The GBA’s position follows resolutions from its National Executive Council at its recent mid-year conference, where it declared the suspension unconstitutional.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, GBA Public Relations Officer Saviour Kudze emphasized the need for clarity in the legal process.

According to him, the potential legal move is crucial to establish clear guidelines for the future.

He explained that the court action would seek judicial interpretation to prevent the arbitrary use of executive power in such matters.

The Association argues that President Mahama’s suspension of the Chief Justice violates Article 296 of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates published regulations for the exercise of discretionary powers.

The GBA maintains that the absence of such rules renders the suspension unlawful.

However, Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai has dismissed the GBA’s stance.

“We are convinced that our position is the right one. We don’t know whether the GBA will gather the confidence and courage to proceed to court on something like this,” he said on Joy FM’s Newsnite.

He further explained that the failure to publish the regulations does not prevent the President from exercising his discretion.

“The failure or inability to publish a CI in respect of discretionary power does not prevent the President from exercising it at all.”

Suspend ‘Thank You Tour’ – Mpiani warns NPP https://www.adomonline.com/suspend-thank-you-tour-mpiani-warns-npp/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 17:19:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530096 Former Chief of Staff, Kwadwo Mpiani, has criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing ‘Thank You tour’, calling for it to be suspended immediately.

He argued that the tour is ill-timed and unhelpful in the aftermath of the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Tuesday, April 29, Mr. Mpiani described the tour as a “misplaced priority” and urged party leaders to shift their focus towards internal reflection and addressing the issues that contributed to the electoral loss.

“There is a need to suspend the ‘Thank You’ tour,” he said. “What is happening is not good for the party. The NPP must take a step back, go indoors, and find a way out of this mess.”

Mr. Mpiani clarified that, as he is not a member of the party’s National Council, he is unaware of the reasons behind the decision to embark on the tour. Nevertheless, he questioned its timing and warned that it might deepen internal divisions.

“Maybe if I had been there, I would have given them my advice earlier. But I can’t fault them without knowing the reasons behind the decision. Still, I believe it was the wrong move,” he stated.

He continued, “They should suspend the ongoing ‘Thank You’ tour, get back indoors, look at the issues, and find a better way to approach the members.”

Dr. Bawumia, the 2024 flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has commenced a ‘Thank You tour’ following the party’s landslide defeat in the 2024 general elections.

According to the party, the tour forms part of efforts to rebuild and re-energise the party ahead of the 2028 elections, while also appreciating the contributions of party members during the last campaign.

The tour comes on the heels of a report by a 12-member committee chaired by former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye, which was established to investigate the reasons behind the party’s electoral loss.

The party has declined to make the contents of the report public.

MoMo vendor shot dead during robbery operation in Aflao https://www.adomonline.com/momo-vendor-shot-dead-during-robbery-operation-in-aflao/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 10:54:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529900 A mobile money agent tragically lost his life on Monday, 28th April, following an armed robbery by unknown assailants at Aflao in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.

According to Sylvia Awumey, a journalist based in Ketu South, the incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday.

She reported that the deceased, Christopher Ahordo, popularly known in the area as Colombo, had unusually extended his working hours beyond his typical 5:00 p.m. closing time under unclear circumstances.

Eyewitnesses stated that while Colombo was in the process of closing his mobile money (MoMo) shop at about 6:15 p.m., two men dressed in long robes, with their faces covered and wielding pump-action guns, approached him.

They seized a bag believed to contain money, and as they were leaving the scene, one of the robbers shot him in the left side of his chest.

Colombo is said to have died at the scene. Witnesses indicated they were unable to assist him immediately, as the assailants were firing indiscriminately while fleeing into a nearby bush.

The incident reportedly occurred at Gbagblakope, near the Diamond Cement Factory in Aflao.

According to Sylvia, residents retrieved the body and conveyed it to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary.

The matter has since been reported to the municipal police, who are now handling the investigation.

Court remands 3 suspected gold smugglers arrested by GoldBod security taskforce https://www.adomonline.com/court-remands-3-suspected-gold-smugglers-arrested-by-goldbod-security-taskforce/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 08:51:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529830 The Achimota Circuit Court on Monday, April 28, remanded three suspected gold smugglers into the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for two weeks, following their arrest by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) security taskforce.

The suspects, identified as Goutam Katriya, 35, Miraj Sarvaych, 22, and Manash Damani, 42, are Indian nationals engaged in gold trading activities in Kumasi and Accra on behalf of Unique MM, a company allegedly owned by one Musah Salifu.

They were arrested at a private residence near Atinga Junction in Kumasi, which had reportedly been converted into a gold trading hub.

The arrest followed a tip-off from a patriotic whistleblower who reported that the suspects were buying gold at “black market” rates for smuggling purposes.

At a press conference in Accra, the Director of Investigations at National Security, Chief Superintendent Osman Alhassan, disclosed that GH₵1.9 million, 4,500 Indian rupees, 4.363 kilograms of gold, two counting machines, a CCTV recorder, and an Indian passport were found in their possession.

Preliminary investigations by National Security revealed that none of the suspects possesses a valid license to buy or trade gold in Ghana.

The suspects, who have reportedly operated in the country for over a decade, were also unable to provide residence permits, work permits, or tax payment records related to their business activities.

Further investigations indicate that Musah Salifu, the Ghanaian listed as the sole shareholder of Unique MM, is merely a front for Goutam Katriya, who is the real beneficial owner and alter ego of the company.

Chief Superintendent Alhassan issued a strong warning to both Ghanaians and foreign nationals against violating the Ghana Gold Board Act and other laws regulating the gold trade in the country.

“This arrest is only the beginning of GoldBod’s ruthless war against illegal gold trading and smuggling. We know the arrested suspects smuggle gold through unapproved border points into India.

“This has serious negative consequences for the Ghanaian economy. We are still gathering intelligence on several illegal gold traders and smugglers. Very soon, we shall take necessary action,” he stated.

The suspects will remain in NIB custody until May 12, 2025, when they are scheduled to reappear before the court.

In a related development, GoldBod has reiterated its directive for all foreigners engaged in gold trading to exit the market by April 30, 2025.

