Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Osei Owusu said the NPP requires a national chairman with the level of firmness exhibited by NDC Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, whom he credited with making the opposition party more attractive, particularly to the youth.

He noted with concern that some young people in his area are drifting from the NPP to the NDC, attributing the trend to leadership and organisational weaknesses within the party.

According to him, internal elections often favour popularity over competence, a situation he believes the party must urgently address.

Mr. Osei Owusu therefore called for a deliberate search for competent leaders and endorsed former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko as someone capable of restoring discipline and strengthening the party, should he decide to contest for the position of national chairman.

“To bring back the NPP’s appeal, we need to do things differently and restore discipline. I believe Boakye Agyarko fits the kind of leadership the party needs at this time,” he said.

Whether or not Daddy Lumba left a will – Abuasuapanyin breaks silence https://www.adomonline.com/whether-or-not-daddy-lumba-left-a-will-abuasuapanyin-breaks-silence/ Fri, 23 Jan 2026 16:45:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2623047 The family head of the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has stated that the latter’s lawyers are best placed to discuss matters concerning his will and the distribution of his properties.

Victor Kofi Owusu explained that he is not responsible for managing the musician’s estate, insisting that such matters rest solely with the lawyers and the immediate family.

His comments come amid reports that the High Court in Accra has confirmed that no will has been deposited by Daddy Lumba at the Probate and Administration Division.

An official registry search, reportedly conducted as part of the legal process to manage the celebrated musician’s estate, found no record of a last will. In a response dated January 19, 2026, at 2:37 p.m., the court stated that no will filed by Charles Kwadwo Fosuh exists in its system.

However, speaking on Adom FM’s midday news Kasiebo is Tasty, the family head, widely known as Abuasuapanyin TuPac, said he has not received any court documents concerning the late musician’s properties and has not been contacted about any process to begin sharing them.

“No court documents have been brought to my attention, neither have I received any. Daddy Lumba’s body belongs to the family, but when it comes to the sharing of his properties, that has to do with the lawyers,” he stated.

According to him, the family’s priority was to give the musician a dignified burial, and that responsibility has now been fulfilled.

“All the things he asked us to do for him, including covering his face with a veil, we did them. The children can testify, and even his lawyers can confirm,” he said.

Abuasuapanyin TuPac explained that discussions about inheritance can only happen after all relevant parties come together, including Daddy Lumba’s children and spouse, but that process has not yet started.

“Since the funeral is over, what is left is for all of us, including the children, to meet before the properties are shared. But how do I get everyone together? You all know the first wife did not attend the funeral,” he added.

He stressed that he is not responsible for inviting anyone for estate discussions and that the sharing of property is not his role.

“I am not the one to share his properties. That is the work of the lawyers. Nobody has called me about sharing anything, and I don’t even know whether they will call me when they are ready,” he said.

Touching on speculation about a will, the family head said he could not confirm whether Daddy Lumba left one behind.

“I cannot say he left a will or not. What I know is that I have no hand in the sharing of his properties. I have already made provision for my wife and children, so Lumba’s wife and children must also come together and do the needful,” he noted.

For now, Abuasuapanyin TuPac says his only concern was ensuring peace and a proper burial for the music icon, which he has achieved.

“I have always wanted peace, and my priority was to bury my nephew. I have done that,” he said.

Gomoa Wassa chiefs angry with Police over release of assassination suspects https://www.adomonline.com/gomoa-wassa-chiefs-angry-with-police-over-release-of-assassination-suspects/ Fri, 23 Jan 2026 16:22:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2623039 Chiefs and residents of Gomoa Wassa in the Gomoa West District of the Central Region have expressed outrage at the Gomoa Dawurampong Divisional Police Command over the release of suspects linked to an alleged assassination attempt on the town’s Gyasehene.

The incident reportedly occurred about two weeks ago when unknown assailants attempted to attack the chief.

Police subsequently arrested three suspects out of an initial nine persons of interest. However, the chiefs claim the suspects were later released without being arraigned in court.

Speaking to Adom News, the traditional authorities said they are deeply concerned about the decision, stressing that it has heightened fear and insecurity in the community.

They allege that some of the released suspects have issued threats against traditional leaders, increasing tension among residents.

The chiefs are calling on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene urgently, warning that the situation could escalate if authorities fail to act swiftly.

Samuel Kwabena Obo, the youth leader of Gomoa Wassa, said the town is currently living in fear, noting that residents are uncertain about what might happen next. He appealed for an increased security presence, including possible military support, to restore calm.

Peaceful Aidoo, the Assembly Member for Gomoa Wassa–Gomoa Nkran Electoral Area, echoed these concerns, adding that peace has eluded the community since the suspects’ release. She urged the IGP and police authorities to take immediate action to prevent further disturbances.

Attempts to obtain a response from the Gomoa Dawurampong Divisional Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Daddy Lumba left no will – High Court https://www.adomonline.com/daddy-lumba-left-no-will-high-court/ Fri, 23 Jan 2026 15:14:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622995 The High Court in Accra has confirmed that there is no registered will for the late highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, at the Probate and Administration Division’s registry.

The confirmation followed an official registry search conducted as part of the legal process to manage the estate of the celebrated artist.

The search aimed to determine whether the late musician had filed a will with the High Court, including details such as the filing date, the person who submitted it, and the lawyer who prepared it.

However, the registry’s response, dated January 19, 2026, at 2:37 pm, revealed that “there is no record of any will deposited by Daddy Lumba.”

The document, signed and stamped by the Registrar of the Probate and Administration Division, confirmed that no such record exists in the court’s registry.

The absence of a registered will means the estate of the late musician may have to be administered under Ghana’s intestate succession laws unless a will emerges from another source.

This development introduces additional legal considerations for the family and representatives managing his affairs.

Daddy Lumba, renowned for his enduring contributions to Ghanaian highlife music, passed away leaving behind a rich musical legacy. His death continues to draw attention to the management of his estate, especially given his status as one of Ghana’s most influential music icons.

NPP race: Bawumia wasn’t happy during peace pact signing – Sammi Awuku https://www.adomonline.com/npp-race-bawumia-wasnt-happy-during-peace-pact-signing-sammi-awuku/ Fri, 23 Jan 2026 10:37:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622850 Akuapem North MP and a leading member of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, Sammi Awuku, says the former Vice President is unsettled by what he considers unfair developments ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s January 31, 2026 presidential primaries.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, Mr Awuku revealed that Dr Bawumia’s mood at Thursday’s peace pact signing ceremony reflected deeper concerns about the conduct of the Presidential Election Committee and how the rules of the race are being enforced.

“On Thursday, I monitored the peace pact signing, and obviously Dr Mahamudu Bawumia wasn’t happy. He has concerns about some developments which he believes show that the Presidential Election Committee and the party are not creating a level playing field,” Mr Awuku said.

He added that the former Vice President is worried that certain committee decisions could affect the long-term unity and fortunes of the NPP.

“If you saw his demeanour, he is human and won’t pretend when all is not well. Some of the decisions of the Presidential Election Committee, he believes, have serious implications for the future of the party,” Mr Awuku noted.

He stressed that Dr Bawumia’s posture should not be misinterpreted as defiance but as a sign of concern for fairness and internal cohesion within the party.

The NPP’s peace pact signing, held at Alisa Hotel in Accra, brought together all five flagbearer aspirants, party executives, and stakeholders.

The ceremony was aimed at ensuring a peaceful, respectful, and united contest. Aspirants committed to campaign without insults, intimidation, or violence, and to accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith for the sake of party unity.

Former President Nana Akufo-Addo, who addressed the gathering, reminded aspirants that the NPP is “bigger than any individual” and urged them to place the party’s future above personal ambition.

Despite this symbolic show of unity, concerns continue to emerge over the enforcement of campaign rules, access to party structures, and what some describe as uneven application of disciplinary measures.

Mr Awuku’s comments suggest that Dr Bawumia’s camp believes the credibility of the primaries depends not only on signing peace agreements but also on ensuring all aspirants compete on a fair and transparent platform.

The suspect, identified as Josiah Elorm Kwame Amezado, was picked up following intelligence indicating that a self-styled fetish priest in the area was allegedly engaged in criminal activities and in possession of a firearm, posing a potential threat to public safety.

