With the co-hosts already leading 3-0 in Vancouver and with a man advantage, Qatar’s Assim Omer Madibo and Kone both challenged for the ball, resulting in a lengthy stoppage and the Canadian being stretchered off.

Madibo was originally shown a yellow card, but it was upgraded to a red after a video assistant referee (VAR) intervention.

But with his name being chanted by the Canadian supporters, ex-Watford midfielder Kone was able to sit up and wave as he was carried around the side of the pitch on a stretcher while inhaling painkillers.

Canada are now likely to reach the knockout rounds, but the injury to Kone is a huge blow to their prospects of a run beyond the last 32.

The horrific injury marred what was otherwise a historic occasion for Canada.

Cyle Larin opened the scoring with a poacher’s finish in the 16th minute, netting his second in as many games, before Jonathan David scored the first of his hat-trick 13 minutes later.

Qatar were then shown the first of their two red cards as Homam El Amin was sent off for a professional foul on Tajon Buchanan in the 33rd minute.

David netted his second in first-half added time.

Kone’s injury overshadowed the second half: When Nathan Saliba curled in a free-kick to make it 4-0 in the 63rd minute, he held up the injured midfielder’s shirt – a gesture that was met by huge cheers from the crowd.

Canada added a fifth with 15 minutes remaining as Mohammad Al Mannai sliced Jacob Shaffelburg’s effort into his own goal.

David rounded off a superb hat-trick in stoppage time by latching on to Buchanan’s effort before driving beyond Mahmoud Abunada.

Victory by a six-goal margin means Canada sit top of group B – level on points with Switzerland, but three goals better off.

Messi’s father dealing with ‘health-related situation’ https://www.adomonline.com/messis-father-dealing-with-health-related-situation/ Fri, 19 Jun 2026 02:17:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674538 Lionel Messi’s father is currently dealing with a “health-related situation”, the family said in a statement on Thursday.

“At this time, he is under medical supervision, recovering and progressing favourably within the condition he is experiencing,” the statement said.

Messi was in tears after scoring his first goal in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening World Cup match earlier this week.

Argentina’s captain, 38, went on to complete a hat-trick, drawing level with Miroslav Klose at the top of the all-time World Cup goalscoring list.

“Why did I cry? It was something completely unrelated to football,” Messi said after the match.

“I went through some difficult days, but I’m grateful to the entire delegation and my team-mates because they were always by my side, giving me a lot of strength to help me get through it.”

The family addressed the speculation around Jorge Messi’s health following that opening game.

“In light of speculation that has circulated in recent hours, the family wishes to express its deep discomfort with the lack of sensitivity, respect, and discretion with which some people have treated what is strictly a private family matter.

“The family also wishes to clarify that only his closest relatives have real and accurate information regarding Jorge’s condition. Therefore, any version, statement, or information that does not come directly from the family and its official channels should not be considered valid or truthful.”

The statement continued: “At times like these, we ask for responsibility, prudence, and humanity. A person’s health and the peace of mind of those around them should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media interest.

“We sincerely appreciate the expressions of affection, respect, and concern we have received, and we ask that Jorge’s privacy, confidentiality, and intimacy – as well as that of his entire family – be respected throughout this process.”

Argentina’s next group game is against Austria on Monday 22 June (18:00 BST), before their final group game against Jordan on Sunday 28 June (03:00 BST).

Liverpool sign Munoz and offer £86m for Diomande https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-sign-munoz-and-offer-86m-for-diomande/ Fri, 19 Jun 2026 02:15:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674535 Liverpool have signed Spain winger Victor Munoz – and told RB Leipzig that they will pay a package worth about 100m euros (£86m) for Yan Diomande.

The Reds confirmed the signing of Munoz from Osasuna after triggering his 40m euro (£34.5m) release clause.

Munoz is part of Spain’s World Cup squad, with Liverpool sending staff to the United States to conduct his medical on Wednesday.

Diomande is also at the World Cup with Ivory Coast, and although Paris St-Germain are in the race to sign him too, they are yet to make an offer and Liverpool are in pole position for the 19-year-old winger.

However, German side Leipzig want more than the package Liverpool are willing to offer, and there is also no desire to see the teenager leave in the transfer window.

There is an understanding, though, if Diomande performs well at this summer’s tournament, his transfer value could increase, and a package in excess of 130m euros (£112m) would change their stance.

Diomande scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga last season.

Munoz, 22, who made his international debut in March, can play on both wings and will sign a six-year deal at Anfield. Liverpool will pay the fee in two instalments.

Newcastle were in advanced talks to sign the forward, after they sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, but Liverpool have won the race for Munoz, who scored seven goals and produced five assists in 36 appearances last season.

He will become Liverpool’s first signing since Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slot as head coach earlier this month.

When he was linked with Newcastle, La Liga expert Phil Minshull described Munoz as “one of the pearls of Spanish football” who has an excellent work-rate in attack and defence.

Munoz is a graduate of Barcelona’s La Masia academy and went on to join Real Madrid, where he made two brief substitute appearances, before moving to Osasuna in July 2025 for 5m euros.

Madrid retained a 50% sell-on clause and had a matching rights option for Munoz.

They looked at taking him back but concerns over regular playing time under Jose Mourinho made it a non-starter for Munoz.

Barcelona also showed interest before they signed Gordon in a deal worth more than £69m.

Liverpool beat Newcastle to another signing – analysis

Last summer, it was Hugo Ekitike who chose Liverpool over Newcastle before Alexander Isak forced a move from St James’ Park to Anfield.

The tale of Victor Munoz follows a similar pattern, with Liverpool hijacking Newcastle’s move by triggering his release clause with Osasuna.

Interest also came from Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen but ultimately, Munoz chose Anfield, with the deal accelerating following the appointment of Iraola, who has extensive knowledge of La Liga.

Munoz’s pace, his role in breaking down low blocks, as well as his ability to deal with the ball in the final third, all played a part in Iraola’s push to make him the first signing of his tenure at Anfield.

There is a feeling that Munoz’s overall output must improve but Liverpool believe that will come over time, with a six-year-deal proof of that, and are encouraged by the fact that they have secured a player who can get himself into dangerous positions.

The fact that he previously spent time at Barcelona and Real Madrid is indication of his potential.

The right-footed Spaniard mainly plays off the left and with Mohamed Salah leaving, the need for attacking reinforcements is clear.

Liverpool are confident that having Munoz, alongside Rio Ngumoha and Cody Gakpo, will add to the versatility they have.

And they believe that his arrival will not reduce playing time for 17-year-old Ngumoha, who made his England debut earlier this month.

The understanding is that Munoz will not be the only attacking signing Liverpool make this summer.

There remains a strong interest in Yan Diomande, who plays for RB Leipzig and is at the World Cup with Ivory Coast with the 19-year-old also admired by Paris St-Germain.

Meanwhile, there is interest from Italy for Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa, who wants to play regular football, having made just one Premier League start last season.

Tuchel’s complaints lead to Fifa moving photographers https://www.adomonline.com/tuchels-complaints-lead-to-fifa-moving-photographers/ Fri, 19 Jun 2026 02:07:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674532 England head coach Thomas Tuchel has won a battle with Fifa to get photographers moved away from the bench during the national anthems.

Tuchel said he “could not see my team” before Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Croatia, with a wall of photographers blocking his view to the pitch.

Fifa has now changed its policy and agreeing to a compromise for all affected games.

Photographers will now be grouped in a huddle closer to the halfway line – allowing an unobstructed view for the coaching staff.

The Group L game in Dallas was Tuchel’s first as a World Cup manager but he revealed the occasion, particularly the emotion of the national anthems, was spoiled.

“I have to tell you something. I’m begging Fifa to change the position of the photographers in the national anthem, because I could not see my team,” Tuchel said.

“It was a very special moment, and I was standing in front of a wall of 50 photographers and I could not see one single player. It ruined a little bit my experience.”

The AT&T Stadium usually serves as the home of the Dallas Cowboys, with the NFL field too small for World Cup matches.

The surface had to be raised 1.2m to be able to fit in a football pitch, which meant part of the sidelines were lost – resulting in limited space for the coaches and the photographers during the national anthems.

Fifa first deployed the new approach during Thursday’s Group A fixture between Czech Republic and South Africa in Atlanta.

Visa saga will not shake Thomas Partey; England clash could be his ‘payback time’ – George Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/visa-saga-will-not-shake-thomas-partey-england-clash-could-be-his-payback-time-george-afriyie/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 17:23:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674473 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie believes Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey remains mentally strong despite the controversy surrounding his Canadian visa and will be highly motivated when Ghana takes on England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Afriyie said the challenges Partey has endured ahead of the tournament could serve as extra motivation rather than a distraction.

“The pain and the struggles our son is going through, people think it will affect him, but I see it differently,” Afriyie said. “Psychologically, all the issues going on will motivate Partey in the England game. It is rather positive energy.”

The former football administrator noted that while the final decision on team selection rests with the technical team, he is confident the experienced midfielder will rise to the occasion if given the opportunity.

“I don’t know the coach’s selection, and I won’t try to dictate to the coach, who is doing his work, but I believe Partey will deliver,” he stated.

