Communications Minister gives MultiChoice Ghana Sept. 6 deadline to cut prices https://www.adomonline.com/communications-minister-gives-multichoice-ghana-sept-6-deadline-to-cut-prices/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 13:14:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574518 The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel George, has directed MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, to reduce its subscription charges by September 6, 2025, or face the possibility of losing its license.

Speaking at the Digital Africa Summit in Accra, Mr. George emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring fair pricing for Ghanaian consumers in line with improved economic conditions. He disclosed that officials are scheduled to meet MultiChoice tomorrow to resolve the issue.

“They have up to the 6th of September. If by then there is no resolution, we will shut down the operations of MultiChoice. No company is more powerful than the collective interest of the Ghanaian people,” he warned.

The Minister further revealed that MultiChoice has failed to submit critical pricing data required under the Electronic Communications Act (ECA), resulting in arrears owed to the National Communications Authority (NCA). The company has also accrued between GH¢150,000 and GH¢170,000 in fines following a GH¢10,000 daily penalty imposed two weeks ago.

Mr. George added that the government’s directive for a 30 percent reduction in subscription fees has so far been ignored.

NPP welcomes Okyere Baafi’s apology after Akwatia by-election defeat https://www.adomonline.com/npp-welcomes-okyere-baafis-apology-after-akwatia-by-election-defeat/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 12:24:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574485 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Koduah, has defended New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi, following public backlash over his pledge to resign if the party lost the Akwatia by-election.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Koduah praised the lawmaker for his swift apology, describing it as a rare show of humility in Ghanaian politics.

“I will commend Michael Okyere Baafi for his swift decision to apologise. The work we all did was commendable, but from day one, Okyere Baafi was one of the first people to be in Akwatia. He was part of the committee deployed to oversee the acclamation and all election-related activities, so clearly he was optimistic,” the NPP General Secretary said.

He added that the party values Baafi’s openness, stressing that if more government officials demonstrated such courage to apologise when necessary, the country’s politics would be healthier.

“If some government officials had the courage to offer such apologies for certain statements, the country would have been better off. So, the NPP are very happy with his decision to apologise,” Mr. Koduah noted.

Mr. Okyere Baafi came under pressure after the NPP’s loss in the Akwatia by-election, where he had earlier vowed to resign if the opposition triumphed. Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the contest with 18,199 votes against the NPP’s Kwame Asumadu, who secured 15,235.

The defeat sparked calls from political opponents, particularly within the NDC, for the former Deputy Trade Minister to honour his words and step down. His subsequent apology has divided opinion, with some dismissing it as inadequate and others, like the NPP leadership, welcoming it as a responsible step.

NPP’s Gary Nimako reveals late Ernest Kumi planned to resign https://www.adomonline.com/npps-gary-nimako-reveals-late-ernest-kumi-planned-to-resign/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 11:17:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574440

The Director of Legal Affairs for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gary Nimako, has disclosed that the late Ernest Kumi, former Member of Parliament for Akwatia, had intended to resign from Parliament just six days before his untimely death.

In January 2025, the Koforidua High Court had placed an interim injunction on Kumi, preventing him from being sworn in as MP for Akwatia. Despite the ruling, he went ahead with the swearing-in, prompting the court to cite him for contempt and issue a warrant for his arrest. In June 2025, however, the Supreme Court overturned the ruling, affirming his legitimacy as a legislator.

Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday, September 2, Mr. Nimako revealed that Kumi had grown frustrated by continuous harassment in his constituency and had confided his wish to quit politics.

“Ernest Kumi said that he wants to resign from Parliament. Are you aware? He said he was tired because of the harassment they were doing to him at the constituency. He was tired; he wants to resign from Parliament and go and stay at home,” Mr. Nimako stated.

He further emphasized the sincerity of his disclosure:

“Do you know I am an ex-seminarian? I went to Catholic school to become a Catholic priest. Ask my people who were with me, they will tell you. I will tell the truth to you, and the truth will set me free.”

Reflecting on the emotional strain Kumi endured before his death, Mr. Nimako added:

“The gentleman was harassed and over-harassed. Six days before he died… He said he was tired.”

Kumi’s sudden passing led to the Akwatia by-election, which was subsequently won by Bernard Bediako of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

NPP defends candidate selection process in Akwatia by-election https://www.adomonline.com/npp-defends-candidate-selection-process-in-akwatia-by-election/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 10:43:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574363 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Koduah, has defended the party’s choice of candidate in the recently held Akwatia by-election, stressing that the selection process was fair, peaceful, and rooted in consensus.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Koduah acknowledged that while the NPP government had made notable contributions to development in Akwatia, challenges such as poor road infrastructure still remained.

He cautioned, however, that no government could complete all projects within just eight years.

Mr. Koduah dismissed suggestions that the acclamation of the NPP candidate created divisions within the party, insisting that the process was smooth and widely accepted by stakeholders.

“I will agree with the assertion that our candidate was not unpopular or that his acclamation created rancour. There was no protest or disaffection after his selection,” he said.

He explained that party leaders and stakeholders organized a special delegates’ conference to build consensus, ensuring that all individuals who would have contested in a primary were present and agreed to the outcome.

“If we had gone into a primary, there would have been divisiveness, and our woes would have deepened. Perhaps we wouldn’t have even secured the number of votes we polled,” he added.

Mr. Koduah further noted that losing elections often comes with criticisms but maintained that settling on a consensus candidate was in the party’s best interest.

The Akwatia by-election, held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, followed the death of the sitting MP, Ernest Kumi.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious with 18,199 votes. His closest contender, Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, secured 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) polled 82.

The NDC’s victory sparked street celebrations in Akwatia, with political observers describing the result as significant due to the constituency’s reputation as a swing seat.

The victim, a driver’s assistant, had visited a mechanic shop to repair their vehicle when the incident occurred.

Eyewitness Kwame Appiah told Adom News that they suddenly heard a loud blast from a carbide cylinder. Rushing to the scene, they found the victim lying in a pool of blood with deep cuts on his head.

He was initially taken to the Tafo Government Hospital but was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

“We haven’t experienced such an incident in Suame Magazine before, ever since I came here,” the eyewitness said, adding that the explosion happened in the absence of the shop owner.

“The man was waiting for his master and the shop owner to repair the fault they came with, but no one can tell how the carbide cylinder exploded to cause this harm,” he added.

The incident has since instilled fear among many artisans who rely on carbide cylinders for their work at Suame Magazine.

We won’t accept Okyere Baafi’s apology; he must resign – NDC’s Tanko-Computer https://www.adomonline.com/we-wont-accept-okyere-baafis-apology-he-must-resign-ndcs-tanko-computer/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 07:42:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574289 Deputy National Elections Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has rejected the apology issued by New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi, following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the Akwatia by-election.

According to him, the lawmaker must either honour his pledge to resign or face public accountability in Parliament.

“We are going to Michael Okyere Baafi’s constituency. He has apologised, but we are not accepting his apology. He must resign. If he doesn’t resign, Ghanaians will not take politicians seriously.

