The 26-year-old, who recently joined Pep Guardiola’s side from fellow Premier League outfit AFC Bournemouth, had opened his City account at the weekend with a goal against Exeter City in the FA Cup third round.

City travelled to St James’ Park for the first leg of the EFL Cup tie, with both sides locked in a goalless stalemate at the break.

Semenyo thought he had broken the deadlock eight minutes into the second half, but his effort was ruled out following a VAR review.

The Ghana international, however, made amends in stoppage time, playing a key role as Rayan Cherki struck a superb second goal to secure a 2-0 away win for the reigning champions.

Semenyo has now become the first player to score in each of his first two appearances for Manchester City in all competitions since Emmanuel Adebayor achieved the feat in August 2009.

The result gives City a commanding advantage ahead of the return leg, scheduled for next week at the Etihad Stadium.

The blockbuster encounter is scheduled for Wednesday night at the Prince Moulay Abdallah Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off set for 20:00 GMT, as the Atlas Lions face the Super Eagles for a place in the final.

Laryea will be supported by an experienced officiating team. South Africa’s Zakhele Thusi Granville Siwela will serve as Assistant Referee 1, while Souru Phatsoane of Lesotho will act as Assistant Referee 2. Mozambique’s Arsenio Chadreque Maringule has been named Assistant Referee 3.

Rwandan official Samuel Uwikunda will take charge as Fourth Official, overseeing technical area conduct and substitutions.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has also confirmed a strong Video Assistant Referee (VAR) set-up for the semifinal. South Africa’s Abongile Tom will serve as the main VAR, assisted by Tunisia’s Haythem Guirat as Assistant VAR 1, with Kenya’s Stephen Onyango Yiembe as Assistant VAR 2.

Highly respected former Ethiopian referee Lidya Tafesse Abebe has been appointed Referee Assessor for the match.

Laryea comes into the semifinal with an impressive record at the tournament. He previously served as VAR during Morocco’s tense quarter-final victory over Cameroon, where several key decisions were reviewed under intense pressure. The Ghanaian referee also officiated the group-stage clash between Algeria and Burkina Faso as centre referee, further highlighting his growing stature on the continental stage.

I’m giving my all for Hearts of Oak – Didi Dramani https://www.adomonline.com/im-giving-my-all-for-hearts-of-oak-didi-dramani/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 12:45:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618800 Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has affirmed his commitment to the club despite the FIFA-imposed transfer ban.

Dramani, a former Black Stars assistant coach, was appointed ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season on a two-year contract, replacing Abubakar Ouattara.

His tenure has faced early challenges, with Hearts of Oak exiting the FA Cup. However, the club remains in the Premier League title race, sitting fifth with 31 points after 18 matches, six behind leaders Medeama SC.

The team’s struggles have been exacerbated by a transfer ban covering the next three registration windows, following unresolved payments owed to former technical director Rene Hiddink.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Dramani acknowledged the constraints but insisted he is giving his all despite being unable to strengthen his squad.

“I am doing my best for Hearts of Oak,” he said. “I just don’t know how to pretend. If I say I will work with you, I will do it. This is my apex as a coach, and this is the best I can do.”

Hearts of Oak returned from the mid-season break with a win and will look to continue their momentum when they host Dreams FC on Sunday in a Matchday 19 fixture at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Manchester United: Michael Carrick to bring in Steve Holland on staff https://www.adomonline.com/manchester-united-michael-carrick-to-bring-in-steve-holland-on-staff/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 10:06:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618831 Michael Carrick has agreed to become Manchester United interim head coach – and former England assistant manager Steve Holland is set to be his number two.

Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion will also be part of Carrick’s staff.

Former United and England midfielder Carrick agreed a deal on Monday night, with an announcement due on Tuesday once the necessary paperwork has been signed.

United sacked Ruben Amorim after 14 months on 5 January and Darren Fletcher took charge as caretaker boss for two matches.

Carrick will be in the dugout for Saturday’s Premier League derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford.

The 44-year-old had a three-game stint as United’s temporary boss after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal in 2021.

Holland worked under Gareth Southgate when England finished fourth at the 2018 World Cup and were runners-up at Euro 2021 and 2024.

He spent several years with Chelsea, where he had major success under a number of managers.

The 55-year-old was sacked as manager of Japanese club Yokohama F Marinos in April after only four months in charge.

Woodgate worked under Carrick at Middlesbrough and was a team-mate of United director of football Jason Wilcox at Leeds.

Woodgate managed Boro between 2019 and 2020 and had a short spell as Bournemouth manager in 2021.

Former United defender Evans will return to Old Trafford. Binnion is already part of the club’s coaching staff.

Carrick held face-to-face talks with United officials last Thursday and is understood to have impressed chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Wilcox with his vision for the team.

Carrick is set to play a 4-2-3-1 system, a move away from the three at the back set-up employed by Amorim.

Solskjaer, who has played and managed United, also held talks with the hierarchy over the vacancy.

But Carrick has been chosen given he is more of a hands-on coach than Solskjaer.

Fletcher, who took charge of the games against Burnley and Brighton immediately after Amorim’s exit, will return to the Under-18s.

United view him as a key part of their coaching staff moving forward but it was mutually agreed that a return to the Under-18s is best to continue his development.

Villarreal to end Thomas Partey stay at end of season https://www.adomonline.com/villarreal-to-end-thomas-partey-stay-at-end-of-season/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 06:42:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618539 Ghana international Thomas Partey is set to leave Villarreal at the end of his contract in June.

Reports from Spain indicate that head coach Marcelino García Toral has confirmed the midfielder is not part of his plans for the upcoming season.

The 32-year-old joined the La Liga side on a two-year deal ahead of the current campaign after five seasons at Arsenal. Since his arrival, he has struggled for regular playing time, featuring in just 18 matches across all competitions.

According to Transferfeed, Marcelino has already informed the club’s management that Partey will not be retained beyond the expiration of his contract.

The former Atletico Madrid midfielder is therefore expected to depart when his deal concludes on June 30, 2026.

Transfermarkt currently values Partey at around €5 million.

Hearts of Oak coach optimistic over transfer ban resolution https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-coach-optimistic-over-transfer-ban-resolution/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 06:33:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618527 Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has expressed hope that the club’s ongoing transfer ban will be lifted in the near future.

The Ghana Premier League side is currently barred from registering or selling players after failing to settle unpaid wages owed to former technical director Rene Hiddink.

The Dutch coach, who joined the Phobians in 2023 but left after eight months, dragged the club to FIFA over what he described as an unfair termination of his contract.

FIFA subsequently ruled in Hiddink’s favour, ordering Hearts of Oak to pay $150,000 within 90 days. The club’s failure to comply with the directive has resulted in a transfer ban spanning the next three transfer windows.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Dramani admitted the situation has been challenging but stressed that his focus remains on on-field matters while management handles the off-field issues.

“My work is on the pitch while the hierarchy of the club deals with the external issues, but I hope the transfer ban will be resolved so I can bring in players who can help strengthen the team,” he said.

Kotoko secure Dogo Yakubu from Midcity Football Academy https://www.adomonline.com/kotoko-secure-dogo-yakubu-from-midcity-football-academy/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 06:31:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618517 Asante Kotoko have completed the signing of 21-year-old forward Dogo Yakubu in the ongoing winter transfer window.

The promising attacker has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract after successfully passing his medicals.

Yakubu joins the Porcupine Warriors from Midcity Football Academy, where he developed his game and gained valuable senior-level experience.

Speaking after completing the move, the young forward expressed excitement about the opportunity to join the Kumasi-based giants.

“I’m still young, and I believe I have a huge chance here to make a name for myself,” Yakubu said.

“Joining Kotoko is a big opportunity for my career, and I’m grateful for the trust the club has shown in me. I’m ready to work hard, learn every day, and take my chances when they come.

“I want to improve, score goals, and help the team succeed,” he added.

Head coach Karim Zito explained that Yakubu’s signing aligns with the club’s long-term vision.

“This signing is part of our plan for the future. Dogo is young, hungry, and has the qualities we look for in a modern striker,” Zito said.

Renowned for his pace, intelligent movement and eye for goal, Yakubu is viewed as a long-term attacking prospect as Kotoko continue to strengthen their squad.

He becomes the club’s second signing of the January transfer window, following the arrival of Prince Badu from Nations FC.

I hope his impressive form continues here – Pep Guardiola on Semenyo https://www.adomonline.com/i-hope-his-impressive-form-continues-here-pep-guardiola-on-semenyo/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 06:30:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618514 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has praised Antoine Semenyo following the Ghanaian forward’s impressive debut, expressing optimism that the striker can sustain his strong start at the club.

Semenyo, who recently completed a £65 million move from AFC Bournemouth, made his first appearance for the Premier League champions in their FA Cup Third Round clash against Exeter City.

The 26-year-old marked the occasion with a goal and an assist, as City cruised to a commanding 10-1 victory over the lower-league side.

Speaking ahead of City’s EFL Cup tie against Newcastle United, Guardiola highlighted that the qualities Semenyo showed during his time at Bournemouth were already evident in his brief debut outing.

“He is a nice guy. He showed in a few actions [against Exeter] what he showed at Bournemouth, and hopefully he can continue to do it here,” Guardiola said.