Afriyie backed his confidence with examples from Partey’s performances for Ghana over the years, describing him as a player who has consistently stepped up in crucial moments.

“I’ve known Partey and watched him grow from a young man,” he said. “During the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, Ghana went to Congo-Brazzaville without two key players. Partey was pushed forward from his usual midfield role, and he scored a hat-trick.”

According to him, Partey’s influence has repeatedly proved decisive for the national team.

“For us to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Partey played a huge role. We drew 0-0 with Nigeria in Kumasi and went to Abuja, where his away goal helped us qualify. Even in these qualifiers, whenever things became difficult, Partey made the difference.”

Afriyie, an avid Arsenal supporter, insisted the midfielder possesses the character and experience to thrive under pressure.

“The Partey I know, the one who played as a midfielder for Arsenal and has featured in top international matches, will make a difference in the England game. What is going on won’t shake him,” he stressed.

He further suggested that a strong performance against England would be the perfect response to the difficulties the midfielder has faced in recent weeks.

For Afriyie, rather than being weighed down by the controversy, Partey could use it as fuel to produce one of his most memorable performances for Ghana on the biggest stage.

2026 WC: Why England is beatable – George Afriyie speaks on Black Stars’ next game https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-why-england-is-beatable-george-afriyie-speaks-on-black-stars-next-game/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 17:23:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674447 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to upset England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that the three-time African champions should not underestimate themselves.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Afriyie said recent results at the World Cup have demonstrated that traditional football powerhouses are no longer untouchable, making Ghana’s upcoming clash with England a game the Black Stars can approach with confidence.

Drawing from his years of experience with the national team, Afriyie said he has witnessed enough in football to know that reputations alone do not win matches.

“At one point, I was the chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee. On two occasions, I led the team to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, and later to the semi-finals. I was also part of the Emergency Committee that followed the team to Brazil,” he recounted.

“I have been part of the Black Stars for a very long time and one thing I have realised is that in international football, big names do not always guarantee results.”

According to him, several outcomes at the ongoing World Cup prove that any team can compete with the best on its day.

“We all know the pedigree of Portugal in international football, but if Congo can draw with Portugal, then Ghana can draw with England or even beat them,” he said.

“We all know the pedigree of Brazil, and if Morocco can draw with Brazil, then it can happen in the Ghana-England game as well.”

Afriyie also pointed to the performances of African nations such as Côte d’Ivoire and Egypt as evidence that African teams are capable of competing at the highest level.

“We should not underestimate ourselves. England is beatable,” he stressed.

The former football administrator said he is encouraged by the determination within the current Black Stars squad and believes the players are eager to write their names into Ghana’s football history.

“These young boys are determined to make history. Whenever I am given the platform to speak about the Black Stars, I will only encourage them. I will say things that can inspire and motivate them. I don’t want to be negative,” he stated.

Afriyie added that while critics are free to analyse and scrutinise the team’s prospects, his responsibility as a former football administrator is to rally support behind the players.

“As an administrator, I can only encourage them. Others can discuss and dissect the team, but I choose to inspire them.”

He also reiterated his belief that midfielder Thomas Partey should start against England, describing the Arsenal star as a player whose experience and mentality could prove decisive.

“There is a psychological aspect to football,” he noted.

To support his argument, Afriyie referenced former Black Stars midfielder Laryea Kingston, who resigned from his role with Ghana’s youth teams before later taking charge of Uganda’s youth national teams and securing a memorable victory against Ghana.

“Nobody knows tomorrow. It is only God who knows tomorrow,” he said. “Laryea Kingston resigned because he believed in his abilities. Later, he became coach of Uganda’s Under-17 and Under-20 teams and got the opportunity to face Ghana. That was his payback time.”

Drawing parallels with Partey’s current situation, Afriyie maintained that the midfielder possesses the character and quality to rise to the occasion when Ghana faces England.

“For me, the Partey I know, the one who played as a midfielder for Arsenal, will make a difference in the England game. What is going on will not shake him.”

With confidence growing ahead of the highly anticipated encounter, Afriyie believes the Black Stars have every reason to believe they can challenge England and create another memorable chapter in Ghana’s World Cup history.

The deceased, Sara Araba Tettey, a newly qualified lawyer and alumna of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), was said to have collapsed moments after jubilant scenes erupted following the Black Stars’ victory.

Ms Tettey, who was called to the Ghana Bar earlier this year, was working with O & A Legal Consult and was widely regarded by colleagues and friends as one of the country’s promising young legal professionals.

According to eyewitness accounts, she was watching the match with friends at Standard Hostel, a private student hostel at Bomso near the KNUST campus in Kumasi, when she suddenly became unresponsive amid celebrations after the final whistle.

Friends and other patrons at the hostel immediately rushed her to the KNUST Hospital, where medical personnel battled to save her life.

Sources indicated that doctors and emergency responders administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes in an effort to revive her. Despite the intensive medical intervention, she was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The sudden passing of the young lawyer has sent shockwaves through the legal fraternity, particularly among her colleagues from KNUST, the Ghana School of Law and members of the Bar who had recently celebrated her admission to the legal profession.

Tettey”,Friends and former classmates described Ms Tettey, affectionately known as “Araba Tettey,” as intelligent, hardworking, compassionate and full of promise.

Many have taken to social media to express grief and pay tribute to a young professional whose legal career was only beginning.

Her death has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a moment of national celebration as Ghanaians rejoiced over the Black Stars’ successful start to their World Cup campaign.

The body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending autopsy and funeral arrangements.

Yirenkyi emerged as Ghana’s hero in Toronto, scoring deep into stoppage time to secure a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama and hand the Black Stars a vital three points in their Group L opener.

The youngster’s impressive performances have continued to attract praise from football fans and pundits alike, with many tipping him as one of the country’s brightest prospects for the future.

Speaking to 3Sports after the game, Ayew lauded the midfielder’s impact since joining the national team but stressed the importance of managing his development carefully.

The veteran forward, who has become one of a select group of Ghanaians to feature at three FIFA World Cup tournaments, believes Yirenkyi possesses immense potential and should be given the support needed to flourish.

“He’s been exceptionally well since coming into the national team. All credit to him, he deserves it, he does his job. He’s a future talent, and we need to protect him to make sure he reaches his full potential,” Ayew said.

Yirenkyi’s winning goal ensured Ghana began their World Cup campaign on a positive note, moving into second place in Group L behind England, who recorded a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening fixture.

The Black Stars will now shift their focus to a highly anticipated clash against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group-stage campaign against Croatia four days later.

With three points already on the board, Carlos Queiroz’s side will be hoping to build momentum as they pursue a place in the knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Partey missed Ghana’s opening match against Panama, where the Black Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory, after Canadian authorities denied his visa application due to criminal charges currently pending against the midfielder.

The 33-year-old subsequently sought to overturn the decision through an emergency application, but the Canadian Federal Court upheld the visa refusal.

Bernard Bediako Baidoo

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Baidoo highlighted Partey’s importance to the national team, insisting Ghana lacked his experience, composure and quality in midfield during the win over Panama.

According to the lawmaker, the midfielder’s presence could prove crucial as Ghana prepare to take on one of the tournament favourites.

“Thomas Partey will be the difference-maker against England; he’s fired up and ready to take control of the game,” Baidoo said.

Ghana currently sit second in Group L behind England, who began their World Cup campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to a high-stakes encounter against the Three Lions at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group-stage campaign against Croatia four days later.

Having already secured three points, coach Carlos Queiroz and his side will be eager to maintain their momentum as they pursue a place in the knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The four-time African champions opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over Panama, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring a stoppage-time winner to hand the Black Stars a crucial three points.

Speaking after the game, Semenyo, who was named the Man of the Match, suggested Ghana would be ready to prove a point against one of the tournament favourites.

“We want to prove a point. I’m just going to leave that message out there,” he told Sky Sports.

England currently leads Group L following an impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening fixture.

Ghana will clash with England at Gillette Stadium, before Ghana wrap up their group stage against Croatia four days later.

2026 WC: Substitute Manzambi inspires Switzerland to World Cup win over Bosnia https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-substitute-manzambi-inspires-switzerland-to-world-cup-win-over-bosnia/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 12:49:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674528 Substitute Johan Manzambi scored twice as Switzerland beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 in a chaotic final 20 minutes to edge towards a place in the World Cup round of 32.

Manzambi met a knockdown in the penalty area with a first-time volley past Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj in the 74th minute, just two minutes and 46 seconds after he came off the bench. It was only the 20-year-old’s fourth touch.

With Bosnia down to 10 men following Tarik Muharemovic’s straight red card for bringing down Breel Embolo when clean through on goal, Ruben Vargas doubled Switzerland’s advantage with a precise curling finish into the bottom corner.

Vargas turned provider in the 90th minute when he set up Manzambi to score his second of the night from close range, before Granit Xhaka converted an injury-time penalty after Djibril Sow was tripped by Amar Memic.

Ermin Mahmic scored a late consolation for Bosnia with a spectacular volley following a corner.

Until Manzambi’s opener, Switzerland had been frustrated by their own lacklustre finishing and a stubborn Bosnia defence.

