Before Ghana’s Matchday 7 to 10 fixtures in the World Cup qualifiers, Mr Adams announced the team’s budget, a decision that sparked mixed reactions across the football community.

Some critics blamed the public disclosure for distracting the players, even suggesting it contributed to the Black Stars’ 1-1 draw against Chad.

Responding to the backlash, Dr Abbey backed the Minister’s transparency, describing the criticism as unnecessary.

He emphasised that the players remained focused and unbothered by the development.

“I was in the Black Stars camp, and no player complained about the Sports Minister reading out the budget before games,” he told Sporty FM.

“I don’t see the big deal in the Minister’s decision,” Dr Abbey added.

The Black Stars, who recently sealed qualification for their fifth FIFA World Cup, will learn their group stage opponents when the draw is held on December 5.

Otto Addo credits team unity for Black Stars’ World Cup qualification https://www.adomonline.com/otto-addo-credits-team-unity-for-black-stars-world-cup-qualification/ Tue, 14 Oct 2025 12:26:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2588343 Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has attributed the team’s successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to a calmer, more focused atmosphere within the squad during the campaign.

Following the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Addo has steered the national team back to the global stage.

Ghana secured their place at the World Cup with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Speaking to the media after the match, Addo highlighted the key differences between the AFCON and World Cup qualifying campaigns.

“To say it very simply, we scored more goals [in the World Cup qualifiers than the AFCON qualifiers], we were more mature, we were more clinical in our finishes,” he said.

“There were less distractions also, but I do think we’ve now come together as a united team. If you have unity, everything is easy,” Addo added.

At 49, Addo has made history as the first coach to lead the Black Stars to consecutive World Cup tournaments, having also guided the team during the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Ghana, preparing for its fifth World Cup appearance, will learn its group-stage opponents when the official draw takes place on December 5.

2026 WCQ: Otto Addo anticipates tough game against Comoros https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-otto-addo-anticipates-tough-game-against-comoros/ Sat, 11 Oct 2025 23:26:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587454 Ghana head coach Otto Addo has urged caution ahead of the Black Stars’ final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match, describing Comoros as a disciplined and dangerous opponent.

The decisive clash takes place on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off set for 19:00 GMT. Ghana need just a single point to secure their place at next year’s Mundial.

Speaking to the media ahead of the fixture, Addo highlighted the threat posed by the island nation.

“They’ve been doing good work over the years, and we in Ghana have felt it before. Especially up front, they are very strong. It’s going to be a difficult match.”

Addo also praised the tactical acumen of Comoros’ coach, noting the team’s evolution and versatility.

“They have a really good coach who understands the game and plays with different systems. They are difficult to beat,” he noted.

Despite the warning, Addo remains confident in Ghana’s preparation.

“If we have the right mentality like against Mali, we will beat them,” he said. “We’ve analysed their strengths and weaknesses, and we know what we want to do.”

A victory or draw will see Ghana make their fifth World Cup appearance, having previously competed in Germany (2006), South Africa (2010), Brazil (2014), and Qatar (2022).

The decisive clash is scheduled for 19:00 GMT at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Ghana will need just a single point to seal qualification for next year’s tournament, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The four-time African champions approach the game in high spirits after a dominant 5–0 victory over the Central African Republic in their previous fixture.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Addo made it clear that his priority is the team’s performance rather than personal accolades, as he aims to guide Ghana to back-to-back World Cup appearances.

“I’m not thinking about records. It’s always about teamwork. Full focus to win, and that is what I’m thinking about,” Addo said.

“In the last match, the players did very well, and we are hoping to execute our plan in the Comoros game very well.

“That is the focus. We will do everything to secure the qualification on Sunday,” he added.

Ghana are aiming to book their fifth World Cup appearance, having previously featured in Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, and Qatar 2022.

The 49-year-old, who masterminded Ghana’s qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after a dramatic playoff triumph over Nigeria, is on the brink of leading the nation to yet another global showpiece, which will be co-hosted in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

“I’m not thinking about records. It’s always about teamwork. Full focus to win, and that is what I’m thinking about,” Addo said at the pre-match press conference on Saturday.

“In the last match, the players did very well, and we are hoping to execute our plan in the Comoros game very well.

“That is the focus. We will do everything to secure the qualification on Sunday,” he added.

Ghana need just a point to book their ticket to the 2026 tournament after their dominant 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic in Morocco.

That result propelled the Black Stars to the top of Group I with 22 points, three ahead of Madagascar.

The decisive encounter against Comoros will take place on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off set for 19:00 GMT.

A positive result would see Ghana qualify for their fifth World Cup, following previous appearances in 2006 (Germany), 2010 (South Africa), 2014 (Brazil), and 2022 (Qatar).

The Black Stars head into the decisive encounter just one point away from securing qualification for their fifth World Cup appearance in the last six editions, following their emphatic victory over the Central African Republic on Matchday 9.

Despite needing only a draw to advance, Addo insists his team will play for all three points.

“This is where everybody should show how professional they are. I’ve seen a lot in football, a lot. I once led with my team 4-0, and we lost 6-4,” the 49-year-old said.

“In football, anything can happen. We’re not done until we’re done. I think we want to end this qualification with a victory. This is for sure,” he added.

Ghana currently sit three points clear of Madagascar ahead of the final round of matches.

Ghana will host Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars have suffered two previous losses to the island nation, first during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, and again in Moroni in Matchday 2 of the current qualifiers.

