Speaking on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, the 63-year-old actor described the label as a “scam,” explaining that he does not consider himself worthy of the title.

“I think the legend thing is a scam. I have my legends like Uncle Pete [Edochie] and Uncle Olu Jacobs — these are our ancestors and true legends,” RMD said.

He added that being called a legend often feels like people are trying to push him toward retirement.
“When they call me that, I feel like they’re trying to relegate me to the neighborhood of retired people or those nearing retirement,” he explained.

RMD began his acting career in 1982 and became a household name in Nollywood during the industry’s golden era in the 1990s. Before venturing fully into acting, he worked as a journalist, writing for publications such as Concord Newspapers, Metro Magazine, and The Guardian, focusing on entertainment and lifestyle.

His background in journalism gave him a unique perspective on the entertainment industry and helped him build valuable networks, but acting remained his true passion.

RMD’s first major television appearance was on Ripples, one of Nigeria’s most popular soap operas in the 1980s. As Nollywood blossomed in the ’90s, he quickly rose to fame, admired for his deep voice, polished presence, and natural ability to bring characters to life.

Over the years, he has starred in countless classics, often playing romantic leads, business moguls, and influential authority figures, earning him the admiration of fans across Africa.

Stop the lies! Nigeria did not originate highlife https://www.adomonline.com/stop-the-lies-nigeria-did-not-originate-highlife/ Mon, 17 Feb 2025 10:22:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2505238 It is laughable that in 2025 some people from other countries still want to rob Ghana off the credit for birthing highlife music.

An interview that Nigerian artiste Yemi Alade had with CNN’s Larry Madowo about three months ago has goaded me to write this piece.

A comment Yemi made in that interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo, claiming highlife did not originate only in Ghana but also in Nigeria, reeks of ignorance if not for ill agenda.

While talking about how successful her song ‘Johnny’ was, Larry Madowo made reference to the highlife elements in that song, crediting the genre’s origin to Ghana.

Obviously unenthused about that, Yemi Alade retorted: “you said first of all that highlife is originally Ghanaian? We have to talk about that. I grew up at a time in Nigeria when highlife was a big deal. And as far as I know, Nigeria, Ghana etc we have already been connected via music and everything so I feel like it originated in both Nigeria and Ghana.”

On the SAY IT LOUD segment on Showbiz A-Z aired on Saturday, February 15, 2025, I highlighted some historical facts about when highlife started in Ghana and when it got to Nigeria. Maybe Yemi Alade hasn’t learnt her history well. For someone born in 1989, maybe she thought highlife started around the time she claims “highlife was a big deal” in Nigeria.

This is not the first time citizens of other countries have tried to claim ownership of highlife. Some Liberians have also tried but to no avail.

Ghanaian ethnomusicologist Professor John Collins has spoken about how he had to school some Nigerians who made same claim during a conference in Nigeria, years ago.

Evidence that highlife, an evolved version of indigenous Ghanaian sounds Osibisaba and Adaha which emerged in the early 1920s, is of Ghanaian origin abound. Highlife got to Nigeria around 1937. In Professor John Collins’ book Highlife Time 3, he writes in Chapter 47: “Nigeria is now a major centre for highlife. However, the music was introduced to the country from Ghana in variety of ways. At first, through the diffusion of the kokomba highlife, and 1937 Nigerian tour of the Cape Coast Sugar Babies Orchestra. Later came the 1950s records EK Nyame and Onyina’s guitar band and most importantly the early 50s tours of the Ghanaian Tempos band.”

The book also reveals that the jazzy style of highlife of ET Mensah’s dance band was copied by most Nigerian band leaders like Victor Olaiya, Bobby Benson, Rex Lawson and EC Arinze, who had earlier been playing versions of calypso and rumba.

This was way before the likes of Abirekyireba Kofi Sammy, King Bruce, Jerry Hansen, Nana Kwame Ampadu and others went to Nigeria to ply their highlife trades.

The Kumasi Trio led by Jacob Sam (Kwame Asare) recorded the first Ghanaian highlife song, ‘Yaa Amponsah’, as early as 1928 when highlife had not gotten to Nigerian yet. The song was recorded in London on the Zonophone label.

It will be wrong to say Ghana is the only country that performs highlife. Countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria also do highlife. However, the fact that highlife originated from Ghana is incontrovertible.

Last year, I had an interview with Professor John Collins on Joy FM‘s Showbiz A-Z about claims by some Liberians that because the Kru sailors from Liberia taught some of our Ghanaian musicians the two finger picking technique of the guitar playing, they started highlife.

In his response, he said: “it [Liberian guitar style] wasn’t highlife. The Kru people did develop distinct ways of playing the guitar on the high seas in the 19th century. Krus were recruited on board a lot of sailing ships by the Europeans and Americans. So they picked up the guitar but they didn’t use the Spanish way of picking the strings. They used the typical African one like how King Ayisoba or other Africans play the lute. It’s a two finger technique; and that’s what the Kru people spread down the African coast but it wasn’t highlife.”

According to him, this guitar-playing style was just a single element of highlife which in Ghana was absorbed into a music type called ‘osibisaba.’ In Sierra Leone they fused it into the Maringa style, while in Nigeria it found a place in juju and native blues.

“So we say that the Kru people didn’t invent highlife but they created a very important ingredient of highlife which is a specific way of playing a guitar. They introduced it to Ghana around about the 1900s, but when the Ghanaians got hold of this style, they also developed their owns styles such as Yaa AmponsahOdonson and so on. So this is what happened. It is not that the Liberians invented highlife,” Professor John Collins added.

He further noted that because in those days there were no colonial borders, the fisher folk moved between countries so there was a lot of ethnic blending going on in West Africa. The Kru people would settle in Ghana around the Light House in Accra, or Ghanaians would go to Nigeria and vice versa.

Famed Nigeria actor Pete Edochie is on record to have acknowledged Ghana as the sole originator of highlife.