In the early stages, Switzerland exploited space on the left wing because of Bosnia’s narrow shape out of possession, but Dan Ndoye fired into the side-netting before failing to make contact with a low cross with an attempted flick.

Ndoye saw his spectacular bicycle kick effort tipped over the bar early in the second half, before he made way for Manzambi.

Freiburg midfielder Manzambi has reportedly attracted interest from several Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Bosnia began to push again and looked the stronger side, but lost momentum at the hydration break midway through the second half.

Bosnia’s veteran striker Edin Dzeko made his first appearance in his second World Cup and was his side’s main threat, but could not muster a goal and was replaced on 64 minutes.

Switzerland top group B with four points, while Bosnia are bottom with one point and a goal difference of minus three.

What’s next for these teams?

Switzerland’s final group match is against tournament co-hosts Canada in Vancouver on Wednesday, 24 June (20:00 BST). Bosnia will face Qatar in Seattle at the same time.

South Africa trailed after five minutes and seven seconds when Michal Sadilek latched on to a clever lay-off and rifled home the earliest goal of the tournament so far.

The Bafana Bafana, who also conceded early against Mexico in their tournament opener, eventually settled into the game and slowed down play, but they struggled to create chances and only managed their first shot on target in the 74th minute.

But their fortunes finally changed as Thapelo Maseko’s shot thundered into Pavel Sulc’s arm in the Czech box with less than 10 minutes of normal time remaining.

Mokoena made no mistake with the finish, slotting into the left corner.

A point does little to help either side and their chances of qualifying for the knockout stages remain in the balance, with Mexico and South Korea above them in the Group A table.

However, with the eight best third-placed teams progressing to the last 32 and three points likely to be enough to secure a place in the knockout stages, South Africa and the Czech Republic still have it all to play for in their final group games.

South Africa face South Korea on Thursday, 25 June at 02:00 BST, while the Czechs will take on co-hosts Mexico in the Azteca at the same time.

Black Stars playing against England is a motivation, I’m certain they’ll do well – C.K. Akonnor https://www.adomonline.com/black-stars-playing-against-england-is-a-motivation-im-certain-theyll-do-well-c-k-akonnor/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 12:09:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674312 Former Black Stars coach C.K. Akonnor believes Ghana must significantly improve in all aspects of its game ahead of the crucial FIFA World Cup clash against England on June 23, but remains confident the team can rise to the occasion.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Akonnor said England’s organised pressing style would present a much tougher challenge than Ghana’s opening match, stressing that the Black Stars would need to be more composed in possession.

“If you look at this England team and the way they play, they are very organised. They are very compact and they press very, very well,” he said.

According to him, Ghana must find ways to keep the ball and avoid being overwhelmed by England’s high-intensity approach.

“When you have a team that presses high like that, it means you must have players who can hold the ball confidently. Ghana should be able to keep possession as long as possible through positioning, passing and movement,” he explained.

Akonnor noted that England’s pressing game was evident in their victory over Croatia and believes the Black Stars technical team will be studying ways to counter it.

“The coach will look into it if indeed he wants to maintain the same squad. Certainly, we have to improve in every aspect of the game,” he added.

Despite anticipating a difficult encounter, the former Ghana coach said the Black Stars’ winning start to the tournament provides a solid foundation and should boost the players’ confidence.

“Our first match, we’ve won. That is a big step ahead. I strongly believe that in the next match we will do well and improve in a lot of areas,” he stated.

Akonnor also weighed in on the possible role of midfielder Thomas Partey, describing him as a player capable of influencing the game with his intelligence and composure.

“Thomas Partey is no ordinary player. He is an intelligent player, a player who can control a game for his team,” he said.

However, he stopped short of calling for Partey’s inclusion, insisting the decision ultimately rests with Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

“I cannot sit here and make that decision because we are talking about an experienced coach who has been there. He will know whether to use Partey or not,” Akonnor said.

The former Black Stars trainer further highlighted the importance of mental strength and motivation, noting that facing a football powerhouse like England should inspire the Ghanaian players.

“Playing England is a motivation alone for the boys and they will do well. They will come out good,” he said.

Akonnor expressed confidence that Ghana’s performance level would improve rather than decline, citing the team’s collective effort in its opening game.

“What we did as a team collectively was very positive, and there is more room to improve. Based on what they did, there will be a lot of confidence. They will increase the effort and you will see a good team play against England. I’m certain about that,” he added.

Ghana will face England on June 23 in a match that could prove decisive in determining the Black Stars’ path in the tournament.

2026 WC: Thomas-Asante eyes more starts after decisive impact in Ghana’s win over Panama https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-thomas-asante-eyes-more-starts-after-decisive-impact-in-ghanas-win-over-panama/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 11:32:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674320 Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante has acknowledged the importance of accepting squad roles but admits he is eager to earn more starting opportunities after making a telling impact off the bench in Ghana’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup victory.

The Coventry City attacker was introduced in the second half against Panama and went on to provide the assist for Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday, sealing a crucial 1-0 win for the West Africans.

Reflecting on his performance, Thomas-Asante said he would have preferred to get on the scoresheet but was satisfied with contributing to the team’s success.

“I just wanted to do what I did, really. I would have probably liked a goal as well, but the main thing was the win,” he said after the game.

He emphasised the need to be ready whenever called upon, noting that his career has often required him to influence matches as a substitute, even though his ambition remains to start regularly.

“My style of play, I’m very fortunate that a lot of times in my career, even if I’m on the bench, there’s an opportunity to come and impact the game. Obviously, I want to start every game, but in my career, you know, that is not how football works.

“You have to be ready for any occasion, and today my job was to try and impact it from the bench, and I’m happy that I could contribute in some way.”

The forward also praised Ghana’s collective effort, highlighting the defensive discipline and perseverance that kept the game level before the decisive moment late on.

“It’s about the team performance because to go to that point at 0-0, defending solidly, having a few chances, that is what the team did before I came on, so credit to them and to Caleb for the goal.”

The victory places Ghana second in Group L behind England, who opened their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia.

Attention now shifts to a high-stakes meeting with England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, before Ghana conclude their group stage against Croatia four days later.

With three points already secured, Carlos Queiroz’s side will look to build momentum as they pursue a first knockout-stage appearance since their run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

World Cup 2026: Black Stars can achieve something special after win over Panama – Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/world-cup-2026-black-stars-can-achieve-something-special-after-win-over-panama-carlos-queiroz/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 10:42:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674286 Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has expressed optimism that his side can achieve something significant at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after opening their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto.

The four-time African champions were second best for long spells at BMO Field but still managed to claim all three points, with Caleb Yirenkyi striking a late winner to seal the result despite sustained pressure from the Central American side.

Speaking after the match, Queiroz suggested the performance—though uneven—hinted at greater possibilities for his team.

“With the football we played today, we can count on Ghana to do something,” the former Egypt, Iran and Colombia boss told the press after the game.

Ghana were forced into a first-half change in goal after Ati-Zigi suffered a collision, paving the way for Benjamin Asare to step in after the break.

Queiroz admitted uncertainty over the goalkeeper’s availability for the next fixture against England.

“Not sure,” Queiroz said. “It is early, and this kind of injury, it is only after 24 to 48 hours that we can be sure.”

The 73-year-old, who was not initially expected to lead Ghana at the tournament, only took charge in April after the dismissal of Otto Addo following a string of poor results.

The win places Ghana second in Group L behind England, who began their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia.

Attention now turns to a decisive Group L showdown with England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before Ghana conclude their group stage against Croatia four days later.

The result offers Ghana a timely boost in their bid to reach the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, he said decisions made by the technical team should be respected, as they have access to information fans may not be aware of.

“I think you don’t know, and I also might not know what happens in the camp. The coach knows when to make changes,” he said.

Akonnor noted that public complaints and discussions about selection are part of football and can help technical handlers make better decisions.

“All these things are good signs. Once fans are making complaints, it goes to the ears of the head coach, and he looks at it and takes decisions,” he explained.

He stressed that football involves everyone, including fans, coaches, and stakeholders.

“Football is not for one person. The fans and everyone are part of it,” he added.

According to him, goalkeeping decisions are particularly sensitive and rarely changed without strong reasons.

“This area is very sensitive. Hardly will you see a team bring a goalkeeper in and take him out immediately. We don’t know exactly why it happened,” he noted.

However, he maintained that the most important thing is Ghana’s victory, adding that the coaching staff will continue to review their decisions.

“We have come out with a win, and it means the decisions they took worked. The coach will look at the areas that need improvement and move forward,” he said.

Akonnor also praised Ghana’s tactical discipline, especially their ability to defend without the ball.

“What they did well was how they played without the ball. They were very intelligent, and that is a good sign for the team,” he stated.

He expressed optimism that the team will improve in their next match as they continue to adjust and build momentum.

“I am sure they will look at the improvements needed. The next game they will be stronger, tougher, and better prepared,” he added.

Ghana sealed a 1-0 win over Panama after a stoppage-time goal from Caleb Yirenkyi, assisted by Brandon Thomas-Asante, in the 95th minute.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, he said the team showed strong tactical discipline, especially in their defensive work without the ball.

“I think they did well in the sense that they covered a lot of areas. They played very well without the ball,” he said.

Akonnor noted that the players worked extremely hard and deserved credit for their effort throughout the match.

