He reassured them that Akua Donkor’s passing does not signify the collapse of the party but a moment to rally together in her memory.

As Election Day approaches, he urged their supporters to vote for Akua Donkor, even if their ballots are deemed invalid, as a tribute to her dedication and vision for Ghana.

Reprint presidential ballot without Akua Donkor’s image – Kofi Akpaloo https://www.adomonline.com/reprint-presidential-ballot-without-akua-donkors-image-kofi-akpaloo/ Wed, 13 Nov 2024 15:30:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2471532 The flagbearer of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to reprint the presidential ballot papers for the 2024 elections.

He cited concerns over the inclusion of the late Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) candidate, Akua Donkor.

Mr. Akpaloo argues that featuring Akua Donkor’s image on the ballot could influence the election’s outcome.

He suggests that if the GFP had nominated a new candidate, the EC would have reprinted the ballots to reflect the update.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, November 13, Mr. Akpaloo stressed that reprinting the ballots would protect the election’s integrity and prevent confusion among voters.

“Having Akua Donkor’s image on the ballot will cause issues nationwide,” he said.

“People might vote for her despite her passing. How will these votes be counted? Are we going to disregard votes cast for her, or will they factor into the percentages?”

“We don’t want a situation where a candidate disputes the results based on these percentages. We urge the EC to reprint the ballots without Akua Donkor’s image to avoid this potential conflict,” he added.

2024 Election: Akua Donkor’s wish to her party before her death [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/2024-election-akua-donkors-wish-to-her-party-before-her-death-listen/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 10:07:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2468964 The General Secretary of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), George Afful, has denied claims that the party is divided over whether or not to continue participating in the 2024 presidential election following the death of their founder, Akua Donkor.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Afful clarified that even before her passing, Akua Donkor had expressed her wish that, if she were no longer around, her vice-presidential candidate should replace her.

“It is important that we honour Madam Donkor’s legacy,” Mr. Afful said. “She spent a lot of money on this campaign, and we must fulfill her wishes. We thank God that she made this wish before passing, and it is important that we respect it.”

Mr. Afful stressed that the entire party, including its rank and file, was aware of Madam Donkor’s wishes.

He added, “If the woman who founded our party said that her running mate should replace her if she’s not around, who are we to change that wish? We must fulfill the promise she made before dying.”

The dispute arises over a letter from Richard Botchway, the party’s National Organiser, suggesting that GFP was withdrawing from the election.

However, Mr. Afful dismissed this claim, stating, “We don’t know anyone named Richard Botchway. We have not withdrawn from the race, as has been speculated. That letter should be disregarded.”

The General Secretary further pointed out that GFP does not currently have a Chairman or National Organiser, expressing confusion over the circulation of the letter.

“I believe the devil has used him,” Mr. Afful remarked. “Our party is not divided; we are united in our efforts. Some people just want to take advantage of Akua Donkor’s passing, but God will not allow any division.”

Regarding the vice-presidential candidate, Roman Fada, Mr. Afful reiterated that “Roman Fada” is the name used in the General Secretary’s letter to the Electoral Commission, despite discrepancies in other correspondence referring to him as Philip Kwabena Agyemang.

Following Akua Donkor’s sudden death last week, GFP faces internal disagreements over whether the party should continue its participation in the upcoming December 7 presidential election.

The confusion is compounded by discrepancies in the naming of the vice-presidential candidate.

Both letters from the General Secretary and National Organiser were received by the Electoral Commission on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

Akua Donkor’s party divided over participation in 2024 Election https://www.adomonline.com/akua-donkors-party-divided-over-participation-in-2024-election/ Wed, 06 Nov 2024 07:53:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2468937

The leadership of Akua Donkor’s Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is divided over whether the party should continue to participate in the 2024 presidential election after the death of their founder last week, just a few weeks before the December 7 elections.

While the General Secretary of the GFP, George Afful, in a letter dated Monday, November 4, 2024, addressed to the Electoral Commissioner, announced that the party had nominated the vice presidential candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, commonly known as ‘Roman Fada’, to replace the late Akua Donkor as the presidential candidate, the National Organiser, Richard Botchway, in another letter dated Tuesday, November 5, 2024, also addressed to the EC, announced that the party was withdrawing from the race.

Roman Fada, in some correspondence from the GFP, has been referred to as Philip Kwabena Agyemang, but the GFP General Secretary’s letter to the EC introduced him as Philip Appiah Kubi.

Both letters were received by the Electoral Commission on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

However, Graphic Online has reported that the letter from the General Secretary is the one the commission is working with.

The commission has since received the nomination forms from ‘Roman Fada’ as the presidential candidate replacement for Akua Donkor.

Roman Fada has also nominated one Vida Eshun as his running mate.

Sources at the Electoral Commission have told Graphic Online that the commission is reviewing the nomination forms and is expected to provide feedback to the party within 24 hours, or by Thursday, November 7, on whether or not the presidential candidate and the running mate meet the necessary qualifications.

Following the General Secretary’s letter, Roman Fada filed his nomination forms at exactly 1:07 p.m. on Tuesday, which included Vida Eshun as his running mate. The Deputy Chairman at the EC in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, received the forms.

GFP National Organiser’s Letter

In his letter dated November 5, the National Organiser of the GFP, Richard Botchway, indicated that the party was formally withdrawing from the December 7 presidential election due to the death of their founder and presidential candidate, Akua Donkor.

He said the intention was to honour the commitment and sacrifices of Madam Donkor, who was the driving force and sole candidate for the party.

He indicated that it was a decision taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the GFP in consultation with the family of Akua Donkor.

