Inaugurated on Wednesday, November 26, the committee will guide Ghana’s roadmap to next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Debrah emphasized that Abedi Pele’s appointment brings practical expertise, not just symbolic value.

“We are not only trying to operate in abstract. If for nothing else, he [Abedi Pele] has played on the international platform and has the experience to share on how best we can present our country on the global stage,” he said.

Ghana enters the 2026 World Cup with renewed determination after failing to progress from the group stage in Qatar. The four-time African champions, seeded in Pot 4, will learn their group-stage opponents on December 5.

The third edition of Africa’s largest school’s football competition will be staging its Continental Finals in Accra, Ghana from 23-26 April, 2025, where the defending champions, six Zonal Qualifiers and hosts Ghana, will contest for the honour of being crowned African champions.

In line with CAF’s broader strategic approach to youth football development, the governing body of African football has secured seven African football greats to give guidance and support to the aspiring football talents.

Clementine Toure (Cote d’Ivoire), Robert Kidiaba (DR Congo), Pele, Gyan, Adjoa Bayor (all Ghana), Dlamini (South Africa) and Kareem Haggui (Tunisia) are the seven African football legends invited by CAF to share their knowledge and support to the participating players, who are all in the Under-15 age-group category.

The invited Legends will conduct training clinics, attend Capacity Building Workshops, host Training Sessions and offer encouragement and support pre and post the matches.

Of the seven, Gyan, Dlamini and Kidiaba will be making a return to the Continental Finals after giving guidance and support at the 2022 and 2024 editions.

Sharing his excitement ahead of the start of the tournament, Ghanaian legend Gyan lauded CAF’s innovative approach to the development of African football.

“The CAF African Schools Football Championship is undoubtedly one of CAF’s most critical competitions that supports football development. African football has scaled to great heights in recent years thanks to CAF’s efforts to develop African football.

“I am glad to see that such progress is supported by a strong foundation in this tournament, which is not only a launch pad for talent, but a unique gathering of talented youngsters for an opportunity to play competitive international football that is supported by education,” said Gyan.

All seven legends will be at the Official Draw of the competition on Monday, 21 April in Accra, where participating teams will be drawn into their groups of two in both the boys and girls U-15 divisions.

In a video capturing the incident, the three-time African Player of the Year, who occasionally serves as the club’s head coach, was seen in a heated confrontation with a player following a costly mistake.

The 1982 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner expressed visible frustration, attributing the error to a sense of complacency within the team.

The mishap occurred during a session where Nania FC was leading 4-0, a scenario Abedi believed led to a lapse in focus.

Abedi sternly cautioned the player, emphasizing that such mistakes could have serious consequences in competitive matches.

Despite the fiery exchange, Nania FC remains focused on their ultimate goal of promotion to the Ghana Premier League.

Currently ranked fourth in Division One League Zone 3 with 22 points from 11 matches, the team is gearing up for a crucial clash against league leaders Hohoe United on Saturday.

The two arch-rivals are set to face off in a two-legged tie later this month.

Ahead of the crucial games, the Black Galaxies played two preparatory matches, including a clash against Abedi Pele’s Nania FC and a dominant 5-0 victory over Northern City, a second-tier side, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Accra.

Following these friendlies, Abedi Pele offered his endorsement of the team’s efforts.

“It has been a pleasure for me to have this honour to play against you people today,” Abedi Pele said.

“What I have discovered is you have a strong team, strong physically, technically wonderful. So for me, the future is in the making, and the future of Ghana football is in the making.

The legendary midfielder emphasized the importance of national pride and determination in the team’s success.

“The reason is, when you are born in this country and you are playing for the national team, the bond, the hunger to succeed the courage, the determination is paramount. You try to do your possible best and that is what I’m seeing now. Not only physically strong but tactically well organized.

“It’s a very good pleasure for my team to have this experience to play against you people,” he added.

Ghana will host the first leg of the qualifiers on December 22 at the Accra Sports Stadium, while the second leg is scheduled for December 28 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria.

