The 36-year-old last featured for the Ghana national football team during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Debate over Ayew’s possible return to the national side has intensified following his move to NAC Breda as a free agent. The Ghana captain joined the Dutch outfit after spending six months without competitive football following his departure from Le Havre AC.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, Agbana acknowledged that the final decision on squad selection rests with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo. However, he insisted that dedication and loyalty to the national team should also play a role when choosing players.

“I always say the coach should be allowed to make the best decision,” Agbana said.

“But if you ask me, we need to reward sacrifice, hard work and loyalty. That should count. André Ayew has shown enormous commitment to the Black Stars, and I believe he should be included,” he added.

Ayew, Ghana’s most capped player, recently marked a milestone at club level by scoring his first goal for NAC Breda in Sunday’s 3–3 draw against Feyenoord.

Ghana, four-time African champions, will make their fifth appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.

The team will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his final squad for the tournament on June 1.

Andre Ayew may no longer be needed in Black Stars – Ignatius Osei-Fosu https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-may-no-longer-be-needed-in-black-stars-ignatius-osei-fosu/ Mon, 09 Mar 2026 13:47:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638340 Former Ghana Premier League coach Ignatius Osei-Fosu has questioned the need for Andre Ayew to return to the Ghana national football team as debate continues over his possible inclusion in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Sudan assistant coach believes the time may have come for Ayew to step aside and allow the national team to move forward with a new generation of players.

“He might be a very, very good player,” he said. “But you ask yourself in this current setup, is he needed?”

“Is he needed? For me, no. Dede is my man, but for me, you leave when the applause is high.

“Dede himself should let it go and then focus on his club football,” he said in an interview with Luv FM.

His comments come after Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, said he would not be surprised to see Ayew included in Ghana’s squad for the World Cup in June.

Ayew, who joined NAC Breda as a free agent in January, was on the scoresheet on Sunday as his side played out a 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.

The 34-year-old remains one of Ghana’s most decorated footballers, having led the Black Stars to four World Cups, and he has not officially announced his retirement from international football.

However, Osei-Fosu believes national team decisions should be based on the team’s current needs rather than reputation.

According to him, stepping aside at the right time can help preserve a player’s legacy.

To support his argument, the former Dreams FC coach referenced Italian legend Francesco Totti, who once turned down a recall to the Italy national football team to focus on his club career.

“That’s why I like these white people. At one point, Totti was called up to the national team, but he said, ‘No, I want to focus on club football,’” he added.

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce the team’s final World Cup squad on June 1.

Andre Ayew scores as NAC Breda held at home by Feyenoord https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-scores-as-nac-breda-held-at-home-by-feyenoord/ Sun, 08 Mar 2026 19:12:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638315 Andre Ayew opened his scoring account for NAC Breda in an entertaining 3-3 draw against Feyenoord in the Eredivisie on Sunday afternoon.

The Ghanaian forward found the net for the first time since joining the Dutch side, heading home late in the first half in a thrilling contest at the Rat Verlegh Stadium.

The visitors made a brighter start, with Ayase Ueda putting Feyenoord ahead in the 19th minute. NAC Breda responded quickly through Kamal Sowah, who restored parity for the hosts.

Feyenoord regained the lead in the 31st minute when Luciano Valente found the back of the net, but the advantage was short-lived as Boyd Lucassen levelled the score once again for Breda.

Ayew then produced a decisive moment just before the interval, rising high to head home and give the home side a 3-2 lead heading into halftime.

After the break, Ueda struck again to secure a share of the spoils for Feyenoord, with the match finishing 3-3.

The result leaves NAC Breda in 17th place on the league table with 23 points as they continue their battle to avoid relegation. Their next assignment will be against Go Ahead Eagles next weekend.

Since arriving at Breda, Ayew has made nine appearances and is gradually becoming an influential figure in the squad.

The experienced attacker is also hoping his performances in the Netherlands could boost his chances of earning a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His possible return to the national team continues to spark debate among fans, though the final decision will lie with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the tournament alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

I will not be surprised should Andre Ayew make Black Stars squad for 2026 World Cup – Sports Minister https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-not-be-surprised-should-andre-ayew-make-black-stars-squad-for-2026-world-cup-sports-minister/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 22:42:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2636823 The Minister of Sport and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has indicated that he would have no objection to Andre Ayew being included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on Burning Issues on Adom FM, the Buem MP highlighted that the NAC Breda forward is steadily regaining form and said he would not oppose the U-20 World Cup winner being included in the final squad.

“We have asked the Technical Team to put up a strong team so we can go and compete. Players like Antoine Semenyo and Inaki Williams, among others, are doing well,” Mr. Adams said.

“Dede Ayew, too, is picking up, and as long as he has not retired, I won’t be surprised if he makes it to the squad,” he added.

Ayew, 36, joined the Dutch side on December 31, 2025, as a free agent and has featured in eight matches this season.

His potential inclusion has sparked debate among fans, with some valuing his World Cup experience and others advocating for younger, more dynamic players.

Andre Ayew last represented the Ghana national football team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

For their fifth World Cup appearance, Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

In preparation, the team will regroup in March for friendlies against Austria and Germany, followed by a final warm-up match against Mexico in May.

The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that the squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the tournament.

Nobody can force Andre Ayew to retire – George Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/nobody-can-force-andre-ayew-to-retire-george-afriyie/ Fri, 20 Feb 2026 11:33:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2633195 Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, says Andre Ayew still has plenty to offer football despite ongoing speculation about his future.

Ayew, 36, spent the first half of the 2025/26 season without a club after parting ways with Le Havre AC. The experienced forward, who last represented the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has since signed a short-term deal with Dutch side NAC Breda until the end of the season.

In an interview with ESPN, the former Olympique de Marseille and Swansea City attacker dismissed suggestions that retirement is imminent.

“I never thought about it because my body is good. I feel good,” he said, emphasising his fitness after years of high-level play. “I’ve played a lot of years, and I’ve been fit for several years, able to play game after game. I prepare myself every time to have a better tomorrow on the field, off the field. When the moment comes, your body will tell you. That’s how I see it, and for now, my body is not responding negatively at all. So I need to continue working. The matches will get me fitter.”

Reacting to Ayew’s comments in an interview with Asempa FM, Afriyie backed the veteran forward’s stance. “Andre Ayew is still playing, and for me, nobody can force him to retire,” he said.

Since joining NAC Breda, Ayew has made six league appearances, starting once as he works to regain full match sharpness. He is in contention to feature when NAC Breda host FC Volendam at the Rat Verlegh Stadion on Saturday.

The 36-year-old returned to club football after leaving French side Le Havre AC at the end of last season, signing a short-term deal with Dutch Eredivisie outfit NAC Breda until the end of the current campaign.

Ayew, who last featured for the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, said he remains in good physical condition. Speaking to ESPN, the midfielder explained that he focuses on maintaining his fitness and improving each day, both on and off the pitch.

