Delivering a solidarity message during the investiture of the new GIBA Executive Council, Mr. Dwumfuor said he has no doubt in Mr. Awudu’s ability to steer the affairs of the association effectively.

He explained that the competence of the new GIBA President cannot be underestimated, given his extensive experience and contributions to Ghana’s media space over the years.

The GJA President further called for renewed partnership and cooperation among media institutions to strengthen the industry and promote professionalism.

Mr. Dwumfuor also recounted the cordial relationship between the GJA and the outgoing GIBA leadership, urging the new executives to build on that legacy.

He charged the new GIBA President to play an active role in the fight against impunity and attacks on journalists in the country.

According to him, the GJA is in the process of filing a case against the Government of Ghana at the ECOWAS Court of Justice over the unresolved murder of journalist Ahmed Suale.

On his part, the President of the Private Newspaper and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), David Tamakloe, urged the new GIBA executives to avoid unhealthy competition and rather work together to promote a better media environment that safeguards the welfare of journalists and media professionals.

2024 Polls: The interests of journalists will not be compromised – GJA President https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-the-interests-of-journalists-will-not-be-compromised-gja-president/ Fri, 29 Nov 2024 10:57:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2477239 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfuor, has pledged to safeguard journalists’ access to cover the December 7 elections amidst concerns over restrictions outlined by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The EC had issued a memo limiting media access at constituency collation centres to eight organizations, sparking public outcry and calls for a review of the directive.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Dwumfuor stressed that journalists play a crucial role in ensuring transparency in elections, noting that any restrictions could exacerbate existing trust issues with the EC.

“Journalists are the eyes and ears of Ghanaians. Restricting their access distorts the flow of information and can lead to misinformation. We’ve engaged the EC alongside stakeholders like GIBA to resolve this matter,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfuor assured journalists that the GJA is pushing for a comprehensive proposal that allows general polling station accreditation to extend to constituency collation centres.

He also revealed ongoing discussions with the EC to refine the accreditation process, ensuring no journalist is left out.

“We will present our proposals to the EC today and will keep the public informed about further developments. Our priority is to ensure that the interests of journalists are not compromised,” he assured.

The GJA has called on journalists to remain patient as it works to secure unfettered access for comprehensive election coverage.