All individuals involved in gold transactions have also been directed to trade in Ghana cedis at the Bank of Ghana Reference Rate.

Any breach of these directives constitutes a punishable offense under the GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140), as outlined in a press release issued by the Board on April 23, 2025.

‘This is a campaign relaunch, not a Thank You Tour’ – Dr. Arthur Kennedy on Bawumia’s moves https://www.adomonline.com/this-is-a-campaign-relaunch-not-a-thank-you-tour-dr-arthur-kennedy-on-bawumias-moves/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 06:34:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529745 Physician, author, and politician Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy says former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Thank You Tour is really a relaunch of his flagbearer campaign, as the opposition party struggles to reconnect with the Ghanaian public.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday, April 28, he dismissed the tour’s official purpose and questioned its timing and sincerity.

“I actually think that we need an Apology Tour rather than a Thank You Tour,” he said.

“We should be apologising to the country for our bad governance.”

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had lost credibility in the eyes of the public and needed to do more than offer gratitude.

“We should also have an accountability process in which we hold to account the leaders of our previous government and agencies whose misgovernance, arrogance, and corruption caused our defeat,” he stressed.

“That will give us more credibility with the public.”

According to Dr. Kennedy, the internal issues within the party have not been resolved, despite public appearances suggesting otherwise.

He described the presidential primaries that produced Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer as divisive and even violent.

“The primary that led to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s selection was characterised by a little bit of rancour,” he said. “Someone lost an eye. There was violence, actually.”

He added that the unrest had not ended.

“I am told that even on this Thank You Tour, some slaps have been exchanged,” he revealed.

“Which shows that there is a need for more behind-the-scenes reconciliation and other things before we take it public.”

Dr. Kennedy did not mince words about what he believes is the real purpose of the tour.

“It is clear that Dr. Bawumia is trying to make his case ahead of his competitors,” he said. “Everybody knows that.”

For him, the party’s actions suggest it is still focused on image and political advantage rather than accountability and healing.

“We are jumping steps,” he said.

“We need to come clean before we move forward.”

Family cries for government intervention as illegal miners invade ancestral lands https://www.adomonline.com/family-cries-for-government-intervention-as-illegal-miners-invade-ancestral-lands/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 20:37:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529663 Members of the Asona Clan in Nkwaten, a community in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region, are calling on the government to urgently step in as illegal miners continue to ravage their ancestral lands.

The distressed family says the illicit mining activities have left a trail of destruction — polluting water bodies, degrading fertile lands, and threatening their very livelihood.

Residents accuse the illegal miners of operating with impunity, tearing through lands that hold not only economic but also deep cultural and historical significance for the Asona Clan.

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, family spokesperson Mohammed Boakye painted a grim picture of the situation, revealing that despite numerous complaints to the local authorities, no meaningful action has been taken.

Boakye emphasized that the lands being plundered are vital to the clan’s heritage and future, urging the government to enforce existing mining laws and protect their land rights.

He further called for a thorough investigation into how the illegal miners gained access to the area and demanded that any officials found complicit be held accountable.

As the crisis deepens, the Asona Clan is hopeful that their passionate appeal will spark swift intervention from national and regional authorities to save their lands — not just for themselves, but for generations yet unborn.

Kumasi High Court dismisses NDC petition against 3 parliamentary seats in Ashanti region https://www.adomonline.com/kumasi-high-court-dismisses-ndc-petition-against-3-parliamentary-seats-in-ashanti-region/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 15:48:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529579 A Kumasi High Court has dismissed a petition by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) challenging the 2024 election results of three parliamentary seats in the Ashanti Region, ruling in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NDC filed petitions contesting the outcomes in the parliamentary elections in the Ahafo Ano South-West, Obuasi East, and Ahafo Ano North constituencies.

The party claimed its candidates had rightfully won the seats despite official re-counts and the subsequent swearing-in of the NPP Members of Parliament.

Counsel for the NPP MPs, Clement Opoku Gyamfi argued that the NDC failed to comply with procedural requirements, specifically not applying for the determination of security for costs within 21 days after the election results were gazetted, as required by law.

“Two High Court judges, one from High Court 2 and another from High Court 6, have unanimously ruled that the NDC petition is invalid and dismissed it,” he said.

He said the NDC has no case and has ordered the three MPs to remain in Parliament to represent their constituencies.

OSP files criminal charges against Charles Bissue https://www.adomonline.com/osp-files-criminal-charges-against-charles-bissue/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 15:39:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529569

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has filed 15 criminal charges against Charles Bissue, former Secretary of the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), and his alleged accomplice, Andy Thomas Owusu, for corruption and abuse of public office in a mining licensing scandal involving GHC35,000.

The charges, filed at the High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra on April 28, allege that between January and February 2019, Mr. Bissue, while serving as IMCIM Secretary, corruptly accepted bribes totaling GHC35,000 from one Benjamin Adjapong, directly and through Owusu, to fast-track the renewal of an expired mining license for ORR Resources Enterprise without proper documentation.

The charges include multiple counts against both accused. Bissue faces nine counts, including Using Public Office for Profit under Section 179C(a) of Act 29 for receiving GHC15,000 on January 22, GHC10,000 on January 30, and another GHC10,000 on February 8 to bypass IMCIM vetting processes.

He is also charged with Corruption by a Public Officer under Sections 239(1) & (3) of Act 29 (as amended by Act 1034) for accepting bribes to influence official duties.

Mr. Owusu faces six counts, including Aiding Bissue’s Corruption under Section 179C(b) for acting as a middleman to facilitate payments, as well as Corruption of a Public Officer and Accepting Bribes to Influence Bissue under Sections 239(2) & 252(1).

These charges relate to GHC5,000 payouts he allegedly received in Kumasi for falsely claiming he could secure favors from Bissue.

The OSP’s investigation revealed that Mr. Owusu, in a sting operation by Tiger Eye P.I., negotiated a GHC100,000 bribe (later reduced to GHC40,000 each) with Adjapong, who posed as an ORR Resources representative.

