Although persistent downpours disrupted parts of the funeral proceedings, hundreds of mourners still turned up to honour the iconic musician, refusing to allow the weather to dampen their spirits.

As the rain poured, Daddy Lumba’s timeless hits filled the venue, with fans dancing under the open skies and singing along to songs that have defined generations.

The unexpected weather created logistical challenges, forcing many attendees to take cover under canopies, while others were briefly stranded as movement around the grounds became difficult. Despite the discomfort, the crowd remained resilient and united.

The atmosphere captured the powerful bond Daddy Lumba shared with his fans. Even amid uncertainty and inconvenience, they chose celebration over frustration, a testament to how his music continues to inspire joy and togetherness long after his passing.

Thousands gather at Heroes Park to bid farewell to Daddy Lumba [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/thousands-gather-at-heroes-park-to-bid-farewell-to-daddy-lumba/ Sat, 13 Dec 2025 10:55:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2610008 Thousands of mourners have converged on Heroes Park, the expansive grounds of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, to pay their final respects to Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as the highlife legend Daddy Lumba.

The atmosphere is a blend of solemn reverence and celebratory remembrance, as fans hold up portraits, sing snippets of his classic hits, and wipe away tears while the funeral procession moves through the crowd.

Heavy security has been deployed around the venue, with uniformed police officers and private security personnel forming a tight cordon to monitor the flow of people and ensure the event remains peaceful.

Family members have welcomed the strong security presence, noting that it has helped maintain order while allowing friends and fans to mourn without disturbance.

Amid a hush that fell over the stadium, the late musician’s sister, Faustina Fosu, took to the microphone.

“We are grateful to every one of you who has come from near and far to honour our brother,” she said, her voice steady but emotional. “Your presence means the world to us. If you can, please continue to support the family in any way possible, whether through prayers, kind words, or contributions, as we lay him to rest.”

The massive public gathering brings a close to a months-long saga marked by intense family disputes and dramatic legal battles that repeatedly threatened to derail the funeral arrangements.

A Funeral Forged in Court

The funeral is proceeding only after a nail-biting, last-minute development at the Accra High Court.

Just yesterday, Friday, December 12, a High Court ruling cleared the way for the scheduled burial to proceed.

Maternal relatives of the late musician had sought an injunction, arguing they were excluded from the planning process led by the family head, Kofi Owusu.

Ghana bids final farewell to Daddy Lumba https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-bids-final-farewell-to-daddy-lumba/ Sat, 13 Dec 2025 07:36:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609971 The nation stands still today, Saturday, December 13, as Ghana bids a final and long-delayed farewell to legendary highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba (DL).

The burial service is being held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, bringing to an end months of uncertainty marked by bitter legal disputes, deep-seated family disagreements and last-minute court injunctions that repeatedly stalled preparations for his final rites.

The ceremony, described as one of the largest state-assisted funerals for an artiste in recent Ghanaian history, has drawn thousands of mourners. Among them are the President, senior government officials, leading political figures, key stakeholders in the Ghanaian music industry and devoted fans from across the country.

Months of Legal Battles and Family Tensions

Daddy Lumba’s death, though widely mourned, quickly sparked a succession crisis that plunged his funeral arrangements into prolonged controversy.

Several court actions were filed over competing claims to his estate and the right to organise his burial, with multiple women asserting recognition as his lawful wife or partner. These disputes led to a series of injunctions that were alternately imposed and lifted, delaying the funeral for months.

As tensions escalated, traditional leaders and respected dignitaries, particularly from the Asante Royal Palace, were reportedly compelled to intervene to mediate between feuding family factions, highlighting the scale of the crisis surrounding the highlife icon.

Uncertainty lingered until the final hours, with legal teams said to have held emergency meetings less than 48 hours before the service to resolve outstanding issues, including the programme and the roles family members would play during the ceremony.

A Colossal Musical Legacy

Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, Daddy Lumba rose to prominence in the late 1980s, breaking into the national spotlight with his debut album Yɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu in 1989.

Across a career spanning more than three decades, he released over 30 albums, cementing his status as one of Ghana’s most prolific, influential and celebrated musicians.

He was widely credited with redefining modern highlife by blending traditional Ghanaian rhythms with synthesiser-driven sounds and contemporary Afropop influences. His music spoke to every facet of life, from spirituality and social reflection to love, heartbreak and personal struggle.

Songs such as Asem Pa and Aben Wo Aha showcased his lyrical depth and emotional range, while his distinctive vocal delivery and spoken-word inflections set him apart from his peers.

His impact was recognised through numerous honours, including multiple Ghana Music Awards Artist of the Year accolades, and his influence continues to resonate with generations of musicians across Ghana and beyond.

The Final Journey

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium, usually reserved for major national football matches, was selected to accommodate the unprecedented public interest in Daddy Lumba’s final farewell.

After the public service and tributes, his remains are expected to be conveyed to his hometown for a strictly private traditional burial, finally closing a dramatic chapter in the life and death of one of Ghana’s greatest musical icons.

May the soul of Charles Kwadwo Fosu rest in perfect peace.

Months of legal dispute threatened to overshadow today’s ceremony after a High Court injunction briefly halted preparations, with interlocutory orders and family disagreements over burial authority making national headlines.

By dawn, the sprawling stadium had been transformed into a ground of tribute.

Colourful stalls lined entrance routes where vendors hawked memorabilia: T-shirts embossed with Daddy Lumba’s faces, caps and printed programs evoking his decades-long impact on Ghanaian culture.

The familiar rhythms of highlife, many of them Lumba classics, filled the air.

Mourners clasped songbooks, softly singing along to timeless hits, weaving joy and grief in equal measure.

Across the grounds, the atmosphere was reflective but determinedly celebratory. Elderly fans wiped tears as youth swayed to the music, a generational chorus underscoring Lumba’s reach.

A carriage rolled in carrying the casket containing the body of the late music legend.

Many attendees wore traditional funeral cloth in muted colors, while some donned bandanas and accessories bearing the legend’s iconic image.

NDC Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, and the Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu were all notably present.

Nana Acheampong, overcome with emotion, delivers a heavy-hearted performance of the first song he composed with Daddy Lumba.

Inside the stadium stands, families and friends exchanged stories of Lumba’s influence, from soundtracks to heartbreaks, celebrations to daily life.

The palpable mix of grief, nostalgia and gratitude shaped every corner of the arena.

The funeral’s public culmination comes after the Accra High Court temporarily halted preparations amid a dispute involving segments of Lumba’s extended family and the designated family head.

But with legal deadlines unmet and court orders modified, authorities confirmed the rites are happening as scheduled.

In a ruling delivered earlier today, the court said affidavits before it suggested the immediate family had been sidelined in the funeral planning and stressed that the merits of the case must be properly considered.

Lawyers for both parties were recalled to court and the judge ordered the applicants to appear before 2:00pm today and defray costs incurred in the funeral preparation process by paying GH¢2 million into court.

The applicants failed to meet the deadline and their plea was struck out, removing the legal hurdle and allowing the funeral activities to continue as scheduled.

Counsel for the family head, Thomas Kwadwo Osei, described the court’s decision as a huge relief to the family, adding that they can now proceed with final preparations.

The court’s earlier injunction had briefly halted planned events, raising concerns among relatives and fans who were already in Kumasi and getting ready for the solemn event. With the applicants’ request dismissed, tomorrow’s funeral arrangements will resume.

The court recalled the lawyers involved in the case during proceedings and explained that the payment is intended to defray any costs incurred during the funeral preparations if the burial is ultimately called off.