With Ghana needing just a single point to secure World Cup qualification, Afriyie believes the team will approach the game with revenge in mind.

“I am 100% sure that the technical team will go for revenge against Comoros,” Afriyie told Asempa FM’s Sports Nite.

He also commended the progress within the squad, noting: “I have seen improvement in the Black Stars.”

Ghana currently leads Group I with 22 points, and the decisive encounter is scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT.

The Minister’s comments come as the Black Stars prepare for a crucial encounter that could seal their qualification for next year’s tournament.

Ghana has suffered back-to-back defeats to Comoros, first at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon and later in the second Group I qualifying match in Moroni.

Speaking ahead of the tie in an interview with Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Adams urged the players to approach the game with determination but also with tactical discipline.

“On Sunday, it is a revenge against Comoros. We have lost to them twice, and that was during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and the second game of the qualifiers in Moroni, and so we need to win on Sunday.

“But then also, we have to tread cautiously against Comoros not to think that we have goal advantage over the teams, but the point is that we must get revenge against them.”

The Buem Constituency Member of Parliament also appealed to fans to fill the Accra Sports Stadium and rally behind the team.

“I urge Ghanaians to come to the Accra Sports Stadium in their numbers to support the team,” he added.

Jordan Ayew: World Cup qualification an opportunity to restore Ghanaian pride https://www.adomonline.com/jordan-ayew-world-cup-qualification-an-opportunity-to-restore-ghanaian-pride/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 22:27:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586679 Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has described qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as an opportunity to restore national pride following Ghana’s failure to reach the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

For the first time in more than two decades, Ghana missed out on Africa’s premier tournament after failing to secure a single victory in the qualifiers.

The disappointment, however, has fueled the senior national team’s determination on the road to the World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico next year.

Ghana bolstered its chances with a commanding 5-0 victory over the Central African Republic in Wednesday’s Matchday 9 fixture at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknès in Morocco.

“I took this to heart because I wasn’t happy with how things went at the 2022 World Cup. Missing the AFCON was a huge disaster and disappointment for all of us,” he told 3Sports after the game, which was played at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknès in Morocco.

“We knew this World Cup was our only chance to redeem ourselves, so everyone gave everything.

“I’ve been with the national team for a long time, it’s a part of me, and I knew I had to step up,” he added.

Mohammed Salisu opened the scoring in the first half before Thomas Partey, Alexander Djiku, Jordan Ayew, and Kamaldeen Sulemana added goals to seal the emphatic win.

The victory keeps Ghana at the top of Group I with 22 points. The Black Stars will conclude their qualifiers against Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 19:00 GMT.

The Leicester City forward, who contributed both a goal and an assist, described the triumph as a demonstration of the squad’s renewed determination to rebound after missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking exclusively to Adom FM’s Sports Page 2, Ayew acknowledged the disappointment fans felt after the AFCON setback and urged continued unity and belief in the national team.

“I want to thank Ghanaians for their support and patience. Not qualifying for the AFCON was a disaster for everyone, so obviously this is the time for us to come back strong. I hope on Sunday they will come to the stadium and celebrate with us,” he said.

Ayew’s leadership both on and off the pitch was evident as the Black Stars delivered one of their most commanding performances in recent memory, bringing them within striking distance of a World Cup berth.

Ghana will host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

A win in that match will secure the Black Stars’ place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Ghana thrash Central African Republic to near 2026 World Cup qualification https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-thrash-central-african-republic-to-near-2026-world-cup-qualification/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 18:07:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586600 The Black Stars of Ghana took a giant step toward securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a resounding 5–0 victory over the Central African Republic (CAR) on Wednesday afternoon.

At the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco, head coach Otto Addo named a strong starting lineup featuring the return of winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who made his first start since recovering from injury.

Needing a win to stay on course for next summer’s global showpiece in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Ghana started cautiously as CAR launched two quick counterattacks in the opening minutes. However, the Black Stars’ defence remained solid, and both teams shared early spells of possession.

Ghana soon found their rhythm and began to pile pressure on the CAR backline. The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute when defender Mohammed Salisu rose highest to head home Mohammed Kudus’ corner.

Kudus came close to doubling the lead shortly after, but his effort was cleared off the line, while midfielder Kwasi Sibo, making only his second appearance for the national team, narrowly missed with a long-range strike.

The Black Stars maintained their dominance, controlling the tempo and possession for the remainder of the first half, which ended 1–0 in their favour.

Ghana resumed the second half with renewed intensity, and their efforts paid off when Thomas Partey fired home in the 52nd minute after a neat assist from Jordan Ayew.

The Central African Republic threatened briefly, coming close to a consolation in the 63rd minute, but their shot went wide. A minute later, Jordan Ayew received a yellow card following a heated exchange with a CAR player.

The Black Stars quickly reasserted control, extending their lead to 3–0 through Alexander Djiku, who headed in another Ayew corner in the 68th minute. Jordan Ayew then turned scorer himself three minutes later, capitalising on a defensive lapse to make it 4–0.

Otto Addo introduced several substitutes, Elisha Owusu, Kamaldeen Sulemana, and Joseph Paintsil, replacing Antoine Semenyo, Partey, and Issahaku, to keep the momentum. Kamaldeen nearly added to the tally but saw his curling effort drift just wide.