“All this music originated from Ghana. Why? In Nigeria, the popular genre of music was highlife. Where did highlife come from? Ghana! This is where it originated!” he said a video.

Ghanaians discovered highlife. We named it and sold it to the world. Ghana’s Highlife spread to other West African countries through tours and trade. Ghanaians took highlife to Nigeria. Some Nigerians even came to Ghana to learn our sounds. Fela Kuti spent time in Ghana learning about our highlife music, developing it into Afrobeat.

In his biography titled ‘Fela: This Bitch of a Life’, he writes that one day while in a club in Accra, he thought about how to bring out something different other than what James Brown did.

“I must clear myself from this mess. I must identify myself with Africa. Then I’ll have an identity,” he writes.

He added that there was a Ghanaian-Nigerian friend, called Raymond Aziz, sitting by him on that day at the club. He asked him: “Raymond, you see that my music? I must give it a name oo, a real African name that is catchy. I’ve been looking for names to give it. And I’ve been thinking of calling it Afrobeat.”

After Raymond endorsed the name, he flew with it.

Ghana has been the fulcrum of Africa’s music but we always lose out on things spawned from our country. This is why an Afrobeats documentary by a Nigerian will not acknowledge that the word ‘Afrobeats’ (with the “s”) was first used by a Ghanaian DJ in the United Kingdom called DJ Abrantie.

On July 5, 2022, one of Nigeria’s top music journalists, Joey Akan, confirmed on X (then Twitter): “Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat was coined in Ghana. Our generation’s Afrobeat was coined by a Ghanaian.”

While a lot of us admire the proactive and smart nature of Nigerians, it has always been unfair on the part of some of them to arrogate to themselves creations that are not theirs, just like Yemi Alade and some of her ilk are trying to do with the highlife story.

Nigeria wants to claim everything we started to the extent that they now claim they own Detty December, too.

But I know where Yemi Alade is headed with her claim. They are doing this so that United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) will co-list Ghana and Nigeria as originator of highlife.

I am reliably informed that some Nigerians are making moves to petition UNESCO to be made co-owners of the highlife genre. This should not happen. We can’t change history. We will not do that! Nigeria never originated highlife. Not even Liberia whose Kru sailors spread the two finger picking technique to Ghana and other West African countries.

The Ghana Culture Forum, the National Folklore Board, Ghana’s Commission on UNESCO, Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and Ghana Music Alliance should not let this slide. This agenda should not be allowed to thrive.

I understand the necessary documentation for the listing process as requested by UNESCO has been submitted. Hopefully, it gets listed this year.

Highlife originated in Ghana by Ghanaians; any other country that also performs the genre, copied from Ghana.

What do you gain from having another wife? – Pete Edochie quizzes men https://www.adomonline.com/what-do-you-gain-from-having-another-wife-pete-edochie-quizzes-men/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 18:42:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2489209 Veteran Nollywood actor ,Pete Edochie has shared his thoughts on the complexities of modern relationships, offering candid insights during a recent interview.

Reflecting on today’s marital dynamics, Pete expressed concern about the growing instability of marriages and touched on his son Yul Edochie’s controversial decision to take a second wife.

The legendary actor lamented the declining longevity of marriages, noting that unions lasting over a decade have become increasingly uncommon.

“It’s disheartening to see how quickly marriages collapse these days,” Pete remarked, stressing that genuine, enduring love is being replaced by shallow, fleeting connections.

On the subject of polygamy, Pete questioned the rationale behind men seeking multiple wives.

“What can another wife give you that the one you already have cannot?” he asked.

He added that, “The excitement in intimacy doesn’t come from the other person—it comes from you, the man. So why the need for another partner?”

These remarks follow the widespread social media debate over Yul Edochie’s recent second marriage.

While Pete stopped short of directly criticizing his son, his comments appear to promote commitment and stability in marriage.

Yul Edochie unveils second son with Judy Austin https://www.adomonline.com/yul-edochie-unveils-second-son-with-judy-austin/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 20:23:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2384410 Nigerian actor, Yul Edochie, has officially shared with his fans and followers the identity of the second son with actress, Judy Austin.

The actor shared pictures of his son named, Pete Ndubuisi Yul-Edochie, on the little boy’s first birthday on Monday, April 22.

Yul Edochie, now a self-proclaimed pastor, revealed that the one-year-old was named after his paternal and maternal grandfathers – one being the revered actor Pete Edochie.

The actor prayed for his son, hoping the little boy would become greater than his parents.

“It’s time to grant the world the privilege to meet our son. From Isi Mmili Ji Ofor & Ijele Isi Mmili @judyaustin1. His name is Pete Ndubuisi Yul-Edochie. Named after his two grandfathers.”

“Rejoice with us as he turns 1 year old. Happy birthday, son. You shall be 10 times greater than your parents. May God lead you always and may your ancestors stand by you solidly,” Yul Edochie’s post read.

Yul Edochie and Judy Austin share two sons.

The couple introduced their first child Star Dike Munachimso Yul-Edochie in 2022 when they revealed their relationship to the public.

Meanwhile, despite being a couple Yul Edochie has allegedly claimed not to be married to Judith Austin, despite the two children they have had together.

He says the relationship between them is all about skitmaking, and maintains there is no legally recognised union between them.

His estranged wife May Edochie’s legal team, headed by Emeka Ugwuonye of Due Process Advocates, on Sunday, in a statement and video address, revealed that Yul, 42, made this claim in his court filing.

May filed for a divorce against her husband in August 2023, with details of the court proceedings having been kept hush.

Nathaniel Bassey petitions police for prosecution of persons claiming he fathered Mercy Chinwo’s son https://www.adomonline.com/nathaniel-bassey-petitions-police-for-prosecution-of-persons-claiming-he-fathered-mercy-chinwos-son/ Thu, 04 Apr 2024 13:29:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2377094 Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has petitioned Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over allegations that he fathered his colleague Mercy Chinwo’s son.