“This decision, irrespective of how difficult it may be, has been reached to posthumously honour the commitment and sacrifices made by our late founder and presidential candidate,” the letter stated.

He said the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the GFP, in arriving at that decision, also regrets any disruption the withdrawal may create for the Electoral Commission’s preparations.

However, they affirmed the party’s readiness to participate in future elections organized by the commission.

Attached below is a copy of the letter from the General Secretary of the GFP, introducing Philip Appiah Kubi as the replacement for Akua Donkor.

The Electoral Commission (EC) last week suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers for Election 2024 following the sudden death of Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate of the GFP.

The EC gave the GFP 10 days to nominate a new presidential candidate.

The EC quoted Article 50(4) of the 1992 Constitution to support the move of giving the GFP 10 days. It states: “Where, at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”

The Commission explained that while the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a presidential candidate, Article 50(4) of the 1992 Constitution provides as follows: “Where, at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”

Madam Akua Donkor founded the GFP in 2011 and got it registered in 2012.

This was after she had served as an Assembly Member at Hemang in the Kwabre East District.

From Assembly Member, she moved to the constituency level and filed to contest as a Member of Parliament for Kwabre East in the Ashanti Region. She competed with the late Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, a former Judicial Secretary and former Ashanti Regional Minister, who beat Akua Donkor and served two terms on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

After two failed attempts in the parliamentary elections in 2004 and 2008, and determined to advance her political career, she moved up into the presidential race and formed the GFP in 2011.

She filed to contest the 2024 presidential election on the ticket of the GFP and had been attending all IPAC meetings and political party events herself.

Prior to Madam Donkor’s demise, Roman Fada was her running mate.

The decision to select Roman Fada came after extensive consultations within the party’s leadership to ensure a smooth transition.

A statement signed by the General Secretary of the GFP, George Afful, noted that Mr. Kubi’s nomination would be filed with the EC in due time.

The candidate had earlier expressed his willingness to step in as the flagbearer, should the law permit him.

Madam Donkor passed away at the Ridge Hospital on Monday, October 28, 2024.

We’ve settled on Akua Donkor’s replacement – GFP https://www.adomonline.com/weve-settled-on-akua-donkors-replacement-gfp/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 16:52:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2467319 The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has selected a new presidential candidate for the upcoming December 7 elections, following the recent passing of their founder and former presidential candidate, Akua Donkor, on October 29.

According to party officials, the new candidate will be publicly introduced in the coming days, underscoring the GFP’s dedication to the election and its vision for Ghana despite the loss of its founding leader.

In a press conference held on Friday, November 1, in the Ashanti Region, GFP leaders addressed members and supporters, expressing unity and determination to carry forward Akua Donkor’s legacy.

Nsawam-Adoagyiri parliamentary candidate Patrick Tetteh confirmed that the party’s executive council has reached a consensus on both the presidential candidate and a running mate, chosen to uphold the GFP’s values and commitment to the Ghanaian people.

Mr. Tetteh emphasized the importance of this decision, noting that the new leadership reflects a shared commitment to honoring Akua Donkor’s contributions and continuing the party’s mission in her memory.

“The executives and leadership of the Ghana Freedom Party have agreed on the next presidential candidate and running mate, who will be presented to the Electoral Commission and the public within the Commission’s required timeframe, enabling the democratic process to proceed,” he stated.

Implications of the Death of Akua Donkor, GFP Presidential Candidate – A Legal Perspective https://www.adomonline.com/implications-of-the-death-of-akua-donkor-gfp-presidential-candidate-a-legal-perspective/ Fri, 01 Nov 2024 12:13:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2467255 The untimely demise of Akua Donkor, founder and presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), has raised critical questions as the 2024 presidential election approaches.

At present, neither the Constitution nor any other enactment provides guidance on this unprecedented situation. Article 51 of the Constitution empowers the Electoral Commission to issue directives through constitutional instruments for such events. However, the existing Constitutional Instrument, C.I. 127, lacks provisions to address this scenario, underscoring a lack of foresight for eventualities of this nature.

It may be argued that Article 50(4) offers a solution, but this provision applies primarily to parliamentary and other public elections, rather than presidential ones. Article 60(2) specifies that a vice-presidential candidate must be designated by the presidential candidate prior to the election whereas 60 (4) provides that “A candidate shall be deemed to be duly elected as Vice-President if the candidate who designated him as candidate for election to the office of Vice-President has been duly elected as President in accordance with the provisions of article 63 of this Constitution.” This arrangement implies a two-candidate ticket in presidential elections, distinct from the single-candidate provision outlined in Article 50(4). In the event of one candidate’s absence, the other would assume their role.

To seek a resolution, we might draw inspiration from the same Article 50(4), which states: “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations; and where the death occurs at any time within twenty-five days before the election, the election in that constituency or unit shall be postponed for twenty-one days.”

This provision is echoed in section 11(4) of the Representation of the People Law, PNDCL 284, and reinforced in the Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I. 127).
Regulation 13(4) affirms: “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations.”
Regulation 13 pertains to instances where the nomination period has concluded, yet a candidate passes away shortly before the election.

Regulation 17, on the other hand, addresses situations in which a candidate dies on the eve of the election, with proof of death presented to the returning officer before polling commences.

Under Regulation 17 of C.I. 127, titled “Death of a Candidate”:

(2): Upon notification, the Commission must adjourn the poll, granting the candidate’s party ten days to nominate a replacement.

(3): If the deceased candidate was an independent, no replacement is allowed, and the election proceeds as scheduled.

