The four-time African champions are scheduled to face the Three Lions on June 26 at Gillette Stadium in what will be their second group match of the competition.

Ayew’s connection to English football adds a personal dimension to the encounter. The 34-year-old has spent over a decade in England, featuring for Aston Villa, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Leicester City since first arriving in the 2015/16 season.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, the Ghana captain reflected on his long stay in the country, describing England as a second home while acknowledging the emotional weight of facing familiar surroundings on football’s biggest stage.

“It’s going to be a special game. I’ve been there for 10 years; it’s like my third home because France is my second home,” Ayew said.

“They’ve been good to me. There have been ups and downs, I’ve experienced everything there, and I have really, really enjoyed my time there. I’m still enjoying it, and hopefully there are more years to come.”

Despite the personal ties, Ayew stressed that sentiment will be set aside once the match begins, with Ghana determined to make a strong statement at the World Cup.

“We have to prove ourselves, and we have to show that we have quality, and we have to be ready for the challenge,” he said.

“We all know it’s going to be difficult, but we are ready. Obviously, I know people don’t think that we will do well, so that is good.”

The forward also acknowledged external doubts about Ghana’s chances, suggesting the team is drawing motivation from being written off.

“I like it when people think like that. We will see when we get there,” he added.

On the domestic front, Ayew continues to deliver consistent performances despite Leicester City’s relegation to League One in the 2025/26 season, contributing nine goals and three assists.

He also finished the World Cup qualifiers as one of the standout performers, registering seven goals and seven assists — the joint-highest tally in CAF qualifying alongside Algeria’s Mohamed Amoura.

The Black Stars are already in the United States stepping up preparations for the tournament. They will face Jamaica in a warm-up fixture on June 10 before opening their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17.

2026 WC: Michael Essien confident Black Stars can make knockout stages https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-michael-essien-confident-black-stars-can-make-knockout-stages/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 08:10:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669082 Former Ghana international Michael Essien has expressed confidence that the Black Stars possess the quality to progress to the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions are set to compete at the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Ghana, who exited at the group stage in both the 2014 and 2022 editions in Brazil and Qatar respectively, are aiming for a stronger showing this time around. Essien believes the current squad is capable of turning things around.

“I think the team has the quality to make it out of the group phase. They were disappointing in the last World Cup in Qatar, and as a Ghanaian, the nation is also expecting the boys to do well,” the former Chelsea midfielder told talkSPORT.

He added that the highly anticipated clash with England will be a key fixture for fans, stressing the importance of taking each game as it comes.

Essien further noted that reaching the second round should be considered the minimum target for the team, while urging belief in their ability to go further.

“Ghana playing against England is a game everyone is looking forward to, so let’s see what they can do, but they will have to take it game by game and make sure they win.”

The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match comes against Croatia on June 27.

Meanwhile, the team has already arrived in the United States to continue preparations, with a final warm-up match scheduled against Jamaica on June 10.

2026 WC: English FA ‘weighing up’ Thomas Partey handshake before England match against Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-english-fa-weighing-up-thomas-partey-handshake-before-england-match-against-ghana/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 08:05:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669087 The FA are reportedly considering their stance over England’s pre-match handshake with Ghana’s Thomas Partey.

Ghana will take on the Three Lions in their second group stage match at the World Cup on Tuesday, June 23.

The two sides will meet at Boston Stadium, the tournament’s name for Gillette Stadium, in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

According to The Times, the FA plan to discuss how the players will deal with a potential pre-match handshake with Partey.

It is customary for the starting players from both sides to shake hands on the pitch prior to kick-off.

Partey could start against England after being named in Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the tournament.

It comes ahead of the midfielder standing trial on rape charges at Southwark Crown Court in London.

The 32-year-old was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in July 2025.

Partey was subsequently charged with two additional counts of rape in February of this year.

He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him.

His trial had been scheduled to take place in November, but may now be delayed until early 2027.

Speaking in February, Partey’s defence lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, said: “Thomas Partey continues to deny all charges against him. He has cooperated fully with the police throughout. Given that legal proceedings are ongoing, there will be no further comment.”

Partey, who now plays for Villarreal, spent five years with Arsenal before leaving the club last summer.

During that time, he was teammates with England stars Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.

The duo are likely to start for Thomas Tuchel’s side in North America this summer.

Partey was included in Carlos Queiroz’s final squad for the World Cup this week.

Under the conditions of his bail, he must notify authorities of any plans to travel abroad.

US federal law also requires Partey to declare this upon his entry into the country.

Ghana are set to be based in Rhode Island during the tournament, with their matches against Panama and Croatia in Toronto and Philadelphia, respectively.

Partey has 57 caps for his country after starting their friendly against Wales on Tuesday.

The midfielder played the first 45 minutes before being substituted as Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw in Cardiff.

2026 WC: There is pressure, but I am confident in Black Stars’ chances – Asamoah Gyan https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-there-is-pressure-but-i-am-confident-in-black-stars-chances-asamoah-gyan/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 08:00:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669067 Former Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan says there is growing optimism among Ghanaians ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while cautioning that the team will carry significant expectations when the tournament begins.

Ghana will compete at the global showpiece hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, marking their fifth appearance at the tournament. Despite previous disappointments in 2014 and 2022, when the team exited at the group stage, Gyan believes there is renewed belief in the squad’s potential.

“Ghanaians are optimistic, but there is pressure back home,” Gyan, who remains Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer and Africa’s top scorer in World Cup history, said on SuperSport.

The former Sunderland forward expressed confidence in the team’s prospects while wishing African nations well at the tournament.

“Let’s see what happens, but I hope all the African teams will do well, and I wish them well,” he added.

The Black Stars have already arrived in the United States to continue their final phase of preparations, with a friendly against Jamaica scheduled for June 10.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. Their campaign begins on June 17 against Panama at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Ghana will be aiming to finally break their group-stage barrier, having last reached the knockout rounds during their historic run to the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.

Caleb Yirenkyi’s football talent is incredible – Asamoah Gyan https://www.adomonline.com/caleb-yirenkyis-football-talent-is-incredible-asamoah-gyan/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 07:40:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669045 Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has showered praise on Caleb Yirenkyi following his standout performance in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales in an international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on June 2.

The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder marked the occasion with Ghana’s only goal and delivered a composed all-round display as the Black Stars continued their build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Gyan described the young midfielder as a natural talent, noting that his rapid development has been impossible to ignore.

“He’s a natural talent. The way he’s rising is very incredible. Yesterday, everybody saw what he did, not only the goal—his positioning, his passing, the way he follows attack, and everything,” Gyan said.

Beyond the goal, Gyan highlighted Yirenkyi’s intelligence on the ball and his influence in Ghana’s build-up play, stressing that his contribution went well beyond the scoresheet.

The former Sunderland striker also offered a playful remark, linking Yirenkyi’s shirt number to a growing trend of goal-scoring defenders in Ghana’s history.

“He’s not the only player to score a goal wearing the number 3 jersey; our very own Jonathan Mensah did it too. It looks like goals are in the number 3 jersey,” he added.

Yirenkyi and the Black Stars have since arrived in the United States to continue their final phase of preparations for the World Cup. The team is scheduled to face Jamaica in another friendly on June 10.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the global tournament and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Their campaign begins on June 17 against Panama, followed by fixtures against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in 2010.

The senior national team departed Cardiff on Wednesday, June 3, after several weeks of training aimed at sharpening the squad for the global tournament.

The delegation, comprising players, technical staff, and officials, is now based in Providence, Rhode Island, where preparations for the next phase of their build-up will continue.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz travelled with his final 26-man squad, which was confirmed on Monday, June 1, bringing clarity to the group that will carry Ghana’s ambitions into the competition.

Before leaving Wales, Ghana concluded a key phase of preparations with a friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, June 2.

Caleb Yirenkyi opened the scoring in the second half, but the Black Stars were later pegged back after defensive lapses allowed Lewis Koumas to restore parity for the home side.

With that match behind them, focus now shifts fully to tactical refinement and strengthening team cohesion ahead of the World Cup.

Ghana are expected to play another preparatory friendly against Jamaica on June 10 as part of their final tune-up schedule.

The Black Stars, who will be making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. They open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be hoping to surpass their previous best performance at the tournament—reaching the quarter-finals in 2010.

Gyan, one of Ghana’s most celebrated strikers, used the opportunity to congratulate the squad and technical team for successfully securing qualification to the continental tournament.

He urged the players to remain focused, work hard, and give their maximum effort whenever they take to the field.

The visit marked one of Gyan’s first official engagements since his appointment as Ambassador for Ghana’s national teams, a role aimed at strengthening support structures and boosting morale across the various national sides.

He also assured the players of his continued commitment to supporting and motivating the team as they build towards next year’s WAFCON finals.

His presence was warmly welcomed by both players and technical staff, with the former Black Stars skipper sharing personal experiences and words of inspiration with the squad.

The Black Queens are currently in camp in Accra under head coach Kim Lars Björkegren as preparations intensify for the continental showpiece.

Guardiola quit ‘100 times’ in the past – Khaldoon https://www.adomonline.com/guardiola-quit-100-times-in-the-past-khaldoon/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 07:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669184 Pep Guardiola threatened to quit Manchester City “100 times” during his decade-long reign as manager but chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said this time he knew the Spaniard “actually meant it”.

Guardiola, 55, stepped down at the end of this season after leading the club to 17 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League victory.

He had one more year remaining on his contract, but said in his last news conference that the club needed a “new manager” and “new energy”.

Speaking in his annual interview with in-house media, Khaldoon said he realised the exit was to become a reality, adding: “I knew it and that’s why I didn’t fight it.

“Throughout these years, I’ve always fought it and always brought him back because I knew that was always the answer.

“But in this particular one, I think he knew – and I knew that he knew – and that is why it was the right thing for him and it was the natural thing.”

Before last month’s FA Cup final victory over Chelsea, Guardiola was asked whether the visit to Wembley Stadium would be his last. He replied by saying “no way”, and that he had “one more year [on his contract]”.

But the playful way in which he delivered that line and his quick exit from the room raised a few eyebrows, adding to the mounting speculation.

