Chief Executive Officer of Pinkberry Ghana, Dr. Kobbina Tuyee Awuah, has opened up about the family pressure he faced after choosing entrepreneurship over a more traditional academic and professional path.

Speaking on The Career Trail on Joy Learning TV and Joy News, he said his decision to enter the food and beverage business after graduating from Harvard was not immediately accepted by his father, who expected a different trajectory given his academic background.

“My dad was disappointed when I decided to sell ice cream after completing Harvard,” he revealed.

Dr. Awuah explained that coming from a highly academic family made the reaction more pronounced, as expectations naturally leaned toward conventional professional progression.

He, however, said he understood the response and did not hold it against him.

“Rightfully so, I probably would have done the same thing if it was my child,” he admitted.

According to him, such reactions are common in many African households, where academic success is often expected to translate into specific career paths.

“African parents are like that. You take it in good stride and keep moving,” he said.

Dr. Awuah added that although there was initial disappointment, his family eventually came to accept and appreciate his journey as the business grew, with success reshaping their perception over time.

“But now they are proud of how far I’ve come,” he stated.

He noted that success ultimately bridged the gap between doubt and acceptance.

“Once you become successful, they come around,” he noted.
