Debate over Ayew’s possible return to the national side has intensified following his move to NAC Breda as a free agent. The Ghana captain joined the Dutch outfit after spending six months without competitive football following his departure from Le Havre AC.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, Agbana acknowledged that the final decision on squad selection rests with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo. However, he insisted that dedication and loyalty to the national team should also play a role when choosing players.

“I always say the coach should be allowed to make the best decision,” Agbana said.

“But if you ask me, we need to reward sacrifice, hard work and loyalty. That should count. André Ayew has shown enormous commitment to the Black Stars, and I believe he should be included,” he added.

Ayew, Ghana’s most capped player, recently marked a milestone at club level by scoring his first goal for NAC Breda in Sunday’s 3–3 draw against Feyenoord.

Ghana, four-time African champions, will make their fifth appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.

The team will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his final squad for the tournament on June 1.

The Sudan assistant coach believes the time may have come for Ayew to step aside and allow the national team to move forward with a new generation of players.

“He might be a very, very good player,” he said. “But you ask yourself in this current setup, is he needed?”

“Is he needed? For me, no. Dede is my man, but for me, you leave when the applause is high.

“Dede himself should let it go and then focus on his club football,” he said in an interview with Luv FM.

His comments come after Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, said he would not be surprised to see Ayew included in Ghana’s squad for the World Cup in June.

Ayew, who joined NAC Breda as a free agent in January, was on the scoresheet on Sunday as his side played out a 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.

The 34-year-old remains one of Ghana’s most decorated footballers, having led the Black Stars to four World Cups, and he has not officially announced his retirement from international football.

However, Osei-Fosu believes national team decisions should be based on the team’s current needs rather than reputation.

According to him, stepping aside at the right time can help preserve a player’s legacy.

To support his argument, the former Dreams FC coach referenced Italian legend Francesco Totti, who once turned down a recall to the Italy national football team to focus on his club career.

“That’s why I like these white people. At one point, Totti was called up to the national team, but he said, ‘No, I want to focus on club football,’” he added.

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce the team’s final World Cup squad on June 1.

The Ghanaian forward found the net for the first time since joining the Dutch side, heading home late in the first half in a thrilling contest at the Rat Verlegh Stadium.

The visitors made a brighter start, with Ayase Ueda putting Feyenoord ahead in the 19th minute. NAC Breda responded quickly through Kamal Sowah, who restored parity for the hosts.

Feyenoord regained the lead in the 31st minute when Luciano Valente found the back of the net, but the advantage was short-lived as Boyd Lucassen levelled the score once again for Breda.

Ayew then produced a decisive moment just before the interval, rising high to head home and give the home side a 3-2 lead heading into halftime.

After the break, Ueda struck again to secure a share of the spoils for Feyenoord, with the match finishing 3-3.

The result leaves NAC Breda in 17th place on the league table with 23 points as they continue their battle to avoid relegation. Their next assignment will be against Go Ahead Eagles next weekend.

Since arriving at Breda, Ayew has made nine appearances and is gradually becoming an influential figure in the squad.

The experienced attacker is also hoping his performances in the Netherlands could boost his chances of earning a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His possible return to the national team continues to spark debate among fans, though the final decision will lie with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the tournament alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Speaking on Burning Issues on Adom FM, the Buem MP highlighted that the NAC Breda forward is steadily regaining form and said he would not oppose the U-20 World Cup winner being included in the final squad.

“We have asked the Technical Team to put up a strong team so we can go and compete. Players like Antoine Semenyo and Inaki Williams, among others, are doing well,” Mr. Adams said.

“Dede Ayew, too, is picking up, and as long as he has not retired, I won’t be surprised if he makes it to the squad,” he added.

Ayew, 36, joined the Dutch side on December 31, 2025, as a free agent and has featured in eight matches this season.

His potential inclusion has sparked debate among fans, with some valuing his World Cup experience and others advocating for younger, more dynamic players.

“I never thought about it because my body is good. I feel good,” he said, emphasising his fitness after years of high-level play. “I’ve played a lot of years, and I’ve been fit for several years, able to play game after game. I prepare myself every time to have a better tomorrow on the field, off the field. When the moment comes, your body will tell you. That’s how I see it, and for now, my body is not responding negatively at all. So I need to continue working. The matches will get me fitter.”

