Ghana are set to face the Three Lions on June 23 at Gillette Stadium in what is expected to be one of the standout fixtures of the group stage.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Chelsea star struck a balanced tone, praising England’s strength while making no secret of his hopes for his country.

“Hot? I don’t know, but I think it’s going to be a great game. A great match that everyone is looking forward to seeing. Hopefully it will be a good one, and the best team should win,” Essien said before adding with a smile, “I hope Ghana beats them.”

Essien also highlighted the quality and depth of England’s squad, even after several high-profile omissions from their final 26-man selection, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer and Harry Maguire.

“On a serious note, I think they have assembled the best players they could to represent the country, so yeah, it’s going to be an exciting one. We just have to sit back and enjoy the show.”

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, before taking on England and concluding the group stage against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.

The Black Stars are aiming to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 2010, having suffered back-to-back group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.

Carlos Queiroz’s side are currently in camp preparing for a pre-tournament friendly against Wales on June 2, with the coach expected to finalize his 26-man squad ahead of the tournament across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Losing Kobbie Mainoo to England unfortunate – GFA boss Kurt Okraku https://www.adomonline.com/losing-kobbie-mainoo-to-england-unfortunate-gfa-boss-kurt-okraku/ Wed, 27 May 2026 22:08:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666570 Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has expressed disappointment over Kobbie Mainoo’s decision to represent England rather than Ghana, ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Manchester United midfielder, who has Ghanaian heritage, has been named in England’s squad for the tournament scheduled to take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

His selection comes as part of a wider trend of players of African descent opting to play for European nations at international level.

Okraku, however, believes players with strong Ghanaian roots should commit to the Black Stars.

“Full-blooded Ghanaians should be representing their countries. That’s my clear opinion on representation when it comes to national teams in football,” he told Sky Sports.

While acknowledging England’s strength, he insisted Ghana would not be intimidated ahead of their group-stage meeting.

“But having said that, I think that England has a good team. It’s important we respect the manager and the experience that he brings on board, but what is also true is that they will meet a very, very competitive and determined Ghanaian side.”

Pressed further on Mainoo’s choice, Okraku added: “Well, it’s most unfortunate, to be honest.”

“I wish I never comment on it. I wish I never comment on such situations because for example when I watched the French national team win the World Cup, and the team is made up 11 Africans.  “It always tells me there’s a subject that has to be discussed.”

Ghana will face England in a highly anticipated Group L encounter on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, where Mainoo could line up against the country of his heritage.

2026 WC: England will face a determined Ghana team – Kurt Okraku https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-england-will-face-a-determined-ghana-team-kurt-okraku/ Wed, 27 May 2026 22:07:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666591 President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, says the Black Stars are capable of giving England a tough challenge when the two sides meet at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana are set to face the Three Lions in their second Group L fixture at Gillette Stadium on June 23, following their opening match against Panama in the USA, Canada and Mexico tournament.

Speaking to Sky Sports during a visit to the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom, Okraku praised England’s quality and acknowledged the influence of their coach Thomas Tuchel, while insisting Ghana will be highly competitive.

“I think that England has a good team. We must respect the manager and the experience that he brings on board,” he said.

“But what is also true is that they will meet a very, very competitive and determined Ghanaian side,” Okraku added.

Meanwhile, preparations for the tournament have already begun, with the Black Stars training in Cardiff ahead of their pre-World Cup friendly against Wales on June 2 under head coach Carlos Queiroz at Dragon Park.

The team is expected to remain in Wales for a week before travelling to the United States for the next phase of their buildup.

Queiroz is set to name his final 26-man squad on June 1.

Ghana, four-time African champions, are aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010, having suffered early exits in 2014 and 2022.

Gideon Mensah: Black Stars aim to show World Cup readiness against Wales https://www.adomonline.com/gideon-mensah-black-stars-aim-to-show-world-cup-readiness-against-wales/ Wed, 27 May 2026 22:05:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666580 Ghana defender Gideon Mensah says the national team is determined to demonstrate their preparedness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they take on Wales in an international friendly on June 2 in Cardiff.

The team, currently in camp in Wales as part of its final phase of preparations, will also face Jamaica in another warm-up fixture as they fine-tune their squad ahead of the global tournament.

Mensah, who plays at left-back, stressed that the upcoming matches offer an important opportunity for the squad to measure their level against strong international opposition.

“The expectation is very clear for me as a player, and then we as a team, we are working towards a very crucial tournament for us, for the country and for ourselves as players,” Mensah told the Ghana FA website.

“So, I mean, we are expecting that we go into the game, show to the Ghanaians and show to ourselves that we are ready to go and compete with whoever comes against us in the World Cup,” he added.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to name his final 26-man squad before the Wales encounter, as Ghana sharpens its plans for the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Ghana have been drawn in Group L, where they will face Panama, England and Croatia.

Their campaign begins on June 17 against Panama at BMO Field, before meetings with England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium and Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Ghana, twice eliminated at the group stage in 2014 and 2022, are aiming to break a decade-long wait for a return to the knockout rounds.

Depay in Netherlands World Cup squad, Frimpong misses out https://www.adomonline.com/depay-in-netherlands-world-cup-squad-frimpong-misses-out/ Wed, 27 May 2026 22:05:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666660 Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has included Corinthians forward Memphis Depay in his World Cup squad announced on Wednesday, but Liverpool wing-back Jeremie Frimpong misses out.

Depay, who is the Netherlands’ all-time top goalscorer with 55 goals, is short of match-fitness having only recently returned from a two-month injury-enforced absence.

The 32-year-old played 34 minutes on his return to Brazilian Serie A action last weekend.

He has endured a difficult year, scoring only once in 13 matches in 2026.

“I cannot leave out a player of his class if he is physically fit,” said Koeman.

Frimpong, though, misses out after an indifferent first season in the Premier League in a struggling Liverpool side.

Several others are missing due to injury, such as Tottenham forward Xavi Simons, Manchester United centre-back Matthijs De Ligt and Inter Milan defender Stefan De Vrij.

Fifteen of Koeman’s 26-man squad ply their trade in the Premier League, including captain Virgil van Dijk.

He is one of three Liverpool players in the squad, alongside Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, while Brighton are also represented by three players.

The Netherlands are in Group F alongside Japan, Sweden and Tunisia.

2026 WC: We must aim to play in the final – Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-must-aim-to-play-in-the-final-black-stars-defender-gideon-mensah/ Wed, 27 May 2026 22:03:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666585 Black Stars defender Gideon Mensah says the playing body is not heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup merely to participate, but to compete at the highest level, with ambitions stretching as far as the final.

The left-back, who plays for AJ Auxerre, believes progress must be measured step by step, starting with a strong group-stage showing before any talk of lifting the trophy.

The Ghana, four-time African champions, will make their fifth appearance at the global tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. They have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars are seeking to move beyond the group stage for the first time since 2010, having suffered early exits in both the 2014 and 2022 editions.

Speaking to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) website, Mensah stressed the need for realism blended with ambition.

“I mean, we are hoping that we do better than our last World Cup, which was to go out of the group stage, and then we take it from there,” Mensah said.

He added that while winning the tournament remains a dream, the immediate focus must be on qualification from the group.

“I mean, we can aim to go to the finals and to win the World Cup, but then it needs to start from somewhere,” Mensah said.

“So, if we are to go to the last World Cup, then I think we have to also focus on getting out of the group stage and then from there we can look into what will happen,” he added.

As part of their build-up, the Black Stars have opened camp in Cardiff and will face Wales in a friendly on June 2. Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to name his final 26-man squad before the match.

Ghana begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before meeting England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and concluding their group fixtures against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Mateta fires Palace to Conference League glory in Glasner farewell https://www.adomonline.com/mateta-fires-palace-to-conference-league-glory-in-glasner-farewell/ Wed, 27 May 2026 22:02:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666621 Jean-Philippe Mateta fired Crystal Palace to their first European trophy as the Eagles edged out Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League final.

The France striker turned home a close-range winner on the rebound from an Adam Wharton strike early in the second half in Leipzig.

Outgoing Palace boss Oliver Glasner leaves the club having led them to the FA Cup, Community Shield and now Conference League in a remarkable two-and-a-half-year spell at Selhurst Park.

Both teams were competing in their first European final and so the cagey start to proceedings at Red Bull Arena – the home of RB Leipzig – was perhaps unsurprising.

Alemao turned a half-decent opportunity wide before Unai Lopez placed an effort past the post in the Spanish side’s best opportunities of the first half.

But the clearest chance of the opening 45 minutes fell to Palace just before the break, when Tyrick Mitchell headed wide after Wharton had found him with a superb ball into the box.

Palace took the lead just six minutes into the second half when Wharton’s strike was palmed into Mateta’s path by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla and the forward diverted it into the net.

It was Mateta’s 16th goal of the season for Palace – and he almost left the club in January before a knee injury scuppered a move to AC Milan.

Yeremy Pino then hit both posts with a free-kick before teeing up Mateta for another chance, but this time Batalla pulled off a fine save.

Rayo, who have the lowest budget in La Liga, struggled to create any real chances late on as Palace held on for their historic moment – and delivered for Glasner in his final game as Eagles boss.

2026 WC: Ghana has a good team to beat group opponents – Majeed Waris https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-ghana-has-a-good-team-to-beat-group-opponents-majeed-waris/ Wed, 27 May 2026 22:00:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666527 Former Ghana international Abdul Majeed Waris has expressed confidence in the Black Stars’ ability to make a strong impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana, who will be making their fifth appearance at the tournament to be hosted in the USA, Canada and Mexico, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Mexico.

The Black Stars are hoping to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their historic run to the quarter-finals at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Ghana suffered group-stage exits in both the 2014 tournament in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Speaking to Citi Sports, the former FC Porto forward said Ghana possess the quality needed to compete against every team in the group.

“I wouldn’t say that because I think we have a good team to win each of those games,” he said.

“What it comes down to is the preparation and then focusing mentally because at that stage you cannot switch off even for a minute because that can turn everything around,” Waris added.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars have commenced preparations in Cardiff ahead of their pre-World Cup friendly against Wales on June 2. Head coach Carlos Queiroz has been supervising training sessions at Dragon Park as the team fine-tunes preparations for the tournament.

Man City ahead of Man Utd in race for Anderson https://www.adomonline.com/man-city-ahead-of-man-utd-in-race-for-anderson/ Wed, 27 May 2026 12:20:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666481
Manchester City are leading the race to sign Elliot Anderson, with the Nottingham Forest midfielder leaning towards a move to Etihad Stadium instead of rivals Manchester United.

There is a growing expectation Anderson will leave the City Ground this summer.

United are unwilling to overpay, or get drawn into protracted negotiations.

No deal has been struck between Forest and City and the clubs are far apart on their valuation for the 23-year-old, meaning the situation could still change.

The fee could become a record for a British player and eclipse the £105m Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023.

There is a sense at Forest that if there is a big sale this summer it will be Anderson, and a fine World Cup with England would put them in a stronger bargaining position.

Following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, Forest manager Vitor Pereira said Anderson and Morgan Gibbs-White deserve “the top of the world”.

He would prefer to keep both players but it is Anderson who is the more likely to leave currently, especially with no European football at the City Ground next season after they finished 16th in the Premier League.

“I believe if we want to compete for different goals, we need to keep the best players,” said Pereira.

“If not, if you change every season, it is difficult to be consistent and difficult to build something stronger.

“We cannot control the market, of course, but I think we are aligned; what I think and what the club thinks is to try to keep most of them and to try to control the market.”

Anderson, who won the 2025 European U21 Championship with England last summer, joined Forest from Newcastle in 2024 for £35m and has played 92 times, scoring six goals.

Sunday’s game against Bournemouth was his 50th appearance of the season and he was given a standing ovation when withdrawn in the second half.

Spurs needed ‘complete reset’, says under fire CEO https://www.adomonline.com/spurs-needed-complete-reset-says-under-fire-ceo/ Wed, 27 May 2026 12:16:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666474 Vinai Venkatesham was upbeat when he began his new job as Tottenham Hotspur chief executive last summer.

His outlook quickly changed. To say his first season in charge did not go to plan would be an understatement.

And in a wide-ranging exclusive 50-minute interview with BBC Sport, Venkatesham has spoken about:

  • Why the club needed a “reset”
  • Why they kept Thomas Frank for as long as they did
  • The wrong call in appointing Igor Tudor
  • The personal abuse he has faced from supporters
  • Roberto de Zerbi’s “extraordinary” impact
  • The club’s recruitment plans

Speaking after a final-day victory over Everton clinched Tottenham’s Premier League survival, Venkatesham discussed the emotional strains of a relegation battle that went to the season’s closing minutes.