The winner of the tie will secure a spot in the CHAN 2024 tournament, set to take place from February 1 to February 28, 2025, across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The three-time Africa Footballer of the Year’s remarks come after the Black Stars’ disappointing failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The team finished bottom of Group F with just three points and no wins.

With local football struggling to gain the necessary attention and support, Pele—who won the 1982 AFCON title with the Black Stars—believes that past generations cannot be compared to the current situation.

He emphasized that it’s time for the country to work together and focus on rebuilding the sport.

“I think time changes in all aspects, and we are talking about three decades,” Pele told the media, as reported by Panafricafootball.

“So whatever it is, we shouldn’t look back; we should just look forward, work hard, and achieve whatever we want to achieve.

“What it takes to be a great football team or a great football nation is to work hard and put your house in order to make sure that you get results. That is all it takes to be a good team anywhere in the world.

“Football is one of the keys to ensuring that the teams and the country are united,” he added.

During his visit, the Champions League winner with Olympique Marseille shared words of encouragement and offered his blessings to the team, inspiring them to give their best on the field.

Asante Kotoko expressed their gratitude for the visit, stating on social media, “African and World football legend, Abedi Ayew Pele, offered his support and blessings to the team during our last training session ahead of our game with Legon Cities. It was a pleasure, Icon.”

The match, scheduled for Wednesday, October 30, will kick off at 15:00 GMT at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Legon Cities FC is especially motivated to secure a win, as they look to climb out of the relegation zone with a strong performance.

His call is in wake of the persistent criticism they faced following Ghana’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Speaking on Accra-based on Peace FM, Mr Jacobs said if he were in Abedi Ayew Pele’s position, he would advise his sons to quit the Black Stars.

“If I were Abedi Pele, I’d advise my children not to continue playing for the Black Stars. Words are powerful. My advice to Ghanaians, in politics, in sports, and in religion: words are very, very powerful” he stressed.

The Ayew brothers represented Ghana in the Ivory Coast, where the team failed to secure a victory, resulting in their elimination from the tournament.

Ghana’s AFCON journey ended with a 2-2 draw against Mozambique in the final group game, surrendering a two-goal lead. Jordan Ayew netted both goals from penalty kicks.

Andre Ayew came off the bench and equalled Rigobert Song’s AFCON record for the most games played (36).

Ghana’s elimination means the team has suffered a back-to-back AFCON exit at the group phase.

Pele, who is an African Cup of Nations (AFCON) winner in 1982 is regarded as one of the best players to have ever played for the senior national team and to have emerged from Africa.

His exploits saw him win laurels for clubs and country with the famous one happening with Olympique Marseille when they lifted the UEFA Champions League in 1993 beating Italian side, AC Milan.

Pele was also named the African Player of The Year three times during his playing days.

Mr Nyantakyi speaking in an interview unequivocally said the former Real Tamale United (RTU) and Al Sadd attacker remains his greatest Ghanaian player of all time.

“Abedi Pele was just brilliant and the likes of Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah and Sulley Muntari will all agree,” he said in an interview on Starr FM.

“I use to read about him in the papers and one day, I heard he was coming to play a game in Tamale and travelled miles away to watch and he left an indelible ink in my mind. Abedi Pele was just a superb player,” he added.

Jordan and Andre have been criticized over the years by several football fans with some calling for their exclusion from the team.

The two have been playing for the Black Stars for over a decade and are among the relied-upon senior players in the team.

Reacting to this, Abedi Pele said he suffered the same fate as his sons whiles playing for the senior national team.

However, the three-time African Footballer of the Year said he has no qualms about that.

Abedi Pele noted that, his sons, Jordan and Andre beings humans will make mistakes.

But, the 1993 Champions League winner with Marseille said they correct their wrongs and play their hearts out for Ghana.

The 59-year-old was part of the last group of Black Stars to win the Africa Cup of Nations 41- years-ago in Libya.

