United Nations (UN) Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas has said the UN is willing and ready to support Ghana disband party militia.
According to Dr Chambas, the UN is on standby to save Ghana from the kind of unrest on-going in Burkina Faso which gets worse by the day.
“I should commend the initiative of President Akufo-Addo to broadly tackle vigilantism and the acceptance of former President Mahama and their parties to work collaboratively to deal with vigilantism before it becomes a cancer.
“The UN will remain at your disposal to facilitate non-partisan national conversations and lend its support to the on-going national efforts led by the National Peace Council,” he added.
Speaking at a public lecture in honour of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu on his centenary birthday on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, Dr Chambas urged political parties in Ghana to be dutiful in disbanding these militia groups.
He said “2020 will be a year of elections in West Africa as Cote D’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and Togo also hold presidential elections, we can therefore anticipate a politically tensed year associated with electioneering campaign.”
The UN Secretary General representative also charged the political class not to turn the youth of the country into a ticking time bomb but a workforce.
