Mr Mikati, 58, was found dead in a pool of blood at his home.

A police crime scene team collected forensic evidence, revealing that the attackers fled with his Samsung phone, leaving behind two iPhones and a GCB ATM card bearing the name Paul Twumasi Ankrah.

Police later arrested Ankrah at Samsam Medie, who then implicated his accomplice, Asiedu Henning, also known as Nana Kofi Anum.

Henning was arrested on July 2 in Kutunse and led officers to recover a knife allegedly used in the attack.

Both suspects have been remanded by the Adabraka District Court 1 and are scheduled to reappear on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

Agradaa was jailed because of her personality – Lawyer https://www.adomonline.com/agradaa-was-jailed-because-of-her-personality-lawyer/ Fri, 04 Jul 2025 10:02:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551521 Richard Asare Baffour, legal counsel for former traditional priestess turned evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has strongly criticised the 15-year jail sentence handed to his client, describing it as unfair and influenced by public sentiment.

Nana Agradaa was sentenced by the Circuit Court in Accra on Thursday, July 3, after being found guilty of offences including charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence.

According to the court, she misled viewers during a televised broadcast in 2022 by claiming to possess spiritual powers capable of multiplying money. Several individuals, lured by her promises, reportedly gave her large sums of money with the expectation of receiving double in return—returns which never materialised.

Speaking on Citi FM, Mr Baffour Awuah argued that the ruling was excessively harsh and shaped more by Nana Agradaa’s controversial public image than the legal facts of the case.

“We are of the view that Nana Agradaa was punished not for her actions, but for her identity,” he said. “She has been vocal on social media, used provocative language, and clashed with many people. These factors, we believe, played a role in the final judgment.”

He described the verdict as a “miscarriage of justice” and alleged that bias had undermined the fairness of the trial.

Mr Baffour Awuah added that the legal team is reviewing the court’s decision and considering all legal avenues, including a possible appeal.

NPP desperate to avoid defeat in Ablekuma North re-run – Omane Boamah https://www.adomonline.com/npp-desperate-to-avoid-defeat-in-ablekuma-north-re-run-omane-boamah/ Fri, 04 Jul 2025 09:40:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551492 Ghana’s Defence Minister and outgoing NDC Director of IT and Elections, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of desperately trying to avoid another electoral loss in the Ablekuma North Constituency.

His remarks come in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to hold a re-run in 19 polling stations within the constituency—a development that has reignited political tensions.

In a Facebook post on Friday, July 4, Dr Boamah described the EC’s action as “long overdue” and raised concerns about its impact on Ghana’s democratic credibility. “We’re left questioning what this means for the future of our democracy,” he wrote.

He further claimed, “The NPP is struggling to avoid another defeat,” reflecting the NDC’s growing confidence in reclaiming the seat.

Dr Boamah also reiterated his party’s call for electoral reforms, urging stakeholders to “fix the broken Electoral Commission” and ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.

How Mr Asiamah intends to spend next 15 years during Agradaa’s jail term https://www.adomonline.com/how-mr-asiamah-intends-to-spend-next-15-years-during-agradaas-jail-term/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 20:23:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551313 The husband of jailed evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has opened up about how he intends to navigate life during her 15-year incarceration.

Contrary to widespread speculation that he might abandon her, Mr. Eric Oduro Asiamah has vowed to remain loyal and supportive throughout her sentence.

“In the next 15 years that she will be in jail, I will be visiting her up and down and continue from where she left off,” he stated, expressing his unwavering commitment to his wife during this difficult time.

Mr. Asiamah added that he will dedicate himself to running the church Agradaa worked hard to build, ensuring that its spiritual mission continues.

“The church will continue. I’m a personal pastor. My wife is a supervisor, and I oversee her. I’m also an associate pastor. So, I’m the father as well, and I will continue leading the church,” he said.

He described the current situation as a test of faith and resilience—one he believes he will overcome.

Reacting to public sentiments suggesting Agradaa deserved the sentence, Mr. Asiamah firmly disagreed, likening her ordeal to the biblical persecution of Jesus Christ, implying she is being unfairly targeted.

Despite the circumstances, he remains hopeful and believes something good will come out of the ordeal as he looks forward to reuniting with his wife in the future.

Amount involved is just GHS 540; sentence too excessive – Agradaa’s legal team claims https://www.adomonline.com/amount-involved-is-just-ghs-540-sentence-too-excessive-agradaas-legal-team-claims/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 16:53:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551288 The legal counsel for popular evangelist Patricia Asiedua, also known as Nana Agradaa, has sharply criticized the recent 15-year jail sentence handed down by the Accra Circuit Court.

Lawyer Asare Baffour described it as excessive, suggesting that the court’s decision was influenced more by public sentiment than the actual weight of the evidence presented during the trial.

The lawyer insisted that Agradaa’s conviction was driven by a need to pacify public anger following widespread media attention surrounding the case.

He questioned the basis for the sentence, arguing that the court acquitted and discharged Agradaa on some charges, such as confinement and conflict, due to lack of evidence.

“She was acquitted and discharged on conflict and confinement, saying no evidence was made during the trial. So if no evidence was made during the trial, what basis do you have in your defense? It is indicative of the fact that the court itself agreed with us that it had access to human defense in respect of conflict and confinement… If considerations were given to them, they would not have come to the conclusion that the court gave. We believe that the sentence of 15 years is just excessive.”

According to Lawyer Asare Baffour the amount involved in the fraudulent activities is just GHS 540, which does not warrant such a jail term and raises serious concerns about the consistency of the court’s reasoning.

“Even the amount involved is just GHS 540. How can you be alleged to have defrauded somebody for GHS 540 and then be convicted for 15 years? Fifteen years. I’m very clear in my mind that Agradaa has been jailed just because of who she is and not because of what she is alleged to have done.”

Agradaa’s legal team further disclosed that they would be filing an appeal as early as Monday, challenging what they described as a “premeditated” and overly harsh ruling.

They remain confident that justice will eventually be served in her favour.

Founder of Heaven Way Ministries International, Patricia Asiedua, widely known as Nana Agradaa, has finally broken her silence after being handed a 15-year jail sentence by an Accra Circuit Court.

The controversial self-styled evangelist was convicted on multiple counts of defrauding by false pretence and charlatanic advertisement.

She was found guilty of convincing members of her church to hand over large sums of money with the promise of spiritual rewards and financial breakthroughs.

While being escorted out of the courtroom after the verdict, Agradaa addressed a group of reporters in a brief but striking comment directed at her followers.

All she managed to say was for her followers to never cease praying.

Agradaa exhibited calm confidence, appearing emotionally composed despite the heavy sentence that awaits her.

Her husband, Mr Eric Oduro Assiamah, has since spoken out in protest, describing the ruling as unfair.

According to him, the money offered by the victims was voluntary and part of regular religious contributions.

“Don’t church members pay tithe and offering? There is no church that doesn’t accept money. These are some of the cons of doing God’s work. Physically, it’s difficult, but we look up to God.”

Mr Assiamah maintains that his wife never forced anyone to give money and believes the court misjudged the intent behind her actions.

Her sentencing has triggered mixed reactions across the country, with some calling it justice served and others defending her as a victim of religious persecution.

Agradaa is expected to begin serving her 15-year sentence immediately.

The Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, founder of Heaven Way Champion Ministries International Church, to 15 years in prison.

The sentence follows her conviction on Thursday, July 3, 2025, for charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

Nana Agradaa was found guilty of luring victims through a 2022 televised broadcast, in which she falsely claimed to possess spiritual powers to double money.

Her claims led several individuals to part with large sums of money in hopes of miraculous financial returns — promises that were never fulfilled.

The court’s ruling marks a significant step in the fight against fraudulent spiritual schemes and deceptive religious practices.