Guardiola was asked after the draw at Bournemouth on 19 May whether he would still be in charge next season, and he replied by saying he had to talk to Khaldoon. His decision was confirmed three days later.

“He’s more than just the manager of the club,” said Khaldoon. “To me, he’s a friend. Over these years, we have become close friends, and I don’t know if he will admit it, but I consider myself his psychiatrist.

“Inevitably, we have had a lot of ups and some downs and in the downs, he must have quit 100 times over these 10 years.

“There is the story as you all know, The Boy that Cries Wolf. In the case of Pep, when he says I quit, it doesn’t mean he’s quitting. You don’t take it that seriously – you have to manage him.”

Guardiola joined the club in 2016 and signed contract extensions in May 2018, November 2020, November 2022 and November 2024.

Khaldoon said: “He never thought he would stay more than four years, then more than five years. So in his mind, even year four and five it was always ‘OK, how much more time? How much more time?’ And it always had to be done in the correct way.

“There was always going to be one moment where it was going to be real.”

Guardiola’s former assistant Enzo Maresca has been identified as the leading contender to take over, with Manchester City understood to be in advanced talks with the ex-Chelsea manager.

Asked about the search, Khaldoon said: “Just be patient with us. Very soon, we will announce it, and you will be comfortable that we have selected and brought in the best manager possible.”

Which clubs have the most players? How many of each squad play in the best leagues? And who are the oldest and youngest squads and players at this World Cup?

They may not have won the Premier League but Manchester City’s players are the most in-demand on the international stage, with a record 19 representing 12 different countries in the coming weeks.

The champions of Germany, England, France and Spain have the most players at the World Cup after that, with Arsenal providing 16 players for 10 different nations.

Serie A winners Inter Milan have just seven players at the tournament, largely due to Italy’s absence.

Looking just at the 20 clubs that made up the 2025-26 Premier League, only this season’s top three have more players at the World Cup than Conference League winners Crystal Palace (12).

Including players out on loan over the season, Sunderland remarkably have as many representatives on the global stage as Chelsea and Liverpool (11), showing just how globe-trotting their recruitment was following promotion last summer.

The majority of Brentford, Everton and Leeds’ squads can put their feet up and recharge their batteries for next season, with those clubs sending just four players each.

With Europe’s top five leagues – France’s Ligue 1, Italy’s Serie A, the Premier League in England, La Liga in Spain and Germany’s Bundesliga – regarded as the best in the world, only Spain’s squad is made up exclusively of players from that quintet.

Al-Ahli’s Ivan Toney and Galatasaray’s Leroy Sane have been selected by England and Germany, while France have included both Theo Hernandez and N’Golo Kante of Al-Hilal and Fenerbahce respectively.

Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium have a considerable number of players playing at a high level despite their size while outside of Europe, Argentina and Senegal have the most players playing in the top leagues.

None of Curacao, Iran, Iraq or Qatar’s squads played in Europe’s top five leagues this season, although Iraqi forward Ali Jasim is on the books of Serie A club Como but spent the season on loan at Saudi side Al-Najma.

Carlo Ancelotti is relying on veterans Danilo, Casemiro and Neymar (all aged 34) to win Brazil their first World Cup since 2002, while Scotland have also brought one of the older squads to what is their first World Cup since 1998.

A big reason for that is goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who will be 43 years and 162 days old when it all starts next week, making him by far the most senior player at the tournament.

Cristiano Ronaldo continues to defy science as he prepares to take part in his sixth World Cup at the age of 41, while Luka Modric and Edin Dzeko make up the other outfield members of the over-40s club.

Ivory Coast have the youngest squad at the World Cup, with many big clubs keeping a keen eye on their exciting forwards Yan Diomande (aged 19) and Bazoumana Toure (20).

Africa Cup of Nations champions Morocco and Euro 2024 winners Spain also have relatively young squads, with the latter unsurprising given it includes the likes of Lamine Yamal (18) and Pau Cubarsi (19).

Man City consider legal action after Haaland claim https://www.adomonline.com/man-city-consider-legal-action-after-haaland-claim/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 06:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2669150 Manchester City are contemplating taking legal action after a Real Madrid presidential candidate promised to sign their striker Erling Haaland.

Enrique Riquelme – a renewable energy magnate who is challenging current president Florentino Perez for the position – unveiled a Real Madrid shirt bearing Haaland’s name while on television on Wednesday, saying: “He has a release clause and would like to join Real Madrid. If I become president, he will play for Real Madrid.”

A swift denial was issued in a joint statement by Haaland’s father and agent before City rubbished the suggestion.

“The stories which have emerged from Spain regarding the future of Erling Haaland are untrue,” the statement read. “There is no chance of this happening and there is no contractual clause to enable it.

“We are considering legal action for the use of our player image in this context.”

Enrique also pledged to sign City midfielder Rodri, adding: “He is a great player, in a position where Madrid need to strengthen.

“We have spoken to his agent. We have to respect his club, but if I’m president, he will play for Madrid. I will do everything possible.”

Haaland’s father Alfe Inge and agent Rafaela Pimenta said in their joint statement: “All very entertaining but not true.

“We wish all the best for both candidates in the Real Madrid elections.”

What is happening in the Real Madrid election?

Riquelme has challenged Perez in the election – the first time in 20 years Perez has not stood unopposed – following two seasons in which the club has won no major trophies.

The 37-year-old has run on a campaign of vast giveaways, including a promise to build a members’ city for fans of the club in the area surrounding the training base featuring swimming pools, padel courts and a basketball arena.

He has also suggested reducing the annual membership fee by up to 50% if the team does not win the Champions League next season.

Riquelme also opposes Perez’s decision to hire Jose Mourinho as the club’s manager. That appointment can only be formally confirmed if Perez wins the election.

The team behind Riquelme’s campaign has hinted that former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is their main target for the position.

“My coach is the one Real Madrid fans wants,” he said on Wednesday, without revealing a name.

When asked about Klopp in an interview with The Athletic last month, Riquelme said: “Naturally, I would love for profiles of that calibre, and others like them, to coach this club.”

The Perez campaign has sought to dismiss Riquelme’s strategy of immediately bringing in superstar names as unrealistic.

Rodri, 29, recently said he will resolve his future after the upcoming World Cup.

“When a player is approaching the final stage of his contract, it’s normal for names to be mentioned,” he added.

“I’m very calm, I know exactly where I stand, and I’ll tell you that perhaps if there hadn’t been a World Cup, things might be different now.”

Perez, meanwhile, has pledged to reinvigorate the squad with new signings of his own and to reduce the inter-team disputes which marred the second half of the season after Alvaro Arbeloa replaced the sacked Xabi Alonso as manager.

If he is confirmed as the election winner, the club will confirm the signings of former Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate and Inter full-back Denzel Dumfries, in deals which have already been agreed.

“I always say that in football you don’t always win,” Perez said on Wednesday.

“We haven’t achieved the expected results, but we’ve identified the problems. The team couldn’t have a pre-season due to the Club World Cup, and that hampered us all year.

“We had almost 30 injuries in the first half of the season and that was a decisive factor.

“We’re already working to face the challenges of the new season.”

The campaign has been characterised by repeated attempts from both sides to ridicule the opposition.

The team backing 79-year-old Perez purchased advertising space during Riquelme’s appearance on El Hormiguero – a long-running chat show featuring puppets and novelty variety acts – in which they announced Mourinho as the team’s new manager and called on members to back their candidate.

Why do Real Madrid have elections and how do they work?

Real Madrid has been owned by its members throughout its history. The process of electing a president is seen as the most democratic way for its members to have a say in how the club is governed and how its strategy for the future should work.

Just under 100,000 members are eligible to vote in the election, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 7 June.

Each member pays an annual fee of around £130, generating around £10m in income for the club.

The vote was called early by Perez himself, in an attempt secure a renewed mandate following a period of on-field unrest and disapproval in the stands at the Santiago Bernabeu. He is considered the overwhelming favourite to win.

Club legends have come out to support both candidates. Though the majority – including Karim Benzema, Casemiro, and Roberto Carlos – are backing Perez, former captains Iker Casillas and Fernando Hierro have pledged their support for Riquelme.

Perez first became president in 2000, having himself promised to usher in a new era of success by building a team of ‘Galacticos’ comprising new superstar signings.

His pledge to sign Barcelona’s Luis Figo played a crucial role in his victory over incumbent Lorenzo Sanz, who had twice overseen Champions League wins during his tenure, and was followed up by the signings of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, David Beckham, and Michael Owen in each of the following summers.

Perez resigned in 2006, amid diminishing results for the team, but returned in 2009 when he stood unopposed for the presidency.

Seven African players to watch at World Cup 2026 https://www.adomonline.com/seven-african-players-to-watch-at-world-cup-2026/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 05:56:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668964 A record 10 African countries will take part in the 2026 Fifa World Cup after the finals were expanded to 48 teams, with a host of star names hoping to go all the way and lift the trophy.

Morocco made history in Qatar four years ago by becoming the first African side to reach the semi-finals.

Cape Verde will make their tournament debut, while DR Congo return for the first time since 1974.

BBC Sport Africa picks out seven players to keep an eye on in the United States, Mexico and Canada from 11 June to 19 July.

Antoine Semenyo (Ghana)

The London-born forward may have missed out on the Premier League title with Manchester City, but it was his stunning piece of skill which provided the winner in the FA Cup final against Chelsea last month.

The 26-year-old is heading into the tournament off the back of his best ever league season in front of goal, with seven of his 17 efforts in the English top flight coming since his move to the Etihad Stadium in January.

Semenyo could find himself carrying his nation’s hopes, given that Ghana’s other Premier League star, Tottenham’s Mohammed Kudus, is out injured.

The former Bournemouth man was part of Ghana’s squad in 2022 but was used sparingly from the bench as the Black Stars suffered a group-stage exit.

The West Africans missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) entirely, and Semenyo will be looking to score his first goal in a major tournament as Ghana face England, Croatia and Panama in Group L.

The Elephants, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2014, boast the best young player in the German Bundesliga.

The 19-year-old scooped the Rookie of the Season award after his 12 goals and eight assists helped RB Leipzig finish third and return to the Champions League.

As a result, he has been linked with big money moves to the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea.