In the 82nd minute, Kudus and Salisu made way for Prince Owusu and Jerome Opoku, and five minutes later, Ghana completed the rout. Kamaldeen Sulemana latched onto a Paintsil cross to slot home the fifth goal in the 87th minute.

The emphatic victory lifts Ghana to the top of Group I with 22 points. The Black Stars now need just a point against Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium to confirm their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match is set for later today at the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco, as part of Matchday 9 of the African qualifiers.

Forecasts indicate temperatures of around 28°C at kick-off — a climate Addo believes will help his players perform comfortably.

“I am happy that we don’t play in the afternoon,” he told the Ghana FA website.

“It’s more going late into the evening, so it’s good, and this is truly an advantage for us and easier for our players to adapt,” Addo added.

2026 WCQ: Central African Republic v Ghana preview https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-central-african-republic-v-ghana-preview/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 05:56:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586332 The Black Stars of Ghana are on the brink of securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as they prepare to face the Central African Republic (CAR) in their penultimate Group I fixture today, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes.

Kick-off is scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Ghana currently sits atop Group I with 19 points, three clear of second-placed Madagascar. A win over their already-eliminated opponents could see Otto Addo’s men take a decisive step toward their fifth World Cup appearance.

Match Preview

Victory on Wednesday would all but guarantee Ghana’s qualification, though the final confirmation could depend on results elsewhere — particularly in the clash between Madagascar and Comoros, which kicks off simultaneously.

Should Madagascar fail to beat Comoros, a Ghana win would officially seal their ticket to the 2026 Mundial.

The Black Stars have been impressive throughout the qualifiers, winning six of their eight matches. Their only setbacks came in a 1-0 loss to Comoros on Matchday 2 and a 1-1 draw with Chad in September. They bounced back strongly with a 1-0 victory over Mali in Accra, extending their tally to 17 goals — the highest in the group — while conceding just six.

Otto Addo’s side has shown consistency in 2024, registering four wins in six games (D1, L1). Facing a side with nothing to play for, the expectation is that Ghana will deliver another confident performance.

CAR, meanwhile, are battling for pride. The Les Fauves have endured a disappointing campaign, losing five of their last six matches across all competitions and failing to score in their most recent five outings.

Their only win in the qualifiers came in a 1-0 victory over Chad in June 2024. However, with 17 goals conceded — the second-most in the group — and an eight-match winless run (D3, L5), head coach Eloge Enza Yamissi’s men face a daunting task against the in-form Black Stars.

Qualification Scenarios

Ghana will officially qualify if:

  • They defeat CAR, and Madagascar fail to beat Comoros.
  • A draw between Madagascar and Comoros, combined with a Ghana win, would also confirm qualification.

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has expressed confidence in the team’s ability to finish the job.

“We are very close. The players have their destiny in their hands. They have done all the work and must add the finishing touch. They should go out, play their hearts out and get the win,” noted Gyan.

“Some games come with good pressure and keep you on your toes. This is one of those games. I feel there is a bit of pressure, but that is normal. Some of the players did it in 2022, and I am sure they can handle it.”

Team News

CAR coach Eloge Enza Yamissi has named a 23-man squad for their doubleheader against Ghana and Chad, retaining much of his previous selection. A 5-3-2 formation is expected, though Isaac Ngoma misses out. Louis Mafouta — the nation’s all-time top scorer with 16 goals — is set to lead the line alongside Moustapha Djimet.

For Ghana, Otto Addo has named a 24-man squad featuring the returning duo of Alidu Seidu and Fatawu Issahaku after lengthy injury layoffs.
The squad also includes key figures such as Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, and Mohammed Kudus, who netted his first goal for Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Antoine Semenyo, in fine form for Bournemouth with six Premier League goals, is expected to start in attack. Addo is likely to maintain his preferred 3-4-3 system, with Kudus, Ayew, and Semenyo forming the attacking trio.

Alexander Djiku, who scored the winner against Mali, should marshal the defence alongside Mohammed Salisu and Jonas Adjitey, while Benjamin Asare is expected to remain in goal.

Probable Lineups

Central African Republic:

Abimala, F. Yangoa, Gambor, Miambaye, Basse-Zokana; Beyissa, Oualengbe, Gusset, Yawanendji; Djimet, Mafouta

Ghana:

Asare, Salisu, Djiku, Opoku; Alidu, Mensah, Sibo, Partey; Semenyo, Ayew, Kudus

Prediction:

Central African Republic 0–2 Ghana

The Black Stars are expected to maintain their momentum and edge closer to another World Cup appearance with a composed display in Meknes.

2026 WCQ: It is normal – Otto Addo on pressure ahead of CAR encounter https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-it-is-normal-otto-addo-on-pressure-ahead-of-car-encounter/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 05:41:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586326 Ghana head coach Otto Addo says he remains calm under pressure as the Black Stars prepare to face the Central African Republic in their penultimate 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The four-time African champions will play the match at the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco today, October 8, as they look to secure a vital win and hope for favourable results elsewhere to seal qualification for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

“The so-called pressure that we have right now is normal,” Addo told reporters.

“When we are first and just two matches to go, it’s expected. The players are experienced enough. Surely, we have some young ones, but we also have experienced players who will guide them.”

The 47-year-old tactician added that scoring early could help ease the tension during the match.

“I’m just hoping that we can have an early goal — it will make things easier.”

Ghana currently sit top of Group I with 19 points, three ahead of Madagascar and four clear of Comoros. Addo emphasised the importance of maintaining stability in his squad as the qualifiers draw to a close.

