The Association expressed deep disappointment over the failure of state authorities to bring closure to the case—seven years after Suale’s brutal assassination.

Addressing the media on Monday, November 3, 2025, to mark the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor called for full transparency and accountability from the Attorney General’s Office and the Ghana Police Service.

“The GJA demands a full and transparent explanation from the Attorney General’s Department on the reasons for discontinuing the case. The Ghana Police Service must also provide clarification, as we now have a contrary briefing or report. We call on the police to outline the clear steps being taken to identify the real culprit,” he said.

Mr. Dwumfuor also raised concerns over the Cybersecurity (Amendment) Bill, 2025, warning that certain provisions could undermine press freedom if passed without broad stakeholder consultation.

“We call for broad engagement, public consultation, and education to fine-tune the bill to ensure that every sector directly impacted understands and makes the needed input in the public interest. If what the amendment seeks to cure will worsen the cyber ecosystem, then we must tread cautiously,” he cautioned.

The GJA President reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to defending media freedoms and holding duty-bearers accountable.

“The GJA and the media will always seek to protect these guaranteed rights and ensure that they are not taken from us,” he stressed.

Ahmed Suale murder: A sad and shameful day for press freedom – EFL condemns discharge of suspect https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suale-murder-a-sad-and-shameful-day-for-press-freedom-efl-condemns-discharge-of-suspect/ Fri, 17 Oct 2025 06:40:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2589444 The Economic Fighters League (EFL) has expressed strong outrage over the Attorney General (AG) advice to the Madina District Court to discontinue the prosecution of Daniel Owusu Koranteng, the man accused in connection with the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

The group described the decision as a “clear obstruction of justice” and “a sad and shameful day for press freedom,” insisting that the move undermines accountability and public trust in Ghana’s justice system.

In a statement titled “Justice for Ahmed Suale”, the EFL said it was “deeply disappointed” by what it sees as a growing pattern of the Attorney General’s office abusing its constitutional power to enter nolle prosequi — a legal mechanism used to discontinue prosecutions.

“The Economic Fighters League condemns this directive in the strongest possible terms. We view this action as a clear obstruction of justice and an affront to the rule of law, accountability, and the right to a fair trial,” the statement signed by Commander-In-Chief Ernesto Yeboah read.

Ahmed Suale, a member of the Tiger Eye P.I. investigative team led by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, was shot dead on January 16, 2019, in Madina, following his involvement in the famous “Number 12” exposé that uncovered corruption in African football.

His killing remains one of the most prominent unresolved attacks on journalists globally.

The EFL argued that the Attorney General’s office has increasingly relied on nolle prosequi to terminate politically sensitive cases, often freeing suspects without securing convictions.

“The office of the Attorney General has, in recent times, filed and closed more cases under nolle prosequi, effectively freeing alleged suspects and plausible criminals, than it has secured convictions against individuals who have maimed, murdered, polluted our rivers and forests, or caused financial loss to the state and people of Ghana,”
the group stated.

They added that such decisions “represent a deep rot within Ghana’s justice system”, calling it “a betrayal of the people’s trust and a major blow to the national reset agenda.”

Reports from the court suggest that the AG’s directive to end the case against Koranteng followed an assessment that police investigations had failed to establish enough evidence for conviction.

The Fighters League, however, believes the move could be politically motivated, warning that individuals linked to the case may seek public office.

“We note with grave concern that would-be persons of interest in the Ahmed Suale murder case are likely to present themselves for election to high political positions,” the statement continued.

The group called for a reopening of the case, urging the President and Parliament to exercise oversight over what it described as “a compromised office of the Attorney General.”

“It is imperative that this case be expedited, reopened, and concluded transparently before any such individuals are allowed to contest for public office. Justice must not be deferred for the sake of politics,” the EFL demanded.

They also appealed to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to take a firmer stand.

“We further call on the GJA to abandon its usual posture of polite press releases and convene an emergency assembly of the media fraternity. If the state can casually discard the pursuit of justice for a murdered journalist, then no journalist in Ghana is safe.”

Ahmed Suale: AG justified in dropping case, but probe must continue – Adawudu https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suale-ag-justified-in-dropping-case-but-probe-must-continue-adawudu/ Wed, 15 Oct 2025 12:32:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588668 Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Legal and Communication Team, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, has urged authorities to reopen and thoroughly investigate the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, following the Attorney General’s decision to discontinue the case.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, lawyer Adawudu called on investigators to “return to the drawing board” and pursue a more credible, evidence-driven probe.

“For me, this should be an eye-opener. This is something we should look at and go back to the drawing board and look at it and give a specimen. We should be professionals.

“We must improve the way we do investigations. This case should speak to the conscience of the investigators and authorities. I want the investigators to speak the truth,” he said.