“When you work so hard, sometimes you are rewarded,” he added.

He also praised the timing of Ghana’s late winner, describing it as a perfect moment in the game.

“The time they got the goal was very good for us. The match was almost over,” he said.

According to him, the team’s willingness to sacrifice and support each other was key to the victory.

“They sacrificed a lot in terms of running and covering for each other,” he stated.

Akonnor further said the win is an important confidence boost for the squad as they prepare for their next group match.

“I always say you have to start well by winning, and I think this is a motivation. They go into the next match knowing they have won their first game, and it is an encouragement for them,” he said.

He admitted that most of the players have limited World Cup experience but praised their character and determination.

“Majority of the players have not had too much experience at the World Cup, only a few have. But they showed character, and that is what I admire about the team,” he noted.

Not the best of performance, but… – George Afriyie on Ghana’s win over Panama [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/not-the-best-of-performance-but-george-afriyie-on-ghanas-win-over-panama-audio/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 10:33:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674265 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President, George Afriyie, has urged Ghanaians to remain supportive of the national team following Ghana’s victory over Panama in their Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, he said patriotic citizens should continue to support the team and pray for injury-free football as the tournament progresses.

“If you are a patriotic citizen, you should watch the match and pray for injury-free football,” he stated.

Afriyie noted that Ghana is currently building a young squad with several new players, adding that multiple challenges have affected the team’s preparation and performance.

“We need to accept that we have a very young team and almost an entirely new set of players. So many factors are going against us,” he said.

He explained that injuries to key players have also weakened the squad, affecting stability in crucial positions.

“In a World Cup team, you don’t miss six to eight key players like we are experiencing. Players like Salisu and Agyekum would have formed a strong centre-back partnership, just like they did in Qatar,” he noted.

He added that availability of players such as Gideon Mensah or Baba Rahman would have strengthened the defence, while Thomas Partey’s absence has also affected the midfield.

“If Partey was available, we would have stability in the middle of the park. Unfortunately, he is not part of the tournament,” he said.

Mr. Afriyie further argued that Ghana’s lack of adequate preparation and friendly matches also contributed to the team’s struggles compared to other nations.

“Some of our opponents played several preparatory matches before the World Cup, but the same cannot be said of Ghana,” he said.

Despite the challenges, he urged the players to remain motivated after their victory.

“The boys should take inspiration from this win. They should watch videos of the celebrations and understand that the whole country expects more from them,” he added.

Ghana secured a 1-0 win over Panama at Toronto Stadium, with a stoppage-time goal from Caleb Yirenkyi sealing all three points in Group L. The result marked a strong start for coach Carlos Queiroz, although he admitted his team endured long spells without possession before executing their game plan.

The Black Stars began their Group L campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, thanks to a late strike from midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.

After struggling to impose themselves in the first half, Ghana showed resilience and determination to secure all three points, with Yirenkyi netting the decisive goal in stoppage time.

Looking ahead to the crucial encounter against England, Queiroz warned that his side must be ready to endure difficult moments and make significant sacrifices if they are to continue their winning start.

“To suffer and play. We have to suffer; there is no other way. We must be ready to make sacrifices,” he said.

“You have to be ready to pay the price because a win in this World Cup is very expensive. But the boys are ready to pay that price. Very expensive,” he said.

The victory over Panama puts Ghana in a strong position in Group L after England opened their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia.

Attention now turns to the much-anticipated clash with England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before the Black Stars conclude their group-stage campaign against Croatia four days later.

With three points already secured, Ghana will be eager to build momentum and boost their chances of advancing to the knockout stage for the first time since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The night a nation refused to break: Ghana vs Panama game https://www.adomonline.com/the-night-a-nation-refused-to-break-ghana-vs-panama-game/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 09:51:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674234 For 93 minutes, Ghana was not just playing Panama. Ghana was playing against disappointment. Against years of frustration. Against rising prices at home.

Against the doubts that followed the Black Stars from one tournament to another.
Against every Ghanaian who had whispered, “Maybe we are not the Ghana of old anymore.”

Then, in a single moment, everything changed. A ball fell kindly. A chance appeared, and Caleb Yirenkyi struck.

The net shook, Toronto exploded, and thousands of miles away, Ghana erupted.
From Accra to Kumasi, from Tamale to Takoradi, from London to New York, from Toronto to Amsterdam, hearts that had been carrying the weight of everyday struggles suddenly became light.

For one glorious moment, Ghana forgot its problems.

Football did what politics, economics and social media debates often fail to do.
It united everyone. The truth is that this victory was ugly. Painfully ugly.

There were moments when Panama looked more organized. There were moments when Ghana looked nervous.

There were moments when social media was flooded with criticism, frustration and anger.
Many fans questioned the team’s energy.

Others questioned tactical decisions. Some feared another World Cup heartbreak.

The comments reflected a nation that desperately wanted to believe but was afraid to be hurt again. Yet football has never been about perfection.

It has always been about belief. And belief kept Ghana alive. As the clock ticked into injury time, many supporters had already accepted a draw. Some had switched off their televisions.

Some had started typing disappointed posts. Then came the miracle. The goal. The release.
The scream. The tears. The Black Stars did not simply defeat Panama.

They defeated fear. This was more than three points. It was a reminder of who Ghanaians are. A people who know struggle. A people who know how to survive difficult times.

A people who continue to dream even when circumstances suggest otherwise.
For years, Ghanaian football has lived in the shadow of memories.

The magic of 2006. The heroics of 2010. The heartbreak against Uruguay. The disappointments that followed. Every generation has been compared with those legends.
Every squad has carried the burden of history.

But perhaps this World Cup is asking a different question: What if Ghana’s future does not need to look like its past? What if a new generation is quietly writing its own story?

Before this tournament, many analysts believed the battle for survival in Group L would come down to Ghana and Panama because heavyweights England and Croatia were expected to dominate.

That made this opening match feel like a final before the final. And Ghana answered.
Not beautifully. Not comfortably. But courageously.

Outside the stadium in Toronto, Ghanaian supporters had gathered with drums, flags and hope. Many had travelled long distances and spent money they could barely afford because watching Ghana at a World Cup is more than football—it is identity.

That identity was rewarded. Asamoah Gyan had urged Ghanaians before kickoff to put differences aside and rally behind the national team, calling football Ghana’s greatest unifying force.

On this night, his words felt prophetic. Because when Yirenkyi scored, nobody asked who someone voted for. Nobody asked their tribe.

Nobody asked whether they lived in Ghana or abroad. There was only one thing that mattered.

The flag. The jersey. The dream. The road ahead remains difficult. England waits.
Croatia waits. The real tests are still coming.

But Ghana now walks into those battles carrying something priceless: hope. And sometimes hope is stronger than tactics.

Stronger than statistics. Stronger than predictions.
On a rainy night in Toronto, Ghana did not just win a football match.
A nation remembered how to believe.
And in a world where many people are fighting silent battles every day, perhaps that was the greatest victory of all.
The scoreline will say Ghana 1, Panama 0.
History may remember it as something much bigger.
That night the Black Stars reignited the heart of a nation.

2026 WC: Carlos Queiroz hails Black Stars’ resilience after late winner sinks Panama https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-carlos-queiroz-hails-black-stars-resilience-after-late-winner-sinks-panama/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 09:44:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674128 Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has praised his players for their determination and tactical discipline following their dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars secured all three points at BMO Field in Toronto thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi, who emerged as the hero on a night when Panama controlled significant periods of the contest.

The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder struck in the fifth minute of added time, finishing from close range after Brandon Thomas-Asante spearheaded a swift counterattack and delivered an inviting cross into the penalty area.

Despite Panama’s dominance for large spells, Ghana remained disciplined and eventually capitalised on their opportunity to snatch a dramatic victory.

Reflecting on the performance, Queiroz acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents and revealed that his side had anticipated a difficult encounter.

“First half was to suffer against a great team. They know how to play, they know how to do things. We knew, we knew that they would control the game,” the 73-year-old said.

“But step by step, this was our strategy. To let them come and start to make the control, control, control, until we scored. Because this is the way to win,” he added.

The victory leaves Ghana second in Group L behind England, who began their campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia.

The Black Stars now shift their focus to two crucial group-stage fixtures, beginning with a showdown against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding the group phase against Croatia on June 27.

Having secured an important opening victory, Ghana will be aiming to build momentum and reach the knockout stages for the first time since their historic quarter-final appearance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Ivory Coast’s Wahi denied entry to Canada https://www.adomonline.com/ivory-coasts-wahi-denied-entry-to-canada/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 07:41:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674344 Ivory Coast international Elye Wahi has been denied entry to Canada for his country’s World Cup group game against Germany on Saturday.

The Nice forward was reportedly arrested last month before the World Cup over alleged involvement in spot-fixing in Ligue 1.

Wahi, 23 – who started Sunday’s World Cup win over Ecuador – has been accused of deliberately earning a yellow card while playing for Nice against Metz in May.

Spot-fixing is the practice of deliberately affecting match incidents in a way that allows people to profit through betting markets.

A statement to the Athletic from the public prosecutor’s office in Marseille confirmed a 23-year-old football player, competing in France’s Ligue 1, was arrested, without naming Wahi.