Mr. Bissue ultimately received GHC35,000, while Mr. Owusu pocketed GHC15,000, per the prosecution.

In return, Bissue allegedly issued fraudulent permits and stickers declaring ORR Resources compliant with mining laws.

The IMCIM, established in 2017 to combat illegal mining (galamsey), was dissolved in 2021 after corruption scandals, including Bissue’s alleged involvement in misappropriating excavators and gold nuggets.

In November 2024, the Human Rights Court dismissed the final in a series of suits filed by Charles Bissue aimed at preventing the Office of the Special Prosecutor from arresting, investigating, or charging him.

Mr. Bissue had previously obtained a 10-day ex parte injunction restraining the OSP from arresting him, alleging that the warrant issued was unlawfully procured and intended to harass him.

He also sought a declaration that a notice marking him as wanted was void.

In its judgment, the Court found Bissue’s claims entirely unfounded, stating there was no evidence to support his allegations. The central question was whether an arrest warrant had indeed been issued by the Kaneshie District Court for OSP against Bissue.

The Court ruled that it was Bissue’s responsibility to provide proof of such a warrant, which he failed to do.

The Judge concluded that no warrant had been issued and dismissed the claim as a figment of the imagination of Bissue, awarding costs of GHC10,000 against him.

This ruling cleared the path for the OSP to continue its investigations into Mr. Bissue’s involvement with the defunct IMCIM and, in another separate case, pursue charges related to allegations of corruption as depicted in the Tiger Eye P.I. documentary Galamsey Fraud Part 1.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu, who until his death served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, was the esteemed occupant of the Silver Stool, a position of immense traditional significance in the Asante Kingdom.

His role placed him as the second-in-command in the Ashanti traditional hierarchy, often acting on behalf of the Asantehene in key matters of custom.

Daasebere Osei Bonsu, who was born on 31 December 1939, passed on at age 86 and reigned for 26 years.

Nana B, as he is popularly known, dismissed the claims as false and baseless.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B clarified that no such incident occurred, describing Mr. Opare Ansah as a calm individual who would never resort to violence.

“There is no iota of truth. Hon. Opare Ansah can never do that because I am even the radical one. So I don’t even understand where all of this is coming from. I don’t know how people will fabricate such a story,” he stated.

Nana B further refuted claims that he was reprimanded by former NPP Presidential aspirant and Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

“He was only raising concerns about our time and schedules because it was about to rain. So I don’t know why mischievous people in our team would record this video and circulate it,” he explained.

“I’m not a coward and not in any way angry. There is absolutely nothing. Hon. Kennedy Agyapong never issued a threat,” he added.

Expressing his disappointment, Nana B described the viral video as “useless, needless, and baseless.”

Bawumia acknowledges sentiments of supporters on why NPP lost 2024 elections https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-acknowledges-sentiments-of-supporters-on-why-npp-lost-2024-elections/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 09:54:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529419 Former Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed agreement with supporters of the NPP regarding the reasons behind the party’s loss in the 2024 elections.

Addressing party faithful during the ongoing Thank You Tour, which commenced on Saturday, Dr. Bawumia highlighted a number of factors that he believes accounted for the NPP’s defeat in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

Many of the reasons, Dr. Bawumia observed, centered on actions and inactions of the government that angered the people, including the NPP’s own supporters across the country.

“Many people have ascribed reasons why we lost, and some, including our General Secretary, even believe it was spiritual,” Dr. Bawumia said. “But if you look at it carefully, the reasons are many, and some were due to our own decisions and inaction. The cost of living went up, and there was also the issue of arrogance of power.”

Continuing, Dr. Bawumia went into details, highlighting specific issues, including the e-levy and the debt exchange project, factors that party supporters totally agreed with and applauded.

“We faced the issue of high cost of living, arrogance of power, and refusal to listen. The party asked us to do a reshuffle, but we did not listen for eight years. The party and Ghanaians told us they didn’t want the e-levy, but we didn’t listen.”

“Mobile money account users are about 16 million, so if you bring something they don’t like, you’re incurring the wrath of all these people,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“The party told us we should not touch pensioners in the debt restructuring. We had a meeting and decided against it, and the President announced to Ghanaians that there would be no haircut, and everyone was happy. But in the end, there was a haircut, and these bondholders, numbering about 800,000, were affected. These are the middle class, and each of them has dependents.”

Dr. Bawumia also lamented the lack of support for some youth-centered programmes, such as NABCO and youth in afforestation.

“We also refused to pay NABCO workers, who number about 100,000, and virtually cancelled the programme. We also did not pay the youth in afforestation, who were about 75,000.”

Dr. Bawumia further highlighted the poor handling of priority projects in some regions, as well as the controversial national cathedral project.

“The national cathedral was also a very big issue for us because after so much money was pumped in, there was no progress.”

Moving forward, Dr. Bawumia urged all party members to stay united and work hard to correct the challenges faced by the party, as captured by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has assured supporters that the party has taken important lessons from recent experiences and is determined to make the necessary corrections.

Speaking during the NPP’s ongoing Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in the party’s ability to rebuild trust and reconnect with the Ghanaian people ahead of the next elections.

“We have learned our lessons as a party, and we will correct ourselves,” Dr. Bawumia stated, addressing a gathering of party faithful and community leaders.

He emphasized that the NPP remains committed to its core values and would work tirelessly to address the concerns of the electorate.

According to him, acknowledging past shortcomings is the first step toward renewal and progress.

The Thank You Tour, which has taken the NPP leadership across various regions of the country, is aimed at expressing gratitude to party members and supporters for their unwavering commitment during the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia noted that despite the challenges faced, the party’s vision for national development remains intact, and lessons learned would shape a more inclusive and effective governance approach.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Bawumia called for unity among members, urging them to rally behind the leadership as the party charts a new path forward.

“This is not a time for blame, but a time for reflection, correction, and renewed energy,” he said.

He further pledged that the NPP would continue to listen to the voices of Ghanaians and work harder to deliver on its promises.