Diomande, who started four of his country’s five games at Afcon 2025, attempted more dribbles and won more duels than anyone else in the Bundesliga in 2025-26, with his skill in one-on-one situations making him a dangerous attacking threat.

Group E opponents Germany will therefore know all about his abilities, and the Ivorians will also face Ecuador and debutants Curacao.

Ronwen Williams (South Africa)

South Africa are back at the finals for the first time since hosting in 2010, with their first target to progress past the group stage.

That is something Bafana Bafana have never managed, experiencing early exits in 1998 and 2002 before also becoming the first host nation to fail to clear the opening hurdle.

A strong core of players from dominant club side Mamelodi Sundowns is led by goalkeeper and captain Williams, who became known for his penalty-saving heroics after stopping four spot kicks in a shootout against Cape Verde in the Afcon 2023 quarter-finals.

The 34-year-old, who says he “cherishes” his role as skipper, now has a wealth of big-game experience, having just clinched the African Champions League title with Sundowns.

South Africa take on co-hosts Mexico in the tournament’s opening game on 11 June before facing Czech Republic and South Korea.

Image caption: Roberto Lopes was central to Cape Verde’s qualification for the finals, which was sealed with a win over Eswatini in a packed stadium in Praia

The centre-back has been a key component in a remarkable few years for tiny Cape Verde, who reached the last eight at Afcon 2023 before finishing above continental heavyweights Cameroon in qualifying for this year’s World Cup.

Shamrock Rovers man Lopes was first approached to play for the Blues Sharks via business networking platform LinkedIn, and he initially ignored the message because it was in Portuguese.

The Dublin-born 33-year-old – whose strong Irish accent is likely to make him stand out during media duties – made his debut in 2019 and only missed one game in qualifying as the Atlantic Ocean archipelago secured a place at the finals for the first time.

Cape Verde face a daunting task in Group H, where they will come up against former winners Spain and Uruguay as well as Saudi Arabia, and Lopes’ experience and leadership at the back could prove a big factor.

Brahim Diaz (Morocco)

The Real Madrid playmaker was the star for Morocco at Afcon 2025, scoring five goals as the hosts reached the final, but now has some making up to do.

With the game goalless deep in second-half stoppage time, the 26-year-old endured a moment to forget when his attempted Panenka penalty was easily saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

A walk-off by the West Africans in protest against the decision to award that spot kick had forced Diaz into a long wait before his miss, but he was then replaced early in extra time and was seen in tears as Senegal went on to win 1-0.

A Confederation of African Football appeals board did subsequently award Morocco the title – with Senegal immediately taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport – but Diaz, a former Spain Under-21 international who made his Morocco debut in 2024, well after the team’s run to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar, should relish the chance for atonement.

The Atlas Lions face record five-time winners Brazil in their Group C opener before games against Scotland and Haiti.

Ismaila Sarr (Senegal)

Image caption: Ismaila Sarr scored for Senegal in a friendly match against Peru in March

The 28-year-old is another man in fine form in front of goal with a career-high 21 strikes for Crystal Palace this season.

Nine of those came in the Uefa Conference League, helping the Eagles to claim their first ever European trophy.

Sarr is gearing up for his third successive World Cup after Senegal were eliminated at the group stage on fair play record in 2018 before being swept aside 3-0 by England in the last 16 four years later.

The Teranga Lions, who can at least call themselves the reigning African champions on the pitch, face two-time champions France, Erling Haaland’s Norway and Iraq in Group I.

Senegal famously beat holders France 1-0 on their way to the quarter-finals on their debut in 2002, and Sarr will hope to translate his club form onto the international stage as they bid for a similar upset.

Omar Marmoush (Egypt)

Image caption: Omar Marmoush had a penalty saved in a shootout against Nigeria as Egypt finished fourth at Afcon 2025

The 27-year-old may not have entirely lived up to his $79.5m (£59m) price tag since joining Manchester City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January last year, but Marmoush helped Pep Guardiola’s side pick up the League Cup and FA Cup this season.

The forward only started eight of City’s Premier League games in 2025-26 but he is among the first names on Egypt’s teamsheet.

Marmoush netted twice at Afcon 2025 as the North Africans finished fourth, and he will be aiming to build on those performances at his first World Cup.

While the Pharaohs were the first African nation to take part, the record seven-time continental champions are still waiting to win a game at the World Cup – with a last-16 (first round) defeat in 1934 followed by group-stage exits in 1990 and 2018.

With captain Mohamed Salah only recently back from injury after an underwhelming season with Liverpool, coach Hossam Hassan will expect Marmoush to deliver.

Man City have opening Anderson bid rejected by Forest https://www.adomonline.com/man-city-have-opening-anderson-bid-rejected-by-forest/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 05:50:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668959 Manchester City have had an opening bid for midfielder Elliot Anderson rejected by Nottingham Forest.

BBC Sport reported last week the 23-year-old England international is leaning towards a move to Etihad Stadium over Manchester United.

There is a growing expectation Anderson will leave the City Ground this summer and City have now formalised interest with their first bid rebuffed, as reported by The Athletic.

Anderson enjoyed a stellar season with Forest and has been selected in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

A potential fee for Anderson could be a record for a British player and eclipse the £105m Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023.

City have long been admirers of Newcastle academy graduate Anderson. The player is currently preparing for the tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico, but club-to-club talks can continue to take place.

Captain Bernardo Silva’s exit means City are looking to bolster their midfield and Anderson tops the list of potential targets.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is another player understood to be highly rated by City, with reports suggesting the Italy international has been monitored as a long-term target.

Nico Gonzalez, who missed out on a place in the Spain squad for the World Cup and also fell out of favour under Pep Guardiola last season, may depart if the right offer comes in.

Sources indicate City are also looking to sign a right-back to supplement Matheus Nunes, 28, who excelled in the position this season after being converted from midfield.

City are eyeing the profile of a young full-back and one who is a natural in that position that can grow into the role in the future.

Konate reveals depression after deaths of Jota & father https://www.adomonline.com/konate-reveals-depression-after-deaths-of-jota-father/ Thu, 04 Jun 2026 05:42:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668954 Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has opened up on how the deaths of team-mate Diogo Jota and his father left him battling depression during his final season at the club.

Portugal forward Jota and his brother Andre Silva, tragically died in a car crash last July, while Konate’s dad Hamady passed away in January after a long illness.

The France international’s form was visibly affected in his final campaign at Anfield and the 27-year-old has now outlined the personal turmoil he was going through.

“There are low points, there’s depression. You can suffer from depression in football too; there’s no need to be ashamed to say so,” he told France Inter radio.

“It’s true that I’ve often heard players say they were suffering from depression and that fans or people on the outside didn’t understand because they were earning a lot of money. But no, that’s rubbish and you shouldn’t say that.

“Depression is personal; it’s deep inside you. When you’re depressed, it starts in the heart, goes up to the brain and takes over your whole body. For me, that’s what’s hard, and we need to talk about it.”

Konate, who is closing in on a move to Real Madrid after confirming he will leave Anfield this summer, said the tragic death of Jota, who was one of his neighbours during his time on Merseyside, had a shattering impact.

“It devastated me. I didn’t have any interest in anything else at that point,” he added.

“You go back to football because you have no choice. We’re employees at a club that pays us every month, so we have duties.

“We had no choice but to go back on the field and play for him and his family – as well as ourselves. There’s no way of getting over it, but you learn to live with it.”

Image caption: The Diogo Jota’s funeral was attended by huge names from across football, including former team-mates like Konate

During this difficult period Konate was also carrying the burden of knowing his father was seriously ill.

“I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know whether I should go home and stop playing, because the team needed me too,” he added.

“I didn’t know who to talk to about it, so I kept it all to myself. And this is the advice I’d give to everyone: when you’re feeling down or something’s going on, you need to talk to those around you.

“It can help you and do you good. I didn’t talk about it and kept it to myself.

“The doctors then told us he didn’t have long to live, but we didn’t know it would happen so quickly.”

Konate returned early from compassionate leave to help Liverpool avert an injury crisis at the end of January but the centre-back conceded that things were never quite right.

He made 51 appearances across the 2025-26 campaign, 49 as a starter, but was unable to consistently produce the best form he had displayed across his previous four seasons on Merseyside as Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League.

Konate, who has been capped 27 times by France, is part of Didier Deschamps’ 26-man squad for the World Cup, with Les Bleus among the favourites.

“There was never a moment when I felt like I was on the mend,” he added.

“All of these tragic events happened so quickly and as soon as I felt like I was getting my head above water, something else happened.

“I had the support of all these fans, who are exceptional at Liverpool, my team-mates and especially my family but I also had to learn how to get back on my feet on my own because the team needed me more than ever and I know that my father would have wanted me to get back.”

The squad has spent close to two weeks in camp in the United Kingdom, where they focused on tactical drills and fitness conditioning ahead of the global tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz named his final 26-man squad on Monday, June 1, confirming the players set to represent Ghana at the World Cup.

The team rounded off their UK preparations on Tuesday, June 2, with a friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Caleb Yirenkyi gave Ghana the lead in the second half, but late defensive lapses allowed Wales forward Lewis Koumas to salvage a draw for the hosts.

Following the match, the Black Stars have now travelled to their next training base in Providence, Rhode Island, where final tactical preparations will continue ahead of the tournament.

Ghana are expected to play a final warm-up fixture against Jamaica on June 10 before heading into competitive action.

The four-time African champions will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

They open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Ghana will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup.

Augustine Arhinful urges Thomas Partey to improve ahead of 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/augustine-arhinful-urges-thomas-partey-to-improve-ahead-of-2026-world-cup/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 15:06:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668773 Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful has urged Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey to improve his performances ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following his display in Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales.

The experienced midfielder struggled to make a significant impact in Tuesday’s international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium, as Ghana continued preparations for the global tournament.

Partey endured a difficult first half and was booked in the 30th minute before being substituted at halftime. He was replaced by Kwasi Sibo for the second half.

The 32-year-old was fortunate not to be sent off after a series of challenges that could have resulted in a second yellow card.

Reacting to his performance, Arhinful expressed concern about Partey’s physical condition, suggesting he must regain full fitness before the tournament begins.