“I never thought about it (retirement) because my body is good, I feel good. I live my life day to day, so I prepare myself every time to have a better tomorrow on the field and off the field,” he said.

“I don’t think about that. When the moment comes, your body will tell you,” he added.

Since joining NAC Breda, Ayew has made six league appearances, including one start, as he works toward regaining full match fitness.

I always want to play at the highest level – Andre Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/i-always-want-to-play-at-the-highest-level-andre-ayew/ Wed, 18 Feb 2026 11:20:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2632327 Andre Ayew has opened up about the reasoning behind his move to Dutch side NAC Breda, describing it as a fresh challenge at a crucial stage of his career.

The Ghana international joined the Eredivisie outfit in January on a short-term deal until the end of the season, following a six-month period without competitive football after leaving Le Havre AC.

Speaking to ESPN, the 36-year-old said his desire to compete at a high level played a key role in the decision.

“I am a footballer, and I always want to play at the highest level. The Dutch league is a very good league, technically and physically,” he said.

Ayew explained that he was seeking a project where his experience would be valued, similar to his previous stint in France.

“I was looking at challenging myself again, like I did in Le Havre over the last two years, where I could bring something to the table and where the belief is mutual from both sides.”

He also cited the club’s ambition and the support from key figures at Breda as decisive factors.

“The club has big objectives for now and the future. For me, it was important to feel the desire from the club and from the coach, which was very important, as well as the fan base. I am a player who plays with a lot of energy, and having the fans behind me helps. When you are at a club with a strong fan base and a noisy stadium, it’s better for me,” he added.

Since arriving in the Netherlands, Ayew has made six league appearances for NAC Breda, including one start, as he continues to establish himself in the team.

Matthew Amoah speaks on role in André Ayew’s move to NAC Breda https://www.adomonline.com/matthew-amoah-speaks-on-role-in-andre-ayews-move-to-nac-breda/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 13:49:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622538 NAC Breda technical staff member Matthew Amoah has commented on his involvement in bringing former Black Stars captain André Ayew to the Dutch club.

Ayew, who had been without a club for six months after leaving Le Havre, signed with NAC Breda until the end of the season.

In an interview with the club’s media team, Amoah—who represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup—expressed surprise at the signing and dismissed claims that he was the main reason behind Ayew’s arrival.

“Maybe it was like 10 per cent. Even me, I was surprised when they told me. There were rumours that it was because of me that André came here. Of course, maybe in a small way; he watched videos of me when I played for NAC, and there is a lot of respect for what I did here,” he said.

Amoah revealed that Ayew was attracted to NAC Breda because of its strong history with Ghanaian players. He added that the coaching staff had carefully assessed Ayew’s fitness before finalising the move.

“They asked me if he was fit because they had seen his training videos, sometimes with his dad. If you ask me, the role I played was not much. I think the coaches did their work,” Amoah explained.

Ayew is now training with the squad as NAC Breda prepare for a challenging Eredivisie clash against league leaders PSV this weekend.

Andre Ayew makes NAC Breda debut in goalless draw against FC Groningen https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-makes-nac-breda-debut-in-goalless-draw-against-fc-groningen/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 15:21:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617922 Andre Ayew marked his return to competitive football with a debut appearance for NAC Breda in their goalless away draw against FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday.

The Ghana forward, who had been without a club for six months following his departure from French outfit Le Havre, signed for the Dutch side earlier this month on a deal running until the end of the season.

Ayew was introduced in the 57th minute of the Matchday 18 encounter at the Euroborg Stadium, replacing young French attacker Moussa Soumano, as Breda sought to inject experience into their forward line.

Despite limited time to settle, the former Ghana captain made a positive impression during his 33-minute outing, recording 20 touches, attempting a shot, completing a successful dribble and winning several aerial and ground duels to steady NAC’s attacking play.

The contest also highlighted a strong Ghanaian contingent, with Ayew featuring alongside compatriots Denis Odoi and Kamal Sowah in a closely fought encounter.

The stalemate leaves NAC Breda rooted in the relegation zone, 17th on the Eredivisie standings with 14 points from 18 matches.

Ayew and his teammates will now shift focus to a crucial home clash against NEC Nijmegen at the Rat Verlegh Stadion as they continue their fight for survival.

I will do everything possible to ensure NAC Breda survive relegation – Andre Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-do-everything-possible-to-ensure-nac-breda-survive-relegation-andre-ayew/ Wed, 31 Dec 2025 13:12:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2614917 Former Ghana captain André Ayew has joined NAC Breda in a bid to help the Dutch side avoid relegation from the Eredivisie.

The 36-year-old has signed a deal until the end of the season, with an option to extend depending on his impact.

“I’m someone who really enjoys challenges, both personally and as part of a team. I find that here at NAC. I want to do everything I can to help the club and my teammates,” Ayew said.

“We’re in a situation where staying in the Eredivisie is the only thing that matters.”

Ayew has not featured in competitive football since his last match for Le Havre against Strasbourg on May 17, 2025, but he is confident about stepping into his new role.

“The mental aspect is perhaps the most important thing in this situation. Together with our supporters, we must fight this battle head-on in the second half of the season.”

NAC Breda currently sit at the bottom of the Eredivisie, having collected just 13 points from 17 matches. The club will be looking to Ayew’s experience to guide them through the relegation battle.

Ayew becomes the latest Ghanaian to don the NAC Breda jersey, joining a list that includes Matthew Amoah, Kingsley Boateng, Jeffrey Sarpong, Thomas Agyepong, Eric Atuahene, Divine Naah, and Aminu Mohammed.

The 36-year-old joins the Eredivisie outfit as they fight to avoid relegation, currently sitting at the bottom of the table with 13 points from 17 matches.

In a statement, NAC confirmed: “In the battle for survival in the VriendenLoterij Eredivisie, NAC has added André Ayew (36), a new striker to its squad. The experienced French-Ghanaian striker has signed a contract until the end of the current season, with a club option for another season in Breda.”

Ayew, who had been unattached following his departure from French side Le Havre, had been maintaining fitness with his father’s club, Nania FC, ahead of the move to the Netherlands.

The former Black Stars captain boasts an impressive career, having made his mark at Olympique de Marseille, Swansea City, and West Ham United.

Over nearly 600 appearances across the Champions League, Ligue 1, Ligue 2, Premier League, Championship, and Turkish Süper Lig, Ayew has scored more than 160 goals. On the international stage, he has earned 120 caps for Ghana, netting 24 goals.

Andre Ayew to join a new club in January? https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-to-join-a-new-club-in-january/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 22:50:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608959 Former Techiman City FC president Charles Kwadwo Ntim has expressed confidence that Andre Ayew could secure a new club this January.

The ex-Black Stars captain has been without a team since leaving French side Le Havre at the end of last season. In the meantime, the 35-year-old has been maintaining his fitness with Nania FC, the club owned by his father, Ghana football legend Abedi Pele.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Ntim said, “I have watched Andre Ayew train with Nania FC, and he looks fit. I can say on authority that Andre Ayew is likely to join a new club in January.”