(4): If a political party nominates a new candidate, the Commission shall adjourn elections in the constituency of the deceased candidate for twenty-one days from the date of the new nomination.
Drawing on these provisions, several approaches could be considered to address the present situation, with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness.

Three potential scenarios are as follows:

  1. Party’s Discretion: Since its two person ticket, the running mate should automatically become the presidential candidate and in consultation with the political partv, a new running mate is chosen. Some will also say it is the sole prerogative of the party to decide on a new presidential and running mate.
  2. Nomination and Replacement: Should the running mate become the new presidential candidate or should the party nominate a new candidate, the party symbol and colour will remain and the picture of the deceased candidate could be crossed out. We may not have to spend new money to print new ballot papers. Except, this will require EC reaching an agreement with the party and/ or the new candidate may insist he or she be put on the ballot paper. This will require re printing but will not affect the positions of the parties from number 1 to 13.
  3. No Nomination: If the party chooses not to nominate a replacement, a vacancy may arise, posing implications for the Electoral Commission and other parties. In one scenario, the ballot may need reprinting with a revised candidates list . This will mean fresh balloting to determine who is number 1, 2, 3 up to 12. Alternatively, to minimise costs, existing ballot papers could remain unchanged, with the deceased candidate’s position cancelled, thereby avoiding unnecessary expense and potential conflict.

If I die, my running mate will take over – Akua Donkor video surfaces https://www.adomonline.com/if-i-die-my-running-mate-will-take-over-akua-donkor-video-surfaces/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 16:09:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2466180 Hours after the demise of Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), videos of interviews she had conducted while alive have surfaced online.

One such video features an interview she had with Zionfelix TV, where she detailed her health status. When the interviewer asked if she could handle the rigors of the presidency given her age and health condition, she responded in the affirmative.

She also mentioned that in the unlikely event of her passing, there was someone to act in her stead.

“I have been experiencing health challenges for the past 10 years, but I am still alive. Even if I die today, my running mate will take over from me,” she said in the interview published by Zionfelix TV on October 12, 2024.

Akua Donkor passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the age of 72.

Akua Donkor, whose political career began as an Assemblywoman for Hemang in the Ashanti Region, was widely known for tickling the humor buds of people with her speeches and commentaries.

Throughout her political journey, she distinguished herself by running for the presidency multiple times, demonstrating remarkable resilience despite financial challenges.

Although her first attempt in 2012 as an independent candidate and a subsequent run in 2016 proved unsuccessful, she met the eligibility requirements of the Electoral Commission and was featured in the 2020 election.

With just 39 days to the 2024 election, Akua Donkor had been promising policies such as free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services for the clearance of goods, free education, and improved remuneration for farmers.

A recent highlight of her 2024 presidential campaign was when she appointed Roman Fada, the manager of highlife musician Daddy Lumba and a broadcaster at Atinka FM, as her running mate.

In the meantime, Roman Fada stated in an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz FM that no decision has been made regarding the party’s participation in the 2024 general election following Akua Donkor’s demise.

Check out Akua Donkor’s English name and why she stopped using it https://www.adomonline.com/__trashed-112/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 09:23:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465849 The late founder of the Ghana Freedom Party(GFP), Akua Donkor has become a household name and unique personality in Ghanaian politics.

Despite her lack of formal education, Akua Donkor was admired by many for her ability and determination to defy all odds.

However, one detail that many people may not know is her English name, “Veronica.”

Madam Donkor revealed this in an interview she granted to Kofi TV in 2016, which has resurfaced following her demise on Monday, October 28, 2024.

As an ardent promoter of the Twi language and a proud Ghanaian, Akua Donkor stated that she dropped “Veronica” to better identify with and resonate with her roots.

Born Veronica Asante Donkor, she explained that “Asante” was her father’s surname.

However, she chose to adopt “Akua,” the name for a female born on Wednesday, along with “Donkor,” which she inherited from her parents and was proud to carry.

“I’m Veronica, I was the one who wiped the face of Jesus. Likewise, He also wipes away all my tears and sorrow. People must be able to understand your name because there are people who don’t even know the meaning of the English names they have,” she said.

Akua Donkor until her demise at the Ridge Hospital was the presidential candidate of GFP for the December 7, 2024, presidential election.

As number three on the ballot paper, she explained it symbolises the trinity.

She first reported at the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region with respiratory issues.

Ghana Freedom Party opens book of condolence for Akua Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-freedom-party-opens-book-of-condolence-for-akua-donkor/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 08:53:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465949 The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) will open a book of condolence for its late presidential candidate, Akua Donkor, at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) Thursday October 31, 2024.

Madam Donkor, who was third on the presidential ballot for the upcoming presidential elections on December 7, 2024, passed on at the Ridge Hospital last Monday.

A strong advocate for farmers and women, Madam Donkor was referred to the Ridge Hospital last Monday from the Nsawam Government Hospital.

The General Secretary of the party, George Afful, told the Daily Graphic that the party officials would be meeting to discuss the way forward.

He said the electorate and Ghanaians would be informed on the next line of action.

The running mate of Madam Donkor, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, aka Roman Fada, said he had been devastated by her death.

Political career

Madam Donkor founded the GFP in 2011 and got it registered in 2012.

This was after she attempted an election as an Assembly member a number of times and failed at her native Kwabre in the Ashanti Region.

In 2004, she filed to contest as a Member of Parliament (MP) at Kwabre East in the Ashanti Region and competed with the late Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, a former Judicial Secretary and former Ashanti Regional Minister.

