The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, on behalf of the party, received the NPP members.

During their interaction, Mr. Kodua apologised to the NDC leadership over remarks made by some NPP members regarding the incident.

Mr. Kodua appealed that any individual comments must not be taken as the NPP’s official position, stressing that death or the circumstance is not one anybody should even wish for their worst enemy.

VRA clarifies ownership of helicopter in Nkawkaw emergency landing https://www.adomonline.com/vra-clarifies-ownership-of-helicopter-in-nkawkaw-emergency-landing/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 16:53:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566768

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has dismissed media reports suggesting it owns the helicopter with registration number 9G-AFW, which made an emergency landing in Nkawkaw, Eastern Region, on Monday, August 11, 2025.

The incident, attributed to poor visibility from bad weather, followed a similar emergency landing at Ajumako Kokoben on Wednesday, August 6.

VRA’s Director of Corporate Affairs and External Relations, David Adomako, clarified in a statement: “We would like to state unequivocally that the said helicopter does not belong to VRA, and neither does VRA operate aviation services.”

He further explained that the aircraft is owned by Volta River Aviation Limited (VRAL), a completely separate entity registered with the Petroleum Commission.

“Our mandate is to provide affordable, reliable electricity to power economies and add value to lives. Aviation services are not part of our mandate,” the statement added.

VRA has urged the public and media to disregard the inaccurate reports and verify information with its Corporate Affairs and External Relations Department before publication.

For official queries, the Authority directed the public to contact corpcomm@vra.com or reach Francis Kobena Abban, Manager of Corporate Communications and Branding, at 0302-218551 or 0245-823734.

Adding to the concern, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) confirmed that the aircraft is not registered with the agency. Chief Forecaster Felicity Ahafianyo warned that unregistered aircraft may not have access to official weather updates, raising questions about flight safety.

The clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny over aviation safety following last week’s fatal military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

“Given recent incidents, it is critical that only verified information is shared to avoid confusion and panic,” VRA noted.

Justice Oppong reassigned; Raymond Atuguba appointed GLC’s Ag. Director of Legal Education https://www.adomonline.com/justice-oppong-reassigned-raymond-atuguba-appointed-glcs-ag-director-of-legal-education/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 16:15:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566759 Former Dean of the University of Ghana School of Law, Prof Raymond Atuguba, has been appointed Acting Director of Legal Education at the General Legal Council.

His appointment, effective September 1, follows the recall ofJustice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong from the role.

A letter signed by Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie stated that Justice Oppong, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, is being reassigned to focus fully on judicial duties.

Prof. Atuguba will lead the Council’s legal education administration while a search is undertaken for a permanent Director of Legal Education.

The Acting Chief Justice commended Justice Oppong for his “significant contribution” to professional legal training during his tenure.

Prof Atuguba’s appointment is expected to drive a new direction for the council.

His opinions prior to this have been intense as he believes many of Ghana’s laws are outmoded and make it difficult for people to adhere to ethical principles in the corporate world, particularly the banking sector.

“Our laws are not in tune with the times; how do you determine ethics with such a legal framework?” he questioned at an event in February 2024.

Prof. Atuguba said the country still had about 10 English laws in its statutes passed between 1539 and 1863.

He said since the laws, including the Bills of Exchange Act, 1961 (ACT 55), were passed years ago, there had been significant developments that required that new laws be passed to align with current trends, but that had not been done.

His presentation was on the topic “Ethics, financial conduct, and the political economy in Ghana and other emerging markets.”

Helicopter crash probe will be transparent, nothing will be covered up – Defence Ministry https://www.adomonline.com/helicopter-crash-probe-will-be-transparent-nothing-will-be-covered-up-defence-ministry/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 14:40:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566735

The Ministry of Defence has assured the public of a thorough and transparent investigation into the August 6 helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, which claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

Addressing chiefs in Accra on August 13, Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi said the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) had begun investigations and sought international collaboration to ensure credibility.

“We have received a positive response to our request for international support. Nothing will be covered up, the process will be transparent, and the public will know exactly what happened and the cause of this tragic accident,” he stated.

Mr. Genfi also urged the media to exercise caution in reporting on the incident.

The crash victims included Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The government declared a three-day national mourning period from August 7, with a flower-laying ceremony and a memorial service on August 9. A state funeral for the victims is scheduled for Friday, August 15, at Black Star Square in Accra.

The GAF confirmed that the Z-9 helicopter, which departed Accra at 09:12 GMT for an anti-illegal mining event in Obuasi, went “off the radar” before the crash, and a subsequent search-and-rescue operation revealed that all eight on board had died.

Sir Obama was taken into custody in the early hours of Wednesday after allegedly sharing images and videos on social media showing individuals handling high-grade weapons.

In a statement, the police confirmed that Mr. Adomako is currently assisting investigators in examining the content, which is suspected to be connected to a wider criminal network.

Authorities noted that several weeks of operations have already led to the seizure of a significant cache of illegal arms and ammunition.

The Police also highlighted that three other suspects have been detained in unrelated cases involving death threats and the dissemination of false information.

Mr. Adomako’s arrest is described as a central step in dismantling networks responsible for circulating dangerous weapons.

In a related development, Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu were arrested on August 12 over a viral TikTok video allegedly featuring a woman issuing death threats against President John Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

The suspects are in custody and cooperating with ongoing investigations.

NPP Youth Organisers pick nomination forms for Bawumia [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-youth-organisers-pick-nomination-forms-for-bawumia-video/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 13:01:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566713 Over 490 youth organisers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have collected nomination forms for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s January 2026 presidential primary.

The coalition, made up of substantive and deputy youth leaders from constituencies nationwide, picked up the forms at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, and presented them to Dr. Bawumia at his campaign office, pledging their unwavering support.

Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude for what he described as a remarkable show of trust. “The youth organisers of our party across the length and breadth of our party, 490 out of 552, came to me. The leadership requested that they wanted to put their widows’ mite together and pick my nomination forms for me. I agreed because that was a remarkable vote of confidence in me,” he said.