The singer, in a petition filed by his lawyers, Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia, asked the IGP to investigate and prosecute four social media users—Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid who accused him of paternal fraud.

The four suspects alleged that Nathaniel Bassey was the biological father of Mercy’s six-month-old son. They made the allegations on their social media accounts when Mercy and her husband, Blessed Uzochikwa, unveiled their son’s identity on social media on March 29.

Mr Ejike’s post read, “This Mercy Chinwo’s child she was hiding after giving birth, but the truth is that this baby looks exactly like singer Nathaniel Bassey. Nothing anybody wants to reason with me oh. This child is Nathaniel Bassey’s Baby. Maybe a secret away match occurred; otherwise, how can we make empirical sense of this.”

The petition submitted to the IGP, on April 1, read in parts: “On Friday, the 29th day of March 2024, Mercy Chinwo Blessed another popular gospel music minister, and her husband posted pictures of their son and themselves on different social media platforms.”

“However, our client was disheartened, saddened, and grossly disturbed to find that the suspects mentioned above, as mischief makers with a criminal intent to destroy the image and character of our client, had made different social media posts of defamatory matter, calling our client ‘the father of minister Mercy Chinwo Blessed’s son,’ a woman who is married to another man.”

The petition

The lawyers stated that the social media posts by the four individuals constituted a thorough character assassination of Mr Bassey.

They noted that these actions violated Sections 373 and 375 of the Criminal Code Act, as well as Section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.).

“The post by Mr Okoronkwo Ejike has since gone viral on the platform. In reaction to the post, Mr Kingsley Ibeh commented on Mr Okoronkwo’s post with a picture of our client with the caption “The real father of the baby.”

“In a post on the platform “X” formerly known as Twitter, ‘Dj SpoiltKid’ a verified X user, quoted the statement by Okoronkwo Ejike along with a screenshot of the post and added, “When are we doing DNA test?”

“In another post, Mr Terrence Ekot, on the platform “X”, made a post thus: “Take a look at the stunning resemblance of Mercy Chinwo’s son and Nathaniel Bassey. Though the duo has been working together on several projects, what do you have to say?” (sic).

“These nefarious acts of these suspects, if not immediately dealt with, will continue to destroy our client’s image, injure his reputation, assassinate his character, and cast aspersion on the good name built by our client over the years.

“The consequences of making such statements on social media have been known to tarnish the reputations of individuals, render marriages unstable, and many never recover from them. International reputation is an asset—both for the individual and the nation—and takes time to acquire.

“Consequently, we urge you to use your good offices to, in the interest of justice, investigate this matter, arrest, and bring the suspect to justice, which will serve as a deterrent to others.”

Legal action

In a separate statement signed by Peter Abraham, one of the lawyers, the social media post was labelled as an authoritative accusation against Mr Bassey’s reputation.

The lawyer stated that the posts could tarnish the gospel musician’s hard-earned reputation and ministry.

“We believe that the post was released maliciously with the intent to criminally defame our client and cause injurious damage to his person,” the statement added.

Mr Abraham also said the team had initiated legal action against the creators and disseminators of the posts, as well as individuals who have made other irresponsible statements and videos on the matter.

“Our laws in Nigeria have covered and provided sanctions in cases where criminally intended statements, made against individuals or property (tangible or intangible), are capable of causing irreparable damage and injury to the character and reputation of that individual or property to which this case falls.

“Our client will be exploring all the options and remedies available to him under the law against the persons to whom our legal actions are directed.”

Mr Abraham emphasised that social media is not a lenient environment and cautioned that everyone bears responsibility for every statement or comment, whether expressed verbally or through videos.

He said: “The list of persons submitted to the authorities in our petition is not exhaustive, and our team is scanning through other posts to identify those that may be culpable to bring them to justice.”

Apology

In a swift reaction, Mr Ejike, one of the accused persons who published the first allegation, apologised to the singer and Mercy on his social media handle.

Mr Ejike also extended his apology to anyone his post hurt.

The post read: “I at this moment tender an unreserved apology to mercy Chinwo, Nathaniel Bassey and Pastor Blessed for my take on the striking resemblance of Pastor Blessed’s baby and to everyone who got hurt over my post, I’m deeply very sorry. Love and light for Cosmic positive vibrations.. Shalom.”

The other three persons have yet to respond or react to the petition.

It is not the first time a Nigerian celebrity has threatened legal action over defamatory statements on social media.

In January, a Nigerian-Sierra Leonean comedian, Agozi Samuel, apologised to AY comedian for making defamatory statements about him.

Agozi Samuel, on his Facebook page [Agozi Samuel Comedy], alleged that AY engaged in an extra-marital affair with May, the estranged wife of actor Yul Edochie.

He claimed the alleged affair contributed to the couple’s marital crisis. He further alleged AY was not the biological father of his second daughter.

In response, AY petitioned the Delta State Police Command to arrest and prosecute Agozi Samuel for criminal defamation and cyberstalking, as stated in a petition released by his lawyer, Osoala Iweze.

However, Mr Samuel, in an apology video on Facebook, admitted that all the claims made in his video were false and apologised to AY.

He said he created the video for attention and deleted it because he realised it damaged AY’s reputation.

Unilever Ghana has relocated its tea production to Nigeria due to current mess – Ato Forson https://www.adomonline.com/unilever-ghana-has-relocated-its-tea-production-to-nigeria-due-to-current-mess-ato-forson/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 15:35:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2367527 The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has revealed that Unilever Ghana has decided to move its tea production operations to Nigeria, citing the ongoing economic challenges in Ghana.

He disclosed this on Monday, March 11, following President Akufo-Addo’s 2024 State of the Nation address presented to Parliament in February.

The Ajumako Enyan Essiam MP noted that more companies may follow suit due to the country’s current economic downturn.

Expressing his concerns about the management of the country under the Akufo-Addo government, Dr Ato Forson emphasised that the business community’s relocation is alarming and should be a cause for worry among Ghanaians.