A search conducted in the suspect’s room led to the retrieval of quantities of United States dollar notes in one-hundred-dollar denominations, suspected to be counterfeit.

Police also recovered a pair of handcuffs, a black vest, a Kuzey A100 blank pistol, and fifty-eight rounds of 9mm blank ammunition.

The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue to establish the source and authenticity of the currency, as well as the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm and other recovered items.

Police say further updates will be provided as investigations progress.

Any candidate who contests on the NPP’s ticket will lose abysmally in 2028 – Nana Yaa Jantuah https://www.adomonline.com/any-candidate-who-contests-on-the-npps-ticket-will-lose-abysmally-in-2028-nana-yaa-jantuah/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 19:27:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622672 Presidential staffer Nana Yaa Jantuah has predicted a heavy defeat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections, insisting that any candidate who contests on the party’s ticket will lose decisively.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, she argued that the NPP is still reeling from its loss in the 2024 elections and is not in a position to mount a credible comeback.

“The biggest opposition party in Ghana should not be taking part in the upcoming elections. The aftershocks of the 2024 elections are still affecting them, making it difficult for them to focus. Instead, they should take the time to rebuild their party. It would be more strategic for them to field candidates for Parliament rather than for the presidency in 2028,” she said.

Nana Yaa Jantuah highlighted improvements in the current economic situation under President John Mahama, citing lower fuel prices and her own experience filling her car for as little as GH¢200.

She also praised President Mahama’s performance, noting that he has been recognised with the Kwame Nkrumah Leadership Award in West Africa.

“In light of the current challenges within the NPP, they are unlikely to succeed. Many Ghanaians see the party as still facing internal difficulties. Meanwhile, the situation in the country is improving; petrol prices have decreased, and President Mahama has even received the Kwame Nkrumah Leadership Award for his commendable work in West Africa,” she stated.

Police arrest key suspect in Wapuli kidnapping case https://www.adomonline.com/police-arrest-key-suspect-in-wapuli-kidnapping-case/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 19:25:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622529 The Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) has arrested a key suspect in the ongoing investigation into a kidnapping syndicate operating in the Wapuli area.

The arrest marks a major breakthrough after weeks of sustained intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling the criminal network.

The development follows a December 6, 2025 operation in which police rescued a 42-year-old man who had been abducted and held by a four-member syndicate in Wapuli. During that operation, three suspects were arrested, while one accomplice managed to escape.

Police investigations revealed that the victim sustained life-threatening cutlass wounds while in captivity. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of GH¢100,000, of which GH¢90,000 was paid before the victim was released. Police later retrieved GH¢70,000 of the ransom amount.

Determined to apprehend all members of the syndicate, the PID intensified surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts to track down the remaining suspect.

That effort paid off in the early hours of Tuesday, January 20, 2026, when officers arrested Hoyeefe Amadu, identified as the fourth and key suspect, at his hideout in a village about 10 kilometres outside Watugu, a suburb of Gushegu.

The three earlier suspects are currently on remand in prison custody and are expected to reappear before the court as investigations continue.

Police say efforts are ongoing to fully dismantle the syndicate and prevent further criminal activity in the region.

Court dismisses Randy Abbey’s GH¢20m defamation suit against Abronye https://www.adomonline.com/court-dismisses-randy-abbeys-gh%c2%a220m-defamation-suit-against-abronye/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 16:37:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622640 The High Court in Accra has dismissed a defamation suit filed by the Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Dr. Ransford Anertey Abbey, against Bono Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye, ruling that the case was improperly instituted.

Justice Halimah El-Alawa Abdul Baasit delivered the judgment on Monday, January 19, 2026, at the High Court, General Jurisdiction 2, in Accra.

Dr. Abbey filed the suit on August 26, 2025, claiming that Abronye had made broadcasts and publications that were defamatory and damaging to his reputation. The suit sought personal redress for the alleged harm.

However, the court found that the case was procedurally flawed because it was filed through COCOBOD’s Legal Department instead of a private legal practitioner, despite being brought in Dr. Abbey’s personal capacity. COCOBOD itself was not a party to the suit.

Counsel for Abronye had argued that a state institution’s legal department cannot represent an individual in a private matter, and Justice Abdul Baasit agreed. She explained that defamation is a personal tort intended to protect an individual’s reputation, not that of an institution.

“The plaintiff, having sued in his personal capacity, ought to procure the services of a private legal practitioner to represent him,” the judge ruled. “Public institutional legal resources cannot be used for purely personal litigation, and the involvement of COCOBOD’s Legal Department rendered the writ and statement of claim incompetent before the court.”

As a result, the High Court dismissed the suit in its entirety and ordered that no costs be awarded against either party.

Legal observers, including lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, say the decision reinforces established principles on the use of state resources, especially where public officials pursue personal claims.

The ruling highlights the distinction between cases brought on behalf of a public institution and those filed in a personal capacity, even when the issues arise from an official role.

As at the time of filing this report, Dr Abbey had not indicated whether he would refile the case using private counsel. The ruling was delivered in open court and certified by the High Court registry.

NPP Presidential aspirants sign Peace Pact ahead of January 31 primary https://www.adomonline.com/npp-presidential-aspirants-sign-peace-pact-ahead-of-january-31-primary/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 15:13:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622590 The five presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have signed a peace pact ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The ceremony, held on Thursday, January 22, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, was aimed at ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process within the party.

All five aspirants appended their signatures to the pact, signalling their commitment to maintaining peace before, during, and after the election.

Speaking at the event, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged unity among party members and aspirants. He reminded them that the NPP is bigger than any individual or faction and called on all contestants to prioritise the collective interest of the party over personal ambitions.

Chairman of the NPP Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, encouraged the aspirants to accept the outcome of the January 31 election and to support the eventual winner to maintain party cohesion.

General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong also appealed to the aspirants to work together after the election, emphasising that unity within the party would be critical to securing victory in the 2028 general elections.

Several senior party leaders and state officials attended the ceremony, including former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, former Chief Justice Akosua Frema Osei Opare, and NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong.

NPP is bigger than any candidate; unity must come first – Akufo-Addo https://www.adomonline.com/npp-is-bigger-than-any-candidate-unity-must-come-first-akufo-addo/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 14:42:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622581 Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has cautioned aspirants contesting the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership not to let personal ambition undermine party unity and long-term prospects, stressing that the NPP is greater than any individual interest.

He made the remarks at the peace pact signing ceremony for NPP presidential hopefuls ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026 primaries, describing the agreement as more than a symbolic exercise.

“This peace pact, this commitment pact, is therefore not a mere ceremony,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.

According to him, the pact represents a solemn responsibility among contestants.

“It is a commitment that ambition will not override fraternity, that competition will not descend into hostility, and that once the ballot has spoken, the party will move forward as one,” he explained.

The former President reminded aspirants that their conduct before and after the internal elections will have lasting implications for the party and the country.

“Your conduct will shape the moral tone of the NPP and the future of our country,” he said, noting that party supporters, grassroots members, and the youth are closely observing their actions.

He warned that internal competition must not weaken the party’s collective strength.

“Let me be clear. The NPP is bigger than any individual,” he stated.

He added that no personal agenda should take precedence over the party’s survival.

“No ambition, grievance, or faction is greater than the elephant,” he said, referring to the party’s symbol, and urged aspirants not to allow leadership contests to divide the party.

Highlighting the importance of cohesion, Nana Akufo-Addo said unity is central to winning national elections.

“Unity is not optional. Unity is not a slogan. Unity is a strategic necessity for victory,” he stressed, urging candidates to respect the peace pact not only in signature but also in conduct.

He also called for civility in the final days of campaigning.

“Let your campaigns be firm but fair, competitive but respectful,” he urged, noting that the NPP’s tradition rejects “fear, insults, intimidation, and bitterness.”

The former President warned against placing allegiance to individuals above loyalty to the party.

“Loyalty to individuals must never supersede loyalty to the party,” he said, adding that after the primaries, “there must be one party, one direction, one destiny.”

Expressing optimism about the party’s prospects, Nana Akufo-Addo said the NPP remains “the best vehicle with the best ideas for Ghana’s future” and urged members to keep the party “united, disciplined, and worthy of the trust of the Ghanaian people.”

