Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr. Vanderpuye said his decision would depend solely on whether the current Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, decides to seek re-election or not.

“If the current Chairman, my very good brother Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is not contesting, I will contest,” he declared.

His comments come amid growing speculation that Mr. Asiedu Nketia is considering joining the NDC’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The development has reignited discussions within the party about possible successors to the experienced chairman, who has played key leadership roles in the NDC for decades.

Ascend to the highest pinnacle – Asogli State blesses Asiedu Nketia  https://www.adomonline.com/ascend-to-the-highest-pinnacle-asogli-state-blesses-asiedu-nketia/ Thu, 16 Oct 2025 06:47:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588963 Chiefs of Asogli State have blessed Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), wishing him success and ascension to the highest pinnacle in his endeavours.

Togbe Adzie Lakle Howusu XII, Awafiaga of Asogli State, extended the blessings and good wishes to Mr Nketia for coming to thank them after the party’s 2024 victory, while acknowledging his leadership and dedication to the governing NDC.

Mr Nketia visited the Asogli Palace in Ho on Wednesday as part of his “Thank You Tour.”

“May the gods of our land and the God Almighty above give you the strength, give you good health and protect you so that you succeed in all that you do…

“We are so grateful that, as a mark of tradition, you didn’t come empty-handed. You’ve given us something. We’ll hold a libation and let our forefathers know that you are still the Chairman of the great party and that they should protect you. And wherever you want to go, may you ascend to the highest pinnacle.”

Mr Nketia, on his part, expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people of the area for their electoral support to the NDC, highlighting the achievement of a massive win in the 2024 polls.

He underscored the significance of face-to-face communication, saying that though the President earlier visited Ho, the Volta Region’s capital, to thank the region’s people, coming again as the party’s Chairman was a reflection of past practices during the late former President John Rawlings’ tenure.

“And after thanking you, the other reason I think is that these types of meetings constitute the lifeblood of every organisation.

“Those who have been in NDC for long realise that during President Rawlings’ time, every six months, we deployed all government appointees, ministers and chief executive officers to reach out to all the constituencies in the country to explain government policies, the implementation, where we have reached and then also take feedback on the policies to government.

“And by so doing, we were always able to carry the public along. For some time now, we’ve missed that opportunity,” Mr Nketia said.

He advocated for the reinstating of these outreach programmes to maintain a strong connection with the public and assured them of his commitment to continue being an active and engaged leader.

Mr James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, described Mr Nketia’s visit to Ho and other constituencies as part of his ongoing nationwide Thank You tour as apt, saying the party, during the campaign period, called on the Volta region and Ghana to labour communally for victory, and it was just right to go back as a party to show gratitude.

He referenced Luke 17:11-19 of the Bible to underline the need to show gratitude and to assure the electorate that the NDC would not wait till the election year to come to them, canvassing for votes.

“I want to be known as a grateful Chairman” — Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/i-want-to-be-known-as-a-grateful-chairman-asiedu-nketia/ Wed, 15 Oct 2025 09:07:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588617 National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has dismissed suggestions that his ongoing nationwide “Thank You” tour is part of a strategy to launch a presidential campaign ahead of the 2028 elections.

Addressing party members and traditional authorities in Hohoe, Volta Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah explained that the tour is a continuation of the NDC’s tradition of expressing appreciation to Ghanaians following elections.

He said it also serves to reaffirm the party’s dedication to accountability and good governance.

“I want to be known as a grateful National Chairman. This tour is about continuing our culture of engagement and gratitude. Those who disagree with me, please continue, it’s part of our contest of ideas,” he said.

According to him, the initiative is designed to promote unity within the party, address internal issues, and keep supporters informed about government programmes.

He emphasized that national initiatives, including efforts to combat illegal mining and corruption, take time to show tangible results but remain top government priorities.

Touching on development projects in the Volta Region, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah mentioned the ongoing work at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and the Eastern Corridor Road as examples of the government’s continued commitment to regional growth.

“Our focus is on building trust through action,” he stressed. “We urge our supporters to stay united and keep faith with the government so we can deliver fully on our promises.”

The NDC chairman’s “Thank You” tour is expected to cover all 16 regions, recognizing the contributions of party leaders, cadres, and grassroots members who played a part in securing the NDC’s victory in the 2024 general elections.

While some political observers view the tour as a subtle step toward a possible presidential bid, Asiedu Nketia insists his intentions are rooted in gratitude and party unity, not personal ambition.

“This initiative is our way of showing appreciation to the people who have stood with Mr. Asiedu Nketia and the party through thick and thin. It’s also an opportunity to listen to their concerns and reaffirm our commitment to their welfare,” he stated.

Mr. Sumaila also expressed strong optimism about the future of the party under Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s leadership.

He noted that should Mr. Asiedu Nketia be given the nod to lead the NDC as its presidential candidate in the 2028 general elections, the party would secure a resounding victory.

“We believe that his experience, charisma, and dedication to the NDC make him the right person to lead the party to victory in 2028. The grassroots are solidly behind him,” he added.

The thank-you tour is expected to cover several communities across the Volta Region, as part of a broader strategy to galvanize support ahead of the next general elections.

According to the survey, Asiedu Nketia enjoys the support of 50% of respondents, while Dr. Bawumia garners 45%. Another 5% indicated they would back a different candidate.

The results point to a closely contested race, with the NDC leader holding a slim five-point lead over the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.

Analysts say the findings highlight the evolving dynamics of Ghana’s political landscape, as both the governing NPP and the opposition NDC begin early preparations for the 2028 elections.

Global InfoAnalytics noted that the narrow margin underscores the likelihood of a fiercely contested race should this matchup materialize.

Martin Kpebu reveals biggest hurdle to Asiedu Nketia’s “presidential ambition” https://www.adomonline.com/martin-kpebu-reveals-biggest-hurdle-to-asiedu-nketias-presidential-ambition/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 11:28:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580532 Private legal practitioner and political commentator, Martin Kpebu, has expressed confidence in the presidential prospects of National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, popularly known as “General Mosquito.”

According to Kpebu, the major hurdle facing Mr Nketiah is not his competence or political experience but rather public perceptions about his appearance.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, he acknowledged that the NDC Chairman commands broad support within the party. However, some critics continue to question whether he possesses what they describe as a “presidential look,” a concern reportedly raised in the past by the late former President Jerry John Rawlings.

“The elephant in the room is that, when it comes to optics generally, speaking bluntly, the issue is that Asiedu Nketiah doesn’t usually look the part. But I’m sure it can be managed, because then we look beyond optics,” Kpebu stated.

He cautioned against reducing leadership to appearances, pointing to the example of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“People have said it several times that Akufo-Addo came with the accent and the swag but ended up as the worst President with corruption,” he remarked.

Despite the optics debate, legal practitioner Martin Kpebu maintained that NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah stands a strong chance of becoming president if he decides to contest and wins the party’s flagbearership.

“It’s possible for him [Asiedu Nketiah] to become President, because the NDC still has a lot of goodwill. If you look at the difference between the votes garnered by John Mahama and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, it’s over 1.6 million votes,” Kpebu explained.

His remarks add to the broader national conversation about succession and leadership within the NDC ahead of the 2028 elections.

Speculation about Mr Nketiah’s future has intensified since his post-2024 election “thank-you tour.” While some observers see it as an early attempt to position himself for a potential 2028 bid, the NDC Chairman has clarified that the tour was simply to show appreciation to party members for their dedication and hard work.

We’re not serious as a political party if… – Asiedu Nketia  https://www.adomonline.com/were-not-serious-as-a-political-party-if-asiedu-nketia/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 09:39:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580490 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has stated that it is premature for any member of the party to campaign to lead into the 2028 elections.

“If you campaign to replace President John Dramani Mahama when the government has not even attained a year in office and for that achieve its goals, then we are not serious as a political party,” he stated.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Graphic on his ‘Thank You’ tour of the country, he said all those with presidential ambitions must concentrate on supporting President Mahama to achieve his agenda of resetting the economy and improving the lives of the citizenry.