He explained that investigative work in Ghana is often hampered by limited resources and inadequate institutional support, resulting in what he described as “armchair investigations.”

“I think some of the people at the top make things difficult for the younger ones. And some of the investigators, too, the system doesn’t have money for them to travel and do all these investigations. And they do armchair investigations.

“I think that if the system is being researched and we’re being bold for authorities to speak the truth. Let us be bold to speak truth to authority. We need to come to the logical conclusion of the killing of Ahmed Suale so that it never happens again,” he stated.

Mr. Adawudu also praised the Attorney General’s decision to drop the case, describing it as a bold and pragmatic move given the lack of solid evidence.

“I commend the Attorney General for being bold. Reasons why it will also be discontinued, as he has given, which is that the evidence that has been brought cannot convict. That means you will go to court and do a shoddy job. If they find facts which connect him [suspect], he can be brought back,” he said.

He further emphasized the need for transparency and professionalism to ensure that justice is ultimately served in Ahmed Suale’s murder case.

On Tuesday, October 14, the Madina District Court discharged the accused, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, who had been facing charges of murder and abetment of murder in connection with Suale’s death, following the Attorney General advice.

Ahmed Suale, a prominent member of the Tiger Eye P.I. investigative team, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in January 2019 — a crime that sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice.

However, investigations into the murder have made little progress, with minimal evidence linking suspects to the killing.

Ahmed Suale murder: Court discharges Daniel Koranteng following A-G’s advice https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suale-murder-court-discharges-daniel-koranteng-following-a-gs-advice/ Tue, 14 Oct 2025 14:23:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588385 In a significant development in the protracted investigation into the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, the Madina District Court has formally discharged Mr. Daniel Owusu Koranteng.

This decision follows a comprehensive review of the evidentiary materials by the Office of the Attorney-General (A-G) and subsequent legal advice issued to the prosecution.

The Honorable Court presided over by Her Worship Susan D. Nyakote’s decision implies that the Prosecution’s case case lacked the requisite evidentiary threshold to sustain charges of abetment of murder and murder against the accused.

The A-G’s legal opinion, grounded in a meticulous analysis of the police docket, concluded that the purported call records used to implicate Mr Koranteng were inconclusive and failed to establish any direct or circumstantial link between him and the commission of the offence.

Also, none of the sketches generated by the police based on vivid descriptions of the eye witnesses resemble the accused.

Pursuant to the directive of the Attorney-General, the prosecution has been advised to redirect its investigative efforts toward identifying and apprehending the principal perpetrators of the heinous crime, namely, the two unidentified gunmen who executed the fatal attack and remain at large six years after the incident.

The prosecution also notified the court that based on the advice received by the A-G, her instructions were that the accused be discharged.

Mr. Koranteng, who appeared in court clad in a white shirt symbolizing vindication and peace, was accompanied by his legal counsel, Emma-Jean Markin, Esq., and Frederick Gurah Sampson, Esq.

The discharge marks a legal and moral victory for Mr Koranteng, who has consistently maintained his innocence throughout the course of the investigation.

The discharge reaffirms the fundamental legal principle that an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.

The decision not only clears Mr Koranteng’s name but also serves as a clarion call for a more targeted and effective pursuit of justice for the slain journalist.

Mahama orders expedited probe into Ahmed Suale, J.B Danquah’s murder https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-orders-expedited-probe-into-ahmed-suale-j-b-danquahs-murder/ Thu, 27 Mar 2025 16:26:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2519588

President John Mahama has called for a swift and thorough interrogation of the suspect linked to the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale and former Abuakwa South MP, J.B. Danquah Adu.

Speaking during a courtesy call by a delegation from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), led by its president, Efua Ghartey, Mahama stressed that interrogating the suspect promptly could lead to further arrests and help bring closure to the cases.

“Investigations into significant killings and murders have remained unresolved. I have urged the police and investigative bodies to take a more proactive approach, especially in cases like that of Ahmed Suale. That is why a suspect has been arrested, and we hope his interrogation will lead to further arrests. There are several other cases, including the JB Danquah case, which must be expedited in terms of prosecution and investigations,” he stated.

Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring justice for victims of unresolved murders.

Meanwhile, businessman and former associate of Ahmed Suale, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, was arrested and charged with murder last week.

Additionally, Daniel Asiedu is facing a retrial over the murder of J.B. Danquah Adu following a hung jury verdict in December 2024.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), in partnership with the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has welcomed progress in ensuring justice for the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Daniel Owuusu Koranteng, also known as Amakye, was arrested on March 19 in connection with the 2019 murder of Suale. He was remanded in custody by the Madina District Court, with his next court appearance scheduled for April 1.

The arrest marks a significant step forward in the long-running investigation into Suale’s killing, who was shot dead by unidentified individuals riding a motorbike in Madina, Accra, in January 2019.

