Gunners boss Mikel Arteta had called for the supporters to bring the energy to produce one of the stadium’s greatest ever nights heading into the contest, but the crowd were silenced on four minutes when a slick attack saw Dembele fire in his 32nd goal of the season for club and country via the far post.

Desire Doue and Marquinhos both had chances to double PSG’s advantage while at the other end Gabriel Martinelli was denied by a magnificent save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Gunners improved following the interval with Mikel Merino’s header being chalked off by VAR for offside and Donnarumma again producing heroics to tip Leandro Trossard’s effort past the post.

PSG substitutes Bradley Barcola and Goncalo Ramos then blew late chances to make it two, but the defeat still leaves Arteta’s men with it all to do heading into next week’s second leg.

Arsenal will now host Bournemouth in the Premier League before visiting the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

Kurt Okraku tipped for future CAF Presidency https://www.adomonline.com/kurt-okraku-tipped-for-future-caf-presidency/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 17:52:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529786 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, believes Kurt Okraku has the potential to rise to the presidency of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) if he remains committed and focused in his new role.

Okraku was appointed Second Vice President of CAF over the weekend during an Executive Committee meeting held in Accra.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe commended the GFA President for his elevation and urged him to prioritize CAF’s broader objectives over personal ambition.

He cautioned, however, that any deviation from this path could jeopardize his progress.

“I think it’s good news for Ghana soccer. Like Kwasi Nyantakyi, who raised Ghana’s image to a very high level within CAF and FIFA circles, I believe if Kurt really works hard, he might even become the CAF President,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe stated.

“Integrity and hard work will determine whether he can reach the CAF seat and eventually the FIFA level.”

He emphasized that integrity and diligence would be key to Okraku’s advancement, potentially even to roles at the global level within FIFA.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe also called on Okraku to use his new position to champion the interests of both Ghanaian and African football, while creating opportunities for more Ghanaians to assume leadership roles within the continental body.

Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe

Reflecting on the impact of former GFA President Kwasi Nyantakyi, he noted that despite his eventual controversies, Nyantakyi laid a strong foundation for Ghanaian football administrators on the African stage.

“My successor, Kwasi Nyantakyi — if he hadn’t encountered difficulties — would have been in very high positions, not only in Africa but globally. He left an indelible mark at CAF, and that has paved the way for Kurt,” he explained.

“Kwasi performed excellently; he knew football. I worked with him and can testify to his knowledge. His achievements pushed Ghana forward, and Kurt is now benefiting from that legacy.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe concluded by advising Okraku to lead with fairness, transparency, and firmness, ensuring that his influence benefits football locally, continentally, and globally.

“I pray that Kurt does everything properly — be firm and fair — and ensures that football is served not only in Africa but around the world,” he said.

Kurt Okraku currently also serves as the WAFU Zone B President.

Kurt Okraku resigns as WAFU Zone B President after CAF appointment https://www.adomonline.com/kurt-okraku-resigns-as-wafu-zone-b-president-after-caf-appointment/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 17:51:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529825 President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has officially stepped down as President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B.

The decision follows his recent appointment as the 2nd Vice-President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the weekend in Accra, a role that comes with expanded continental responsibilities.

Balancing this new position alongside his ongoing duties at the GFA prompted Okraku to relinquish his WAFU position, ensuring dedicated leadership across all roles.

Reports suggest that Mr. Okraku’s resignation is a strategic move to allow him to fully concentrate on his new role at CAF while creating space for new leadership within WAFU Zone B.

During his time at the helm of WAFU Zone B, Okraku led several key initiatives, notably the establishment of youth competitions aimed at nurturing talent across member countries.

Reflecting on his tenure, Okraku expressed appreciation for the support he received from the WAFU team and reaffirmed his continued commitment to advancing football development in West Africa, despite shifting to a broader continental focus.

His departure opens the door for new leadership to build on the foundations he laid, guiding WAFU Zone B into its next chapter of growth.

Why I left Hearts of Oak – Samuel Boadu opens up https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-left-hearts-of-oak-samuel-boadu-opens-up/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 17:50:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529790 Former Hearts of Oak head coach Samuel Boadu has shed light on the reasons behind his unexpected departure from the club, despite enjoying strong support from fans.

Boadu, who previously managed Medeama SC, guided Hearts to a Ghana Premier League title and two consecutive FA Cup triumphs during his tenure. Under his leadership, the Phobians claimed five trophies in just 18 months—a remarkable achievement by any standard.

However, a dip in form led to tensions between Boadu and the club’s management.

Speaking on The BKB Show, he revealed that a lack of appreciation from key figures within the club made it difficult for him to continue.

“Honestly, I can’t fully explain why I left. Maybe the bad run influenced some opinions, but even then, I had just won the FA Cup,” Boadu, who is now the head coach of Berekum Chelsea, said. “Some members of management didn’t appreciate what I achieved. It became a heavy burden. So, to allow peace for Togbe and the club, I decided to step aside.”

Despite the circumstances surrounding his exit, Boadu expressed deep admiration for Hearts’ Board Chairman, Togbe Afede XIV, with whom he shared a close personal relationship.

“I often mentioned Togbe’s name after matches, and many didn’t understand why. He’s more like a father and brother to me. His guidance went beyond football; he advised me on personal matters too. Togbe is a good man. If it were just him at Hearts, I would have stayed for 50 years,” he added.

Liverpool Legend urges Club to sign Mohammed Kudus https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-legend-urges-club-to-sign-mohammed-kudus/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 17:50:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529798 Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has urged the club to consider making a move for Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Murphy’s suggestion comes on the heels of Liverpool’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur—a result that sealed the 2024/25 Premier League title with four games to spare.

Speaking to the BBC, Murphy identified Kudus as a potential replacement for Darwin Núñez, Federico Chiesa, and Diogo Jota—three players who are widely expected to leave Anfield this offseason.

“Kudus is robust, skilful, and can play as a No.10 or on either wing. He is super strong and has great pace,” Murphy said.

Despite a somewhat underwhelming season in the Premier League, the 24-year-old West Ham United midfielder remains in demand. He has attracted interest from top European clubs as well as teams in the Saudi Pro League.

Kudus recently netted his first league goal of 2025 during West Ham’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton.

So far this season, he has contributed four goals and three assists across 31 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers.

Player exodus affecting Ghana Premier League – Maxwell Konadu https://www.adomonline.com/player-exodus-affecting-ghana-premier-league-maxwell-konadu/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 17:49:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529727 Former Asante Kotoko head coach Maxwell Konadu has cited the continuous departure of top players as a major reason behind the Ghana Premier League’s dwindling fortunes.

Once considered a giant in African football, the Ghanaian top-flight has seen its brightest talents leave season after season — an issue Konadu attributes to inadequate investment in the local game.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, the former Black Stars assistant coach drew a sharp contrast between Ghana and South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), highlighting that better salaries and superior infrastructure in South Africa are crucial to retaining players.

“The difference here is that with Ghanaian players, once you score a few goals, you are gone the next season. It’s not like that in South Africa because they pay them good money,” Konadu, who recently coached South African side Black Leopards, said.

“The players there are relaxed and not in a hurry to travel to Europe because they enjoy what they are doing at home.”

Konadu stressed that while players may personally benefit from moves overseas, their departures weaken the domestic competition and stifle the league’s growth.

He also emphasized the critical role of infrastructure in strengthening a football league, pointing to South Africa’s modern facilities as a major factor behind the PSL’s competitiveness.

“The South African league is very competitive. Clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates are always in the CAF Champions League,” he pointed out.

“Good infrastructure leads to beautiful football, and it helps their league a lot.”

Calling for urgent reforms, Konadu urged greater private sector involvement to help revive Ghanaian football.

“Until companies are encouraged to invest in our league, we will continue to struggle against countries such as South Africa,” he warned.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo reminded of rules by FA after revealing shirt with religious message https://www.adomonline.com/liverpools-cody-gakpo-reminded-of-rules-by-fa-after-revealing-shirt-with-religious-message/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 12:54:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530118 Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo will be reminded by the Football Association (FA) about the organisation’s rules after displaying a religious message on his shirt during his side’s win over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Gakpo scored Liverpool’s third goal in the 5-1 win as the club sealed a 20th top-flight title.

The Netherlands international fired past Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario in the 34th minute and took off his shirt in celebration, revealing a vest with the message, “I belong to Jesus” on the front. It bore resemblance to the shirt worn by former Ballon d’Or winner Kaka, which displayed the same message, after his Milan team defeated Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final.

Gakpo, who also wore the shirt in the title celebrations after the game, was booked for removing his jersey.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) laws of the game — which the FA follows — prohibit player’s equipment from containing “any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.”

“The player and/or the team will be sanctioned by the competition organiser, national football association or by FIFA,” IFAB adds.

In December, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi was reminded by the FA about the organisation’s rules after twice displaying a religious message on his rainbow captain’s armband.

The rainbow laces campaign, an initiative run by the Premier League in partnership with LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall to promote equality, diversity and LGBTQ+ acceptance, sees the league’s captains wear a rainbow armband during matches, though this is not mandatory.

Nineteen of the 20 captains wore the armband — Ipswich Town confirmed that Sam Morsy chose not to wear it due to religious reasons — including Guehi. Against Newcastle United on November 30, Guehi wrote the words, “I love Jesus” on the armband and three days later against Ipswich  Town displayed the words “Jesus loves you”. “I think the message was pretty clear to be honest,” Guehi told Sky Sports News at the time. “It was a message of love, of truth as well and a message of inclusivity, so I think it speaks for itself.”

The England international, along with Palace, was contacted by the FA to remind him of the rules. Neither was formally charged.

Real Madrid’s Rudiger has knee surgery https://www.adomonline.com/real-madrids-rudiger-has-knee-surgery/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 10:00:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530091 Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger faces a long spell on the sidelines after having knee surgery.

The Germany international was forced off in extra time on Saturday as Real lost the Copa del Rey final to Barcelona and was later diagnosed with a partial tear of the external meniscus in his left knee.

Real did not give a timescale for his recovery but Spanish media reports say he could be out for between six and eight weeks, which would rule him out of the rest of the domestic season and make him doubtful for the Club World Cup, which starts on 15 June.

Germany are also competing in the Nations League finals, which take place between 4 and 8 June.

In a post on social media, Rudiger said he had been playing in pain for more than seven months and that surgery was unavoidable.

“Now I’m finally pain-free again, and the surgery was a success. Thanks to the medical team,” he said.

“[There are] two big tournaments with the Nations League and the Club World Cup in front of me, but I have to look from week to week. I will do everything I can to make it happen.”

Rudiger, 32,” is already facing a long ban after being sent off for throwing an object, reportedly an ice cube, at the referee during the Barcelona defeat.

Under article 101 of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) disciplinary code, which covers “mild violence” towards referees, Rudiger could receive a suspension of between four and 12 matches.

However, if his actions are deemed more serious, he could face a ban of anything between three months to a year.

Rudiger has since apologised for the incident, which occurred after he had been substituted, saying there was “definitely no excuse” for his behaviour.

Team-mate Lucas Vazquez, who had also been substituted, was sent off too as both players angrily reacted to a foul given against Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle.

Real’s England midfielder Jude Bellingham, 21, was also later sent off for dissent.

Jules Kounde scored in the 116th minute to secure a 3-2 win for Barcelona in a thriller.

Eddie Nketiah confirms readiness to play for Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/eddie-nketiah-confirms-readiness-to-play-for-ghana/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 09:50:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529866 Crystal Palace forward Eddie Nketiah has expressed his willingness to play for Ghana at the international level, following years of uncertainty with England’s senior national team.

Born in Lewisham to Ghanaian parents, Nketiah has long been on the radar of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Though he represented England at every youth level and even received a senior call-up in 2023 for matches against Scotland and Ukraine, the former Arsenal striker has struggled to secure a consistent place in Gareth Southgate’s squad.

Speaking on The Beautiful Game podcast, Nketiah signaled a shift in perspective regarding his international future.

“When I was younger, representing England was an option after progressing through the youth system. But if Ghana invites me, then I’ll be there.”

The 25-year-old has endured a challenging season at Crystal Palace, managing just one goal and one assist across 25 appearances.

Despite his club struggles, Nketiah’s potential switch in allegiance could provide a timely boost for the Black Stars, who are still seeking reliable options up front ahead of key international fixtures.