Ahead of sentencing, the court had ordered a mandatory pregnancy test, in line with judicial procedures, which confirmed she was not pregnant — clearing the way for sentencing to proceed.

She appeared before the court, presided over by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah, on the same day.

Adom News’ Kodwo Mensah Aboroampa who was in court reported that she was sentenced after a pregnancy test was conducted on her.

The Accra Circuit Court has convicted Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, founder of Heaven Way Champion Ministries International Church, for charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretences.

She appeared before the court, presided over by Her Honour Evelyn Asamoah, on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

The court has ordered a pregnancy test to be conducted on her before sentencing.

Nana Agradaa was arrested in October 2022 following allegations of a money-doubling scam levelled against her by some church members.

Some of the victims say they went to the church as she advertised on her TV programme that she will be doubling money during Friday’s all-night service.

In defence, Agradaa said she promised to assist her church members through her special spiritual endowments and delivered.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to charges of Chalatanic advertisement and six counts of defrauding by false pretenses.

We didn’t expect a re-run but… – Ablekuma North NDC PC [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/we-didnt-expect-a-re-run-but-ablekuma-north-ndc-pc-audio/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 10:59:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551009 The Ablekuma North parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ewurabena Aubynn, has welcomed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Aubynn acknowledged that while a rerun was not the outcome she had hoped for, she believes it is necessary for peace and fairness.

“This isn’t our heart’s desire, but it’s only fair for them to do this. I believe it is God’s way of preventing chaos in Ablekuma North and Ghana at large. The party leadership has engaged us and urged us to cooperate with the process, so we accept it,” she said.

In a press release dated July 2, 2025, the EC announced that the rerun will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

The upcoming rerun has become a high-stakes contest, as both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intensify efforts to secure the crucial parliamentary seat in the Greater Accra Region.

However, the NPP and its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, have strongly opposed the move, insisting that she won the election held on December 7, 2024, and vowing to resist any attempt to “subvert the will of the people.”

Responding to this, Ewurabena Aubynn accused her opponent of entitlement and refusal to accept defeat.

“She thought the general election would be a walk in the park just because she won the NPP primaries after distributing goodies,” she claimed.

“She’s a former MP, and people can attest to her manipulative games, aggression, and underhand tactics during elections. For them, it’s not about hard work or campaigning, it’s about buying fridges and sharing money,” Ewurabena alleged.

“But this time, the majority of voters in Ablekuma North voted for change, for development, and they voted massively for Ewurabena Aubynn.”

The EC’s decision to hold a rerun follows the NDC’s concerns over the use of scanned Pink Sheets by the NPP as part of the results.

According to the EC, the scanned Pink Sheets from 19 polling stations lacked proper verification from Presiding Officers, even though party agents had signed off on them.

The Commission has assured the public of a peaceful and transparent process, with the Ghana Police Service providing security.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former MP insisted that she won the 2024 parliamentary election “fair and square,” citing results from all pink sheets in her possession.

According to her, the collation process was nearly complete before the EC abruptly announced the rerun, a move she described as being in “bad faith.”

“I will never accept this rerun, but I dare them to go ahead with this election—and from A to Z, everybody will clap for me. The constituents love me and voted for me, and that is why I won the election,” she said.

Nana Akua also vowed that the NPP would resist any attempts by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to overturn what she believes is the legitimate will of the people. She accused the EC of setting a dangerous precedent.

“The person who has to come from Tamale to vote—where will he or she get money from? This is not good for democracy. We are setting a bad precedent, because in 2028, someone will cause mayhem, destroy ballot papers, and get away with it because we will consider a rerun,” she fumed.

The EC’s decision to schedule the rerun on July 11, 2025, comes after months of disputes over the authenticity of results from the December 7, 2024, election. The process has been marred by tensions and mutual accusations between Nana Akua and her main rival, Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC.

Court discharges lecturer, two students over UG room and bed allocation scandal https://www.adomonline.com/court-discharges-lecturer-two-students-over-ug-room-and-bed-allocation-scandal/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 07:22:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550910 An Accra Circuit Court has discharged a lecturer and two students accused of collecting GH₵106,800 under the pretext of allocating rooms and beds to students at the Dr Hilla Liman Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon.

The court, presided over by Judge Isaac Addo, struck out the case after receiving a formal request from the University of Ghana—the complainant—to discontinue the trial. This decision followed the refund of the full amount by the two students to the police.

The judge also ordered the police to return the money to all 32 affected students.

The accused persons—Joseph Appiah, 25, Stephen Nimako Ansong, 24, and Dr Kwadwo Owusu Ayeh, 58, a Senior Hall Tutor—had been jointly charged with conspiracy and 32 counts of defrauding by false pretences.

In addition, Appiah and Ansong faced a charge of abetment of crime, while Dr Ayeh was separately charged with corruption by a public officer. They all pleaded not guilty and were granted bail of GH₵100,000 each with one surety.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, leading the prosecution, told the court that the complainant, Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University, petitioned the Accra Regional Police Command on October 17, 2023, to investigate suspected fraudulent bed allocations at the hall.

A day later, a team of detectives from the Accra Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID), led by then-Regional Crime Officer Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Osei-Agbogah, began investigations on campus.

The prosecution said 32 students were identified as victims. They confirmed that Appiah and Ansong collected between GH₵2,000 and GH₵2,500 each from them, promising accommodation at Dr Hilla Liman Hall, which never materialized.

During interrogation, Appiah and Ansong reportedly admitted to working with Dr Ayeh in the bed allocation scheme. Investigations also revealed that Dr Ayeh, after assuming office, allegedly conspired with Ansong to scout for students needing accommodation. Ansong then brought in Appiah to assist in collecting funds from prospective occupants.

The trio succeeded in collecting a total of GH₵106,800, of which GH₵30,000 was initially refunded by Ansong. The full amount was later recovered.

With the University’s decision to withdraw the complaint and the money recovered, the court discharged all three accused persons and formally ended the criminal proceedings.

Explainer: What’s inside Ghana’s 24-hour economy blueprint? https://www.adomonline.com/explainer-whats-inside-ghanas-24-hour-economy-blueprint/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 06:42:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550864 The NDC government has officially launched its flagship 24-hour economy policy, 176 days into its administration. The 283-page document not only outlines how the initiative will be implemented and funded but also signals a notable shift in focus.

Initially seen as a strategy to extend the working hours of public institutions and businesses, the policy has evolved into a broader economic transformation agenda aimed at addressing structural bottlenecks in Ghana’s economy.

Two-Phase Rollout

The policy will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase focuses on direct incentives to encourage businesses to operate longer hours, while the second addresses the deeper infrastructure and legal reforms needed to sustain a continuous production model.

Tax Breaks for Extended Operations

To encourage participation, the government is offering a comprehensive set of tax and regulatory incentives. Companies that sign up for the programme will enjoy:

  • Zero import duties on manufacturing equipment, renewable energy systems, raw materials, and logistics infrastructure.

  • Corporate tax exemptions for strategic agricultural sectors, including grains, vegetables, oilseeds, tubers, livestock, and sugar.

  • Corporate tax rebates of 25% for two-shift operations and 50% for companies running three shifts.

  • Targeted VAT exemptions to reduce the cost of locally manufactured goods.

  • Discounted electricity tariffs for firms operating between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

  • Export rebates ranging from 2% to 6% for exporters of manufactured goods.

  • Fast-tracked utility connections and regulatory clearances.

  • Access to low-interest credit from the Development Bank Ghana.

In the cocoa sector, local processors enrolled in the programme will receive easier access to raw cocoa beans.

While these measures are designed to boost production, create jobs, and grow exports, they will require legal amendments in Parliament related to taxation, trade, investment, and procurement.