“If we honour our history, respect one another, and put party and country above self, the future of the NPP and of Ghana herself will indeed be bright,” he concluded.

The incident occurred near the Awutu Bereku Police Station, a short distance from the health facility. According to information gathered, the man, believed to be in his late 50s, left his hospital bed to purchase drinking water.

After buying the sachet water, he allegedly collapsed and attempted to return to the health centre to continue his treatment.

The health centre is said to be about 15 metres from where the man collapsed, and some residents insist that a prompt response from the staff could have made a difference.

Angry community members have since blamed both the health workers and the police for what they describe as a failure to act swiftly to assist the patient.

Police later conveyed the body to the mortuary as they await the family’s identification to allow investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

NDC suspends Oda Constituency Communication Officer over misconduct https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-suspends-oda-constituency-communication-officer-over-misconduct/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 08:35:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622364 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has suspended Agbesi Benjamin from his position as Oda Constituency Communication Officer following allegations of misconduct.

The decision comes after an audio recording surfaced in which Mr Benjamin is said to have discouraged a newly converted member from joining the party.

In the recording, he reportedly made comments that contradict the party’s outreach efforts, even as the REC maintains that the NDC has become “the most attractive political party in Africa in recent times.”

At a virtual meeting held on January 21, 2026, the REC resolved to suspend Mr Benjamin with immediate effect and refer the matter to the Regional Disciplinary Committee for detailed investigations and determination.

He has also been instructed to surrender all party property in his possession to the Constituency Secretary.

According to the committee, Mr Benjamin will be invited to appear before the disciplinary body for a hearing to enable it to compile its findings and recommendations for submission to the REC.

The suspension letter was signed by the Eastern Regional Secretary, Jamal Konneh, and copied to the party’s General Secretary, the REC, the Constituency Chairman, and the Chairman of the Regional Disciplinary Committee.

Police to be armed during NPP presidential primaries – William Yamoah [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/police-to-be-armed-during-npp-presidential-primaries-william-yamoah-video/ Thu, 22 Jan 2026 07:34:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622318 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the Ghana Police Service will be armed to provide security during the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, following intelligence reports of possible threats linked to the process.

According to the Secretary of the NPP Election Committee, William Yamoah, the decision to allow police officers to carry weapons was taken after the party intercepted videos and commentaries suggesting potential violence surrounding the polls.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Mr Yamoah explained that the move was made at the request of the party to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

“The police are going to use weapons during the January 31 primaries upon our request. The NPP Election Committee asked them to hold the weapons because we have intercepted videos and commentaries of threats,” he said.

He noted that although it is unclear whether the threats are genuine, the party cannot afford to take chances with the safety of delegates and officials.

“We don’t know whether these are empty threats or not, and we cannot put people’s lives at risk,” Mr Yamoah stressed.

He further clarified that the concerns go beyond internal party disagreements, pointing to possible external interference.

“These are not internal but external threats, and we cannot leave anything to chance. We need to prepare,” he added.

Mr Yamoah said the decision forms part of broader security measures being put in place to ensure the primaries are conducted peacefully and without intimidation. He urged party supporters and delegates to cooperate fully with security personnel on the day of voting.

The NPP is expected to elect its presidential candidate for the upcoming general elections at the January 31 primaries, an exercise that will draw delegates from across the country.

Mr Joseph Osei-Owusu, Chairperson of the NPP Presidential Elections Committee, told the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday that preparations, including the final register, security arrangements, voting centres and election rules, had been completed, with the conduct of the polls entrusted to the Electoral Commission (EC).

“Everything that has to be done is done. The Commission is ready, the police are ready, and everything they need to be able to do their work has been provided,” he said.

Mr Osei-Owusu said the party worked closely with the EC to identify voting centres, noting that each constituency would have one centre, except where delegate numbers exceeded 1,000, in which case voting points would be split within the same locality.

He said the arrangement resulted in 333 polling centres, including one at the party’s headquarters in Accra.

Mr Osei-Owusu said two proposed voting centres were relocated after joint assessments with the EC and constituency executives, adding that the decision received unanimous approval from all five presidential aspirants.

“At every stage, we involved the contestants themselves. We showed them the list, we listened to concerns, and we resolved them together,” he said.

On the delegate register, Mr Osei-Owusu said issues arising from validation, petitions and corrections were resolved transparently, with agents of all aspirants involved throughout the process.

Out of an initial 213,617 names, 2,827 deceased members and 653 persons who had forfeited their membership were identified, leaving 211,849 eligible voters.

“If you go to our IT centre now, you will find representatives of the contestants verifying everything and endorsing it before final printing,” he said.

Mr Osei-Owusu said the NPP had handed over the entire voting, counting, collation and declaration process to the EC, with results to be declared first at polling centres, collated at regional centres and finally declared at the party’s headquarters in Accra.

The party headquarters would then formally announce the results and introduce the winner to the public.

On security, Mr Osei-Owusu said the Ghana Police Service would deploy between 70 and 150 officers per polling centre, with military support in selected areas, particularly in parts of the Upper East Region.

“Anybody thinking of bringing private security or ‘macho’ men should think twice. The police will deal with it very, very severely,” he warned.

Mr Osei-Owusu said proxy voting had been abolished for the primaries to safeguard the integrity and acceptability of the process.

“We felt that this is not an election in which we should allow anybody the basis to claim that the process was tainted,” he said.

The five aspirants contesting the January 31, 2026 NPP presidential primaries are Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Mr Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum.

Mr Osei-Owusu expressed confidence in the process.

“Everybody will be satisfied that he won because he was voted for, or he lost because he was voted against,” he said.

Ofori-Atta isn’t scared of criminal prosecution, he will come at the right time – Legal team https://www.adomonline.com/ofori-atta-isnt-scared-of-criminal-prosecution-he-will-come-at-the-right-time-legal-team/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 18:35:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622243 A member of the legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, says his client is not afraid of criminal prosecution and will return to Ghana to face the law when the time is appropriate.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, January 21, Frank Davies dismissed claims that Mr Ofori-Atta was evading accountability, insisting that no one was shielding the former minister from the law.

“Ken Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta is not scared of criminal prosecution. So those who are saying he should come and account, they should rest their voices,” he said.

“When it is appropriate for Ken to come, he will come. Whether by extradition or otherwise, he will come. And when he comes, he will face the full rigor of the law.”

Mr Davies stressed that the former Finance Minister, like any Ghanaian, is entitled to legal representation and due process, describing public calls suggesting otherwise as misplaced.

“Nobody is shielding Ken. Nobody will have that conviction that anyone is shielding Ken. But Ken is supposed to have legal representation, and that is what we have as Ghanaians.

“Nobody can take that legal right from him,” he added, urging critics to “listen to the state and watch the state.”

His comments come amid mounting public pressure from pressure group Arise Ghana, which has been picketing the United States Embassy in Accra to demand the return of the former finance minister to face what the group describes as “justice.”

Mr Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024 under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration and has been at the centre of several public controversies relating to alleged financial mismanagement and procurement concerns.

In recent years, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) announced investigations into a number of transactions approved during his tenure, including revenue assurance contracts, aspects of the public debt restructuring programme, and payments made under sole-sourcing arrangements.

His lawyers have previously maintained that he remains willing to cooperate with any lawful investigative process, explaining that his temporary stay outside the country is due to health and security considerations.

Meanwhile, Arise Ghana’s lead convener, Bernard Mornah, says the group is prepared to sustain its protest if Mr Ofori-Atta does not return to Ghana.

Speaking to JoyNews at the protest grounds on Tuesday, Mr Mornah said the group had initially notified the Ghana Police Service of its intention to embark on an indefinite picketing exercise.

“Our initial notification to the Ghana Police was for an indefinite protestation and picketing. They requested that we put it into a lot. And so we agreed that the first two weeks would be just to come sit around the United States Embassy,” he said.

He explained that the group would review its strategy after the two-week period, depending on developments surrounding the former minister’s return.

“If the US decides that tomorrow Ken is coming to Ghana, we will terminate our picketing. If Ken is not coming, after two weeks, we will review our operations,” Mr Mornah added.

I am very hopeful about Ken Ofori-Atta’s return— Ayine https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-very-hopeful-about-ken-ofori-attas-return-ayine/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 18:19:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622205 Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has expressed optimism that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will return to Ghana, even as the United States continues to review the legal processes surrounding his case.