‘I have to think of something special’ – the story of Salah’s selfie https://www.adomonline.com/i-have-to-think-of-something-special-the-story-of-salahs-selfie/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 05:05:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529724 Mohamed Salah’s selfie celebration during Liverpool’s Premier League title-clinching win over Tottenham Hotspur has become an iconic moment.

The Egyptian scored the Reds’ fourth goal in Sunday’s 5-1 victory at Anfield and, after celebrating his strike, borrowed a phone from a staff member before taking a photograph of himself and the cheering Liverpool fans behind him.

But some have asked could it have been a marketing idea, because the phone Salah used is made by one of Liverpool’s sponsors.

“At the beginning of the season I always take selfies with players [who score], so for this one I said ‘OK, I have to think of something special because it’s a picture that’s going to be there forever’,” Salah told BBC Sport.

Salah, 32, has frequently posted selfies with Reds team-mates on social media, while his recent two-year contract extension announcement included a self-taken photograph.

Initially observers thought Salah had taken the phone off a fan in the crowd, but it was a Liverpool staff member located behind the advertising hoardings in front of the Kop.

The photograph, which Salah and Liverpool posted on their social media accounts, has millions of likes and views.

But it has courted some controversy with observers wondering if it was a natural celebration, or an advert for Google Pixel, an official partner of the club.

In response, others have pointed out they could not know Salah would have scored – and none of the first three goalscorers did this celebration – although it was his 33rd goal of the season so not much of a surprise.

Various Liverpool players have taken part in adverts for Google this season on social media and TV.

Post-match Salah took selfies again – which Google Pixel posted on social media.

Salah could have been booked for delaying the restart of play with the celebration, but referee Thomas Bramall kept his cards in his pocket.

Team-mate Cody Gakpo had earlier been shown a yellow card for celebrating his goal to make it 3-1 by taking off his shirt to reveal an ‘I belong to Jesus’ T-shirt.

BBC Sport has asked Liverpool and the Football Association (FA) for comment on the Salah selfie story.

The FA has rules around advertising on kits and betting companies – but there do not appear to be specific rules prohibiting something like this incident, even if it was intentional marketing.

Despite all the hype, Salah is far from the first footballer to celebrate a goal with a selfie.

Perhaps the highest-profile one until now was Roma forward Francesco Totti doing so after scoring in a 2015 derby against Lazio.

Then 38, he was handed a phone by one of Roma’s coaches before taking the photo in front of the club’s fans.

But plenty of other players have done it too.

Mario Balotelli also made headlines for a selfie, filming his goal celebration with his team-mates in Marseille’s win over Saint-Etienne in 2019.

A beautiful story but we want much more – Arteta https://www.adomonline.com/a-beautiful-story-but-we-want-much-more-arteta/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 04:59:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529721 Arsenal’s run to the Champions League semi-finals has been a “beautiful story” but the Gunners “want much more”, says manager Mikel Arteta as they prepare to host Paris St-Germain.

Arteta said Tuesday’s first leg (20:00 BST) is “one of the biggest games the Emirates Stadium has seen”, and called on fans to “play every ball together”.

Arsenal beat reigning champions Real Madrid 5-1 on aggregate in the quarter-finals and will now face French side PSG, who they beat 2-0 in the league phase in October.

The Gunners, who have never won the Champions League, last reached the semi-finals in 2009 where they suffered a 4-1 aggregate defeat by Manchester United.

Managed by Arsene Wenger, they also lost the 2006 final to Barcelona.

“You feel [the weight of history],” said Arteta on the eve of the semi-final first leg.

“Especially because we have a lot of people who have worked at this club for many, many years and they’ve never been in this position. That tells you how unique and beautiful this is.

“We are making history. It’s a beautiful story right now – but we want much more.”

Arsenal’s season has been hampered by injuries to key players including Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Ben White.

They have won only one of their past four Premier League matches, which helped Liverpool clinch the title on Sunday with four games to spare.

But in Europe they have won six of their eight league-phase games and also beat PSV Eindhoven 9-3 on aggregate in the last 16 on their way to the semi-finals.

Arteta added: “The fact that we are here as one of the four best teams in Europe, it tells about the mindset, spirit and how much we really want it.”

His squad will be boosted by the return of Mikel Merino and White to training, but Arteta also challenged the Gunners faithful to create an even better atmosphere than in the 3-0 win against Real Madrid.

“I’m not exaggerating. Guys, bring your boots, your shorts and T-shirt and let’s play every ball together,” said Areta, who is eyeing his first major silverware at the club since the FA Cup in 2020.

“You want to do something special? That place has to be something special. Something we haven’t seen.”

We want to write a page in history – Luis Enrique

Image caption: Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Luis Enrique’s PSG in October

Paris St-Germain looked far from serious Champions League contenders when they lost to Arsenal in the league phase.

The Ligue 1 side only won once and lost three of their first five games in Europe before squeezing through to the knockout-phase play-offs in 15th place.

But Luis Enrique believes his side are “a more complete team” seven months on.

“I think there are some big differences [from the Arsenal defeat],” the PSG manager said.

“I watched that match again and saw our progress. I think we’re a better team and we’ve shown that throughout the competition.

“We had the toughest league phase. At first I thought it was detrimental, but in the end it was positive because it helped us progress.

“We are a more complete team and we now want to write a page in history.”

PSG, who were crowned domestic champions again this month, are aiming for a first Champions League title despite the exits of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar.

After beating fellow French club Brest 10-0 on aggregate in the play-offs, they overcame successive English opponents in Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Before the semi-final, Luis Enrique said he sees similarities between his side and Arteta’s Arsenal.

“They are built as a team with collective strength – you can see that from the way they attack and defend,” he said.

“They do everything together. Of course, they have some top-level players, just like we do, but they don’t rely on just one player. They have had injuries throughout the season but they continue to perform at a high level.”

The new deal follows the conclusion of a previous GH₵14 million agreement, which spanned four years.

During a media briefing at KGL’s head office in Accra, Executive Chairman of the KGL Group, Alex Apau Dadey, shared his enthusiasm about the renewed collaboration.

“I was glad that this came up for renewal,” he said.

“I spoke with the Minister, and we decided that this would be the right time to sit down and discuss it together with the GFA President. One assurance I can give is that we’ll support the leadership of the Sports Ministry.

“The Minister pushed us very hard to come on board, reminding us about our responsibility as corporate citizens, and Kurt’s stewardship has shown us that the resources will be put to good use.”

GFA President Kurt Okraku also expressed appreciation for KGL’s unwavering support.

“We appreciate your commitment to helping Ghana football progress beyond where it is now. We believe your investment will benefit not only the national team but the entire football ecosystem. We will ensure that the resources invested are put to good use.”

Referees and Match Commissioners withdraw services over unpaid allowances https://www.adomonline.com/referees-and-match-commissioners-withdraw-services-over-unpaid-allowances/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 15:31:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529539

The Concerned Referees and Match Commissioners of Ghana (CRAMCOG) have officially informed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of their decision to withdraw from officiating the remainder of the 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League season.

In a letter dated April 27, 2025, CRAMCOG expressed significant dissatisfaction over the persistent delays in the payment of their allowances. They argue that this ongoing issue reflects broader neglect of the welfare of match officials and poses a serious threat to the integrity of Ghanaian football.

The group highlighted the importance of maintaining the dignity and respect of referees and commissioners, noting that these elements are essential for preserving the credibility of the sport. They also warned that continued financial neglect could leave officials vulnerable to external pressures, compromising the fairness of league competitions.

“An empty sack cannot stand upright,” CRAMCOG stated, underscoring the serious challenges faced by referees and commissioners who are working without compensation.

The GFA is now under increasing pressure to address the issue swiftly and effectively, as the future of the domestic league is at stake. Ensuring fairness, respect, and integrity is key to maintaining the competition’s credibility.

Kurt Okraku’s presence at CAF will be positive for Ghana – Sports Minister https://www.adomonline.com/kurt-okrakus-presence-at-caf-will-be-positive-for-ghana-sports-minister/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 10:10:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529420 The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has commended Kurt Okraku following his appointment as the 2nd Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Okraku, who serves as the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), had his appointment announced by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe during a press conference in Accra on Saturday.

The appointment was made after Okraku was nominated by President Motsepe and subsequently approved by the CAF Executive Committee during their meeting.

Reacting to the news, Kofi Adams expressed his excitement, stating that the country expects even greater contributions from Okraku in his new role.

He also emphasized that Okraku’s position at CAF will have a positive impact on Ghana’s football landscape.

“We are expecting more from Kurt Okraku since he is the second person at CAF. I believe that with his presence there, there will be positive things for Ghana,” the Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

Having been elected unopposed to the CAF Executive Committee in March, Okraku’s appointment signifies his continued rise within the ranks of African football leadership.

He joins Faouzi Lekjaa, who takes over as the First Vice President, replacing Senegal FA President Augustine Senghor, while Okraku succeeds Ahmed Yahya as the 2nd Vice President.

Sports Minister commends Kurt Okraku’s leadership as GFA President https://www.adomonline.com/sports-minister-commends-kurt-okrakus-leadership-as-gfa-president/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 09:48:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529406 Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has expressed support for the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, praising his leadership despite the challenges faced by the national teams.

Okraku took over as GFA president in October 2019, succeeding Kwesi Nyantakyi. Under his leadership, the country’s football scene, particularly the Black Stars, has struggled to perform well.

The senior national team has failed to impress in recent international competitions, and their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) marked a significant low, as it was the first time in two decades they missed out on the tournament.

Despite these setbacks, Minister Adams believes Okraku’s administration has not been unsuccessful.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Adams acknowledged the difficulties within the football system but highlighted the progress made during Okraku’s tenure.

“As challenging as the football system has been, Kurt Okraku has not done badly. In all these circumstances, he has been able to write many wrongs,” he said.

He also shared insights from his frequent interactions with the GFA, noting their ongoing efforts to plan for the development of football in the country.

However, he pointed out that the primary challenge has been in the execution of these plans.

“I have had several engagements with the GFA, and I realise that they are always planning on how to develop the game, but the only challenge has been the implementation of it.

“There has been a plan to split the football system into a Southern and Northern belt, where talents will be developed. The GFA has developed Prampram, which is a good thing, and another thing has to do with the ‘Catch Them Young’ Referee initiative. This was done in silence, which is also good for our game.

“These young referees officiated the African School Championship, which is something we must be proud of.

“These are some of the things that CAF believes Ghana is doing right, which I believe also went in favour of Kurt Okraku getting that position,” he added.

While the Black Stars face challenges, the Black Queens have successfully qualified for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), and the Black Satellites will represent Ghana at the U-20 AFCON currently taking place in Egypt.

Patrice Motsepe has positive thoughts about Ghana Sports – Kofi Adams https://www.adomonline.com/patrice-motsepe-has-positive-thoughts-about-ghana-sports-kofi-adams/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 09:40:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529388 Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has praised Dr. Patrice Motsepe, the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), for his positive outlook on sports in Ghana.

The CAF leadership was in Accra over the weekend to attend the 2025 Africa School Championship, held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, after meeting with Dr. Motsepe, Kofi Adams expressed that the South African business tycoon holds Ghana in high regard when it comes to sports.

The Buem Constituency Member of Parliament revealed that the CAF president has encouraged Ghana to prioritize investment in grassroots sports.

“I believe apart from South Africa, where he comes from, the next country he loves is Ghana. He has good thoughts about Ghana in terms of football and beyond the game,” Adams stated.

“Despite showing a strong interest in football, he also has an interest in other sports, which is a good thing. He encouraged us to continue investing in other grassroots sports,” he added.

Dr. Motsepe also took time to visit former President John Mahama upon his arrival in Ghana over the weekend.

Both were chasing their own piece of history. Barcelona were trying to become the first team to claim back-to-back titles in the Champions League era while Inter were seeking a first European Cup final since 1972 and a first win in the competition since 1965.

It was a tie tinged with bitterness, with Inter boss Jose Mourinho going up against Guardiola, who had worked together at Barca but were now intense rivals.

It was a tie that defined Mourinho as a coach and ultimately saw him lead Inter to the Treble – the first Italian side to achieve such a feat – as they wrapped up the Serie A title, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.

And on 28 April 2010, he and Inter took a mighty leap towards that historic achievement.

Fifteen years on from the captivating second leg in Barcelona and with the two preparing to face each other in another Champions League semi-final, BBC Sport takes a look at the story of that fascinating tie.

The Special One v the king of tiki-taka

Tension had been brewing long before the players set foot on the pitch.

In the summer of 2008, Barcelona were looking for a new manager, having sacked 2006 Champions League winner Frank Rijkaard.

