2023 CAF WCL: Ampem Darkoa Ladies beaten on penalty shootout by SC Casablanca https://www.adomonline.com/2023-caf-wcl-ampem-darkoa-ladies-beaten-on-penalty-shootout-by-sc-casablanca/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 07:45:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2319711 SC Casablanca is through to the CAF Women’s Champions League, Cote d’Ivoire 2023 finals following a dramatic 3-2 penalty victory over Ampem Darkoa after the two sides played out to an exciting 2-2 draw in San Pedro’s Laurent Pokou stadium on Wednesday evening.

Both making their debut in Africa’s premier women’s football club competition, Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa and SC Casablanca of Morocco have both had an impressive run in Cote d’Ivoire.

Having already made history on debut, it was a place in the final up for the taking for the two sides aiming to put the cherry on top of their impressive debut.

It took just 6 minutes for Comfort Yeboah to open the scoring for Darkoa after the early pressure applied by the Ghanaians resulted in a penalty for Yeboah to slot home.

Minutes later, the defender was back on the scoresheet, this time with an unfortunate own goal that gifted the Moroccans the equalizer in the 28th minute.

Not to be disheartened by the unfortunate incident, Ampem Darkoa continued to push forward and were duly rewarded in the 39th minute after the lively Jennifer Owusuaa regained the lead with a wonder strike from a distance that had the entire stadium in awe.

Returning from the break, SC Casablanca came out a different side in search of the early equalizer. The applied pressure paid dividends for the Moroccan side who were awarded a penalty minutes into the second half for Agueissa Diarra to step up and convert in the 56th minute.

Both sides had equal chance to get the winning goal but were both let down by their finishing when it mattered the most as nothing could separate them in referees’ regulation time as well as extra time.

With the lottery of penalties, it was the Moroccans who emerged 3-2 victors in a dramatic shootout that sees them set up a tie against Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday, while the Ghanaians are set to battle it out for the bronze medal against AS Far.

CAFWCL 2023: Ampem Darkoa Ladies into semis after win over Huracanes FC https://www.adomonline.com/cafwcl-2023-ampem-darkoa-ladies-into-semis-after-win-over-huracanes-fc/ Mon, 13 Nov 2023 07:50:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2317994 Youngster, Tracey Twum scored a brace on Sunday night as Ampem Darkoa Ladies beat Huracanes FC in their third group game at the 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League to seal a semifinal spot.

After one win and one defeat in their first two games, the WAFU B champions reacted well to the loss to AS Mande on Thursday to advance to the next stage of the competition where they will face debutants SC Casablanca.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies took the lead through forward Tracey Twum in the ninth minute of the game. Twum converted brilliantly from a free kick after Jennifer Owusuaa had been brought down close to the penalty box.

The WAFU B champions however were unable to take advantage of their lead to control the tempo of the game as Huracanes regained momentum.

Deborah Brown, coming into the team for her first appearance, denied the Equatorial Guinea side on two occasions to keep her side in the game.

Twum should have scored her second goal of the game after being played through by Linda Owusu Ansah but the winger just shot wide of the post.

The Nana Mma went into the break with just the 1-0 goal from Twum and were fortunate not to have surrendered their lead.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies almost doubled their lead right after the recess but the Huracanes goalkeeper intercepted Twum’s square pass into the path of Maybel Amoyaw.

There was also an opportunity for Owusuaa to score the second after a brilliant run down the left by the goalscorer but the former’s effort went just wide.

Huracanes were close to getting their equaliser in the 60th minute but a long-range strike was tipped onto the crossbar by Brwon in post for Ampem Darkoa.

After a series of Huracanes attacks, the Techiman-based almost doubled the lead but a free kick effort from some yards off the penalty box came off the crossbar with the rebound being cleared away.

There was no denying Twum again as she grabbed her second of the game, scoring from a rebound as the Ghanaians hit the crossbar once again.

The forward raced the quickest to ensure she cushioned the lead for Ampem Darkoa Ladies. It was Owusuaa’s effort once again which the goalkeeper failed to deal with.

Brown was forced into another excellent save to deny the away side on the day in the 84th minute but there was a third for the Ghanaian side with Twum playing through substitute Gnabekan N-Yanimaya for their third.

Huracanes pulled one back almost immediately but it was only a consolation with the game ending 3-1 in favor of Ampem Darkoa Ladies.

Ampem Darkoa will now face fellow debutants SC Casablanca who finished second in Group A in the last four.