In a press release issued on March 20, the GJA expressed hope that this breakthrough would bring justice for Suale and provide relief to media freedom advocates both in Ghana and internationally.

“We hope this breakthrough in the arrest and prosecution of suspect Daniel Owuusu Koranteng will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad,” the GJA statement read.

Suale, known for his investigative work exposing corruption within Ghanaian football, was murdered in a case that sent shockwaves through the global media community.

The GJA has been closely monitoring the developments and committed to further engagement with authorities to ensure continued progress.

The GJA also emphasized its ongoing efforts to address assaults on journalists in Ghana, including the case of journalist Latif Iddrisu, which has been raised with the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.

Anthony Bellanger, the General Secretary of the IFJ, praised the arrest as a critical step in the fight against impunity for crimes against journalists.

“This is a crucial step in our relentless struggle to end impunity for crimes committed against journalists. We call on the authorities of Ghana to continue their investigation into the killing of our colleague, Ahmed Suale, until the perpetrators are prosecuted and brought to justice,” Bellanger stated.

As the investigation continues, both the IFJ and GJA remain committed to ensuring justice for Suale and ensuring swift legal action for crimes against journalists.

Ahmed Suale Murder: Evidence was insufficient for prosecution – Tuah Yeboah https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suale-murder-evidence-was-insufficient-for-prosecution-tuah-yeboah/ Thu, 20 Mar 2025 09:37:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2516956

Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah has shed light on the challenges encountered during the early stages of the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

In an interview on Channel One TV, Tuah Yeboah revealed that during his tenure, the Attorney General’s office found the available evidence insufficient to pursue charges against any suspects linked to the case.

“During our time, the police conducted investigations and submitted the docket to the AG’s office for review. After examining the docket, we realized there wasn’t enough evidence to warrant the prosecution of anyone, and we advised the police to continue with their investigation,” he explained.

Tuah Yeboah expressed cautious optimism about recent progress in the case, particularly the arraignment and remand of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng.

“I am happy that today they have been able to get someone who has been arraigned before a court and remanded to prison custody,” he stated.

However, he raised concerns about the strength of the evidence against the suspect, questioning, “But the question is, do they have enough evidence?”

Ahmed Suale’s murder suspect admits taking his photos https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suales-murder-suspect-admits-taking-his-photos/ Wed, 19 Mar 2025 13:38:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2516648

Thirty-five-year-old businessman Daniel Koranteng, also known as Nana Amakye, has denied allegations that he sold photographs of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale to Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong before Suale’s murder in 2019.

Koranteng, who has been remanded in custody by the Madina District Court, faces provisional charges of murder. Prosecutors claim that he played a role in Suale’s killing, referencing call records and his presence near the journalist’s residence at the time of the murder.

“Call records placed the accused in Madina near Suale’s residence before and at the time of the murder,” the prosecution stated.

However, in court, Koranteng rejected claims that he provided photographs of the deceased to Kennedy Agyapong, despite admitting he knew Suale, had visited Agyapong, and had taken photos with the journalist.

“He admitted knowing the deceased, visiting Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, and taking photographs with the deceased but denied selling the photographs to anyone,” the prosecution revealed.

The prosecution further asserts that Suale had identified Koranteng as the person responsible for supplying the images later broadcast on Net2 TV, where Agyapong called for retribution against the journalist.

According to the prosecution, Koranteng fled to the United Kingdom in 2019 after ignoring multiple police invitations and later returned to Ghana, where he was arrested in Amasaman on March 15, 2025, based on intelligence reports.

The court has remanded him into custody pending further investigations, with committal proceedings scheduled for April 1, 2025.

The prosecution has emphasized that investigations are ongoing.

Ahmed Suale’s murder suspect remanded https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suales-murder-suspect-remanded/ Wed, 19 Mar 2025 11:39:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2516536 The Managing Director of ISPY Company, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, has been remanded by the Madina Magistrate Court as a suspect in the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

He faces a provisional charge of murder in connection with the 2019 assassination, a case that has raised significant concerns about journalist safety in Ghana.

Koranteng, also known as Akwase Amakye, is the first individual arrested in relation to Suale’s killing and could play a key role in uncovering those behind the act.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale, a member of Tiger Eye PI, was shot dead near his family home in Madina on January 16, 2019. He had collaborated with the BBC on an investigative report exposing corruption in African football, which is believed to have made him a target.

His murder attracted international attention, highlighting the risks faced by investigative journalists in Ghana.

Koranteng’s arrest follows an extensive investigation by the FBI in collaboration with local law enforcement.

According to police sources, the investigation uncovered phone records linking Koranteng to Suale in the days before the murder. Prosecutors also stated that Koranteng was in Suale’s neighbourhood on the night of the incident.

