Speaking with deep emotion, Akua Afriyie said the chaos that marred the December 7, 2024 polls left her heartbroken, insisting the NDC caused her unwarranted suffering.

She referenced the personal struggles she faces as a widow, explaining that the events of the polls added to her emotional distress.

“I have cursed the NDC for what they did. They should prepare for the doom that will befall them,” she declared. “God is the vindicator, and His judgment takes time. When the tragedy starts, they will know the tears they made a widow like me shed are what is manifesting in their lives.”

Her remarks revisit one of the most contentious election incidents of 2024. The election in Ablekuma North became one of the most chaotic in the country, with clashes between NPP and NDC supporters leading to the destruction of pink sheets at the collation centre.

The absence of these essential documents forced the Electoral Commission to halt collation six times.

A rerun was later conducted, during which the NDC’s candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, won the seat — a result Akua Afriyie has never accepted as fair.

She maintains that the commotion surrounding the original poll robbed her of victory, saying the emotional toll has stayed with her months after the rerun.

Shamima Muslim calls for end to political thuggery after Ablekuma North violence https://www.adomonline.com/shamima-muslim-calls-for-end-to-political-thuggery-after-ablekuma-north-violence/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 12:15:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555024 Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has strongly condemned political vigilantism following the violence that marred the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

The incident, which took place on Friday, July 11, at the St. Peter’s Polling Station, resulted in chaos and injuries to several individuals, including New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart and former minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Speaking on Joy News’ AM Show on Monday, July 14, Ms Muslim urged political parties to reassess their mobilisation strategies, particularly where young people are placed in harm’s way.

“We have all agreed that political parties have mobilised vigilante groups in the past. They have also used individuals to protect the ballot. Sometimes, those activities lead to violence,” she noted.

Drawing on her personal experience as a mother, she issued a heartfelt plea:
“And I, as a mother of two boys and two girls, would never encourage my son to go and put himself in a line of risk that could lead to his death. I won’t do that as a person.”

She called on political parties to dismantle structures that endanger the lives of their members.
“I think political parties ought not to organise around vehicles that would threaten the lives of their own members,” she added.

Ms Muslim’s remarks come amid heightened national concern over the resurgence of political vigilante groups and their involvement in Ghana’s electoral process.

NDC’s Adawudu blasts police over Ablekuma North rerun violence https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-adawudu-blasts-police-over-ablekuma-north-rerun-violence/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 10:08:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554948 Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Legal and Communications Team, Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu, has criticised the Ghana Police Service for its handling of violent incidents during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Adawudu condemned the chaos witnessed at various polling centres and expressed concern over the conduct of some police officers, particularly the assault on a journalist.

“For me, the police have questions to answer, especially when even a senior police officer had to slap people. I think that the police need to up their game,” he stated.

His comments follow the disturbances that occurred during the rerun on Friday, July 11, at polling stations including St. Peter’s Methodist Church and North Odorkor Polling Station 2.

Adawudu’s remarks add to a growing chorus of criticism from observers, political actors, and civil society organisations calling for accountability and improved security during elections.

Akosua Manu defends Hawa Koomson over Ablekuma North incident https://www.adomonline.com/akosua-manu-defends-hawa-koomson-over-ablekuma-north-incident/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 09:35:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554893 The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Adentan, Akosua Manu, has voiced strong support for former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson following the recent violent incident during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

She maintains that the former Minister was unjustly targeted and did not intend to provoke any confrontation.

In an interview with Channel One TV, Akosua Manu recounted the events as described by Madam Koomson. She stated that the former Minister was at the polling station in a peaceful manner when she was suddenly attacked. According to Koomson, she only used pepper spray in self-defence after perceiving a threat from one of the assailants, who appeared to be wielding a weapon.

“Her narration gave me goosebumps,” Manu said. “She mentioned that at one polling station, as she was entering, she was told she could only go in with one person. At the time, police personnel were next to her.

“She and her team were making the rounds. While she observed proceedings, her personal security team stayed back a bit. Suddenly, she heard people saying ‘where is she, where is she,’ and then she looked up and saw a group of young men approaching her.

“One of them she recognised. They literally charged at her. She said she saw something that looked like a weapon, and that’s when she quickly reached for her pepper spray. She said if it weren’t for the spray slowing them down, the outcome would have been worse than anticipated. Mind you, she didn’t go there to cause confusion,” Manu explained.

Mrs. Manu condemned the assault as an act of political aggression and called on all political actors and stakeholders to denounce violence—especially during democratic processes that are meant to promote peace and representation.

Photos from the Ablekuma North re-run https://www.adomonline.com/photos-from-the-ablekuma-north-re-run/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 11:34:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554477 The Electoral Commission (EC) conducted a rerun on Friday, July 11, across 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.

This followed disruptions during the December 2024 elections that hindered the final results’ collation.

Over 6,000 eligible voters were anticipated to participate in this electoral contest between Nana Akua Afriyie, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Ewurabena Aubynn, the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

But for attacks and violence recorded in some polling stations, the election was generally peaceful.

The voting process at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station was temporarily suspended due to a disturbance.

