In their first game since losing the Carabao Cup final, Mikel Arteta’s team put in another tame performance as Saints sensed and took their opportunity with goals from Ross Stewart and substitute Shea Charles.

Viktor Gyokeres did draw Arsenal level on 68 minutes but Saints stood strong and hit the Gunners with a counter-punch courtesy of Charles’ expert finish with five minutes to play.

Southampton can look forward to a Wembley semi-final against Man City, Chelsea or West Ham or Leeds, who play on Sunday.

The Championship play-off hopefuls are now dreaming of replicating the Southampton side that won the FA Cup in 1976.

Arteta’s injury-disrupted Gunners arrived at St Mary’s as overwhelming favourites a fortnight on from their final defeat to City.

Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were missing from the squad having pulled out of international duty with England, but William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke, all of whom had injury concerns ahead of the game, were in the squad, with Gabriel playing from the start along with teen sensation Max Dowman.

Saints set their stall out early with the magnificent Leo Scienza causing mayhem on the break without finding the final finish.

The returning Martin Odegaard was denied from 20 yards by Daniel Peretz and then scuffed an effort wide, with Dowman and Kai Havertz next to have chances as the Gunners started to click into gear. But the opening goal didn’t go their way.

Ben White misjudged a long ball and Stewart brought down before rifling home.

The 35th-minute goal sparked bedlam around St Mary’s and stunned Arsenal, who offered precious little by way of response before the break.

Southampton went closer again after the interval, with Scienza cutting on to his right just inside the box and bending a wonderful effort that struck the crossbar.

Arteta had made a triple change just before that and one of those introduced levelled in the 68th minute. Gabriel slipped through Havertz, who took a touch before pulling back for Gyokeres to level with a sharp finish.

Arsenal were then forced into a change as Gabriel limped off to be replaced by Saliba.

With Arsenal allowing the game to drift, Saints managed to squeeze the ball forward to Charles in the 85th minute and the substitute strucka famous winner.

The Gunners are currently nine points clear at the top of the Premier League over Manchester City. It’s very much in their hands.

However, with so many players out of form and injuries mounting again, does this leave Arsenal vulnerable to the City charge? It’s Sporting Lisbon next up in midweek in the Champions League.

Late Lewandowski goal helps Barca beat 10-man Atleti to move seven points clear https://www.adomonline.com/late-lewandowski-goal-helps-barca-beat-10-man-atleti-to-move-seven-points-clear/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 22:00:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647941 Barcelona opened up a seven-point lead at the top of La Liga as Robert Lewandowski’s late strike ensured they came from behind to beat ten-man Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the Spanish capital.

There were chances at both ends in the opening exchanges as Fermin Lopez had one effort saved and missed another for the visitors, a trick repeated by Antoine Griezmann at the other end.

Lamine Yamal then hit the woodwork after being played in by Dani Olmo and that miss proved costly when Giuliano Simeone handed the hosts the lead before half-time as he ran onto a long ball and clinically converted past Joan Garcia.

The one-goal advantage did not last long though, with Marcus Rashford equalising within minutes as he played a delightful one-two with Olmo before thrashing through Juan Musso.

To make matters worse, Atleti were reduced to ten men deep into first-half injury-time as Nico Gonzalez, booked earlier in the half, received a straight red for a cynical tackle on Yamal that denied a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The game continued to be fiery after the break, with Gerard Martin getting a reprieve for a nasty tackle on Thiago Almada, as VAR got involved to downgrade his sending off to a yellow.

With the man advantage, Barca started to turn up the heat, only for Juan Musso to make two splendid stops from Ferran Torres.

But they did finally find the second with minutes left when Joao Cancelo’s saved shot rebounded towards Lewandowski, who used his shoulder to bundle home.

Ghana Premier League players lack quality to play for Black Stars – Nii Lante Vanderpuye https://www.adomonline.com/ghana-premier-league-players-lack-quality-to-play-for-black-stars-nii-lante-vanderpuye/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 19:08:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647938 Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has cast doubt on the readiness of locally based players to earn places in Black Stars, insisting the current standard falls short of what is required at the highest level.

His remarks come at a time when debate continues to grow over the inclusion of home-based talent in the Ghana national football team, despite the long-standing reliance on players plying their trade abroad.

Speaking on Citi FM, the former Odododiodio MP pointed to what he described as a significant quality gap within the domestic league.

He singled out Benjamin Asare—widely considered one of the standout performers in the Ghana Premier League—arguing that even the goalkeeper struggles to meet international standards.

Vanderpuye referenced Ghana’s recent 2-1 friendly loss to Germany as evidence, citing costly errors during the match.

“When I hear calls to include local players, I sometimes laugh. How is it possible? They play like colts players,” he said.

“Who are these local players? The standard is poor. Name three who are good enough to start. Even Benjamin Asare is a problem.

“He may be the best goalkeeper in the country, but he lacks many things. Against Germany, he came out twice, and both situations were disasters,” he added.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May and June for preparatory matches against Mexico and Wales ahead of the announcement of Ghana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 1.

Chelsea thrash Port Vale to reach Wembley semi-final https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-thrash-port-vale-to-reach-wembley-semi-final/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 18:55:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647934 Chelsea cruised into the FA Cup semi-finals as Port Vale’s storybook run was ended in ruthless fashion at Stamford Bridge.

Port Vale sit bottom of League One, 15 points from safety, but they reached the FA Cup last eight for the first time in 72 years by knocking out Premier League Sunderland.

This, however, was a brutal conclusion to their excellent campaign in the competition as Chelsea’s multi-million-pound side ran riot against a team who started with eight free transfers and two loan players.

Chelsea ensured the notion of another giant-killing was extinguished swiftly, starting with a goal after 64 seconds when Jorrel Hato poked home from close range after Vale failed to clear a corner.

Vale, roared on by 6,000 raucous fans in the Shed End, initially responded well to that early shock, but the contest was effectively over in the 25th minute when Joao Pedro turned Kyle John in the area before beating keeper Joe Gauci.

Chelsea increased their lead three minutes before the break when Gauci pushed out Malo Gusto’s cross and Cole Palmer’s follow-up attempt went in off Jordan Lawrence-Gabriel.

It was then a question of damage limitation for Jon Brady’s side, but that was beyond them too, as Tosin Adarabioyo headed Chelsea’s fourth after 57 minutes from Malo Gusto’s cross.

As Vale lost heart and hope, Andrey Santos added Chelsea’s fifth with a far-post header from Estevao Willian’s corner.

Estevao then got on the scoresheet himself eight minutes from time when he scored after Alejandro Garnacho hit the post, the goal being awarded after a lengthy video assistant referee check for offside.

Garnacho completed the rout from the penalty spot in stoppage time.

Chelsea’s emphatic win was significant for head coach Liam Rosenior who can now prepare for a Wembley appearance after a run of four damaging defeats.

This game also followed the decision to impose a two-match suspension on Enzo Fernandez after the midfielder publicly questioned whether he would be at the club next season.

Ex-Chelsea player Oscar retires with heart issue https://www.adomonline.com/ex-chelsea-player-oscar-retires-with-heart-issue/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 18:49:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647929 Former Chelsea and Brazil midfielder Oscar has retired after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

The 34-year-old was treated in hospital in November after he became unwell during physical testing at Brazilian club Sao Paulo’s training centre.

It was determined he had experienced a case of vasovagal syncope, which is a common type of fainting caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate.

Oscar, who won 48 caps for his country, has now cancelled his Sao Paulo contract, which had two years left to run.

“I wanted to do more for Sao Paulo, I wanted to play more. I think I had both the footballing ability and the age to play more, but unfortunately this happened,” Oscar said in an announcement posted on social media.

“Now I’m going to retire and continue supporting Sao Paulo, continuing my life as a fan. I’m ending my career here at Sao Paulo, a career that has taken me to many places, practically all over the world.

“I’d like to thank everyone for their constant support, all the Sao Paulo fans who have backed me since my return and during this difficult time I’m going through.”

Oscar signed for Chelsea in July 2012, winning the Europa League in his first season and a Premier League and League Cup double in 2014-15.

He departed for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port in January 2017, having scored 38 goals in 203 games, leaving a Chelsea squad that went on to seal another Premier League title in May.

He won three Chinese Super League titles with Shanghai Port, before returning to Sao Paulo, the club where he started his career, on a three-year deal in January 2025.

Real Madrid beaten by Mallorca as Muriqi hits late winner https://www.adomonline.com/real-madrid-beaten-by-mallorca-as-muriqi-hits-late-winner/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 18:45:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647926 Real Madrid suffered a major blow to their La Liga title hopes as Vedat Muriqi’s late winner for Mallorca kept Alvaro Arbeloa’s side four points behind Barcelona.

Hosts Mallorca went ahead four minutes before half-time when Manu Morlanes met a cross from the right delivered by Pablo Maffeo, took a touch to compose himself, and slotted into the bottom right corner.

Real thought they had salvaged a point in the 88th minute when Eder Militao heading in superbly from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner.

However, Muriqi had other ideas and struck his 19th league goal of the season in the first minute of stoppage time to give the hosts a superb win.

The result means Real failed to narrow the gap to Barcelona at the top, while Mallorca moved two points clear of the relegation zone.

Real could fall further behind in the title race when Barcelona face Atletico Madrid later on Saturday (20:00 BST).

Arbeloa’s visitors had several chances before Mallorca took the lead, but home goalkeeper Leo Roman was in fine form.

Kylian Mbappe raced past two Mallorca defenders and swung a shot towards goal but Roman’s outstretched leg denied him.

The France captain was thwarted once more when Roman pushed his curled effort behind when it was headed into the far corner.

Arda Guler’s low driven shot was well saved by Roman as Los Blancos continued to be frustrated.

At the other end, Morlanes headed over from six yards but made up for his miss by putting Mallorca ahead.

The late drama left the visitors dejected, with a first defeat by Mallorca since February 2023 putting a major dent in Real’s chances of La Liga glory.

Real will hope to return to winning ways when they host Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday (20:00 BST).

Bayern grab 99th-minute winner to cap superb fightback https://www.adomonline.com/bayern-grab-99th-minute-winner-to-cap-superb-fightback/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 18:39:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647868 Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich, without injured striker Harry Kane, fought back from two goals down to clinch an incredible victory over Freiburg thanks to Lennart Karl’s 99th-minute winner.

England captain Kane was ruled out with the ankle problem that meant he missed the Three Lions’ 1-0 defeat by Japan at Wembley on Tuesday.

Manager Vincent Kompany is remaining “positive” the former Tottenham forward could feature in the first leg of Bayern’s Champions League quarter-final at Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Without him, Bayern looked on course to suffer only their second league defeat of the season as they trailed 2-0 in the 81st minute after goals from Johan Manzambi and Lucas Holer.

But 20-year-old Tom Bischof scored twice with fine strikes from outside the penalty area, including a 92nd-minute equaliser, to make it 2-2.

Karl, 18, capped the superb fightback when he was left free at the back post to convert from Alphonso Davies’ low cross to give Bayern victory.

That goal was the 100th Bayern have scored in the Bundesliga this season, from only 28 matches.

Freiburg had earlier forced Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who turned 40 last week, into a stunning reflex save to keep out Philipp Lienhart’s diving header, though it was then judged offside so would not have counted any way.