He further suggested that a return to regular club football could see Ayew back in the Black Stars squad. “If Andre Ayew joins a new club in January and stays fit, he is likely to make the Black Stars squad for the World Cup,” Ntim added.

Ayew has been absent from the national team setup since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

‘I hope Ghana wins a trophy soon’ – André Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/i-hope-ghana-wins-a-trophy-soon-andre-ayew/ Thu, 20 Nov 2025 06:21:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2602012 Former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew has described Ghana’s 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup triumph as a defining moment that “brought the whole world to Ghana,” expressing optimism that the country will soon celebrate another global football success.

Speaking at the official launch of the 2025 U-13 MILO Champions League in Accra last Friday, Ayew said the historic victory in Egypt remains a deep source of pride for both himself and the nation.

“It’s very easy. We brought the world to Ghana — yeah, that’s it. We brought the whole world to Ghana, and we hope that it’s going to happen again pretty soon, Insha Allah,” he said.

Ghana made history in October 2009 when the Black Satellites defeated Brazil 4–3 on penalties after a goalless draw, becoming the first African country to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

During the event, Ayew was unveiled as an ambassador for the 2025 MILO U-13 Champions League, alongside former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah. He urged young players to take full advantage of the platform to build memories and showcase their abilities.

“Most importantly, they go home with good memories — memories to remember that in 2025 they played in the MILO Games and this is what went down. They will never forget it, and they will tell their younger brothers and the next generation. So I’m waiting to see a lot of skills,” he said.

Ayew highlighted the tournament’s impact on developing talent, boosting confidence, and shaping future dreams. He also praised Nestlé Ghana and the Ghana Education Service for their sustained commitment to youth development.

“I am truly humbled to join you today as the brand icon for the 2025 edition of the MILO Under 13 Champions League,” he noted.

“This tournament is more than a competition; it is a platform that has shaped dreams, discovered stars and built confidence in many young talents across Ghana. For that, I want to commend Nestlé Ghana and the Ghana Education Service for their unwavering commitment to nurturing youth development through sports,” he added.

2026 WAFCONQ: Andre Ayew urges Black Queens to uphold national pride amid bonus dispute https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wafconq-andre-ayew-urges-black-queens-to-uphold-national-pride-amid-bonus-dispute/ Tue, 28 Oct 2025 05:35:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2592993 Former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew has called on the Black Queens to stay focused on their mission and uphold their legacy despite the ongoing impasse over unpaid bonuses.

Ayew paid a visit to the team’s camp in Accra on Monday, ahead of their decisive 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Egypt at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Addressing the players, the U-20 World Cup winner commended the Queens for their remarkable performance at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, where they secured a third-place finish to mark their return to the continental stage.

“You guys did something great a few months ago at the WAFCON,” Ayew said.

“It’s important that you don’t let this legacy be erased by noise and outside people talking [about unpaid bonuses].”

He encouraged the players to remain united and maintain their focus on representing Ghana with pride.

“I’ve been there as a player, and you are building something the Black Queens have never had. Don’t tarnish what you’ve achieved because of money. Yes, money is important, I’ll be the first to say that, but it’s about national pride.”

Ayew also reassured the team that the issue of unpaid bonuses would eventually be resolved, urging them to stay calm and trust the process.

“[Unpaid bonuses] is something I’ve been through, so I know how you feel,” Ayew told the squad. “Sometimes things get delayed, but they’ll be done.”

The Black Queens had earlier boycotted training sessions in protest over outstanding $9,500 bonuses but have since resumed preparations. They will face Egypt in the second leg of their WAFCON qualifier on Tuesday, carrying a 3-0 advantage from the first leg in Ismailia last week.

The former West Ham United and Olympique Marseille forward has been absent from the Black Stars since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, where Ghana failed to win a game and exited at the group stage.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Charles argued that the 33-year-old’s vast experience and dedication would be invaluable to the national team as they prepare for the global showpiece in the USA, Canada, and Mexico next summer.

“I admit that Andre Ayew is ageing, but we know that he is dedicated and committed to the national team,” he said.

“Andre deserves a place in tge squad for the World Cup. Even if he starts from the bench, his commitment, experience, and passion will make a big difference for the team,” Charles added.

Ghana will learn their group-stage opponents for the 2026 World Cup on December 5.

Ayew, who amassed over 200 appearances for Marseille and scored 60 goals, remains one of Ghana’s most celebrated exports to Ligue 1.

His stints with Lorient and Le Havre further cemented his reputation as a standout performer in the French top flight.

“Ayew is like my big brother,” Owusu told Flashscore.com. “He’s a top guy, and since we’ve played together in the national team, he always talks to me. In Ligue 1, he has a crazy legacy.”

The Ghana midfielder believes Ayew’s influence will endure long after his retirement from the league.

“Everywhere you are in France, you see Ghanaians referring to him or his father, Abedi Pele. He is a big man who is leaving Ligue 1, but with what he did and showed, people will keep speaking about it. People will keep his name high because he’s a top player.”

Now a key figure at Auxerre, Owusu aspires to continue the tradition of Ghanaian excellence in France.

He emphasised the importance of humility and determination—qualities Ayew consistently displayed throughout his career.

“First of all, be humble and not think that now we have arrived. We need to keep the same hunger and willingness to fight,” Owusu said.

Le Havre AC announces departure of Andre Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/le-havre-ac-announces-departure-of-andre-ayew/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 16:33:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562584 French Ligue 1 outfit Le Havre AC has officially parted ways with Ghanaian forward André Ayew ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The 35-year-old joined the club in November 2023 as a free agent following his departure from English Premier League side Nottingham Forest.

He later re-signed with Le Havre in October 2024 on a one-year contract after his initial deal expired during the summer.

During his time with the club, Ayew played a pivotal role in helping Le Havre avoid relegation, contributing nine goals in 49 appearances across all competitions.

In a heartfelt farewell message, the club paid tribute to the former Olympique Marseille star, stating:
“Thank you, André. Monster of combativeness, André Ayew was an example for all heaven and navy, he who so well understood the HAC and its audience, Le Havre and its inhabitants. Good luck, André!”

Ayew, who famously led Ghana to U-20 World Cup glory in 2009, has had a storied career across Europe and Asia.

His club journey has seen him feature for nine teams, including FC Lorient, Arles-Avignon, Swansea City, West Ham United, Fenerbahçe, Al-Sadd, and Nottingham Forest.

Andre Ayew helped me with my transfer to Libya – Former Medeama striker https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-helped-me-with-my-transfer-to-libya-former-medeama-striker/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 11:21:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551070 Former Medeama SC striker Jonathan Sowah has heaped praise on ex-Black Stars captain Andre Ayew for his invaluable support and guidance during his early days with the national team.

Sowah, who earned his first senior national team call-up ahead of Ghana’s friendly match against Liberia in September 2023, made an immediate impact by providing an assist in the 3-1 victory at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Reflecting on his time in camp, the now-Singida Black Stars forward said Ayew played a key role in helping him settle into the team.