Fixing Structural Bottlenecks

The second phase focuses on building large industrial parks—referred to as Wumbei Parks—in each region. Each park will span at least 50 acres and operate independently with renewable energy sources such as solar and biogas. Police and fire services will also be stationed onsite to ensure uninterrupted operations.

These parks will be strategically located near new agroecological zones along the Volta Basin, where integrated farming and agro-processing will be supported by irrigation systems from the Volta Lake.

The policy also outlines plans for urban farming clusters—including greenhouses—near major cities to cut food transport costs. Greenhouse farming will be prioritized in land-scarce communities.

The goal is to integrate production with logistics, reduce supply chain costs, and enable continuous economic activity day and night.

A $4 Billion Ambition

The policy is expected to cost $4 billion in its initial phase. The government has committed $300 million in seed capital, with the remaining 92% to be raised through public-private partnerships, led by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund.

To support funding, a 2.5% import levy will be introduced on selected goods that can be produced locally, including processed foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, cement, plastic household goods, second-hand clothing, sanitary pads, and diapers.

The government expects that increased production will offset revenue losses from tax incentives, although the policy document does not provide specific figures to support this claim. It also projects the creation of over 1.7 million jobs within four years, but lacks detailed projections on export growth, tax revenue, or employment by sector.

Implementation and Oversight

To ensure effective rollout, the government plans to pass legislation establishing a 24-Hour Economy Authority, chaired by the president. A pilot programme involving 50 companies will also be launched.

However, the document offers few details on implementation timelines, project sequencing, or fiscal risks. This raises concerns, especially when viewed against the backdrop of past initiatives like the One District, One Factory (1D1F) programme. Despite spending over GH¢500 million by the end of 2023, only 169 companies had received support, and many structural challenges remained unresolved.

The key distinction with the 24-hour policy is its legislative backing, which could make it more resistant to reversal by future governments.

The Road Ahead

Ghana has unveiled one of its most ambitious industrial reforms in decades. The incentives are bold, and the structural vision is compelling. However, the absence of concrete numbers leaves critical questions unanswered.

How will the government address potential revenue shortfalls? Will it resort to borrowing? What safeguards exist to ensure policy continuity beyond the next election?

The success of the 24-hour economy will depend on private sector buy-in and the government’s ability to honour its promises without creating loopholes.

UPSA is not just concerned about students’ academics – Prof. Boadi laments rising indecency [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/upsa-is-not-just-concerned-about-students-academics-prof-boadi-laments-rising-indecency-audio/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 20:35:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550781 Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Associate Professor Isaac Boadi, has clarified the controversy surrounding the recent barring of some students from lecture halls due to indecent dressing.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Prof. Boadi described the exercise as a necessary and corrective measure aimed at upholding professionalism within the institution.

“It was an instructional and correctional exercise. We have been advising them regarding dress code, but it seems some didn’t take it seriously, so we needed to act,” he said.

Prof. Boadi expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of inappropriate dressing among students. He stressed that UPSA is not only focused on academic excellence but also on grooming students for society.

“As lecturers, who are also parents, we are not just here to teach, but to train them to become well-mannered individuals. People come with unkempt hair, wear slippers, and dress indecently, but we do not want them to carry that into the job market, as it will reflect poorly on UPSA,” he stated.

Some students were reportedly asked to leave lecture halls and return to their hostels or homes to change into clothing deemed more appropriate, an action that sparked confusion and complaints.

Some students, particularly those in Level 100, claimed the enforcement was inconsistent and appeared to target them specifically.

However, Prof. Boadi clarified that Level 200 to 400 students have already completed their exams, leaving only first-year students currently in session.

He emphasised that the exercise was not intended to violate students’ rights. “We respect human rights, but we also expect students to dress decently. Many of them live in hostels without parental guidance, so the university has to step in to instill discipline.”

Prof. Boadi added that had the university chosen to fully enforce its dress code policy, some students could have faced suspensions of two to three weeks under existing rules.

Some youths reportedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) allegedly attacked and injured several assembly members in the Effutu municipality of the Central Region.

The incident occurred on Monday during an attempt by the group to take over a public toilet facility and demand the keys.

William De-Carthia, assemblyman for the Ndaamba Electoral Area, confirmed the attack in an interview with Adom News.

He recounted that over 40 youths, riding in branded NDC pickups, motorbikes, and taxis, stormed all 18 electoral areas within the municipality wielding cutlasses and other weapons.

“They claimed their party was in power and had instructed them to take control of the toilet facility,” he said.

Mr. De-Carthia added that this was not the first such incident, noting a similar attack weeks earlier where several people were brutally assaulted. He revealed that he himself was slashed in the back with a cutlass.

Some residents have expressed concern over the rising tensions and have urged authorities to intervene to prevent further escalation.

UPSA students allegedly sent home for ‘indecent dressing’ https://www.adomonline.com/upsa-students-allegedly-sent-home-for-indecent-dressing/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 13:40:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550655 Several students of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), were on Wednesday, July 2, sent home by a task force for what has been described as indecent dressing.

The action follows earlier reports that the university would no longer tolerate inappropriate attire on campus.

According to information available to Myjoyonline.com, the affected students were asked to leave the classroom and return to their homes or hostels to change before being allowed back.

A student who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the incident, stating that a number of them were turned away in the morning and instructed to return only after changing into “more appropriate” clothing.

At the time of filing this report, the UPSA administration had yet to officially comment on the development.

The move appears to be part of renewed efforts by the university to enforce its code of conduct and promote discipline among students.

Ablekuma North: EC to re-run election in 19 polling stations https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-ec-to-re-run-election-in-19-polling-stations/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 12:36:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550630 The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that it will re-run the 2024 parliamentary election in the Ablekuma North Constituency at 19 of the 37 polling stations.

In a statement, the Commission explained that the re-run, scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, follows a meeting with key stakeholders, including representatives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to the EC, although results from the affected polling stations were approved by party agents, they were not verified by the Returning Officers, prompting the need for a fresh vote in those areas.

The Commission also requested that the Ghana Police Service provide the necessary security to ensure a peaceful and transparent process.

The final declaration of results in the constituency has been delayed due to outstanding issues with three of the 281 polling stations, which have significantly stalled the collation process.

Both the NPP and the NDC have claimed victory in what has become one of the most disputed parliamentary contests of the 2024 elections.

Tensions peaked on January 8, 2025, when the Returning Officer for the constituency resigned following a standoff over discrepancies in some pink sheets.

Since then, the EC has suspended the collation process seven times, citing security concerns amidst confrontations between party supporters.

The Commission previously stated it would only consider a re-run after completing the collation of all polling station results—a measure it described as a last resort.

NPP flagbearer race: Latest Poll ranks Bryan Acheampong as second favourite – Pius Hadzide [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-flagbearer-race-latest-poll-ranks-bryan-acheampong-as-second-favourite-pius-hadzide-video/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 11:40:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550561

The campaign team for New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong has revealed that a recent poll positions him as the second favourite candidate in the race.

Campaign Spokesperson and former Deputy Information Minister, Pius Enam Hadzide, made this disclosure on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.

Although he did not name the polling organization, Mr. Hadzide said the ranking is confirmed by the camp’s internal survey.

He acknowledged that the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, remains the clear front-runner.

Nonetheless, the team remains optimistic that despite Dr. Acheampong being the most recent candidate to declare, his rising popularity—alongside the January 31, 2025, primary date—could improve his chances.

“We see Dr. Bryan Acheampong as a winnable candidate and the polls are already picking him. He is now moving neck-to-neck with Dr. Bawumia as the second favourite candidate, but there is still time, so we believe we can win the primaries and unite the party,” he stated.

Mr. Hadzide further explained that these poll results demonstrate Dr. Acheampong’s strong influence within the party and suggest sustained support beyond the 2028 elections.

“We will campaign on the achievements of our predecessors and his vision regarding agriculture, food security, and the economy, among others.

