Davis scored 22 points in 26 minutes before leaving the game with an eye injury in the third quarter as he tried to block a shot by the Raptors’ Jakob Poeltl.

The 31-year-old sustained a number of eye injuries last season, suffering a corneal abrasion in March against the Golden State Warriors before being hit again in the left eye in April against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

James added 19 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds for his second consecutive triple-double, with the 39-year-old becoming the oldest player in NBA history to achieve the feat. It was his third triple-double of the season and the 115th of his career.

The Raptors led 34-26 at the end of the first quarter and were 10 points ahead (48-38) in the second quarter before the Lakers hit back to cut the gap to 55-53 at the interval.

The visitors led 77-72 with three minutes and 59 seconds left in the third quarter before the Lakers went on a 16-5 run and from then on they controlled the game.

Elsewhere, Stephen Curry hit seven of his 13 three-point efforts, finishing with 36 points as the Golden State Warriors beat Oklahoma City 127-116.

But Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 43 points were in vain as the Milwaukee Bucks lost 113-107 to the Boston Celtics.

Jayson Tatum had 31 points and 12 rebounds for the reigning NBA champions, who have won nine of their opening 11 games but are still two games behind the unbeaten Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference.

Payton Pritchard scored 18 points off the bench for Boston with Derrick White and former Buck Jrue Holiday adding 15 points each and Jaylen Brown hitting 14.

Greek star Antetokounmpo also claimed 13 rebounds and elbowed Brown to the floor at one point, offering a hand to help him up only to pull it away when Brown reached for it.

“Giannis is a child,” said Brown. “I’m just focused on helping my team get a win.”

James and Davis help Lakers extend winning start https://www.adomonline.com/james-and-davis-help-lakers-extend-winning-start/ Sun, 27 Oct 2024 14:45:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2464953 LeBron James and Anthony Davis combined for 63 points – 30 of them in the fourth quarter – as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Sacramento Kings 131-127 to make it three wins from three this season.

The Lakers led by as many as 15 points on the way to a 64-60 half-time lead at the Crypto.com Arena in LA.

But the Kings fought back and were 94-87 in front heading into the final quarter before a 21-0 scoring run from the Lakers, including 16 points from James.

Davis, who finished with 31 points, became the first Lakers player since Kobe Bryant in 2005-06 to open the season with three successive games of at least 30 points, while James scored 32 points and made 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Kings were led by 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists from Domantas Sabonis, and 28 points and 10 assists from De’Aaron Fox.

Kevin Durant became the eighth player in NBA history to pass 29,000 points as he led the Phoenix Suns to a 114-102 home win over the Dallas Mavericks.

The 14-time All Star, who is in his 17th season, scored 31 points to take his career tally to 29,010.

James, the all-time leading scorer with 40,543 points, is the only other current player to have reached 29,000.

Reigning NBA champions the Boston Celtics mounted a late charge to triumph 124-118 at the winless Detroit Pistons.

The Celtics came from 112-106 down with just over five minutes left, with Jayson Tatum scoring 37 points and Jaylen Brown 24.

NBA: Anthony Davis and LeBron James lead LA Lakers to win over Indiana Pacers https://www.adomonline.com/nba-anthony-davis-and-lebron-james-lead-la-lakers-to-win-over-indiana-pacers/ Mon, 25 Mar 2024 09:00:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2372683 Anthony Davis and LeBron James starred as the Los Angeles Lakers put in their highest-scoring performance in 37 years to hold off the Indiana Pacers.

The Lakers won 150-145 with 36 points and 16 rebounds from Davis, while James added 26 points and 10 assists.

Indiana scored 46 points in the final quarter but the Lakers hit 10 in the last minute for a third successive win.

“We allowed them to score 145 so it was terrible defensively but we can do what we want offensively,” said Davis.

“But we’ve got to defend, especially when we’ve got a team [in trouble] like that. We don’t need to give them life, but at this point in the season, a win is a win.”

The Lakers, who start a run of six away games on Tuesday, are ninth in the Western Conference and have 11 matches remaining in the 82-game regular season. The top eight qualify for the end-of-season play-offs.

The Pacers are sixth in the Eastern Conference and have 10 games to play.

Elsewhere, the Milwaukee Bucks beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-93 to consolidate second position in the Eastern Conference.

James Harden returned to the Philadelphia 76ers with the LA Clippers but suffered a 121-107 defeat.

Harden finished with 12 points and 14 assists but the Clippers remain fourth in a tight race at the top of the Western Conference

The New Orleans Pelicans, who are one place behind the Clippers, heaped more misery on the Detroit Pistons with a 114-101 victory over the NBA’s worst side. The Pistons have now lost 59 of their 71 games.

And the Miami Heat kept up their play-off push with a 121-84 win over the higher ranked Cleveland Cavaliers.