Mr. Nketia called for unity and discipline to sustain the party’s momentum and avoid the kind of infighting that, in his view, is weakening the opposition.

Context

Mr Nketia’s ‘Thank You’ tour has stirred controversy in political circles, with some suggesting that the three-day programme was less about gratitude and more about positioning for a future presidential bid.

The September 17 to 19, 2025, tour across 16 constituencies in the Eastern Region has been officially marketed as a follow-up appreciation effort on behalf of the NDC.

Party officials say it was meant to recognise the contributions of executives, cadres, and grassroots organisers who worked tirelessly for the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections and assure the electorate that the NDC will keep to its promises.

Mr. Nketia said the party was reaching out to all the electorate, stressing it was too early for any member of the party to begin campaigning either for the party’s flagbearer position or for a national executive role.

Credibility

He recalled that in the run-up to the 2024 elections, he (Asiedu Nketiah) announced that the party was going to run a three-pronged campaign with President Mahama and the then running mate, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, focusing on the presidential campaign at different levels while he led the campaign for parliamentary candidates.

He explained that each campaign was tailored to the needs of every constituency, which resulted in the party flipping over a number of seats.

Mr Asiedu Nketia said during the electioneering, he promised to visit the constituencies to thank them for the confidence reposed in the NDC, adding that he did not have to wait for the next elections.

“Credibility is important in politics. I don’t have to wait for the next elections to visit the constituencies to thank them and campaign at the same time,” he stated.

The NDC chairman pointed out that he was not an armchair chairman but someone who took the frontline in politics by actively campaigning.

“It is therefore important to reach out to not only our supporters but the electorate as well,” he stated.

Elections

As to when the party would go to the polls to elect its leaders and flag bearer, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the party was yet to take those decisions, stressing that “our preoccupation is to support President Mahama deliver on his promises.”

He emphasised that anyone campaigning to be the party’s flag bearer would be doing so in vain since the delegates to elect the flag bearer would change when the party began its internal elections.

He urged party members to remain calm and united as President Mahama’s administration gradually settled to create more opportunities for appointments and appealed for understanding as the leadership of the party was working to ensure all loyal members got the opportunity to serve.

Asiedu Nketia explains purpose of his “Thank You” tour https://www.adomonline.com/asiedu-nketia-explains-purpose-of-his-thank-you-tour/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 07:21:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580425 National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia has clarified the purpose of his ongoing “Thank You Tour,” which has generated both excitement and speculation within political circles.

The three-day tour, running from September 17 to 19, covers 16 constituencies in the Eastern Region. Officially, the visit is meant to acknowledge the contributions of party executives, cadres, and grassroots organisers toward the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections.

Some observers, however, believe the exercise could also serve to raise Mr. Asiedu Nketia’s political profile for the future.

Addressing party members in the Akuapem North Constituency, the NDC Chairman explained how responsibilities were divided during the elections.

“We realised that the elections had two main fronts, the presidential and parliamentary. It was important for President Mahama to focus entirely on the presidential contest, while my team worked to secure parliamentary seats,” he said.

He noted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) shifted its attention to parliamentary contests, perceiving Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign as weakened.

“Their strategy was to win majority control in Parliament, even if President Mahama emerged victorious, in order to weaken his governance,” he added.

To counter this, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the NDC deliberately targeted challenging constituencies and mobilised grassroots structures to strengthen its position.

“We went into areas that were considered NPP strongholds, engaged with communities, and by God’s grace, before the elections ended, we were able to capture many constituencies from their hands,” he recounted.

Reiterating the essence of his tour, he stressed: “This tour is not about the presidential campaign, it is about appreciating the efforts of our people who worked tirelessly to win seats in Parliament and to strengthen the party’s position.”

Galamsey: Declaring state of emergency dangerous – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-declaring-state-of-emergency-dangerous-asiedu-nketia/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 07:13:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571535 National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has opposed calls for Ghana to declare a state of emergency to address illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, warning that such a move could threaten the country’s democratic foundations.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr. Nketia acknowledged that galamsey remains a serious national challenge but argued that suspending constitutional governance in the fight against it could cause more harm than good.

“Work is ongoing to deal with the galamsey problem, and we hope solutions will be found. But I don’t support the idea of declaring a state of emergency. In your frustration, you can call for measures that, when implemented, you may later regret,” he cautioned.

He stressed that many advocates of such drastic action may not fully understand the risks involved.

“If you declare a state of emergency to fight galamsey, you suspend the constitution. Security forces can shoot and kill at will. How do you even confirm that those pulling the triggers are the ones actually fighting illegal mining? That becomes another problem,” he explained.

Mr. Nketia urged Ghanaians to pursue constructive, lawful, and sustainable solutions, emphasizing that the fight against galamsey requires reforms guided by consensus and anchored in constitutional rule.

He reiterated that the way forward must be rooted in democracy and the rule of law, not extraordinary measures that risk undermining Ghana’s stability.

Asiedu Nketia reacts to alleged plot to remove suspended Chief Justice https://www.adomonline.com/asiedu-nketia-reacts-to-alleged-plot-to-remove-suspended-chief-justice/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 06:48:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571514 National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has dismissed claims that the Mahama-led administration is attempting to remove suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

Known popularly as General Mosquito, Mr. Nketia explained that the executive has not taken any action to oust the Chief Justice but is focused on fulfilling its constitutional mandate.

“The executive has done nothing regarding the removal of the Chief Justice,” he told Accra-based Citi TV. “If anything at all, the executive is only fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities. To my knowledge, there has been no deliberate move to push her out.”

His comments come amid public debate over perceived tensions between the judiciary and other state institutions. Addressing these concerns, Mr. Nketia emphasized that judicial independence is not under threat.

“The judiciary is not being attacked. What we are witnessing is a reform of state institutions,” he said. “Where there are challenges within the judiciary, reforms are necessary to ensure the institution can properly discharge its constitutional role.”

He added that institutional reforms are essential for strengthening democracy, noting that each arm of government must operate effectively within its constitutional boundaries.

On April 22, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo after a prima facie case was established from three petitions alleging misconduct and incompetence.

Under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, the president may suspend a Supreme Court judge upon such a case and, in consultation with the Council of State, appoint a committee to investigate. Following this provision, President Mahama set up a five-member panel chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, with members including Justice Samuel Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah-Dzisah.

Justice Torkornoo is currently challenging her suspension and potential removal at the ECOWAS Court of Justice. She has stated that resignation is not an option and intends to pursue all legal avenues to seek justice.

He stated, “Politics at its best is service to the people, and the African Political Parties Summit 2025 will be remembered not just for its hospitality, but for having set in motion a process of political renewal and continental unity.”

Mr. Nketia also took the opportunity to thank all participants of the summit for attending, as well as for standing in solidarity with Ghana at a time when the nation is mourning the loss of eight public servants in a ghastly helicopter crash, including the Minister of Defence, Dr. Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

The African Political Parties Summit officially ended today, August 14, 2025, having provided a vital platform for the convergence of all political parties on the continent of Africa, beginning August 12, 2025.

Speaking at the Adua funeral rite for the late Member of Parliament, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, Mr Asiedu Nketia urged NDC members to avoid internal wrangling over who should replace the deceased legislator.

“We thank our brothers in the NPP for declaring that they will not contest us in Tamale Central. Now the challenge is ours, whether we will fight among ourselves over who should replace Murtala. On behalf of the party, I want to say, let us not rush in choosing his successor,” he cautioned.

The NPP, on Monday, August 11, announced its withdrawal from the race, citing the need to avoid further political division during a period of national mourning following Dr Mohammed’s death in a helicopter crash on August 6.

The tragedy, which also claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, three other high officials, and three servicemen, has left the Tamale Central seat vacant, triggering the constitutional requirement for a by-election.

I was meant to be on board – Asiedu Nketia breaks silence on helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-meant-to-be-on-board-asiedu-nketia-breaks-silence-on-helicopter-crash/ Sat, 09 Aug 2025 05:56:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565212 National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has revealed that he was originally meant to be aboard the military helicopter that crashed and killed eight people.

