and required immediate medical attention.

While recovering, he was found to have significant swelling on his face and body, and his vision was impaired, causing him distress when exposed to light.

The attack is believed to have been motivated by his known affiliation with the NDC.

In response, the NDC Disability Desk has denounced such behaviour as unacceptable and detrimental to the foundational democratic principles that allow citizens to freely associate with political parties without the threat of violence or intimidation.

The Desk called for the  perpetrators of violence to be held accountable to deter future incidents.

It urged the Ghana Police Service in the Western North Region, to treat this case with urgency and take decisive action against those responsible.

The Desk also called upon other security agencies and relevant institutions, such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and the Peace Council, to monitor the situation closely and ensure that justice prevails.

The organization urged Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliations, to unite in condemning such acts of violence and to foster a culture of peace, respect, and understanding.

Uganda’s Bobi Wine injured by policeman – Aide https://www.adomonline.com/ugandas-bobi-wine-injured-by-policeman-aide/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 23:59:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2443670 Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has been injured in the leg in a confrontation with a policeman in uniform, his personal assistant has told the BBC.

Najja Ssenyonjo said the pop star-turned-politician was believed to have been shot and was currently receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital in the capital, Kampala.

He said the incident had occurred while Bobi Wine was on his way to visit his lawyers in Bulindo, which is about 20km (12 miles) north of the city.

A statement from the police said officers on site reported that the opposition leader had stumbled while getting into his vehicle.

An investigation would be conducted to clarify the facts, the statement added.

The X account of Bobi Wine, leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, first broke the news, saying: “@HEBobiwine has been shot in the leg by police in Bulindo.”

Footage has been shared on social media by journalist Solomon Serwanjja, who was at the scene, showing the 42-year-old opposition leader being helped from a building with a bleeding injury from his left shin.

Police say the opposition leader stumbled while getting into his vehicle

“We only heard bullet sounds in the scuffle so it’s doctors to confirm but as of now it’s believed to be a bullet,” Mr Ssenyonjo told the BBC.

The police say Bobi Wine had attended an event at Bulindo and afterwards “he and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession up to Bulindo town.

“However, the police advised against it. Despite their guidance, he insisted on proceeding… closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.

“During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries,” the statement said.

Bobi Wine was first elected to parliament in 2017, and ran against President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 election, which was marred by state repression.

He is popular among young people and has been arrested – and beaten up – numerous times.

The country’s security forces have a long history of pursuing political opponents of President Museveni, who has been in power for almost 40 years.

Jerome Boateng given suspended fine, warning in assault case https://www.adomonline.com/jerome-boateng-given-suspended-fine-warning-in-assault-case/ Fri, 19 Jul 2024 14:16:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2423626 A regional court in the Bavarian capital, Munich, on Friday issued the German World Cup-winning soccer star Jerome Boateng with a warning over alleged intentional bodily harm against his ex-girlfriend.

Ex-Bayern Munich player Boateng received a suspended fine of €200,000 ($227,000), which he would only have to pay if he committed another offense.

What we know about the case

The proceedings center on allegations of violence made by Boateng’s former partner, the mother of his 13-year-old twins, during a vacation together in the Caribbean in 2018.

It was the third retrial of the case. The presiding judge spoke of a toxic relationship between Boateng and his former partner.

Prosecutors had demanded a fine of €1.12 million, while the defense maintained the incident in question amounted only to a scuffle and argued for a more moderate sentence.

Boateng denied hitting his former partner and throwing a lantern and cooling bag at her during the vacation. Early in the trial, he spoke of a “nightmare,” while his lawyer maintained there had been a “fabricated narrative of a wife-beater.”

In a summing up on Friday, presiding judge Susanne Hemmerich said this narrative did not stand.

A ‘miserable relationship’

Before the closing arguments, a mutual acquaintance of Boateng and his ex-girlfriend had given evidence, describing their relationship as emotionally charged and very difficult. The pair had “a miserable relationship,” the man said.

The court had heard that Boateng had pushed his ex-girlfriend away to defend himself and that she had injured him on the lip.