“Andre Ayew and other players gave me good counsel,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“I had discussions with several players, but Andre Ayew was always with me, talking and advising me.”

Sowah also credited the former West Ham and Swansea City forward with helping him secure a move to Libya earlier in his career.

“Andre Ayew helped me secure my move to Libya. He advised me to use the money wisely, and he has been very helpful.”

Now plying his trade in Tanzania, Sowah had a stellar campaign in the just-ended top-flight season, scoring 13 goals in as many appearances.

‘Failed’ Otto Addo cannot disrespect Andre Ayew – Fiifi Tackie https://www.adomonline.com/failed-otto-addo-cannot-disrespect-andre-ayew-fiifi-tackie/ Fri, 28 Mar 2025 09:58:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2519744 Fiifi Tackie, the spokesperson for the Ayew family, has strongly criticized Black Stars head coach Otto Addo following his remarks about Andre Ayew’s exclusion from the national team.

Despite Ayew’s impressive performances in the French Ligue 1 with Le Havre, the 35-year-old was left out of Ghana’s squad for the Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

When asked about his decision to omit the experienced forward, Addo stated in an interview with Joy Sports that other players were currently ahead of Ayew in his selection process.

“If we need Andre Ayew, we will call him. At the moment, I see others ahead of him,” Addo remarked.

However, Tackie did not take kindly to the coach’s comments and expressed his displeasure in a social media post, arguing that Addo had shown a lack of respect for Ayew.

He questioned the coach’s stance, highlighting that Addo himself had previously emphasized active club participation as a key criterion for selection.

“Coach Otto Addo’s comments on Andre Ayew are shocking and disappointing. On numerous occasions, the same coach has said one of the key criteria for selection into the national team is active club participation. How can Ayew, Ghana’s most-capped player, a three-time World Cup veteran, and a proven leader, be deemed unworthy even when playing well at his club in the French league?” he quizzed.

He further criticized Addo’s decision, pointing out that the coach had failed to secure Ghana’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

“Ayew’s legacy and commitment to the Black Stars are undeniable. His experience, leadership, and track record in major tournaments speak volumes. It is baffling that a coach who failed to qualify Ghana for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations would so casually dismiss the contributions of a player who has consistently delivered for his country and is playing week in and week out at his club,” he continued.

Tackie described Addo’s comments as “unprofessional and unbecoming” of a national team coach, arguing that Ayew deserved more recognition for his contributions to the Black Stars.

“Such remarks are not only disrespectful to Ayew but also undermine his sacrifices and the pride he has brought to Ghana football. Coach Addo’s comments are unprofessional and unbecoming of someone in his position.”

Andre Ayew last featured for Ghana during the March 2024 international break in a 2-2 draw against Uganda. Since making his debut in 2007, the Le Havre forward has earned 120 caps and scored 24 goals for the national team.

Why Andre Ayew has no place in Black Stars – Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/why-andre-ayew-has-no-place-in-black-stars-otto-addo/ Thu, 27 Mar 2025 16:01:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2519560 Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has explained the exclusion of veteran forward Andre Ayew from the senior national team, stating that other players are currently ahead of him in the squad hierarchy.

The 35-year-old Le Havre attacker has not featured for Ghana since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and was once again left out of the squad for the recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, despite his consistent performances at club level.

“If we need Andre Ayew, we will call him. At the moment, I see others ahead of him,” Addo told Joy Sports in an interview.

Ayew has been in decent form for French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, scoring four goals in 11 starts this season.

In his absence, his younger brother, Jordan Ayew, has captained the Black Stars to back-to-back victories—a 5-0 win over Chad and a 3-0 triumph against Madagascar.

These results have propelled Ghana to the top of Group I in the World Cup qualifiers with 15 points, with four matches remaining in the campaign.

Andre Ayew unbothered by Black Stars omission – Agyemang-Badu https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-unbothered-by-black-stars-omission-agyemang-badu/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 11:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2515514 Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has revealed that Andre Ayew remains unfazed despite being left out of Ghana’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Ayew, who has earned over 120 caps and scored 24 goals for the Black Stars, has not featured for the team since their disappointing group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Despite his impressive performances for Le Havre in the French Ligue 1—where he has netted five goals this season—the experienced forward has once again been overlooked.

Reacting to the omission, Agyemang-Badu emphasized the need to respect the coach’s decision.

“We all know that the criteria for selecting players into the Black Stars is performance. Andre Ayew is performing, but if the coach [Otto Addo] has made a decision, we need to respect it,” he stated.

The former Black Stars midfielder also assured fans that Ayew is not troubled by the situation.

“I have spoken to Andre Ayew, and he is not worried,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars officially opened camp today in Accra and will hold their first training session at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Mohammed Kudus, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Jojo Wollacott, Antoine Semenyo, and Thomas Partey have all reported to camp.

Ghana will face Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, before traveling to Morocco to take on Madagascar on Monday, March 24.

The Black Stars currently sit second in Group I with nine points, level with leaders Comoros.

Abdul Salam Yakubu calls for Andre Ayew’s return to Black Stars https://www.adomonline.com/abdul-salam-yakubu-calls-for-andre-ayews-return-to-black-stars/ Fri, 07 Mar 2025 11:56:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2512392 Renowned football administrator Abdul Salam Yakubu has urged the handlers of the Black Stars to recall Andre Ayew ahead of the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Ayew, who has been absent from the Black Stars since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), was left out following Otto Addo’s reappointment as head coach in March 2024.

However, the experienced forward has been in impressive form for Le Havre in the French Ligue 1 this season.

The 34-year-old has netted four goals in 17 appearances, proving his continued relevance at the top level.

With Ghana set to regroup later this month for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, the New Edubiase United owner believes Ayew’s experience and leadership would be invaluable to the squad.

“I believe Andre Ayew must be given a chance at the Black Stars again,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“We all know Ayew’s commitment to the Black Stars, and we know if he doesn’t score, he will assist, so I believe Andre Ayew must be given the chance again because we need him,” he added.

Currently second in Group I with nine points, the Black Stars will take on Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21, at 19:00 GMT.

They will then travel to Morocco to face Madagascar at the Grand Stade d’Al Hoceima on Monday, March 24.

Andre Ayew scores in Le Havre’s 4-3 comeback win at Lens https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-scores-in-le-havres-4-3-comeback-win-at-lens/ Sun, 02 Mar 2025 12:24:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2510118 Andre Ayew played a crucial role in Le Havre’s thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over RC Lens in Ligue 1 on Saturday at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.

The Ghanaian forward registered a goal and an assist, inspiring his team to a vital win in their relegation battle.

Lens took an early lead when Neil El Aynaoui converted a penalty just two minutes into the game. Ruben Aguilar then doubled their advantage with a powerful volley midway through the first half.