However, due to a last-minute change of plans, he delegated his Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, to replace him.

General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, revealed this while addressing a gathering as the nation continues to mourn the deceased.

“Allah does what he wants. I was supposed to be on the flight, but I asked my vice chairman, Dr. Sarpong, to represent the party, and he agreed,” he recounted.

Reflecting on the tragedy, he urged people to trust in divine will, noting that no one can predict or alter fate.

“In human reasoning, you might think that if I hadn’t sent Sarpong, he would still be alive. But who knows? If it was his time, something else could have happened, even in Accra. We don’t question what Allah has ordained; in all things, we give thanks,” he said.

He added that perhaps the disaster prevented an even worse outcome, offering a perspective that has comforted some of those grieving.

This disclosure adds to the growing list of people, including President John Mahama and Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, who had initially been expected to participate in the event.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi District of the Ashanti Region.

The occupants were killed after the military Z-9 helicopter caught fire and burned beyond recognition.

The victims included Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah; Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong; NADMO Deputy Director-General Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the crash to determine its cause.

You should know better – MP tells Asiedu Nketia for calling EC incompetent [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/you-should-know-better-mp-tells-asiedu-nketia-for-calling-ec-incompetent-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:09:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548797 Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has criticised National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, for his persistent attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC), urging him to rather demonstrate leadership.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the MP said someone with Asiedu Nketia’s political experience should know better.

“Asiedu Nketia has done politics for long. He should be the one showing us the right thing. You don’t go around accusing the EC of being incompetent while you are the ones creating the problems” he said.

He warned that if these tensions are not properly addressed, it could lead to dangerous consequences for the country’s democracy.

“If this issue is not resolved, it can bring bigger problems. Every government may want to have their own EC, and that’s not good for democracy.”

Commenting on the possibility of a petition to the presidency for the removal of the EC Chair, Jean Mensa, he said:

“With what they are doing and saying, it won’t be shocking at all. But even if it gets there, I hope the judges and the committee that may look into the issue will rise to the occasion and serve the interest of the nation.”

He also alleged that the NDC has a history of pushing for the removal of key figures in state institutions.

“Their actions show that they will even be behind removing the EC Chair, just like they did to the Chief Justice.”

Baffour Awuah added that Ghanaians are closely observing the behaviour of the NDC and will respond at the right time.

“Ghanaians are watching Asiedu Nketia and his NDC people who are eager to see the removal of the EC. But when the time for elections comes, they will show you where power truly lies.”

His reaction follows Asiedu Nketia’s recent press briefing in which he described the EC’s leadership as unfit for purpose and demanded their removal, citing a pattern of alleged electoral mismanagement.

‘Loyalty alone won’t cut it’ – Asiedu Nketia says competence comes first in NDC appointments https://www.adomonline.com/loyalty-alone-wont-cut-it-asiedu-nketia-says-competence-comes-first-in-ndc-appointments/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 08:04:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548427 Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has made it clear that competence—not blind loyalty—will be the key criterion for appointments under an NDC administration.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he said the party is committed to protecting government business from being undermined by incompetence disguised as loyalty.

“Party loyalists should not necessarily be incompetent,” he emphasised.
“We have loyal, competent people. So if you prove to be incompetent, another loyalist who is competent can replace you.”

His comments come amid growing concerns about the performance expectations being set for newly confirmed Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), many of whom are long-time party activists.

President Mahama, in earlier meetings with these officials, signalled a clear shift: MMDCEs would now be judged based on measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and could face dismissal or reprimand if they fail to deliver.

The President also issued a deadline for asset declaration, indicating a tightening of accountability standards.

When host Evans Mensah asked whether this tough, performance-driven approach—commonly seen in the private sector—was compatible with political appointments, often viewed as rewards for loyalty, Asiedu Nketia was unequivocal.

“That’s why I told you that in determining the criteria for selection, loyalty comes in,” he explained, “but competence ranks higher than loyalty.”

He added that the party is not lacking in qualified individuals.
“We have more people than positions available. For each position, we have about 20 to 30 people who are qualified. So if some are competent and still loyal, you don’t leave them and go settle on somebody incompetent but loyal.”

Asiedu Nketia insisted that this approach is not only understood within the party but widely accepted.
“They understand and have accepted this,” he said, referring to party members and appointees. “We cannot allow government business to suffer because of party loyalty.”

The entire EC leadership must go; they are not fit for purpose – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/the-entire-ec-leadership-must-go-they-are-not-fit-for-purpose-asiedu-nketia/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 07:59:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548423 Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has launched a scathing attack on the Electoral Commission (EC), declaring its entire leadership unfit for purpose and calling for their removal.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, the NDC Chairman did not mince words.

“There has to be a change,” he insisted. “The three top leadership must all go. They have managed the commission so badly.”

Mr Asiedu Nketia said the Electoral Co

The NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says the Electoral Commission has failed in its core duty of managing credible elections.

He pointed to what he described as a worrying pattern of electoral mismanagement under the current leadership.

“You cannot still be having an election that ends in a stalemate. There is no anticipation of any stalemate in our laws unless people don’t want to do their work well,” he said.

“It’s a clear case of negligence or inability to perform its functions.”

Referencing the unresolved parliamentary election in Ablekuma North, Mr. Asiedu Nketia said the situation was just the latest in a series of failures by the Jean Mensa-led Commission.

“Six months after the election, and we still don’t have an elected MP. That must tell you something is wrong,” he stated.

The NDC Chairman argued that the problem is not isolated.

He recalled the disenfranchisement of the SALL constituency during the 2020 general elections and claimed that the EC has not conducted a single satisfactory election since taking office.

“This Commission, as presently constituted, took over the reins of the Electoral Commission, and they have never conducted a satisfactory election.

“First, it was SALL. A whole constituency went unrepresented for four years. Now, it’s Ablekuma North. And the Ayawaso West by-election? Everything has been messed up,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia stressed the need for the country to “reset” the EC and restore it as a credible institution.

“Resetting the EC means bringing it back to an institution that is fit for purpose,” he explained. “The way it exists now, it is not fit for purpose.”

He warned that keeping the current leadership undermines Ghana’s democratic credibility.

“If in any serious country we want to maintain this type of Electoral Commission, then I don’t know what the country is about,” he said.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is facing an uphill battle in the party’s 2028 presidential race, according to the latest Global InfoAnalytics poll.

The survey shows Asiedu Nketia has garnered just 10% of voter support, placing him outside the top three contenders for the NDC flagbearership.

Leading the race is the current Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, with 26% of voter preference.

She is closely followed by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, with 19%, and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ato Forson, who ranks third with 12%.

Asiedu Nketia shares fourth place with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, both polling at 10%.

Other notable figures in the race include Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who both secured 6% of voter support.

The results highlight that while Asiedu Nketia remains an influential figure within the NDC, he faces significant competition from more prominent candidates in the race for the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 general election.

Court slaps Asiedu Nketia with GH₵3k cost in defamation suit https://www.adomonline.com/court-slaps-asiedu-nketia-with-gh%e2%82%b53k-cost-in-defamation-suit/ Thu, 20 Feb 2025 09:33:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2506641

The High Court in Accra has imposed a GH₵3,000 cost on Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), for omitting a crucial witness in a defamation case.

Former Auditor-General Prof. Edward Dua Agyeman sued General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, for defamation in 2018, seeking GH₵20 million in damages.

The court, presided over by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, had granted General Mosquito’s request to amend his pre-trial checklist to include the omitted “necessary witness.” However, the court imposed the GH₵3,000 cost due to the oversight.

On February 19, 2025, Tonny Nyarko, counsel for General Mosquito, moved a motion to amend their earlier processes.

“My Lady, we have an application for leave to amend the pre-trial checklist, which was filed on the 13th of February 2025 and is fixed for hearing today (February 19, 2025),” he said.

“We move in terms of the motion paper and the supporting affidavit together with the attached exhibits,” Counsel submitted.

While relying on all depositions contained in their affidavit in support, he stated that on October 29, last year, “we filed a notice of subpoena in respect of Brian Anku Sapati.”