Known for his versatility across the attacking line and direct style of play, Semenyo is expected to be in contention for selection in the upcoming clash at St James’ Park.

Why Hearts of Oak dropped Solomon Agbasi for Hohoe United clash https://www.adomonline.com/why-hearts-of-oak-dropped-solomon-agbasi-for-hohoe-united-clash/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 06:27:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618499 Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has clarified the reason behind the absence of goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi from the matchday squad in the club’s clash against Hohoe United.

Agbasi, a former Dreams FC shot-stopper, has been one of Hearts’ standout performers since making his debut against Swedru All Blacks in November last year. His omission from the squad for the Phobians’ Matchday 18 encounter, however, sparked speculation among fans and pundits.

In his absence, Benjamin Asare returned to the starting lineup after spending weeks on the sidelines, as Hearts recorded a narrow 1-0 victory at the Hohoe Sports Stadium. Mawuli Wayo scored the decisive goal to secure all three points for the Accra-based side.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Dramani was quick to dismiss any rumours surrounding Agbasi’s omission, explaining that the decision was taken purely for the player’s welfare.

“Solomon Agbasi wasn’t on the bench against Hohoe United because I gave him a mental and physical break,” Didi Dramani said.

“The mental break meant not being on the bench at all, so he could properly rest,” he added.

The Hearts coach also expressed confidence in both Agbasi and Asare, backing the duo to earn call-ups to the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Why Alonso’s reign is over at Real Madrid https://www.adomonline.com/why-alonsos-reign-is-over-at-real-madrid/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 04:28:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618489 The images travelled fast. Kylian Mbappe gesturing for his team-mates to leave the pitch. Xabi Alonso asking him to stay. Mbappe insisting. And Xabi, eventually, turning away and doing as his star demanded. No guard of honour for Barcelona after their Spanish Super Cup win on Sunday.

For many, it looked like a lack of sporting grace, something never associated with Xabi Alonso. It also suggested something else entirely, that the team, not the manager, was in charge.

And after a final that had been tight, decided by a deflection, you could almost imagine Xabi thinking: enough.

But this was not a resignation. And it was not planned. Xabi Alonso did not expect to be leaving as Real Madrid boss – just seven and a half months after being appointed. Not yet anyway.

In the official statement, Real Madrid described the departure as “mutual agreement” but it was a departure that was ultimately inevitable.

After many disagreements with their manager about tactics and approach over the last few months, at around 4.30pm Spanish time on Monday, the board met with one subject on the table – the departure of Xabi Alonso.

The explanations offered to him and his entourage were, at best, ambiguous.

‘He had not been able to implement the football that had made him so successful at Bayer Leverkusen’. ‘The team’s physical condition was not ideal’. ‘Players had not improved’. ‘They did not appear to be playing for him’.

Defeats were listed: Paris St-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final, Atletico Madrid in La Liga (5–2), among others.

And yet Real Madrid are in the top eight in the Champions League league phase, the competition that defines them.

They are through to the next round of the Copa del Rey and are four points behind Barcelona at the halfway point of La Liga, having beaten the Catalans when they met in October. Crisis?

More than a crisis, it was confirmation that Florentino Perez never truly believed in his manager.

Xabi Alonso was suggested to him and agreed to as the club’s new boss, but without conviction. At his previous club Bayer Leverkusen, not everyone bought into Xabi from day one either.

Results arrived, and the squad turned towards him. At Madrid, even with decent results, that never happened. From the start, Xabi felt alone.

Beginning a managerial career at Real Madrid is the hardest challenge in football. Nobody says no to Madrid, not even those who understand how difficult it is to transform a culture built on individual brilliance into a modern collective where everyone presses and everyone defends.

A manager is strongest when he arrives, but Madrid dented his authority from the beginning.

He wanted to start his tenure after the Club World Cup, not before it. The tournament was played after a long season, with players thinking about holidays and others knowing they would not be there the following year. He was not even allowed to discuss it.

The signings did little to help: Franco Mastantuono, sold by parts of the media as the anti-Lamine Yamal, made no real impact.

Vinicius Junior’s crisis marked the beginning of the end, with his form dipping and blaming the new manager, he then visibly protested his substitution in El Clasico, then apologising to everyone except the manager.

Contract talks were paused to see what happened with Xabi.

Injuries ravaged the defence, while the club ignored his request for a midfielder (he wanted Martin Zubimendi).

There were no strong personalities to bind the group together. Even Federico Valverde seemed more concerned with where he played than with the collective.

Mbappe chased records, not always what he needed to recover from his latest injury, playing to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s 59 goals in a calendar year.

Xabi never managed to convince the players his way was the right way. And without that, he could not impose the high press, the tempo, the positional football that defined his Leverkusen side.

So what now?

He must decide whether rest is what is coming next for him. Those that know him think that leaving, even though not wanted, will be a bit of a relief. It simply did not work.

But the message from Europe’s biggest clubs is clear, many would be happy to have him next season, if circumstances allow.

Real Madrid, once again, are viewed as outliers – a club that operates differently, restricts its manager, and even quietly prepares the ground for a dismissal months before it happens, aided by loyal media.

Next in line is Alvaro Arbeloa, Castilla coach. A club man. But if a legend like Xabi Alonso could not change the culture, Arbeloa faces an almost impossible task.

If this season ends without trophies, Europe’s elite will feel confirmed in their belief. If, by one of football’s familiar contradictions, Real Madrid end up lifting silverware, we will reach the same conclusion we always do.

That some managers fit certain clubs. And some clubs refuse to be managed at all.

Carabao Cup semifinals: The battle for Wembley begins https://www.adomonline.com/carabao-cup-semifinals-the-battle-for-wembley-begins/ Tue, 13 Jan 2026 04:25:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618482 The battle for Wembley begins, as the Carabao Cup reaches the semifinal stage, with two heavyweight first legs that promise tension, intensity and no shortage of narrative. Across Tuesday and Wednesday nights, Newcastle United host Manchester City before Chelsea welcome Arsenal, with both ties finely poised and everything still to play for ahead of the return fixtures.

Newcastle United enter their semifinal as defending champions, a status that has subtly but significantly altered expectations at St James’ Park. Last season’s triumph ended a long wait for silverware and gave Eddie Howe’s side tangible proof that they can handle the pressure of knockout football.

Yet defending a trophy often brings a different kind of challenge, and it scarcely gets tougher than welcoming Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. City’s recent history in this competition is formidable; the Carabao Cup has long been a platform for Guardiola to rotate smartly while still maintaining an elite level, and their serial success has turned midweek cup nights into familiar territory. For Newcastle, the task will be to harness the energy of a fervent home crowd while managing City’s ability to control games through possession and positional discipline.

The Magpies’ physicality, intensity and growing tactical maturity will be tested to their limits, and the first leg carries added importance: any advantage taken into the Etihad could be priceless. City, meanwhile, will be keen to assert authority early, knowing that a strong away performance could effectively tilt the tie in their favour before the second leg is even played.

If Newcastle versus City is about pedigree against ambition, Chelsea versus Arsenal is pure rivalry sharpened by contrasting motivations. Meetings between these London giants are rarely short on edge, and a semifinal setting only heightens the stakes.

For Chelsea, this tie feels especially significant. Enzo Maresca’s project has shown flashes of promise, but tangible success is the currency that truly convinces supporters and accelerates belief. A deep cup run – and potentially a trophy – would validate the direction of travel and provide a platform for further growth.

Arsenal, on the other hand, arrive with broader horizons. Chasing honours on all fronts demands squad depth, focus and mental resilience, but the Carabao Cup could represent something more symbolic: the trophy that opens the floodgates. For a side often praised for style and progress, lifting silverware can transform momentum and confidence, reinforcing a winning culture across competitions.

Both semifinals, live on SuperSport Premier League and SuperSport Maximo 2, offer compelling contrasts and shared urgency. First legs are often about balance – ambition tempered by caution – but with pride, rivalry and opportunity all in play, neither tie feels destined to drift quietly toward its conclusion. Instead, these nights promise decisive moments, strategic battles and the sense that the season’s first major statement could be made before the final whistle even sounds.

Xabi Alonso leaves Real Madrid after only seven months as head coach https://www.adomonline.com/xabi-alonso-leaves-real-madrid-after-only-seven-months-as-head-coach/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 17:59:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618445 Xabi Alonso has left Real Madrid and been replaced by former Liverpool team-mate Alvaro Arbeloa.

Former Liverpool full-back Arbeloa will take charge, being promoted from his role as head coach of development side Real Madrid Castilla.

The club released a statement on Monday, which reads: “Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach.

“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.

“Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire technical team for their work and dedication during this time, and wishes them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives.”

Real face Albacete in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, but defeat by Barcelona in the final of the Supercopa de Espana in Jeddah on Sunday proved to be Alonso’s final appearance in the dug-out.

Speaking in his final press conference before his dismissal, Alonso said in the aftermath of the damaging and ultimately defining 3-2 loss to Barcelona: “We have to move on as soon as possible. It’s the least important of the competitions we play. We have to look forward, try to get players back [from injury], get our morale back and keep going.”

But Real’s direction of travel will no longer include Alonso at the helm.