Le Havre, however, responded strongly. Issa Soumaré sparked the comeback with a stunning long-range strike before setting up Ayew, who calmly slotted home to level the score at 2-2 by halftime.

Florian Sotoca restored Lens’ lead after the break, but Ayew remained instrumental. His dangerous cross forced an error from Malang Sarr, allowing Josué Casimir to equalize.

The match reached a dramatic climax in stoppage time when Casimir won a penalty. Ahmed Hassan stepped up and converted from the spot to seal a remarkable win for Le Havre.

Ayew now has five league goals and two assists this season, underlining his leadership as Le Havre fights to avoid relegation.

The victory lifts them to 18th place with 20 points, as they prepare for a crucial clash against AS Saint-Étienne next weekend at the Stade Océane.

I focus on the game, not online distractions – Andre Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/i-focus-on-the-game-not-online-distractions-andre-ayew/ Wed, 12 Feb 2025 06:21:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2503413 Ghana international Andre Ayew has emphasized his commitment to spreading positivity, stating that he steers clear of engaging in meaningless discussions, particularly on social media.

The Le Havre forward has been absent from the Black Stars squad since Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Ivory Coast. Throughout his tenure with the national team, the 35-year-old has often faced criticism over his performances.

In an interview with BBC Africa, Ayew stressed the importance of mental resilience in the digital age, advising players to filter constructive criticism from negativity.

“Everything has a good and bad side, so sometimes try to understand where the criticism comes from – it can help you,” the former Swansea City and West Ham attacker said.

“We play football for the people, especially in our country and continent where we love the game so much.

“But today, if somebody is frustrated, they can just write anything (online). That’s where we need to be strong and not pay attention to that sort of thing.

“You want to make the people happy, but when it’s just nonsense talk, push it away,” he added.

In an interview with BBC Africa, the veteran forward reflected on his longevity in football.

“You need to decide how long you want to stay in the game,” Ayew said. “Good players around you help, and as time goes on, you get smarter. You find spaces where, maybe in the past, you wouldn’t because you can smell it. I love what I’m doing, and I’m not ready to stop.”

Since rejoining Le Havre, Ayew has netted three goals in nine Ligue 1 starts, though his team currently sits 17th in the standings.

With nine clubs on his résumé and no signs of slowing down, the 34-year-old forward remains determined to extend his career.

Despite both players representing the Black Stars in major international tournaments, including the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, their relationship has been strained.

Gyan, however, clarified during an Instagram Live session that the reported animosity was fabricated by people who influenced Ayew for their own gain.

“Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people,” he said.

Ayew made these comments following their 3-0 defeat to Strasbourg over the weekend, a result that leaves them in 17th place on the league table with just 12 points.

After the loss, Le Havre supporters expressed their frustration with boos directed at the players.

In an interview with the club’s media, Ayew spoke about the tough circumstances.

“It’s not easy to be at home and see that the fans are not happy, but I understand them,” he said.

“We give everything, they also give everything. We are all in this situation together. We cannot give them the wins and that is what people really expect. We are going to try to make them happy but we really need them. Without them, it’s going to be complicated.

“I know they are still here they are with us but in difficult times we need them more and I can assure them we are going to do everything in May Le Havre will still be in Ligue 1,” he added.

Le Havre will aim to bounce back when they face Stade Briochin in the French Cup before taking on Olympique Marseille.

Le Havre forward André Ayew has urged his teammates to do everything in their power to avoid defeat in their upcoming matches against Stade Briochin and Olympique Marseille.

The team has been struggling in the current French Ligue 1 season, sitting 17th in the standings with just 12 points from 15 games.

Le Havre will look to bounce back when they face Briochin in the Coupe de France Round of 64 on Saturday, December 21, followed by a crucial clash against Marseille on January 5.

In a post-match interview after Le Havre’s 3-0 loss to Strasbourg over the weekend, Ayew emphasized the importance of the upcoming fixtures.

“It’s true that is not easy but there is a match on Saturday which is important, it’s the Coupe de France and then there’s the Velodrome (against Marseille) and they are big matches and we’re going to try to do everything so as not to come out of these two matches with zero points.”

Le Havre has recorded four wins and 11 losses in Ligue 1, having conceded 18 goals so far this season.

How Kwesi Appiah planned to exclude Ayew Brothers and Wakaso from Black Stars squad https://www.adomonline.com/how-kwesi-appiah-planned-to-exclude-ayew-brothers-and-wakaso-from-black-stars-squad/ Mon, 25 Nov 2024 15:28:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2475502 Former Black Stars Management Committee member, Ernest Thompson, has disclosed that Kwesi Appiah once considered dropping Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, and Mubarak Wakaso from his squad due to ongoing issues with the players.

Thompson shared that Appiah was frustrated with the trio and initially decided to exclude them. However, the intervention of the management committee played a crucial role in resolving the situation.

In an interview with Joy Sports, the former Hearts of Oak Board Secretary recounted the tense moment when Appiah expressed his frustrations and his plan to drop the players.

“At one point, Kwasi Appiah had problems with Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, and Wakaso. You remember that incident. Go back to history. He [Kwasi Appiah] wanted to drop them. He said he had dropped them. I’m telling you the truth now,” Mr. Thompson said.

He explained that the management committee, in response, advised Appiah to handle the matter differently.

“We [the then Black Stars management committee] said, look, because of Jordan, Andre, and particularly their father Abedi [Pele], who is an icon, if you had problems with them in the team, we plead with you to go and see Abedi [Pele] and speak to him because you can’t treat Abedi’s children that way. Let the father know, and see if he can intervene.”

Thompson added that a third-party intervention, including a conversation with the players, helped resolve the conflict.

“It took Alhaji Hearts, whom we called to also speak to the boys about Kwasi Appiah’s concerns. Later on, Kwasi Appiah agreed, brought them back, and they came to save the team. So a lot of things happen at the management committee level [of the Black Stars]. You can check all these with George Afriyie.”

He emphasized that the management committee’s efforts were often instrumental in addressing such issues, provided they stayed within their scope.

“The management team does good work, provided they stay within their purview,” he added.

In light of the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the management committee has been dissolved, and Otto Addo’s future as head coach will be decided on Wednesday.

Only Black Stars technical team can make the final decision on Andre Ayew’s future – Agyemang-Badu https://www.adomonline.com/only-black-stars-technical-team-can-make-the-final-decision-on-andre-ayews-future-agyemang-badu/ Sat, 09 Nov 2024 18:34:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2470204 Former Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has warned against pushing Andre Ayew out of the Black Stars.

Ayew, who captains the team, has not played for the Black Stars since March 2024, as he has been regularly overlooked by head coach Otto Addo and his technical staff.

Ayew recently resumed club football after joining Le Havre in October, where he has already delivered impressive performances in Ligue 1.

Agyemang-Badu, who played alongside Ayew in Ghana’s U-20 World Cup-winning squad, believes the 34-year-old captain should decide for himself when to retire.

“Ayew is one of my very good friends and I have been privileged to have worked with him. He was my captain (at U-20 level), although he had been playing for the Black Stars,” Agyemang-Badu told Flashscore.

