Speaking to reporters after hours of legal and police proceedings, lawyer and NPP Member of Parliament Andy Appiah-Kubi revealed that Wontumi fell ill during the interrogation and was subsequently transferred to a hospital for medical attention.

“My client has been taken to the hospital for medical treatment,” he said. “We haven’t finished with the interrogation, so we will come back to continue — hopefully tomorrow, if his condition improves. Otherwise, he will remain there until doctors discharge him.”

The dramatic turn of events follows the arrest of Chairman Wontumi under what NPP leaders have described as “intimidatory” circumstances.

According to party officials, Wontumi initially honoured a police invitation and was at the CID headquarters responding to questions when he was suddenly whisked away by heavily armed, masked officers and detained for further investigation.

While details of the allegations remain unclear, Mr Appiah-Kubi stated that the police had “preferred some allegations” against his client, to which he had already responded. However, the interrogation was interrupted due to his deteriorating health.

In a parallel development, Mr Appiah-Kubi also disclosed that a writ of summons from Exim Bank was served on Wontumi earlier in the day, introducing a civil legal dimension to the unfolding case.

“We have also received this afternoon a writ of summons from Exim Bank, and we are going to respond to the pleadings tomorrow,” he said. “We are very hopeful that we’ll be able to mount a defence.”

He was keen to distinguish between the civil and criminal aspects of the ongoing issues.

“This is one of a supposed criminal investigation, but I am confident that we will be able to put up a defence,” he stated. “We consider the Exim Bank issue a civil matter, and that’s how we will respond to it in court.”

Chairman Wontumi’s hospitalisation adds a new layer of tension to a politically charged situation that has already triggered strong reactions from within the NPP.

Several party leaders, including National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, have denounced the arrest as politically motivated and reminiscent of the “dark days” of political intimidation.

As the party awaits further updates on Wontumi’s health and legal status, Mr Appiah-Kubi insisted the NPP will continue to cooperate with the process but will not be silenced.

“We’re cooperating. We believe in the rule of law,” he said.

The party says it will provide further updates as events unfold.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by EOCO operatives shortly after leaving the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Accra, where he had earlier been questioned over allegations of illegal mining activities, including operations in forest reserves without authorisation.

His arrest prompted a swift reaction from party supporters, who gathered at EOCO’s headquarters to show solidarity.

Among them were senior party officials, including the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, and National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye.

Currently, Chairman Wontumi is being interrogated by EOCO officials. It remains unclear how long the questioning will last or whether he will be released or detained overnight.

According to reports from JoyNews’ Latif Iddrisu, at least four armed EOCO officers have been stationed at the gate, preventing supporters from entering the premises as the situation unfolds.

The precise reasons for EOCO’s intervention remain undisclosed.

I was the one – Adwoa Safo clears the air on impersonation in parliament [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-the-one-adwoa-safo-clears-the-air-on-impersonation-in-parliament-listen/ Tue, 18 Mar 2025 20:41:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2516288 Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has addressed the controversy surrounding her presence in Parliament during the 2022 budget vote.

This was after rumours circulated that a woman seen in the House was not her, but rather a relative who resembled her.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Adwoa Safo confirmed that it was indeed her who was present on the day of the vote.

She explained that she had recently returned from the United States and was still recovering from childbirth.

“I was the one seen in Parliament that day. I had just delivered a baby, so I was heavier than usual. Those who claimed it wasn’t me were simply orchestrating a plot to tarnish my image” she said.

ADWOA SARFO ON BEING THE ONE IN PARL

Adwoa Safo had previously been granted leave by President Akufo-Addo, beginning in August 2021, for personal reasons.

Although her leave was supposed to end on August 31, 2021, it was extended due to her inability to resume her duties.

Following her absence from Parliament, suspicions grew when a woman, believed to be Adwoa Safo, appeared during the vote for the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.

“The rumors about it not being me are just part of the deliberate attempt to discredit me,” she added.

The controversy deepened when then-Minority members alleged that the woman seen voting was not the MP, but someone who looked like her.

Adwoa Safo, however, firmly dismissed these claims, reiterating that it was indeed her who returned to vote on the Budget.

Renowned journalist Kofi Adomah Nwanwani has shared his first public statement following a tragic incident that nearly cost him his sight.

He revealed he is enduring severe pain and a constant headache, making it difficult for him to rest or sleep despite multiple medical treatments.

“I want to talk before anything happens. I’m in severe pain with my head aching badly, but I need to speak out before anything happens,” he said, visibly emotional.