The 44-year-old had previously been strongly linked with succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool before Arne Slot was appointed, but is now unemployed having failed to collect any silverware from his seven months in charge, but a win percentage of 70% having lost six of his 34 games in charge.

Why Real have promoted Arbeloa

Following the mutual agreement to relieve Alonso of his duties, Arbeloa will now assume the role on a permanent basis with the club moving swiftly to appoint an internal successor.

Arbeloa has been Castilla coach since June 2025, having spent his entire coaching career at Real Madrid’s academy since 2020. He has worked his way gradually through the youth team set-up, coaching the Infantil A in 2020/21, Cadete A in 2021/22 and Juvenil A from 2022 to 2025, winning the treble in 2022/23 – league, Copa del Rey and Champions Cup – and the league title again in 2024/25.

As a player, Arbeloa was part of one of the most successful periods in Madrid’s history, making 238 appearances between 2009 and 2016 and winning eight major trophies, including two Champions Leagues. He was also a key member of Spain’s golden generation, earning 56 caps and lifting the 2010 World Cup and European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

During his time as a player at Liverpool, the 42-year-old moved to Merseyside on deadline day in January 2007, signed by Rafa Benitez and offloaded back to Madrid two years later in the summer of 2009 having collected just a Champions League runners-up medal from his time at Anfield.

While Madrid are four points behind rivals Barcelona in La Liga, their Champions League campaign to date has seen two of their six league fixtures end in defeat.

Real currently sit seventh in the standings, just inside the automatic spots for a last-16 berth, with a home tie with Monaco and a trip to Lisbon to face Benfica will to play in the league phase.

In a message shared on social media on Saturday, Fathi thanked supporters for their backing and confirmed his decision to step aside.

Kotoko players disappointed me against Berekum Chelsea – Karim Zito https://www.adomonline.com/kotoko-players-disappointed-me-against-berekum-chelsea-karim-zito/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 13:34:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618261 Asante Kotoko head coach Karim Zito has expressed his frustration following his team’s lacklustre performance in their 0-0 draw against Berekum Chelsea.

The Porcupine Warriors hosted the relegation-threatened side at Baba Yara Stadium in the Matchday 18 fixture but failed to find the back of the net, leaving Kotoko in fourth place on the league table with 31 points.

“I’m disappointed in my boys. All week, I wish you could have observed our training sessions,” Zito said after the game.

“We focused a lot on finishing, but unfortunately, the players were not focused. With all seriousness and honesty, I cannot accept this result, but it won’t stop me from fighting for the league title.”

The former Black Satellites coach emphasized the need to bounce back, noting that 16 matches remain in the season.

“We have 16 matches left, and we must go back to work and ensure we win our away games to make amends,” he added.

Kotoko will aim to regain momentum when they travel to face defending champions Bibiani GoldStars in their Matchday 19 clash.

Ghana’s Black Maidens are set to begin their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign in April, marking the team’s return to international competition after serving a suspension over age-related violations.

In the opening round, Nana Joe Adarkwa’s side will face Togo, with the winner advancing to play either Liberia or Libya in the next stage of the qualifiers.

The draw for the African qualifiers was held on Saturday in Rabat, officially launching the continent’s journey to the Morocco 2026 tournament.

First-round matches are scheduled to take place between April 10 and 19, with first-leg fixtures kicking off on April 10 and return legs set for April 17.

A total of 31 African nations will compete in the qualifiers, which will be played over three knockout rounds on a home-and-away basis.

At the end of the third round, four teams will earn qualification to represent Africa at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals in Morocco.

Agbetsi and Asare deserve places in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup Squad – Didi Dramani https://www.adomonline.com/agbetsi-and-asare-deserve-places-in-ghanas-2026-world-cup-squad-didi-dramani/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 09:24:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618107 Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has called for both of the club’s goalkeepers, Benjamin Asare and Solomon Agbetsi, to be included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Asare, Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper since his debut in March 2025, maintained his spot throughout the World Cup qualifying campaign. However, the former Great Olympics shot-stopper struggled for consistent playing time after sustaining an injury during an international friendly against South Korea in November last year. He returned to action in Hearts’ hard-fought 1-0 win over Hohoe United.

In Asare’s absence, Agbetsi stepped up impressively. The former Dreams FC goalkeeper made his Hearts of Oak debut against Swedru All Blacks on November 15 and has since established himself as the team’s preferred option between the posts.

“Benjamin Asare and Solomon Agbetsi must be in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup. Both of them have been at the Black Galaxies, and with how they are performing, both of them must be in the squad,” Didi Dramani told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“Hearts of Oak have been in a similar position before. Both of them are performing, and they must be there,” he added.

Didi Dramani also confirmed that Benjamin Asare remains the club captain. The coach is expected to start Asare in Hearts’ upcoming Matchday 19 clash against Dreams FC at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Ghana’s head coach, Otto Addo, is scheduled to announce the final World Cup squad on June 1.

Hearts of Oak Board are impressed with my work – Didi Dramani https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-board-are-impressed-with-my-work-didi-dramani/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 08:48:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618087 Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has played down speculation over his future, insisting the club’s board remains satisfied with his work despite recent inconsistencies in results.

Didi Dramani, who took charge ahead of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, has faced mounting scrutiny as the Phobians struggled for consistency in the first round of the campaign.

However, Hearts of Oak began the second half of the season on a positive note, securing a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Hohoe United on Saturday to ease some of the pressure.

Reflecting on his tenure, the former Black Stars assistant coach emphasised that the club’s hierarchy continues to back him.

“It’s’s the board that employed me, so if they were not happy with me, they would have informed me to quit or sacked me,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

“For me, what is important is that we always meet, regardless of a win or a loss. We need to evaluate what we are doing so we can share ideas. It should not always be one-sided. I always want to learn and improve on what I do as a coach,” Didi Dramani added.

Hearts of Oak will now aim to sustain that momentum when they host Dreams FC in their Matchday 19 fixture on Sunday at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Pressure has mounted on the former Black Satellites coach following a run of inconsistent results, raising questions about his long-term position at the club.

Kotoko’s latest setback came on Sunday when they were held to a goalless draw by relegation-threatened Berekum Chelsea in a Matchday 18 encounter at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Addressing the media after the match, Zito defended his record, pointing to trophies already secured and the team’s sustained competitiveness across all competitions.

“If I leave Kotoko today, I will leave with pride. In less than a year, we have won trophies, including the Toyota Cup,” he said. “We remain in the FA Cup, and in the league, the title is still open, with any team in the top five capable of winning it.”

Asante Kotoko currently sit 4th on the league log with 31 points.

Zito will now aim to steer the Porcupine Warriors back to winning ways when they face defending champions Bibiani GoldStars at DUN’s Park in their Matchday 19 fixture on Sunday.

Morocco coach angrily rejects AFCON ref bias as Nigeria semifinal looms https://www.adomonline.com/morocco-coach-angrily-rejects-afcon-ref-bias-as-nigeria-semifinal-looms/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 07:52:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618057 Morocco coach Walid Regragui has angrily rejected suggestions his team is benefitting from favourable refereeing decisions as the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) host.

The Atlas Lions will face fellow favourites, Nigeria, in a titanic semifinal on Wednesday.

“We’re the team to beat. As the team to beat, people will try to find all sorts of reasons to say Morocco has an advantage,” Regragui said after his team’s 2-0 win over Cameroon in the quarterfinals.

“The only advantage that Morocco has at this Africa Cup is playing in front of 65,000 spectators. The rest is on the field, we speak on the field.”

On the field, however, Cameroon might have had two penalties if experienced referee Dahane Beida hadn’t decided in favour of the home team.

Morocco defender Adam Masina was involved in both, appearing to catch Bryan Mbuemo’s right boot after missing the ball when Cameroon was trying to level the match, then, in the final minutes, appearing to strike Etta Eyong’s head with his elbow in the penalty area.

Beida, who refereed the final at the last edition, also decided not to show Bilal El Khannouss a second yellow card for stopping Danny Namaso on a counterattack shortly before Ismael Saibari wrapped up the win.

“Many people want to believe or make others believe that we have advantages from the referees. Personally, I saw penalties that could have been awarded to us. As for the referees, I never talk about the referee,” Regragui said.

The Morocco coach then spoke about a penalty his team was not awarded against South Africa in the previous tournament in the Ivory Coast, and wrongly said he was “suspended for no reason” at that tournament.

Regragui was suspended for two games at the previous edition for his role in a dispute with Congo captain Chancel Mbemba at the end of their game that led to a melee between players and team officials.

“The statistics always show us as better than the others,” Regragui said, getting back to this edition. “We create far more opportunities than our opponents. Not a single goal was disallowed for Cameroon, or for any other team. When you want to get rid of something, you find a pretext.”

Mali and Tanzania also had penalty claims against Morocco rejected in previous games, while Morocco also had a penalty awarded after a VAR check in the draw against Mali.

Thousands of whistling Moroccan fans tried to help referee Abdou Abdel Mefire make up his mind while he consulted replays before he eventually decided to penalise Mali’s Nathan Gassama for handball. He initially ignored Jawad El Yamiq’s penalty-area foul on Mali’s Lassine Sinayoko before awarding it some minutes later after a VAR check.