“We need to bring Thomas Partey up to speed. He was lucky not to have been sent off against Wales. I can see that he’s put on some weight,” Arhinful told Sporty FM.

He stressed the importance of Partey being at his best, given his expected influence in Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

The Black Stars will wrap up their preparations with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before travelling to North America for the tournament.

Ghana will open their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage and reach the knockout rounds for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Benjamin Asare’s performance questioned after Ghana’s 1-1 draw against Wales https://www.adomonline.com/benjamin-asares-performance-questioned-after-ghanas-1-1-draw-against-wales/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 14:41:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668731 Former Ghana international Augustine Arhinful has raised concerns about the performance of Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare following Ghana’s 1-1 draw with Wales in an international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday.

The match formed part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with head coach Carlos Queiroz using the game to assess his squad ahead of the tournament in North America.

Lawrence Ati-Zigi started the encounter and delivered a composed performance in a goalless first half, after which Benjamin Asare was introduced following several second-half changes.

Ghana took the lead through Caleb Yirenkyi, but failed to hold on as Wales equalised late in the game through Lewis Koumas after a defensive lapse.

Speaking after the match, Arhinful singled out Asare’s performance for criticism, urging the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper to improve key aspects of his game, particularly his communication and command of the penalty area.

He further noted that Asare has shown vulnerability when dealing with crosses and aerial balls, adding that those weaknesses need urgent improvement as Ghana builds toward the 2026 World Cup.

Augustine Ahinful

“Benjamin Asare has to be spoken to. His communication and how he comes out need to improve,” Arhinful told Sporty FM.

“He’s always found wanting when there’s a cross into our box. The question is, could he have done something about the goal Wales scored, considering his positioning?” he added.

Arhinful’s comments are expected to reignite discussions over Ghana’s goalkeeping options ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with competition for places likely to intensify in the final days before the team departs for the tournament.

The Black Stars are scheduled to wrap up their preparations with another friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before travelling to North America for the global showpiece.

Ghana will open their Group L campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be aiming to make a strong impact at the tournament and advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

2026 WC: I have high hopes for Black Stars, says Michael Essien https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-i-have-high-hopes-for-black-stars-says-michael-essien/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 12:38:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668679 Former Ghana international Michael Essien has expressed strong confidence in the Black Stars’ chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he holds high expectations for the team as they prepare for the global showpiece.

Ghana, four-time African champions, will be making their fifth appearance at the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.

Despite back-to-back group-stage exits at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar, Essien believes the current squad has what it takes to restore national pride.

“If they can make it out of the group stage and then go to the next stage, and if something happens, I am sure the nation will be happy, but I have high hopes for the team to perform,” the former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder told talkSPORTS.

Ghana continued their preparations with a 1-1 draw against Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, a match that formed part of their build-up to the tournament.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz and his technical team will step up preparations with another friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before the squad departs for the World Cup.

At the tournament proper, Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

The Black Stars are aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

We will improve with time – Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-improve-with-time-black-stars-defender-jerome-opoku/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 12:25:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668662 Black Stars defender Jerome Opoku has called for patience and perspective after Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in their latest 2026 FIFA World Cup preparation match at Cardiff City Stadium.

Ghana took a second-half lead through Caleb Yirenkyi after a goalless opening period, but a late lapse in concentration allowed Lewis Koumas to restore parity in the dying moments of the contest.

Despite the disappointment of conceding late, Opoku insisted the performance showed clear signs of progress under head coach Carlos Queiroz, especially given the limited time the squad has had together.

“I thought it was a performance for us to be proud of,” Opoku said. “As the head coach said, we felt we should have won the game. It’s just the little details now, and something to build on given the short time we’ve worked together.”

He highlighted the disruption caused by delayed arrivals within the squad, noting that several players only joined the camp shortly before the match due to visa complications.

“The keyword is time, as the coach said,” he added. “Considering the amount of time we’ve had together, with new additions coming in, I was pleased we could put that performance out there. It shows that with more time, we can only get better as a team.”

Queiroz also confirmed after the match that some players arrived from London on the eve of the fixture after sorting out documentation issues, leaving the team with just one full training session before facing Wales.

Ghana will continue their preparations with another friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before heading to the 2026 World Cup.

At the tournament, the Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. They open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

According to Graphic Online, the Ashanti monarch, who was in Poland last week, will continue his trip to Canada, where he is also scheduled to serve as Special Guest of Honour at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Business Summit, running from June 15 to 21.

The summit is being organised by the Canada-Ghana Chamber of Commerce and its partners.

His presence in Toronto is expected to provide significant morale and symbolic support for Ghana’s squad as they begin their tournament campaign.

After their opener in Toronto, Ghana will travel to Boston for their second Group L fixture against England before heading to Philadelphia for their final group-stage match.

The Black Stars will conclude their pre-tournament preparations with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10, just days before the World Cup kicks off.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. They open against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and wrap up their group stage on June 27 against Croatia.

Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw against Wales on Tuesday night at the Cardiff City Stadium in a friendly that forms part of their final phase of preparation for the global showpiece.

Speaking after the match, Queiroz highlighted the players’ responsiveness to his instructions as a key positive, despite the result not going their way.

“What really pleased me a lot is the way the players listened to my instruction; my game plan; they were very respectful,” Queiroz said.

The Portuguese coach remains confident that continued work on his tactical approach will yield improvements as the squad builds cohesion ahead of the tournament.

Ghana will conclude their pre-World Cup preparations with a final friendly against Jamaica on June 10, a fixture expected to serve as the last major test before the tournament kicks off.

At the World Cup, the Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. They begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, before facing England six days later and wrapping up their group fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be aiming to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in 2010, having suffered early exits in recent editions of the tournament.

Late Welsh equaliser denies Carlos Queiroz winning start as Ghana draw 1-1 in Cardiff https://www.adomonline.com/late-welsh-equaliser-denies-carlos-queiroz-winning-start-as-ghana-draw-1-1-in-cardiff/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:42:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668431 Carlos Queiroz’s first match in charge of Ghana’s Black Stars ended in frustration as Wales scored a late equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw in an international friendly at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

The encounter formed part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz handed opportunities to several young players and deployed a 3-4-3 formation. Lawrence Ati-Zigi started in goal, shielded by a back three of Jerome Opoku, Marvin Senaya and Jonas Adjetey. Thomas Partey and Elisha Owusu anchored the midfield, while Gideon Mensah and Abdul Fatawu Issahaku operated as wing-backs. Jordan Ayew, Prince Kwabena Adu and Kamaldeen Sulemana led the attack.

Wales made a bright start and nearly opened the scoring early on, but Ati-Zigi produced an important save to keep the hosts at bay. Craig Bellamy’s side dominated possession and continued to apply pressure, although Ghana remained organised defensively.

The Black Stars gradually grew into the contest and came close to taking the lead before the break. Jordan Ayew tested the Welsh goalkeeper, but his effort lacked the power needed to find the back of the net as the first half ended goalless.

Queiroz made several changes after the restart, with Benjamin Asare replacing Ati-Zigi in goal and Kwasi Sibo coming on for Partey. Ernest Nuamah and Brandon Thomas-Asante were also introduced in place of Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Prince Kwabena Adu respectively.

Despite continued pressure from the hosts, Ghana’s defence held firm, with Opoku producing a number of crucial interventions to preserve the deadlock.

Further substitutions followed on the hour mark as Caleb Yirenkyi and Christopher Bonsu replaced Elisha Owusu and Kamaldeen Sulemana.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the closing stages. Jonas Adjetey first went close with a header that drifted wide before Ghana struck moments later. After winning possession in midfield, Nuamah unleashed a powerful effort that crashed against the post, with Yirenkyi reacting quickest to slot home the rebound and score his maiden goal for the Black Stars.

Ghana looked on course for victory and twice threatened to extend their advantage, but a lack of composure in the final third prevented them from putting the game beyond Wales.

Queiroz continued to rotate his squad, introducing Inaki Williams, Alidu Seidu and Abdul Mumin in the 75th minute, while Baba Rahman replaced Gideon Mensah late in the game.

However, Ghana’s hopes of a winning start under their new coach were dashed deep into stoppage time. Sustained pressure from Wales forced defensive errors, and Lewis Koumas capitalised in the 93rd minute to level the scores and earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

While the result denied Queiroz a dream debut, the performance of several young players offered encouragement ahead of the World Cup.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to their final preparatory match against Jamaica on June 10.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Ghana will open their tournament against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, face England on June 23 and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 World Cup after suffering early exits in recent major tournaments.

2026 WC: Knockout qualification is our priority – Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-knockout-qualification-is-our-priority-ghana-coach-carlos-queiroz/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:41:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668479 Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has set his sights firmly on a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that progression beyond the group stage must be the team’s minimum target.

His comments came after Ghana were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in a friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

The game remained goalless at halftime before Ghana broke through in the 66th minute through youngster Caleb Yirenkyi. However, victory slipped away late on when Lewis Koumas struck two minutes from time to rescue a draw for the hosts.

Reflecting on Ghana’s recent struggles at major tournaments—including group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022—Queiroz was unequivocal about the standard expected going forward.

“We have to guarantee to qualify for the second round [2026 World Cup]. That is the main goal of our team and our main priority, and we have to focus on that goal.

“And when you qualify for the second round, the show starts. Because everything is for the winner, nothing is for the loser. The real World Cup starts from the knockout stages, and we want to be there,” Queiroz added.

Ghana will wrap up their preparations for the tournament with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before heading to North America for the finals.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Their campaign begins against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, followed by a clash with England six days later and a final group match against Croatia on June 27.

Ghana, who last reached the World Cup knockout stage in 2010, will be aiming to end a 16-year wait for another deep run on football’s biggest stage.

Caleb Yirenkyi can become one of Ghana’s best players – Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/caleb-yirenkyi-can-become-one-of-ghanas-best-players-carlos-queiroz/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:40:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668475 Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has tipped Caleb Yirenkyi for a bright future with the national team after the midfielder delivered another impressive performance in Ghana’s 1-1 draw against Wales on Tuesday night.

The FC Nordsjaelland youngster marked his growing influence in the team by scoring Ghana’s opener at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Yirenkyi reacted quickest after Ernest Nuamah’s effort came off the post in the second half, ensuring the Black Stars avoided defeat in Queiroz’s first game in charge.