Speaking to JoyNews on Wednesday, January 21, Mr Ayine said he had monitored the recent immigration hearing but could not disclose confidential discussions with US authorities.

He clarified the distinction between the ongoing US immigration proceedings and any extradition request.

“The justice department is working on the extradition request. You have to understand that what is happening now is in relation to immigration law violations. That is separate and distinct from the extradition request,” he explained. “I am very hopeful. Extremely hopeful.”

His remarks come after Ofori-Atta appeared before Judge David A. Gardey at the United States Immigration Court on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, following his detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The hearing, conducted in private at the request of Ofori-Atta’s legal team, focused on his bail application.

State attorneys opposed the bail request, citing an alleged extradition request by the Ghanaian government. Judge Gardey, however, declined to make an immediate ruling, noting that no documentary proof of the extradition had been presented.

He directed the federal government to submit evidence on or before February 19, 2026, before any determination on Ofori-Atta’s release could be made.

“The court cannot act on assertions without proof,” Judge Gardey reportedly said.

Ofori-Atta, who served as Ghana’s finance minister from 2017 to 2023, was detained by ICE on January 6, 2026, amid questions over his lawful status in the US.

His legal team in Ghana and the US have indicated that the former minister is cooperating fully with authorities while efforts continue to resolve the matter.

One arrested over robbery that claimed miner’s life at Obuasi; 2 on the run https://www.adomonline.com/one-arrested-over-robbery-that-claimed-miners-life-at-obuasi-2-on-the-run/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 16:10:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622194 The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with a robbery that claimed the life of a 42-year-old miner at Asonkore SSNIT Flats Down in Obuasi.

According to the police, the attackers escaped with GH¢2,600, a laptop, and a car key belonging to the victim.

The suspect, identified as Rahman Adams, also known as Wale, is currently in custody, while two other accomplices, including a Nigerian national, remain at large.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the police said Adams was apprehended on January 18, 2026, at Pomposo following an intelligence-led operation, more than a month after the robbery, which occurred on December 12, 2025.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects gained access to the victim’s home by cutting through a burglar-proof window before attacking him. Responding officers later found the miner’s body inside the room.

“Police responded and found the body of a 42-year-old miner inside the house,” the statement said, noting that the victim appeared to have been assaulted during the robbery and died at the scene.

The police identified the two remaining suspects as A.T. and a Nigerian national, both of whom are believed to have participated in the robbery and murder.

Investigators also retrieved hammers, machetes, and cutters from the scene, suspected to have been used to break into the house and carry out the attack.

The victim’s body has been deposited at the Obuasi Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Rahman Adams remains in custody assisting with investigations, while police continue efforts to track down the remaining suspects. Authorities have appealed to the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the fugitives.

Former MASLOC CEO faces U.S. court today as Ghana seeks extradition https://www.adomonline.com/former-masloc-ceo-faces-u-s-court-today-as-ghana-seeks-extradition/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 14:34:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622135 Convicted former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, is expected to appear before a United States court today, January 21, 2026.

She was arrested by U.S. Marshals on January 6 and has been held at the Nevada Southern Detention Centre since then. The arrest follows an extradition request submitted by Ghana to U.S. authorities in July 2024.

Attionu is currently being held pending legal proceedings in the United States, where a court will determine the next steps in the extradition process.

She was convicted in Ghana over financial mismanagement at MASLOC, prompting authorities to secure her return to face the full consequences of the law.

Attionu was tried in absentia after absconding following a court-approved medical check-up abroad. Daniel Axim testified in person but did not present any witnesses.

The convictions relate to the misappropriation of funds allocated for MASLOC activities between 2013 and 2016.

In one instance, the convicts withdrew GH₵500,000 as a loan from Obaatampa Savings and Loans Company, demanding a refund when the institution refused to provide a 24% interest rate. Although evidence of the refund was presented, it was not reflected in MASLOC’s account.

Bishop J.Y. Adu makes interesting revelation after Yaw Sarpong’s death https://www.adomonline.com/bishop-j-y-adu-makes-interesting-revelation-after-yaw-sarpongs-death/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 11:25:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2622065 Bishop J.Y. Adu, founder of the New Jerusalem Church, has provided details surrounding the death of veteran gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, revealing that family members removed him from the facility where he was receiving specialized care.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Kasiebo is Tasty, Bishop Adu extended condolences to the bereaved family and recounted Sarpong’s long battle with illness.

“He wasn’t completely healed. In 2011, he was struck by a sickness that left him paralyzed, but through the grace of God, he recovered. In 2020, he fell sick again and had been fighting it ever since,” he said.

Bishop Adu explained that disagreements arose between himself and Sarpong’s children when they insisted on taking their father from the church’s care facility a day after the death of legendary backing vocalist Maame Adwoa Tiwaa.

“I wasn’t happy because the specialist and I were closely monitoring his condition and administering medication. But we could not stop them because he is their relative,” he added.

According to Bishop Adu, after Sarpong was taken home, he required regular oxygen treatments and struggled to eat during the last days of his life.

He said he visited Sarpong at home a week after the move and advised that he return to the facility, which has nurses, lab technicians, herbal medicine options, and daily monitoring of blood pressure and other vital signs.

“Without this level of care, patients cannot survive long, especially when blood pressure or sugar levels fluctuate, and I told the family and his caregivers, but they didn’t heed my advice,” he said.

The bishop, while withholding specifics about Sarpong’s illness, emphasized that prayers were combined with medical care to sustain him and concluded, “God knows best.”

US judge demands proof of extradition as Ofori-Atta stays in ICE detention https://www.adomonline.com/us-judge-demands-proof-of-extradition-as-ofori-atta-stays-in-ice-detention/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 07:30:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621939 Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been remanded into the custody of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a closed-door immigration hearing on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, pending further proceedings on his bail application.

The hearing, which was conducted in private at the request of his legal team, focused on a bail application. However, state attorneys opposed the request, arguing that Mr Ofori-Atta should not be granted bail because Ghana has submitted an extradition request for him.

In his ruling, Judge David A. Gardey declined to make an immediate determination on the extradition claim, noting that no documentary evidence had been presented to support the assertion.

“The court cannot act on assertions without proof,” the judge indicated, directing the federal government to file any evidence of an extradition request on or before February 19, 2026.

The case has been adjourned to Thursday, April 27, at 1pm, when the tribunal is expected to hear both the bail application and any documents the government may submit. Until then, Mr Ofori-Atta will remain in ICE detention.

His detention was first announced on January 7 by his Ghanaian legal representatives, Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners (MPOBB), who said he had been taken into custody a day earlier over concerns about his immigration status.

“The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as of January 6, 2026, detained the former Minister for Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, regarding the status of his current stay in the United States,” the firm said in a public notice signed by Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo, Esq.

According to the lawyers, Mr Ofori-Atta has a pending petition for adjustment of status, a legal process that allows individuals to remain in the US beyond the validity of their visa.

“Under US law, a change of status by this method is common,” the statement added, stressing that the former minister is “a law-abiding person” and is fully cooperating with ICE.

Official records from the US Department of Homeland Security indicate that Mr Ofori-Atta is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Facility in Bowling Green, Virginia.

The development has attracted attention in Ghana, especially given Mr Ofori-Atta’s recent legal and medical history.

He has been in the United States since January 2025, where he sought treatment for prostate cancer. He reportedly underwent a radical prostatectomy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on June 13, 2025, following tests that showed progression of the disease.

Sources close to the family say he had been under medical observation for weeks before the surgery. He is also said to be managing post-COVID multi-system inflammatory response syndrome, a condition he was diagnosed with in February 2021.

Mr Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2023, steering the country’s economy through the COVID-19 pandemic, debt restructuring, and negotiations with the International Monetary Fund.

In November 2025, the Office of the Special Prosecutor charged him and several others with corruption and corruption-related offences. That case is currently at the case management conference stage.

US Immigration Court bars public from Ofori-Atta’s hearing https://www.adomonline.com/us-immigration-court-bars-public-from-ofori-attas-hearing/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 07:07:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621918 Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta appeared before a U.S. immigration court in Virginia on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as authorities continue proceedings regarding his stay in the country.

