The organisers also revealed ace filmmaker, director, producer and pioneer Academy Director of the MultiChoice Talent Factory, Femi Odugbemi as head judge of the awards.

In her press conference held in Nigeria today, Dr Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice described the 10th AMVCA as a celebration to mark a decade of brilliance, innovation, and the sheer magic of African storytelling on screen.

“The AMVCA has established itself as the benchmark for excellence in the African film industry. This edition is not just the celebration of excellence in filmmaking, but also a heritage of an award that has improved careers and boosted talent development on the continent”.

Dr. Tejumola further disclosed that the pool of quality entries this year will be a significant task the jury and head judge to review.

“For this edition, we received entries from films and talent across Africa. Shortlisting has begun and we will now move to the judging phases. For this special edition, we are making changes to the award categories. The Best Actor and Best Actress, as well as Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories will now be determined by the jury. We are also delighted to announce ace filmmaker, director and producer, Femi Odugbemi, as the Head Judge for the 10th AMVCA.

“In partnership with our sponsors, Amstel, Pepsi, Promasidor and Martell, we call on Africa to join in this celebration, as we begin with the announcement of final nominees in each category, live across all Africa Magic channels, on March 24, at 8pm. The voting portal will open immediately after the announcement,” Tejumola said.

The 10th AMVCA’s two-day celebration will kick start on the 10th May with the Young Filmmakers and Content Creators event in the morning, followed by the Cultural Day and Opening Night celebration in the evening and the Main Awards Ceremony the night of 11th of May 2024.

Commenting on the task before the award jury, Odugbemi said: “This prestigious award is celebrated for its unwavering dedication to excellence, and the jury remains steadfast in ensuring only the most outstanding works earn a spot on the nomination list. Having served as the head judge in previous editions, I can unequivocally state that evaluating the remarkable submissions by talent across Africa is an extremely challenging task I assure everyone that the final selection will truly represent the best in the field”.

I was targeted, tagged as a local artiste – Gloria Sarfo exposes rot in industry https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-targeted-tagged-as-a-local-artiste-gloria-sarfo-exposes-rot-in-industry/ Fri, 26 May 2023 16:04:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2253692 Actress Gloria Sarfo has shed more light on her intriguing yet dreadful experience in the movie industry.

With a career spanning almost two decades, she said in a interview on TV3, monitored by Adomonline.com, that she has seen the good, bad and mostly the ugly side of the industry.

Pertinent of her struggles is the discrimination and blacklisting she battled with being an actress dominated on the local side.

She found her feet in the Kumawood industry before moving to mainstream Gollywood which has proved to be somewhat a ‘curse’ to her.

Gloria described herself as one of the greatest industry survivors having triumphed from the targeting, sidelining and ‘pull-him-down’ attempts from her colleagues.

She revealed there were times when her own colleague declined to work with her because they felt she was too local and below their level.

Due to her fluency in Twi language, she said her colleagues argued that she would not meet global standards, and her feature in local series Efiewura made it even worse.

“I have a story,; I am one of the greatest industry survivors. Anytime I talk about that I get emotional’. I am very passionate about what I do but I kept being denied roles because of some strange reasons. Even most of my colleagues when I am being casted alongside, they declined to work with me. I know a lot of people but I don’t wanna mention names,” she said while holding back tears.

In a rather sharp contrast, her role in The Perfect Picture – 10 Years Later – a movie she rattled Twi language – won her an Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award.

She appeared in just four roles and two montages, yet she expressed belief grace shown on her.

She was the only Ghanaian to be nominated in 2021 and one of the few to boast of an AMVCA award.

Prior to the event, she told JoyNews’ Doreen Avio that she was grateful that her work was recognised even though she did not have many scenes in that movie.

According to her, the nomination meant the hard work she put in to execute that role was appreciated.

However, because of the outbreak of coronavirus, Gloria Sarfo was unable to travel to Nigeria to receive the award.

I’m not disappointed I didn’t win anything at AMVCA – Yvonne Okoro https://www.adomonline.com/im-not-disappointed-didnt-win-anything-amvca-yvonne-okoro/ Fri, 10 Mar 2017 13:24:40 +0000 http://ghana-news.adomonline.com/new/?p=20221 Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Okoro says she is not disappointed for not winning an award at the Africa Viewer’s Choice awards (AMVCA).

The AMVCA was held last weekend at EKO Hotel & Suites in Lagos, Nigeria. Ghana left empty-handed after failing to win in any of the categories it received nominations in.

The movie ‘Ghana Must Go’, produced by the actress, received nominations in the Best Director category for Frank Rajah and also got nominated for the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Movie/TV Series for Kofi Adjorlolo as well as four other categories but did not win.

Speaking to Joy News’ Doreen Avio, Yvonne blamed her loss on Ghanaians not voting.

“It means people didn’t vote that’s what it means. When you say this, people get angry. They go and watch the thing (award shows) and go like why are Nigerians only winning, why are South Africans winning but it’s a viewer’s choice awards, you’re meant to vote so that the one that you want to win, would win. And you’ll realize that we have that problem.”

She explained further “We talk a lot about supporting, oh yes! Let her go, we’re so proud of you but nobody goes out there to vote if you look at Big Brother and all these shows, the person cannot win if you don’t vote. So you’ll realize that for my last movie ‘Contract’, the ones (awards) I won were all by the jury and not by popular votes so that should tell you that Ghanaians don’t know how to vote and when you don’t win, they would want to ask you why you didn’t or, get angry and say why are Nigerians winning. It’s because they vote for their people. No matter how terrible the movie is, they go out there and vote because they want their country to win.”

The actress, who has featured in both Ghanaian and international movies, urged Ghanaians to vote for their own and not just celebrate nominations.

“What’s most important is that, next time, let’s not just celebrate the person or the fact that she’s been nominated. Yeah being nominated is fantastic but trust me, winning is the best. So next time, let’s go out there and vote for Ghana, vote for your people so that they can win but the fact that we were nominated and at least Ghana represented, I think it’s a beautiful thing but it would have been better if I won.”

When asked to share her thoughts on the reason why her works were the only ones recognised for the awards, she said;

“I don’t know because I didn’t watch any of the movies and don’t know the movies churned out last year or last two years but it’s a very competitive award show.”

The actress further noted that “sometimes, a movie not making it doesn’t mean it’s not good. It’s good, better, best, so it’s like your movie might be good but there are better ones or, you didn’t follow due process so because of that and due to a certain reason, your movie will be disqualified. And these things, they wouldn’t come and tell you that your movie was disqualified but you just won’t make it so in the end, your movie might have been great, but you wouldn’t get to that point.”

To her, she is not disappointed that she did not win anything at this year’s awards.