Boateng was found guilty of domestic violence in the case in September 2021 and ordered to pay a €1.8 million euro fine — the highest possible financial damages that could be imposed by the district court in which he was tried. Boateng’s team appealed the verdict.

In November 2022, he was ordered to pay €1.2 million to his former partner after the assault sentence was upheld. That decision was overturned at a regional court because of legal errors, meaning the process had to be restarted.

The long-time Bayern defender recently transferred from the Italian club US Salernitana to the Austrian side Linzer ASK.

The SHS students also reportedly beat a fresher from CCTI, escalating tensions between the two groups.

In response to the initial attack, CCTI students held the SHS student captive and forced the fresher to retaliate with slaps and punches.

A viral video captured some onlookers stepping in to de-escalate the situation and free the victim.

TESCON member sustains head injury after alleged assault by NDC supporters in Kumasi https://www.adomonline.com/tescon-member-sustains-head-injury-after-alleged-assault-by-ndc-supporters-in-kumasi/ Fri, 21 Jun 2024 07:28:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2411435 A second-year student of the Christian Service University has sustained a head injury after he was allegedly assaulted by some supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kumasi.

The incident happened at a public lecture organised to mark the school’s 50th anniversary addressed by former President and 2024 flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama.

The victim, Nana Boakye who is said to be an organizer of the NPP’s students’ wing, TESCON, is alleged to have retorted to Mr Mahama’s description of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign as a “concert party” in his speech.

The NDC flagbearer, delivering his lecture at the Christian Service University, took a swipe at his NPP opponent, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Ghanaians are in dire straits and this is not the time for comedy. This is not the time for a concert party about passing a mystical steer to somebody” Mr Mahama said.

Many of the people gathered at the public lecture applauded the jab, but the TESCON Organiser of the NPP at the University was unhappy and jeered at it.

Nana Boakye allegedly retorted to the statement to the hearing of people seated with him. But an NDC supporter did not take his statement lightly.

Nana Boakye narrated what happened to him.

“I also responded and said, ‘Mahama wo boa’ na wo b3 wi’ [Meaning Mahama you’re lying, you will lose]. Later on, I saw a macho man who approached me and gave me a warning that I should be careful. So, I also asked him ‘What have I done’? And the moment I asked him the question, he came directly and slapped me in front of the former President. So on our way out of the auditorium, when we got to the main entrance of the auditorium, I heard another slap. Out of that, I was not able to see anything, and I also saw one guy who held my hand backwards, and they started beating me in my stomach, my head and stuff like that.”

The second-year student of Communications has his head wrapped in a bandage and a splint also supports his arm.

An attempt to rescue him proved futile, as some irate party people broke into an office where he was kept.

Meanwhile, the NPP in the Ashanti Region says it is appalled by the situation. Spokesperson, Paul Yandoh expressed disappointment.

The victim has yet to file a complaint to the Police.

A heated altercation occurred at Eagle FM in Walewale last night when Musah, the son of the North East Regional Council of Elders chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), allegedly attacked a party member.

Musah is reported to have stormed the studio and attacked Haadi, also known as Yaagsim, during a live broadcast.

Haadi, a resident of Kperiga, was discussing the controversial election between Hajia Lariba Abudu Zuwera and Dr. Mahama Tia Abdul Kabiru.

The dispute stems from a close election in which Dr. Kabiru narrowly defeated Hajia Lariba by 145 votes to 138, leading to the matter being taken to the Tamale High Court.

As Haadi commented on the court case on air, Musah entered the studio in anger and began assaulting him.

The attack prompted a swift response from local NPP youth, who mobilized to confront Musah.

However, Musah had left the premises before they arrived, avoiding a potential escalation of the situation.

The show’s host, DJ Hakim, was reportedly unable to prevent the initial attack but managed to shield Haadi from further harm until the situation deescalated.

The attack has sparked widespread discussion in Walewale about the party’s handling of internal disputes and the security of media personnel during such sensitive times.