Ghana, four times African champions last lifted the prestigious trophy in 1982 in Libya.

The Black Stars have however come close of ending the trophy jinx in 1992, 2010 and 2015 but lost to Ivory Coast twice and Egypt respectively.

In an interview, the three-time African Footballer of the Year winner Ghana has a chance of winning the 34th edition of the tournament next year.

“Well, we will win,” he told Vision 1 FM. 

“There will be our chances. We’ve been to finals three times and I think our chance will be maybe this time,” he added.

The Black Stars has been paired with Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique in Group B of the AFCON tournament.

The tournament has been scheduled to kick off from January 13 to February 11.

Ayew was on the scoresheet on Tuesday as the Black Stars recorded a 3-1 victory over Liberia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Stepping onto the pitch as a substitute for Ernest Nuamah in the 62nd minute, Ayew find the back of the net on the 82nd minute.

This accomplishment propels him beyond his father, Abedi Pele, in the all-time goal scoring record for the Black Stars.

Ayew now boast of 20 goals joint with Sulley Muntari, Mohammed Polo and Wilberforce Mfum, a testament to his exceptional skill and unwavering dedication on the field. His father, Abedi Pele, concluded his illustrious career with 19 goals.

Abedi Pele tallied 19 goals in 73 appearances before retiring, while Jordan Ayew has notched 20 goals in 92 appearances.

Jordan is also now four goals behind his brother and Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew.

In addition to this milestone, Jordan Ayew now stands as Ghana’s fourth-most capped player.

During the event, Abedi Pele had the pleasure of meeting his grandson, Liam Ayew, the first son of Jordan Ayew.

The meeting was captured in a touching video that circulated on YouTube. Abedi Pele looked stylish in a black Balmain T-shirt, reflecting his timeless elegance.

As he arrived at the match venue, Abedi Pele warmly greeted familiar faces like Anthony Baffoe and other acquaintances. However, when he came face to face with Liam, his grandson, he couldn’t contain his joy. Abedi embraced the young boy in a big hug, creating a beautiful moment of grandfatherly love.

Pele is Olympique Marseille legend, having won the Champions League and other trophies.

Despite his father’s legendary status, Jordan insists he has always aimed to prove himself on the field.

According to him, he remained unaffected by the comparisons.

“I grew up [being known as Abedi’s son] so it didn’t really affect me,” Jordan told Crystal Palace’s club website.

“My dad always said: ‘The football doesn’t lie. If you are not good, everyone will see you are not good. You just need to prove people wrong on the pitch.

“That is what I have been trying to do since I was a child, to show I have my own qualities and I can be an important person to the country and the community,” he added.

Having started his career at Marseille, the same club where his father achieved iconic status, Ayew has now made his mark in the Premier League.

He holds the record for the most goals by a Ghanaian player in Premier League history, with an impressive tally of 33 goals.

Last season, Ayew reached a significant milestone, scoring his 100th career goal. Among those goals, 19 have been for the Ghana national team. Since his debut in 2010, he has displayed consistency, making over 90 appearances for his country.

Ghana’s U-23 side booked a place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] following a win over Algeria.

The FC Nordjaelland attacker put in a splendid performance to help the Black Meteors secure qualification for the tournament that will be hosted in Morocco in June.

Nuamah provided an assist as Abdul Fatawu Issahaku scored the winning goal in the final round of qualifiers against Algeria, resulting in a 2-1 aggregate victory for the Black Meteors.

With his impressive performance, Nuamah has caught the eye of Abedi Pele, who has high hopes for the young player’s future.

Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer, Asamoah Gyan has also tipped the 19-year-old for greatness following his impressive performance at the Baba Yara Stadium.

The U-23 AFCON will also be used as a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Olympics men’s football tournament in Paris, France.

Atsu was trapped in a rubble following an earthquake that struck Turkey last week that has claimed over 46,000 lives.