Why NPP lost 2024 elections: General Secretary opens up on Mike Oquaye report https://www.adomonline.com/why-npp-lost-2024-elections-general-secretary-opens-up-on-mike-oquaye-report/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 13:26:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529176 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has slightly lifted the lid on the much-anticipated report of the Mike Oquaye Committee, which investigated the reasons behind the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

Addressing NPP stakeholders at various meetings in the Western Region on the opening day of the party’s Thank You Tour, led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the General Secretary stated that details of the report would not be made public for “strategic reasons.”

However, he explained that in order to successfully implement the committee’s recommendations, it was important for party stakeholders to be made aware of certain aspects, particularly some of the reasons for the party’s defeat, as captured in the report.

Key among the reasons, Mr. Kodua noted, were the actions and inactions of the government regarding certain critical issues.

These included the government’s failure to prioritise key projects in the party’s strongholds, a poor relationship between the government and the party, the arrogance of power, and internal bickering, among others.

The audience, who had shared similar sentiments with the Prof. Oquaye Committee during its investigations, were in full agreement as the General Secretary outlined the factors identified.

Mr. Kodua stressed the need for the party to fully implement the committee’s recommendations.

He added that, as part of the process, a Constitutional Review Committee has been inaugurated, and he urged members of the party to submit their proposals to it.

Driver of VVIP bus swept away by overflowing River Okye shares harrowing experience https://www.adomonline.com/driver-of-vvip-bus-swept-away-by-overflowing-river-okye-shares-harrowing-experience/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 12:03:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529167 Jonathan Kwateng, the driver of the VVIP bus (registration number GT 8213-23) that was swept away by the overflowing River Okye at Assin Edubease, has shared his terrifying experience in an exclusive interview with Radio Fosu/Adom News.

Recalling the moment, he said it felt like “resurrecting from death,” describing the horror as passengers — including a pregnant woman and children — screamed for help while he was powerless to assist.

The incident occurred after heavy rains caused River Okye to flood its banks.

Thanks to the swift intervention of the fire service, all 63 passengers on board, who were traveling from Winneba to Sefwi Wiawso after a graduation ceremony at UEW’s main campus, were rescued without injury.

The rescued passengers were later provided with another bus to continue their journey early this morning, while a National Road Safety Authority towing vehicle has been called in to recover the submerged bus for mechanical and electrical repairs.

Meanwhile, Central North MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, has praised the fire service, police, and all stakeholders for their role in the successful rescue operation.

$58m spent on National Cathedral contributed to our defeat – Bawumia https://www.adomonline.com/58m-spent-on-national-cathedral-contributed-to-our-defeat-bawumia/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 11:48:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529157 Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has partly attributed the party’s loss in the 2024 general election to the controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project and a last-minute spike in fuel prices.

Speaking in Takoradi at the start of his nationwide Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia responded to reports allegedly leaking from the Mike Oquaye Committee’s findings, which suggested his perceived religious “flirting” played a role in the defeat.

Dr. Bawumia firmly dismissed that claim, pointing instead to real economic and governance missteps.

He emphasized that the uncompleted National Cathedral project, which had already consumed $58 million in public funds, deeply eroded public trust and fueled widespread voter dissatisfaction.

He also highlighted the sharp increase in fuel prices just three days before the election, describing it as another major blow to the NPP’s chances.

According to him, this sudden hike angered drivers and commuters, many of whom expressed their frustration at the ballot box.

“The National Cathedral we were not able to complete after $58 million was sunk into it caused a lot of rage in the public,” he said.

“Also, three days before election day, the price of fuel went up. When I heard it, I thought it was a joke. The drivers were angry at us. So, people went to vote against us with anger. That is why we put together the Mike Oquaye Committee to produce a report on why we lost. I am happy that there is no religious or tribal factor that caused our defeat,” he added.

A high-level delegation sent by the Yaa Naa, led by Zangbalun Naa Dr. Yakubu II, Chief of the Zangbalun Traditional Area, met with both the hospital’s management and representatives of the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) on Friday, April 25.

Following this meeting, emergency services resumed at the referral facility, which serves the northern sector.

However, the doctors are still demanding an apology from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh before fully resuming work to offer health services at the Outpatients Department, Myjoyonline.com has learned.

The doctors had downed their tools, citing a hostile working environment, a lack of basic medical supplies, and what they described as an insult to their dignity by senior government officials.

The strike was triggered by the dismissal of the TTH CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, by the minister over alleged mismanagement and medical negligence, which led to a patient’s death at the hospital.

The minister’s visit was intended to assess the facility’s current state and gather first-hand information regarding the alleged negligence that resulted in the death of a patient referred to the hospital weeks earlier.

The deceased, Bavug Salim, was rushed to the Emergency Ward’s red zone in an unconscious state but was allegedly left unattended for several hours without explanation, leading to his death.

During the visit, a medical officer, Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, attempted to explain the circumstances surrounding the death, but the minister found the explanation unsatisfactory.

The minister also expressed dissatisfaction with the hospital’s overall condition and resource management, ultimately leading to the CEO’s dismissal.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has vowed not to renew the contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, if sweepers continue to receive GH¢250 as salary.

This position follows calls by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni for YEA to terminate its agreement with Zoomlion.

The journalist accused Zoomlion of exploiting workers under the sanitation module and breaching the terms of its contractual obligations.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Sanitation, however, dismissed the calls, citing possible job losses.

In a post on Facebook, Mr. Basintale declared that he has dedicated his life to integrity and ensuring better opportunities for the youth and people of Ghana. He added that President John Mahama’s reset agenda includes ensuring that every worker is paid satisfactorily for the work done, and there must be a change.

“I promise on my honour as I stand by the grave of my late DAD, NOT to RENEW the contract in its CURRENT STATE or FORM. It is EVIL for the previous government to have committed to this, and I SHALL STOP IT,” he declared.

Expressing personal concern over the plight of sanitation workers, he added, “If my mother, brother, or sister were a Zoomlion worker, I wouldn’t be happy with any of them taking GH¢250 as salary.”

Meanwhile, he has asked the public to join him on a Facebook Live session at 8 pm today to share their thoughts and discuss the way forward regarding the contentious contract.

One of the conveners of the protest, media personality Okatakyie Afrifa, described the initial motion to prohibit the protest as a move made in bad faith.