There did not appear to be any VAR checks against Cameroon on Friday.

Morocco has played all its matches at the nearly 70,000-capacity Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where the vast majority of supporters are shouting for the home team, creating an intimidating atmosphere for opponents and referees.

“Today, Cameroon played the match they needed to play. I think they lost against a better team. I don’t think any player, coach, or anyone else is going to talk about the refereeing because there were a lot of physical battles today. This is Africa. But today, I think we deserved our victory,” said Regragui, who added his team also deserved to win all its previous games.

“That’s it. We’re trying to play on that field. I don’t think it’s fair play from those who want to see us fall. The best team will win this tournament, inshallah,” he said.

Morocco will play Nigeria at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, which is also the venue for the final on January 18.

The Atlas Lions are among the heavy favourites to win the tournament, having become the first African nation to reach the semifinals of a FIFA World Cup at the Qatar 2022 edition.

‘Fragile’ Man Utd set for fewest games in season since 1914-15 https://www.adomonline.com/fragile-man-utd-set-for-fewest-games-in-season-since-1914-15/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 07:48:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2618052 Life moves fast at Manchester United.

When Brighton last visited Old Trafford 11 weeks ago, a third successive win seemed to be a clear sign of a corner being turned under Ruben Amorim.

Wind forward to the present day.

The grey clouds enveloped Old Trafford and the rain fell during Sunday’s FA Cup third-round defeat by Brighton. It was a fitting metaphor.

Amorim is gone, United have fallen at the first hurdle in both domestic cup competitions for the first time since 1981-82. They are condemned to a 40-game season, the fewest they have played since 1914-15.

The world’s oldest person, 116-year-old Ethel Caterham, was five at the time, so even she probably doesn’t remember it.

After a two-game trip to Asia at the end of last season to plug a financial hole, now the mooted mid-season trip to Saudi Arabia has to become more likely – as there is a 10-day window in United’s season in February and March, given the FA Cup fourth and fifth round weekends are, for them, blank.

Before that, United host Manchester City next Saturday with no manager in place to lift their “fragile” confidence.

They have one win in seven games, a fortunate triumph against Newcastle on 26 December.

Out of 13 matches since the previous Brighton visit, they have enjoyed three victories.

While their current position of seventh in the Premier League is not catastrophic, if results against Manchester City and Arsenal go to form, they could be firmly in the bottom half of the table by the time they entertain Fulham on 1 February, when the 1958 Group of supporters plan a mass demonstration against the ownership.

Where do Man Utd go from here?

For context, Bradford Park Avenue and The Wednesday were two of the teams United played in that 1914-15 season.

It was 1948 before they won the FA Cup again and 1952 before they won the league, doing so for the first time under Sir Matt Busby.

The 41-year gap between titles was by far the longest in their history.

By the end of this season, it will be 13 years since United last won the league – half the gap between Busby’s final success in 1967 and Sir Alex Ferguson’s first in 1993.

Yet there is no sense United are on the right track.

Interim boss Darren Fletcher tried to say the right things as he summed up United’s FA Cup exit. But there is no certainty what he wants for the club will come to fruition.

“Don’t waste the season,” he added. “That would be the challenge I would set.

“It’s not a great moment, let’s be honest. We are out of the cups early.

“But true character shows itself at difficult times.

“There’s still a Champions League place to fight for – and I still think that can be achieved this season.

“It’s probably not what fans want to hear about Manchester United because we should be winning cups and challenging for the Premier League. But it is probably the object of this season.

“All the players’ focus and energy should go into improving as a team – and improving quickly.

“Anything other than that is just noise.”

‘Zero indications’

The problem at Manchester United is that the noise is huge.

There is no shortage of opinion on the club from within the game, including a host of legendary ex-United players – from Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, who sat alongside Sir Alex Ferguson watching this sorry mess unfold.

Whoever replaces Fletcher must be able to deal with that reality.

Amorim said he felt United’s ownership was influenced too much by external noise. Failure to win, an inevitability for United in their current guise, just increases the pressure.

Former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his one-time coach Michael Carrick are the frontrunners.

Both have played for United. Both know the pressures that come with the job.

Fletcher says he has no idea what happens now, beyond his own meeting with club officials on Monday.

“I have to report tomorrow morning to Carrington, that is all I know,” he said.

“I will find out tomorrow morning. I have had zero indications.”

There was a theory Fletcher might put himself into contention with positive results against Burnley and Brighton.

That did not happen.

Instead, Fletcher is set to discover whether he will remain within the first-team set-up or drop back to his substantive role with the Under-18 squad.

United’s players have two pre-planned days off, so the build-up to Manchester City will begin on Wednesday, by which time, the club’s short-term future should become clear.

‘They need to help themselves’

Fletcher genuinely hopes for the best. You could tell from the emotion in his final answer as interim boss.

“It is a massive responsibility to lead this club,” he said.

“I have given it my best and I am disappointed not to win a game.

“I think there are some good things there but ultimately it wasn’t enough. I am more disappointed about that than anyone.

“I care for the club, I want the club to do well and I want the players to do well. I mean that.

“I have had my time as a player and loved every minute of it.

“Now it is about them. We need to help them, the club needs to help them, they need to help themselves.”

On Friday, Eleven Wonders claimed a 2-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars at the University of Ghana Stadium, thanks to a brace from Rauf Munah.

Saturday saw Hearts of Oak edge past Hohoe United 1-0 at the Hohoe Stadium, with Mawuli Wayo’s late strike securing the three points for the Phobian Club.

Sunday produced some thrilling action. Aduana FC came from behind to beat Karela United 2-1 at Nana Agyemang Badu I Park. The visitors initially took the lead through an own goal in the 27th minute, but Alex Boakye converted a penalty four minutes later to level the scores. With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Charles Gyamfi Kamara scored deep into added time to clinch the win for the ‘Ogya’ lads.

At Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Bechem United edged defending champions Bibiani GoldStars 1-0, courtesy of Augustine Okrah’s 15th-minute strike.

Dreams FC continued their fine form with a 3-0 triumph over Heart of Lions at the Tuba Astro Turf. John Antwi opened the scoring just before halftime, Collins Boah doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, and Adams Aminu wrapped up the victory in the 60th.

Medeama SC also recorded a convincing 3-0 win, defeating Young Apostles. Kamaradini Mamudu struck twice in the first half, with Prince Owusu adding a third in the 86th minute.

Elsewhere, FC Samartex and Vision FC played out a goalless draw at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena. Swedru All Blacks were held 1-1 by Nations FC at the Swedru Stadium. After Suweidu Sulemana put the visitors ahead in the 81st minute, Zayat Bubakari’s late strike rescued a point for the home side. At Baba Yara Stadium, Asante Kotoko were held to a 0-0 draw by Berekum Chelsea.

Following Matchday 18, Medeama SC, Bibiani GoldStars, Aduana FC, and Asante Kotoko occupy the top four positions, while Berekum Chelsea, Hohoe United, and Eleven Wonders remain in the relegation zone.

Barcelona beat Real Madrid to retain Spanish Super Cup https://www.adomonline.com/barcelona-beat-real-madrid-to-retain-spanish-super-cup/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 22:08:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617964 Barcelona edged past Real Madrid in a five-goal thriller to win back-to-back Spanish Super Cup finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

It marked a 16th triumph in the tournament for Hansi Flick’s side, with Barcelona also beating Los Blancos in last year’s final.

Brazilian forward Raphinha’s floated shot in the 73rd minute proved to be the winner after a frantic ending to the first half.

Three quick-fire goals in first-half stoppage time put the two on level terms at the break after Raphinha had opened the scoring, drilling into the bottom corner in the 36th minute.

Vinicius Jr equalised two minutes into three of added time, nutmegging Jules Kounde on a brilliant run before sliding into the far corner to score his first Real goal in 17 games, since 4 October, 2025.

Robert Lewandowski then clipped in off the post to restore Barca’s lead in the 49th minute.

But Gonzalo Garcia hooked in three minutes later after a scramble in the box that saw Dean Huijsen’s header hit the bar, as Barca boss Flick protested the half-time whistle should already have been blown.

Frenkie de Jong was shown a straight red card in stoppage time after lunging in on Kylian Mbappe, who came on as a substitute having recovered from a knee injury.

Late chances at both ends made for a nervy finale with Marcus Rashford shooting wide when clear, while Alvaro Carreras and then Raul Asencio both shot straight at goalkeeper Joan Garcia.

But Barca held on to secure a second consecutive title for the first time since 2011.

Man Utd out of FA Cup as Welbeck leads Brighton victory https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-out-of-fa-cup-as-welbeck-leads-brighton-victory/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 22:05:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617961 Managerless Manchester United completed an unwanted cup double as former striker Danny Welbeck helped Brighton send them crashing out of the FA Cup at Old Trafford.

In front of his old boss Sir Alex Ferguson and with former team-mate Darren Fletcher in interim charge at his old club, Welbeck belted home Brighton’s second to send them into the fourth round.

It was the 35-year-old’s eighth goal against United and his sixth visiting the stadium he used to call home.

The thunderous drive into the roof of Senne Lammens’ goal doubled a lead given to Brighton by Brajan Gruda’s first-half opener.

