Sam George replies Ntim Fordjour over “NDC foot soldiers” remark in military age limit debate  https://www.adomonline.com/sam-george-replies-ntim-fordjour-over-ndc-foot-soldiers-remark-in-military-age-limit-debate/ Fri, 10 Oct 2025 07:11:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587108 Communications Minister and Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has hit back at the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, following remarks the latter made about calls to review the recruitment age for the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Rev. Fordjour had criticised proposals by Sam George and South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, to increase the maximum enlistment age from 27 to 35 years, suggesting that the idea was politically motivated and aimed at paving the way for “NDC footsoldiers” to join the military.

In a sharp rebuttal posted on Facebook, Sam George described his colleague’s comments as “ill-informed” and “divisive,” while defending his position that the military’s age ceiling should be reviewed to reflect global best practices.

“Sometimes, just sometimes, silence makes one appear wise and knowledgeable,” Sam George wrote sarcastically. “The logic espoused by my friend and colleague is so rich that I am lost for words. Let us celebrate the depth of his knowledge and the latitude of his wisdom.”

The Ningo-Prampram legislator maintained that the current age restriction unfairly excludes many capable and patriotic Ghanaians who remain physically fit and qualified to serve.

He further mocked Rev. Fordjour’s claim that individuals between the ages of 18 and 27 are “not Ghanaian enough” to be NDC footsoldiers, describing it as “deeply flawed and dangerous reasoning.”

“NDC footsoldiers only qualify to be footsoldiers once they are 28 years old, and those between 18 and 27 years are not Ghanaian enough to serve,” he wrote, pointing out what he called the absurdity of the argument.

Sam George concluded his post with a veiled dig at the New Patriotic Party, writing:

“Massive respect to the NPP’s lead person on Defence and Interior. He is the best they have. They truly have the men.”

The debate over the GAF recruitment age has sparked widespread public discussion, with proponents arguing for a more inclusive approach and critics warning against political interference in the military’s recruitment process.

Why Wontumi remains in custody despite meeting bail terms – Lawyer explains https://www.adomonline.com/why-wontumi-remains-in-custody-despite-meeting-bail-terms-lawyer-explains/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 18:30:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2587015 Lawyer for Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has attributed the delay in his client’s release to bureaucratic bottlenecks within state institutions.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News, counsel for the embattled politician, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed that all bail requirements have been met but stated that the administrative processing is still pending completion.

“You know we have been granted bail, and we have been able to meet the conditions of the bail, except that the processing of the order is what is delaying it.

“The execution of the order itself requires verification of the properties used for the bail and confirmation of their valuation—processes handled by state institutions. The delay is coming from those institutions,” he stated.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi cited the Lands Commission as one of the agencies involved, disclosing that officials initially faced challenges in locating the registration plan for one of the properties submitted as part of the bail requirements.

“I’m told that it has now been identified, and the report is being sent to the registrar of the court,” he added.

He expressed optimism that the necessary processes would be completed by the end of the day to secure Chairman Wontumi’s release.

Chairman Wontumi remains in custody two days after the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court granted him bail in the sum of GH₵15 million on Tuesday, October 7, in connection with two separate cases relating to alleged illegal mining activities.

The cases involve Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to him and alleged mining operations in the Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western North Region.

He faces multiple charges, including undertaking illegal mining operations and causing unlawful damage to the environment.

In addition, the NPP regional chairman has been placed on a stop list, preventing him from travelling outside the country until the case is resolved.

I will not recommend Otto Addo’s sack – Nii Lante Vanderpuye https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-not-recommend-otto-addos-sack-nii-lante-vanderpuye/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 17:33:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586984 Former Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has urged Ghanaians to rally behind Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, commending his performance in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The 49-year-old tactician is on the brink of securing Ghana’s place at next year’s World Cup after leading the team to an emphatic victory over the Central African Republic in their Matchday 9 encounter on Wednesday, October 8.

A single point from their final qualifier against Comoros on Sunday will guarantee the Black Stars’ qualification.

While Addo has earned praise for the team’s recent resurgence, questions continue to linger over his long-term future due to the Black Stars’ inconsistent form in previous matches.

Speaking to Citi News, Vanderpuye advised against dismissing the coach, instead urging the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to bolster the technical setup with more experienced figures who can support Addo’s growth and decision-making.

“With the team he has, he is quite inexperienced and immature for them. I will not hide that. We need someone with vast experience to come in as a technical advisor to guide us as we go into the World Cup,” he said.

“But changing him is not something I will recommend at this time—it will be too expensive and also risky,” Vanderpuye added.

If Addo secures qualification, he will make history as the first coach—local or foreign—to guide Ghana to two FIFA World Cups, having previously led the team to the Qatar 2022 tournament.

The Black Stars will host Comoros in their final qualifier on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with kick-off set for 19:00 GMT.

Daddy Lumba’s wife and children seek injunction on funeral arrangements https://www.adomonline.com/daddy-lumbas-wife-and-children-seek-injunction-on-funeral-arrangements/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 16:34:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586957 The direct family of the late highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has filed an injunction against funeral arrangements announced for him.

The direct family, comprising Lumba’s first (legal) wife, Akosua Serwah Fosuh, and their children, claim the funeral arrangements were made without their consent.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, 9th October 2025, the direct family, represented by Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosuh, described the public announcement of the musician’s funeral plans as “deeply distressing,” saying it was first heard of through social media.

According to them, Abusuapanyin Kofi Wusu and a supposed funeral committee had “acted in their own interests” by fixing a funeral date for 6th December 2025 without consulting the deceased’s immediate family.

The statement said the move showed “a complete lack of respect” for Mrs. Fosuh, who is still mourning her husband and making arrangements to travel to Ghana for the funeral.

The release also noted that since Daddy Lumba’s passing on 26th July 2025 in Accra, there had been “a continuous and deliberate effort to marginalise” his legal wife in funeral discussions. The family further revealed that the cause of death remains under investigation.

They reminded the public that the late musician was legally married to Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosuh on 23rd December 2004 in Bornheim, Germany, and that under German law, bigamy is strictly prohibited.

Citing Section 1306 of the German Civil Code (Bürgerliches Gesetzbuch), the family said, “A marriage may not be entered into if one of the persons is already married,” stressing that any second marriage under such circumstances is “legally void.”

The family said they had therefore taken legal steps to halt all funeral and burial activities “until proper dialogue and consensus are achieved.”

“To all Lumba fans and music lovers across the world, we deeply appreciate your love, loyalty, and patience during this difficult time,” the statement read. “We kindly ask you to disregard any unofficial announcements regarding funeral arrangements.”

It added that a “respectful and dignified farewell” will eventually be given to the late musician, befitting his legacy and the love he shared with millions through his music.

Daddy Lumba, one of Ghana’s most celebrated highlife icons, passed away in July 2025 at the age of 60. Known for his unmatched artistry, he produced over 30 albums during his four-decade career, including timeless hits such as Aben Wo Ha, Theresa Abebrese, Yentie Obiaa, Menya Mpo, and Woho Kyere. His music remains a staple in Ghanaian homes and continues to influence new generations of artistes.

Don’t present 2026 budget until… – Angel Carbonu tells Finance Minister [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/dont-present-2026-budget-until-angel-carbonu-tells-finance-minister-audio/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 12:48:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586869 The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonou, has urged the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to hold off on presenting the 2026 budget until negotiations on public sector base pay are completed.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Carbonou stressed that labour unions want the government to finalise discussions on salaries before the budget is submitted to Parliament later this month.

He cautioned that proceeding with the budget presentation without concluding the talks could undermine trust and limit the outcome of the negotiations.

“I will advise the Finance Minister, Ato Forson, not to read the budget until the negotiations with labour unions on the base pay are completed,” Mr. Carbonou said. “I cannot force him, but I can only plead with him. Once the budget is read, the base pay will be capped, assuming it is, say, 15 percent, and that would mean we have no option but to accept what is offered.”

He warned that such a move could make labour feel sidelined and disrespected.

“If the government goes ahead to read the budget without concluding negotiations, it will seem like the outcome has already been decided,” he cautioned. “That will make it difficult for us to accept any cap on the base pay because it would mean the negotiation is a foregone conclusion.”