“At the last Court sitting, our attention was drawn to the fact that we inadvertently excluded Brian Anku Sapati from our pre-trial checklist even though he is a necessary witness in this matter,” Counsel submitted.

In light of that, he said, “we filed the present application for leave to amend the pre-trial checklist pursuant to Order 16 Rule 7 of C.I. 47, which is in respect of the amendment of other documents as the present one.”

“We submit that the amendment is done in good faith and is necessary to enable the Applicant (Asiedu Nketia) to put the entirety of his case before this Court and bring the same in line with the requirements of the rule of Court in respect of the Case Management Conference,” Mr. Tonny Nyarko stated.

In his view, the “application will not cause any surprise to the Plaintiff/Respondent (Prof. Dua Agyeman) since there is a notice of the subpoena already on record.”

“In the circumstances, we pray this Court to grant us leave to amend the pre-trial checklist in terms of Exhibit ‘J1,’” Counsel for the NDC Chairman prayed.

Nana Bayin Ackon, counsel who was holding brief for Gary Nimako Marfo, said, “we have nothing to say,” adding, “We leave it with the determination of the Court.”

By Court

Her Ladyship Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, the presiding judge, after listening to the parties, granted the request for leave and awarded a cost of GH₵3,000 against Mr. Asiedu Nketia.

“Application is granted as prayed,” the Court said.

“Applicant is given seven (7) days to file,” the Court said, adding that “Costs of GH₵3,000 is awarded against the Defendant/Applicant (Asiedu Nketia) in favor of the Plaintiff/Respondent (Prof. Edward Dua Agyeman),” the Court ordered.

The case has been adjourned to April 3, 2025, for continuation.

Both Prof. Edward Dua Agyeman (Plaintiff) and Johnson Asiedu Nketia were absent in Court.

Reliefs Sought

Prof. Dua Agyeman is praying the court to declare that the defendant’s publication on Neat FM, claiming he was banned by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Ghana) for producing fake audited accounts for a non-existent company, is slanderous and defamatory and was made without any reasonable, just, or probable cause.

“A declaration that the Defendant’s publication on Neat FM that ‘Dua Agyeman concocted fake audit reports concerning some senior officers which led to their dismissal from public service’ is slanderous and defamatory of the Plaintiff and same was made without any reasonable, just or probable cause,” the Plaintiff stated.

Prof. Dua Agyeman is seeking a further declaration that the defendant’s publication on Neat FM that he was sacked from the Audit Service due to dishonesty was slanderous and defamatory and was made without any reasonable, just, or probable cause.

He wants the court to grant an order of injunction directed at the defendant, his agents, assigns, and privies from making any further defamatory publications about him.

An order directing the defendant to retract the defamatory publication and render an unqualified apology in the same prominence on Neat FM and in four publications in the Daily Graphic is also being sought.

Additionally, the plaintiff is seeking general and compensatory damages of GH₵20 million for loss of reputation against the defendant.

We’ll find Ofori-Atta wherever he is; nobody will get away with corruption – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/well-find-ofori-atta-wherever-he-is-nobody-will-get-away-with-corruption-asiedu-nketia/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 07:44:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505175 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to dealing decisively with former appointees implicated in corruption.

According to him, former officials of the Akufo-Addo administration, including former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, will not escape investigations.

The comment from General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, came in response to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) declaration that Mr. Ofori-Atta is wanted and a fugitive.

In a video circulating on social media, Mr. Nketiah vowed that the NDC government will go to any length to bring former President Akufo-Addo’s cousin to face the law.

“Wherever Ken Ofori-Atta is hiding, we will find him by all means. He must avail himself for questioning on multiple cases. All former officials implicated in corruption will be compelled to face the law,” he asserted.

He emphasized that the government will enforce strict accountability measures, even within its own ranks, to ensure nobody escapes justice if found guilty of corruption.

“We will tighten the noose on accountability, and even elements within this government who engage in corrupt activities will not go scot-free,” he added.

Meanwhile, as a starting point for the Mahama-led administration, the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee has compiled complaints of 2,417 suspected corruption cases, which are currently being scrutinised by the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for investigation and possible prosecution.

Bishop Sam Owusu’s prophecy about Asiedu Nketia as future President [Watch] https://www.adomonline.com/bishop-sam-owusus-prophecy-about-asiedu-nketia-as-future-president-watch/ Sat, 01 Feb 2025 20:37:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2499675 Founder and leader of Pottersville Church International, Ambassador Bishop Sam Owusu, has made a bold prophecy, claiming that Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is spiritually destined to become Ghana’s president in the future.

In a Facebook video that has gone viral, the renowned preacher stated that God had shown him the numerous battles Asiedu Nketia had fought for the NDC, which, according to him, makes him the next presidential candidate spiritually.

“The sitting president should be careful and not live the life the other people lived. He should never forget those who stood for him, including leaders.

“When you look at the current government right now and look into the spiritual account, there is one who made Mahama become a flagbearer. It is one man who made sure power would be given to him. He decided to make him lead, and that is the Chairman of their party,” he stated.

Bishop Owusu further revealed that he had already foreseen this in a prophecy he made months ago.

“In November or October, I prophesied. I saw that when Mahama leaves, I saw in the realms that he will be the next flagbearer of their party. I saw the mantle with him. If John Dramani Mahama understands gratitude, honour, and loyalty, he must make sure the chairman, who has used all his life to sacrifice for the party, is given the mantle decided in heaven,” he stated.

He continued, “I prophesied. Last year, I saw that Asiedu Nketia will one day become president. The Lord told me to look at his hands and the battles he has fought. I said, wow! The video is there. If we are not careful, they will sabotage and forget him, and it might affect the party. The NDC party will start breaking just like the NPP.”

Nonetheless, Bishop Owusu’s prophecy has since generated widespread debate and Asiedu Nketia, a veteran politician and former General Secretary of the NDC, is yet to respond to the prophecy.

Leadership must ensure equity for all citizens, regardless of faith – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/leadership-must-ensure-equity-for-all-citizens-regardless-of-faith-asiedu-nketia/ Fri, 10 Jan 2025 18:25:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491741 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed profound gratitude to Ghana’s Muslim community and the Chief Imam for their significant role in upholding the nation’s secular character during the recent elections.

Speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving (Muslim Prayers) on Friday, January 10, Mr Nketia acknowledged the community’s commitment to ensuring that the December 7, 2024, general elections were centered on integrity, honesty, and competence rather than religious affiliations.

He emphasised the importance of maintaining Ghana’s secular state, as enshrined in the Constitution, where all citizens are treated equally, regardless of religion, language, or cultural background.

“There were attempts in the early part of the campaigning to make the election look like we were going to vote for people who are aligned with our religion. I think at some rallies I did indicate that that will be a very dangerous precedent for the country.

“The Constitution has established the state of Ghana to be a secular state, and so the responsibility of the leadership of the country is to create conditions where each and every citizen will be able to practice their faith, will be given equal treatment, will be given the opportunity to take advantage of anything that the state of Ghana can offer without looking at their religion, their language, or the dressing they put on,” he said.

Mr Nketia praised the Muslim community for embracing the message of unity and equality, highlighting how their support contributed to the election of a leader, President John Dramani Mahama, who is committed to fostering equity and fairness for all citizens.

“We are here today because we have elected a president whom we trust to create conditions of equity and fairness for every citizen to practice their religion, to create conditions of equity so that every citizen of this country can take advantage of all opportunities that the country can offer,” Mr Nketia said.

The NDC Chairman also acknowledged the prayers and support received from the Zongo communities during the campaign period, attributing the peaceful nature of the elections and the party’s success to divine intervention.

“We thank you for the prayers that were offered to us in all the Zongo communities we visited. We know that Allah heard your prayers and chose President John Dramani Mahama for us, and that is why we have come here to thank you,” he said.

Mr Nketia reiterated the importance of Ghana’s democracy and its ability to endure challenges, affirming that the nation is on a path toward greater unity and inclusivity.