While Koranteng admitted to taking photographs of Suale, he denies selling them to politician Kennedy Agyapong, who had displayed them on television and urged the public to attack Suale if they saw him.

The prosecution, however, claims that Suale’s lawyer identified Koranteng as the individual who sold the images to Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central.

Koranteng’s lawyer, Kofi Essel, described the charge as “shambolic” and argued that the allegations lacked solid evidence. He requested bail, stating that there was no substantial proof to justify the charge.

Magistrate Suzzy Nyakotey adjourned the case to April 1 for further investigations, raising a critical legal question on whether the sale of photographs alone could be sufficient grounds for a murder charge.

Authorities remain hopeful that Koranteng’s arrest could lead to further breakthroughs and justice for Ahmed Suale.

Ahmed Suale’s ‘friend’ arrested in connection with his murder  https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suales-friend-arrested-in-connection-with-his-murder/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 15:15:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2515664 The Ghana Police Service, in its efforts to further investigate the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, has arrested a key suspect linked to the case.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, is accused of betraying Suale by leaking his photographs to a prominent Ghanaian politician before his assassination.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was shot dead near his family home in Madina on January 16, 2019, by unknown assailants. His murder came after he collaborated with the BBC on an investigative report.

Amakye, a former colleague of Suale at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was dismissed from the investigative firm before the incident.

According to police intelligence, he fled Ghana immediately after authorities began linking him to the case.

His arrest follows crucial findings from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States, which uncovered phone records and other key evidence suggesting his involvement.

The FBI’s analysis reportedly includes phone conversations between Amakye and Suale in the days leading up to the murder. As part of the ongoing investigation, Ahmed Suale’s mobile phones were sent to the U.S. for forensic examination.

A source within the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) disclosed that Amakye used to frequently visit Suale at his residence in Madina.

However, upon sensing that police were closing in on him, he relocated to the United States.

Authorities say he secretly returned to Ghana last week, leading to his arrest at a hair-plaiting salon in Amasaman-Adease.

The development has sparked controversy within the police service, as a senior officer is reportedly attempting to interfere with the investigation.

According to sources, the officer is advocating for the suspect to be granted police inquiry bail rather than being immediately arraigned before court. The situation has reportedly created tension at the police headquarters.

Ahmed Suale was assassinated after he and his team at Tiger Eye PI exposed widespread corruption in African football, with a significant focus on Ghana.

In a Facebook post, A Plus revealed that he was invited to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters last year, where he provided crucial information about the case.

He alleged that a former government Minister orchestrated the crime, citing a “highly credible” source he discussed with the CID director.

Expressing frustration over what he perceives as stagnation in the investigation, A Plus urged the CID director to update the public on its progress.

“It is critical that the CID director updates the public on the progress of the investigation. At this point, it appears the matter has been sidelined,” he emphasized.

A Plus has given the Ghana Police Service a 48-hour ultimatum to provide updates on the case. Failing that, he vowed to use his authority as a Member of Parliament to summon the police to brief Parliament on the matter.

“If no update is provided within 48 hours, I will formally summon the Ghana Police Service to Parliament to account for their efforts on this case,” he declared.

Additionally, A Plus warned that if these measures yield no results, he would disclose what he knows about the case, including the alleged perpetrator’s name, through his social media platforms.

President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has urged the Attorney General (AG) to expedite the long-delayed Ahmed Suale case.

This appeal follows a recent attack on three journalists, prompting a media blackout on certain political figures.

During the GJA’s 75th Anniversary Lecture in Ho, Mr. Dwumfour stressed the association’s commitment to pressuring state authorities to secure justice for Ahmed Suale.

He also called on the government to strengthen its collaboration with the GJA to ensure the safety and security of journalists in Ghana.

Highlighting the crucial role of public support for the media, the GJA president encouraged anyone with information on the Ahmed Suale case to assist the police in their investigation.

“In 2024 alone, the GJA imposed a media blackout on key state personalities due to attacks on three journalists while they were on duty. Let me use this anniversary lecture to call on the government and authority to intensify its collaboration with the GJA in ensuring the safety and security of journalists in Ghana.

“We also wish to use this platform to appeal to the Attorney General to start expediting action on the Ahmed Suale murder case, a single issue that keeps affecting the position of the media on the Word Press Freedom Index.”

“Five years have passed since the murder of the investigative journalist, yet there appears to be no progress. As an association, we shall continue to put pressure on state authorities to demand justice for Ahmed Suale.

“I also want to urge anyone with information about those responsible for this matter to help the police investigate this case. The media cannot thrive without the support of the public. As a result, we call for collaboration in this regard as we work to address our developmental challenges.”