The broadcaster was injured during a musketry display in Dormaa in December 2024 when gunpowder residue struck his eye.

Despite the injury, he remained committed to covering the festival, even traveling to Dubai for treatment.

However, Kofi expressed disappointment that his people had abandoned him during his recovery and alleged attempts by some traditional leaders in Dormaa to cover up the incident to avoid public embarrassment.

“If anybody will do this to me, I didn’t expect it to come from Bono people,” he lamented.

Despite the setbacks, Kofi expressed gratitude to God for sparing his life and thanked Ghanaians for their prayers and support.

Meet George Mensah, the visually impaired man defying all odds to chase his dream [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/meet-george-mensah-the-visually-impaired-man-defying-all-odds-to-chase-his-dream-video/ Wed, 29 Jan 2025 16:57:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2498493 A visually impaired man, George Ekow Mensah, is determined to defy all odds and stand tall in the world of technology.

A resident of Atico, a suburb in Kaneshie, Accra, George revealed on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Wednesday that he was not born blind and lived a normal life.

However, his life took a complete turn during his time at Emit Electronics Institute, a technical school.

“It was examination week, and we were going to write a second paper after dinner when I felt a fluid in my eye. After I opened my eye, I couldn’t see again, and while undergoing treatment, I lost sight in the second eye.

“I was told it was retina detachment, but all attempts to restore my sight have proven futile despite two surgeries,” he stated.

According to him, he currently has an 11-year-old child who is also blind and has undergone two surgeries but is still unable to see.

“It has not been easy for us, and I always have sleepless nights because life in this condition is very tough. I was depending on my mum for survival, but she also passed, and now I have to fend for myself and my son,” he said.

Despite these struggles, George disclosed that he has, on his own, been able to learn laptop repairs and the mounting of accessories from scratch.

He explained that he used Siri as a guide after being gifted an iPhone, which is now broken, forcing him to resort to Android, which does not provide the same level of assistance.

“My friends, who know my abilities, bring their laptops for repairs and also refer me to others. That is how I survive. It is my desire to get a shop to attract more customers,” he appealed.

For his 11-year-old son, George said it would be his greatest joy to enroll him at the Akropong School for the Blind.

“We are discriminated against due to our condition, but for me, I’m old and okay, but I do not want my son to struggle in the future, hence the desire to take him to school. We have been going to the Social Welfare Department for support since 2018, but they gave us a fufu machine last year,” he revealed.

As part of its first impact project for 2025, the Ekosii Sen crew is currently raising funds to make George’s dream a reality.

Donations can be sent to 0544334714, with the account name Dominic Kissie Yeboah.

She attributed this to the strict disciplinary rules of the school, which limited interactions with male students from other schools.
Zanetor said her focus was on academics during her time at SHS not boys.
She explained that, visiting days in Wesley Girls were regulated with a structured registration process, which further restricted casual interactions.
“During your time at Wesley Girls, did any guy ever approach you with a compliment about your beauty, expressing a desire to date you or be your boyfriend?”
Zanetor, maintaining her composure, replied, “No.
She noted that “at Wesley Girls, visiting days were restricted; you couldn’t just turn up unannounced. Upon arrival, there was a procedure involving a table manned by senior students where visitors had to register their details and whom they intended to visit, after which the student would be summoned. So, it was a structured process. And it wasn’t exclusive to me, by the way. That was the standard protocol. Perhaps I was simply naive, but the opportunities for interaction were indeed limited” she said in an interview on Starr FM.

It is not immediately known how much the school owes.

However, ECG officials is said to have cut the power on Monday afternoon.

The entire campus plunged into darkness as of 08:40 pm on Monday, February 19, 2024.

A teacher who spoke under the condition of anonymity expressed grave concerns about the situation.

“Today is the saddest day in my life as a teacher with over 31 years of experience. I have never witnessed anything like this before. We received a call that ECG officials were on campus to disconnect the school due to some indebtedness.

“What pains me is that the teachers staying on campus, who use prepaid meters, have also been disconnected. Currently, we have about 3,000 students in school, and this is the situation we find ourselves in. If something happens to any of the students, who will be held responsible?” he told Accra-based Citi News.

Students and teachers who reside on campus he disclosed are frustrated by the development.

He has therefore appealed to ECG to restore power for their safety and adverse impact on teaching and learning.

“We called the officials, and they insisted that they were following orders from above to disconnect us due to the amount we owe. We don’t even know the exact amount, and we are not the ones supposed to pay it.

“Despite our efforts to prevent this situation, they never listened. I appeal to the ECG leaders to consider the students. I urge them to come back and take the necessary steps,” he pleaded.

