According to him, President Akufo-Addo has demonstrated that he is not a good leader but an authoritarian.

In his view, a country like Ghana does not deserve such a person as its president.

Joining hundreds of Ghanaians to demonstrate against the current economic crisis the country is facing on Saturday, November 5, Mr Odike said the entire government lacks the know-how to address the problems.

This, he says makes President Akufo-Addo unfit to lead the country.

“I have been a number one advocate for Nana Addo to step aside because he doesn’t respect Ghanaians. Nana Addo thinks he is doing Ghanaians a favour as a president and he does not respect the oath he swore to do good and everything possible to transform this country.

“In the midst of Covid-19, Nana Addo exhibited profligate lifestyle hiring and bathing in the sky while Ghanaians suffered. He is there only to apportion blame.

“He doesn’t have any solution to the plight of the ordinary Ghanaians. He and his cronies do not want to do anything but milking this country to the detriment of the ordinary Ghanaian.

“Akufo-Addo is not a leader. He is an authoritarian and we cannot allow him to continue as president of this nation,” the outspoken politician said in an interview with JoyNews.

The demonstrators led by private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu are demanding the resignation of President Akufo-Addo over Ghana’s current economic woes.

Some civil society organisations including FixTheCountry, Arise Ghana, Economic Fighters League and other activists joined the demonstrators, saying the President and his government have not done enough to alleviate the plight of citizens in the struggling economy.

Mr Kpebu, in an earlier media interview, said the wanton corruption and mismanagement of the economy give a clear indication that Ghanaians can no longer wait until the end of Mr Akufo-Addo’s four-year term.

He said after the protest, the president together with his vice ought to leave office in order to pave way for the constitutional provision for his replacement to be set in motion.

“We are dying; citizens are dying; citizens can’t afford food; citizens are starving all because of misgovernance by President Akufo-Addo. It never happened that you have a president in office and every time that the country borrows, the president’s family becomes richer; how?”

“This can’t continue. We can’t borrow all the time and have Databank becoming richer all the time. Citizens have a duty as stated in Article 41 [of the Constitution] to ask the president to resign and this is not the first time that a president of Ghana is going to resign,” Mr Kpebu said.

The protesters converged at the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle as early as 7:00 am.

The demo, led by private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, is to demonstrate against the worsening economic hardship being experienced.

The disgruntled citizens are displaying several placards some of which read, Sika Memp3 mismanagement, protect journalists, stop galamsey from the Flagstaff house, resign or be impeached, enough is enough, boo the president even the villagers and witches say Nana must go among others.

Mr Kpebu’s action is believed to be a replication of the massive demonstration Akufo-Addo led in 1995 during a time of hardship and oppression under late former President Jerry Rawlings’ administration.

The action, according to Mr Kpebu, is to impress upon the President to resign because he has shown that he cannot govern the country.

Clad in red and black outfits, they composed several songs calling on President Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to resign.

Mr Kpebu, speaking in an interview, was optimistic the protest will yield results and urged more Ghanaians to join his push for the resignation of the President and Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta for mismanaging Ghana’s economy.

Akufo-Addo must resign; he has lost ‘galamsey’ fight – Odike https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-must-resign-he-has-lost-galamsey-fight-odike/ Tue, 11 Oct 2022 12:08:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2170436 Founder and Leader of United Progressive Party, Akwasi Addai ‘Odike’, has called for the resignation of President Akufo-Addo for his minimal action taken against ‘galamsey’ activities in the country.

Mr Addai noted that five years after President Akufo-Addo promised Ghanaians to put an end to ‘galamsey’ activities, “the situation is becoming dire by the day and ‘galamsey’ has fought him (President Akufo-Addo).”

This, he said sends a signal that the President must step down from office.

“He must leave office for somebody who can do the job. He has failed the battle against galamsey, it is clear. He has lost it. He put his presidency on the line and if he is honest to the people and has conscience to protect, he must resign honourably,” he said on The Pulse, Monday.

He further accused the President of being intolerant to accept divergent views from experts and other political parties to deal with the menace.

“Nana Addo has not extended invitation to anybody. He claims that he can solve it that is why he put his presidency on the line. Had it been that he has extended invitation to all of us (stakeholders, experts and technocrats) to come and join… I was expecting that in the Kumasi forum, there should have been experts that can bring on board divergent ideas to deal with the matter but he brought the Chiefs and the government that we are blaming that they are part of it together. How can we resolve this issue?

“Nana Addo does not want all-inclusive governance. Since he assumed office none of his policies has he invited any political leader even when we are bringing alternatives he thinks that we are distractors to him,” Mr said.

He entreated President Akufo-Addo to issue an Executive Instrument (E.I) to ban surface mining in the country.

This, Mr Odike explained, is because both legal and illegal miners have all ‘messed up.’

Therefore, imposing an E. I on mining would help to reduce illegal mining activities.

“If I were the President, I would have used the Executive Instrument to put a temporary ban on the illegal activities, because at this point we don’t know who is doing legal or illegal mining …  for now, the President has to come out with E. I to put a ban on every form of surface mining,” he said.