“Consistency is the key to success. If you make too many changes, it’s difficult for the players to connect,” he said.

The Black Stars’ encounter against the Central African Republic kicks off at 16:00 GMT. They will conclude their qualifying campaign on Sunday, October 12, when they host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars face CAR today, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknès in Morocco, in their penultimate Group I qualifier.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Addo revealed that his squad is well-prepared and in high spirits ahead of the crucial encounter.

“We are in a comfortable position that we can look at ourselves and we want to win this game,” Addo said. “If we win this game, we have a high probability of qualifying for the World Cup. But this is just the first step.”

Addo emphasized the need for focus and defensive discipline throughout the 90 minutes, recalling lessons from their hard-fought victory over Chad.

“We have to fight defensively, especially to the last minute. I have a very good feeling that we can keep a clean sheet and score one or two goals.”

When asked about the prospect of becoming the first Ghanaian coach to guide the national team to two World Cups, Addo downplayed the personal milestone.

“I don’t think too much about myself; it’s about the team. We want to win this game tomorrow, and then we’ll see.”

Ghana currently lead Group I with 19 points, three ahead of second-placed Madagascar. The Black Stars will wrap up their qualifying campaign on Sunday, October 12, when they host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium.

2026 WCQ: Make yourselves and Ghana proud – Stephen Appiah urges Black Stars ahead of CAR game https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-make-yourselves-and-ghana-proud-stephen-appiah-urges-black-stars-ahead-of-car-game/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 05:12:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586321 Vice Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Stephen Appiah, has thrown his full support behind the team as the team prepares to face the Central African Republic (CAR) in their penultimate 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The decisive Matchday 9 encounter takes place today, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Ghana, who sit top of Group I, are aiming to secure qualification to next year’s World Cup, depending on results elsewhere in the group.

Addressing the players in camp ahead of the fixture, Appiah, who captained Ghana to its historic first World Cup appearance in 2006 and again in 2010, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rise to the occasion.

“As I watch the guys train, it reminds me of some of the biggest qualifiers we played, like against South Africa at FNB,” Appiah recalled. “It is a huge game for Ghana and for them too because the World Cup is massive.”

Appiah urged the players to stay calm and composed, emphasising focus over pressure.

“The players don’t need to put pressure on themselves. It is a game in their hands, and I am confident that at the end of the game, we are going to America,” he said.

Reflecting on Ghana’s previous outing against Chad, the former captain acknowledged areas that needed improvement but expressed belief that lessons had been learned.

“Against Chad, we were slowing the game from the start, but I think they have learnt their lessons now,” he observed.

With qualification within reach, Appiah called on the team to give their all for the nation.

“We believe in them, and I know they believe in themselves. They should do it for themselves and for mother Ghana.”

The Black Stars will return home after today’s match to wrap up their qualifying campaign against Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana, who currently top Group I, will face C.A.R. at the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

A win could all but secure the Black Stars’ place at next year’s World Cup, depending on results elsewhere in the group.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Addo warned his players against complacency despite the team’s recent good form.

“We were very happy with the result against Mali and we are taking this positive feeling into the C.A.R. game,” Addo said.

“It is always like that. Everybody knows what this game is about, and I hope we take this positive vibe into the game.”

Addo, however, was quick to remind his side of the dangers of underestimating their opponents, referencing their previous away draw against Chad, a result that exposed defensive weaknesses.

“Everything is in our hands, but I hope that we learnt the lesson from the last away game against Chad,” he emphasised.

“It is important that we stay focused and concentrated and not think we have already won because that is a big danger,” he added.

Following today’s encounter, the Black Stars will return to Accra to host Comoros on Sunday, October 12, in their final Group I match at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Addo said his team must carry their momentum from the Mali game into this decisive fixture while learning from past mistakes.

“At the end, we have worked together because it’s a team sport. Individuals can make a change, but the most important thing is to work together, work to our strengths and know how to respond when things go wrong,” the 49-year-old said.

He further reminded his players of the lessons from their last away fixture against Chad, where lapses in concentration almost derailed their efforts.

Ghana will face CAR on Wednesday, October 8, in their Matchday 9 2026 World Cup qualifier, before hosting Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, for their final group fixture.

Speaking ahead of the crucial encounter, Hayford stressed that success will be determined more by the team’s mental strength and commitment than tactics or reputation. He urged the players to give their all in what he described as a decisive test for Ghana’s World Cup ambitions.

“Beating Central African Republic (CAR) will depend on the Black Stars players. If they’re truly focused on qualifying us for the World Cup,” Hayford told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

The former Black Queens coach added that matches of this magnitude often come down to mental resilience and unity—qualities he believes are essential for securing a place at the 2026 tournament.

Ghana, four-time Africa Cup of Nations champions, are aiming for a fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, having previously competed in 2006 (Germany), 2010 (South Africa), 2014 (Brazil), and 2022 (Qatar).

The legendary striker, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, also spoke about the mental aspect of such decisive fixtures.

“Some games come with good pressure and keep you on your toes. This is one of those games. I feel there is a bit of pressure, but that is normal. Some of the players did it in 2022, and I am sure they can handle it,” he added.

The 25-year-old replaces Athletic Bilbao striker Iñaki Williams, who was forced to withdraw from the team after sustaining an injury during his side’s La Liga clash with Real Mallorca on Saturday.