“I think it was just a huge outpouring of relief,” said Venkatesham, who said that the club would not have made anyone redundant in the event of relegation.

“But obviously feeling relief at the end of the season is nowhere near the standard of the football club.”

Venkatesham’s first words were praise for the supporters who he says got the team “over the line” in their relegation battle.

But he knows he will need more than words to appease supporters who have turned on him this season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s owners the Lewis family published a statement on Wednesday in which they promised to “rebuild” and “recapture the spirit” of the club, while acknowledging that a repeat of this season “must never happen again”.

“This will require investment – in our teams, the academy, our backroom functions and more – and we are fully committed to this,” the statement read.

“We are not selling the club. We are all in. We are investing in it. You will see more of this in the coming months.

“We care deeply about Spurs. The rebuild the club needs, and you deserve, has begun. The change required is deep. It will take time and commitment, but change is happening.”

‘I don’t think there was a relentless obsession with football success’

When Venkatesham started work on 1 June last year, he had high hopes.

“On my very first day, what I thought would be a realistic target for the men’s first team would be competing for European places,” he said.

Even though Tottenham had just finished 17th under Ange Postecoglou, they had won the Europa League, their first trophy since 2008, while the squad was packed with seasoned internationals.

But reality quickly struck.

“If you’d have asked me a few months after I joined, when I was no longer an outsider, I would have told you the club was in a significantly worse state in some places than I thought,” said Venkatesham.

“That is absolutely not meant to be a criticism of anyone or anything. It was just what I found. It was very clear that this wasn’t some form of turnaround that was required of the club in quite a few areas. It was really a complete reset.”

Asked to expand on that, Venkatesham said: “If I had to generalise, I would say on the non-football side of the club, in particular around stadium operations and commercial, that the club was and is really strong.

“I think if you look at the football side of the club, over a timeframe of five years or so, there has just been an explosion in progress across the Premier League.

“I’m not saying that Tottenham didn’t improve in that period. But what I can tell you is that when you look at where Tottenham were in many of those areas, compared to where I believe other Premier League clubs are, there was a significant gap. In some areas really quite worryingly so.

“I don’t think that there was what I would call a relentless obsession with football success.

“Our training centre is amazing, one of the best, if not the best in the world. But when you look around, it looks more like a five-star hotel than it does a performance environment. That will change over the summer.

“I think there are many areas where the club hasn’t got the right level of expertise.”

‘Tudor a risk that didn’t work out’

Image caption: Igor Tudor was sacked as Tottenham interim head coach after 44 days and seven matches.

It means nothing now, but Frank’s ill-fated reign started quite well following his appointment last June. Tottenham lost just one of their opening 10 matches of the season in all competitions.

But when Tottenham finally sacked Frank in February, the only surprise was that it didn’t happen sooner.

Indeed, Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange faced heavy criticism from fans for prolonging Frank’s tenure for as long as they did.

“There’s been plenty of coverage that the club was passive during this period. And that’s absolutely not true,” insisted Venkatesham.

In weighing up Frank’s future, Venkatesham says the club considered results, the probability of the Dane turning their failing season around, concerns changing managers may create in the January transfer window, the fixture calendar and concerns over entering the interim head coach market.

Venkatesham confirmed to BBC Sport that Tottenham tried to entice De Zerbi, who was leaving Marseille, to become the club’s full-time head coach after Frank was dismissed.

The Italian, however, was originally unwilling to take the job mid-season, which led Spurs towards making the left-field appointment of Tudor – who left Spurs by mutual consent after just seven games.

“Obviously, we were very disappointed when it became clear that we wouldn’t be appointing Roberto on a permanent basis [in February],” said Venkatesham.

“We were then, in the interim market, which is generally not the broadest. There were a number of reasons why Igor was selected: he had managed in very high-profile and high-pressure environments – we didn’t want somebody that was going to wilt under that pressure.

“He has a history of making an immediate impact. He has managed in big clubs. He has quite a different personality to Thomas and we felt like something different was needed.

“But of course we were really aware he had no Premier League experience. Was it a risk in appointing him? Absolutely.”

Asked if he would accept the Tudor appointment was a mistake, Venkatesham responded: “It didn’t work out. I think it’s very clear it didn’t work out. And I don’t think that is in question. I don’t think anybody would argue anything else.”

‘I understand the supporters’ frustration’

Former executive chairman Daniel Levy, who left Tottenham in September after 25 years, was generally the target of supporters ire during his long reign.

But since Levy’s exit, Venkatesham has attracted increasing anger from irate sections of the fanbase.

Asked if the abuse from supporters has forced him to consider his own role at the club, Venkatesham said: “I understand the frustration around supporters. I think Tottenham supporters have been frustrated for some time. This is two 17th-place finishes in a row.

“It’s clearly not good enough. I think that is rational, normal, sensible, and, is what we would expect from supporters.

“The club had some serious challenges that it needs to address on the football side. We know what those are. We are addressing them. We are fixing them. Those challenges have not disappeared overnight.

“They built up over many years. I wish I could wave my magic wand and fix them overnight, but that is not possible. It takes some time to fix those issues.

“So I have complete confidence in what we’re doing, how we’re doing it. But supporters are rightly impatient. So I have to weather that storm.”

On dealing with intense criticism from fans, Venkatesham – who previously worked for Arsenal – added: “It’s not easy. You have to develop a thick skin.

“I’m helped by the fact that I’ve been in football for a while, for the last 15 years, so it’s not new to me.

“It’s a game of opinions, and I have absolutely no problem with being criticised. I’ve got no problem what anyone in the game being criticised, it’s just part of the job.

“The challenge in football is that that criticism frequently goes way past the line for players, referees, executives.”

De Zerbi’s ‘extraordinary impact’

Speak to those behind the scenes at Tottenham, they will tell you that De Zerbi’s impact has been profound.

Not only in picking up 11 points from seven games to preserve the club’s top-flight status, but his growing influence is instilling belief in the squad.

“I think he has made an extraordinary impact so far,” Venkatesham said.

“We have to recognize that it’s early days, and we also need to recognize that he’s come into a very specific situation.

“It is hard to underestimate the scale of the challenge he walked into. And it’s hard to describe what a significant impact he has had in the dressing room with all the players.

“I think he’s an excellent coach, and we think that he plays the style of football that our supporters and the broader football public want to see.”

De Zerbi is expected to have full involvement in the club’s recruitment this summer.

Tottenham have held talks with Borussia Dortmund’s departed sporting director Sebastian Kehl, while Venkatesham confirmed the club have raised their wage ceiling in the hope of attracting top-quality players.

“The squad needs work and the squad hasn’t got the right balance,” he said.

“We need experience and leadership and also that kind of physical robustness to play in the most demanding league that exists.

“We need to strengthen the club over multiple transfer windows but this transfer window, in particular, is going to be critical.”

DR Congo seek World Cup ticket refunds after Ebola outbreak https://www.adomonline.com/dr-congo-seek-world-cup-ticket-refunds-after-ebola-outbreak/ Wed, 27 May 2026 12:12:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666468 The Democratic Republic of Congo have asked Fifa to refund the cost of 2026 World Cup tickets bought by fans who are now unable to enter the United States because of Ebola-related travel restrictions.

The Leopards are returning to football’s biggest stage for the first time since 1974, but the public health emergency declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 16 May is threatening to stop supporters from travelling to the US.

Officials say there are more than 900 suspected cases of Ebola in central and East Africa, and 223 suspected deaths, since the outbreak was declared.

The vast majority of those cases and fatalities have been in DR Congo, and the US embassy in the capital Kinshasa has suspended visa services.

While the WHO has not advised on imposing travel restrictions, the US has barred entry from non-Americans who have been in DR Congo, Uganda or South Sudan in the previous 21 days.

“We asked Fifa if this is possible to take this into consideration, because the tickets are little bit expensive,” Veron Mosengo-Omba, the president of DR Congo’s football federation (Fecofa), told BBC Sport Africa.

“They are punished because they cannot get [in to the US] to see the World Cup to support their team.

“We don’t want our supporters who love football, who love the World Cup, to lose everything.”

The US is hosting the World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, with tickets as much as seven times more expensive than the 2022 tournament in Qatar because of Fifa’s dynamic pricing model.

The Leopards face Portugal in their Group K opener on 17 June, meaning any fans travelling from DR Congo to watch the match in Houston must effectively depart the country on Tuesday to satisfy US entry restrictions.

In response to Fecofa’s request, Fifa told the BBC it “will look into it in due course”.

The world governing body’s standard policy dictates tickets are listed for resale or transferred to another individual rather than refunded, reserving the latter option for exceptional circumstances like match cancellations.

DR Congo’s second group fixture against Colombia will take place in Guadalajara, and the bulk of Congolese fans are now expected to redirect their travel plans to Mexico.

With their final match against Uzbekistan back in the US in Atlanta, supporters will be hoping the side can finish second in the group to secure a last-32 tie in Toronto, Canada.

Despite the fan lock-out, the team itself remains unaffected by the US’ entry restrictions.

All 26 players in Sebastien Desabre’s squad, and most of the technical staff, are based outside of the country.

Team officials who are from DR Congo have already left the country to meet the 21-day quarantine requirement.

The Leopards did have to cancel a pre-tournament training camp in Kinshasa and are assembling in Belgium for friendlies before heading to their base in Texas.

Fifa told the BBC it is in “close communication” with Fecofa, World Cup host governments and relevant health agencies to ensure medical and security compliance.

DR Congo holds pride of place as the first sub-Saharan country to compete at the World Cup, featuring in 1974 when it was called Zaire.

For Mosengo-Omba, their return after a 52-year absence marks a rebirth.

“This is the resurrection of football in this country,” he declared.

“People forget their problems now they are following the Leopards. The team need to go to the second round.”

Mosengo-Omba was elected Fecofa president this month after stepping down from his role as the secretary general of the Confederation of African Football (Caf).

He departed in March following the fall-out from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) final, having previously been criticised for staying in office past Caf’s mandatory retirement age of 63.

But Mosengo-Omba, who was previously chief member associations officer at Fifa, is excited by his new role.

“With the new leaders, we bring the football of this country in the very high level,” he said.

The diplomatic hurdle comes amid mounting global panic over yet another Ebola outbreak – with DR Congo at the epicentre of several outbreaks since the deadly virus was discovered in the 1970s.

Mosengo-Omba, however, has warned that perceptions about the disease are causing unnecessary anxiety.

“Some people are thinking Ebola is genetic, it’s a contamination,” he stated.

“It’s ignorance about this disease.

“Okay, there’s Ebola in DRC, in Ituri, in the rural parts. Because Congo is big, it’s not because you are from DRC you get Ebola immediately.

“The country in the world who knows how to fight this disease is DRC because we have faced this many times.

“The world doesn’t need to be afraid.”

However, this latest outbreak has been caused by the rare Bundibugyo viral strain, which has not been seen for over a decade.

With no vaccine currently available, it is harder to treat.

That, coupled with community distrust and armed conflict which has displaced tens of thousands of people in the Eastern part of DRC, have made it difficult for the outbreak to be contained.

Now it is threatening to overshadow a footballing moment decades in the making.

Van Gaal fallout made Di Maria ‘hate’ Man Utd, but he has no regrets https://www.adomonline.com/van-gaal-fallout-made-di-maria-hate-man-utd-but-he-has-no-regrets/ Wed, 27 May 2026 12:07:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666445 Legendary Argentina World Cup winner Angel di Maria has blamed his unhappy spell at Manchester United on former boss Louis van Gaal.

In an exclusive interview with BBC Sport, Di Maria says Van Gaal zeroed in on negatives in his game, never the positives, which led him to “hate” being at Old Trafford.

“Things started really well,” said Di Maria. “Everything was flowing.

“Then I started to have issues with Van Gaal and from there everything fell apart.”

Van Gaal played him in both wide positions, but also used Di Maria in the number 10 role and as a midfielder because he felt the player wasn’t doing the job he had been asked to fulfil.

This led to arguments behind the scenes which were only exacerbated by an attempted burglary at his house in Cheshire when he was at home with his young family.

Di Maria joined United on a five-year deal for a British record £59.7m from Real Madrid in August 2014, with the aim of making them champions again under Louis Van Gaal.

However, despite an explosive start, during which Di Maria scored three goals and created four others in his first six games, the move didn’t work out and within 12 months, he was demanding to leave.

There are two sides to every story, of course, and Van Gaal has been asked for his own observations in response to Di Maria’s comments.

Firstly, the highly-respected former Netherlands coach said he never asked to sign the player. It was a club decision, which he felt was a mistake.

Secondly, he is a structured manager with a vision about the game, which assigns a job description for every player, and the role they need to carry out.

Van Gaal argues he tried Di Maria in many positions without being about to find one where he was effective.