The choice was Mourinho or Guardiola, who had worked closely with the Portuguese during the 1990s when he was Sir Bobby Robson’s assistant and the Spain midfielder was Barca’s captain.

It was a position Mourinho had acquired having first started out as an interpreter for Robson at Sporting, before evolving into an assistant coach. He followed Robson to Porto then Barca.

But while in Catalonia, the Portuguese was disgruntled with his treatment.

He was nicknamed ‘the translator’ and felt he was not taken seriously.

When it came to Barca appointing a new coach a decade later, Mourinho – who by then boasted Champions League and Premier League titles on his CV – was shunned in favour of Guardiola, who had just finished his first year in management with Barca’s reserves.

It was a decision that did not sit well with Mourinho and had a profound impact on the way he would go on to set up his teams, sacrificing pretty football – like Guardiola’s tiki-taka – in favour of efficiency a solid defence.

Barca’s decision instigated a managerial rivalry between Mourinho and Guardiola that came to a head in 2010 in the tie and was later ramped up while the former was at Real Madrid.

‘The Translator’ overcomes Guardiola’s superstars

Mourinho’s ‘the translator’ nickname returned in mocking tribute in the build-up to the first leg at San Siro.

The feeling was that Mourinho did not stand a chance against a Guardiola team at the height of its power, having won the Treble the previous season.

Already rife with drama and a gripping narrative, the first leg was played under a cloud of ash following the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull.

It meant Barca could not fly to Italy and instead had to take a 10-hour bus journey.

Whether that had any bearing on the match is impossible to know. But it certainly gave an already intriguing tie an air of theatre.

“When you get to the knockouts against a team like Barcelona, you have to win your match at home,” said Mourinho in a new BBC Sport documentary – How to Win the Champions League: Jose Mourinho.

That is of course easier said than done with Guardiola’s illustrious squad including Lionel Messi, Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who Barca had acquired from Inter in a swap deal that season with striker Samuel Eto’o.

“Before the first leg, Mourinho told me ‘you’re going to play left-back and you will mark Messi’,” recalls former Inter defender Javier Zanetti in the documentary.

“I knew Messi from the Argentina team and he was the best player in the world. I followed Messi around and in every zone he went into, two of my team-mates came to pressure him to deny him space to make a difference.”

Mourinho’s tactics worked and Inter bounced back from an early Pedro goal as Wesley Sneijder levelled before the break then Maicon and Diego Milito assured a 3-1 victory at a rocking San Siro.

“It could have been more. A fantastic performance,” said Mourinho.

‘The most beautiful defeat of my career’

So to the second leg.

With a two-goal advantage to protect, Inter needed to produce a defensive masterclass to prevent Guardiola’s men, backed by their expectant supporters, overturning the deficit.

The players emerged from the Nou Camp tunnel to be greeted by a banner printed simply with the word ‘remuntada’ – comeback in Catalan.

“I think that put the pressure on them [Barcelona] because everyone believed they could do it,” said Zanetti.

Mourinho’s style of play is synonymous with a solid defence, and it was something he relied on that night in Spain. That and a number of top, experienced players.

“At Inter, my bench was full of top players at the end of their careers. [Ivan] Cordoba, [Francesco] Toldo, [Marco] Materazzi, [Dejan] Stankovic. They were not my first choices, but they were my big allies,” Mourinho said.

He recalled a speech made before the match by defender Cordoba in the dressing room.

“He was saying ‘this is my dream, this is my last opportunity. I am not playing because of him [Mourinho]. He decided to put me on the bench and decided to play you. So you are going to play for me’,” Mourinho said.

“When you have this kind of person on the bench and in the dressing room, your work becomes much more easy. I knew that they would do anything for me and I would have done anything for them.”

Inter’s task became much harder in the 28th minute when midfielder Thiago Motta was sent off for catching Busquets in the face as he raised a hand when defending the ball.

Busquets rolled around on the ground with his hands clutching his face, stopping momentarily to move his hands in a ‘peekaboo’ gesture to ensure the referee had produced a red card.

The Brazilian’s reaction following the dismissal, man-handling Busquets in protest, only fanned the flames of a high-octane encounter.

“We went there with a strategy to try to control, to try and bite in counter-attack,” said Mourinho.

“After 20 minutes or so Motta is sent off. People are sometimes afraid to speak about it, I am never afraid to speak about it – the referee’s decisions are always crucial.”

Down to 10 men and with a 90,000-strong crowd willing their opponents on, Inter sat deep and flooded their defensive areas while the hosts’ passing game was typically brilliant but failed to find the gaps.

“During half-time he [Mourinho] was still convinced we would reach the final. His confidence was contagious,” said Zanetti.

And, having already dubbed himself The Special One, Mourinho felt confident he had his tactics spot on.

“To play with 10 players against Barcelona, it becomes epic. You need heroes. You need to have the best out of everybody,” said Mourinho.

“I think I was brilliant in the way I organised the team. We defended with everything we had. We defended with hearts, with souls. We gave absolutely everything.”

High-pressure tactics and gamesmanship continually frustrated Barcelona as almost the entire second half was played in Inter’s defensive third. But Guardiola’s team of superstars probed without success.

That was until, with six minutes of normal time remaining, Barcelona broke the Italians’ backline for virtually the first time as Gerard Pique collected Xavi’s pass, turned inside Cordoba’s challenge and slid home.

Barca’s tails were up and so was the crowd. One more and they would level the tie and progress to the final thanks to their away goal in Milan.

Bojan Krkic thought he had secured victory after he broke free in the Inter box and lashed into the roof of the net in injury time.

But the Nou Camp’s joy was short-lived as the referee gave handball against Yaya Toure in the build-up and the match finished 1-0, with Inter progressing to the final to face Bayern Munich.

The full-time whistle had barely sounded before Mourinho sprinted onto the pitch, one arm in the air, to celebrate with his players.

Barcelona chose that moment to put the sprinklers on.

An attempt to annoy the Inter players and stop them from celebrating on the pitch? Perhaps. For Inter, it did not matter.

“It was the most beautiful defeat of my career,” said Mourinho.

“The fact that we played with 10 men for so long, makes it absolutely incredible. If I could choose one of my most emotional performances, in a career of more than 20 years, I would choose that one.”

Bibiani GoldStars not giving up on GPL title after vision FC defeat https://www.adomonline.com/bibiani-goldstars-not-giving-up-on-gpl-title-after-vision-fc-defeat/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 08:53:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529380 Bibiani GoldStars head coach, Frimpong Manso, remains confident in his side’s title ambitions for the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League, despite a setback over the weekend.

The Miners were hoping to extend their lead at the top of the league standings but fell to a 2-0 defeat against Vision FC during Matchday 29 at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.

Despite the loss, GoldStars still sit atop the league with 53 points, holding a five-point advantage with just five matches remaining in the season.

Head coach Frimpong Manso, however, is undeterred and maintains his optimism for the title race.

“We have four games left, three of them at home. We know it won’t be easy, but we’re motivated to push harder,” he said after the game.

“Even for the away game, we’ll fight for something. We’re still on course to win the league,” he added.

Vision FC sealed the victory with a late goal from Edmond Asante, who struck four minutes before full-time to secure a crucial win for Nana Kweku Agyemang’s side.

GoldStars will look to bounce back in their next match when they host struggling Karela United at DUN Park on Sunday for Matchday 30.

We will not be relegated – Vision FC Coach https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-not-be-relegated-vision-fc-coach/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 08:44:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529363 Vision FC head coach Nana Kweku Agyemang is confident that his team will retain their Premier League status by the end of the season.

The debutant club strengthened their survival prospects with a solid 2-0 victory over league leaders Bibiani GoldStars in the Matchday 29 fixture at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex on Sunday.

This vital win has pushed Vision FC further away from the relegation zone, raising hopes of preserving their top-flight status in their inaugural season.

“I’ve said it over and over again, we will not be relegated. The boys will rise to the occasion. We’ll stay in the league, and next season, you’ll see a better side,” Agyemang said after the game.

A late goal from Edmond Asante sealed the victory for Vision FC, who now climb to 14th in the standings, surpassing Accra Lions. Meanwhile, GoldStars’ lead at the top was reduced to just two points.

Vision FC, with 33 points, will now focus on their upcoming match against Medeama SC.

CAF President vows to tackle rising stadium violence across Africa https://www.adomonline.com/caf-president-vows-to-tackle-rising-stadium-violence-across-africa/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 08:28:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529333 President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has vowed to tackle the growing issue of match violence and hooliganism at stadiums across the continent.

Incidents of violence at African football matches have escalated in recent months, tragically culminating in several deaths, including a deadly incident in Guinea last December.

Additionally, more than 50 lives were reportedly lost during violent clashes between Esperança and Mamelodi Sundowns fans at a CAF Champions League fixture in South Africa.

Addressing the media in Accra on Friday, Dr. Motsepe reaffirmed CAF’s unwavering commitment to making stadiums safe spaces for fans.

“CAF is steadfastly committed to ensuring that stadiums are safe spaces where our football spectators, fans, and supporters can feel comfortable and secure, including from a health perspective,” he stated.

Dr. Motsepe emphasized that the Confederation considers any injury — and particularly any loss of life — at a football venue as wholly unacceptable.

“To have a single fan injured at a stadium is something that we do not want to experience under any circumstances,” he said.

“And worse still, to have a single fan lose their life is something that we can never take enough precautionary measures against.”

He further revealed that CAF is currently conducting an extensive review of international best practices to enhance stadium safety across Africa.

“The starting point is to look at what other countries are doing,” Motsepe explained.

“We are assessing where and in which stadiums the safest environments have been created for spectators.”

He added that the CAF Secretariat is spearheading efforts to consult with safety experts in Europe and elsewhere to adopt proven strategies for crowd management and matchday security.

“There is an ongoing process. The determination and commitment are very deep and steadfast,” he assured.

‘No-one expected this’ – how Slot guided Liverpool to the title https://www.adomonline.com/no-one-expected-this-how-slot-guided-liverpool-to-the-title/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 07:51:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529294 “If you had asked Liverpool fans back in August would their team win the Premier League, most would have said no,” says former Reds goalkeeper Sander Westerveld.

Jurgen Klopp was always going to be the hardest of acts to follow as manager.

Liverpool supporters were understandably worried about the future when the charismatic German, whose force of personality and success gave him iconic status, announced in January 2024 he was leaving at the end of that season.

Who would undertake the seemingly impossible task of replacing Klopp? Would Liverpool tread water or even go backwards for a season or two while his successor settled in?

“Klopp was a sort of god who changed the club – not just on the pitch but the whole atmosphere,” says Westerveld.

Former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso, who had taken Bayer Leverkusen to the brink of a first Bundesliga title, was strongly linked with a return before announcing he was staying in Germany. That paved the way for Arne Slot’s appointment.

“At that moment I didn’t even think about Arne,” says his fellow Dutchman Westerveld, who has remained friends with Slot since their playing days at Sparta Rotterdam in 2007-08.

“Nobody in England knew an awful lot about him. Everybody who knows football said it was going to be a huge task and that this was an unknown coach who comes from the Netherlands.”

Yet the transition from Klopp to Slot has been seamless, culminating in Liverpool winning the title for a record-equalling 20th time.

With 25 wins in 34 games and just two defeats, Slot’s side have made top spot their own and have looked down on the rest of the Premier League since 2 November.

And now they are champions – with four games to spare – for just the second time since 1989-90.

Slot, who ruled himself out of the running to become the next Spurs boss while at Feyenoord in May 2023, has joined an elite band of bosses in the Premier League era to have delivered the title in their first season in charge.

Jose Mourinho (2004-05) and Carlo Ancelotti (2009-10) both managed it at Chelsea before Manuel Pellegrini (2013-14) accomplished the feat at Manchester City. The last boss to do so before Slot was Antonio Conte – also at Chelsea – in 2016-17.

“Nobody expected this,” says Ian Doyle – chief Liverpool writer for the Liverpool Echo. “In terms of an achievement for a manager in his first season at Liverpool, it has to be right up there.”

Neil Atkinson, presenter and CEO of Liverpool fans’ podcast and website The Anfield Wrap, says: “I don’t think anyone wanted the new manager to come in and try to be a Jurgen Klopp tribute act.

“All Liverpool fans wanted was Slot to be himself – and that’s what he has been.”

Slot’s magic formula

In many ways, Slot’s main job has been to build on and improve the outstanding squad left behind by his predecessor, who averaged 80.33 points in his last three seasons at Anfield.