Benjamin Sesko’s header five minutes from time breathed life into the home side but 18-year-old home substitute Shea Lacey was sent off in the final minute and Brighton held on for their first ever FA Cup victory against the 13-time winners at the seventh attempt.

For United, this defeat followed up the embarrassing EFL Cup second-round exit at League Two Grimsby, meaning they had exited both domestic cup competitions at the earliest possible stage for the first time since 1981-82.

It also means Fletcher’s two-game stint as interim boss contributed a disappointing Premier League draw against Burnley and this home defeat to a campaign that is beginning to unravel.

United have now won once in their last seven games, with title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal their next two opponents.

Within the next 48 hours, the club are due to name who will replace Ruben Amorim until the end of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick viewed as the frontrunners.

Inter went ahead in the ninth minute when Federico Dimarco latched on to Marcus Thuram’s pass and fired home from an acute angle.

Eljif Elmas played a ball into the path of McTominay, who burst into the box and scored at the near post to equalise for Napoli with 26 minutes played.

The hosts went back in front in the 73rd minute when Hakan Calhanoglu’s thunderous penalty went in off the post with goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic diving the wrong way.

Amir Rrahmani was judged to have caught Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the box – and Conte was dismissed for his angry reaction to the decision.

However, Napoli drew level once more through McTominay’s superb first-time finish into the bottom corner nine minutes from time.

Inter are three points ahead of rivals Milan while Napoli move up to third, level on points with Roma.

Cristian Chivu’s side have the chance to increase their lead to six points when they host Lecee on Wednesday (19:45 GMT).

Andre Ayew makes NAC Breda debut in goalless draw against FC Groningen https://www.adomonline.com/andre-ayew-makes-nac-breda-debut-in-goalless-draw-against-fc-groningen/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 15:21:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617922 Andre Ayew marked his return to competitive football with a debut appearance for NAC Breda in their goalless away draw against FC Groningen in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday.

The Ghana forward, who had been without a club for six months following his departure from French outfit Le Havre, signed for the Dutch side earlier this month on a deal running until the end of the season.

Ayew was introduced in the 57th minute of the Matchday 18 encounter at the Euroborg Stadium, replacing young French attacker Moussa Soumano, as Breda sought to inject experience into their forward line.

Despite limited time to settle, the former Ghana captain made a positive impression during his 33-minute outing, recording 20 touches, attempting a shot, completing a successful dribble and winning several aerial and ground duels to steady NAC’s attacking play.

The contest also highlighted a strong Ghanaian contingent, with Ayew featuring alongside compatriots Denis Odoi and Kamal Sowah in a closely fought encounter.

The stalemate leaves NAC Breda rooted in the relegation zone, 17th on the Eredivisie standings with 14 points from 18 matches.

Ayew and his teammates will now shift focus to a crucial home clash against NEC Nijmegen at the Rat Verlegh Stadion as they continue their fight for survival.

Benjamin Asare remains our first-choice goalkeeper and captain – Didi Dramani https://www.adomonline.com/benjamin-asare-remains-our-first-choice-goalkeeper-and-captain-didi-dramani/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 15:05:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617920 Hearts of Oak head coach Didi Dramani has reiterated his unwavering faith in Benjamin Asare, insisting the goalkeeper remains the club’s undisputed first choice whenever he is fit and available.

Asare returned to action after several weeks on the sidelines through injury, reclaiming his place between the posts as the Phobians edged Hohoe United 1-0 at the Hohoe Stadium. Muwuli Wayo’s late strike sealed the win.

Speaking after the match, Dramani was forthright in underlining Asare’s status and influence within the squad, describing him as both the team’s number one goalkeeper and its captain.

“Benjamin Asare is our number one goalkeeper and the captain. Whenever he is fit and ready, he gets the nod to start,” Dramani stated.

The goalkeeper’s comeback is seen as a timely boost for Hearts of Oak as they aim to gather momentum in the second half of the season, with the head coach clearly placing his trust in Asare’s leadership and reliability at the back.

Hearts of Oak now turn their attention to a home clash against Dreams FC at the University of Ghana Stadium in the Matchday 19 fixtures this weekend.

2025 AFCON: Morocco face Nigeria, Senegal play Egypt in blockbuster semifinals https://www.adomonline.com/2025-afcon-morocco-face-nigeria-senegal-play-egypt-in-blockbuster-semifinals/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 21:37:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617842 The final four at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations have been decided, with the continent’s familiar powerhouses emerging from a gripping quarter-final round marked by intensity, late drama and decisive moments.

Egypt, Nigeria, Morocco and Senegal all booked their places in the semi-finals, bringing the last-eight stage to a close on Saturday night.

Hosts Morocco will lock horns with a star-studded Nigeria side, while Senegal — the first team to reach the semi-finals — are set for a heavyweight showdown against Egypt. Both matches will be played on Wednesday, January 21.

Seven-time champions Egypt clinched the final semi-final spot after edging defending champions Côte d’Ivoire 3-2 in a pulsating encounter, bringing the Elephants’ title defence to an end and setting up a mouthwatering clash with Senegal.

Senegal had earlier secured their place with a narrow but hard-earned 1-0 victory over Mali, as Iliman Ndiaye’s first-half strike proved enough to settle a tense West African derby.

Morocco remain firmly on track for a first AFCON crown in five decades after a composed 2-0 win over Cameroon in Rabat on Friday night. Goals from Brahim Diaz and Ismaël Saibari highlighted the Atlas Lions’ attacking flair and defensive solidity as they continued an impressive home campaign.

Nigeria completed the semi-final line-up with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Algeria in Marrakech. Victor Osimhen opened the scoring after a closely fought opening period before Akor Adams sealed the result late on, confirming the Super Eagles’ return to the last four and setting up a blockbuster encounter with the hosts.

Egypt hold off Ivory Coast in thriller to make Afcon 2025 semis https://www.adomonline.com/egypt-hold-off-ivory-coast-in-thriller-to-make-afcon-2025-semis/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 21:20:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617813 Egypt have ended Ivory Coast’s reign as Africa Cup of Nations champions after claiming a thrilling 3-2 win in the teams’ quarterfinal clash at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir on Saturday night.

The Pharaohs established 2-0 and 3-1 leads, but the Elephants struck back twice to ensure a tense battle right to the death, but ultimately the North Africans clung on to enhance their hopes of a record-extending eighth Afcon crown.

Egypt got off to an absolute flyer, claiming the lead in just the fourth minute. Omar Marmoush used his speed and aggression to beat Odilon Kossounou to Emam Ashour’s through ball, before striking a low shot beyond goalkeeper Yahia Fofana for 1-0.

Ivory Coast responded well to going behind, dialling up the pace and intensity of their play to put Egypt under pressure. Amad Diallo had a great chance to draw his team level in the 17th minute after great work from Yan Diomande, but his shot on goal was heroically blocked by a combination of Rami Rabia and Ahmed Fatouh.

Further half chances went the way of Yan Diomande and Evann Guessand, before the North Africans doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark: Mohamed Salah’s corner kick found the head of Rami Rabia, whose looping header arched beyond the reach of Fofana before dropping into the back of the net for 2-0.

Ivory Coast needed a response before the interval and they forced a goal in the 40th minute, with Diomande’s in-swinging free kick delivery flicked on by Kossounou before being bundled into his own net by the unfortunate Fatouh.

However, the North African giants restored a two-goal advantage just seven minutes into the second stanza, with Salah stabbing home at close range for 3-1 after a brilliant outside-of-the-foot assist from the left flank by Emam Ashour.

Ivory Coast pulled another goal back in the 73rd minute, with substitute Jean-Philippe Krasso’s header from a corner kick causing mayhem in the Egypt goalmouth, before Guela Doue poked home from close range to make it 3-2.

The Elephants laid siege to the Egypt box in the dying minutes in search of an equaliser, but they were left frustrated.

The Pharaohs will face Senegal in the first semifinal on Wednesday 14 January, set for the Tangier Grand Stadium.

The West Africans were firmly in control in the first half in Marrakech, with Adams spurning a glorious chance to open the scoring eight minutes before the break when he curled narrowly over the bar.

Osimhen broke the deadlock for the Super Eagles just 85 seconds into the second half, heading Bruno Onyemaechi’s deep cross from the left down and back across goal for his fourth goal at these finals.

Adams added the second 10 minutes later when he rounded Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane after being played in by Osimhen following a fine Nigeria move.

Sevilla forward Adams had a chance to make it 3-0 but headed against the left-hand upright from Osimhen’s cross with nine minutes remaining.

Nigeria, runners-up at the 2023 edition, will now face host nation Morocco in the last four in Rabat on Wednesday (20:00 GMT).

Mawuli Wayo strikes as Hearts of Oak snatch late win against Hohoe United https://www.adomonline.com/mawuli-wayo-strikes-as-hearts-of-oak-snatch-late-win-against-hohoe-united/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 18:35:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617799 Hearts of Oak edged past Hohoe United in a dramatic late finish to open the second round of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League.

The Phobians traveled to Hohoe Stadium on Saturday for the Matchday 18 clash, where both sides battled for control in a first half that ended goalless.