There was nothing Neuer could do about Manzambi’s stunning 25-yard strike in the first minute of the second half.

Freiburg doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Holer scored after Neuer palmed a corner into his path.

But Bayern fought back in style with three goals late on for a fantastic victory.

Salim Adams scores late as Medeama snatch late point against Bechem United https://www.adomonline.com/salim-adams-scores-late-as-medeama-snatch-late-point-against-bechem-united/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 18:15:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647958 Midfielder Salim Adams converted a late penalty to secure a hard-earned 1-1 draw for Medeama SC against Bechem United in an absorbing Ghana Premier League clash at Nana Gyeabour Park on Saturday.

Medeama dominated possession for long stretches and fashioned the clearer opportunities, but it was the home side that struck first.

Veteran forward Augustine Okrah finished off a swift counter-attack in the 69th minute, meeting a precise cross from Yaw Annor with a clinical touch to give Bechem United the lead. His celebrations were short-lived, however, as he was booked for removing his shirt.

The visitors had already shown their attacking intent before falling behind. Adams came close with a trademark free-kick that forced a sharp save from goalkeeper Emmanuel Anning, while Kingsley Braye saw a goal-bound effort dramatically cleared off the line during a quick break.

Medeama’s persistence eventually paid off in the closing stages. A foul on Prince Owusu inside the box handed the visitors a lifeline, and Adams kept his composure to slot home from the spot and restore parity.

The result lifts Bechem United to seventh on the table with 37 points, though they remain 13 points adrift of the leaders as the campaign approaches its decisive phase.

Bechem United will next take on Hohoe United, while Medeama turn their attention to a high-profile home clash against Asante Kotoko on Matchday 29.

Exclusive: Sudan FA willing to release Kwesi Appiah for Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign https://www.adomonline.com/exclusive-sudan-fa-willing-to-release-kwesi-appiah-for-ghanas-2026-world-cup-campaign/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 13:55:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647391 The Sudan Football Association (SFA) is prepared to allow Kwesi Appiah to take charge of Ghana’s national team for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, Adom FM and Asempa FM Sports can exclusively reveal.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is currently searching for a new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a disappointing run of results.

The 50-year-old German tactician was relieved of his duties after the Black Stars suffered heavy defeats in recent pre-World Cup friendlies, including a 5-1 thrashing by Austria in Vienna and a 2-1 loss to Germany in Stuttgart.

With less than three months to the start of the tournament in North America, the GFA is expected to name a replacement soon.

Adom FM and Asempa FM Sports can reveal that Sudan would not stand in Appiah’s way if Ghana makes a formal approach, despite no official contact having been established so far.

Should Kwesi Appiah agree to lead the Black Stars, the Ghana FA would take responsibility for Appiah’s salary during the tournament, with an agreement for him to resume his role as head coach of Sudan’s national team, the Falcons of Jediane, after the World Cup.

Appiah, who made history by becoming the first Ghanaian coach to qualify the Black Stars for the World Cup in 2014, remains a respected figure within Ghanaian football, having previously handled the national team in two separate spells.

Meanwhile, the GFA is also said to be considering other high-profile candidates, with Pitso Mosimane, Tom Saintfiet, and Hervé Renard all reportedly expressing interest in the vacant position.

Preparations for the World Cup will intensify in the coming weeks, with the Black Stars scheduled to regroup in May. They will face Mexico in a preparatory fixture before concluding their warm-up campaign against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the global showpiece, have been drawn in Group L. They will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23, and wrapping up their group stage matches against Croatia on June 27.

After suffering group-stage exits in both the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, the Black Stars will be aiming for a stronger showing at the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Joachim Löw denies holding talks with Ghana FA to replace Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/joachim-low-denies-holding-talks-with-ghana-fa-to-replace-otto-addo/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 13:55:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647618 Former Germany head coach Joachim Löw has dismissed reports linking him to the vacant Ghana national team job, insisting he has not held any discussions with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over a possible appointment ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The GFA is currently in search of a new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo on Monday.

The decision came in the wake of disappointing back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international break, results that intensified scrutiny on the Black Stars’ preparations.

Despite growing speculation suggesting that the 2014 World Cup-winning coach had been contacted, Löw was quick to shut down the rumours. Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, he stated: “No one from Ghana has officially spoken to me.”

Since leaving his role as Germany’s head coach after UEFA Euro 2021, Löw has remained out of management, turning down several coaching opportunities.

Meanwhile, the search for Addo’s successor continues, with several high-profile names reportedly under consideration, including Kwesi Appiah, Walid Regragui, Pitso Mosimane, Tom Saintfiet, and Hervé Renard.

Ghana are expected to resume preparations for the World Cup with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales in May and June.

The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L and will face Panama, England, and Croatia when the tournament begins on June 11 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Haaland scores hat-trick as Man City dismantle Liverpool in FA Cup https://www.adomonline.com/haaland-scores-hat-trick-as-man-city-dismantle-liverpool-in-fa-cup/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 13:54:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647816 Erling Haaland’s 18-minute hat trick powered Manchester City to a 4-0 win over Liverpool and into the FA Cup semifinals for a record eighth straight season on Saturday.

Mohamed Salah’s failure from the penalty spot added to the woes of Liverpool, whose meltdown at Etihad Stadium will put more heat on under-pressure manager Arne Slot.

Haaland converted a penalty in the 39th minute, headed home a cross from Antoine Semenyo in first-half stoppage time, and then swept in a finish off the crossbar in the 57th to score his first hat trick of the season for City and 12th since he joined the club in 2022.

Semenyo scored the other goal in the 50th for City, which was playing its first match since winning the English League Cup two weeks ago by beating Arsenal in the final at Wembley Stadium. City will be heading back there later this month for the FA Cup semis.

Salah, who announced during the recent international break that he’d be leaving Liverpool after nine trophy-filled seasons, was beginning his long goodbye to the Reds but couldn’t mark it with a goal. The best of the many chances he spurned came from a penalty, which City goalkeeper James Trafford palmed away in the 64th.

It was a record 18th straight home win for City in the FA Cup, dating to 2017. Pep Guardiola’s team shared a record with Clapham Rovers for reaching seven consecutive FA Cup finals, but now holds it outright.

We are ready to face Samartex – Interim Kotoko coach Prince Yaw Owusu https://www.adomonline.com/we-are-ready-to-face-samartex-interim-kotoko-coach-prince-yaw-owusu/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 10:38:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647810 Interim Asante Kotoko coach Prince Yaw Owusu has expressed confidence in his side’s readiness ahead of their Ghana Premier League showdown with FC Samartex.

The Porcupine Warriors will welcome Samartex to the Baba Yara Stadium on Monday, April 6, in a Matchday 28 fixture.

Kotoko approach the encounter on the back of an inconsistent run, having registered two wins, two draws, and one defeat in their last five outings.

Despite that patchy form, Owusu remains optimistic about his side’s chances, pointing to their determination and resilience as key strengths.

Speaking to the club’s media, Owusu highlighted his team’s fighting spirit, insisting they are not intimidated by the challenge ahead. He stressed that while Kotoko respect Samartex’s capabilities, the feeling is mutual.

“Yeah. We also have the same thing as well. If you watch our games get to the end, the fight that we put in since we started the league, it’s been that way for us,” he said.

The interim coach added that his players are prepared to compete both physically and tactically, underlining their readiness for what is expected to be a keenly contested encounter.

“So we are not scared of that issue. But you know, it’s a match that we respect them as a team, and I know they respect us as well,” he added.

Samartex, meanwhile, travel to Kumasi in search of a turnaround in fortunes after a difficult spell marked by draws and defeats. They will be hoping to rediscover form against one of the league’s traditional heavyweights.

Kick-off is set for 15:00 GMT.

I think Black Stars will do well at 2026 World Cup – Fred Pappoe https://www.adomonline.com/i-think-black-stars-will-do-well-at-2026-world-cup-fred-pappoe/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 10:16:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647806 Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to deliver a strong performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite recent setbacks.

Ghana endured a difficult March international window, suffering consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany—results that have seen the team slip to 74th in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola rankings.

The drop leaves the Black Stars among the lower-ranked sides heading into the global showpiece.

However, speaking to Citi Sports, Pappoe struck an optimistic tone, insisting the team has the quality to recover and compete effectively on the biggest stage.

“I think we’ll do well. I’m sure this is just a spot on the way. I’m sure we’ll get over it, get a new coach in place,” he said.

Pappoe emphasized the importance of mentality and technical direction, noting that Ghana possesses a talented pool of players capable of rising to the occasion.

“Once we have the players with the right calibre of mind, the right mentality and the right approach, I’m not one who looks down on my team. I’m very hopeful with the array of players we have. I do not have an idea as to what is going to be the final 26.

“But at the end of the day, if you’re looking at who could possibly be in the 26, it gives me comfort. I don’t think our team is necessarily bad. I do not subscribe to that,” Pappoe added.

The recent poor results prompted the Ghana Football Association to part ways with head coach Otto Addo, with a replacement expected to be appointed ahead of the tournament.

The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico, before concluding their preparations with another test against Wales on June 2.

Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance at the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Drawn in Group L, the Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Guardiola wants Rodri to stay but says unhappy stars can go https://www.adomonline.com/guardiola-wants-rodri-to-stay-but-says-unhappy-stars-can-go/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 09:46:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647802 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says unhappy players can leave the club, but he hopes midfielder Rodri will stay.

During the international break, ex-Atletico Madrid player Rodri said he would consider joining their city rivals Real as “you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world”.

The 29-year-old Spain captain has made 293 appearances for City since joining in 2019 and will be out of contract next summer.

“There is not one player that will turn [down] the chance to play for [Real] Madrid,” said Guardiola.

“Always my wish is that Rodri could stay as long as possible in this club because he is an incredible, top player but the life of everyone is everyone’s.”

Rodri won the Ballon d’Or in 2024 but missed almost the entirety of last season after sustaining a knee injury and City failed to win a major trophy for the first time in eight years.

He has missed large chunks of this campaign because of a hamstring issue but has played 28 games in all competitions, helping the side to win the Carabao Cup against Arsenal at Wembley.

During his time at City, Rodri has won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and three League Cups.

Rodri previously said to Spanish media: “There have been many players who’ve gone down that path [playing for Atletico and Real].

“Not immediately, but over time. For me, you can’t turn down the best clubs in the world.”

Guardiola said Rodri has shown over time “how attached, how close he is” to City and his “contribution has been massive”.

The manager confirmed he would “absolutely” not stand in the midfielder’s way if he wanted to leave, adding: “The organisation of the club is above all of us – if one player is not happy they have to leave and [we] continue the same always if they are happy – and I think he is happy.

“If he is not happy just knock on the door of the sporting director, accept an offer according to his incredible quality and after that he doesn’t belong to the club – only himself.

“I know what the club wants. They informed me what they want from Rodri – it is to stay, stay, stay. I always had the positive [feeling] with that but at the end I don’t know.”

Senegal-Morocco friendship put to test by Africa Cup of Nations title turmoil https://www.adomonline.com/senegal-morocco-friendship-put-to-test-by-africa-cup-of-nations-title-turmoil/ Sat, 04 Apr 2026 08:50:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647813 Dakar and Rabat have longstanding ties, but relations have been strained since the Africa Cup of Nations final, which Senegal won in mid-January before being stripped of the title, which was transferred to Morocco.