“This morning, they have fulfilled that promise they made and have picked the form from the party’s head office and delivered it to me. The youth are a major asset of our party and the nation. They represent the future. I want to thank them for this major vote of confidence,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia cautioned the team against divisive politics and insults, stressing the importance of unity within the party. “I’m minded to contest the flagbearership of the NPP. I will make a full declaration in that regard when I go to submit the form you have delivered to me,” he said.

He also urged party leaders to maintain decorum during the contest, focusing on substantive policy issues rather than personal attacks.

Helicopter crash: Why remains were carried in sacks – Obuasi West MCE [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/helicopter-crash-why-remains-were-carried-in-sacks-obuasi-west-mce-listen/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 11:34:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566636
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has responded to criticism over how the remains of the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash were handled.

Some Ghanaians, including the President of the Academy of Forensics, Dr. Pet-Paul Wepeba, condemned the decision to transport the bodies in sacks, calling it “undignified” and inconsistent with both Ghana’s disaster recovery protocols and international best practices. Dr. Wepeba stressed that secure, non-leaking body bags with zippers should have been used.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Kannin explained that the method used was the only practical option at the time, given the condition of the remains.

“The place was very hot, so how could anyone have gone there to take anything? Even the body bags we requested could not be used. When the remains were placed inside, the material melted, and there was nothing else we could do,” she said.

She revealed that AngloGold Ashanti Hospital had supplied several body bags, but they became unusable due to extreme heat at the crash site.

Madam Kannin also addressed speculation that residents who arrived early at the scene might have stolen personal effects, dismissing such claims as unfounded. She urged the public to show respect and caution in discussions about the tragedy, warning against spreading unverified or demeaning remarks.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing, with authorities examining whether adverse weather conditions played a role.

The incident claimed the lives of Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and three military personnel—Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manean Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

A state burial service, bringing together multiple religious denominations, is scheduled for Friday, August 15.

President John Mahama has also announced the creation of an Education Fund to support the children of the deceased.

There were multiple pickup location changes before helicopter crash – Obuasi MCE recounts [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/there-were-multiple-pickup-location-changes-before-helicopter-crash-obuasi-mce-recounts-audio/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 10:35:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566594 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Obuasi West, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, has recounted her final conversations with Samuel Aboagye, one of the victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

Aboagye, who was serving as Acting Deputy Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), was aboard the ill-fated Z-9 Air Force helicopter that went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District — a tragedy that has plunged the nation into mourning.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Kannin revealed that Aboagye contacted her early that morning to coordinate transport for their mutual acquaintance, former Minister Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, who was also among the victims.

“I was coordinating the event, and he first called around 6:45 a.m. to inform me that our godfather, Alhaji Muniru, was flying to Obuasi and I should pick him up at the airstrip. I told my driver to prepare the car to go and meet him,” she recounted.

Shortly after, she received a call from Alhaji himself, confirming that Aboagye had spoken to her. She assured him preparations were underway and believed they had not yet departed from Accra.

The MCE explained that a series of location changes followed as the morning unfolded, reportedly due to bad weather affecting the helicopter’s ability to land.

“Around 8 a.m., Aboagye called again, asking that the driver meet them at Ofori Stadium. Then he changed the plan back to the airstrip. Later, at about 9 a.m., he instructed the driver to head to the Black Park, near the event grounds,” she said.

Madam Kannin said she was unaware Aboagye himself was aboard the helicopter, as all their discussions focused on Alhaji Muniru.

“After that last call, I tried reaching both of them, but neither picked up. That was the last time I heard from them,” she recalled solemnly.

The crash claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians: Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate; Dr Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manean Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Alhaji Muniru and Dr Murtala were buried on Sunday, August 10, in line with Islamic rites, with an inter-denominational state burial for all victims scheduled for August 15.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that investigations are underway, with support from international experts, to determine the cause of the crash.

Nalerigu health workers treat patients in cramped ward after ¢4.5m Covid Centre stalls https://www.adomonline.com/nalerigu-health-workers-treat-patients-in-cramped-ward-after-%c2%a24-5m-covid-centre-stalls/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 09:40:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566585 Health authorities at Nalerigu’s Baptist Medical Centre are compelled to treat patients with various infectious diseases in a single makeshift ward because the contractor who was paid ¢4.5 million for the COVID-19 centre abandoned the site.

Imagine being in a ward with other patients suffering from different infectious diseases. You have mpox, someone has cholera, and the next person on the bed closest to you has TB. Just a series of repeated coughs, and you are likely to go home with another hospital-acquired infection.

This is the daily reality of patients at the Nalerigu Baptist Medical Centre, where health care providers have to treat patients in a makeshift ward.

In 2020, the government awarded Makro Structures Limited a contract worth GH¢15 million, of which GH¢4.5 million was paid upfront, to design and construct a COVID-19 treatment centre for the area.
However, the contractor has since abandoned the site.

JOYNEWS has been tracking the progress of various infectious disease centres.

When Nalerigu recorded its first suspected case of Mpox this year, health authorities at the Baptist Medical Centre had no choice but to treat the patient in its makeshift ward, which had been set aside for infectious diseases.

It’s a typical small room, partitioned to separate patients with different infectious diseases. According to the Medical Director, Dr. Isabella Amese, the ward was originally designated for tuberculosis treatment.

However, as a wider range of cases emerged over time, the team was forced to improvise.

The contractor was paid GH¢4.5 million to complete the facility by October 2022, but only executed 10 per cent of the civil works before abandoning the site.

When JOYNEWS visited, the project was still at the foundation level, with no contractor present. The site had been overtaken by overgrown weeds and stagnant water.

The Auditor-General, in a special report on COVID-19 expenditure between March 2020 and 2022, stated that several efforts by the Ministry of Health to get the contractor to return to the site have proved fruitless.

This is because the contractor did not sign any performance bond. Assembly Member for the Zaari Fong Electoral Area, Bukari Fuseini, says he is appalled by the contractor’s output and is calling on the government to intervene.

The Auditor-General has recommended that the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health recover the mobilisation amount, terminate the contract, and re-award it. Failure to do so would require the Director to refund the amount.

