The 67-year-old received the diagnosis in April and underwent an operation in May to remove his prostate. The condition was detected early, and he has since made a strong recovery.

Hughton, a former Tottenham Hotspur and Republic of Ireland defender who later managed Newcastle United and Brighton in the Premier League, said he is now in good health and hopes to use his experience to raise awareness about the disease.

“The news certainly didn’t scare me,” he said. “I know everyone is different, but my first impression was ‘I’ll be fine.’ I didn’t instantly think this is probably just going to kill me. I just thought, ‘OK, we’ll have to do what we have to do.’”

The former Black Stars coach explained that the warning signs first emerged during a routine health check while he was in charge at Brighton, arranged through the League Managers Association.

Further monitoring showed elevated PSA levels, and a later scan confirmed cancer. He was considered at higher risk due to his age, family history, and ethnicity—factors linked to increased prostate cancer risk among Black men.

“I had very good advice, and all the treatment options were given to me, and I decided to have my prostate removed. The recovery has gone really well,” he said.

“I’m one year post-operation, and I feel good. It’s all gone very well. I’ve got a lot of energy. Keeping active and busy is part of how I am anyway, but it’s also about rehabilitation and keeping your mind active as well.”

“I’m very comfortable with my prognosis and my post-operation feelings. I’m in a really good place,” he added.

Hughton, who won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Tottenham and earned 53 caps for the Republic of Ireland, has previously managed clubs including Birmingham City, Norwich City and Nottingham Forest.

He took charge of the Ghana national football team after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar but was dismissed in 2024 following the team’s group-stage exit at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Barcelona duo David Oduro and Abdul Aziz set for Black Stars call-up for Mexico friendly https://www.adomonline.com/barcelona-duo-david-oduro-and-abdul-aziz-set-for-black-stars-call-up-for-mexico-friendly/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 12:22:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655424 FC Barcelona Atlètic duo David Oduro and Abdul Aziz Issah are in line for potential inclusion in Ghana’s squad for their upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team next month, as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana national football team will take on Mexico on May 22 in their first warm-up match ahead of the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Reports from SPORT indicate that both players are expected to be named in the squad.

However, their participation could hinge on Barcelona Atlètic’s progress in the promotion playoffs, with the Spanish club potentially requesting their release if they advance further in their campaign.

Aziz Issah has been one of the standout performers for Barça B this season, scoring four goals and establishing himself as a regular starter under coach Juliano Belletti.

The midfielder has already featured for Ghana at the senior level, playing 30 minutes in a 2025 Unity Cup friendly against Trinidad and Tobago in the United Kingdom.

Oduro, meanwhile, is close to full fitness after an injury setback but has also enjoyed consistent minutes this season. A call-up would mark his first appearance in the senior national team setup.

Aziz, currently in his second loan spell at Barcelona, is reportedly attracting interest from several clubs, while Oduro remains tied to the Catalan outfit until 2027.

The meeting with Mexico will offer Ghana a key early test as they build towards the World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign on June 17 against Panama, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz, recently appointed to lead the side, is under growing pressure to guide Ghana beyond the group stage following early exits in 2014 and 2022.

10 key things Carlos Queiroz’s said at his unveiling https://www.adomonline.com/10-key-things-carlos-queirozs-said-at-his-unveiling/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 10:57:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655414 Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz was officially unveiled as the new Black Stars coach in Accra on Thursday, April 23, at the Alisa Hotel.

The 73-year-old has been handed a four-month contract ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz replaced Otto Addo, who was sacked in March after Black Stars’ back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany.

The former Real Madrid coach has been tasked with improving the team and making an impact ahead of the 23rd edition of the global showpiece.

Here are 10 key things he said during his unveiling:

1. I am ready for the job as Black Stars head coach

2. This will be the most-challenging job in my career

3. I am a winning coach who is not concerned about style of play

4. I want to see my players fight as a team without the ball and adapt with the ball

5. My challenge is to win the next game and win the next game

6. We have to bring in the right players and make the right decisions

7. I cannot make promises, but I can assure you that we will be ready against Panama

8. We will create fair opportunities for local players

9. I will select players who are capable, experienced and fit

10. Five new backroom staff will join the technical team while John Pailtsil, Fatawu Dauda and Desmond Ofei will keep their respective roles

Ghana is making her fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup for 2026 and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with steering Ghana beyond the group stage, following group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations rise for a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.

You will be foolish to defend GFA’s decision to use Black Stars coach’s residence as a technical directorate office – George Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/you-will-be-foolish-to-defend-gfas-decision-to-use-black-stars-coachs-residence-as-a-technical-directorate-office-george-afriyie/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 10:54:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655384 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has strongly criticised the governing body over its decision to convert the official residence of the Black Stars head coach into a technical directorate office.

The controversy follows revelations by a Senior Communications Officer of the GFA, Sheikh Tophic Sienu, that the five-bedroom property in Accra’s Airport Residential Area, previously reserved for the national team coach, has been repurposed for administrative use.

The development has triggered widespread debate, with sections of the public urging authorities to ensure newly appointed Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is allocated the facility instead.

However, the move has received backing from GFA Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo, who defended the decision in an interview with Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

Afriyie, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, did not hold back in his response, describing the decision as unacceptable and condemning those who support it.

“You have the Ghana Football Association (GFA) headquarters at Osu, while the technical centre is in Prampram,” he said.

“The Black Stars coach’s residence, located in a prime area like the Airport residential area, and it cannot be used as a technical directorate. There was a reason why the government decided to get a house for the Black Stars coach, and so this decision is wrong.

“You will be foolish to defend the Ghana Football Association’s decision to use Black Stars coach’s official residence as a technical directorate office, and anyone who defends this act is foolish. I stand by my words,” Mr Afriyie added.

Reports indicate that Queiroz, who has signed a short-term four-month contract, is expected to stay in a hotel ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The development adds another layer to ongoing discussions about the management of national team resources and preparations for the global tournament.

Asante Kotoko defender Lord Amoah undergoes successful ACL surgery https://www.adomonline.com/asante-kotoko-defender-lord-amoah-undergoes-successful-acl-surgery/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 10:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655471 Asante Kotoko right-back Lord Amoah has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

The 22-year-old promising defender has been sidelined since Kotoko’s Premier League clash against Young Apostles in March, where he sustained the injury in the second half. Medical assessments later confirmed a combination of an ACL tear and a medial meniscus injury.

In a statement, the club confirmed the successful procedure and outlined the next phase of his recovery.

“Lord Amoah has undergone a successful surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament, an injury he sustained during our Premier League match against Young Apostles,” the club said.

“The right back will now begin his recovery and rehab at the club with support from our medical staff.”

Amoah has been one of Kotoko’s standout performers this season, making 23 appearances and contributing nine goals from defence.

His long-term absence comes at a difficult time for the Porcupine Warriors, who are enduring a poor run of form in the Ghana Premier League. The slump has seen them drop to sixth place, 10 points behind leaders Medeama SC.

The downturn in results has already triggered changes in the technical team, with interim coach Prince Owusu stepping down. Youth trainer Hamza Obeng has since taken over on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.

Kotoko are next in action against Dreams FC in their upcoming league fixture next weekend as they look to steady their season.

2026 WC: Agyemang-Badu unsure of Black Stars’ prospects https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-agyemang-badu-unsure-of-black-stars-prospects/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 09:57:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655352 Former Ghana international Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu has declined to predict how far the Black Stars will go at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing uncertainty over the team’s direction under new leadership.

Ghana are set to make their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, the former U-20 World Cup winner was candid about his reservations.

“For the World Cup, I have to be very frank; I don’t know where we will reach. Let’s see how he will build the team. The kind of players he will bring on board,” Agyemang-Badu said.

He stressed that much will depend on the team’s identity and defensive organisation under the newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz.

“The kind of identity we will have and the kind of defensive setup he will deploy. But from today, it will be very difficult for me to predict whether quarter-finals or semi-finals, whether we are going for the cup or evicted in the group stage.

“It will be very difficult for me,” he added.

Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with guiding the Black Stars beyond the group stage, following disappointing exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations grow for a more competitive showing on football’s biggest stage.

Pitso Mosimane confirms GFA approach before Carlos Queiroz’s appointment https://www.adomonline.com/pitso-mosimane-confirms-gfa-approach-before-carlos-queirozs-appointment/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 09:34:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655324 South African coach Pitso Mosimane has revealed that Ghana made an informal approach to him regarding the Black Stars job ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, though discussions never progressed beyond initial contact.

The highly regarded former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly manager was among the names linked to the vacant position following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March.

Speaking in an interview with Robert Marawa on Marawa Sports World, Mosimane confirmed that the Ghana Football Association had reached out, but stressed that the engagement lacked substance.

“There was a bit of talk. When I asked the office, they said there were talks, but sometimes teams want three names and then decide who they want out of the three,” Mosimane said.

The 61-year-old made it clear that a short-term assignment was never appealing, distancing himself from the possibility of taking charge under such conditions.