“His policies on implementing the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) Phase Two program are what the current government is building on with the ‘Feed Ghana’ project, and that is impressive. It highlights the strategic outlook of Bryan Acheampong,” he added.

COVID-19 resurgence nationwide, not just Legon – Virologist warns [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/covid-19-resurgence-nationwide-not-just-legon-virologist-warns-audio/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 10:11:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550506

A Senior Research Fellow and Head of Virology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Professor Kofi Bonney, has revealed that Ghana’s resurging COVID-19 cases are more widespread than officially reported.

His comments follow the confirmation of a new wave of COVID-19 infections by the University of Ghana on Monday, June 23, 2025, where 107 cases were confirmed out of 316 suspected infections.

Prof. Bonney, however, indicated that the resurgence is not limited to the university campus.

“Legon is just a small community in Ghana, and people from there always move around. People sit in cars to move around and cough. So even if we have confirmed cases there, people shouldn’t think they can’t be affected,” he warned.

He advised Ghanaians to resume observing basic COVID-19 safety protocols, including wearing of nose masks, handwashing, social distancing, and avoiding contact with those showing symptoms.

According to Prof. Bonney, Noguchi’s National Influenza Centre has observed a general rise in respiratory infections during this rainy season, including COVID-19.

“We have hospitals that bring samples to the facility, and over the years, we have observed that influenza-like illness goes up during the rainy seasons,” he said.

“Cases may have been recorded in Legon, but there are a lot of cases being reported in all the 16 regions of Ghana. I believe that the Ghana Health Service (GHS) will, in due course, provide an update on all of the cases recorded nationwide,” he added.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced that the government is taking steps to secure COVID-19 vaccines locally in anticipation of further spread.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and individuals with underlying medical conditions.

Virologist urges Ghanaians to embrace COVID-19 vaccines amidst resurgence https://www.adomonline.com/virologist-urges-ghanaians-to-embrace-covid-19-vaccines-amidst-resurgence/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 09:48:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550473 The Head of Virology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Professor Kofi Bonney, has called on Ghanaians to commit to taking COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots as new infections are being recorded across the country.

He explained that while the original vaccines were not designed to eliminate the virus entirely, they remain effective in preventing severe illness—making booster doses crucial in maintaining immunity.

“The vaccines boost immunity, but the efficacy reduces at a point. So people who have already taken the vaccines must do well to get the boosters to build the immune system,” he said.

“Ghana Health Service is working to secure the vaccines, and we must all try and take it when it comes.”

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Prof. Bonney confirmed that the currently circulating strain is a slightly different subvariant of the Omicron variant, which is being closely monitored but is not considered severe.

Virologist urges Ghanaians to embrace COVID-19 vaccines amidst resurgence

“In 2022, when the cases started reducing, we were fighting the Omicron, and that is what has resurged. So this is not anything new,” he noted.

While acknowledging the strain’s general mildness in immune-competent individuals, Prof. Bonney warned that vulnerable populations remain at risk and should take extra precautions.

He also urged Ghanaians to recommit to public health practices, especially during the rainy season, which often sees an increase in influenza-like and respiratory illnesses.

“Surges in respiratory illnesses are common during the rainy period,” he said, encouraging the public to return to the familiar and effective preventive measures such as handwashing, mask-wearing in crowded places, and staying home when unwell.

Greed threatens Ghana’s future – Cardinal Turkson warns https://www.adomonline.com/greed-threatens-ghanas-future-cardinal-turkson-warns/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 08:52:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550449 Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson has urged Ghanaians to embrace a renewed sense of responsibility and solidarity, warning that unchecked greed and selfishness threaten the nation’s shared resources and the well-being of future generations.

Preaching at Ghana’s first National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Accra on Tuesday, July 1, Cardinal Turkson said the occasion must go beyond symbolic gestures and become a true turning point for moral courage and spiritual renewal.

“We gather for this sacred occasion not only to give thanks to God but under the theme of reflection, reset and renewal for national prosperity,” he said.
“These are not just words; they are a call to moral clarity, national courage, and spiritual awakening for fashioning a Ghana of opportunities for the inclusive well-being of all its children.”

A Call to Rediscover Righteous Paths

Drawing from scripture, the Cardinal likened Ghana’s current moment to the prophet Jeremiah’s call for the Israelites to “stand at a crossroads” and return to ancient, righteous paths. He reminded citizens that true prosperity must go beyond wealth and include access to food, water, shelter, healthcare, education, and peace for every Ghanaian.

He warned against environmental degradation and cited the concept of the “tragedy of the commons” to illustrate the dangers of unchecked exploitation of shared national resources.

“In the Rift Valley, there’s a community that keeps common grazing land for all. But if someone brings too many cows or sheep, the land fails to serve everyone. That is the tragedy of the commons,” he explained.

“Here in Ghana, our land is rich and endowed. It must serve all, not be destroyed by greed.”

Consequences of Greed and Neglect

Cardinal Turkson noted that Ghana is already suffering the consequences of irresponsible exploitation.

“The Pra River no longer yields prawns and shrimps; children who swim in our rivers are exposed to cyanide and mercury. Our church hospitals see rising cases of birth deformities. These are the consequences of irresponsible exploitation,” he lamented.

He stressed that national transformation is not the task of the President alone, but a shared responsibility of all citizens.

“Whatever vision of Ghana we express, we must also know our place in that vision. We need virtuous Ghanaians who live for more than personal gain,” he said.

A Time To Reflect, Reset, And Renew

Reflecting on Ghana’s journey from independence to today, Cardinal Turkson called on citizens to draw inspiration from past ideals, including the national Coat of Arms and Kwame Nkrumah’s technological vision.

“To reflect is to see our blessings and our blind spots. To reset is to turn away from what destroys us—corruption, division, and exploitation. And to renew is to build a Ghana where every child can flourish,” he said.

Quoting from the Book of Jeremiah, he urged Ghanaians to stand at the crossroads, reflect on paths that once led to unity and progress, and boldly reclaim those values.

In closing, Cardinal Turkson called for a deep sense of fraternity among all Ghanaians and urged constant prayer for the nation, its leaders, and its people.

“Virtuous living is what we all need in this land to make everything work. You don’t need to be a priest or pastor; every Ghanaian must live responsibly and think of the common good,” he said.

“Let us reflect, reset, and renew, so Ghana can be a land of prosperous living for the well-being of all.”

GRA sets date for implementation of fuel levy https://www.adomonline.com/gra-sets-date-for-implementation-of-fuel-levy/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 06:47:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550399 Barring any last-minute changes, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has announced that the implementation of the GH¢1 energy sector levy on petroleum products will take effect on July 16, 2025.

Originally scheduled for June 9, 2025, the rollout faced strong opposition from the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), transport operators, and other stakeholders.

Following engagements with key industry players, the implementation was first rescheduled to June 16, then later postponed indefinitely.

In a new statement, GRA’s Acting Commissioner-General, Anthony Akwasi Sarpong, described the levy as a critical revenue measure aimed at sustaining Ghana’s energy sector and supporting broader economic development.

“Following a thorough review of prevailing market indicators and in line with the government’s commitment to ensuring stable economic conditions, the implementation of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141), will now commence, effective 16th July 2025,” the statement read.

The GRA noted that the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) has been updated to reflect the changes under Act 1141. As such, all customs declarations made from July 16 onwards will automatically incorporate the revised levy calculations.

The Authority has called for cooperation from industry players and the general public to ensure a smooth rollout.

Romance scam suspect Dada Joe Remix extradited to U.S. to face charges https://www.adomonline.com/romance-scam-suspect-dada-joe-remix-extradited-to-u-s-to-face-charges/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 20:14:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550339 Fraud suspect Joseph Badu Boateng, widely known as Dada Joe Remix, has been extradited to the United States to face charges related to a multi-million dollar romance and inheritance fraud scheme.