As a former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr Ato Forson’s remarks underscore the growing apprehension about Ghana’s economic stability and its impact on local businesses.

“Again, Mr Speaker, Unilever Ghana, which has for a very long time been producing its famous Lipton tea in Ghana, has stopped its tea production here. Unilever has relocated its tea production to Nigeria.”

“We have lost jobs by exporting the Lipton tea production to Nigeria. This is bad news for Ghanaian employees.”

“Again, Mr Speaker, Unilever Ghana has not been able to commence its Pepsodent production in Ghana after President Akufo-Addo commissioned the plant, five years ago. This is as a result of the worsening business environment.”

2024 Polls: Be extremely vigilant – Mahama to NDC members https://www.adomonline.com/2024-polls-be-extremely-vigilant-mahama-to-ndc-members/ Mon, 11 Mar 2024 13:37:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2367495 Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called on party members in the Greater Accra Region to maintain a high level of vigilance in this year’s general elections.

The former President said NDC’s loss in the 2020 elections due to certain irregularities at the polling station which made them challenge the results at the Supreme Court.

While addressing NDC executives and key stakeholders during his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in Accra, Mahama stressed the importance of fortifying efforts to secure victory in the 2024 elections.

“One of the key things in this election is vigilance, we can do all the campaigning we want, but if we are not vigilant on the day, and we don’t cover every single polling station with eagles’ eyes. You can do all the beautiful things you can, razzmatazz and in the end, you don’t achieve the target you want” the NDC leader said.

He urged executives to meticulously choose capable agents to represent the party during the polls.

“So Greater Accra Region, we want you to cover all the polling stations with the best party agents. The election directory, you are aware, is conducting some exercises. They’ve been conducting exams for election directors in their constituencies and the regions because we need the best people who understand the electoral system to be able to monitor the elections in the region. We should not be sentimental with these appointments and appoint the right people,” he advised.

You don’t qualify to be a man if …- Pete Edochie shares wise words https://www.adomonline.com/you-dont-qualify-to-be-a-man-if-pete-edochie-shares-wise-words/ Sun, 10 Mar 2024 08:39:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2367073 Renowned Nollywood veteran, Pete Edochie, has said men who resort to violence against women are a disgrace to manhood.

Celebrating his 77th birthday which coincided with International Women’s Day, Edochie highlighted the significance of women in society, asserting that a house truly becomes a home only when a woman is present.

Edochie admonished men, stating that a woman’s strength lies not in physical power but in her words.

He remarked that, resorting to violence against a woman due to provocation strips a man of his claim to true manhood.

The veteran actor further iterated that, a man capable of harmonious relations with a woman possess the qualities of leadership and can govern not only local communities but also entire nations.

Pete Edochie’s wise words serve as a timely reminder of the importance of respecting and cherishing women.

Mr Ibu – The man who made Africa laugh https://www.adomonline.com/mr-ibu-the-man-who-made-africa-laugh/ Tue, 05 Mar 2024 17:44:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2365489 Such was the comic genius of Nigerian actor, John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, that he often didn’t even need to open his mouth to make people laugh.

“I was chosen to play a doctor in a film one time and when I came to the set dressed as one, even without saying anything, all the crew just burst out laughing,” he recalled.

His death at the age of 62 has left family, friends and fans of Nigeria’s film industry Nollywood across Africa in mourning.

He burst onto the scene in 2004 with the movie Mr Ibu, which tells the story of the eponymous single father and his son as they journey through life, getting into a series of tricky, and hilarious, predicaments.”His facial expressions and his body were his biggest selling points,” film director Babangida Bangis told the BBC, contrasting him to most comic actors who use words to make people laugh.

“Mr Ibu was different as he doesn’t even have to talk to elicit laughter, as his face just like Mr Bean [Rowan Atkinson] will do the trick,” he said.

Indeed, one of Mr Ibu’s most iconic scenes and the one which introduced him to African audiences, was one in which he hardly said a word.

In the film Mr Ibu, he and his son were returning home from a farm where they worked and they had a single bicycle.

At first, the father let his son ride the bicycle while he walked.

But passers-by stopped them to ask why the son didn’t show respect to his aged father by letting him ride.

So they switched places.

Then another passer-by said the father was wicked for allowing his young son to walk while he was taking it easy.

So they both decided to walk.

Then people called them senseless for walking while they had a bicycle.

The film was so successful that there have been four sequels and Okafor has simply been known as Mr Ibu ever since.

Bridging Nigeria’s divides

He will also be fondly remembered in northern Nigeria, as he was one of the few Nollywood actors to cross over into the film industry based in the northern city of Kano, known as Kannywood, which is generally looked down on by those from the south.

His best-known Kannywood film was the Hausa language comedy Hajiya Babba about two lost sons from southern Nigeria who traced their father in the north and began a new life with him.

“He was one of those who helped bridge the gap and bring unity between Kannywood and Nollywood by going to the north to act,” Bangis noted.

Born on 17 October 1961, the actor hailed from the south-eastern Enugu state, which has produced a long list of Nollywood stars.

Okafor didn’t have an easy childhood, moving to another town early on in his life to live with his brother, and doing menial jobs to survive and support his family.

After trying his hands in professions from hair styling to photography, he went to a film audition where he was spotted by legendary actor Pete Edochie who saw his talent and opened the doors of Nollywood to him.

‘This is my worst marriage’

Since the announcement of his death, tributes have been pouring in.

Popular Nigerian comedian Bovi described Mr Ibu as one of the greats.

“The passing of John Okafor aka Mr. Ibu is a sad chapter in Nigerian entertainment history. Let’s take solace in the fact that his works will live on and will inspire generations unborn. RIP to one of the greats” Bovi posted on X.

Nigeria’s Culture Minister Hannatu Musawa described him as a household name who had made families smile throughout his career.

The actor’s ill-health first came to public attention last year. One of his legs was amputated in November after fans donated to a crowd-funding scheme to pay his medical bills.