“For a call from a Ghana official is not really a serious thing, and also the other thing is, do I really want to go for two months, one game, three games, four games.

“Maybe I don’t want three games, four games right and for whatever reason.”

Mosimane suggested that such opportunities depend on individual perspective, pointing to the eventual appointment of Carlos Queiroz, who has taken charge of the team ahead of the tournament.

“And maybe Carlos [Queiroz] says, ‘ Why not, let me go have fun, let me go to the World Cup again, it depends on how you see it,” he added.

Queiroz was officially unveiled on Thursday and has already begun preparations for the World Cup, where Ghana will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

With Ghana seeking to improve on their group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz has been handed the responsibility of guiding the four-time African champions to a deeper run on football’s biggest stage.

World Cup 2026 injury watch: Key names racing to be ready https://www.adomonline.com/world-cup-2026-injury-watch-key-names-racing-to-be-ready/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 09:10:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655321 With the World Cup fast approaching, several high-profile players are sidelined or in a race against time to prove their fitness.

Injuries have left international managers facing difficult decisions as the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico draws closer to its 11 June start.

Lamine Yamal caused Spain concern when he suffered a hamstring injury in scoring for Barcelona against Celta Vigo on Wednesday – although his club expect him to be fit for the World Cup.

Nonetheless, he has added his name to a growing list of key players with injury troubles as the tournament nears.

And there are some big names on that list.

Germany's goalkeeper Marc André ter Stegen

Marc Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona and Germany)

Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper is fighting to recover from a long-term hamstring problem. The injury has severely limited his preparation, and his chances of being ready for the opening matches in June are fading. His absence would be a major setback for a squad built around experience at major tournaments.

Rodrygo (Real Madrid and Brazil)

Brazil face a significant blow with the Real Madrid forward ruled out after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in March. The five-time world champions will be without one of their most explosive attacking options, with his injury ending any hopes of a tournament comeback.

Cristian Romero (Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina)

The Argentina defender is out for the remainder of the Premier League season with a knee injury. The 27-year-old was visibly upset as he limped off following a collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky during Tottenham’s Premier League defeat at Sunderland in April.

While there is optimism he will recover in time, concerns remain over his lack of recent match action. His aggression and leadership are central to Argentina’s defensive set-up.

Hugo Ekitike of Liverpool is injured during the UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final Second Leg match between Liverpool FC and Paris Saint-Germain FC at Anfield on April 14, 2026 in Liverpool, England.

Hugo Ekitike (Liverpool and France)

France striker Ekitike ruptured his Achilles tendon in April and is not expected to return to action until 2027, ending his World Cup hopes entirely.

Ekitike joined Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt last July and has been one of their standout performers in a difficult season for the club, with 17 goals and six assists in all competitions.

Mohammed Kudus (Tottenham Hotspur and Ghana)

Kudus is awaiting further assessment on a quad injury that could require surgery. Ghana risk losing their key creative figure if recovery takes longer than expected. His availability remains uncertain as crucial decisions loom. The Ghana international has been out for more than three months after limping out of Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Sunderland on 4 January.

Eder Militao (Real Madrid and Brazil)

Militao has been ruled out for the rest of Real Madrid’s season after suffering a hamstring tear. The 28-year-old centre-back is targeting a return for the World Cup, but Brazil’s medical staff are cautious given his recent history of muscle injuries.

Reece James (Chelsea and England)

England defender James is once again dealing with hamstring issues while sidelined at Chelsea. Having missed the past two major tournaments, his hopes depend on avoiding further setbacks. The 26-year-old sustained the injury in a 1-0 Premier League defeat by Newcastle in March. Any delay in recovery would put his place in serious doubt.

Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich and Canada)

Canada’s talisman is once again struggling with the recurring muscle issues that have plagued his recent seasons at Bayern Munich. His explosive pace is central to Canada’s threat, but his body seems to be pushing back at the worst possible moment. If he is not fully fit, Canada’s chances take a massive hit.

Mikel Merino (Arsenal and Spain)

The Arsenal midfielder has been a steady presence for Spain, but a fractured foot has kept him on the sidelines since February. Spain’s medical staff are wary of a premature return.

Wataru Endo (Liverpool and Japan)

Japan captain Endo is coping with a double setback involving his knee and ankle since sustaining the injury that left him in need of surgery during February’s match against Sunderland. He is set to miss the rest of Liverpool’s season and his absence for Japan would leave a big gap in terms of midfield leadership and experience.

Arda Guler (Real Madrid and Turkey)

A hamstring injury has brought Guler’s domestic season to an end. Although he might recover in time for the World Cup, concerns remain over his sharpness and readiness with limited time to regain match fitness.

Estevao Willian (Chelsea and Brazil)

The Chelsea teenage forward is recovering from a hamstring tear and will not feature again for the Blues this season. Brazil remain hopeful, but his lack of recent football makes selection uncertain. The final decision is likely to hinge on his progress in the coming weeks.

Carrick takes long-term view amid rise in sackings https://www.adomonline.com/carrick-takes-long-term-view-amid-rise-in-sackings/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 09:05:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655316 Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick refuses to view the increasing turnover of managers in English football as a reason to change the way he does the job.

The average tenure of a manager in England is now less than two years.

Only 20 current bosses in the top four divisions have been in post longer than the two years and eight months he spent at previous club Middlesbrough.

Remarkably, 20 new bosses have been appointed since Carrick was brought back to Old Trafford exactly 100 days ago, on 13 January, including two at League Two strugglers Barrow.

Liam Rosenior was sacked by Chelsea on Wednesday, four days after Carrick’s United won at Stamford Bridge. He was appointed eight days before the 44-year-old former England midfielder returned to Old Trafford.

Despite this, the United boss is adamant he will not adopt a short-term approach.

“There are two sides to it,” said Carrick.

“There are instant results and the next game being important; but there’s definitely a responsibility, our thinking of what the future looks like and the bigger picture.

“There are all sorts of what-ifs in this world. Half full, half empty? I like to live my life in a positive way.

“I don’t think of what could go wrong, that doesn’t come into it. It’s what can be achieved. What success looks like.”

Success for United this season would be qualifying for the Champions League after a two-year absence.

If they beat Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday, they will need a maximum of two points from their final four games to seal a top-five slot.

After that, the focus will be on United’s hierarchy to decide whether to appoint Carrick on a full-time basis.

Most supporters feel the transformation since Ruben Amorim’s dismissal means he should be given the job.

The man himself insists he is not demanding answers.

“In terms of deadline, it’s not something I’m really chasing,” he said. “It will become clear when it becomes clear.”

Those who argue against giving Carrick the job permanently tend to cite the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as evidence.

That view overlooks the fact Solskjaer is the only United boss since Sir Alex Ferguson to deliver successive top-three finishes, had them top of the Premier League a couple of months before he was sacked and also reached a Europa League final in 2021, which was lost because goalkeeper David de Gea missed a penalty in a shootout defeat by Villarreal.

Carrick was part of the Norwegian’s coaching team and the pair remain close, despite ending up competing to replace Amorim.

He dismisses comparisons with Solskjaer as irrelevant.

“I’ve got the utmost respect for him,” said Carrick. “He’s a close friend of mine and I worked closely with him when I was here. We did a lot of good things and came close.

“You can compare all sorts of different situations with managers, coaches and teams over the years.

“But it’s irrelevant really. It really is. That’s not a negative or a positive. It just doesn’t have a link at all. We’re a different team now, irrespective of who’s in charge.

“Comparisons literally don’t make any difference.”

Injured Lamine Yamal ‘expected to be fit’ for World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/injured-lamine-yamal-expected-to-be-fit-for-world-cup/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 09:02:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655305 Spain forward Lamine Yamal will miss the remainder of Barcelona’s season but is expected to be fit in time for the World Cup.

The 18-year-old sustained a hamstring injury in his left leg during Wednesday’s 1–0 victory over Celta Vigo.

He had given Barcelona the lead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute but then immediately signalled to the bench before falling to the ground, clutching his left hamstring.

He was helped off the pitch by medical staff and headed straight down the tunnel.

The club confirmed the injury on Thursday, stating that Yamal “will follow a conservative treatment plan” and will miss the remainder of the league season, though he is “expected to return in time for the World Cup”.

“This injury leaves me off the field at the time I most wanted to be, and it hurts more than I can explain,” Yamal posted on Instagram on Thursday.

“It hurts not being able to fight with my team-mates, not being able to help when the team needs me. But I believe in them and I know they’re going to drop their souls in every game.

“I’ll be there, even if it’s from the outside, supporting, encouraging and pushing as one more. This is not the end, this is just a break. I’ll come back stronger, more eager than ever, and next season will be better.”

Barcelona, the reigning La Liga champions, are top of the table and nine points clear of rivals Real Madrid, who they play at home on 10 May as one of their remaining six games.

Spain begin their World Cup campaign in Group H against Cape Verde on 15 June, before facing Saudi Arabia on 21 June and Uruguay on 27 June.