Thomas-Asante, who has been in impressive form for Coventry in the English Championship, was initially omitted from the squad for the games against the Central African Republic and Comoros. However, Williams’ injury has opened the door for his return to the national team — his first since featuring in the Unity Cup in May.

The in-form attacker joined the Black Stars camp on Sunday ahead of their second training session scheduled for Monday, October 4.

Thomas-Asante has made a strong start to the 2025–26 campaign, scoring five goals and providing three assists in nine league appearances. He underlined his sharpness with a brace in Coventry’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

The Ghanaian forward has one goal in four senior appearances for the national team.

Ghana will take on the Central African Republic on Wednesday, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco, before hosting Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.

Addo, 49, has faced heightened scrutiny following inconsistent performances by the national team, prompting Sports Minister Kofi Adams to voice concerns about the coach’s tenure.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Agyemang Badu stressed that Addo should be given the opportunity to complete his current assignment before discussions about his future take centre stage.

“I’m not the one who appointed him, but every work each person is doing, they want to succeed. The coach, too, wants to succeed in his work with the Black Stars,” he said.

“I don’t think the stats show that he has done badly. There is more room for improvement. Let’s wait and play the two matches. There’s more time to deliberate on his future after,” he added.

Ghana currently tops Group I with 19 points and needs just four more to confirm its place at the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.

The Black Stars will travel to face the Central African Republic at Stade d’Honneur de Meknes on Wednesday, October 8, before returning home to host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 12 in their final group fixture.

Born in the southern French city of Aix-en-Provence, the goalkeeper appeared for France at various youth levels but recently switched his international allegiance to Algeria.

The 27-year-old is one of three goalkeepers named in Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic’s 26-man squad for the matches on 9 and 14 October.

Zidane, who is the second of four brothers, all of whom came through the Real Madrid academy, currently plays for Spanish second-tier side Granada.

He played two matches for Madrid and has La Liga experience at Rayo Vallecano, but dropped a level in 2022 to play for Eibar before heading to Andalusian club Granada in 2024.

Zidane’s paternal grandparents came from the Kabylie region of Algeria.

Zinedine Zidane scored twice for France in their 1998 World Cup final victory over Brazil, but was famously sent off for a headbutt in the 2006 final, which was won by Italy in a penalty shootout.

Algeria are currently top of Group G of African qualifying and are one win away from booking a place at next year’s World Cup in North and Central America.

Issahaku makes his comeback after nearly a year on the sidelines with an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

The 20-year-old has been in fine form for Leicester in the English Championship, convincing head coach Otto Addo of his readiness for international duty.

Seidu also rejoins the team after recovering from a long-term knee injury that has kept him out of action for almost 12 months.

The squad features exciting new additions, including OGC Nice forward Kojo Peprah Oppong, who earns his maiden senior call-up following an impressive campaign in Ligue 1.

The 21-year-old, a product of Attram De Visser Academy, has emerged as one of the brightest young prospects in French football.

Medeama SC midfielder Prince Owusu has also received his first invitation to the senior national team after a strong start to the Ghana Premier League season.

Ghana will face the Central African Republic on Wednesday, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco before returning home to host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.

2026 WCQ: GFA endorses $1.2m budget for Black Stars’ games against CAR and Comoros https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-gfa-endorses-1-2m-budget-for-black-stars-games-against-car-and-comoros/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 11:13:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584701 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has welcomed government’s approval of a $1.2 million budget to cover expenses for the Black Stars’ final round of 2026 World Cup qualifiers this month.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Buem, confirmed on Monday, September 29, that the allocation will cater for the team’s crucial fixtures against the Central African Republic and Comoros.

The breakdown includes $733,000 for the away clash in Casablanca on October 8 and $387,000 for the home tie in Accra on October 12.

Speaking to Woezor TV’s Arena, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum explained that the Association had submitted projected costs based on past experiences, leaving the Sports Ministry to finalise the figures.

“The budget the Ghana Football Association (GFA) sent to the Sports Ministry are the actuals. Everything we presented to the Ministry are estimates or projections, and that is based on experience, based on games that we play. Let us not forget that there are inconsistencies in terms of figures because we do not play at one venue,” Asante Twum said.

“During the September internal window, we played in Chad for the away game, and then we came back to Ghana to play against Mali. This time around, we are going to Morocco, so the expenses made against Chad will not be the same for the game against Central African Republic in Morocco in terms of feeding, hotel, internal rounds, cost of training facility and other things. Once we make those projections on empirical evidence, research, facts and historical antecedents, it is always up to the Sports Ministry to take the final decision so we don’t have any reservations, or whatsoever.

“We presented a budget estimate, and the Sports Ministry have come up with the actuals, and we have to move forward from there,” he added.

The Black Stars will face the Central African Republic at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes, Morocco, with kick-off set for 16:00 GMT, before returning to host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 12 at 19:00 GMT.

Victory in these two games would secure Ghana’s qualification for a fifth FIFA World Cup.

The fixture, initially scheduled for El Jadida, will now take place at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco on Tuesday, October 8, 2025.

CAR, who have been forced to host their home matches in Morocco due to the lack of an approved stadium in their country, will have limited home advantage—a situation that could favour the Black Stars.

Ghana, in a strong position on the qualifying table, require four points from their remaining two games against CAR and Comoros to secure a place at their fifth World Cup.

A win in Meknes, coupled with slip-ups from their closest challengers, could confirm qualification with one match to spare.