The extradition was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and Ghanaian law enforcement agencies.

Boateng is alleged to be the mastermind behind a sophisticated syndicate that targeted vulnerable U.S. citizens through online romance scams and false inheritance claims. U.S. prosecutors say the scam defrauded numerous victims of millions of dollars over an extended period.

In a statement released by the U.S. Embassy, officials emphasized the importance of international cooperation in combating transnational organized crime.

“This case highlights the strong partnership between Ghanaian authorities and U.S. law enforcement in bringing fraudsters to justice,” the statement noted.

Boateng was apprehended in Ghana earlier this year after investigations linked him to the fraudulent network. Following legal procedures, he was handed over to U.S. officials and is now in custody in the United States, where he is expected to stand trial in the coming weeks.

The suspect is now in the United States where he will face justice.

A 33-year-old Ghanaian man, Samuel Yeboah, has been stabbed to death at Mile 11 in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred on Monday, June 30, during a heated argument between Samuel Yeboah and his Nigerian co-tenant, Emeka Buchi.

According to reports, during the confrontation, Buchi allegedly called her son and daughter, who later returned with a group of nine unidentified individuals. The group reportedly launched a brutal attack on Yeboah, during which he was fatally stabbed.

He was rushed to Finney Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Ayisha, a resident who assisted in transporting the victim to the hospital, told Adom News that the stabbing followed a previous altercation, during which Buchi had allegedly threatened Yeboah multiple times.

She added that three suspects, including Buchi’s daughter and sister, have been arrested, while two others remain at large.

The gruesome murder has sparked anger among the youth of Mile 11, who have issued a strong warning to the authorities. They have vowed to take matters into their own hands if the police fail to act swiftly and bring the culprits to justice.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue as investigations continue.

The suspects were arrested in a coordinated, intelligence-led operation conducted by rapid response teams from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) District and the Regional Operations Unit. This operation, backed by information from the Police Intelligence Department (PID), culminated in the arrests on Friday, June 27, 2025, at approximately 11:30 a.m.

During the operation, a suspect sustained gunshot wounds in an exchange of fire with police and later died at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Another key suspect, Yahaya Nuhu, remains at large, with a manhunt currently underway.

Those arrested include Kwadwo Kyei Baffour (39), Joseph Oppong (alias Joe, 30), and Bernard Owusu Ansah (alias Hot Boy, 27). Kwadwo Kyei Baffour has confessed to involvement in the robberies and admitted to raping a victim during one incident.

Additional suspects taken into custody are Kwadwo Konadu (28), James Asare Boateng (26), Emmanuel Asiedu (27), Maxwell Gyimah (30), and Daniel Dwumor. Bernard Owusu Ansah is currently receiving medical treatment under armed police guard at KATH.

The gang is linked to numerous armed robberies in areas including Abuakwa, Tanoso, Apatrapa, Denkyembuoso, Appiadu, and surrounding communities.

Reports suggest that some residents confronted the suspect due to her suspicious behaviour in the area. Upon interrogation and a quick search of her bag, multiple master keys were discovered.

Before her arrest, many tenants had reported missing items and signs of forced entry but had no leads on the culprit.

She allegedly waited for occupants to leave for work before quietly unlocking their doors, stealing valuables, and leaving without a trace.

However, luck eluded her when a vigilant neighbour spotted her attempting to unlock a door and raised an alarm.

She is currently in the custody of the Adenta District Command and is assisting police with ongoing investigations.

Residents suspect she may be part of a wider network involved in apartment burglaries in the area.

A video shared by Facebook user Dangme Nobi captured the suspected thief in tears while some residents interrogated her.

This brings the total number of confirmed deaths to seven since the clashes began on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, according to reports by Emmanuel Modey.

Meanwhile, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) reports that Nkwanta township has been plunged into a state of desolation, with social and economic activities grinding to a halt in the wake of the violence.

Among the casualties is a final-year student of Nkwanta Senior High School. Several others have been injured, including two female day students who sustained gunshot wounds.

All public and private schools in the municipality have been shut down as a precautionary measure to safeguard the lives of students and staff. Nkwanta Senior High School was particularly affected, with authorities arranging police escorts to ensure the safe return of students to their homes.

The unrest has also caused many non-indigenous teachers to flee the area. Shops have been closed, and the town’s usual vibrant atmosphere has been replaced by an unsettling silence.

In response, the Chief of Kpassa, Ubor Konja Tasan, has appealed to the Kokomba community to exercise restraint and actively support efforts to end the conflict.

“We have to prove that it is possible for people of all ethnic groups to live together in harmony and work toward their common aspirations,” he said.

The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, paid a working visit to commiserate with victims and affected families.

He noted that the continuing violence—with no clear sign of peace in sight—requires decisive action from the people to end the hostilities.

“It is time for the youth and elders to support the peace process in order to bring lasting peace to the area,” he urged.

Mr. Gyapong expressed concern that the prolonged conflict is threatening the peace, safety, and development of the region. He called on the feuding factions to choose dialogue over violence and to prioritize peaceful resolutions over weapons that lead to the loss of lives and the destruction of property.

Mr. Dwumfour polled 445 votes to beat his sole contender and media trainer, Charles Yao Mawusi, who garnered 245 valid votes.

For the Vice-President position, Rebecca Ekpe of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) won the race, polling 414 votes to defeat Daily Graphic’s Foreign Editor, Mary Mensah, who secured 272 votes.

Additionally, incumbent Organising Secretary Dominic Hlordzi was elected General Secretary of the association with 443 votes, surpassing two-time contestant Multimedia’s Akwasi Agyeman, who polled 247 votes.

In another keenly contested race, the acting Editor of Graphic Business, Suleiman Mustapha, was elected Organising Secretary with 365 votes, beating the GJA’s former Eastern Regional Chairman Maxwell Kudekor of Multimedia Group, who polled 321 votes.

Zadok Kwame Gyesi, a former Graphic Online staff member, was elected Public Affairs Director of the GJA with 431 votes. His contender, Caesar Abagali of the Ghana News Agency (GNA), secured 253 votes.

Similarly, Bertha Badu Agyei of the GNA was elected Treasurer of the GJA after securing 401 votes, beating Theodora A. Amedetor Yakunu of GBC, who polled 287 votes.

The keenly fought election saw national candidates criss-cross the country to canvass votes over the past month. Mr. Dwumfour first joined the GJA leadership as Organising Secretary before ascending to the Presidency and has now been rewarded with a second term.

Regional Executives

In regional executive positions, 49 candidates contested for Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer roles. While 17 candidates in the Ashanti, Volta, Central, Upper East, Upper West, and Eastern regions faced opponents, 31 candidates went unopposed.

More results and reactions will be carried in tomorrow’s edition of the Daily Graphic. Visit our online platform at www.graphic.com.gh for more on the GJA elections.

In the Central Region, GBC’s Kingsley Nana Buadu was elected Chairman of the association, while Senior News Editor of Multimedia Group in Kumasi, Kofi Adu Domfeh, was elected Ashanti Regional Chairman.

Some GJA members who went unopposed as Regional Chairmen include Desmond Cudjoe (Western Region), Michael Dewornu (Tema), Regina Benneh Siaw (Bono), Frederick Antwi (Bono East), Kwabena Ntow (Oti Region), Yakubu Abdul-Majeed (Northern Region), and Mohammed Fugu (North East).

Continuity

In his victory speech, Mr. Dwumfour said his re-election signalled “a clear desire for continuity, for the consolidation of our gains, and for the acceleration of the initiatives his first administration started.”

He emphasized that his second term would focus on building on successes, learning from challenges, and pushing boundaries to achieve more together.