It is believed that the actor suffered from diabetes, but no cause of death has been announced by his family.

Despite bringing such joy to so many people, he never found happiness on the domestic front.

He was married five times, most of which ended in bitter divorces.

He recently described his fifth marriage as being even less happy than his previous ones.

“This is my final marriage. If this one falls apart, I won’t marry again. This is my fifth and the worst marriage,” he told Nigeria’s Daily Post news site earlier this year.

Local media say he is survived by 13 children but some of these have also been a cause of concern.

After his fans donated money for his operation, his son Daniel Okafor and adopted daughter Jasmine Chioma were arrested on suspicion of hacking into his phone and taking $60,700 (£47,800) for themselves. They have denied the charges.

Although he hasn’t starred in a new film for some time, he remained active until ill-health stopped him.

In October 2020, he released two singles, titled This Girl and Do You Know, which were believed to be his last projects.

However his venture into music was not a success and he will always be remembered as the man who brought laughter to homes across Africa.

Fan Aminu Hamisu says he’ll be paying his tributes to the actor by re-watching some of his old movies on YouTube.

He is unlikely to be the only one.

This is coming after his colleague, Kanayo O Kanayo publicly claimed to be his senior in the Nollywood film industry.

Addressing claims made by Kanayo O Kanayo, Edochie revealed that his involvement in the movie industry predated the concept of Nollywood itself.

During an interview with Afia TV, Edochie emphasized that Nollywood only came into existence seven years after his iconic portrayal in “Things Fall Apart.”

He explained that in 1985, when he took on the role, the film industry was still in its infancy.

Edochie’s performance in the acclaimed movie catalyzed his illustrious career, propelling him to fame both nationally and internationally.

Edochie recounted his globetrotting experiences, highlighting how his role in “Things Fall Apart” garnered attention from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The renowned media outlet even travelled to Nigeria to interview him, recognizing the impact of his performance on the world stage.

As a testament to the significance of his role, Edochie shared that he was invited to meet with Chinua Achebe, the esteemed author of the book that inspired “Things Fall Apart.”

This meeting took place in America, further solidifying Edochie’s status as a respected figure in the Nigerian film industry.

Kanayo, has caused a stir on social media with some information regarding his influence in the movie industry.

Kanayo O. Kanayo boldly asserted his superiority over his seasoned colleague, Pete Edochie, in Nollywood during an interview with Afia TV.

The 61-year-old disclosed some of his ground-breaking accomplishments while discussing the history of the movie industry.

Kanayo O. Kanayo stated that in 1992, Nnebue was the first filmmaker to professionally produce home videos.

According to him, individuals like Pete Edochie, Nnebue, and himself, among others, shouldn’t be left out of the history of the film industry.

He added that, he and his co-stars from the popular 1992–1993 film “Living in Bondage” were among the first Nollywood actors to be treated as actual professionals.

He emphasized that the 1971 movie “Things Fall Apart” with Pete Edochie was a theatrical endeavor and not a home video production.

According to Kanayo, Pete Edochie joined Nollywood four years after he had joined the industry, thereby making him senior to Pete Edochie.

The veteran actor also emphasized that, he was prepared to refute any claims that Edochie joined Nollywood before him.

Kanayo O Kanayo’s remarks did not sit well with many as they stated that Pete Edochie is senior to Kanayo.

Here are some comments

Okyeame Kwame takes on African Arm-wrestling Federation President https://www.adomonline.com/okyeame-kwame-takes-on-african-arm-wrestling-federation-president/ Sat, 19 Aug 2023 14:12:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2285113 Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Kwame Nsiah-Apau, known by his stage name Okyeame Kwame, has lashed out at the President of the African Arm-wrestling Federation, Charles Osei Asibey, popularly known as The Barrister.

This comes on the back of his statement that men are the most truthful and faithful gender, but they would like to have pleasure elsewhere.

He said he believes that men only do that because their spouses do not perform their responsibilities and that sometimes women pushes them out of their relationship.

Mr Assibey made this statement on the Visdel Show, hosted by Mavis Amanor also known as Firelady, stating that it is only a man with witchcraft or one that was born out of fornication that cheats.

According to the President, having pleasure and comfort elsewhere is what the opposite sex has termed cheating, but to him, it is not.

“I don’t believe men cheat. Men do not cheat. Men are the most faithful and truthful. But this is what happens, men only find pleasure and comfort elsewhere. That’s what you term as cheating, but truly, it is not.

“They do that because the spouse does not perform their duties as required in the covenant, which is marriage. It is only a man that was born out of fornication or is a wizard who cheats,” he said.

This, however, has not gone down well with Okyeame Kwame, who has taken to social media to express his displeasure.

According to the rapper, you don’t find pleasure elsewhere when you have told a woman she is the only one, and based on that promise, she has allowed you to marry her.

The rapper then questioned whether it would be cheating when a woman also finds pleasure elsewhere.

He stated that seeking pleasure elsewhere outside of marriage is also breaking the bond, as mentioned by Charles Osei Asibey.

The legend disclosed he did not feel good about his son putting morality to the side to marry a second wife.

Mr Edochie, who is a staunch Christian, added that there isn’t much to say on his son’s decision, likening Yul to the biblical Solomon.

“I didn’t feel good, but like I said I’m a Christian and I read the Bible. Solomon with 700 wives and 300 concubines, was branded a man of wisdom,” he said.

However, Mr Edochie believes it is his son’s choice and for whatever reason he decided to take a second wife, he wishes him well.

Yul made an announcement of tying the knot with his colleague in April 2022, months after the couple had welcomed a baby boy.

His first wife, May, has since expressed her displeasure at his decision, remarking that her 17 years of toil with Yul has gone down the drain.

She added that she will not be cajoled to accept what does not align with her faith.

Two popular Nollywood actors reportedly kidnapped https://www.adomonline.com/two-popular-nollywood-actors-reportedly-kidnapped/ Sun, 31 Jul 2022 08:40:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2144088 Two prominent Nollywood actors and members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Cynthia Okereke and Clemson Cornel, aka Agbogidi, have been reportedly kidnapped.