After two unsuccessful elections in 2004 and 2008 as an MP, and determined to move her political career a notch higher, she moved up into the presidential race.

Madam Donkor first made a claim to the presidency in 2012 as an independent presidential candidate, demonstrating her determination to win the elections.

She was, however, disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC) for not meeting the requirements.

Her party was again disqualified from contesting the 2016 elections.

Madam Donkor was among three women presidential candidates who were cleared to contest the 2020 presidential elections.

Free education

After she was cleared by the EC to contest the 2024 elections, Madam Donkor promised to make education from primary to secondary level free if elected.

She promised to establish a free zone at the port of Tema to attract more businesses.

She also advocated that Ghana refined its resources, especially oil, saying that buying refined oil from other countries when the country is an oil producer was absurd.

In the lead-up to the 2024 general election, she was actively preparing for her campaign with just 39 days remaining, promising policies that included free vehicles for journalists, duty-free port services for the clearance of goods, free education, and improved remuneration for farmers.

Promoter of Twi language

Despite lacking formal education, Madam  Donkor boldly stepped into the challenging political arena, a move widely admired by many Ghanaians.

Madam  Donkor was an ardent promoter of the Twi language. In an interview she previously granted, she explained that although she had an English name — Veronica, she decided to drop it in order to sound more Ghanaian.

This name change, she explained, was a way to resonate more deeply with her roots, and it has become widely recognised and celebrated across Ghana.

EC suspends printing of ballot papers over Akua Donkor’s death https://www.adomonline.com/ec-suspends-printing-of-ballot-papers-over-akua-donkors-death/ Wed, 30 Oct 2024 07:56:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465938

The Electoral Commission (EC) has suspended the printing of ballot papers for the 2024 presidential election following the death of Akua Donkor, the candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).

According to the EC, the suspension is to allow the party 10 days to nominate a new presidential candidate.

The EC stated that the decision aligns with Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution, which specifies, “Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations,” as noted in portions of a statement issued by the EC.

A statement signed by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at the EC, added, “While the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a Presidential Candidate, Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution provides as follows: ‘Where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of ten days shall be allowed for nominations.'”

In a related development, Madam Donkor’s vice-presidential candidate, Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, has expressed his readiness to replace her.

Akua Donkor, aged 72, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital after a brief illness.

What you probably didn’t know about Akua Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/what-you-probably-didnt-know-about-akua-donkor/ Tue, 29 Oct 2024 07:54:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2465529 Akua Donkor became a prominent figure in the political landscape and was the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).

She died on Monday, October 28, 2024, at the Ridge Hospital after a brief illness.

Aside from her outspoken nature, hilarious and unique approach to politics, here are five other things you probably didn’t know about her.

A farmer cum politician

Born in February 1952 at Afigya Kwabre in the Ashanti region, Akua Donkor prior to her presence in the political space was a cocoa farmer and trader.

Her political aspirations begun with her election as the Assemblywoman for Heman, paving way for her presidential ambition.

In 2012, she made her first presidential attempt with her decision to run as an independent candidate but was disqualified.

She later founded GFP with the aim of being the voice for the poor and marginalised in society.

She was once again disqualified in 2016 after her party headquarters in Kabu, located in the Eastern Region was guttered by fire in early January.

In 2024, Akua Donkor sailed through vetting and was listed as the third candidate on the ballot for the presidential race.

Championing women right

Madam Donkor positioned herself as an advocate in the political space, pushing for the rights of the youth, farmers and particularly women.

She had promised to extend the three months maternity leave for women to a year if she ever had the chance to be Ghana’s president.

This she believed will afford nursing mothers adequate time to take care of themselves before resuming their work.

Madam Donkor was also worried about the challenges female entrepreneurs encounter in accessing loans for their businesses and announced plans to provide soft loans.

Passionate about agriculture

As a farmer, she had on a number of occasions raised concerns on the lack of adequate support for farmers, including funding and other agricultural inputs.

She therefore expressed commitment to provide arable farmlands to support agricultural development in Ghana.

Anti-LGBTQ activities

Just like many Ghanaians, Akua Donkor was outspoken on the anti-LGBTQI+ activities and joined the call for an immediate passage of the bill.

She shared the view that the practice frowns on the values, norms and traditions of the Ghanaian society and God, hence must not be encouraged.

Her passing marks the end of an era, closing a unique chapter in Ghana’s political history.

The GFP General Secretary, George Afful, said he received a call on Monday about Madam Donkor’s ill health but thought it was stress.

He was however silent on the exact sickness the deceased complained of.

“I travelled to Nsuta and Mampong for party activities on Friday and she even asked me not to stay long so I can return to monitor the printing of the ballot. So I came back on Monday afternoon,” he said.

She was rushed to Ridge Hospital and around 9 pm, Mr Afful disclosed Akua Donkor’s daughter, Mary called again to announce her death.

“We have a lot of inside jokes and songs we sing. So I rushed to the hospital with the hope that I could sing for her but all my attempts proved futile because she was not responsive. It was a difficult time for the family,” he said on Adom FM.

Mr Afful noted the family in Accra will return to Ridge Hospital on Tuesday morning with other relatives expected to come from Kumasi.

He also revealed Akua Donkor is survived by three children and acknowledged her death is indeed a big blow to Ghana.

She was particularly not happy with former President John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), whom she said was continually making what she said was derogatory remarks about her.

She has therefore threatened to sue Mr Mahama if such remarks continue.

Speaking at the IPAC meeting, she alleged that Mr Mahama continually makes remarks concerning her candidacy.

“I founded the party [GFP] in 2011 and got it registered in 2012. I formed it myself, I did not take members from any other party.