Reacting to Ayew’s comments in an interview with Asempa FM, Afriyie backed the veteran forward’s stance. “Andre Ayew is still playing, and for me, nobody can force him to retire,” he said.

Since joining NAC Breda, Ayew has made six league appearances, starting once as he works to regain full match sharpness. He is in contention to feature when NAC Breda host FC Volendam at the Rat Verlegh Stadion on Saturday.

“I never thought about it (retirement) because my body is good, I feel good. I live my life day to day, so I prepare myself every time to have a better tomorrow on the field and off the field,” he said.

“I don’t think about that. When the moment comes, your body will tell you,” he added.

“The club has big objectives for now and the future. For me, it was important to feel the desire from the club and from the coach, which was very important, as well as the fan base. I am a player who plays with a lot of energy, and having the fans behind me helps. When you are at a club with a strong fan base and a noisy stadium, it’s better for me,” he added.

“Maybe it was like 10 per cent. Even me, I was surprised when they told me. There were rumours that it was because of me that André came here. Of course, maybe in a small way; he watched videos of me when I played for NAC, and there is a lot of respect for what I did here,” he said.

Amoah revealed that Ayew was attracted to NAC Breda because of its strong history with Ghanaian players. He added that the coaching staff had carefully assessed Ayew’s fitness before finalising the move.

“They asked me if he was fit because they had seen his training videos, sometimes with his dad. If you ask me, the role I played was not much. I think the coaches did their work,” Amoah explained.

Ayew is now training with the squad as NAC Breda prepare for a challenging Eredivisie clash against league leaders PSV this weekend.

The Ghana forward, who had been without a club for six months following his departure from French outfit Le Havre, signed for the Dutch side earlier this month on a deal running until the end of the season.

Ayew and his teammates will now shift focus to a crucial home clash against NEC Nijmegen at the Rat Verlegh Stadion as they continue their fight for survival.

The 36-year-old has signed a deal until the end of the season, with an option to extend depending on his impact.

“I’m someone who really enjoys challenges, both personally and as part of a team. I find that here at NAC. I want to do everything I can to help the club and my teammates,” Ayew said.

“We’re in a situation where staying in the Eredivisie is the only thing that matters.”

Ayew has not featured in competitive football since his last match for Le Havre against Strasbourg on May 17, 2025, but he is confident about stepping into his new role.

“The mental aspect is perhaps the most important thing in this situation. Together with our supporters, we must fight this battle head-on in the second half of the season.”

NAC Breda currently sit at the bottom of the Eredivisie, having collected just 13 points from 17 matches. The club will be looking to Ayew’s experience to guide them through the relegation battle.

Ayew becomes the latest Ghanaian to don the NAC Breda jersey, joining a list that includes Matthew Amoah, Kingsley Boateng, Jeffrey Sarpong, Thomas Agyepong, Eric Atuahene, Divine Naah, and Aminu Mohammed.

The 36-year-old joins the Eredivisie outfit as they fight to avoid relegation, currently sitting at the bottom of the table with 13 points from 17 matches.

In a statement, NAC confirmed: “In the battle for survival in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, NAC has added André Ayew (36), a new striker to its squad. The experienced French-Ghanaian striker has signed a contract until the end of the current season, with a club option for another season in Breda.”

Ayew, who had been unattached following his departure from French side Le Havre, had been maintaining fitness with his father’s club, Nania FC, ahead of the move to the Netherlands.

The former Black Stars captain boasts an impressive career, having made his mark at Olympique de Marseille, Swansea City, and West Ham United.

Over nearly 600 appearances across the Champions League, Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Premier League, Championship, and Turkish Süper Lig, Ayew has scored more than 160 goals. On the international stage, he has earned 120 caps for Ghana, netting 24 goals.

The ex-Black Stars captain has been without a team since leaving French side Le Havre at the end of last season. In the meantime, the 35-year-old has been maintaining his fitness with Nania FC, the club owned by his father, Ghana football legend Abedi Pele.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Ntim said, “I have watched Andre Ayew train with Nania FC, and he looks fit. I can say on authority that Andre Ayew is likely to join a new club in January.”

