The Adjen Kotoku market in the GA West Municipal Assembly in the Greater Accra Region, built under the erstwhile John Agyekum Kufuor administration, has been left to rot.
The project was a well-thought-out plan by the government in 2007 when it decided to relocate the people of old Fadama, popularly referred to as Sodom and Gomorrah, to Adjen Kotoku.
The market complex was built as part of a redevelopment project at an initial cost of GH¢172.2 million.
The new unoccupied Adjen Kotoku market was built by International Marine and Dredging Consultants for the Government of Ghana.
It comprises structures made up of two large sheds, rows of shops or stores numbering 95 and a place of convenience.
Other completed parts of the market complex are Kotoku Senior High School (SHS), health centre, police station and a fire station.
The market complex, built at a great cost, is gradually being overtaken by weeds, faeces and encroachers, with the shops being used as guest houses.
Adom Kasea reporter Prince Owusu Asiedu, who paid a visit to the market, spoke to some residents in the area who confirmed using some of the shops as guest houses, a place they have sex with girls in the area and some female students of Kotuku SHS.
The chief of Amoahman Adjen Kotoku, Okoromansah Nii Tackle Amoah VII called on the government to commission the market or allow them to take over the land and property.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Ga West, Mr Clement Wilkinson told Adom Kasea the Assembly is putting measures in place to commission the market.