Efforts to get the Health Ministry to comment on the matter have proved futile.

Also at Goaso, in the Ahafo Region, the infectious disease centre is partially completed. A tour of the facility revealed that signage is yet to be installed, sensor control panels are not in place, and minor roof repairs remain outstanding.

Although hospital authorities have taken stock of much of the required equipment, an X-ray machine, a deep freezer, and a stove are yet to be supplied by the contractor. The centre is currently not functional.

When the team inspected the Zebilla Infectious Disease Centre in the Upper East Region, the facility had been completed.

However, due to the absence of any major infectious disease outbreak, hospital management had repurposed the facility by converting sections into neonatal and antenatal units.

A space has, however, been designated specifically for infectious diseases if there is an outbreak in future, confirms Ayobi Abdul Rahman, the Medical Superintendent of Bawku West Hospital.

However, the hospital was not supplied with ventilators or X-ray machines, which are critical equipment for any infectious disease centre.

“The project received support from the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition as part of its objective to build evidence for increased accountability in Ghana through a multi-stakeholder accountability initiative.

“Any financial assistance or support provided to the journalist has no editorial influence. The content of this article belongs solely to the author and is not endorsed by or associated with any entity or any other affiliates,” Ayobi Abdul Rahman added.

According to the Police, the video, widely circulated on social media, contains explicit threats delivered in the Twi language. Authorities are continuing efforts to trace and arrest other individuals believed to be linked to the recording.

The incident has raised public concern over the use of social media platforms to incite violence and make threats against high-profile figures.

The police have urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without interference, assuring that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the safety of the president, his family, and the general public.

Findings from the ongoing probe are expected to be disclosed in the coming days.

Sam George alleges covert moves by MultiChoice Ghana to evade 30% DSTv price cut https://www.adomonline.com/sam-george-alleges-covert-moves-by-multichoice-ghana-to-evade-30-dstv-price-cut/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 19:07:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566456 Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations Samuel George has revealed that MultiChoice Ghana, the operators of DStv, is involved in intense behind-the-scenes lobbying to pressure him into reversing his directive for a significant price reduction.

The minister’s firm stance threatens the company’s broadcasting license, which could be revoked if they fail to comply with the government’s demand.

The ultimatum, which requires DStv, with its headquarters in South Africa, to reduce its subscription rates by 30 per cent, was initially set for August 7 but was later extended to September 6, 2025.

The directive follows widespread public outcry and a government investigation into DStv’s pricing model, which the minister has repeatedly described as unfair to Ghanaian consumers.

Speaking on the Joy FM Super Morning Show, Mr. George disclosed that since his public warning, several intermediaries believed to be connected to DStv have approached members of government, attempting to soften his position.

He revealed attempts by MultiChoice to rope in the South African government to turn the matter into a foreign affairs issue.

The minister, however, remains unwavering, insisting that the government’s primary responsibility is to protect the interests of its citizens.

“Look, all the places they are walking around, getting the foreign minister of South Africa to call the Ghanaian foreign minister to call me. It’s not going to work…. Look, making it a foreign affairs issue and saying what? There are South African businesses. The biggest South African business in Ghana is MTN. Has MTN complained about this? When I dealt with MTN, MTN worked with me on everything,” he stated.

He continued, “When I made the case to MTN, I wanted more data for the Ghanaian people. They said, ‘Well, we have a challenge with the network. We want more spectrum. I yielded. I went to the cabinet and got cabinet approval and gave them more spectrum.”

The minister offered advice to businesses operating in Ghana.

“So, you work with your regulator in the interest of your customers and in the interest of your business. You don’t place your business interest as the only interest you have and ignore completely the consumer interest.”

The minister cited stark price disparities, noting that Ghanaians pay significantly more for the same premium packages offered in other African markets like Nigeria, even when accounting for currency fluctuations.

The minister painted a picture of a company unwilling to engage in good faith, citing several instances of what he termed “disrespect.”

He revealed that after he presented his case, MultiChoice responded not with a counter-offer but with a nine-page letter filled with economic forecasts.

“They wrote me a nine-page letter with six graphs and bar charts explaining to me the instability of Ghana’s economy and how our cedi appreciation cannot be trusted to be sustainable,” he recounted with disbelief.

Beyond pricing, Mr. George highlighted critical operational failures, chief among them being cross-border piracy.

He claimed that a staggering “40 to 45% of DStv devices in Ghana today are all devices from Nigeria”, a situation he says MultiChoice has failed to tackle.

This influx of Nigerian-registered devices, he argued, allows MultiChoice to collect revenue while the Ghanaian state loses out on tax, and it artificially suppresses Ghana’s official subscriber numbers, which the company then uses to justify its high prices.

“When you say you have a low subscription in Ghana, it’s because your prices are not uniform and have led to cross-border piracy on your platform,” he charged.

The minister cited regional precedents where regulators took a hard line, forcing MultiChoice to adjust its practices.

“In Malawi, in 2023, they just shut them down. MultiChoice went to court, lost the case, and four months later came back, offered one week free, and dropped the prices. In Liberia they slashed the premium package by $30. In Nigeria in 2024, the Nigerian House of Reps passed an instruction prohibiting the increases,” he detailed.

Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Kevor recounted Dr. Omane Boamah’s generosity, discipline, and unwavering loyalty to the party and President John Mahama.

“He supported me in kind and cash. At one point, he sold his car to raise resources for my campaign. I became regional chairman, and we went on to support the national elections,” Dr. Kevor revealed.

He also shared that Dr. Omane Boamah sought his counsel before accepting the role of NDC Director of Elections and IT, discussing the decision with him and colleague Gyeke Darko.

Following the party’s defeat in the 2020 general elections—blamed by some on Dr. Omane Boamah—he had considered stepping away from frontline politics. But Dr. Kevor and others persuaded him to stay, emphasizing his loyalty to President Mahama and the importance of redeeming the party’s fortunes.

“We believed that with his loyalty to President Mahama, it would only be fair for him to stay close and help Mahama win the next election, to redeem himself and change the narrative,” Dr. Kevor said.