After 12 days of intense search, the 31-year-old was confirmed dead by his club, Hatayspor and his agent after he was discovered on Saturday morning.

The mortal remains of the former Chelsea and Newcastle United winger arrived in the country on Sunday evening.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, government officials, and some members of the Atsu family, and Ghana Football Association officials were all at the Kotoka International Airport to receive the lifeless body.

However, on Monday, Abedi Pele, who is a legend of the country together with his family, visited the family of Atsu in Accra.

“We commiserate with the family of our late brother Christian Atsu. At the family house. Rest well, Christian!!,” the Champions League winner with Olympique Marseille tweeted.

Atsu is famously remembered for emerging as the best of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Equatorial Guinea.

He was also a member of the Black Stars squad that featured at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Atsu joined Hatayaspor in September of last year, and just hours before the natural disaster, he scored his first goal for the club on Sunday, February 5.

This comes hours after Pele’s death.

The photo was taken during Pele’s visit to Ghana on May 8, 1971.

The football legends were both spotted in black suits and were in a hearty conversation amidst broad smiles.

Pele died on Thursday, December 29, 2022, aged 82.

Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento, he is credited with scoring a world record 1,281 goals in 1,363 appearances during a 21-year career, including 77 goals in 92 matches for his country.

The only player to win the World Cup three times, lifting the trophy in 1958, 1962 and 1970, Pele was named Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000.

He had been suffering from kidney and prostate problems in recent years.

Pele had surgery to remove a tumour from his colon in September 2021 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, after the tumour was detected in routine tests.

He was readmitted to the hospital in late November 2022, until his demise.

The Santos legend was confirmed dead at the age of 82 on Thursday in hs native country.

He was admitted to hospital three weeks ago in Brazil after his cancer progressed and he “required greater care related to renal and cardiac dysfunctions”.

Abedi Pele was given the nickname “Pelé” due to his ability in football, which evoked comparisons to the Brazilian legend Pele.

Over the course of a 21-year career, he is credited with scoring a world-record 1,281 goals in 1,363 games, including 77 goals in 92 international games.

Pele was selected as Fifa’s Player of the Century in 2000. Pele is the only player to have won the World Cup three times, taking home the trophy in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

It is with great sadness that I learnt of the passing of my friend and mentor, Edson Arantes do Nascimento,

the greatest footballer to ever play the game.

Pele, as he was affectionately known, was a global icon who symbolised the beautiful game of football. He inspired millions of generational kids in his native Brazil and across the globe.

Personally, I was immensely inspired by his greatness, and to be likened to him and bear his iconic name throughout my playing time and beyond, is an absolute privilege and a priceless honour.

Pele is synonymous with football, and football will never forget its king.

Despite winning laurels on the continent and in Europe, Pele never had the chance but excelled for the national team.

With the 2022 FIFA World Cup ongoing, Abedi Pele has disclosed that his two sons Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew are fulfilling his Black Stars dream.

“A dream was to be at the @FIFAWorldCup but didn’t get the chance back then! Now my 2 boys are there to make my dream and Ghana ?? as a nation come on. #BringBackTheLove #BlackStars . Get in well. Alhamdulillah,” the Black Stars great said in a post on Twitter.

Andre will lead the team as the skipper for the side while Jordan Ayew is expected to play a key role for the team in Qatar.

Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be one of five African countries representing the continent.

Ghana, who are in Group H will open their campaign against Portugal on Thursday, November 24 at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Four days later, the Black Stars return to action with a clash with South Korea at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Ghana will wrap up their group stage adventure with their much-anticipated encounter with Uruguay at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.

The former Barcelona forward, who was in Accra over the weekend as part of the Qatar Legacy Ambassadorial role, speaking in an interview named Pele as his favourite player as well.

However, he added that he likes a lot of African players but Abedi Pele tops his list of Ghanaian footballers.

“Abedi Pele, one of the best ever,” Eto’o said on TV3 when asked about Ghanaian players.