Monalisa Chinda, AGN’s Director of Communications, broke the news in a statement made available to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday.

Ms Chinda, in the statement, stated that the actors were reported missing after their family members confirmed they didn’t come back from a film location at Ozalla Town, Enugu state.

“The two members were suspected of having been kidnapped, which has increased fear amongst members about the safety of actors filming in the country.

“Because of this sad development, the National President of the Guild, Ejezie Emeka Rollas, has instructed all Actors to avoid going to the outskirt of cities to film except full security cover is provided to ensure their safety,” the statement read.

Mr Rollas also expressed shock while urging the security agencies to speed up investigations that would lead to their safe rescue.

He equally appealed to all members to pray for the safe return of the actors.

Meanwhile, the Police Command in Enugu State has launched an investigation to unravel and locate the missing Nollywood actress, Cynthia Okereke.

Enugu Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Enugu.

This was after the Director of Communications, Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Mrs Monalisa Chinda-Coker, said the families of actress Okereke and actor Clemson Cornel confirmed that they had not returned home since leaving a film location at Ozalla community.

DSP Ndukwe said that “the current report at our disposal dwells on a case of an abandoned and recovered vehicle, as well as a missing person.”

He said the vehicle was abandoned and recovered at Four-Corners on Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway, precisely within Ozalla community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State axis of the road.

“Hence, the location was visited and the vehicle recovered. Coincidentally, at about 11:30 am, on the same date, a report was further received stating that the vehicle belongs to Cynthia Okereke a Nollywood Actress, who was last seen on July 26,” he said.

History

Nollywood acts have been victims of kidnapping in Nigeria in the past.

In June 2021, a Nollywood actor, Pressing Forward, was kidnapped in Imo State. He was later released from captivity, after which his fans rallied around him in jubilation.

In 2009 veteran actor, Pete Edochie, was kidnapped and released after paying a ransom. Nkem Owoh was abducted and released after paying a ₦1.4 million ransom.

The actor, popularly known as ‘Osuofia’, was kidnapped as he travelled along Enugu – Port Harcourt expressway.

In June, actor Uche Odoputa appealed for assistance following his father, Kenneth Odoputa’s kidnapping.

He revealed in an Instagram post that his father had been held captive for weeks.

This comes months after he introduced his new wife and son to the world. The news, however, came with some backlash with some people slamming the actor for stepping outside his marriage.

Meanwhile, Mr Edochie believes that the death wishes people have been raining on him and his family is because they hate to see him happy.

The 40-year-old actor noted that “just seeing someone happy makes a lot of people angry. Very angry. Some people are even wishing my family death. I don’t understand. See, me I no dey for ‘God heal my haters’.”

He stated that he prays for whoever prays for him and for those who pray he fails he wishes the same for them.

He wrote that he does not appreciate the death wishes and will not coddle anyone who decides to send him such a message.

“If you love me may triple love & blessings follow you, if you pray for my downfall may downfall consume you. If my lifestyle wey no concern you dey pain, you make e pain you well well. If you wish my family death, death shall be your portion. You wish me well, it shall be well with you 10 times over. Amen!”

This comes days after Mr Edochie took his son, Star Dike who he shares with his second wife Judy Austin, to see his father, legendary actor Pete Edochie.

Star Dike met his grandfather for the first time. He was taken to see Pete Edochie for some blessings on his birthday.

Will Pete Edochie play Satan in C.O.L.D movie? Here’s the official trailer https://www.adomonline.com/will-pete-edochie-play-satan-in-c-o-l-d-movie-heres-the-official-trailer/ Wed, 15 Jun 2022 10:40:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2126407 The official trailer for Bakia T. Thomas’s star-studded thriller C.O.L.D has debuted ahead of its August 12, 2022, theatrical release.

A first glimpse at the trailer suggests religious and interestingly supernatural characters including one depicted as Satan. The character played by veteran movie star Pete Edochie is described in the trailer as the ‘Son of the morning’, a popular term used to describe the Devil.

While the film’s plot is yet to be made public, the trailer hints on the thriller retelling the story of the eccentric biblical character. “I am the Son of the morning, full of wisdom rich in beauty…I command the celestial choir because I write all the songs but how has humanity portrayed me but a monster with horns and a long barbed tail,” Edochie says in a creepy monologue featured in the trailer.

According to Thomas who doubles as Producer, the film is an adaptation of a book published in the United States. He revealed in a social media post that several Hollywood production companies sought to acquire the rights to the book but its author turned down the offers.

“I’m super excited that I was chosen by God to have told this story. Never made a film of this magnitude in my life and I count it a privileged. It was a massive work put in here by the cast and the crew of this movie.

“Being an adaptation of a book that was published in the United States ??, 4 different Hollywood film Companies tried to acquire the rights of the book to make a movie from it and the Author refused,” Thomas wrote on Instagram.

C.O.L.D stars an impressive list of Nollywood veterans including Richard Mofe Damijo who stars in the lead role as a religious leader, Hilda Dokubo, Ireti Doyle, Kanayo o. Kanayo, Keppy Ekpenyong with IK Ogbonna and Freddie George.

Marry more wives if you want to be as wise as Solomon – Man asserts https://www.adomonline.com/marry-more-wives-if-you-want-to-be-as-wise-as-solomon-man-asserts/ Fri, 29 Apr 2022 16:04:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2110227 An ardent listener of Joy FM has justified polygamy.

William said the fact that many men cited in the Bible had more than one wife, is evidence that the Holy Book subscribes to the practice.

“Our old folks were at peace living peacefully – one man many wives, but we were on this continent when the white man brought his Bible and his religion. Even in there, most of the holy men had multiple wives,” he said.