Now the Afcon trophy is something of a thorn in the two countries’ sides.

On Rue Mohamed V, the street where Moroccan vendors are based in the Senegalese capital, a police van is parked.

“The police have been on high alert since the Confederation of African Football (Caf) decided to award the title to Morocco, but there have been no incidents,” a local resident told AFP.

Caf stripped Senegal of its title on March 17, over the team’s angry departure from the pitch after a penalty was awarded to Morocco late in second-half stoppage time.

In a photo the following day, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye was seen in his office with the trophy behind him.

Senegal has lodged an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) over the matter and some fans have meanwhile called for a boycott of Moroccan goods.

On March 18, Dakar called for an international investigation into “allegations of corruption within the Caf leadership” in a statement that sent a chill through Morocco.

“An official (Senegalese) document mentioned corruption. It insinuates that Morocco is the corrupting influence without, of course, any evidence and this could have repercussions,” Morocco’s Aziz Daouda, a track and field official and former athlete, told AFP.

He added that “comments made by certain Senegalese football officials are damaging relations” between the two countries, referring to allegations that Morocco controls Caf.

‘HOSTAGES’ OF MOROCCO

One of Senegal’s points of contention is the detention of 18 Senegalese football fans in Morocco for more than two months now.

They were sentenced on February 19 to prison terms ranging from three months to a year for hooliganism.

Minutes before the end of the match, some Senegalese supporters attempted to storm the pitch while Senegal’s players halted the game for nearly 20 minutes in protest of the late penalty to Morocco.

The appeal hearing for the 18 fans was postponed for a second time on Monday until April 13.

Dozens of demonstrators in Dakar called for their release at the end of February, describing them as “hostages” of Morocco.

“One gets the impression that this affair goes beyond the realm of sport and that is regrettable. For two countries that claim to be friends, such as Morocco and Senegal, things should not have come to this,” Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said in late February, lamenting the supporters’ convictions.

That said, Morocco’s relationship with Senegal is “unique, specific and extraordinary”, Senegal’s Director of Religious Affairs Djim Ousmane Drame said in a recent article.

“Morocco has always been the only (African) country with which diplomatic relations with Senegal are based on an emotional bond and popular appeal, beyond the institutions and bilateral ties,” Bakary Sambe of the Timbuktu Institute think tank told AFP.

Fez, for example, is a favourite destination for many Senegalese Muslim followers of Tidianism, an influential brotherhood in Senegal whose founder, Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane, is buried there.

Moroccan authorities, meanwhile, made no comment and “preferred not to get involved in this football affair” following the Caf decision, Daouda said.

BUSINESS, DIPLOMACY PARTNERS

In late January in Rabat, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch spoke of a “natural, lasting” relationship with Senegal where he said Morocco has invested more than $540 million.

Many Moroccan companies operate in Senegal, particularly in the food, pharmaceutical, energy, construction, mining, banking and insurance sectors.

On the international stage, the two countries’ diplomatic views are generally aligned.

Senegalese nationals constitute the largest group of foreign residents in the kingdom (18.4 per cent), according to official figures, and a robust student exchange also exists between the two countries.

“There are many of us on both sides trying to calm down all those hotheads from both camps who enjoy spreading irresponsible claims, lots of ‘fake news’ and plenty of insults,” Daouda said.

Former Senegalese foreign minister Cheikh Tidiane Gadio wrote in early February that “a hundred minutes of football will never be able to ruin a thousand years of close ties between Senegal and Morocco”.

Sacking Otto Addo was the right decision – Fred Pappoe https://www.adomonline.com/sacking-otto-addo-was-the-right-decision-fred-pappoe/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 12:42:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647609 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Fred Pappoe has endorsed the federation’s decision to part ways with head coach Otto Addo, just 72 days before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The GFA confirmed Addo’s dismissal on March 31, following a poor run of results during the most recent international window. The Black Stars suffered heavy back-to-back defeats, including a 5-1 loss to Austria and a 2-1 defeat to Germany, extending their losing streak to four matches.

The decision also comes in the wake of Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking the nation’s first absence from the tournament in 20 years and deepening concerns over the team’s trajectory.

Reacting to the development, Pappoe described the move as justified, pointing to a decline in performances and a lack of clear tactical direction.

“We’ve all been seeing the performance of the team, and I’m sure they looked at the recent performances and the way things are going, and I want to believe they took a good decision,” he told Joy Sports.

He stressed the urgency of appointing a new coach swiftly to stabilise preparations ahead of the global showpiece.

“The important thing is that they must quickly try to get a replacement to settle in and make sure the team gets ready for the World Cup,” Pappoe added.

GFA President Kurt Okraku has indicated that a replacement will be announced within 14 days, as the federation accelerates its search ahead of upcoming preparatory fixtures against Mexico and Wales.

GFA hints at review of Black Stars technical team after Otto Addo’s exit https://www.adomonline.com/gfa-hints-at-review-of-black-stars-technical-team-after-otto-addos-exit/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 11:44:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647598 The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has declined to give a definitive position on the future of the Black Stars’ expanded technical team following the departure of former head coach Otto Addo.

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the GFA strengthened the national team’s backroom staff by adding five more members, bringing the total technical personnel to 19.

The restructuring was intended to provide broader support and expertise as Ghana prepares for the global showpiece.

However, Otto Addo’s exit has raised fresh uncertainty about whether the enlarged technical setup will remain intact under the incoming head coach.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Okraku indicated that discussions are ongoing and a final decision has not yet been made.

“I can’t answer for this moment,” he said when asked whether the technical staff would all retain their positions.

“But what I know is that I am leading the charge, engaging all key stakeholders, just to make sure that we have a technical team that will take us to where we desire and where we want to go,” Okraku added.

With the head coach position now vacant, the GFA is expected to appoint a new leader in the coming weeks as preparations for the World Cup intensify.

The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May and June for international friendlies against Mexico and Wales, fixtures that will serve as key tests ahead of the tournament.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia when the competition kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Former Brong Afaho RFA chief criticises GFA’s Black Stars coaching decisions https://www.adomonline.com/former-brong-afaho-rfa-chief-criticises-gfas-black-stars-coaching-decisions/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 11:24:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647594 Former Brong Ahafo Football Association Chairman Ralph Gyambrah questions the decision-making process behind the appointment of coaches for the Black Stars.

His comments come following the departure of Otto Addo as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team after defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.

In the last six years, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has hired and fired four Black Stars coaches, with Otto Addo serving two stints with the national senior team.

Speaking to Connect FM, Gyambrah criticised the GFA’s recent approach to coaching appointments, describing the process as poorly planned and lacking the strategic direction needed for long-term success.

“When decisions are being taken to hire a coach for the Black Stars, the decision must be thought through so that you minimise chances of failure—but we did not do it that way,” he stated.

A new coach is expected to be confirmed in two weeks, according to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kurt Okraku.

Otto Addo, who had a previous stint with the national team, was re-hired to bring stability and rebuild confidence, but results and performances appear to have fallen short of expectations.

As the GFA begins the search for a new head coach, the former FA chairman’s comments serve as both a critique and a caution, as the next appointment could shape the future of the Black Stars.

Ghana is set to make their fifth World Cup appearance, having been placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

Hohoe United await GFA response after announcing league withdrawal https://www.adomonline.com/hohoe-united-await-gfa-response-after-announcing-league-withdrawal/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 11:08:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647586 Hohoe United’s Administrative Manager, Yussif Alhassan Uthman, has confirmed that the club has officially informed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of its decision to withdraw from the ongoing league season.

The Kpando-based side says its move is rooted in concerns over what it describes as systemic unfairness in the competition.

According to Yussif Uthman, the club has already submitted its position to the FA but is yet to receive any formal response.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, he noted that communication had been completed, though feedback from the governing body is still pending.

“We have officially communicated to the Ghana Football Association, but have yet to receive any response from them,” he said.

He further revealed that the club intends to provide a more comprehensive explanation for its decision in an upcoming statement.

“I’m sure by the later closure of the day, we will issue an elaborate press release to cite some of the more reasons why those decisions were taken,” Yussif added.

With the GFA expected to respond, uncertainty now surrounds Hohoe United’s status in the Ghana Premier League, raising questions about the broader implications for the competition should the decision stand.

Hohoe United sit 17th on the league standings with 30 points after 27 matches played.

Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A preview https://www.adomonline.com/ligue-1-la-liga-and-serie-a-preview-2/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 10:20:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647559 SuperSport on DStv and GOtv presents the best football in the world, with cracking action from the Premier League, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A lighting up your screens from Friday 3 to Monday 6 April.

A blockbuster weekend of European football awaits as title races, continental qualification battles, and pride are all on the line across France, Italy, and Spain.

In Ligue 1, all eyes will be on leaders Paris Saint-Germain as they host Toulouse on Friday night. PSG sit just one point clear at the summit, albeit with a game in hand over closest challengers Lens, meaning the pressure is very real despite their star-studded squad. This clash represents a chance to create breathing room, but Toulouse are capable of causing problems if complacency creeps in. The Parisians know that anything less than a win could swing momentum in the title race.

Sunday night brings another major French showdown as Monaco take on Marseille. Both sides are firmly in the mix for European places, and this fixture could prove decisive in shaping the top four. Monaco’s attacking flair will be tested against a Marseille side known for intensity and resilience, making this one of the most finely balanced encounters of the weekend.

Over in Serie A, the spotlight falls on a trio of heavyweight clashes. League leaders Inter Milan welcome Roma in what looks like a stern test of their title credentials. Inter have been dominant at the top, but Roma’s tactical discipline and counterattacking threat could make life uncomfortable. A win here would further cement Inter’s control, while Roma are desperate for points in the race for European qualification.

Equally compelling is the showdown between Napoli and AC Milan. With Champions League places and the runner-up spot at stake, this is effectively a six-pointer. Napoli’s attacking dynamism meets Milan’s experience and structure in a contest that could swing either way. Both teams understand the significance of the moment, and the intensity should reflect that.

Elsewhere in Italy, fixtures like Lazio versus Parma and Juventus against Genoa add further intrigue as teams chase consistency in a crowded table.

In La Liga, the title race takes center stage. Real Madrid travel to face Mallorca knowing they must keep pace with leaders Barcelona, who hold a four-point advantage. Madrid cannot afford any slip-ups, particularly against a Mallorca side capable of frustrating bigger opponents on their day.

The weekend’s marquee clash comes when Atletico Madrid host Barcelona. This is a defining moment in the title race: Barcelona could tighten their grip at the top, while Atletico have the chance to play spoiler and boost their own ambitions. Expect a tactical battle, with fine margins likely to decide the outcome.

Finally, Monday night sees Girona face Villarreal in a crucial encounter for European positioning. Villarreal sit narrowly ahead in the race for third, and victory here would strengthen their claim, while Girona aim to disrupt that push and climb the standings themselves.

With so much at stake across all three leagues, this weekend promises drama, intensity, and potentially season-defining results.