“Anytime he [Mahama] speaks, he speaks against me. I followed the instructions of the EC and qualified to contest so I deserve to be here,” she lamented.

‘President Akua Donkor’ – Occasional Kwatriot Kwesi Yankah writes https://www.adomonline.com/president-akua-donkor-occasional-kwatriot-kwesi-yankah-writes/ Mon, 07 Oct 2024 16:00:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2457677 It’s over now–a much-awaited face-to-face encounter between the Electoral Commission and a pack of political wisemen called IPAC, representing various political parties plus concert parties.

This event happening within a tense Ghana nervously inching towards December, the meeting was expected to further raise tempers high enough to call the Fire Service.

But the four-hour marathon ended with sighs of relief countrywide, and the complaining political party going home with downcast eyes, empty-handed, and unsure whether to smile or cry.

Even though ‘Kurom aye hu,’ we all enjoyed a sound sleep including the creature called forensic audit, that was also put to bed.

An active player in the anticipated show-down was iconic Madam Akua Donkor, whose presence at the forum had earlier drawn giggles and whispers across the nation.

Had Akua Donkor lost her way? Was this not a national forum where the medium of expression, English, would intimidate her and compel her early exit?

No. Akua Donkor, a farmer with modest formal education had not lost her way.  She is the flagbearer and founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) which has been cleared to be on the presidential ballot this December.

The only female flagbearer, her counterparts on the ballot will include Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, John Mahama, Alan Kyerematen, etc.

She has been a household name for over ten years. In 2012, she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission entering the presidential race for not meeting relevant pre-requisites that had nothing to do with level of education.

Her party was again disqualified in 2016. In 2020, however, Madam Donkor appeared on the presidential ballot with 11 others, and placed 11th out of 12 aspirants.

That year, she obtained 5,574 votes being 0.04% of the total votes cast; and was the first to concede defeat when  results were declared.

In the forthcoming presidential election, Akua Donkor will be No. 3 on the presidential ballot.

In a television appearance days before the recent meeting, she had turned upside down a card on which her identity numeral (No. 3) was written; but that was not her fault, for ‘to err is human.’

At Tuesday’s well-attended IPAC meeting with the EC, her zero proficiency in English did not silence the 72-year-old lady. Dressed in white traditional wear, she sat with calm confidence and keenly followed discussions on ‘illegal’ voter transfers, a ‘bloated’ register and other irregularities suspected as part of a grand conspiracy to favor the ruling party.

After several failed attempts to catch the moderator’s eye, Akua Donkor eventually had her turn, grabbed the microphone and in a shrill voice rattled her entire submission in fluent Twi.

Without mincing words, the flagbearer over two minutes slammed the opposition NDC for chasing a problem they had created themselves, and received applause around the table.

But her speech soon tapered off and yielded to an impatient moderator behind her, who appeared uncomfortable with the ‘vernacular’ intrusion.

Hear below, excerpts of Akua Donkor’s viewpoint at the forum originally spoken in Twi: ‘Since Jean Mensah assumed the seat as Commissioner, the NDC has not stopped harassing her. They even took her to court but ended up disgracing themselves. She is a special person, and I congratulate her. But why the constant harassment?’

‘During the limited voter registration, the Commission advised parties to send representatives to all registration centers to make sure only qualified voters registered. I myself sent my party representatives.

The Electoral Commission even provided a notebook where you could challenge suspicious names, those below 18, or non-Ghanaians.

A pen was available for the purpose. But NDC, why subject Jean Mensah to such harassment? She is a special woman sent by God. I pray God will protect her… And did you say over 50 or so names in the register are deceased people?

You are liars! Produce your evidence! Why tell such blatant lies without evidence? During the voter registration at Kukuom, you people pulled a gun.

In Cape Coast and Kasoa you chased the NPP and slashed people with cutlasses.’

‘Is this country your property? Where are you people taking Ghana? Give us a peace of mind to vote. The forthcoming election will be clean and transparent; there are no issues…,’ she fumed as the entire forum looked on, including a foreign reporter behind her.

Akua Donkor indeed represents a huge category of ‘non-literate’ Ghanaians who are constantly intimidated and terrorized by a small percentage of English speaking elite who mistake English as a sign of wisdom, and the African language as a mark of inferiority.

It is not surprising that the media report on Akua Donkor’s speech, attracted considerable verbal abuse.

Find below a sample of insults on the social media, on the non-literate Akua Donkor :‘Useless…Villager…Illiterate…Cassava thief; her brain has gone insane; she drinks galamsey water; ugly witch…menopause trance… foolish woman… Agbelema cassava…’ and other unprintable insults.

The Akua Donkor Twi intervention recalls three women with limited formal education who were members of Ghana’s Consultative Assembly that drafted our current Constitution in 1991/92. I did a study of their floor contribution to  proceedings.

Madam Abena Atea (alias Gloria Prempeh) representing the market women of Ashanti, Eastern and Brong Ahafo regions, who contributed to consultative assembly debates in Twi; Ms. Elizabeth Owusu and Mrs. Grace Oku representing Accra Market Women who spoke Ga.

These actively contributed to discussions on various topics including the presidency, presidential terms, coups d’etat, representation on the National Security Council, etc.

The parliamentary venue at the time benefitted from translation facilities which have since been rudely demolished.

Times have changed, and Ghanaians now refer to indigenous efforts of Akua Donkor in unprintable words only because she has limited formal education; aims at a high public office, and dares to speak at a formal forum in her mother tongue.

