Shevchenko, the only candidate standing for election, was unanimously voted in at the XXVI UAF congress in Kyiv on Thursday, with all 93 of his fellow delegates backing him.

The 47-year-old replaces Andriy Pavelko, a member of the UEFA executive committee who had been in the role since 2015.

Shevchenko, whose term will last for five years,  said on his X account “Today, I start my new role as the President of the Ukrainian Association of Football.

“A big and responsible task lies ahead – to develop Ukrainian football in the most difficult time in the history of Ukraine.”

He added on the Ukraine FA website: “Ukrainian football should be popular and accessible, national teams should be the pride of every Ukrainian, and clubs should be strong and effective. We plan to implement the best global practices for the rapid development of Ukrainian football and use football to overcome the trauma of war. There is a lot of work ahead.”

The former AC Milan, Chelsea and Dynamo Kyiv striker is Ukraine’s all-time leading goalscorer, netting 48 times in 111 games before hanging up his boots in 2012 and moving into politics.

The 2004 Ballon d’Or winner was also the head coach of Ukraine from 2016 to 2021 and helped guide them to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals, where they were beaten by England.

Ukraine: Zinchenko & Shevchenko to captain teams in charity game at Chelsea https://www.adomonline.com/ukraine-zinchenko-shevchenko-to-captain-teams-in-charity-game-at-chelsea/ Wed, 31 May 2023 06:43:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2255080 Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko and legendary striker Andriy Shevchenko will captain teams in a ‘Game4Ukraine’ charity match that will be held at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge on 5 August.

The match will raise money for the reconstruction of a school in Ukraine that was hit by missiles following Russia’s invasion of the country.

It was announced by Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday.

“Some of the greatest players of the modern era” will also take part.

Former Chelsea player Shevchenko is Ukraine’s all-time top scorer and was also manager of the national team for five years, while Arsenal’s Zinchenko is the national team’s current captain.

The game will be played the weekend before the start of the 2023-24 Premier League season.

Arsenal could yet be involved in the Community Shield on that weekend if Manchester City beat Manchester United in Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Proceeds will go to the Mykhailo-Kotsiubynsky Lyceum in Chernihiv Oblast.

“The charity game aims to raise funds for the reconstruction of the school, where children will have their graduation ceremony among the ruins,” said Zinchenko, 26.

“They need this school and, as a father, I feel and share the pain of every Ukrainian child.

“I am sure we will see many great players on the pitch, from Arsenal, Chelsea and other top teams.”