This latest ruling follows an earlier injunction by the same court, which had restrained Kofi Owusu, the family head (Abusuapanyin), from organizing the funeral and barred Transitions Funeral Home from releasing Daddy Lumba’s body. The injunction was initially granted amid a dispute between the late musician’s maternal relatives and the family head over funeral leadership and fund management.

The court had previously emphasized the need for consultation with the immediate family in accordance with Akan customs, directing the first respondent to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to agree on a new burial date.

With the 2 million cedis condition now in place, the High Court appears to be balancing due process with the need to allow the legendary musician’s burial to proceed, while also ensuring that costs associated with any changes are covered.

Daddy Lumba, who passed away on 26 July 2025 at the age of 60, remains a towering figure in Ghana’s music industry, and public attention continues to focus on both his legacy and the unfolding family dispute over his final rites.

High Court halts Daddy Lumba’s funeral https://www.adomonline.com/high-court-halts-daddy-lumbas-funeral/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 11:02:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609810 The Accra High Court has placed an injunction on the planned burial of the late musician Daddy Lumba, following an application by his maternal family.

The injunction restrains Kofi Owusu, the family head (Abusuapanyin) and first respondent, from organising the funeral.

It also bars Transitions Funeral Home from releasing the musician’s body until the substantive case is determined.

In its ruling, the court noted that affidavits suggested the immediate family had been sidelined in the funeral arrangements, emphasizing the need to examine the merits of the case thoroughly.

While acknowledging that the delay may incur additional costs, the judge stressed that due process and proper family involvement must be upheld. “The authority of the family head must be exercised in consultation with the immediate family,” the court stated.

The court further directed the first respondent to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks to agree on a new burial date.

It also ordered that all funds raised for the funeral be separated from accounts belonging to the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation. The applicants were instructed to file an affidavit with the court registrar.

The case stems from a dispute following Daddy Lumba’s passing on July 26, 2025, at the age of 60, highlighting long-standing tensions in Akan customary practices regarding funeral leadership and financial management.

Worshippers flee for safety as trotro crashes into Mosque at Tafo Zongo https://www.adomonline.com/worshippers-flee-for-safety-as-trotro-crashes-into-mosque-at-tafo-zongo/ Fri, 12 Dec 2025 06:43:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609645 Fear gripped residents of Tafo Zongo in Kumasi around 8:15 p.m. on Thursday when a trotro lost its brakes and sped uncontrollably down the steep road from the Tafo Methodist Church toward Zamfara.

People ran for safety as the vehicle picked up speed.

The trotro, with registration number AS 9990-10, crashed straight into the 45 Mosque, slamming into the section where worshippers perform ablution. Part of the mosque was damaged, but no injuries were recorded.

Eyewitnesses described the moment as terrifying. One man who had been lying exactly where the vehicle landed escaped narrowly after people screamed for him to move.

Residents say this is the fifth brake-failure incident on the same stretch. In one previous case, a young boy was knocked down and killed instantly. Many locals say they are tired, frustrated, and living in fear because the situation keeps recurring.

The driver, 25-year-old Amampanah Ayimini, said he had closed for the day and had dropped his conductor near the Methodist Church to buy something. He explained that he was driving down the road to use the washroom when his brakes suddenly failed.

“There is nothing wrong with the car. When it happened, even the gear wasn’t working,” he said.

The old trotro was left badly damaged, with its interior already showing signs of wear before the crash.

Residents insist the road is dangerous due to its steep descent and heavy evening pedestrian activity. They are calling for stronger speed bumps to slow vehicles and prevent further accidents.

“We never knew a car could crash into this place. Luckily, the children had not been dismissed from their evening Islamic studies. It would not have been good news,” a resident said.

More than five hours after the crash, crowds were still at the scene discussing how to prevent another tragedy and protect lives in the community.

SML case: Court grants former GRA boss, 4 others GH₵50m bail with two sureties https://www.adomonline.com/sml-case-court-grants-former-gra-boss-4-others-gh50m-bail-with-two-sureties/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 20:46:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609623 The Accra High Court has granted GH₵50 million bail, with two sureties to be justified, to the former Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah (A4), and four others.

The other accused persons are Emmanuel Kofi Nti (A3), Isaac Crentsil (A5), Evans Adusei (A7), and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (A8).

They are standing trial alongside former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta (A1) and his Chief of Staff Ernest Akore (A2) on charges including influencing a procurement process to obtain an unfair advantage, causing financial loss to the state, and using public office for profit.

As part of the bail conditions, the accused are to deposit all passports and travel documents with the court registry and report to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) once every week.

Because the court closed late, the judge ruled that the bail terms would take effect on Monday, December 15, 2025, when the accused persons return to complete the bail procedures. Until then, they will remain on their existing OSP bail terms.

The court further directed all affected accused persons to report to the OSP on Friday, December 12, to begin processes toward fulfilling the bail requirements.

Prosecutors allege that the accused participated in a scheme to improperly secure procurement contracts for Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd., resulting in financial losses exceeding GH₵1.4 billion.

They are also accused of manipulating the procurement process for unlawful gain and using public office for profit. Additional payments amounting to billions of dollars were expected but were halted by the State’s intervention.

The case has been adjourned to December 17, 2025, for MP for Jaman South, Kwadwo Damoah (A6), to appear and take his plea.

The court declined a prosecution request for a bench warrant, ruling that he enjoyed parliamentary immunity at the time the summons was served because Parliament was in session.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kodua claimed that the recent removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by the Mahama administration is part of a broader plan to “capture the judiciary” and eliminate any legal obstacles to a potential future Mahama bid.

He argued that the circumstances surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s dismissal were questionable, noting that petitions against her were not heard, yet she was removed from office.

According to Mr. Kodua, subsequent rulings in politically sensitive cases suggest bias, which he described as evidence of a coordinated effort by the NDC.

He urged Ghanaians to remain vigilant, stressing that these developments pose a serious threat to democratic governance and the independence of the judiciary.

Court delays ruling on application blocking release of Daddy Lumba’s body to Friday https://www.adomonline.com/court-delays-ruling-on-application-blocking-release-of-daddy-lumbas-body-to-friday/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 16:03:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609437 The Accra High Court has adjourned its ruling on an application seeking to prevent the release of the remains of highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, to Friday, December 12.

The case, filed by members of the late musician’s maternal family, centres on a dispute over who holds the traditional and legal authority to organise his funeral. The plaintiffs argue that under Akan custom, that responsibility rests exclusively with the maternal lineage. They contend that no other group has the mandate to take custody of his body or oversee funeral arrangements.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the presiding judge postponed the ruling to Friday. The court is expected to determine who legally has the right to organise the funeral, manage any memorial fund, and take custody of the musician’s remains.

Speaking to journalists, a representative of the Family Head and first defendant, Kweku Emmanuel Debrah, said the family respects the court’s decision and is committed to unity.

“We are waiting for the court ruling. We are all one people, so I don’t want to say something someone will disagree with. Wherever the ruling goes is a victory for us. If we understood each other, we wouldn’t have even come here; that’s why we brought it before the court,” he said.

“We are all waiting for the court, which has the final say, and whatever they say, we will abide by it and work together as a family.”

Highlife musician Papa Shee, who was in court to support the applicants, expressed optimism about the outcome.

“We are glad the judge listened to the lawyers and said we should come tomorrow for the ruling. I know that there will be victory,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia argued that the EC’s decision overlooks ongoing legal processes involving NPP candidate Matthew Nyindam, who currently has appeals before both the High Court and the Supreme Court. He emphasised that none of these cases have been concluded, making the commission’s rush inappropriate.