Nevertheless, Di Maria’s criticisms are pointed and personal.

“Like I said, I started really well. Everything was perfect. But then suddenly we started having lots of meetings about all the things I was doing wrong on the pitch,” he said.

“He never showed me what I was doing well, just the negatives, over and over. Eventually I got fed up.

“Life there was very different. It gets dark really early and then the cold started. Everything kept snowballing. There was also the break-in at my house.

“When all of that happens; when you are not playing, when things aren’t going well for you, when you have problems inside the club, it ends up affecting you a lot. It made me hate being there.

“I got robbed in Paris too and still stayed for another two or three years, because life there was good.

“In Manchester, everything just snowballed. I wanted to prioritise my family and that is why I left.”

Di Maria’s wife Jorgelina Cardoso was also unhappy in Manchester and in an interview with the Daily Mail in 2022, said: “I didn’t like it at all. People are all weird. You walk around and you don’t know if they’re going to kill you. The food is disgusting. The women look like porcelain.

“Angel and I were in Madrid, at the best team in the world, perfect food, perfect weather, everything was perfect. And then came United’s proposal.

“I told him ‘no way, no way’, but he kept saying we will be a little more financially secure and we have to go. We fought about it. I don’t blame him for going there. It was horrible.

“I just told him, ‘darling, I want to kill myself, it’s night time at two o’clock’.”

It was March when Van Gaal started to leave Di Maria out of his starting line-up.

By that point, the player, who last summer returned to his boyhood club Rosario Central, had suffered a couple of minor injuries and been sent off in an FA Cup tie with Arsenal.

Once the season came to an end, Di Maria was done with United.

He refused to join the club’s pre-season tour to the United States and eventually negotiated a £44.3m move to Paris St Germain.

“He said I never showed up [for pre-season] but I had already said I wanted to leave and that I wasn’t going to report back to the club,” said Di Maria.

“I stayed in Rosario until a decision was made.

“If you are unhappy, your family is unhappy, if your house gets burgled, you fall out with the manager and things aren’t going well, it’s very difficult to say I loved my time in Manchester. That is the reality.”

Nevertheless, looking back on the period, Di Maria says he made the right decision to come to Manchester in the first place.

“But when it comes to the Premier League, the atmosphere, life at the club, honestly, I was left with a really good feeling because there were great people inside the club who always treated me well, who always supported me and helped me with everything. For that, I’m grateful,” he added.

“It was a decision I wanted to make. I wanted to go to United. The football, arriving at the stadiums, the atmosphere, the love from the fans, I don’t regret any of it.

“Joining them was incredible. I played as Manchester United on the PlayStation. I used to play with (Wayne) Rooney and suddenly, he was beside me. Of course, I understood the number seven was the biggest shirt number at Manchester United. But to me, it was just a number, like I wore 22 at Madrid.”

Mustapha Ussif denies wrongdoing in GH₵580m African Games audit report https://www.adomonline.com/mustapha-ussif-denies-wrongdoing-in-gh%e2%82%b5580m-african-games-audit-report/ Wed, 27 May 2026 07:59:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666408 Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has denied any wrongdoing in relation to the 13th African Games held in Accra in 2023.

In a press statement dated May 26, Mr. Ussif said he had taken notice of the release of the audit report into the Games and rejected claims linking him to any alleged irregularities.

“My attention has been drawn to the release of an audit report, which report is titled, Comprehensive Audit Report on the 13th African Games, Accra 2023. The said report, I understand attributes various irregularities to me. I however deny being responsible for any such irregularities, if any at all,” he stated.

Mr. Ussif, former Chief Director William Kartey, and former Local Organising Committee(LOC) Chairman Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare were among individuals cited in the report for possible sanctions and recovery actions under Section 92 of the Public Procurement Act.

The forensic audit, which was commissioned by President Mahama last year, revealed widespread cost inflation, irregular payments, and unsupported expenditure across contracts linked to the event.

Though the Auditor-General did not make any criminal findings, it recommended the recovery of GH₵579 million from these three top former officials at the heart of Ghana’s organisation of the 13th Africa Games.

However, Mr. Ussif has said he expects to be given the opportunity to respond to the issues raised in the report when it is presented before Parliament.

“It is my understanding that the report of the audit will be presented to Parliament and persons who may have answers to findings will be invited to respond accordingly. “Therefore, I look forward to the opportunity to respond to all the claims of impropriety in the said report,” he added.

The 700-page audit report, submitted to Parliament on February 26, 2026, examined how public funds allocated for the 13th African Games were managed and spent.

The Games, which Ghana hosted for the first time, were financed through a US$170 million loan approved by Parliament, in addition to infrastructure contracts worth more than US$145 million.

According to the report, a total of GH₵2.245 billion was spent on the Games, while liabilities exceeding GH₵208 million remained outstanding at the time of the audit.

Inside Audit Report: Check the alleged inflated contracts in 2023 African Games https://www.adomonline.com/inside-audit-report-check-the-alleged-inflated-contracts-in-2023-african-games/ Tue, 26 May 2026 15:47:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666297 A forensic audit commissioned by President John Dramani Mahama into Ghana’s hosting of the 2023 African Games has uncovered widespread financial irregularities, inflated contracts, unsupported expenditure and procurement breaches amounting to GH¢580 million.

The 700-page report referenced AG.SAR/2026/03 and signed by Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah-Asiedu, examined the operational, financial and technical management of the Games, including procurement, infrastructure delivery, broadcasting and post-Games asset management.

The audit was conducted under Section 16 of the Audit Service Act, 2000 (Act 584), following a request from the Office of the President dated 22 October 2025.

According to the report, Ghana received and spent a total of GH¢2.245 billion on the Games through government releases, sponsorships and participation fees. Despite this, auditors identified outstanding liabilities of GH¢208.6 million, comprising GH¢155.1 million, US$4.1 million and €288,775.

The report repeatedly recommends recovery actions and sanctions against former Youth and Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, former Chief Director William Kartey and former Local Organising Committee Chairman Dr Kwaku Ofosu-Asare.

Overpriced contracts and unsupported payments

Among the findings, the audit revealed that the Ministry of Sports paid GH¢38.9 million to Delovely Company Limited under a sports equipment contract valued at US$3.24 million, despite equipment worth US$206,000 for table tennis, badminton and handball never being supplied.

Auditors also questioned an additional lump-sum item of US$408,000 labelled simply as “Sports Equipment”, which lacked specifications and supporting documentation.

The report concluded that the revised payable contract value should have been US$2.62 million, resulting in an overpayment of US$374,000, approximately GH¢4.5 million.

Anti-doping tests procured from Omni Speciality Product Limited at a cost of €739,000 were also found to be overpriced. Benchmarking against rates charged by World Anti-Doping Agency-accredited laboratories showed that unit prices significantly exceeded market rates, resulting in an estimated overcharge of €572,000, approximately GH¢8 million.

Accommodation services for Games officials were contracted through JDK Travel and Tours at US$150 per room per night for 500 rooms over 21 days, amounting to US$1.58 million.

However, market verification showed official hotel rates ranged between US$50 and US$70 per room, placing the justifiable total at approximately US$735,000. Auditors therefore identified an inflated component of US$840,000, approximately GH¢10.1 million.

JDK Travel contracts questioned

The audit described the engagement of JDK Travel and Tours as particularly problematic, noting that the company was registered as a travel and tour entity and had no accommodation licence.

The report further stated that two hotels listed by the company could not be independently verified.

JDK was also paid GH¢45.7 million under two vehicle transportation contracts. Benchmark comparisons with market rental rates identified overpricing amounting to GH¢13.1 million, while a further GH¢2.2 million was flagged as inflated following audit recomputation of actual quantities and usage frequencies.

Additionally, the company received GH¢3.16 million for branding and de-branding Games vehicles. Auditors concluded that comparable services should have cost about GH¢1.16 million, resulting in overpricing of GH¢2 million.

GH¢336 million spent without verification

The report identified systemic weaknesses in the management of 14 major service contracts covering anti-doping tests, accommodation, catering, air tickets and transportation, valued at GH¢336.6 million.

According to auditors, these contracts were awarded as fixed lump sums despite involving variable services. Contract files lacked rooming lists, meal registers, passenger manifests, transport logs and test documentation linking payments to actual services delivered.

As a result, auditors concluded that GH¢336.6 million was committed and paid without verifiable evidence of services consumed.

Catering contract raises concerns

The audit also scrutinised a catering contract awarded to L&M, which included non-feeding cost components totalling US$2.83 million.

The amount covered transport and logistics, utilities, infrastructure, equipment, staffing, and project management costs.

Auditors said these charges were embedded in the catering contract without supporting schedules, cost build-ups or independent verification, while some of the services overlapped with contracts awarded to other providers.

Related-party exposure and cash withdrawals

Auditors further identified what they described as “Common Beneficial Owner and Related-Party Exposure” amounting to GH¢150.6 million.

Several companies awarded contracts for the Games were found to share common ownership or beneficial control, raising concerns over undisclosed conflicts of interest and anti-competitive procurement practices.

The report also flagged irregular cash withdrawals amounting to GH¢20.4 million from Local Organising Committee accounts.

According to the audit, payments were made in cash to third parties in violation of mandatory electronic transfer requirements, while several transactions bypassed the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

Auditors additionally found that GH¢15.1 million from LOC accounts was used for activities unrelated to the Games, including advance salary payments and other disbursements to Black Stars officials and technical staff.

GBC losses and undelivered training

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) was also cited in the report over procurement irregularities involving contracts worth about GH¢3.56 million executed without formal agreements.

A separate payment of €57,000, approximately GH¢684,000, was made to The Production Room under a training contract.

However, auditors said there was no evidence that any training was conducted, noting the absence of schedules, attendance records, training materials or certification documents.

The report also estimated that GBC lost approximately US$4.96 million, equivalent to GH¢59.5 million, in potential broadcast revenue due to poor management and marketing of the Games.

Infrastructure defects and procurement breaches

Physical inspections of major Games facilities uncovered widespread construction defects, including slab cracking, drainage failures, corrosion, inadequate waterproofing and incomplete works at venues such as the Aquatic Centre, Legon Stadium and Achimota Pavilion.

Auditors estimated that rectification works would cost at least US$1 million, approximately GH¢12 million.

At the Borteyman Sports Complex, engineering analysis of the “May Action Plan” variation order showed omitted works valued at US$49.3 million against additions of only US$14.9 million, resulting in a net loss of US$34.4 million.

At the University of Ghana Stadium, auditors identified avoidable and irregular claims totalling US$2.8 million linked to contract variations.

The report also highlighted what it described as the near-total absence of competitive procurement.

According to auditors, single-source contracts worth approximately GH¢2.7 billion were awarded without documented justification, contrary to procurement regulations.

Legacy concerns and recommendations

Beyond the financial findings, the audit expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of Games facilities and poor post-Games asset management.

The Legacy Sub-Committee, established to transform the facilities into a University of Sport for Development, was found to have become ineffective and was later dissolved without achieving its mandate.

The report warned that Ghana’s failure to fulfil outstanding obligations under the Host Agreement with the African Union Commission could affect the country’s eligibility to host or participate in future African Games.

In its conclusion, the Auditor-General stated: “The magnitude, recurrence, and cross-cutting nature of the irregularities indicate that these were not isolated lapses but structural deficiencies in institutional control environments.”

The report recommended thatthe government treat the findings as a catalyst for broader structural reforms within public financial management and procurement systems.

Despite the split, Hearts of Oak expressed gratitude to Dramani and his backroom staff for what it described as their professionalism and commitment during their tenure.

2026 WC: GFA reveals intensified scouting operation behind Black Stars’ 28-man provisional squad selection https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-gfa-reveals-intensified-scouting-operation-behind-black-stars-28-man-provisional-squad-selection/ Tue, 26 May 2026 12:53:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666231 Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed the extensive scouting and analytical process undertaken by the Black Stars technical team in selecting the provisional 28-man squad for the pre-World Cup international friendly against Wales in Cardiff.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz on Monday, May 25, 2026, unveiled the provisional squad, with the final list expected to be announced on June 1.

The squad announcement has sparked debate among football supporters, with many questioning the absence of players such as Joseph Paintsil, Majeed Ashimeru, and Derrick Köhn.

However, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Asante Twum defended the selection process, insisting that the technical team relied on detailed scouting, data analysis, and sustained player monitoring to assemble a balanced and competitive squad.

According to him, the decision-making process involved a thorough assessment of numerous players over an extended period.

“About 200 videos were reviewed to assess individual players. The technical team also analysed 170 matches through live monitoring. During this period, 75 players were systematically scouted, while 30 were observed live,” he said.