Prestianni gets six-match ban for homophobic conduct https://www.adomonline.com/prestianni-gets-six-match-ban-for-homophobic-conduct/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 08:51:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655491 Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has been given a six-game ban by Uefa for homophobic conduct during their Champions League knockout play-off match with Real Madrid in February.

The match at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon was halted for 10 minutes after Real’s Vinicius Jr accused Prestianni of racially abusing him.

Prestianni, 20, denied making a racist comment and said Vinicius misheard him. Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni said that Prestianni told him he had in fact directed a homophobic comment towards the Brazil forward.

Argentina’s Prestianni will be banned for two further games, having already served a provisional one-match ban, with the other three suspended for two years.

European football’s governing body Uefa has made a request to its world counterpart Fifa to extend the ban worldwide.

Vinicius had put Real 1-0 up in the second half against Benfica, before being booked for an excessive celebration.

Following an interaction with Prestianni, 25-year-old Brazilian Vinicius ran over to referee Francois Letexier while gesturing towards the opposition player. Letexier then made the crossed arms gesture, which was introduced by Fifa in May 2024, to signal racist abuse.

Vinicius then walked off the pitch and was followed by his Real Madrid team-mates. After the match, he wrote on his Instagram account: “Racists are, above all, cowards.”

US rights groups urge caution for World Cup visitors https://www.adomonline.com/us-rights-groups-urge-caution-for-world-cup-visitors/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655360 Rights groups have urged fans, players, journalists, and other visitors to this summer’s World Cup to “exercise caution” if travelling to the United States.

More than 120 organisations have collectively issued a ‘travel advisory’ driven by what they say is “the Trump administration’s violent and abusive immigration crackdown”.

“The Trump administration’s rising authoritarianism and increasing violence pose serious risks to all,” the message states.

It adds minority groups in particular are “vulnerable to serious harm”, and is critical of Gianni Infantino, president of football’s world governing body Fifa, for his close ties to US President Donald Trump.

The coalition, which includes the American Civil Liberties Union, has called on Fifa to put pressure on US authorities “to respect the fundamental human rights of every person visiting and attending the games”.

US officials have not yet commented on the groups’ travel advisory, but Fifa says it is “committed to respecting all internationally recognised human rights and shall strive to promote the protection of these rights”.

Fifa said it has a “commitment to human rights across all key activities and actors connected to the tournament”, citing several documents and advisory groups it has set up to address human rights issues.

The rights groups warn travellers about what they say is the potential for denial of entry to the country and risk of arrest, travel restrictions on citizens from dozens of countries, social media screening, racial profiling, and increased surveillance.

There are travel bans on nationals from four of the countries taking part in the tournament: Iran, Haiti, Senegal and Ivory Coast.

The groups say travellers should take steps including removing sensitive information from phones and keeping friends and family updated about their plans when travelling.

The United States is co-hosting the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, with 78 of the 104 scheduled matches at the tournament taking place in the US.

The signatories are critical of Fifa, accusing it of failing to issue “concrete guarantees” on safety for travellers “while its president, Gianni Infantino, has aligned himself closer to the Trump administration”.

In December, Infantino awarded President Trump with Fifa’s inaugural Peace Prize.

An immigration crackdown has been a key focus of the Trump administration, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) having its scope and budget significantly expanded.

ICE has faced criticism for its methods – especially following the fatal shooting of two US citizens who were protesting against the immigration crackdown.

US officials have said ICE agents will be part of World Cup security. Earlier this year, fan group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) told BBC Sport it was “extremely concerned by the ongoing militarisation of police forces in the US”.

Last month, a report from human rights campaign group Amnesty said the World Cup risked becoming “a stage for repression and a platform for authoritarian practices”.

In response to that, the White House’s World Cup Task Force said that the tournament will be “the largest, safest, and most welcoming sporting event in history” and that it was working to deliver an event “that highlights America’s hospitality, commitment to security, and spirit of excellence”.

It promised that fans “can look forward to a smooth, secure, and truly unforgettable tournament”.

Rule change could pave way for Véron Mosengo-Omba to become president of DRC football federation https://www.adomonline.com/rule-change-could-pave-way-for-veron-mosengo-omba-to-become-president-of-drc-football-federation/ Fri, 24 Apr 2026 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655376 Football’s governing body in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (the DRC) has changed eligibility rules for its presidential elections, allowing a university friend of Gianni Infantino to stand.

Véron Mosengo-Omba, who was at university with the Fifa president in Switzerland, is a former general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (Caf), and confirmed his candidacy to be president of the DRC’s football federation, Fecofa, this week.

The election was due to take place on 11 April but has been postponed until next month, with the delay understood to have been because Mosengo-Omba – who surrendered his passport when he left the DRC to study in Europe aged 18 and is a Swiss citizen – only has a diplomatic Congolese passport.

Under Fecofa’s previous statutes he would not have been permitted to stand. However, an amendment allowing any Congolese individual who has previously been involved in football administration to run has been passed. That is expected to be ratified by an electoral commission review in the coming days to allow the 66-year-old, who also previously served as Fifa’s chief member associations officer, to stand.

Asked by the Guardian if the changes had been made to accommodate Mosengo-Omba, a Fecofa spokesperson refused to comment. Mosengo-Omba confirmed he still uses his diplomatic passport but did not respond to a question about whether it had hindered his candidacy.

“Mosengo-Omba does not hold Congolese nationality, only a diplomatic passport; he has never completed the procedures to obtain full Congolese citizenship in all these years, and now … he wants to do so and take over the presidency of our football federation? This is unacceptable,” said Luc Mangala, who is a leading football agent in the country. “Mosengo-Omba has already met with several voters, telling each one that he is the candidate of the president of the republic, Felix Tshisekedi.”

The Caf president, Patrice Motsepe, appeared to confirm this when his departure as general secretary was confirmed last month after a controversial tenure and in the wake of a disputed final of the 2026 African Cup of Nations. “He told me he has been asked by the DR Congo president to go and help with football development in that country,” said Motsepe.

When leaving Caf, Mosengo-Omba had said he was retiring to “devote myself to more personal projects”.

Mosengo-Omba became the ninth and final candidate to confirm he would stand on Monday and will be up against the former Blackburn and Monaco striker, Shabani Nonda, among others. He dismissed the claims regarding the election rule changes but acknowledged that having the support of Tshisekedi would be a “significant advantage” if he is elected.

“Government support is essential for developing sports infrastructure, in particular,” he told the Guardian. “My candidacy scares some because everyone knows precisely that my war horse is the fight against corruption and the misuse of funds intended for football. I have met great success at Caf in this fight, even if much remains to be done. And in DR Congo as elsewhere, there is work to be done.”

Mosengo-Omba was accused by some employees of creating a toxic environment during his time at Caf, although an investigation after staff complaints cleared him of any wrongdoing. Reports last month in the DRC alleged that presidents of the regional leagues were told by the country’s minister for sport, Didier Budimbu, that Mosengo-Omba “must be supported” when he was presented as the candidate endorsed by Tshisekedi at a meeting last month.

Budimbu described those claims as “completely unfounded” in a statement to the Guardian, adding “the individuals eligible to vote in these elections are neither known to me nor close to me”.

Despite the men’s team last month qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in more than half a century, Fecofa has been under a Fifa normalisation committee for almost three years in attempts to address “irregular, unhealthy, and deadlocked” governance, and for the organisation of new elections.

Mosengo-Omba promised in an interview with France 24 last week that he will turn Fecofa “into a paradise” if he is elected. “I served world football, then African football and now I plan to serve the country of my origin,” he said.

We must improve the legacy of Otto Addo – Black Stars Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/we-must-improve-the-legacy-of-otto-addo-black-stars-carlos-queiroz/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 18:18:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655200 New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, Otto Addo, during his official unveiling in Accra, acknowledging the foundation laid before his arrival as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced 73-year-old tactician has signed a short-term four-month deal to lead Ghana into the global tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, taking over from Addo, who was dismissed in March following defeats to Austria and Germany.

Despite his exit, Addo leaves behind a significant legacy, becoming the first coach to guide Ghana to two World Cup qualifications—2022 and 2026.

Under his tenure, the Black Stars also went unbeaten in the 2026 qualifiers, topping Group I with 25 points.

Queiroz was quick to acknowledge that achievement, insisting his role is to build on—not erase—the progress already made.

“We must improve the legacy of the previous coach, Otto Addo. I thank him very much for qualifying Ghana for the World Cup; that is our goal.”

The Portuguese coach stressed a measured and analytical approach rather than sweeping changes, revealing that his technical team is already studying the squad in detail.

“We are studying and analysing everything related to the past of the team in order to improve.”

He also emphasised a frank assessment of player quality and team structure, insisting that selections for the World Cup will be based strictly on merit.

“We are making an honest assessment of where we stand—the value of the players, the value of the team.”

“There is a difference between a good decision and a bad decision in football… we must bring the right players to build the right team.”

Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026 after being drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with steering Ghana beyond the group stage, following exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations rise for a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.