Speaking after the match, the Portuguese tactician reserved special praise for the midfielder, describing him as a player with the potential to become one of Ghana’s finest talents in the middle of the park.

“I think he is a fine player with a great future. He is still young; he has a lot of things to learn,” Queiroz said after the game.

“I think with more games, with more experience, he can become one of the best players of the Ghana National Team in the midfield. I think it’s the midfield is his position,” he added.

Yirenkyi has enjoyed a rapid rise in recent months. Following a strong showing during his debut involvement with the Black Stars at the 2025 Unity Cup, the 20-year-old earned a place in Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His consistent performances in the Danish Superliga with FC Nordsjaelland, coupled with his impact off the bench against Wales, have further strengthened his case as one of the country’s most promising young players.

The Black Stars will continue their preparations for the World Cup with a friendly encounter against Jamaica on June 10 before heading to North America for the tournament.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The four-time African champions will begin their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before taking on England on June 23. They will conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

After disappointing exits in recent major tournaments, Ghana will be aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Wales fans boo Thomas Partey who faces multiple rape charges https://www.adomonline.com/wales-fans-boo-thomas-partey-who-faces-multiple-rape-charges/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:39:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668469 Thomas Partey, the Ghana midfielder, was booed by Wales supporters during his nation’s international friendly at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday night.

Partey, the former Arsenal midfielder, was widely jeered when he took his first touches of the ball during Ghana’s World Cup warm-up game.

The 32-year-old is set to stand trial in the UK on rape and sexual assault charges. He was charged last year with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault, then charged with two new counts of rape in February this year. He has pleaded not guilty.

The game against Wales came hours after Ghana selected Partey in their squad for the World Cup.

Carlos Queiroz, the former Real Madrid manager and Manchester United assistant, has defended the decision to include Partey.

“It’s a simple and basic answer,” Queiroz said. “As far as I know, in England, in Portugal, whatever, we are living in this world, until the court makes a decision, that the presumption of innocence is on the side of all court cases.

“But today and this is not only about Thomas, very unfortunately the way the social media and the media sometimes act with full and total impunity, we are condemned even before we have the opportunity to defend.”

Asked whether he had any concerns about the selection, Queiroz said: “If the player is here with me, my answer is clear. I don’t have any comments about my own decisions. He is here so what are we talking about?

“This is not for me or you to make a judgment about. Let the events run their normal course. Let the river flow and one day when the river meets the ocean we are going to find the truth.”

Partey, who made 32 appearances for Villarreal in the 2025-26 season after leaving Arsenal last year, is in line to play against England at the World Cup. Ghana face England in the group stages on June 23. The Football Association is considering how players should deal with the customary handshake.

When Partey played against Tottenham Hotspur last September, it emerged that the conditions of his bail allowed him to play football, but that he must notify police of any international travel 24 hours in advance and must not contact the complainants.

For travel to the US, arrests and convictions anywhere in the world have to be declared when applying for a visa. Ghana will be based at Bryant University, near Boston.

Mayor cancels DR Congo friendly over Ebola concern https://www.adomonline.com/mayor-cancels-dr-congo-friendly-over-ebola-concern/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:38:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668554 Democratic Republic of Congo’s international friendly against Chile in Spain next week has been cancelled after authorities raised health concerns over the Ebola outbreak in the African nation.

Juan Franco, mayor of the city of La Linea de la Concepcion, has signed a decree which prevents the fixture from going ahead on 9 June as planned.

The decision was described as a “precautionary measure” and comes after recommendations from the Andalusian regional health service and the municipality’s own medical department.

“A report by the head of the mayoralty’s health service of La Linea advised categorically against hosting the match given the health risks which might arise,” Franco said.

La Linea, a coastal resort in the of around 65,000 people in the province of Cadiz close to the Gibraltar border, had been due to host the match as both nations continued their preparations for the World Cup.

DR Congo are currently based in Belgium after they cancelled a planned pre-tournament training camp in the capital, Kinshasa, because of an Ebola outbreak in the east of the country.

BBC Sport understands that none of DR Congo’s players – who all play for clubs outside of the country – have visited their homeland recently, but some support staff and fans have travelled from there.

DR Congo are scheduled to face Denmark in a friendly in Liege on Wednesday.

The US’s public health agency has banned entry from non-Americans who have been in the DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the previous 21 days, in response to the Ebola outbreak.

The outbreak in eastern DR Congo has been caused by a rare species of Ebola known as Bundibugyo.

There is currently no vaccine for this species and the World Health Organisation has said it could take up to nine months for a jab to be ready.

DR Congo, who have qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1974, plan to base themselves in Houston during the tournament and are scheduled to open their Group K campaign there against Portugal on 17 June.

They will then travel to the Mexican city of Guadalajara to face Colombia before returning to the United States to take on Uzbekistan in Atlanta.

2026 WC: Check out Black Stars jersey numbers as Brandon Thomas-Asante handed No. 10 shirt https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-check-out-black-stars-jersey-numbers-as-brandon-thomas-asante-handed-no-10-shirt/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:38:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668389 Ghana have officially confirmed the squad numbers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the announcement of the Black Stars’ final 26-man squad by head coach Carlos Queiroz.

The Portuguese tactician unveiled his squad on Monday, June 1, ahead of the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The final selection has been heavily influenced by injuries to several key players. Mohammed Kudus has been ruled out of the tournament, while first-choice defender Alexander Djiku will also miss out. Centre-back Mohammed Salisu is another major absentee after suffering an ACL injury during the club campaign.

With several experienced names unavailable, Queiroz has turned to a new generation of players, with 15 members of the squad set to make their World Cup debut.

Captain Jordan Ayew remains the most experienced player in the team and is preparing for his third FIFA World Cup appearance. Thomas Partey, Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Gideon Mensah are among the players set for their second appearance at the global showpiece.

Jordan Ayew has retained the number nine shirt and is expected to play a key leadership role for the Black Stars both on and off the pitch.

Several senior players have also kept their familiar squad numbers. Thomas Partey will wear number five, Inaki Williams takes number 19, Antoine Semenyo has been handed number 11, while Baba Rahman returns with the number 17 jersey following his return to the national team setup.

First-choice goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi has been assigned the number one shirt, with Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare taking number 16.

However, the biggest talking point from the squad list is the allocation of Ghana’s iconic number 10 jersey.

With Andre Ayew omitted from the squad and Mohammed Kudus sidelined through injury, the famous shirt has been handed to Coventry City forward Brandon Thomas-Asante.

The striker is preparing for his first FIFA World Cup and will carry one of the most iconic jersey numbers in Ghana football history as the Black Stars aim to make an impact in North America.

Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad numbers:

  1. Lawrence Ati-Zigi
  2. Alidu Seidu
  3. Caleb Yirenkyi
  4. Jonas Adjetey
  5. Thomas Partey

  22. Kamaldeen Sulemana
  23. Derrick Luckassen
  24. Ernest Nuamah
  25. Prince Kwabena Adu
  26. Marvin Senaya

Preparations for the tournament are already underway, with Ghana scheduled to face Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium before taking on Jamaica in a final warm-up game on June 10.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England in a highly anticipated encounter six days later. Their final group-stage match will be against Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be hoping to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup after suffering early exits in recent tournaments.

Konate in advanced talks with Real Madrid https://www.adomonline.com/konate-in-advanced-talks-with-real-madrid/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:33:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668551 France defender Ibrahima Konate is in advanced talks with Real Madrid about joining the La Liga club on a free transfer.

As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Konate is close to agreeing terms over a move to the Bernabeu when his contract at Liverpool expires at the end of June.

Liverpool announced on Sunday that Konate would leave the club at the end of his current deal.

The 27-year-old had previously been in discussions to extend his stay on Merseyside but those talks came to an end amid a gap between the centre-half and the club over his value and wages.

Konate made 183 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions and won the Premier League, FA Cup, and two League Cups.

He originally joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2021 for £35m.

Konate is set to become the second player to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid for nothing in successive summers following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real last year.

Man Utd agree £35m fee for Atalanta’s Ederson https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-agree-35m-fee-for-atalantas-ederson/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:31:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668547 Manchester United have agreed a £35m (40.5m euros) deal with Italian side Atalanta for Brazil midfielder Ederson.

The 26-year-old will sign a four-year deal at United, with the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

Ederson is still to have a medical, with sources saying the transfer should be completed in early July before United’s return to pre-season training begins.

He will become the club’s first signing since Michael Carrick was appointed permanent head coach last month.

The deal will also be subject to £3.9m (€4.5m) in additional payments.

It is the first of what could be up to three central midfield additions to Carrick’s squad this summer.

United are prioritising that area of the field, which has been weakened by the exit of Ederson’s compatriot Casemiro, 34, whose contract expires at the end of the month.

Ederson, who has three internaional caps, was named in Brazil’s 55-man expanded World Cup squad but missed out on manager Carlo Ancelotti’s final selection.

United are also keen on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, although the relegated London outfit are looking for a substantial profit on the Portugal midfielder who cost them in excess of £40m when he joined from Southampton last summer.

United also covet England’s Elliot Anderson, although the Nottingham Forest player would prefer to join Manchester City.

In addition to strengthening their midfield, United are also looking to bring in a left-sided player, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall among the players on their radar, and striking support for Benjamin Sesko.

They are also still to decide on the precise make-up of their goalkeeping team, which could include Radek Vitek, who enjoyed a superb campaign on loan at Bristol City, where he won all their player of the year prizes.

The 22-year-old Czech told BBC Sport in April he is open minded about the future but wants to play regularly, suggesting he will not return to Old Trafford as back-up to Senne Lammens.

It is understood former first-choice Andre Onana has been told he can find another club, although it is not clear how easily the Cameroon international’s wage demands will be met given he will benefit in an increase from United qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Ederson, 26, has proved adaptable across a number of central midfield roles for Atalanta, scoring 16 goals in 180 games for the Serie A outfit in all competitions.

Driven by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, United have revamped their data analysis operation under Michael Sansoni and the former high-ranking Mercedes Formula 1 performance engineer has had significant involvement in identifying the right targets, working alongside director of football Jason Wilcox.