Substitutions after the break injected fresh energy, but the deadlock looked set to hold—until Mawuli Wayo struck deep into added time, securing a 1-0 victory for Hearts of Oak.

The win lifts Hearts of Oak to third place with 31 points, while Hohoe United remain 17th on the table with 18 points.

Next up, Hearts of Oak will host Dreams FC at the University of Ghana Stadium, while Hohoe United visit Young Apostles at Wenchi Stadium.

Elsewhere, Eleven Wonders claimed a crucial 2-0 victory over Basake Holy Stars on Friday. Striker Rauf Munah emerged as the hero, scoring twice shortly after halftime—first in the 48th minute and again four minutes later—guiding Wonders through their strongest period of the match.

Wonders will look to build on this momentum as they travel to face Heart of Lions, while Holy Stars, sitting 14th with 20 points, aim to bounce back against Bechem United.

Antoine Semenyo scores on his debut as Manchester City hammer Exeter FC https://www.adomonline.com/antoine-semenyo-scores-on-his-debut-as-manchester-city-hammer-exeter-fc/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 17:53:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617781 Ghana international Antoine Semenyo made an instant impact as he opened his Manchester City account in a thumping victory over lower-tier Exeter FC on Saturday afternoon.

Fresh from completing his move to the champions, Semenyo was handed a starting role for the FA Cup third-round tie at the Etihad Stadium and wasted little time announcing himself.

Teenage defender Max Alleyne, making only his second senior appearance, set City on their way with a close-range finish before Rodri unleashed a powerful strike to double the lead. The hosts went into the break four goals to the good, aided by own goals from Jake Doyle-Hayes and Jack Fitzwater.

Semenyo was heavily involved as his dangerous delivery forced Rico Lewis to score, before the January signing capped his debut with a composed finish after latching onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Rayan Cherki.

City’s dominance continued after the interval, with Tijjani Reijnders, Nico O’Reilly and academy winger Ryan McAidoo all getting on the scoresheet.

Exeter briefly found joy through a stunning consolation goal from George Birch, but Lewis restored City’s relentless momentum with a 10th goal to complete a memorable afternoon.

At 26, Semenyo becomes the first player since Sergio Agüero in 2011 to record both a goal and an assist on his Manchester City debut and was named the Man of the Match following his impressive performance.

The emphatic result marked the first time in nearly 40 years that City had scored double figures in a competitive match.

Semenyo has now taken his tally to 11 goals across all competitions this season and is expected to feature in City’s EFL Cup semifinal clash against Newcastle United on Tuesday night, before the champions travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Saturday.

Black Stars coach Otto Addo visits injured Mohammed Salisu after successful surgery https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-coach-otto-addo-visits-injured-mohammed-salisu-after-successful-surgery/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 16:15:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617778 Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has paid a visit to Ghana defender Mohammed Salisu in France as the centre-back continues his recovery from a serious knee injury.

The AS Monaco defender sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during a French Ligue 1 encounter against Olympique Lyonnais, an incident that has sidelined him for the rest of the season.

The setback is also expected to rule the 26-year-old out of contention for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Following a successful surgery, Addo met Salisu to offer encouragement and reassurance. The Black Stars coach used the opportunity to discuss Ghana’s World Cup ambitions while providing personal support as the defender begins the long road to recovery.

Prior to the injury, Salisu had established himself as a key figure in Monaco’s defence, delivering consistent performances in the absence of Soungoutou Magassa Mawissa and experienced campaigner Eric Dier. He featured in 12 matches across all competitions this season, contributing one goal.

Addo has recently adopted a proactive approach in maintaining close contact with his players, making similar visits to Abdul Mumin, Mohammed Kudus, Ernest Nuamah, and other Black Stars players recovering from various injuries.

The Black Stars coach is expected to announce his final World Cup squad on June 1.

2025 AFCON: Bryan Mbeumo ‘sad’ over Cameroon elimination https://www.adomonline.com/2025-afcon-bryan-mbeumo-sad-over-cameroon-elimination/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 16:01:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617774 Cameroon forward Bryan Mbeumo says their first-half performance let them down in their quarter-final defeat by hosts Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), leaving him “really sad” about the manner of his country’s exit from the tournament.

The Indomitable Lions went down 2-0 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Friday night, with Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari scoring the goals in front of a vibrant, partisan crowd.

Playing at his first Afcon since declaring for Cameroon in 2022, the 26-year-old, who was born in France, started all five games, failing to find the net but registering an assist for the winning goal in his team’s opening match against Gabon.

“We didn’t play our football and we saw in the second half that we were a much better team on the ball and we made them adapt a lot,” the Manchester United forward told BBC Sport Africa.

“They took their chances and congratulations to them.”

While Mbeumo had claims for a second-half penalty waved away, Cameroon head coach David Pagou agreed with his player’s assessment.

“It’s true that the players were a bit timid at the start of the match,” he said.

“In the second half we saw some improvement and the team came back into the game

“Overall, we are satisfied with this group, which gave a lot of emotions to the Cameroonian people. That was the objective.

“Unfortunately, Morocco stopped us in our tracks. We will go back calmly and continue our progression.”

Pagou was only appointed to lead Cameroon on the eve of the finals, stepping up from a more junior role after Belgian Marc Brys was sacked in controversial style by the Cameroonian Football Federation and its president Samuel Eto’o, who was in attendance in Rabat.

Cameroon left several senior players, including goalkeeper Andre Onana, out of the squad, preferring to bring a more youthful selection to Morocco.

Among those to impress was Bayer Leverkusen striker Christian Kofane, who made his international debut in the group match against Ivory Coast and scored goals against Mozambique and South Africa – having made his professional debut in Spain’s second tier only a year ago.

“We have such a good group, such a quality group – young as well, so that’s positive for the future,” said Mbeumo.

Diaz is Morocco’s ‘X-factor’

The hesitancy of some of Cameroon’s young players in the first half was likely influenced by the fiery atmosphere in the stadium.

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui said his side had “12 players” and had turned in potentially their best performance since their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

“Amazing” is how goalscorer Saibari described the environment created by the fans.

“They were supporting us from minute one to 95. I hope they still keep this vibe so we can work harder for them,” he added.

Morocco have reached their first Afcon semi-final since 2004 and are looking to claim only their second continental title, having last lifted the trophy 50 years ago.

“It has been a long time for Moroccan football and the Moroccan people,” said defender Romain Saiss, who has not played since picking up an injury in the opening match against Comoros.

“We wanted tonight to make history and to break this bad record.

“We’re happy with the game, the way we play, the desire, the intensity we put in the game. The mentality was amazing.”

The former Wolves man described Diaz as one of the team’s “technical leaders”, saying that when he is in good form it makes things “easier”.

The Real Madrid playmaker is the tournament’s top scorer, having bagged three goals in the group stage, the winner against Tanzania in the last 16 and another against Cameroon.

Regragui described him as Morocco’s best player and their “X factor”.

“If he scores (it) is very important for us, but what is important is you work for the team, you do what I want and you believe in what I want,” he said.

“He changed his mentality. I work a lot with him about this. He can be the best player (in) the world if he wants.”

Morocco’s semi-final opponents will be Algeria or Nigeria, who meet in Marrakesh at 16:00 GMT on Saturday.

Hearts of Oak board member urges players to improve performance https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-board-member-urges-players-to-improve-performance/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 11:32:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617735 Hearts of Oak board member Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has challenged the team to consistently deliver their best performances, highlighting the weight of responsibility that comes with wearing the club’s iconic Phobia badge.

Drawing on decades of experience in Ghanaian football, Dr Tamakloe reminded the squad that Hearts of Oak is not just a football club, but a historic institution that has endured since 1911.

He stressed that players must respect this legacy and actively contribute to preserving the club’s reputation.

Speaking candidly, he acknowledged that recent performances have not met the competitive intensity expected of the team.

“Performance is non-negotiable. History leaves no room for those who fail to deliver,” Dr. Tamakloe said.

He added that the club has produced legends and outlasted countless rivals, and the current squad must rise to match that tradition.

He urged the players to approach the second round of the Ghana Premier League with renewed focus, discipline, and teamwork.

“Once you are a disciplined player and you work hard under the guidance of your technical team and understand the importance of teamwork, you will surely succeed in making your mark as a player and bringing glory to the club,” he reiterated.

Dr Tamakloe concluded by reminding the team of the unwavering support from the Phobians.

“You have the support of all Phobians, so go out there and make us proud in your games,” he stressed.

Hearts of Oak, who sit 5th on the Premier League log, will next face Hohoe United in Matchday 18 at the Hohoe Sports Stadium.

Brahim Diaz equals Osei Kofi’s AFCON goalscoring record https://www.adomonline.com/brahim-diaz-equals-osei-kofis-afcon-goalscoring-record/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 09:32:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617723 Morocco forward Brahim Díaz has etched his name into Africa Cup of Nations history by scoring in his fifth consecutive match at the 2025 tournament, matching a record first set by Ghana legend Osei Kofi in 1968.

Díaz’s strike helped the Atlas Lions secure a 2-0 quarter-final victory over Cameroon on Friday, booking their place in the semifinals.