He also highlighted that Dr. Omane Boamah’s discipline was a vital quality the party lacked in 2020, contributing to its loss.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah was among eight people who died in the tragic August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

Wontumi Multimedia appeals NCA suspension, claims full compliance https://www.adomonline.com/wontumi-multimedia-appeals-nca-suspension-claims-full-compliance/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 15:57:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566344 Wontumi Multimedia has appealed to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to lift the suspension of its broadcasting operations, insisting it has met all regulatory requirements.

In a letter dated August 12, 2025, addressed to the Acting Director of the NCA, Edmund Y. Fianko, General Manager Chris Joe Quaicoe stated that the station had fulfilled all conditions outlined in the regulator’s June 12 directive.

The station said it had applied for authorisation to operate a Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL), obtained a fire safety certificate, secured an Environmental Protection Agency permit for its mast, paid outstanding regulatory and spectrum fees amounting to GH₵22,330, and invited the NCA for a follow-up inspection.

Wontumi Multimedia urged the authority to review its compliance status and reinstate its licence, adding that the matter is also being pursued through legal channels.

Earlier on August 12, 2025, the NCA ordered the suspension of three radio stations owned by Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited for violating broadcasting regulations. The authority cited failure to address critical breaches, including the unauthorised use of STL frequencies and unapproved transmitter locations, as reasons for the suspension.

In a statement issued on August 12, 2025, the NCA disclosed that the affected stations, operating on 95.9 MHz in Accra, 101.3 MHz in Kumasi, and 101.3 MHz in Takoradi, were shut down for operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance. This action breaches Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991).

The suspensions follow the expiration of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama for defaulting stations to rectify their infractions.

While some stations took corrective steps, Wontumi Multimedia’s outlets allegedly failed to address critical breaches, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and unapproved transmitter locations.

The NCA affirmed it will continue to monitor the broadcasting sector to ensure full compliance and protect the integrity of Ghana’s airwaves.

In addition, six other media stations—Domplus Multimedia in Ho, Dreams Ghana Media Limited in New Aberim, Jam Multimedia in Kintampo, Jewel Group Limited in Duayaw Nkwanta, Kpandai Star Community Radio in Kpandai, and Unique Gateway Communication Limited in Nkawkaw—also failed to comply with the regulatory amnesty by taking no action to remedy violations of FM broadcasting laws.

Deputy Interior Minister wades into controversy over police helicopters [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/deputy-interior-minister-wades-into-controversy-over-police-helicopters-audio/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 11:42:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566230 Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi has urged restraint in the ongoing public debate over the Ghana Police Service’s helicopters, following concerns raised after last Wednesday’s fatal military helicopter crash.

Mr. Terlabi said it was premature to draw conclusions or politicise the matter while the nation mourns the loss of eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam, the Lower Manya Krobo MP acknowledged that the state of the police helicopters had not been brought to his attention.

“It hasn’t come to my attention, but I will plead with Ghanaians, including my party members, that whether an old helicopter was bought or not, considering the tragedy we are mourning, our commentaries should be measured,” he stated.

He cautioned that speculative remarks could “impugn the integrity of the leaders who were onboard the helicopter that crashed” and stressed the need to await the outcome of investigations before passing judgment.

Mr. Terlabi explained that the choice of such aircraft is usually based on recommendations from the Police Service or the Ghana Armed Forces.

His appeal comes after Ernest Henry Norgbey, a member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, described the three police helicopters procured by the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration as “flying coffins” and unfit for use.

The Ashaiman MP alleged the aircraft were manufactured in 1976 and have remained grounded since delivery, although they were displayed during the 2023 Independence Day celebration.

Mr. Norgbey’s claims have intensified public concerns over why the helicopters were not deployed for search and rescue operations after the crash.

However, Mr. Terlabi maintained that the focus for now should be on mourning the victims and supporting investigations rather than inflaming political tensions.

I almost shut down Ghana’s internet over horrific helicopter crash videos – Communications Minister https://www.adomonline.com/i-almost-shut-down-ghanas-internet-over-horrific-helicopter-crash-videos-communications-minister/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 10:51:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566201 Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, has revealed that he almost ordered a nationwide internet shutdown to halt the circulation of disturbing videos following the August 6 helicopter crash.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr George described the period as a “mixed experience” and praised the swift cooperation of telecom companies in responding to the crisis.

“When it comes to the coverage of the tragedy, I’d say it’s been mixed for me, and let me say a very big thank you to the telecom companies – MTN, Telecel, and AirtelTigo Ghana,” he said.

He explained that his concern grew as graphic videos began flooding social media, especially WhatsApp, which is beyond the control of any government.

“When the incident happened, I was distraught, but we still had a responsibility to the state. I got a call with the videos that started circulating. Most of them were on WhatsApp, a platform not controlled by any country — it’s a private business,” he explained.

Faced with the situation, the Minister said he considered two difficult options.

“One was to shut down the internet in the country to prevent further spread of the videos, because government had not officially completed communication to the families. I was worried about the mental health of the victims’ children and spouses, and such tragedy needs to be broken in a certain way,” he said.

However, he noted that shutting down the internet would have had wider consequences.

“That was one option — to shut down, make a public announcement and say we’re turning off the internet for a period to allow for calm. But that also came with its own consequences. Many of you stream the news, and cutting access could create a ripple effect worse than what we were trying to fix. So, we left it intact.”

Instead, Mr George opted for a coordinated, behind-the-scenes effort involving both local and international stakeholders.

“I immediately reached out to Meta and activated a POC we had there to see what they could do, since they control WhatsApp. I also made personal calls to senior vice presidents I knew at Meta. They assured me they would look into the matter.”

His focus then shifted to local operators, who responded swiftly.

“I reached out to the NCA and asked them to contact all the CEOs. I personally called the three CEOs and said they should work with the NCA. We sent out about 30 million text messages within two hours, and the telecom companies bore the cost,” he said.

Mr George stressed that all restraint messages sent from the Ministry were fully funded by the telecom operators.