Cup Dreams and High Stakes: FA Cup quarterfinals promise drama https://www.adomonline.com/cup-dreams-and-high-stakes-fa-cup-quarterfinals-promise-drama/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 10:09:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647554 The road to Wembley narrows this weekend as the quarterfinals of the FA Cup deliver four compelling ties featuring some of English football’s biggest clubs alongside one of the competition’s great underdog stories. With a place in the semifinals on the line, every match carries its own narrative of ambition, pressure and opportunity.

The standout clash arrives early in the weekend when Manchester City host Liverpool in a heavyweight meeting between two of the modern era’s dominant sides. Cup ties between these rivals rarely disappoint, and both teams know the FA Cup represents a major prize at this stage of the campaign. For Liverpool, the competition has taken on added significance after their hopes of defending the Premier League title faded earlier in the season. Coach Arne Slot acknowledged the expectations that come with the club’s stature, saying: “The bar at Liverpool is always high, it has always been high and will always be high. We are a top club. The bar should be set high by the people around us, but we will set the bar just as high.” Facing City away is among the toughest assignments in English football, but Liverpool will view the cup as a chance to end the season with silverware.

Elsewhere, one of the most romantic storylines of the competition continues as Chelsea take on Port Vale. The visitors arrive as the clear underdogs, yet their journey to the quarterfinals has already been remarkable. Despite struggling in EFL League One, Port Vale stunned Sunderland in the previous round to reach this stage, proving once again that the FA Cup remains fertile ground for giant-killing moments. Chelsea will be wary of complacency as they aim to avoid becoming the next big-name casualty.

Another fascinating tie sees Southampton welcome Arsenal. Playing at home could prove crucial for the Saints, who will look to harness the energy of the crowd at St Mary’s. Coach Tonda Eckert emphasised the value of that advantage: “The most important thing is that we play at home. For everything that comes up after, it’s nice that we can finish the season with many games at St Mary’s. The away support was amazing, but the truth is you always prefer to play at home. I was quite happy that we got a home game.” Arsenal, meanwhile, will expect a stern test against a side determined to extend its cup run.

The final quarterfinal could carry enormous implications beyond the FA Cup itself when West Ham United host Leeds United. Both clubs are battling near the bottom of the Premier League table, meaning the tie arrives amid a tense relegation fight. Yet recent improvements have lifted West Ham’s confidence. Coach Nuno Espírito Santo was quick to credit his squad for the turnaround: “It’s not because of me – I think it was the players. The players have been able to improve things, and the results have helped everything. The atmosphere and the whole mood has been much better.”

With elite showdowns, a classic underdog story and teams fighting on multiple fronts, the FA Cup quarterfinals promise a weekend filled with tension, excitement and the enduring magic of English football’s oldest competition.

De Zerbi apologises to fans for Greenwood comments https://www.adomonline.com/de-zerbi-apologises-to-fans-for-greenwood-comments/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 09:59:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647546 New Tottenham head coach Roberto de Zerbi has apologised to fans over comments he made about Mason Greenwood.

The Italian’s appointment has been opposed by some fan groups because of remarks he made about the former Manchester United player, who he signed and managed at Marseille.

Greenwood faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in 2022 before they were dropped.

De Zerbi told the Spurs website: “I have never wanted to downplay the issue of violence against women, or violence against anyone more broadly.”

The 46-year-old added that he had always “stood up for those” that needed protecting.

“I’ve consistently fought and taken a stand to be on the side of those who are most at risk,” he said.

“Those of you who know me well will know that I’m not the kind of person who makes compromises to win more games or win an extra title.

“I’m sorry if I offended anyone’s feelings with this subject matter. I have a daughter, and I’m very sensitive to these things, and I always have been.

“I hope that over time, people will get to know me better and understand that at that moment, I didn’t mean to take a stance.”

Spurs turned to De Zerbi after interim head coach Igor Tudor was sacked on Sunday with the club 17th in the Premier League, just one point and one place above the relegation zone.

De Zerbi’s controversial comments

Greenwood, who was 20 at the time, was widely regarded as one of England’s most promising young players when he was arrested in January 2022.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped charges against him in February 2023 owing to “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light”, which meant there was “no realistic prospect of conviction”.

He subsequently left Old Trafford, initially moving to Spanish side Getafe on loan before signing for Marseille in July 2024 in a controversial deal worth up to £26.6m.

The 24-year-old has gone on to score 47 times in 74 appearances across all competitions for the former European champions.

Alongside Paris St-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele, Greenwood was Ligue 1’s joint top scorer last season with 21 goals.

The comments which have angered many Tottenham fans were made in November.

“I don’t want to get involved in anyone’s private life. I don’t even get into the private lives of my children, because I want to give everyone their freedom,” De Zerbi said.

“All I can see is that Mason seems a good lad; he paid in a strong way for what happened.

“He has probably here found the right environment for him, which gave him affection, and held out its hand to him.

“When I look at him as a person, I feel sad for what happened in his life, without getting into the details.

“Because the person I know here is very different to the one that has been described, especially in England.”

De Zerbi was accused of downplaying the allegations and painting Greenwood as a victim.

The comments were called “unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters” by one fans’ organisation.

‘The most important challenge’

De Zerbi’s immediate focus is on maintaining Tottenham’s top-flight status and ending a winless league run that extends back to 28 December.

However, having signed a five-year deal at the north London club, he insists he is committed for the long term and will stay even if they are relegated to the Championship.

“I signed a five-year contract because, for me, it is a big challenge and I will be the coach of Tottenham next season, no matter what,” De Zerbi added.

“Tottenham, especially in this moment, is maybe the most important challenge in my career – I’m ready to start this challenge.

“It’s a difficult moment for everyone at Tottenham, but I think we have the right qualities to come out of this moment.

“I believe in the players. I think we have to remember who we are and who the players are, because we have very big players and we have to work on their confidence and qualities.”

Chelsea’s Fernandez dropped after ‘crossing a line’ https://www.adomonline.com/chelseas-fernandez-dropped-after-crossing-a-line/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 09:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647601 Enzo Fernandez will sit out Chelsea’s next two games after he “crossed a line” with comments he made about his future at the club, says manager Liam Rosenior.

After Chelsea’s exit from the Champions League last month, Fernandez told ESPN that he did not know whether he would remain at Stamford Bridge next season.

The 25-year-old Argentine joined the Blues for what was a British record transfer fee of £107m in January 2023 and has made 161 appearances.

Rosenior said the midfielder has been dropped for Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and the Premier League fixture against Manchester City on 12 April.

“It’s disappointing for Enzo to speak that way,” Rosenior said.

“I have got no bad words to say about him but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build. As a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect. He’s frustrated because he wants us to be successful.

“In terms of the decision, it’s not all about me, or the sporting directors. The ownership, the players, we are aligned in our decision.

“The door is not closed on Enzo. It’s a sanction. You have to protect the culture, and in terms of that, a line was crossed.”

In the same interview, Fernandez said that there had been “no talks” with Real Madrid and added that he was focused on Chelsea but would “see after the World Cup”.

However, in a more recent interview, he said he would “like to live in Spain” and that Madrid reminded him of Buenos Aires.

“It’s not ideal,” Rosenior said.

“A lot of this stems from a difficult 10 days in terms of results we have had – probably the most difficult for me as a player or manager.”

Chelsea lost four successive games between 11 and 21 March, including an 8-2 defeat on aggregate in their Champions League last-16 tie with Paris St-Germain.

Defender Marc Cucurella also made suggestions that his future could lie elsewhere, opening the door to a return to Barcelona, although he clarified that he was “happy” at Chelsea and would prefer to wait a “few years” before moving on.

“The players were motivated that we could do something really special in the Champions League,” Rosenior said.

“The comments from Enzo and Marc Cucurella’s interview both stem from that. It actually stems from a good place where they want the club to succeed.

“But in those moments, we need more emotional stability as a group of players.”

Rosenior said he spent 30 minutes talking with Cucurella on Thursday and believes the Spain international is “fully committed”.

Chelsea have won 10 of their 19 games since Rosenior took charge in January, losing seven and drawing two.

They sit sixth in the Premier League and are six points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race for a Champions League spot.

Italy and Gattuso ‘mutually terminate’ contract https://www.adomonline.com/italy-and-gattuso-mutually-terminate-contract/ Fri, 03 Apr 2026 09:10:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647625 Manager Gennaro Gattuso and Italy have agreed to “mutually terminate” his contract after their failure to qualify for a third successive World Cup.

Italy missed out on a spot at this summer’s showpiece event when they were beaten 4-1 on penalties by Bosnia-Herzegovina in Tuesday’s play-off.

Gattuso, who won 73 caps for the Azzurri during his playing career, was appointed as Luciano Spalletti’s successor in June and won six of his eight games in charge.

An emotional Gattuso apologised for the defeat during his post-match news conference and admitted it was “hard to digest”.

“With a heavy heart, having failed to achieve the goal we set ourselves, I consider my time as coach of the national team to be over,” Gattuso said.

“The Azzurri jersey is the most precious asset in football, which is why it’s right to facilitate future technical evaluations right from the start.

“It has been an honour to lead the national team, and to do so with a group of players who have shown commitment and devotion to the jersey.”

It follows the resignation of Gabriele Gravina as the head of Italy’s football association (FIGC) on Thursday.

Former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who was working closely with the national side, also resigned as delegation head via Instagram.

Italy are four-time World Cup champions but last featured at the tournament in 2014.

No previous winner of the tournament has missed three World Cups in a row, which Italy now have after missing out on Russia in 2018 and Qatar 2022.

GFA President defends retention of Otto Addo despite AFCON setback https://www.adomonline.com/gfa-president-defends-retention-of-otto-addo-despite-afcon-setback/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 13:38:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647326 The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has defended the decision to retain Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars, despite the team failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Ghana’s absence from the continental tournament in Morocco marked the first time in over two decades that the Black Stars missed out, following a disappointing qualifying campaign in which they finished bottom of their group after six matches.

The setback sparked widespread criticism from fans and pundits, many calling for Addo’s dismissal. However, speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Okraku said the GFA Executive Council shared his view that changing the technical leadership at the time was unnecessary.

“I never believed that I had to let the coach go at that time. And we never believed, as an ExCo, that we had to let the coach go at that time. And we stay with that position,” he stated.

Okraku acknowledged the public backlash but suggested that decisions at the highest level of football are often influenced by factors not visible to the public.

“We’ve all done football at various levels, and sometimes there are auxiliary reasons why certain decisions have to be taken or not to be taken. Some of these reasons are not available to a lot of people,” he explained.

Despite the criticism, the GFA boss said the decision ultimately proved beneficial, pointing to Ghana’s subsequent qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“But I look back, and I’m happy that we took that decision. At the end, we qualified for the Mundial with the same gaffer, and I don’t regret it at all,” he added.

Although Addo led Ghana to World Cup qualification, he has since been relieved of his duties following back-to-back defeats in international friendlies against Austria and Germany. The GFA is expected to announce a new head coach in the coming weeks.

It’s unfair to blame Kurt Okraku over Hohoe United’s withdrawal – George Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/its-unfair-to-blame-kurt-okraku-over-hohoe-uniteds-withdrawal-george-afriyie/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 12:00:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647305 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has pushed back against attempts to link the challenges facing Hohoe United to GFA President Kurt Okraku, insisting the situation stems from broader structural issues involving both the club’s ownership and the Football Association.