Model sues over Cannes red carpet ‘assault’ https://www.adomonline.com/model-sues-over-cannes-red-carpet-assault/ Fri, 31 May 2024 14:40:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2402952

A Ukrainian model says she has filed a legal complaint against organisers of the Cannes Film Festival after alleging she was assaulted by a security guard on the red carpet.

Sawa Pontyjska was one of several guests who were filmed being challenged by the same steward at the prestigious French event.

Singer Kelly Rowland also complained, while footage of the guard with South Korean actress Yoona and Dominican actress Massiel Taveras also went viral.

Pontyjska, a presenter for FashionTV, told BBC News she was “brutally” restrained as she tried to enter the cinema with a legitimate ticket for the premiere of Marcello Mio.

On Wednesday, she posted pictures of documents accusing the festival of “physical assault and psychological damage”. She said her reputation had also been harmed and is seeking 100,000 euros (£85,000) in damages.

Festival organisers have not responded to requests for comment.

A video of the incident, which happened on 21 May, has been viewed more than 16 million times on TikTok.

It shows Pontyjska at the top of the steps to the Palais des Festivals apparently being ushered in by the female guard, who then puts both arms around her.

The pair briefly struggled and Pontyjska almost dropped to the ground, before she tried to go back down the steps and was stopped by more security personnel and taken inside.

Pontyjska told BBC News she had been put in a “bear hug” and felt scared.

“I was trying to escape from this lock. I went down and I started to run away on the stairs because it was the way back [out],” she said.

“She was trying to push me in[side], so nobody can see what she’s doing with me. Then she kicked me out through the back door.”

Pontyjska said she was not doing anything wrong, and had since tried to contact the organisers to request an apology but had not received a response.

Her legal complaint said she was “violently challenged by one of a group of security guards” in front of “thousands of people”.

The use of physical force caused “acute pain”, and she also suffered “psychological trauma”, she wrote.

The unnamed guard made headlines during the two-week festival, including for a heated exchange when she tried to usher Rowland up the stairs at the same premiere.

The former Destiny’s Child singer later told the Associated Press: “The woman knows what happened. I know what happened. I have a boundary, and I stand by those boundaries and that is it.”

She continued: “There were other women that attended that carpet who did not quite look like me and they didn’t get scolded or pushed or told to get off. I stood my ground, and she felt like she had to stand hers.”

Taveras appeared to push the guard after repeatedly being hurried up the red carpet, while the same security worker was accused by Yoona’s fans of being overbearing as she ushered the South Korean star inside.

Cannes is known for having strict rules for guests on the red carpet.

Writing in the wake of last week’s events, the Hollywood Reporter’s Chris Gardner said most attendees are “always rushed down the carpet and up the stairs”.

He added: “For the most part, the job of security is to keep the flow of traffic moving and get everyone in their seats by the scheduled start time.”

More leeway is given to actors from the films being premiered, members of the jury, celebrities representing the festival’s sponsors, other major A-listers, or beloved festival veterans, he wrote.

Ghana Water Company staff locked up, assaulted for disconnecting defaulter https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-water-company-staff-locked-up-assaulted-for-disconnecting-defaulter/ Fri, 10 May 2024 19:06:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2393049 A staff of the Ghana Water Limited in the Ashanti South unit has been physically assaulted by a customer for disconnecting water supply to his home after allegedly defaulting on bills.

The staff is reported to have disconnected supply to the home of the customer after realizing he owed the company 500 Ghana cedis.

The customer, identified only as Kobby, confronted the worker on why he had cut supplies to the house.

Despite the staff explaining he was mandated to do so, Kobby reportedly locked him up in the gated compound house and assaulted the Ghana Water staff.

The worker placed a distress call to the office where management of the company together with police officers from Suntreso moved in to rescue him.

The incident, said to have occurred in Bronikrom near Abrepo in the Ashanti region, saw the staff sustain back and waist pains.

The culprit has since been arrested as police investigate the incident.

Speaking with Luv News in an interview, Public Relations Officer of the Water Company in Ashanti, Ebenezer Padi Narh, indicated the workers, particularly meter readers, are living in trepidation.

But he says the company is poised to take on any customer who thwarts the operations of the company, while assuring safety for their workers.