Ahmed Suale’s murder: GJA President’s all important message to AG https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suales-murder-gja-presidents-all-important-message-to-ag/ Tue, 14 May 2024 07:48:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2394168 The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called on the Attorney-General to release the investigative report on slain journalist, Ahmed Suale.

Mr Dwumfour has said the report will bring closure and help people, particularly Mr Suale’s family rest.

“As we speak today, we still haven’t gotten anywhere with investigations. The Attorney-General will come out and tell you that he has still not received any docket fit for prosecution.

“If you have not received a docket fit for prosecution, why don’t you make the docket you have received known to the public? It means that there’s still a docket, if it’s not fit for prosecution, give us the state of the investigative report on the matter. So that at least we can all go to sleep and say that this is what the police have gotten to,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Citi TV.

Ahmed was shot dead near his family house in Madina, Accra on January 16, 2019.

After five years, the unresolved and brutal killing of the investigative journalist of Tiger Eye PI by unknown assailants remains a troubling issue.

On February 20, 2024, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, revealed that his office has not received any docket fit for prosecution or action.

The Minister noted that four suspects were initially detained to assist with investigation but  were later released on police enquiry bail after eyewitnesses failed to identify them.

But Mr Dwumfour is of the view that security agencies have not been serious in resolving the issue.

“We are in this country where police officers were shot dead and in a matter of 24/48 hours, police have arrested [suspects]. Without any lead, they have been arrested and prosecuted, and some are on remand. So, that should tell you the unseriousness the security agencies or companies attach to the attacks on the media. This very real,” he pointed out,” he stated.

The GJA President also raised concerns on assaults on journalists and the inaction from security agencies.

“When was the last time you heard that a politician or a perpetrator of an attack on the media has been placed behind bars? They don’t take issues concerning the media very seriously,” he added.

Govt must take decisive action on Ahmed Suale’s murder – MFWA https://www.adomonline.com/govt-must-take-decisive-action-on-ahmed-suales-murder-mfwa/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 12:09:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2313642 The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has called on the government to take a more decisive stance in resolving the murder of Ahmed Hussein Suale, a journalist with the private investigative firm Tiger Eye P.I.

The call comes in the wake of the global commemoration of the International Day to End Impunity in Crimes Against Journalists on November 2, 2023.

Speaking to Citi News, Senior Programmes Officer at the MFWA, Muheeb Saeed, said the government has been blowing hot and cold on the issue.

“At times, they give assurances that they are working to ensure that the attackers are identified and punished and other times, we hear them speaking clearly which shows that they are in denial,” Saeed said.

He cited the example of President Akufo-Addo, who had said at the Ghana Bar Association that it was premature to conclude that Suale’s death was an attack on press freedom because the motives were unknown.

“It is, indeed, the responsibility of the state to apprehend the perpetrators for us to know the motive and the state cannot take refuge in the absence of the establishment of the truth, regarding the motives,” Saeed said.

“Once, he was a journalist and he had been threatened, and shortly after that threat, he was killed. It is reasonable to say that, he was killed because of his work, unless there’s evidence to the contrary,” he added.

Ahmed Suale, 31, was murdered in Accra in January 2019. His work on several high-profile investigative reports, including one that exposed corruption in Ghanaian football, had made him a target of threats.

This unsolved crime has badly impacted the country’s fortunes in press freedom.

The late Suale was a member of investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI, and was shot in January 2019.

Many have suggested that the killing may be linked to his work, which has ruffled very powerful feathers, leading to his assassination.

On the back of this, Mr Mahama says “We shall speed up the investigation of the assassination of Ahmed Suale and the perpetrators shall surely be brought to book.”

This came up during the NDC leader’s first official address since winning the flagbearership race in the National Democratic Congress’ just-ended primaries.

Addressing the gathering at the University of Development Studies in Tamale he explained that the protection of the media will be a priority for his administration if given the nod in the 2024 elections.

“The media must also be given the conducive and collaborative atmosphere to operate as the fourth power that they ought to be without threats, harassment, and assassinations,” he added on Monday.

Akufo-Addo sends fresh message on Ahmed Suale’s murder https://www.adomonline.com/akufo-addo-sends-fresh-message-on-ahmed-suales-murder/ Fri, 23 Dec 2022 16:47:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2199470 President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assured the families of Ahmed Suale and the media fraternity of his resolve to find the killers of the investigative journalist.

He said, so long as he remains in office, the perpetrators of the heinous crime will be brought to book.

President Akufo-Addo said this while addressing journalists at a dinner organized by the Ghana Journalists Association in Accra.

“I continue to be deeply regretful that despite the unseasoned best effort of the police, the perpetrators of the murder of Ahmed Suale can still not be found. But I assure you that, so far as I remain President, the dossier cannot be closed until they are brought to justice,” he said.

Ahmed Saule was shot dead by some unknown assailants in January 2019 at Madina in Accra.

