The Ghana AIDS Commission has revealed that a total of 19,101 Ghanaians tested positive for AIDS in 2017.
Acting Director General of the Commission, Dr Atuahene Kyeremeh disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Wednesday.
According to him, a majority of the number who tested positive fall within the youth bracket, a situation he describes as very worrying.

Dr Kyeremeh also pegged the national prevalence rate at 1.67 with about 700 deaths recorded out of the 19,101 new infections.
“It is estimated that in 2017, new infections were 19,101 and majority of this number are youth and it’s very worrying,” he said.

He disclosed further that more youth were engaged in what he describes as “high-risk sex” where they engage in sex with multiple partners without using protection.

To Dr Kyeremeh, all is not lost for persons with the HIV virus because there are medications specially designed for such people.
He, therefore, urged the public to as a matter of urgency, check their HIV/AIDS status and take the necessary precautions.