On Wednesday, Ligue de Football (LFP) confirmed they had been alerted to “an unusually high volume of bets placed on a warning involving the player Elye Wahi”.

The Ivory Coast’s football federation (FIF) say they had not been told of any “judicial or administrative proceedings” against Wahi, but confirmed he had not been able to obtain authorisation to enter Canada.

“The Ivorian Football Federation has taken note of the various articles and information published on this Wednesday, June 17, 2026, concerning the Ivorian international Elye Wahi,” it said in a statement.

“To date, the FIF has not been officially notified of any judicial or administrative proceedings involving him.

“In this particularly delicate period, the FIF extends all its support to the player and reaffirms its confidence in him. Elye Wahi remains an important element of the Ivory Coast national team.

“The FIF also informs that the player will not be able to join the delegation’s trip to Canada. Indeed, the necessary administrative authorisations for his entry into Canadian territory could not be obtained at this stage.

“Elye Wahi will therefore remain in the United States pending the team’s return.”

After facing Germany in Toronto, the Ivory Coast then play Curacao in Philadelphia next Thursday.

The statement from the Marseille public prosecutor’s office said the arrest was made “as part of an investigation opened by the Marseille public prosecutor’s office into allegations of organised fraud, organised sports corruption, handling of proceeds of crime and money laundering”.

The player was released after being interviewed in police custody and the investigations remain ongoing, officials added.

Wahi’s booking in the game was his fifth in the league so earned him a suspension for the first leg of Nice’s relegation play-off against Saint-Etienne on 26 May.

That game ended in a 0-0 draw but Wahi returned for the second leg in which he scored twice in a 4-1 victory to help Nice keep their place in the top flight.

BBC Sport has contacted Wahi’s representatives and Fifa for comment.

The LFP said: “At this stage, and given the ongoing investigation and the confidentiality requirements imposed by the police authorities, the LFP will not make any further comments and has not initiated disciplinary proceedings. However, it reserves the right to do so depending on the progress of the investigation.

“The LFP reiterates that it remains fully committed to ensuring the integrity of its competitions and that it will act with the utmost firmness against any behaviour that could compromise it.”

Wahi is the second World Cup player to be denied entry to Canada after Ghana’s Thomas Partey was refused a visa because of ongoing criminal proceedings in the UK.

Former Arsenal midfielder Partey pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to allegations by four different women between 2020 and 2022 and is scheduled to stand trial next year.

Partey wrongly told officials in Canada he had never been arrested or charged with a crime and missed Ghana’s World Cup win over Panama as a result.

The Ghanaian government sought permission for him to enter the country briefly to take part in the game but that appeal was rejected at a federal court in Ottawa.

2026 WC: Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time strike hands Ghana dramatic win over Panama https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-caleb-yirenkyis-stoppage-time-strike-hands-ghana-dramatic-win-over-panama/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 06:39:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674079 Ghana began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama after Caleb Yirenkyi scored a stoppage-time winner at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday night.

Just when the Group L contest appeared destined to end in a goalless draw, the Black Stars produced a decisive late counterattack, with Yirenkyi finding the net in the fifth minute of added time to secure all three points.

Panama made the brighter start and nearly took the lead inside two minutes. A dangerous low cross found Cecilio Waterman in space, but Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi reacted brilliantly to deny the forward with an early save.

The Central Americans continued to dominate possession and dictated much of the first half, enjoying lengthy spells on the ball while limiting Ghana’s attacking opportunities. The Black Stars struggled to create openings and failed to register a shot throughout the opening 45 minutes.

Ati-Zigi remained Ghana’s standout performer during the first half, producing several important interventions and bravely dealing with aerial deliveries despite a heavy collision with Carlos Harvey.

The St. Gallen goalkeeper later appeared to suffer a thigh injury and received treatment before continuing. However, he was unable to complete the match and was replaced at the start of the second half by Benjamin Asare, who made his World Cup debut.

Ghana showed greater attacking intent after the break. Defender Jonas Adjetey tested Panama’s goalkeeper with a header, marking Ghana’s first effort on target.

The introduction of Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Brandon Thomas-Asante further lifted the Black Stars, with Fatawu causing problems down the flanks through his pace and direct running. His attacking threat forced Panama defender Cesar Blackman into a booking after a foul near the edge of the penalty area.

Otto Addo’s side continued to push forward and almost found a breakthrough when Antoine Semenyo delivered a dangerous cross across the face of goal, but defender Edgardo Ramos intervened to prevent Jordan Ayew from converting.

Panama also threatened at the other end, with Cristian Martínez coming close when his effort rattled the side netting.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, both teams appeared set to settle for a point. However, Ghana delivered the decisive moment in the 95th minute.

After breaking up a Panama attack, Brandon Thomas-Asante surged down the left flank, skipped past a challenge and drove a low ball into the penalty area. Yirenkyi, who had stepped into the team following Thomas Partey’s absence from the tournament, arrived at the perfect moment to fire home from close range.

The late strike sparked wild celebrations among the Ghana supporters in Toronto and handed the four-time African champions a crucial victory in their opening fixture.

The result puts Ghana in a strong position in Group L, while denying Panama what would have been their first-ever World Cup point.

In the group’s other match, England defeated Croatia 4-2 to move top of the standings.

Ghana will now prepare for a highly anticipated clash against England on June 23, while Panama will look to bounce back when they face Croatia on the same day.

Ronaldo Nazario: Time to accept Messi is the GOAT https://www.adomonline.com/ronaldo-nazario-time-to-accept-messi-is-the-goat/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 06:05:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674262 Ronaldo, the legendary former Brazil striker, believes that Lionel Messi is the undisputed greatest player of all time, claiming the Argentina captain’s latest masterclass for his country has put the debate beyond doubt.

On a day when France’s Kylian Mbappe and Norway’s Erling Haaland both scored twice, Messi went one better by netting his first-ever hat-trick at a FIFA World Cup as the defending champions beat Algeria 3-0 to get their campaign off to a winning start.

In doing so, the 38-year-old equalled Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals in Kansas City. With the second of his three strikes, the Inter Miami forward went level with Brazil great Ronaldo across his six World Cup appearances.

Messi will have the opportunity to claim sole possession of the record in Argentina’s remaining Group J fixtures against Austria and Jordan.

However, he will be looking over his shoulder at Mbappe, who moved onto 14 goals with a brace against Senegal and could yet strengthen his own challenge when Les Bleus face Iraq on Monday.

Speaking after witnessing history, former Real Madrid and Internazionale striker Ronaldo spoke in glowing terms about the Argentina maestro, claiming that the age-old debate over who is the world’s greatest player of all time is now over.

“Every time Messi steps on the pitch, the rest becomes historic and elegant,” said Ronaldo. “It’s time for the world to stop hiding and accept the fact that he’s the greatest player of all time.

“What he does on the pitch defies all logic. Watching him play at this level, with the calmness and clarity he does it with, is an absolute privilege for anyone who loves football.

“He continues to perform every season and in the World Cup, however, there are still doubts about him. It is an unforgettable and historic night that will go down in the history books forever.”

Debate has raged over whether Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo hold the crown as the world’s greatest.

Aged 41 years and 132 days old, Ronaldo is over two years Messi’s senior and the Al Nassr forward began his sixth World Cup finals against DR Congo on Wednesday in Houston.

With five Ballon d’Or trophies to his name following a glittering career – his last coming in 2017 – Ronaldo has a claim to the throne, but with Portugal, he has managed just eight goals to date on the world’s biggest stage.

Given the widespread adulation for the former Manchester United forward, who has 973 senior goals for club and country, the careers of two of the game’s very best are often intertwined and viewed as being on a par. The Portuguese has 143 goals to his name at international level, 23 more than Messi.

But Messi has the same number of Ballon D’Ors – eight – as the other 1,247 players combined taking part at this summer’s World Cup, and it is his longevity which Ronaldo Nazario believes must now count in his favour.

“Records are made to be broken and the person who breaks it does not surprise any football fan in the world,” the Brazilian added.

“In addition, Argentina is the current reigning champion of the competition. Argentina has a great team, but he is still the difference-maker. At his age, he maintains a winning mentality that sets him apart from the rest.”

Messi ‘class is permanent’

Argentina were beaten by Saudi Arabia in their opening game of the 2022 World Cup, but went on to lift the trophy in Qatar as Messi inspired his country to victory against France on penalties in the final.

There were no such problems this time for The Albiceleste and for Messi there was a neat symmetry of him becoming the oldest goalscorer for his country at a World Cup, exactly 20 years to the day since he became the youngest, making his debut as an 18-year-old at Germany 2006.

Speaking after his side were beaten in Kansas City, Algeria head coach Vladimir Petkovic said: “Class is permanent, because we’re not talking about any old player here, we’re talking about a footballer who has won the Ballon d’Or seven or eight times in his career.

“Unfortunately, we also afforded him an opportunity with the first and second goal, and we made it easier for him to score the goals. But Messi, with his clear thinking at crucial stages of the game, can do things that much more easily.

“He has the privilege that the entire Argentina team works for him and supports him, and for several years, nay for decades, he’s been doing incredible things. Argentina had 10 shots today, and seven of those shots came from Messi.”

