Sulley Muntari criticizes GFA for overlooking Abedi Pele, others https://www.adomonline.com/sulley-muntari-criticizes-gfa-for-overlooking-abedi-pele-others/ Sun, 09 Feb 2025 22:25:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2502198

Former Black Stars midfielder Sulley Muntari has criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for sidelining football legend Abedi Pele.

The UEFA Champions League winner believes the GFA should involve iconic former players like Abedi Pele in key administrative roles to help revive Ghana’s struggling football sector.

In an interview with 3Sports, the former AC Milan and Inter Milan star questioned why Ghana’s football greats are not being utilized effectively.

“Let’s ask ourselves, where is Abedi Pele? Why isn’t Abedi coming around? Why is Tony Yeboah not coming around?” Muntari asked, emphasizing that these “triple legends” possess unmatched expertise.

“When Abedi Pele is in the system, you put him in the right place. I’m not talking about coaching,” he added.

Muntari’s remarks come at a time when Ghanaian football is facing major challenges, including the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and ongoing infrastructure issues.

Despite being a three-time African Player of the Year and a key figure in Ghana’s 1982 AFCON triumph, Abedi Pele has had little involvement in football administration—a situation Muntari believes must change.

He emphasized that it’s time for the country to work together and focus on rebuilding the sport.

“I think time changes in all aspects, and we are talking about three decades,” Pele told the media, as reported by Panafricafootball.

“So whatever it is, we shouldn’t look back; we should just look forward, work hard, and achieve whatever we want to achieve.

“What it takes to be a great football team or a great football nation is to work hard and put your house in order to make sure that you get results. That is all it takes to be a good team anywhere in the world.

“Football is one of the keys to ensuring that the teams and the country are united,” he added.

Asamoah Gyan’s manager fights Ayew family’s spokesperson over book launch https://www.adomonline.com/asamoah-gyans-manager-fights-ayew-familys-spokesperson-over-book-launch/ Wed, 04 May 2022 10:01:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2111045 Asamoah Gyan’s manager, Samuel Anim Addo, has clashed with the spokesperson of the Ayew Family, FiiFi Tackie, over the launch of the former Black Stars captain’s autobiography.

FiiFi Tackie, on Tuesday, April 3, released photos of Abedi Pele’s autobiography to dismiss the notion that Asamoah Gyan is the first Ghanaian footballer to issue an autobiography.

The former Olympique Marseille ace and the Champions League winner’s autobiography was written both in English and French long before Gyan planned to ink his into history according to Fiifi.

“The Maestro Abedi Ayew Pele’s Autobiography was written in 1992 in English and French versions. This is a copy of the French version,” FiiFi Tackie tweeted.

However, Anim Addo launched an attack on Fiifi Tackie as he claimed that the latter was trying to take the shine away from Gyan’s successful book launch.

Anim Addo, who is a Ghana Football Association [GFA] Executive Council member in a reply on Twitter said he does not understand why Fiifi Tackie was staging a war for Abedi Pele just because he cannot stand the name Asamoah Gyan.

Asamoah Gyan’s book titled the ‘LeGyanDary’ was successfully launched with Ghana President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and many football stars in attendance.

I did not play for Olympique Marseille because of nepotism – Jordan Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/i-did-not-play-for-olympique-marseille-because-of-nepotism-jordan-ayew/ Wed, 16 Sep 2020 17:20:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=1855102 Ghana international, Jordan Ayew, says he had to prove himself before he was given the chance to play for Olympique Marseille.

The 28-year-old forward and his elder brother, Andre Ayew both played for the Ligue 1 giants before moving to England.

Ayew joined Marseille as a trainee in 2006. He signed a three-year professional contract with Marseille in 2009.

Jordan Ayew made his debut for the senior team on December 16, 2009, in a league match, scoring the equaliser against Lorient. Marseille went on to win the match 2–1.