The protest will begin at Obra Spot near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, proceed through the Ring Road, and conclude at the Liberation Square opposite the Jubilee House.

It is scheduled to run from 4:00 p.m. on April 28 to 12:00 a.m. on April 29.

I won’t leave my husband even if I catch him with another woman – Cynthia Morrison https://www.adomonline.com/i-wont-leave-my-husband-even-if-i-catch-him-with-another-woman-cynthia-morrison/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 10:35:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528637

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Cynthia Morrison, has vowed to stand by her husband and not leave him, even if she catches him with another woman.

According to her, this firm decision arises from the strength of their bond as a couple.

She emphasized that it is always better to work on a marriage than to rush into a new one, uncertain of what lies ahead.

The former Agona West Member of Parliament (MP) made these remarks in an interview with Joy News, while recounting how her former aide, Chris Arthur, convinced constituents that her husband had encouraged him to run against her in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

“Even if you come and tell me you saw my husband with another lady, I will not leave him. Even if I go and see him with a lady, I will just pick him up and we will come home,” she said.

“I am telling you on national television because from there, I don’t know the next man I’m going to meet. He could be worse than my husband. So whatever you have, you polish it,” she added.

Cynthia Morrison lost the 2024 election as an independent candidate after losing the NPP parliamentary primary.

She garnered 152 votes, while Christopher Arthur emerged victorious with 240 votes, securing the nomination as the parliamentary candidate.

In the general election, National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Ernestina Ofori Dangbey won the seat with 26,080 votes, while Christopher Arthur polled 20,693 votes.

Political parties announce nationwide protest over Chief Justice’s suspension https://www.adomonline.com/political-parties-announce-nationwide-protest-over-chief-justices-suspension/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 09:35:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528605 A coalition of political parties has scheduled a nationwide protest for Monday, May 5, 2025, following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting held on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

The coalition includes the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), among others.

They argued that the suspension of the Chief Justice is not an isolated incident but part of a broader scheme to “capture every arm of government, even the judiciary.”

They cited a previous failed attempt by the NDC in 2010 to remove the former Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, Ghana’s first female to hold the position.

“History is being repeated. We must not remain silent.”

May be an image of text

Describing the suspension as a “reckless assault” on Ghana’s democracy, the parties have pledged to defend the constitution and uphold the nation’s cherished democratic principles.

“The political parties observed that the blatant disregard for the rule of law is not merely a political matter but rather an assault on the very soul of our democracy. The disturbing trend of judicial intimidation by the NDC is not new. The pattern is undeniable,” the group noted in a statement.

May be an image of text

“We will not allow political power to erode the foundations of our republic,” they declared, warning that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which currently leads the government, is deliberately attempting to compromise all independent institutions.

May be an image of text

The group has alleged that after reconstituting the judiciary with “loyalist appointments,” the Mahama-led government plans to pursue constitutional interpretation at the Supreme Court, aimed at legitimising a third-term bid in the 2028 elections.

They have therefore rallied all citizens, civil society organizations, and religious groups to join the non-partisan, national call to defend judicial independence.

“Is this the future Mahama promised?” the statement questioned. “A regime of fear, where livelihoods are sacrificed on the altar of political vengeance?”

“To remain indifferent is to endorse the rise of an authoritarian state. Be a citizen, not a spectator. Stand for democracy. Oppose dictatorship.”

Mahama orders promotion of all eligible deputy education directors https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-orders-promotion-of-all-eligible-deputy-education-directors/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 07:15:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528569 President John Mahama has directed the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to immediately promote all eligible education directors.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made this announcement on Thursday, April 24, during the launch of the free sanitary pad initiative.

“One of your major concerns, the president raised to me, is that in his campaign rounds, many of you who are deputy directors of education struggle to move up the ladder to become directors because of the unavailability of office spaces,” he stated.

“President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to give all those deputy directors a legitimate promotion,” Iddrisu added.

The Tamale South MP emphasized that even in the absence of office spaces, the promoted individuals would serve in their new capacities as directors of GES.

This directive comes amid a threat of a nationwide strike by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) by April 30. GNAT has raised concerns over several unresolved issues that continue to adversely affect teachers in the country.

Among the issues, GNAT highlighted the challenges with the implementation of the Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS), which was reintroduced by the Public Services Commission (PSC) despite objections from unions.

According to GNAT, the HRMIS has caused significant delays in salary reactivation, with over 800 teachers affected as of December 2024. Some teachers have faced delays ranging from four to 12 months.

Additionally, teachers who have pursued further studies, often self-sponsored, have been denied upgrades upon completion.

Several teachers who were successful in the last promotion exercise but below the rank of Principal Superintendent have also not been upgraded or placed at their correct ranks.

In a statement released on Sunday, March 30, the Office of the President confirmed that she had received treatment and was in stable condition.

The suit, filed at the Accra High Court on Thursday, April 24, 2025, was initiated through their counsel, former Abuakwa South MP, Samuel Atta Akyea.

According to the plaintiffs, Dr. Ayine fabricated a false narrative alleging that they had fraudulently used a corporate account to siphon State funds for personal use.

They are seeking exemplary and punitive damages for what they describe as highly offensive and defamatory statements made by the Attorney General during a press conference held on March 24, 2025.

In addition to damages, the plaintiffs are requesting a perpetual injunction to restrain Dr. Ayine from making or facilitating any further publication or broadcast of similar defamatory content.

“The international and widespread opprobrium visited on the plaintiffs by the defendant has become a continued discussion on media outlets and has affected the young children of the plaintiffs, who are ridiculed and taunted by their mates in school,” the suit states.

They are also demanding costs, including legal fees.

“In the natural and ordinary meaning, the words spewed out to the entire world, of and concerning the Plaintiffs by the Defendant, meant and were understood to mean that the plaintiffs are criminals and fraudsters who have embezzled state funds to enrich themselves. Needless to add that the Plaintiffs are involved in money laundering,” portions of the read writ.