2026 WC: We won the game with our brains – Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz after late win over Panama https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-won-the-game-with-our-brains-ghana-coach-carlos-queiroz-after-late-win-over-panama/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 03:42:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674125 Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has lauded his side’s resilience and tactical discipline after the Black Stars snatched a late 1-0 win over Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions endured a difficult evening at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday, struggling to assert control as Panama dictated large spells of a disjointed contest.

After a largely subdued first half and sustained pressure from the Central American side, Ghana eventually found the breakthrough deep into stoppage time when Caleb Yirenkyi struck the decisive goal to secure all three points.

Despite the narrow victory marking a strong start to Queiroz’s World Cup tenure with Ghana, the Portuguese coach admitted his team were forced to weather long periods without possession before executing their match plan.

“We battled like warriors,” Queiroz told ITV during a post-match interview.

“We won the game with our brains. First, we had to suffer against a great team.

“They know how to play. We knew they would control the game. But step by step, our strategy was to let them come. This is the way to win.”

The result places Ghana second in Group L behind England, who recorded a 4-2 win over Croatia in their opening fixture.

Attention now turns to a decisive run of matches, with Ghana set to face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before wrapping up their group campaign against Croatia on June 27.

With three points already secured, the Black Stars will look to build momentum as they chase a return to the knockout stages for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

2026 WC: England tie will be difficult – Antoine Semenyo https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-england-tie-will-be-difficult-antoine-semenyo/ Thu, 18 Jun 2026 03:31:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674121 Ghana winger Antoine Semenyo has called for calm and focus within the Black Stars camp ahead of their clash against England despite their hard-fought opening victory over Panama at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions began their Group L campaign with a narrow 1-0 win at BMO Field in Toronto, where Caleb Yirenkyi struck late to seal all three points in a tense encounter that had appeared destined for a goalless draw.

Speaking after the match, where he was named Man of the Match, Semenyo stressed the need for discipline and humility as Ghana prepare for tougher challenges ahead, beginning with a high-profile meeting against England.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game,” Semenyo stated when questioned about the Three Lions.

“We are not going to be ahead of ourselves. We want to win that game, but we know it’s not going to be easy,” the Manchester City forward added.

Ghana’s victory places them in a strong position in Group L, with crucial fixtures against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 and Croatia on June 27 still to come.

The result also boosts hopes of a first knockout-stage appearance since Ghana’s memorable run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The FC Nordsjaelland youngster emerged as Ghana’s match-winner at BMO Field, striking late to secure all three points in a tightly contested encounter under head coach Carlos Queiroz.

For long spells, the four-time African champions struggled to break down a well-organised Panamanian side, with chances few and far between in a cagey affair.

But Ghana’s persistence eventually paid off when Yirenkyi finished off a rehearsed move, sealing a winning start to their tournament campaign.

Speaking after the game, the 18-year-old midfielder pointed to repeated work in training as the foundation for the decisive goal.

“I think that’s why we are practising a lot. We started our preparation to get the ball to the middle. And then put it in the box,” Yirenkyi said.

“And then we get to run. And then the ball goes to the finish line. I think that’s what we’ve been doing,” the 18 year oid added.

The result gives Ghana an early boost in Group L as attention now turns to tougher tests ahead against England and Croatia.

The Black Stars face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27, with momentum on their side as they chase a first knockout-stage appearance since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The four-time African champions kicked off their Group L campaign at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday and secured all three points thanks to a dramatic late winner from Caleb Yirenkyi.

Semenyo emerged as Ghana’s standout performer, producing an energetic and disciplined performance on the right flank throughout the contest.

The Manchester City attacker consistently troubled Panama’s defence with his pace, direct running and relentless work rate, providing one of Ghana’s most potent attacking outlets.

The forward also played a crucial role in the decisive moment of the match. His movement stretched the Panama backline before Abdul Fatawu Issahaku delivered a pass that found Yirenkyi, who struck in the fifth minute of stoppage time to hand Ghana a memorable opening victory.

Named in Carlos Queiroz’s starting lineup alongside four World Cup debutants, Semenyo combined his attacking threat with defensive responsibility, frequently tracking back to support Marvin Senaya while driving Ghana forward whenever opportunities arose.

His all-round display was central to a disciplined team performance that saw the Black Stars maintain a clean sheet and begin their World Cup journey on a positive note.

The result places Ghana in a strong position ahead of their remaining Group L fixtures. The Black Stars will next face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

With an opening win secured, Ghana remain firmly focused on reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Kane, Bellingham catch the eye but Konsa struggles – England player ratings https://www.adomonline.com/kane-bellingham-catch-the-eye-but-konsa-struggles-england-player-ratings/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 22:57:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674074 England kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 4-2 win over Croatia on Wednesday night, as goals from Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford secured all the spoils for the Three Lions.

Kane struck from the spot early on after Luka Modric had fouled Noni Madueke. The England captain’s initial effort was saved by Dominik Livakovic, but he was handed a second chance because the Croatia shotstopper had come off his line before the ball was kicked.

Madueke was again involved as England pushed for a second as he put in a teasing low cross for Bellingham, who came close to getting on the end of the Arsenal man’s ball.

Croatia were level with 10 minutes of the half to go after Martin Baturina brilliantly rifled past Jordan Pickford from 20 yards. However, their joy lasted only five minutes as Kane powered a fine Declan Rice corner past Livakovic.

Zlatko Dalic’s side came from behind for a second time in the opening 45 after Ivan Perisic beat the offside trap to tee up Petar Musa. He made no mistake from close range seconds before half-time.

Bellingham, though, put England back in front five minutes after the break, beating Livakovic from a tight angle. Tuchel’s side huffed and puffed for a fourth, but were met by an inspired Livakovic, who kept Nico O’Reilly, Rice and Kane at bay.

It was not until the 85th minute, however, that England stretched their advantage as substitute Marcus Rashford kept his composure to add the Three Lions’ fourth and wrap up the three points.

2026 WC: Ronaldo fires blank as Portugal held to shock draw by DR Congo https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-ronaldo-fires-blank-as-portugal-held-to-shock-draw-by-dr-congo/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 19:37:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2674052 Yoanne Wissa’s emphatic header proved pivotal as the Democratic Republic of the Congo earned their first-ever FIFA World Cup point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Portugal in Houston.

On a night he became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match, Cristiano Ronaldo failed to live up to the matchday-one goalscoring heights of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Ronaldo fired a blank in the Group K opener and Selecao das Quinas left Texas with just one point, despite taking a sixth-minute lead when Joao Neves headed in from an inviting Pedro Neto cross.

At that moment, Portugal, among the favourites to win the competition, were confident they could go on to win the game comfortably.

But DR Congo had other ideas, reacting superbly and showing great bravery to press high, stopping Portugal from developing any rhythm whatsoever.

Wissa equalised with the last touch of the first half and you can’t say it wasn’t deserved, as DR Congo netted as a result of a pinpoint Arthur Masuaku cross from a clever short corner.

Portugal’s struggles continued way into the second half as DR Congo stopped A Selecao from registering any further shots on target, all while looking a threat on the counter-attack.

The Leopards earned their nickname through showing strength, power and resilience on behalf of their nation.

They exhibited those qualities in abundance in Houston, going toe-to-toe with Portugal and pocketing one of the greatest players the world has ever seen.

Those DR Congo fans won’t be forgetting that one for a very long time indeed.

2026 WC: Ghana High Commission distributes tickets to supporters across Canada https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-ghana-high-commission-distributes-tickets-to-supporters-across-canada/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 16:02:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673979 The Ghana High Commission in Ottawa has successfully distributed FIFA World Cup tickets provided by President John Dramani Mahama to Ghanaian supporters across Canada, giving members of the diaspora community the opportunity to cheer on the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The initiative comes as Ghana prepares to begin its World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto on Wednesday, June 17.

In a statement, the High Commission confirmed that the tickets made available by President Mahama had been allocated to beneficiaries in different parts of Canada as part of efforts to mobilise support for the national team during the tournament.

The Mission expressed appreciation to the President for what it described as a thoughtful gesture that has enabled many Ghanaians living abroad to experience the World Cup firsthand while rallying behind the Black Stars.

According to the High Commission, the initiative has given members of the Ghanaian community in Canada the chance to be part of a significant moment in the country’s football history and demonstrate their support for the national team on the global stage.

“The tickets generously provided by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama have afforded many Ghanaians the opportunity to be part of this historic occasion and to proudly support the national team,” the statement said.

The High Commission also acknowledged the roles played by Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, whose collaboration and support helped make the initiative possible.

Officials commended the two ministers for their efforts in ensuring the smooth implementation of the programme and a fair distribution process.

According to the statement, tickets were distributed through recognised Ghanaian community associations across Canada, while additional beneficiaries were selected through a random draw from individuals who had earlier expressed interest via email.

The High Commission said the process was designed to ensure fairness and inclusivity, allowing Ghanaians from various regions of Canada an opportunity to benefit from the limited allocation.

The Mission noted that interest in the tickets far exceeded the number available, highlighting the strong enthusiasm and patriotism of Ghanaians in the diaspora.

However, it acknowledged that due to the limited allocation, not all applicants could be accommodated.

