In a dramatic turn of events, a conniving man is alleged to have sold his own car only for him to steal it from the new owner two weeks later.
The 33-year-old Chido Abel Chifeku, from a suburb in Harare, is said to have resold the stolen car to another customer shortly after.
Chifeku was charged with theft as defined in Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 when he appeared before a magistrate.
A local tabloid reports that Chikefu was not asked to plead when he appeared in court. He was remanded in custody up to November 30.
It is the State’s case that on 15 October 2021, Chifeku sold his motor vehicle, a Toyota Raum to Irvine Muzenda who happens to be a teacher at Imvimila High School
Chifeku reportedly sold his car for US$1, 100 through his friend Yeukai Jimu to another high school teacher.
The court heard that the two parties agreed that Muzenda would pay US$600 to Chifeku and pay the remaining balance of US$500 by 31 December 2021.
After coming to an agreement, Chifeku is said to have handed over the car (which had no tyres at the time), its original registration papers and one key to Muzenda.
Since the car was in bad shape, Muzenda reportedly serviced it and parked it at his car wash.
However, on the 29th of October 2021, Chikefu allegedly went to the car wash and stole the car using a duplicate key.
It is further alleged that after stealing the car, Chikefu went on and sold it to another teacher, Muzi Dube of Kwite Primary school.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Chifeku’s arrest.