The Real Madrid attacker has been a constant threat throughout the tournament, opening his account in Morocco’s opening win against Comoros and adding goals against Mali and Zambia in the group stage.

He then netted the decisive goal in the round of 16 against Tanzania before scoring again against Cameroon.

By scoring in five straight games, Díaz joins Osei Kofi, one of Ghana’s standout players of the 1960s, who was renowned for his scoring exploits in multiple AFCON tournaments.

Kofi’s legacy includes finishing as the top scorer in the 1965 Africa Cup of Nations and cementing his status as one of the continent’s early football icons.

Morocco now await the winner of the Algeria-Nigeria quarter-final clash. Should Díaz find the net in the semifinals, he would become the first player in AFCON history to score in six consecutive matches within a single edition.

Black Stars coach Otto Addo visits injured Ernest Nuamah https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-coach-otto-addo-visits-injured-ernest-nuamah/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 09:20:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617720 Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has visited injured winger Ernest Nuamah in France as part of Ghana’s ongoing preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Olympique Lyonnais forward is recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury he suffered in April 2025 during a Ligue 1 match against Lille.

Nuamah has made significant strides in his rehabilitation in recent weeks and has begun gym-based training, with his return to full on-field activity expected soon.

Addo used the visit to encourage the highly rated attacker and discuss Ghana’s World Cup plans, reaffirming his importance to the national team as he works towards full fitness.

The Black Stars coach continues to keep close tabs on key players, especially those returning from injury, as Ghana intensifies preparations for the global tournament.

Despite the setback, Nuamah has already made a notable contribution to Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign, featuring in five matches and scoring twice.

Addo has previously made similar visits to other national team players, including Abdul Mumin and Mohammed Kudus, as part of his hands-on approach to squad management.

The Porcupine Warriors welcome Chelsea to the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday, January 11, in their Matchday 18 fixture, with Zito making it clear that history must not become a mental obstacle for his players.

Speaking to the club’s media ahead of the encounter, the Kotoko coach dismissed talk of past records and long winless runs, insisting that such narratives should not influence his team’s approach.

“The same thing was said when we were to play them, they said for 15 years this and that, this and that, but we were able to overcome that and then we won,” he told AKSC TV

With Chelsea now visiting Kumasi, Zito says his focus is firmly on victory.

“So now that they are coming to our place, there’s no two ways about it. We have to do everything possible to win this game. It’s very, very important to me,” Zito added.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 15:30 GMT.

Solskjaer set for face-to-face talks with Man Utd chiefs https://www.adomonline.com/solskjaer-set-for-face-to-face-talks-with-man-utd-chiefs/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 08:46:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617710 Manchester United’s appointment of a caretaker manager until the end of the season is reaching its conclusion, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer due to have face-to-face talks about a return to the club on Saturday.

It is understood former midfielder and ex-Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick, the other frontrunner for the role, has already met United chiefs.

United want an appointment before next weekend’s Manchester derby.

Club sources have said they regard both men as number one managers in their own right rather than as part of a team, even though the pair worked together following Jose Mourinho’s departure in 2018.

Norwegian Solskjaer was appointed in similar circumstances when Mourinho left the club and was given the role permanently in March 2019 after a successful run of results.

The former striker led the club to the Europa League final but was sacked in November 2021 after a poor run of form. He most recently managed Besiktas in Turkey but was sacked in August after losing in the play-offs for both the Europa and Conference League.

In the meantime, Darren Fletcher will continue in interim charge.

Fletcher’s focus solely on FA Cup tie

Speaking earlier on Friday, Fletcher said he has had no talks about his future and his focus has solely been on the FA Cup third round tie with Brighton.

Fletcher was put in temporary charge for two games following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

It has not been established whether Fletcher will remain as part of the first-team set-up or if he will return to his previous job as United’s under-18s coach.

The former United and Scotland midfielder confirmed he had not spoken to minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe since Amorim’s exit, and there have been no discussions either with chief executive Omar Berrada or director of football Jason Wilcox about what happens after the Brighton game.

“There have been no thoughts or conversations over my future,” he said.

“I speak to Omar and Jason, that’s how the process works.

“They have given me full responsibility to take control of these two games, to make my own decisions, to lead the team, guide the team and prepare the team. That’s what I’ve been doing.

“I’ve been focusing on the job at hand and preparing the team for these two games.”

Senior figures at Old Trafford are known to be impressed at the way Fletcher has gone about his work this week and how he has handled the external pressures of the role.

Fletcher defends Man Utd academy

For the first time, Fletcher addressed Amorim’s criticisms of United’s academy.

Aside from the fact he did not start any academy-produced player in a Premier League game this season, Amorim did not show any sign he had faith in the players it had produced.

In addition, he angered United officials by singling out Harry Amass – whose loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday has now come to an end – and striker Chido Obi for criticism.

Amorim also said he detected a sense of entitlement among United’s young players.

As someone who was himself developed by the club, has previously held the position of technical director and up to this week has been responsible for their under-18s players, Fletcher brought Kobbie Mainoo and Shea Lacey on at Turf Moor.

On only his second senior appearance, 18-year-old Lacey nearly won the game with a curling effort from 20 yards that came back off the crossbar.

“Historically, this club is built around the academy,” said Fletcher. “Our record speaks for itself.

“We’ve got some amazing talent and what I see is a lot of hardworking, humble young players, honest and coachable, who aren’t perfect because they’re young and they’re learning.

“We ask too much of young people in society at times. We have to let them learn – educate them, help them and understand they will make mistakes.

“With good guidance, all of us play a part in developing them to be Manchester United players. Hopefully they can showcase themselves like Shea did.”

Fifa criticised on World Cup tickets for disabled https://www.adomonline.com/fifa-criticised-on-world-cup-tickets-for-disabled/ Sat, 10 Jan 2026 08:42:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617706 Fifa’s failure to address concerns over access to tickets for disabled supporters at the 2026 World Cup is “unacceptable”, a charity has said.

Disabled fans face paying more to attend games as there are no tickets available to them in the lowest-priced tier of the general allocation.

Personal assistants have been told they will have to pay the full price of a ticket, rather than receive a free or concession rate. Fifa says it cannot guarantee that they will get a seat next to the disabled fan they have taken to the game.

There is also uncertainty over how many tickets will be made available to wheelchair users and the number of easy access spaces.

Level Playing Field says it “raised serious and legitimate concerns” with Fifa more than three weeks ago but has not received a response.

It has now written to national governing bodies and the secretary of state for culture, media and sport.

“This ongoing uncertainty over accessible ticketing is unacceptable,” said Tony Taylor, the chair of Level Playing Field.

“The current situation appears to expect disabled fans to gamble on cost and access.

“Planning, personal assistants and pricing are vital considerations for disabled fans, as repeatedly shown in Level Playing Field Annual Fan Survey data.

“Restricting access to the lowest pricing tiers and charging for personal assistants, add unavoidable, additional, disability-related costs to attending.

“Instead of addressing the issue and communicating with supporters effectively, the current response has only been to delay and ignore.”

Fifa has been approached for comment.

World football’s governing body has been heavily criticised for its high pricing structure at this summer’s event in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

It eventually bowed to pressure by releasing a small number of “more affordable” $60 (£45) tickets to general fans for all 104 matches. But there has been no such flexibility for disabled fans.

England supporters have not taken up their full general ticket allocation for the final and semi-final because of the cost. Around 90% of tickets for the final made available to the FA cost £3,094.

2025 AFCON: Morocco roar past Cameroon to book semi-final spot https://www.adomonline.com/2025-afcon-morocco-roar-past-cameroon-to-book-semi-final-spot/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 21:53:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617689 Hosts Morocco booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) with a dominant display against Cameroon in Rabat.

A goal in each half, scored by Brahim Diaz and Ismael Saibari, was enough to see off their opponents, who rarely threatened.

Diaz tucked home from close range in the 26th minute after Ayoub El Kaabi’s flick on from a corner, using his thigh to nudge the ball into the net for his fifth goal of the tournament.

Saibari’s goal also came from a set piece, firing home a low left-footed drive after picking up a loose ball from a free-kick.

Played in a febrile atmosphere reminiscent of those produced by North African fans at the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar, Walid Regragui’s side never looked in any real danger during an ill-tempered encounter.

Having now matched their historic run to the semi-finals in Qatar, Regragui’s side are two wins away from claiming the country’s first continental crown since 1976.

Morocco are now unbeaten in 25 matches – a run stretching back to their last-16 exit at the 2023 edition of the finals – and are into the last four at an Afcon for the first time since 2004, when they went on to lose against Tunisia in the final.

The Atlas Lions will have a huge home advantage again when they return to this stadium on Wednesday (20:00 GMT) to play the winners of Saturday’s quarter-final between Algeria and Nigeria (16:00 GMT).

The Teranga Lions won the closely-fought tie thanks to a first-half strike from Iliman Ndiaye, while the Eagles’ hopes of a comeback were compromised by a sending off for talismanic midfielder Yves Bissouma in injury time before the interval.

The teams cancelled each other out in the first quarter of the match, with Mali having the first notable effort on 24 minutes, as Nathan Gassama’s piledriver shot was bravely blocked by the Senegal defence.