We must be serious. They must hold us to our words. Whatever comes out of my mouth, they must take it seriously. I can’t just stand here and make allegations, say certain things, and then within 24 hours apologise,” Tanko-Computer said.

Recalling Baafi’s confidence before the results were declared, he noted:

“Do you know that he came in when we were about to start the collation, beaming with smiles, telling me that ‘we are winning,’ until I showed him the results on my phone that ‘my friend, you have lost the election, and I’m coming to your constituency for the by-election,’ and then he started perspiring. That’s when he realised things had changed.”

The NDC official stressed that Baafi must be held accountable for his own words.

“The gentleman made a categorical statement: ‘I will resign.’ Let us go and test their strength in that constituency and see whether that is truly an NPP stronghold. That’s why he felt confident to say he would resign. He was here with us, and we are going to hold him to it,” he added.

Mr. Tanko-Computer further warned that the NDC would escalate the matter if Baafi failed to act.

“If he doesn’t, I will write to the Speaker of Parliament, and he must apologise on the floor of Parliament so that the whole public will see who he is. People like him must allow decency in our politics so that Ghanaians will respect us,” he declared.

Akwatia by-election: Okyere Baafi apologises over resignation comment after NPP’s loss https://www.adomonline.com/akwatia-by-election-okyere-baafi-apologises-over-resignation-comment-after-npps-loss/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 07:29:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574283 New Juaben South MP, Michael Okyere Baafi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has apologised for his controversial statement that he would resign if his party failed to win the Akwatia by-election.

During the one-week observance of the late Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi, Mr. Okyere Baafi sharply criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for failing to deliver on its 2024 campaign promises and boldly declared, “If the NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP. Mark my words!”

However, speaking in an interview on Accra-based AsaasePa FM, the former Deputy Trade Minister admitted that the comment was made in the heat of the campaign to energise his supporters, but conceded it was “a step too far.”

“I want to apologise to Ghanaians. I only said it to ginger my people, but on reflection, it wasn’t the best. With the kind of work we put in, I didn’t think we could lose,” he explained.

Mr. Baafi attributed the NPP’s defeat to what he described as widespread vote buying, alleging that the NDC distributed cash and items such as hair dryers and spraying machines to sway voters. He claimed amounts ranging from GH₵500 to GH₵1,000 were handed out on polling day.

He further cautioned that the growing monetisation of Ghana’s elections poses a serious threat to democracy.

“If this is the path our politics will continue to take, then I won’t put myself forward as MP again,” he warned.

The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of Ernest Kumi on July 7, 2025, after a short illness.

Certified results from the Electoral Commission (EC) showed that Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC secured 18,199 votes to defeat the NPP’s Kwame Asumadu, who polled 15,235. Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) finished a distant third with 82 votes.

In all, 34,122 ballots were cast, of which 33,819 were declared valid and 303 rejected. Voting was conducted across 119 polling stations, closing at 5 p.m. before sorting and counting in the presence of party agents, security personnel, and independent observers.

Two women arrested over abusive statements against Mahama weep in court https://www.adomonline.com/two-women-arrested-over-abusive-statements-against-mahama-weep-in-court/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 07:03:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574267 Two women who allegedly made offensive and abusive statements against President John Mahama in connection with the August 6 helicopter crash broke down in tears as they appeared before the Adenta Circuit Court 1 for the second time.

The accused, Priscilla Duah Birago, a 29-year-old National Service Person, and Charity Dede Tetteh, a 29-year-old beautician, were remanded for an additional two days. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit an offence, offensive conduct, and breach of the peace.

According to the prosecution, the two conspired to make comments such as: “We would have been happier if the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, was involved in the helicopter crash and dwarfs had eaten him up and that a lot of people are dying under his tenure of office.”

The case has been adjourned to September 4, 2025, when the accused are expected to reappear before the court.

Defence counsel, Mr. Samuel Kwesi Agyei, prayed the court to grant the women bail, arguing that the prosecution had not concluded its investigations. He added that the accused had already spent several days in lawful custody, learnt their lesson, and would not interfere with investigations since their mobile phones were in police custody.

However, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo opposed the bail application, explaining that investigations were still ongoing. He disclosed that the police had applied to the High Court for authorization to extract videos allegedly made by the accused persons from their mobile phones.

Presiding judge Mrs. Angela Attachie subsequently remanded the two into custody to reappear on Thursday, September 4.

Presenting the facts, the prosecution said on August 6, 2025, Charity and Priscilla hosted a live-streamed discussion on TikTok during which they made offensive remarks about President Mahama. The statements were later disseminated on Charity’s TikTok account, “Abena Birago.”

The accused were later arrested, and a forensic capture of the livestream was secured as evidence.

NDC’s Bernard Bediako wins Akwatia by-election https://www.adomonline.com/ndcs-bernard-bediako-wins-akwatia-by-election/ Tue, 02 Sep 2025 21:56:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574236 Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emerged victorious in the Akwatia by-election, securing a crucial win for the government in one of the year’s most closely contested polls.

The Electoral Commission’s certified results showed Bediako receiving 18,199 votes out of the total valid ballots cast.

His closest rival, Kwame Asumadu of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Progressive Party (LPP) trailed with 82 votes. Of the total ballots cast, 33,819 were valid, and 303 were rejected.

The by-election was triggered by the death of Akwatia’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, earlier this year.

Campaigning in the run-up to the poll was intense, with both the NDC and NPP deploying significant resources and manpower in the constituency.

Voting took place across 119 polling stations on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, with polls officially closing at 5 p.m. Sorting and counting were conducted in the presence of party agents, security personnel, and independent observers.

Bediako’s victory sparked jubilant celebrations among NDC supporters, who filled the streets of Akwatia in song and dance.

Political analysts note that the result is significant, as Akwatia has historically been a swing constituency, alternating between the NPP and NDC. The NDC’s win is being seen as a major boost to the governing party’s confidence ahead of the 2028 general elections.

With this outcome, Bernard Bediako Baidoo becomes the new MP for Akwatia, pledging to continue the work of his predecessor while advancing the government’s development agenda in the constituency.

The Electoral Commission (EC) had expected about 50,000 eligible voters to participate following the death of sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi. However, the election day was marked by isolated incidents of violence and low voter turnout at some centres.

Results from certain polling stations have drawn national attention due to their potential to influence the overall outcome of the by-election.

The contest is fierce between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidate, Solomon Asumadu, and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

In an interview with journalists, the veteran lawmaker argued that development should align with political support.

“We will fix Akwatia roads, and we expect the people to reciprocate that support. I cannot say outright that the roads won’t be fixed if they vote for the NPP, but if I were the President, I wouldn’t have fixed the roads,” Dauda stated.

He reflected on the 2024 general election, noting that the presidential outcome was uncertain at the time. “Back then, we didn’t know who would win between Dr. Bawumia and President Mahama. In the end, the NDC secured over 180 seats, while the NPP had 88. Now, President Mahama is in charge, and he controls the resources of the state,” he said.

Dauda urged Akwatia residents to consider this reality when casting their votes, insisting that supporting the NDC is the surest path to development.