Carrick confirmed he had been involved in recruitment meetings from the point he was named as Ruben Amorim’s temporary successor in January.

Liverpool agree deal with Iraola to succeed Slot https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-agree-deal-with-iraola-to-succeed-slot/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 08:29:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668483 Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with Andoni Iraola to take over as head coach following the sacking of Arne Slot.

Iraola left Bournemouth at the end of the season and is the clear favourite for the role at Anfield.

According to a report in The Athletic, Iraola is set to sign a two-year deal.

Iraola has favoured short-term deals throughout his coaching career at Cypriot side AEK Larnaca, Spanish teams Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano, and Bournemouth.

A formal announcement confirming Iraola’s appointment is expected this week.

The 43-year-old Spaniard is keen to bring Tommy Elphick and Shaun Cooper, his assistants at Bournemouth, to Anfield as part of his coaching staff.

BBC Sport understands Bournemouth are yet to have any formal contact from either Elphick or Cooper regarding their futures.

Liverpool are keen to make an appointment at the earliest possible opportunity and want a manager who fits their preferred playing style, which is to deliver front-foot, aggressive football.

BBC Sport understands Elphick, a lifelong Liverpool fan, has had no contact yet from the Reds but would be interested in the opportunity.

The former Bournemouth centre-back, 38, turned down the opportunity to become the Bristol City manager last week in order to assess his other options.

The hiring process at Anfield is being led by Richard Hughes, Liverpool’s sporting director, who previously worked with Iraola at the Cherries.

The Reds sacked Slot on Saturday, just a year after the Dutchman guided them to the Premier League title.

Iran World Cup squad to reach Mexico early Sunday https://www.adomonline.com/iran-world-cup-squad-to-reach-mexico-early-sunday/ Wed, 03 Jun 2026 07:05:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668627 Iran’s World Cup squad will arrive early on Sunday in Mexico where they will be based for the duration of the global football tournament, a team statement said Wednesday.

“The Iran national football team will depart Antalya for Tijuana at 15:20 (1220 GMT) on Saturday, June 6, and is scheduled to arrive in Mexico at 1:30 am (0730 GMT) on Sunday, June 7,” it said.

The Iran players, who have been at a training camp in the southern Turkish resort of Antalya since May 18, are still waiting for their US visas.

The 2026 World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, runs from June 11 to July 19.

Iran’s Team Melli has been drawn in Group G and will play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on June 15 and 21, followed by a game against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.

The US military began bombing Iran alongside Israel on February 28, sparking war, although the hostilities were halted by an April 8 ceasefire.

On Monday evening, Iran’s football federation chief Mehdi Taj said the players were expected to get their visas for Mexico either on Tuesday or Wednesday “and then a US visa will be issued quickly”.

It was not immediately clear whether nor not they had received them.

Taj also said the team would fly to Mexico via Spain.

Tensions over the war have complicated the US visa issue, with Taj saying on May 24 that Team Melli was shifting their World Cup base from Tucson in the US state of Arizona to the northwestern Mexican border city of Tijuana.

Ahead of their departure on Saturday, Iran will play a final friendly against Mali in Antalya on Thursday, after beating Gambia 3-1 on May 29.

2026 WC: Everything will depend on ‘poster boy’ Antoine Semenyo – Asamoah Gyan https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-everything-will-depend-on-poster-boy-antoine-semenyo-asamoah-gyan/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 13:04:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668325 Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan believes Antoine Semenyo could be the difference-maker for the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Semenyo has enjoyed a remarkable season that has elevated his profile on the global stage. After impressing with AFC Bournemouth, where he scored 10 goals and provided three assists, the Ghana forward earned a move to Manchester City FC in January.

The 26-year-old continued his outstanding form following the transfer, registering 11 goals and three assists while helping the club secure two domestic trophies to cap off a memorable campaign.

His performances have further strengthened his reputation as one of Ghana’s most influential attacking players heading into the 23rd edition of the global showpiece.

Speaking at the Rolling Nations event in New York City, Gyan, Africa’s all-time leading scorer at the FIFA World Cup, described Semenyo as the poster boy of the current Black Stars squad heading into the tournament.

He highlighted the former Bristol City striker’s importance to the national team, insisting he will be a key asset as Ghana seeks to make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage after back-to-back group phase elimination in 2014 and 2022 in Brazil and Qatar, respectively.

“He’s [Antoine Semenyo] the face of Ghana football right now because of his position and what he has done for himself. Everything is going to depend on Antoine Semenyo for this World Cup,” Gyan said.

Gyan, who played at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups, further highlighted the challenges that Semenyo may face heading into the tournament, particularly following the outstanding season he has enjoyed.

“There will be a lot of pressure on Semenyo going to the World Cup. People back home have questions about his performance when it comes to the national team.”

“There will be a bit of pressure because of where he is playing now. When you’re playing for one of the best teams in the world, and you come to the national team, there will be a lot of expectations,” he added.

Semenyo, who will make his second World Cup appearance this summer, has netted thrice for the Black Stars in 34 matches.

The Black Stars are continuing preparations for the tournament with a series of international friendlies. Ghana will face Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium before concluding their build-up with another friendly against Jamaica on June 10.

Attention will then shift to the World Cup, where Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England six days later. They will conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

After suffering back-to-back group-stage exits at recent World Cups, Ghana will be determined to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

2026 WC: Black Stars players ready to give their best – Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-black-stars-players-ready-to-give-their-best-carlos-queiroz/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 11:49:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668310 Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has expressed strong confidence in his final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the players are united, motivated and ready to represent the nation with pride on football’s biggest stage.

The Portuguese tactician on Monday, June 1, named his 26-man squad for the tournament in North America, with 15 players set to make their FIFA World Cup debut.

Speaking after announcing the squad, Queiroz praised the commitment and passion of his players, revealing that individual discussions with each member of the team reinforced his belief in their dedication to the Black Stars.

“Enjoy it. Be proud of your team. We’re going to give our best. The players want to die for the shirt. I did individual interviews with all of them. I was touched by the feelings they expressed about playing for the Black Stars,” he said.

Queiroz stressed that the squad fully appreciates the responsibility that comes with representing Ghana on the global stage and is prepared for the challenges ahead.

“Believe me, they have great respect for the nation and the people. I’m sure they’ll do their best. But this is not a walk in the park. It’s not a day at the beach. We play the best teams in the world. They have the same wish, desire, motivation and ambition,” he added.

The Black Stars are currently intensifying preparations for the tournament with a series of international friendlies. Ghana will take on Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium before concluding their warm-up campaign against Jamaica on June 10.

Focus will then shift to the World Cup, where Ghana have been drawn in a challenging Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The four-time African champions will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England six days later. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Croatia on June 27.

Having exited at the group stage in their last two World Cup appearances, Ghana will be hoping to secure a place in the knockout rounds for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

2026 WC: Carlos Queiroz defends Solomon Agbasi’s standby role in Ghana’s plans https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-carlos-queiroz-defends-solomon-agbasis-standby-role-in-ghanas-plans/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 11:06:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668300 Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has defended his decision to retain goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi within Ghana’s World Cup camp despite the Hearts of Oak shot-stopper missing out on the country’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Agbasi was omitted from the official list submitted to FIFA ahead of the tournament in North America but will remain with the Black Stars as a standby option throughout the competition.

Queiroz explained that the arrangement is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s goalkeeping depth while also supporting the long-term development of the young goalkeeper.

“We have the privilege to have another player who has accepted to be with us, be part of our team, be part of our training, and be ready if something happens in our goalkeeping department. So we have another player, who is player number 27,” Queiroz said.

The Portuguese tactician noted that Agbasi’s continued involvement serves two important objectives.

According to him, the first is to expose the goalkeeper to the demands of elite international football as part of Ghana’s wider goalkeeper development strategy.

“First of all, it will be part of our development programme for goalkeepers in Ghana. So we allow him to grow up, to be ready. He’s a young goalkeeper with fantastic qualities,” he explained.

Queiroz stressed that Agbasi’s presence in camp is also a practical decision designed to safeguard the team against any unexpected goalkeeping setbacks during the tournament.

“The second reason is to sustain the training and preparation of the team and cover the eventual situation of replacement, because if we are forced to make that decision, he will be ready to compete and be part of the team. He is ready to perform.”

Ghana’s final squad features Benjamin Asare, Lawrence Ati-Zigi and Joseph Anang as the three selected goalkeepers, with Agbasi taking up the role of designated “player number 27.”

The Black Stars are currently fine-tuning preparations with a series of international friendlies ahead of the World Cup. Ghana will take on Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium before wrapping up their pre-tournament schedule against Jamaica on June 10.

Focus will then shift to the World Cup, where Ghana have been placed in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The four-time African champions will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England six days later. Their group-stage journey will conclude with a clash against Croatia on June 27.

Having endured consecutive group-stage eliminations at recent World Cups, Ghana will head to North America eager to return to the knockout rounds for the first time since their memorable quarter-final appearance at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

The 73-year-old unveiled his final 26-man squad for the global showpiece, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico, insisting that the selection followed an extensive and detailed process.

“It was a long, intensive process. Full of detail. Weeks, days, and nights of observation, analysis, conversations with club coaches, and consultations with everyone around our players. After that systematic process,” he said.

“I’m fully confident. I have full trust in the 26 players I’ve put in the squad.”

Despite missing out on the official squad, Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi will remain with the team throughout the tournament preparations as an additional member of the squad.

Queiroz revealed that Agbasi’s presence provides extra security in the goalkeeping department ahead of the World Cup.

“Actually, my squad has 27 players. We have the privilege to have another player with us, a goalkeeper who has agreed to be part of our team, part of our training, and ready if something happens in that department,” he said.

“That gives me comfort and confidence before the World Cup. This may be new to a lot of people, an additional player not in the official 26, but a squad member,” Queiroz added.

The Black Stars continue their preparations with a friendly clash against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium before concluding their warm-up schedule against Jamaica on June 10.

Attention will then shift to the World Cup, where Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England six days later. The Black Stars will conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

Following consecutive group-stage exits at recent World Cups, Queiroz and his side will be determined to reach the knockout stage for the first time since Ghana’s memorable quarter-final run in 2010.