The court appearance follows his detention on January 8 by officers of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). U.S. authorities argue that Mr. Ofori-Atta no longer holds valid permission to remain in the country after the cancellation of his visitor visa.

The case was heard at the Annandale Immigration Court, where Immigration Judge David Gardey presided over a bond reconsideration and an initial review of the matter.

Court records indicate that the former minister is being held at the Caroline Detention Center while proceedings continue.

Mr. Ofori-Atta was represented by attorneys including Christopher Chaisson of Whiteford Taylor & Preston, alongside his long-time immigration counsel, Kwao Amagashi.

During the hearing, his lawyers requested that both the bond session and the master calendar hearing be closed to the public, citing the sensitive nature of the issues expected to arise.

Judge Gardey approved the request, ordering that the proceedings be held privately and instructing non-parties who had joined via Webex to leave before deliberations resumed.

The outcome of the case will determine whether Mr. Ofori-Atta is allowed to remain in the United States or faces removal, a development that could also have implications for related legal matters in Ghana.

Galamsey: Lands Ministry vows relentless war after shooting of NAIMOS officer https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-lands-ministry-vows-relentless-war-after-shooting-of-naimos-officer/ Wed, 21 Jan 2026 06:59:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621893 The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has affirmed its commitment to the fight against illegal mining, following a violent encounter involving officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in the Bono Region.

During the operation, a NAIMOS officer sustained a gunshot wound, while an armed suspect was killed in the exchange.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Ministry said the officer was shot in the thigh during a routine anti-galamsey patrol along the Subinkurom–Kyeremasu road in the Dormaa Central Municipality.

According to the statement, the task force came under fire from armed individuals hiding in the bushes, prompting the officers to return fire.

The injured officer was rushed to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital in Ampenkuro, where he is receiving treatment. One of the attackers, identified as Abuu Ibrahim, was struck by gunfire and later pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

Acknowledging the risks faced by officers, the Ministry stressed that such violence will not derail the campaign against illegal mining.

“Despite the persistent attacks and disruptions, [NAIMOS] remains committed to fighting the scourge of illegal mining,” the statement said.

The incident has heightened concerns about the growing use of weapons by illegal miners, as enforcement teams increasingly face armed resistance during operations.

NAIMOS has appealed to traditional authorities, local communities, and stakeholders to continue supporting the anti-galamsey campaign, noting that illegal mining continues to destroy water bodies, forests, and farmlands across the country.

The ministry insists its determination to protect Ghana’s natural resources remains unshaken, even as officers face life-threatening risks on the frontline.

Family breaks silence on former NPP Parliamentary Candidate’s stabbing of wife in US https://www.adomonline.com/family-breaks-silence-on-former-npp-parliamentary-candidates-stabbing-of-wife-in-us/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 20:01:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621763 The family of Gilda Nortey, wife of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Korle Klottey, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, is demanding justice after she was allegedly attacked in the United States.

Gilda reportedly sustained multiple stab wounds during a domestic confrontation, which sources say was triggered by divorce threats.

David Gyapanin, an uncle of the victim, told Accra-based Citi News that the incident has left the family shaken but determined to see the law take its course.

“They had a little argument, and my niece said she may file for divorce if things continue that way. My niece said Valentino threatened to either kill himself or kill her. He stabbed her three times. She pleaded with him to take her to the hospital. He agreed on condition that she would not mention his name,” he recounted.

Mr. Gyapanin added that Gilda managed to escape and seek help.

“Fortunately, she had the car key and drove herself to the hospital where she works. She’s getting better. As a family, we want nothing less than justice,” he said.

He stressed that the family expects U.S. authorities to fully enforce the law.

“It happened in the States, and we want to believe that the laws there will be applied fully. You can’t marry someone’s daughter and, just because she wants to end the marriage, decide to end her life. If justice isn’t served in the U.S., we will pursue it in Ghana,” he added.

Police in Lower Paxton Township confirmed the incident occurred around 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, along Mayfair Drive in Pennsylvania. The victim was transported to hospital by first responders and is currently in stable condition. Authorities noted that there was no danger to the public.

Valentino Nortey, 41, of Harrisburg, has been charged with attempted homicide, possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use, and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.

Court records show he was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Judy, who denied him bail. He is being held at Dauphin County Prison and is expected to face a preliminary hearing on January 26, 2026, as investigations continue.

Owusu Bempah hits back at Anthony Karbo over election prophecies https://www.adomonline.com/owusu-bempah-hits-back-at-anthony-karbo-over-election-prophecies/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 16:28:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621678 Founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries, Apostle Dr. Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, has criticised former Lawra MP and Senior Advisor to the Bawumia Campaign, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, over his comments on the role of prophecies in elections.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen show, Owusu Bempah said he was unhappy with Karbo’s assertion that election outcomes are determined by polls rather than prophecies, and his claim that politicians supply poll data to prophets.

He described the remarks as a general attack on the prophetic ministry.

The cleric expressed surprise at Karbo’s comments, recalling that the former MP had previously visited his home with Sammy Awuku, during which he prophesied Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s victory in the 2016 presidential election.

“I wasn’t happy with the way Anthony Karbo spoke. If he claims he doesn’t believe in prophets, I am surprised because he has visited my house before with Sammi Awuku, and I prophesied that Akufo Addo would be president in 2016. They were very happy about this prophecy. Did he tell me to say what I said?

“Although he didn’t mention names, I am also a prophet. I have made several prophecies about politics that have all come to pass. He should name the prophets who get information from politicians for their prophecies. He spoke generally to all prophets, so he should mention a specific name if he is referring to me,” he stated.

Owusu Bempah insisted that the prophetic ministry is genuine and relevant, noting that several of his political prophecies have come to pass.

He challenged Karbo to mention the names of prophets he claims receive information from politicians.

He further stated that he would no longer pray for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and some members of the New Patriotic Party, citing what he described as repeated disrespect toward prophets.

He added that although he knows the outcome of future elections, he would only reveal the winner of the 2028 general elections when directed by God.

“The prophetic ministry is real and true. I will no longer pray for Bawumia and his people because they have disrespected us a lot. I know who will win the upcoming election, but I won’t disclose it yet. I am waiting for the national election in 2028 to reveal who will win. God has shown it to me. There are individuals in the NPP that I will not pray for, but if God leads me to do so, I have no choice. What Karbo said felt like a condemnation of the prophetic ministry,” he said.

NPP gave polls data to prophets – Anthony Karbo on election prophecies https://www.adomonline.com/npp-gave-polls-data-to-prophets-anthony-karbo-on-election-prophecies/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 16:06:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621682 Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, Senior Advisor to the Bawumia campaign, has claimed that many election-related prophecies by Ghanaian pastors are not spiritual revelations but are based on political data and strategy.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the former Lawra MP said political actors sometimes provide poll figures to religious leaders to shape public perception ahead of elections, noting that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) engaged in this practice while in opposition.

He added that polling data is often more reliable than prophetic declarations during election seasons.

“Today, I have been seeing prophets prophesying about things, but when we were in opposition, we were giving them the polls data to prophesy,” Karbo said.

He explained that while he would not disclose the names of those involved, some pastors were being fed political statistics to craft election messages. “We gave them the polls data and told them that the economic management team has provided statistics showing who is winning or losing, and they arranged it in a prophecy,” he added.

Karbo also questioned the consistency of some prophetic claims, suggesting that genuine insight should not be geographically limited. “If any pastor claims that he sees things, he should open branches in the five northern regions. Why is he always in Accra?” he asked.

His remarks come amid growing public debate about the role of religion in politics ahead of the NPP’s presidential primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

While details surrounding his death remain limited, news of his passing emerged on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

According to information obtained by Adomonline.com, Yaw Sarpong passed away at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he was receiving treatment.

His death comes barely a month after Adwoa Tiwaa, his celebrated backing vocalist and member of the Asomafo music group passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

Before her death, Maame Tiwa actively cared for Yaw Sarpong during his health struggles.

With a passion for singing, Mr Sarpong in the early stages of life joined the Methodist singing group at Asuofua (in the Ashanti Region) where he was discovered by one Medical Doctor who also wanted to form a music group in 1971.

The group used to perform in churches and other event centres.

It was during such performances at Asuase in Kumasi, a pastor approached Mr Sarpong and offered to take care of him. Mr Sarpong took the chance and lived with him.