Eto’o gave a long list of African footballers he admires including current players such as Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

Abedi Pele is revered on the continent for his exploits in the late eighties and the early nineties, where he won the African Player of the Year three times in a row. 

The former RTU forward dominated Europe in the 80s and 90s having won the Champions League with Olympique Marseille.

Pele was part of Ghana’s squad that lost the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations against Ivory Coast.

The photos, which captured them serving family goals, also included throwbacks with their children.

The visuals were to mark their 35th marriage anniversary on Tuesday, August 9, 2022.

The former Olympique Marseille player got married to Maha in 1987 while he was playing in France.

Abedi Pele and Maha are parents of football stars, Dede Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Rahim Ayew and a beautiful daughter Imani Ayew. 

Black Stars defender, Alexander Djiku, was adjudged the Men’s Footballer of the Year at the Ghana Football Awards on Saturday, July 2.

The Strasbourg centre-back beat competition from Thomas Partey, Daniel Amartey, Jojo Wollacott and Mohammed Salisu to scoop the prize.

Ghana Premier League champions, Asante Kotoko, dominated the awards with the head coach, Prosper Ogum Narteh, and CEO, Nana Yaw Amponsah, leading the charge.

The Porcupine Warriors also won the Team of the Year award.

In the Odartey Lamptey Future Star category, AS Roma’s Felix Afena Gyan emerged the winner ahead of Bechem United’s Clinton Duodu.

FiiFi Tackie, on Tuesday, April 3, released photos of Abedi Pele’s autobiography to dismiss the notion that Asamoah Gyan is the first Ghanaian footballer to issue an autobiography.

The former Olympique Marseille ace and the Champions League winner’s autobiography was written both in English and French long before Gyan planned to ink his into history according to Fiifi.

“The Maestro Abedi Ayew Pele’s Autobiography was written in 1992 in English and French versions. This is a copy of the French version,” FiiFi Tackie tweeted.

However, Anim Addo launched an attack on Fiifi Tackie as he claimed that the latter was trying to take the shine away from Gyan’s successful book launch.

Anim Addo, who is a Ghana Football Association [GFA] Executive Council member in a reply on Twitter said he does not understand why Fiifi Tackie was staging a war for Abedi Pele just because he cannot stand the name Asamoah Gyan.

Asamoah Gyan’s book titled the ‘LeGyanDary’ was successfully launched with Ghana President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and many football stars in attendance.

He played for several European clubs and found his fame in the French Ligue 1 with Lille and Marseille, the latter where he won the UEFA Champions League in 1993, among other titles.

1. Abedi Pele provided one assist during the 1992/93 Champions League campaign, it was the assist to Basile Boli that helped Marseille lift the Champions League trophy.
2. Abedi Pele won two French Division 1 (now Ligue 1) titles with Marseille.
3. Abedi Pele was voted African Footballer of the Year three (3) times during his career; only two players have won the award more times: Samuel Eto’o and Yaya Toure.
4. On 4th March 2004, Abedi Pele was named in the FIFA 100 list. FIFA 100 is a list of Pelé’s choice of the “greatest living footballers”. Pele was the only Ghanaian on the list.
5. Abedi Pele scored five goals in the African Cup of Nations during his National Team career.
6. Abedi Pele scored six goals during Marseille’s 1992/93 season, he finished as the 4th highest goalscorer for Marseille.

The soft-spoken gaffer guided the Wonder Club to finish 6th in the just ended 2020/21 Ghana Premier League season.

According to him, his experience as a coach began with his relationship with Division One League side, Nania FC, when he was appointed as the head coach.

Speaking in an interview, Walker acknowledged the efforts of clubs he has worked with over the past years especially with Nania FC where he won the MTN FA cup title in 2011 beating Asante Kotoko in the final.

“Nania FC and Abedi Pele gave me the biggest platform as far as my coaching career is concerned,” he told Asempa FM on the Ultimate Sports Show.

“I am grateful to the legend [Abedi Pele]. We are still in touch and I know Nania will one day secure a Premier League qualification,” the Black Stars ‘B’ coach added.