He was the lead investigator of the Tiger Eye PI team in the Number 12 exposé on corruption in Ghana football.

Three years after his killing, police are yet to make any arrests over the murder and conclude investigations on the matter.

It was alleged by a cross-section of the public that, his murder was associated with his role in the Number 12 exposé which toppled the Ghana Football Association, and its then-president, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Its unfortunate Ahmed Suale’s suspects have not been arrested – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/its-unfortunate-ahmed-suales-suspects-have-not-been-arrested-akufo-addo/ Thu, 27 Oct 2022 16:36:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2176720 President Nana Akufo-Addo says he is unhappy with the lack of progress by the security agencies in identifying the culprits responsible for the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale.

The President expressed worry over the fact that the motive for the killing is yet to be established three years on.

Speaking to the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association at the Jubilee House on Thursday, October 27, President Akufo-Addo noted that the safety of journalists must be made “sacrosanct from agencies of the state” to allow for Press Freedom.

“Despite very wide efforts made by the police and CID we still have not been able to lay hands on the perpetrators of Suale’s death. It is unfortunate,” the President said.

According to him, the inability of the security agencies to locate the culprits of the heinous crime continues to be a problem for the nation.

For his part, the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor, appealed to President Akufo-Addo to protect journalists and ensure their safety in their line of duty.

“We are, however, concerned about the increasing rate of attacks on the media and journalists which contributes significantly to the worsening performance of Ghana in the World Press Freedom Index. We believe that adding your voice to the condemnation of such attacks will curb the impunity.”

Mr Dwumfuor disclosed that the GJA will launch the Journalists Support Fund (JSF) on November 2 to mark the International Day to end impunity and crimes against journalists.

The President in May last year said his government would not shield the murderers of Ahmed Suale.

“I could not have made it any clearer that the government has no interest in covering up whatever might be or whoever might be involved,” the President had said at a ceremony at the University of Cape Coast.

Ahmed Suale, who worked with the Tiger Eye Private Investigations team, was shot dead three years ago near his family home at Madina, Accra.

He was shot three times; twice in the chest and another in the neck by unidentified men while he was driving home.

The murder came shortly after the release of the ‘Number-12′ documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas’, a member of the Tiger Eye PI.

His murder has since remained unresolved though government has pledged commitment in seeking justice for Mr Suale.

Speaking to JoyNews on the sidelines of a GJA/UNESCO migration training programme, GJA President, Roland Affail Monney said the killing is one of the reasons Ghana continues to drop in press freedom rankings.

“We are overly worried that three years along the line, nothing has been done to expose, let alone deal surgically with the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

“We were promised by the President last year that the perpetrators will be found. Early on, there had been such promises that the Police were closing in on the criminals, but nobody has been arrested as we speak.

“This is one causal factor which tends to cause us to slip with decline on the league table of free media systems in Africa and the world. We expect our law and order community to scale up the efforts to expose the killers of Ahmed Suale and make them stand trial and if they are found guilty, they should taste the bitter end of the law,” Mr Monney appealed.

Ahmed Suale, who was with the Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was shot dead three years ago near his family home in Madina.

He was shot three times, twice in the chest and another in the neck by unidentified men while he was driving home.

The murder came shortly after the release of the ‘Number-12′ documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ Tiger Eye PI.

Before the murder, Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, had incited people to attack the journalist.

The murder has since remained unresolved though the government promised to remain resolute in seeking justice for Mr Suale.

The family of the late private investigator has bemoaned the delay, stating that, no arrests have been made, “no one has been charged or prosecuted for the crime after over two years.”

They want authorities to speed up investigations, adding that the family will not relent on its efforts to seek justice for the deceased.

“We are not going to be happy with whatever they [Police] tell us until they tell us that the people who committed the crime have been found.”

“I don’t think it is a matter that we can put behind us. We will continue to ask for the perpetrators of Ahmed Suale’s murder,” they told JoyNews in an earlier interview last year.

Ahmed Suale’s family to petition Int’l bodies for help with investigations https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suales-family-to-petition-intl-bodies-for-help-with-investigations/ Tue, 19 Jan 2021 18:53:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1907749 The family of the late journalist, Ahmed Suale, says they will petition international bodies to help with the investigation of his murder and ensure that justice is served.

Speaking on Newsnight on Joy FM, brother of the deceased said the family is frustrated by the Ghana Police’s delay in bringing the perpetrators to book two years after his death.

As such, they believe that seeking help from bodies like the United Nations (UN), United States (US) Embassy among others will help give the family the answers they seek, Mustapha Iddrisu, told Emefa Apawu, Monday.

“Nothing concrete is coming from the Ghane Police Service. We have cooperated with them, sometimes we go there just to inquire but then nothing comes out. All they tell us is that they are still investigating,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu was concerned that the evidence gathered for their case might be compromised during this period of delay.