The NAGRAT President explained that involving labour before the budget presentation would promote transparency and mutual respect.

“If government negotiates with labour and factors the outcome into the budget, everyone will feel consulted, and that will bring harmony,” he said.

Mr. Carbonou also dismissed any suggestion that labour is delaying the process, noting that unions are ready to engage with the government at any time.

“We are ready to be called even next week Monday or Tuesday to sit down. It’s not as if anybody has called labour and we refused to attend. If they call right now, labour will convene,” he emphasized.

He reiterated that the unions are entering the talks with a realistic understanding of the country’s economic situation but expect government to approach the process in good faith and prioritize the welfare of workers.

NAIMOS arrests Chinese and Burkinabè nationals in illegal mining crackdown https://www.adomonline.com/naimos-arrests-chinese-and-burkinabe-nationals-in-illegal-mining-crackdown/ Thu, 09 Oct 2025 08:14:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586720 The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested two Chinese nationals and intercepted several Burkinabè workers during coordinated anti-galamsey operations in the Western North and Western Regions.

The arrests took place on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, following intelligence reports of illegal mining activities within the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in Jomoro.

According to officials, access to the forest was initially obstructed by some Forest Guards, but operatives later gained entry, where they uncovered an active mining site along the Tano River.

During the operation, a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 attempted to escape the scene, but two Chinese nationals on board were apprehended. A third suspect managed to flee.

The Task Force discovered four excavators, three of which had already been immobilised, while the fourth was disabled during the raid.

Evidence of river diversion, two high-powered water pumps, and 12 makeshift mining camps were also found and destroyed.

Other items retrieved included GH¢10,050 in cash, mobile phones, two-way radios, fuel drums, and control panels.

NAIMOS confirmed that the arrested Chinese nationals had been transferred to Accra for further investigations.

Preliminary reports indicate that the suspects had been operating under the guise of a community mining project allegedly sanctioned by Nana Kwame Nkansah, the local chief of Jomoro. Authorities believe the two acted as financiers, providing funding and logistics to support illegal mining in the area.

In a statement, NAIMOS cautioned that it would continue to take firm action against both local and foreign sponsors of galamsey, stressing that “no one will be spared if found complicit.”

Meanwhile, in a related operation at Essipong near Asankrangwa in the Western Region, NAIMOS operatives visited Bugart Mining, where Burkinabè nationals were found working at a site close to the Kwama stream and a major road.

Although the company’s representatives claimed to possess a valid licence issued in 2012, officials questioned the legality of employing foreign workers without proper documentation.

A CAT excavator was immobilised on-site, and the company was directed to report to the NAIMOS headquarters in Accra on Thursday, October 9, along with all the Burkinabè workers for verification and further investigation.

Ghana thrash Central African Republic to near 2026 World Cup qualification https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-thrash-central-african-republic-to-near-2026-world-cup-qualification/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 18:07:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586600 The Black Stars of Ghana took a giant step toward securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a resounding 5–0 victory over the Central African Republic (CAR) on Wednesday afternoon.

At the Stade d’Honneur in Morocco, head coach Otto Addo named a strong starting lineup featuring the return of winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, who made his first start since recovering from injury.

Needing a win to stay on course for next summer’s global showpiece in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Ghana started cautiously as CAR launched two quick counterattacks in the opening minutes. However, the Black Stars’ defence remained solid, and both teams shared early spells of possession.

Ghana soon found their rhythm and began to pile pressure on the CAR backline. The breakthrough arrived in the 21st minute when defender Mohammed Salisu rose highest to head home Mohammed Kudus’ corner.

Kudus came close to doubling the lead shortly after, but his effort was cleared off the line, while midfielder Kwasi Sibo, making only his second appearance for the national team, narrowly missed with a long-range strike.

The Black Stars maintained their dominance, controlling the tempo and possession for the remainder of the first half, which ended 1–0 in their favour.

Ghana resumed the second half with renewed intensity, and their efforts paid off when Thomas Partey fired home in the 52nd minute after a neat assist from Jordan Ayew.

The Central African Republic threatened briefly, coming close to a consolation in the 63rd minute, but their shot went wide. A minute later, Jordan Ayew received a yellow card following a heated exchange with a CAR player.

The Black Stars quickly reasserted control, extending their lead to 3–0 through Alexander Djiku, who headed in another Ayew corner in the 68th minute. Jordan Ayew then turned scorer himself three minutes later, capitalising on a defensive lapse to make it 4–0.

Otto Addo introduced several substitutes, Elisha Owusu, Kamaldeen Sulemana, and Joseph Paintsil, replacing Antoine Semenyo, Partey, and Issahaku, to keep the momentum. Kamaldeen nearly added to the tally but saw his curling effort drift just wide.

In the 82nd minute, Kudus and Salisu made way for Prince Owusu and Jerome Opoku, and five minutes later, Ghana completed the rout. Kamaldeen Sulemana latched onto a Paintsil cross to slot home the fifth goal in the 87th minute.

The emphatic victory lifts Ghana to the top of Group I with 22 points. The Black Stars now need just a point against Comoros on Sunday, October 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium to confirm their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Prof. Aning raises alarm over 40,000 missing bullets from Defence Ministry armoury https://www.adomonline.com/prof-aning-raises-alarm-over-40000-missing-bullets-from-defence-ministry-armoury/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 11:59:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586451 Security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning has confirmed reports that 40,000 rounds of ammunition went missing from the Ministry of Defence’s armoury shortly before the previous administration exited office on January 7, 2025.

In an exclusive conversation with Adom News, Prof. Aning disclosed that the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, had personally informed him about the incident.

Before his death in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, Dr. Boamah had, in July 2025, alleged that thousands of rounds of military ammunition transferred from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to the National Security Secretariat in 2024 could not be traced.

He subsequently directed that the Secretariat investigate the matter.

Prof. Aning described the situation as “deeply troubling and a potential threat to Ghana’s national security and democratic stability.”

“We are conducting a comprehensive study to determine the number of weapons that are currently outside state control,” Prof. Aning revealed. “There are millions of firearms in private hands, and this poses a serious danger—particularly in the lead-up to elections.”

He further cautioned that the rise in gun-related incidents, coupled with political interference in law enforcement, is gradually eroding public confidence in state institutions.

“Public officials, fearful of losing their jobs, often fail to act when political actors break the law,” he stated. “This weakens our institutions and jeopardizes the peace we’ve worked so hard to maintain.”

The security expert also voiced frustration over the illegal use of sirens by government appointees and security personnel, stressing that only the President, Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, and Chief Justice are permitted to use them under Ghanaian law.

“What we’re witnessing is a clear disregard for the law by people who should be setting the example,” he said. “It reflects how much we’ve strayed from accountability and discipline.”

Prof. Aning further urged the government to take immediate steps to address the proliferation of weapons and restore faith in Ghana’s security architecture, warning that failure to act could push the nation toward instability.

“We cannot remain silent while weapons move freely and accountability weakens. The time to act is now,” he emphasized.

Education Minister slams GNAT President over ‘date female teachers, not students’ remark https://www.adomonline.com/education-minister-slams-gnat-president-over-date-female-teachers-not-students-remark/ Wed, 08 Oct 2025 07:26:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586369 Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has strongly condemned remarks made by the President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev. Isaac Owusu, urging male teachers to pursue relationships with single female colleagues rather than female students.

Rev. Owusu’s comments, which have drawn widespread backlash, were made following reports of teacher-student sexual misconduct that led to the interdiction of several head teachers across the country.

Speaking to educators, Rev. Owusu reportedly stated, “We are pleading with our male teachers: if you have that desire, we have beautiful women and single ladies among our staff and in our communities.”

However, the Education Minister has described the comment as “unethical and unprofessional,” stressing that it undermines the Ministry’s commitment to promoting discipline and safeguarding students in schools.

“The GNAT President may have sought to respond to inappropriate conduct between teachers and learners, but his approach was wrong. Any teacher attempting to take advantage of a student will be sanctioned. We are determined to ensure that schools remain safe and secure learning environments,” Mr. Iddrisu said.