But compare Akua Donkor to a man of honor at the forum: a medical doctor, former minister for communication, and former presidential spokesman whose ‘big English’ last Tuesday left me looking desperately for a dictionary. Here is part of his intervention:

‘Fixing the leakage is missing, and this is at the heart of our altruistic demand for a forensic audit…This is why we are saying we need to adopt a dichotomous approach…’  Those are excerpts from Dr Omane Boamah’s submission.

After all this ‘dichotomous’ approach and ‘altruistic demands,’ what if on 7th January, 2025 the entire controversy is put to rest, and Ghana swears in as the sixth president of the 4th Republic, ‘Her Excellency President Akua Donkor?’.

A loud applause!

Jean Mensa doesn’t hate anyone – Akua Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/jean-mensa-doesnt-hate-anyone-akua-donkor/ Sat, 28 Sep 2024 08:40:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2454534 The presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party(GFP) Akua Donkor, has mounted a spirited defence for the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa.

Akua Donkor said the EC boss is not pursuing personal interests with her actions on the electoral process, adding she doesn’t hate anyone.

In an interview, Madam Donkor noted that Mrs Mensa is guided and committed to upholding electoral laws in the country.

“Jean Mensa doesn’t hate anyone, but you have to do what is required of you to avoid any issues with her.

“The EC is like Ghana’s God because it is the Commission that determines who qualifies to contest elections,” she told Accra-based Kasapa FM.

She has, therefore, admonished all political parties to comply with the requirements and rules of the electoral process.

“God gave us Jean Mensa, so if the Electoral Commission asks me to do something, that is exactly what I will do. Whoever speaks ill of Jean Mensa will not be forgiven by God,” she noted.

Madam Donkor’s comment follows the disqualification of 11 presidential candidates ahead of the 2024 election.

This was after the EC conducted a detailed examination of the nomination forms submitted by the candidates to ensure compliance with the legal requirements.

Despite the EC’s assurance to refund their filing fees, some of the candidates have initiated legal action against the Commission while others have vowed to do same.

I will complete Saglemi housing project if… – Akua Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-complete-saglemi-housing-project-if-akua-donkor/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 12:13:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2420841 Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, has stressed her commitment to completing the Saglemi Housing Project and provide free accommodation to public servants if elected President.

“Public servants play a crucial role in our country. They deserve comfortable housing without the burden of rent. I will support their well-being and recognize their contributions to our nation’s development” she stated.

Regarding the Saglemi housing project, which stalled under the NPP government, Akua Donkor criticized their approach.

“I am not happy with the NPP government partnering with private companies to finish and manage the Saglemi affordable housing project. When I come into power, I will complete the project myself”  he stressed.

The presidential hopeful said she is very busy with her nationwide campaign for a landslide victory in December.

“I am actively preparing for the upcoming presidential elections. I have been very busy lately campaigning and recently undertook a two-week nationwide campaign tour” she said.

Despite previous electoral challenges, Akua Donkor said she has done everything right for her name to be on the ballot.

“I believe in the vision I have for Ghana, and I am confident that the people will recognize and support our efforts this time” she added.

Why Kumchacha will choose Osofo Kyiri Abosom as running mate over Akua Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/why-kumchacha-will-choose-osofo-kyiri-abosom-as-running-mate-over-akua-donkor/ Sun, 21 Apr 2024 07:00:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2383784 The founder of Heaven’s Gate Ministry, Nicholas Osei, affectionately known as Prophet Kumchacha, says he will choose the leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly called Osofo Kyiri Abosom, over the leader of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, as a presidential running mate.

His comments were in response to the question of who between the two leaders he would prefer as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general election, considering the fact that they have similar trades in terms of language.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning Show with Roselyn Felli, he said Akua Donkor lacks the vision to support him, therefore, he will consider Osofo Kyiri Abosom, claiming that the GUM leader is more capable.

“Akua Donkor has no vision, and I can’t work with her. If I were to choose to align with someone, it would be Osofo Kyiri Abosom. He’s my friend and brother.”

He still insists on his presidential ambition, hoping to contest as an independent candidate with his party, Kum People’s Party (KPP).

Prophet Kumchacha asserted that he will never give up on his presidential vision until he emerges as president of Ghana. He promises to contest, no matter how long it will take him.

“I believe that when you contest something for the first time and you are unable to win, it is not the end of your life. Former president Kufuor contested three (3) times before he became president; Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo contested 3 times before he won as president; and the late president John Evans Atta-Mills contested 3 times before he became president. God hasn’t revealed to me how long it will take, but I’ll contest until I become president one day,” he asserted.

Kumchacha also addressed some comments by Reverend Owusu Pempah regarding his predictions for the upcoming elections in December.

In his recent sermon during the Easter period, the prophet declared that no presidential aspirant can win the elections without visiting his church to receive blessings.

“If I declare that a person won’t be president, I’m not bragging, but what I’ve said about you will come to pass no matter what you do. But when I support you with my heart, you’ll win. So, this is where the presidential seat is based. You can fast and pray, but there’s a little direction you need that requires only my attention,” Owusu Pempah said in his speech.

His declaration did not go down well with most Ghanaians, as he received severe backlash from social media users and some political critics.

But speaking on the show, Prophet Kumchacha agreed to visit Rev. Owusu Pempah to receive his anointing in order to win the elections.

“I’ll go and see him because Rev. Owusu Pempah is a powerful, dynamic man of God, and he’s highly anointed.”

Meanwhile, Prophet Kumchacha says he is not intimidated by language, even though the English language might seem to be a threat to his campaign. He believes that the success of a nation is not dependent on language.