With a music career spanning over 40 years, it emerged in March 2024 that, the legendary musician was not in good health, prompting concern from his fans.

Scores of Ghanaians including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Samira Bawumia extended support to him.

Yaw Sarpong years before his death revealed that his music career has not really paid off as people may think, indicating that out of his 27 albums no producer has paid him for anything.

He contributed to numerous gospel classics that continue to inspire believers across the country.

His songs are celebrated for their heartfelt worship, praise, and messages of faith, making him one of Ghana’s most enduring gospel icons.

Some of his most notable works include “Onyame Nhyira”, “Otuo Safoa”, “Onyame Nna” “Ayeyi Obiara Nti “Ahobrase3”, a collaboration with Sarkodie, “Meda Wo Ase” “Onyame W) Me Mma”, wohaw ne sen among others.

Arise Ghana picket at American Embassy over Ofori-Atta’s extradition https://www.adomonline.com/arise-ghana-picket-at-american-embassy-over-ofori-attas-extradition/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 08:21:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621361 A demonstration organised by pressure group Arise Ghana is currently underway at the United States Embassy in Accra, with protesters calling for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to face ongoing legal proceedings in Ghana.

The group says the picketing is part of a broader civic campaign aimed at holding public officials accountable and maintaining pressure on authorities to act in the public interest.

Members, dressed in red and black and carrying placards, are urging the US government to cooperate with Ghanaian authorities to ensure the return of the former minister, whom they accuse of evading accountability by remaining abroad.

Arise Ghana emphasized that the protest is not politically motivated but seeks to reinforce citizen oversight of governance and the rule of law.

Police have been deployed around the embassy to maintain order, while traffic in parts of the Cantonments area has slowed due to the picketing.

The protest comes amid ongoing developments regarding Mr Ofori-Atta’s legal situation in the United States.

The former Finance Minister is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Facility following issues linked to his immigration status. He is scheduled to appear before a US court, where proceedings will focus on his custodial status and the processes relating to his potential transfer or release, pending further legal actions.

The court is expected to determine the next steps as authorities consider both his immigration situation and requests tied to Ghana’s interest in having him return to face investigations at home.

Ofori-Atta to face U.S. court today over immigration status https://www.adomonline.com/ofori-atta-to-face-u-s-court-today-over-immigration-status/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 07:05:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621317 Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is scheduled to appear before a United States court on Tuesday, January 20, following actions taken by U.S. immigration authorities over his legal status in the country.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has reportedly determined that Mr Ofori-Atta no longer has lawful status to remain in the United States.

This development could open the way for extradition proceedings to Ghana after the court hearing.

However, Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, has dismissed suggestions that the matter is a routine case of visa overstay.

He maintains that Mr Ofori-Atta’s visitor visa was actively revoked by U.S. authorities rather than expiring naturally.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, January 10, Dr Ayine explained that although Mr Ofori-Atta had initially been permitted to remain in the United States until November 29, he failed to depart within the stipulated period.

According to him, the revocation of the visa was intentional and tied to ongoing investigations, not standard immigration enforcement.

“This is not simply an immigration issue. His visa did not expire; it was revoked. I state this on authority,” Dr Ayine said, adding that the visa was due to run until February before it was withdrawn.

The Attorney-General further disclosed that Ghana’s request for Mr Ofori-Atta’s extradition is linked to investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor concerning the SML case, noting that Ghanaian and U.S. authorities have been working closely on the matter.

In a related development, former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, is also expected to appear before a U.S. court on January 21, for proceedings connected to a possible extradition to Ghana.

NAIMOS shuts down galamsey sites at Duayaw Nkwanta https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-shuts-down-galamsey-sites-at-duayaw-nkwanta/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 06:54:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621300 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has carried out a major intelligence-led operation to dismantle illegal mining activities polluting the River Bisi in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region.

The operation, conducted on Monday, January 19, 2026, between the early morning hours and midday, targeted mining sites linked to severe environmental degradation along the River Bisi, a key tributary of the Tano River.

The pollution has reportedly disrupted farming and other livelihoods in nearby communities, including Egya Wuradu Kuro, Egya Antwi and Nana Etufuwaa Kuro.

During the exercise, the task force overran the illegal mining enclave, destroying makeshift shelters and logistical bases used by the operators.

Several items believed to have been used in the illicit activities were dismantled and destroyed, including heavy-duty water pumping machines, gold-washing platforms, generators and other mining accessories.

Additional equipment and materials were also destroyed at the site, among them welding and pumping machines, fuel-powered engines, radios, water hoses, diesel fuel drums and excavator batteries, as part of efforts to completely disable the operation and prevent a return.

After closing down the sites, NAIMOS officers engaged residents of the affected communities, most of whom are farmers, to gather intelligence and reassure them of continued state intervention.

The discussions also focused on rebuilding trust and underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting farmlands, water bodies and public infrastructure.

The Director of Operations at NAIMOS said similar enforcement actions would be sustained across the Ahafo and Bono regions, stressing that restoring the Tano River and its tributaries is critical to safeguarding agriculture, livelihoods and environmental sustainability.

A citizen of Ghana, Edison Osbert Lartey, through the right to information provisions, asked Parliament on November 4, 2025, whether the legislative body “received from Honourable Bryan Acheampong details of his rank of enlistment and discharge from the United States Air Force (or any other branch of the United States Armed Forces)” and whether “Parliament received from Honourable Bryan Acheampong a copy of the Certificate of Honourable Discharge or any other documentation confirming his service in the United States Air Force (or a related institution).”

In its response dated December 11, 2025, Parliament said no such official documentations were submitted, and it had no records of Dr Acheampong’s enlistment and rank, as well as his certificate of discharge.

“With respect to this request, kindly be informed that there is no record indicating that details of Honourable Bryan Acheampong’s rank of enlistment or discharge from the United States Air Force, or any other branch of the United States Armed Forces, were submitted to the leadership of Parliament or to the Appointments Committee following its meeting on Monday, 20th February 2023, to vet the Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture,” the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Dzietror, detailed in the response.

“Similarly, there is no record to show that Honourable Bryan Acheampong submitted any document to the Committee confirming his service in the United States Air Force (or any related institution).”

“Consequently, Parliament is unable to provide certified copies or further particulars relating to the rank of enlistment and discharge, as no such documentation was presented to Parliament,” Parliament further stated, adding that its response is issued in compliance with the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989).

Dr Acheampong is one of five candidates aspiring to win the flagbearer contest of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to lead the opposition party in the 2028 elections.

Ofori-Atta is happy – Lawyer says ahead of January 20 immigration hearing https://www.adomonline.com/ofori-atta-is-happy-lawyer-says-ahead-of-january-20-immigration-hearing/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 18:35:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621163 Frank Davies, a member of the legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, says his client is in good spirits ahead of his hearing scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, in the United States.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews Today on Monday, January 19, Mr Davies disclosed that the hearing will be conducted virtually.

“Ken Ofori-Atta is happy. Our counterpart lawyers in America are happy. We are all waiting for the hearing tomorrow, which will be virtual,” he said.

He confirmed that Mr Ofori-Atta is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Centre, adding that immigration officials will determine the exact location from which he will join the virtual proceedings.

Mr Davies then clarified that the hearing has nothing to do with any extradition process, stressing that it is purely an immigration matter.

“What is happening tomorrow is a purely immigration matter. It has nothing to do with any extradition process, whether they call it revocation of visa or whatever,” he said.

“Tomorrow is an immigration hearing for an adjustment of his immigration status in America, simply nothing more, nothing less. After tomorrow, we will all know the position.”

I didn’t kill my friend, but I’ll pass through this – Suspect in Immigration officer’s murder case [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/i-didnt-kill-my-friend-but-ill-pass-through-this-suspect-in-immigration-officers-murder-case-video/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 16:25:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621114 The main suspect in the killing of Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah has denied any involvement in the crime, insisting he is innocent and prepared to see the full legal process through to clear his name.

Bright Aweh, who has been in police custody since July 2025, rejected claims that he murdered the 38-year-old officer, maintaining that Amoah was his friend and that he had no hand in his death.

Describing the trial as mentally exhausting, Aweh expressed hope that the truth will eventually emerge.

“I did not kill my friend; I am not a murderer. I am going through this painfully for justice to be served. I will go through it for justice to be served,” he said.