2026 WC: Ghana secures 1,000 tickets for fans – Sports Minister confirms https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-ghana-secures-1000-tickets-for-fans-sports-minister-confirms/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 04:28:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668075 Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, says the government has pre-purchased 1,000 tickets for supporters of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the move as expensive but essential.

Speaking to Citi News, he explained that early planning was crucial to avoid the rising costs typically associated with last-minute ticket procurement for major international tournaments, particularly one hosted across North America.

He said the process had been complex, but timely action helped secure access at more sustainable prices.

“It is really nightmarish and a difficult one. This is the first time we are trying that. For us as a country, this is the first time we are playing a World Cup in that zone,” he told Citi News.

“Luckily for us, we managed and planned very well and effectively. We ordered for 1,000. I believe that that is what has saved the situation because if we were waiting till now, it would have cost us huge sums of money to even get those number of tickets,” Kofi Adams stated.

Adams added that the initiative goes beyond government arrangements, noting that the Ghana Football Association and other partner organisations have also independently acquired tickets to support travelling fans.

“I wouldn’t say only a thousand. The FA itself has secured some tickets. We have other organisations that also have secured tickets. They are all sponsoring Ghanaians to be able to get in there,” he said.

The development comes as the Black Stars step up preparations for the tournament, with friendly matches against Wales and Jamaica lined up as part of their build-up.

Ghana will face Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium before meeting Jamaica on June 10 in their final warm-up game.

At the tournament proper, Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars will begin their campaign on June 17 against Panama, before facing England on June 23 and wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

We will surprise people at 2026 World Cup – Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-surprise-people-at-2026-world-cup-black-stars-captain-jordan-ayew/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 03:58:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668071 Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has expressed strong belief in Ghana’s chances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team has the quality to “surprise people” at the tournament in North America.

The experienced forward made the remarks ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, with kick-off set for 18:45 GMT.

The match forms part of the team’s final stages of preparation for the World Cup and also marks the first test for head coach Carlos Queiroz since his appointment.

Ayew struck an optimistic tone about the squad’s mindset and ambition as Ghana sharpen their plans for the global stage.

“We just want to go there and put on a show and represent Africa and Ghana the best that we can,” the 35-year-old said.

“I’m confident that with the manager’s ideas and the boys’ commitment, I’m sure we will surprise people,” he added.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, with the Black Stars hoping to move beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals in 2010. The team has suffered back-to-back group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.

The build-up continues after the Wales fixture, with another friendly scheduled against Jamaica on June 10 as Queiroz fine-tunes his squad.

At the tournament, Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. They begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England six days later and concluding their group fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

Semenyo, who has been named in Ghana’s final 26-man squad for the tournament in North America, has enjoyed a standout season that has firmly elevated his profile on the global stage. After joining Manchester City in January from AFC Bournemouth, the forward delivered a remarkable return of 17 league goals and earned a nomination for the Premier League Player of the Season award.

Speaking to the media on Monday ahead of Ghana’s friendly against Wales, Ayew highlighted Semenyo’s consistency and mentality, describing him as a key asset both for club and country.

“He’s darn brilliant. We all know this is in his heart since he’s been at Bournemouth. He took it to City, and the fans are proud of him, the boys are proud of him,” Ayew said.

He added that Semenyo’s success reflects collective effort within the squad, while expressing confidence that the forward will continue to deliver for the national team.

“So we just hope that he’ll keep on doing it and doing it for Ghana. It’s not that he’s performing alone, we’re all performing as a team. We’re good, we’re happy,” he noted.

Ghana’s friendly against Wales is scheduled for 18:45 GMT at the Cardiff City Stadium, as part of final preparations for the World Cup.

The Black Stars will conclude their build-up on June 10 with a friendly against Jamaica before shifting focus to the World Cup campaign in Group L. FIFA World Cup 2026 will see Ghana face Panama, England and Croatia in the group stage.

We want to play great football against Wales – Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/we-want-to-play-great-football-against-wales-ghana-coach-carlos-queiroz/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 03:27:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668067 Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz says his focus is on seeing his team express themselves and deliver an entertaining performance when they face Wales in a pre-World Cup friendly scheduled for today.

The 73-year-old, appointed in April following the departure of Otto Addo, is leading the Black Stars for the first time as they step up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Speaking to the media on Monday ahead of the match, the experienced tactician stressed the importance of confidence, commitment and attacking intent.

”We want to express ourselves in the game tomorrow,” he said.

“That is the best of our skills, efforts, and commitment. As I said, the message is simple. We want to play great football. We want to win. We want to bring pride and happiness to the fans.”

Ghana have been in camp in Wales since May 25 as part of their early build-up to the tournament. Twenty-four players initially reported for duty, with Spain-based duo Thomas Partey and Iñaki Williams joining the squad on Saturday, May 30.

However, Augustine Boakye and Kojo Oppong Peprah, both based in France, were yet to arrive in camp as of Monday due to club commitments in the Ligue 1 play-offs involving AS Saint-Étienne and OGC Nice.

Despite the incomplete squad, Queiroz remains confident his team will deliver a strong performance.

”That’s the only thing that should be in all players’ minds. And the message is a message of hope and confidence. Being with them for so many months, the training sessions that I did with them, we are fully committed to delivering to the nation.”

Kick-off for the match is set for 18:45 GMT.

After the Wales fixture, Ghana will continue their preparations with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before turning their attention fully to the World Cup.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. They open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

2026 WC: Jordan Ayew calls for patience for Black Stars players ahead of tourney https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-jordan-ayew-calls-for-patience-for-black-stars-players-ahead-of-tourney/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 03:17:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668065 Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has urged Ghanaians to stay patient with the national team as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The 35-year-old made the appeal ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales on Tuesday at the Cardiff City Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 18:45 GMT.

Speaking to the media, Ayew admitted recent results have fallen short of expectations but insisted there have been positive signs in some performances.

“We know we have lost four games, but if you look at the performances, some we did well and some we didn’t do well,” he said.

“I will always remember the Germany game as an encouraging one. Against Austria, for me, it was not a 5-1 game, but sometimes that’s football.”

Ghana’s recent form has triggered criticism from sections of supporters, but Ayew stressed the need to shift focus towards upcoming challenges rather than dwelling on setbacks.

“The past is the past. It is a new chapter and we just need to focus on what is ahead of us and obviously take the first step,” he added.

“I know Ghanaians, and I know the country because I am Ghanaian. I know we take things a bit too personal, but I think we all need to be patient, relax and be positive about the squad.”

The Black Stars will complete their pre-World Cup preparations with a friendly against Jamaica on June 10 before turning attention to the tournament in North America.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. They open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, face England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

The 73-year-old tactician was appointed on a short-term deal in March following the dismissal of Otto Addo and now faces the task of guiding the four-time African champions at football’s biggest tournament.

Speaking to the media ahead of Ghana’s pre-World Cup friendly against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, Queiroz said pressure is an unavoidable part of elite coaching and one he willingly embraces.

“Of course, I feel pressure. I don’t think there is any manager heading into the World Cup that does not feel pressure,” he said.

“The pressure in this job is what drives us forward, to be better every day. The day there’s no pressure, our job ends as coaches,” Queiroz added.

The upcoming tournament will mark Queiroz’s fifth appearance at the World Cup, further adding to a coaching career that has taken him to the global stage with several national teams.

Meanwhile, the Portuguese coach has unveiled his final 26-man squad for the tournament as preparations intensify.

Queiroz addressed the issue during a press conference on Monday ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, June 2.

Questions surrounding alleged external influence in Black Stars squad selection have remained a longstanding topic among Ghanaian football supporters, with recurring concerns over whether national team coaches have full control over their choices.

Responding to a question on the matter, the veteran tactician gave a blunt response.

“Look at me nicely, look at me nicely again, and you are going to have the answer to your question,” he said.

“You see my answer? You don’t see me smiling? That’s my answer to you.”

The friendly against Wales forms part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars will be making their fifth appearance at the global tournament.

Queiroz, who has previously managed Real Madrid, Portugal and Iran, has announced his final 26-man squad for the tournament, with Paul Reverson and Solomon Agebsi being the only two left out of the initial 28-man provisional squad.

Meanwhile, defender Derrick Luckassen has taken the place of Alexander Djiku, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L of the World Cup alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. They will conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

Humble, powerful, ready – Semenyo returns to where World Cup rise began https://www.adomonline.com/humble-powerful-ready-semenyo-returns-to-where-world-cup-rise-began/ Tue, 02 Jun 2026 02:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668261 It was the training ground moment that showed Antoine Semenyo was ready to take a breakthrough step in his career.

Mike Flynn was watching on as one of the biggest players in his Newport County squad had aimed a shoulder barge at the teenager signed on loan from Bristol City without a senior start in professional football to his name.

“He just held him off the ball without a problem,” recalls the former Newport boss. “You knew he was a special kid. He was raw but we’d already seen he had talent and how good he was off both feet.

“But in that moment, you knew he was ready. We started him the next game.”

Eight years on, Semenyo has been on the exact same training pitch on the outskirts of the south Wales city as Ghana based themselves in Newport to prepare for the World Cup.

No longer the rejected striker trying to find his way in the game, Semenyo has returned a £62.5m attacking talent tipped to shine for the Black Stars when they face Panama, England and Croatia in Group L this month.

Now he is the FA Cup final matchwinner for Manchester City and the great hope for Ghana to emulate their quarter-final finish in 2010, an instantly recognisable figure.

“Back then of course he was just a lad that’s turned up on loan from Bristol City and who’d been playing non-league not too long before,” says Wales midfielder Josh Sheehan, a Rodney Parade team-mate when Semenyo joined in 2018.

“You don’t tend to judge too much, you just think you’ll see what he’s like in training, and wonder if an 18-year-old is going to get a bit bullied in League Two.

“But, to be honest, he was just a different level. Strong, fast, ability, almost like a complete forward – you knew he was going to kick on and do something special.”

Flynn had already seen a sneak peak, taking all of five minutes to agree the loan after watching him in action having been trusted by Bristol City’s loan chief Brian Tinnion to help with his development.

“The problem we had is that we had two good, experienced strikers,” says Flynn, of Padraig Amond and Jamille Matt – both heroes of Newport’s giant-killing FA Cup run that season.

