The Ghana Police Service has said that the bloody clash between Konkombas and Dagombas at the Konkomba market leading to two deaths and several injuries within the Agbogbloshie market in Accra on Tuesday should not be linked to any political rivalry.
According to the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident is strictly a criminal case and not politically motivated one.
“We have openly acknowledged and are aware of criminal dens in Agbogbloshie and we have been effective in tracking the criminals down. I want the public to know that the issue is a criminal case and not politically motivated one.
“When the incident happened, the first time information we had revealed that it is criminal and so we cannot state whether it is political or not and so allow the police to do its work,” he said on Adom FM’s Morning Show “Dwaso Nsem” Wednesday.
Superintendent Cephas Arthur’s comment is in reaction to the bloody clash between the two tribes at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra.
At least two people have been confirmed dead with three in critical condition after some Konkombas and Dagombas clashed Tuesday.
Details of the cause of the clash are sketchy, but some people are attributing it to an old political and ethnic rivalry between members of the two tribes.
However, Superintendent Cephas Arthur believes there should be a holistic approach to ending the violent clashes in Agbogbloshie and not only military intervention.
He said so far one person has been arrested in connection with the bloody clash adding that calm has returned to the place.
He therefore called on all stakeholders to get involved and bring the situation under control.