He also warned that romantic advances toward colleagues within the workplace could constitute sexual harassment and would not be tolerated.

“In the words of Rev. Isaac Owusu, he said if you want to do the thing, do it with female teachers. I want to remind him that even such conduct can amount to sexual harassment within the professional setting, and that too is unacceptable. If you must, it should be outside the workplace and only with consenting adults,” he stated.

Mr. Iddrisu emphasised that the government remains committed to enforcing ethical standards in the education sector. He warned that any teacher found guilty of sexual misconduct, whether involving students or colleagues, would face severe disciplinary action.

“There are married teachers within the school environment. Such behaviour is unethical, unprofessional, and unacceptable. It undermines the integrity of the teaching profession and the delivery of quality education,” the Minister added.

This follows his inability to satisfy a ₵25 million bail requirement in two separate cases currently before the Criminal Division of the High Court in Accra.

The politician, who has been placed on a stop list and restricted from traveling outside the country, is facing several charges related to illegal mining. Among the allegations are claims that his company caused damage to about 13 hectares of land within the Tano Nimire Forest Reserve.

This allegation is tied to a second criminal case, in which he and others are accused of engaging in mining operations without a valid licence, cutting down trees, and putting up structures inside a protected forest area.

In a separate but related case, Wontumi is also said to have assigned mineral rights without due authorization and supported illegal mining activities.

He has, however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against him.

In an interview on the KSM show, Daniel Yao Domelovo described as “intriguing” Mr. Otoo’s recent criticisms of the committee and his accusations of procedural irregularities.

“Mr. Otoo’s attack on me, I find it very interesting. He said he had presented all the evidence to Mr. Domelevo, a former Auditor General, and I sat there and didn’t take it. Whatever influenced my decision, he didn’t know. I want to put it on record that he provided us with evidence that was fake,” he said.

Mr. Otoo, earlier on Joy FM News’ Newsfile, had claimed that the committee ignored key evidence, relied on questionable evidence and acted unfairly.

However, Mr. Domelevo has explained that one of the disputed documents appeared to bear the signature of the Judicial Secretary and purportedly appointed the Chief Justice, a process he described as irregular and deeply concerning in terms of authenticity.

“It will interest you to know that the letter he presented was signed by the Judicial Secretary appointing the Chief Justice,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi granted GH₵15m bail in galamsey case https://www.adomonline.com/chairman-wontumi-granted-gh%e2%82%b515m-bail-in-galamsey-case/ Tue, 07 Oct 2025 12:36:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2586124 The High Court in Accra has granted bail to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, to the tune of GH₵15 million.

The bail conditions require three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property located within the court’s jurisdiction.

The bail was granted on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, by Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay after hearing submissions from Wontumi’s counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, and the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai.

Wontumi, the first accused and owner of Akonta Mining Company Limited, has pleaded not guilty to charges of facilitating unlicensed mining and assigning mineral rights without ministerial approval.

The charges stem from alleged illegal mining operations in Samreboi in the Western Region in 2024.

Defence counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi urged the court to grant bail, stressing that his client posed no risk of fleeing and was prepared to cooperate fully with the authorities.

However, Deputy Attorney General Dr. Srem-Sai, while not opposing the bail request, urged the court to impose strict conditions given the seriousness of the charges and the accused’s financial means.

“Gold mining is a capital-intensive business, and by their own admission, the accused is a man of substance. It is common knowledge that persons of substance are often greater flight risks,” Dr. Srem-Sai argued.

He further claimed that Wontumi had been uncooperative during the investigation and only turned himself in to the police after the Attorney General’s intervention, despite earlier invitations.

The prosecution also expressed concern about the second accused, Kwame Antwi, who remains at large. Dr. Srem-Sai indicated that Wontumi, a co-director of the company, had not provided any details about his partner’s identity or location.

In granting the bail, Justice Kocuvie-Tay outlined the following conditions:

A GHC15 million bail bond.

Three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

Deposit of all passports with the court registrar.

Placement on the immigration stop list at all entry and exit points.

Sureties must submit copies of their Ghana Cards and digital addresses.

Wontumi must report to investigators on the first and third Monday of every month.

Investigators are to file monthly compliance reports directly to the presiding judge.

The court also directed the prosecution to file disclosures within three weeks, with the next hearing set for October 28, 2025.

Appearing before Justice Audrey Kocuvi-Tay at the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, Wontumi, who is the first accused and owner of Akonta Mining, entered pleas for himself and on behalf of the company, which is listed as the third accused.

According to court documents, Wontumi is facing charges for assigning mineral rights without ministerial approval and for facilitating unlicensed mining operations.

Both charges fall under the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995).

Akonta Mining Company Limited, represented by Wontumi in court, also pleaded not guilty to similar charges—unauthorised assignment of mineral rights and facilitating unlicensed mining. These alleged offences are said to have taken place in 2024 at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The prosecution contends that the company and its director allowed two individuals, identified as Henry Okum and Michael Gyedu Ayisi, to undertake mining operations within Akonta Mining’s concession without obtaining the required written approval from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources.

The case, which draws on key provisions of Ghana’s mining legislation, highlights ongoing efforts by the state to enforce compliance and address unlawful mining practices across the country.

He is charged alongside Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited, which is owned by Wontumi. According to court documents, the second accused, Kwame Antwi, is currently at large.

The charges stem from alleged unauthorised mining operations at Samreboi in the Western Region and are grounded in the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by the Minerals and Mining (Amendment) Act, 2019 (Act 995).

In the first charge, prosecutors claim that in 2024, Wontumi allowed two individuals, Henry Okum and Michael Gyedu Ayisi, to conduct mining activities within Akonta Mining’s concession without obtaining written approval from the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. This, according to the Attorney-General, breaches Sections 14(1) and 99(2)(b) of the Minerals and Mining Act.

A similar charge has been brought against Kwame Antwi, who, as a director of Akonta Mining, is also accused of permitting unauthorised mining within the same concession, violating the same provisions of the law.

The third charge targets Akonta Mining Company Limited itself. The firm is alleged to have allowed unauthorised mining to take place on its concession without the required ministerial consent, making it liable under corporate responsibility provisions of the Act.

The Attorney-General further accuses Wontumi of deliberately facilitating mining activities by the same two individuals, who did not hold valid licences to operate. Prosecutors contend that he enabled their operations within Akonta Mining’s concession in breach of the Minerals and Mining Act.

Kwame Antwi faces a similar allegation of intentionally aiding unlicensed miners on the company’s concession. The state maintains that his conduct also constitutes a violation of the same legal provisions.

The final count is directed at Akonta Mining Company Limited, with the company accused of enabling unlicensed mining within its concession — an act that constitutes a corporate offence under Section 99(2)(b) of Act 703.

The case, filed on October 6, 2025, by the Attorney-General’s Office led by Dr. Dominic Ayine, highlights the state’s increasing use of existing mining laws to address the growing menace of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey. It is expected to test the extent of both individual and corporate accountability under Ghana’s mining regulations.

University of Ghana directs students with CGPA below 1.0 to withdraw https://www.adomonline.com/university-of-ghana-directs-students-with-cgpa-below-1-0-to-withdraw/ Tue, 07 Oct 2025 09:00:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2585978 The University of Ghana (UG), Legon, has instructed all students who obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.0 at the end of the 2024/2025 academic year to withdraw from the institution, in line with its academic regulations.

According to the university, the move is part of a broader effort to maintain high academic standards and ensure that only students who meet the required performance thresholds continue their studies.

The directive, which is contained in a letter dated 2nd October 2025 and signed by Mrs Lydia Anowa Nyarko-Danquah, Director of Academic Affairs, with reference number AA.0IE/10-25, is in accordance with Section 9.26 of the University Regulations for Junior Members (2017) on passing and withdrawal.

The regulation states that a student qualifies for progression only if he or she attains a CGPA of 1.00 or higher in all examinations and meets departmental entry requirements for the next level of study.

It further clarifies that there will be no probation for students who fail to meet this academic benchmark.