Obiri Boahen threatens legal action against Dormaahene https://www.adomonline.com/obiri-boahen-threatens-legal-action-against-dormaahene/ Wed, 20 Dec 2023 21:44:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2335091 A former New Patriotic Party (NPP) deputy General Secretary, Nana Obiri Boahen, has threatened legal action against the Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II.

This comes after the Paramount Chief announced that, seven traditional leaders hence forth have severed ties with the Berekum Traditional Council.

The decision he explained, is in connection with an injunction initiated by the Council which restrained him from attending the funeral of the late Berekum chief in November.

The Dormaahene who is the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs made the declaration at the 2023 end-of-year review meeting.

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II said the decision will be rescinded if only the Berekum Traditional Council comes out with a better explanation.

Reacting to this, Obiri Boahen stated unequivocally that, the Dormaahene has no authority to make such pronouncement.

Accrding to him, the right thing for the chief to have done is a fair hearing before making a decision.

The NPP man has therefore vowed to head to court to challenge the decision as a native from the Bono region and legal practitioner.

“I am not the spokesperson for the Berekum Tradition Council but he can’t cut ties before asking them to appear. Why did he mention only seven chiefs? What about the rest? This is much ado about nothing” he fumed.

“This is fear mongering, empty noise and it must stop. I will go to court before Christmas to have the decision quashed,” Nana Obiri Boahen stated in an interview on Accra-based Peace FM.

Fetish priest arrested in attempt to stop demolition at Nima [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/fetish-priest-arrested-in-attempt-to-stop-demolition-at-nima-video/ Thu, 17 Aug 2023 07:24:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2284343 It was a dramatic turn of events after a yet-to-be-identified fetish priest attempted to stop a demolition exercise by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) at Nima.

The fetish priest was arrested by the police on Wednesday after he was reportedly invited by residents to halt the process.

A video from the scene that has gone viral on social media captured a visibly furious-looking fetish priest being followed by a crowd who cheered him on.

The fetish priest was spotted in his underpants, with a red cloth wrapped around his waist, and herbs coiled around his neck, briskly walking with powder covering his face.

Amidst the cheers from the crowd, he was seen pouring out the components of a bottle he was holding in his hand, perceived to be local gin, ‘akpeteshiie, as he approached the demolition site.

In a confrontation with policemen who were present to supervise the exercise, an order for him to retreat fell on deaf ears.

One of the policemen, believed to be the leader of the team, then ordered for him to be whisked away.

The action, however, did not deter him from protesting the demolition as he screamed out his opposition, saying this is the property of Bio.

The video shared by a Twitter user, Aboagye has attracted hilarious reactions.

Corruption at Passport Office: Minister sacks overstayed officers https://www.adomonline.com/corruption-at-passport-office-minister-sacks-overstayed-officers/ Tue, 15 Aug 2023 10:26:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2283597 Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has expressed worry over the continuous extortion and corruption at the Passport Office.

On the back of this, Madam Ayorkor Botchwey has relieved staff who were seconded to the passport office of their duties.

The Minister has directed that effective Monday, August 21, 2023, these employees should not report to work because they have been changed.

Notably, she cautioned employees who had worked at the Passport Office for more than a year to stay off work as part of measures to bring sanity.

“Everybody who has been here for more than one year, from Monday on, please do not come back because you have been changed. We want to restore some sanity. Every time politicians are corrupt, meanwhile, it is some public civil servants who will do things that shouldn’t be done, and then they will be put on politicians,” she directed.

This was after a visit to the passport office on Monday, where the Minister expressed her shock at the unfair procedures that employees there subject applicants to.

She bemoaned that, through the collaborative effort of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the Ministry has been able to digitise the passport acquisition process.

However, some people are deliberately manipulating the system for their gain.

The Minister hinted investigations have commenced into the criminal activities with some names already coming up.

The investigations, she noted, has shown the existence of a network that was working with Passport Office employees, adding that she was shocked at the widespread notion that only politicians and her ministry were responsible for corruption.

“It is disheartening that while blame is often laid at the feet of politicians, it is, in fact, some public servants who engage in these wrongful acts, which are then mistakenly attributed to politicians,” she lamented.

She added investigations into the “goro boys,” who prey on applicants with the help of office staff, are still ongoing and moving forward.

The Minister said she is convinced there is cooperation with certain personnel at the Passport Office because these outside players cannot work alone.

She has, therefore, issued a warning that those found guilty will face legal action as a deterrent to others.