After guiding Great Olympics to maintain their Premier League status, Annor Walker has been linked to Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC ahead of the 2021/22 football season.

Imani, the only daughter of Mr Ayew, turned 23 on Sunday, June 6, 2021.

In celebration of her birthday, she decided to take to social media to display photos of her fun-filled day with family and loved ones.

The photos, sighted on her Instagram page, revealed Imani to be a very beautiful and classy-looking young lady.

In the photos, Imani was spotted in an orange outfit as she poses in a garden with peach and white balloon backdrop.

Others saw her in a pose with her brother, Andre Dede Ayew as well as her mum.

Another spotted Imani pose for a group picture with the guests who came to celebrate with her.

The photos have warmed hearts on social media and have also attracted goodwill messages.

According to the Olympique Marseille legend, he is the owner of Izwe Savings and Loans, a microfinance company that has been in existence since 2011.

Speaking to the French ambassador to Ghana, Anne Sophie, he said his decision to set up a microfinance business was to lessen the burden on the ordinary Ghanaian.

“I have done so many things but my character is very calm, I am always in the dark and I believe in that,” he said.

“I have been in the country working very hard, I have a microfinance company which is very huge and number one in the country called Izwe Loans.

“We give loans to teachers, military, police to support them in their daily lives.

“They have to send their children to school and so we give them these loans to manage and buy things for their children,” he stated.

Pele is one of the best footballers to have ever emerged from the country. He was part of the 1982 squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations.

He also won the Champions League with Marseille and also emerged as Africa’s best player of the year four times.

The 28-year-old forward and his elder brother, Andre Ayew both played for the Ligue 1 giants before moving to England.

Ayew joined Marseille as a trainee in 2006. He signed a three-year professional contract with Marseille in 2009.

Jordan Ayew made his debut for the senior team on December 16, 2009, in a league match, scoring the equaliser against Lorient. Marseille went on to win the match 2–1.

Ayew followed in his father’s footsteps in signing for Marseille, but suspicions of nepotism were never too far away.

But the Crystal Palace forward says he had to prove himself before joining the team.

“Some people thought that I was only at Marseille because of my dad,” he told Daily Mail.

“I had to prove myself, to show everyone that I deserve to be where I am today.

‘In Ghana as well, when I got called up for the national team they used to say it was just because of my dad. But it is positive for me. I like it when people talk. It gives me energy and motivates me,” he added.

Jordan’s father, Abedi ‘Pele’ Ayew is the first African footballer to win the Champions League in its current format, with Marseille in 1993 and many laurels with the club.

Following 198 senior appearances for Marseille, Sochaux and Lorient, Ayew found himself in the Premier League in 2015, signing for Aston Villa for £8million. 

He finished that season as Villa’s top scorer but suffered relegation. He returned to the top flight 12 months later, only to suffer the same fate with Swansea in 2018.

Jordan scored a total of 22 goals for Olympique Marseille.

Abedi Pele, his father is a legend of the French Ligue side.

The Black Stars brushed Ethiopia aside with five goals without reply last week and the former African Player of the Year is urging the team not to drop the momentum in subsequent games.

“For now, we do not have to jubilate so much because things go so fast in football,” Abedi warned.

“We have other matches to play in the qualifiers. Even though the countries we will face [Kenya and Sierra Leone] are not as strong as expected, we will still face them and those matches will have to be played nonetheless. It is always good to have such a start but we have to prepare [for the rest of the qualifiers] adequately,” he noted.

The Black Stars will continue the Group F qualifiers against Kenya in March 2018 before facing the Leone Stars later in September.

The 3-time African footballer of the year is of the view that Ghana Football Association (GFA) handed him the job because they have confidence in him hence called on all and sundry to support Kwesi Appiah to deliver.

“I wish him well. The people who appointed him believes he can do the job that’s why they appointed him. All we can do now is to back him to succeed”. The legend said.
