Residents of Bunkpurugu in the Bunkpurugu Yunyoo District of the Northern region are appealing to government for a district hospital following the increase in maternal mortality in the area.
The residents claim pregnant women in the district died while on their way to deliver due to long distance and bad road network.
Some residents who spoke to Adom News claim scores of women have perished either on their way to distance places to give birth or through traditional delivery method.
Bunkpurugu Yunyoo is a district of peasant farmers with no basic amenities including a district hospital and locals are living in an extreme poverty.
A mother Rebecca Fikaa, told Adom News it is scary to be pregnant in the area due to the unavailability of district hospital.
She therefore pleaded with government to come to the aid of the helpless pregnant women and sick people in the district.
“In fact we have big problem in Bunkpurugu here. Because we don’t have District Hospital here and our roads are not good, always pregnant women and sick people keep dying because we don’t have hospital here so we are appealing to the government to come to our aid” she said.
The Paramount Chief of Bunkpurugu, Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong also expressed frustration at the situation.
He bemoaned how pregnant women are forced to travel miles to another district for health care delivery.
Alhaji Abuba Nasinmong called on government to intervene.