“All those messages asking people to exercise restraint were paid for by the telecom companies themselves as part of working with us. The NCA coordinated the nationwide blast,” he concluded.

Helicopter crash: Heads must roll – Aircraft Engineer https://www.adomonline.com/helicopter-crash-heads-must-roll-aircraft-engineer/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 09:45:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566163 An aircraft engineer has called for the immediate dismissal of anyone found responsible for lapses in the servicing of the Z-9 helicopter that crashed last Wednesday, killing eight people — three military officers and five civilians.

Dr Robert Nesta Otoo, a British Army aircraft engineer, explained that before any aircraft takes off, it undergoes a series of rigorous servicing procedures.

“Before an aircraft takes off, there are people who carry out service work on it,” he said.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, he outlined that after servicing, ground testing must be conducted to ensure every component is functioning properly. Following certification, the aircraft then undergoes air testing before being cleared for flight.

“After all these tests are done and found satisfactory, the aircraft is made ready to fly,” Dr. Otoo added.

He urged authorities to review the service log from the day of the incident to identify those assigned to work on the helicopter before its departure.

“I am calling on authorities to open the service book on the day of the incident to see those who were assigned to work on the plane before take-off, to ascertain which work was not done diligently enough, leading to the disaster that befell the entire nation,” he said.

Dr. Otoo stressed that if any negligence is established, those involved should be dismissed and sanctioned.

He also rejected claims that Ghana’s aircraft are too old, arguing that poor maintenance — not age — is the primary cause of deterioration.

“These machines are built to last longer. They only need servicing to keep them fit for purpose. This is why I’m calling for an investigation, and whoever didn’t do due diligence should be sacked,” he emphasised.

The British Army engineer further appealed for transparency in the ongoing probe. “Investigators should publish the outcome of the aircraft examination,” he added.

Z-9 helicopter crash wasn’t pilot error – Aircraft Engineer [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/z-9-helicopter-crash-wasnt-pilot-error-aircraft-engineer-video/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 09:40:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566136 British Army aircraft engineer, Dr Robert Nesta Otoo, has rejected suggestions that the Z-9 helicopter crash last Wednesday was caused by bad weather.

The crash, which occurred en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight people, including two ministers of state.

Speaking on Burning Issues on Adom FM, Dr. Otoo stressed that Ghana’s weather conditions are generally favorable for flying and that the pilot in question was highly experienced.

“Pilots are trained to the highest degree, and for one to be assigned such high-profile passengers means he is not inexperienced. I don’t believe this was a case of bad weather,” he said.

According to him, the incident could have been the result of mechanical failure or even sabotage.

He noted that aircraft undergo thorough pre-flight checks, but a lapse in servicing or deliberate interference could have caused the crash.

“The moment I heard about the incident, I told myself this was sabotage. Before carrying important personalities, an aircraft must be checked to the highest level of precision. An aircraft cannot just go down easily like that,” Dr. Otoo stated.

He added that the total loss of an aircraft’s power in flight is rare and should not automatically be attributed to pilot error.

The North Tongu MP described Dr. Omane Boamah as a visionary leader whose integrity and determination could have significantly reshaped the fight against galamsey.

“We have truly lost people with immense potential, people who could have altered the destiny of our country. I have no doubt whatsoever that Dr. Omane Boamah would have solved this galamsey crisis,” he stated in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV.

Recalling private conversations, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that the late minister had made it clear he would deploy the military against illegal miners without yielding to political influence.

“He told me, ‘The military will be deployed; I’m deploying them. I get calls; sometimes he would even show me who is calling. It could be national or regional executives, but I’m not listening to them.

‘I will not engage in pretence. What we do behind closed doors must match what we say publicly. These troops are in harm’s way, risking their lives, and you expect us to cut political deals? No, I won’t be part of that,’” he recounted.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, Dr. Omane Boamah had shared this uncompromising position directly with then-President John Dramani Mahama, who assured him of his full backing.

“President Mahama told him, ‘You have my full blessings; go ahead,’” he disclosed.

Dr. Omane Boamah was among eight prominent Ghanaians who died in the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.

‘It could have been me’ – Former Defence Minister mourns helicopter crash victims https://www.adomonline.com/it-could-have-been-me-former-defence-minister-mourns-helicopter-crash-victims/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 20:22:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566011 Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has shared his grief over the recent helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, a tragedy he described as an unprecedented loss for Ghana.

Speaking at the Evening of Reflections and Memorial at the Forecourt of the State House on Saturday, August 9, Mr Nitiwul revealed the immense sorrow felt by the nation and called for a moment of prayer for the victims.

The former minister’s remarks came during a period of national mourning following the August 6 crash, which killed Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

The others who perished were Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the NDC.

Tragically, the military crew members, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, also lost their lives in the crash.

The deceased persons were on their way to the launch of the Responsible Co-operative Mining and Skills Development Programme (COMSDEP) in Obuasi to address illegal mining.

“It’s a very sad situation for all of us,” Nitiwul stated, extending his condolences to the bereaved families, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the entire nation.

He emphasised the difficulty of accepting such a tragic event but underscored a sense of faith.

“The only one who can give and take is the Almighty, and we know that all of them are in the bosom of the Lord.”

Mr Nitiwul highlighted the unique nature of this disaster, noting that while Ghana has experienced other air accidents, the loss of eight lives in this manner, particularly while in the service of the nation, is a “big loss to all of us”.

The emotion in his voice was palpable as he shared a personal connection to the tragedy.

“It directly affects me because I was a minister for 8 years. It could have been me. I mean, it’s possible it could have been me.”

He urged Ghanaians to find solace in prayer, stating, “We cannot ask him why. We can only pray for their souls and that’s all they need now. So I’m asking every Ghanaian to stand for just a minute and say a prayer for them.”

He said these prayers are what will “feed into their souls and ask God to forgive all their sins, their trespasses and take them into his bosom.”

Nitiwul also used the tragedy as a powerful call for national unity, observing that the memorial service had brought together people from all political backgrounds.

“It’s not about a political party. This you see NDC, NPP, and we all mixed together. It is about Ghana today.” He expressed hope that this shared grief would serve as a “clarion call to unite us”.

