Parliament House

A senior lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Dr Isaac Owusu Mensah, has said for the first time in the history of Ghana’s democracy, “we will have New Patriotic Party (NPP) President but with a Minority in Parliament if the data available to them does not change.”

Dr Mensah says National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament (MPs) have better chances of winning majority of the seats in Parliament if the findings available to them from their survey do not change before the 2020 elections.

A recent survey conducted by the research department of the University of Ghana showed that NDC legislators were performing better than their counterpart MPs from the NPP whilst sitting president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was preferred to former President John Dramani Mahama.

Commenting on the NDC parliamentary primaries on Adom FM’s Burning Issues on Monday, August 28, 2019, Dr Mensah advised the NPP not to protect incumbent MPs based on gender, institutional memory and other factors but allow the people to choose who they want.

“If the NPP forces some people in parliament to contest the national elections against the will of the people, they will lose in 2020,” he told host, Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom.

Director of Research and Elections for the NPP, Evans Nimako, speaking on the same show, said “the NPP has always demonstrated democracy at its apogee and we will allow everyone to freely contest in our upcoming primaries to choose who they want.

“President Akufo-Addo has been our flagbearer for the past three elections and there is none that he run unopposed so I don’t see where the NPP imposed a candidate on delegates,” he averred.

Commenting on the NDC primaries, Mr Nimako indicated that the said success of the NDC primaries was due to the good things they (NPP) have put in place for the NDC to learn from.