Legally-backed committee needed to determine who deserves state awards – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/legally-backed-committee-needed-to-determine-who-deserves-state-awards-asiedu-nketia/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 18:36:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489205 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has proposed the establishment of a committee to oversee the issuing of state awards.

According to him, such a committee should be established in the future and should be backed by law, with the mandate to carefully identify and honour deserving citizens who have made significant contributions to the country’s development.

He said, “I want to suggest to the people of Ghana that it is high time we establish a proper committee, backed by law, that will determine who should receive a national award.”

Mr Nketia made these comments following the state awards ceremony held yesterday in Accra, under the auspices of the outgoing President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He argued that many of the individuals honoured by the President did not deserve the recognition. He criticised Nana Akufo-Addo for awarding his cronies without considering their contributions to the nation’s development.

For him, one of the awardees, the outgoing Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, was undeserving of the honour.

He questioned, “Why would anyone with a properly functioning mind award someone like Hawa Koomson, who was involved in shooting and killing Ghanaians during the election?”

He also expressed dissatisfaction over the individuals honoured by the president, stating, “We have begun conferring state honours on looters and murderers. What are we doing? We are teaching the youth that, after all, there is nothing wrong with looting state coffers, that there is nothing wrong with shooting and killing your fellow Ghanaians,” he claimed.

Mr Nketia believes that with the establishment of a committee to oversee the awards, those who truly deserve recognition would be honoured, rather than following the current approach of the president.

He was speaking at this year’s 31st revolution anniversary of the NDC, held in Accra on Tuesday, December 31.

Akufo-Addo endorsed all the wrongs by his appointees – Asiedu Nketia claims https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-endorsed-all-the-wrongs-by-his-appointees-asiedu-nketia-claims/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 18:27:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489199 Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has strongly criticized the outgoing President, Nana Akufo-Addo, accusing him of being the mastermind behind what he described as the wrongdoings in the system since 2017.

The Chairman claimed that several of the nation’s troubles in recent years, including the post-election violence in 2020, which resulted in the loss of lives, corrupt practices by some government officials, and other misdeeds, were orchestrated by the outgoing president.

He argued that, the state honours awarded to many top officials in the president’s government demonstrated that the president supports the numerous wrongs that have occurred in the country.

“We have begun conferring state honours on looters and murderers. What are we doing? We are teaching the youth that, after all, there is nothing wrong with looting state coffers, that after all, there is nothing wrong with shooting and killing your fellow Ghanaians. If anyone had any doubt about the mastermind behind all the killings and looting over the past eight years, I believe the award ceremony that took place yesterday has cleared all doubts. All the wrongdoings committed by Nana Akufo-Addo’s appointees were actually endorsed by the big man himself,” he alleged.

Mr Nketia made these remarks at the NDC’s 43rd anniversary of the 31st December Revolution in Accra on Tuesday, December 31.

According to him, state awards should be given to individuals who have played significant roles in a nation’s building and development, not to individuals of questionable character such as the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and outgoing Fisheries Minister, Hawa Koomson.

The outgoing MP, Hawa Koomson, was allegedly involved in the shooting and killing of constituents in Kasoa during the 2020 general election. She has since faced public criticism for her actions throughout her political career. She was also accused of carrying out similar violent acts in the just-ended 2024 election.

“Why would anyone with a properly functioning mind award someone like Hawa Koomson, who was involved in shooting and killing Ghanaians during the elections?” Asiedu Nketia said.

He emphasized, “State awards are serious matters and should be reserved for people of distinction – people who have fought for a good cause. If we are awarding state honours to vigilante groups, then that is the message we are sending to the youth: that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and shoot at people, that it is acceptable to loot state coffers when given the opportunity to serve as a minister.”

State awards not meant for ‘vigilante boys and girls’ – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/state-awards-not-meant-for-vigilante-boys-and-girls-asiedu-nketia/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 15:00:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489077 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has voiced strong criticism against President Nana Akufo-Addo regarding the selection process for recipients of the recent National State Awards.

Speaking during the 43rd-anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution, Asiedu Nketiah raised concerns about the credibility of the awards, claiming that some individuals did not merit the honors they received.

He also questioned the transparency of the selection criteria, arguing that it undermines the prestige and significance of the awards.

The NDC Chairman called for the introduction of legislation to regulate the organization and conferral of National and State Awards.

He emphasized the need for a transparent, fair, and merit-based system to uphold the integrity of such recognitions.

“State awards are serious matters. They must be reserved for individuals of distinction—people who have fought for a good cause. If we confer state honors on vigilante boys and girls, then we are teaching the youth that it is acceptable to pick up weapons and harm others. That it is acceptable to loot state coffers as a minister,” he stated.

Mr. Nketia proposed the establishment of a legally-backed committee to oversee the selection process for national awards.

“It is time we set up a proper committee, supported by law, to determine who truly deserves a national award,” he concluded.

At a press conference today, Friday, December 13, the outgoing Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, called on the NDC leadership to immediately rein in their supporters suspected of causing chaos at collation centres, stating that their actions were detrimental to democracy.

Addressing the media, Mr. Asiedu Nketia criticized the Member of Parliament following reports of the invasion of state institutions and, in some instances, the looting of state assets allegedly carried out by young supporters of the incoming NDC administration.

“I heard my junior brother Afenyo-Markin, who, having rejected the position of Minority Leader, is now on his way to becoming a micro Minority Leader. He is bragging that he belongs to a party of the rule of law and all that,” he said.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia went on to say, “We in the National Democratic Congress don’t need lectures from Afenyo-Markin about democracy at all. Indeed, if there were any lectures on impunity, we would invite him as our lecturer.”

He added that, the Member of Parliament should focus on addressing the challenges within his party.

Additionally, Mr. Asiedu Nketia warned that all acts of violence would be thoroughly investigated and pledged to ensure that the electoral system is sanitized once the NDC takes office.

“And so, anybody who is thinking about abusing these three weeks, abusing power during these three weeks to create any problems, must know that there will be consequences for them after the takeover,” he cautioned.

We cannot afford to disappoint Ghanaians — Asiedu Nketia on NDC’s post-victory mission https://www.adomonline.com/we-cannot-afford-to-disappoint-ghanaians-asiedu-nketia-on-ndcs-post-victory-mission/ Mon, 09 Dec 2024 20:39:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2481745 The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has stressed the significant responsibility placed on the party after its resounding victory in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking after John Dramani Mahama was officially declared President-elect, Asiedu Nketia stressed the need for focused planning and dedication to addressing Ghana’s challenges.

“Let me advise that we should be modest in our celebrations,” he said. “I can almost feel the weight of responsibility on our shoulders. Ghanaians have given us this mandate to accomplish the task of national reconciliation. Nobody should have to remind us of the enormity of this responsibility. We cannot afford to disappoint them.”

He emphasized that the NDC’s victory was not solely for the party but for the millions of Ghanaians who had placed their trust in its ability to steer the nation toward recovery and prosperity.

“This is a pivotal moment for our nation. The people have entrusted us with their hopes and aspirations, and it is our duty to honor that trust by working diligently to rescue Ghana,” Asiedu Nketia said.

He called on the NDC’s leadership and supporters to move from celebration to preparation for governance. “In the coming weeks, let us curtail our celebrations and begin planning seriously how to rescue our dear country. This is not a moment for complacency but for action,” he stressed.

The Chairman urged the party to unite around its shared mission of rebuilding the nation, emphasizing the importance of humility, diligence, and accountability in governance.

“The task ahead requires us to be focused and resolute. Ghanaians have suffered enough, and we owe it to them to restore their faith in leadership. We have a lot to do, but together, we can make Ghana great and strong,” he concluded.

Asiedu Nketia’s remarks come at a time of heightened expectations for the incoming NDC government to deliver on its promises and lead the country toward economic recovery and national reconciliation.

Asiedu Nketia accused of involvement in parliamentary impasse https://www.adomonline.com/asiedu-nketia-accused-of-involvement-in-parliamentary-impasse/ Tue, 19 Nov 2024 08:00:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2473171 The Majority in Parliament has accused the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, of orchestrating the recent impasse that disrupted parliamentary proceedings.