Aweh was the first person arrested after Amoah was reported missing on July 3, 2025. The officer had reportedly left home to meet a friend at Ashongman Estate over what investigators said was a financial matter.

Five days later, a partially burnt body believed to be Amoah’s was discovered in a gutter at Abuom Junction near Kwabenya, close to the GBC Satellite area and opposite Comet Estate in Accra. Despite the severe burns, relatives later identified the body at the Police Hospital mortuary.

The Accra Regional Police Command arrested Aweh on July 10, 2025, after investigations indicated he was the last person known to have been in contact with Amoah before he disappeared.

Since then, Aweh has been appearing in court as the trial progresses. However, several adjournments have slowed proceedings, frustrating the victim’s family.

Relatives of Stephen King Amoah say the repeated delays have deepened their pain and prolonged their wait for closure. In a statement on December 3, 2025, the family said they remain determined to see justice served despite the slow pace of the case.

Amoah was laid to rest on Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the SDA Church, Old-Tafo (4 Miles) in the Ashanti Region.

NPP sold over 300 Metro Mass buses amongst cronies in 2020 – Deputy MD https://www.adomonline.com/npp-sold-over-300-metro-mass-buses-amongst-cronies-in-2020-deputy-md/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 15:31:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621091 Deputy Managing Director of Metro Mass Transit Ltd, Haroun Apaw Wiredu, has revealed that 313 buses were declared unserviceable and sold barely two months before the 2020 general elections, raising serious concerns about the disposal of state assets.

He disclosed that some of the buses were sold for extremely low amounts, with one reportedly going for just GH¢2,500.

Speaking on Accra-based TV3, Mr. Wiredu said the management of the company at the time operated what he described as a criminal scheme known as “cannibalisation,” in which buses with minor faults were deliberately written off and sold cheaply to cronies.

According to him, internal reports indicate that more than 400 buses were intentionally tagged as unserviceable and sold to individuals linked to the system.

“By 2017, when the previous government took the reins of power, it will surprise you to know that around 2017 and 2018, they declared over 400 buses unserviceable. Those buses were scrapped and sold to certain individuals associated with the system,” he said.

“Then, two months before the 2020 election in October, another 313 buses were sold among some cronies. When I reviewed the report, I realized that a whole Metro Mass bus was sold for a paltry GH¢2,500,” Mr. Wiredu added.

He explained further how the alleged scheme operated.

“What we realized was that the then management was involved in a business we called cannibalisation. Cannibalisation is a deliberate act—they saw scrapping buses as a low-hanging fruit, a way to milk the system,” he said.

“Deliberately, they would remove parts from a bus, and when it reached a certain point, they declared it unserviceable. Once declared unserviceable, they would call someone to buy it for, say, GH¢2,500 official fee,” he noted.

Since assuming office in March 2025, the new management has taken steps to investigate the matter, including engaging external auditors.

“We commissioned external auditors to get this issue resolved once and for all, and they submitted a draft report to us last week for our consideration,” he added.

Ofori-Atta has not been moved from Caroline Detention Facility – Frank Davies https://www.adomonline.com/ofori-atta-has-not-been-moved-from-caroline-detention-facility-frank-davies/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 15:02:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2621073 Frank Davies, a member of the legal team of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has dismissed claims that his client has been moved from the Caroline Detention Centre in the United States.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews Today on Monday, January 19, Mr Davies confirmed that Mr Ofori-Atta remains at the same detention facility where he was first held.

“Let me make it abundantly clear that this diplomatic faux pas being displayed by the Foreign Minister and the Ambassador is most unfortunate. Without fear of contradiction, Kenneth Ofori-Atta has not been moved from the Caroline Detention Centre. For an Ambassador to put this in the public space, I don’t know what he intended to achieve,” he stated.

His comments follow claims by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, that Mr Ofori-Atta had been transferred from the Caroline Detention Facility ahead of his hearing scheduled for Tuesday, January 20.

Mr Davies challenged the Ambassador to disclose the new location if indeed his client had been moved.

“It is just not enough to say he has been moved. He has been moved to where?” he asked.

“And this is the same Ambassador who wanted to extend consular assistance to Ken? I am telling you on authority that Ken remains at the Caroline Detention Centre, where he was, where he has been, and where he will remain until tomorrow,” he insisted.

Mr. Ofori-Atta was detained in the United States in January 2026 following a formal extradition request by the government over issues related to his immigration status.

He is currently being held by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while proceedings continue.

Barekese residents, traders protest siting of 24-hour economy market in Asuofia https://www.adomonline.com/barekese-residents-traders-protest-siting-of-24-hour-economy-market-in-asuofia/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 12:09:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620988 Residents and traders of Barekese in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region have staged a demonstration against plans to site a proposed 24-hour economy market at Asuofua, instead of Barekase, the district capital.

The protestors described the decision as unfair and unjustified, arguing that Barekase has vast available land suitable for the project and remains the most appropriate location to host the market.

According to them, constructing the market at Barekese would not only enhance trading activities but also help move traders from the roadsides to ease traffic congestion in the area.

Leader of the demonstration, Dickson Amankwa, said the protest was jointly organized by traders and members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to demand development for the district capital.

“We cannot allow our DCE to take the development of Barekase for granted by relocating such an important project to Asuofua. We are calling on President John Dramani Mahama to intervene because Barekase also deserves its fair share of development,” he stated.

Mr. Amankwa further noted that since Barekese was separated from Nkawie, most major development projects, including the police station, fire service station and hospital, have been sited at Nkawie, leaving Barekase underserved.

“Now that we are a district capital, it is only right that key infrastructure projects are brought here,” he added.

The demonstrators presented a petition to the District Chief Executive of Atwima Nwabiagya North.

The petition was received on his behalf by the District Coordinating Director Solomon Kwaku Adjei who assured their concerns would be addressed.

The suspect, identified as William Gyamfi, popularly known as Kwasi Manso, is alleged to have attacked the victim, Akua Agyeiwaa, who is believed to be in her early 50s, following a misunderstanding between them.

The incident left the woman critically injured, prompting her immediate transfer to the Juaboso Government Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Following a report to the police, a patrol team was deployed to the community to arrest the suspect, who was assaulted by some residents.

At the time of his arrest, he had visible injuries, including a swollen left eye and forehead, as well as bleeding from his left leg.

The suspect was taken to the Juaboso Government Hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

Police say William Gyamfi is currently in custody, assisting with investigations.

Meanwhile, some residents have alleged that the suspect has a history of violent behaviour, including a previous cutlass attack on his brother-in-law.

Community members are calling on the police to ensure thorough investigations and prosecute the suspect to serve as a deterrent.

Ghanaians now get free breakfast from fuel stations after purchase – Akrofuom MP [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaians-now-get-free-breakfast-from-fuel-stations-after-purchase-akrofuom-mp-audio/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 10:28:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620923 Akrofuom Member of Parliament, Joseph Azumah, has revealed that some fuel stations are now providing free breakfast to customers with every fuel purchase, citing it as a reflection of improvements under President John Mahama’s administration.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Azumah described the initiative as symbolic of a broader economic turnaround, which has brought relief to commuters, vehicle owners, and households grappling with rising costs in recent years.

While he did not list all fuel stations participating in the initiative, he confirmed personally witnessing the program at Nima GOIL.

“You even get breakfast when you buy fuel. It may be surprising, but it is the truth,” he told listeners. He noted that at least three stations, including Nima GOIL, have adopted the offer, emphasizing that the promotion is not a paid endorsement but reflects the changing economic landscape.

According to Mr. Azumah, these improvements have reversed trends that previously saw many Ghanaians limiting travel or parking their vehicles due to high fuel costs.

“Now people who parked their cars because of fuel prices have started driving. We now have more private vehicles than commercial vehicles on the road,” he said.

He added that fuel prices have dropped significantly, prompting some citizens to stock up in anticipation of potential price increases with any change in government.

Mr. Azumah also observed that migration to neighboring towns has slowed, as life in Ghana becomes more affordable and sustainable for residents.

He attributed these positive developments to government policies implemented in the first year of President Mahama’s administration, describing them as unprecedented and evidence of a rapidly improving economic environment.