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has urged strict adherence to constitutional procedures and the principles of the rule of law in response to the ongoing process for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In a statement on Thursday, April 24, 2025, the GBA noted it has been closely monitoring the process, acknowledging the constitutional provisions in Article 146 (6) to (10).

However, the statement emphasized the importance of Article 296 of the Constitution, which governs the exercise of discretionary powers.

The GBA has therefore admonished that all persons playing a role in the process act in a way that upholds the independence and integrity of the Judiciary.

Reaffirming its commitment, the GBA underscored its responsibility to uphold, reinforce, and promote public trust in Ghana’s justice delivery system.

“The GBA shall remain the conscience of society, the voice of the voiceless, and act to safeguard the Rule of Law and uphold the Constitution of the Republic, which embodies the wishes and aspirations of the people of Ghana,” the statement added.

Tamale Teaching Hospital strike bites hard; many patients denied healthcare https://www.adomonline.com/tamale-teaching-hospital-strike-bites-hard-many-patients-denied-healthcare/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 14:36:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528344 Dozens of patients were left frustrated and fuming as they arrived at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) on Thursday morning seeking medical attention, only to find empty consulting rooms with no doctors in sight.

Many queued along the corridors of the Out-Patients Department (OPD), wearing dejected expressions, while others looked on helplessly.

This follows a full-blown strike by doctors who have downed tools, citing a hostile working environment, a lack of basic medical supplies, and what they describe as an insult to their dignity by senior government officials.

Joy News’ Northern Regional Correspondent, Martina Bugri, reports that health authorities at the hospital were in a crucial meeting at the time of filing this report to find solutions to the crisis.

Some patients have resorted to seeking treatment at other facilities, but most remain gathered in despair, waiting for positive news from hospital management.

In a statement released after an emergency general assembly meeting the previous day, the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) announced that its members would no longer provide services at the General OPD, Antenatal Clinic, Specialist Clinic, and Paediatrics OPD.

“Inpatient care will continue for our clients currently on admission until they are safely discharged,” the statement clarified.

The strike was triggered by the dismissal of the TTH’s CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku, by the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, over alleged mismanagement and medical negligence leading to a patient’s death at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Mr. Akandoh has urged doctors to return to work while the government addresses the numerous challenges hindering the hospital’s smooth operations.

“I am prepared to come to the table to discuss whatever needs to be discussed. I am the first person to look after your interests; therefore, let’s call off the strike,” he appealed.

However, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has refused to back down, demanding a public apology from Mr. Akandoh for Dr. Akwulpwa and the former CEO, citing humiliation and remarks that undermined their competence.

The GMA is also calling for immediate solutions to all the issues facing the TTH.

Six injured in violent attack over land dispute at Domeabra https://www.adomonline.com/six-injured-in-violent-attack-over-land-dispute-at-domeabra/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 13:06:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528330

Six people have been injured in a violent land dispute between residents of Danchira and Domeabra in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

The conflict, which began on the evening of Tuesday, April 22, escalated at the outskirts of the Domeabra community with gunshots fired, leaving several individuals injured.

Some of the victims received initial treatment at a local health facility before being transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC).

The following afternoon, a reprisal attack at the same location resulted in four more people sustaining machete wounds.

Francis Boateng, the Developmental Chief of Domeabra, told Adom News that the dispute began when workers were on a piece of land when a group from Danchira, led by one Ashaley, attacked them. He added that Ashaley later returned with an armed group and began shooting indiscriminately at the site.

Expressing concerns that the situation could worsen if not addressed, the chief called on the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation.

To restore order, the Weija Divisional Police Command, led by Superintendent Eric Amponsah, conducted patrols in both communities.

I had no intention to disrespect anybody; call off strike – Akandoh to TTH doctors https://www.adomonline.com/i-had-no-intention-to-disrespect-anybody-call-off-strike-akandoh-to-tth-doctors/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 12:50:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528328 Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has appealed for calm at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), asking doctors to return to work.

The Juaboso MP has stated that he had no intention to disrespect any health worker during his unannounced visit to the hospital on Tuesday.

At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, April 24, Mr. Akandoh stated his action was triggered by a personal experience and pledged effective collaboration.

“It can happen to anybody; it happened to me. When I had an accident, the first place I was rushed to was Nyinahini District Hospital. I never imagined that I would one day be at Nyinahini District Hospital, but I was there.

“And so, today, from where I sit, I will contribute my quota to the development of this sector. I have absolutely no intention to disrespect any medical doctor or health worker; that will be the last thing I will do. But let it be said that respect is reciprocal,” he said.

A surprise visit by Mr. Akandoh to the Tamale Teaching Hospital in the Northern Region erupted into a heated confrontation with staff, highlighting the facility’s ongoing challenges with non-functional basic medical equipment.

The unannounced inspection was to understand the circumstances surrounding the death of a patient, Bavug Salim, allegedly due to the lack of a functional ventilator at the hospital’s emergency unit.

However, tensions flared when the Minister discovered that several critical machines—including ventilators at the emergency unit, diagnostic and sterilization equipment, MRI scans, among others—were not operational.

A video of a heated exchange between Akandoh and Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, Head of the Accident and Emergency Department, quickly went viral on social media, sparking backlash.

Subsequently, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Adam Atiku was dismissed, a decision which has been criticized, particularly by the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).

The GMA, while demanding an apology, also called for Dr. Atiku’s reinstatement, although Dr. Bawah Abdulai has been named as his successor.

to register their displeasure, the Doctors Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) has indefinitely suspended emergency and outpatient services, leaving several patients stranded.

With no arrests made, the Binduri District Assembly is also yet to announce the next line of action following the failed confirmation.

Three in NIB’s grips over ‘bribe’ for National Service postings [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/three-in-nibs-grips-over-bribe-for-national-service-postings-audio/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 12:16:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528277 It has emerged that three people are currently in the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) for extorting money from prospective national service personnel.

The Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA), Felix Gyamfi, disclosed this in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

Mr. Gyamfi stated that the suspects collected no less than GH₵1,500, claiming they could post the unsuspecting victims to their preferred institutions.

“Some people who have made up their minds to extort money to post people to the Bank Hospital, Korle-Bu, among others, are currently with the BNI. Some people have turned the postings into a business. We may be restricted from publishing their photos, but I will deal with this matter,” he stated.