He further stressed that the technical team documented every stage of the scouting process to aid future planning and ensure informed squad decisions.

“All assessments were documented to support medium- and long-term planning and inform the selection of the 28-man squad,” Asante Twum added.

The Black Stars are currently camping in Cardiff as preparations intensify for next week’s friendly encounter against Wales.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia for the World Cup. The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Ghana will conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

The PAOK FC left-back has been included in Ghana’s 28-man provisional squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his first call-up since September 2023.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Asante Twum explained that earlier attempts by former coaches Chris Hughton and Otto Addo to reintegrate the former Chelsea defender were unsuccessful, but the current technical leadership has taken a different view.

“Baba Rahman’s return is a purely technical decision. Previous efforts by Chris Hughton and Otto Addo were unsuccessful, but Carlos Queiroz has now made it happen,” Asante Twum said.

He further clarified that the final 26-man squad will be selected from the current provisional list.

“The 28 players called up for the Black Stars are the final squad for the World Cup. Twenty-six of them will make the cut based on the assessment of head coach Carlos Queiroz.”

Ghana are gearing up for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, with the Black Stars placed in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. They begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, and concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

The team is currently in Cardiff as part of their final preparations, where they are scheduled to play a friendly against Wales on June 2.

Queiroz has named a provisional 28-man squad ahead of the tournament, with the final 26 expected to be confirmed on June 1.

Ghana will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run in 2010, having exited at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022.

African Games 2023: Former Sports Minister and LOC Chairman ordered by Auditor-General to refund GHC 579m https://www.adomonline.com/african-games-2023-former-sports-minister-and-loc-chairman-ordered-by-auditor-general-to-refund-ghc-579m/ Tue, 26 May 2026 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666212 The Auditor-General has recommended the recovery of GHC 579 million from three top former officials at the heart of Ghana’s organisation of the 13th Africa Games.

A forensic audit, which was commissioned by President Mahama last year, revealed widespread cost inflation, irregular payments, and unsupported expenditure across contracts linked to the event.

Though the Auditor-General did not make any criminal findings, it recommended that former Minister of Sports, Mustapha Ussif, former Chief Director, William Kartey, and former Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairman, Dr Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, be made to refund the money to the state.

In one instance, the Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, Prof. Amin Alhassan, is also named in relation to a training contract.

Across all flagged transactions, auditors have recommended the recovery of an estimated GHC 579,114,352.24, alongside $44,354,881.77 and €629,070, citing overpricing, unjustified payments, undelivered goods, and contractual variances.

The findings cut across catering, accommodation, transport, equipment procurement, infrastructure, and administrative spending, painting a picture of systemic cost inflation during Ghana’s hosting of the continental multi-sport event.

In virtually every flagged transaction, auditors repeatedly recommend recovery from the same three key figures:

  • Mustapha Ussif (former Minister of Youth and Sports)
  • William Kartey (former Chief Director)
  • Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare (former LOC Chairman)

Their names appear in connection with all major cost centres, including catering, logistics, accommodation, equipment procurement, vehicle hiring, branding, infrastructure works, and sponsorship management.

In one case involving broadcast training, Prof. Amin Alhassan is also cited alongside the trio.

Breakdown of irregularities as cited by the Auditor-General:

Catering irregularities – US$2.83 million and GHC 33.9 million

Auditors flagged $2,826,540 (GHC33,918,480) in non-feeding costs embedded within a catering contract, including transport, utilities, staffing, infrastructure, and administration—without supporting documentation or justification.

Anti-doping overpricing – €572,040 and GHC 8.01 million

A contract for anti-doping tests was found to be significantly above benchmark WADA laboratory rates, creating an overpricing gap of €572,040 (GHC 8,008,560).

Accommodation inflation – $840,000 and GHC10.08 million

Hotel rooms were reportedly charged at $150 per night, despite market rates ranging between $50 and $70, resulting in an inflated component of $840,000 (GHC10,080,000).

Sports equipment overpricing – $322,697 and GHC 3.87 million

Boxing, triathlon, hockey, and arm wrestling equipment contracts exceeded benchmark prices, with total variance estimated at $322,697.28 (GHC3,872,367.36).

Transport and logistics – over GHC30 million flagged in multiple layers

Vehicle-related contracts form one of the largest clusters of irregularities:

  • Branding and de-branding: GHC2,003,121.75
  • Vehicle hiring overpricing: GHC13,120,226.21
  • Over-invoicing adjustment: GHC2,201,514.00
  • Excess rental charges: GHC239,520.00

Together, these reflect a broader pattern of inflated logistics expenditure under JDK Travel & Tours contracts.

Undelivered and unaccounted equipment – $374,462 and GHC4.49 million

Auditors also flagged payments for sports equipment that were either not delivered or lacked specification, resulting in an overpayment of $374,462.39 (GHC4,493,548.68).

Unrelated LOC payments – GHC15.09 million

A further GHC15,093,666 was identified as unrelated to the Games, including payments routed to Black Stars technical staff and other non-Games activities.

Infrastructure defects – GHC12 million

Construction defects across key venues, including the Aquatic Centre and Legon Stadium, are estimated to require at least GHC12 million in rectification works.

Major EPC contract irregularities – $38.99 million and GHC467.89 million

The most significant anomaly relates to engineering and construction contracts for the Borteyman Sports Complex, University of Ghana Stadium, and Legon Sports Village.

Auditors flagged:

  • Unjustified variations
  • Inflated claims
  • Scope reductions and additions outside contract discipline

Total irregular claims in this category stand at $38,991,182.10 (GHC467,894,185.20).

Inflated works contracts – GHC5.40 million

Three single-source infrastructure contracts were found to be overpriced due to lack of proper price-reasonableness assessments.

The grand picture: a financial trail under scrutiny

When aggregated, the audit’s recovery recommendations point to the following totals:

  • GHC579,114,352.24
  • $44,354,881.77
  • € 629,070

These figures represent what auditors describe as unjustified expenditure, overpricing, undelivered goods, and contractual deviations across the entire Games delivery chain.

Auditor-General recommends sanctions for Ussif, Dr Ofosu-Asare and Kartey over GHC 726m administrative lapses, procurement breaches https://www.adomonline.com/auditor-general-recommends-sanctions-for-ussif-dr-ofosu-asare-and-kartey-over-ghc-726m-administrative-lapses-procurement-breaches/ Tue, 26 May 2026 11:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666223 The Auditor-General has recommended sanctions against former senior officials of the Ministry of Sports and the Local Organising Committee (LOC), after uncovering what it describes as deep-rooted procurement breaches, weak financial controls, and unexplained expenditures.

At the centre of the report are former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif, former Chief Director William Kartey, and former LOC Chairman Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, who are repeatedly named as the key officials to be sanctioned under Section 92 of the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663), as amended.

In total, the administrative irregularities flagged in the report amount to approximately GHC1.15 billion (GHC1,149,809,221.50), alongside USD 5.2 million in revenue-related losses and cash control breaches.

The audit concludes that the irregularities were not isolated, but systemic—spanning contract design, procurement approvals, payment structures, cash management, and post-contract accountability.

The strongest sanction recommendations consistently target:

  • Mustapha Ussif (former Minister of Youth and Sports)
  • William Kartey (former Chief Director, MOYS)
  • Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare (former LOC Chairman)

They are cited in multiple breaches, including:

  • Uncompetitive procurement approvals
  • Single-source contract justifications
  • Weak or absent price benchmarking
  • Poor contract structuring and oversight failures
  • Failure to enforce procurement compliance systems

In addition, Prof. Amin Alhassan (Director-General, GBC) is also recommended for sanctions or liability in relation to broadcast procurement irregularities and staff deployment issues.

Breakdown of key administrative irregularities

GHC18.9 million: Unqualified contractor engagement

The audit found that JDK Travel & Tours, a travel agency without accommodation licensing, was used for hotel services under questionable arrangements.

Auditors also could not independently verify listed hotel partners.

GHC336.63 million: Fixed payments for variable services

Fourteen contracts—including catering, accommodation, transport, and anti-doping services—were structured as fixed lump sums without usage verification systems such as:

  • Rooming lists
  • Meal registers
  • Passenger manifests
  • Test documentation

This meant GHC336.63 million was paid without evidence of actual consumption.

GH¢38.82 million: Sports equipment contract misalignment

Equipment not supplied due to schedule changes was still paid for, with no contract adjustment or formal variation orders.

GH¢150.6 million: Related-party contract exposure

A major red flag emerged around JDK Travel & Tours, Delovely Co. Ltd, and Jorninas Co. Ltd, all linked to a single beneficial owner.

The contracts covered:

  • Transport and logistics
  • Ticketing
  • Accommodation
  • Sports equipment and medals

Total exposure: GHC150.62 million

GHC55.77 million: Unexplained contract costs

Contracts were executed without itemised pricing or defined scopes, making audit verification impossible.

GHC20.37 million: Cash withdrawals outside GIFMIS

Large cash withdrawals were made without supporting documentation or system traceability, bypassing Ghana’s GIFMIS financial controls.

$247,194: Weak cash reconciliation

Cash received from participating countries was not fully lodged, with $247,194 unaccounted for in proper banking records.

GHC27.23 million: Unaccounted merchandise revenue

Sales of official Games merchandise lacked inventory logs and revenue tracking systems.

Only minimal proceeds were recorded, raising concerns over missing income streams.

GHC3.56 million: Services without contracts (GBC)

Broadcast-related service providers—including TPR, Silicon House, and Broadstem—were engaged without formal contracts.

Prof. Amin Alhassan cited for sanction.

GHC44.35 million: Delayed procurement ratification

GBC broadcast contracts were approved five months after the Games ended, undermining procurement legality.

GHC40.79 million: Misuse of GBC personnel

GBC staff were deployed under third-party contracts without cost recovery or revenue-sharing arrangements.

$4.95 million: Lost broadcast revenue opportunity

Projected broadcast revenue of US$5 million collapsed to just US$45,000 in licensing fees, while the state incurred US$3.6 million in production costs.

Free access was granted to a major broadcaster without approval.

GHC482.52 million: Construction supervision failures

Consultants were found to have certified defective works without proper quality assurance documentation, leading to major infrastructure defects.

GHC45.96 million: Uncompetitive procurement

Seven procurements were executed without documented approval authority or procurement method justification.

GHC18.03 million: “Reluctantly accepted” single-source contracts

Eight contracts were approved by the Public Procurement Authority with reservations, yet still executed.

GHC16.57 million: PPA price reductions not justified

Although contract values were reduced by 5–10%, no supporting negotiation or value-for-money documentation was provided.

55 single-source contracts flagged

The audit also revealed that 55 contracts were single-sourced without justification, supplier vetting, or benchmarking.

The sanction question now moves to enforcement

The audit is explicit: many of the failures require disciplinary sanctions under Ghana’s Public Procurement Act, particularly Section 92.

At the centre of potential accountability are:

  • Former Minister Mustapha Ussif
  • Former Chief Director William Kartey
  • Former LOC Chairman Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare
  • GBC Director-General Prof. Amin Alhassan (for broadcast-related breaches)

Asante Kotoko opens investigation into alleged bribery attempt https://www.adomonline.com/asante-kotoko-opens-investigation-into-alleged-bribery-attempt/ Tue, 26 May 2026 08:33:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666141 Asante Kotoko have launched a formal investigation into allegations of attempted bribery involving some of its players ahead of their final Ghana Premier League fixture against Swedru All Blacks at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.

Reports had circulated prior to the match suggesting that an official attempted to influence members of the playing squad.

However, defender Patrick Asiedu is said to have reported the matter to the club’s management for further action.

In a statement released on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the club confirmed that its Board and Management met with players and the technical team on May 25 to address concerns over the team’s underwhelming performances during the 2025/26 season.

The discussions also covered the bribery allegations, which are believed to have emerged in the build-up to the final league game.

Kotoko has since initiated a full-scale probe into the matter, stressing its determination to establish the facts and ensure accountability.

The club commended Asiedu for what it described as professionalism and integrity, saying he acted promptly in escalating the issue through the appropriate channels.

“Asante Kotoko treats issues of this nature with the utmost seriousness,” the club noted, adding that any individual found culpable will face disciplinary measures following the outcome of investigations.

Management also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity across all levels of the club as it navigates a challenging campaign.

On the pitch, however, Kotoko suffered a 2-1 defeat in the match.

2026 WC: Ghana can surprise any opposition – Ex-GFA boss Kwesi Nyantakyi https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-ghana-can-surprise-any-opposition-ex-gfa-boss-kwesi-nyantakyi/ Tue, 26 May 2026 08:00:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666122 Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi has backed the Black Stars to defy recent struggles and make an impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana, four-time African champions, are intensifying preparations for the tournament to be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. However, results in recent friendly matches have raised concerns, with the team failing to register a win in their last five outings.