He further suggested that a return to regular club football could see Ayew back in the Black Stars squad. “If Andre Ayew joins a new club in January and stays fit, he is likely to make the Black Stars squad for the World Cup,” Ntim added.

Ayew has been absent from the national team setup since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Speaking at the official launch of the 2025 U-13 MILO Champions League in Accra last Friday, Ayew said the historic victory in Egypt remains a deep source of pride for both himself and the nation.

“It’s very easy. We brought the world to Ghana — yeah, that’s it. We brought the whole world to Ghana, and we hope that it’s going to happen again pretty soon, Insha Allah,” he said.

Ghana made history in October 2009 when the Black Satellites defeated Brazil 4–3 on penalties after a goalless draw, becoming the first African country to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

During the event, Ayew was unveiled as an ambassador for the 2025 MILO U-13 Champions League, alongside former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah. He urged young players to take full advantage of the platform to build memories and showcase their abilities.

Addressing the players, the U-20 World Cup winner commended the Queens for their remarkable performance at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, where they secured a third-place finish to mark their return to the continental stage.

“You guys did something great a few months ago at the WAFCON,” Ayew said. 

“It’s important that you don’t let this legacy be erased by noise and outside people talking [about unpaid bonuses].”

“[Unpaid bonuses] is something I’ve been through, so I know how you feel,” Ayew told the squad. “Sometimes things get delayed, but they’ll be done.”

The Black Queens had earlier boycotted training sessions in protest over outstanding $9,500 bonuses but have since resumed preparations. They will face Egypt in the second leg of their WAFCON qualifier on Tuesday, carrying a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Ismailia last week.

“Ayew is like my big brother,” Owusu told Flashscore.com. “He’s a top guy, and since we’ve played together in the national team, he always talks to me. In Ligue 1, he has a crazy legacy.”

The Black Queens returned to Ghana on Monday, July 28, to a warm and heroic reception following their bronze medal finish at WAFCON — their first podium finish since 2016.

Sowah, who earned his first senior national team call-up ahead of Ghana’s friendly match against Liberia in September 2023, made an immediate impact by providing an assist in the 3-1 victory at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Reflecting on his time in camp, the now-Singida Black Stars forward said Ayew played a key role in helping him settle into the team.

“Andre Ayew and other players gave me good counsel,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“I had discussions with several players, but Andre Ayew was always with me, talking and advising me.”

Sowah also credited the former West Ham and Swansea City forward with helping him secure a move to Libya earlier in his career.

“Andre Ayew helped me secure my move to Libya. He advised me to use the money wisely, and he has been very helpful.”

Now plying his trade in Tanzania, Sowah had a stellar campaign in the just-ended top-flight season, scoring 13 goals in as many appearances.

Despite Ayew’s impressive performances in the French Ligue 1 with Le Havre, the 35-year-old was left out of Ghana’s squad for the Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

When asked about his decision to omit the experienced forward, Addo stated in an interview with Joy Sports that other players were currently ahead of Ayew in his selection process.

“If we need Andre Ayew, we will call him. At the moment, I see others ahead of him,” Addo remarked.

However, Tackie did not take kindly to the coach’s comments and expressed his displeasure in a social media post, arguing that Addo had shown a lack of respect for Ayew.

He questioned the coach’s stance, highlighting that Addo himself had previously emphasized active club participation as a key criterion for selection.

“Coach Otto Addo’s comments on Andre Ayew are shocking and disappointing. On numerous occasions, the same coach has said one of the key criteria for selection into the national team is active club participation. How can Ayew, Ghana’s most-capped player, a three-time World Cup veteran, and a proven leader, be deemed unworthy even when playing well at his club in the French league?” he quizzed.

He further criticized Addo’s decision, pointing out that the coach had failed to secure Ghana’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“Ayew’s legacy and commitment to the Black Stars are undeniable. His experience, leadership, and track record in major tournaments speak volumes. It is baffling that a coach who failed to qualify Ghana for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations would so casually dismiss the contributions of a player who has consistently delivered for his country and is playing week in and week out at his club,” he continued.