“If the people of Akwatia want development, they should know who is in charge. This is a special election, and it requires special thinking,” he added.

The Akwatia by-election, prompted by the death of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi, has attracted intense attention, with both the NPP and NDC vying for the seat.

Speaking to journalists shortly after casting his ballot on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Baidoo said his assurance stems from feedback received during his campaign.

“As for the win, that is settled. What is left is the margin. Call me in the next two hours and I’ll be able to tell you the figures,” he stated confidently.

Baidoo also commended the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and voters for ensuring a peaceful process.

“The exercise has been very peaceful, and that is what we prayed for. I have visited most of the polling stations, and I am impressed by how the EC officials, the police, and the electorates have conducted themselves,” he said.

More than 50,000 registered voters are casting their ballots across 119 polling centres in Akwatia. The by-election follows the passing of the area’s former Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

The moratorium, which had been in effect since January 10, 2025, was introduced to allow a comprehensive review of Ghana’s land administration system.

Speaking at the inauguration of the reconstituted Lands Commission Board on Tuesday, September 2, President Mahama said the review exposed critical weaknesses in land management that required urgent reforms.

“My government imposed a temporary ban on the sale of state lands to enable a thorough review of contracts. The exercise has revealed valuable insights into our current system and the reforms that are required,” he said.

He added that all future land transactions will now follow a digitally verified process under strict oversight to ensure integrity and restore public confidence.

“The lifting of the ban does not signify a return to business as usual. It signals a new, disciplined era of land management. We are embarking on a reset that prioritizes transparency, fairness, and justice in land administration,” President Mahama declared.

Some young women in Akwatia have openly stated that financial inducements from political parties heavily influence their voting decisions.

Speaking to Accra-based Citi News during the ongoing by-election, they noted that, unlike the 2024 general elections, no money is being distributed by candidates or parties this time.

“During the 2024 election, money came,” one of them said. “But in this by-election, the money is not coming, and the police have also taken over the constituency. We are not getting anything.”

Another added: “We love money, and that is how we have been trained. So we won’t vote if the money doesn’t come.”

The women explained that for many residents, particularly the youth, financial and material benefits often outweigh party manifestos or campaign promises.

“We prioritise money in everything we do,” one emphasized.

The by-election in Akwatia was triggered by the death of sitting Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi in July 2025. The contest is a fierce battle between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Kwame Asumadu and the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured stakeholders of a free and fair process, while the Ghana Police Service has deployed over 5,000 officers to maintain security across the constituency.

He cautioned against retaliation, noting that although both he and Azorka hail from Tamale and hold chieftaincy titles, peace must be maintained.

Tensions flared on Tuesday morning in the Akwatia constituency during the ongoing by-election.

Adom FM/TV’s Chief Jerry Forson reported that disturbances broke out after a group believed to be New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters stormed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) office and pulled down posters of the party’s candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

Eyewitnesses claimed the men acted in a coordinated manner and alleged they were members of a security detail linked to the convoy of Effutu MP and Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Despite heavy police deployment, security personnel struggled to immediately contain the situation. Mr. Afenyo-Markin is yet to officially comment on the incident.

The by-election was necessitated by the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on July 7, 2025. Voters are choosing between the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu and the NDC’s Bernard Bediako Baidoo in what has become a keenly contested two-horse race.

Police have since stepped up visibility across the constituency, mounting checkpoints at strategic locations to prevent further escalation.

The election follows the passing of the late NPP MP, Ernest Kumi, on July 7, which created a parliamentary vacancy.

Akwatia, historically a swing constituency, is regarded as a key battleground and a crucial test for both major parties ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The contest is between the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Solomon Asumadu and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Bernard Baidoo Bediako.

While both candidates remain confident of victory, a survey by Global InfoAnalytics has projected Mr. Bediako as the likely winner.

The poll, conducted between August 27 and 28 with a sample of 2,050 voters, showed Bediako leading with 53% support, compared to Asumadu’s 47%.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has assured of a smooth and transparent process, as the Ghana Police Service deploys 5,500 personnel to maintain law and order.

Next Chief Justice could be removed with ‘flimsy petition’ – Former Dep. AG. warns https://www.adomonline.com/next-chief-justice-could-be-removed-with-flimsy-petition-former-dep-ag-warns/ Mon, 01 Sep 2025 20:03:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573740 Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah has expressed sadness, but little surprise, over President John Dramani Mahama’s decision to remove Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

The action, which took place on September 1, 2025, was described by Mr. Tuah-Yeboah, who served under the Akufo-Addo administration, as an “unholy assault on the independence of the judiciary” that sets a dangerous precedent for the future.

The President acted following the recommendation of an Article 146 Committee, established under Ghana’s Constitution to investigate petitions for the removal of a Chief Justice. A petition filed by citizen Daniel Ofori formed the basis for the inquiry, with the committee ultimately finding “stated misbehaviour.”

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Mr. Tuah-Yeboah warned that the outcome has far-reaching consequences for the judiciary. “I’m sad because this is an unholy assault on the independence of the judiciary. This has far-reaching consequences moving into the future,” he said. “Whoever sits in that office should also be thinking about the future implications. The possibility of flimsy petitions being used to remove you is very high.”

He added that he was not surprised by the development, noting it fulfilled a campaign promise by President Mahama. “This is a clear case where a political actor, before elections, campaigned on the promise to remove a Chief Justice; upon assuming office, had some people file for the removal, and today the result. That’s why I’m sad but not surprised,” he said.

The removal of Chief Justice Torkornoo marks a historic moment in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, highlighting the political tensions that can influence the constitutional process of removing a Superior Court Justice, while also rekindling debates about judicial independence and the checks and balances between Ghana’s executive and judicial arms.

According to residents, Mr. Abanga was returning home from his farm when the attack occurred. His wife, Hawa Mohammed, recounted that gunshots had been heard in the area earlier, and she later received the devastating news of her husband’s death.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, but his lifeless body was discovered along the road leading to his home.

The attack has left residents in shock and raised renewed concerns about the increasing spate of robberies in the area. Locals lamented that this is not an isolated incident, noting that armed robbery attacks have become more frequent in the community.

Residents are appealing to the Ghana Police Service to intensify security by mounting checkpoints and increasing patrols to safeguard lives and property.

NPP will remove Mahama’s Chief Justice if voted into power – Anyaa-Sowutuom MP [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-will-remove-mahamas-chief-justice-if-voted-into-power-anyaa-sowutuom-mp-audio/ Mon, 01 Sep 2025 17:07:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573719 The Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Emmanuel Tobbin, has strongly criticised President John Mahama over the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, warning that a future New Patriotic Party (NPP) government could respond in kind.

Speaking in an interview on Ekosii Sen on Asempa FM, Mr. Tobbin described the development as a dangerous precedent that undermines judicial independence and erodes public confidence in the rule of law.

“It is surprising how Mahama is ruling this country. Things are not going well. The only institution Ghanaians believed could deliver fairness has now been tampered with by removing the Chief Justice,” he lamented.