His remarks come in the wake of Hohoe United’s decision on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, to withdraw from the ongoing 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, citing systemic challenges and what they describe as unfair treatment.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Afriyie criticised inconsistencies in the enforcement of disciplinary measures, arguing that the FA has failed to apply stricter sanctions for repeat offences.

“What has happened to Hohoe United is not linked to Kurt Okraku. We are not being fair to him. The real problem lies with the club owners, and the FA itself is complicit,” Afriyie stated.

He further questioned the FA’s disciplinary framework, pointing out that repeated breaches often attract similar penalties instead of progressively harsher punishments.

“Under our own rules, a repetition of an offence calls for a stiffer punishment. So if I’m Hohoe United and I’m fined GH₵5000 for doing something wrong, and I repeat the offense, it shouldn’t be GH₵5000, but I can show you decisions of the FA, where even 3 times repetition of an offense receives almost the punishment,” he added.

At the time of their withdrawal, Hohoe United were languishing in the relegation zone with 30 points from 27 matches.

With seven games remaining, the Kpando-based side faced a daunting schedule—set to play just one match at their designated home ground, while the remaining six fixtures, including nominal home ties, were to be staged at alternative venues.

Club officials maintain that the arrangement significantly weakened their survival prospects in the top flight.

Hohoe United Administrative Manager says club had no choice but to withdraw from GPL https://www.adomonline.com/hohoe-united-administrative-manager-says-club-had-no-choice-but-to-withdraw-from-gpl/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 11:37:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647292 The Administrative Manager of Hohoe United Football Club, Yussif Alhassan Uthman, has insisted that the club’s decision to withdraw from the Ghana Premier League was the only viable option.

The club announced its withdrawal on Wednesday, April 1, following an emergency board meeting, describing the move as a “principled stand against injustice” and accusing the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of systemic bias and unfair treatment.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Uthman said the decision followed “terrible officiating” in their match against Dreams FC and restrictions that prevented them from playing home games in the Volta Region.

“Despite the availability of Premier League venues within our region, we were still told there’s no way we would play in the Volta Region, so we had to choose between Accra or Tema,” he said.

He added: “In the game we played in Tema against Dreams FC, we witnessed one of the worst officiating performances any team could have. We felt it was calculated, and at this point, withdrawing remained the only option.”

At the time of withdrawal, Hohoe United were in the relegation zone, with 30 points from 27 matches and seven games remaining. Under the current fixture schedule, the Kpando-based club was set to play just one of their remaining seven matches at their home ground, while six others—even as the home team—would be played away.

What began as a promising season now ends amid controversy, with consequences that could extend beyond the current campaign.

Otto Addo should have been sacked earlier – Nyaho Tamakloe https://www.adomonline.com/otto-addo-should-have-been-sacked-earlier-nyaho-tamakloe/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 06:52:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647131 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has said Otto Addo should have been dismissed much earlier from his role as Black Stars head coach.

Addo, 50, who was reappointed in March 2024, was relieved of his duties following a string of disappointing results in recent pre-World Cup friendlies. Ghana suffered a heavy 5–1 defeat to Austria in Vienna before losing 2–1 to Germany in Stuttgart.

Speaking in an interview with Kessben FM, the Hearts of Oak board member insisted the decision to part ways with the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach came too late.

“Otto Addo should have been sacked long ago; he has been a disappointment,” he said.

Dr Tamakloe also revealed that the coach ignored advice he offered regarding the inclusion of locally based players in the national team setup.

“I advised Otto Addo to travel across the country to scout local players, but he asked if I wanted him to become a laughingstock. Today, the situation speaks for itself,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association is expected to name a new head coach within the next two weeks.

The Black Stars will regroup in May and June for their final preparatory matches against Mexico and Wales.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia when the tournament kicks off on June 11 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Black Stars can still improve despite setbacks ahead of World Cup – Hans Sarpei https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-can-still-improve-despite-setbacks-ahead-of-world-cup-hans-sarpei/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 06:48:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647112 Former Black Stars defender Hans Adu Sarpei believes Ghana still has time to sharpen its game ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite a disappointing run of recent results.

The senior national team, as part of their preparations, suffered back-to-back defeats in international friendlies against Austria and Germany. Ghana were handed a heavy 5–1 loss by Austria before narrowly falling 2–1 to Germany.

Sarpei, while expressing concern over Ghana’s late collapse against Germany, noted signs of progress in the team’s performance compared to the earlier defeat.

“Germany are a very good team, so losing 2–1 is not necessarily a bad result. However, when you are level going into the final minute, you need to fight to at least secure that one point,” he told Joy Sports.

He added that the response after the Austria defeat was encouraging.

“After the 5–1 defeat to Austria, the response we showed against Germany was encouraging. We played much better, but there is still room for improvement.”

The defeats led to the dismissal of head coach Otto Addo, leaving the Black Stars without a manager with just 70 days to go before the tournament kicks off.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), led by Kurt Okraku, has indicated that a new head coach is expected to be appointed within the next two weeks as the team continues preparations for the global showpiece.

Hans Adu Sarpei questions GFA’s decision to sack Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/hans-adu-sarpei-questions-gfas-decision-to-sack-otto-addo/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 06:43:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647107 Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei has expressed strong disagreement with the Ghana Football Association’s decision to dismiss Otto Addo, insisting the coach should have been retained to lead the Black Stars into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Ghana FA parted ways with Addo following back-to-back friendly defeats against Germany and Austria, just months after reappointing him in March 2024.

Sarpei, who featured for Ghana at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, downplayed the significance of the recent friendly results, arguing that such matches should not determine a coach’s suitability.

He maintained that Addo earned the right to continue, having successfully guided the team to World Cup qualification despite earlier setbacks.

“When we didn’t qualify for the [AFCON], there was a lot of shouting,” Sarpei told Joy Sports.

“Then he qualified us for the World Cup. He brought the team to the World Cup; he should go with the team [to the World Cup]. World Cup and friendly games are totally different,” he added.

Addo, who also served as a Borussia Dortmund scout, had faced mounting criticism after Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations — the country’s first absence from the tournament in two decades — even though he secured World Cup qualification.

With the head coach position now vacant, reports suggest the GFA is considering several high-profile candidates, including former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah, Sudan’s current head coach; Walid Regragui, who led Morocco to a historic World Cup semi-final; and Saudi Arabia boss Hervé Renard.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are set to continue their World Cup preparations with international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 World Cup alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with hopes of advancing beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.

Current Black Stars lack confidence and experience – Hans Adu Sarpei https://www.adomonline.com/current-black-stars-lack-confidence-and-experience-hans-adu-sarpei/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 06:32:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647100 Former Ghana international Hans Adu Sarpei has expressed concerns over the Black Stars’ current squad, describing it as lacking confidence and experience.

Although Ghana has secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the team’s recent performances have been inconsistent, culminating in the dismissal of coach Otto Addo following consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany.

Sarpei, a member of Ghana’s historic 2010 World Cup squad, contrasted the current team with that generation, emphasising the difference in cohesion and leadership.

“Don’t compare the 2010 squad to this current one. They are two completely different teams,” he said.

“We had more confidence, more experience, and bigger personalities in the team than we do now. We had also played together for about three or four years before that World Cup.”

He noted that the present squad is dealing with several challenges, including frequent changes in personnel, coaching uncertainty, and the failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Now it’s different. New players are coming in, there are issues involving the coaching situation and the players, and they didn’t go to the Nations Cup. There are so many things happening now, so it’s not easy for the players,” he added.

The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May and June for final preparatory matches against Mexico and Wales ahead of the World Cup, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia in Group L, beginning on June 11 across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Italian FA head Gravina quits over World Cup failure https://www.adomonline.com/italian-fa-head-gravina-quits-over-world-cup-failure/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 06:31:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647360 Gabriele Gravina has resigned as the head of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) following the national side’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.

Four-time world champions Italy suffered another play-off final defeat when they were beaten 4-1 on penalties by Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday.

No previous winner of the tournament has missed three World Cups in a row, which Italy now have after missing out on Russia in 2018 and Qatar 2022.

Gravina, 72, who is also the Uefa first vice-president, announced his resignation on Thursday following a meeting held at the FIGC’s headquarters in Rome.

He took the job in October 2018, with his predecessor Carlo Tavecchio having stepped down following Italy’s failure to beat Sweden in a World Cup play-off the previous year.

Italy won Euro 2020 during Gravina’s tenure, beating England in a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium. But the country’s football federation is under scrutiny following the failure to qualify for this summer’s World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Gravina oversaw the appointments of former head coach Luciano Spalletti and current boss Gennaro Gattuso. Before resigning, Gravina told reporters he had asked Gattuso to stay despite missing out on the World Cup.

In a statement, the FIGC said a vote to elect a new president will be held on 22 June. Among the leading candidates to take over is Giovanni Malago, the former head of the Italian Olympic Committee, who was also president of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics organisation committee.

In a further blow, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin has warned Italy could lose its role as co-host of the European Championship in 2032 unless the country upgrades its football infrastructure.

Italy is set to host the tournament with Turkey, but its lack of modern stadiums has drawn criticism, with a number of clubs struggling to upgrade their grounds, often because of disputes with public authorities.

The country’s football federation has until October to put forward five stadiums to Uefa, the European governing body, to host Euro 2032 matches.

“Euro 2032 is scheduled and will take place. I hope the infrastructure will be ready,” Ceferin told Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Otherwise, the tournament will not be played in Italy.”

Ceferin, who had given his backing to Gravina before the news of his resignation was made public, said the former FIGC president was not to blame for the nation’s lack of stadium regeneration.

“Perhaps it is Italian politicians who should be asking themselves why Italy has some of the worst football infrastructure in Europe,” he said.

We will appoint a proven winner as Black Stars coach – GFA President https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-appoint-a-proven-winner-as-black-stars-coach-gfa-president/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 06:28:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647097 President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, says the association is determined to appoint a new head coach capable of rebuilding confidence within the Black Stars setup.

The search for a new manager follows the dismissal of Otto Addo on Monday, March 31, after a disappointing run of results during the March international window.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Okraku stressed that the Executive Council (ExCo) is focused on securing a coach with the pedigree and leadership qualities needed to deliver at the highest level.

“We want to move forward, and I think that the ExCo is well placed to bring in the next one [coach]. Hopefully, this next one will be the one that will give everyone the confidence,” he stated.

Okraku outlined key attributes expected of the next coach, highlighting the importance of a strong track record—particularly at club level—alongside experience in national team management.

According to him, the ideal candidate should have a history of winning trophies and possess the authority to command respect within the dressing room.

“[He] will be the person with a good record of having managed at the club level and hopefully at the national team level, would be someone who has won trophies and generally would be someone who will bring confidence to the changing room,” he added.

He further emphasised the need for a figure whose achievements can inspire belief among players.

“The players will look up to that person and say this guy has done it before and he knows what he is talking about.”

Addo’s exit came after Ghana suffered back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany, results that intensified pressure on the technical team.

Meanwhile, Okraku revealed that more than 600 coaches have applied for the vacant Black Stars job, underlining the scale of interest in one of Africa’s most high-profile national team roles.