Tackie described Addo’s comments as “unprofessional and unbecoming” of a national team coach, arguing that Ayew deserved more recognition for his contributions to the Black Stars.

“Such remarks are not only disrespectful to Ayew but also undermine his sacrifices and the pride he has brought to Ghana football. Coach Addo’s comments are unprofessional and unbecoming of someone in his position.”

Andre Ayew last featured for Ghana during the March 2024 international break in a 2-2 draw against Uganda. Since making his debut in 2007, the Le Havre forward has earned 120 caps and scored 24 goals for the national team.

The 35-year-old Le Havre attacker has not featured for Ghana since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and was once again left out of the squad for the recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, despite his consistent performances at club level.

Ghana will face Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, before traveling to Morocco to take on Madagascar on Monday, March 24.

With Ghana set to regroup later this month for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, the New Edubiase United owner believes Ayew’s experience and leadership would be invaluable to the squad.

“I believe Andre Ayew must be given a chance at the Black Stars again,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“We all know Ayew’s commitment to the Black Stars, and we know if he doesn’t score, he will assist, so I believe Andre Ayew must be given the chance again because we need him,” he added.

Currently second in Group I with nine points, the Black Stars will take on Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT.

They will then travel to Morocco to face Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24.

In an interview with BBC Africa, Ayew stressed the importance of mental resilience in the digital age, advising players to filter constructive criticism from negativity.

“Everything has a good and bad side, so sometimes try to understand where the criticism comes from – it can help you,” the former Swansea City and West Ham attacker said.

“We play football for the people, especially in our country and continent where we love the game so much.

“But today, if somebody is frustrated, they can just write anything (online). That’s where we need to be strong and not pay attention to that sort of thing.

“You want to make the people happy, but when it’s just nonsense talk, push it away,” he added.

The 2009 U-20 World Cup winner has enjoyed a professional career spanning 18 years since making his club debut. Since earning his first call-up to Ghana’s senior national team in 2007 under coach Claude Le Roy, Ayew has become one of the country’s most capped players.

In an interview with BBC Africa, the veteran forward reflected on his longevity in football.

“You need to decide how long you want to stay in the game,” Ayew said. “Good players around you help, and as time goes on, you get smarter. You find spaces where, maybe in the past, you wouldn’t because you can smell it. I love what I’m doing, and I’m not ready to stop.”

Since rejoining Le Havre, Ayew has netted three goals in nine Ligue 1 starts, though his team currently sits 17th in the standings.

With nine clubs on his résumé and no signs of slowing down, the 34-year-old forward remains determined to extend his career.

The 35-year-old found the net in the 85th minute, providing a consolation goal against his former club at the Orange Vélodrome.

Despite the loss, Ayew received warm applause from the home crowd in recognition of his effort.

Marseille dominated the match, taking a commanding lead with three goals in the first half, scored between the 25th and 43rd minutes.

Their advantage grew in the second half as Mason Greenwood set up Elye Wahi for the fourth goal in the 66th minute, followed by a fifth from Ulisses Garcia in the 75th minute.

Ayew’s goal marked a personal milestone, as it was his first in the league this season, achieved during his ninth appearance and sixth start.

Despite both players representing the Black Stars in major international tournaments, including the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, their relationship has been strained.

Gyan, however, clarified during an Instagram Live session that the reported animosity was fabricated by people who influenced Ayew for their own gain.

“Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people,” he said.

“That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me I am not a rival to anyone,” Gyan added.

The reported discord intensified when Ayew succeeded Gyan as captain of the Black Stars ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Ayew made these comments following their 3-0 defeat to Strasbourg over the weekend, a result that leaves them in 17th place on the league table with just 12 points.

After the loss, Le Havre supporters expressed their frustration with boos directed at the players.

In an interview with the club’s media, Ayew spoke about the tough circumstances.

“It’s not easy to be at home and see that the fans are not happy, but I understand them,” he said.

“We give everything, they also give everything. We are all in this situation together. We cannot give them the wins and that is what people really expect. We are going to try to make them happy but we really need them. Without them, it’s going to be complicated.