Three more victories would mean Liverpool break the 90-point barrier after Slot tightened the defence and brought more control to the midfield.

“They’ve amassed these points by winning when it’s hard, winning when it’s ugly, winning when the opposition have put up a fight,” adds Atkinson.

“Liverpool have managed to do that – none of their rivals have.”

While Federico Chiesa was the only addition to Slot’s squad for this season, the Dutch coach has improved players, including Ryan Gravenberch, who has grasped his opportunity at the base of Liverpool’s midfield after the club missed out on signing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

With 28 Premier League goals and 18 assists in 34 appearances – compared to 18 goals and 10 assists in 32 appearances in Klopp’s final season – Mohamed Salah’s figures under Slot have been seriously impressive.

Gravenberch’s Netherlands team-mate Cody Gakpo has provided 17 goals in all competitions in 2024-25, beating his tally from last season.

“In his first meeting with the players, Arne had all the data from the season they were champions in 2019-20 and all the data from the final season under Klopp,” adds Westerveld.

“Last season, compared to the title season, there were less sprints, the team was less effective. Instead of saying to the players, ‘come on, work hard’, he was telling them exactly what they had to do and needed to know showing them all the data.”

There have been tweaks off the field too, with Slot implementing a new routine for how his players build up to games.

Under Klopp, the day would begin later, but this season players have been at the training ground in Kirkby, about six and a half miles from Anfield, at 9.15am for breakfast.

Slot and his backroom team have introduced a process known as ‘body wake-up’, which involves breathing exercises before both training and matches.

Under Klopp, the Liverpool squad would stay together in a hotel before home games. That is no longer the case, with players allowed to remain at their own homes.

Training sessions have been longer than before but less intense to reduce injury risk, with fitness issues undermining several campaigns in recent years.

In addition, Slot has made key hires behind the scenes.

Ruben Peeters, a specialist in periodisation (the science of optimising training loads), followed Slot from Feyenoord, Dr Jonathan Power was promoted to director of medicine and performance, while Amit Pannu joined as a new first-team doctor.

Making friends and showing humility

Liverpool fans had plenty of time to get used to Slot before his first Premier League game in charge. There were three months between the Reds announcing him as their new head coach and the match at Ipswich on 17 August.

It helped that Klopp, after his final match in charge, urged supporters to sing with him ‘Arne Slot, na na na na na’ to the tune of Opus’ Live Is Life before the German waved goodbye to Anfield – a chant that has become more and more popular at the ground as the season has gone on.

“Before his first home game in front of 60,000, I asked Arne if he was nervous,” says Westerveld, who won the FA Cup, League Cup and Uefa Cup at Liverpool in 2000-01 under Gerard Houllier.

“He said: ‘Oh well, you know, I was manager of Feyenoord and we had a stadium of 50,000 so I’m used to that.’

“I said; ‘No, Arnie. No… this is Anfield, this is different.’ He was downplaying everything.

“Then I thought about it afterwards and Liverpool is perfect for him. He’s just a normal guy, down to earth, feet on the floor, very calm. For him everything is the same and he doesn’t change.

“He didn’t get carried away when Liverpool won 11 of the first 12 games, and he didn’t panic when they lost the League Cup final five days after going out of the Champions League.”

One banner that has become a regular feature in The Kop this season refers to ‘Arne’s Slot Machine’ – a nod towards his popularity with supporters young and old.

He has befriended Isaac Kearney – a Liverpool-obsessed seven-year-old, who was born with a rare condition known as Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, meaning he develops at a slower rate than other children his age.

When the club heard about Isaac’s story, they invited him, his mum Melissa and dad Alan, and older sister Florence to the training ground to meet the players.

They were told they might not see Slot as he was busy planning for a game.

“Isaac was walking past the manager’s office with Mo [Salah] and Virgil [van Dijk] and Isaac being Isaac shouted ‘Arne’ through the window at him,” Melissa recalls.

“Arne was in a meeting but came out to chat with Isaac. He was so genuine and down to earth. We sat down for lunch and Arne came over and was fist-bumping Isaac.

“Arne asked if he was having a nice day and Isaac told him he was still waiting to see Trent [Alexander-Arnold]. Arne said: ‘I’m going to take you to meet him right now.'”

Before Liverpool’s home game with Southampton in March, Slot also name-checked Isaac in his pre-match news conference.

Asked how he would cope with serving a touchline ban, the Reds boss said he would be sitting in the stand close to his friend Isaac.

Slot comes across as likeable, approachable and intelligent in interviews, although there were occasions in his early days when he struggled to grasp the local dialect.

Before Liverpool’s Champions League game with Bologna in October, a local reporter asked if preparations for a big European game were any different to a domestic match.

“That was a bit of Scouse,” said Slot, struggling to understand the local accent before turning to Tony Barrett – director of first-team communications – for help.

“He’s relaxed into the job,” adds Doyle. “Anyone who has seen his press conferences, he doesn’t mind a laugh and a joke. He’s mentioned in the past that his dad reads the newspapers.”

Arend Slot made the headlines in January when Arne revealed his dad was not impressed with the way the Reds performed in the 2-1 Champions League win over Lille.

“When I called him after the game he says: ‘Ah, it wasn’t as exciting as other games of Liverpool,'” said Arne at the time.

Doyle adds: “I haven’t seen him snap in press conferences but if he doesn’t believe a question is fair he’ll make a point of addressing that fact.

“He always says ‘this season we’ve basically got what we deserved’ whether it’s after a win over Real Madrid in the Champions League or defeat by Newcastle in the League Cup final.”

Westerveld was at Goodison Park in February when Slot was shown a red card after a dramatic Merseyside derby ended 2-2, with Everton equalising in the 98th minute.

“He looked really angry when he walked off the pitch and then he saw me and straight away he smiled,” he adds.

“It’s like I said before… he doesn’t get too down. He’s exactly the same as he was in his first coaching role at Cambuur.”

Away from football in the Netherlands, Slot used to relax by playing golf with Westerveld, but since moving to Liverpool he keeps fit playing racquet sport padel with his backroom staff at the training ground.

“Go home, eat, take the computer out, watch the training session back, prepare for the next meeting,” said Slot – whose family have remained in the Netherlands – when asked what he does after training.

“He’s clearly a brilliant coach… and a serious minded person,” adds Atkinson.

“His reaction to getting knocked out of the Champions League by Paris St-Germain wasn’t to bemoan the referee or blame injuries.

“He said it was the best game he had ever coached in. He has shown genuine humility while simultaneously having a real sense of confidence in himself, his coaching staff and players.”

‘I didn’t expect it to be so easy for him’

Not since they were champions in the early 1980s have Liverpool won back-to-back league titles.

So will they build on this season’s incredible success?

While there has been no need for a rebuild in 2024-25, Slot is expected to be active in the transfer market to ensure Liverpool are in a strong position next season.

Although Salah has signed a new two-year contract and captain Virgil van Dijk has also committed his future, England international Alexander-Arnold is expected to move to Real Madrid.

Reported Liverpool targets include Newcastle’s Sweden forward Alexander Isak and Bournemouth’s Hungary left-back Milos Kerkez.

“I refuse to believe Slot will allow standards to slip next season,” adds Atkinson. “I think they’ll break 80 points again – and if you do that you have every chance of being in the conversation for the title.”

Westerveld will be at Anfield on 25 May, when Liverpool host Crystal Palace on the final day of the season, to see his friend and former team-mate show off the Premier League trophy.

“To come from coaching in the Netherlands to the Premier League… I didn’t expect it to be so easy for him to adapt,” he admits.

“At the start of the season I used to send him a message to congratulate him after a win. Then I sent him a message saying, ‘I’m not going to congratulate anymore because it’s getting boring’.”

Liverpool crowned Premier League champions with thumping win over Tottenham https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-crowned-premier-league-champions-with-thumping-win-over-tottenham/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 18:00:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529242 Liverpool clinched the Premier League title at Anfield, easing past Spurs 5-1 as they capped off a remarkable season with a memorable afternoon.

Liverpool have now matched Manchester United’s tally of 20 League titles and have won two Premier League titles, after securing their first in 2020 under Jurgen Klopp.

Arne Slot’s side still have four matches remaining, but they can no longer be caught by second-placed Arsenal.

Slot has become the first Dutch manager to win the trophy, doing so in his first season since taking over.

Spurs stunned the jubilant Anfield crowd after just 12 minutes when former Liverpool player Dominic Solanke headed James Maddison’s corner past Allison Becker.

Solanke produced a brilliant leap and header to give the visitors a surprising lead and silence the home supporters.

Liverpool bounced back just four minutes later through Luis Diaz, who slotted Dominik Szboszlai’s cross into an empty net.

The linesman flagged for offside, but after a lengthy VAR review, the goal was awarded, sending Diaz and the Anfield crowd into pure joy.

Alexis Mac Allister then put the hosts ahead after 24 minutes, unleashing a venomous strike into the top corner, leaving Guglielmo Vicario helpless.

Mac Allister has had a fantastic season and is no stranger to a screamer, punishing Spurs for some poor play from their own box.

Cody Gakpo put Arne Slot’s side out of sight just 10 minutes later, latching on to the ball from a corner before firing past Vicario.

Liverpool completely dominated the second half, with a constant flow of attack on the Spurs goal.

Mohamed Salah joined in on the act after 63 minutes, cutting in from the right-hand side, before smashing the ball into the bottom corner.

The Anfield crowd erupted as their hero celebrated with a selfie in front of the stand; Salah has now scored 28 goals this season and is fifth in the all-time list for Premier League goalscorers.

Destiny Udogie added to yet another miserable afternoon for Spurs, turning Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross into his own net, giving Liverpool their fifth.

Liverpool went close a couple of times to extending their lead, but players and supporters erupted into pure joy as soon as the full-time whistle went, as an incredible noise rung round Anfield.

Slot’s side will lift the trophy after the final game of the season against Crystal Palace at Anfield, but celebrations will be ongoing throughout the next few days and weeks.

Meanwhile, Spurs’ attention turns to their UEFA Europa League semi-final against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

Rico Lewis caught Forest cold when he drilled home a 20-yard strike with a little over a minute on the clock, but things could have been different if Anthony Elanga had scored a goal similarly early in the second half.

Brought on at the interval, Elanga had a gilt-edged chance to score with his first half but side-footed wide Callum Hudson Odoi’s perfect cross from five yards out.

Soon afterwards, Josko Gvardiol headed home a corner to give City a comfortable advantage, although Forest were inches away from equalising on three occasions. Morgan Gibbs-White hit the bar, with an incredible first-time left-footed volley, and then the post, with Taiwo Awoniyi also hitting the woodwork late on.

The win means City will play in the cup final for the third successive year and, after being beaten by their city rivals last year, will hope to go one better when they meet Crystal Palace on May 17.

Rudiger apologises for throwing object at referee https://www.adomonline.com/rudiger-apologises-for-throwing-object-at-referee/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 16:45:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529234 Antonio Rudiger has apologised after being sent off for throwing an object at the referee during Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey final defeat by Barcelona.

Rudiger and Real team-mate Lucas Vazquez, who had both been substituted, were shown straight red cards for angrily reacting to a foul given against Kylian Mbappe shortly before the final whistle.

Real’s England midfielder Jude Bellingham, 21, was also later sent off for dissent.

Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea said in his report that centre-back Rudiger, 32, was dismissed for “throwing an object from the technical area, which missed me”. Rudiger reportedly threw an ice cube at the official.

“There’s definitely no excuse for my behaviour,” Rudiger posted on an Instagram story. “I’m very sorry for that.

“Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed.”

The Germany defender could be facing a lengthy ban, according to the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) disciplinary code.

If sanctioned under article 101, which covers “mild violence” towards referees, Rudiger could receive a suspension of between four and 12 matches.

However, if his actions are deemed more serious, article 104, which covers “assault against referees”, states players may be banned for three to six months if “the act was a single act and did not cause any harmful consequences”.

If the act is deemed as having posed a “serious risk” even without the referee requiring medical attention, the suspension could extend to between six months and a year.

What happened?

Real Madrid had come from behind to lead 2-1 before Ferran Torres’ 84th-minute equaliser sent the Clasico final in Seville to extra time.

Barcelona defender Jules Kounde drilled in a 22-yard screamer in the 116th minute to ultimately win a thrilling encounter on Saturday.

In the final moments, Real forward Mbappe tried to shrug off Eric Garcia and drive into the penalty area but was penalised for a foul on the Barcelona defender.