Jonathan Majors: Disney actor found guilty of assaulting girlfriend https://www.adomonline.com/jonathan-majors-disney-actor-found-guilty-of-assaulting-girlfriend/ Tue, 19 Dec 2023 10:46:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2334266 US actor Jonathan Majors has been found guilty of assaulting his then-girlfriend after a trial in New York.

The jury found Majors, known for playing Kang in the Marvel films, attacked British choreographer Grace Jabbari during an altercation in March.

She told the court she was left with a fractured finger, bruising, a cut behind her ear and “excruciating” pain.

Majors, 34, faces up to a year in jail, and has been dropped from starring roles in forthcoming Marvel movies.

The six-person jury’s verdict was announced on Monday following three days of deliberations.

As their decision was read in court, Majors pursed his lips and looked downwards but gave no other reaction, according to reporters in court.

Following the verdict, a spokesperson for Marvel said the studio will not be moving forward with Majors on future projects.

The crime took place when the couple were in a car in New York and Ms Jabbari saw a text message from another woman on Majors’ phone, which said: “Wish I was kissing you right now.”

According to prosecutors, when she took the phone, he then grabbed her, twisted her arm behind her back and hit her in the head to get it back.

“I felt like a hard blow across my head,” Ms Jabbari testified.

The jury found him guilty of two of the four domestic violence charges that he was facing.

He was found guilty of assault by recklessly causing physical injury, as well as harassment.

But the jury declined to convict him on charges of aggravated harassment and assault with intent to cause physical harm.

The prosecution painted the assault as the latest escalation in Majors’ attempts to “exert control” over his girlfriend through physical and emotional violence. They shared voice recordings and text messages between the former couple with the jury.

“I’m a monster. A horrible man. Not capable of love,” the actor sent in a text in September 2022 while threatening to kill himself.

In audio from an argument that same month, Majors told her she needed to act more like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama, the wives of Martin Luther King and former President Barack Obama.

“I am doing great things, not just for me but for my culture and the world,” he said, adding that she would need to “make sacrifices” for him.

Majors did not testify. His lawyer had argued the actor was the victim, and that Ms Jabbari assaulted him in a jealous rage after seeing the text message in the car.

Majors, who also starred in Creed III, countersued her in June, alleging that she was the aggressor, but prosecutors declined to charge her due to a lack of evidence.

Sentencing will be in February. The judge also issued a new protection order, requiring him to have no contact with Ms Jabbari.

She was “gratified to see justice served” by the verdict, her lawyer said, adding that it should serve as an inspiration for other abused women to come forward.

“Ms Jabbari testified publicly and truthfully, even though reliving these traumatic events on the witness stand was obviously painful,” lawyer Ross Kramer said in a statement to BBC News.

A lawyer for Majors said in a statement that his legal team is “grateful” that the jury notably did not find that he had intended to cause physical injuries to Ms Jabbari.

“Mr Majors is grateful to God, his family, his friends, and his fans for their love and support during these harrowing eight months,” said lawyer Priya Chaudhry.

“Mr Majors still has faith in the process and looks forward to fully clearing his name.”

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, whose office brought the criminal charges, said after the verdict that the psychological and emotional abuses carried out by the movie star were “far too common across the many intimate partner violence cases we see each and every day”.

Ms Jabbari had met Majors two years earlier on the set of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, where she was a movement coach.

After his arrest, Marvel pushed back until 2026 the release of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, in which Majors had been due to play the lead villain.

Another film, Magazine Dreams, which had been touted as a possible Oscar contender, also had its release postponed following the allegations.

Habib Shaibu, charged with causing harm, intentionally interfering with ECG’s distribution system, and stealing unspecified electricity power, pleaded not guilty.

Counsel for Shaibu prayed for bail.

The prosecution, led by Mr Paul Assibi Abarigah, General Manager in charge of prosecution, opposed the grant of bail.

The court presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah turned down the bail application saying the conduct of the accused person was too intimidating.

Shaibu is expected to appear before the court on November 17. 2023.

Mr Abariga, the prosecutor, said the complainant Frank Afako was a staff of ECG Revenue Protection Unit, whilst the accused person, Habibi Shaibu, was a businessman residing at Agyringano.