“If he thinks his body is still responding and the coaches still need him, we will all support him to be there.”

However, Badu emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with the coach.

“We have brought in a coach to do a great job for us, so everything lies in the hands of the coach now. Ayew now has a club, he has played some games, and will get his form back.”

“If the coach thinks his experience is still needed as captain to help the guys grow, we will support him 120 per cent. If the coach thinks otherwise, we will support him as well.”

Badu concluded by acknowledging Ayew’s contributions to the Black Stars and supporting his autonomy in making retirement decisions.

“Andre knows his body more than I do, and nobody can force him to retire from the national team or from his club side.”

“If he wakes up tomorrow and says thank you, Ghana, it is time to focus on club football only, we will say thank you and appreciate his contributions because he has done a lot for the Black Stars,” he added.

His latest stint in France saw him make 19 appearances for Le Havre, scoring five goals and helping the club avoid relegation.

Le Havre, currently 14th in Ligue 1 after six matches, will benefit from Ayew’s vast experience in European football.

His career has included time in the English Premier League with Swansea City, West Ham United, and Nottingham Forest, as well as stints at Fenerbahçe in Turkey and Al Sadd in Qatar.

Although Ayew was part of Ghana’s squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), he has been absent from the Black Stars last three call-ups under coach, Otto Addo.

The 26-year-old also shared his childhood admiration for Kevin-Prince Boateng and his excitement about playing with André Ayew.

2025 AFCONQ: I will only invite Andre Ayew when … – Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/2025-afconq-i-will-only-invite-andre-ayew-when-otto-addo/ Sat, 31 Aug 2024 09:32:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2441114 Black Stars coach, Otto Addo says the door remains open for Andre Ayew despite his absence from the latest national team selection.

Addo has announced his squad for Ghana’s upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Angola and Niger, with Ayew notably missing from the list.

This follows Ayew’s earlier omission from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic (CAR) in June.

The 45-year-old coach emphasized that Ayew could still make a return to the team if he consistently performs at a high level.

Ayew, who has been without a club since his contract with Le Havre ended, was not included in the squad for the second time in a row.

When asked about Ayew’s absence, Addo responded, “Andre Ayew is a good player, but at the moment, he is not here. He doesn’t have a club, but nobody knows the future. If he gets a club and performs, maybe scoring 20 goals, he could return because we are building something for the future.”

Ghana is set to face Angola on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Berkane, Morocco, on September 10.

The team will begin training on September 2 at the Accra Sports Stadium before heading to Kumasi for the Angola game.

2025 AFCONQ: We are looking at the long-term – Otto Addo on Andre Ayew’s snub https://www.adomonline.com/2025-afconq-we-are-looking-at-the-long-term-otto-addo-on-andre-ayews-snub/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 07:34:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2441248 Otto Addo has clarified the reasons behind Andre Ayew’s exclusion from the Black Stars squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches.

The former Olympique Marseille and Swansea City forward has been left out of Ghana’s squad for the second time, following his earlier omission from the team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.

Explaining his decision, Addo said “We have to look a little further. We have to into the next AFCON but also if God permits and we might qualify for that too we look one to three years ahead. We have to build a squad for that.

“We are building up and I think we did quite well the last time even though it was tough, we know the next games are going to be even tougher because everybody expects us to win.

“It’s going to be tough and we might also get some knockbacks but this is football and we are looking for long-term development that is why we decided, also, the last time not to invite Andre,” he added.

Ghana is set to play against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium on September 5, followed by a match against Niger in Berkane on September 10.

Meanwhile, Ayew is currently a free agent after his contract with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre expired at the end of the 2023/24 season.

I wear the national jersey for national pride and not for financial gains – Andre Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/i-wear-the-national-jersey-for-national-pride-and-not-for-financial-gains-andre-ayew/ Tue, 16 Jul 2024 08:42:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2422191 Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew emphasized that his commitment to playing for the national team stems from a deep sense of patriotism rather than financial motives.

Speaking at a sports psychology lecture at the University of Ghana last Friday, Andre Ayew reflected on his career and stressed the significance of representing Ghana.

“The national team is so important to my life, my family’s life because today a lot of big men in Ghana have come through the huge university here; our life isn’t through university and through school, our life, my family is about the game and from this country not from anywhere else so when we know we have to wear this jersey, for me it’s all about sacrifices,” the former West Ham United and Swansea City forward said.

The 34-year-old, currently a free agent after his time with Le Havre, expressed immense pride in wearing Ghana’s colours.

“I don’t gain my bread, my family’s living wearing the national team colours, I wear these national colours by pride and honour,” the U-20 World Cup winner added.

Andre Ayew is currently clubless after leaving Le Havre where he spent six months on a loan deal in the French Ligue 1.

Andre Ayew reveals defining moment in his career https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-reveals-defining-moment-in-his-career/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 18:54:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2421739 Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew, has shared that participating in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was a significant milestone in his life.

The 34-year-old made this statement while speaking as a guest lecturer at the University of Ghana during a lecture on Sports Psychology on Friday.

In his speech, Ayew emphasized the critical role of sports psychology for elite athletes and recounted his experiences with the Black Stars.

The 2008 AFCON, hosted by Ghana and marking Ayew’s debut in an international tournament, remains a cherished memory for him.

“Competing at the 2008 AFCON was one of the biggest moments in my life. As a young person with dreams, having them realized in such a moment is incomparable,” he said.

Ayew also reflected on the heartbreak of losing his second AFCON final in 2015, when Ghana was defeated by Côte d’Ivoire in a penalty shootout.

“It’s part of our sport and the mental challenges we face. Sometimes you fall deeply, but you have to rise and continue,” he stated.

Andre Ayew was not selected by coach Otto Addo for last month’s 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic.

We are patriotic – Andre Ayew defends Black Stars players https://www.adomonline.com/we-are-patriotic-andre-ayew-defends-black-stars-players/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 18:51:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2421746 Andre Ayew has said the perceived lack of passion from some Black Stars players is due to the different career paths of players in the team.

The senior national team has faced tough times in recent years. Having participated in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups, the Black Stars have struggled to achieve significant results since.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the team exited at the group stage, and in the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon and Ivory Coast, they were also eliminated in the group stage.

These failures have raised concerns among fans who feel the current players lack the commitment to represent the nation.

However, Ayew maintains that the dedication and commitment within the team remain unchanged since his debut.

But, the career paths of the new generation have had a different impact on the team, as these players do not get the same exposure to the cultural values that staying in the country demands.

Speaking about psychological effects on humans and how to handle them at the Legon Sports Psychology class on Friday, the Le Havre forward said, “We are patriotic, the Ghana Black Stars I know are always patriotic, the team is patriotic and wants to win.

“But we are in a phase where we have different people, so we cannot compare the players in the early 2000s to the current generation.

“We have a young squad who are now understanding what it means to play for the team. They started early; it’s not like the older players who began playing in the local league before leaving.