An unidentified individuals arrived in a pickup vehicle and forcibly entered the premises, despite the presence of law enforcement officers.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants overpowered the security detail and initiated an assault on several political figures, including former Member of Parliament and ex-Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, later visited the Odorkor Methodist polling station to assess reports of chaos and disturbances in the area.

Accompanied by his entourage, he toured several polling stations within the constituency to monitor the security situation and to help ensure a smooth electoral process.

Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, also visited the constituency and urged calm while condemning the chaos that broke out

At the end of the polls, the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious, securing 34,090 votes in the closely contested election.

Her main contender, the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie polled 33,881 votes.

This victory marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in 28 years since the NDC has won the seat which is a stronghold of the NPP.

Ablekuma North re-run: I won’t let my people down – Akua Afriyie vows https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-re-run-i-wont-let-my-people-down-akua-afriyie-vows/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 19:49:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553902 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, says she is determined to reclaim the seat in the upcoming election re-run, promising not to disappoint her supporters.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Madam Afriyie revealed overwhelming support from residents in all 19 electoral areas, including widows, who she says are standing firmly behind her.

“The best place to seek redress is in court and we did that, but the case was dismissed, so we have to continue with the re-run despite the party’s earlier stance,” she said.

She noted growing anger among constituents over attempts to unseat her, adding that their encouragement pushed her to stay in the race.

“I am a native of the constituency. I am coming with full force. I urge everyone to come out in their numbers and vote tomorrow, and I promise not to let them down,” she added.

Ablekuma North re-run: We cannot deny Owusu Afriyie this victory – Mpraeso MP https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-re-run-we-cannot-deny-owusu-afriyie-this-victory-mpraeso-mp/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 16:57:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553877 The Member of Parliament for Mpraeso, Davis Ansah Opoku, has declared his unwavering support for Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie in the upcoming Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run, insisting she is poised to reclaim the seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show, Mr. Opoku emphasized the party’s strength in the constituency, pointing out the NPP’s dominance in 14 out of the 19 polling stations involved in the re-run.

“Everyone is present in the constituency, which indicates that we are prepared for the elections. They are not defying the orders of the national council by participating in the election. I believe that if the council had the opportunity to meet again, they would reconsider their decision,” he said.

“If you look at the data, it shows that the NPP is strong in 14 out of the 19 polling stations. As a minority, we need the presence of Akua Afriyie in Parliament. Moving forward as a political party, we propose to the Electoral Commission ways to reform our electoral system.”

Mr. Opoku also dismissed fears of sanctions for supporting the re-run, calling on party supporters to turn out in their numbers to secure victory.

“We have been winning elections in this constituency, so what is there to fear? What do we gain by boycotting the election? We cannot deny Owusu Afriyie the chance to represent the people. She will win if we all come out tomorrow and vote for her.”

He further stated: “We are prepared to face any consequences if the party believes we are doing something wrong by supporting the election re-run. We are determined to secure victory tomorrow. She is going to win the elections, so let’s join hands and ensure her success.”

Ablekuma North: Rerun is an act of contempt of court – Justin Kodua [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-is-an-act-of-contempt-of-court-justin-kodua-video/ Tue, 08 Jul 2025 16:55:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552896 General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) over its decision to rerun the Ablekuma North parliamentary election, describing it as “an act of contempt of court” and a dangerous precedent.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kodua insisted that the January 4 court order directed the EC to complete the collation of results and declare a winner—not to organise a rerun.

“All the EC requested was police escort for collation, so why this sudden change? We will never be part of a rerun,” he stated.

Mr. Kodua further challenged the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to produce the original pink sheets if they truly believe they won the election.

“The NDC knows they have lost but are trying to intimidate us. If they genuinely won, they should have supported the EC with police protection for collation,” he argued.

The NPP maintains that it won the election based on its pink sheet records and is urging the EC to proceed with the collation of results from the three outstanding polling stations—not a rerun of 19 polling stations as announced.

He added that the EC’s “u-turn posturing doesn’t add up” and called on the Commission to explain the sudden shift in its approach.

Ablekuma North: NPP PC dares EC as she rejects re-run [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-npp-pc-dares-ec-as-she-rejects-re-run-audio/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 09:34:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550953 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for  Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie, has strongly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations within the constituency.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former MP insisted that she won the 2024 parliamentary election “fair and square,” citing results from all pink sheets in her possession.

According to her, the collation process was nearly complete before the EC abruptly announced the rerun, a move she described as being in “bad faith.”

“I will never accept this rerun, but I dare them to go ahead with this election—and from A to Z, everybody will clap for me. The constituents love me and voted for me, and that is why I won the election,” she said.

Nana Akua also vowed that the NPP would resist any attempts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to overturn what she believes is the legitimate will of the people. She accused the EC of setting a dangerous precedent.

“The person who has to come from Tamale to vote—where will he or she get money from? This is not good for democracy. We are setting a bad precedent, because in 2028, someone will cause mayhem, destroy ballot papers, and get away with it because we will consider a rerun,” she fumed.

The EC’s decision to schedule the rerun on July 11, 2025, comes after months of disputes over the authenticity of results from the December 7, 2024, election. The process has been marred by tensions and mutual accusations between Nana Akua and her main rival, Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC.