He further noted that in similar electoral disputes in other constituencies, the EC waited until all judicial processes were fully exhausted before taking action, questioning why Kpandai is being treated differently.

Dr. Bawumia warned that bypassing established democratic procedures could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s governance and threaten institutional stability.

OSP’s trial of Ofori-Atta, seven others begins today https://www.adomonline.com/osps-trial-of-ofori-atta-seven-others-begins-today/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 09:06:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609320 The long-awaited prosecution of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and seven others formally begins today, Thursday, December 11, following the filing of a 78-count indictment alleging corruption and financial loss to the state.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) announced the commencement of the trial on its official social media page, stating, “The trial of Kenneth Ofori-Atta and 7 others is expected to start today at Criminal Court 5.”

The case follows the prosecution’s filing of charges in November 2025, accusing Ofori-Atta and his co-accused of corruption and corruption-related offences primarily linked to the Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contracts and related public procurement matters.

According to court documents, the eight accused—including Ernest Darko Akore, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, Isaac Crentsil, Kwadwo Damoah, Evans Adusei, and Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited itself—are alleged to have caused significant financial loss to the state through unlawful payments, procurement breaches, and other irregularities during government contracts between 2018 and 2024.

The OSP assured the public that all necessary legal steps have been taken to initiate proceedings and emphasised that the matter will be handled in accordance with Ghana’s legal framework. The office also dismissed claims that the trial is being rushed, describing such accusations as unfounded.

While some of the accused, including Mr. Ofori-Atta, are currently outside Ghana and have cited health reasons for their absence, the OSP confirmed that it has applied appropriate legal mechanisms, including summonses and cooperation with international law enforcement where applicable, to ensure that all accused appear as required by law.

The trial is expected to attract widespread attention across the country, coming at a time of heightened debate about the future of the OSP, with civil society and some members of Parliament calling either for the strengthening or the dissolution of the anti-corruption institution.

Abolishing OSP will be ‘the greatest betrayal of trust’ – CDD-Ghana’s Kojo Asante warns https://www.adomonline.com/abolishing-osp-will-be-the-greatest-betrayal-of-trust-cdd-ghanas-kojo-asante-warns/ Thu, 11 Dec 2025 08:04:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609305 Director of Programmes and Policy Engagement at the Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana), Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante, has issued a strong rebuke to Majority Members of Parliament pushing for the repeal of the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, describing the move as a profound breach of public confidence.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, December 11, Dr Asante said he was “shocked and very angry” that Parliament’s Majority Caucus was advancing a proposal that, in his view, runs contrary to the will of Ghanaians.

According to Dr Asante, any attempt by the NDC Majority to pass the repeal bill would “be the greatest betrayal of trust,” insisting that the action contradicts the party’s public commitments to strengthening anti-corruption institutions.

He argued that citizens have never demanded the abolition of the OSP, adding: “Ghanaians do not want this, so who are the MPs representing… themselves?”

He questioned whether the governing party’s numerical strength in Parliament was now being used to pursue interests disconnected from public expectations.

Dr Asante further urged Ghanaians to hold MPs accountable by openly expressing their disapproval. He encouraged citizens to register their concerns on the social media pages of their representatives, reminding lawmakers that their mandate derives from the people.

“Ghanaians must let all the MPs know on their socials that they represent us and not themselves,” he stressed.

He also criticised the haste with which the repeal is being pursued, noting that the ongoing constitutional review process already provides an opportunity for a comprehensive national conversation about the future of Ghana’s anti-corruption framework.

“What is the rush?” he asked, adding that national consensus should guide decisions on the country’s long-term anti-corruption architecture.

Dr Asante concluded that the overwhelming support among political actors for scrapping the OSP — contrasted with public resistance — only reinforces the need for an independent, non-political prosecutor.

He warned that in a country where “looting of public resources and impunity” threaten democratic stability, dismantling the OSP would be dangerously counterproductive. “We have a much bigger problem for the future of this country,” he cautioned.

Hospital authorities say they tried for more than a week to reach Umar’s relatives, but all attempts proved futile as calls went unanswered.

Umar was admitted in an unconscious state after sustaining deep machete wounds, reportedly inflicted by residents of Wulugu in the North East Region who allegedly caught him during an attempted theft.

Medical staff managed to stabilise and resuscitate him, but efforts to secure family support for his recovery were unsuccessful.

Sources say the family’s refusal is linked to a previous incident in which Umar’s elder brother stood as surety for him in an earlier theft case—an experience that reportedly left the family financially and emotionally strained.

With no relatives showing up and no legal grounds to keep him confined, hospital administrators discharged Umar, raising concerns over the growing trend of abandoned patients and the burden it places on health facilities in the region.

This decision comes after a ruling by the Tamale High Court on Monday, November 24, 2025, directing that a fresh election be conducted within 30 days.

According to the Commission, it also received formal notification from the Clerk to Parliament on Monday, December 8, 2025, confirming that the Kpandai parliamentary seat has been declared vacant.

The rerun will involve only the three candidates who participated in the 2024 parliamentary election in the constituency.

Announcing the development, Mr. Fred Tetteh, Deputy Director of the Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Department at the Electoral Commission, urged the public to take note of the date and participate actively.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a transparent, credible, and peaceful election in compliance with the court’s directive.

It’s premature to call for the scrapping of OSP – President Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/its-premature-to-call-for-the-scrapping-of-osp-president-mahama/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 16:09:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609113 President John Dramani Mahama has described calls from the public and some leaders to scrap the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) as premature.

He urged Ghanaians to remain calm and give the OSP time to tackle corruption and prosecute offenders, while stressing that speeding up prosecutions is key to rebuilding public trust.

“I think it’s premature to call for the closure of that office,” President Mahama said.

“The unique thing about that office is that it is the only anti-corruption agency that has prosecutorial powers to prosecute cases itself without going through the Attorney-General.”

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Governing Council of the National Peace Council, President Mahama emphasized the need for patience in evaluating the effectiveness of the OSP. “It is too early to judge the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

The public must exercise calm and give full support to its fight against corruption,” he said.

He explained that public distrust in the Attorney-General’s office, because the AG is part of the sitting government, makes the independence of the OSP even more crucial.

“People believe the Attorney-General will be very reluctant to prosecute his own,” he noted.

“But if there is an independent office like the Office of the Special Prosecutor, it won’t matter who you are, because they have security of tenure and the prosecutorial authority to act.”

President Mahama urged the OSP to accelerate its ongoing cases to restore public confidence.

“People want to see more prosecutions and more results. I will just urge the OSP to speed up some of these investigations and show that the office is still very relevant,” he said.

Beyond corruption, President Mahama highlighted rising intolerance in communities, which he says is fueling conflicts and disturbances across the country.

He pointed to issues such as chieftaincy, ethnic, and land disputes, noting that these matters put pressure on security services and pose significant challenges for his administration.

The National Peace Council meeting provides an annual platform for the Head of State to receive updates on peace, security, and conflict resolution in Ghana.

President Mahama abolishes COVID-19 levy https://www.adomonline.com/president-mahama-abolishes-covid-19-levy/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 15:03:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2609033 President John Dramani Mahama has assented to the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy Repeal Act 2025, officially abolishing the 1% levy on goods, services, and imports that was introduced during the pandemic.

The repeal is scheduled to take effect in January 2026.

This follows Parliament’s approval last month as part of government efforts to remove “nuisance taxes” and ease the financial burden on households and businesses.

The COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, introduced in 2021 under Act 1068, imposed a 1% charge on the value of taxable goods and services, as well as imports, in addition to existing levies such as VAT, NHIL, and the GETFund levy.

Supreme Court upholds High Court order for NAM 1 to open defence https://www.adomonline.com/supreme-court-upholds-high-court-order-for-nam-1-to-open-defence/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 12:37:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608979 The Supreme Court has rejected an application by Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as NAM 1, seeking to overturn previous rulings of the High Court and Court of Appeal in his ongoing criminal proceedings.

The decision confirms that the trial must continue without further delay.

NAM 1, the former CEO of the defunct Menzgold Ghana Limited, faces multiple charges, including selling gold without a licence, fraudulent breach of trust, defrauding by false pretence, and money laundering.

In 2024, the High Court directed him to open his defence, a ruling he has persistently challenged through appeals.

Earlier, NAM 1’s legal team had approached the Court of Appeal to halt proceedings at the High Court while an appeal against the order was pending.

The Court of Appeal, however, rejected the application, stating there were no exceptional grounds to justify a suspension of the trial. Prosecutors argued that the request sought to “overreach the powers of the court.”

The three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, chaired by Justice Gbiel Suurbaareh alongside Justices Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe and Christopher Archer, unanimously dismissed the stay request.

Following this, NAM 1 escalated the matter to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the appellate ruling.

On Wednesday, December 10, the Supreme Court dismissed the application, affirming that NAM 1 must comply with the High Court’s directive and open his defence.

The ruling signals the continuation of proceedings in what has been a high-profile case drawing national attention.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, explained that the system, initially introduced to manage increased enrollment under the Free SHS programme, was no longer in effect by the time he exited the ministry.

“I can say that I initiated the double-track system in our schools, but before I left the Ministry of Education, we had ended it. Before I left as minister, I went to Cabinet for approval to end the double-track system,” he stated.

The double-track system, implemented in 2018, was designed to accommodate the surge in student numbers. However, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, while presenting the 2026 Budget Statement in Parliament, noted that the system had disrupted academic calendars and negatively affected learning outcomes.

He announced plans to end the double-track system in all senior high schools as part of a national initiative to improve the quality and accessibility of education.

Security Analyst warns against rising coups in West Africa, blames bad governance and unemployment https://www.adomonline.com/security-analyst-warns-against-rising-coups-in-west-africa-blames-bad-governance-and-unemployment/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 06:46:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608797 Security Analyst Adib Saani has warned that the growing manipulation of national constitutions, rising youth unemployment, and persistent bad governance are the major factors driving the surge in coup d’états across West Africa and the wider Sub-Saharan region.

His comment follows a declaration by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, who announced a regional state of emergency at the 55th Session of the Mediation and Security Council meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.

Mr. Saani urged governments in the sub-region to take decisive steps to address these deep-rooted challenges to safeguard their countries from further instability.

According to him, the lack of job opportunities and frustration among the youth continue to make them vulnerable to manipulation and unrest.

“There are thousands of young people roaming the streets with no jobs. When people lose hope, they become susceptible to manipulation and unrest,” he said.

He further observed that efforts by some leaders to alter constitutions for personal or political advantage have created fertile grounds for military takeovers.

“When you examine the countries where coups have occurred, a pattern emerges. In many cases, leaders try to change the constitution to suit their interests, and this fuels resentment and eventually leads to coups,” Mr. Saani explained.

Commenting on the ECOWAS emergency declaration, he said it underscores the need for stronger collaboration and vigilance among member states.

“The ECOWAS declaration means member states must be prepared to support one another and work collectively to prevent further coups,” he added.

We’ll try to keep taps running, but not 24/7 – GWCL on new 15.92% approved tariff  https://www.adomonline.com/well-try-to-keep-taps-running-but-not-24-7-gwcl-on-new-15-92-approved-tariff/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 06:19:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608612 The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) says it will keep working to maintain water flow across the country, but Ghanaians should not expect round-the-clock supply under the current tariff regime.

Speaking on PM Express, the company’s PRO, Stanley Martey, said the new 15.92% tariff approved by the PURC is far too little to sustain the level of investment required to guarantee uninterrupted water.

Responding to the regulator’s claim that the increment was meant to balance affordability and operational needs, he said the PURC itself acknowledges that the figure is inadequate.

“I think Dr Shaffic Suleman has explained everything and explained very well, and he himself has admitted that the tariff given to us this time around is inadequate,” he said.

“And he also admits that he knows that it will be very difficult for us to operate, but then, under the circumstances, this is what they can give.”

Mr Martey said GWCL will continue to serve consumers as best as it can, but the tariff cuts over the years have made both operations and investment extremely difficult.https://www.youtube.com/embed/h1iZqLRI7IE?si=thV3lQQ_MZvZx_X8

“Yes, it is true. It is woefully inadequate, but we will have to work and ensure that we serve our consumers efficiently,” he said.

“It’s very difficult to do investments, even to manage operations. So if every time we have to continue like this, I don’t know what the future holds, but like we always say, we’ll do our very best to ensure that the system works.”

He noted that PURC routinely slashes the company’s required adjustments, leaving it without the funds needed to expand treatment plants, replace pipelines or maintain ageing systems.

The host, Evans Mensah, pointed to GWCL’s rising costs from galamsey pollution and asked if the company can keep taps flowing with the new rate.

Mr Martey was blunt.

“Okay, so for now we have admitted every time that there’s a gap between demand and supply,” he said.

“To enable us to bridge that gap, we need to make a lot of investments, including building new infrastructure like treatment plants, extending pipelines and all that. These are capital-intensive.”

He said the 15.9% tariff increase is nowhere near enough to even clear the company’s books, let alone secure financing for major infrastructure.

“Is this 15.9% adequate to enable us to save enough money or to clear our books, to enable us even to go for a loan facility, to expand our facility? That is impossible.”

Mr Martey stressed that while GWCL will try to keep taps running, Ghanaians must be realistic about expectations under the current funding structure.

“So then we will try to keep taps on, but then it can’t be 24/7,” he said. “Let’s admit that we can only keep the taps on 24/7 when we have built new treatment plants, when we have extended pipelines and all that. This tariff cannot do that.”

For now, he said, the company will rely on strict demand-management measures to ration the “little water in the system” until the funding gap is addressed.

Chaos erupts in Parliament as Minority storms centre of floor over Kpandai seat controversy https://www.adomonline.com/chaos-erupts-in-parliament-as-minority-storms-centre-of-floor-over-kpandai-seat-controversy/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 19:27:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608733 Parliamentary proceedings descended into chaos as the Majority and Minority clashed over the Speaker’s directive to continue the day’s business.

The disruption occurred after Minority MPs demanded that the House be adjourned, following Speaker Alban Bagbin’s deferral of a ruling on the Kpandai seat vacancy.

Earlier, Minority MPs blocked Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga from responding to calls for the withdrawal of a letter from the Clerk of Parliament declaring the Kpandai seat vacant. The letter, dated December 4, 2025, was sent to Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa after a High Court ruling ordered a rerun of the Kpandai election.

Dressed in black, Minority MPs chanted patriotic songs, banged tables, and hooted at the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who tried to maintain order. Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh described the letter as “out of place” and “unfortunate,” arguing that it violated the rule of law and should be withdrawn.

The confrontation escalated as Minority MPs repeatedly obstructed Mahama Ayariga whenever he attempted to speak. Speaker Alban Bagbin was forced to temporarily suspend proceedings, urging MPs to respect standing orders and indicating that the matter would be resolved after consultations with the House leaders.