“A candidate who does not qualify to progress to the next level shall be asked by the Registrar to withdraw from the University,” the regulation stipulates.

As a result, students who fail to achieve the minimum CGPA requirement are considered not to be in good academic standing and are required to withdraw from their respective programmes with immediate effect.

The university has directed all affected students to formally confirm their withdrawal by sending an email through their official student email accounts no later than 30th November 2025.

For some programmes, withdrawal letters will also be sent directly by the relevant schools or departments.

Founded on August 11, 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast, the University of Ghana is the country’s premier university.

It operates a collegiate administrative structure comprising various colleges, alongside a central administration that includes the School of Graduate Studies and the Office of International Programmes.

12 illegal miners to face court over destruction of 3km Takoradi-Akyem rail line at Nsuta https://www.adomonline.com/12-illegal-miners-to-face-court-over-destruction-of-3km-takoradi-akyem-rail-line-at-nsuta/ Tue, 07 Oct 2025 06:30:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2585912 Twelve individuals are expected to appear before the Tarkwa Circuit Court today, October 7, 2025, for allegedly vandalising a section of the Tarkwa-Takoradi railway line near Akyem in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality.

The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has condemned the incident and called on traditional leaders to take responsibility for protecting their communities.

He also urged the Ghana Railways Authority (GRA) to step up patrols to safeguard the country’s vital rail infrastructure.

The damaged narrow-gauge railway line, owned by the Ghana Manganese Company Limited, plays a crucial role in transporting manganese exports but has come under severe threat from illegal mining activities in the area.

A viral video showing extensive destruction at Akyem prompted a high-level visit to the site on Monday by the Western Regional Minister, the MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Issah Salifu Taylor, and a National Security Liaison Officer.

Investigations revealed that illegal miners had excavated the soil beneath a railway bridge, leaving metal rails hanging in mid-air. In other sections, parts of the track were dismantled, and sections of the embankment had caved into nearby water bodies.

Visibly concerned, Mr. Nelson reiterated the need for stronger local vigilance and institutional coordination to halt the destruction.

Some residents, however, accused officials of the GRA of neglect, claiming two officers had told them that a new standard-gauge line under construction would bypass the Akyem community—an assertion they say has led to the abandonment and vandalism of the current line.

In response, some youth and community members have begun mobilising to reclaim the affected mining sites and restore sanity in the area.

The Assistant Superintendent of Tracks and Railways, Sampson Nyame, explained that monitoring efforts have been hampered by the breakdown of the only rail inspection car.

Meanwhile, the Operational Commander of the Western-Central Police Command, ASP Den-Ben Eden Selassie, confirmed the arrest of twelve suspects in connection with the vandalism.

Mr. Dame is at the CID office to respond to questions over a petition filed by businessman and Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa.

The petition relates to the ambulance procurement case heard at the Accra High Court, which involved Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and Mr. Jakpa, concerning allegations of causing financial loss to the state.

In his petition, Mr. Jakpa alleged that during the process, Mr. Dame attempted to influence him to testify in a manner that would implicate Dr. Forson.

Adom News’ Kodwo Mensah Aboroampa, who is at the CID office reported that Security at the premises has been visibly tight, with scores of sympathisers from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and members of the legal fraternity thronging the area to offer support.

Speaking to journalists at the scene, one of the lawyers, Kobby Amoah, expressed confidence in the former Attorney General’s integrity and innocence.

“We are here because we believe in Mr. Dame’s character and professional ethics. This is a show of support for a man who has served this country diligently,” he said.

In a related development, Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) is also at the CID office for questioning with regards to an ongoing probe into Akonta mining.

I pray God forgives you – Ken Ashigbey tells Stan Dogbe for NPP tag over galamsey advocacy https://www.adomonline.com/i-pray-god-forgives-you-ken-ashigbey-tells-stan-dogbe-for-npp-tag-over-galamsey-advocacy/ Sun, 05 Oct 2025 19:46:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2585508 The convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Kenneth Ashigbey, has taken a swipe at Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe for accusing him of pursuing a partisan interest over his anti-galamsey advocacy.

Although Mr Ashigbey, who is currently the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, started the coalition against the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to pile pressure for a solution to the illegal mining menace, Mr Stan Dogbe, in a Facebook reply to a comment made by Mr Ashigbey, accused him of pursuing a political agenda.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, October 5, Mr Ashigbey, who was part of the civil society members who met with President Mahama last Friday on conversations on illegal mining, said, “Around the Simpa township on the Tarkwa to Takoradi road, there is galamsey happening in clear sight. Is the MCE not aware? HE, John Dramani Mahama, please, this MCE cannot be representing your interests. I can see it from the road today, Sunday, the 5th of October 2025. They are working and polluting the waters.”

In response to this comment, Mr Stan Dogbe replied, “If your government, in the 8 years of your ‘coloured’ fight, had demonstrated the political will and clear strategies deployed in the last 9 months, I guess we would not be here. Instead of gaining on negativity as a form of advocacy, you and your team, as advised by the president, should keep up the fight, but I add do it constructively and stop hiding behind political bias to gain a voice.”

Obviously disappointed and infuriated by Mr Dogbe’s comment, Mr Ashigbey replied to him with a long text disputing his claims and drawing his attention to the fact that he had been consistent in his advocacy against illegal mining, devoid of politics.

“My government,” really? Well, some in the NPP said the same. Thankfully, Ghanaians can judge my actions for themselves. My focus has NEVER been on those who, like you, see every national issue through partisan lenses. My commitment is to Ghana and to those who genuinely care about our nation’s future. They recognise the consistency of our message and the sincerity of our advocacy. When we began this fight in 2017, where were you? What was your contribution to the struggle against galamsey under the NPP? Was that when you also thought our advocacy was “negative”? History will judge us all.”

Mr Ashigbey added, “Some of us are focused on solutions, not noise. You may ask the Minister of Lands, the Hon Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah — whenever we engage, we present concrete proposals. We’ve even shared a comprehensive paper with H.E. John Dramani Mahama at the event on Friday, the 3rd of October 2025, detailing actionable solutions. This is a matter of public record.”

He noted, “Ghanaians can see that our work is not driven by money or politics. They know that our fight is against the imminent environmental crisis threatening all of us, not an exercise in negativity. Perhaps you are not as concerned about the poisoning of our water bodies or the destruction of our environment. Yes, you can now afford imported brands like Voss. I cannot. My children and family depend on the resources here in Ghana — the same ones being destroyed daily.

He reminded the Deputy Chief of Staff that he had no political bias and prayed for God’s forgiveness for him for lying against him.

“I hold NO POLITICAL BIAS — and you know that. Yet, for reasons best known to you, you now seek to misrepresent me. I pray that God forgives you for the falsehoods you spread about me. The truth, and the internet, will not forget. Why should I stay silent when I see wrongdoing? Even HE, the President himself, has called on all of us to support the fight against galamsey. The Minister of Lands urged citizens to speak up when they see something wrong. Would you rather we disobey that call?

The comment by the Deputy Chief of Staff received widespread disapproval on the page, with many condemning his posture.

Dr Ken Ashigbey is a trained engineer from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Dr Ashigbey has also worked in the media space for more than 15 years. He joined the Chamber of Telecommunications in 2017, after serving as the Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd, and only recently left the telecoms Chamber to take up a new role as the CEO of the Chamber of Mines.

The family of a 52-year-old woman who was allegedly murdered at Kwahu Behenase has refused to take custody of her body, citing an inability to pay what they claim is a GH¢12,000 autopsy fee.

According to the deceased’s brother, Agya Noah, the family does not have the financial means to meet the reported demand and is only able to offer GH¢2,000.

He said this has created a standoff with the Nkawkaw police command.

When contacted, Nkawkaw District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Victor Kwakye, clarified to Adom News that although the family was informed about the requirement for an autopsy, no specific amount was mentioned by the police.

He explained that under Ghanaian law, an autopsy must be carried out before the body can be released to relatives.

He advised that the family could negotiate directly with medical doctors to reduce the fee, given their financial situation.

Chief Supt. Kwakye also noted that if the family still feels burdened, they may consider seeking legal options to address their concerns regarding the payment.