The Black Stars will be hoping to draw inspiration from the expected support of Ghanaian fans in Canada as they begin their quest for success on football’s biggest stage.

Thomas Partey will not have Villarreal contract renewed, set to become free agent https://www.adomonline.com/thomas-partey-will-not-have-villarreal-contract-renewed-set-to-become-free-agent/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 15:33:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673958 Villarreal are not intending to renew Thomas Partey’s contract for a further season, leaving the player without a club from the end of this month.

The 33-year-old, who is currently at the World Cup with Ghana, signed a one-year deal with the Spanish side in the summer of 2025 after his departure from Arsenal, with the option of a further 12 months.

However, the La Liga club are not planning to take up their option in Partey’s deal and he is set to become a free agent.

Partey made 32 appearances for Villarreal last season, five of which came in the Champions League – including a return to north London to face Tottenham Hotspur in September. In the 2025-26 season, Villarreal finished third in La Liga, their highest finish in 13 years.

Partey was charged in the UK with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in July 2025. In September of that year, he pleaded not guilty.

He was charged with two new counts of rape in February this year, to which he pleaded not guilty in April.

His trial at Southwark Crown Court is scheduled for June 2027. Partey denies any wrongdoing and his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman and Rose, has previously said in a statement that her client welcomes “the opportunity to finally clear his name”.

Villarreal’s decision to sign Partey drew criticism in Spain, the UK and elsewhere.

Club president Fernando Roig defended the move, saying in August: “The player finds himself in a legal process, he maintains his innocence and denies the accusations.

“It is for the British justice system to determine what happened. At the moment, Partey is as innocent as the rest of us here. Respecting the presumption of innocence is a fundamental value at Villarreal. ”

The Athletic reported in September that one well-placed source within the Villarreal dressing room said some players had expressed reservations about having Partey as a team-mate.

Last week, The Athletic exclusively revealed that Partey had been denied entry to Canada, meaning he would not be able to travel with team-mates to Toronto for Ghana’s game against Panama on June 17.

A subsequent appeal to overturn Partey’s ban from entering the country wasdismissed on Tuesday, meaning that he will play no part in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup opener.

Failure to beat Panama in World Cup group stage will be disappointing – Black Stars told https://www.adomonline.com/failure-to-beat-panama-in-world-cup-group-stage-will-be-disappointing-black-stars-told/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 15:14:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673957 Ghanaian football fans in Kumasi say anything less than victory against Panama in the World Cup group stage will be a major disappointment for the Black Stars as the team prepares for a crucial encounter.

Expectations are high ahead of the Black Stars’ opening Group L clash, with many supporters insisting that failure to secure all three points would be a bitter setback for Ghana’s qualification hopes.

Speaking ahead of the game, fans said the match is vital to Ghana’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage, adding that the team cannot afford to drop points against an opponent they are expected to beat.

“Failure to win against Panama will disappoint Ghanaians. We need three points if we are serious about qualifying from the group. We need goals, confidence, and the boys to show they are ready for the world stage. If we fail to win this match, it will be difficult to qualify from the group,” said Robert, a supporter at Tech Station.

Another fan, Nana Hemaa, expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ attacking strength ahead of the fixture.

“Ghana will score against Panama today, and Semenyo and Jordan Ayew will be the goal scorers,” she said.

A station master at Tech Junction, Mr. Red, also noted that while Panama will put up a strong fight, Ghana has the experience and quality to win.

“We respect them, but the Black Stars have more quality. If we don’t win this one, then qualifying from the group will become very difficult,” he said.

Some fans also reacted to the absence of vice-captain Thomas Partey, who will miss the opener after being denied entry into Canada.

According to them, his absence should not prevent Ghana from securing victory, although it may have some impact on the team.

“Partey is a big loss, but we have enough quality in the squad to get the job done,” one supporter said.

The Black Stars are expected to approach the game with urgency, knowing that every point will be crucial in the group stage.

The Ghana Football Association has urged supporters to rally behind the team, with kick-off scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, at 11:00 a.m. in Toronto.

The Panama fixture forms part of Ghana’s Group L campaign at the FIFA World Cup, with the Black Stars aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the third time in their history, having reached the Round of 16 in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2010.

He returned in the 60th minute, this time showcasing his trademark movement and sharp positioning to double the lead and put the game further out of reach.

He then completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute with a clinical strike that the keeper dared not save.

The performance saw Messi etch his name even deeper into World Cup history, and reenforcing the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) debate.

Thomas Partey’s visa saga a major distraction ahead of Ghana’s World Cup opener – Berekum West MP https://www.adomonline.com/thomas-parteys-visa-saga-a-major-distraction-ahead-of-ghanas-world-cup-opener-berekum-west-mp/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 13:55:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673903 Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere Duah, has expressed deep disappointment over the growing attention surrounding Thomas Partey’s visa troubles, describing the situation as an unfortunate distraction at a critical moment for Ghana’s national team ahead of their FIFA World Cup campaign.

The Black Stars are set to begin their quest for a successful run at the global tournament when they face Panama on Wednesday, June 17, in Toronto, Canada.

However, preparations for the crucial opener have been overshadowed by the absence of midfielder Thomas Partey, who is set to miss the match after reportedly being denied entry into Canada.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Kyere Duah lamented that discussions surrounding Partey’s immigration difficulties had eclipsed conversations about the team’s preparations, tactics and the wave of support being shown to the squad.

“I am very sad this morning. Instead of talking about tactics, talking about goodwill messages, talking about that beautiful message from the Vice-President last night when she met the team and the way she rallied the players, Partey’s issue has become the distraction and is attracting more media attention than the preparation of the team itself,” he said.

“That is why I am very sad about the situation.”

The legislator noted that the development should serve as an important lesson to travellers and public officials alike regarding the need for consistency and accuracy when completing visa and immigration documentation.

“What I want to say is that this is a lesson to all of us. When you are filling out these forms, there are a number of questions. For instance, for the United States, there are forms where you even have to provide the date of birth of your father,” he explained.

“Whatever information you provide, you should be consistent with it. These are some of the most important things authorities look at during applications. When there is any semblance of deception, it raises red flags.”

Mr Kyere Duah acknowledged that the matter had become public knowledge and stressed the need for the nation to move forward and focus on the team’s immediate objectives.

“So Partey’s issue is no secret. Everybody knows. It is a sad day that he is not part of the team,” he said.

Despite Partey’s absence, the Berekum West MP remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances against Panama, insisting that the Black Stars possess enough quality within their ranks to cope without one of their most experienced players.

“I still think that in his absence, there are equally competent replacements in the team. Let us rally behind the team and put Partey’s issue in the freezer. After this match, we will look at the way forward,” he added.

The controversy comes at a time when Ghana is seeking to make a strong statement on the world stage.

The Black Stars arrived in Canada amid high expectations from supporters back home, with government officials and football stakeholders urging unity and support for the squad.

As kick-off approaches in Toronto, attention will now turn to whether Ghana can put the off-field distraction behind them and secure a positive result against Panama in their opening fixture.

The President also highlighted the unifying power of football, pointing to support from communities across the country, from Chorkor to Bole, and the sense of national pride generated by the team’s journey.

Mahama further called on Ghanaian supporters in North America, especially those in Toronto and surrounding areas, to rally behind the team and create a strong presence in the stands as the “12th man.”

He also disclosed that government is working to secure broadcasting arrangements to ensure that Ghanaians across the country can follow the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign.

In his closing remarks, President Mahama urged the team to remain disciplined, believe in themselves, and play with pride for the nation and for future generations inspired by their journey.

“Go Black Stars,” the statement concluded.

Ghana begin their campaign against Panama before facing England on 23 June at Gillette Stadium and Croatia on 27 June, with hopes of reaching the knockout stages for the first time since their 2010 quarter-final run in South Africa.

Full text: Canadian Court’s ruling that dismissed Thomas Partey’s visa appeal https://www.adomonline.com/full-text-canadian-courts-ruling-that-dismissed-thomas-parteys-visa-appeal/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 11:37:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673849 Black Stars midfielder Thomas Teye Partey has suffered a setback in his efforts to join Ghana’s squad in Canada for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a Canadian Federal Court dismissed an urgent application challenging the refusal of his visa.

In a ruling delivered on June 16, 2026, Justice Roger R. Lafrenière rejected Partey’s request for expedited court intervention following a decision by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to deny him a Temporary Resident Visa.

Partey had asked the court to either fast-track his application or direct Canadian immigration authorities to urgently reconsider the decision, arguing that he needed clearance to travel and join the Black Stars ahead of Ghana’s opening World Cup match against Panama in Toronto.

However, the court ruled that it could not sidestep established immigration procedures or effectively grant a visa through an interim application.

According to the judgment, granting the relief sought by the Ghanaian midfielder would have denied the government sufficient opportunity to respond and would have bypassed important legal requirements, including the filing of complete records and the formal process for seeking judicial review.

Partey, who applied for the visa on May 21, 2026, under a FIFA invitation to join Ghana’s World Cup delegation, was denied entry on June 10 after Canadian immigration officials determined that he was inadmissible under the country’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Authorities cited serious criminal charges currently pending against the player in the United Kingdom, noting that if proven, the alleged offences would be considered indictable crimes under Canadian law.