“We will continue to advocate for better working conditions, improved press freedom, and greater potential for all media practitioners. We will intensify efforts to combat impunity against journalists, ensuring that those who attack or threaten our members are brought to justice, thereby creating a freer media environment for all,” he said.

Assurance

Mr. Dwumfour added that under his leadership, the media would continue to hold government accountable, be the voice of the voiceless, and provide accurate, balanced, and insightful information that empowers the public to make informed decisions.

He called on all stakeholders—including government, civil society organisations (CSOs), academia, and the private sector—to collaborate with GJA, noting that a strong and independent media is a partner in national development.

Frank Adu Jnr warns Mahama against loyalty-over-performance culture https://www.adomonline.com/frank-adu-jnr-warns-mahama-against-loyalty-over-performance-culture/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 06:53:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549882 Former CEO of Cal Bank, Frank Adu Jnr, has cautioned President John Mahama to ensure that political appointees in his administration deliver on their mandates—or be swiftly removed from office.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, June 30, Adu Jnr said persistent underperformance in key sectors stems from a dangerous culture in which political appointees are shielded from accountability due to their affiliations.

“It is early days yet,” the renowned banker stated, “but President Mahama has to be mindful of how his appointees deliver.”

He acknowledged recent signs of economic stability, particularly in the performance of the cedi, which he said “allows for planning.” However, he warned that the bigger challenge lies in fulfilling political promises—something often hampered by how appointees are selected and managed.

“So far so good,” Mr. Adu Jnr noted. “But the difficulty is in keeping those promises. And the kind of political system we operate in this country basically forces contestants to make promises they later struggle to fulfil.”

He expressed concern over the entrenched culture of impunity among political appointees, describing it as a systemic flaw that undermines performance-based governance.

“I have not seen or heard, in probably the past 18 years, any sector minister or president criticise or question an appointee for non-performance,” he said. “And you know why? It’s because all these appointees are political affiliates.”

According to Adu Jnr, political loyalty often outweighs competence. Those who support election campaigns are rewarded with positions, but when they fail to deliver, their connections protect them from dismissal.

“For example, in any of the parastatals—say VRA or ECG—if the CEO, being a political appointee, is underperforming, it becomes very difficult for the sector minister to take them on,” he explained.

He added that this approach weakens the effectiveness of governance and fosters a culture where defending incompetence becomes the norm.

“Anytime there’s a problem in any sector or ministry, you find the party or minister defending the mismanagement instead of confronting it.”

Describing the system as fundamentally anti-meritocratic, he said: “The more noise you make while in a position, the more likely you are to become a CEO, ambassador, or minister. That is not meritocracy.”

He cited the Akufo-Addo administration as a prime example of what happens when appointees are not held accountable.

“That happened under Akufo-Addo. You take the SIGA companies and all these parastatals—how many of them performed? Maybe SIC, which paid dividends and so on.”

Mr. Adu Jnr concluded by stressing that unless Ghana shifts toward a performance-driven system, President Mahama and future governments risk repeating a cycle of unfulfilled promises and poor delivery.

The DOVVSU Department of the Kasoa Divisional Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old nursing mother, Mary Tawiah, over an alleged attempt to poison her child following her boyfriend’s infidelity.

The boyfriend, Kobby Nbelenbele, is also in custody, assisting with investigations.

The unfortunate incident occurred at the Kasoa Old Market in the Awutu Senya East Municipality of the Central Region.

Information gathered by Adom News suggests that Mary and Kobby live in Teshie, but he allegedly abandoned her to be with another woman in Kasoa.

Mary reportedly confronted Kobby and his alleged mistress at the Kasoa Old Market, sparking a heated argument.

An eyewitness, Felix Dnkwa, narrated that in the midst of the confrontation, Mary threatened to poison their child and pulled out a substance from her bag, attempting to feed it to the boy.

However, her attempt was thwarted by the swift intervention of bystanders, who quickly restrained her and handed her over to the police.

Nkwanta Clashes: Chief’s house set ablaze in Bonakye [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/nkwanta-clashes-chiefs-house-set-ablaze-in-bonakye-listen/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 11:32:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549598 A group of unidentified angry youth have allegedly set fire to the house of the Akyode chief in Bonakye, Oti Region, amid ongoing renewed clashes in the Nkwanta South Municipality.

The Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong, confirmed the incident during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

He revealed that the attack took place on Sunday, June 29, 2025, even as mediation efforts to restore peace were still underway.

In addition, Mr. Gyapong stated that gunshots are still being fired in some communities, accompanied by the destruction of property.

The Minister assured that the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) will visit the affected communities where tensions are still high.

He condemned the violence in no uncertain terms, expressing concern over its impact on lives and livelihoods.

“Electricity has been cut to areas where the clashes have re-emerged. Banks, schools, and other essential services have been shut down,” he said.

However, he assured that security has been strengthened in the area, with a joint military and police patrol in force. He added that technology is being deployed to identify and apprehend the culprits.

He vowed that anyone arrested in connection with the chaos will face the full rigors of the law.

“The situation where we arrest and release people will be a thing of the past. We will deal with them decisively to serve as a deterrent,” he stated.

Commenting on the curfew imposed in the area, Mr. Gyapong noted that it would be extended to other tension-prone communities as a preventive measure.

The clashes re-emerged on Thursday, June 26, 2025, after a group attempted to pour libation as part of preparations for the upcoming Yam Festival. The move was resisted by another faction, reigniting longstanding tensions among ethnic groups in the municipality.

Three students have lost their lives, while several others have sustained various degrees of injuries.

According to the Regional Minister, the violence was unexpected, especially since all tribal groups had previously agreed to suspend public festivals due to the fragile security situation.

Former GIHOC boss Kofi Jumah reportedly arrested https://www.adomonline.com/former-gihoc-boss-kofi-jumah-reportedly-arrested/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 07:59:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549549 National Security operatives have reportedly arrested the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, Maxwell Kofi Jumah.

A report by Accra-based Citi News indicates that Mr. Jumah was picked up at his residence in Kumasi on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

The arrest followed a request by operatives to speak with him. He was subsequently transported in a pickup truck to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, where he is currently in custody.

This development comes weeks after National Security operatives, on May 15, 2025, raided Mr. Jumah’s residence in his absence in an attempt to recover state vehicles allegedly in his possession.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart is said to be under investigation for alleged financial impropriety during his tenure as head of the state-owned distillery.

The allegations include the questionable acquisition of state vehicles and the mismanagement of company assets.

Mr. Jumah is also accused of inflating the staff population at GIHOC, which placed a financial strain on the company, and of selling company properties in Tema valued at over $700,000 without proper authorisation.

Minority slams GH¢80m bail for former Buffer Stock CEO, wife as pre-trial punishment https://www.adomonline.com/minority-slams-gh%c2%a280m-bail-for-former-buffer-stock-ceo-wife-as-pre-trial-punishment/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 07:00:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549518 The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over what it describes as “pre-trial punishment” disguised as bail conditions imposed on Abdul Hannan Wahab, the former CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), and his wife.

Following a dramatic arrest operation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on June 25 in both Accra and Tamale, Alhaji Wahab and his wife were detained for alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

But according to the Minority, the mode of arrest and the subsequent bail terms were nothing short of persecution.

“Mr Wahab was picked up like a fugitive. His wife, too. This is not justice; it’s humiliation,” said Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei in a press statement released on June 29.

She described the bail amounts—GH¢50 million for Wahab and GH¢30 million for his wife—as “punitive and excessive.”

“These are allegations. No charges have been proven. So why impose bail conditions that are more punishing than a conviction?” she asked, accusing EOCO of turning due process into a political weapon.

The Minority insists that the justification for such high bail conditions is non-existent.

“Section 96 of Act 30 is clear. Bail is meant to ensure appearance in court, not to destroy lives. These conditions are simply outrageous,” the statement read.