The case remains under investigation as the family and authorities attempt to resolve the impasse.

It was my darkest, painful episode – Akufo-Addo on debt restructuring   https://www.adomonline.com/it-was-my-darkest-painful-episode-akufo-addo-on-debt-restructuring/ Fri, 03 Oct 2025 06:00:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584915 Former President Nana Akufo-Addo has described Ghana’s debt restructuring under the G20 Common Framework as “one of the darkest and most painful episodes” of his time in office.

Speaking at the AU-EU High-Level Seminar in Brussels on Thursday, October 2, 2025, ahead of the AU-EU Summit, he admitted that while the framework offered temporary economic relief, it came with severe social and human costs.

“I witnessed the suffocating grip of debt on our economy and our citizens. This deeply troubled me and still does,” he told African and European leaders.

Ghana joined the Common Framework in 2023, restructuring $13 billion in Eurobonds and securing $10.5 billion in external debt service relief through 2026.

The deal lowered the debt-to-GDP ratio from the mid-80s to 70.5 percent, restoring some investor confidence and helping anchor an IMF-backed programme.

Despite these gains, Akufo-Addo said the prolonged and sequential process created uncertainty, weakened public trust, and left ordinary Ghanaians suffering. He pointed to pensioners, youth, and small investors as some of the hardest hit.

“The most painful part was the impact on ordinary people. Their lives and livelihoods were shattered,” he said.

Turning to Africa’s broader debt challenges, the former president stressed that the continent’s $1 trillion burden reflects a global system “not built to free us, but to bind us.” More than 30 African countries, he noted, now spend more on interest payments than on healthcare.

“Every dollar diverted to creditors is a dollar taken from a hospital, from a child’s vaccination, from a community’s future. This is not economics, it is inequity,” he argued.

Akufo-Addo renewed his call for bold reforms, including immediate debt service suspension, comprehensive restructuring, and concessional financing.

He emphasised that debt relief should not be seen as charity: “Debt relief for Africa is not an act of generosity. It is an act of justice.”

He further proposed linking debt cancellation to climate resilience through a “Debt Relief for Green Investment and Resilience” framework, noting Africa’s vulnerability to climate shocks despite contributing less than 4% of global emissions.

“To our European partners, I say this: hear the voice of your neighbouring continent. Stand with the AU and South Africa’s G20 Presidency to advance ambitious reform of the Common Framework,” he appealed.

While acknowledging the responsibility of African nations to diversify their economies and strengthen governance, he warned that without reforms to global finance, local efforts would continue to be undermined by “predatory lending and punitive trade terms.”

“The sacrifices we make today, the compromises, and the collaborations we engage in today can only inure to the benefit of our world. When Africa rises free from the weight of debt, the whole world rises with it,” he added.

According to sources within the community, only four of the twelve people are known in the community.

The abandoned pits, which have been taken over by the illegal miners, collapsed on Wednesday night (October 1) when the illegal miners were at work.

On the blind side of the authority, galamseyers at Kasotie are said to operate only at night.

But they were unfortunate on the said day when the mining pits collapsed on them.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with other emergency services and local volunteers, led the rescue operation.

After hours of search, the team has abandoned the mission after retrieving the twelve bodies.

District Chief Executive for Atwima Mponua, Ibrahim Isshak, says the incident should serve as a deterrent to illegal miners in the area.

The survivors were immediately transported to Nyinahin government hospital for treatment.

Some residents are terrified by the incident.

Justice Kulendi faces fresh petition for removal over alleged misconduct https://www.adomonline.com/justice-kulendi-faces-fresh-petition-for-removal-over-alleged-misconduct/ Thu, 02 Oct 2025 06:42:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584629

A private citizen, Daniel Ofori-Atta, has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama, seeking the removal of Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi over claims of judicial misconduct.

The petition, filed on September 30, 2025, has accused Justice Kulendi of alleged improper interference in High Court proceedings relating to the ongoing ambulance scandal case, Republic v. Cassiel Ato Forson & 2 Others.

According to the petitioner, Justice Kulendi’s actions breach key provisions of the Code of Conduct for Judges and Magistrates, potentially undermining judicial independence and public confidence in the courts.

Mr. Ofori-Atta confirmed that the petition has been formally submitted and acknowledged by the Office of the President.

This is not the first time the petitioner has raised concerns about Justice Kulendi.

In an earlier petition, he called on the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate both Justice Kulendi and businessman Richard Jakpa in connection with the same case.

He alleged that when the trial of the accused persons began in January 2023, Mr. Jakpa used his familial connection with Justice Kulendi to obstruct justice, with the ultimate objective of either securing his acquittal or having the prosecution against him abated by the then Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

The petition asserted that the actions of Justice Kulendi and Richard Jakpa may constitute criminal offenses relating to interference with legal proceedings under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

While it remains uncertain what immediate steps will be taken, Ghana’s 1992 Constitution outlines in Article 146 the strict procedure for the removal of a Justice of the Supreme Court, which involves an investigation by a committee set up by the Chief Justice or, where necessary, another appointed authority.

The vehicle, with registration number ER 760-23, was intercepted by a police patrol team on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.

Accra-based Citi News reported that the truck was later driven to the regional command under the instruction of Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Twumasi Ankrah.

Service Driver Chief Inspector Daniel Addo delivered the truck on Wednesday, October 1.

However, officers at the command noted that the load had been tampered with. Many sacks had been replaced with sawdust, leaving the consignment partially full compared to what was initially seized.

The Asesewa District Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Ackah, had earlier declined to release the truck to the regional operations commander, insisting he would personally escort it. Despite this, a discrepancy was discovered upon arrival in Koforidua.

Meanwhile, the two suspects linked to the case, identified as Sulley Abubakari and Sadat, were absent when the truck reached the command. Reports suggest they escaped custody after being held at the Sekesua Police Station.

In a related twist, three police officers who intercepted the vehicle were detained briefly, handed over to the regional operations commander, and later held at the KTU Police Station before being released following the intervention of the Deputy Minister of Interior, Ebenezer Terlabi Okletey.

The officers have since been asked to provide official statements.

The development has stirred unease within the Eastern Regional Command, with some officers expressing frustration over what they describe as unfair treatment of colleagues who risked their lives in the operation.

The refugees, numbering about 5,621, fled to Kpere in Burkina Faso following the recent disturbances.

A team led by the Savannah Regional Director of NADMO, Mahama Zackaria, had travelled with relief items to support them.

According to Mr Zackaria, the team was stopped and prevented from getting close to the displaced persons.

“We went to Kpere in Burkina Faso, where some of our people ran to, but unfortunately, the Burkinabe authorities didn’t allow us to see the people,” he told JoyNews.

“Yes, we saw them from a distance, but we couldn’t communicate with them or give them the relief items we carried.”

He explained that the Burkinabe officials insisted the Ghana government must formally engage them before any assistance could be delivered.

“They said the Ghana government will have to engage them officially, like they did in the Ivory Coast. Without an official international protocol between the two countries, they would not allow us to engage the people,” Mr Zackaria added.

Faced with this setback, the NADMO team returned to Ghana and redirected the relief items to vulnerable residents in parts of the Bole District.

The distribution has so far covered communities including Saru, Dirbir, Kalba, Gbeniyiri, Nakpala, and Dagbabu.

I’ll walk the talk; working 13 months without pay is unacceptable – Education Minister to newly posted teachers https://www.adomonline.com/ill-walk-the-talk-working-13-months-without-pay-is-unacceptable-education-minister-to-newly-posted-teachers/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 20:06:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584180 Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has assured newly posted teachers that the government is taking urgent steps to resolve the prolonged salary arrears that have left them working for months without pay.

He described the situation as “an unacceptable labour practice” and pledged to ensure the matter receives immediate attention.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, September 30, after receiving a petition from the aggrieved teachers, Mr. Iddrisu said: “I’m here to receive your humble petition and to assure you that I will walk the talk on the issue of the unfair labour treatment that has been meted out to you.

“It is an unacceptable labour practice anywhere that you will work for 13 months without pay… Be assured that I’m on top of the matter.”