Speaking on the floor of the House, Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh expressed strong dissatisfaction with the ongoing dispute, noting that it has already begun to affect parliamentary proceedings.

“We want to make it clear that until the Kpandai issue is resolved, government business will suffer. Mr. Speaker, we are saying again that until Kpandai is resolved, we on this side will not cooperate,” he stated.

He further urged the Majority side to “marshal their numbers” if they intend to conduct government business, dismissing claims that the Minority is deliberately blocking parliamentary work. According to him, the Majority appears to be attempting to “twist their hands.”

The exchange eventually escalated into heated scenes in the chamber, resulting in a brief disruption between both sides of the House.

The tragic incident reportedly occurred on Sunday night between 10:45 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

According to eyewitnesses, smoke was seen billowing from the victim’s roof, prompting residents to rush to her aid.

However, attempts to rescue her proved unsuccessful as the fire had already engulfed the entire house.

A resident, Clement, and his father broke into the room in a desperate effort to save the woman but were forced to retreat due to the intensity of the smoke and flames. The ceiling of the room is said to have collapsed on the victim, leading to her death.

The blaze also destroyed all six rooms in the house, leaving more than ten occupants homeless.

Meanwhile, the Dormaa Central Fire Service, which responded to the distress call, reportedly encountered a mechanical fault with its fire tender on the way to the scene.

Police and fire officers have since launched an investigation into the incident.

Walewale Municipal Hospital forced to discharge man who was assaulted for alleged attempted theft https://www.adomonline.com/walewale-municipal-hospital-forced-to-discharge-man-who-was-assaulted-for-alleged-attempted-theft/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 18:51:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608709 The Walewale Municipal Hospital has been compelled to discharge an assaulted patient after more than a week of unsuccessful attempts to reach his relatives, hospital authorities have confirmed.

The patient, 30-year-old Sambor Umar, was admitted with serious injuries following an assault in Wulugu in the North East Region, where he was accused of attempting theft.

Medical staff say he arrived unconscious on December 1 and required intensive care during his first few days of admission.

However, what began as a routine emergency case quickly escalated into a major welfare and logistical challenge for the facility.

Despite repeated phone calls and outreach attempts, the man’s family and community members allegedly refused to respond to the hospital’s invitations or take responsibility for his continued care.

A senior hospital administrator said all attempts to engage his relatives proved futile.

“He was brought here on Monday last week,” Senior Nurse Simon Jabik narrated.

“He was assaulted, and the ambulance brought him. When he came, he was unconscious with cutlass wounds on his body. We managed and resuscitated him, and he is a bit stable now. But we are struggling to get in contact with any family member so we can discharge him and send him back to his family.”

“He is now a challenge to us. Our ward is small; there is no space. We have people who need urgent care, and we don’t have space for them.”

The reasons behind the community’s refusal remain unclear, though hospital staff and a local social welfare officer say there are indications the man may have been disowned prior to the assault.

His elder brother reportedly refused to respond to the hospital’s calls, citing a previous incident in which he was arrested after standing surety for him in a theft case. The Assemblyman and the community chief also declined to intervene.

With no guardian available to take responsibility, and with limited resources to keep a non-critical patient indefinitely, hospital authorities say they had no choice but to discharge him.

The hospital is appealing to the Social Welfare Directorate to provide temporary accommodation or support services for the patient.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, December 9, the former lawmaker explained that Mr Nyindam’s return to Parliament hinges on two key legal interventions.

“Matthew Nyindam will be reinstated as Member of Parliament for Kpandai if they arrest the implementation or the operationalisation of the letter written by the Clerk to Parliament and also stay the judgement of the High Court in Tamale,” Alhaji Fuseini said.

He stressed that once these legal steps are taken, Mr Nyindam’s place in Parliament would remain intact until the final determination of the ongoing case.

Alhaji Fuseini’s remarks come in the wake of a controversial letter sent last week by the Parliamentary Service to the Electoral Commission (EC), confirming a vacancy in the Kpandai seat.

The communication followed a High Court directive for a fresh parliamentary election and cited Parliament’s constitutional duty under Article 112(5) to notify the EC of such developments.

The letter, addressed to EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and signed by Clerk to Parliament Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, effectively initiated the administrative steps toward a by-election to choose a new MP for the constituency.

However, the Minority Caucus has strongly objected to the move, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the letter.

They argue that the action is unlawful, procedurally defective, and inconsistent with ongoing legal processes related to the case.

Meanwhile, Mr Nyindam has filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to annul a High Court judgement that invalidated his 2024 election victory.

Former Secretary to the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue, and two others are facing trial for alleged corruption and abuse of office.

Prosecutors allege the accused bypassed established IMCIM procedures to secure benefits for a company reportedly deemed unqualified, following a media investigation and a petition to the OSP.

All three defendants have pleaded not guilty.

During proceedings, the defence strongly opposed the OSP’s request to allow an investigative journalist involved in the initial exposé to testify, arguing it could be prejudicial. However, the court allowed the first witness protection measure to proceed.

The trial has been adjourned to 12 January 2026 for continuation.

ECOWAS declares regional state of emergency over rising coups, security threats https://www.adomonline.com/ecowas-declares-regional-state-of-emergency-over-rising-coups-security-threats/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 13:15:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608626 The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a regional state of emergency, citing escalating political instability and security threats across several member states.

The announcement was made by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level in Abuja on Tuesday.

Omar Touray said the worsening situation in the sub-region demands urgent attention and collective action.

According to him, recent developments highlight the “imperative of serious introspection on the future of our democracy and the urgent need to invest in the security of our community.”

The emergency declaration comes on the back of a troubling wave of unconstitutional takeovers in parts of West Africa.

In the past few years, countries including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Guinea-Bissau have experienced coups or attempted coups, while security agencies in Benin and other states have also reported foiled mutinies.

Officials say Tuesday’s meeting was convened to assess the growing threats—ranging from military interventions to violent extremism—and to consider measures that can help stabilise the region.

ECOWAS has faced criticism in recent months, particularly after Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger announced their withdrawal from the bloc earlier this year.

More updates are expected as the ministerial council continues its deliberations in Abuja.

Police seek diplomatic assistance to contact US woman who alleged kidnapping by officers https://www.adomonline.com/police-seek-diplomatic-assistance-to-contact-us-woman-who-alleged-kidnapping-by-officers/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 11:55:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608507 The Ghana Police Service has confirmed it is working through diplomatic channels to secure the cooperation of an American woman who posted a viral video claiming she was kidnapped and robbed by individuals she alleged were police officers.

In a press release issued on Monday, December 9, 2025, the police said their investigation into Arianna Naomi Mackey’s claims has faced several challenges.

Preliminary checks by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) revealed that Mackey had already checked out of an Accra hotel and left Ghana on December 5 via Kotoka International Airport, the same day she posted the video.

“Police subsequently contacted the alleged victim to assist with the investigation. She indicated that she was out of the country and could not provide the names of the alleged officers or the number plate of the vehicle involved,” the release stated.

Authorities say their efforts have been further hampered as Mackey deleted the video, declined follow-up messages, and blocked investigators on WhatsApp. She also reportedly refused to provide the contact details of a Ghanaian friend who was with her, citing the friend’s unwillingness to be involved.

“The Ghana Police Service treats such allegations very seriously and remains committed to uncovering the facts in this case,” the release emphasised, signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, the CID Public Relations Officer.