Speaking during his unveiling at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the experienced Portuguese tactician underlined that no player is guaranteed a spot in the national team.

“Nobody owns the national team shirt. That must be clear,” the 73-year-old said.

He added that selection would be based strictly on merit, fitness, and experience.

“The players dream to represent the country, and it is our job to give them a fair and right opportunity. My job is to be sure that the ones who wear the shirt are those who deserve to be there.

“The players I select [would be] capable, fit [and] experienced,” he added.

Ghana will feature at the FIFA World Cup for a fifth time, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with guiding Ghana to a stronger showing on the global stage following group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022.

Carlos Queiroz promises fair chance for local players in Black Stars selection https://www.adomonline.com/carlos-queiroz-promises-fair-chance-for-local-players-in-black-stars-selection/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 17:42:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655189 Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has pledged to give home-based players a genuine opportunity to earn places in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced Portuguese tactician made the assurance during his official unveiling at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where he was introduced as Otto Addo’s replacement on a four-month deal leading into the tournament.

Queiroz said his technical setup will carefully assess all eligible players, both locally and abroad, as part of efforts to assemble a competitive squad for the global showpiece.

“We have one team behind the scenes that is working very hard to collect information about players, either local players or foreign players. There will be a fair opportunity for the local players,” Queiroz said.

He explained that the scouting structure will be split, with one group based in Accra monitoring domestic talent while another tracks players overseas, before final decisions are made on selection.

“One group will stay in Accra, and one group will work abroad, and at the end we will make a decision for the squad,” he added.

The 73-year-old also stressed that selection will be based strictly on merit, highlighting performance, fitness, experience and character as key criteria.

Ghana will make its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Queiroz has been tasked with steering Ghana to a stronger showing on the world stage, following back-to-back group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.

The decision comes in the wake of the official unveiling of new head coach Carlos Queiroz in Accra on Thursday, April 23.

The experienced Portuguese manager is expected to strengthen his backroom staff with five additional appointments, with further details set to be announced in the coming days.

While changes are anticipated, the GFA has opted for continuity by keeping assistant coach Desmond Offei, goalkeepers’ trainer Fatawu Dauda, and high-performance coach John Paintsi within the technical setup under Queiroz.

The 73-year-old coach is expected to remain in Ghana for a few days before travelling to Europe to begin assessing potential squad members ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in a difficult Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

I am a winning coach, says newly unveiled Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-a-winning-coach-says-newly-unveiled-black-stars-coach-carlos-queiroz/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 16:53:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2655182 New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has made it clear that results—not aesthetics—will define his tenure, insisting his sole focus is on winning matches.

The 73-year-old, who has previously managed national teams including Egypt, Iran and Portugal, has been handed a short-term deal ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

His appointment follows the dismissal of Otto Addo by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), despite the former coach securing qualification for the tournament.

The decision came after a string of underwhelming performances that raised concerns over the team’s direction.

Speaking during his official unveiling at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Thursday, April 23, Queiroz dismissed ongoing discussions about his tactical approach, describing himself simply as a coach who delivers victories.

“I am a winning coach. I don’t understand that thing of defend or attack,” the 73-year-old said.

“When we don’t have the ball, we have to fight together, sacrifice, and suffer to recover the ball as fast as possible in order to build up opportunities and score.

“At the end, in Ghana, and the rest of the world, there is only one reason in football, to win,” he added.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the global tournament and face a stern test in Group L, where they are drawn against England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 editions, expectations will be high for a more competitive showing this time, with Queiroz tasked with restoring belief and delivering results on football’s biggest stage.

His appointment comes with high expectations as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking at his unveiling at the Alisa Hotel on Thursday, April 23, Queiroz acknowledged the scale of the task ahead but expressed confidence in his ability to deliver.

“After eight national teams and important competitions, this is the biggest challenge of my life, and I am ready for that.

“I can promise and guarantee that I will bring 40 years of my experience [to the job],” the former Manchester United assistant coach.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

“I wish God blesses me with the right and best results for Ghana, and if it happens as I expect, I will be very happy to give my contribution.”

The former Real Madrid manager also pointed to the country’s deep footballing talent, suggesting that with the right structure and long-term planning, Ghana can rise beyond its reputation as a producer of players.

“This is a country of footballers. I believe that the day Ghana will be able to manage the present and the future in this way, this country will not be only a country of footballers but a country of champions,” he added.

The experienced Portuguese tactician replaces Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties last month following a run of disappointing results in friendly matches against Austria and Germany during the team’s preparations for the global tournament.

Queiroz brings a wealth of international coaching experience, having previously led national teams including Portugal, Colombia and Egypt. His appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move aimed at stabilising the Black Stars and improving their performance on the world stage.

According to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the official unveiling will take place at 1:00 pm at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, where Queiroz is expected to address the media for the first time since taking charge.

He is set to outline his tactical philosophy, discuss his plans for the squad, and respond to questions from journalists as Ghana intensifies preparations for the tournament, which will be hosted across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

I am confident about Black Stars’ chances of winning AFCON 2027 – GFA’s Marketing Director https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-confident-about-black-stars-chances-of-winning-afcon-2027-gfas-marketing-director/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 10:09:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654944 The Director of Marketing at the Ghana Football Association, Jamil Maraby, has expressed strong belief that the Ghana national football team will finally reclaim continental glory at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.

Ghana national football team, four-time African champions, have endured a prolonged title drought since their last triumph in 1982, falling short in finals appearances in 1992, 2010, and 2015.

In remarks published on the GFA’s official website, Maraby backed the current generation to rewrite that narrative, citing their growing experience and cohesion.

“I am very confident and feel Ghana will win the next AFCON,” he declared.

Maraby highlighted the stability within the squad as a major factor behind his optimism, noting that a large portion of the team has remained together over several years, gaining exposure at both continental and global levels.

“About 60 to 70 per cent of the squad remains intact. Many have played in two World Cups, and some have featured in three AFCON tournaments. By 2027, they will be at their peak—around 27 to 28 years. It’s a natural cycle.”

He also placed Ghana’s ambitions within the shifting dynamics of African football, suggesting that the dominance of recent champions could soon give way to a new era.

“Ivory Coast had their chance and took it. Senegal are at the top now, but cycles change, and Ghana will rise again.”

Before their 2027 AFCON campaign, the Black Stars are set to compete at the FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 2027 AFCON tournament will be co-hosted by Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.

Eleven Wonders slapped with indefinite transfer ban over unpaid debt to former player https://www.adomonline.com/eleven-wonders-slapped-with-indefinite-transfer-ban-over-unpaid-debt-to-former-player/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 10:04:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654929 Ghana Premier League side Eleven Wonders FC have been handed an indefinite transfer ban after failing to settle outstanding payments owed to former player Moses Afriyie, despite repeated directives from the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The sanction, which takes effect immediately, applies to both domestic and international transfers and will remain in force until the club has cleared the full amount due.

The ruling follows Eleven Wonders’ continued non-compliance with decisions issued by the GFA Players’ Status Committee, as well as a subsequent enforcement order from the Disciplinary Committee.

Afriyie had earlier lodged a complaint with the GFA, accusing the club of ignoring its financial obligations even after being formally notified and granted ample time to pay.

In response, the Disciplinary Committee initially imposed a fine and granted the club an additional window to settle the debt, cautioning that failure to do so would result in tougher sanctions under Article 15 of the GFA Disciplinary Code.

With the deadline now missed, the Committee has enforced Article 15(2), triggering the transfer ban until all outstanding payments are made.

The development represents a major setback for Eleven Wonders, leaving the club unable to reinforce its squad while the dispute remains unresolved.

Estevao’s World Cup in serious doubt due to Chelsea forward’s hamstring injury https://www.adomonline.com/estevaos-world-cup-in-serious-doubt-due-to-chelsea-forwards-hamstring-injury/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 09:21:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654925 Estevao’s participation at the World Cup with Brazil is in serious doubt due to the hamstring injury the Chelsea forward suffered during Saturday’s defeat by Manchester United.

Sources briefed on the injury say that Estevao has suffered a grade four hamstring injury, which would mean the 18-year-old is highly unlikely to feature at the World Cup. The tournament begins on June 11, with Brazil’s opening game against Morocco two days later.

The Athletic reported on April 18 that Estevao would undergo a scan to determine the severity of the issue. That scan was held on Monday afternoon, with some at Chelsea already fearing the worst before it took place.

Estevao sustained the injury during the 1-0 defeat by Manchester United last Saturday. The 18-year-old limped off in the 16th minute of the game at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior confirming after the game that he was in tears in the dressing room.

The injury likely brings an end to Estevao’s debut season at Chelsea. The Premier League side signed the winger from Palmeiras in May 2024, and he joined the club last summer.

In 36 appearances, he has scored eight goals and provided four assists, with three goals coming in seven Champions League games.

He has established himself as a regular member of Brazil’s national team under Carlo Ancelotti. Estevao has earned 11 senior caps and has scored four goals in his last four international appearances.