“I know they are still here they are with us but in difficult times we need them more and I can assure them we are going to do everything in May Le Havre will still be in Ligue 1,” he added.

Le Havre will aim to bounce back when they face Stade Briochin in the French Cup before taking on Olympique Marseille.

Thompson shared that Appiah was frustrated with the trio and initially decided to exclude them. However, the intervention of the management committee played a crucial role in resolving the situation.

In an interview with Joy Sports, the former Hearts of Oak Board Secretary recounted the tense moment when Appiah expressed his frustrations and his plan to drop the players.

“At one point, Kwasi Appiah had problems with Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, and Wakaso. You remember that incident. Go back to history. He [Kwasi Appiah] wanted to drop them. He said he had dropped them. I’m telling you the truth now,” Mr. Thompson said.

He explained that the management committee, in response, advised Appiah to handle the matter differently.

“We [the then Black Stars management committee] said, look, because of Jordan, Andre, and particularly their father Abedi [Pele], who is an icon, if you had problems with them in the team, we plead with you to go and see Abedi [Pele] and speak to him because you can’t treat Abedi’s children that way. Let the father know, and see if he can intervene.”

Thompson added that a third-party intervention, including a conversation with the players, helped resolve the conflict.

“It took Alhaji Hearts, whom we called to also speak to the boys about Kwasi Appiah’s concerns. Later on, Kwasi Appiah agreed, brought them back, and they came to save the team. So a lot of things happen at the management committee level [of the Black Stars]. You can check all these with George Afriyie.”

He emphasized that the management committee’s efforts were often instrumental in addressing such issues, provided they stayed within their scope.

“The management team does good work, provided they stay within their purview,” he added.

In light of the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the management committee has been dissolved, and Otto Addo’s future as head coach will be decided on Wednesday.

Ayew, who captains the team, has not played for the Black Stars since March 2024, as he has been regularly overlooked by head coach Otto Addo and his technical staff.

Ayew recently resumed club football after joining Le Havre in October, where he has already delivered impressive performances in Ligue 1.

Agyemang-Badu, who played alongside Ayew in Ghana’s U-20 World Cup-winning squad, believes the 34-year-old captain should decide for himself when to retire.

“Ayew is one of my very good friends and I have been privileged to have worked with him. He was my captain (at U-20 level), although he had been playing for the Black Stars,” Agyemang-Badu told Flashscore.

“If he thinks his body is still responding and the coaches still need him, we will all support him to be there.”

However, Badu emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with the coach.

“We have brought in a coach to do a great job for us, so everything lies in the hands of the coach now. Ayew now has a club, he has played some games, and will get his form back.”

“If the coach thinks his experience is still needed as captain to help the guys grow, we will support him 120 per cent. If the coach thinks otherwise, we will support him as well.”

Badu concluded by acknowledging Ayew’s contributions to the Black Stars and supporting his autonomy in making retirement decisions.

“Andre knows his body more than I do, and nobody can force him to retire from the national team or from his club side.”

“If he wakes up tomorrow and says thank you, Ghana, it is time to focus on club football only, we will say thank you and appreciate his contributions because he has done a lot for the Black Stars,” he added.

The 33-year-old winger returns to the club after six months last season, signing a one-year deal that will keep him with Le Havre until the end of the campaign.

Ayew previously played in Ligue 1 with Olympique Marseille before leaving in 2015 for Swansea City.

His latest stint in France saw him make 19 appearances for Le Havre, scoring five goals and helping the club avoid relegation.

Le Havre, currently 14th in Ligue 1 after six matches, will benefit from Ayew’s vast experience in European football.

His career has included time in the English Premier League with Swansea City, West Ham United, and Nottingham Forest, as well as stints at Fenerbahçe in Turkey and Al Sadd in Qatar.

Although Ayew was part of Ghana’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), he has been absent from the Black Stars last three call-ups under coach, Otto Addo.

Owusu made his debut for the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier playoff against Nigeria, coming off the bench in the second half of the second leg in Abuja.

Since then, he has added nine more caps to his name, including appearances in the recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger in September.

The 26-year-old also shared his childhood admiration for Kevin-Prince Boateng and his excitement about playing with André Ayew.