NBA: Anthony Davis makes NBA history as Los Angeles Lakers beat Minnesota Timberwolves https://www.adomonline.com/nba-anthony-davis-makes-nba-history-as-los-angeles-lakers-beat-minnesota-timberwolves/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 09:15:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2367344 Anthony Davis scored 27 points with a season-high 25 rebounds on a historic night as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 120-109.

Davis added five assists, seven steals and three blocks to become the first player in NBA history with at least 25 points, 25 rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks in a game.

Team-mate LeBron James chipped in with 29 points.

“I think we’re hitting our stride,” Davis said.

“We’re just trying to keep going, keep pushing, knowing that just like last year, all we got to do is get in. We feel like it’s tough for anybody to beat us in a seven-game series. We like our chances against anybody at that point.”

The win at Crypto.com Arena, California leaves the Lakers sitting ninth in the Western Conference after back-to-back victories, while third-placed Minnesota have lost two in a row.

Elsewhere, the Milwaukee Bucks, who are second in the Eastern Conference, responded to successive losses to earn a 124-117 win on the road at the Los Angeles Clippers.

Damian Lillard led the was for the Bucks with 35 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo added 34 to ensure the Clippers, placed fourth in the Western Conference, were unable to extend their winning run to three.

At Kaseya Center in Florida, the Washington Wizards upset hosts the Miami Heat to claim a 110-108 victory with Kyle Kuzma scoring a game-high 32 points along with nine rebounds, four assists and two blocks.

It was a second successive win following a franchise-equalling 16-game losing streak for the Wizards and means the Heat have now lost three in a row, their worst run since seven successive defeats in January.

The Philadelphia 76ers halted a three-game losing sequence as Kelly Oubre Jr collected 18 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in a 79-73 win against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Cam Thomas, featuring in just his second game following a six-match absence due to an ankle injury, scored 29 points in 31 minutes to help the Brooklyn Nets to a 120-101 win against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Nets move within three-and-a-half games of 10th-placed the Atlanta Hawks, who lost 116-103 against the New Orleans Pelicans, in the race for the final play-off berth in the Eastern Conference.

NBA Cup final: Anthony Davis and LeBron James inspire LA Lakers to historic win against Indiana Pacers https://www.adomonline.com/nba-cup-final-anthony-davis-and-lebron-james-inspire-la-lakers-to-historic-win-against-indiana-pacers/ Sun, 10 Dec 2023 19:13:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2330317 Anthony Davis scored 41 points to help the Los Angeles Lakers to victory against the Indiana Pacers in the NBA’s first in-season tournament final.

Davis also registered 20 rebounds, five assists and four blocks, while team-mate LeBron James added 24 points and 11 rebounds in a 123-109 win.

James was also named the most valuable player of the inaugural NBA Cup.

“Records will be broken but one thing that will never be broken is being the first to do something,” said James, 38.

“We’re the first champions of the in-season tournament and nobody can ever top that.

“It’s great to be able to do it with such a historical franchise and even better to do it with a great, great cast of funny, engaged, competitive men over here.”

The Pacers closed to within three points with just over six minutes remaining, only for the Lakers to produce a run of 13 unanswered points on the way to victory.

Austin Reaves scored 28 points off the bench for the Lakers, while Tyrese Haliburton and team-mate Bennedict Mathurin top scored for the Pacers with 20 points each.

The final of the NBA Cup took place in Las Vegas and is the only game of the tournament which does not count towards the regular season standings.

“We’re sick, frustrated,” Haliburton said. “We just got outplayed tonight from the start of the game to the end of the game.

“Just didn’t do the job on loose balls, didn’t rebound, didn’t get enough stops when needed. They just outplayed us, and it’s frustrating.”

NBA: LeBron James and Anthony Davis lead Los Angeles Lakers fightback against Phoenix Suns https://www.adomonline.com/nba-lebron-james-and-anthony-davis-lead-los-angeles-lakers-fightback-against-phoenix-suns/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 10:15:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2310743 LeBron James and Anthony Davis rallied the Los Angeles Lakers for a 100-95 comeback victory over the Phoenix Suns.

The Lakers, playing in their home opener on Thursday, entered the fourth quarter with a 12-point deficit.

Davis scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as James added 21 points – 10 of which came in the final quarter.

Kevin Durant scored 39 points for the Suns, who failed to score during a seven-minute stretch in the fourth quarter as the Lakers took the lead.

In Thursday’s other game, the Philadelphia 76ers fell to a 118-117 defeat by the Milwaukee Bucks as both teams started their season.

Philadelphia were without 10-time NBA All-Star James Harden, who ESPN reports is facing scrutiny by the NBA concerning a possible violation of the league’s player participation policy – a new rule that means teams are able to rest only one star player per game.

The policy defines a star player as anybody picked in an All-NBA Team or NBA All-Star team in the previous three seasons.

The Bucks collected 39 of their points thanks to new guard Damian Lillard, who was making his Milwaukee debut after ending an 11-year spell with the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a three-team trade.

Giannis Antetokounmpo added 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucks, who trailed by eight points heading into the fourth quarter.