His final words were a sombre reflection on the lives cut short, some of whom were “very young within their prime” and at the “epitome of their political career.”

He concluded with a message of empathy for the families: “Can you imagine? And we’ve all had it. He was a former interior minister, former minister for communication and all that; you can see that sometimes you just wake up, and even your children have not seen you and you are going to return later and you don’t come back. It is very painful, extremely painful.”

Crew escape unhurt in another helicopter emergency landing in Adansi https://www.adomonline.com/crew-escape-unhurt-in-another-helicopter-emergency-landing-in-adansi/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 13:10:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565813 Another helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing at Mensonso, near Obuasi in the Adansi District of the Ashanti Region.

The Member of Parliament for Adansi Akrofuom, Joseph Azumah, confirmed the incident during an interview on Adom FM’s Kasiebo is Tasty.

Mr. Azumah said the event likely occurred around 11 a.m., explaining that he missed several calls from his constituency’s Women’s Organiser about the situation.

According to the MP, the aircraft was travelling from Accra to Chiraa in the Sunyani West District of the Bono Region. The pilot diverted due to poor weather conditions, as continuing the trip would have posed serious risks.

The emergency landing took place near Adansi Brofoyedur, the same area where eight people recently lost their lives in a helicopter crash.

With soldiers still stationed at the earlier crash site, Mr. Azumah said they quickly moved to Mensonso to assess the situation.

While the exact number of people on board remains unconfirmed, preliminary reports indicate there were no casualties.

This incident follows a similar emergency landing involving the same helicopter at Ajumako Kokoben on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The aircraft was en route to Prestea in the Western Region when the pilot was forced to divert and land at the Ajumako Kokoben Community School park around 10:30 a.m. due to bad weather.

Last Wednesday’s incident reportedly occurred about an hour before the tragic military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, which claimed eight lives, including two ministers.

Following the latest event, Adom News’ Akwasi Dwamena reported that the aircraft belongs to Volta River Aviation.

The helicopter, which was traveling from Accra to Kumasi, was forced to land due to harsh weather conditions that severely reduced visibility.

An eyewitness, Bakira Tahiru, headmaster of New Generation School, told Adom News that the aircraft passed by the school and returned in less than three minutes, attempting to land there.

However, to ensure the safety of the students, the helicopter moved a short distance away behind the school before landing.

Mr. Tahiru disclosed that there were four people onboard, including two white men, and all escaped unhurt.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the emergency landing.

A press release said the two officers, both stationed at the Anyaa District Police Command, together with four Community Police Assistants (CPAs), were honoured by the IGP and the Police Management Board at the Police Headquarters on August 8, 2025.

The officers’ diligence, dedication, and vigilance during a snap check operation at Ablekuma Borkorborkor in the Greater Accra Region on August 7, 2025, led to the rescue of two robbery victims and the arrest of suspects.

At about 12:30 a.m., while conducting routine vehicle checks, the officers stopped a green pickup truck carrying three passengers in its open bucket.

The release said two of the passengers jumped down and called for help, telling the officers they had been attacked the previous night during a robbery involving their 5,400-litre fuel tanker near Nsawam.

The officers immediately rescued the victims and arrested one suspect, while the others fled.

Subsequent operations in the Eastern Region led to the arrest of six additional suspects and the recovery of the stolen fuel tanker along with other exhibits.

The IGP commended the officers and CPAs for their exemplary performance and urged all personnel to emulate their professionalism, vigilance, and commitment to duty.

He reaffirmed the Police Administration’s commitment to recognising and rewarding officers who distinguish themselves in the line of duty.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Glover recalled that as a deputy ranking member on the Trade, Industry, and Tourism Committee, he and four other MPs were travelling from Tamale aboard an Antrak Air flight when disaster struck.

“About 20 minutes after take-off, the pilot announced there was an emergency and we were returning to the airport. From my seat, I could see the wing burning. Kill ‘galamsey’ before it kills your members – Dr. Aidoo warns Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/kill-galamsey-before-it-kills-your-members-dr-aidoo-warns-mahama/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 07:21:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565605 Ghana’s former ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr. Tony Aidoo, has urged President John Mahama to urgently end the galamsey menace before it claims more members of his cabinet.

Speaking on Newsfile on Saturday, August 9, Dr. Aidoo linked last Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash — which killed eight people, including two cabinet ministers — directly to the government’s fight against illegal mining.

“To be frank, I had a personal connection with only three of the unfortunate victims of the helicopter crash — Dr. Omane Boamah, Dr. Sarpong, and Dr. Murtala Mohammed,” he said. “Anytime I remember the departed, it is usually with teary eyes, but I am not here to eulogise nor to pay another apologetic tribute. This will be a very tiny voice among the worldwide tributes following the avoidable national tragedy.”

The former Senior Presidential Aide stressed that the deaths were not an act of God but the result of human failings.

“Even though faith says we must eulogise the dead, we must look behind and look for the cause — why did they die? People will say, ‘Oh, the Lord gave us and the Lord takes.’ I say that God did not take. It was we who gave by our mistake of an avoidable death.”

The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and three crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

“Why were they in the air? They were in the air because they were going to fight galamsey,” Dr. Aidoo said. “President Mahama must kill the galamsey menace before it ends his members [of cabinet].”

He emphasised that the most fitting tribute to the victims would be to act immediately.

“God gives, yes, but God does not take innocent lives. People die by their own destruction or by lifestyle. What is President Mahama waiting for? Yesterday, I heard Kwame Mpianim say we must ban galamsey for three months.

“In fact, my first reaction after the Chief of Staff gave us the details and confirmed the death was to send the message directly to President Mahama, and I said these eight patriotic souls lost their lives in the fight against galamsey.

“So for God’s sake, Mr. President, don’t let them die in vain. Stop the galamsey now. That’s the best tribute we can pay to these patriotic deaths.”