“We are now going to petition the UN, the US embassy, we will petition the British High Commission and any other person that matters,” he said.

Mr Iddrisu said the family is not ready to let go without a fight and asked journalists in the country to help them push for justice.

Meanwhile, President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Affail Monney, has commented on the matter, imploring the police to do more to arrest the killers of Mr Suale.

“We believe that it is within the bounds of capacity of the Ghana police and law and order community to fish out the perpetrators and bring them to book.

“The urgent promptitude with which they have handled previous cases gives us hope that they can intensify the search for the killers of Ahmed Suale,” he told JoyNews’ Kwaku Asante.

GJA, others mark Ahmed Suale’s second anniversary https://www.adomonline.com/gja-others-mark-ahmed-suales-second-anniversary/ Tue, 19 Jan 2021 11:57:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1907291 The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) on Monday said the delay in serving justice by arresting and prosecuting the killers of Ahmed Suale, an investigative journalist, murdered two years ago, is unacceptable.

“It is not within the bounds of possibility to bring Suale back to life. But it is within the confines of the capacity of the police to bring the perpetrators to book. This is our Conviction,” Roland Affail Monney, President of the GJA, said at a forum to mark the second anniversary of the assassination of Mr Suale, who used to work for Tiger Eye, a media investigative entity in Accra.

Mr Monney said it was unfortunate that the initial communication from the Police that six persons had been arrested for questioning, did not yield any result while the assassins were still walking freely, two years afterward.

“We, therefore, ask the authorities to act with lightning-quick speed to purge the stain on the country’s image, the dim on our glittering democracy and the chill on media freedom inflicted by the unprecedented savagery of Suale’s death,” Mr Monney said.

The GJA President condemned the culture of impunity and the structure of permission created by “enemies of media freedom” and some leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who blatantly incited their supporters against certain media personalities after the declaration of the December 7 Presidential result.

While charging journalists to remain united and do their work with critical sensitivity, Mr Monney reiterated the Association’s commitment to stand by all journalists, including Efia Pokua and Kwame Sefa Kayi, both of Despite Media, Manase Azuri, a freelance Journalist, Phil Quartey of Metro TV, Umaru Sanda of Citi FM, Abdul Hayi Moomen of GTV, Evans Mensah, Kojo Yankson, Winston Amoah and Gifty Andoh Appiah, all of Multimedia, and others who suffered unjustified attacks, murderous threats and hefty insults in their line of duty.

The forum, which was also held to discuss the threats and attacks against journalists in Ghana, was addressed by various media-related associations, including the West Africa Journalists Association (WAJA), the International Federation of Journalists, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), among others, with the various representatives, calling on the State to protect journalists and prosecute perpetrators when found.

They also implored journalists to remain professional and resolute in seeking information and relaying it to society.

WAJA, in a solidarity message read by Mrs Linda Asante-Agyei, Vice-President of the GJA, said the marking of the second anniversary of Mr Suale’s death, renewed calls for justice to be served.

WAJA said Heads of State should be held responsible for attacks on journalists should they fail to investigate and bring perpetrators of heinous crimes against journalists to justice.

“It does not make sense that journalists are subjects of assault, torture, imprisonment and killing for simply doing their job, while political leaders allow those crimes go unpunished, this, is an obvious complicity,” it said.

The CPJ, on its part, described the murdering of journalists as the ultimate form of censorship, which also sought to silence journalists and their reporting, to intimidate those that would continue their work and replace clarity of purpose with fear.

The CPJ, therefore, called for justice for Mr Suale and all journalists who had suffered any form of intimidation or violence in the course of their practice.

Dr Nana Oppong, a legal practitioner and President of the Distinguished Scholars of Africa, said the work of journalists exposed them to many forms of risks and attacks, adding that most of them were, unfortunately, poor and so vulnerable, making them fall into political manipulations and public attacks.

He, therefore, called for a review of the 1992 Constitution and other laws of the State to well recognise journalists and protect their profession as the real Fourth Estate of the Realm.

Specifically, Dr Oppong, called for the passing of the ‘Defenders of Public Interest Act’, a law, he said would provide special security, targeted training, compensation and financial support to professional journalists, their families and other persons engaged in sensitive assignments, investigations and projects of national importance.

We remain resolute in seeking justice for Ahmed Suale – Govt https://www.adomonline.com/we-remain-resolute-in-seeking-justice-for-ahmed-suale-govt/ Wed, 23 Dec 2020 12:32:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1897716 The government has pledged it support to assist the police to pursue justice for slain investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

Ahmed was shot dead near his family house in Accra on January 16, 2019. He is part of over 1000 journalists killed for reporting the news and bringing information to the public between 2006-2017 according to According to UNESCO.