Stressing his commitment to lead with character and leave a blemish-free legacy, Mr. Gyamfi vowed he would not allow anyone to create problems for him.

He noted that it is important for leaders to demonstrate distinct qualities to curb insubordination and corrupt practices.

“Most of our problems are leadership-related because if the leader doesn’t create the right impression or engage in corrupt practices, how will the followers do that? I am working with you, so why would you create problems for me?” he questioned.

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah to lead anti-galamsey demo to Jubilee House [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/okatakyie-afrifa-mensah-to-lead-anti-galamsey-demo-to-jubilee-house-video/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 11:12:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528242 Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah is set to lead a major demonstration against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in Accra.

The three-day protest is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 28, and run through Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

It aims to demand urgent government action to curb irresponsible mining activities that are devastating Ghana’s forests, water bodies, and communities.

Afrifa-Mensah noted that the protest duration could be extended to a month, depending on how participants conduct themselves.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he clarified that the protest should not be seen as an attempt to stir disaffection or make the government unpopular.

“I was vocal about galamsey even during President Akufo-Addo’s tenure, and I remain a staunch NPP member,” he said. “This is not about politics—it’s a national emergency.”

He described the protest under the current Mahama-led government as a symbolic cry for help in the face of Ghana’s worsening environmental crisis, while also offering practical solutions.

“We have notified the Police, and they’re expected to meet with us this morning to discuss modalities,” he said. “Their only concern right now is our venue—the Flagstaff House is a security installation, and they’re asking us to change it.”

He added, “There’s been no court injunction yet. So if none is issued by Monday, the protest will take place at the Flagstaff House.”

Dubbed #GalamseyMustFall, the protest is intended to mount pressure on the government to take decisive steps against illegal mining.

Afrifa-Mensah is calling on all Ghanaians to join the cause and push for reforms that will help restore the environment and protect the country’s natural resources.

Ntim Fordjour, has stated that he is happy the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, secured more votes in his constituency.

According to him, that was what he worked for, and achieving a positive result was fulfilling.

Rev. Fordjour’s remarks come after Dr. Bawumia refuted claims that his Muslim faith was a key reason behind the party’s loss in the election.

Speaking at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, April 23, to kick off a Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia described the assertions as baseless and unsupported by evidence, urging Ghanaians to focus on data rather than propaganda.

He further cited the Assin South constituency, noting that he secured more votes than Rev. Fordjour.

Rev. Fordjour garnered 14,899 votes while Dr. Bawumia secured 17,617 votes.

Reacting to this, the former Deputy Education Minister, in an interview on Adom FM’s Naket Kasiebo, said he took no offence, adding that he had promised to help Dr. Bawumia secure an overwhelming victory.

“I was happy Dr. Bawumia garnered more votes than me because that was what I worked for, and I was glad at the end to see that dream fulfilled. My votes dropped because of an independent candidate who polled about 10,000,” he noted.

Police react to detention of 4 officers for arresting judge over traffic offence https://www.adomonline.com/police-react-to-detention-of-4-officers-for-arresting-judge-over-traffic-offence/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 06:27:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528121

The Ghana Police Service has denied reports that four officers were detained for arresting a Circuit Court judge, Angela Attachie, over a traffic violation.

In a statement signed by Superintendent of Police Joseph Benefo Darkwah, the Head of Public Affairs at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Service dismissed the reports as false and without merit.

The statement clarified that the claims stemmed from a petition received on April 7, 2025, from the judge.

She alleged that on December 13, 2024, four officers from the Adenta Divisional Police Command, led by Inspector Godwin Dey, harassed and assaulted her court clerk.

Additionally, the officers wrongfully towed her vehicle from the Adenta Court Complex to the police station, and despite a formal complaint with the Adenta Divisional Command, she had not received any official response.

Following the petition, the CID initiated an investigation and invited the officers involved—Inspector Francis Adjei (No. 53349), General Sergeant Dasebre Oti Boateng (No. 53852), and Corporal Jonah Ajubulisa—to provide statements at the headquarters.

“At no point were the officers detained as has been falsely reported. We therefore urge the public to disregard the publication and treat it as false and without any basis,” the statement read in part.

Assuring the public of a continued investigation with due process, the Service also reaffirmed its support for personnel who act lawfully in the discharge of their duties, while also ensuring that any allegations of misconduct are investigated and addressed appropriately.

TTH doctors indefinitely suspend emergency and outpatient services https://www.adomonline.com/tth-doctors-indefinitely-suspend-emergency-and-outpatient-services/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 05:54:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528105 Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) have declared an indefinite suspension of all emergency and outpatient services.

They cite a hostile working environment, lack of basic medical supplies, and what they describe as an insult to their dignity by top government officials.

In a statement released after an emergency general assembly meeting held at noon on Tuesday, the Doctors’ Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital (DATTH) announced that its members would no longer offer services at the General OPD, Antenatal Clinic, Specialist Clinic, and Paediatrics OPD.

“Inpatient care shall continue for our clients currently on admission until they are safely discharged,” the statement clarified.

At the heart of the doctors’ protest is the fallout from an incident during the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s visit to the hospital on April 22, 2025, and what the doctors have described as “false and biased reportage” from several media outlets covering the visit.

They demand unqualified apologies from the Health Minister and Tamale North MP, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, to Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa, the entire medical staff, and specifically the team at the Accident and Emergency Department.

“We shall resume provision of emergency and outpatient services after we receive appropriate apologies,” the doctors declared.

But beyond the call for apologies lies a staggering list of infrastructure and resource deficits that the doctors say make effective medical care nearly impossible.

In their statement, the association presented a catalogue of urgent and medium-term demands, including:

 • Constant water and electricity supply

 • Steady provision of oxygen and critical medical consumables such as gloves, cannulae, syringes, disinfectants, and glucometer strips

 • Reagents to keep lab services running

 • Vital signs monitors for high-dependency units

 • Ventilators for various wards, including neonatal, paediatric, maternal, and emergency units

 • Transport ventilators and incubators

 • Repairs to essential sterilisation equipment

In the medium term, the doctors are asking for high-tech diagnostic and treatment tools, including an MRI machine that doesn’t rely on helium, a CT scan with an infusion pump, mammography and fluoroscopy machines.