The Real bench reacted furiously, with Rudiger appearing to throw an object at De Burgos Bengoetxea, for which he was dismissed, before having to also be restrained by members of the Real coaching staff.

Vazquez, 33, was sent off for entering the field of play and protesting against the decision.

“You can see something is thrown – [Rudiger] is in big trouble, it doesn’t miss the referee by a million miles, it’s at the referee,” said Premier Sports commentator Terry Gibson.

“It’s pathetic from the Real Madrid players.”

Rudiger said the fact he had been substituted and therefore “not able to help” his team led to the “mistake” before the final whistle.

The referee report states Bellingham was later sent off for approaching the officials in an “aggressive attitude” and “having to be restrained by his team-mates”.

Video footage of the tunnel at half-time appears to show Bellingham say: “Everything goes in their favour. Every 50-50 decision goes in their favour” – though he was not sanctioned for this comment.

It is the second time Bellingham has been sent off for Real this season for dissent. He was given a two-match ban for swearing at the referee in a 1-1 La Liga draw with Osasuna in Februrary.

There were tensions between Real Madrid and De Burgos Bengoetxea in the build-up to the match.

The referee broke down in tears in a news conference over the pressure the club’s TV channel has put officials under, prompting an angry response by Real.

In February, Real Madrid wrote a formal letter of complaint to RFEF and Spain’s High Council for Sports saying Spanish refereeing was “rigged” and “completely discredited”.

After that letter, which followed a 1-0 loss to Espanyol, La Liga president Javier Tebas said Real Madrid had “lost their head”.

Later that month the RFEF condemned the “repulsive” abuse suffered by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero for sending off Bellingham against Osasuna.

Earlier this month, Rudiger and Mbappe were given suspended one-match bans and fined for indecent conduct during their Champions League last-16 win against Atletico Madrid, with Dani Ceballos also fined.

Semenyo scores as Bournemouth held at home by Man Utd https://www.adomonline.com/semenyo-scores-as-bournemouth-held-at-home-by-man-utd/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 16:36:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529229 Rasmus Hojlund’s injury time goal grabbed a point for Manchester United as 10-man Bournemouth suffered a blow to their hopes of European qualification.

Andoni Iraola’s men looked set for victory thanks to Antoine Semenyo’s 11th goal of the season midway though the first half.

But the contest turned on a controversial decision to upgrade Evanilson’s 70th-minute challenge on Noussair Mazraoui from a yellow card to a red following a video assistant referee (VAR) review.

Evanilson appeared to slip as he closed down the United defender but referee Peter Bankes upgraded his initial yellow card, meaning the Brazilian must now serve a three-match ban.

United piled forward looking for an equaliser and after Mason Mount’s shot had been deflected wide, Hojlund turned Manuel Ugarte’s effort home from close range after the Uruguay midfielder had been set up by Luke Shaw.

The result lifts Ruben Amorim’s side to 14th in the Premier League but, in truth, their sights are fully trained on Thursday’s Europa League semi-final first-leg trip to Athletic Bilbao.

But the goal is devastating for Bournemouth, who remain below Fulham and Brighton in the quest for an eighth-place finish which would secure a spot in next season’s UEFA Conference League if Crystal Palace don’t win the FA Cup.

Kounde wins dramatic Clasico Copa del Rey final for Barcelona https://www.adomonline.com/kounde-wins-dramatic-clasico-copa-del-rey-final-for-barcelona/ Sun, 27 Apr 2025 06:41:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529126 Jules Kounde lashed in an extra-time screamer as Barcelona beat Real Madrid to win the Copa del Rey in a remarkable Clasico in Seville.

After a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes and with penalties appearing inevitable, the Barcelona defender took possession of the ball 22 yards out and drilled a fine effort into the bottom corner.

Barca had been by far the better side in the first half and led through Pedri’s fantastic first-time strike from outside the box after Lamine Yamal’s cut-back.

Real improved dramatically after Kylian Mbappe came on as a substitute, and he curled a free-kick, which he had won, into the bottom corner via the inside of the post.

Aurelien Tchouameni then headed Real ahead from Arda Guler’s corner.

But Barcelona levelled when Ferran Torres ran onto Yamal’s long ball and rounded goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois before slotting in.

Hansi Flick’s side thought they had a chance to win it in injury time when they were awarded a penalty for a Raul Asencio tackle on Raphinha but the decision was overturned after a long video assistant referee check.

That meant the game went to extra time, when Kounde’s fourth goal of the season was the difference.

The build-up to the game had been dominated by scrutiny of the match officials – and it finished with Antonio Rudiger and Lucas Vazquez being shown straight red cards from the Real bench.

England midfielder Jude Bellingham was also sent off after the final whistle for angrily confronting officials.

That was the last meaningful act of a first Clasico final in a major tournament since 2014, when Gareth Bale scored a fantastic late winner for Real in a 2-1 victory.

Kurt Okraku appointed 2nd Vice President of CAF https://www.adomonline.com/kurt-okraku-appointed-2nd-vice-president-of-caf/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 15:15:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529030 President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has been named the 2nd Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The announcement was made by CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, during a press conference held in Accra on Saturday, April 26.

Okraku, who was elected unopposed to the CAF Executive Committee in March, continues his steady rise within the leadership ranks of African football.

His nomination by President Motsepe was officially endorsed by the CAF Executive Committee during its meeting in Accra.

Currently serving as President of the WAFU Zone B, Okraku steps into the role previously occupied by Ahmed Yahya.

He will serve alongside Morocco’s Faouzi Lekjaa, who has been appointed 1st Vice President, replacing Senegal FA President Augustine Senghor.

Other appointments include Gabon’s Pierre-Alain Mounguengui as 3rd Vice President, representing Central Africa and emphasizing CAF’s drive to fully integrate the region into mainstream continental football.

Mounguengui’s diplomatic skills and focus on grassroots development are expected to bolster CAF’s unity efforts.

In a historic move, DR Congo’s Bestine Kazadi Ditabala becomes the 4th Vice President, marking a significant step forward for gender equality and inclusion within CAF.

A lawyer and seasoned football administrator, Kazadi’s appointment reflects a broader commitment to diversity.

Mozambique’s Feizal Sidat has been named 5th Vice President. With extensive experience as the former President of the Mozambican Football Federation, Sidat’s leadership will strengthen Southern Africa’s voice within CAF.

Together, these appointments reflect a renewed vision for CAF — one rooted in unity, inclusivity, and regional balance, under the leadership of Dr. Motsepe.

Jackson goal sends Chelsea back into Champions League places https://www.adomonline.com/jackson-goal-sends-chelsea-back-into-champions-league-places/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 14:04:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529017 Chelsea edged back into the Champions League places with a one-goal victory over Everton at Stamford Bridge.

The win moves the Blues up to fourth in the Premier League, level on points with Nottingham Forest and a point ahead of Newcastle, who play Ipswich later on Saturday.

With Forest and Aston Villa in FA Cup semi-final action this weekend, Chelsea will hold on to a top-five spot at least until Thursday, when Forest host Brentford.

The crucial three points were sealed by striker Nicolas Jackson, who ended a 13-match goalless run stretching back to December.

He drilled an instinctive 20-yard effort beyond Jordan Pickford and into the bottom corner in the 27th minute.

Despite being the better side, Chelsea were unable to kill the game off and, given the tight nature of the race for Champions League football and the Blues’ difficult league fixtures before the end of the season, there were uncomfortable moments when Everton improved in the final quarter.

But the hosts’ keeper Robert Sanchez saved well from both Beto and Dwight McNeil low to his right when needed.

Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea now play leaders Liverpool at Stamford Bridge next Sunday, then visit fellow Champions League chasers Newcastle, before hosting Manchester United, and travelling to Forest on the final day.

Everton have only won one of their past nine matches and remain 13th.

Ipswich relegated after Newcastle defeat, Wolves beat Leicester, Brighton down West Ham https://www.adomonline.com/ipswich-relegated-after-newcastle-defeat-wolves-beat-leicester-brighton-down-west-ham/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 12:00:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529109 Newcastle United beat Ipswich Town, Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Leicester City, West Ham lost at Brighton and Southampton were downed by Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

Newcastle enjoyed an easy 3-0 win over Ipswich, but the first half had appeared to be drifting to a stalemate, only for Alexander Isak to make a late breakthrough.

Ben Johnson saw red on 37 minutes for holding back the Swedish striker, and when Jacob Murphy was pulled in the box to give Newcastle a spot-kick, Isak converted in first-half added time.

England defender Dan Burn scored his first Premier League goal and his side’s second for the returning Eddie Howe, back from hospital after suffering from pneumonia, and William Osula headed in a late third.

The win lifted Newcastle into third spot on 62 points, while Ipswich are 15 points from safety with only 12 left up for grabs, resulting in their relegation.

Wolves ease past Leicester

Wolves won by the same scoreline over doomed Leicester City at Molineux.

Matheus Cunha has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months, and he struck on 33 minutes for the home side to demonstrate why he continues to attract interest from potential suitors.

The Brazilian struck his 15th league goal of the season – levelling the record set for Brazilians – with a close-range finish.

Jorgen Strand Larsen added a second 11 minutes after the restart with a flowing counterattack move, and there was hope for The Foxes when the soon departing Jamie Vardy had the chance to reduce the deficit from the spot, only to see Jose Sa beat away his effort.

Rodrigo Gomes then scored with five minutes left on the clock to wrap up the win. Wolves moved into 13th spot on 41 points, while Leicester are 18 points adrift of safety.

Seagulls clinch dramatic victory against West Ham

Brighton & Hove Albion enjoyed a thrilling 3-2 win over West Ham United, which began in earnest when Yasin Ayari scored for Brighton after just 13 minutes, curling a brilliant effort into the top corner from 25 yards out.

Mohammed Kudus levelled three minutes into the second half, and on 83 minutes, a diving header from Tomas Soucek appeared to give Graham Potter’s men all three points, only for Kaoru Mitoma to strike with a minute remaining.

Then in added time, Carlos Baleba scored an outstanding shot from distance to earn the home side the win.

Brighton’s win leaves them in ninth spot, level with Fulham in eighth, while West Ham sit 17th with their safety assured for the current campaign.

Late Sessegnon strike earns Fulham three points

Fulham also left it late for their victory, coming from behind to beat Southampton 2-1.

Jack Stephens put the already-relegated Southampton ahead on 14 minutes, but Emile Smith Rowe scored on 72 minutes to equalise, expertly bringing down a ball over the top before beating former Arsenal team-mate Aaron Ramsdale with a deflected effort.

With the game approaching its conclusion, Ryan Sessegnon stooped to head an awkward but well-taken header past Ramsdale for three points. Southampton remain bottom with just 11 points.

In the day’s early kick-off, an outstanding Robert Sanchez performance helped Chelsea to a 1-0 win over Everton. David Moyes’ team are now 14th, with Chelsea in fifth spot and eyeing a return to the UEFA Champions League.

Eze & Sarr fire Crystal Palace to FA Cup final courtesy of Aston Villa win https://www.adomonline.com/eze-sarr-fire-crystal-palace-to-fa-cup-final-courtesy-of-aston-villa-win/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 12:00:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529114 Ismailia Sarr netted twice after Eberechi Eze’s opener as Crystal Palace impressively downed Aston Villa at Wembley to reach the FA Cup Final for the third time.

Oliver Glasnier was happy for Villa to have the majority of possession with his team keen to catch them on the break with they often did and could have won by an even greater margin.

After a slow start to the match, just after the half-hour mark, Sarr found Eze 25 yards from goal and his curling effort just beat Emiliano Martinez before nestling in the roof of the net.

Jean-Philippe Mateta clipped the post from the penalty spot but soon afterwards set up Sarr, who missed a couple of gilt-edged chances but on this occasion drove a low effort in off the post giving the Villa stopper little chance.

In injury time, Sarr raced through one-on-one with Martinez to add deserved gloss to the scoreline and the Eagles will now play the winners of tomorrow’s match between Nottingham Forest and Manchester City in the domestic showpiece match on May 17.

Black Stars: Team Manager backs GFA’s decision to retain Otto Addo https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-team-manager-backs-gfas-decision-to-retain-otto-addo/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 11:17:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528975 Black Stars Team Manager, Ameenu Shardow, has backed Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) decision to keep Otto Addo as head coach of the senior national team.

Addo, 49, faced intense calls to step down after failing to lead Ghana to qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) — marking the first time in 20 years the Black Stars have missed out on the continental showpiece.