He disclosed that he had already met with the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, on September 23 to deliberate on the teachers’ concerns and that a joint cabinet memorandum, to be signed by himself and the Finance Minister, will soon be presented for consideration.

The Education Minister added that the government is planning to recruit 53,000 additional teachers into the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector

The Minister’s remarks come on the back of a protest by teachers from the 2022 batch of the Colleges of Education and university graduates, who marched from Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle through the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance before converging at the Jubilee House.

They are demanding payment of 13 and 9-month salary arrears, respectively.

Lead convener Simon Kofi Nartey explained that all efforts to resolve the issue had been ignored, forcing them to resort to the demonstration.

He stressed that their demands go beyond survival, warning that the quality of education suffers when newly recruited teachers cannot afford essentials like transportation and accommodation.

Justice Kulendi, Richard Jakpa dragged to CID over ‘obstruction of justice’ claims https://www.adomonline.com/justice-kulendi-richard-jakpa-dragged-to-cid-over-obstruction-of-justice-claims/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 14:31:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584007 A Ghanaian citizen, Mr. Daniel Marfo Ofori-Atta, has petitioned the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to investigate Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi and businessman Richard Jakpa for allegedly conspiring to interfere with the administration of justice in the case of Republic V. Cassiel Ato Forson & 2 Others.

Mr. Ofori-Atta said his petition is motivated by a keen interest in upholding the rule of law, good governance, and democracy.

The petition requests the CID to investigate Justice Kulendi and Richard Jakpa, “to unravel all acts of criminality disclosed by their conduct, and take such prosecutorial action as is consistent with law.”

According to the petition, the trial of the accused persons began in January 2023. It alleges that Richard Jakpa used his familial connection with Justice Kulendi to obstruct justice, with the ultimate objective of either securing his acquittal or having the prosecution against him abated by the then Attorney-General, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

The petition asserts that the actions of Justice Kulendi and Richard Jakpa may constitute criminal offenses relating to interference with legal proceedings under the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Key allegations cited in the petition include:

  1. Intervention at Arraignment: On January 18, 2023, after Richard Jakpa was arraigned, he allegedly solicited Justice Kulendi’s help to influence the Attorney-General to permit his release, even though he had not met the bail conditions. Justice Kulendi reportedly visited the former Attorney-General’s office to request this.

  2. Facilitating Contact: Richard Jakpa reportedly obtained the Attorney-General’s phone number from Justice Kulendi and attempted to meet him, sending numerous WhatsApp messages, which were admitted as evidence during the trial on June 18, 2024. The Attorney-General refused these meeting requests.

  3. WhatsApp Disparity: Trial records show that Richard Jakpa sent 68 WhatsApp messages to the former Attorney-General, who responded only twice, as confirmed under cross-examination by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs. Yvonne Atakora-Obuobisa.

  4. Secret Meetings: When the Attorney-General declined Jakpa’s requests, Justice Kulendi allegedly held private meetings at his residence on at least four occasions, secretly inviting Jakpa to interfere in the legal proceedings. This included attempts to halt the prosecution or ensure Jakpa’s release during the submission of no-case stage of the trial. Trial records indicate that outside the courtroom and Justice Kulendi’s residence, the Attorney-General had no interactions with Jakpa.

The petition includes copies of WhatsApp communications between Jakpa and the Attorney-General, as well as court records demonstrating potential interference in legal proceedings.

Mr. Ofori-Atta has indicated that he plans to petition the President to remove Justice Yonny Kulendi on grounds of misconduct and stated misbehavior.

I have never gone for any car from MASLOC – Wontumi [Audio]  https://www.adomonline.com/i-have-never-gone-for-any-car-from-masloc-wontumi-audio/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 12:51:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583965 Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has denied claims that vehicles belonging to the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) were recovered from his possession.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Wontumi dismissed the allegations as baseless and called on those making the claims to provide evidence.

“It is not true that MASLOC vehicles were taken from me. These are mere lies. If indeed it was Wontumi who went for the vehicles, then they should come out with evidence and documentation to back it,” he said.

MASLOC CEO Abigail Elorm Mensah, on September 11, had stated that three government vehicles were retrieved from Wontumi’s residence with the support of National Security operatives as part of efforts to recover government loans and assets from defaulters.

Chairman Wontumi, however, clarified that a person who had been staying in his house had brought a vehicle there, and he had no involvement in moving or retrieving it.

“I was at home when I received a call that a task force wanted to enter the house, but it was locked. I gave permission for them to be granted access. The person who was staying there had vacated but left the car behind. When they came, they rather took my Land Cruiser away,” he explained.

He also questioned the reports, asking, “Does MASLOC even give out Land Cruisers? We are still dealing with this matter.”

Wontumi insisted that attempts to link him directly to the alleged MASLOC vehicle retrieval were unfounded and appeared to be part of a deliberate effort to tarnish his image.

EOCO has seized about 15 cars from me – Chairman Wontumi [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/eoco-has-seized-about-15-cars-from-me-chairman-wontumi-audio/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 12:13:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583935 Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has disclosed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has impounded nearly 15 of his cars.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Wontumi revealed that the seized vehicles include luxury brands such as a Bentley and a Rolls Royce.

He explained that all the vehicles were acquired legitimately and had cleared the necessary port duties.

“At the moment, EOCO has taken close to 15 of my cars, but I have decided not to speak. The vehicles are in EOCO’s custody. I bought them from Bright Selby at Asylum Down near the NPP office. He registered them, paid the duties, and did everything. My Bentley, Rolls Royce, and others are all there,” Wontumi said.

He stressed that despite the development, he had chosen to remain calm and rely on divine intervention.

“I have been quiet because I know that at the right time, God will intervene and speak for me,” he added.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27, 2025, after being invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning over alleged serious criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

He described his arrest experience as both physical and spiritual, claiming that he sensed the presence of deceased relatives — a sign, in his view, that his life was close to ending.

NPP election: Nobody can manipulate delegates’ register – Wontumi assures [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-election-nobody-can-manipulate-delegates-register-wontumi-assures-audio/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 11:06:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583875 The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dismissed allegations that some regional chairmen are plotting to remove the names of delegates from polling station registers ahead of the party’s upcoming elections.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Wontumi assured party members that the NPP’s internal election processes are highly structured and tamper-proof.

He explained that the system leaves no room for any individual—whether chairman, regional, constituency, or polling station—to alter the names of delegates.

“The procedure is clear. NEC decides on a date, which is approved by the National Council. A delegation is then sent from the national level to supervise elections at the polling stations, with constituency executives also involved. Afterwards, electoral area elections are conducted for councils of elders and patrons, who later take part in constituency executive elections,” he outlined.

According to Wontumi, duplicate copies of election records are submitted to both the regional and national offices, supported by both manual and computerized data. Delegates are also given the opportunity to verify registers before elections are held.

“All aspirants are currently engaging delegates and know their whereabouts, whether alive or deceased. Before voting, the list is cross-checked with what is submitted to the Electoral Commission. So there is absolutely no way anyone can remove names,” he stressed.

He further urged members to remain vigilant but reassured them that the process is rigorous enough to safeguard against tampering.

Wontumi’s assurance comes in response to comments by the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, who in a televised interview claimed he could influence the compilation of polling station albums. Abronye DC had threatened to strike out the names of certain delegates from the party’s register, sparking tension among grassroots members.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman, however, maintained that such threats hold no weight since the party’s internal structures and verification systems make manipulation impossible.

Meanwhile, the NPP has rejected the claim, insisting that no individual has the authority to control the process.

In a petition submitted by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, the party outlined several allegations against Abronye DC, describing his actions as unbecoming of a member and damaging to the unity and integrity of the NPP.

The concerns raised include alleged defamatory remarks against Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, false claims that the General Secretary concealed a report recommending Mr. Agyapong’s expulsion, and misrepresentation of disciplinary committee findings.

The petition calls for a full inquiry and appropriate sanctions, emphasizing that accountability and discipline are essential to safeguarding the party’s credibility and democratic values.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas uses gaming to expose corruption in new project https://www.adomonline.com/anas-aremeyaw-anas-uses-gaming-to-expose-corruption-in-new-project/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 08:35:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583827 Celebrated undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has launched an innovative initiative that brings investigative reporting into the world of gaming.