Government has therefore been challenged to ensure maximum protection for the media in the discharge of their duties.

Based on this backdrop, Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide, says the government will continue to keep an eye on the matter until the perpetrators are brought to book.

At a forum on the safety of journalists held in Kumasi, he emphasised the need to seek justice for persons like Ahmed Hussein-Suale.

“Ghana has slipped on the World Press Freedom Index and lost its place of pride as Africa’s best-ranked country. Our drop has been attributed by most commentators to the unfortunate death of Mr. Ahmed Suale” he said.

This notwithstanding, Hon. Pius Hadzide said government has been firm in its resolve to support Ghana’s law enforcement agencies to crack this and many other criminal cases that are yet to see any meaningful prosecutions.

“At the Ministry of Information, we continue to keep our eyes on the ball and we ask for regular updates from the Ghana Police Service” he added.

For his part, UNESCO representative in Ghana, Abdourahamane Diallo called on authorities to speed up investigations into the killing of Ahmed Suale.

“UNESCO Director General has urged Ghana as a UNESCO Member State, to inform the Organization on the status of the investigation of the killing of Ahmed Suale, the investigative journalist. We are yet to see the perpetrators of Ahmed Suale brought to book after several calls to authorities to expedite investigations on this case” he stated.

The forum was organized by the National Media Commission (NMC).

Chairman of the Commission, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, says journalists must stay conscious of personal protection anything they are out to cover stories.

“We should be as wise as serpent in carrying out our responsibilities so that we will continue to be of importance and significance to the development of Ghana.

Pressure mounts on Akufo-Addo to seek justice for Ahmed Suale, others https://www.adomonline.com/pressure-mounts-on-akufo-addo-to-seek-justice-for-ahmed-suale-others/ Wed, 03 Jun 2020 18:15:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1805136 President Akufo-Addo has been asked to seek justice for Ahmed Suale and other slain Ghanaians after his tweet, advocating for the murderers of George Floyd to be brought to book.

George Floyd’s murder has unified the entire black race to stand up to their ‘white’ oppressors who have constantly subjected them to injustices over the years.

In this regard, Nana Akufo-Addo joined the global advocacy campaign only to be reminded of similar occurrences in Ghana which seems to have been swept under the carpets.

Social media users quickly advised him to divert that energy into uncovering the ‘senseless’ murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

The family is of the view that Ahmed’s murder has not been treated with much seriousness almost a year after the incident.

“In fact, the family is very disappointed in the security services and the government itself. It looks like they are not interested in the case. After all the noise, have you heard of anything again? And have you heard of any government official discussing it again? He lamented.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-Based Citi FM, Ahmed’s brother, Ibrahim Kamilu Tahidu lamented the family feels ignored.

Meanwhile, he added the family will hold some activities to commemorate Ahmed Suale’s one year of passing.

“Definitely as a Muslim, you know the one year will be on Wednesday, 15th January 2020, but we have decided to have it on Sunday. We will also have a Quran recitation,” he noted.

Speaking at the Media Freedom Conference in London jointly organized by the governments of UK and Canada, Anas, who has gained global respect for his daring investigative work expressed sadness at events that led to the killing of his colleague by unknown gunmen.

“In recent times, there have been developments in town that are very worrying – I recall the death of my colleague the hardworking journalist Ahmed Hussien Suale.”

Anas’ Tiger EyePI team aired an investigation in 2018 on corruption in African football, after which Ghanaian MP, Kennedy Agyepong, spoke against his methods in a series of programs he publicized on his TV station, Net 2 TV dubbed: “who watches the watchman?”

In it, he called for Anas to be hanged and further exposed the face of Ahmed Hussein Suale, who until then was not known by face to many Ghanaians.

“When the politicians mounted the stage and said that they would hang journalists, and said that they would beat journalists, if government had spoken and had been firm about it, Ahmed Suale would not have died,” Anas said.

He made the remark before an audience that included UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who is vying for the Prime Minister position, the Canadian Foreign Minister, Chrystia Freeland and renowned Human Rights lawyer, Amal Clooney.

He called on world leaders to do better to protect journalists facing threats from governments in their work and warned of the grave danger all of society could face over the loss of confidence in the media.

He made reference to his near-death experience covering a story in Tanzania recently.

“When we went back to the community as to why they had wanted to kill us for the story we were working on, they said they had given up on politicians and….they had given up on journalists because a lot of people were getting killed in their communities and no journalist stood up for them,” Anas noted.

“The lesson there for me is simple, if media freedom doesn’t resonate with other communities all of us are at risk.”

Anas also warned against the deliberate wrongful tagging of genuine undercover work by journalists as fake news by dictators who seek to undermine courageous work that exposes their misdeeds.

“If leaders are able to describe genuine work we have done undercover as fake news, then we are in trouble.”