Despite a challenging 2024, where the team managed just two wins in 10 matches, the Black Stars made a strong start to 2025.

They secured consecutive victories against Chad and Madagascar during the March international window in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Shardow expressed confidence in Addo’s leadership.

“I know that, with the passage of time, all of us will come to appreciate [Otto Addo’s hard work],” Shardow told Asempa FM in an interview.

“All of us, even though we were on edge, did a good job by keeping him, because he will be a blessing to us for many years to come.”

Shardow also praised Addo’s character and coaching philosophy, highlighting qualities that suggest a bright future.

“He’s young, he’s driven, very passionate, and he’s willing to learn. He’s willing to listen to alternative perspectives.”

Currently, Ghana sits at the top of Group I in the World Cup qualifiers, three points clear of Comoros, with four matches remaining.

The Black Stars will face Chad and Mali in Matchdays 7 and 8 of the qualifiers in September.

We will prefer to appoint expatriate coach next season – Asante Kotoko https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-prefer-to-appoint-expatriate-coach-next-season-asante-kotoko/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 09:20:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528930 Communications Director of Asante Kotoko, Sarfo Duku, has revealed that the club is eager to appoint an expatriate as the new head coach for the upcoming football season.

This follows the club’s decision to part ways with head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum after a series of disappointing performances.

In the meantime, Kotoko has appointed former player Abdul Karim Zito as the caretaker manager for the remainder of the current campaign.

Zito, who has previously managed Dreams FC and Ghana’s U-20 national team, the Black Satellites, will also take on the role of Technical Director.

He will be assisted by Prince Yaw Owusu, a former head coach of Medeama SC and Inter Allies, who will provide support on the bench.

With just six matches left in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, Kotoko is already focused on next season.

During an interview with Kessben TV, Sarfo Duku confirmed that the club will open applications for the head coach position once the season concludes.

“At the end of the season, we will officially open applications for the role of head coach,” he said.

“This time, management is keen on bringing in a foreign coach who can bring a new perspective, discipline, and fresh tactical direction to the team,” he added.

Currently, Asante Kotoko is enduring a tough run, having gone four matches without a victory. The team will look to get back on track this Sunday when they face Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium in their Matchday 29 clash. Kick-off is set for 15:00 GMT.

Everyone wants to play for Man Utd – Amorim https://www.adomonline.com/everyone-wants-to-play-for-man-utd-amorim/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 08:04:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528928 Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is adamant the club remain attractive to potential transfer targets despite sitting 14th in the Premier League table.

The Portuguese, who took over in November, says he has “an idea” of what he wants his squad to look like next season.

Given United are heading for their worst finish since the 1973-74 relegation campaign, it seems certain he is wanting to execute major surgery.

United are interested in Wolves’ Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha and have also been heavily linked with Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap, who has a £30m release clause that will make him attractive to a number of clubs.

United need to win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League, and are at risk of only a second season without European football since English clubs were allowed back in 1990 following the Heysel tragedy.

Amorim has no doubts about whether United are an attractive proposition despite that.

“It’s Manchester United,” he said. “Every player wants to play for Manchester United.

“If you look at our club in the moment, with all the problems, including changing coach, it looks a little bit of a problem.

“But we have a clear idea and that’s the easiest part to explain for a player.”

Amorim refused to confirm United’s interest in Cunha, who has a £62.5m release clause and is understood to be open to an Old Trafford switch.

The former Sporting boss cited veteran midfielder Casemiro as an example of a player who has changed his mind about their long-term future at the club.

The Brazil midfielder, 33, has a year left on his deal and recently said he would like to stay at Old Trafford.

And Amorim said United’s plans for next season’s squad are starting to take shape.

“It is a conversation for the end of the season and things can change,” he said.

“But we want to do things early and we have an idea.”

Arsenal urged to put Visit Rwanda ‘financial gains’ aside https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-urged-to-put-visit-rwanda-financial-gains-aside/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 07:58:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528922 A number of Arsenal fans campaigning for the Premier League side not to renew its sponsorship deal with Visit Rwanda have called on the Gunners’ board to “put financial gains aside”.

The Gunners for Peace group are suggesting that Tottenham, home to the club’s arch-rivals, would be a preferable sleeve sponsor to Rwanda.

The African nation’s partnerships with Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Paris St-Germain have come under the spotlight after increased violence in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where authorities say 7,000 people have been killed since January.

The Congolese government accuses Rwanda of arming M23 rebels and sending troops to support the militants. Despite assertions from both the United Nations and United States, Rwanda has denied supporting the M23.

“In Congo, or amongst the Congolese community, they are ripping or cutting off the Visit Rwanda part of the Arsenal shirt,” campaigner Joe Mbu, who was born in DR Congo, told BBC Sport Africa.

Fellow Congolese Tresor Kudabika, who has modified his own kit to bear his nation’s flag on the sleeve, agrees the links to Rwanda are hurting the team’s popularity.

“We had the (Uefa Champions League) quarter-final against Real Madrid. The whole country in Congo was supporting Real,” he said.

Gunners for Peace say that, after recent polling, six in 10 Arsenal fans support ending the Visit Rwanda deal.

Visit Rwanda’s sleeve partnership with Arsenal began in 2018, and the current deal – which campaigners believe runs out at the end of this season – is reportedly worth more than £10m ($13.3m) per year.

Last week French club PSG, who face the Gunners in the semi-finals of the Champions League, renewed their partnership with Visit Rwanda until 2028.

That decision came despite an online petition calling on PSG to terminate the deal garnering 75,000 signatures.

Mbu and his fellow campaigners remain hopeful the north London outfit will not follow suit.

“I believe that they can do the right thing. The good thing about it is that we have been in communication with representatives from Arsenal,” Mbu said.

“At what point do we look at putting financial gains aside and look at the humanity of it?

“For Arsenal to continue with the sponsorship would be a great shame.”

Arsenal said the club will not be commenting on the Gunners for Peace campaign, while a Rwanda government spokesperson defended their sports partnerships and said they helped boost the country’s economy.

Meanwhile, the secretary general of the Arsenal Rwanda Supporters Club told BBC Sport Africa that assertions the broader fanbase were split over the deal “over-state the scale of dissent”.

Rwanda recently hosted a fan festival for the continent, bringing together supporters from over 10 countries.

“The festival showcased strong pan-African backing for the team and for the Visit Rwanda collaboration,” Arsenal Rwanda’s Olivier Nemeye said.

“Political grievances are properly addressed in diplomatic or multilateral forums (such as the African Union or UN), not via football sponsorships.”

Why ‘Visit Tottenham?’

Image caption: James Turner and Tresor Kubadika have distributed Gunners for Peace armbands to cover up the Visit Rwanda sleeve sponsorship

Gunners for Peace first posted a spoof video online advertising the “beautiful streets” of Tottenham before unveiling a billboard close to the Emirates Stadium bearing the message ‘Visit Tottenham’.

“It is a joke with a very serious punchline,” organiser James Turner said.

“What we’re trying to do is to make the point that we really can’t think of a worse sponsor than Rwanda.

“Obviously most Arsenal fans wouldn’t want to be sponsored by Tottenham.

“We simply want a sponsor that better fits the values of the club.”

The group also handed out armbands to supporters, which could be used to cover the Visit Rwanda logo on the sleeve of shirts, ahead of Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

“People have to feel free to wear Arsenal shirts,” Kudabika explained.

“You can’t be feeling ashamed to wear an Arsenal shirt because it has Visit Rwanda on it.”

Gunners for Peace are set to order more armbands ahead of the home leg of the Champions League tie against PSG next Tuesday, and are also in discussions with fans of the French club about potential joint action.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich have not issued an update on their football development and tourism promotion partnership with Rwanda since early February, when the German club sent two employees out to the country to “monitor the situation”.

Ceasefire and ‘economic transformation’

Image caption: M23 rebels have seized control of territory in eastern DR Congo which contains valuable minerals

The decades-long conflict in eastern DR Congo has intensified since January when M23 staged an unprecedented offensive, seizing the cities of Goma and Bukavu and sparking fears of a wider regional war.

Rwanda has said its forces are acting in self-defence against the Congolese army and allied militias, some of which it accuses of links to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

DR Congo also accuses Rwanda of illegally exploiting its mineral deposits, which Rwanda denies.

However, DR Congo and the rebels have agreed to halt fighting until peace talks mediated by Qatar reach their “conclusion”.

On Wednesday both sides jointly announced they will work towards peace following more than a week of talks described as “frank and constructive”.

Rwanda’s government has been accused of investing in sport to enhance its global image – a strategy labelled by critics as ‘sportswashing’.

Alongside the Visit Rwanda deals, Kigali is set to be the venue for cycling’s World Road Championships in September but hopes of the country hosting a Formula 1 race appear to have receded.

The Rwandan government said its sports partnerships had played an important role in the country’s “economic transformation” since 1994, and that African countries should get “more involved” in the sector.

“The Visit Rwanda tourism campaign allowed Rwanda to generate nearly $650m (£488m) in tourism revenues last year,” a spokesperson told BBC Sport Africa.

“Elite sport is no longer the preserve of the few countries who have historically controlled it.

“Global sporting organisations are embracing the rest of the world as they see the chance to grow new fans.”

Rwanda’s decision to go into partnership with Arsenal seven years ago was perhaps unsurprising, given that the country’s President, Paul Kagame, is a Gunners fan.

Even with peace talks ongoing, Kudabika is insistent that his club should now cut those ties.

“Wearing Visit Rwanda is just telling people that it’s okay for people to kill people from Congo,” he said.

“I believe that if Arsenal value their standards they will drop this.”

Liverpool have ‘big responsibility’ at Anfield https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-have-big-responsibility-at-anfield/ Sat, 26 Apr 2025 07:53:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528918 Liverpool manager Arne Slot says his team have a “big responsibility” to secure the club’s 20th top-flight title by getting a point against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

Arsenal’s draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday means the Reds need just a point against Spurs to win the Premier League with four games remaining.

Liverpool last secured the title in 2019-20 under former manager Jurgen Klopp during a time when fans were not allowed into stadiums because of the Covid pandemic.

The Reds lifted the trophy in an empty Anfield as they claimed their first top-flight win in 30 years.

“First of all, that’s a big responsibility because we are aware that the last time this club won the league it was Covid time so everybody is looking forward to Sunday but we know that there is still a job to be done and that’s at least one point,” said Slot.

“That’s what we know and, hopefully, our fans know as well and they support us in the best possible way they can – like they have all season – and are aware of the fact that we still need a point.

“We are definitely aware of that. It’s a nice game to look forward to but it’s also a responsibility we have for Sunday.”

Tottenham are without a win at Anfield since 2011 and come into the game having lost 18 league games this season and with their primary focus on a Europa League semi-final first-leg against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday.

Liverpool have been beaten just twice in the league this season – once at Anfield – and have the best home record in the top flight, having earned 41 points from 16 games.

Slot on strength of Premier League

Slot, who has previously won the Dutch title with Feyenoord, is in his first season as Liverpool manager after replacing Klopp last summer.

His side have a 12-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal.

There have been suggestions that the top flight has not been as competitive as in recent seasons but Slot believes it is a “difficult league” to win.

“I’ve only been here for a year so I can only tell you what I’ve experienced this season,” he said.

“I think it’s never been as exciting for top-four, top-five finish. In all the years before, it was quite clear which clubs will probably get the top three or four positions.

“In my opinion, it’s a really difficult league because that’s what I’ve experienced over here, there’s never been an easy game. It’s always been very hard to win a game of football.

“We are not the only team in this league who find it difficult to win a game by three or four goals. That was maybe easier two, three, four or five years ago.

“Either the teams are not so good any more – the Liverpools, the Manchester Citys and the Arsenals – or we are still very good but the other teams have the funds to spend just as much or, in some situations, even more.”

Late Mayele heroics send Pyramids into historic first final after five-goal thriller https://www.adomonline.com/late-mayele-heroics-send-pyramids-into-historic-first-final-after-five-goal-thriller/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 21:32:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528905 Egyptian side Pyramids sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Orlando Pirates in Cairo on Friday night to book their place in the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League for the first time in their history.

After a goalless first leg in Johannesburg, both sides came out determined at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium, and it was Pirates who struck first when Relebohile Mofokeng slotted home from close range midway through the first half.

The lead, however, was short-lived. Pyramids levelled just before half-time, with Fiston Mayele pouncing on a cross from Mostafa Fathi to restore parity.

The end-to-end nature of the contest continued after the break, and Pirates regained the advantage when Mohau Nkota fired in a superb low drive on 52 minutes.