The Second Deputy Majority Whip, Alex Tetteh Djornobuah, made the claim, asserting that the NDC leadership has repeatedly interfered in parliamentary business.

“I disagree with the National Chairman of the NDC. If you recall, about two or three weeks ago, what happened in Parliament was not the fault of the Members of Parliament.

“It was due to the control of the [NDC] National Chairman because we have witnessed this on several occasions when we are trying to conduct business in Parliament,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.

The Sefwi Akontombra MP made these comments in response to a directive from Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito, instructing NDC MPs not to return to Parliament if a recall is issued.

Asiedu Nketia had alleged that such sessions would only serve corrupt interests, casting doubt on the motives behind the recall of Parliament.

In reaction, Mr. Djornobuah described the NDC Chairman’s statement as harmful to the legislative process and urged that it should not be tolerated.

“If the NDC National Chairman, who claims they are the next alternative to govern the country, is putting out such statements, I don’t think Ghanaians should accept this.

“We have a responsibility to work for Ghanaians, and if the Speaker, in his wisdom, recalls Members of Parliament to transact business for the nation, we on the Majority side will show up,” he affirmed.

“Let no NDC MP step foot in Parliament. If they like, they can go and burn the sea. There’s no work in Parliament that can be described as an emergency. This is just an avenue for them to continue the rampant corruption they’ve engaged in for the past eight years,” he said.

In response to this, Mr Awuku, who is also the Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem described the comment as very worrying coming from a party chairman.

“How did we get here? If God forbid, the NDC wins power and the NPP has the majority of MPs in Parliament, what will his reaction be?” If your party wins power and the NPP is in the majority, how do you expect them to treat you?” he asked.

In his view, such remarks could hinder the working relationship between parties.

He added that while they may disagree with the decision of the court, it’s important to respect and accept it.

Mr Awuku stressed that disrupting the business of Parliament could have long-term negative consequences for the country and the political environment.

NPP doctored my campaign message – Asiedu Nketia on video of free SHS cancellation https://www.adomonline.com/npp-doctored-my-campaign-message-asiedu-nketia-on-video-of-free-shs-cancellation/ Mon, 11 Nov 2024 11:12:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2470541 Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of damaging his campaign with a doctored video.

In a widely circulated video clip, the NDC Chairman is allegedly heard saying that, if the party returns to power, they would cancel the Free SHS policy.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia, however, claims that the video has been altered to distort the party’s message.

The statement is said to have been made at the Ahafo Ano North Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

The original video, captured by media touring with the NDC, reportedly shows the Chairman actually praising the policy.

However, Mr. Asiedu Nketia clarified that the next NDC government would abolish the double-track system and improve the feeding program for beneficiaries.

In response to the doctored video at a rally in Agogo, the NDC Chairman alleged that the NPP is attempting to tarnish his campaign in the Ashanti Region.

The NDC Chairman insists that the party’s campaign team remains unshaken by these tactics from their opponents.

He asserts that the NDC’s prospects in the region continue to grow.

2024 polls: Asiedu Nketia urges Ghanaians to vote for change https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-asiedu-nketia-urges-ghanaians-to-vote-for-change/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 09:18:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2468960 National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has called on Ghanaians to participate fully in the upcoming elections.

He dismissed the idea of abstaining from the elections due to unfulfilled promises, particularly by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Addressing residents of Akwasease in the Ahafo Ano North Constituency, Ashanti Region, on Tuesday, November 5, Asiedu Nketia underscored that refraining from voting weakens democracy and reduces opportunities for real change.

He urged the community to stay optimistic and highlighted the importance of holding leaders accountable through active engagement in the December elections.

“I’m baffled when I hear people say they won’t vote because a government failed to fulfill its promises. While it’s true some promises weren’t met, that shouldn’t deter you from voting.

“If you want accountability, abstaining isn’t the solution. Leaders know they hold power because of your votes, and they recognize you can withdraw that support. Choosing not to vote only strengthens their position.

“Now is the time to come together as one people and vote them out. Their governance has been poor,” he said.

‘I was born into NPP’ doesn’t bring development – Asiedu Nketia to A/R electorate https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-born-into-npp-doesnt-bring-development-asiedu-nketia-to-a-r-electorate/ Tue, 05 Nov 2024 17:32:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2468817 Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia believes the level of development in the region under the NPP is not commensurate with the massive support and loyalty they have shown the party over the years.

“Those of you who keep saying you were born into the NPP so you cannot vote against them must have a re-think because the party has proven over the years that they don’t value your loyalty,” Mr. Nketia said at Afrancho near Akomadan in the Offinso North District.

The National Chairman who was addressing the people of Afrancho as part of his three-day retail campaign in the region, said the essence of elections was to vote for parties to bring development to citizens.

“It is time to depart from voting for a tradition that has left you impoverished and your communities underdeveloped in the last eight years when you have a choice that is people-centered and development-oriented in the NDC,” he noted.

He said it defied logic to see most development projects in communities in the Ashanti Region executed by the NDC, yet the people still kept faith with the NPP.

“Since they know you will remain loyal to them even if they don’t develop your communities, they will continue to take you for granted,” the NDC National Chairman maintained.

Unlike the NDC which is known for even distribution of national resources irrespective of which region votes for them, the NPP believes the Ashanti Region is secured no matter how poor they perform, he told the gathering.

He urged the people to demand projects that would impact the lives of the entire population and resist the money-sharing strategy that they always adopt to woo voters during elections.

“Those monies they share during the election are just a fraction of what they have squandered at the expense of developing your communities,” Mr. Nketia alleged.

According to him, despite the NDC playing second fiddle to the NPP in the region, they could boast of monumental projects transforming lives across the region, stressing that voters in Ashanti had a perfect chance to restore the party responsible for those projects in December.

He said the region must vote out the NPP for the party to take them seriously after years of neglect and abuse of their loyalty to the party.

The first day of Mr. Nketia’s campaign tour took him to eight communities in four constituencies, including Offinso North, Offinso South, Afigya Kwabre North and Afigya Kwabre South.

We’ll arrest, prosecute Wulochamey’s killers – Asiedu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/well-arrest-prosecute-wulochameys-killers-asiedu-nketia/ Mon, 21 Oct 2024 14:23:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2462550 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has said the next NDC government will investigate, arrest and prosecute persons, who stabbed a 28-year-old teacher trainee graduate, Silas Wulochamey to death at Banda Kabrono in the Bono Region, during the 2020 voter registration exercise.

“Any person involved in the killing of Wulochamey will not walk freely under the NDC administration unless he flees from the country. We will investigate, arrest and make sure the person is prosecuted for his soul to rest well,” he said.

Mr Nketiah was speaking at mini rallies at Banda Boase and Bui in the Banda Constituency in the Bono Region, as part of his seven-day campaign tour of the region.

“Wulochamey cannot die just like a dog. We will bring the perpetrator to book,” he said.

Recall

Wulochamey met his untimely death after he was allegedly stabbed by some people believed to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Banda Kabrono in the Bono Region.

The unfortunate incident happened on Monday, July 13, 2020, when Wulochamey was returning from a visit to his pastor at Wenchi Methodist.

At Kabrono, near Banda Ahenkro, his killers stopped the vehicle he was travelling with other passengers, forced him down and stabbed him.

He died while on admission at Wenchi Methodist hospital.

During the 2020 voter registration exercise, violence erupted in the Banda District, particularly at Kabrono, Banda Ahenkroh, Bongase, Surogbo and Nyire because the NPP and NDC accused each other of wrongdoing.

It was in the violence that led to his tragic death.

Innocent, shock

Mr Nketia said there was a clear indication that the deceased was innocent about the violence that occurred in the area.

He expressed shock that after four years of the incident, the police had not made any arrest in connection with the incident.

Mr Nketia said Wulochamey’s death was among several incidents that occurred during the 2020 general election that NDC refused to sign the peace pact ahead of the 2024 elections.

He said the party would not commit to any peace engagement unless the government arrested and prosecuted the perpetrators.

