Former President, John Mahama has described the call by President Akufo-Addo for the two major parties to dialogue on disbanding party militias as “too simplistic” even though he stated he was delighted in the approach.

“The approach is “good”, it was “too simplistic, needs time and should be structured properly.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo, on Thursday, while delivering the 2019 State of the Nation’s Address urged the two main political parties to meet and discuss the issue of political vigilantism and how to deal with it.

“I want to use the platform of this Message to make a sincere, passionate appeal to the leaders of the two main political parties in our country, NPP and NDC, to come together, as soon as possible, preferably next week, to agree on appropriate measures to bring an end to this worrying and unacceptable phenomenon of vigilantism in our body politic.”

However speaking on Accra-Based Radio Gold’s Morning Show on Friday, Mr Mahama stated the fight against vigilantism should be timely and properly structured.

“The two parties alone can’t deal with this issue. The vigilantes are embedded in the security services and so if you said we should disband, it must involve other stakeholders. The president should take the initiative because it was the introduction of Akufo-Addo’s Bolga Bull Dogs among others that brought about the vigilantism”.

The former President added the menace has become complex and demands the attention of more players and stakeholders to get on board.

“It will take other stakeholders like the Peace Council to disband this. NPP and NDC alone can’t dissolve it. We should find a way of delisting them from the National Security”.