Allegations of misconduct by individuals in police uniform, particularly at checkpoints, have been a recurring concern in Ghana. The police say their investigation is ongoing as they continue to pursue cooperation through official and diplomatic channels.

Speaking at a press conference in Yamfo, the Benkumhene, Nana Adusei Poku Darko II, praised the leadership of the current principal, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Mohammed, noting that his tenure has significantly transformed the school. Under Dr. Mohammed’s guidance, the college secured key accreditations and saw its student population grow from 600 to 6,000.

Nana Adusei Poku Darko also highlighted that the number of academic programmes offered has increased from four to seven, supported by a corresponding rise in qualified teaching staff to maintain high training standards. He further pointed to major infrastructural improvements during Dr. Mohammed’s tenure, describing them as essential to enhancing teaching and learning.

Expressing deep frustration, the chiefs performed traditional rites to signal their strong resistance to the transfer and warned that they would not permit any attempt to remove Dr. Mohammed from office.

The chiefs also rejected the proposal to appoint Dr. Christopher Beyere, former NDC parliamentary candidate for Techiman South, as the new principal, insisting that the people of Yamfo will not accept him.

They cautioned that imposing Dr. Beyere on the institution would create tension and called on the government to avoid politicising the school’s leadership.

The chiefs issued a stern warning, stating that “hell will break loose” if the Ministry of Health proceeds with the transfer despite their concerns.

Scrap it – Sam Okudzeto says Special Prosecutor’s office has achieved nothing https://www.adomonline.com/scrap-it-sam-okudzeto-says-special-prosecutors-office-has-achieved-nothing/ Tue, 09 Dec 2025 06:12:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608363 Former President of the Ghana Bar Association, Sam Okudzeto, has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), insisting that the institution has failed to justify its existence and must be scrapped.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on December 8, Mr Okudzeto questioned the very foundation on which the office was created.

He said the country must now confront a simple question: “Why was the institution set up? Has it achieved its purpose?”

When host Evans Mensah asked for his assessment, Mr Okudzeto did not hesitate. “I don’t think so,” he responded.

“That is exactly the issue that I’m trying to drive here. He hasn’t achieved his purpose because the corruption is still on. I see it every day. Everywhere you turn in every institution, you see it openly.

“They are not even afraid. People are no longer even afraid. You go there, and they demand money from you to do this for you, when you already paid.”

Pressed on whether scrapping the OSP was the answer, he stated plainly that the office has outlived its usefulness.

“Yeah, I’m saying that that institution is not achieving its purpose. Because look at it this way, you have an Attorney General’s Department. In that department, they have a civil section, and then they have a prosecutorial section. This one is headed by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“The other one is headed by the Solicitor-General. What is the Director of Public Prosecutions supposed to do? He’s supposed to prosecute criminal offences, which will include corruption, corruption-related offences.

“There is nothing which makes corruption any more different than any other crime. We have a Director of Public Prosecutions, that is his job. Why do you create another institution to do the same job? That’s the whole issue.”

Responding to suggestions that the OSP was established as a special-purpose vehicle dedicated solely to corruption, he argued that Ghana got it wrong from the start.

“You see, in other places where you have this special prosecutor, it means that there is a specific problem that has arisen, and you want that person to go there and solve that problem.

“You don’t create the whole institution for it, as we have done. If you like, you can go and search and ask where and where do we have that kind of institution?”

Mr Okudzeto referenced global examples to support his position.

“You see, the Prime Minister of England, you know what his position was before? You know how he got the knighthood? He was the Director of Public Prosecution. Justice D. F. Annan, who became the Speaker of Parliament, was also Director of Public Prosecution.”

He aligned himself fully with those calling for the OSP to be scrapped and the Attorney General’s office strengthened instead.

“That is what should have been done,” he said.

“But I suspect that somebody thought that corruption was too rampant in the country, and, therefore, to create an institution for that purpose was a good idea. And then, of course, you appoint an individual.

“Don’t forget, it’s just an individual you’ve appointed. Then you are now trying to create an institution around that individual. What is the background of that? That’s the question I ask. What is his background of that individual?”

He cautioned that the entire experiment was flawed from the beginning.

“I’m just saying that when you don’t train people to do a job, you think that creating institutions, particularly when they think it’s just an individual, it’s dangerous… It’s very, very dangerous.”

Mr Okudzeto stressed that Ghana already has the structures to prosecute corruption, and the focus should be on strengthening those systems rather than building parallel institutions that deliver little.

Parliament notifies EC of vacancy for Kpandai parliamentary rerun https://www.adomonline.com/parliament-notifies-ec-of-vacancy-for-kpandai-parliamentary-rerun/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 19:36:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608301 The Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, has officially notified the Electoral Commission (EC) of a vacancy in the Kpandai Constituency, following a High Court order for a rerun of the parliamentary elections.

In a letter dated December 4, 2025, and addressed to EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, the Clerk explained that the vacancy arose after the High Court in Tamale, on November 24, 2025, annulled the constituency’s parliamentary results and directed that a fresh election be conducted.

He noted that the notification was in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the Clerk of Parliament to inform the EC whenever a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.

The court order was served on the Clerk of Parliament, who was the fourth respondent in suit number NR/TL/HC/E13/22/25, prompting the formal declaration of the vacancy.

The EC is now expected to commence processes toward organising the rerun election for the Kpandai seat.

Kpandai chiefs oppose parliamentary election rerun, appeal to President Mahama to uphold peace https://www.adomonline.com/kpandai-chiefs-oppose-parliamentary-election-rerun-appeal-to-president-mahama-to-uphold-peace/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 15:19:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608242 Traditional leaders in the Kpandai Constituency have firmly opposed any proposed rerun of parliamentary elections, urging President John Dramani Mahama to intervene to preserve peace and stability.

At a press conference on Monday, the chiefs expressed concern over what they described as attempts by certain groups to create tension and undermine the will of the people. They maintained that the electoral process in the constituency was transparent, peaceful, and reflective of voters’ choice.

“We, the chiefs of Kpandai State, stand collectively to affirm that there should be no rerun in the Kpandai Constituency,” the statement read. “The people have voted, and their decision must be respected. We therefore appeal to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama to intervene and ensure that justice and peace prevail.”

The traditional authorities further called on political actors and supporters to exercise restraint and resolve grievances through lawful and peaceful channels, rather than actions that could destabilize the area.

The chiefs reiterated their readiness to work with government, security agencies, and community stakeholders to safeguard peace in the constituency, particularly as national tensions rise over electoral disputes.

The press conference was attended by opinion leaders, elders, and members of the media, all of whom echoed the call for calm and respect for the election outcome.

Concluding their statement, the chiefs reaffirmed their commitment to unity and development, stressing that Kpandai must not be drawn into avoidable conflict over political disagreements.

Interior Ministry orders full probe into alleged assassination attempts on Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng https://www.adomonline.com/interior-ministry-orders-full-probe-into-alleged-assassination-attempts-on-special-prosecutor-kissi-agyebeng/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 12:37:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608208 The Ministry of the Interior has ordered a full-scale investigation following claims that the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, survived two assassination attempts while executing his duties.

The announcement comes after Sammy Darko, Director of Research, Communications, and Strategy at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), made the allegations on Newsfile on Saturday, December 6, amid mounting public pressure on the OSP to deliver on its mandate.

Mr. Darko also alleged that he was handcuffed and assaulted by 17 police officers during the incidents.

In a statement, the Ministry described the claims as highly concerning, noting that verified threats against officials of accountability institutions pose a serious risk to national anti-corruption efforts, which the government has vowed to strengthen.