Mr Nketia appealed to the chiefs and people of the area to vote for the NDC to look for the killers.

However, he suspended the tour on Sunday to attend an emergency meeting conveyed by the party to discuss issues on the Supreme Court ruling that halted the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s declaration of the seats of four Members of Parliament (MP) vacant.

The campaign tour will resume upon the conclusion of the meeting, focusing on NDC’s key manifesto promises and local concerns.

Asiedu Nketia’s campaign tour kicked off in Dormaa West and Dormaa Central, where he visited chiefs and residents in hard-to-reach areas.

This grassroots approach allows the NDC to understand the unique challenges faced by each community, ensuring targeted solutions when they come into power.

Asiedu Nketia emphasised the importance of connecting with voters directly, saying, they need to go deep down into the communities to know the people’s actual challenges.

He said this strategy demonstrates NDC’s commitment to community-centric governance, he said the campaign tour is crucial for NDC’s bid to win the December polls.

Some of the six communities visited in the two constituencies Dormaa West and Dormaa Central include Krakrom, Kojokumikrom, Kojomokrom, Kakrakrom, Atesikrom, Nsesreso, and Asunsu number one.

He attributed the nation’s current challenges to government mismanagement of the economy.

He urged the people to vote for NDC to tackle pressing issues like cocoa pricing and bad roads that hinder market access.

He called on supporters and members of the party, and the electorate to come out in their numbers on December 7, and vote for the NDC to win the elections overwhelmingly.

Mr Nketia said every single vote is valuable for the NDC in securing victory in the Presidential and Parliamentary elections, and asked the party to remain vigilant at the polling stations too.

The NDC National Chairman made the call when he addressed separate political rallies at Kwadwomokrom, Kojokumikrom and Krakrom in the Dormaa West constituency, as part of his campaign tour to the Bono Region.

Describing the economic hardship in the country now as unbearable, Mr Nketia advised the electorate “to make their voices heard through the power of the ballot box”.

The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Dormaa West Constituency and the NDC’s Parliamentary Candidate, Vincent Oppong Asamoah, said the NDC governments always prioritised the development of rural communities.

He said Dormaa West was among the districts in the country that benefited much from NDC administrations and called on the electorate to vote for the party when they go to polls.

On his part, the Abakomahene (sub-chief) of Kojokumikrom, Nana Kwadwo Yeboah, said the NDC had been at the forefront of the development of the area.

He expressed hope that the party would regain political power to facilitate the progressive development of the area.

NPP plotting to capture Parliament – Asiedu Nketia alleges https://www.adomonline.com/npp-plotting-to-capture-parliament-asiedu-nketia-alleges/ Thu, 10 Oct 2024 17:51:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2459181 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is plotting to capture the next Parliament.

He alleged that, the governing party is sponsoring independent candidates to achieve this feat to make governance difficult for John Mahama should he win the election.

He said this while addressing a rally at Sovie in the Kpando Constituency of the Volta Region.

Mr Nketia advised the electorates not to condone the plot of any parliamentary candidate who would want to ride on the name of John Mahama to achieve their political goals by preaching ‘skirt and blouse’ voting.

“NPP is financing those who are doing that, they want to create a lame duck Presidency for President John Dramani Mahama, so that when he becomes President [again], and parliament is captured by another party, then he cannot work”, he stressed.

Mr Nketia entreated the electorates to request parliamentary candidates who are advocating for ‘skirt and blouse’ voting to fully commit to the NDC before they would listen and assimilate their messages.

“Tell those who are using President Mahama’s name and NDC’s name that if they want people to vote for President Mahama, we have enough T-shirts available, they should come and pick some and wear them for their house to house before they campaign for President Mahama.

“You cannot be in an elephant T-shirt and then claim that you are campaigning for Mahama. Mahama does not like elephants”, Mr Nketia clarified.

He explained that, the NDC would not work with parliamentarians who do not belong to the umbrella fraternity when it wins power.

Mr Nketia on the second day of his campaign tour of the Volta region visited the Afadzato South, Kpando, North, and South Dayi districts.

The Volta Regional NDC Chairman, Mawutor Agbavitor implored the electorates to vote for John Mahama to end the suffering of Ghanaians.

He said the implementation of Free Primary Health Care and 24-hour economy policies among others are engineered to make life easier for the citizenry.

“I remember my mother used her textiles as collateral to secure a loan to finance my education. John Mahama says that won’t happen under his administration. So, he aims to provide funding to secure admission for every qualified tertiary student. In the second year, you will be given loans to continue and complete your tertiary education. After completion, you will work under the 24-hour economy to pay back the loan”, he stressed.

The Kpando Constituency NDC Parliamentary candidate, Sebastian Deh called for unity towards securing victory in the upcoming general elections.

NDC’s demo is to prevent war – Aseidu Nketia https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-demo-is-to-prevent-war-aseidu-nketia/ Tue, 17 Sep 2024 14:13:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2450013 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia says that the party’s demonstration against the Electoral Commission, is aimed at preventing war.

According to him, efforts must be made to combat elements that could escalate into war.

Addressing protestors in Accra at the party’s “Enough is Enough” demonstrations at the Electoral Commission, Mr Aseidu Nketia argued that inaction could lead to a worsening situation, and urged all Ghanaians to take a stand to prevent it.

The protests, held on September 17, 2024, involved thousands of NDC members and supporters across all 16 regions of Ghana.

Their main demand is for the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct a forensic audit of the voters register ahead of the 2024 elections, which the EC has rejected as unnecessary.

Many others have called the protests as premature because the EC is engaged in cleaning the register after the mandatory public exhibition.

Mr Aseidu Nketia however, warned that if their demands are not met, more protests will follow, targeting district and constituency offices of the EC.

“Today is just the beginning. If you think that after the demonstration, everybody will go to sleep, you are joking,” he added.

He also criticised those who claim to support peace but ignore perceived wrongdoing, stating that such actions contribute to the brewing of conflict.

In a video that has surfaced on social media, Mr Asiedu Nketiah is seen addressing a crowd at an NDC event in the Central Region, where he criticised the locals for not translating their support into votes for the party.

Mr Asiedu Nketia pointed out that, despite the NDC frequently selecting its flagbearer or running mate from the Central Region, the region has not delivered strong electoral support to the party.

He underscored that the people of the Central Region hold a special place in the NDC, yet their voting patterns have not consistently reflected this affiliation.

He reminded the audience that the NDC has always included candidates from the Central Region on its presidential tickets, highlighting the party’s commitment to representing and valuing the region.

“In our first election, we chose someone (K.N. Arkaah) from the Central Region as our running mate. In our second election, we selected Prof. Mills as our running mate, and in our third election, Prof. Mills became our flagbearer. In our fourth and fifth elections, Prof. Mills was our flagbearer. He won and became President.”

“When he died, John Mahama took over and selected someone (P.K. Amissah-Arthur) from the Central Region to be Vice President. After Amissah-Arthur, today, we have Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang from the Central Region as our running mate and soon-to-be Vice President,” said the former Deputy Minister for Agriculture during the Rawlings regime.”

“So, you have a lot of valuable assets, but you are discarding them. Why are you throwing out your intestines and replacing them with rubbish? There are regions in Ghana where the flagbearer of a party comes from, and ever since, the people of those regions have consistently voted for that party. But you, the people of the Central Region, who helped form the NDC, in all eight elections held in this Fourth Republic, there has not been one in which a person from the Central Region wasn’t a flagbearer or running mate. Yet, during elections, you vote against the NDC. Think about this carefully. If you don’t make it to Heaven, don’t blame Jesus.”

Galamsey crackdown is a farce – Asiedu Nketia claims real culprits are untouched [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-crackdown-is-a-farce-asiedu-nketia-claims-real-culprits-are-untouched-audio/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 13:10:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2448538 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has made a startling revelation about the ongoing galamsey crisis.

He claimed that, the real culprits behind illegal mining activities are being protected while only the laborers are being arrested.

“Those they arrest are not the real galamseyers. The leaders or ministers who hold concessions are not being arrested, and that is a disservice to the laborers” he said in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Friday.

He accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of failing Ghanaians on galamsey.

“The NPP government has failed Ghanaians on galamsey as they are all part of it. Their record is not good.”

In his view, the problem should not be confused with legitimate mining, which, if done responsibly, can benefit citizens sustainably.

“Natural resources are meant to support citizens responsibly and sustainably. Even South Africa started mining years ago but has not had any problems because they are using legitimate means to mine” he said.

He the NDC chairman therefore slammed the government’s approach, arguing that banning mining entirely is not the solution.

“The government’s role in managing the system is poor. Banning it completely is not the way to go but ensuring that natural resources are exploited in a responsible manner” he said.

Mr. Nketia added that if the NDC comes to power, former President John Mahama has promised that no appointee will be given a license for galamsey, or else the fight will be in vain.

His comments follow a national security meeting aimed at assessing the impact of galamsey on river bodies and the environment. Organised Labour has warned the government of a nationwide strike by the end of September if decisive action is not taken.

Other groups, including religious leaders, have expressed similar concerns.

I’m shocked – Asiedu Nketia tells Henry Quartey over threatening video saga [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/im-shocked-asiedu-nketia-tells-henry-quartey-over-threatening-video-saga-audio/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 11:39:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2448528 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed shock and disappointment over the politicization of a recent crime by the Interior Ministry.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Nketia said such a comment should not come from a Minister.

“I am shocked that the Interior Ministry would politicize any crime. It should not come from the mouth of the Interior Minister. If the Interior Minister claims the suspect is NDC, why not focus on the crime instead of concentrating on party colors? he questioned.

Mr. Nketia’s comments come in response to Ibrahim Mohammed, who threatened to shoot and harm public officials in a viral video.

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah ,Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

The police launched a manhunt for Mohammed after the video, where he, identifying himself as “Commander Kanawu Revolution Leader,” threatened key figures, including the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), George Akuffo Dampare, and the Interior Minister, Henry Quartey. Mohammed accused the IGP and the Interior Minister of orchestrating false recruitment into the police force in the Ashanti Region to manipulate the upcoming elections.

But the NDC National Chairman said his party does not have any association with the individual nor does it know anyone like that in the party.

“I don’t know anyone like that in the party. We don’t have any association like that in the party. The fact that someone is NDC doesn’t give them the right to misbehave or to neglect proper conduct. I am so embarrassed that the Interior Minister would say that the person is an NDC member and is disgracing the NDC. Is that the work you are called to do?” he said.

Do you think Mahama washes his face from down to up? – Asiedu Nketia quizzes EC [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/do-you-think-mahama-washes-his-face-from-down-to-up-asiedu-nketia-quizzes-ec-audio/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 11:34:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2448520 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has questioned the Electoral Commission’s (EC) appeal to former President John Mahama to bring his party to the discussion table to help address alleged discrepancies in the provisional voters register that the party claims to have identified.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, he questioned the EC’s credibility and their approach to resolving the issue.

“How can you expect Mahama to advise us on this matter when he is leading the demonstration? Do you think Mahama washes his face from down to up? Have you ever heard a thief admit to being a thief? Do you expect them to accept our plea unless external factors come in? he questioned.

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah ,Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

He accused the EC of failing to resolve the issue.

“Their actions simply mean they lack integrity. They are courting unnecessary mistrust from the public. There is no sitting down to resolve this issue; we only need an independent consultant” he noted.

Mr. Nketia’s reaction follows the EC’s reply to the NDC’s concerns about the credibility of the 2024 voters’ register.

The EC emphasized that, street demonstrations are not a solution and has repeatedly asked the NDC to provide data on the alleged discrepancies, which the party has yet to supply.

The Commission stressed that dialogue, rather than protests, is crucial for establishing a credible and robust voters’ register and has called on John Mahama to encourage his party to engage in discussions with the EC.

We need to address the leakage issue in the voter register – Asiedu Nketia [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/we-need-to-address-the-leakage-issue-in-the-voter-register-asiedu-nketia-listen/ Fri, 13 Sep 2024 11:28:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2448482 The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has raised concerns about the integrity of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) setup.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Friday, he slammed the involvement of individuals with past affiliations to the NPP in the EC.

“We only need a neutral person. Asare Bossman was NPP before he joined the Commission, and there are others too” he claimed.

Mr. Nketia expressed frustration over what he perceives as a lack of transparency adding that the issue is not just about the data but also about understanding how there leakages.

“If there is a leakage in a bottle and you haven’t asked a third person to check it, what happens? We all need to see for ourselves. We need a consultant to check the integrity of the register. The current consultants are all NPP people and, therefore, cannot operate EC machines effectively.

The NDC has also called for an independent audit of the voter register, citing alleged irregularities. However, the EC has rejected this demand.

But the former general scribe, expressed concern that the system might be compromised and stressed the need for clarity.

“The EC is ignoring the fact that the system is robust. What we are saying is based on the robustness of the system. It’s not about who conducts the investigation but understanding the source of the leakage.”

In response to ongoing issues, the NDC has announced a nationwide demonstration, dubbed the ‘mother of all demonstrations,’ scheduled for September 17, 2024.

This protest will span all 16 regional capitals across Ghana. Speaking after filing the nomination of the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, at the EC headquarters on September 9, 2024.

On the 17th of this month, the NDC will embark on a massive nationwide demonstration.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia remarked while addressing NDC supporters during a campaign tour with the parliamentary candidate, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor at the Kasoa market.

General Mosquito said that Parliament is for people who have the interests of their constituents at heart and can push for their wellbeing, not for people quick to fire gunshots.

According to him, this is the trait of Naa Koryoo and urged constituents to massively vote for her and NDC flagbearer John Mahama on December 7.

Mr Nketia vowed that, the NDC in this election is poised to snatch the seat from the NPP, encourage Naa Koryoo not to lose hope in the face of adversities.

Drawing inspiration from late South African President Nelson Mandela’s jail term, the NDC Chairman said just as he[Mandela] became great after his arrest, so will Naa Koryoo be.

“Mandela was imprisoned and his detractors thought that was his end but it made him better and stronger so is the story of Naa Koryoo.

“If Hawa Koomson need the blessing would be Naa Koryoo’s blessing, she wouldn’t have done that. For the person firing the shots, she will be sent for peacekeeping in Afghanistan but Naa Koryoo will go to parliament to serve the interest of Kasoa,” he said amidst loud cheers from the crowd.

Meanwhile, Naa Koryoo cautioned Ghanaians not to make a mistake and vote for NPP again as it will lead to the collapse of the economy.

NDC will no longer tolerate intimidation in Kyebi – Asiedu Nketia warns https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-will-no-longer-tolerate-intimidation-in-kyebi-asiedu-nketia-warns/ Tue, 03 Sep 2024 19:27:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2443595 The National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has issued a strong warning that the party will no longer tolerate any form of intimidation against its supporters in Kyebi in the Abuakwa South constituency.

Addressing voters in Akyem Adukrom in Abuakwa South on Monday, September 2, as part of his “retail campaign” tour of the Eastern Region, Asiedu Nketia highlighted the various forms of attacks and intimidation the NDC has endured during and after elections in the area in previous polls, describing these actions as undemocratic and contrary to the legacy of J.B. Danquah, a key figure in Ghana’s multi-party democracy.

He cited specific incidents, including the burning of the NDC constituency office in Kyebi in 1996 and the assault on party agents during elections.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia questioned the commitment to democratic principles in J.B. Danquah’s hometown, suggesting that the multi-party democracy Danquah championed is not being upheld.

He vowed that the NDC would no longer accept intimidation in the constituency and warned that the party would take all necessary measures to protect its interests.

The NDC Chairman also disputed the notion that Abuakwa South is a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), pointing out that both the NDC and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) have won the seat before.

Earlier, at Begoro Zongo in the Fanteakwa North constituency, Mr. Asiedu Nketia criticized the Ministry for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, along with the Zongo Development Fund, labeling them as deceptive initiatives aimed at misleading Zongo communities.