The project, Floodlight Gaming, transforms real-life investigations into interactive experiences, allowing players to step into the shoes of journalists confronting corruption, human rights abuses, and environmental crimes.

By engaging young, digitally savvy audiences, the initiative challenges traditional journalism, letting participants “play through” the dilemmas, risks, and ethical decisions reporters face in exposing the truth.

“For years, my team and I have risked everything to uncover corruption,” Anas said. “But sustaining change also means telling the truth in ways that future generations can carry with them. Gaming offers a powerful way to achieve that.”

Floodlight Gaming includes workshops that bring together journalists, human rights advocates, educators, and game developers to explore how investigative missions can be adapted into playable formats that both educate and entertain while promoting accountability.

The initiative was established by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), the Gabo Foundation, and Anima Interactive, with support from V-Ventures, SpielFabrique, Global Game Jam, Good Game Generation, and the International Game Developers Association (IGDA). These partners provided funding, mentorship, and creative support to make the project possible.

“Hunting the Hunter” Wins Top Award

Berlin-based Greenwave Games won the top prize at Floodlight Gaming’s inaugural global investigative journalism game jam for their game, “Hunting the Hunter”. The winner received $5,000 and a spot in SpielFabrique’s Launchpad Program, which provides mentoring and support.

The winning game, based on Anas’ investigation “Hunting the Hunter: Infiltrating the Cocoa Smuggling Underworld of Ghana’s Western Border”, immerses players in the role of an investigative journalist uncovering a smuggling network that sabotaged Ghana’s economy, deprived farmers, and threatened national security.

“Hunting the Hunter winning this award is a powerful reminder that storytelling and innovation can join forces to inspire the next generation,” Anas said. “This recognition affirms that the fight against corruption can engage hearts and minds far beyond traditional journalism. Above all, I hope it challenges young people everywhere to believe they too can use their creativity and courage to make a difference.”

The inaugural Floodlight Investigative Journalism Gaming Summit, held in Amsterdam on September 24 and live-streamed online, showcased highlights from the game jam finalists and featured discussions between game developers and investigative journalists on storytelling and industry crossover.

“We launched Floodlight Gaming to give game developers worldwide exclusive access to top-notch investigative journalism on organized crime and corruption,” said Floodlight Gaming and OCCRP Co-Founder Paul Radu. “We want to generate a new wave of games that allow developers to create in the public interest. The games submitted were incredible and truly elevated the reporting.”

Other Finalists

The jury selected five finalists from the fictionalized games submitted:

  • Dark Money by Polyvale Studios, based on OCCRP’s Laundromat series reporting

  • Echoes: El Salvador by Stijn Verstraete, based on reporting by Juan José Martínez d’Aubuisson

  • Rise of Viktor Orban by Pol Grasland-Mongrain and Dylhan ‘Zhanko’ Phong, based on reporting by Andras Petho

  • Cocoa Capture by Leto du Plessis, Damian Grobler, Matthew Carlton, Kairan Moorlach, and Cale Adamson, based on Anas’ investigations

“In an era of rampant misinformation, our roles as storytellers, developers, and journalists have never been more critical,” said Anima Interactive Founder Karla Reyes. “Video games are one of the most powerful mediums for building empathy, bearing witness, and telling nuanced, complex truths that often do not dominate public discourse. We are grateful to all jam participants and our developer community for being an essential part of the Floodlight Investigative Journalism game jam.”

Developed by Bernard Lis and Chris Vogel, Hunting the Hunter allows players to navigate the challenges of investigating a smuggling ring. The jury called it an “impressive prototype for an open-world game that delivers a great overall experience and strong visuals.”

“I really enjoyed that we were able to ask our questions to the journalist,” said developer Vogel during the event. “It made our game so much deeper than it would have been otherwise.”

Mahama’s UN speech ticked all the boxes, I am proud of him – Ibn Chambas https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-un-speech-ticked-all-the-boxes-i-am-proud-of-him-ibn-chambas/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 06:49:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583783 The African Union’s Representative for Silencing the Guns, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, has commended President John Mahama for his address at the United Nations General Assembly, describing it as eloquent, comprehensive, and a source of pride for both Ghanaians and Africans.

“I’ll be frank with you, I was really pleased with the speech that I reached out to Mr President to tell him how proud he had made us, all Ghanaians, all Africans, for a speech very eloquently and very well delivered,” Dr Chambas said on Joy News’ PM Express on September 29.

According to him, the quality of the address was exceptional.

“So I indeed was really impressed with the quality of the speech, the eloquence of its delivery and the content of the speech, if you can say so, it ticked all the boxes.”

He noted that President Mahama struck the right balance between national, regional, and global concerns.

“Talking about our national context, because this is, after all, a platform where all countries come to talk about their own national situation, the regional context of Africa and Ghana is always known to be a strong voice for Africa. The President did not miss that.”

Dr Chambas added that the President also addressed the most pressing international issues.

“And then, of course, he talked, as you know, about the geopolitical context, the decline of multilateralism at a time when some would say we need it most, and also the wars going on and other challenges, climate, migration.”

For him, the delivery was well-balanced and engaging.

“So really it was a very comprehensive speech, long enough to cover all the bases, but short enough to keep everyone really interested in what he was saying,” he remarked.

They lament the hardship of having to travel long and perilous distances to access healthcare.

They told Adom News during a community tour that they usually use motorbikes, known as Okada and tricycles of ‘Aboboya’, to transport patients to nearby medical facilities due to the bad roads.

In emergencies when motorbikes are unavailable, patients are tied to wooden structures and transported to Kotokum, Nkawie or Toase to access health care.

The residents are appealing to the government, NGOs, and philanthropists for assistance in addressing their healthcare needs.

Meanwhile, the local unit committee has secured a parcel of land to construct a Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facility, but the project has stalled over land disputes.

Kwame Ben, Vice Chairman of the Unit Committee, is calling on key stakeholders to intervene and resolve the matter.

“We need at least a CHPS compound because people die in the course of rushing them to the closest health facility,” he said.

Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, announced the details at a press conference in Accra on Monday, September 29.

He explained that the pay-TV provider has introduced what he described as “an unprecedented increased value offer exclusively for Ghana,” giving subscribers between 33% and 50% more value depending on their package.

“This arrangement ensures that Ghanaians enjoy more services without paying additional fees. It is MultiChoice’s direct response to subscriber concerns in Ghana, and the offer is unmatched elsewhere on the continent,” Mr George said.

Under the revised plan, customers will automatically be upgraded to higher packages while paying their current subscription fees:

  • Pady bouquet (GH¢59): Upgraded to Access (GH¢99) with 35 extra channels — a 40% saving.

  • Access (GH¢99): Upgraded to Family (GH¢190) with 19 extra channels — 48% saving.

  • Family (GH¢190): Upgraded to Compact (GH¢380) with 22 more channels, including live football — 50% saving.

  • Compact (GH¢380): Upgraded to Compact Plus (GH¢570) with 12 additional channels — 33% saving.

  • Compact Plus (GH¢570): Upgraded to Premium (GH¢865) with 18 extra channels — 34% saving.

For Premium customers, who already pay GH¢865, the package remains unchanged. However, they will automatically be entered into a promotion to win fully paid trips to watch selected English Premier League matches, subject to terms and conditions.

The Minister emphasized that the upgrade applies to both new and existing customers with no restrictions on bouquet choices.

“This takes effect nationwide on October 1, 2025, and is designed to enhance value while addressing consumer concerns,” he added.

Lawyer accuses EOCO of deception in Adu-Boahene’s trial https://www.adomonline.com/lawyer-accuses-eoco-of-deception-in-adu-boahenes-trial/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 12:35:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583577 Private legal practitioner Lawrence Kwesi Botchway Jnr. has strongly criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for its handling of the case against former Director of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, describing it as “official deception” detrimental to national development.

According to Botchway, the charges filed against Adu-Boahene—including stealing, defrauding by false pretences, wilfully causing financial loss to the state, and using public office for profit—were based on a false claim that Ghana never received the cybersecurity system contracted in 2020.