Following Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea have four Premier League matches remaining this season, as well as an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United next Sunday. As well as Morocco, Brazil face Haiti and Scotland in Group B.

Respecting the ball, losing the players – inside Rosenior’s reign https://www.adomonline.com/respecting-the-ball-losing-the-players-inside-roseniors-reign/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 09:16:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654899 Less than four months after he signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with Chelsea, Liam Rosenior’s stint at Stamford Bridge has come to an abrupt end.

The 41-year-old replaced Enzo Maresca in January. Ten defeats in 23 matches later, he has gone.

Rosenior arrived with a burgeoning reputation for playing attractive football, having led Ligue 1 Strasbourg into Europe for the first time in eight years during his debut season in France.

So where did it all go wrong at Chelsea?

Rosenior’s tenure ended less than 24 hours after he publicly criticised his players in the wake of Tuesday’s defeat at Brighton – an episode that lay at the heart of what ultimately went wrong for the Englishman.

It was not for a lack of trying. Rosenior often defended his players, sometimes to his own detriment.

His comments about the team “respecting the ball” followed an attempt to justify a pre-match huddle – an idea from his leadership group, rather than Rosenior himself – in which the players encircled referee Paul Tierney before a 1-0 defeat by Newcastle at Stamford Bridge in March.

That episode may ultimately define his tenure. It marked the start of a run of five defeats without scoring, Chelsea’s worst such sequence in 114 years, leading to his exit.

But there were signs in the early days of Rosenior’s short reign that the dressing room were unimpressed with him.

Despite relative success at Strasbourg, the former Hull City boss had never managed in the Premier League.

Views within the squad were mixed, but the Spanish-speaking contingent were particularly unconvinced. That was reflected in comments made by Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez during the March international break, in which both talked up moves to Spain.

Multiple sources told BBC Sport that leadership meetings became increasingly quiet as Rosenior’s tenure began to unravel, with the head coach struggling to generate the level of participation he had hoped for.

Further evidence was provided by team news leaks around both legs of their Champions League last-16 tie against Paris St-Germain, which sources say originated from within the dressing room. A leak before Rosenior’s final match at Brighton remarkably seemed to come from Cucurella’s barber.

There was also footage of players on a near-weekly basis appearing to snub Rosenior’s inexperienced backroom staff, including a recent video that showed Wesley Fofana ignoring assistant James Walker after a home defeat by Manchester United. One player even gave him the nickname “the supply teacher”.

Privately, sources close to several players have confirmed that Rosenior began to lose authority as he attempted to implement more of his own ideas, having initially leaned on Maresca’s blueprint during his first six weeks in charge, amid limited time on the training pitch.

Key tactical decisions also came under scrutiny. One source close to PSG said they felt Rosenior’s approach over the two legs of the tie was too open, allowing the French champions to exploit Chelsea in an 8-2 aggregate win. The decision to start young centre-back Mamadou Sarr at right-back also proved costly in the second leg, with his error leading to an early Khvicha Kvaratskhelia goal as PSG won 3-0 on the night.

In addition, Moises Caicedo was said to be covering too much ground following a shift from a double pivot – two defensive midfielders – to a single pivot.

It was not all negative. Most players were said to regard Rosenior as a thoroughly decent person and he was known, according to one source, to be more popular with English members of the squad. However, injuries to Trevoh Chalobah, Cole Palmer and Reece James later in his spell further complicated matters.

Chelsea decided to act after Brighton

There were glum faces in the directors’ box as Chelsea failed to compete against Brighton, in what one senior source described as a turning point in the club’s stance on Rosenior.

Until then, those responsible for his appointment had hoped he would come good – at least enough to steady the ship until the end of the season.

But, ultimately, it was felt Chelsea would have a better chance without Rosenior in charge for the remaining matches, both in their bid to qualify for European competition and in their pursuit of FA Cup success, with a new voice required.

Unlike Maresca, Rosenior did not retain the same positive relationships within the hierarchy – something reflected in his exit statement, which was 68 words shorter than that of his predecessor.

It was a decision taken to benefit Chelsea in the short term, but one also viewed as potentially aiding the club’s long-term ambitions.

Who next for Chelsea and BlueCo?

Chelsea remain one of European football’s biggest draws – and despite this season’s difficulties, high-profile managers will inevitably be attracted to the vacancy.

Marco Silva, the Fulham manager, is set to be a candidate for the position this summer.

The Portuguese’s deal expires at the end of the season, meaning Chelsea would not have to pay Fulham or negotiate to release him from a contract.

The fact he is represented by agent Jorge Mendes, who has a close relationship with Chelsea’s ownership, would also ease any move for Silva.

That said, sources have told BBC Sport that working within the club’s current model is causing hesitation from coaches who would normally be considered for the role.

For instance, outgoing Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola is of interest to Chelsea’s leadership group – but those close to the Spaniard have indicated he will prioritise stability at his next post – not a trait associated with Chelsea at present.

In addition, the 43-year-old is understood to want to return with his family to Spain after deciding against signing a new Bournemouth deal.

Edin Terzic, who led Borussia Dortmund to a Champions League final in 2024, is under consideration, while former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is earning rave reviews at Serie A club Como.

Xabi Alonso is out of work, having left Real Madrid earlier this season.

The question is whether any of those names, if approached, would express reservations about working within the Chelsea recruitment model – of bringing in younger players who can develop. And then there is the club’s recent history of dispensing with managers.

That said, Chelsea are understood to be contemplating a change in approach this summer with a view to targeting more experienced signings to complement their young team.

Landing more established talent this summer may be easier said than done.

The club recently posted a £262.4m loss for the 2024-25 season – the highest pre-tax loss in Premier League history.

That, coupled with the prospect of missing out on Champions League football, is expected to restrict spending in this summer’s transfer window.

The club remain confident they can attract the right coach, though they are not in active talks with any candidates and do not expect to appoint a full-time replacement until the end of the season.

They are looking for someone who can win matches and, ultimately, deliver trophies.

Carlos Queiroz arrives in Accra for official unveiling as Black Stars head coach https://www.adomonline.com/carlos-queiroz-arrives-in-accra-for-official-unveiling-as-black-stars-head-coach/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 22:04:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654799 Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has arrived in Ghana ahead of his official unveiling scheduled for Thursday, April 23.

The experienced Portuguese tactician touched down at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday evening and is set to be formally introduced at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.

Queiroz takes over on a short-term, four-month contract following the dismissal of Otto Addo, whose tenure ended after a string of inconsistent results.

The former Real Madrid, Manchester United, Portugal, and Iran manager has been tasked with leading Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States later this year.

Renowned for his extensive World Cup experience, Queiroz guided Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010 and managed Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. He also played a role in South Africa’s qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup.

As part of official protocol, the Ghana Football Association will present him to Sports Minister Kofi Adams following his unveiling.

Queiroz is expected to quickly settle into his role, beginning with Ghana’s preparatory fixtures against Mexico and Wales on June 2.

Ghana will compete in Group L at the World Cup, opening their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

His appointment is seen as a strategic move to steady the Black Stars and revive their fortunes after disappointing early exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.

Man City win to go top and relegate Burnley https://www.adomonline.com/man-city-win-to-go-top-and-relegate-burnley/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 21:43:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654796 Manchester City continued their charge towards the Premier League title with victory at Turf Moor to move Pep Guardiola’s side top of the table and relegate Burnley back to the Championship.

City have hit form at the right time and are looking in ominous mood, clawing back nine points on Arsenal in less than two weeks to narrowly climb to the summit on goals scored.

Guardiola’s men had not been in the number one spot since the opening week of the campaign, but an 11-game unbeaten streak has led to them overtaking the Gunners with five games left.

Top scorer Erling Haaland grabbed the opener after just five minutes, running clear following Jeremy Doku’s pass and dinking a delightful finish over the advancing Martin Dubravka, and he struck the post in the second half.

The visitors could have scored moments before but the excellent Rayan Cherki’s thumping effort was brilliantly tipped on to the crossbar by Dubravka.

City were being wasteful in front of goal, knowing goal difference could play a factor come May, with Nico O’Reilly’s header being batted out by Dubravka and Rayan Ait-Nouri blazing over after a fine team move.

The Clarets, meanwhile, had their chances to prolong an inevitable ending to the season – Jaidon Anthony cutting inside and curling a shot at goal which was pushed away by Gianluigi Donnarumma, while Zian Flemming dragged wide from a promising position.

But the loss means Scott Parker’s side will join bottom club Wolves in the second tier next season, dropping down into the Championship for the second time in three years.

Liam Rosenior sacked by Chelsea after five successive Premier League defeats https://www.adomonline.com/liam-rosenior-sacked-by-chelsea-after-five-successive-premier-league-defeats/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 16:43:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654711 Chelsea have parted company with head coach Liam Rosenior after a damaging run of form.

Rosenior, 41, took over in January on a deal until June 2032 but leaves fewer than four months later.

Although the club did not intend to review his position until much further down the line, a decline in results have dictated otherwise.