CAFWCL: Ampem Darkoa Ladies hammered 3-0 by AS Mande https://www.adomonline.com/cafwcl-ampem-darkoa-ladies-hammered-3-0-by-as-mande/ Fri, 10 Nov 2023 07:49:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2317165 Ampem Darkoa Ladies will have it all to play for in their last game after suffering a humiliating defeat to AS Mande in their second group game at the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League.

The Ghanaian champions were punished for their defensive display throughout the game as the Malians climbed to the top of Group B.

Maimouna Traore and Oumou Kone combined on three occasions to hand Ampem Darkoa Ladies a 3-0 defeat in San Pedro, their first in the competition.

The result also saw AS Mande end their run of four games without a win in the competition since their debut in 2021 while they also kept their first clean sheet in the CAFWCL.

Kone opened the scoring in the 41st minute of the game before scoring her second and third in the 71st and 74th minutes respectively.

Having seen ASFAR Club beat Huracanes earlier on Thursday, Ampem Darkoa Ladies now drop to third position in Group B and would need to beat the Equatorial Guinea side if they are to advance to the next stage of the competition.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies face Hurances on Sunday in Korhogo while ASFAR Club and AS Mande face off in San Pedro.

The Ghanaian side opened their campaign with a 2-1 win over defending champions, ASFAR Club last Monday.

According to the midfielder, her team mates have put behind them the excitement of beating the defending champions in their opening game at the tournament despite the buzz but their ultimate objective is to emerge winners of the competition.

“We were happy we won against ASFAR but that is not the target. We are aiming for the trophy, so we continue to fight,” she explained at a press conference ahead of their game against AS Mande.

Quizzed about the presence of the Ghanaian fans, the former Supreme Ladies playmaker emphasised how the fans added to their confidence in their opening game.

“We were happy to see the Ghanaian fans in the stands. That is why we run to them after the goals and the game. They really boosted our morale, and I will urge them to come again as we face AS Mande tomorrow night” she added.

The Ghanaian and Wafu Zone B champions led by head coach, Joe Nana Adarkwah are making their maiden appearance at the continental competition with the trophy being their topmost priority.

Ampem Darkoa is currently top of Group B and will take on AS Mande later today in the second group game.

Comfort was pivotal and scored one and forced an own goal as Ampem Darkoa picked up all three points.

The two giants clashed in the final of the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League at Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex Friday evening.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies won the top spot in the Northern zone while Hasaacas Ladies snatched the slot from Faith Ladies in the Southern zone.

The first half of the game ended goalless as both sides failed to take their chances. But Hasaacas Ladies took control of the opening minutes of the second half as they piled pressure in search of their opponent.

Doris Boaduwaa latched onto a well-executed corner kick for the opening goal on the hour mark.

Hasaacas Ladies maintained their lead until the 83rd minute when Ampem Darkoa’s Ophelia Serwaa Amponsah took advantage of a mistake from Hasaacas Ladies captain Linda Eshun and fired past goalkeeper Grace Banwa for the equalizer.

The late equalizer sent the game into extra time. The winner was later decided on penalty shootouts after both sides failed to score in either half of extra time.

Serwaa Amponsah proved to be the hero for Ampem Darkoa, scoring a crucial penalty after Success Ameyaa missed Hasaacas Ladies’ third kick.

That proved to be the decisive moment, as Ampem Darkoa emerged champions for the second time on the spin.

Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League: Ampem Darkoa face Hasaacas Ladies in third final https://www.adomonline.com/malta-guinness-womens-premier-league-ampem-darkoa-face-hasaacas-ladies-in-third-final/ Fri, 12 May 2023 11:10:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2248476 You don’t often see two teams make a league in Ghana their own in recent times as both Hasaacas Ladies and Ampem Darkoa Ladies have done in the Malta Guinness Ghana Women’s Premier League.

On Friday, May 12, it will be the third consecutive time the pair are meeting in the final playoff of Ghana’s women’s top-flight league after meeting in 2021 and 2022 respectively. During the past meetings at this stage, there has been a win each for the two clubs.

In 2021, the Hasmal Ladies sealed victory with a 4-0 thumping of their opponents at the Accra Sports Stadium and went ahead to represent Ghana at the maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League, where they finished second, losing to Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.

A year later, Ampem Darkoa played for revenge, and while they didn’t get the same scoreline, they earned bragging rights after winning 5-3 on penalties to become champions. Their route to playing in the CAF Champions League was, however, cut short as they failed to win the Wafu Zone B qualification.

Another season and we are at the same spot again; Ampem Darkoa up against Hasaacas Ladies for the coveted trophy.

Malta Guinness Women's Premier League: Ampem Darkoa face Hasaacas Ladies in third final

It is worth knowing that it wasn’t an easy pass for both teams en route to reaching the final. They both needed wins on the final day of the zonal league to secure a place in the last two.