Appoint coach who understands Ghana’s football identity – Fred Pappoe urges GFA https://www.adomonline.com/appoint-coach-who-understands-ghanas-football-identity-fred-pappoe-urges-gfa/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 06:25:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647094 Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, has called on decision-makers to prioritise a coach who understands the country’s football identity as the search for a new Black Stars manager intensifies.

His comments follow the GFA’s announcement on Monday, March 31, confirming the dismissal of Otto Addo after Ghana’s back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany in pre-World Cup friendly matches.

Weighing in on the criteria for the next appointment, Pappoe emphasised the need for a manager capable of making an immediate impact without requiring an extended adaptation period.

“If we want to go for a coach, we have to go for someone who can hit the ground running; someone who knows our football culture,” he told Citi Sports.

Ghana’s coaching history has seen a mix of local and foreign tacticians, with success often linked to those who demonstrated a strong grasp of the domestic football structure and player dynamics.

Meanwhile, GFA President Kurt Okraku has disclosed that more than 600 applications have been received for the vacant role, with a new head coach expected to be named within the next two weeks.

The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May for an international friendly against Mexico, before facing Wales on June 2 in their final preparatory matches ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

How will the tournament work?

A record 48 nations – up from the 32 that featured in Qatar four years ago – will take part in the 2026 edition, making it the largest World Cup field, with 104 matches to be played across three countries for the first time.

It will take place in 16 cities – 11 in the US, three in Mexico and two in Canada – between 11 June and 19 July.

The tournament will also last a record 39 days – an increase from 29 days in Qatar and 32 in 2014 and 2018 – and a new format features 12 groups of four.

Mexico will face South Africa in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca to open the tournament on Thursday, 11 June – 18 days after the conclusion of the Premier League season.

The top two teams from the 12 groups and the eight best third‑placed nations will advance into an expanded knockout phase that will begin with a round of 32.

The new world champion will be crowned at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on 19 July.

When will the games be played?

With games taking place across four time zones and at locations up to 2,800 miles apart, there will be a total of 13 different kick-off times.

That means for viewers in Europe, some games will be played from midnight onwards.

For example, all five of the group-stage matches in Kansas City will take place in the middle of the night UK time, with the earliest kick-off being 00:00 BST on Friday, 26 June for Tunisia against the Netherlands while the latest is a 03:00 BST start for Algeria versus Austria on Sunday, 28 June.

The San Francisco Bay Area hosts two games that will kick off at 05:00 BST – Austria versus Jordan on Tuesday, 16 June and Turkey versus Paraguay on Friday, 19 June.

There are also 05:00 BST games in Vancouver – Australia versus Turkeyon Saturday, 13 June – and in Guadalupe, Mexico, when Tunisia take on Japan on Saturday, 20 June.

In total there will be 35 group-stage games that kick-off between 00:00 BST and 05:00 BST, which is almost half of the 72 fixtures for that stage.

However, the most common kick-off time is 20:00 BST, with 12 group-stage games taking place then.

Who are the favourites to win?

European champions Spain are the favourites, having enjoyed an almost flawless route through qualification.

Their squad is packed with talent such as Pedri, Fabian Ruiz, Martin Zubimendi, 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri and Lamine Yamal, who is one of the best young players in the world.

Just behind Spain, this generation of England players is tipped to land some silverware, having finished runners-up at the past two Euros.

Thomas Tuchel’s team qualified for the World Cup with a perfect record, winning all of their matches without conceding a goal. They have a squad brimming with big names including Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.

France are also strong contenders. Didier Deschamps’ squad have a fearsome front line, including Bradley Barcola, Michael Olise, Kylian Mbappe and Hugo Ekitike, and the 2022 runners-up were unbeaten in European qualifying.

Defending World Cup champions Argentina won the South American qualifying group by a big margin, finishing nine points ahead of second-placed Ecuador.

With two Copa Americas and one World Cup win in just four years, the Albiceleste are looking strong.

Finally, despitean underwhelming qualification campaign – in which they finished fifth in the Conmebol table after losing six of their 18 matches – and winning the last of their record five World Cups 22 years ago, who would confidently rule out Brazil?

Who are the outside contenders?

Norway have not played in the World Cup since 1998 and have never got past the last 16, but with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland scoring 16 goals in qualifying, they could be a surprise in the summer.

They were flawless in qualifying, winning all eight of their matches, including home and away victories over four-time winners Italy.

Morocco were another side to win all of their qualifying games and they sit eighth in the world rankings. They reached the final of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations and, despite being beaten 1-0 by Senegal, they have been controversially awarded the title. They will likely be confident of advancing from a group that contains Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.

Egypt, featuring Mohamed Salah, will also expect to make it beyond a group that includes Belgium, New Zealand and Iran.

Japan are the strongest of the Asian sides and cruised through qualifying, conceding only three goals in 16 matches. And they recorded their first victory over England with a 1-0 friendly win at Wembley at the end of March. They will be up against the Netherlands, Tunisia and Sweden.

Colombia will be confident of a strongshowing after a good South American qualifying campaign in which they beat both Brazil and Argentina as they finished third overall.

What about the host nations? Well, Canada, in their third finals, could be a surprise. They have lost all six of their previous World Cup finals matches, but a kind draw has them in with Qatar, Switzerland and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Who are the World Cup debutants?

Four nations are set to make their World Cup debut this summer.

The tiny Caribbean island of Curacao will become the smallest nation to participate in a World Cup when they take on Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador in Group E.

Curacao, 37 miles off the Venezuela coast, has a population of a little more than 150,000 (similar to Cambridge or Huddersfield) and a land area of 171 square miles, smaller than the Isle of Man.

They only became a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, are the third-smallest nation after Curacao and Iceland to reach the World Cup. The Blue Sharks secured top spot in their qualifying group ahead of African heavyweights Cameroon.

An archipelago of 10 islands in the Atlantic Ocean with a population of fewer than 525,000, Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975 and first attempted to reach the World Cup when it was held in Japan and South Korea in 2002. They face Spain, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H

There are two debutants from Asia in Uzbekistan and Jordan.

The Uzbeks, who were the Asian Cup semi-finalists in 2011, ended their long wait for qualification under 2006 World Cup-winning Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro.

The White Wolves boast players such as Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov and former Roma striker Eldor Shomurodov and will hope to make an impact in a group featuring Portugal, Colombia and DR Congo.

Jordan, meanwhile, finished behind South Korea with four wins and four draws from 10 matches in the third round of the qualifiers in Asia.

Ranked 64th in the world, their progress has been steady, reaching the final of the 2023 Asian Cup, when they were beaten by hosts Qatar. Argentina, Algeria and Austria await in Group J.

Lamine Yamal condemns racist abuse aimed at Egypt https://www.adomonline.com/lamine-yamal-condemns-racist-abuse-aimed-at-egypt/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 05:25:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647083 Lamine Yamal said the racist chants during Spain’s 0-0 draw with Egypt in Barcelona on Tuesday were “disrespectful and intolerable”.

Police in Spain are investigating “Islamophobic and xenophobic” chants heard during the first half of the friendly at RCDE Stadium in Barcelona.

At half-time a message warning fans against xenophobic remarks and singing was displayed on the screen at the stadium – the message was repeated early in the second half, leading to whistles from some sections of the crowd.

“I know it [the chant] was directed at the opposing team and wasn’t personal against me, but as a Muslim, it’s still disrespectful and intolerable,” Spain winger Lamine Yamal, who is a practising Muslim, wrote on Instagram.

“I understand that not all fans are like that, but to those who chant these things: using a religion as a taunt on the field makes you ignorant and racist.

“Football is for enjoying and cheering, not for disrespecting people for who they are or what they believe.”

Lamine Yamal, 18, was making his 26th appearance for Spain and played a key role in helping his nation win the European Championship in 2024.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has also condemned the anti-Muslim chants.

“The RFEF stands against racism in football and condemns any act of violence inside stadiums,” it said in a statement on social media.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente called the chants “intolerable” and said “violent people use football to carve out a space for themselves”.

“They must be removed from society, identified, and kept as far away as possible,” De la Fuente added.

Tuesday’s game was due to be played in Qatar but was moved to the home of La Liga side Espanyol because of the war in the Middle East.

De la Fuente made 10 changes from Friday’s 3-0 friendly win over Serbia, with Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal the only player to keep his place, while Egypt were without injured Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah.

The result also led to Spain, one of the co-hosts of the next World Cup in 2030, losing their top place in the world rankings.

Foden not guaranteed World Cup squad spot – Tuchel https://www.adomonline.com/foden-not-guaranteed-world-cup-squad-spot-tuchel/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 05:23:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647080 England manager Thomas Tuchel has said Phil Foden does not have a guaranteed place in his World Cup squad.

The 25-year-old Manchester City midfielder was the only player to start both games in England’s final camp before Tuchel selects his 24-man squad.

But he failed to fill the void left by striker Harry Kane’s absence when he played in a false nine role in the defeat by Japan on Tuesday.

And when asked after the game whether there are doubts about the player’s spot in the World Cup squad, the German said: “Well, it’s not a guarantee that he will come.”

Tuchel said Foden was “excellent” in training but “struggles to show it on the pitch”.

“Obviously he didn’t have a lot of minutes for City recently, then he came to camp with the brightest smile and was so good in training,” the England boss added.

“And I thought he will just surprise us and will play with the same verve and excitement but, yeah, he struggles to have the full impact.”

Tuchel must submit his final squad to Fifa by 30 May before they begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia on 17 June in Arlington, Texas.

Foden was deployed as a false nine against Japan but made little impression before Tuchel brought on striker Dominic Solanke in the 59th minute.

He has started just four of Manchester City’s past 15 games and has not scored since 14 December, when he finished a run of six goals in five games.

Captain Donnarumma vows to restore Italy after heartbreak https://www.adomonline.com/captain-donnarumma-vows-to-restore-italy-after-heartbreak/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 05:21:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647076 Gianluigi Donnarumma says he “cried because of the enormous sadness” of not being able to lead Italy to the 2026 World Cup this summer, following their penalty shootout defeat by Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Italy have now failed to qualify for three successive World Cups, drawing 1-1 on Tuesday before losing their play-off final 4-1 on penalties, having lost Alessandro Bastoni to a first-half red card.

Goalkeeper Donnarumma, 27, made numerous saves in the second half but during the shootout appeared to get into an argument with Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, with reports claiming the Italian captain damaged Vasilj’s penalty-takers cheat sheet.

He also had to be held back by his team-mates at full-time after trying to confront the celebrating Bosnia players.

“Last night, after the match, I cried. I cried because of the disappointment of not being able to lead Italy where it deserves to be,” Donnarumma wrote on Instagram.

He failed to save any of the penalties while Italy’s Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante missed theirs.

“I cried because of the enormous sadness I’m feeling, along with the entire Azzurri team, of which I’m proud to be captain, and I know you, fans of our national team, are feeling it too,” Donnarumma added.

The Manchester City keeper, who was handed his senior debut in 2016 aged 17, is yet to play at a World Cup and will have to wait until he is at least 31 for his next opportunity.

He was 15 when Italy lost against Uruguay and exited the 2014 World Cup in the group stage.

He wrote it would take “a lot of strength, passion, and conviction” to restore his country “back where it deserves to be”.