Chelsea have named Calum McFarlane as interim coach until the end of the season, when there will be a stronger market for permanent solutions and a fifth full-time boss under their BlueCo ownership group. McFarlane previously took the role following Enzo Maresca’s departure on New Year’s Day and oversaw the 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

“This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future,” a Chelsea statement read.

Tuesday’s defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion made it five straight league losses without a goal scored, which last happened to Chelsea in 1912.

Rosenior heavily criticised himself, the players and their performance in post-match interviews, while the Chelsea hierarchy spent Wednesday considering his future.

They are likely to have been deliberating who would give Chelsea the best chance of winning Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United and then earning qualification for next season’s Champions League.

Rosenior won each of his first four Premier League games at the helm but a 2-2 draw at home to Leeds United on February 10 started a run of nine league matches which brought just one victory and five points.

That run of form has seen Chelsea drop to seventh in the Premier League — seven points off a top-five spot and guaranteed Champions League qualification — and just three points above 12th-place Fulham.

Rosenior also oversaw an 8-2 aggregate defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16, and lost in both legs against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.

Chelsea have yet to beat a Premier League team in their run to the FA Cup semi-finals. After facing Leeds on Sunday, Chelsea are next in league action at home to Nottingham Forest on May 4, before finishing their campaign against Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland.

GFA reschedules Matchday 30 games after tragic death of Dominic Frimpong https://www.adomonline.com/gfa-reschedules-matchday-30-games-after-tragic-death-of-dominic-frimpong/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 16:34:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654681 The Ghana Football Association has announced that Matchday 30 of the Ghana Premier League has been rescheduled to Wednesday, May 6, 2026, following the tragic death of forward Dominic Frimpong.

The decision comes after Frimpong lost his life in a robbery attack on the team bus of Berekum Chelsea FC. The incident occurred after the club had honoured their league fixture against FC Samartex.

In a statement, the GFA said the postponement is not only in honour of the late player but also to give Berekum Chelsea additional time to recover from the traumatic incident.

The revised schedule will allow the football community across the country to mourn and pay tribute to Frimpong during what has been described as a deeply difficult period.

According to the GFA, the Premier League will continue with Matchday 31 fixtures between May 1 and May 4, 2026, while a new date for the postponed Matchday 30 matches will be confirmed in due course.

All remaining fixtures from Matchday 31 through Matchday 34 are expected to proceed as originally planned.

As part of the tributes, players and officials across all Matchday 31 fixtures will wear black armbands, with a minute of silence to be observed at every venue in honour of Frimpong.

The gesture is also intended to support his family, friends, and former clubs, including Berekum Chelsea and Aduana FC.

Why I haven’t started coaching — Asamoah Gyan https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-havent-started-coaching-asamoah-gyan/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 16:02:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654672 Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has opened up on why he has yet to transition into coaching, despite holding the required qualifications to step into the dugout.

Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s finest footballers and a standout figure on the African and European stages, the former striker says the demands of coaching have so far kept him away from the profession.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the ex-Sunderland A.F.C. and Al Ain FC forward stressed that coaching requires a level of commitment he is not currently prepared to give.

“The reason why I haven’t started my coaching thing is all about dedication. When you dedicate yourself to coaching, you will have time for the kids,” Gyan said.

Although he possesses a UEFA Licence B, Gyan revealed that his attention is firmly fixed on his business ventures for now, putting any immediate coaching ambitions on hold.

“I have a UEFA License B, but I’m not into coaching because I have other businesses to attend to. Coaching is about dedication, and you have to focus and teach.”

Gyan enjoyed an illustrious playing career, representing Ghana at three FIFA World Cups — the 2006 FIFA World Cup, 2010 FIFA World Cup, and 2014 FIFA World Cup — cementing his status as one of the country’s most iconic football figures.

The three East African nations will jointly stage the continental showpiece under the “PAMOJA AFCON” brand and are currently holding a high-level two-day workshop in Kampala.

The meeting brings together football federation officials, government representatives and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The workshop, attended by a CAF delegation led by Acting Secretary General Samson Adamu, is reviewing progress on preparations while addressing key operational challenges.

Discussions are focused on ensuring all host nations remain on track to deliver a successful tournament on schedule.

Uganda’s Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the project.

“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Uganda and on my own behalf, I reaffirm our commitment to host AFCON in 2027 in line with the agreement,” he said.

“I assure you that the three governments are committed to providing the resources required to ensure this tournament takes place as scheduled.”

Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed underscored the broader significance of the event, stressing the importance of what remains after the final whistle.

“What happens after 2027 will define us. The legacy we leave behind for future generations will be critical,” he said.

“This requires sacrifice, longer hours and commitment beyond personal interests.”

The Kampala workshop is expected to produce concrete measures to strengthen coordination among the three host nations as they push forward with preparations for one of Africa’s most ambitious sporting events.

Gerald Asamoah names favourites to win 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/gerald-asamoah-names-favourites-to-win-2026-world-cup/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 14:04:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654554 Former Germany international Gerald Asamoah has pointed to France and Spain as the standout contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also warning that traditional powerhouses Germany, Argentina and Brazil remain firmly in the mix.

The tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, is already generating intense debate over which nation will emerge victorious in football’s biggest competition.

Asamoah, who was born in Mampong, Ghana, and moved to Germany at the age of 12, speaking to Flashscore.com in an interview as the tournament builds up, said, “France is a strong side and also Spain.”

“I wouldn’t put Germany right at the top, although they can always surprise. Then you have Argentina, with great team spirit, especially with Lionel Messi. Brazil are always unpredictable, you never quite know what you’ll get from them. But if you ask me, I think it could come down to France and Spain. Spain, in particular, are very good at building a team.”

Gerald Asamoah made history in 2001 as the first African-born Black player to represent Germany at the senior level.

Over his international career, he earned 43 caps, scored six goals, and featured in two World Cups, finishing runner-up in 2002 and third on home soil in 2006.

With the expanded 48-team format set for its debut, expectations are rising for one of the most unpredictable and competitive editions of the tournament in modern history.

2026 WC: Senegal and Morocco are Africa’s biggest threats – Gerald Asamoah https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-senegal-and-morocco-are-africas-biggest-threats-gerald-asamoah/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 13:57:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654524 Former Germany international Gerald Asamoah has pointed out Senegal and Morocco as Africa’s strongest candidates to make a deep impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Senegalese side tipped as the most likely to spring a major surprise.

Speaking to Flashscore about the continent’s prospects at the expanded 48-team tournament, Asamoah was asked which of Africa’s 10 qualified teams could go the furthest or cause the biggest shock on the global stage.

He stressed that success would depend less on individual talent and more on team cohesion and identity.

“It’s not just about individuals; the unity in that team is special,” he said.

Asamoah singled out Senegal’s leadership core, highlighting the influence of experienced defender Kalidou Koulibaly, and praised the squad’s collective spirit as a key factor that continues to keep them competitive despite gradual changes within the team.

“Players like Kalidou Koulibaly have been key, and even though it’s unclear how long some of their stars will remain, that spirit keeps them competitive.”

“Morocco also has a very strong team, but if I had to pick one African side that could surprise again, I would go with Senegal,” he added.

While Morocco remain one of Africa’s most consistent performers following their historic run to the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Asamoah suggested Senegal currently hold a slight edge in terms of tournament threat.

Morocco, led by stars such as Achraf Hakimi, have maintained their tactical discipline and organisational strength, keeping them firmly among the continent’s elite.

However, Asamoah’s assessment reflects a growing sentiment that Senegal’s blend of experience, unity and resilience could once again make them Africa’s most formidable challengers on the world stage.

In the group stage draw, Morocco will face Brazil, Haiti and Scotland in Group C, while Senegal are set to take on Norway, Iraq and France in Group I.

Liam Rosenior position increasingly uncertain at Chelsea https://www.adomonline.com/liam-rosenior-position-increasingly-uncertain-at-chelsea/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 13:25:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654567 Liam Rosenior’s position as Chelsea head coach is becoming increasingly uncertain following Tuesday’s damaging 3-0 defeat by Brighton.

Last week, Rosenior received public and private backing from the club’s hierarchy but on Wednesday none was forthcoming from BBC sources.

In addition, a number of players are understood to be unconvinced by the 41-year-old, who moved to Chelsea from their French partner club Strasbourg just over three months ago.

The Brighton defeat was a fifth successive league loss without scoring, their worst run for 114 years.

Fans turned on Rosenior at the Amex Stadium, while the head coach publicly criticised his players after the loss.

He said his his team’s performance in the defeat by Brighton was both “indefensible” and “unacceptable”.

Chelsea are seventh in the Premier League, five points adrift of a top-five spot and Champions League qualification, with four matches remaining.

They face Leeds in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday at 15:00 BST.

Rosenior signed a five-and-a-half-year deal in early January following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Before the Brighton defeat, Rosenior said he felt “100%” support from the club’s ownership.

Last week, influential co-owner Behdad Eghbali said the hierarchy remain behind Rosenior, adding: “Of course, it’s a results business, but we think he can be successful long term.”