“Growing up, I was a huge fan of Kevin-Prince Boateng. I really admired him as a kid,” Owusu told Flashscore. André Ayew is also a big figure, especially for those of us from France. Getting the chance to play with him in the national team has been a tremendous honour for me,” he added.

Owusu is expected to be part of the Black Stars squad for the upcoming doubleheader against Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers next month.

Addo has announced his squad for Ghana’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger, with Ayew notably missing from the list.

This follows Ayew’s earlier omission from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) in June.

The 45-year-old coach emphasized that Ayew could still make a return to the team if he consistently performs at a high level.

Ayew, who has been without a club since his contract with Le Havre ended, was not included in the squad for the second time in a row.

When asked about Ayew’s absence, Addo responded, “Andre Ayew is a good player, but at the moment, he is not here. He doesn’t have a club, but nobody knows the future. If he gets a club and performs, maybe scoring 20 goals, he could return because we are building something for the future.”

Ghana is set to face Angola on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Berkane, Morocco, on September 10.

The team will begin training on September 2 at the Accra Sports Stadium before heading to Kumasi for the Angola game.

The former Olympique Marseille and Swansea City forward has been left out of Ghana’s squad for the second time, following his earlier omission from the team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.

Explaining his decision, Addo said “We have to look a little further. We have to into the next AFCON but also if God permits and we might qualify for that too we look one to three years ahead. We have to build a squad for that.

“We are building up and I think we did quite well the last time even though it was tough, we know the next games are going to be even tougher because everybody expects us to win.

“It’s going to be tough and we might also get some knockbacks but this is football and we are looking for long-term development that is why we decided, also, the last time not to invite Andre,” he added.

Ghana is set to play against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Berkane on September 10.

Meanwhile, Ayew is currently a free agent after his contract with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre expired at the end of the 2023/24 season.

Speaking at a sports psychology lecture at the University of Ghana last Friday, Andre Ayew reflected on his career and stressed the significance of representing Ghana.

“The national team is so important to my life, my family’s life because today a lot of big men in Ghana have come through the huge university here; our life isn’t through university and through school, our life, my family is about the game and from this country not from anywhere else so when we know we have to wear this jersey, for me it’s all about sacrifices,” the former West Ham United and Swansea City forward said.

The 34-year-old, currently a free agent after his time with Le Havre, expressed immense pride in wearing Ghana’s colours.

“I don’t gain my bread, my family’s living wearing the national team colours, I wear these national colours by pride and honour,” the U-20 World Cup winner added.

Andre Ayew is currently clubless after leaving Le Havre where he spent six months on a loan deal in the French Ligue 1.

Despite his commitment, Andre Ayew was left out of Black Stars squad in the back-to-back wins against Mali and Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers last month.

The 34-year-old made this statement while speaking as a guest lecturer at the University of Ghana during a lecture on Sports Psychology on Friday.

In his speech, Ayew emphasized the critical role of sports psychology for elite athletes and recounted his experiences with the Black Stars.

The 2008 AFCON, hosted by Ghana and marking Ayew’s debut in an international tournament, remains a cherished memory for him.

“Competing at the 2008 AFCON was one of the biggest moments in my life. As a young person with dreams, having them realized in such a moment is incomparable,” he said.

Ayew also reflected on the heartbreak of losing his second AFCON final in 2015, when Ghana was defeated by Côte d’Ivoire in a penalty shootout.

“It’s part of our sport and the mental challenges we face. Sometimes you fall deeply, but you have to rise and continue,” he stated.

Andre Ayew was not selected by coach Otto Addo for last month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

The senior national team has faced tough times in recent years. Having participated in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups, the Black Stars have struggled to achieve significant results since.

Speaking about psychological effects on humans and how to handle them at the Legon Sports Psychology class on Friday, the Le Havre forward said, “We are patriotic, the Ghana Black Stars I know are always patriotic, the team is patriotic and wants to win.

“But we are in a phase where we have different people, so we cannot compare the players in the early 2000s to the current generation.

“We have a young squad who are now understanding what it means to play for the team. They started early; it’s not like the older players who began playing in the local league before leaving.