William stated that polygamy is not a bad thing. He believes Solomon’s wisdom is associated with his being polygamous. (Solomon has been described as the wisest man in the Bible)

” You want your husband to be as wise as Solomon, yet you want him to marry only one wife. How will he get that wisdom? Solomon’s wisdom didn’t come cheap. If one person wants to have one wife, fine, he wants more than one, fine,” he said.

He said this as part of discussions on Joy FM‘s Super Morning Show, following recent conversations on the topic which has been sparked by the second marriage of Nigerian Actor, Yul Edochie.

ALSO READ:

The actor made it public that he has a child with his second wife.

According to him, he and actress, Judy Austin, welcomed a son, although he did not reveal how long ago it was.

Subsequently, his first wife, May Edochie, who is obviously not happy about the incident replied: “May God judge you both.”

Social media went awash with comments on the matter. While some have expressed their disappointment in the actor for this act, others don’t see anything wrong with it.

Instead of condemning the act, William advised that people who find themselves in polygamous marriages should be encouraged to live in peace.

“We should rather encourage people to live in peace, single or multiple, than to have one person pretending to have one wife with multiple side chicks hiding somewhere. Let’s go back to our roots,” he said.

Another caller, Fafa, shared a similar view. He stated that it is long overdue for polygamy to be legalised.

“All our patriarchs in the Bible how many of them married one? Even the almighty Solomon who built the temple. Let’s face the fact and deal with it and let’s stop the pretense. It will help us,’ he stressed.

Abu Mohammed, another caller, who called from Juapong and disclosed that he is a product of a polygamous family said there was “no problem with polygamy (from experience and his membership with a polygamous family).”

He said nature itself has designed men to have more than one wife.

“Women can’t compete with men. As a woman, how many pregnancies can you carry at a time? But a man can impregnate more than one woman at a time.

He said “God has designed women in such a way that they are not as strong as men so they cannot marry more than one man. But as for the man, he can marry more than one woman.”

Bishop, on the other hand, shared a different view. Though he did not outrightly condemn polygamy, he believes sticking to one partner is the ideal practice.

“It depends on who is the player. If he [the man] thinks that he can afford to take care of his wives he can go in for more than one wife, but ideally, to get yourself to be Godly and to worship God well, marry one wife. So please let’s look at this and do what we will be comfortable with,” he said.

Let’s prioritise mentorship programmes in our schools – Right To Play Ghana urges https://www.adomonline.com/lets-prioritise-mentorship-programmes-in-our-schools-right-to-play-ghana-urges/ Sat, 25 Sep 2021 15:00:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2019756 Right To Play Ghana is urging the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and District/Municipal Education Directorates across the country to prioritise mentorship programmes in Ghanaian schools.

Project Officer at Right To Play Ghana, Julius Kwame Tsatsu, said children are well-empowered and motivated to aim high when they are exposed to experienced persons in society.

“When you look at our schools, you will notice that the boys are more likely than girls to continue with their education. This should not be the case. Our girls need the motivation and exposure to stay in school and rise through the ranks to occupy significant positions in the country and the world. This is possible when we intensify mentorship programmes across the country,” he said.

He made the statement during the launch of the Girls’ Mentorship Programme in collaboration with the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Education Directorate on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, at the Sunlodge Hotel, Tesano.

The Girls’ Mentorship Programme, a flagship initiative of Right To Play Ghana is under the four-year Partners in Play Project (P3) funded by The LEGO Foundation. The Partners in Play Project (P3) will empower Ghanaian children to become creative, engaged, and dedicated to lifelong learning.

Let’s prioritise mentorship programmes in our schools – Right To Play Ghana urges

The Programme aims at providing a safe space for Ghanaian girls and women to connect and share ideas and experiences.

MORE:

“The mentors will spend time with the girls and share relevant ideas and experiences. We don’t want this to be a one-off event so we are collaborating with the district education office to focus some attention on the Girls’ Mentorship Programme,” he said.

Addressing the audience at the launch, the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Education Director, Charles Odoom, said the Girls’ Mentorship Programme will empower and motivate the “vulnerable girls” in society.

“The issue of Girls empowerment and gender mainstreaming are key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and address issues relating to community development as a whole,” he noted.

Re-echoing the call made by Right To Play Ghana, Mr Odoom said: “mentorship needs to be happening in Ghanaian schools to empower girls to believe in themselves and their dreams. It needs to start at the formative ages, particularly in our classrooms.”

The Weija-Gbawe Municipal Education Director pledged the support of his office towards the advancement of the objectives of the Programme.

As part of the Girls’ Mentorship Programme, mentors will focus their efforts on guiding participants through the building of trust and modelling of positive behaviours.

Tema ECG on red alert https://www.adomonline.com/tema-ecg-on-red-alert/ Sat, 25 Sep 2021 09:33:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2019890 Management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Tema region is on red alert following recent attacks on its substations.

Over the last year, ECG has recorded several incidents around Tema Communities 7,8,9,10,11 and 12 where suspected thieves break into substations, vandalise transformers and make away with fuses.

District Manager, ECG Tema North, Tamara Asomani-Wiafe, providing update on the heartless act, asked residents around the substations to be more concerned and take steps to protect same.

“Please help us bring to book suspects who are going to our various transformer stations removing fuses thereby causing outages,” she pleaded.

She said residents need to be vigilant and approach anyone loitering around the substations.

“This criminal act is causing too much of inconvenience to the company and to our cherished customers,” she indicated.

READ ALSO:

According to her, the only way customers can enjoy quality service is when those behind the act are dealt with.

Last year, the company engaged Assembly members in the affected areas to get neighbourhood watchdogs to help arrest the perpetrators.

However, not a single suspect has been apprehended.

Despite the secured nature of the substations, these persons with criminal intent break the padlocks to have access to the premises.

She said in the case of Pole Mounted Transformers which can’t be destroyed, fuses are mostly stolen.

With security being a shared responsibility, ECG is asking for community involvement.

“ECG can’t have security men 24/7  to guard the transformers,  the community must also be on the look out for thieves, and arrest them for prosecution,” she appealed.