The Anyaa-Sowutuom legislator alleged that the allegations levelled against Justice Torkornoo were “fraudulent” and politically motivated. He argued that the decision could push the country backwards rather than forward.

“When the NPP comes to power by God’s will, whoever President Mahama appoints as Chief Justice, we will also remove the person. Is that how we want to move forward as a country or backwards?” he questioned.

Mr. Tobbin further warned that the decision could create fear within the judiciary, making judges apprehensive about presiding over sensitive cases.

“Now judges may sit in fear because if a ruling does not go in the President’s favour, they risk being removed,” he added.

Chief Justice Torkornoo was removed from office on September 1, 2025, after a Committee of Inquiry chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Pwamang recommended her dismissal for stated misbehaviour.

The Committee was established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution following a petition against her after her suspension on April 22, 2025.

President Mahama, bound by Article 146(9), accepted the Committee’s recommendation, making Justice Torkornoo the first Chief Justice to be removed under this constitutional provision.

The decision has divided opinion, with government officials defending the process as due diligence, while opposition figures argue it undermines judicial independence.

President John Mahama has, with immediate effect, dismissed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, on Monday, September 1, 2025.

The statement explained that the decision follows the receipt of the report from the committee instituted to probe three petitions seeking her removal.

President Mahama on April 22, 2025, suspended Justice Torkornoo in accordance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution.

The decision followed consultation with the Council of State, which determined that a prima facie case had been established in relation to three petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.

The President has consequently established a committee, in compliance with Article 146(6) of the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, to look into the petitions which have been referred to them.

The five-member committee is chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court.

Other members include Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court; Daniel Yaw Domelevo, former Auditor-General; Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces; and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, Associate Professor at the University of Ghana.

The committee presented its report to the President on Monday, September 1.

The embattled Chief Justice before her removal, was challenging the suspension at the ECOWAS court, amidst calls from the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), the Bar Council of England and Wales, and the Commonwealth Lawyers Association for her reinstatement.

Mahama presented with committee report on suspended Chief Justice Torkornoo petitions https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-presented-with-committee-report-on-suspended-chief-justice-torkornoo-petitions/ Mon, 01 Sep 2025 12:45:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573601 The Chairman of the Article 146 Committee of Inquiry has formally presented its first report on petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to President John Mahama.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony at the Jubilee House, the Chairman, Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, recalled that in March this year, three separate petitions were submitted to the President under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, requesting the removal of the Chief Justice.

The petitions were subsequently referred to the Committee in line with constitutional provisions.

The Committee, inaugurated on May 15, 2025, held its proceedings in camera, as required by law. It received testimony from Daniel Ofori, the first petitioner, and thirteen witnesses.

The Chief Justice mounted a strong defence, personally testifying before the panel and calling twelve witnesses, including expert witnesses.

In all, about 10,000 pages of documentary evidence were tendered by both parties, with each side represented by four lawyers.

The Chairman stressed that the Committee’s deliberations were conducted with fairness, noting that “after critical and dispassionate examination and assessment of all the evidence… we have, without fear or favour, arrived at a recommendation on the first petition.”

The sealed recommendation was then handed over to the President.

The Committee further disclosed that the second petitioner, together with the Chief Justice, requested an adjournment in respect of the second petition.

That request was granted, and reports on the second and third petitions are expected in due course.

The Committee stressed that while the hearings were held in camera, the process was not in secret, underscoring the transparency of its work within the confines of constitutional requirements.

Nana B slams NDC executives over attire at Ernest Kumi’s one-week observance [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/nana-b-slams-ndc-executives-over-attire-at-ernest-kumis-one-week-observance-audio/ Mon, 01 Sep 2025 11:40:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573552 The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticised the conduct of National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives during the one-week observance of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

According to him, the NDC delegation, led by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, appeared in outfits he described as “inappropriate” for a solemn occasion of mourning.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana Boakye expressed disappointment, stressing that cultural and social norms demand that mourners dress in ways that reflect respect and solidarity with the bereaved family.

He specifically cited Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, who wore brown, and NDC parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Baidoo, who appeared in pink or white. He also pointed out that former Deputy Sports Minister and NDC National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, attended in camouflage trousers and a T-shirt.

“Were they serious about attending a funeral? When they went to the funeral of Omane Boamah and the victims of the helicopter crash, were they in brown? This was not a show of respect,” Nana Boakye remarked.

He further alleged that Asiedu Nketia was seen making gestures “as if to cut off someone’s head,” which drew protests from some mourners who felt disrespected by the delegation’s conduct.

Nana Boakye argued that the appearance of the NDC executives seemed unplanned, “as if they had suddenly remembered to pass through the funeral grounds to avoid backlash.”

He added that when the NPP attended the funeral of the helicopter crash victims, which included five NDC members, they observed full decorum and dressed appropriately.

While stressing that no one physically attacked the NDC delegation, the NPP National Organiser maintained that their behaviour and choice of attire were “highly inappropriate” for the one-week observation of a former Member of Parliament.

He noted that the conduct of some NDC executives fell short of this standard, which he considered disrespectful to the memory of the deceased and insensitive to the grieving family.

The one-week observance, held at Akyem Wenchi in the Eastern Region, drew mourners from across the political divide, as well as friends and family members, who gathered to honour his memory.

Meanwhile, a by-election to choose his successor has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

The Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Emmanuel Tobbin, has confirmed that the son of traditional leader Nuumo Ofori was among the victims killed during Saturday’s violent Homowo clashes between Anyaa-Sowutuom and Omanjor.

In a statement, the Police identified the deceased as Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah, also known as Nii Kwashiebu, Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo. Four others sustained injuries, including Enoch Amevor, who has since been treated and discharged. Other victims—Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey, popularly called Nii Obrafour—are currently receiving care at facilities including Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Tobbin revealed that the chief’s son was shot multiple times after he was sent to mediate a misunderstanding over the sprinkling of kpokpoi near a boundary at Mensah Addo.

However, it is not immediately clear which of the trio of deceased is Nuumo Ofori’s son, as the lawmaker did not reveal his name.

“He was shot about ten times, from the head to other parts of the body. This is no small matter because Nuumo Ofori is not an ordinary chief. The entire community witnessed what happened,” the MP said.

He noted that tensions remain high, with nearly 200 young men converging at Nuumo Ofori’s palace on Sunday, their mood strongly suggesting thoughts of retaliation.

He, however, appealed to the community to remain calm as police investigations continue, noting that efforts are underway to engage leaders from both sides to restore peace.

According to him, the violence erupted on Friday, August 30, 2025, when his team was confronted while on their way to sprinkle kpokpoi.

“We were on our way to sprinkle kpokpoi when a group blocked our path. As we tried to find out why, they started shooting. I asked my people to retreat, but some were attacked from behind,” he told Adom News.

He further alleged that festival-goers from nearby communities, including Pokuase, were also assaulted on their way home.

“From pictures and eyewitness reports, four people have died and several others are injured. The police have taken the bodies,” he added.

Calling on President John Dramani Mahama, the Inspector-General of Police, and the Minister for the Interior, Nii Ayitey Tackie I demanded a full investigation to restore peace and deliver justice.