GoldBod data shows 98.8% of Ghana’s small scale gold exports went to Dubai and India in 2025 https://www.adomonline.com/goldbod-data-shows-98-8-of-ghanas-small-scale-gold-exports-went-to-dubai-and-india-in-2025/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 09:29:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620905 Data obtained by JoyNews Research from GoldBod through a Right to Information request shows that Ghana’s small scale gold exports in 2025 were overwhelmingly concentrated in just two markets.

Of the 103,804 kilograms of small-scale gold exported through GoldBod in 2025, Dubai accounted for more than 72%, making it by far the dominant destination.

India followed with about 25%.

Together, the two countries absorbed roughly 98.8% of Ghana’s small scale gold exports during the year.

The remaining 1.2% was spread across 8 other countries, with Switzerland and South Africa accounting for most of that small balance.

This level of concentration exposes Ghana to some external risks. Any disruption in either Dubai or India would have immediate implications for Ghana’s gold export earnings.

The structure of the trade explains the imbalance.

Much of Ghana’s small-scale gold is exported unrefined and without a comprehensive traceability framework. That effectively shuts Ghana out of more premium markets, where stricter sourcing and refining standards apply.

As a result, exports are channeled to destinations willing to accept unrefined and weakly traceable gold. This limits Ghana’s bargaining power and can force sellers to accept discounts on pricing.

Small scale gold exports have become a key support for the cedi in 2025, generating more than $10 billion in export earnings and helping stabilise the currency.

Heavy dependence on just two markets means that policy changes, regulatory tightening, or demand shocks in either Dubai or India would quickly transmit to Ghana’s foreign exchange inflows and currency stability.

In effect, the concentration that has helped support the cedi also leaves it exposed.

Tension mounts in Akyem Akroso over plans to sell royal cemetery for supermarket project https://www.adomonline.com/tension-mounts-in-akyem-akroso-over-plans-to-sell-royal-cemetery-for-supermarket-project/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 07:27:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620821 Tension is rising at Akyem Akroso in the Asene-Manso-Akroso District of the Eastern Region following a dispute between the Towa No. 1 Royal Family and the town’s Chief, Nana Kwabena Ofori II, over plans to use a royal cemetery for a supermarket project.

The royal family has strongly opposed the proposal, insisting that the land serves as an ancestral burial ground and must be preserved.

They warned that disturbing the resting place of their forebears could have spiritual consequences for the community.

Speaking to Adom News, the head of the Towa No. 1 Royal Family, Opanin John Asare, said the cemetery is sacred and should not be touched in the name of development.

“Any attempt to repurpose the land is a disrespect to our traditions and history,” he said, adding that ignoring the family’s concerns could escalate tensions and threaten peace in the area.

In response, the Chief of Akyem Akroso, Nana Kwabena Ofori II, defended the decision, noting that the cemetery has been unused for over 25 years.

He said the project would modernise the town and create employment opportunities for young people.

The chief clarified that the land has not been sold outright but leased for development, and he appealed to residents to remain calm while discussions continue.

The disagreement has divided opinion in the community, with some advocating for the protection of ancestral heritage, while others support development initiatives.

For now, the standoff continues, with both parties holding firmly to their positions.

Ghanaian family disowns relative after fraud conviction in Australia https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaian-family-disowns-relative-after-fraud-conviction-in-australia/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 07:12:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620810 A Ghanaian family has publicly distanced itself from a relative, Maxwell Kyere, following his conviction in Australia for offences related to financial fraud and money laundering, describing his actions as a stain on the family’s name.

Mr Kyere, who was living in Australia with his wife, was sentenced in August 2021 to a 19-month Intensive Correctional Order (ICO) after being found guilty of financial crimes under Australian law.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Yaw Kwebi told Adom News that they supported Kyere and his siblings before he travelled abroad in search of better opportunities but were shocked when news emerged that he had become involved in a financial scheme alongside other African nationals.

“He left Ghana for a better life, but instead got himself entangled in activities that have disgraced the entire family,” the spokesperson said.

According to the family, Kyere’s arrest, prosecution and sentencing in Australia have had lasting social consequences, with the family name frequently associated with online fraud and criminal behaviour.

The matter has resurfaced amid growing international attention on cybercrime cases involving some Ghanaians abroad.

Only weeks ago, three Ghanaian nationals were extradited to the United States over a $100 million romance and business email compromise scam, while another Ghanaian, Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, was arrested for allegedly defrauding elderly Americans of more than $8 million through artificial-intelligence-assisted romance schemes.

Family members said these developments have renewed public commentary about Kyere’s case, deepening their frustration and embarrassment.

They said they cut ties with him shortly after his conviction in 2021 and have no intention of welcoming him back to Ghana.

“We do not want him to return here. What he did is a stigma and a slur on our family,” the spokesperson stated.

A source close to both the family and Mr Kyere, who requested anonymity for security reasons, said tensions remain high and that Kyere would face rejection from his relatives if he attempted to return home.

The source added that the situation has left him isolated and uncertain about his future, caught between legal challenges abroad and strained family relations in Ghana.

The source appealed to Australian authorities to exercise compassion in handling his situation, noting that Kyere has limited support on either side.

Attempts by this reporter to speak with Kyere’s siblings were unsuccessful, as they declined comment and said they did not wish to be associated with the matter.

Eyewitnesses said the suspects had just robbed the vendor of about GH¢7,700 when the driver, who noticed the incident, deliberately drove into them to stop their escape.

The impact caused the suspects to fall, effectively disrupting their getaway.

Amid the ensuing confusion, one of the suspected robbers managed to escape from the scene.

The other suspect, however, was overpowered and apprehended by residents who rushed in after realizing what had occurred.

The arrested suspect was subjected to mob action before police officers arrived to restore calm and take him into custody.

The stolen cash was later retrieved.

The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to track down the escaped accomplice.

Police have commended members of the public for their vigilance but cautioned against mob action, urging residents to hand suspects over to law enforcement to allow due process to take its course.

The Suhum Municipal Fire Station received a distress call at 2:55 a.m. and rushed a team of seven firefighters, led by STNO II Antwi Forson, to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found the bus lying on its side. The driver, trapped inside, was rescued using extrication equipment, while other passengers had already been taken to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.

According to the fire service, the driver sustained serious injuries, while the remaining passengers suffered minor injuries.

The bus was partially damaged, and firefighters cleared the road, restoring safe traffic flow by 4:53 a.m.

This latest accident comes just a day after another crash on the same stretch claimed five lives, intensifying calls from residents and road safety advocates for improved safety measures along the busy highway.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during early morning and night-time travel.

Deputy Education Minister directs GES to act on video of SHS students displaying charms https://www.adomonline.com/deputy-education-minister-directs-ges-to-act-on-video-of-shs-students-displaying-charms/ Sat, 17 Jan 2026 19:14:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2620557 The Deputy Minister for Education, Dr Clement Apaak, has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to take immediate action following the circulation of a disturbing video showing Senior High School (SHS) students openly displaying charms on school premises.

The viral video, which has sparked widespread public outrage, reportedly features male students from Sakafia Islamic Senior High School and Islamic Senior High School in Kumasi.

In the footage, the students are seen displaying various charms, which they claim give them spiritual strength. Some of the charms appear to be concealed under their school uniforms, while others are openly shown.

The incident has raised serious concerns about student safety, discipline, and the growing levels of violence and indiscipline in SHS’s across the country.

Reacting to the development, Dr Apaak said he had formally referred the matter to the Director-General of the GES for swift action.

“I’ve forwarded the attached story and the associated disturbing video to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service for action,” he stated in a Facebook post on January 15, 2026.

The Deputy Minister made it clear that the government will not tolerate acts of violence or indiscipline within Ghana’s educational institutions.

“We cannot accept violence in our schools and between students from different schools. We are determined to restore discipline in our educational system,” Dr Apaak said.

He also called on parents to take greater responsibility for the upbringing and conduct of their children, especially while they are in school.

“Parents must take an interest in the behaviour of their wards in school,” he urged.

“Parents ought to regularly caution their wards against misconduct and acts of indiscipline.”

Dr Apaak further pointed to the restoration of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) as a deliberate policy decision aimed at strengthening cooperation between schools and parents.

“We restored PTAs because we believe parents have a crucial and collaborative role to play in the education of their wards, especially at the pre-tertiary level,” he added.
