The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has called for sponsorship for lesser known sports as a means of preventing their eventual collapse.
The Otumfuo made these remarks at a ceremony to hand over a newly refurbished Achimota Golf Course to the management of Achimota Golf Club.
The project was sponsored by Tullow Ghana at the cost of three million dollars.
“You see, I also love football and after all am the owner of the champion club Asante Kotoko and am not sure the Black Stars have more devoted support than I, but surely there can be no justification for devoting all the resources of the nation to football, and abounding or neglecting all others especially when all the records shows that the greatest achievement in sports has come not from football but from sports like athletics, boxing and tennis among others”, he counselled.
He thus mentioned that his passion for the development of Golf is his clear message to Ghanaians on the need to focus on other disciplines.
“I want to call for a new direction and for a new commitment to the development of sports in Ghana.
“We should not see sports in terms of only winning medals; we should use sports as physical recreation to build a strong and physically mentally fit and athletic community to be able to fight off many diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and hearts attack. Most of this can be prevented or control by simple physical exercises.”