Meanwhile, Naa Omanyiaba, Queen Mother under the Ga Paramount Stool, condemned the killings as a “stain on Ga tradition,” stressing that such violence dishonors the spirit of Homowo.

Police confirm casualties, link clashes to chieftaincy dispute

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service confirmed three deaths—Abubakar Ramadan Sarbah (Nii Kwashiebu), Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan, and Joseph Shaibu Dodoo. The bodies have been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Four others sustained injuries, including gunshot and machete wounds. While Enoch Amevor has been treated and discharged, Samuel Adjei, Nathaniel Doku, and Frederick Lartey (Nii Obrafour) remain on admission at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Ridge Hospital.

Police indicated that the clashes stemmed from a dispute between supporters of two rival chiefs during the kpokpoi rites, which escalated into gunfire and brutal attacks.

Security reinforcements and warning to traditional leaders

To prevent further disturbances, additional security personnel have been deployed to Sowutuom, Anyaa, and Olebu.

The Accra Regional Police Command has also warned traditional leaders and their supporters to strictly adhere to agreed security protocols during festivals.

“Any act that could incite violence will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” the statement stressed.

Investigations and intelligence-led operations are ongoing to track down all those involved.

Legal counsel for evangelist Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, has dismissed claims linking the late lawyer Ali Adam to her legal team.

In a statement, Richard Asare Baffour clarified that although Ali Adam was a respected colleague at his firm, he never worked on matters relating to Agradaa’s case.

He urged the public to desist from speculations connecting the lawyer’s sudden passing to his professional work.

“It is with great sadness that I confirm the passing of our colleague, Ali Adam, who was a valued member of our law firm. However, I want to emphasize that Ali was not involved in the team that worked on Mama Pat’s case,” he stated.

According to him, Ali Adam passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning, just hours after they had spoken on the phone.

He recounted that the late lawyer had called around 8:00 a.m. to share the good news that some interns from the firm had passed their final exams and would soon be called to the bar.

The two had scheduled to meet at 10:00 a.m. to review documents, but shortly after, news of his death reached him.

Family sources revealed that Ali Adam collapsed while having breakfast and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

As a devoted Muslim, he was buried the same day in accordance with Islamic tradition.

Mr. Baffour appealed for empathy in public commentary, noting that Ali Adam left behind a young family.

“Death is inevitable, and we will all face it someday. Let us be kind and respectful in our remarks as we mourn him,” he added.

The call was made when members of the council visited the site to perform final cleansing rituals for those who assisted in retrieving the remains of the eight military officers who lost their lives in the crash.

Speaking to Adom News correspondent Isaac K. Normanyo, the Adansi Akyeamehene, Nana Kusi Anowuo, explained that the rituals were necessary to protect those who took part in the recovery exercise from any spiritual consequences.

He emphasized that beyond its spiritual and cultural significance, the site carries historic value and should be preserved as a national heritage site.

“A monument should be erected here to honor the memory of the fallen eight and to serve as a reminder for future generations,” Nana Anowuo stated.

The council believes developing the site into a tourist centre will not only preserve history but also contribute to cultural tourism and local economic growth.

Chief of Staff to vet all Ghanaian delegations to 80th UNGA – Presidency https://www.adomonline.com/chief-of-staff-to-vet-all-ghanaian-delegations-to-80th-unga-presidency/ Sat, 30 Aug 2025 19:07:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573141 The government has issued strict directives on Ghana’s participation in the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

According to a statement from the Office of the President, no government official—including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, CEOs of state institutions, and political appointees—may attend the UNGA or any related engagements without prior written approval from the Chief of Staff.

The directive follows a recent Cabinet decision announced by President John Dramani Mahama on foreign travel and participation in international events.

The Chief of Staff stressed that only those formally cleared by the government will be permitted to represent Ghana at the UNGA, including its side meetings, panels, receptions, and bilateral discussions.

Key provisions of the directive are as follows:

  • Approval Requirement: All invitations—whether from the UN, development partners, NGOs, think tanks, or private organisations—must first receive written clearance from the Chief of Staff before being accepted.

  • Suspension of Pending Invitations: Invitations already accepted or awaiting response are considered void unless re-authorised by the Chief of Staff.

  • Submission Process: Requests to attend must be submitted in writing through the relevant supervising Minister to the Chief of Staff.

In the statement dated August 30, presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu explained that the measure is designed to ensure a lean and cost-effective national presence at the UNGA, consistent with the President’s “Resetting Ghana” agenda.

He further warned that any official who disregards the directive will be sanctioned in line with the Code of Conduct for Public Office Holders.

Galamsey pits claim 22 lives in Central Region – NADMO https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-pits-claim-22-lives-in-central-region-nadmo/ Sat, 30 Aug 2025 18:06:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2573108 More than 22 people have drowned in abandoned illegal mining pits in the Central Region over the past seven months, according to the Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Kwesi Dawood.

He said the deserted pits had claimed the lives of both illegal miners, commonly called galamseyers, and innocent individuals, particularly women and children with no ties to mining activities.

Describing the situation as both “alarming” and “heartbreaking,” Mr Dawood warned that the actual figures could be higher due to underreporting.

He made the disclosure at a media briefing following a Regional Security Council meeting, which also launched a task force to reclaim illegal mining sites across all mining districts in the region.

The task force — which will operate in Assin North, Assin Central, Upper Denkyira East and West, Twifo Ati-Morkwa, Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira, and the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipality — comprises security agencies, NADMO, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Minerals Commission, miners, and the media.

Mr Dawood said the initiative was designed to address the environmental destruction and safety hazards caused by illegal mining.

It also forms part of the government’s broader plan to convert degraded galamsey sites into productive agricultural land and tree plantations — a project spearheaded by the Regional Minister, Ekow Payin Okyere Eduamoah.

As part of the effort, heavy machinery has been deployed, while free crop seedlings will be distributed to communities to encourage farming on reclaimed lands, thereby providing alternative livelihoods.

“This initiative includes implementing our ‘Tree for Life’ reforestation policy, aimed at cultivating cash crops such as cocoa, palm, and rubber on rehabilitated sites,” he explained.

Mr Dawood urged illegal miners to abandon their harmful activities and join the reclamation drive to restore farmlands and protect national food security.

Representing the Regional Minister, Mr Abdullah Amoh called on miners to support the initiative as community engagement and mapping of degraded areas continue.

He stressed that reclaiming sites through reforestation, soil rehabilitation, and water purification would restore natural habitats and secure livelihoods for communities dependent on healthy ecosystems.

He added that the projects would help reduce flooding risks, water contamination, and health problems linked to toxic exposure.

Mr Amoh assured that the government would strengthen enforcement against illegal mining, allocate resources for sustainable land restoration, and roll out public awareness campaigns to discourage galamsey while encouraging community participation in environmental protection.

He underscored the government’s commitment, stating:

“Addressing the aftermath of illegal mining is vital for ecological balance, economic sustainability, and the well-being of present and future generations. Without coordinated action to reclaim degraded sites, the environmental and social costs will continue to rise.”