8 types of girls a guy usually dates before meeting his true love https://www.adomonline.com/8-types-of-girls-a-guy-usually-dates-before-meeting-his-true-love-2/ Fri, 24 Sep 2021 21:31:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2019691 “Experience is good” is the general opinion around, but is it good in terms of dating? Yes, it is.

While going through loads of women before landing in the land of coupledom may be a particularly mind-boggling experience, it does give you the option of looking back on those dates and to truly understand what qualities you search for in your partner.

Let’s go through the different kinds of women you may come across on your road to true love:

1. THE GIRL WHO WAS YOUR FIRST CRUSH

first-crush

This is the girl you usually meet in school during your teenage years and let me warn you now; it usually ends up in heart-break.

She was the one who made you realise that there was more to school than just books and football. She made you lose focus on your studies and made you bunk your first class.

She was the one for whom you first started caring about your looks. Then one day (a few months after dating may be) she dumps you or you dump her or maybe you just drift apart with unsaid, but mutual consent.

2. THE GIRL WHO PARTIES TOO HARD

Source

This girl is what you might term ‘The Party Animal.’

She gets seriously wasted at parties and doesn’t even recognise who you are. Then she ends up smooching one of her guy friends in front of you.

Her friends are fun, she is fun, but then you find yourself thinking, are you ready for so much fun?

3. THE GIRL WHO GOSSIPS TOO MUCH

girls-gossip

You have had enough interactions with girls to know that most of them love to gossip. However, this particular girl is the ‘mother of them all.’ Her focus is anybody, but you; her friend, your friends, her exes, her ex’s girlfriends and the list goes on.

You thought that she would leave the gossips out of your dates for her ‘girls’ day outs,’ but you couldn’t have been more wrong.

You think of dumping her, but then you get scared about what she might be telling people about you after you do: you dump her anyway.

4. THE GIRL WHO’S TOO SERIOUS WITH LIFE

Source

This kind of girls are usually straight-A students and are involved in all kinds of academic and social service clubs.

She barely has time for herself, let alone time to go on a romantic date with you or ask you how your day went.

Don’t worry about breaking up with her. She’ll probably make your love story into a short story for her summer English class and gain some extra credits.

MORE:

5. THE GIRL WHO’S JUST TOO BEAUTIFUL

beautiful-girl

Yes, your friends told you not to be so shallow and date a girl without brains and compassion and just good looks. Yes, you warned yourself never to go for the prettiest in the bunch, because she would be hard to keep to yourself.

However, you still snag her and can’t believe your luck, until you come to the conclusion that the only thing you love about her is her face.

It is okay to break up with her, because it is good for both of you in the long-run: relationships based on looks alone seldom last.

6. THE GIRL WHO’S ALWAYS JEALOUS

Source

You are walking down a road with your hands in hers and you smile at a middle-aged lady because you are polite that way. She squeezes your hand, works up a frown and asks you if you are into middle-aged women and not her and you just stare at her like “What did I do now?”

These kinds of women are usually very possessive and your life ends up being more a prison than one of romantic dinners and fun conversations.

They snoop around your home, check your call logs, hack into your face book and mail accounts and even answer your calls without telling you.

So, buck up and tell her it’s over before your life turns into a living hell!

7. THE GIRL WHO’S A FULL-ON DRAMA QUEEN

Sure your life is a roller-coaster ride with her beside yours; sure you don’t have a second of boredom with her in your life, but you suddenly start missing the days you could just relax and not be emotionally black-mailed into taking her shopping.

When you dump her, the scene is too dramatic to put in words, but just to take revenge from you may find her dating the guy next door to you.

8. THE GIRL WHO’S THE ONE

girl-the-one

And then ‘She’ comes along; the girl of your dreams; your perfect match. She’s everything you wanted in a life-partner – smart, pretty, humorous and most importantly, your heart beats both faster and slower when you are with her.

You want to make her the mother of your kids and even your parents are on board because they can see how happy she makes you.

She’s a definite keeper and you gladly forgive and forget all those girls in your past whose only role now seems to have been paving the way for your one true love!

Takoradi kidnapping case: Fresh medical exam confirms woman was never pregnant https://www.adomonline.com/takoradi-kidnapping-case-fresh-medical-exam-confirms-woman-was-never-pregnant/ Fri, 24 Sep 2021 12:20:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2019651 A second test conducted by the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital has confirmed that 29-year-old Josephine Panyin Mensah, who allegedly went missing, was never pregnant within the period, the police have said.

The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Police Service’s Public Affairs Directorate said the results of the Western Regional Hospital affirm the previous outcome which was conducted by the medical doctors at Axim Government Hospital.

ACP Kwesi Ofori, in an interview with Joy News, stressed that a thorough investigation is being carried out to attain the motives of the suspects who orchestrated the incident.

“The detailed result has been submitted to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department,” he said.

Meanwhile, some angry residents in Takoradi have rejected the police’s claims that their neighbour, who has now been declared a suspect, faked her pregnancy.

READ ALSO:

They also expressed dissatisfaction over the arrest of Josephine’s mother, husband, and one other person as accomplices in the alleged self-kidnapping case.

Clad in red, the residents chanted war songs and invoked curses on various authorities for making such claims.

However, ACP Ofori says the police will not be cowed into submission by street opinion.

Speaking on JoyNews on Thursday, ACP Kwesi Ofori said the service cannot make such medical conclusions independently but “relies on expert opinion” from doctors who are members of the Ghana Medical Association.

“The law of evidence and criminal procedure makes the police rely heavily on expert opinion should the matter appear before a court of competent jurisdiction. We will go by that expert opinion, and we will not be moved by street opinion,” he said.

About a week ago, a missing person flyer with a picture of Josephine Panyin Mensah began circulating on social media. It stated that she was nine months pregnant and had gone missing since September 16.

News later broke of her reappearance on the 21st of September 2021.

She was, however, found without a pregnancy or a baby.