The former Paris St-Germain and AC Milan keeper added: “Always believe; this is the driving force behind moving forward. Because life knows how to reward those who give their all, without holding back.

“And this is where we must start again. Together. Once again.”

‘Even when you’re let down, you always hold out hope’

Since Italy’s last appearance in a World Cup knockout game – when they beat France to lift the trophy in 2006 – water has been discovered on Mars, Leicester City won the Premier League, the iPhone was created and Spain star Lamine Yamal, who finished runner-up in last year’s Ballon d’Or, was not even born.

Their latest failure to reach international football’s premier competition has drawn widespread criticism from fans, journalists and politicians, with calls for Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina to resign.

“It is an unacceptable disgrace. Italian football needs a complete overhaul, starting with the resignation of Gabriele Gravina,” the League Party, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s coalition, wrote on Instagram.

Italy’s sport minister Andrea Abodi has also called for sweeping changes within the FIGC.

“It’s clear that Italian football needs to be rebuilt from the ground up and that starts with changes at the top of the FIGC,” Abodi said in a statement.

The front page of Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Serra labelled it “the World Cup curse” and stressed the requirement for a rebuilding movement.

Supporters watched the Azzurri in establishments across the country, hoping their third successive World Cup play-off campaign might end differently than the previous two, when they lost against Sweden in 2018 and North Macedonia in 2022.

But they returned home at the end of the night with a familiar sinking feeling.

“It makes no sense. Honestly, I’m shocked,” Davide Caldaretta, who watched the game at a city pub, told news agency Reuters.

“[We feel] really upset and disappointed. Even when you’re let down, you always hold out hope. And this is the third time in a row,” Melanie Cardillo added.

Final ticket sales phase begins for FIFA World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/final-ticket-sales-phase-begins-for-fifa-world-cup/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 05:04:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647247 The fourth and final phase of ticket sales for the 2026 World Cup in North America began on Wednesday, FIFA announced.

The phase for the June 11–July 19 event in the United States, Mexico and Canada involves more than three million tickets.

This “last-minute” sales phase opened at 1500 GMT on the official website, FIFA.com/tickets, the global governing body stated in a press release.

Tickets are being sold on a “first-come, first-served” basis and will remain available until the end of the competition on July 19, it added.

Tickets will be released for sale on a rolling basis – including, on occasion, for matches taking place on the very same day – according to FIFA.

At the scheduled time, prospective buyers were directed to a “waiting” page to “queue” while awaiting access to the site, a wait that could last several hours.

“A countdown will appear before you can enter the ticket sales phase. Once the countdown is over, an ‘Enter’ button will be available for 5 minutes. Click it to access,” instructions specify.

In total, nearly seven million tickets are being offered for the competition, taking into account the capacities of the 16 stadiums hosting the global tournament.

More than three million of these tickets have already been sold during the first three sales phases – including over one million during the random selection draw phase alone (held in January and February), which received 500 million requests, according to FIFA.

The global governing body is likely to break the all-time record of 3.5 million tickets sold for a World Cup – a mark set during the 1994 edition.

This summer, the tournament will feature 48 teams and 104 matches, 78 of which will take place on American soil.

The issue of ticketing has sparked controversy, with FIFA facing accusations of offering tickets at exorbitant prices, in disregard of promises made when the tournament was awarded to the three host nations.

On March 24, Football Supporters Europe (FSE) – an organisation representing European fans – and Euroconsumers – a group representing consumers across the continent – announced they had filed a complaint against FIFA with the European Commission.

They alleged abuse of a dominant market position and seek to compel the organisation to abandon its “opaque and unfair” ticket purchasing procedures. FIFA has defended its ticket pricing, which, according to president Gianni Infantino, is driven by “crazy” demand.

However, in December, the governing body did introduce a $60 ticket category reserved exclusively for official supporters’ clubs; yet, according to the FSE, this quota was virtually sold out before sales even opened to the general public.

Additionally, FIFA is set to reopen its official ticket resale and exchange platform on Thursday. This platform has also come under fire due to the equally prohibitive prices at which tickets are listed for resale.

The global governing body explained that it does not intervene in this “fan-to-fan market,” where the reseller “determines the listed price of each ticket” in Canada and the United States.

The legal framework differs in Mexico, however, where reselling a ticket for more than its original purchase price is prohibited.

Isak to return to training this week – Slot https://www.adomonline.com/isak-to-return-to-training-this-week-slot/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647241 Alexander Isak will return to team training on Thursday, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has confirmed.

Club record £125m signing Isak has been ruled out since December, having fractured his leg and had ankle surgery.

The 26-year-old Sweden striker managed 16 appearances and scored three goals for the Reds before his injury against Tottenham.

“I think Alex is in a really good place because Sweden qualified for the World Cup and, apart from that, he’s going to train with the group again for the first time tomorrow,” Slot told the club’s website.

“If you’ve worked so hard for three, four months or something like that and then to return to team training, that’s for everyone very nice. So Alex is, in that sense, in a good place.”

Liverpool are preparing to face Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at Etihad Stadium on Saturday (12:45 BST).

The Reds signed Isak from Newcastle United for a British record transfer fee in September.

He had surgery on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture, sustained following a challenge by Micky van de Ven as he scored against Spurs in a 2-1 win on 20 December.

A Red Devil’s Renaissance: How Danny Welbeck defied the odds to become Brighton’s master mentor https://www.adomonline.com/a-red-devils-renaissance-how-danny-welbeck-defied-the-odds-to-become-brightons-master-mentor/ Thu, 02 Apr 2026 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647253 At 35, Danny Welbeck is playing some of the finest football of his career, fuelled by the relentless standards instilled in him during his formative years at Manchester United.

In a reflection on his remarkable journey, the seasoned striker opens up about surviving career-threatening injuries, mentoring the next generation at Brighton & Hove Albion, and why his love for the beautiful game burns brighter than ever.

There is a quiet dignity to Danny Welbeck.

In a modern footballing era characterised by fleeting loyalties and instantaneous gratification, the 35-year-old forward stands as a testament to resilience, meticulous craft, and an unwavering love for the game.

Sitting down with Premier League Productions to reflect on a career that has spanned the highest peaks and the most agonising valleys, Welbeck exudes the calm aura of a man who has seen it all.

Reminded by his interviewer of their first meeting when he was just a teenager breaking through the ranks, Welbeck smiles warmly.

“It has been a long journey,” he acknowledges. “It’s nice to sit here with you today.”

That journey began in the most hallowed of proving grounds: the Manchester United dressing room of the late 2000s.

It was an environment glittering with footballing royalty—Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, Edwin van der Sar, and Cristiano Ronaldo. For a local boy from Longsight, stepping into that world was nothing short of magical.

“It was surreal,” Welbeck recalls, his eyes lighting up at the memory.”

“I was a United fan, a local lad coming through the academy, idolising that team. They were serial winners; it was everything I dreamed of. To walk into that dressing room and be part of it was a privilege.”

“I learned from incredible players and personalities. They really nurtured me, put an arm around me, welcomed me, but also demanded high standards. They showed me what it takes to be part of that team.”

Surviving in that legendary squad required more than just raw ability.

Seated between Giggs and Ronaldo, a young Welbeck absorbed the blueprint for greatness firsthand.

“I was always in awe of Cristiano Ronaldo,” he admits.

“I sat between him and Giggs in the dressing room. Watching how hard he worked made it clear, his success isn’t a coincidence. He’s gone beyond special.”

It was a masterclass in the unglamorous reality of elite sportsmanship. “Talent is only a small part of it,” Welbeck notes.

“The dedication, the work ethic—that’s what takes you to the next level. I had the right role models and learned from everyone, taking bits from each of them and applying it to my own game.”

The payoff for that dedication arrived in unforgettable fashion with his Premier League debut against Stoke City, marked by a stunning 30-yard strike.

“I’ll never forget it. I played a one-two with Manucho and thought, ‘I’m having a shot.’ It went in, an incredible feeling. I wasn’t even sure I’d be on the bench that day, but the manager told me I would be. I came on, made my debut, and scored. Unforgettable.”

Behind the relentless pursuit of trophies at Old Trafford was an unshakeable camaraderie, cultivated by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.

“It really was [a family],” Welbeck says of the squad’s togetherness.

“Everyone was world-class, but they knew they needed each other. That togetherness came from the manager and ran through the whole club. I was welcomed so well, but you also needed a certain character to be accepted in that environment.”

Of Sir Alex, Welbeck’s reverence is absolute.

“He had that presence that made you want to run through a brick wall for him. His man-management was incredible. He had everyone fighting for the same goal: winning.”

Leaving his boyhood sanctuary was a bitter pill. “Yes, very hard,” he reflects.

“It was my boyhood club. But when Louis van Gaal came in, he had different ideas.”

A move to Arsenal opened a new chapter, one that brought both joy and immense physical adversity. Working under another luminary, Arsène Wenger, provided a fresh perspective.

“I was lucky to play under both him and Sir Alex. They were very different, but both successful. It taught me there’s more than one way to succeed.”

It was Wenger who offered a poignant piece of wisdom during one of Welbeck’s darkest periods on the treatment table. “I had a great relationship with Wenger.

After my second knee injury, he told me I’d get those lost years back at the end of my career, and that stuck with me.”

Injuries are the cruellest thief of a footballer’sprime, but Welbeck refused to let them define him.

“Yes, they are [tough]. You just want to play and help the team. During those times, I asked myself what I could still improve. It built resilience and reminded me that football isn’t everything in life. It made me a better person and player.”

A subsequent stint at Watford proved to be a gruelling test of that hard-won resilience.

“Huge transition,” he admits.

“Going from United to Arsenal to Watford was very different. I was coming off a serious ankle injury and had a metal plate in my leg. I wasn’t as sharp as I wanted to be. After that season, I had the plate removed and felt reborn. Even in tough periods, I always try to take something positive from it.”

That rebirth led him to the south coast, where he has found a glorious late-career renaissance with Brighton & Hove Albion.

What began as a short-term gamble has blossomed into a vital partnership.

“It really has been [the perfect fit],” Welbeck beams. “I initially signed for one year, not knowing what to expect. At first, I was even playing on the wing again. But over the last few years, I’ve been playing centrally.”

“The club has been great to me, and I’ve enjoyed every minute. There’s still more to come and I really want to help people around me. If I can give advice or confidence, it goes a long way.”

Today, Welbeck is the veteran imparting wisdom, a role he cherishes.

“That’s true. Now, with younger players, I try to share my experience, what’s required to succeed. Some take it, some don’t. I’m just happy to pass on advice as one of the senior players. Yes, and I take pride in that. Sometimes less is more, young players don’t always need to force things. A little advice can help them massively.”

His age has brought a refined intelligence to his game. Likened to a fine wine, Welbeck laughs.

“I hope so, I just take it day by day, stay grateful, and enjoy the present. I feel good.”

Maintaining top-flight conditioning at 35 requires discipline.

“Some sessions are slightly modified, but mostly I train fully with the team,” he explains. “Recovery is key—eating well, staying hydrated, preparing properly. Doing that consistently has helped me stay in good shape.”

On the pitch, he is a vocal leader. “It’s part of my role. I don’t even realise what I’m saying sometimes, I’m just in the moment. Communication gives players confidence. Even hearing someone behind you makes a difference in your decision-making.”