Despite the dip in form, Nyantakyi insists Ghana’s football history proves the team should never be discounted on the global stage.

“As I told somebody yesterday, never write off any Ghana team,” the former CAF First Vice President told the Daily Graphic.

“The time you have little faith in them is when they spring surprises. Let us rally behind them, and I think they can do well,” Mr Nyantakyi added.

Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. Their campaign begins against Panama at BMO Field on June 17, followed by a clash with England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before concluding the group stage against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field on June 27.

The Black Stars are currently in Cardiff preparing for an international friendly against Wales on June 2.

Meanwhile, Carlos Queiroz has announced a 28-man provisional squad, with the final list expected to be confirmed on June 1.

After back-to-back group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Ghana will be aiming to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in more than a decade.

2026 WC: Godwin Attram backs Queiroz to steer Black Stars beyond group stage https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-godwin-attram-backs-queiroz-to-steer-black-stars-beyond-group-stage/ Tue, 26 May 2026 07:52:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666115 Former Ghana striker Godwin Attram has expressed confidence that the Black Stars can progress beyond the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, backing newly appointed head coach Carlos Queiroz to deliver on expectations.

Ghana, four-time African champions, are set to make their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

However, their build-up has been far from ideal, with the team failing to win any of their last five international friendlies.

Despite that worrying run, Attram believes the experience and pedigree of Queiroz—who has previously managed the national teams of Egypt and Colombia, as well as Real Madrid in various capacities—could prove decisive.

“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram told Graphic Sports.

When asked about Ghana’s chances in what has been described as a demanding Group L, Attram dismissed concerns over the opposition.

“Why not?” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group,” he added.

The Black Stars will continue their preparations with a friendly against Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

At the tournament proper, Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. They will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Ghana will be aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2010, having suffered group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022.

Queiroz has already named a 28-man provisional squad, with the final selection expected on June 1.

Felix Afena-Gyan’s home burgled during Black Stars duty in Europe https://www.adomonline.com/felix-afena-gyans-home-burgled-during-black-stars-duty-in-europe/ Tue, 26 May 2026 07:33:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666104 Ghana international Felix Afena-Gyan has reportedly suffered a burglary at his home in Italy while away on international duty with the Black Stars.

The forward’s residence was broken into, and several personal belongings were stolen during his absence for Ghana’s international friendly against Mexico over the weekend.

Afena-Gyan featured in the match, a 2-0 defeat to the 2026 World Cup co-hosts, playing 67 minutes before being substituted.

However, upon returning to Italy after national team duties, the 22-year-old discovered that his home had been ransacked.

A video circulating on social media, shared by his agent Oliver Arthur, appears to confirm the incident and shows evidence of the break-in.

The Turkish-based attacker is yet to make any public statement regarding the unfortunate episode.

The tournament, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will mark Ghana’s fifth appearance at the World Cup. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

Speaking to 3Sports, Gyan—who serves as Brand Ambassador for Ghana’s national teams and Colts football—said the squad has promising talent capable of making an impact, but admitted concerns about the level of experience within the group.

“We have the tools. We have young players coming up. The experience is a bit dicey. As somebody who has been in the game, we will do everything, we will give our support,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are currently in camp in Cardiff as preparations continue for next month’s international friendly against Wales. Thirteen players have reported so far, including Ernest Nuamah, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Jordan Ayew, Caleb Yirenkyi, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Elisha Owusu, Gideon Mensah, Marvin Senaya, Jerome Opoku, Benjamin Asare, Joseph Anang, Solomon Agbasi, and Alidu Seidu.

The group trained at Dragon Park on Monday, with the remaining players from the 28-man provisional squad expected to join camp on Tuesday.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field, before facing England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Having exited at the group stage in both the 2014 and 2022 editions, the Black Stars will be aiming to reach the knockout rounds for the first time in over a decade.

The experienced Portuguese tactician was confirmed as Ghana’s new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March this year.

Addo parted ways with the national team after Ghana suffered successive defeats to Austria and Germany in international friendly matches as part of preparations for the upcoming World Cup.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Attram expressed confidence in Queiroz’s ability to improve the team’s mentality and tactical organisation.

“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram said.

The former Black Stars forward also dismissed concerns over Ghana’s chances in what many consider a difficult World Cup group.

Asked whether Ghana could progress from the group stage, Attram remained optimistic.

“Why not?” he responded.

“At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group,” Attram added.

The Black Stars are set to intensify preparations for the Mundial with an international friendly against Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The four-time African champions will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before taking on England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Having endured group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups in Brazil and Qatar respectively, Ghana will be aiming for a return to the knockout stages for the first time in more than a decade.

Meanwhile, Queiroz has named a 28-man provisional squad, with the final team expected to be announced on June 1.

The team opened camp on Monday, May 25, 2026, and trained at the Dragon Park in Cardiff ahead of the friendly against Wales on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

Greece-based defender Baba Abdul Rahman returns to the team for the first time since September 2023, following consistent performances for PAOK.

The former Chelsea left back has made 35 appearances this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists across all competitions.

Also returning is Olympique Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah, who has been absent for close to a year. He is back to full fitness after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for more than 12 months.

Other notable returnees include Rayo Vallecano’s Abdul Mumin, who is back from a long layoff due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury; Saint-Étienne midfielder Augustine Boakye; and Stade Rennes defender Alidu Seidu.

Ajax Amsterdam youngster Paul Reverson has also been included. The 20-year-old has been called up for further assessment with a long-term view, having impressed for Ajax’s youth side in the Netherlands.

Mahama’s African Games forensic audit reveals over $40m in financial irregularities https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-african-games-forensic-audit-reveals-over-40m-in-financial-irregularities/ Tue, 26 May 2026 06:40:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666069 A forensic audit of Ghana’s organisation of African Games 2023 has revealed that the country spent in excess of $40 million on avoidable cost.

The audit, which was commissioned by President Mahama last year and sighted by Joy Sports detailed the country’s expenses for the competition that began late February 2024 and ended on mid-March same year.

The report identified millions of dollars and cedis in questionable claims, inflated rates, omitted works and avoidable costs across several projects.

The comprehensive audit into facilities constructed and refurbished for the Games highlighted what it described as “opportunity costs”, irregular variations and inconsistencies in Bills of Quantities (BoQs), particularly at the Borteyman Sports Complex, University of Ghana Stadium, Games Village hostels, cricket facilities and access roads.

According to the report, the biggest red flag emerged from the Borteyman Sports Complex project, where auditors estimated a net omission and “opportunity cost for scope shrinkage” of $34.43 million from the original contract value of $145.09 million.

The Audit Service said several major components initially captured in the contract were either omitted entirely or significantly rescoped. These included:

Warm-up football field – $3.213 million omitted

Multipurpose hall conversion into lecture halls – $3.06 million omitted

Single-lane access road – USD 11.22 million omitted

Double-lane access road – $11.22 million omitted

Drainage works – $3.366 million omitted

Electrical substation – $ 850,000 omitted

Concrete sidewalks and children’s playground – reduced by $2.014 million

Equipment installations including CCTV, irrigation and security systems – reduced by $1.6 million

Despite the scope reductions, auditors noted that consultant supervision fees increased from 3 per cent to 3.83 per cent after the rescoping exercise.

At the University of Ghana Stadium project, the Audit Service flagged claims amounting to $2.814 million as opportunity costs arising from variations and delays.

The report cited:

$388,856.78 in interest on delayed payments, $1.136 million in prolongation costs due to a 10-month extension, $769,490.72 for adjustment in cost changes, $519,899.88 in outstanding statutory payments, $62,745.25 variation for extension of the warm-up track

Although the project achieved 108 per cent of its scope, auditors questioned the financial impact of the claims and noted discrepancies between consultant records and Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs).

The refurbishment of the University of Ghana hostels, used as the Games Village, also attracted severe criticism from auditors, who identified an “opportunity cost for scope shrinkage” of $1.717 million.

One of the most contentious claims involved $1.176 million for repainting works. The Audit Service said the “computation of justification for this claim is questionable” because painting had already been captured as a lump sum item in the original contract.

Auditors further expressed scepticism that the entire hostel facilities could have deteriorated within only a few months to justify repainting at such cost.

Additional questionable claims included:

$555,668.01 for extension of time with cost

$219,167.59 for additional canteen works

$888,642.96 for bedsheets, pillows, pedestrian accesses, transportation bay covering and mattress replacements

The Audit Service said it “did not observe details” to assess the reasonableness of some of those additional expenses.

The construction of the access road to the Achimota Cricket Oval also came under heavy scrutiny, with auditors estimating possible savings of GH¢4.376 million had standard Department of Urban Roads (DUR) rates been applied.

The report highlighted major disparities between audited rates and contractor charges by Mawums Limited, including:

GH¢966,537.16 difference in excavation works, GH¢755,824.37 difference for imported fill material, GH¢1.094 million difference in road surfacing, GH¢791,340.20 difference in road pavement works, and GH¢252,189.80 difference in drainage works

Auditors questioned whether swampy conditions claimed around the road project actually existed and noted that some drainage works were “not observed” during inspection.

For the Achimota Cricket Pavilions project, the Audit Service estimated potential savings of GH¢346,793.21 after comparing rates with Architectural and Engineering Services Limited (AESL) benchmarks.

The report also criticised the project’s BoQ structure, describing it as “quite unconventional” with considerable variations in rates for similar works across building units. Auditors added that “several arithmetic errors made assessment and valuation a challenge,” creating “a false sense that saving was minimal.”

In addition, auditors noted that testing costs were lumped together with consultancy fees on multiple projects, yet no supporting test results or data were made available for verification.

Overall, the Audit Service estimated avoidable costs of more than $38.96 million and GH¢6.33 million across reviewed African Games infrastructure projects.

Kofi Adams advocates for free movement across Africa to boost sports development https://www.adomonline.com/kofi-adams-advocates-for-free-movement-across-africa-to-boost-sports-development/ Tue, 26 May 2026 06:39:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666013 The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has called for a strategic initiative to advance sports development across Africa, emphasizing the need to enhance regional mobility.

Speaking at the Basketball Africa League (BAL) Investor Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, he noted that Africa must create an enabling environment for sports development by removing barriers to movement and strengthening regional integration.

The summit, which brought together prominent stakeholders from Africa’s sports and infrastructure sectors, focused on leveraging sports as a driver of economic growth and sustainable development on the continent.

Mr. Adams participated in a high-level panel discussion alongside Rwanda’s Minister of Sports, Nelly Mukazayire; South Africa’s Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie; NBA Commissioner Adam Silver; and FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis.

The discussion highlighted opportunities for investment in sports infrastructure and strategies for industry sustainability.

Referring to Ghana’s efforts under President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Adams stated, “Africa should be able to travel freely among its nations.” He emphasized that easing movement across borders would significantly benefit sports development and economic progress.

He also underscored the importance of investing in grassroots and youth programs. “If we want to produce elite athletes, we must build a strong foundation,” he said. “Ghana has established structures like the Grassroots Sports Secretariat and the School Sports Organization to nurture young talent from an early age.”

Acknowledging that government initiatives alone are not enough, Hon. Adams called for the strengthening of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) frameworks to attract private sector investments. “A clear and well-defined PPP structure is essential so investors know the proper channels to follow,” he explained.

He concluded by emphasizing Africa’s potential as a producer of sporting talent: “Africa must be recognized as a production line for sports, not just a market for athletes. We need to create opportunities here for our athletes to develop and excel.”

The event was attended by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Ministers from various countries, NBA executives, and both current and former basketball stars. All participants shared a common vision of harnessing sports as a catalyst for economic and social progress across Africa.

As the continent continues to expand its sports ecosystem, leaders like Mr. Kofi Adams remain dedicated to ensuring that Africa not only participates in global sports but also becomes a significant producer of world-class athletes and sports entrepreneurs.

Allegri sacked after season of ‘unequivocal failure’ https://www.adomonline.com/allegri-sacked-after-season-of-unequivocal-failure/ Tue, 26 May 2026 06:09:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666031 AC Milan have sacked head coach Massimiliano Allegri after failing to qualify for the Champions League, in a season the club’s hierarchy described as an “unequivocal failure”.

Milan fell from third to fifth in Serie A after a 2-1 defeat by Cagliari on the final day to miss out on Champions League football for the second year in a row.

Inter Milan, Napoli, Roma and Como – for the first time in their history – will represent Italy in Europe’s top-tier club competition next season while AC Milan join Juventus in the Europa League.

“For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto,” read a statement from American investment group RedBird Capital, which bought AC Milan in 2022.

“The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure.

“It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganisation of football operations.”

Chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada have also left the club, the owners announced.

Allegri, 58, returned for a second spell with the Rossoneri in May last year, replacing Sergio Conceicao.

He previously managed the club between 2010 and 2014, winning the league in 2010-11 and the Italian Super Cup the following season.

Milan lost seven of their final 13 games in the campaign just ended as rivals Inter Milan won their second Scudetto in three seasons.

Mexico agrees to host Iran at World Cup instead of US https://www.adomonline.com/mexico-agrees-to-host-iran-at-world-cup-instead-of-us/ Tue, 26 May 2026 06:06:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666027 Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has agreed to allow Iran to be based in the country during the World Cup, claiming the US was unwilling to host them.

Sheinbaum said her government had been approached by Fifa after the US made it clear it did not want Iran’s squad to stay in the country during the tournament.

“We have no reason to deny them the possibility of staying in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said.

“The United States does not want the Iranian team to stay overnight, but they are going to play three matches there.

“So they asked us: ‘Can they stay overnight in Mexico?’ And we said: ‘Yes, no problem.’ We have no problem.”

Later on Monday, Fifa confirmed Iran’s training base will be at Centro Xoloitzcuintle in Tijuana, Mexico.

Iran were originally given Tucson, Arizona as their World Cup base with all three of their matches scheduled to take place in the US.

However, the ongoing war in the Middle East and related security concerns had led to uncertainty around their participation.

The World Cup is being co-hosted by the US, Canada and Mexico, with Iran scheduled to play New Zealand on 15 June and Belgium on 21 June – both in Los Angeles – and Egypt in Seattle on 26 June.

Iran are currently preparing for the tournament in Antalya, southern Turkey.

The BBC has contacted the White House and Fifa for comment.

Iran’s sports minister Ahmad Donyamali also confirmed world football’s governing body has said the Iran squad will be given visas to play in the US this summer.

“The Fifa president promised us that all our players would receive visas. There is no reason why our players should not receive visas,” he said.

The Iranian FA (FFIRI) had presented Fifa with a list of 10 conditions for their participation at the World Cup, including allowing players, coaches and officials who have completed military service with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to receive visas.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Iran’s players will be welcome at the tournament but individuals with links to the IRGC could face entry restrictions.

Taj was one of a number of FFIRI officials turned away at the Canadian border before April’s Fifa annual congress in Vancouver with Canada’s immigration minister telling parliament his visa was cancelled because of links to the IRGC.

Some members of the squad went to the US embassy in Ankara on Thursday to submit visa applications for the tournament.

Jordan leads star names at Guardiola leaving party https://www.adomonline.com/jordan-leads-star-names-at-guardiola-leaving-party/ Tue, 26 May 2026 06:04:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666021 Basketball legend Michael Jordan led the cast of star names to pay tribute to Pep Guardiola at the Manchester City manager’s farewell party.

Guardiola, 55, announced last week he will step down as City manager following a decade in charge, leading the club to 20 trophies during his tenure.

Jordan, one of the NBA’s all-time greats, and City’s former captain Vincent Kompany were surprise participants in Guardiola’s send-off at Co-Op Live arena, which was attended by 19,000 supporters.

“I just wanted to congratulate you on an unbelievable career,” said Chicago Bulls legend Jordan via a video message played on the big screen inside the venue.

Guardiola is known to be fond of basketball as well as being a keen golfer and Jordan added: “Enjoy your retirement. Good luck on the links and keep them straight. Congratulations.”

British golfer Tommy Fleetwood also delivered a video message, saying: “You deserve whatever you are about to do next.

“It is an honour to call you a friend and congratulations. You have been amazing.”

Veteran manager Neil Warnock added: “I can’t quite believe you are leaving. I have seen off so many managers but you are top of the pile.

“The best manager I have ever seen.”

Guardiola’s final game in charge was Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat by Aston Villa, a match in which the Spaniard broke down in tears.

Earlier on Monday, thousands of City fans lined the streets of Manchester to bid a final farewell to the departing Guardiola.

This season’s successful men’s, women’s and academy teams were driven on buses to Etihad Stadium, where they were greeted by a waiting crowd, before the entourage made its way to Co-Op Live for the ‘after party’.

All three teams celebrated their trophy victories on stage, with City women’s striker Khadija Shaw making the shock announcement that she has signed a new four-year contract to remain at the club.

Guardiola’s three children, as well as former captain Fernandinho, ex-sporting director Txiki Begiristain and goalkeeper Ederson – who left last summer – helped bring out all 20 trophies won under Guardiola.

Surprise appearances by current Bayern Munich boss Kompany and midfielder Jack Grealish, who spent a season-long loan spell at Everton, were loudly cheered by those in attendance.

Guardiola said goodbye for the final time in an interview with Oasis star Noel Gallagher.

“First of all, thank you so much for coming tonight to say bye,” said Guardiola.

“I feel tonight that really shows the connection this club has. [City chairman] Khaldoon Al Mubarak and all the people and all the City fans that were connected from the first minute.

“Thank you so much, I don’t have enough gratitude. Always, for the rest of my life, I will have you in my heart.”

Tributes were also paid to captain Bernardo Silva and defender John Stones, who will also be leaving the club this summer upon the expiry of their contracts.

Striker Erling Haaland said on stage: “It has been a pleasure to play with Bernardo and John – and of course Pep.

“We won a lot of trophies and I was happy to play with Bernardo and John because they are amazing footballers but even better people deep down.

“It has been an amazing journey, but we need to keep pushing and fighting even without them.”

Man Utd captain Fernandes takes on Keane over ‘lie’ https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-captain-fernandes-takes-on-keane-over-lie/ Tue, 26 May 2026 06:00:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666010 Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes firmly defended his character and achievements as he accused Roy Keane of telling a “lie” about his pursuit of the Premier League assists record.

Fernandes said Keane had put untrue “words in my mouth” on a recent podcast appearance and he hopes to contact the United legend to set him straight.

Keane described Fernandes as being at the centre of a “circus act” following United’s 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest on the penultimate weekend of the season.

He suggested the Portugal international was prioritising individual assists glory over the team’s interests in his eagerness to set the single-season record.

Speaking on podcast The Overlap, Keane had said: “After the [Forest] game he got interviewed and he said, the captain of Manchester United said: ‘A few times, I probably should have shot but I made them passes.’ Wow. How can your mindset of a footballer be going into a match to be about an individual record? He won’t be winning trophies, not with that mindset of the team.”

Fernandes’ actual post-match comments were: “There were probably moments today when I should have passed instead of shot. I’m very happy for the assist, but more than that, I’m happy for the win and to finish the season on a high.”

Former Republic of Ireland and United captain Keane appeared to have misinterpreted Fernandes’ comments rather than sought to distort the truth.

Keane posted a drawing of a braying donkey on Instagram on Monday evening, following Fernandes’ response, with the caption “Too much attention makes a donkey think he’s a lion”. It sparked speculation the comment was retaliation aimed at Fernandes, but Keane did not specify that.

Fernandes registered a record-equalling 20th assist of the season in United’s win against Forest, and then took the record outright on the final day in the victory at Brighton. It moved him past the mark set by Thierry Henry and Kevin de Bruyne.

His anger over Keane’s comments was clear as he told podcast The Diary of a CEO: “Like I’ve always said, I don’t mind criticism. I’ve always taken criticism from everyone and anyone and I never reply to anything or whatsoever.

“People have an opinion; they think it’s good, bad, whatever. What I don’t like is when people lie about things and [in] this case that you said about Roy Keane basically what he said is a lie because… either he saw some other interview or he can’t say that I said one thing that I’ve just not said and luckily for me is everything on record.

“I accept his criticism, I accept that he might like me as a player or not, like me as a person or not. But what I don’t like is that he puts words in my mouth that have not been said. That’s the only thing I don’t like.”

Fernandes is not the first player in the current squad to have voiced disapproval towards a United great.

Earlier this season, Lisandro Martinez was involved in a spat with Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt after they made comments about his height and ability to compete with Erling Haaland in the Manchester derby.

Fernandes was a key figure for United during the 2025-26 campaign, helping the club secure a third-place Premier League finish and a return to the Champions League after a two-season absence.

As well as laying on 21 goals, he also scored nine times in the English top flight.

His efforts were rewarded in May when he collected the Football Writers’ Association men’s Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season awards.

Fernandes says he has contacted former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to ask for Keane’s phone number so that he can confront the issue.

“Obviously I think I’ve always showed a lot of respect for Roy Keane and for everything he’s done for the club and for everything he’s always said,” Fernandes added.

“I’ve never ever had something to say, I’ve never said something wrong. I even asked Ole his number to text him to be honest, to have a word with him to say that I don’t mind the criticism [but] I don’t like when people lie about things that I say.

“Because this is like… it goes a little bit over the top of the things that I think are acceptable.

“I accept criticism. I accept that he can say things that I don’t like and I don’t like to see it. But as I said before, that improves me. What I don’t like is that people make their own words on what I say and it’s not true.

“Obviously I prefer Roy Keane to give me some praise sometimes because I’ve achieved something that not many players have achieved. I understand that this club is about winning trophies and I have never taken that off my mind.”

Keane had added to his criticism of Fernandes after the Forest game by questioning United’s contentment with their narrow victory, added: “They’re giving up two goals and everyone’s getting all giddy because he’s equalled the record for assists. It’s mind-boggling. It’s a circus act.”

Messi diagnosed with left hamstring fatigue, return plan uncertain https://www.adomonline.com/messi-diagnosed-with-left-hamstring-fatigue-return-plan-uncertain/ Tue, 26 May 2026 06:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2666073 Lionel Messi remained at the heart of an injury scare only weeks before the World Cup after medical tests diagnosed him with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring, Inter Miami announced on Monday.

The Major League Soccer club’s update provided no clear timetable for the Argentine superstar’s return after his abrupt exit from Miami’s 6-4 victory over Philadelphia in the 73rd minute on Sunday.

The 38-year-old icon for the defending World Cup champions grabbed the back of his left leg and asked to come off, but appeared to be walking normally as he made his exit to the locker room.

“After undergoing further medical tests this Monday, the initial diagnosis indicates an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring,” Inter Miami said in a statement.

“The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress.”

That gave precious little indication about the status of the eight-time Ballon D’Or winner as Argentina prepares to defend the crown in a World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico that kicks off June 11.

Argentina’s first match will be five days later against Algeria in Kansas City.

Messi has managed his workload since joining Inter Miami in 2023, with team staff regularly excusing him from matches in congested fixture periods.

MLS has started a break for the World Cup.

Messi has not formally confirmed he plans to play in the World Cup, but is widely expected to return for what would be a record-matching sixth appearance at the finals.

Argentina’s squad is due to be named next week and the South American giants will journey to the United States for pre-World Cup friendlies against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.

New Edubiase owner defends Samuel Attah Kumi after record-breaking Goal King feat https://www.adomonline.com/new-edubiase-owner-defends-samuel-attah-kumi-after-record-breaking-goal-king-feat/ Mon, 25 May 2026 13:32:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665819 Owner of New Edubiase United FC, Alhaji Abdul Salam Yakubu, has come to the defence of Bibiani Gold Stars striker Samuel Attah Kumi following criticism surrounding his record-breaking performance on the final day of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Attah Kumi came under scrutiny after scoring six goals in Bibiani Gold Stars’ emphatic 8-3 victory over relegated Techiman Eleven Wonders FC, a result that secured him the league’s Goal King award.

The prolific striker’s remarkable display not only helped Gold Stars finish their campaign on a high but also saw him make history as the first player to score six goals in a single Ghana Premier League match.

The performance, however, sparked debate within sections of the football fraternity, particularly due to the nature of the final-day fixture and the heavy scoreline against an already relegated Eleven Wonders side.

Responding to the criticism, Salam Yakubu dismissed doubts about the legitimacy of Attah Kumi’s achievement, insisting the forward possesses the talent and quality to deliver such performances.

“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a player scoring six goals in a match. I know the player personally; he’s naturally talented and capable of delivering that kind of performance,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

Yakubu’s comments add to growing support for the striker, whose final-day heroics ensured he emerged as the top scorer of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.

Attah Kumi’s six-goal haul capped an impressive individual campaign and highlighted his importance to Bibiani Gold Stars, who mounted a strong title challenge throughout the season.

Despite their strong finish, Gold Stars narrowly missed out on the league title, ending the campaign in second place with 60 points, two behind champions Medeama SC.

While debate over the final-day result continues, Yakubu insists Attah Kumi’s achievement should be celebrated as a reflection of his natural ability and attacking prowess rather than questioned.

Kotoko expressed gratitude to supporters across the country for their unwavering loyalty throughout a difficult season, describing them as the foundation of the club. Management also apologised for the inconsistent performances that left fans frustrated over the course of the campaign.