Match officials for the encounter have also been confirmed. Mauritius’ Patrice Milazare will referee the game, assisted by compatriot Louis Ralph Fabien Cauvelet and Seychelles’ Shaji Padayachy. Another Seychellois, Noris Aaron Godfrey Arissol, will serve as the fourth official.

Senegal’s Fatou Gaye has been named referee assessor, with Morocco’s Jamal Kaouachi acting as match commissioner and Nigeria’s Efughu Odochi Joan appointed as security officer.

After the game against Central African Republic, the Black Stars will take on Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium in the final group game on Sunday, October 12.

2026 WCQ: Black Stars will open camp in Morocco for CAR game – Henry Asante Twum https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-black-stars-will-open-camp-in-morocco-for-car-game-henry-asante-twum/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 21:34:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584393 Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has confirmed that the Black Stars will pitch camp in Morocco ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Central African Republic (CAR).

The team was expected to assemble in Accra before travelling for the match, which takes place on Wednesday, October 8, at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes.

However, plans have now been revised, with the squad set to regroup directly in Morocco on Sunday, October 5.

Explaining the decision in an interview with Woezor TV’s Arena, Asante Twum said the adjustment was necessary to allow the players more recovery time and to avoid logistical challenges.

“Various discussions have been held, and I can confirm that there is a proposal that the players will report to Morocco instead of Accra because we don’t have enough time to prepare for the game,” he said.

He noted that since most of the players will feature for their clubs over the weekend, they are expected to report to camp on Sunday, with the final batch arriving on Monday.

These players will play for their respective clubs this weekend, so we are expecting that the players will report to camp on Sunday and then the last badge of players are expected on Monday since the game is on a Wednesday so if they reports to Accra, they will have to be flown to Morocco either on Monday or Tuesday which will be a lot of work because the players will not have enough time and space to rest in between the period and some of the players will be coming from a far disctance so the last meeting we had, we proposed that we will meet in Morocco instead of meeting in Accra before flying to Morocco and that what is being firmed up,” he added.

Asante Twum also revealed that head coach Otto Addo has finalized his squad for the double-header, with the official list expected to be announced this week.

Following the clash with CAR, the Black Stars will return to Accra to host Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, in their final qualifier.

Ghana currently lead Group I with 19 points and require a victory to confirm their fifth World Cup appearance.

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad this week for Ghana’s crucial final round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The four-time African champions, who top Group I with 19 points, will face the Central African Republic and Comoros in their last two fixtures. A win in either match would secure their place at next year’s tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ghana will kick off the campaign away to the Central African Republic at Al Abdi Stadium in El Jadida on Wednesday, October 8. The team is set to assemble in Accra before departing for Casablanca ahead of the encounter.

The Black Stars will then conclude their qualifiers against Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12.

After the disappointment of missing out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Otto Addo and his technical team face pressure to deliver a strong squad and restore national pride by securing World Cup qualification.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, September 29, Sports Minister Kofi Adams confirmed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had submitted a proposal “within an acceptable range,” requiring no adjustments from the Ministry.

“The FA submitted a budget within an acceptable range, and the Ministry did not need to add any comments,” Kofi Adams said.

He explained that the GFA formally submitted the estimates for both matches on September 18, 2025, and the Ministry forwarded the submission to the Office of the President on September 19, in line with due process.

Kofi Adams praises Black Stars’ resilience after Mali victory https://www.adomonline.com/kofi-adams-praises-black-stars-resilience-after-mali-victory/ Wed, 10 Sep 2025 09:37:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2576794 Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has applauded the Black Stars for their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

After being held to a 1-1 draw by Chad last week, Ghana bounced back strongly on Monday night at the Accra Sports Stadium. Alexander Djiku’s powerful header in the 49th minute sealed all three points for Otto Addo’s men, extending their lead at the top of Group I.

Speaking after the match, Adams praised the team’s resilience and described the win as a clear statement of intent in Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

“It was a good game. What we wanted were the three solid points, and we got exactly that,” the Member of Parliament for Buem constituency said.

“We are really ready. We talked about qualifying for the World Cup. We didn’t win against Chad, but the boys gave their all. Now, we have beaten Mali, the strongest side in the group. The rest, we are going to deal with them also,” he added.

The victory takes Ghana to 19 points after eight matches. The Black Stars will now shift their focus to October’s final two qualifiers against the Central African Republic and Comoros as they push to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.

2026 WCQ: Otto Addo admits defensive tactics as Ghana edge Mali https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-otto-addo-admits-defensive-tactics-as-ghana-edge-mali/ Tue, 09 Sep 2025 07:11:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2576317 Ghana head coach Otto Addo has admitted employing a defensive game plan following the Black Stars’ hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The win, secured at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, strengthens Ghana’s hold atop Group I. After a goalless first half, Alexander Djiku broke the deadlock in the 49th minute, giving the hosts a crucial three points.

Speaking after the match, Addo explained that the tactical approach was deliberately cautious.

“This is football; sometimes you have to adjust your tactics. I knew Mali needed a win, so we played a bit defensively, and we also had good headers in our team because we have three tall defenders. In the end, that worked for us,” the 48-year-old said.

“I had my tactics, we had our tactics, and we made the right decisions. What matters most is the three points,” he added.

The victory leaves Ghana just one win away from qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars will next face the Central African Republic away, before concluding their qualifying campaign with a home match against Comoros in October.

