The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has taken a stance against hospitals with outstanding bills.
They have issued demand notice and threatened disconnection from the national grid if payments are not done within 72 hours.
A total of 91 health facilities across the country owe ECG, with a combined outstanding amount totaling GH¢261 million.
Among the notable hospitals facing potential disconnection are the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, Ridge Hospital in the Greater Accra region, Komfo Anokye and Manhyia Government Hospitals in the Ashanti region, Ho Teaching Hospital in the Volta region, and Kyebi Government Hospital in the Eastern region.
This move is part of ECG’s broader strategy to recover customer debts and strengthen its operational capacity.
The Communications Manager for ECG in the Ashanti Region, Grace Garshong said issuing demand notices was the company’s final recourse.
She explained that, despite regular billing and communication efforts with these facilities, debts remained unresolved.
“We have now given them demand notice after they have received their bills for some time. And it is after 72 hours that if they do not pay we will do the disconnection. …This is almost like the last resort before disconnection. We’ve spoken to them; they have received several bills already and on our bills, we give a time that you will have to come and pay, and they haven’t” Ms. Garshong said on Citi FM.
She further clarified that, the demand notice serves as a warning gives the hospitals a 72-hour window before disconnection.
However, Ms. Garshong said if payment is not forthcoming, disconnection remains the ultimate consequence.