“These current young ones leave the shores of Ghana very early, so they tend to cope more with what they’re experiencing abroad, so coming back to Ghana to readapt to our culture and values is not easy,” he said.

Ayew also gave his thoughts on what could help address this issue.

“What we can do is, psychologically, everybody needs to understand what Ghana means, what Ghana football means to the people. The young ones need more support to focus on what playing for the country means,” he added.

Last month, the Black Stars recorded back-to-back wins against Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Andre Ayew calls for support for ‘young’ Black Stars players https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-calls-for-support-for-young-black-stars-players/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 18:46:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2421771 Andre Ayew has called for support for the current Black Stars squad, dismissing the perceived lack of patriotism.

The senior national team in recent times have struggled to win games and has suffered back-to-back AFCON group phase elimination.

The players have been criticized due to their performance.

However, the 34-year-old, speaking as a guest lecturer during a sports psychology class at the University of Ghana on Friday said patriotism has never been in doubt as far as the players are concerned.

Ayew added that, the players are committed and dedicated to representing the country and winning laurels, something Ghanaians have not seen in recent times.

“Yes, I can sit here and say that the team is patriotic. The team wants to win. We are all Ghanaians, and we are in a team with a different generation of players. Coming up psychologically, everyone needs to understand what Ghana football means to the people of the country,” Ayew said.

“Today we have a young squad, who are now understanding bit by bit everything that is coming. They started early, we had players who played for Liberty Professionals, and Hearts of Oak in Ghana before leaving the country. Today most of the players leave very early, very early so they cultivate the outside mentality easier. So, when they come home, they must readapt themselves.

“The patriotism has nothing to do with the psychology, they want to play: if not they won’t wear the jersey. What they need is patience and the job will be done,” he added.

Andre Ayew was recently left out of Black Stars squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic last month.

Ayew is currently in Ghana as search for a new club continues following the expiration of his deal with Ligue 1 side Le Havre.

There will be always a debate – Andre Ayew speaks on Black Stars captaincy https://www.adomonline.com/there-will-be-always-a-debate-andre-ayew-speaks-on-black-stars-captaincy/ Sat, 13 Jul 2024 18:36:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2421736 Andre Ayew has acknowledged that debates are inevitable whenever a new captain is selected for the senior national team, the Black Stars.

During a lecture on sports psychology at the University of Ghana on Friday, the Le Havre forward discussed the challenges and expectations future captains of the national team will face.

“There will always be a debate sooner or later,” Ayew stated.

“The next one who is coming, there will be another debate. The next one is coming in the next 10 years, and there will be another debate. Anybody who, tomorrow, is going to be the leader of our national team should be ready for it. There are things you just need to learn from, prepare, and let it brush off” he added.

Ayew is familiar with the controversy surrounding the Black Stars captaincy. When the captaincy was taken from Asamoah Gyan and given to Ayew, it ignited significant debate and controversy.

In Ayew’s absence for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers last month, Thomas Partey has taken on the role of captain for the Black Stars.

As Ayew suggested, a new captain will eventually be chosen to lead the team, continuing the tradition of debate and scrutiny that accompanies this prestigious role.

Meanwhile, Ghana hopes to secure qualification for the next Africa Cup of Nations as well as the Mundial slated to be hosted USA, Canada and Mexico.

Fix Aliu Mahama Stadium – Andre Ayew charges authorities https://www.adomonline.com/fix-aliu-mahama-stadium-andre-ayew-charges-authorities/ Wed, 26 Jun 2024 21:26:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2413885 Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew has called on authorities to refurbish the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale.

The Le Havre forward made this plea after scoring twice in the All-Stars team’s 2-1 victory over the Northern Region select side last weekend.

Following the match, Ayew emphasized the urgent need for improvement to the stadium’s pitch to boost the quality of football played there.

“It went really well. It was great. We have a wonderful stadium here, and I hope and pray that we’ll be able to work on the pitch for it to be better for our teams who are here,” Ayew stated.

“So Kerala United, Tamale City, and also the national team will have the chance to play and come back for the Northern people to see us because when we look at the stadium it’s a great stadium,” he added.

Ayew’s appeal aligns with a recent request by Assistant Black Stars Captain, Thomas Partey, who has urged the government to invest in at least one world-class stadium to elevate the standard of football in Ghana.

Otto Addo’s decision to drop Andre Ayew must be respected – Ex-Black Stars midfielder https://www.adomonline.com/otto-addos-decision-to-drop-andre-ayew-must-be-respected-ex-black-stars-midfielder/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 16:41:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2408115 Former Ghana midfielder, Emmanuel Agyemang Badu, has weighed in on Otto Addo’s decision to exclude Andre Ayew from the national team squad.

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers’ against Mali and Central African Republic (CAR), the Le Havre attacker, who is the captain of the senior national team was notably missing from the 26-man roster released by Otto Addo, sparking criticism from football enthusiasts.

However, Agyemang-Badu, a former U-20 World Cup victor, stresses the importance of respecting Addo’s authority as head coach.

“Otto Addo explained why Andre Ayew was not in the squad but we don’t if Andre will return to the squad in subsequent games,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM on the Ultimate Sports Show.

“Otto Addo has been given the mandate as the head coach of the Black Stars so his decision to drop Andre Ayew from the squad must be respected.

“Andre Ayew is still the captain of the team but Otto Addo has decided that he will not play these two games and we must respect that because if he fails, the head coach will be sacked so we must believe in the decisions and judgement of Otto Addo,” he added.

Ghana, despite Ayew’s omission, secured hard-fought victories, defeating Mali 2-1 in Bamako and triumphing 4-3 against Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium.

These wins propel the Black Stars to second place in Group I, boasting nine points from four games.

Black Stars’ next qualifying matches are scheduled for March 2025 against Chad and Madagascar.

Andre Ayew’s return lies with the technical team – Ghana coach Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayews-return-lies-with-the-technical-team-ghana-coach-otto-addo/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 12:20:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2408036 Ghana coach, Otto Addo, has stated that the potential return of Andre Ayew to the Black Stars squad will be determined by the technical team.

Andre Ayew was omitted from the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers this month, despite his impressive performance with French Ligue 1 club, Le Havre, where he has scored six goals.

In Andre’s absence, Ghana achieved consecutive victories against Mali and the Central African Republic. Jordan Ayew played a pivotal role in both matches, scoring the decisive goal in Bamako and securing a hat-trick in Kumasi.

After the match against the Central African Republic, Jordan Ayew was questioned by the press about his older brother’s absence. Otto Addo stepped in to respond.

“Let me speak on Jordan’s behalf. It’s his brother,” Addo said. “Of course, he wants him to be by his side, but ultimately, the decision lies with me and the coaching staff.

“As a brother, he would prefer to have him alongside. However, my responsibility is to the national team, to Ghana, and I must make the best decisions for the team. Who knows? Maybe Andre will be included in the future, maybe not. It’s uncertain. Maybe I won’t be here anymore. We can’t predict what will happen,” he added.