Though Hasaacas Ladies were better in the Southern Zone, they almost lost out to Faith Ladies, who were winners of the 2022 Women’s Super Cup, a curtain-raiser to a new season.

What do the statistics say?

In their zonal games, the Sekondi-based club won 12 out of the 18 games they played, losing three and drawing the other three. While scored a whopping 38 goals, they only conceded 13 with their top scorer, Doris Boaduwaa scoring nine of those 38 goals.

Ampem Darkoa, on the other hand, managed nine wins and four draws, losing five games out of 18. They were superior in terms of goals as they netted 46 times while conceding 21. Mary Amponsah was 16 times on the scoresheet for the club, just one shy of the league’s top scorer, Princess Owusu.

All-time meetings

In all competitions, this will be the fifth final meeting in the last three years and the sixth in all competitions in that same time between these two with Hasaacas Ladies being the superior side. They have three wins including a win in the Women’s FA Cup final and beating them in the semi-finals of the 2021 Women’s Super Cup in addition to the league final win in 2021.

Ampem Darkoa Ladies have two wins from last season, after doing the double over the Hasmal Ladies in Accra and Kumasi respectively.

The two coaches spoke to the media on Thursday ahead of what promises to be an intriguing encounter at the Dr Kwame Kyei Sports Complex in Kumasi with kickoff set for 16:00 GMT.

“We’ll console ourselves with the trophy tomorrow, we wanted a double and it didn’t happen,” Yusif Basigi said.

Joe Nana Adarkwa was also confident of victory for his side at the end of the game.

So, the question: who wins the 2022/23 Malta Guinness Ghana Women’s Premier League?

The two clubs took different paths in the two last four matches to reach the final to be played at the Yamoussoukro Stadium in Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday.

While the 10-woman Ghanaians needed the shoot-out to be able to advance, the Nigerians hammered Espoir Ladies of Benin 6-0 in Wednesday’s second game to clinch their place.

Bayelsa Queens completely decimated the Benin side with a rampage in the second half to set up a repeat of their group stage clash with the Ghanaians that ended in a draw.

Chinyere Igbomalu, who scored a brace in the match, grabbed the only goal in the first half before the Beyalsa turned up the style after the break to make any thoughts of a comeback impossible.

Kafayat Bashiru made it 2-0 soon after the recess before Glory Edet and Etim Edidiong found the back of the net for the Nigerians to take the commanding lead.

Further goals by Igbomalu and Mary Anjor sealed the emphatic victory to line up their final clash with the Ghanaians at the same venue.

Ampem Darkoa eliminated home side Africa Sports 6-5 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time, leading to the shoot-out.

IMG_0115

The semi-final lived up to the expectations of being a tight encounter as it kept the spectators in suspense until the end of the match, sparking wild Ghanaian jubilation.

However, it was the Abidjan-based club that opened the scoring in under one minute through Adjoua Edwige Niamien which led to intense hope for the home fans.

The game remained balanced but came alive at the hour mark when Ampem Darkoa restored parity thanks to a strike by Gladys Amfobea.

The intensity of the game increased and the match became more aggressive leading to several strong tackles that left the Ghanaians stunned.

Ophelia Amponsah was shown a red card in the 66th minute for racking up two yellow cards in that match and Africa Sports could not make their numerical advantage count.

The two teams withstood the pressure until the end of regulation time and extra-time decided between the Ivorian and Ghanaian champions.

It took the fateful ordeal of penalties to see Ampem Darkoa qualify for the final.

Goalkeeper Safiatu Salifu managed to stop defender Linda Gauze’s shot resulting in the victory.

Ampem Darkoa will now face the feared Nigerian side in the final scheduled for Saturday at 1800 GMT.

Joe Nana Adarkwa’s side proved too strong from the blast of the whistle in search for an early goal but Hasaacas Ladies put up a slod resilience in defense.

A poor tackle in the 17th minute resulted in a penalty which was slotted home by Comfort Yeboah to give the League Champions a 1-0 lead.

The Techiman side kept their composure until the halftime whistle as they went into the break with a 1-0 advantage.

Hasaacas Ladies returned from the break to nullify the score line but their efforts were fruitless with Ampem Darkoa Ladies keeping their backline neat. The holders, however, had the breakthrough in the 95th minute but Veronica Appiah’s kick was flagged offside.

A fourth night ago, Ampem Darkoa Ladies inflicted a 5:4 defeat on Hasaacas Ladies after a 1-1 scoreline in regulation time to win the Women’s, Premier League.

This victory means Ampem Darkoa Ladies are the second female side to win two trophies in a single season in the history of Ghana football.