The group further argued that Wahab poses no flight risk.

“He has served this country with distinction. He’s a family man, not a criminal. He’s not going to disappear,” the statement added. “What exactly is the state afraid of?”

The Minority also accused the NDC government of orchestrating a quiet campaign of retribution.

“This is not about accountability—it’s about settling scores. The pattern is clear. People who served under the previous administration are being targeted.”

They cautioned EOCO’s Acting Executive Director, Raymond Archer, to tread carefully.

“History will judge your conduct. Posterity is watching,” they said. “Ghana is bigger than any political party.”

While affirming their support for accountability and legal due process, the Minority stressed that justice must not be selective or vindictive.

“Weaponising institutions for politics is a threat to our democracy. What was wrong yesterday is still wrong today, no matter who is in power.”

The Caucus is now demanding an immediate review of the bail conditions.

“This is not bail; it’s punishment. Mr Wahab and his wife must be released on reasonable terms that reflect their rights and dignity.”

They also called on civil society, the clergy, the media, and all Ghanaians to resist what they described as a dangerous trend.

“Let us speak out. Let us rise above political vendettas. Ghana’s institutions must serve justice, not fear.”

The Minority’s verdict was blunt: “This is a political hit job dressed in legal robes. And we will not be silent.”

Four Chinese Nationals arrested for illegal mining in Adansi-Asokwa https://www.adomonline.com/four-chinese-nationals-arrested-for-illegal-mining-in-adansi-asokwa/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 13:14:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549446 Police have arrested four Chinese nationals for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Subin and Jimi rivers in Atatam, a community in the Adansi-Asokwa District of the Ashanti Region.

The arrest was part of a joint operation involving the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), her team, and personnel from the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, led by Regional Operations Commander ASP Enoch Boateng.

The suspects—Li Quan, 44; Lu Jianzheng, 36; Li Xuyu, 47; and Su Shanxing, 63—were allegedly mining illegally along the two rivers, which are key sources of drinking water for several nearby communities. Their activities have reportedly led to the destruction of forest cover equivalent to about ten football fields.

Despite laws prohibiting foreigners from participating in small-scale mining, the four were found operating heavy machinery at the site. During the operation, 11 excavators were seized.

Parts of four machines were removed to immobilize them, while the remaining seven were transported to the Regional CID in Bekwai.

Additionally, three pump action guns were recovered from the suspects.

The operation highlights the ongoing fight against illegal mining and environmental degradation in Ghana’s mining communities.

Ignore fake voters’ list – GJA Elections Committee to members https://www.adomonline.com/ignore-fake-voters-list-gja-elections-committee-to-members/ Sun, 29 Jun 2025 13:03:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549438 The Elections Committee of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has cautioned members to disregard a fake voters’ register circulating on social media ahead of the Association’s National and Regional Elections slated for Monday, June 30, 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, June 29, the Committee expressed grave concern over what it described as a deliberate attempt to mislead members and erode confidence in the electoral process.

“The Committee urges all members to ignore this mischievous fabrication and rely solely on the official voters’ register, which bears the signatures of both the GJA General Secretary and Treasurer,” the statement said.

Members who are uncertain about their inclusion on the official list are encouraged to verify their status via the GJA’s official website or by contacting the Elections Committee directly.

To ensure security and order, the Committee announced that the Ghana Police Service will be deployed to all regional voting centres during the election.

“Any person or group attempting to disrupt the process will be swiftly removed from the premises by the police,” the Committee warned.

It also reminded members that valid identification is required to vote. Acceptable IDs include a Ghanaian Passport, Voter ID, or Ghana Card.

“Let us all work together to ensure a peaceful and credible election. May the best candidates win – and may the GJA be the ultimate winner.”

Illegal miners ambush Forestry Commission patrol team in Jimira Forest Reserve https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-miners-ambush-forestry-commission-patrol-team-in-jimira-forest-reserve/ Sat, 28 Jun 2025 18:31:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549399 A Forestry Commission Rapid Response team narrowly escaped death today as about 20 fully armed illegal miners still operating within the Jimira Forest Reserve ambushed and opened fire on them as they embarked on their usual patrol duties.

Officials of the commission told JoyNews they had an intel on Saturday, 28 June, 2025 that some illegal miners have invaded Compartment 34 of the Jimira Forest Reserve (Bentiko-Pakyi portion).

“Apparently, we had made attempts on two occasions to clamp down on illegal miners at the said portion of the Reserve but were prevented by armed thugs.

“The last incident occurred on May 27, 2025, when we visited the area with our Rapid Team supported by 7 police officers from the Nkawie Divisional Police Command,” he said.

“At that instance, the armed thugs prevented the team from accessing the reserve.” He hinted.

Saturday’s exercise was carried out by the Rapid Response Team and other officers totalling 8.

While approaching the boundary to the Reserve, the thugs had parked three pick-up vehicles on the route and ordered them to stop.

Upon stopping, the thugs numbering over 20 who had laid ambush in the nearby vegetation emerged and started firing warning shots.

“One of our officers who was seated at the front of one of our vehicles was hit with a machete several times by the thugs,” An officer with the team said.

“One of our vehicles also got damaged from the gun shots. Fortunately, apart from the officer who was hit with the machete, no one got injured,” he narrated.

The team sensing danger retreated for safety. The matter has once again been reported to the Nkawie Divisional Police Command.

A similar incident about two months ago saw a member of the team slashed in the Knee with machete by illegal miners.

The Jimira and Jimira extension forest reserves have become no-go areas even for forestry officials protecting the reserves.

The chaos reportedly erupted in the early hours of Thursday, 26 June.

Municipal Chief Executive Joseph Antwi, who confirmed the incident, attributed the violence to a confrontation between rival groups during a libation ceremony.

According to Mr. Antwi, gunshots were heard around 2:00 a.m. when members of one ethnic group attempted to perform traditional rites ahead of the Yam Festival.

The act was fiercely resisted by a rival faction, reigniting long-standing tensions that local authorities have been working to defuse.

He stated that the victims were rushed to the hospital, but one person succumbed to injuries around 3 p.m.

“There are two young ladies who were also shot; one has been moved to the hospital. The other—we can’t find her. We do not know her whereabouts as I speak,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV, expressing concern for the missing victim’s safety.

Mr. Antwi assured that efforts are ongoing to restore calm and locate the missing woman, adding that the Municipal Security Council will convene an emergency meeting in response to the incident.

The body of a 38-year-old Okada rider, popularly known as Gayito, has been retrieved after he drowned while helping travellers cross the flooded Bia River in Dadieso, in the Suaman District of the Western North Region.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday morning after days of heavy rainfall caused the Bia River to overflow, rendering the Dadieso–Kwasuo road impassable.

Gayito was reportedly ferrying stranded passengers across the dangerous current when he slipped and was swept away by the forceful waters.

Eyewitnesses said the rider had already helped several people to safety before being overpowered by the strong current.

Despite immediate rescue efforts by passersby and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Gayito could not be found at the time.

Search efforts intensified with support from the Suaman District Assembly and local emergency responders.

According to reports, traditional leaders in the area performed customary rites at the riverbank early Friday morning, after which the body was recovered.

The community has been thrown into mourning, hailing Gayito as a hero who lost his life while trying to save others.

Meanwhile, NADMO continues to caution residents against attempting to cross floodwaters, especially during peak rains.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

It is, however, not immediately clear what triggered the bees to swarm and attack.

The residents have called on the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to fumigate the area to ensure their safety and prevent further attacks.

However, firefighters say they lack the necessary fumigation equipment, forcing many residents to flee the town in search of safe havens.

The Municipal NADMO Director, Eric Boateng, has urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that adequate measures are being put in place to protect lives and property.

Sosa, a 71-year-old retired teacher, was discovered in a well on a farm.