“Ghana has so many quality players,” Saintfiet said.

“Look at where the players are playing, look at the choices the coach has on the bench, look at the players who weren’t selected but were available. In theory, there can’t be any problem for Ghana to qualify as number one and to beat Comoros,” he added.

The win moves Ghana to 19 points atop Group I.

Semenyo, who has been a standout performer for English Premier League side Bournemouth, was wasteful in front of goal during the Matchday 7 and 8 fixtures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

However, Addo emphasized that the 24-year-old’s contribution went beyond scoring, highlighting his display in Ghana’s narrow 1-0 win over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium.

“It is difficult to compare games in the Premier League and games in Africa, and in Ghana. It is very, very difficult, and all games have their own nature. Surely, you can say he stands out more in the Premier League, but for me today he was excellent,” Addo said after the game.

“He fought until he could not run anymore. Maybe he thought he could stay a little longer, but he was fighting. He was the lone fighter upfront, and for me, I am very glad with his performance.

“He put them under pressure, he made a lot of runs, and he created space for others to shine. I am very, very happy with his performance and his runs, especially,” he added.

Semenyo has registered one goal in seven appearances for Ghana during the ongoing qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars will wrap up their fixtures in October with crucial ties against the Central African Republic and Comoros.

The 25-year-old Real Oviedo player, who received a late call-up for the crucial Matchday 8 fixture, partnered Thomas Partey in central midfield at the Accra Sports Stadium and played the full 90 minutes.

“First of all, big congrats to him. I think he really did well,” Addo said after the game.

“It is not easy to come from a certain environment and fit into the squad, but he knows a lot of players in the team and connected very well. He is very confident, and I think he did extremely well. This was his first performance.”

Addo described Sibo as “a warrior” and predicted that he will improve further as he settles into the team, while stressing that club form will be key to future call-ups.

“He is a warrior. You could see it throughout the match. For the future, things will get even better, but like all players, his performance at the club level will determine his next call-up. The next window is pretty close, and I am sure he will be in the squad,” he added.

Sibo, who played a pivotal role in helping Oviedo secure promotion to La Liga last season, has continued his fine form in Spain’s top flight, earning a well-deserved debut on the international stage.

2026 WCQ: Alexander Djiku’s only strike seals vital win for Ghana against Mali https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-alexander-djikus-only-strike-seals-vital-win-for-ghana-against-mali/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 21:17:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2576297 The Black Stars of Ghana secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Mali in their Matchday 8 clash of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers on Monday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Head coach Otto Addo fielded a strong starting lineup, handing returns to Thomas Partey, Alexander Djiku and Kwasi Sibo, all of whom missed the 1-1 draw against Chad in N’Djamena last week.

The opening exchanges were tightly contested, with both sides enjoying spells of possession. Mali came close early on when they were awarded a free kick at the edge of the box in the 11th minute, but Ghana’s defensive wall held firm.

At the other end, Caleb Yirenkyi and Mohammed Kudus posed problems for the Eagles’ backline, though the visitors remained composed.

Ghana gradually grew into the game, creating chances from corners and free kicks but failing to make them count.

Their best opportunity of the first half came on the stroke of halftime, when Antoine Semenyo narrowly missed connecting with a Kudus cross, leaving the score goalless at the break.

The Black Stars started the second half with renewed urgency and were rewarded four minutes in. Djiku rose highest to head home Jordan Ayew’s corner, giving Ghana a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.

Mali responded strongly, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Gideon Mensah produced a vital clearance to deny them after a deflected effort threatened to creep in. The visitors maintained pressure, but Ghana’s backline stood resilient.

Addo refreshed his attack in the second half, introducing Kamaldeen Sulemana for Semenyo in the 72nd minute, before bringing on Joseph Paintsil and Iñaki Williams for Ayew and Kudus with 10 minutes remaining. Defender Jerome Opoku later replaced Djiku to help close out the game.

Despite Mali’s late dominance, the Black Stars held their nerve to claim all three points and solidify their place at the top of Group I with 19 points, with just two qualifiers left to play.

Ghana will wrap up their campaign in October with fixtures against the Central African Republic and Comoros as they aim to book a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

The Black Stars, under pressure to bounce back after dropping points in a 1-1 draw against Chad in N’Djamena, will be boosted by the return of key players Thomas Partey and Alexander Djiku, both of whom missed the last outing.

Midfielder Kwasi Sibo, a late call-up to the squad, comes straight into the lineup to partner Partey in central midfield following Elisha Owusu’s suspension.

Benjamin Asare retains his place in goal, shielded by a defensive unit that includes Gideon Mensah, Caleb Yirenkye and Jonas Adjetey.

In attack, captain Jordan Ayew will spearhead the frontline alongside Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo as Ghana seek a crucial victory at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The crucial encounter will be played today at the Accra Sports Stadium, with Ghana seeking redemption after last week’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Chad in N’Djamena — a result that attracted widespread criticism.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show ahead of the game, Chibsah said the national team carries the hopes of the nation and must rise to the occasion.

“The Black Stars have the whole country’s destiny in their pocket today and can’t afford to disappoint Ghanaians,” he said.

He expressed confidence in the squad’s quality but urged the strikers to be more clinical in front of goal.
“We have the boys; now it’s up to our strikers to take their chances against Mali today.”

Chibsah also encouraged Ghanaians to put the Chad result behind them and rally behind the team.
“Ghanaians should forget the pain of the Chad game and rally behind the Black Stars today,” he added.

