Land guard on wanted list busted

A member of a 20-man gang of suspected land guards who inflicted gunshot wounds on two persons at Katapor, near Amasaman, has been arrested after five days of being on the run.

Abdul Razark Ahmed was arrested about 11 a.m. last Friday (January 18, 2019) from his hideout at Fise, near Amasaman.

The police retrieved a revolver pistol, fully loaded, and 40 pieces of nine-millimetre live ammunition from his room at Samsam Mepehoasem, near the Accra Technical University new campus, when his place of residence was searched.

Ahmed, who claims to be an Asafoatse of Kuntunse, near Amasaman, according to the police, had been on the wanted list of the Nsawam Police for his alleged involvement in a murder case.

The arrest of Ahmed brings to three the number of suspects arrested in connection with the said attack.

Two suspects were arrested earlier and have since been granted bail.

Land dispute

Briefing the Daily Graphic, the Amasaman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Mr. Francis Yiribaare, said the incident was believed to have been triggered by a dispute over a parcel of land and the suspected land guards were presumed to have been brought in from outside Amasaman.

He said about 9:40 a.m. on January 13, 2019, a complainant went to the Amasaman Police Station with an unconscious man in a taxi.

The wounded man was believed to have been shot by some unknown persons suspected to be land guards.

He said the victim was taken to the Amasaman Government Hospital but was referred to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

A few minutes later, another victim was also brought to the police station with a gunshot wound on his right thigh and he also reported that he had been attacked and shot by the same suspects who shot the first victim.

The second victim, who was also issued with a police medical form, was also taken to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

Enquiries

A team of policemen was immediately dispatched to the scene near a fuel filling station at Katapor where they found bloodstains on the ground, a pair of slippers belonging to one of the victims and five empty pistol shells.

Mr. Yiribaare said spot enquiries revealed that six out of the 20 suspects were on motorbikes and the rest were in a blue-black Toyota Tundra vehicle and they all wielded guns.

Intelligence

Through police intelligence, Ahmed was arrested by the Pokuase Police.

One of the victims is said to have identified Ahmed as one of the suspected land guards who shot him.

The police said during investigations, Ahmed could not tell the police the source of the weapon found in his room, as his narrative was conflicting

Mr. Yiribaare urged the public who might have fallen victim to Ahmed’s criminal activities to contact the police to assist with investigations.