The Teranga Lions then claimed the lead just three minutes later, with Iliman Ndiaye latching onto a rebound in the Mali penalty area before firing home a low shot for 1-0.

Pape Gueye nearly doubled the advantage just past the half-hour mark, but his effort flashed wide of the mark, while injury time saw El Hadji Malick Diouf spurn a great chance inside the Mali box.

The Eagles were then reduced to 10 men just before the halftime break when Yves Bissouma picked up his second yellow card and was sent off.

Senegal, with a numerical advantage, controlled the second half for the most part, though Mali nearly levelled the game on 57 minutes via Abdoulaye Diaby, but Edouard Mendy made a magnificent save to keep his side ahead.

That was to be the Eagles’ only real chance of getting back in the game, with Senegal missing out on chances to kill off the game via Sadio Mane and Pathe Ciss, but ultimately they were able to see out the match and claim a deserved victory.

Senegal will face either Egypt or Ivory Coast (who meet in Agadir on Saturday night) in the first semifinal, set for Tangier on Wednesday, 14 January.

My best football is yet to come, says new Man City signing Antoine Semenyo https://www.adomonline.com/my-best-football-is-yet-to-come-says-new-man-city-signing-antoine-semenyo/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 16:43:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617675 Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo believes his peak is still ahead as he prepares to make his mark at Manchester City.

The 25-year-old joined the Premier League champions on a five-and-a-half-year contract from AFC Bournemouth, following a string of standout performances in England’s top flight.

Despite interest from several leading European clubs, Semenyo chose City, drawn by the prospect of competing for major trophies under Pep Guardiola.

“My best football is yet to come, I am sure of that. And City are in a great position, still involved in four competitions. I really feel I can help them have a strong second half of the season.

“The Etihad is my new home. I can’t wait to play in front of the fans here, and I hope to show everyone what I can do,” he added.

Semenyo’s rise has been rapid. Since leaving Bristol City for Bournemouth in January 2023, he has made 110 appearances, quickly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most explosive forwards. This season alone, he has scored 10 league goals, highlighted by a brace against Liverpool and a stoppage-time winner against Tottenham.

The transfer also delivers a financial boost for Bristol City, who are set to receive 20% of the profit from the move, having sold Semenyo to Bournemouth for around £10 million.

At Manchester City, Semenyo is expected to add pace, power, and versatility across the frontline, while remaining a key figure for the Ghana national team. He has earned more than 30 caps for the Black Stars, including appearances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Semenyo, who will don the No.42 jersey, is poised to make his City debut against Exeter City in the FA Cup this Saturday at the Etihad Stadium.

Antoine Semenyo was on our top priority – Manchester City Director of Football https://www.adomonline.com/antoine-semenyo-was-on-our-top-priority-manchester-city-director-of-football/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 16:19:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617669 Manchester City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana, has confirmed that Antoine Semenyo was the club’s top target in the ongoing winter transfer window.

The Ghanaian forward has joined City from AFC Bournemouth on a five-and-a-half-year deal, reportedly worth £64 million.

“Antoine is a really exciting signing for the football club,” Viana said. “He made it clear to us immediately that it was City he wanted to join. His enthusiasm for this football club has been clear throughout the process.

“He has huge quality. Two great feet, pace, power, a habit of influencing games and, importantly, real room for growth and development. I am excited to see the player Antoine can become in the weeks, months and years ahead.

“We are constantly watching players all over the world. Antoine was the one we most wanted. He has shown he can perform in the Premier League. He is humble, hard-working, professional and totally focused on being a better footballer. He is ideal for us,” he added.

Semenyo has emerged as one of Bournemouth’s standout performers this season, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists in the Premier League.

During his time at the South Coast Club, the 25-year-old made 110 appearances, netting 32 goals and supplying 13 assists across all competitions.

Antoine Semenyo to make Manchester City debut against Exeter City https://www.adomonline.com/antoine-semenyo-to-make-manchester-city-debut-against-exeter-city/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 16:04:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617665 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that new signing Antoine Semenyo will be involved in Saturday’s FA Cup third-round clash against Exeter City at the Etihad Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Guardiola revealed the Ghanaian winger is fit and available as City look to secure passage into the next round of the world’s oldest cup competition.

However, the City boss stopped short of confirming whether Semenyo will start or begin the game on the bench.

“He’ll be selected,” said Guardiola. “I don’t know if he’ll start, but he’ll be selected for sure.”

Semenyo recently completed a £64 million move to the reigning Premier League champions from AFC Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old made a strong impression in his final outing for the Cherries, playing a key role in their thrilling 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur before sealing his transfer.

The deal includes an initial £62.5 million fee, with a further £1.5 million in performance-related add-ons.

Bournemouth have also secured a 10 per cent sell-on clause on any future profit from the winger’s sale.

Why Man City have signed ‘extraordinary’ Semenyo https://www.adomonline.com/why-man-city-have-signed-extraordinary-semenyo/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 15:54:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617661 From Bristol City to Manchester City in just three years – Antoine Semenyo’s rise to the top of the game has been swift.

Pep Guardiola’s side have completed the signing of the 26-year-old Bournemouth forward – after meeting his £65m release clause – beating the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Spurs and Chelsea to his signature.

It marks the latest step in a rapid rise for London-born Semenyo, who represents Ghana internationally through his father’s heritage.

He was rejected by Arsenal, Spurs and Millwall as a youngster before ending up in a West Country academy run by former Leeds and Forest Green manager Dave Hockaday.

Bristol City signed him in 2017, but he needed loan spells at Bath, Newport and Sunderland before breaking into the Robins’ first team in 2020-21.

In January 2023, he made a £10m move to Bournemouth – and he has been improving ever since.

But why Manchester City, and why now?

Why did Manchester City want Semenyo?

What it says about the state of the transfer market aside, £65m is a cut-price fee for a Premier League winger approaching the prime of his career.

So, it is no surprise that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City pushed hard for Semenyo now – even if his stats suggest he won’t be a huge improvement on the wide options they already have.

Semenyo has created fewer chances per 90 minutes this season than Rayan Cherki or Jeremy Doku, and his dribble success rate is only better than Savinho among the dedicated wings in the City squad.

But his end product catches the eye. Semenyo is the third top scorer in the league with 10 goals, plus he has three assists.

He has a shot accuracy of 55% this season, the second highest of anyone who has scored five or more in the Premier League, and his 22 goal involvements in the calendar year is the most in the Premier League by a Bournemouth player ever.

Plus, his style of play would offer a new dimension to a City side whose bid to catch Premier League leaders Arsenal has faltered with three consecutive draws.

Consummately two-footed, only Erling Haaland and Jean-Phillipe Mateta have attempted more shots than Semenyo this campaign (excluding blocked shots), while his total of 76 attempted dribbles is the fourth-highest total in the top flight.

“He can drive forward with the ball vertically, rather than Doku who comes in and out,” former England goalkeeper Rob Green told BBC 5 Live.

“He can do that something different Pep is looking for. Short term they have their own injury problems, so he can help short term and long term.

“It does raise the question what future someone like Savinho has though.”

The Afcon issue is no problem for Semenyo, with Ghana having surprisingly failed to qualify.

And Guardiola was already confirmed as a fan of him earlier this season, before the transfer talk intensified.

“He’s an extraordinary, extraordinary, extraordinary player,” the Spaniard insisted.

“His energy, his confidence, his movement – unbelievable. He doesn’t stop running, he attacks space so well, and when he has the ball, you feel something will happen.

“He’s improving every game. Players like him make this league special – always hungry, always brave.”

Semenyo’s output backs up the bombast. Only City striker Erling Haaland and Brentford forward Igor Thiago have been involved in more Premier League goals this season.

“He’s a brilliant, brilliant player,” former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given told BBC Match of the Day. “At 25, he is in the peak of his career as well.”

I am excited and I am looking forward for the challenge – Semenyo after joining Manchester City https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-excited-and-i-am-looking-forward-for-the-challenge-semenyo-after-joining-manchester-city/ Fri, 09 Jan 2026 15:48:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2617658 Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has expressed his delight after completing a high-profile move to Manchester City during the winter transfer window.

Pep Guardiola’s side splashed out £64 million to secure the services of the 25-year-old, who has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season.

Semenyo has already notched 10 league goals, underlining his growing influence and consistency at the top level.

The two-footed winger’s rise has been steady rather than sudden. From Bristol City to Bournemouth, the Ghana international has worked his way up the English football ladder and now earns the opportunity to compete for the biggest honours in European football.

Speaking in his first interview as a City player, Semenyo admitted the magnitude of the move is still sinking in.

“It’s only sinking in now to be honest,” he began.

“I’ve had to work very hard to get to this point. I’m over the moon that it’s done and looking forward to the challenge.

“I’m so excited. I’m looking forward to meeting the boys, just competing at the highest level and hopefully winning all four competitions.

“I’m looking forward to it, and I can’t wait for the challenge,” he added.

City will pay an initial £62.5 million, with a further £1.5 million in performance-related add-ons. Bournemouth have also negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause on any future profit from the player.

Semenyo had drawn interest from Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur but ultimately chose the Etihad Stadium as the next step in his career.

He is available for immediate selection and could make his debut in next Tuesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg tie against Newcastle United.
