The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has allayed the fears of Ghanaians about the possible presence of poisonous tilapia in the market.

It follows photos circulating in the media about some tilapia that are suspected to be poisonous at Asutsuare in the Volta region.

The reports say some market women are already smuggling the ‘poisonous’ tilapia into the market.

The situation has created fear and panic, with many calling on their relatives not to buy any tilapia until the situation is resolved.

But speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Friday, NADMO Coordinator of Shai Osudoko, Nana Asante Boateng said there was no cause for alarm.

He said the women seen in the picture bagging the poisonous tilapia have been arrested and the fishes seized.

Nana Asante Boateng noted that a sample of the fish has been taken to the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) for testing and the rest buried.

We have buried the poisonous tilapia and we have ensured they don’t get to the market pending the test results from FDA,” he added.

The Shai Osudoko NADMO Coordinator also described as false, claims that the poisonous tilapia incident was caused by the Bagri Dam spillage.

He said surveillance at Akosombo and other areas revealed that fish farmers are not experiencing the same situation.

Nana Asante Boateng suspects it could be an effect of a feed or a poisonous substance used in keeping the fishes in the river.

He appealed for calm, especially among lovers of tilapia while they work to bring the issue under control.