Yet the Egyptian side showed their resolve in front of their home fans. Ramadan Sobhi rose highest to meet a Mohamed Chibi cross, heading past Sipho Chaine to make it 2-2 just moments later.

The decisive moment came with just six minutes remaining.

After a goalmouth scramble from a corner, Mayele reacted quickest, hammering the ball into the roof of the net to spark wild celebrations among the home faithful.

Despite late pressure from the South African visitors, including efforts from Tshegofatso Mabasa and Relebohile Mofokeng, Pyramids held on to secure a famous win and extend their remarkable unbeaten home record to 23 matches.

The result means Pyramids will face Mamelodi Sundowns — who earlier eliminated Al Ahly on away goals — in what promises to be a mouth-watering final.

For Orlando Pirates, it was a brave effort but one that ultimately fell short, ending their hopes of a second CAF Champions League title.

Sundowns edge past Al Ahly on away goals to reach CAF Champions League final https://www.adomonline.com/sundowns-edge-past-al-ahly-on-away-goals-to-reach-caf-champions-league-final/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 21:26:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528877 Mamelodi Sundowns clinched a dramatic spot in the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after holding Al Ahly to a 1-1 draw in Cairo on Friday night, progressing on the away goals rule.

After a tense 0-0 stalemate in the first leg in Pretoria, it was Al Ahly who drew first blood in the return leg at the Cairo International Stadium.

Taher Mohamed fired the hosts into the lead midway through the first half, smashing home from outside the box after being teed up by the lively Emam Ashour.

Backed by a passionate home crowd, Al Ahly dominated much of the first period and looked on course to finally break their winless streak against the South Africans.

But Mamelodi Sundowns showed their resilience and turned the tie on its head in the closing stages.

With ten minutes remaining, a low cross caused panic in the Ahly defence, resulting in Yasser Ibrahim inadvertently turning the ball into his own net under pressure from Peter Shalulile.

It was a heartbreaking moment for the Egyptian giants and a lifeline for Sundowns, who knew a 1-1 draw would be enough to see them through.

Al Ahly threw everything forward in search of a late winner, with substitutes Achraf Bencharki and Wessam Abou Ali both going close in a frantic finale.

But Sundowns, marshalled superbly by their backline and aided by a bit of fortune, held firm to seal a famous qualification.

It marks a significant milestone for Pretoria-based side, who have now gone nine consecutive matches unbeaten against the record African champions.

Sundowns’ reward is a place in the final, where they will face either Pyramids FC or Orlando Pirates — with the second semi-final set to be decided later.

For Al Ahly, it was a night of bitter disappointment despite their brave efforts, as their dream of a record-extending CAF Champions League title came to a crashing halt at home.

Palmer’s goalless run a mental thing – Maresca https://www.adomonline.com/palmers-goalless-run-a-mental-thing-maresca/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 16:08:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528911 Chelsea forward Cole Palmer’s recent struggles on the pitch are “a mental thing”, says boss Enzo Maresca.

The England international, 22, has not scored in 16 games – having netted 14 times in his first 23 games of the season.

Chelsea have slipped from second place to sixth – and out of the Champions League places – in that time.

But Palmer has had more shots than any other Premier League player during his goalless spell – 41 efforts.

“For sure it’s a mental thing, it’s not tactical or technical,” said Maresca.

“Cole is still the player who scored 14 goals in 20 games. The style is the same, the manager is the same, the club is the same. Nothing has changed around Cole. It’s just mentally in this moment.

“You can see he’s a little bit worried because he wants to help the team. You can see he’s struggling a bit on that. But he showed how happy he was after Fulham. It’s just a matter [of whether] we can win games. For sure he’s going to score goals.

“If you go back game by game, he had at least every game one or two chances, so it’s not about how the team is playing.”

  • Season ‘not a failure’

Maresca will miss Saturday’s game against Everton as he serves a one-match touchline ban.

Assistant boss Willy Caballero will be in the dugout.

“They asked me if I need someone next to me [in the stands],” said Maresca.

“I don’t know if I’ll be alone or if I’ll be with someone. Tomorrow I’ll try to be in the way I always try to be. When the manager is not there it’s for the leadership group to step forward and take responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Maresca says this season is “not a failure”.

The Blues, who are in the Conference League semi-finals, may not qualify for the Champions League next season.

“Compared with the past two years, it is not a failure,” said Maresca, who is in his first season in charge.

“How many times in the past two years have Chelsea been in the Champions League [places]? And this season we have been there almost all season. It’s an improvement or not? It’s already an improvement.”

Nationwide tour for Black Stars if they win 2026 World Cup – Kofi Adams https://www.adomonline.com/nationwide-tour-for-black-stars-if-they-win-2026-world-cup-kofi-adams/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 13:15:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528786

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has promised to organize a nationwide tour for the Black Stars if they win the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following back-to-back victories against Chad and Madagascar, the senior national team now leads Group I with 15 points, with four qualifying matches remaining.

In an interview with Starr FM, Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support for the Black Stars in their World Cup journey.

He announced plans for a grand victory tour to honor their success, should they secure the title.

Adams stated that all players would be flown in first class to visit every district in Ghana as part of a nationwide celebration of what would be an unprecedented achievement.

“If the Black Stars win the World Cup, I will arrange first-class flights for all the players to tour every district in Ghana to celebrate,” Adams said.

The Black Stars are set to face Chad and Mali in their Matchday 7 and 8 qualifiers in September before concluding the group stage with matches against Comoros and the Central African Republic.

Real Madrid dismiss cup final fears after referee’s tears https://www.adomonline.com/real-madrid-dismiss-cup-final-fears-after-referees-tears/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 12:07:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528908 Real Madrid have reacted angrily to a news conference where the referee for Saturday’s Copa del Rey final broke down in tears at the pressure the club’s TV channel has put officials under.

However, they denied reports they were considering pulling out of Saturday’s Clasico encounter against Barcelona in Seville (21:00 BST kick-off).

Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, who will referee the game, become the latest official to be attacked on Real Madrid TV this season.

A club video pointed out the win percentages of Barca and Real when the Spaniard has taken charge of their games, the fact he has never refereed in the Champions League or Fifa tournaments, and supposed mistakes the 39-year-old has made.

An emotional De Burgos Bengoetxea said: “When a child of yours goes to school and there are kids telling him that his father is a ‘thief’ and comes home crying, it’s totally messed up.

“What I do is try to educate my son, to say that his father is honest, above all honest, who can make mistakes, like any sportsperson.”

Pablo Gonzalez Fuertes, who will be the video assistant referee (VAR) for the final, also spoke out against Real Madrid TV.

But the 15-time European champions later refused to take part in pre-match activities, boycotting an open training session and press conference.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) said: “Real Madrid told the RFEF they will not take part in the press conference or the official training session looking forward to the [final].”

Image caption: Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea has previously refereed Clasicos

As the drama unfolded, Real Madrid released two critical statements, the second of which read: “In light of the rumours that have emerged in recent hours, Real Madrid CF announces that our team has never considered withdrawing from tomorrow’s final.

“Our club understands that the unfortunate and inappropriate statements made by the referees designated for this match, made 24 hours before the final, cannot taint a sporting event of global significance that will be watched by hundreds of millions of people, and out of respect for all the fans who are planning to travel to Seville, and all those who are already in the Andalusian capital.

“Real Madrid believes that the values of football must prevail, despite the hostility and animosity that have been manifested once again today against our club by the referees appointed for the final.”

Back in February, Real Madrid wrote a formal letter of complaint to the Spanish FA (RFEF) and Spain’s High Council for Sports saying Spanish refereeing was “rigged” and “completely discredited”.

In Friday’s news conference, De Burgos Bengoetxea said: “It’s not right what we are going through, many colleagues, and not just in professional football, but also at grassroots level.

“Everyone should reflect about where we want to go, about what we want from sport and from football.”

The Spaniard, who also officiates in Uefa club and international competitions, has previously taken charge of Clasico encounters.

VAR Fuertes added: “Have no doubt that we are going to have to start taking much more serious measures than we are taking.

“We will not continue to allow what is happening. Soon, you will hear from us.

“We are going to make history, because we are not going to continue to bear what we are putting up with.”

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick later echoed the call for action when speaking to the media.

“For me, it’s only a sport,” said the German. “It’s only a game. It’s only football. It is our responsibility to protect not only the players, but all the people involved in the game.

“It’s not nice that happened today. Of course, sometimes on the pitch there are some decisions that are about emotion but after the match, we should be done with it. Something must be done.”

After February’s letter of complaint, which followed a 1-0 loss to Espanyol, La Liga president Javier Tebas said Real Madrid had “lost their head”.

Later that month the RFEF condemned the “repulsive” abuse suffered by referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero after he sent off Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham against Osasuna.

Kojo Addae-Mensah: Pitso Mosimane would have been perfect replacement for Prosper Ogum https://www.adomonline.com/kojo-addae-mensah-pitso-mosimane-would-have-been-perfect-replacement-for-prosper-ogum/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 11:41:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528741 The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Databank, Kojo Addae-Mensah, believes Asante Kotoko should have considered hiring South African coach Pitso Mosimane as the successor to Prosper Narteh Ogum.

Narteh Ogum, who returned to the club in July 2023, was dismissed due to disappointing results in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

In response, the Interim Management Committee has appointed former Kotoko player Karim Zito as the Interim Coach and Technical Director for the remainder of the season.

Additionally, Prince Yaw Owusu has been confirmed as the club’s assistant coach.

Despite the new appointments, Addae-Mensah, a former columnist for Kotoko Express, believes the club should have considered Mosimane, who previously managed top African clubs Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly, as a potential candidate.

“Asante Kotoko should have gone for Pitso Mosimane as Coach Prosper Narteh Ogum’s replacement,” Addae-Mensah told LUV FM.

Currently sitting in 4th place on the league table with 47 points after 28 matches, the Porcupine Warriors will look to bounce back from recent struggles when they face Aduana FC in the Matchday 29 fixture on Sunday at the Baba Yara Stadium, with kick-off set for 15:00 GMT.

Black Stars have qualities to perform at 2026 World Cup – Maxwell Konadu https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-have-qualities-to-perform-at-2026-world-cup-maxwell-konadu/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 11:40:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528258 Former Black Stars assistant coach, Maxwell Konadu, believes the current crop of players has the qualities to perform at the 2026 World Cup.

The four-time African champions have enhanced their chances of qualification with back-to-back wins against Chad and Madagascar in Matchdays 5 and 6 of the qualifiers during the March international break.

Ghana secured an emphatic 5-0 win over Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium and a 3-0 victory over Madagascar in Morocco.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Konadu said the team has the potential to match world-class teams ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup, citing the quality of players and the renewed national support behind the team.

He added that while not all of the Black Stars players are plying their trade at elite European clubs, they are competing in top leagues—an indication of their readiness to face global football powerhouses.

“We have top players. Even though not all of them are in top clubs, many are playing in the best leagues in Europe,” the former Asante Kotoko gaffer said. “That alone should tell you that we have quality. It’s just a matter of getting them together and instilling the right attitude,” he added.

Konadu also pointed out that the back-to-back wins were a crucial morale booster following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to him, the win restored confidence in the squad and reignited national hopes of a World Cup berth.

“That first win was everything. It brought back belief in the team. Now, we are confident that Ghana can qualify for the World Cup,” he stated.

He further noted the massive support from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the government, and fans as key factors in the team’s recent turnaround.

Konadu emphasized that national unity and motivation have a direct impact on performance, regardless of which players are selected.

“When the players know the country is behind them, they will give everything. But if the spirit of the nation is missing, it doesn’t matter who you invite—they will struggle,” he said.

“It’s about getting the support of every Ghanaian, the FA, and the ministry. Without that, forget it.”

He also called for unity among the national team’s management, warning that internal divisions can derail even the most talented squads.

The Black Stars, who now sit at the top of Group I with 15 points, are set to face Chad and Mali in their next round of qualifiers in September.

Africa’s Liverpool fans ready to paint the continent Red as title glory beckons https://www.adomonline.com/africas-liverpool-fans-ready-to-paint-the-continent-red-as-title-glory-beckons/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 06:00:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528625 They may be separated by thousands of kilometres from the hallowed turf of Anfield, but the passion of Liverpool FC supporters in Africa burns just as bright.