The tragic incident, which has sent shockwaves across the community and beyond, occurred on Wednesday, June 25, at about 7:00 a.m.

Adzika Solomon, a resident, said in an interview that the family of the deceased announced Mr. Sosa’s disappearance on Sunday, June 23, 2025.

“We heard of Mr. Sosa’s disappearance on Sunday evening, and all efforts made by the community to find him were futile. It was so tragic to find him in this condition,” he said.

He explained that many suspect the victim may have been heading to the farm when he accidentally fell into the well, which was constructed for irrigation purposes.

“The height of the well is very short, and there is no indication or demarcation either,” Mr. Solomon added.

Mr. Laurent Doe, the Assembly Member for the area, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the incident was reported to the Anloga Police, who later retrieved the body from the well.

“Due to the conditions and the situation at hand, the deceased was buried immediately; the body was almost decomposing. We acted according to the advice we received,” he said.

Mr. Doe further commended the Anloga Police and the Environmental Protection Authority for their swift response.

He urged the victim’s family and community members to remain calm and assist the police in their investigation to uncover the full details surrounding the incident.

The well was later destroyed by the community to prevent any future accidents.

The police have since commenced an investigation into the matter.

The suspects, Mohammed Mubarak, aged 38, and Elizabeth Darkwah, also aged 38, were arrested on June 9 and 17, respectively.

They were subsequently arraigned before the Kodie and Suame District Courts, remanded into police custody, and are expected to reappear in court on July 4, 2025.

In a statement, the Police said preliminary investigations revealed that in 2024, Elizabeth allegedly defrauded the deceased by collecting an unspecified amount of money under the pretext of helping him unearth ancient family gold.

As part of the scheme, she reportedly visited the victim’s residence at Bampenase near Mamponteng at night with Mubarak. Together, they dug up 20 pieces of a yellowish substance, claiming it was gold that needed to be purified at her church before it could be used or sold.

However, she later avoided all attempts by the deceased to arrange the so-called purification.

She then allegedly conspired with Mubarak and three other suspects currently on the run to abduct and murder the victim before he could visit the church.

Mr. Darko was taken to Aboabugya, and when he attempted to escape, he was deliberately knocked down and run over by a Honda Odyssey vehicle driven by Mubarak, resulting in his death.

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices.

188 Ghanaians face U.S. deportation – Okudzeto Ablakwa https://www.adomonline.com/188-ghanaians-face-u-s-deportation-okudzeto-ablakwa/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 07:03:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548927 The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 188 Ghanaians are officially on a U.S. deportation list, as part of a renewed immigration crackdown under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, June 26, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that Ghana has been formally notified of the list and is working closely with U.S. authorities to ensure a humane and orderly repatriation process.

“We have so far been formally notified of 188 Ghanaians on President Trump’s deportation list,” Mr. Ablakwa said.

“Our embassies in New York and Washington are cooperating with U.S. counterparts, and travel certificates are being promptly issued.”

He emphasized that Ghana will receive all returnees with dignity and has activated a comprehensive reintegration plan in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the Ghana Immigration Service.

“We will be at the airport to welcome our compatriots and ensure they are properly integrated,” he assured.

“This will be done discreetly to protect their dignity, especially since many are returning under distressing circumstances—some without personal belongings or savings.”

The revelation follows a Washington Post report suggesting the U.S. is preparing a second wave of travel bans, this time potentially targeting 36 countries—up from the 19 affected during Trump’s first term.

While Ghana has not been officially named on that list, Mr. Ablakwa was clear: the government is not taking any chances.

“We’ve had very productive meetings with the U.S. State Department and White House officials. Ghana’s long-standing and strategic ties with the United States will count for something,” he said.

He underscored Ghana’s proactive diplomacy, insisting the country has consistently demonstrated goodwill and cooperation with U.S. immigration protocols.

“We are confident Ghana will not be treated like countries facing serious national security red flags. Our cooperation has been consistent, and we remain a responsible partner.”

We planned to resume our strike today, but… – GRNMA [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/we-planned-to-resume-our-strike-today-but-grnma-listen/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:03:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548790 The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has revealed that it came close to resuming its strike action today, June 26, 2025.

The General Secretary, David Koranteng Twum, disclosed this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

“The National Council decided that we resume the strike today, but after extensive discussions between Wednesday and Thursday, we reached a consensus to rescind our decision,” he stated.

Mr. Twum emphasised that had the strike gone ahead, the association would not have provided any roadmap, adding that nurses in the country are not given the respect they deserve.

He stated that the association has given the government until July 10, 2025, to meet four key demands, warning that the deadline is non-negotiable.

He further cautioned that if the government fails to act within the set timeframe, the GRNMA will not hesitate to resume its industrial action.

The GRNMA on June 13 suspended its strike, which began on June 2, following “fruitful” negotiations with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and government representatives.

A follow-up meeting was scheduled for Thursday, June 26, but was postponed due to the unavailability of some key stakeholders.

The crucial meeting was to determine whether the truce holds or if nurses and midwives will once again take industrial action, which previously disrupted healthcare services nationwide.

Parliament has passed the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, resulting in notable changes to Ghana’s public holiday calendar.

The bill, laid before the House by Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, was passed on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

Among the key changes, the bill reinstates July 1 as a public holiday and reverts the observance of Founder’s Day to September 21.

Addressing the House, the Asawase MP stated that the bill also includes provisions to shift all midweek holidays—those falling on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays—to the nearest Friday.

He explained that the move is intended to boost productivity and allow citizens to enjoy extended weekends.

“Mr. Speaker, we are keeping 1st January as New Year’s Day, 7th January as Constitution Day, 6th March as Independence Day, March or April for Good Friday and Easter Monday for our Christian brothers, 1st May as Labour Day, and 1st July as Republic Day.

“It was pushed to commemorate it. We believe that this is a very significant day in the life of Ghana that we should not just relegate to the background, and therefore we are bringing it back as a full holiday. We believe that as a country, we are united around the 1st of July,” Mr. Mubarak explained.

However, the Minority strongly opposed the decision to fast-track the bill under a certificate of urgency.

They argued that the Mahama-led government is sidestepping more pressing national matters that deserve immediate parliamentary attention.

You’re a ‘small boy’ in NPP; tone down your utterances – Former MP slams Nana B https://www.adomonline.com/youre-a-small-boy-in-npp-tone-down-your-utterances-former-mp-slams-nana-b/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 12:32:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548653 Former Subin Member of Parliament (MP), Eugene Boakye Antwi, has taken a swipe at New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, urging him to be more measured in his public utterances.

In a strongly worded response during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Antwi described Nana B as a “small boy” in the party whose comments often lack the maturity expected of someone in his position.

“Excuse me to say, he is a small boy in the party. Being a National Organiser doesn’t make you a senior member. He is my young brother, and I will urge him to be measured in his utterances. His tone and language must reflect his position,” he said.

Mr. Antwi warned that speaking out of emotion could backfire.
“When he talks out of emotion, we will also use emotions to vote. As a National Organiser, the masses must gravitate towards you, so you must be patient in dealing with the people. In rebuilding, we must be open to suggestions. If the ideas don’t help, we discard them—not insult people,” he cautioned.

His comments follow Nana B’s response to NPP stalwart Dr. Arthur Kennedy, who recently questioned the timing of the party’s presidential primaries. Dr. Kennedy argued that choosing a flagbearer at this point—after the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections—was premature and could be disastrous. He likened the party’s rebuilding process to constructing a building that requires a solid foundation.

However, Nana B dismissed the analogy, insisting the NPP’s structures are already in place and ready to support the party’s future.

But Mr. Antwi believes Nana B’s reaction was unhelpful and divisive.
“We need sober reflection, not bravado. Rebuilding after a loss takes more than structures—it requires humility, unity, and open-mindedness,” he said.