His tactical acumen, particularly his lethal movement, remains sharp.

“It comes from training, patterns of play, and understanding space. Small movements can create big opportunities.”

Ironically, those precise movements have frequently come back to haunt his old club, with Welbeck netting several times against Manchester United in recent years.

“(laughs) Yes, I remember those goals,” he chuckles.

“Being in the right position makes things easier. Sometimes simple goals are the best ones.”

As he looks to the horizon, the fire that was lit on the training grounds of Carrington all those years ago still burns brightly.

“Yes, I’m really enjoying it,” he concludes. “It feels good and don’t see myself stopping anytime soon. It’s been an incredible journey, one I’m proud of, and I’m excited for what’s next.”

Old Tafo MP slams decision to sack Otto Addo [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/former-sports-minister-slams-decision-to-sack-otto-addo-audio/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 17:36:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2647031 A Ranking member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has sharply criticised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) over the dismissal of Otto Addo, calling the move poorly timed and indicative of weak leadership.

The GFA confirmed Addo’s departure on Monday, March 31, following consecutive losses to Austria and Germany in pre-World Cup friendlies.

Speaking to Adom FM, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo questioned the timing and reasoning behind the decision, suggesting it lacked strategic foresight.

“Is it because the team couldn’t score against Germany that Otto Addo was asked to leave? This is the wrong time, a bad strategy, and a very poor decision. It does not demonstrate proper leadership or clear planning from the GFA,” he said.

He added that the passion of Ghanaian football supporters should not be underestimated.

“Many fans are personally funding their trips to cheer on the Black Stars. We cannot toy with the heart of the Ghanaian public. It’s a risky move,” Oppong Asamoah warned.

While acknowledging that a new coach could potentially guide Ghana to better results, he stressed that the process must be thoughtful.

“We need a replacement who can be widely accepted and help Ghana achieve success at the World Cup,” he noted.

The GFA has reportedly received applications from over 600 local and international coaches for the vacant position, with president Kurt Okraku confirming that a new head coach is expected to be announced within the next two weeks.

Hohoe United withdraw from Ghana Premier League https://www.adomonline.com/hohoe-united-withdraw-from-ghana-premier-league/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 15:44:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646960 Hohoe United have officially withdrawn from the ongoing Ghana Premier League season, the club announced following an emergency board meeting on Wednesday.

In a statement, the club confirmed that it has communicated its decision to the Ghana Football Association (GFA), bringing an abrupt end to its campaign.

The Volta Region side had endured a challenging season, sitting in the relegation zone with 30 points from 27 matches, facing a steep task to maintain their top-flight status.

Their difficulties were compounded by off-field issues, including a three-match home ban imposed after the club failed to provide adequate security during a previous incident at the Hohoe Sports Stadium.

Consequently, Hohoe United were forced to play most of their home fixtures on neutral grounds. Of their remaining seven matches, only one was scheduled at their home venue, with the other six effectively treated as away games.

Club officials said this situation created a significant competitive disadvantage, ultimately influencing their decision to withdraw from the league.

Black Stars slip in FIFA rankings amid poor run of form https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-slip-in-fifa-rankings-amid-poor-run-of-form/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 15:28:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646928 The Black Stars have dropped in the latest FIFA rankings released on April 1, highlighting growing concerns over the team’s recent performances.

The four-time African champions fell two places from 72nd in the previous rankings, continuing a period of inconsistent results on the international stage. Despite the global dip, Ghana remain 14th on the continent under the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rankings.

The latest setback follows a disappointing international window in Europe, where the Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats, losing 5–1 to Austria in Vienna on March 27 and falling 2–1 to Germany in Stuttgart three days later.

These results leave Ghana as the lowest-ranked side in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they will face strong opponents including England (4th), Croatia (11th), and an improving Panama (33rd).

The poor run has already prompted changes, with head coach Otto Addo relieved of his duties as the Ghana Football Association begins the search for a replacement.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars are set to regroup in May for a friendly against Mexico, followed by a match against Wales on June 2 as part of their final World Cup preparations. Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 18, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 28.

Black Stars legend Osei Kofi backs Kwesi Appiah’s potential return https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-legend-osei-kofi-backs-kwesi-appiahs-potential-return/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 15:15:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646924 Osei Kofi has thrown his support behind a potential return for Kwesi Appiah following the dismissal of Otto Addo.

The Ghana Football Association is currently searching for a new head coach after parting ways with the 50-year-old on Monday, opening the door for a fresh appointment ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

GFA President Kurt Okraku revealed that interest in the role has been overwhelming, with more than 600 applications submitted by both local and foreign coaches. A new manager is expected to be named within the next two weeks.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Osei Kofi insisted that Appiah’s deep understanding of the local game gives him a clear advantage over foreign candidates.

“If we bring a white coach, the person will have to first come and understudy, but for Kwesi Appiah, he knows our brand of football already. It will help Ghana if we go and beg him to come back,” he said.

The former forward also highlighted what he sees as the team’s core problem — a lack of unity despite an abundance of individual talent.

“God has blessed Ghana with a lot of talents. Right now we have players, but we don’t have a team,” he added.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in May for international friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2, as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana will be making their fifth appearance at the tournament and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time since their memorable run in 2010.

Chelsea make biggest loss in Premier League history https://www.adomonline.com/chelsea-make-biggest-loss-in-premier-league-history/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 14:35:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646914 Chelsea have announced the biggest pre-tax loss in Premier League history.

The £262m deficit for 2024-25 eclipses the £197.5m lost by Manchester City in 2011.

It comes despite Chelsea bringing in £490.9m in revenue, which the club says is the second highest total in their history.

In 2024-25 the Blues won the Uefa Conference League and Club World Cup, and finished fourth in the Premier League.

The club insist they remain compliant with financial regulations such as Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) which allow losses of £105m over three years.

Figures used to calculate this are different to the pure pre-tax loss.

Chelsea have spent more than £1bn on players since BlueCo tookover in 2022, signing a raft of younger players on long-term contracts.

Uefa fined the club £26.7m at the start of the season for breaching squad‑cost ratio rules and is also monitoring them over a three‑year period.

Sources have told BBC Sport that the reported losses include fines – among them the £10.75m Premier League sanction relating to agent payments made under Roman Abramovich’s ownership – as well as write‑offs in the accounts for high‑profile players such as Raheem Sterling, who was released, and Mykhailo Mudryk, who is being investigated over a failed drugs test.

Chelsea believe income will be at record levels in their next accounts, with an extra £85m earned from winning the Club World Cup, plus about £80m in television revenue from the Champions League.

The loss is less than the £355m quoted on Uefa’s benchmarking report last month.

That figure is understood to be a result of sales between two clubs in a multi-club model being excluded, with Chelsea having the same owners as French outfit Strasbourg.

Chelsea also revealed their women’s team lost £17.1m in 2024-25, with revenue at £21.3m.

What Chelsea need to do to stop the losses

It is important to note that Chelsea have not yet released their full accounts, which will soon be published at Companies House and are expected to provide a more detailed picture.

The only information currently available is from the statement made by Chelsea on Wednesday., external

“People ask whether Chelsea are a football club or a hedge‑fund experiment. I don’t think these accounts offer any clearer answer. We are still waiting to see the full picture on Companies House,” said football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

He said the figures highlighted the importance of Champions League football to a club that is currently sixth in the league.

He added: “For every one pound you receive from broadcasting [in the Champions League], you only get 11p in the Conference League, and it is much harder for the marketing department to sell a hospitality box for a match against the second‑best team in Denmark than when Barcelona come to town.”

There are also concerns that Stamford Bridge is beginning to look dated, leaving Chelsea at risk of falling behind their rivals, particularly with new Premier League squad-cost ratio rules coming into force this summer.

These replace PSR and allow clubs to spend 85% of their total revenues on squad-related costs.

“Chelsea have only a 40,000‑capacity stadium and are around half of Manchester United’s size, and probably £50-60m behind others,” Maguire added.

“With the introduction of the new squad‑cost ratio rules, it is really important for clubs to boost revenue wherever they can.

“Chelsea are simply behind their rivals, with less to spend on players – and that will take its toll over time.”

Maguire agreed that it was unlikely Chelsea would breach Premier League regulations.

Chelsea made a £128.4m profit last year – almost entirely due to the sale of their women’s team to themselves, a loophole that has since been closed by the league.

It means pre-tax losses over the past three years are about £220m in total, but Maguire said that Chelsea would have needed to submit the losses accounted for under PSR by 31 December.

“The lack of any news suggests the league is satisfied with their PSR figures,” Maguire said.

Kumasi to host 3rd edition of Democracy Cup https://www.adomonline.com/kumasi-to-host-3rd-edition-of-democracy-cup/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 10:03:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646717 The third edition of the Democracy Cup was officially launched on Tuesday at Parliament House, the main event will take place in Kumasi on August 30, featuring an expanded lineup of activities aimed at deepening the competition’s social impact.

The launch drew parliamentarians, diplomats, sponsors, former players, and members of the Ghana Supporters Union, officially kicking off a series of events leading to the tournament.

Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei highlighted the competition’s potential to address gender inequality.

“As a woman in leadership, I’m particularly encouraged by the inclusive potential of this initiative. Sports, when intentionally structured, can be a powerful tool for promoting gender equity and youth empowerment. I urge that future editions actively incorporate women’s themes,” she said.

Majority Chief Whip Rockson Dafeamekpor emphasised the tournament’s role in bringing citizens closer to governance.

“Speaker, parliaments across the globe have been deficient in bridging the gap between the people and the institution of parliament. This creates a persistent perception gap between parliament and the citizenry, especially the youth who are the future leaders of our nations. Most young people, therefore, see governance as distant, complex, and most times inaccessible. The Democracy Cup, therefore, is a well-calculated and thought-through intervention that seeks to bridge this gap,” he noted.

The 2026 edition promises to build on past successes, combining sport with civic engagement to inspire a new generation of informed and empowered Ghanaians.

Decision to sack Otto Addo was made after humiliating defeat to Austria – GFA https://www.adomonline.com/decision-to-sack-otto-addo-was-made-after-humiliating-defeat-to-austria-gfa/ Wed, 01 Apr 2026 07:07:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2646700 A member of the Ghana Football Association Executive Council, Frederick Acheampong, has disclosed that the decision to relieve Otto Addo of his duties as Black Stars head coach was made immediately following the team’s heavy defeat to Austria.

Ghana’s senior national team kicked off their March international window with a friendly at Vienna’s Ernst-Happel-Stadion last Friday as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, they suffered a crushing 5-1 loss to Ralf Rangnick’s side.

A subsequent 2-1 defeat against Germany in Stuttgart on Monday prompted the GFA to announce that the 50-year-old coach would step down. Acheampong clarified, however, that Addo’s fate had already been sealed after the Austrian loss.

“Irrespective of the outcome of the Germany match, Otto Addo was going to be sacked,” Acheampong told Kessben FM.

“The decision was formulated after the Austria match; we were just buying time,” he added.

Addo, who guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup, faced criticism for inconsistent performances, particularly against stronger opponents.

Looking ahead, the Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in May for friendlies against Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2 as part of their World Cup preparations.

Ghana, making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010.