2026 WCQ: Ghana v Mali preview https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-ghana-v-mali-preview/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 06:57:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575992 The Black Stars of Ghana will conclude their September international fixtures with a pivotal clash against Mali in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The four-time African champions were aiming to extend their winning streak but were held to a 1-1 draw in N’Djamena, conceding a late goal to Chad that denied them all three points.

Tonight, the Accra Sports Stadium will host a decisive CAF Group I showdown, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT. With just two matchdays remaining, Ghana lead the group, but a slim one-point margin over Comoros leaves little room for error against a Mali side still vying for a top-two finish.

Ghana entered the September window with momentum, yet the setback in Chad exposed both their strengths and vulnerabilities. Jordan Ayew’s early strike appeared to set the team on course for a routine win, but missed chances from Antoine Semenyo and Mohammed Kudus allowed the hosts to snatch a dramatic equalizer in the 89th minute.

Despite the draw, Ghana remain well-placed to qualify for back-to-back World Cups, though sharper finishing and tighter midfield control will be crucial to avoid further late-game disappointments.

Home form has been a solid foundation for the Black Stars, who remain unbeaten in Accra during the qualifiers. Defensively, they have conceded just five goals in seven matches, though the inability to close out games has emerged as a recurring concern.

With players like Kudus and Ayew supporting Semenyo in attack, Ghana possess ample quality; maintaining consistency remains the challenge.

Mali, meanwhile, arrive in Accra with renewed confidence following a 3-0 win over Comoros. Goals from Dorgeles Nene, Kamory Doumbia, and Lassana Coulibaly highlighted the Eagles’ attacking prowess and balance, qualities that have at times eluded them this campaign. Mali have lost just once in seven qualifiers but remain behind due to three draws, though their defensive record—conceding only four goals—makes them a formidable opponent.

With second-placed Comoros only a point behind, a victory in Accra could put Mali firmly back in contention for automatic qualification, making tonight’s encounter a critical test for both sides.

Team News and Possible Lineups

Ghana may adjust their lineup after the disappointing draw in Chad. Elisha Owusu is suspended, opening the door for Kwasi Sibo to partner Thomas Partey, who missed the last match due to illness. Mohammed Salisu could return to central defence alongside Joseph Aidoo or Alexander Djiku. Kudus and Ayew are expected to lead the attack, with Antoine Semenyo maintaining a key role in the front three.

Mali head to Accra confident and relatively injury-free. Yves Bissouma has been omitted due to a dip in club form, but Lassana Coulibaly and Amadou Haidara provide depth in midfield. Dorgeles Nene will provide width, with Kamory Doumbia retaining his creative duties. At the back, captain Hamari Traoré marshals a disciplined defence that has conceded less than a goal per game.

Ghana (Possible XI): Asare, Mensah, Salisu, Opoku, Djiku; Partey, Sibo, Semenyo, Kudus, Inaki, Ayew

Mali (Possible XI): Diarra, Diakite, Niakate, Dante, Nene; Coulibaly, Dieng, Fofana, Doumbia, Traoré, Sangaré

Addo’s comments come in the wake of last week’s disappointing 1-1 draw against Chad in N’Djamena during Matchday 7.

Jordan Ayew had put the Black Stars ahead in the 17th minute, only for Celestine Ecau to equalize in the dying moments, ensuring both sides shared the spoils.

The result left Ghana’s top spot in Group I intact but under renewed pressure, as Comoros narrowed the gap with a 2-0 victory over the Central African Republic.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Addo stressed that the team’s focus remains unwavering.

“The positive truth is that nothing and the status quo have not changed. Comoros have won their game, and they have gotten closer, but for us, nothing has changed,” the 48-year-old said.

“We want to beat Mali at home tomorrow, and that is what we expect to do. The only positive thing about Chad is that we still have it in our own hands, and we can decide our destiny, so we will put in everything to win against Mali,” he added.

The Black Stars will host the Eagles of Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 19:00 GMT, as they pursue a fifth World Cup appearance.

2026 WCQ: Otto Addo unfazed by sack fears ahead of Mali clash https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wcq-otto-addo-unfazed-by-sack-fears-ahead-of-mali-clash/ Sun, 07 Sep 2025 18:26:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575956 Black Stars head coach Otto Addo says he is unconcerned about the threat of losing his job despite mounting scrutiny over Ghana’s inconsistent performances.

Since his reappointment in March 2024 on a three-year deal, with an option for two more years, the 48-year-old has taken charge of 15 matches, recording five wins, five draws and five defeats.

The pressure on Addo heightened after Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw by Chad in N’Djamena during Matchday 7 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Despite the setback, the Black Stars remain top of Group I with 16 points.

Addressing the media at a pre-match press conference on Sunday ahead of Ghana’s decisive clash with Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium, Addo dismissed the narrative that his record paints an unflattering picture.

He argued that friendly matches used for experimentation should not count toward his overall performance.

“These statistics are of no use, especially when we have friendly games in between where we use all kinds of players to test, so I don’t think this is usuable in terms of what this coach has done,” Addo told the media.

The former Borussia Dortmund talent coach added that he is guided only by faith, not fear.

“I am not afraid of anything. I only fear God. I am sure we will win and your question will be of no use,” he added.

Ghana face Mali in a crucial Group I encounter on Monday, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 GMT at the Accra Sports Stadium.