Looking ahead, the club confirmed plans for a comprehensive restructuring aimed at restoring its domestic dominance and re-establishing its presence on the continental stage.

Nations FC apologise to fans after relegation blow https://www.adomonline.com/nations-fc-apologise-to-fans-after-relegation-blow/ Mon, 25 May 2026 08:52:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665683 Nations FC have issued a formal apology to supporters following their relegation from the Ghana Premier League, bringing a difficult campaign to a painful conclusion.

The club ended their season on a positive note with a narrow 1-0 victory over Karela United at the Aliu Mahama Stadium on the final day. However, results elsewhere went against them, confirming their drop from the top flight despite the win.

In an emotional end-of-season statement, Nations FC expressed regret over the outcome and accepted responsibility for their failure to avoid relegation.

“This is a very painful moment for everyone connected to the club, and we sincerely apologise to our fans, sponsors, partners and supporters for falling short this season,” the statement read. “We take full responsibility for this outcome. Despite the effort and commitment shown, it was not enough to keep our place in the league. But this is not the end of our story. We will regroup, fight, and work tirelessly to bring Nations FC back to where it belongs.”

Despite their league setback, the club still has a route to continental football. Nations FC will face Dreams FC in the MTN FA Cup final, with victory potentially securing qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

CK Akonnor guides Gor Mahia to Kenyan Premier League title https://www.adomonline.com/ck-akonnor-guides-gor-mahia-to-kenyan-premier-league-title/ Mon, 25 May 2026 08:50:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665665 Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor has guided Gor Mahia to a historic 22nd Kenyan Premier League title, sealing the championship with two matches still remaining in the season.

The coronation was confirmed on Sunday, May 24, 2026, after nearest rivals AFC Leopards suffered a 2–1 defeat to APS Bomet. The result left Leopards four points behind with just one game left to play, while Gor Mahia still have two fixtures in hand—making their lead mathematically unassailable.

Gor Mahia sit firmly at the summit with 68 points. Their Week 33 fixture against Mara Sugar in Homa Bay had earlier been postponed due to a court-related issue, but the disruption did little to slow their charge toward the title.

Since taking charge in August 2025, Akonnor has overseen a remarkable transformation at the club, restoring consistency and a competitive edge. His technical team includes assistant coach Bismark Kofi Mensah, goalkeeping coach Ben Owu, and video analyst Joshua Kofi Boafo.

Ghanaian influence has also been central to the team’s success on the pitch, with contributions from Enock Morrison, George Amonoo, Ebenezer Adukwaw, and Ebenezer Assifuah playing key roles throughout the campaign.

The former Ghana international, who has previously managed Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, is now expected to lead Gor Mahia into next season’s CAF Champions League campaign as the Kenyan giants turn their attention to continental football after another dominant domestic season.

2026 WC: We can beat any top team – Ghana Forward Antoine Semenyo https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-can-beat-any-top-team-ghana-forward-antoine-semenyo/ Mon, 25 May 2026 06:46:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665605 Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has expressed a strong belief that the Black Stars are capable of matching and defeating any opposition at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, the Manchester City striker said his focus is on competing at the highest level and proving Ghana’s quality on the global stage.

“It will just feel normal. I don’t think I’ll feel anything. I think if anything, I’ll just want to win and prove that we can compete with the top nations,” he said.

“I don’t think it changes anything for me, but I know that playing against my friends, I want to prove my point. I want to show that we are a top nation, we can play together, and we can beat all the top teams,” Semenyo added.

Ghana, four-time African champions, will be making their fifth World Cup appearance when the tournament kicks off in North America this summer. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

Their campaign begins on June 17 against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto, before facing England at the Boston Stadium on June 23. They will wrap up their group stage fixtures against Croatia at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 27.

After successive group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Ghana will be aiming to finally progress beyond the first round and make a deeper run in the tournament.

The four-time African champions will make their fifth appearance at the tournament and have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, Semenyo highlighted the unity and belief within the squad as key factors behind their confidence.

“We’ve got the backing of our nation, for one. Obviously, loads of prayers and blessings over the team, but we’ve got a good management staff, we’ve got good background staff, and everyone is just so positive and confident, and that gives us the positivity to go out on the pitch, do what we need to do and win games,” Semenyo said.

He added that the team’s balance could prove crucial on football’s biggest stage, pointing to both their attacking quality and defensive organisation.

“So, it plays a massive part and definitely goes a long way. I feel like we’ve got a lot of attacking talent and killer instincts — a lot of players who just want to get into positions, shoot and score. Defensively, we’re solid as well. We work together as a team,” he added.

The Black Stars will begin their Group L campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17 before facing England on June 23 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Ghana will conclude their group-stage fixtures against Croatia on June 27.

After suffering group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups, Ghana will be aiming to advance beyond the first round for the first time in more than a decade.

Ghana secured qualification for the 23rd edition of the FIFA World Cup despite the disappointment of missing out on the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia for the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA, Semenyo expressed confidence in the Black Stars squad, saying the players are determined to create their own success story on football’s biggest stage.

“I think that’s the intention. I feel like we do want to write our own story. We’ve got such a good team, and we just need to prove to the world that we can be up there and compete with everyone else,” Semenyo said.

“I feel like that’s the only question right now, so once we do that, that’ll be the story written.”

The forward also shared his personal ambition for the tournament, insisting Ghana can progress beyond the group stage and potentially achieve something memorable.

“I don’t want to jinx anything, but I think, for me personally, getting through the group stage would be a start for us. I feel like we can go on and do special things,” he added.

Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama at BMO Field in Toronto on June 17 before taking on England at Boston Stadium on June 23.

Como, Roma reach Champions League, Milan and Juve miss out https://www.adomonline.com/como-roma-reach-champions-league-milan-and-juve-miss-out/ Mon, 25 May 2026 06:10:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665608 Como qualified for the Champions League for the first time in their history on Sunday, the lakeside club being joined by Roma in Serie A’s top four as AC Milan imploded in a 2-1 defeat by Cagliari.

Milan’s loss left the seven-time kings of Europe out of the top four after a calamitous end to the season.

Juventus also missed out on an eventful final day marred by fan violence that caused their derby at Torino to be delayed by more than an hour.

Como’s 4-1 win at Cremonese, who drop down to Serie B, and Milan falling to a shock home defeat was enough for Cesc Fabregas’s side to cap their incredible rise from the lower leagues to Europe’s top table.

Como will finish the season fourth, two points behind Roma whose 2-0 win at already-relegated Verona ensured third place and an end to their long absence from the Champions League.

Roma have not played in Europe’s elite club competition since being knocked out by Porto in the last 16 in 2019, and a top-four finish came following goals from in-form Donyell Malen and Stephan El Shaarawy.

Malen tapped in Paulo Dybala’s brilliant low cross which he whipped in after the Netherlands striker’s penalty was saved by Lorenzo Montipo, while El Shaarawy sealed the deal in stoppage time of his last match for the club.

But even that achievement pales into insignificance compared to Como, who have never played in European competition in their history and were in the third tier of Italian football when acquired by tobacco giant Djarum in 2019.

Those three results also meant that Juventus will play in the Europa League next season, with the damage done in last weekend’s home loss to Fiorentina.

Juve’s match at Torino kicked off over an hour late for “public safety” after one of the Turin giants’ fans was admitted to hospital following pre-match clashes with rival supporters.

A win for Luciano Spalletti’s side would mean a fifth-placed finish, with Milan, whose livid fans protested loudly against owners RedBird before, during and after a humiliating defeat, dropping to sixth.

MILAN DISASTER, CONTE’S FAREWELL

Milan started the day in third and looked set to reach the Champions League when Alexis Saelemaekers scored in the second minute.

But tap-ins in each half from Gennaro Borrelli and Juan Rodriguez left Milan out of the top four and back in crisis.

Milan’s form has been dismal since beating champions Inter Milan over two months ago, a derby triumph which looked to have reopened the Scudetto race.

Instead a paltry 10 points from their final 10 matches left Milan, and RedBird, facing a summer which is likely to be full of changes, even if owner Gerry Cardinale seems to have faith with coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Napoli fans said goodbye to Antonio Conte during an uneventful 1-0 win over Udinese which gave their team a final position of second, 11 points behind new champions Inter at the end of the campaign.

Rasmus Hojlund, now a permanent signing after Napoli qualified for the Champions League last weekend, rattled in his 16th goal of a successful first season in Italy.

However it will be a summer of changes in southern Italy with Bologna’s Vincenzo Italiano the man most cited as Conte’s replacement.

“It’s been an honour, really special to coach Napoli… It’s been two great seasons, an exceptional experience,” said Conte, who is tipped to take charge of the national team.

Napoli’s owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has rejected a $2 billion offer to acquire the club from a group of investors led by Underdog Global Partners.

De Laurentiis has enjoyed frequently tense relations with Napoli fans despite being the man who saved the club from bankruptcy in 2004, and who ended a 33-year wait for a league title.

That 2023 Scudetto, one of the biggest stories of the century in European football, was followed up by another last season under Conte who after the match did a lap of the pitch to bid farewell.

Spain — who crashed out in the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup but then won Euro 2024 in style — are among the favourites to win this summer’s tournament, kicking off against Cape Verde on June 15 before playing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.

De la Fuente said he wasn’t concerned by fitness doubts over Yamal, Nico Williams and Mikel Merino, saying he had “no doubt” the trio would be ready for Spain’s debut game in Atlanta.

In an event in Madrid, De la Fuente named Athletic Club’s Unai Simón, Arsenal’s David Raya and Barcelona’s Joan García as his three goalkeepers, with Real Sociedad’s Álex Remiro absent.

In defence, De la Fuente included Marc Cucurella, Alejandro Grimaldo, Pau Cubarsí, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Pubill, Eric García, Marcos Llorente and Pedro Porro.

In midfield, he named Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, Martín Zubimendi, Gavi, Rodri, Álex Baena and Merino.

Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo, Williams, Yéremy Pino, Ferran Torres, Borja Iglesias, Víctor Muñoz and Yamal make up the forward line.

As well as Huijsen and Carvajal — who hadn’t made Spain’s 55-player long list — Atletico Madrid’s Robin Le Normand was also omitted.

Barcelona’s Fermín López is absent after suffering a broken foot.

“It’s difficult,” De la Fuente said, when asked about leaving players out. “We think about every possible scenario that can happen in games with our opponents, and their characteristics… We’ve chosen these 26. I think we’ve covered the needs of the team… I don’t look at whether they play for one team or another.”

De la Fuente also named nine “support players” including Real Madrid’s Gonzalo García and Barcelona’s Marc Bernal, who will be with the squad in training ahead of the tournament.

Spain will play a pre-tournament friendly against Iraq in A Coruña, Galicia, on Thursday, June 4, before crossing the Atlantic for another friendly match with Peru in Puebla, Mexico on June 9.

De la Fuente said Spain’s medical reports suggested Yamal, Williams and Merino — who returned for Arsenal in their last game of the Premier League season on Sunday — would be available to play Cape Verde on June 15.

“We’re very calm,” he said. “I think that if there are no setbacks, we can almost have everyone available from the first game. The doctor and fitness coach have been visiting the clubs and talking to them. We’ve been coordinating… I have no doubt they’ll be ready for the first game, and if not, they’ll be ready for the second.”

De la Fuente praised Carvajal — who also said farewell to Madrid in their last game of the season at the Bernabéu — and former captain Álvaro Morata, who led Spain at Euro 2024.

They’ve left an unforgettable legacy of leadership,” the coach said. “But the generation behind them are perfectly prepared, they’re cut from the same cloth.”

Lionel Messi suffers injury scare before World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/lionel-messi-suffers-injury-scare-before-world-cup/ Mon, 25 May 2026 06:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665814 Argentina star Lionel Messi suffered an injury scare before the World Cup, requesting to be substituted during Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer game on Sunday.

Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos later suggested the 38-year-old forward’s replacement against the Philadelphia Union was precautionary because of pitch conditions in a wet Miami.

The 2022 World Cup winner came off in the 73rd minute of the game after clutching the back of his left leg, but appeared to be walking normally as he headed straight down the tunnel.

“As far as I know, we don’t have a [medical] report on that yet, but he really was fatigued,” Hoyos said after the game when asked about Messi’s condition.

“He was tired; the pitch was heavy and when in doubt, the standard approach is always to ensure you don’t take any risks.”

Messi has not formally confirmed he plans to play for the defending champions in the World Cup, which begins on 11 June, but is widely expected to return for what will be a record-equalling sixth appearance at the finals which are being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Argentina’s squad is due to be named next week, with their opening game against Algeria on 16 June.