With the Reds on the cusp of clinching their historic 20th Premier League title – a feat that would see them equal Manchester United’s record – fans across the continent are already in celebratory mode, ready to erupt should their team secure a point against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

“It’s a great time to be a Liverpool fan, and I am personally looking forward to celebrating a much deserved and maybe, some say, unexpected title win,” says Liam Lockhart, Chairman of the Official Liverpool Supporters Club (OLSC) in Gauteng, South Africa.

“I think like many Liverpool fans, I was not sure what to expect coming into this season with Jürgen Klopp leaving, but to kick on and continue has been nothing short of amazing from Arne Slot and Liverpool FC as a whole. “We have a total of over 100 signed-up members now, and there’s a lot of excitement within the club as we all look forward to seeing the Premier League trophy in our hands again.”

The anticipation is palpable, with supporters already making plans to mark this momentous occasion in true Liverpudlian style.

Neil Ruiters, Chairperson of the OLSC in Cape Town, South Africa, echoes this sentiment.

“I’m incredibly excited! The prospect of seeing Liverpool clinch their 20th league title and go level with Manchester United is not just historic — it’s emotional,” says Ruiters. “It would be a beautiful reward for a team that has shown grit, unity, and belief this season. The energy among the Cape Town Reds is electric! Every matchday feels like a final. There’s a sense of shared anticipation — we’re not just watching a football team; we’re part of something far greater.”

The Cape Town branch is already gearing up for a significant celebration. “We’ve already started laying the groundwork for a celebration. Should we secure the title, we’ll be hosting a Red Bash — a party with live screenings, music, LFC-themed décor, prizes, and of course, that famous Scouse spirit. Think of it as Cape Town’s Anfield for a day!” Ruiters enthusiastically shares.

Adding a crucial message for fans, he says, “If you’re not at Anfield, or at a supporters club, or can’t even make it to a TV screen on the day to watch Liverpool’s title celebrations, there’s always options like Showmax Premier League, so no matter where you are or what you are doing on the day, it’s something you simply cannot miss.”

In Gauteng, similar plans are underway.

“We are planning to have a musician come out and play some of the songs made so famous from Liverpool FC for the Spurs game on the 27th of April, which is hopefully the day we clinch the league title, and then we will also arrange with Ridgeway Racebar for a similar type of atmosphere for the final day against Crystal Palace,” reveals Lockhart.

Image

Reflecting on the season, he adds, “Having been so close for so many years, I am never really comfortable until it’s mathematically certain. My personal highlight, and when I thought we had done enough, was the win over Manchester City at home.”

In Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana, similar plans are underway to celebrate Liverpool’s title success.

The Liverpool Supporters Club in Nigeria says they have begun planning, for what they have labelled as a “massive occasion.”

“We are planning a parade in Abuja when Liverpool lift the trophy. We are all very excited about celebrating this momentous occasion,” says Davies Adewale, chairman of the Liverpool Supporters Club in Nigeria.

“Anfield may be thousands of miles away from us, but it’s home for us and always will be,” adds Adewale.

Despite the distance, the connection between Liverpool FC and its African fanbase remains incredibly strong.

“I think football has that effect on everyone who comes to love the game as we all do here at OLSC Gauteng, it infects our lives and can even make or break our weeks. We may be much further away than the people of Liverpool, but we feel the emotion of the game just as strong as them,” explains Lockhart.

Ruiters adds, “It’s the ethos of the club. Liverpool stands for passion, resilience, and community. You’ll Never Walk Alone is more than just a song — it’s a way of life. That spirit speaks to fans across borders, languages, and cultures. LFC has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. It’s more than football — it’s family, hope, belief. In the highs and the lows, the club has always represented unity and fighting spirit. It’s deeply personal.”

Lockhart, Ruiters and Adewale all agree that celebrating such a significant milestone is crucial.

“I think Liverpool fans know better than most that these days don’t come along every year and that we must savour every moment,” says Lockhart.

Ruiters agrees.

“Because football is about memories. Titles come and go, but the way a season makes you feel — that lasts forever. Celebrating together builds community and honours the emotional investment fans have made week in, week out.”

With the potential for title celebrations just days away, Liverpool supporters in South Africa are united in their anticipation and ready to paint their corners of the country red in honour of their beloved club.

FA Cup semis preview: Palace clash with Villa as Man City face Forest https://www.adomonline.com/fa-cup-semis-preview-palace-clash-with-villa-as-man-city-face-forest/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 06:00:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528645 The iconic Wembley Stadium in London takes centre stage as Nottingham Forest, Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa battle in the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 April 2025.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Sunday evening features Forest taking on City, with the Nottingham club looking to repeat their 1-0 triumph over their Manchester counterparts from when the teams last met (in early March, a Premier League clash at the City Ground) and return to the FA Cup final for the first time since 1991.

“We are so happy, all of us. It was a dream seeing our fans like that. There is nothing better,” said Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo after their penalty shootout win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the previous round.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels added: “It’s been a few years since the supporters have been to a semi-final so we’ll look forward to it as a team, hopefully we can go there and do something greater.”

City, meanwhile, overcame Bournemouth to earn a seventh successive appearance in the FA Cup semis – an achievement manager Pep Guardiola labelled as “outstanding”.

“We love the FA Cup. Hopefully, we can reach the final,” added the Spanish tactician, who has won the tournament twice with Man City, in 2019 and 2023.

Saturday’s match pits Crystal Palace against Aston Villa. The Eagles overpowered Fulham in the previous round and will be hoping to reach the FA Cup final for a third time (having been runners-up in 1990 and 2016), while the Lions comfortably saw off lower-league Preston North End and aim for a first final since 2015 (and to win the Cup for the first time since 1957!).

“I don’t want to talk about winning the trophy because even in the next game we can’t win it,” said Palace manager Oliver Glasner. ‘It’s just the semifinals and in a cup competition, it doesn’t matter if you lose in round one or the semifinal, you enter the competition to win it.

“But, yes, it is a great achievement to reach the semifinals, and especially in this environment, because it’s at Wembley and this is typically English, and I like it.”

Villa’s Unai Emery, meanwhile, noted: “This competition means a lot for supporters and to play at Wembley will be fantastic and the supporters are the very heart of the club. It is always very important to try and get our responsibility to give them a moment like that.”

The two winners will return to Wembley Stadium on Saturday 17 May to meet in the FA Cup final.

Serie A: Atalanta host Lecce as Inter clash with Roma https://www.adomonline.com/serie-a-atalanta-host-lecce-as-inter-clash-with-roma/ Fri, 25 Apr 2025 06:00:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528656 Reigning champions Inter Milan will face Roma in the pick of Matchday 34 fixtures in Serie A this weekend.

There is no better place to get your season-long ticket to the best football the world has to offer than DStv!

Inter will welcome Roma to the San Siro for a clash which will be key to their hopes of retaining the Scudetto, though the visitors are fighting to get into Europe themselves and will head to Milan with hope that they can put a spanner in the works for the Nerazzurri.

“We continue this journey. It’s a struggle but it makes us proud,” said Inter Milan manager Simone Inzaghi, who is worried about the effect of fatigue on his team.

“It’s a very heavy season but we must adjust and are doing so with everyone sacrificing themselves to help. Besides physical fatigue, there’s also mental fatigue. Staying focused isn’t easy but I’m fortunate to coach a group that gives everything for these colours.

“We must continue on this path […]. It will require a lot of sacrifice, and we are ready to put it on the field.”

Inter’s main title threats, Napoli, will host Torino at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. The Partenopei have mostly thrived under the pressure of being championship contenders, according to manager Antonio Conte.

“The fans sense the team is going beyond its limitations and that can only be appreciated,” said the veteran tactician. “There are dangers in every game, as from now to the end of the campaign, every team has an objective it needs to achieve, whether it’s fighting for safety, a place in Europe or the Scudetto.”

Elsewhere in the Italian top flight in this round, Lazio will host Parma and continue their push for a place in the top European competition next season, AC Milan’s messy season continues with a trip to relegation-threatened Venezia, Juventus will welcome Monza to the Allianz Stadium in Turin, and Atalanta host Genoa in Bergamo.

Juve manager Igor Tudor has shaken things up at the Old Lady: “Every match should be approached like a final, I reiterated this to the whole team. Past and future always count for little: I am happy because I found the lads with a desire to work and improve, this has been my good fortune. Their response surprised me positively, they are the ones who make the difference.”

Liverpool and Spurs, who will clash at Anfield on the late afternoon of Sunday 27 April, will be meeting for the fourth time this season, with their first Premier League encounter back in December producing an amazing 6-3 away triumph for the Reds. The teams then met in a two-legged Carabao Cup semifinal, with Tottenham winning 1-0 at home, before being blown away 4-0 in the return game.

Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou recently spiced up the narrative between the two teams by claiming that Liverpool get preferential treatment in the media, citing a great ‘fuss’ being made when decisions go against Arne Slot’s side.

“I think in the time I’ve been here, we’ve had two decisions that have gone for us against Liverpool and there has been a national campaign, almost,” said the prickly Australian.

“It seems like every fight ends up being an internal fight at this club. There’s never any sort of defending of the club or the club defending itself. That’s a unique challenge, but I accepted that challenge so I’ve got to try to find a way to overcome it.”

The round opens on the midweek of Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 April with Manchester City hosting Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace visiting Arsenal respectively. Villa, City and Palace will all be in FA Cup semifinal action on the weekend, so their team selection is bound to have one eye on those clashes.

The weekend will feature Chelsea hosting Everton in the early kick-off on Saturday, while a potential thriller later the same afternoon sees Graham Potter return to the South Coast, as he takes his West Ham United to a former club in the shape of Brighton & Hove Albion.

A strong close to the campaign is needed for the Hammers, who have endured a somewhat dispiriting season: “You want to finish as high as you can but, at the same time, finish the season off in a good way so you’ve got positivity, progress and also information in terms of what we need to do in the summer and how we can improve things,” said Potter.

Also in action in this round is Bournemouth against Manchester United on Sunday, as well as the re-arranged clash on Thursday 1 May between FA Cup semifinalists Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

Second-Tier football in SA more competitive than Ghana Premier League – Konadu https://www.adomonline.com/second-tier-football-in-sa-more-competitive-than-ghana-premier-league-konadu/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 17:03:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528225 Former Asante Kotoko head coach Maxwell Konadu has claimed that South Africa’s second-tier football league offers a higher level of competition than the Ghana Premier League.

Konadu made this assertion during an interview with Graphic Sports after recently parting ways with South African side Black Leopards.

Having managed several top clubs in Ghana, including Legon Cities and All Stars, the experienced coach praised the depth and quality of South African football, particularly at the lower levels.

He noted that even teams in the country’s second division enjoy strong financial backing, which allows them to attract top talent and maintain a high level of competitiveness.

“The second-tier league in South Africa is more competitive than the Ghana league,” Konadu said.

“They pay their players well, and that has attracted top talent. Even during international breaks, matches in those leagues are suspended because many players get national team call-ups,” he added.

Konadu, who also previously served as an assistant coach for the Black Stars, highlighted the contrast with Ghana’s domestic league, emphasizing the need for greater investment and structural improvement.

Asante Kotoko legend supports coach Ogum’s dismissal https://www.adomonline.com/asante-kotoko-legend-supports-coach-ogums-dismissal/ Thu, 24 Apr 2025 17:02:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2528237

Asante Kotoko legend Sarfo Gyamfi has expressed his full support for the club’s decision to part ways with head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum.

Ogum, who rejoined the Porcupine Warriors in July 2023, was dismissed after a poor run of form in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, during which the team went four games without a win.

In an interview with GhanaSportsPage, Gyamfi was candid in his assessment, revealing that the coach had lost the dressing room and created a toxic atmosphere among the players.

“With what I hear from the dressing room, there are a lot of issues between the players and the coach, as some reports had suggested earlier,” he said.

He went on to criticize Ogum’s approach to man-management, pointing out that a coach’s attitude plays a significant role in a player’s motivation. Gyamfi explained that a coach who insults players, calling them “uncivilized,” could break their spirits and hinder their performance.

“As a footballer, when your coach commends you in training and encourages you to work harder, even after mistakes, it builds your confidence. But when insults are used, it has a negative impact,” Gyamfi stated. “It was better for him to leave.”

Gyamfi also took issue with Ogum’s recruitment strategy, suggesting that despite signing a number of new players, the team’s underlying issues remained unaddressed.

“If I had the power, I would have sacked him long ago. He signed a lot of players, but the problems still persisted,” he added.

Following Ogum’s departure, Asante Kotoko appointed Karim Zito as the new head coach, in hopes of turning the team’s fortunes around.