Ayew followed in his father’s footsteps in signing for Marseille, but suspicions of nepotism were never too far away.

But the Crystal Palace forward says he had to prove himself before joining the team.

“Some people thought that I was only at Marseille because of my dad,” he told Daily Mail.

“I had to prove myself, to show everyone that I deserve to be where I am today.

‘In Ghana as well, when I got called up for the national team they used to say it was just because of my dad. But it is positive for me. I like it when people talk. It gives me energy and motivates me,” he added.

Following 198 senior appearances for Marseille, Sochaux and Lorient, Ayew found himself in the Premier League in 2015, signing for Aston Villa for £8million.

He finished that season as Villa’s top scorer but suffered relegation. He returned to the top flight 12 months later, only to suffer the same fate with Swansea in 2018.

Jordan scored a total of 22 goals for Olympique Marseille.

Abedi Pele slams former Marseille president over HIV claims https://www.adomonline.com/abedi-pele-slams-former-marseille-president-hiv-claims/ Wed, 26 Jul 2017 18:01:14 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=333681 Former Marseille star Abedi Ayew Pele says ex-club president Bernard Tapie may have overstepped his boundaries with his antics to sign him in 1987.
Tapie, in a recent interview, revealed how he scuppered the playmaker’s proposed move to Monaco by conspiring with an official of Les Monegasques to declare the Ghanaian HIV positive ahead of his medical to kill off Monaco’s interest, making way for Marseille to snap up the then Mulhouse man.
“I was completely zoned out with regards to that decision by whilom Olympique Marseille president Bernard Tapie,” Abedi told Kasapa FM.
“I was totally oblivious when it comes to that issue but he went too far. “I feel he overstepped his boundaries if his real intention was to ward off competition from rivals.
“I am very glad the truth has been revealed now, making whatever was said impertinent.”
Ayew went on to achieve great things with Marseille, famously winning the Champions League with the side in 1993. He also won two French topflight titles – in 1991 and 1992.

Most skillful player: George Weah picks Okocha over Abedi Pele https://www.adomonline.com/skillful-player-george-weah-picks-okocha-abedi-pele/ Thu, 20 Jul 2017 09:24:32 +0000 http://35.232.176.128/ghana-news/?p=313991 Former world’s best player, George Oppong Weah believes ex-Nigerian international Austin Jay Jay Okocha is more skillful player than Ghana’s Abedi Pele.
According to the former AC Milan great, he came nowhere to the Nigerian in terms of being artful with the ball at his feet despite his revered status in world football.
“Abedi is a strong player, he’s a creative player but Jay Jay is more skillful. Even me, Jay Jay has more techniques than me. All the things that Jay Jay does on the field, we don’t even do one percent of it. So Jay Jay is a legend when it comes to that; he is very creative, he is very smart and he knows how to do tricks,” Oppong Weah who is contesting to be Liberia’s next President told Bola Ray on Starr Chat Wednesday.
He added: “For me I don’t do tricks, I will score a good goal and when I am squeezed up, I know how to run around. But to put the ball on the ground and play with it, I give it to Jay Jay; he is an entertainer.”
Okocha, who garnered 75 caps for the Super Eagles of Nigeria during his illustrious career never won the African Player of Year award, becoming arguably the best player never to win the award despite coming second twice in 1998.

The Black Stars brushed Ethiopia aside with five goals without reply last week and the former African Player of the Year is urging the team not to drop the momentum in subsequent games.

“For now, we do not have to jubilate so much because things go so fast in football,” Abedi warned.

“We have other matches to play in the qualifiers. Even though the countries we will face [Kenya and Sierra Leone] are not as strong as expected, we will still face them and those matches will have to be played nonetheless. It is always good to have such a start but we have to prepare [for the rest of the qualifiers] adequately,” he noted.

The Black Stars will continue the Group F qualifiers against Kenya in March 2018 before facing the Leone Stars later in September.
