The LaLiga side also announced that Fati, 22, has extended his Barça contract until the end of the 2027-28 season.

The deal includes an option for Monaco to make the transfer permanent next summer if Fati is a success in Ligue 1.

Sources have told ESPN that Fati was attracted by the idea of playing in France and competing in the Champions League as he aims to kickstart his career after playing very little football for Barça over the last 12 months.

He made 11 appearances in all competitions under Hansi Flick, although just three of them were starts and he only clocked 297 minutes in total.

After bursting on to the scene as a 16-year-old in 2019, Fati saw his progress hit by a series of injuries over the following years.

He joined Brighton on loan in 2023, scoring four times in 27 outings for the Premier League side, before returning to Barça last summer.

In total, he has netted 29 goals for the Catalan club in 123 outings and remains the youngest scorer ever in the Champions League at 17 years and 40 days old, 28 days younger than teammate Lamine Yamal.

He has also been capped 10 times by Spain, scoring two goals, but has not featured for his country since 2023.

Ansu Fati joins Brighton on long season loan from Barcelona https://www.adomonline.com/ansu-fati-joins-brighton-on-long-season-loan-from-barcelona/ Fri, 01 Sep 2023 16:24:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2289801 Spain forward Ansu Fati has completed a season-long loan move to Premier League side Brighton from Barcelona.

Fati had fallen down the pecking order at Barcelona, who need to create some space in their squad to sign Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo on loan.

Brighton’s deal for the 20-year-old does not include an obligation to buy.

Tottenham had also been linked with Fati but he is understood to have been impressed by Brighton’s style of play under manager Roberto de Zerbi.

De Zerbi said: “This is a great deal for all of us. I am sure Ansu will help us to reach a new target and we can help him get back to the level he deserves to be.”

The deal is a major coup for Brighton, who will be playing European football this season for the first time having qualified for the Europa League, where they will play Ajax, Marseille and AEK Athens in the group stage.

Brighton technical director David Weir added: “He is one of the most highly-rated young players in the world and arrives with an impressive amount of experience both domestically and in European competition, despite his age.

“This season is the biggest in the club’s history and we’re really happy that a player of Ansu’s quality is going to be part of it.

“We will give him the opportunity to embed himself in the squad and to get used to working with Roberto, but naturally we’re excited to see him in a Brighton shirt.”

Fati, who was born in Guinea-Bissau but chose to represent Spain and was part of their World Cup squad last year, signed a new contract with Barcelona in 2021 to run until 2027 which included a 1bn euro buyout clause.

If the deal goes through as planned, it would be a major coup for Brighton, who will be playing European football this season for the first time having qualified for the Europa League.

Fati, who was born in Guinea-Bissau but chose to represent Spain and was part of their World Cup squad last year, is widely viewed as one of the most promising young players in the game.

In 2021, he signed a new contract with Barcelona to run until 2027 and included a 1bn euro buyout clause.

Barcelona and Ansu Fati’s agent argue over contract length https://www.adomonline.com/barcelona-and-ansu-fatis-agent-argue-over-contract-length/ Fri, 20 Nov 2020 14:30:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1882946 Barcelona are disputing the length of the contract of their teenage star Ansu Fati with the player’s agent Jorge Mendes and father Bori Fati.

According to details published in El Mundo Deportivo, the club believes the 18-year-old is under contract until 2024 as they have the option to unilaterally extend the terms of his deal – in place until 2022 – by a further two seasons.

However, this claim is disputed by both Mendes and the player’s father, who say that this is not applicable as the deal was signed when the player was a youth-team player.

That means that there is a difference in interpretation of Paragraph 18 of the FIFA regulations. Point 2 of that paragraph specifies that “the maximum duration of a contract will be five years…players under 18 years of age (as was the case with Ansu when it was signed) cannot sign a contract of professionals of a duration greater than three years. Any clause of a longer period is not accepted.”

Therefore, the Blaugrana believe their two-year extension option is still valid but that is disputed as it would not be within FIFA regulations to offer such an extension.

There is little doubt the player would be keen to renew at the club, but this distinction is important in the negotiating position of the agent and would weaken the Catalan club’s bargaining point.

Fati is now one of the established attacking players at the club along with Lionel Messi and is aiming to establish himself ahead of the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele and Francisco Trincao.

The teenage prodigy has also starred for Spain in recent times – netting one goal in four international appearances having earned his first cap in September, while he has netted five goals in 10 games for his club this campaign.

However, the teenager is out injured until March after the club confirmed he had undergone knee surgery earlier this month.