Other requests include a C-arm for the theatre, ABG machines in all ICUs, and mobile X-ray units.

“We shall advise ourselves if there is failure to achieve the above within the shortest possible time,” the statement warns.

The doctors are also demanding public retractions and apologies from media houses that carried what they describe as “false and biased reportage” of the incident.

Until such apologies are made, DATTH says it will not engage with those media outlets. And the warning doesn’t stop there.

The doctors say that if any member feels threatened while performing their duties at the hospital, they will “immediately remove themselves from such hostile environment” in the interest of personal safety.

She stated that the demolition was carried out by individuals claiming to be officials from the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), who arrived in a branded pickup vehicle.

When asked whether she had a building permit, Akosua Manu, who could not confirm or deny, explained that community leaders told her they were the rightful owners of the land.

Additionally, she said the Assembly also claimed it had no control over the land, hence the project proceeded.

Condemning what she described as an act of impunity, she vowed to pursue all necessary legal and administrative channels to ensure the facility is restored and those responsible for the demolition are held accountable.

Names of petitioners, allegations against Chief Justice and her responses emerge https://www.adomonline.com/names-of-petitioners-allegations-against-chief-justice-and-her-responses-emerge/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 16:56:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527995

The identities behind the three petitions seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo have surfaced following her suspension by President John Mahama.

Additionally, the full contents of the petitions and Justice Torkornoo’s responses have also emerged, although the constitution stipulates that all proceedings related to such petitions should be held in camera.

The petitioners have been identified as Kingsley Agyei, convener of Shining Stars of Ghana; lawyer and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo; and Daniel Ofori.

The petitioners accused the Chief Justice of stated misbehaviour and incompetence, citing Article 146(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which reads: “A Justice of the Superior Court or a Chairman of a Regional Tribunal shall not be removed from office except for stated misbehaviour or incompetence, or on grounds of inability to perform the functions of his office arising from infirmity of body or mind.”

They argued that the Chief Justice would not restore public confidence in the
judiciary as a result of her demonstration of incompetence and stated misbehaviour and therefore must be removed from that high office.

Meanwhile, President Mahama has set up a five-member committee chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, a Justice on the Supreme Court bench to handle the inquiry.

Other members are Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, also a Justice on the Supreme Court bench, who was appointed in 2022.

Others in the five-member committee are Mr Daniel Yaw Domelevo, a former Auditor-General, Major Flora Bazaanura Dalugo from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), and Professor James Sefah Dzisah, an associate Professor at the University of Ghana.

However, there is no timeline on when the inquiry would be completed.

NPP threatens protest over suspension of Chief Justice [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-threatens-protest-over-suspension-of-chief-justice-listen/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 15:26:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527966 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, announced that the party would embark on a series of protests to register their displeasure.

“We will agitate, we will demonstrate, and let the whole world know that President Mahama is not the man we know. He is not protecting our democracy, and the judiciary is under attack,” he stated.

He emphasized that the suspension is not just a personal affront to Chief Justice Torkornoo but an attack on Ghana’s democracy and the judiciary.

On Tuesday, April 22, President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice following consultation with the Council of State and the establishment of a committee to investigate three petitions seeking her removal.

In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency cited Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which mandates the establishment of a committee to probe allegations against a superior court judge if a prima facie case is established.

Although the move has been recognized as constitutional, it has sparked strong criticism from a section of Ghanaians.

23-year-old woman dies in fire outbreak at Aboduabo https://www.adomonline.com/23-year-old-woman-dies-in-fire-outbreak-at-aboduabo/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 15:16:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527873 A tragic fire incident at Aboduabo in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai municipality of the Western North Region has claimed the life of a 23-year-old woman, Sandra Danso.

The nursing mother reportedly lost her life when a fire engulfed a makeshift kiosk where she sold bottled petrol.

According to eyewitness Kwaku Acheampong, an electrician in the community, the fire started when petrol being sold by the deceased accidentally splashed onto a nearby open flame, causing a rapid escalation of the fire.

Efforts by residents to control the blaze proved unsuccessful.

Sandra was caught in the inferno and could not escape in time.

Narrating his side of the story, Elder David Boatey, the father of the deceased, said he was on his farm when he received a distressed call about the fire.

Unfortunately, by the time he rushed to the scene, everything had been consumed by the flames, including his daughter.

The charred remains of the young woman have since been retrieved, and investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.

]]> GMA demands apology from Health Minister; slams dismissal of TTH CEO https://www.adomonline.com/gma-demands-apology-from-health-minister-slams-dismissal-of-tth-ceo/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 15:07:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527948 The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has condemned the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), Dr. Adam Atiku, describing it as unjust and an abuse of power.

In a statement, the association said the development was disturbing, lamenting the unfair treatment of doctors at the Emergency Unit during a recent visit by the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.

The GMA revealed that the head of the Emergency Unit has faced threats and cyber-bullying, putting his safety and mental health at risk.

The GMA has declared its support for the affected medical personnel and urged public officials to exercise accountability and restraint.

“The manner in which the dismissal was carried out is an affront to due process and an abuse of power by the Hon. Minister of Health. The GMA stands in solidarity with our colleagues in the wake of these injustices being perpetuated,” the statement read in part.

The GMA has also condemned what it described as a “media audit” of the recent patient death at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), warning that it violated patient confidentiality, exposed the hospital to potential legal repercussions, and created bias in public opinion.

In response to these concerns, the GMA is demanding an unqualified apology from both the Minister of Health and the Tamale North MP, Alhassan Suhuyini, for what it has termed “unwarranted attacks” on the hospital staff.

Furthermore, the GMA has called on the management of TTH to ensure that due process is followed in addressing the matter, prioritize the safety of staff, and provide psychological support for those affected by the incident.

The GMA reiterated its dedication to addressing the long-standing challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system and cautioned that it is actively monitoring developments and will offer guidance to its members as necessary.