Adu Boahene trial: 83 pages of defence evidence missing – Atta Akyea https://www.adomonline.com/adu-boahene-trial-83-pages-of-defence-evidence-missing-atta-akyea/ Sat, 30 Aug 2025 11:24:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572923 The legal battle against former Director General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Charles Adu Boahene, has taken a dramatic turn, with his legal team appealing a court decision after alleging that 83 pages of a crucial bank statement were missing from the prosecution’s documents.

The lawyer for the accused, Samuel Atta-Akyea, has accused the prosecution of a “deficit of evidence” and said the judge is blocking their access to vital information needed for their defence.

The case, which has garnered national attention, sees Adu Boahene, his wife, and two others facing 11 charges, including stealing, money laundering of GH¢49.1 million in state funds, willfully causing financial loss to the state, and abuse of public office.

The prosecution, led by the Attorney-General’s Department, alleges that Adu Boahene, while serving as the Director of the NSB, illegally transferred funds from a state-owned account to a private company.

In an interview on JoyNews on Friday, August 29, Mr Atta-Akyea expressed his frustration with the court’s proceedings.

“The Attorney General withheld about 83 pages of a bank statement that the Attorney General has filed before the court,” he said. “So you could see a deficit of evidence by what the Attorney General filed before the court.”

According to Atta-Akyea, the defence team immediately raised an objection, questioning the whereabouts of the remaining pages.

He claims the judge “blocked it,” preventing the prosecution from providing the missing documents.

“The judge didn’t want them to bring it. This is where we are, fact. These are all facts if you are a journalist following this story and that’s why we’ve appealed the decision of the judge that the judge should not block evidence that the accused persons require to prepare their defence and even use those pieces of evidence to cross-examine the witnesses who are being called,” Atta-Akyea stated.

The defence’s appeal highlights a core tenet of criminal law in Ghana, where the accused has a constitutional right to a fair trial, including access to all evidence that is both inculpatory (points to guilt) and exculpatory (points to innocence).

Mr Atta-Akyea maintains that the missing bank statement pages could hold the key to exonerating his client, or at the very least, allow for a robust cross-examination of the prosecution’s witnesses.

The dispute over the bank statements is not the first time the defence has raised issues with the prosecution’s disclosures.

In an earlier ruling, the court partially granted a motion filed by Atta-Akyea for further disclosures, ordering the Ghana Police Service to provide the defence with information on a BMW vehicle linked to the case.

The prosecution had alleged that Adu Boahene had not declared the vehicle as an asset and had imported it, claims the defence has denied.

But the Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai, has rejected the claims.

In a post on X on Thursday, August 28, he dismissed suggestions that the Attorney-General’s office had lost evidence in the Republic v Adu-Boahene trial.

“The Attorney-General’s office has not lost any evidence regarding the ongoing Republic v Adu-Boahene criminal trial,” he wrote.

According to him, all relevant documents were intact and had been duly filed before the court.

“As of June 18, we had filed all the documents which we intend to rely on to prove the charges against the four accused persons in the case.

“The documents include contracts of sale, bank wire transfer records, bank account statements, company registration documents, property ownership records and purchase receipts, INTERPOL stolen vehicle records, investigative caution statements and charge statements of each accused person, records of asset non-declaration, a flow chart of money movements through a complex web of bank accounts, and testimonies of our three witnesses.”

In a press release, the Ghana Education Service (GES) announced that candidates can log in with their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) Index Number and Date of Birth to review and confirm their selected schools.

GES Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, stated on Friday, August 29, that the portal will remain open until September 8, 2025, giving candidates limited time to complete the exercise.

The Service emphasized that the process is strictly for review and confirmation, and no changes can be made to the selected schools.

A technical team and a 24-hour support unit are on standby to assist candidates, parents, and guardians with any further concerns.

GES expressed appreciation to the public for their patience and cooperation during the brief disruption.

According to NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande, the team was at the Akyem Wenchi funeral grounds to sympathize with the bereaved family when sections of the crowd turned on them.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, he explained that while some mourners warmly received the delegation, others began booing and allegedly attempted to physically attack them.

“The National Chairman, myself, the National Organiser, the Deputy Communications Officer, and Regional Executives were present. Unfortunately, the overwhelming reception given to our chairman provoked some individuals who then sought to launch an attack,” Gbande claimed.

He described the incident as a worrying sign of possible violence ahead of the Akwatia by-election slated for September 2, 2025.

Gbande, however, acknowledged that Eastern Regional NPP Chairman Jeff Konadu Addo, together with some traditional leaders, later approached the NDC delegation to apologize for the development.

A video of the confrontation has since circulated on social media.

Visibly angry women attempted to physically assault the NDC chairman and his security detail.

The one-week observance, themed My Hero Lives On, drew family members, friends, colleagues, political figures, and community members who gathered to mourn the late lawmaker.

Mr. Kumi passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness at the age of 40. He is survived by his wife and children.

Adu-Boahene Trial: AG withholding key documents – Atta-Akyea alleges https://www.adomonline.com/adu-boahene-trial-ag-withholding-key-documents-atta-akyea-alleges/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 15:48:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572746 Lawyer for former Director of the National Signal Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, Samuel Atta-Akyea, has accused the Attorney-General (AG) of withholding vital documents in the ongoing trial.

Speaking on JoyNews Today, Mr. Atta-Akyea alleged that the AG had been “selective” in providing information crucial to the defence.

“The AG has been selective in furnishing us with the documents it wants to file. In fact, we brought it to the attention of the judge that in a very consequential bank account, they’ve decided not to include the full volume of the bank account,” he said.

According to him, the missing details could prove his client’s innocence. “What is exculpatory of Adu-Boahene and why the AG should give it to us… The evidence that will aid the accused persons to conduct their case… should be given to them,” he stressed.

The defence further argued that while the prosecution alleged funds were withdrawn from a private B&C account to purchase properties in Kumasi and London, no supporting details had been disclosed.

“So give us when this purchase took place, let us have who owned the property, the vendor, when was it sold, and how much. They couldn’t give it,” he added.

Mr. Atta-Akyea insisted that fair trial standards require full disclosure by the prosecution.

“The fair trial requirement is that you shouldn’t withhold information that should aid the innocence of the accused person. Because the AG is not a prosecutor; an AG is supposed to hold the scales of justice even,” he noted, describing the alleged conduct as “unprofessional.”

He also criticised recent public comments by Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai on the matter as “unfortunate” and undermining due process.

Meanwhile, Justice Srem Sai has firmly rejected the claims. In a post on X on Thursday, August 28, he dismissed suggestions that the Attorney-General’s office had lost evidence in the Republic v. Adu-Boahene trial.

“The Attorney-General’s office has not lost any evidence regarding the ongoing Republic v. Adu-Boahene criminal trial,” he wrote.

According to him, all relevant documents remain intact and have been duly filed before the court.

“As of June 18, we had filed all the documents that we intend to rely on to prove the charges against the four accused persons in the case.