Court records also indicated that immigration officials had raised concerns about inconsistencies in Partey’s application and requested additional information, including police records from the UK.

The ruling further noted that Partey initially answered “no” to questions about whether he had ever been arrested or charged, but later submitted documents showing that he was facing multiple criminal charges.

His legal team argued that the visa refusal was unfair and urged the court to allow him entry on humanitarian or temporary grounds so he could fulfil his national team obligations. They also sought expedited consideration of a request for reconsideration or a temporary resident permit.

The court, however, held that immigration inadmissibility decisions must follow due process and cannot be set aside simply to accommodate short-term sporting commitments.

Justice Lafrenière also found that Partey had failed to establish a serious issue for trial, stating that immigration officers were entitled to rely on reasonable grounds when assessing admissibility, even where no conviction had been secured.

The court further concluded that Partey had not demonstrated irreparable harm, observing that the difficulties he faced arose primarily from the criminal allegations themselves rather than the visa refusal.

On the balance of convenience, the judge ruled that Canada’s interest in enforcing its immigration laws outweighed the request for exceptional treatment.

The decision leaves Partey’s participation in Ghana’s World Cup matches in Canada uncertain unless another legal or administrative avenue succeeds.

Ghana opens its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Panama today, June 17.

2026 WC: We will beat Panama for Thomas Partey – Kwasi Sibo https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-will-beat-panama-for-thomas-partey-kwasi-sibo/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 10:23:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673792 Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo has pledged that the Black Stars will give everything to secure victory against Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in honour of teammate Thomas Partey.

Partey will miss Ghana’s Group L opener after failing to overturn a decision denying him entry into Canada. The 33-year-old was unable to travel with the squad to Toronto, leaving a significant gap in the team’s midfield ahead of the highly anticipated clash.

Sibo, who had been tipped to partner Partey in the centre of the park, said the squad remains united behind the former Arsenal midfielder and is determined to make him proud.

“Our brother has been through a lot, and we are always with him,” Sibo said.

“He is one of the biggest stars in our team, but for that, we have to make sure we win the game for him as a family and make him happy because he has been with us from the first day we started this campaign.”

“It hurts that we are playing our first game and he’s not with us. We are giving him our word,” he added.

Ghana head into the tournament eager to make a strong statement after disappointing recent World Cup campaigns.

The Black Stars will be hoping to begin with a positive result against Panama before facing England at Gillette Stadium on June 23.

They will then conclude their group-stage matches against Croatia on June 27 as they seek a place in the knockout rounds.

The four-time African champions are targeting their first appearance in the World Cup knockout stages since their memorable run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

Bawumia rallies behind Black Stars ahead of World Cup opener against Panama https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-rallies-behind-black-stars-ahead-of-world-cup-opener-against-panama/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 10:18:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673800 Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended his best wishes to the Black Stars as Ghana begins its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an opening fixture against Panama on Wednesday, June 17, in Toronto, Canada.

In a message of support to the national team, Dr. Bawumia described football as a powerful force that unites Ghanaians and brings people together across the world.

“Football has always been part of our identity as a nation. It unites us and connects people around the world,” he said.

Wishing the team success at the tournament, Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to make the country proud on football’s biggest stage.

“Black Stars, you have done it before and you can do it again. The nation is behind you, and I am also behind you. Go Black Stars and go for gold,” he stated.

His message joins a growing chorus of support from political leaders, football enthusiasts, and members of the Ghanaian community worldwide as the team prepares for its opening match.

The Black Stars will be hoping for a positive start against Panama as they seek to advance beyond the group stage and make a significant impact at the World Cup.

2026 WC: Caleb Yirenkyi is the ideal replacement for Thomas Partey – Laryea Kingston https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-caleb-yirenkyi-is-the-ideal-replacement-for-thomas-partey-laryea-kingston/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 09:59:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673761 Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has tipped Caleb Yirenkyi as the ideal candidate to replace Thomas Partey in the Black Stars midfield for their opening FIFA World Cup Group L clash against Panama.

Ghana will be without Partey for the crucial encounter after the midfielder was denied entry into Canada due to ongoing legal allegations of rape and sexual assault. Despite pleading not guilty, the former Arsenal star was unable to secure the necessary visa to travel with the team.

His absence leaves head coach Carlos Queiroz searching for alternatives ahead of the tournament opener, but Kingston believes FC Nordsjælland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has the qualities needed to step into the role seamlessly.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Kingston revealed his long-standing admiration for the youngster, having worked closely with him during his time at the Right to Dream Academy.

“We will miss him (Thomas Partey), though, but we have someone that they have not been using him well. They are playing him out of position. Caleb Yirenkyi,” he said.

“I worked with him for three years. I promoted him from the U-15s to the U-18s when I was working with Right to Dream.”

Kingston explained that Yirenkyi’s natural role is in central midfield, where he can dictate play and contribute effectively at both ends of the pitch.

“For me, he is a holding midfielder. When you watch him play at FC Nordsjælland, they play him in the middle. He has grown into a box-to-box midfielder; he gets closer to the opponent’s box, but he is a typical midfielder.”

“He works hard, and he is very good on the ball because he was well brought up. I gave him the opportunity at the U-18s, and he took it, so for me, his best position is in midfield. I think he will replace Thomas Partey very easily,” he added.

While Ghana prepare for life without Partey against Panama, there is optimism that the experienced midfielder could rejoin the squad for their second group match against England in Boston.

The Black Stars will conclude their Group L campaign with a final fixture against Croatia in Philadelphia as they aim to secure a place in the knockout stages.

2026 WC: Thomas Partey to miss Ghana’s opener after visa appeal rejected https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-thomas-partey-to-miss-ghanas-opener-after-visa-appeal-rejected/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 09:16:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673596 Thomas Partey will miss Ghana’s World Cup opener against Panama after wrongly telling officials in Canada he had never been arrested or charged with a crime.

Partey, 33, was denied entry to Canada before Wednesday’s match in Toronto because of ongoing criminal proceedings in the UK.

The Ghanaian government sought permission for him to enter the country briefly to take part in the game but that appeal was rejected at a federal court in Ottawa.

The appeal ruling said there was “no serious issue in the underlying refusal” of the visa and “the applicant failed to disclose that he is the subject of multiple criminal charges for sexual violence in the UK”.

Former Arsenal player Partey pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault relating to allegations by four different women between 2020 and 2022 and is due to stand trial next year.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) told the BBC: ”Canada has been consistent that hosting major events does not change Canada’s immigration laws.

“Every person seeking to come to Canada is assessed individually, based on the facts available and the law that applies.”

IRCC officials had written to Partey to express concerns about whether his application had met the requirement to “answer truthfully” and referenced legislation covering misrepresentation which could impact a visa.

The court also noted that under immigration rules “having reasonable grounds to believe that an offence has been committed is sufficient” and a conviction is not required “to find the applicant inadmissible”.

Partey, who now plays for Spanish side Villarreal, has played more than 50 times for Ghana having made his debut in June 2016.

Before the tournament, head coach Carlos Queiroz said he had no qualms over selecting Partey.

Asked about the issue again on Tuesday, he said: “My business is to play with the cards that I have in front of me.

“We are waiting for a decision. When the decision [arrives], we are ready.”

Ghana play England in Boston on 23 June and Croatia in Philadelphia on 27 June.

They could return to Canada in the last 32 if they finish as runners-up in Group L.

2026 WC: We are ready and prepared despite limited preparatory games – Carlos Queiroz https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-are-ready-and-prepared-despite-limited-preparatory-games-carlos-queiroz/ Wed, 17 Jun 2026 09:16:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2673628 Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has moved to reassure fans that Ghana are fully prepared for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even after playing just one friendly match in the build-up to the tournament.

Ghana concluded their preparations with a 1-1 draw against Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium, a result that served as their only warm-up fixture under Queiroz ahead of the global showpiece.

The limited number of preparatory matches has sparked debate, but the Portuguese tactician insists readiness is shaped by more than just friendlies, pointing instead to earlier games and the intensity of training sessions as key components of the team’s build-up.

“Yes, we played one game, but it was not the only game that the team played. There were other games before that we took lessons from,” Queiroz said.

Queiroz added that every training session contributes meaningfully to a team’s development, stressing the need to maximise available opportunities.

“In terms of preparation, life is simple for us in football. One training is better than zero, two is better than one, three is better than two, and so on.”

“Two games are better than one, three are better than two.”

“Two games are better than one, three are better than two.”

He further noted that when match opportunities are limited, coaches must rely more heavily on structured work on the training ground.

“But if you only have one game, you have to take the best of that situation. We play one game, we train more. If we play more games, we train less.”

Ghana begin their Group L campaign against Panama at BMO Field, with kick-off scheduled for 23:00 GMT, in a fixture that has drawn significant attention as the Black Stars aim for a strong start to their fifth World Cup appearance.

They will then face England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before wrapping up their group stage against Croatia on June 27, with the target of reaching the knockout phase for the first time since their historic quarter-final run in 2010.

The experienced Portuguese coach, who has previously managed at multiple World Cups, underlined his trust in his players to deliver when it matters most.
