Honda Civic Type-R II Concept

Honda gives us a second glance at the future of the Civic Type-R at the 2014 Paris auto show.

iVTEC turbo

The Type-R II concept is powered by a turbocharged version of the automaker’s 2.0-liter iVTEC engine.

276+ horsepower

The iVTEC engine redlines at about 7,000 RPM, but output is expected to be in the neighborhood of 276 horsepower.

Front wheel drive

The hatchback puts its power to the ground through the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.

Adaptive suspension

Turbocharging isn’t the only new trick that the new Type-R has learned. It also now features an adjustable, adaptive suspension that features four settings for the street and track.

“+R” button

Pressing a new “+R” button on the Civic’s dashboard places the suspension, engine, throttle, and other systems in their most aggressive, track-ready settings.

Race ready

Honda maintains that the next Type-R will be a race car for the streets and is targeting the Nurburgring’s FWD record to prove it.

5-door configuration

Based on the Euro-Spec Honda Civic 5-door, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see this car in the US. We may, however, see its engine at some point beneath the hood of another Honda or Acura-branded car.

The widebody construction and aerodynamics spread the Type-R’s footprint and hunker the hatchback closer to the ground.