“These current young ones leave the shores of Ghana very early, so they tend to cope more with what they’re experiencing abroad, so coming back to Ghana to readapt to our culture and values is not easy,” he said.

Ayew also gave his thoughts on what could help address this issue.

“What we can do is, psychologically, everybody needs to understand what Ghana means, what Ghana football means to the people. The young ones need more support to focus on what playing for the country means,” he added.

Last month, the Black Stars recorded back-to-back wins against Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The senior national team in recent times have struggled to win games and has suffered back-to-back AFCON group phase elimination.

The players have been criticized due to their performance.

However, the 34-year-old, speaking as a guest lecturer during a sports psychology class at the University of Ghana on Friday said patriotism has never been in doubt as far as the players are concerned.

Ayew added that, the players are committed and dedicated to representing the country and winning laurels, something Ghanaians have not seen in recent times.

“Yes, I can sit here and say that the team is patriotic. The team wants to win. We are all Ghanaians, and we are in a team with a different generation of players. Coming up psychologically, everyone needs to understand what Ghana football means to the people of the country,” Ayew said.

“Today we have a young squad, who are now understanding bit by bit everything that is coming. They started early, we had players who played for Liberty Professionals, and Hearts of Oak in Ghana before leaving the country. Today most of the players leave very early, very early so they cultivate the outside mentality easier. So, when they come home, they must readapt themselves.

“The patriotism has nothing to do with the psychology, they want to play: if not they won’t wear the jersey. What they need is patience and the job will be done,” he added.

The Le Havre forward made this plea after scoring twice in the All-Stars team’s 2-1 victory over the Northern Region select side last weekend.

Following the match, Ayew emphasized the urgent need for improvement to the stadium’s pitch to boost the quality of football played there.

“It went really well. It was great. We have a wonderful stadium here, and I hope and pray that we’ll be able to work on the pitch for it to be better for our teams who are here,” Ayew stated.

“So Kerala United, Tamale City, and also the national team will have the chance to play and come back for the Northern people to see us because when we look at the stadium it’s a great stadium,” he added.

“Andre Ayew is still the captain of the team but Otto Addo has decided that he will not play these two games and we must respect that because if he fails, the head coach will be sacked so we must believe in the decisions and judgement of Otto Addo,” he added.

Ghana, despite Ayew’s omission, secured hard-fought victories, defeating Mali 2-1 in Bamako and triumphing 4-3 against Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The 34-year-old forward has been left out of Ghana’s squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, despite his impressive performances in the recently concluded French Ligue 1 season.

Ayew scored five goals in 19 appearances, playing a crucial role in keeping Le Havre in the French top flight.

Speaking to Asempa FM on the Ultimate Sports Show, Sarpong, who also previously coached Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, shared his thoughts on the decision.

“André Ayew has paid his dues, but the manner in which we say goodbye to our players is not pleasant. I’m being skeptical because Ayew is in form. He has found his form again, considering his performance in the just-ended season. Ayew was scoring in the French Ligue, so I thought his form could carry him to the national team.

“If André Ayew is to be retired from the team, it should be after the qualifiers. I don’t understand why we push our captains out like this. It happened to Kwesi Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, and now André. The debate will continue, but I hope Ayew will take it in good faith and move on,” he added.

Ayew holds the record for the most appearances for Ghana with 120 caps and has scored 24 goals for the national team.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will begin their training today at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Ghana is scheduled to play in Bamako on June 6 before hosting the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 10 for Matchday 3 and 4 games, respectively.

The Black Stars, currently fourth in Group I, will aim to get back to winning ways after recording a win and a defeat in their first two matches.

The Le Havre attacker has been left out of Ghana’s 26-man squad for the upcoming games against Mali and Central African Republic next month.

This decision comes as a surprise given that Ayew finished the just-ended French Ligue 1 season on a high, scoring six goals.

However, speaking to Asempa FM on the Sports Nite Show on Wednesday, Solar Ayew admitted that the captaincy can be taken away from the former West Ham and Swansea City man but football will remain in the Ayew family.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will begin their training camp on Thursday at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon.

Black Stars will face Mali at Stade 26 Mars in Bamako on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at 19:00. Ghana will then face the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Monday, June 10, 2024.