2024 polls: I will re-introduce shift system in schools – Akua Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-i-will-re-introduce-shift-system-in-schools-akua-donkor/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 12:27:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2382142 The founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, has pledged to revive the Ghana Education Service (GES) should she be elected President in the December presidential elections.

She outlined her vision for educational reforms, which includes the introduction of morning and afternoon shifts in schools.

Madam Donkor believes this system will ease the burden on students and improve access to education.

She claimed the concept of free Senior High School (SHS) was originally her idea but was disqualified from contesting in the 2016 elections.

In her view, her disqualification paved the way for the current President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to implement the policy.

“I brought the free SHS, and because I was disqualified in 2016, that is why Nana Addo implemented it.

“Parents wouldn’t pay any money; you just have to take your children to school. The children are supposed to go to school morning and afternoon, then they close for another batch to go in the afternoon and close in the evening” Madam Donkor stated.

Her motive for this system, the presidential hopeful explained, is because she did not get the opportunity to go to school.

“I couldn’t go to school, so I want to create an opportunity to everyone to have education for a better life” she said in an interview on Akoma FM.

Cheerful as always, Madam Donkor appeared in a colourful Kaba and Slit with a nicely styled black wig.

The conference has been necessitated by the number of aspirants contesting the NPP flagbearer race in the build up to the 2024 election.

Madam Akua Donkor

Per the party constitution, if more than five aspirants contest, a special electoral college is held to reduce the number to five.

In this election, former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen is contesting with nine other aspirants, including Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former NPP General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong, and former Ministers Boakye Agyarko and Dr Akoto Owusu Afriyie.

After concluding his speech and preparing to return to his seat, President Akufo-Addo was surprised to find Akua Donkor, the founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), standing behind him with a cheerful expression.

In an unexpected turn of events, Akufo-Addo joined Akua Donkor in a dance, much to the delight of the enthusiastic crowd. Akua Donkor even requested a photo with the president, which he happily granted amidst the singing of the gathered supporters.

The Assin North by-election was necessitated by the removal of Quayson, the incumbent lawmaker, following a Supreme Court ruling that cited procedural issues surrounding his nomination as a parliamentary candidate in 2020.

Quayson has been selected as the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and will face Charles Opoku in what analysts predict to be a closely contested race, possibly favoring the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Madam Donkor believes there is a deliberate attempt to attack her, following the latest incident at her hometown in the Ashanti Region.

The thieves tore down a temporary wooden structure she had erected and made away with 20 packets of roofing sheet, 10 sheep and 39 fowls meant to fund the building of a police post.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News’ Samuel Asare, Akua Donkor lamented the incessant thievery in the district, for which she was intending to build a police post to curb the crime rate.

She disclosed that she had teamed up with the Ghana Police Service, and had cleared a piece of land to begin the project.

However, she said some opinion leaders kicked against her project, saying she believes they could have a hand in the thievery.

On whether the police have been informed, she said plans are underway to notify the Service, and she will see to it that investigations commence and the perpetrators are brought to book.

This would be the second time Akua Donkor would be attacked in the space of three months.

On October 26, she announced that there had been an attempt on her life inside her home.

She said the attacker made away with her GHS7,000 after failing to eliminate her.

For this, the politician believes her life is in danger.

She claimed the incident occurred over the weekend at her residence, saying the suspected assassin made away with her GHC 7,000.00 and other valuable items.

“I was at my office when the person came to me, saying he is a party member and voted for me in the 2020 election and has come to encourage me not to give up.

“So I took him to my house where he stayed for days, dined and had conversations with my driver but eventually left on my blind side. He took my money and bag with other items,” she narrated on Kumasi-based Angel FM.

According to her, she had a call days later during which the caller disclosed he was a hitman sent after her but does not know why he aborted the mission.

When asked if she has lodged a complaint with the police, Madam Donkor answered in the negative, stating she didn’t know how to go about it.

She also added that she would, in the coming days, initiate processes to file the complaint.

The founder and leader of Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, is advocating for local dialects to be used in sensitizing people about illegal mining, known in local parlance as galamsey.

According to her, most of the small-scale miners are not fluent English speakers hence the need to use local languages in sensitizing them on the issue.

“What I want to say is that all that he [President Akufo-Addo] has said, he has to say them again. He has to reorganize the programme [National Dialogue on Small Scale Mining] again because those who mine the gold, none of them understands English,” she suggested.

The two-time presidential aspirant said although some of the miners would have tuned in to the programme, they would not understand the forum.

Commending the media for their role in the galamsey fight, Akua Donkor said the media should also do well in using local languages in spreading messages against the practice.

“Let’s speak our language,” she reiterated.

Background

A two-day National Consultative Dialogue on small-scale mining begun on Wednesday, April 14, and ended on Thursday, April 15, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The purpose of the forum was to solicit views, proposals, and suggestions from diverse stakeholders in the small-scale mining industry, to develop appropriate policy interventions for the sector.

The Dialogue was organised by the Forestry Commission under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The event was graced by President Akufo-Addo, Lands and Natural Minerals Minister, Samuel Jinapor, Chief of Staff, Frema Opare and many other dignitaries.

Per Mr Pratt’s perspective, madam Donkor made a mockery of herself following her loud jubilation at President Nana Akufo-Addo’s residence at Nima.

“What was she doing on the ballot; if she was so happy he won, why challenge President Akufo-Addo?”

The analyst, who said he had worked with top guys in politics, said the proper thing madam Donkor should have done was join president Akufo-Addo’s campaign team.

The polling centre has about 535 eligible voters.

