Non-governmental organization, Sena Foundation in collaboration with Ga West Municipal Assembly have launched organized its maiden quiz competition for basic schools in the area.
This is as part of efforts to promote Science, Mathematics and Information Communication Technology (ICT) in basic schools.
Programmes Director at Sena Foundation, Ranford Kojo Baidoo said event to start in November was motivated by the declining interest of science, Maths and ICT education in Ghana.
He said the competition is to generate interest in basic schools in the Municipality.
Mr. Baidoo said the competition among the 24 basic schools in the area will help the students in the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
He said the first runner up will be awarded GHC3000, second and third runners up to get GHC2000 and GHC1000 respectively.
Mr. Baidoo said we lived in a Scientific and technological era, therefore, it was prudent to provide a level playing field for all children-of-school-going age to have access to teaching and learning materials that would enable them to achieve their aspirations in life.
Also, the Ga West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Clement Nii Lamptey Wilkinson was elated about Sena Foundation’s initiative.
He said the Assembly would support the youth, especially those pursuing Science-related courses, to develop their talents towards accelerated national development.
Mr. Wilkinson revealed that, they intend to start a similar competition between public and private schools.
He explained that a country with a high percentage of educated citizenry was richer, healthier and better positioned to manage its resources for the betterment of the people.
The Ga West MCE said a nation’s development is largely on technology that was why government is committed to developing the talents of the youth at an early age.