Players frustrations

Rosenior is becoming a point of frustration, according to multiple figures close to Chelsea players.

The extent of that frustration varies. Some describe him as a friendly character who means well, while others enjoyed working with him at his previous club, Strasbourg, part of the same BlueCo ownership group.

Others, notably several Spanish-speaking players, are understood to have preferred working under Maresca. That was reflected in interviews given by Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez.

Decisions to rotate goalkeepers and limit minutes for certain players, including Josh Acheampong, who often features briefly from the bench, have caused some discontent.

Perhaps most concerning is the atmosphere within the leadership group. One source inside Chelsea said senior players are often quiet when invited to give their views during near-daily team meetings.

Rosenior is not the only issue at Chelsea. Players are also concerned about the financial consequences of failing to qualify for the Champions League again while on incentive-based contracts.

Others have broader frustrations, having joined a club they believed would challenge for trophies but which is now consistently falling short.

Chelsea would argue that forward Cole Palmer has publicly reaffirmed his commitment to the club in the past week, while midfielder Moises Caicedo has signed a new contract. Captain Reece James has also recently extended his deal.

Those deals were sorted before this five game losing run.

What do fans think?

Supporters, like the players, have expressed differing views, but the widespread anger among the fan base has been largely directed at the club’s American owners.

A growing but still fringe protest movement, Not A Project CFC, attracted more than 500 fans who marched to Stamford Bridge before Saturday’s defeat by Manchester United.

It harked back to the end of last season, when chanting against the ownership began. Chelsea Supporters’ Trust has also written an open letter to the club highlighting its concerns.

A further Fans’ Forum meeting is scheduled to take place this week.

However, it was only on Tuesday that Rosenior was drawn into the anger, with expletive-laden chants directed towards him from the away end. His predecessors, Maresca and Mauricio Pochettino, also faced similar treatment, but not so early in their tenures.

Mohammed Camara banned five matches and fined GHS 20,000 for misconduct https://www.adomonline.com/mohammed-camara-banned-five-matches-and-fined-ghs-20000-for-misconduct/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 11:05:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654399 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) Disciplinary Committee has handed Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Mohamed Camara a five-match suspension and a GHS 20,000 fine following a series of misconduct charges.

The sanctions stem from Kotoko’s Matchday 25 defeat to Karela United FC at the Tamale Sports Stadium on March 8, 2026.

According to the official GFA verdict released on April 21, Camara was found guilty of unsporting behaviour and physically assaulting the match referee after the final whistle.

In addition to the five-game ban, which takes immediate effect, Camara must pay the GHS 20,000 fine within 14 days or face further disciplinary action. The committee also issued a stern warning to the player regarding his future conduct on the pitch.

Asante Kotoko’s Welfare Officer, Amos Frimpong, was also handed a 10-match ban and fined GHS 20,000 by the Disciplinary Committee for unsporting behaviour towards match officials.

The Porcupine Warriors will now have to navigate a crucial phase of the season without Camara, with Hamza Obeng set to take charge for the remainder of the campaign following Prince Yaw Owusu’s resignation.

The postponement was necessitated by the release of several key players from both teams for national team duties.

According to the FA, the decision was taken to ensure both finalists are able to compete at full strength, preserving the competitive integrity of the final.

Hasaacas Ladies, one of the most successful sides in Ghanaian women’s football, will be targeting yet another piece of silverware to add to their decorated history.

Army Ladies, meanwhile, will be keen to make a strong statement as they chase the coveted title.

The final will kick off at 2:00 pm, with a strong turnout of supporters expected at Kukurantumi Ohene Park for the high-stakes encounter.

Hudson-Odoi to miss the rest of the season after quadriceps injury https://www.adomonline.com/hudson-odoi-to-miss-the-rest-of-the-season-after-quadriceps-injury/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 10:45:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654350 Callum Hudson-Odoi will miss the remainder of the season after sustaining a right quadriceps injury, dealing a major setback to Nottingham Forest’s campaign.

The former Chelsea FC winger picked up the injury during Forest’s Europa League quarter-final clash against FC Porto last Thursday.

His absence is expected to be a significant blow for Forest as they push on in Europe, with the 25-year-old having become a key attacking figure for the side this season.

Hudson-Odoi, who remains eligible to represent the Ghana national football team, had recently been linked with a potential call-up ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the injury now places any immediate international involvement in doubt as he shifts focus to recovery.

In a statement released via the club’s social media channels, Nottingham Forest confirmed the winger has undergone surgery and has begun rehabilitation.

“Following further specialist consultation, the winger has undergone surgery today and will commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately.”

“Callum is expected to return to full training during the pre-season period and everyone at the Club wishes him a speedy recovery.”

Hudson-Odoi later took to social media to reassure supporters, confirming the procedure was successful while expressing disappointment at his premature end to the season.

“Surgery was successful, but definitely not the way I wanted to end the season. But with God’s timing and plan, hopefully I’ll be back stronger and better than before. Thank you for your continued support and messages. I appreciate all the love, and let’s get the recovery started so I can get back out there doing what I love. No pain, no gain.”

Jordan Ayew, Fatawu Issahaku to play in League One as Leicester City are relegated https://www.adomonline.com/jordan-ayew-fatawu-issahaku-to-play-in-league-one-as-leicester-city-are-relegated/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 10:39:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654346 Ghanaian duo Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku are set to feature in England’s League One next season after Leicester City were relegated from the Championship.

The Foxes’ fate was sealed on Tuesday night following a dramatic draw against Hull City at the King Power Stadium.

Needing a victory to keep their survival hopes alive, Leicester endured a shaky start and fell behind in the first half after goalkeeper Asmir Begović made an error that gifted Hull the opening goal.

The hosts responded after the break, with Issahaku winning a penalty after being brought down in the box. Jordan Ayew calmly converted from the spot to level the score and reignite belief among the home supporters.

Momentum appeared to swing in Leicester’s favour when Luke Thomas fired them into the lead from close range. However, Hull refused to back down, and Oli McBurnie struck an equaliser that ultimately confirmed Leicester’s drop to the third tier.

Despite a late surge, including Patson Daka rattling the crossbar, Leicester could not find the decisive goal.

The result caps a disappointing campaign for the club, with relegation marking a significant setback for both the team and its players.

Players can celebrate how they want – Guardiola https://www.adomonline.com/players-can-celebrate-how-they-want-guardiola/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 09:07:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654340 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his players can “celebrate however you want” in response to criticism from some pundits for his side’s reaction to beating Arsenal on Sunday.

They celebrated exuberantly at full-time, with former England captain Wayne Rooney telling Match of the Day it was “a little bit premature”, while ex-Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy called it “excessive”.

City’s 2-1 victory allowed them to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to just three points and they will go top if they win at Burnley on Wednesday (20:00 BST).

“I see that game and we had to sweat and fight to beat them because they have everything,” said Guardiola.

“They are a top team, a contender to win the Champions League and top of the Premier League.

“When I’m on the sidelines and seeing how Arsenal is playing, I give incredible credit.”

While disconsolate Arsenal players were slumped over at the end, City convened in a huddle with supporters in the stands wildly celebrating a massive three points.

Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma jumped into the crowd and match-winner Erling Haaland took off his shirt to join his team-mates on a lap of appreciation around the pitch, which City tend to do after each home game.

Meanwhile, a large banner with the words ‘panic on the streets of London’ was unfurled in the south stand of Etihad Stadium at full-time.

“I think it was a little bit over the top,” said Rooney. “[There are] six games to go for City. It is obviously a big win. But I also think for Arsenal they have to pick themselves up from that. It was a bit premature and might come back to bite them.”

Murphy said: “If you’re an Arsenal fan or player, they [celebrations] looked a bit excessive, like maybe they had already won it.

“I think it was more a celebration of realising that they are in this and it is in their own hands. They have beaten the opposition, sent out a warning and message that they are here and ‘we are back with you’.”

Mikel Arteta’s side have been top of the table for more than 200 days, while City have only spent six days at the summit – following their opening day 4-0 thrashing of Wolves.

City have the psychological edge over Arsenal, having won against them in the league on Sunday and beaten them at Wembley last month to lift the Carabao Cup.

Next, they come up against a Burnley side that have won just four games all season and will be relegated to the Championship with a defeat on Wednesday.

Guardiola said: “When they celebrated, people can say whatever stupid things they want to say, they celebrated because they know the value of the opponent. They knew if we didn’t win it would be ‘bye bye’.

“They won and still we are there. How can they not celebrate it? As much as you respect the opponent and the fans of the opponent, celebrate however you want. Wait until the end of the season to celebrate? Come on.

“I said to them ‘every single game go to our fans’ and enjoy the moment. What sense is not to live it? You have to celebrate just once if you win? And if you don’t win you cry all the time? Come on.

“Of course we are not going to celebrate it in the middle of the week if we win 3-0 or 4-0 and the opponent are different. Everybody knew that game. It was a final. Especially for us. Maybe not for them but for us it was a final and of course you have to celebrate it.”

