The Northern regional police command has arrested a man in connection with a suspected contract killing of a 12-year-old class five school girl of Nigerian descent at Gblo-kpalsi, a waterlogged suburb of Tamale.

The suspect, Chucku Nonya Ebunam, was rounded up at Asamankese in the Eastern region after he and others (still at large) allegedly gang raped before strangling the minor to death with a red handkerchief.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohamed Yussif Tanko confirming the arrest to Adom News said the 33-year-old suspect was arrested upon a tip-off and has been transferred to Tamale to assist investigation.

Earlier Police findings revealed that the girl was subjected to a suffocating sexual assault before being killed on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, when her parents, were away at work.

The victim according to the police was going to her parents’ store after closing from school when she was murdered after a suffocating sexual assault.

The attackers reportedly kidnapped the victim and dragged her to an abandoned structure where they committed the atrocity and fled.

Residents in the area said they heard loud screams and called the police to report a robbery incident.

The police arrived later and discovered lifeless body of the minor after locals led them to the crime scene.

The body was conveyed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital where she was pronounced dead and a quick postmortem checks revealed stains of blood and semen in the private part of the victim.

The 33-year-old suspect, according to police spokesman, ASP Yussif Tanko, fled the neighborhood immediately after the incident and went into hiding.

ASP Tanko said, the suspect, Chucku Ebunam who is now in their custody will face three charges; murder, rape and robbery, if he is found connected to the crime.