“To be frank, I had a personal connection with only three of the unfortunate victims… Anytime I remember the departed… usually with teary eyes, but I am not here to eulogise nor to pay another apologetic tribute. Mine will be a very tiny voice among the worldwide tributes, lamentations and eulogies that have come following the avoidable, I say avoidable, national tragedy.”

He questioned the necessity of the trip that led to their deaths.

“Why were they in the air? They were in the air because they were going to fight galamsey,” he said. “President Mahama must kill the galamsey menace before it ends his members [of cabinet].”

Rejecting the view that the tragedy was an act of God, Dr. Aidoo stated:

“People will say, ‘oh the Lord gave us and the Lord takes,’ I say that God did not take; it was we who gave… by our mistake of an avoidable death. God gives, yes, but God does not take innocent lives. People die by their own destruction or by lifestyle.”

He revealed that his first reaction after confirmation of the deaths was to send a message to President Mahama:

“These eight patriotic souls lost their lives in the fight against galamsey. So for God’s sake, Mr. President, don’t let them die in vain. Stop the galamsey now. That’s the best tribute we can say to these patriotic deaths.”

Mahama confirms receipt of forensic reports on helicopter crash victims https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-confirms-receipt-of-forensic-reports-on-helicopter-crash-victims/ Sun, 10 Aug 2025 17:39:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565569 President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that forensic reports for all eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region have been received.

Speaking at the burial of two of the victims — Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and MP for Tamale Central, and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator — President Mahama disclosed that the reports had been sent electronically, paving the way for their interment.

DNA samples were sent to South Africa for analysis due to the badly charred state of the bodies.

“Happily, that process ended yesterday [August 9]. We received the forensic results for our brothers, Murtala and Alhaji Muniru, and that is why we are here to bury them today. As I speak, the forensic reports for the rest have also arrived. In consultation with the families, we will decide on their funerals. But as we have said, on August 15, we will hold a state funeral for all of them,” the President said on Sunday, August 10.

In line with Islamic tradition, Janazah prayers were performed for the two at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra, led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, before burial at the Military Cemetery near Burma Camp.

The government declared a three-day national mourning period, which included a flower-laying ceremony on August 7 and a memorial service on August 9. The state funeral will take place on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

The Z-9 military helicopter departed Accra at 9:12 a.m. local time, bound for Obuasi for an anti-illegal mining operation. The aircraft, carrying three crew members and five passengers, went “off the radar,” prompting a search-and-rescue mission that confirmed all eight aboard had died.

Bawumia reflects Atta Mills’ Asomdwehene traits – Ghanaians hail https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-reflects-atta-mills-asomdwehene-traits-ghanaians-hail/ Sun, 10 Aug 2025 13:13:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565493 Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been praised by a section of Ghanaians for exhibiting traits reminiscent of the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills, affectionately called Asomdwehene (King of Peace).

On Saturday, August 9, Dr Bawumia visited President John Dramani Mahama to console him over the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people.

The gesture has been widely described as an act of unity and statesmanship, echoing the calm, non-divisive leadership style for which Atta Mills was revered until his passing in office.

Many citizens, political commentators and civil society actors have commended Dr Bawumia for maintaining a temperate and considerate political posture even in the face of partisan divides.

Professor Atta Mills was celebrated for avoiding inflammatory rhetoric, focusing instead on consensus-building and peaceful governance. According to admirers, Dr Bawumia’s decision to stand with President Mahama during a moment of national grief reflects a rare maturity in contemporary politics, where ideological differences often overshadow compassion and solidarity.

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, in a heartfelt social media post, described both President Mahama and Dr Bawumia as “amongst the finest politicians in the whole world” and commended them for providing “shining examples” during dark times.

He noted that while leaders in other parts of the world are trapped in “pointless tussles” that polarise their nations, Ghana is blessed to have two statesmen who can rise above political rivalry to unify the country when it matters most.

Mr Bentil expressed gratitude to God for giving the nation “temperate, considerate, calm-mannered, yet capable men to lead us,” urging Ghanaians not to take such leadership for granted.

The public admiration for Dr Bawumia’s gesture underscores a wider yearning for politics anchored in mutual respect, peace and pragmatic problem-solving.

For many, such moments are a reminder that progress is not achieved by “slashing and condemning” opponents, but by steadily building consensus and advancing together as a united people.

I was meant to be on board – Asiedu Nketia breaks silence on helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-meant-to-be-on-board-asiedu-nketia-breaks-silence-on-helicopter-crash/ Sat, 09 Aug 2025 05:56:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565212 National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has revealed that he was originally meant to be aboard the military helicopter that crashed and killed eight people.

However, due to a last-minute change of plans, he delegated his Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, to replace him.

General Mosquito, as he is popularly known, revealed this while addressing a gathering as the nation continues to mourn the deceased.

“Allah does what he wants. I was supposed to be on the flight, but I asked my vice chairman, Dr. Sarpong, to represent the party, and he agreed,” he recounted.

Reflecting on the tragedy, he urged people to trust in divine will, noting that no one can predict or alter fate.

“In human reasoning, you might think that if I hadn’t sent Sarpong, he would still be alive. But who knows? If it was his time, something else could have happened, even in Accra. We don’t question what Allah has ordained; in all things, we give thanks,” he said.

He added that perhaps the disaster prevented an even worse outcome, offering a perspective that has comforted some of those grieving.

This disclosure adds to the growing list of people, including President John Mahama and Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, who had initially been expected to participate in the event.

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, in the Adansi District of the Ashanti Region.

The occupants were killed after the military Z-9 helicopter caught fire and burned beyond recognition.

The victims included Defence Minister Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah; Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong; NADMO Deputy Director-General Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the crash to determine its cause.

In a statement on Friday, August 8, the Committee commended the Ghana Armed Forces for swiftly initiating a multi-agency probe into the tragedy, which occurred in the Adansi-Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

“We commit to thoroughly reviewing the findings once available and providing our recommendations to strengthen aviation safety, operational protocols, and crisis response across our security sector,” the Committee said.

