A survivor of the fatal accident that claimed 57 lives at Ampoma on the Kintampo-Tamale highway in the Bono East Region has exclusively recounted his nightmarish experiences since the accident.

Aziz Mohammed who was travelling in the company of two of his brothers – Osman Innussah and Wasiru Saani, said he survived a night that may live with him for the rest of his life including being bathed in the blood of others.

Osman, according to Aziz’s narration, was stuck under the wreckage of the crashed bus and kept calling on him for help but all he could do was to look on helplessly till he passed.

Among the horror, he has been experiencing since the accident, is hearing the voices of his brothers, Osman and Wasiru, in his sleep.

These experiences including seeing body parts scattered by his side on the night of the accident have combined to translate into his trauma.

Aziz narrated the emotional details of the accident when he spoke exclusively on Adom FM’s morning show “Dwaso Nsem” Wednesday.

Aziz said he was asleep when the accident occurred but confirmed even though the bus made an hour’s stop at Kumasi, there was no change in driver until the accident happened.

“When our bus moved from Accra to Tamale, I was asleep. In fact, we left Accra around 4 pm and got to Kumasi at 10 pm but the same driver drove again to Tamale after we spent an hour in Kumasi. Since I was asleep, I didn’t see what happened,” he narrated.

It takes approximately 13 hours to travel by bus from Accra to Zibilla, where Aziz and his brothers’ bus was headed.

Aziz said the driver of the bus did not take any sleep even when they made the stop in Kumasi.

According to him, only seven people including himself survived the accident but by the time they, the survivors, could receive any medical help, one more person had died.

The accident which occurred on Friday, March 22, involved a VVIP bus with registration number GT 3915-17 and a KIA Granbird bus with registration number GT 5694-18.

There were 22 survivors, who were taken to the Jema
District Hospital, Kintampo Municipal Hospital and Techiman Municipal Hospital
for treatment.

Most of the dead were burnt beyond recognition, forcing authorities to give the bodies a mass burial.