The prosecution told the court that Shaibu owned a mobile phone shop at Ashalley Botwe, Accra.

It said on January 4, 2023, the complainant and his team visited the accused person’s shop and inspected his ECG meter.

After inspection, the team detected that the accused person had allegedly used 2.5 cable to tap power before the ECG installed prepaid meter in his shop.

The prosecution said the complainant then disconnected the power and issued summons for the accused person to report at ECG office at Legon, but the accused failed to do so.

It said on April 4, 2023, the complainant and his team revisited the accused person’s shop and realised that he had removed the installed ECG prepaid meter and had installed ECG postpaid meter.

The prosecution said when Shaibu was asked the whereabout of the prepaid meter that had been removed, he could not answer.

It said the leader of the team ordered the complainant to disconnect the power and remove the postpaid meter.

When the complainant removed the meter and went outside the shop, the accused person became furious and assaulted him physically, with blood oozing from the complainant’s mouth.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant was rushed to Ogbojo Poly Clinic for treatment, but later referred to the Tema General Hospital.

The prosecution said the matter was referred to the ECG investigation unit and a police medical form was issued to the complainant.

The complainant returned the medical form and same was endorsed by a medical officer from the Tema General Hospital.

During investigation, the police visited the scene (accused person’s shop) and it was discovered that the accused person had reconnected ECG power directly and using same for business.

The accused person was invited to assist investigation.

The prosecution said on August 30, 2023, the accused person reported himself and investigation caution statement was obtained from him.

The accused persons, aged between 17 and 20, were charged on two counts of conspiracy to commit crime to wit assault and assault contrary to section 84 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Francis Tamanja told the court that the complainant, also a student and resident of Sawaba, a suburb of Bolgatanga, received a phone call from one of the accused persons on September 30, 2023, to the effect that one of them had accused her of having an amorous relationship with her boyfriend.

Antony to delay Manchester United return after assault allegations https://www.adomonline.com/antony-to-delay-manchester-united-return-after-assault-allegations/ Sun, 10 Sep 2023 18:13:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2292506 Manchester United winger Antony has agreed to delay his return to the club “to address allegations” of assault made against him.

The 23-year-old was due back to training on Monday after being dropped from Brazil’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru.

But United say it has been agreed with the player that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the matter.

Antony denies all the allegations.

“Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony,” said a club statement.

“Players who have not participated in international matches are due back in training on Monday.

“However, it has been agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.

“As a club we condemn acts of violence and abuse. We recognise the importance of safeguarding all those involved in this situation, and acknowledge the impact these allegations have on survivors of abuse.”

A police investigation has been opened following allegations of domestic abuse against his former girlfriend.

He is also facing further allegations of assault made by a woman in an interview with a Brazilian TV channel.

Antony appeared on Brazilian TV on Friday, saying “I never attacked any woman” and added that “the truth will come out”.

He issued a statement on Sunday saying: “I have agreed with Manchester United to take a period of absence while I address the allegations made against me.

“This was a mutual decision to avoid distraction to my teammates and unnecessary controversy for the club.

“I want to reiterate my innocence of the things I have been accused of, and I will fully co-operate with the police to help them reach the truth. I look forward to returning to play as soon as possible.”

Antony has been accused of attacking his former girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin “with a headbutt” in a Manchester hotel room on 15 January, leaving her with a cut head that needed treatment by a doctor.

She alleges she was also punched in the chest, causing damage to a silicone breast implant, which required corrective surgery.

Antony previously said on social media about Cavallin’s claims: “I can calmly state that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and the other evidence that will be produced demonstrate that I am innocent of the accusations made.”

Ingrid Lana, a 33-year-old banker, has also claimed in a short clip released by Brazil’s Record TV that she hit her head when “pushed against a wall” by Antony at his house in Manchester in October 2022.

Both Greater Manchester Police and Sao Paulo Police are looking into the claims.

Antony did not play in the international break after the Brazilian football federation said he had been withdrawn from their squad after “facts became public” that “need to be investigated”.