The crash claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah; Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong; NADMO Deputy Director-General Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

I spoke out of pain; I’m sorry – Akpaloo apologises over helicopter crash comment https://www.adomonline.com/i-spoke-out-of-pain-im-sorry-akpaloo-apologises-over-helicopter-crash-comment/ Fri, 08 Aug 2025 16:58:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565148 Founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Kofi Akpaloo, has issued a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians and the bereaved families of the eight victims of the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen after facing public criticism over his earlier remarks, Mr. Akpaloo admitted his comments were ill-timed and hurtful, explaining they were made in a moment of deep emotional distress.

“I am not happy at all, and I feel terrible that my comments caused pain to many people and families. I am sincerely sorry and ask for their forgiveness,” he said.

He revealed that the tragedy struck him personally, as one of the victims, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, was a close associate.

“My brother Omane Boamah is not someone I can betray. I was devastated when I heard of his passing. My reaction came from the pain of knowing that people are dying almost every day in this country, and we seem to have normalised it.

“We have lost many through road accidents, and yet we don’t value lives enough. That frustration and sorrow are what came out in my words,” Mr. Akpaloo clarified.

The crash claimed the lives of Dr. Boamah and seven others, including Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Also among the deceased were Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and three Air Force personnel: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The Z-9 helicopter was en route to Obuasi when it lost radar contact, prompting a swift military search. Investigations are ongoing following the recovery of the aircraft’s black box.

The remains of the victims have been transported to South Africa for forensic DNA analysis.

Helicopter crash: Why gov’t may have chosen South Africa for forensic examination – Expert [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/helicopter-crash-why-govt-may-have-chosen-south-africa-for-forensic-examination-expert-audio/ Fri, 08 Aug 2025 15:31:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565097 Head of the Forensics Department at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Richmond Afoakwa, says Ghana has the capacity to conduct DNA testing locally.

However, he believes the government may have had its own reasons for sending samples from the recent military helicopter crash to South Africa.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Afoakwa noted that both the Ghana Police Service and the Fire Service are equipped with the necessary tools and trained personnel for such forensic examinations.

According to him, several private laboratories in the country also have the capacity to handle DNA testing.

“During the COVID-19 period, DNA testing was done locally, and those facilities are still available. In fact, the same equipment used in South Africa is available here in Ghana,” he said.

While acknowledging the country’s capacity, Dr. Afoakwa said the decision to outsource the testing may have been influenced by factors such as expediency and public perception.

“Listening to the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, it appears the decision may be linked to how quickly the results are needed or the trust some Ghanaians place in work done abroad,” he added.

He stressed that under normal circumstances, DNA results could be produced within 24 hours in Ghana, especially when both antemortem and reference samples are readily available.

However, he noted that the condition of the remains—such as severe burning—can make DNA extraction more difficult.

Dr. Afoakwa further pointed out that cultural and religious considerations, particularly for Muslim victims, make timely identification critical.

He concluded by extending condolences to the bereaved families, the government, and the entire nation, describing the incident as a tragic loss for all Ghanaians.

Samples of the remains of the eight individuals who died in Wednesday’s helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region were flown to South Africa for DNA testing to assist in their identification.

The deceased include two cabinet ministers: Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

Also on board were Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Three Ghana Air Force personnel — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — also perished during the official mission to Obuasi.

Rev. Wengam breaks silence on events that saved Mahama from helicopter crash https://www.adomonline.com/rev-wengam-breaks-silence-on-events-that-saved-mahama-from-helicopter-crash/ Fri, 08 Aug 2025 07:01:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2564914 The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Ghana, Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam, has shared a dramatic account of how President John Mahama narrowly avoided being on board the military helicopter that crashed on Wednesday, claiming the lives of top government and military officials.

According to Rev. Wengam, many people have since called and messaged him, thanking the church for “saving the President’s life.”

He, however, downplayed the praise, explaining that nothing extraordinary was done except responding to a strong conviction to act.

He recounted that about a week before the incident, he received a call from the President’s Secretary, Dr. Callistus Mahama, informing him that the President would not be able to attend a planned church programme because he had been invited to Côte d’Ivoire as a special guest for their Independence Day celebration.

Vice President, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and First Lady Lordina Mahama were to attend the church event instead.

Rev. Wengam said the news left him uneasy. “I called Reverend Bawa and told him I didn’t accept the change in plan. I asked him to gather the prayer team and pray about it. I was very clear about that,” he recalled.

On Monday, matters became tense. He said the First Lady called him, sounding upset, insisting that the President should attend the programme as planned.

“She was firm she told me not to accept his absence. We went back and forth on the phone. It was almost a battle of wills,” he said.

While still on the line with the First Lady, the President himself tried calling him. “I told her I would hang up and speak with him.

The President explained his reasons, and I told him, ‘Your Excellency, I understand your will be done,” Rev. Wengam recounted.

Later, while leading a prayer session, he missed another call from the First Lady.

She followed up with a text message confirming that they would attend the programme on Wednesday and that the President could travel to Côte d’Ivoire the following day instead.

Reflecting on the twist of events, Rev. Wengam said, “If the President had come on the original date, he would have travelled the day before the crash. This change in schedule spared him.”

He concluded with a message to pastors, stressing the importance of constant prayer. “Being prophetic comes from a life of deep prayer—not praying only when you have a sermon to preach, but making it a daily commitment,” he urged.

Initially, the 37 Military Hospital in Accra was expected to handle the autopsies and identification. However, the severely burnt condition of the bodies made it necessary to rely on more advanced forensic methods, prompting the decision to send samples abroad.

A solemn reception was held at the Air Force Base in Accra on Thursday evening, August 7, as the remains arrived from the crash site. Chief of Staff Julius Debrah led a high-ranking government delegation to receive the coffins, which were draped in the national flag and transported under tight military escort.

The ceremony featured prayers, a moment of silence, and emotional scenes involving grieving families, senior military officials, and state representatives, capturing the depth of national mourning.

In honour of the fallen, the government has declared three days of national mourning beginning Thursday, August 7. National flags are to be flown at half-mast, and all official state activities have been suspended.

Meanwhile, the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for an independent and transparent investigation into the cause of the crash, urging the government to ensure accountability and take steps to prevent future tragedies.
