Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Youth and Culture, Hon. Alex Kofi Agyekum, has expressed his disappointment in Coach James Kwesi Appiah on how he handled the Black Stars captaincy issue.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Mpohor Constituency expressed disagreement with the Black Stars coach based on the timing of his decision since “we have barely one month to the continental showpiece in Egypt.”
The spokesperson for Asamoah Gyan revealed that the striker decided to retire because the coach relied on spiritual predictions to strip him off the Black Stars captaincy.
Speaking to Asempa Sports, the MP said though the coach is the overall boss who takes decisions in the team, the decision on Gyan should have been made a long time ago or later after the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“Whatever the case, it is the prerogative of the coach [Kwesi Appiah] to decide on who to call and who shouldn’t be called, but who should be the Captain, the timing for such a decision is wrong,” he said.
“We are left with about one month to the AFCON and as a coach, it’s time to do your technical planning and conferences and not captaincy issues; to be frank, I don’t side with the coach’s decision and how he handled the whole issue is wrong. This decision should have come earlier and not at this time,” he added.