Jordan Ayew has scored 28 goals in 104 appearances for Ghana, while Andre Ayew holds the record for the most appearances with 120 caps, netting 24 goals.

Ghana, currently second in Group I with nine points, will face Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

Jordan Ayew wants Andre Ayew in Black Stars camp – Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/jordan-ayew-wants-andre-ayew-in-black-stars-camp-otto-addo/ Wed, 12 Jun 2024 11:13:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2408011 Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, says Jordan Ayew would want his brother Andre next to him when the team.

Andre, who is the skipper for the senior national team was left out of Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for the matchday three and four games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers despite his impressive performances at Le Havre, where Andre scored six goals in 12 starts, he was notably left out.

This decision surprised many fans, given Andre’s strong form. After Ghana’s thrilling 4-3 victory over the Central African Republic on Monday, Jordan was asked about his brother’s exclusion.

However, Otto Addo chose to respond on Jordan’s behalf.

“Let me speak for Jordan. Of course, he wants his brother beside him, but ultimately, the decision lies with me and the coaching staff. As a brother, naturally, he would prefer to have Andre next to him,” Addo explained.

“But I have a responsibility to the national team and to Ghana. I must make decisions that are best for the team. Who knows? Maybe Andre will be included in the future, maybe not. It’s uncertain. I might not even be here to decide. We just don’t know what the future holds.”

Jordan Ayew’s performances have been crucial for Ghana, as he netted the winning goals in their recent matches against Mali and the Central African Republic.

The Black Stars, who now sit 2nd with points in Group I are focused on securing their place in the 2026 World Cup.

Otto Addo and his side will resume their qualifiers with games against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.

2026 WCQ: Andre Ayew deserves to be in Black Stars squad for Mali, CAR games – Boateng https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-andre-ayew-deserves-to-be-in-black-stars-squad-for-mali-car-games-boateng/ Sun, 09 Jun 2024 16:57:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2406811 Former Black Stars midfielder, Derek Boateng believes that Andre Ayew should have been included in Otto Addo’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Despite his impressive form in the French Ligue 1, the Black Stars captain was left out of the 26-man squad for the matches against Mali and the Central African Republic.

In an interview with Joy Sports, Boateng, who played alongside Ayew in the 2010 World Cup said the Le Havre attacker deserved a spot in the squad for these crucial games.

“For me, if you talk about players in good shape at their club level right now, he is one of them,” Boateng said.

“A player like Dede Ayew has to be in the team even if you’re not starting him. His influence in the national team is significant. Some of the players are very close to him and they listen to him a lot. I respect the coach’s decision, but for me, he has to be in the squad,” he added.

The 34-year-old Ayew scored five goals and played a crucial role in helping Le Havre avoid relegation in the French Ligue 1. Ayew is Ghana’s most-capped player, with 120 appearances since his debut in 2007.

The Black Stars are set to face the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on Monday for matchday four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.

They currently sit in third place after a 2-1 victory over Mali in Bamako.

I wouldn’t be happy if I were Andre Ayew but … – Asamoah Gyan https://www.adomonline.com/i-wouldnt-be-happy-if-i-were-andre-ayew-but-asamoah-gyan/ Fri, 31 May 2024 18:42:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2403031 Former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan says he understands the frustration Andre Ayew following his exclusion from the Black Stars squad.

Ayew was left out of Ghana’s 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, as announced by head coach, Otto Addo on Wednesday.

Having had a strong season with Le Havre in the French Ligue 1, the 34-year-old Ayew had expected to be included in the squad for these crucial matches.

Addo acknowledged that Ayew disagreed with his decision, with reports indicating that the veteran player is unhappy about being left out.

Gyan, however, views Ayew’s reaction as ‘normal.’

“If it were me, I wouldn’t be happy, which is a normal reaction, but at the end of the day, the coach has made his decision, so we just have to support it,” Gyan told Joy FM.

“We shouldn’t forget that Andre is already a legend,” he added.

Ghana is set to face Mali in Bamako on June 6 before returning to Kumasi for the home game against the Central African Republic.

2026 WCQ: Asamoah Gyan reacts to Andre Ayew’s Black Stars snub https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-asamoah-gyan-reacts-to-andre-ayews-black-stars-snub/ Fri, 31 May 2024 16:36:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2403011 Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan believes it’s time for Andre Ayew to move on, despite his outstanding performance and contributions to the team.

Ayew has been omitted from Otto Addo’s 26-man squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, scheduled for next month.

In Addo’s first two games since his reappointment, Ayew played against Nigeria and Uganda in March but has been excluded from the upcoming fixtures.

Gyan feels this decision is timely and necessary for progression.

“For me, Andre has done so much for Ghana. He started way back in 2007 and has been consistent in the national team. He is the most capped player,” said Gyan, the country’s all-time top scorer, told Joy FM.

“I think the coach has made his decision. Personally, I played with Andre, and he has done everything for Ghana, but this is a situation where we have to move on. The coach has made his decision” he added.

Ayew had a strong season in France, scoring five goals in 19 appearances for Le Havre, helping them avoid relegation.

Ghana will face Mali in Bamako on June 6 before hosting the Central African Republic on June 10 at the Baba Yara Stadium for the Matchday three and four games, respectively.

I hope Andre Ayew accepts Black Stars snub in good faith – Coach J.E Sarpong https://www.adomonline.com/i-hope-andre-ayew-accepts-black-stars-snub-in-good-faith-coach-j-e-sarpong/ Thu, 30 May 2024 14:13:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2402323 Former Ebusua Dwarfs coach, J.E. Sarpong, expressed hope that Andre Ayew will accept his exclusion from the Black Stars in good faith.

The 34-year-old forward has been left out of Ghana’s squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic, despite his impressive performances in the recently concluded French Ligue 1 season.

Ayew scored five goals in 19 appearances, playing a crucial role in keeping Le Havre in the French top flight.

Speaking to Asempa FM on the Ultimate Sports Show, Sarpong, who also previously coached Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, shared his thoughts on the decision.

“André Ayew has paid his dues, but the manner in which we say goodbye to our players is not pleasant. I’m being skeptical because Ayew is in form. He has found his form again, considering his performance in the just-ended season. Ayew was scoring in the French Ligue, so I thought his form could carry him to the national team.

“If André Ayew is to be retired from the team, it should be after the qualifiers. I don’t understand why we push our captains out like this. It happened to Kwesi Appiah, Asamoah Gyan, and now André. The debate will continue, but I hope Ayew will take it in good faith and move on,” he added.

Ayew holds the record for the most appearances for Ghana with 120 caps and has scored 24 goals for the national team.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars will begin their training today at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Ghana is scheduled to play in Bamako on June 6 before hosting the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on June 10 for Matchday 3 and 4 games, respectively.

The Black Stars, currently fourth in Group I, will aim to get back to winning ways after recording a win and a defeat in their first two matches.