NSS Scandal: Former D-G was posted as volunteer and received GH¢ 8.2m – Audit report https://www.adomonline.com/nss-scandal-former-d-g-was-posted-as-volunteer-and-received-gh%c2%a2-8-2m-audit-report/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 14:43:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572654 Findings from the technical and forensic audit of the National Service Authority (NSA), seen exclusively by The Fourth Estate, indicate that the former Director-General of the NSA, Osei Assibey Antwi, while at post as D-G, was at the same time posted as a volunteer within the NSA.

This was during the 2022/2023 service year, about a year after he took office as the head of the NSA (then NSS).

Mr Assibey Antwi is said to have been designated a volunteer, assigned an EZWICH card with the number 1177042059, and posted to the Greater Accra region after his registration. But auditors say the payroll records indicate he was assigned to the Kumawu Farms, a 200-acre farmland in the Ashanti Region. The Kumawu Farms, described in media reports as a mixed commercial farming project for service personnel, is an initiative Mr Assibey Antwi’s NSA administration is reported to have commenced when they came into office.

According to the report, Mr Assibey Antwi was paid GH¢516,000 every month for 16 months, totalling GH¢8,256,000. At the current national service allowance of GH¢715.57, the amount paid to Mr Assibey every month could have paid the allowance of 721 service personnel.

The findings in the audit report align with a previous statement by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, when he provided an update on the investigations by Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) into financial malfeasance at the National Service Authority on Friday, June 13.

“In the 2022/2023 service year, a total of eight million, two hundred and fifty-six thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢8,256,000.00) was deposited into EZWICH account number 1177042059, which is registered in the name of suspect Osei Assibey. Investigations showed that he personally received these funds,” Dr Ayine said.

He added that when his house was searched during the investigations, the EZWICH card was found.

Background

In November 2024, The Fourth Estate concluded its months-long investigations into alleged malpractices at the NSA. The investigations revealed the presence of thousands of ghost names in the database of the NSA, which potentially was causing the nation to lose millions of cedis through what is famously known in Ghana as ‘ghost names’.

But before publication of the report, the leadership of the NSA went to court on the blindside of The Fourth Estate to secure an injunction against the publication of the story.

Following the development, the MFWA, which runs The Fourth Estate project, submitted a petition to the Office of the Special Prosecutor. A similar petition was subsequently submitted to the then newly constituted Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

On June 13, 2025, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, announced to the nation that investigations had been conducted and some former executives of the NSA, alongside other persons, were going to be prosecuted for fraudulent practices at the NSA that had cost the nation over 548 million. In his presentation to the nation, the Attorney-General extoled The Fourth Estate for what he described as the foundational work that had aided his investigations.

“The now-famous National Service scandal, which was first uncovered by The Fourth Estate through its investigative journalism, formed a major plank of the oral report. My office is extremely grateful to The Fourth Estate for the excellent foundational work that they did,” Dr Ayine said.

Eight convicted, fined GH¢6,000 each over Ablekuma North by-election violence https://www.adomonline.com/eight-convicted-fined-gh%c2%a26000-each-over-ablekuma-north-by-election-violence/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 12:08:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572618 Eight men who participated in violent disturbances during the Ablekuma North by-election have been convicted and sentenced by the Accra Circuit Court.

Each was ordered to pay a fine of 500 penalty units (GH¢6,000) or, in default, serve 24 months in prison.

The convicts — Mohammed Abubakari, Tijani Mahmudu, Prince Dzakpasu, Anas Mohammed, Mohammed Hamda, Darko Otibu Samuel, Musah Muntari, and Ali Saeed (alias Bomba) — appeared before His Honour Isaac Addo on Friday, August 29, 2025, and pleaded guilty to the charges.

Prosecutors told the court the incident occurred at the Methodist Church Polling Station during the by-election. The victims were Hawa Mavis Koomson, former Minister of State and ex-MP for Awutu Senya East; Majeed Mohammed Saana, a trader; and Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei, Deputy Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While the victims were monitoring proceedings, the accused launched an unprovoked attack, first assaulting Mrs Koomson and Mr Saana before turning on Mr Kwei. Videos of the assault went viral online.

They were charged with conspiracy to commit assault and three counts of assault, contrary to Sections 23(1) and 84 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The case, which began on Monday, August 26, was fast-tracked after all eight admitted their roles in the violence, leading to their conviction and sentencing.

Global InfoAnalytics tips NDC’s Bernard Baidoo to win Akwatia by-election https://www.adomonline.com/global-infoanalytics-tips-ndcs-bernard-baidoo-to-win-akwatia-by-election/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 10:18:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572467 A new survey by Global InfoAnalytics projects a win for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Baidoo, in the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Conducted between August 27 and 28 with a sample of 2,050 voters, the poll shows Bediako leading with 53% support, ahead of his main rival, Solomon K. Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 47%.

The by-election follows the passing of the late NPP MP, Ernest Kumi, on July 7, which created the parliamentary vacancy. Akwatia, historically a swing constituency, is seen as a key battleground and a test of both parties ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The survey also indicated that voter preferences are influenced by issues such as unemployment, economic hardship, and limited access to social amenities, in addition to party loyalty.

Global InfoAnalytics, however, warned that undecided voters could play a decisive role, potentially solidifying Bediako’s lead or narrowing the gap in favour of Asumadu.

Miracles Aboagye challenges convictions in Ablekuma North re-run violence  https://www.adomonline.com/miracles-aboagye-challenges-convictions-in-ablekuma-north-re-run-violence/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 10:04:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572460 New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has raised concerns over the recent conviction of eight individuals linked to the Ablekuma North constituency re-run violence.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s “Badwam,” Mr. Aboagye questioned the process that led to the convictions, particularly the absence of victim involvement in identifying the perpetrators.

“Who exactly was arrested? Were the victims invited to court to identify those who attacked them? We have videos and pictures of the attackers, yet the convictions were announced without clarity on who exactly was punished,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Bawumia campaign team noted that while he respects the authority of the Ghana Police Service, proper identification of suspects by the victims should have been central to the process.

“The victims should have been invited for identification. The attack involved a mob, but not everyone in the crowd assaulted people. Arresting individuals linked to the incident without victim confirmation does not necessarily mean they are the real attackers,” he explained.

Mr. Aboagye warned that such procedural gaps risk undermining public trust.

“Such actions don’t help, and I believe the police can improve,” he added.

Despite his concerns, he reaffirmed his respect for both the police and the clergy, emphasizing that these are institutions whose authority he does not take lightly.

Illegal miner remanded for threatening security agencies with firearm https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-miner-remanded-for-threatening-security-agencies-with-firearm/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 07:18:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572353 The Juaboso Magistrate Court has remanded into police custody one Evans Amoako, popularly known as Sasso, after he was arrested for brandishing a firearm in a viral video and issuing threats against security agencies.

On Sunday, August 24, 2025, a video circulated on social media capturing Amoako and some unidentified accomplices issuing threats to security personnel.

In the footage, Amoako, holding a locally manufactured pistol loaded with live ammunition, warned that any security personnel who attempted to arrest them at their illegal mining site would be shot and killed.