Preliminary discussions with Mr. Agyebeng suggest that the alleged assassination attempts occurred before 2025. However, officials indicate there is no record of any such threats being reported at police stations or state security agencies.

In response, the Minister for the Interior has issued two directives:

  1. A comprehensive investigation into the alleged assassination attempts, underscoring that “crime does not expire.”
  2. A separate inquiry into Mr. Darko’s claim that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police personnel.

“The Ministry of Interior reiterates its commitment to protecting all lives and property, ensuring that every Ghanaian can conduct lawful activities without fear for their safety,” the statement concluded.

The Ministry also pledged to keep the public informed of the investigations’ outcomes and any actions to be taken.

Kufuor reveals NPP plot against him after 1996 election loss https://www.adomonline.com/kufuor-reveals-npp-plot-against-him-after-1996-election-loss/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 10:58:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608142 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has revealed that some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) opposed his nomination for a second attempt as the party’s Flagbearer following his 1996 presidential election defeat.

Speaking in an interview, Kufuor recounted the challenges he faced within his own party as he prepared for the 2000 elections.

“I had 39% and I think that was exceptional,” Kufuor said, reflecting on the 1996 polls, where he lost to then-President Jerry John Rawlings. “Even before the next election, some people in my party wanted to see the back of me.”

The former President disclosed that party insiders spread serious allegations against him, including claims that he had diverted campaign funds during a tour of the United States.

“They said I embarked on a tour of America and party supporters gave me $100,000, which they alleged I deposited into my private bank account. It was a big lie,” he explained.

Kufuor said the NPP established a committee under the leadership of A. K. Deku, appointed by then-party chairman Peter Ala Adjetey, to investigate the claims.

“Those who made these serious allegations – one has died, and one is alive – could not provide any evidence when called to substantiate their claim,” Kufuor added.

Ultimately, the committee found no wrongdoing on his part, clearing the path for his nomination.

The NPP subsequently held its party congress in Sunyani in 1998, where Kufuor was selected as the Flagbearer and later went on to win the presidency in 2000.

Alan Kyerematen rejected my offer to serve as minister in 2000 – Kufuor reveals https://www.adomonline.com/alan-kyerematen-rejected-my-offer-to-serve-as-minister-in-2000-kufuor-reveals/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 07:13:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608007 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has revealed that Alan Kyerematen declined an invitation to serve in his first government after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won power in the 2000 elections.

The former President made the disclosure while refuting long-standing claims that he supported Alan against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the party’s 2008 presidential primaries.

According to him, the allegations have persisted for years despite having no basis.

“Even when we won power in the 2000 general elections, and I contacted him that I wanted to make him a Minister, he declined,” Mr Kufuor said.

Explaining further, Mr Kufuor stressed that his attempt to include Alan in his cabinet at the time was out of recognition for his competence and commitment to the party, not an effort to groom him for future leadership battles.

He insisted that the rejection of the ministerial offer demonstrated that Alan was not being positioned for advantage within the party, contrary to speculation. “No, no. I never supported him against anybody,” he continued. “I didn’t give him any support to aid him go and defeat anybody. It will never happen.”

The former President’s comments come amid a resurgence of old rumours linking him to Alan’s 2008 flagbearer bid. For years, sections of the public and political observers have claimed that Mr Kufuor favoured Alan as his preferred successor, an assertion he has repeatedly dismissed.

He maintained that he remained neutral and allowed the internal democratic process to play out without interference.

Mr Kufuor’s clarification also ties into his recent reflections on the NPP’s electoral fortunes, particularly the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The former President argued that policy missteps by the Akufo-Addo administration, such as the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme, the PDS debacle and the National Cathedral project, contributed significantly to voter dissatisfaction.

He warned political leaders to take public sentiment seriously and avoid taking Ghanaians for granted.

I was not consulted on National Cathedral project – Kufuor reveals https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-not-consulted-on-national-cathedral-project-kufuor-reveals/ Mon, 08 Dec 2025 06:20:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607935 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor says he was completely excluded from conversations about the National Cathedral project, despite its national importance and the widespread public debate it has triggered.

In an interview on The Delay Show aired on Sunday, the former President stated unequivocally that he played no role in the planning or approval of the project and was never invited to offer advice.

“I was not consulted on the National Cathedral project. I don’t attend Cabinet meetings. All of a sudden, you realise something was going on,” he said.

Kufuor explained that, at the outset, he assumed the cathedral was a private initiative led by individuals seeking to honour God.

He added that it was much later that he learned the state had allocated land for the project and that public buildings had been pulled down to prepare the construction site.

“I thought it was a private initiative. Later, I was told government lands were being used and buildings had been demolished,” he recounted.

Background to the controversy

Announced in 2018, the National Cathedral was introduced by President Akufo-Addo as a personal pledge to God and a national monument intended to serve as a non-denominational Christian worship centre.

Government provided a prime stretch of land at Ridge in Accra and authorised the demolition of state structures, including the residences of some judges, to pave the way for construction.

However, the project soon became one of the most contentious national conversations. Critics raised concerns about the use of taxpayer funds, the lack of parliamentary approval, the demolition of public property, and the transparency of procurement and contract processes.

For more than a year now, work on the cathedral has stalled due to financial setbacks and unresolved controversies, leaving the partially completed structure abandoned.

One killed, 27 arrested in Tamale police operation https://www.adomonline.com/one-killed-27-arrested-in-tamale-police-operation/ Sat, 06 Dec 2025 17:11:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607770 The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team encountered a violent confrontation during an intelligence-led operation at the Aboabo Forest enclave in the Tamale Metropolis in the Northern Region.

While advancing through the area in search of criminal gangs involved in robbery and the trafficking of illicit drugs, the officers came under sudden gunfire from a group of armed criminals.

“The attack placed the lives of team members in immediate danger.

“Acting in line with police rules of engagement and legitimate self-defence protocols, the officers returned fire to neutralise the threat. One suspect was struck during the exchange.

The remaining armed individuals fled the scene with their weapons as reinforcements closed in,” a police report said.

Assistance

The team, it said, approached the injured suspect with the intention of providing assistance and transporting him to the Tamale Teaching Hospital and that upon arrival, the attending medical officer pronounced the suspect dead.

The body was subsequently deposited at the mortuary for preservation pending autopsy.

“The confrontation confirmed earlier intelligence indicating that the criminal elements within the area were heavily armed and prepared to violently resist arrest,” the report said.

Earlier in the day, the report said the special operations team had paid a courtesy call on the leader of Masjidul Bayan, a mosque in the metropolis, Sheikh Basha, as part of its operational activities in the Northern Region.

The visit was led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil and involved 50 personnel supported by eight service vehicles, including a Black Maria.

Sheikh Basha, together with several Imams and community elders, warmly received the team.

During the engagement, ASP Abdul Jalil briefed the religious leaders on the team’s mandate, which focused on combating robbery, attacks on mobile money vendors, rape, illicit drug peddling and other crimes affecting national security.

“Sheikh Basha offered prayers, encouragement and support for the police, praising their efforts in safeguarding communities,” the report said.

Call

Following the courtesy call, the report said the team proceeded to Sanzhirigu, where intelligence suggested that a particular house was being used for the sale and consumption of illicit drugs.

Upon arrival, officers found several individuals on the premises and arrested five suspects.

Substantial quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, along with bottles of Koffex syrup, were recovered.

Subsequent intelligence led the team to Aboabo Forest, a known hideout for gangs engaged in robbery and drug trafficking.