Chelsea suffer fifth loss in row without scoring as Brighton coast https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-suffer-fifth-loss-in-row-without-scoring-as-brighton-coast/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 09:02:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654332 Brighton produced a dominant 3-0 win to leapfrog Chelsea in the Premier League, boosting their European hopes while piling further misery on struggling visiting head coach Liam Rosenior.

Goals from Ferdi Kadioglu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck lifted Brighton into sixth place, while Chelsea have now lost five consecutive league matches without scoring for the first time since 1912.

Brighton overwhelmed Chelsea in the opening stages of the match.

Kaoru Mitoma almost replicated his goal at Tottenham last weekend, volleying Pascal Gross’ shot first time, only for Robert Sanchez to make the save inside the opening two minutes.

Brighton then scored from the resulting corner when Kadioglu struck a low volley after capitalising on a loose attempted clearance by Jorrel Hato from Gross’ delivery in the third minute.

The chances kept coming for the hosts. Jan Paul van Hecke’s header was saved, Hinshelwood had an effort cleared off the line after a calamitous wayward pass from Sanchez, while Georginio Rutter fired over when from inside the box.

Chelsea were eventually punished again, as Hinshelwood made amends by sweeping home Brighton’s second goal in the 56th minute from Rutter’s pass.

Such was the one-way traffic, Chelsea managed just one attempt of any kind in the opening 40 minutes – a speculative, blocked effort from Trevoh Chalobah on the edge of the box. Chants of “we’ve had a shot” followed from the away supporters after Romeo Lavia fired wide shortly after half-time, before frustration turned towards head coach Rosenior.

There were late attempts from Alejandro Garnacho and fellow substitute Marc Guiu, who both fired wide late on, but Brighton could have scored more in the second half through two saved Kadioglu shots.

And they did get a third when two subsitutes combined down the left, with Maxim de Cuyper feeding Welbeck to fire home his 13th goal of the season into the roof of the net.

It was a memorable night for the in-form Seagulls, who moved above Chelsea into sixth place, while the Blues look increasingly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League and could drop into the bottom half of the table once all fixtures this round have been completed.

Mbappe and Vinicius Jr score as Real cut Barca’s lead https://www.adomonline.com/mbappe-and-vinicius-jr-score-as-real-cut-barcas-lead/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 08:58:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654328 Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior scored either side of half-time as Real Madrid cut Barcelona’s lead at the top of La Liga to six points with a 2-1 win over relegation-threatened Alaves.

Alvaro Arbeloa’s side, playing for the first time since being knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Bayern Munich, ended a run of two league games without a win.

But Barca have the chance to reinstate their nine-point lead on Wednesday evening when they host Celta Vigo, with just six games to go.

Real are on course for only their fifth trophyless season this century – 2004-05, 2005-06, 2009-10, and 2020-21 being the only four.

But with Arbeloa’s future reportedly uncertain, winning La Liga may be the only way he keeps his job for next season.

It was French striker Mbappe who opened the scoring at the Bernabeu in the 30th minute, with a smart finish for his 24th league goal of the season.

Six minutes into the second half, Brazil winger Vinicius doubled Real’s lead. He latched onto Federico Valverde’s pass to smash into the bottom corner for his 12th of the campaign.

Alaves halved the deficit with the last kick of the game through striker Tony Martinez.

Real still have to travel to Barcelona in May for La Liga’s second El Clasico of the season, but are relying on Hansi Flick’s leaders to slip up elsewhere.

Up next for Real is a trip to Real Betis on Friday night, while Alaves host Mallorca a day later.

Real Madrid’s Tchouameni on Man Utd radar https://www.adomonline.com/real-madrids-tchouameni-on-man-utd-radar/ Wed, 22 Apr 2026 07:12:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654451 Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni has emerged as one of the international midfielders Manchester United are monitoring as they look to address their priority position this summer.

After focusing on their forward options and, eventually, the goalkeeping position last year, United want to target midfield reinforcements at the end of the current campaign.

Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba of Brighton and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton are three players who have been mentioned regularly. They have the Premier League experience that has proved so successful this term through the arrivals of Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.

However, doubts have been cast over Wharton’s suitability as his playing profile is similar to that of Kobbie Mainoo, who is close to agreeing terms over a lucrative contract extension.

United are also looking overseas and, among a number of players, Tchouameni is one of those on their radar.

The 26-year-old’s contract is not due to expire until 2028 and Real are reportedly keen on extending that.

However, in what promises to be a summer of change at the Bernabeu following a disappointing campaign that looks certain to see them end without a trophy, they could be open to a sizeable offer.

United were interested in Tchouameni when he left Monaco in 2022, but the player opted to join Real, where he has become one of the most effective midfield players in the world.

Chelsea’s unexpected collapse has allowed Michael Carrick’s side to move to the brink of Champions League qualification.

Victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday would leave United needing one positive result from their remaining four games to seal a return to Europe’s elite club competition after a two-year absence.

With two high earners departing in Casemiro and Jadon Sancho, there will be space on United’s wage bill even if it is not yet clear if Barcelona will take up their option to sign Marcus Rashford for 30m euros (£26.1m) before the 15 June deadline.

Black Queens move up in latest FIFA Rankings https://www.adomonline.com/black-queens-move-up-in-latest-fifa-rankings/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 14:22:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654103 Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have made a notable leap in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, rising to 59th place from their previous 62nd position.

The upward movement reflects a string of encouraging performances in recent outings, underlining the team’s steady progress and growing confidence on the international stage.

It also signals renewed momentum within the squad as efforts to rebuild and strengthen the team begin to yield results.

On the continental front, the Black Queens continue to underline their pedigree, holding firm as one of Africa’s top sides, ranked third in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standings.

The position keeps Ghana among the elite in women’s football across the continent.

The latest improvement is expected to serve as a timely boost for the team ahead of the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), a tournament that also doubles as a qualification pathway for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Carlos Queiroz to stay in hotel as GFA converts official Black Stars coach’s residence into office https://www.adomonline.com/carlos-queiroz-to-stay-in-hotel-as-gfa-converts-official-black-stars-coachs-residence-into-office/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 13:05:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654065 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz will be accommodated in a hotel upon his arrival in the country, after the official residence previously designated for the national team coach was repurposed.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Sports Nite, GFA’s Senior Manager, Communications, Sheikh Tophic Sienu, explained that the five-bedroom property in Accra’s Airport Residential Area, originally handed over by the Sports Ministry in 2018 for use by the Black Stars coach, has now been converted into office space.

“The official house allocated for the Black Stars coach has been converted into office space,” he said.

“The decision will be taken in relation to that, but for his first time coming to Ghana, he will be accommodated in a hotel.”

The residence was initially provided to reduce government spending on accommodation for the national team’s head coach.

However, Sienu defended the decision to repurpose the facility, describing it as part of a broader effort to strengthen Ghana’s football administration.

“We have had coaches who have Ghanaian lineages, who were already having accommodation in Ghana, so the building wasn’t in much use, but we needed to make proper use of the apartment,” he said.

“So we converted the spaces not in use for the Technical Hub. In a positive sphere, it was done because we wanted to help develop Ghana’s football and make it better.”

Carlos Queiroz, who has signed a four-month deal to replace Otto Addo ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is expected to be officially unveiled as Black Stars head coach on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

2026 WC: John Paintsil relieved from Black Stars role as GFA reshapes technical team https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-john-paintsil-relieved-from-black-stars-role-as-gfa-reshapes-technical-team/ Tue, 21 Apr 2026 12:41:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2654017 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has reportedly dismissed Black Stars high-performance coach John Paintsil as part of a wide-ranging restructuring of the national team’s technical setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Paintsil, who joined the senior national team’s backroom staff following the reappointment of Otto Addo in March 2024, has now become one of several figures affected by the ongoing shake-up triggered by Ghana’s inconsistent form in the build-up to the tournament.

The reshuffle has seen multiple changes to the Black Stars’ technical bench in recent months. Desmond Ofei was earlier brought in to replace Paintsil during the World Cup qualifying campaign, while Alain Ravera and Kim Lars Björkegren were later added as assistant coaches ahead of the finals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Paintsil was subsequently reassigned as the team’s high-performance coach.

However, tensions within the setup intensified after back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany in March, results that led to the departure of head coach Otto Addo, along with technical advisor and GFA Director of Football Winfried Schäfer.

The latest decision involving Paintsil is understood to form part of a broader effort by the Ghana Football Association to reset and stabilise the technical structure before the global showpiece.

In a parallel development, veteran coach Carlos Queiroz has been appointed on a short-term deal as Ghana’s new head coach, with Roger De Sa expected to join him as assistant.

Queiroz, who has previously managed Egypt, Iran and Portugal, has signed a four-month contract that will be reviewed after the World Cup. He is expected to be unveiled in Accra alongside members of his technical team on Thursday.

Ghana will continue their preparations with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales ahead of the tournament.

The Black Stars, set for their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L and will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Having exited at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022, Queiroz’s immediate task will be to restore stability and guide Ghana towards a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.