According to police sources, the accused was arrested on August 26, 2025, at Sefwi Metemano in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.

He was arraigned before the Juaboso Magistrate Court, where the prosecution pressed two charges against him: causing fear and panic among security agencies in the performance of their lawful duties, and possession of a firearm without lawful authority.

The prosecution prayed the court to refuse bail, arguing that the accused could interfere with ongoing investigations, including efforts to apprehend his accomplices and retrieve the firearm used in the video.

When asked to respond to the charges, Amoako pleaded guilty and admitted ownership of the firearm. He told the court that he only displayed the weapon “for play,” and insisted he did not personally upload the video on TikTok. He pleaded for bail, promising to cooperate with the investigation.

The magistrate, however, declined the bail application, citing the seriousness of the offence and the risk of the accused interfering with investigations.

The court remanded Amoako into police custody and adjourned the case to September 15, 2025, for further hearing.

Meanwhile, illegal mining activities continue to rise in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.

Deputy AG reacts to claims of missing evidence in Adu-Boahene’s case https://www.adomonline.com/deputy-ag-reacts-to-claims-of-missing-evidence-in-adu-boahenes-case/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 07:09:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572335 Deputy Attorney-General, Justice Srem Sai, has dismissed claims that the Attorney-General’s office has misplaced evidence in the ongoing criminal case involving former National Signals Bureau (NSB) Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene.

In a statement shared on X, Mr. Srem Sai stressed that all relevant materials remain intact and had already been filed with the court.

“The Attorney-General’s office has not lost any evidence regarding the ongoing Republic v Adu-Boahene criminal trial,” he clarified.

He explained that the prosecution had submitted comprehensive documentation, including contracts of sale, bank transfer records, account statements, company registration papers, property ownership documents, purchase receipts, INTERPOL stolen vehicle reports, investigative caution and charge statements, records of undeclared assets, a flow chart tracing money movements through several accounts, as well as testimonies from three witnesses.

According to him, certified copies of these documents had also been served on the accused persons.

“Court-certified copies of each of these documents have been duly served on each of the accused persons. So, it is not even realistic that the documents could be lost so as to jeopardise the prosecution of the case,” he said.

On the status of proceedings, the Deputy AG confirmed that the trial had already made progress before the judiciary went on its annual break.

“Before the start of the legal vacation on July 31, the first of our three prosecution witnesses had completed testifying and had been cross-examined by the lawyers of three of the four accused persons,” he disclosed.

He indicated that the trial will continue in October once the courts resume sitting after the legal vacation.

Mr. Adu-Boahene, his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng, Mildred Donkor, and a fourth accused person are facing trial for allegedly embezzling GH¢49 million in state funds and using the proceeds to acquire properties. The Attorney-General’s office has not lost any evidence regarding the ongoing Republic v Adu-Boahene criminal trial.

According to the Savannah Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mahama Zakaria, six passengers were rescued while several others remain unaccounted for.

“Our immediate concern is to save lives and recover those still missing,” Mr. Zakaria explained.

Authorities cautioned that the casualty figure could rise as many displaced residents remain stranded at Dinie, waiting for safe passage.

The White Volta has witnessed frequent boat mishaps over the years, often blamed on overloading, poor safety practices, and the absence of life jackets.

Ridge Hospital Incident: Staff testimonies show no physical assault – Health Ministry https://www.adomonline.com/ridge-hospital-incident-staff-testimonies-show-no-physical-assault-health-ministry/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 16:18:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572215 The Ministry of Health has clarified that the committee set up to investigate the alleged assault of a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) found no evidence of physical assault, though it confirmed incidents of verbal abuse and threats.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, said the committee was tasked with examining what caused delays in service delivery on the day of the incident, the adequacy of security arrangements, and whether the full complement of health workers was present.

He noted that the committee relied on CCTV footage, viral videos, medical reports, and testimonies from doctors and nurses present at the time.

“None of the staff interviewed said they witnessed a physical assault on the nurse, identified as Rejoice Tsotso Bortei. The medical report showed that she did not suffer any fracture. She was given painkillers, advised to rest, and offered psychological support. These were administered on Monday, August 18, and she was subsequently treated and discharged,” Goodman stated.

The alleged incident, which involved a confrontation with a patient relative, Mr. Ralph St. Williams, sparked public outrage earlier this month.

The Greater Accra chapter of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) condemned the alleged attack, insisting medical findings had recorded multiple bruises and swelling.

But the Ministry rejected suggestions that the committee overlooked crucial testimonies, insisting the probe was comprehensive and inclusive.

“We spoke to everybody, including the doctor who assessed her. This committee’s work cannot be rubbished,” Goodman said.

The Ministry has pledged to implement the committee’s recommendations, which include strengthening security and addressing systemic challenges at Ridge Hospital to prevent future confrontations between staff and patients’ relatives.

Addai-Nimoh withdraws from NPP flagbearer race, cites “unhealthy” fees https://www.adomonline.com/addai-nimoh-withdraws-from-npp-flagbearer-race-cites-unhealthy-fees/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 15:33:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572203 Former Mampong Member of Parliament (MP), Francis Addai-Nimoh, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) upcoming flagbearer contest, describing the financial demands imposed on aspirants as “unreasonable and unhealthy.”

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Mr. Addai-Nimoh expressed concern over what he termed the growing monetisation of internal party elections.

He revealed that the total cost imposed on aspirants for the 2026 presidential primaries amounted to about GH₵4.6 million, excluding campaign expenses.

“The nomination forms alone cost GH₵100,000, the filing fee is GH₵500,000, and now a new development fund fee of GH₵4 million has been introduced. We have never had anything called a development fee before,” he lamented.

Comparing the figures to previous years, he recalled that in 2014 aspirants paid GH₵10,000 for forms and GH₵75,000 for filing, while in 2023 the cost rose to GH₵50,000 and GH₵300,000 respectively.

“What has changed now for us to pay such an outrageous amount?” he asked.

The former lawmaker argued that such exorbitant requirements put undue pressure on aspirants and undermine the party’s values of inclusiveness and fair competition.

He stressed that policies and vision should take precedence over financial power.

“When I considered all these things, I realised it is not good. We are all in this to build the party and the nation, but if we want to monetise it, it is not in our best interest,” he explained.

Mr. Addai-Nimoh justified his withdrawal as a matter of principle, warning that excessive financial barriers risk stifling competition and silencing candidates who may not have deep pockets but possess innovative ideas.

The NPP presidential primary is scheduled for January 31, 2026, with several aspirants still vying to succeed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s next flagbearer.

This is not the first time Addai-Nimoh has contested the flagbearer race. In 2014, he entered the race ahead of the 2016 elections but was eliminated in the early stages. He returned in 2023 to contest the primaries to succeed President Akufo-Addo but failed to advance past the super delegates’ stage.

His latest withdrawal highlights growing concerns within the NPP about the rising cost of participation in internal contests.

“The party must not place financial barriers above vision. If we want to monetise everything, it will not serve our best interest,” Addai-Nimoh cautioned.