“Throughout the day’s activities, the IGP Special Operations Team maintained high levels of discipline, tactical coordination and adherence to rules of engagement.

Their professionalism remained evident even in the face of armed resistance, reinforcing public confidence in the ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and criminal networks within the Tamale Metropolis,” the report said.

2-year-old dies after being hit by Toyota Pickup in Bibiani https://www.adomonline.com/2-year-old-dies-after-being-hit-by-toyota-pickup-in-bibiani/ Sat, 06 Dec 2025 13:36:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607732 A two-year-old toddler has tragically died at Bibiani in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region after being hit by a vehicle.

Two-year-old Elliana Abena Mensah Beyesel lost her life after a Toyota Hilux pick-up knocked her down.

According to the Bibiani Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), police received a distress call reporting a road traffic accident at Degede, a suburb of Bibiani, involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. When officers arrived at the scene, neither the vehicle nor the victim was present.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect driver, 40-year-old Kwame Wisdom Hlovor, was driving a Toyota Hilux pick-up (registration number GR 7390-25) from the Bibiani Mines Old Administration Office towards Degede.

The driver had parked the vehicle in front of two houses and, while attempting to move off, ran over Elliana, who was standing close to the front of the vehicle.

The toddler sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police later traced both the deceased and the vehicle to the hospital. The body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy, while the vehicle has been impounded for inspection and testing. The suspect driver is currently in custody, assisting with investigations.

I’m headed for public office, but not the OSP role – Martin Kpebu https://www.adomonline.com/im-headed-for-public-office-but-not-the-osp-role-martin-kpebu/ Sat, 06 Dec 2025 11:31:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607691 Private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has hinted that he is likely to take up a public office role soon, but has firmly ruled out any interest in becoming the next Special Prosecutor.

According to him, “That is not the office I have dreamt about, it is clear that some day I will go into public office, it is very clear to me now, but not Special Prosecutor,” he said on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, 6th December, when addressing speculation surrounding his ongoing legal dispute with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

His remark comes amid criticism suggesting he is pushing for the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng and for him to take over the role.

Here is a grammatically refined version:

He dismissed the claims as “paraphrased”, stressing that he cannot be seeking to replace Mr Agyebeng when he is the one leading calls for his removal.

“Having led the charge in calling for him (Kissi Agyebeng) to go, I should not be the one to replace him,” he said.

Mr Kpebu emphasised that while he expects to be appointed to public service in due course, the OSP is not a position he desires.

‘I’m still a bit traumatised’ – Martin Kpebu recounts alleged abuse during OSP arrest https://www.adomonline.com/im-still-a-bit-traumatised-martin-kpebu-recounts-alleged-abuse-during-osp-arrest/ Sat, 06 Dec 2025 10:19:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607687 Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has given a detailed account of what he describes as abusive treatment by personnel of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) during his recent arrest.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, December 6, Mr Kpebu said the conduct of the officers left him shaken and has continued to affect him days after the incident.

“I’m still a bit traumatised,” he admitted, emphasising the emotional impact of the experience.

According to Mr Kpebu, the officers acted in a manner he considered intimidating and unprofessional.

He explained that the way he was confronted and taken into custody amounted to an abuse of his rights.

“The manner in which they spoke to me and handled the situation was completely unacceptable,” he said.

He noted that he expected law-enforcement officers to follow due process, not resort to tactics that could frighten a citizen.

Recounting the moment of arrest, the lawyer said he was taken aback by the officers’ abrupt actions.

Though he avoided giving graphic detail, he stressed that he felt overpowered and unfairly treated.

“It happened so suddenly, and the treatment was harsh. I felt violated as a citizen who has always respected the law,” he stated. He argued that such behaviour undermines public trust in state institutions.

Mr Kpebu also rejected claims by the OSP that he had verbally abused its officers, insisting the reverse was closer to the truth. “I never abused anyone; in fact, it was their conduct that amounted to abuse,” he told the programme. He described the OSP’s public statement as a deliberate attempt to distort events and justify the manner in which he was apprehended.

Despite the ordeal, Mr Kpebu said he remains resolute and will not be silenced by what he believes was an attempt to intimidate him for his public advocacy.

“If this can happen to me, a lawyer, then ordinary citizens are even more vulnerable,” he warned.

He called for an independent review of the incident to ensure that state institutions uphold the rights and dignity of the people they serve.

Notorious Ashaiman robber arrested in joint police operation https://www.adomonline.com/notorious-ashaiman-robber-arrested-in-joint-police-operation/ Sat, 06 Dec 2025 09:37:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2607659 A joint intelligence-led police operation has led to the arrest of a notorious 25-year-old armed robbery suspect, Seth Tetteh, popularly known as ‘Wonder.’

Tetteh, believed to be the ringleader of a robbery syndicate operating within Ashaiman and surrounding communities, was picked up on Sunday, November 30, 2025. His arrest marks a major breakthrough for the Tema Police Command in its sustained fight against violent crime.

He was apprehended around 3:00 p.m. near the Ashaiman China Mall in a coordinated effort involving the Atadeka Police Patrol Team and the Ashaiman Police Intelligence Directorate.

Wonder is alleged to be a highly active criminal linked to multiple violent incidents, including residential, street, and industrial robberies. Police say his capture is expected to significantly disrupt criminal operations that have been targeting residents and businesses across the municipality.

Investigations also revealed that he masterminded a recent armed robbery at a concrete yard factory. During that operation, he reportedly led a two-man gang on a motorbike, holding victims at gunpoint and making away with an unspecified amount of money.

Tetteh’s arrest follows the earlier capture of his two accomplices, who were identified by victims and are currently on remand standing trial at the Ashaiman Circuit Court.

Following the detention of the gang leader, the Tema Police Command issued a strong warning to the public against purchasing stolen electronic devices, especially mobile phones often sold cheaply by criminal networks.

“Police is using this medium to caution receivers of stolen phones, as their arrest has legal consequences for dishonestly receiving,” the statement said.

The Command also expressed appreciation to its top hierarchy for their continued support toward operational successes.

The veteran farmer, whose commitment to agriculture spans more than six decades, was honoured at this year’s National Farmers’ Day celebration for his exceptional productivity, innovation, and dedication to sustainable farming practices.

His recognition highlights the vital role elderly farmers continue to play in sustaining Ghana’s agricultural economy.

Mr Edusei, affectionately known in his community as “Senior Farmer,” has cultivated vast acres of mixed crops, including cocoa, cassava, plantain, maize, and vegetables. He also maintains a thriving livestock unit, making him a model of integrated farming in the Eastern Region.

Speaking after receiving the award, the 82-year-old expressed gratitude to the organisers and encouraged the younger generation to view agriculture as a rewarding path.

“Farming has been my life. I started as a young boy and worked hard all these years. I want the youth to know that farming is not a punishment—it is a path to prosperity,” he said.

He also appealed to the President and government to help address the challenges facing farmers across the country.

Residents of Kwahu describe Mr Edusei as a disciplined, hardworking, and generous community pillar who regularly supports neighbours with planting materials, technical advice, and mentorship.

Local agricultural officers also commended him for blending modern methods with traditional knowledge, enabling him to maintain high yields despite his age.

This year’s National Farmers’ Day celebration, which centred on innovation and food security, showcased inspiring stories like that of Mr Edusei, demonstrating that with passion and commitment, agriculture remains a backbone of national development.

Mr Edusei’s honour adds to a long list of recognitions he has earned over the years, but to him, the 2025 Best Farmer Award stands as the crowning moment of his lifelong journey in agriculture.