Since moving to Miami in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has carefully managed his workload but has still spent spells on the sideline with hamstring issues.

Africa’s Golden Age: Celebrating a continent of champions https://www.adomonline.com/africas-golden-age-celebrating-a-continent-of-champions/ Mon, 25 May 2026 05:28:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665853 Africa Day is far more than a date on the calendar; it is a profound celebration of resilience, rich heritage, and the boundless potential of a truly magnificent continent.

It is a day to reflect on the unifying power of our shared identity and to honour the sons and daughters of African soil who are reshaping the global narrative.

In the realm of sports, this continent has become an unstoppable force of nature, consistently producing athletes who defy limits and redefine greatness.

As the ultimate home of sporting entertainment, SuperSport remains centrally woven into the fabric of these celebrations, proudly shining a spotlight on the sheer brilliance that Africa gifts to the world.

The collective rise of African sports has never been more evident than it is right now, punctuated by the historic milestone of a record ten African teams qualifying for this year’s FIFA World Cup.

This collective triumph is beautifully mirrored by astonishing individual exploits that have left the world in awe.

Kenyan sensation Sebastian Sawe recently etched his name into the annals of athletic immortality, conquering the London Marathon to become the first human ever to finish an official marathon in under two hours with an astounding time of 1:59:30.

Meanwhile, the legendary Julius Yego,  affectionately known as the “YouTube Man,” extended his magnificent legacy by capturing a historic sixth consecutive continental javelin gold at the Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Accra this year.

For Yego, this landmark triumph is deeply intertwined with a profound sense of African identity and pride.

“To me, being African is being born and raised in Africa—a resilient character shaped by the vast African culture,” Yego told SuperSport.

“I love being the dark African, a strong human being.”

This latest victory marks another spectacular peak in a career he describes as an “incredible journey with lots of successes and highs, but also compounded with near misses and disappointments of injuries.

“Through the grit of his historic run, Yego aims to inspire the next wave of talent, proving that background does not dictate destiny.”

“I think my career has been a revelation to both the current and future generations of athletes,” he noted. “No matter where we are born, that can’t shape our futures; dedication to training and determination will take you far.”

Ultimately, his gold-medal legacy stands as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit he champions.

“I will still believe that being African is being resilient, culturally rooted, and shaped by traditions… we also love our diverse cultures across our communities.”

East African dominance was further celebrated when Rwanda’s Emeline Imanizabayo delivered one of the year’s most breathtaking surprises, capturing a shock 5,000m gold against heavily favoured fields at the African Senior Championships.

Across tracks, courts, and octagons, the continent’s athletes continue to leave an indelible mark.

Botswana’s Collen Busang Kebinatshipi  shocked the sprinting world by clocking a phenomenal 9.89 seconds in the 100m at the Botswana Championshiops, joining an elite global fraternity capable of going sub-44 seconds in the 400m and sub-10 seconds in the 100m.

In the world of mixed martial arts, Cameroonian middleweight Ateba Gautier, fittingly nicknamed “The Storm,” secured a dominant victory in the UFC to cement his status as a terrifying new contender.

Meanwhile, South Sudans Deng Deng , who plays for ASC Ville de Dakar, has been a standout forward and has been making massive waves as one of the most explosive players to watch in the BAL.

South Africa, too, has enjoyed a year of spectacular sporting glory, contributing massively to the continent’s pedigree.

Just last night (Sunday),  Mamelodi Sundowns capped off a fantastic season by being crowned African champions and winning their second CAF Champions League.

Orlando Pirates also made waves this season by winning the domestic treble, ending their league drought of 14 years.

Proteas captain Laura Wolvaardt showcased her masterful class, earning Player of the Series honours with an unbelievable batting average of 82.50 during the recent bilateral T20 International series against India.

The nation was moved to tears by the emotional return of Luvo Manyonga, who captured the national long jump title before soaring to gold at the African Athletics Senior Championships in Accra.

On the track, Akani Simbine continues to lead the international sprint division, holding the fastest 100m time globally this year at a blistering 9.90 seconds.

The nation’s fighting spirit was fiercely represented by Dricus du Plessis, the former reigning UFC Middleweight Champion, alongside rising 21-year-old boxer Tyla Promnick, who brilliantly captured the South African mini-flyweight title, and Bernice “The Badger” Ferreira, who claimed the vacant IBO World Junior Lightweight crown.

Promnick believes her identity inside the ring is deeply rooted in the unbreakable spirit of her homeland.

Reflecting on her historic title victory, the 21-year-old boxing prodigy says that carrying the green and gold into battle is a profound responsibility.

“Winning the SA mini-flyweight title was bigger than just me,” Promnick shares. “Every time I step into the ring, I carry my family, my team, my country, and my continent with me.”

For Promnick, the grit and determination required to compete at the highest level of the sport are directly shaped by the unique dual nature of the South African character, which she describes as “carrying both resilience and warmth in the same heart.”

She attributes her fierce drive to this profound continental legacy.

“To represent Africa means representing resilience. Africans have always had to fight harder, dream bigger, and prove ourselves over and over again.”

Driven by a deep sense of pride and gratitude, Promnick is determined to keep showing the world the true, unyielding depth of African talent every single time she steps between the ropes.

Guardiola says Man City successor cannot be ‘copy and paste’ https://www.adomonline.com/guardiola-says-man-city-successor-cannot-be-copy-and-paste/ Mon, 25 May 2026 04:38:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665598 Departing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he hoped his successor can be true to themselves, warning that any attempt to find a carbon copy of him would likely ‌backfire.

Guardiola, who led City to six Premier League titles, a Champions League triumph and the Club World Cup, will leave at the end of the season after a decade in charge.

Italian Enzo Maresca, who has previously coached Chelsea and Leicester City and also worked under Guardiola as an assistant at City, is reported to be the leading candidate for the top job at the Manchester club.

Asked if City’s administration had sought his advice on the next manager, Guardiola told reporters on Friday: “It doesn’t work to copy and paste in this kind of job.

“You have to be unique, natural and yourself and the new manager will be himself,” the Spaniard added, speaking ahead ‌of City’s final league game of the season at home against Aston Villa.

“The moment it starts to be a copy of another one… Everyone is everyone. It has to be like that. And that’s why everything is going to be good.”

Guardiola leaves City with the spectre of the 115 charges of alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules still looming large over his tenure, but he said he was confident there was no cause for concern.

“Because I trust them,” he added.

“I trust them! Because I spoke with them and I trust how they behave and (what) they did. So what happened — there will be the resolution. I trust them.”

The moment that broke Guardiola on day a decade of glory ended https://www.adomonline.com/the-moment-that-broke-guardiola-on-day-a-decade-of-glory-ended/ Mon, 25 May 2026 04:34:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2665595 Pep Guardiola had been playing it cool in the scorching heat that accompanied his final game in charge of Manchester City. Then he cracked.

There were tears – and plenty of them.

As captain Bernardo Silva’s number 20 went up on the fourth official’s board on 59 minutes, Guardiola could not keep his emotion in check any longer.

The Portugal playmaker shed tears as he was given a guard of honour by both sets of players as he left the pitch. And it was then that they started to stream down his manager’s cheeks too.

The two men, such pivotal figures in City’s recent domination of English football, embraced on the touchline.

That raw moment of affection between two greats of the Premier League was captured by photographers and will be printed, framed and hung up in the corridors of Etihad Stadium alongside those of icons Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Yaya Toure.

Guardiola wiped his face dry with his white t-shirt and tried to regain his composure as his side strained for one final victory under his management.

It was not to be. But despite defeat at the hands of an Aston Villa side high on success after Wednesday’s Europa League win, the loss was rendered instantly irrelevant by the sound of the full-time whistle that sparked emotion on the pitch and in the stands.

Guardiola attempted to find the words to sum up the feelings of the day. “This chapter will always be there,” said the 55-year-old.

“Bernardo was emotional today, before the game. If you want to cry then cry, if you want to laugh then laugh. Emotions – you have to express them. I don’t cry, but when I see somebody else cry, then I cry.”

Fans flock to see end of Guardiola era

The merchandise stalls were doing a roaring trade before kick-off as flags and scarves emblazoned with Guardiola’s face were bought by those attending the end of this incredible era.

The arrival of the City team bus was greeted by hundreds of supporters lining up alongside the barriers in front of the Colin Bell Stand entrance, hoping to catch a glimpse of Guardiola entering the stadium for one last time as their manager.

His tenure has delivered the Premier League title six times, as well as the holy grail of a Champions League plus three FA Cups and five Carabao Cups.

City have never previously seen success like it. Very, very few have. Only the great Manchester United era under Sir Alex Ferguson and Bob Paisley’s Liverpool in the 1970s and ’80s have enjoyed such trophy laden years.

A huge banner was unfurled in the East Stand as the players emerged onto the pitch before kick-off that read ’10 years with Pep – Game changer, history maker, City forever’.

Villa boss Unai Emery, who called Guardiola football’s “only genius” in the build-up to the game, presented his fellow Spaniard with a memento before the match began.

Guardiola barely flinched when his penultimate signing Antoine Semenyo volleyed home the opening goal, instead remaining in his seat and seemingly taking it all in.

To the left, his name will be immortalised at Etihad Stadium forever, with the newly expanded north end renamed the ‘Pep Guardiola Stand’ in his honour.

Guardiola said on Friday he was incredibly proud his father’s name will be adorned inside the stadium forever and 95-year-old Valenti was there for his son’s final game in charge.

His voice cracked during his farewell speech on the pitch, as supporters serenaded him with chants of “We’ve got Guardiola” one last time. He made one final lap of honour and exited down the tunnel.

“Many memories – forget the titles, it’s the memories. All of us,” said Guardiola. “All the people here are extraordinary.

“Life is made of periods, we lived an incredible period. If I had energy I would stay here. A new person has to do this job.

“Our time was good. Thank you to all the people, the new stand is beautiful.”

Emery, whose side finished fourth thanks to Ollie Watkins’ two goals defeating City, added: “A huge honour for me to compete with Pep Guardiola. He is the best. I built my career a lot of time competing against him, especially in Spain.

“The level he has – he is the best coach in the world.”

‘Man City fans need to be patient with Maresca’

It was fitting that Sunday’s game took Guardiola – City’s greatest manager – to the top of the list for most games in charge of the club.

Guardiola won 416 of his 593 games in charge, a victory ratio of 70.2%. Only Manchester United’s Ferguson, with 13, has claimed more top-flight English titles.

His points-per-game rate of 2.28 is unmatched by any manager to have taken charge of 20 or more games in England and City remain the only side to win 100 points in a Premier League season.

“10 more years, 10 more years, Guardiola” was the chant echoing from the South Stand in the knowledge that the Spaniard will take up an ambassadorial role upon his departure.

Negotiations with Enzo Maresca are at an advanced stage, so it remains to be seen when his appointment as Guardiola’s successor will officially be confirmed.

“The Man City fans just need to be patient with Enzo Maresca,” former striker Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It is similar to David Moyes following Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s an impossible task following Pep Guardiola with the way his teams have played, the way he has adapted over the years and the huge amount of trophies he’s won.

“In many ways, they have won the FA Cup and League Cup this season but they will still be a little bit disappointed. That is how far they have come under Guardiola.”

And Guardiola’s advice to his successor?

“They have to be themselves,” he said. “That is the most important thing. The way they communicate, the way they play, they have to be them.

“This club is good at many things, and they do transitions really well. It will be good.”

Goodbye to Silva, Stones and two old favourites

Pep Guardiola and Bernardo Silva

Guardiola has been the dominant figure at City over the past 10 years – but the key departures from the Etihad this summer do not end with the manager.

Captain Silva and defender John Stones will both leave upon the expiry of their contracts next month and they were presented with framed shirts by their manager.

Silva has been one of Guardiola’s pivotal players, featuring in more games – an astonishing 460 – for the Spaniard than any other player during his career.

“It’s really tough to put into words my feelings towards City, to you guys,” Silva said while addressing the crowd. “I don’t think I will ever feel the same love ever in my life. This will forever be my family and I’m really grateful.”

Stones added: “I can’t express the gratitude that I feel for the love that you’ve given me. It’s been a dream come true.

“From the bottom of my heart and my family’s hearts, thank you so much.”

There was a chance to give a proper send-off to two former players, too.

Ex-captain Ilkay Gundogan – who scored the winner on the final day against Villa in 2022 – and goalkeeper Ederson both returned to the Etihad to take the acclaim having left for Turkey on deadline day last summer.

Guardiola’s right-hand man Manel Estiarte, fitness coach Lorenzo Buenaventura and long-serving goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor were all recognised for their contributions too, with the trio also set to depart.

It was truly the end of an era at the Etihad, an era Guardiola, his players and the City supporters will cherish forever.
