The Minister for Interior Ambrose Dery has explained the January 7 constitutional holiday is a day to celebrate all Ghanaians hence the need for every citizen to embrace this day.
Earlier this month, a bill on government’s proposal of new holidays to be observed in the country was laid in parliament.
The government sought to amend the public holiday Act 2001 (Act 601) with the introduction of the ‘Constitution Day’ to be observed on January 7.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem show, Mr Ambrose stated that Ghanaians should be able to accept this day just as we do since it is to celebrate particular people in the society.
“January 7 holiday is not for any individual but to acknowledge the achievements of the general Ghanaian populace for our success in a multi-party democracy and our collective efforts as a country in ensuring that the tenets of democracy, the rule of law and the principles of constitutionalism are upheld.”
The amendment of the public holiday Act 2001 (Act 601) also proposed that the Africa Union day, marked on May 25, and Republic Day on July 1 be made commemorative days.

January 7, 1993, was the day the current Constitution came into force for the Fourth Republic of Ghana. This was after its approval at a Referendum held on April 28, 1992 and also the day new Heads of State are sworn into office.
The 7th January which is to be declared as public holiday indeed has no any political significance.