EOCO alleged that Adu-Boahene dishonestly appropriated GH¢27.1 million under the pretext of procuring a cyber defence system from ISC Holdings Limited, which it claimed was never delivered.

In a Facebook post, Botchway countered that the system was indeed delivered and is currently in use by the state. He cited President John Mahama’s statement during the Presidential Media Encounter on September 10, 2025, confirming that the NSB had been equipped with technology capable of tracking individuals behind online hate speech and abusive messages.

“The President’s statement is a direct confirmation of the functionality of the cyber defence system that was procured under Mr. Adu-Boahene’s leadership,” Botchway said. He also noted that ISC Holdings Limited confirmed in writing that the equipment had been delivered, which he argued undermines EOCO’s case.

Botchway further accused EOCO, led by Raymond Archer, of misleading the Attorney-General’s Department with inaccurate reports. He criticised the current National Security leadership for remaining silent despite continuing to use the system.

Describing the situation as a breach of trust, he warned that “such conduct is cancerous to nation-building,” and cited scripture, noting that EOCO’s actions amounted to violating the commandment against false testimony.

“Fellow Ghanaians, the irony is that the succeeding National Security is silent and giving oxygen to EOCO’s official deception,” he added, while thanking President Mahama for indirectly confirming the system’s existence.

Justin Kodua sends important message on NPP presidential primaries [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/justin-kodua-sends-important-message-on-npp-presidential-primaries-listen/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 12:13:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583556 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has assured party members and the public that the upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, will be free, fair, and transparent.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kodua said the party’s internal processes were on track.

“So far, everything is on course. The vetting committee is done with its job, and the election committee is also doing its work. We are waiting for the report to be submitted to the party so that NEC and the National Council will assess it between 7 and 9 October. After that, the notice of poll of those who will be cleared will be published,” he explained.

He stressed that measures have been put in place to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants and delegates.

“We are actively working to ensure that every candidate gets the album by the end of November so they can scrutinise it. In 2023/2024, the NPP organised one of the best parliamentary elections, devoid of noise and chaos. It will be done again this time around. Both winners and losers will know it was a fair ground,” Kodua said.

He further assured that no one within the party’s hierarchy would be allowed to manipulate the register.

“I can assure party members nobody can abuse their office to add or remove any names from the album,” he emphasised.

The January 2026 primaries will see five aspirants, all cleared through vetting, competing for the flagbearer slot.

They include former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Bosomtwe MP and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

The contest is regarded as a crucial step in reorganising the NPP after its 2024 electoral defeat, with party leaders emphasising that fairness will be central to restoring grassroots confidence.

Justin Kodua laments rising personal interests over unity in NPP [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/justin-kodua-laments-rising-personal-interests-over-unity-in-npp-audio/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 11:36:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583542 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has warned that rising personal interests within the party are threatening its unity and long-term stability.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Kodua expressed concern that many members are prioritizing individual ambitions over the collective good of the NPP.

“Currently, the personal interests are too much. Instead of collectively serving the elephant party, people are pursuing one interest or another—focusing on who they want to become flagbearer, fighting for positions, or even planning to oust the General Secretary,” he lamented.

Kodua emphasized that such conduct distracts from the party’s core mission and risks undermining the structures established by its founding fathers.

“The people we are rooting for to be flagbearers may win or lose. They may even leave and forget about us. But the party will remain, and that is what we must work hard to protect,” he noted.

He called on all organs of the NPP, including the National Council, Council of Elders, MPs, and other officers, to speak up when issues arise rather than leaving the responsibility solely to him.

“It is important for everyone in the party to speak up when things are not going well because what is wrong is wrong and what is right is right. If you remain quiet, it implies you support what is happening,” Kodua said.

While acknowledging that the party is in a “difficult situation,” he insisted he will continue to play his part by speaking the truth, whether it earns him praise or criticism.

“I don’t care if someone likes or hates me. It is part of the hazards of the job. Posterity will judge us all,” he added.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kodua emphasized that the party’s current state cannot be downplayed.
“We cannot pretend. The NPP is in a very difficult and delicate situation,” he said.

With preparations for the NPP’s presidential primaries underway, he noted that elections naturally bring tension, mistrust, and occasional backstabbing. However, he stressed that leadership must remain firm and neutral to maintain order.

While some believe that national executives have abandoned their responsibilities, Kodua insisted this is not the case. With National Chairman Stephen Ntim unwell, he explained that he had to take on additional duties until First National Vice Chairman Smith Butey stepped in to assist.
“We are all doing our best. As General Secretary, I must remain neutral because if not, by the end of everything, there will be problems,” he said.

Kodua also disclosed that the party is working on expanding the Electoral College and updating the delegate register following the outcomes of the national delegates conference in July 2025. He noted that the IT team is ensuring a credible and comprehensive polling album.

Addressing calls for sanctions against party members over alleged misconduct, he clarified the limits of his role.
“It is not in my power to sanction or dismiss people from the party. Article 4 of the constitution spells out the processes. My role is administrative, compiling the album and speaking as spokesperson, but there is a limit,” he explained.

Drawing an analogy, Kodua likened his role to that of a football star:
“As the General Secretary, we may be like Lionel Messi on the field, but if you don’t have adequate support, you will be fruitless,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to his responsibilities, emphasizing that unity and discipline among all executives will be crucial to steering the party through these challenging times.

Poll shows Asiedu Nketia slightly ahead of Bawumia in potential 2028 presidential race https://www.adomonline.com/poll-shows-asiedu-nketia-slightly-ahead-of-bawumia-in-potential-2028-presidential-race/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 11:00:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583536 A new tracking poll by Global InfoAnalytics indicates that National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, is marginally ahead of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in a potential 2028 presidential showdown.

According to the survey, Asiedu Nketia enjoys the support of 50% of respondents, while Dr. Bawumia garners 45%. Another 5% indicated they would back a different candidate.

The results point to a closely contested race, with the NDC leader holding a slim five-point lead over the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.

Analysts say the findings highlight the evolving dynamics of Ghana’s political landscape, as both the governing NPP and the opposition NDC begin early preparations for the 2028 elections.

Global InfoAnalytics noted that the narrow margin underscores the likelihood of a fiercely contested race should this matchup materialize.

Corpses from Gbenyiri conflict decompose in Damongo morgue https://www.adomonline.com/corpses-from-gbenyiri-conflict-decompose-in-damongo-morgue/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 08:23:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583430 Three corpses from the Gbenyiri conflict in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District of the Savannah Region have decomposed at the St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital mortuary in Damongo.

The situation has created a strong odour affecting hospital staff and passersby.

The three, all male, are part of seven bodies moved in August 2025 from Sawla to Damongo due to a lack of space.

Hospital sources told JoyNews the problem was caused by a mortuary fridge that broke down for a week.

The conflict began on August 24, after a dispute over ownership of a 10-square-metre piece of land in Gbenyiri.

The matter was settled at the Chief’s palace, but one party disagreed. Violence broke out, leaving five people dead.

The clashes spread to other parts of Sawla-Tuna-Kalba and the Bole District.

When contacted, the Savannah Regional Crime Officer, ASP Godfrey Quaye, said the police had not been officially notified by the hospital.

“Well, I’m hearing this from you for the first time because the hospital officials are yet to speak to the police,” ASP Quaye said.

On when the bodies would be released for burial, ASP Quaye explained, “You see, the Regional Minister said we should hold on, and also, there are other processes that we need to go through to ensure that nothing goes wrong, and we don’t also know whether government will do the burial or not.”

Sources say the Savannah Regional Security Council is divided.

Some members support a diplomatic burial to avoid tension. Others want the bodies released to families.

In the absence of Regional Minister Salisu Be-Awuribe, hospital authorities contacted the West Gonja MCE, Yakubu Yussif Castro, to help fix the fridge. That effort failed.

On Saturday, September 27, hospital officials brought in a technician from Tamale to repair the fridge. As of filing this report, the situation had not improved.

Currently, Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Hospital holds five bodies. St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital has seven. Three bodies at Sawla have already been identified and buried.