The presidential hopeful is optimistic of winning the polls.

“All I want to see is that at the end of the day, I will have a one-touch win,” she said.

Madam Donkor was named among 12 aspirants who were cleared by the Electoral Commission to contest the eighth presidential elections of the Fourth Republic.

The presidential candidate has promised to ensure that Ghanaians enjoy peace and happiness if elected into office on December 7, 2020.

She explained that she will achieve these two attributes of a good life for Ghanaians by making their lives comfortable.

Although she has no formal education, she promised to deliver free education from kindergarten to Senior High School as well as free healthcare, water, and electricity under her administration.

I’ll ensure peace, happiness for all – Akua Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/ill-ensure-peace-happiness-for-all-akua-donkor/ Fri, 04 Dec 2020 16:38:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1889224 The presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party, Madam Akua Donkor, has appealed to the electorate to vote for her to bring peace and happiness to all.

She said the only way people could enjoy peace was to make life comfortable for them.

Madam Donkor said she would make businesses in the country’s ports free from any charges, including education, from kindergarten to Senior High School, and provide healthcare facilities, water and electricity.

According to her, she intends to use revenue accrued from the country’s natural resources such as gas and oil, minerals, cocoa and timber to improve on the life of the people.

She further pledged to support journalists by providing each media house with a bus to enable them to go about their duties effectively.

The GFP presidential hopeful also promised to extend maternity leave from three months to a year for nursing mothers so they can have enough time to properly take care of themselves and their babies.

For orphans, the mentally impaired and physically challenged persons, Madam Donkor said she would provide shelter for them and also cater for their basic needs, adding that her government would also assist owners of orphanages to cater for the needs of the children.

Traders would also be provided with modern market facilities to facilitate their businesses.

Difference

The flag bearer said though she had not had any formal education, truth, transparency and love for humanity set her apart from the other presidential aspirants.

Madam Donkor also said her opponents had not demonstrated enough commitment to tackle corruption which she said was ruining the country.

According to her, the country will continue to be poorer if truth and transparency did not prevail, adding that when voted into power, she would rule the nation with integrity.

She described her chances of winning the elections as bright because she is a mother who understands the plight of the people.

Personal life

Madam Donkor is the only child of her parents. She was born on February 1952, and hails from Afigya Kwabre in the Ashanti Region.

She is a cocoa farmer and has had no formal education because of her love for farming from childhood.

Madam Donkor was elected Assembly Member for Hemang after a keenly contested election with six other opponents.

Her ambition to be President was evident in the 2012 polls where she applied to contest as an Independent candidate.

However, she was disqualified by the Electoral Commission (EC), a decision she disagreed with, but has tagged herself ‘Her Excellency’ ever since.

In 2016, she was barred again by the EC because of the numerous errors on her nomination form.

In October this year, she successfully filed her documents to contest this year’s elections as the flag bearer of the GFP and she is number five on the ballot paper.

Her running mate is Ernest Frimpong-Manso Adakabre, a journalist and lawyer.

Madam Akua Donkor said her 5th position on the ballot paper indicates victory because the figure five is associated with several victories.

The GFP leader made the observation in an interview on Accra-based Onua FM Friday.

Her views were being sought on the survey conducted by the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, and released on Thursday, November 26.

According to the survey, President Nana Akufo-Addo would win the 2020 elections by 51.7 percent.

She said in Twi that the number five means victory because the name Jesus has five letters.

She added that: “David killed Goliath in the Bible with five stones and the figure is five”, making five an enviable position on the ballot paper.

Madam Donkor recalled that in the 2016 elections, then-candidate Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party was on the fifth position and he won so she is convinced her position on the ballot paper would win her the election on December 7, 2020.

Madam Donkor said though she did not get any formal education, that will not deter her from supporting others in achieving their dreams.

“Their ability to learn and complete the science course alone is heartwarming and we need to motivate them to do more in their chosen career path so I will pay the allowance,” she announced at the first Presidential Debate in Akan organised by Adom TV, Adom 106.3 FM, Nyhira 104.5 FM, Asempa 94.7 FM and Adomonline among others.

She also indicated trainees will be sent overseers to continue their education where necessary.

The GFP founder assured the trainee teachers allowances will also be no exception, adding that they will be given free cars and fuel.

The allowances of both teacher and nursing trainees were withdrawn by the erstwhile Nationa Democratic Congress administration after it complained it limited the intake into the training institutions.

It was further argued that it was unfair for nursing and teacher trainees to receive allowances when other tertiary students didn’t enjoy the same.

Its cancellation in 2014 reportedly caused undue hardship for thousands of trainee nurses nationwide, leading to President Nana Akufo-Addo taking up the issue in 2016 with a pledge to restore it if given the nod at the polls to lead the country.

True to his words, the allowance has been restored and each trainee is expected to receive GH¢400 a month – rather than the GH¢350, the students were being paid before it was scrapped in 2014.

Flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, has a message for Jehovah’s Witnesses in the country.

She said since their religious beliefs do not allow them to exercise their franchise, they will not enjoy any benefit under her presidency.

Justifying her decision, Madam Donkor explained that since they have refused to exercise their civic duty, they don’t deserve to ensure any freebies from the State.

Therefore, should she win the December 7 general election, her first action will be to expel all Jehovah’s Witnesses from the civil and public service and also prevent their children from enjoying free education.

“Why should you benefit from government if you don’t vote? So I will make sure none of them work in government sector,” Madam Donkor said during the first Akan presidential debate in Accra Monday.

The only opportunity available for Jehovah’s Witnesses in her government, she added, is for them to engage in private business.
