Dr Bright Adonia, has cautioned students against excessive reliance on artificial intelligence, warning that it could undermine their academic development if not used responsibly.

He gave the advice in an interview with Adom News during the university’s fourth matriculation ceremony, which was held under the theme, “The Impact of AI on Generative Critical Thinking and Academic Integrity.”

According to the Rector, although artificial intelligence presents valuable opportunities for research and learning, students must be careful not to allow it to replace critical thinking or reduce their engagement with lecturers.

He emphasised that interaction with lecturers remains essential in shaping students’ understanding, discipline, and overall academic growth.

Rev. Dr Adonia further noted that overdependence on AI tools could weaken analytical skills and pose risks to academic integrity if misused. He therefore encouraged students to adopt a balanced approach, using AI as a support tool rather than a substitute for independent thinking and active participation in lectures.

He also urged the students to uphold honesty in their academic work, stressing that integrity is a core value of the institution. The university, he said, is focused on producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also ethical and capable of addressing real-world challenges.

The matriculation ceremony officially ushered in a new group of students, with a call on them to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to excellence throughout their academic journey.