“But we just knew we had to get him in, so we used a new formation with him on the left.

“We just couldn’t leave him out.”

‘A blank canvas’

It was a positional tweak that both Bournemouth and Pep Guardiola would eventually benefit from, though not before making his mark at Newport.

“I think most fans could see he was going places, but what stood out for me was what he was like on the training ground and in the dressing room,” says Mark O’Brien, Semenyo’s captain during his time at Newport. “What stuck out as a player was how strong and powerful he was for a kid.

“But his attitude was everything. He’d give everything he had, whether it was in training or on the pitch. That’s the key and you can see he’s kept that.

“He was like this blank canvas that wanted to learn from everything.”

O’Brien admits Newport’s “strong” dressing room could have easily crumbled a teenager not ready to grow up, and wouldn’t have let him get away with any sense of entitlement, especially when talk began of Premier League interest.

“But we didn’t need to, that wasn’t him,” the former defender says.

“Perhaps it was because he didn’t realise how good he was or how good he could be.

“He was just really humble and respectful.

“And that’s why we all wanted him to do well, because you definitely thought this was the beginning of something from him.”

‘Ghanaians are proud of him’

Image caption: Semenyo scored in May’s FA Cup final win over Chelsea – one of 11 goals since joining Manchester City in January

It was. Two of Semenyo’s final games were a hint of what was to come, shining in an FA Cup win over Leicester in front of the Match of the Day cameras against a Premier League winning defence.

Martin Keown wrote at the time he had witnessed “a star in the making” and warned he would not be surprised if Premier League clubs were watching.

By the time Newport drew at Middlesbrough in the fourth round – where Semenyo’s strength teed up Sheehan to provide Matt Dolan’s late leveller – Bristol City were ready to recall the teenager for the next steps of his career.

“They’d had a £2m bid from Chelsea and wanted him back early – I was gutted,” admits Flynn, who has stayed in touch with the player who eventually went to the top flight with a £10m move to Bournemouth a few years later.

“He was obviously a special talent, but he was a special kid first and foremost. He’d have this smile that would light up a room.

“His parents and family mean everything to him, and that upbringing and attitude has helped him get to where he is now.”

And where he is set for, with the World Cup calling after this return to humble Welsh beginnings.

It will not be Semenyo’s first. He made his debut for the nation he qualifies for via his parents in time for Qatar in 2022, although he was yet to make his first international start.

Now, with three goals in 34 caps, he is a player the Black Stars are turning towards to cause a stir.

“He’s done brilliant,” Ghana captain Jordan Ayew says before the game at Cardiff City Stadium.

“We all know the season he’s had. He took his form at Bournemouth to Manchester City and Ghanaians are proud of him and as a team we are proud of him.

“We just hope that he will keep on doing it – and doing it for Ghana.”

2026 WC: Why Thomas Partey is selected despite rape allegation charges – Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-why-thomas-partey-is-selected-despite-rape-allegation-charges-carlos-queiroz/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 19:24:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668007 Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has defended his decision to include Thomas Partey in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup despite the midfielder facing rape and sexual assault charges in England.

Partey has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving allegations made by four different women. The former Arsenal midfielder has pleaded not guilty to all charges and continues to maintain his innocence.

Speaking to the media on Monday ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, Queiroz said his stance was based on the legal principle that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

“It’s a simple and straightforward answer. As far as I know, in England, Portugal, and everywhere else, the presumption of innocence is afforded to the accused until a court reaches a decision,” he said.

“Unfortunately, in today’s society and on social media, people are often judged and condemned before they even have the opportunity to defend themselves.

“Let’s allow the process to take its natural course. One day, when the river meets the ocean, we are going to find the truth,” the 73-year-old added.

Partey is set to feature at his second FIFA World Cup after representing Ghana at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

His selection has become one of the most talked-about decisions in Queiroz’s squad announcement as the Black Stars continue preparations for the tournament in North America.

Ghana, who will be making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before taking on England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. They will wrap up their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

Ghana will be hoping to advance beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

2026 WC: We had to replace Alexander Djiku – Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-had-to-replace-alexander-djiku-black-stars-coach-carlos-queiroz/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 19:07:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2668000 Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has explained the decision to replace defender Alexander Djiku ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the centre-back’s injury setback in camp.

Djiku was initially named in Ghana’s provisional squad for the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer. However, the experienced defender is now expected to miss the competition after failing to recover from an injury sustained before joining camp.

The Spartak Moscow defender has been with the squad in Cardiff since last week but has been unable to train with his teammates due to the injury concern.

Speaking to the media ahead of Ghana’s international friendly against Wales on Tuesday, June 2, Queiroz confirmed that the technical team had decided to replace Djiku and insisted the squad still has enough quality in defence.

“We have to make a decision and replace Djiku. It doesn’t matter who the player that I called was; Djiku was replaced,” Queiroz said.

“Now we’re in the same group of central backs in camp. The names you know, you saw them today on the pitch. So we’re ready to take off.”

In response to Djiku’s absence, the Black Stars have handed a late call-up to Pafos defender Derrick Luckassen, who recently received his first invitation to the senior national team.

Luckassen is expected to strengthen Ghana’s defensive options as the team intensifies preparations for the World Cup.

Following the clash against Wales, the Black Stars will continue their preparations with another friendly against Jamaica on June 10.

Ghana, who will be making their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. They will conclude their group-stage matches against Croatia on June 27.

Ghana will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Derrick Luckassen joins Black Stars camp as Djiku’s World Cup hopes remain in doubt https://www.adomonline.com/derrick-luckassen-joins-black-stars-camp-as-djikus-world-cup-hopes-remain-in-doubt/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 15:18:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2667915 Ghana defender Derrick Luckassen has reported to the Black Stars camp ahead of the team’s international friendly against Wales and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The Pafos FC centre-back is expected to step into the squad in place of Alexander Djiku, who is set to miss the tournament due to injury.

Djiku, a key member of Ghana’s 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar, has been sidelined since arriving at camp last week and has not taken part in training sessions.

Luckassen’s inclusion is expected to form part of coach Carlos Queiroz’s final 26-man squad for the global showpiece.

The 30-year-old earned his first senior cap for Ghana in March during a friendly against Germany and has since strengthened his case with an impressive season in Cyprus.

At club level, he was a standout performer for Pafos FC, contributing significantly to both domestic competitions and European matches. He also featured in UEFA Champions League qualifiers, scoring once, underlining his experience at elite level competition.

His consistency, versatility, and leadership across the back line have made him a reliable option for both club and country.

Reports suggest Luckassen is expected to fully link up with the squad in the United States once final squad adjustments are completed.

His arrival is seen as a timely boost to Ghana’s defensive depth ahead of a demanding World Cup campaign.

The Black Stars continue their build-up with a friendly against Wales on Tuesday at the Cardiff City Stadium, before concluding preparations with a clash against Jamaica on June 10.

Ghana will then shift focus to the tournament proper, where they are drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Their campaign begins on June 17 against Panama at BMO Field, followed by a meeting with England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, before wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Big blow for Black Stars as Djiku likely to miss 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/big-blow-for-black-stars-as-djiku-likely-to-miss-2026-world-cup/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 14:30:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2667800 Ghana have been handed a major setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with defender Alexander Djiku expected to miss out on the final squad due to an ongoing injury concern.

Djiku, who was named in coach Carlos Queiroz’s 28-man provisional squad, arrived in camp in Cardiff already carrying a knock picked up after being withdrawn from Spartak Moscow’s Russian Cup final victory over FC Krasnodar, a match decided on penalties.

Although he has remained with the squad since last week, the experienced centre-back has not taken part in full training sessions, casting serious doubt over his chances of making the final 26-man squad as the deadline approaches.

Queiroz is expected to confirm his final World Cup squad on June 1, with Djiku now widely tipped to be among the players to miss out.

A key figure in Ghana’s defence since his debut in 2020, Djiku has earned 38 international caps and scored four goals. He also featured at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, bringing valuable experience to the team.

His potential absence leaves a significant gap in Ghana’s defensive options, with no official replacement yet announced.

Following the squad announcement, the Black Stars will continue their preparations in Wales, where they face Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on June 2, before a final warm-up match against Jamaica on June 10.

Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance in North America, drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before taking on England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Ghana will be targeting a place in the knockout stage for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in 2010.

2026 WC: Wales friendly a key dress rehearsal for Black Stars – Henry Asante Twum https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-wales-friendly-a-key-dress-rehearsal-for-black-stars-henry-asante-twum/ Mon, 01 Jun 2026 14:10:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2667905 Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the Black Stars’ international friendly against Wales will offer a crucial preview of the tactical and physical demands they are likely to face when they meet England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, at the Cardiff City Stadium, and forms part of Ghana’s final preparations for the tournament in North America, which kicks off later this month.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Asante Twum noted that Wales’ playing style shares similarities with England, making the fixture a useful benchmark ahead of Ghana’s Group L encounter with the Three Lions.

Although Wales did not qualify for the World Cup—falling short in the playoffs after a defeat to Montenegro—he insisted the team still offers a strong test for coach Carlos Queiroz and his squad.

“They’re playing a team that did not qualify for the World Cup, but obviously just to have a fair sense of what England will come up with,” he said.

“At the time we announced the Wales friendly, they were in the playoffs. Unfortunately, they didn’t go. They lost to Montenegro, and Montenegro went on to qualify at the expense of Italy. They also give us an idea of what to expect from England because Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland have similarities. They give us a fair idea of what to expect from the Lions.”

He added that the fixture will also help the technical team assess players in different tactical roles as Queiroz finalises his squad and system for the tournament.

According to him, versatility played a major role in squad selection, with emphasis placed on players capable of adapting across multiple positions and game scenarios.

“It also gives him the opportunity to look at players in different positions,” he explained.

“One of the things that went into coming up with this squad was seeing players in multifaceted positions. Players who can function in different areas, different patterns of play in attack, defence and midfield. Players who can play in different roles, different setups, different team structures and different team chemistry.”

With the World Cup fast approaching, Asante Twum believes the encounter will serve as an important competitive test before Ghana heads to North America.

“We expect Wales to give us a very good test,” he added.

Ghana, making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Ghana will be aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
