The attack occurred on the Bibiani–Goaso road last Sunday after the Ghana Premier League side had returned from a fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park.

According to reports, armed men blocked the road and opened fire when the bus driver attempted to reverse after sensing danger. Players and officials were forced to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.

During the chaos, forward Dominic Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead. Six other players also suffered minor injuries.

Police subsequently launched a manhunt for the attackers.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 16, the service said two suspects had been arrested in connection with both the robbery and the killing of the 20-year-old forward, who was on loan from Aduana FC.

One of the suspects reportedly sustained gunshot wounds during an exchange of fire with police intelligence operatives and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.

Frimpong had been one of Berekum Chelsea’s promising young players this season, scoring twice in 13 league appearances before his death.

Football authorities, including FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), as well as several clubs, have since paid tribute to the player, whose killing has shocked the football community.

Mohammed Kudus at the heart of both Tottenham’s and Ghana’s parallel crises https://www.adomonline.com/mohammed-kudus-at-the-heart-of-both-tottenhams-and-ghanas-parallel-crises/ Thu, 16 Apr 2026 00:38:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651947 There’s a cruel symmetry to two unravelling crises thousands of kilometres apart, where Accra and London are bound by instability, underachievement and despair.

In Ghana, the Black Stars are trying to drag themselves out of one of the bleakest spells in recent memory, while in England, Tottenham Hotspur are staring into a season that has veered from dysfunction to impending disaster.

Both have sacked their coaches — two in Spurs’ case; both have invested resources only to lurch from tactical confusion to emotional drift and back again, and both of these fabled institutions, these fallen giants, are clinging to the idea that a reset can save them.

For both, this rebooting will be taking place without the injured Mohammed Kudus.

Losing Kudus to a ‘significant quad injury’ stretches beyond the absence of one more name on the teamsheet. His loss will have a decisive, significant impact on both FIFA World Cup dreams and English Premier League survival hopes.

For Spurs, he proved — at least on occasion under Thomas Frank — that he was that rare attacker who could conjure chaos from nothing.

Without Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, both yet to feature this season, he was increasingly invaluable, with individual displays of excellence against Burnley and Leeds United in the first half of the campaign encouraging Tottenham fans to believe that they were primed for a push for Champions League qualification.

For Ghana, he’s been the difference-maker, a rare touch of quality in this demoralising cycle, where the four-time African champions have found themselves shorn of the individual excellence and strength in depth of squads gone by.

The parallels between these two decrepit edifices are striking.

Ghana’s recent collapse has been marked, because of both the results and the fashion in which they’ve arrived. Qualification for the Qatar World Cup papered over the cracks that had been increasingly evident, while ultimate failure to qualify for the bloated 24-team 2025 Africa Cup of Nations was a national embarrassment.

Otto Addo’s exit felt inevitable, but hasn’t erased the damage of the previous spell. It arguably came too late, and surely has come too close to the World Cup for Carlos Queiroz to succeed to the best of his abilities.

Similarly, for Tottenham, Igor Tudor’s dismissal felt inevitable, but the board’s decision to cut with him has not solved the damage done during those miserable 44 days. Last year’s Europa League success under Ange Postecoglou partly papered over the cracks of Spurs’ structural decline, but there’s been nowhere to hide this season.

Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival has surely come too late, and surely too close to an increasingly inevitable relegation for the Italian to succeed to the best of his abilities.

Their appointments have reflected their institutions’ desire to recruit specialists in order to pull them out of the mire in which they find themselves.

Queiroz will offer Ghana the experience that was so often questioned under his predecessor Addo, even if his tournament record isn’t particularly stellar, while De Zerbi is meant to bring boldness, a front-foot playing style and vitality back to Spurs.

Both men surely need time, however, to implement their visions and establish their standards, although given the impending World Cup and Spurs’ plight, it’s a luxury that neither possesses.

That’s why the loss of Kudus becomes such an acute agony.

He’s more than just a talented attacker, he’s a talismanic figure of hope, with his flamboyance, his invention, his fine delivery from open play or set pieces, and his ability to receive possession while under pressure.

He can stretch the play, forge openings, trouble opponents with his tenacity and pace, change the tempo and dynamic of a match with his dribbling, and transform his side’s fortunes with an effort from range.

In various different modes of play, each of these teams would be markedly strong with Kudus present, whether it’s in build-up, transition, taking chances… he’s an irreplaceable loss, whether against weaker or stronger opponents.

On one hand, Spurs have stronger options – on paper – than Ghana, so could better absorb his loss, but by the same token, the Lilywhites have also been dealing with a devastating injury record this season, making Kudus’s setback all the more painful.

Given the club’s misery with injuries this term — at times, over a dozen players have been sidelined — one could forgive a certain suspicion on the part of the GFA that Spurs sought to rush back Kudus too quickly following the hamstring injury he suffered in the winter.

Given the incoming De Zerbi’s desire to have him available, and Tottenham’s crisis situation, a certain urgency on their part could have been forgiven, but given their medical team’s catastrophic recent record, and the impending World Cup, it looks to have been a disastrous determination from Ghana’s point of view.

Given the club’s extensive investment in recovery science, risk prevention and load monitoring, given Spurs’ facilities, there must be an enquiry into how another superstar has been lost for the run-in.

There are consequences for all parties.

Kudus is a man for moments. Spurs need as many of those match-defining moments as they can muster in their remaining six fixtures of the season. Without Kudus, it’s hard to see where this magic comes from.

Ghana face a similar dilemma, albeit in a different context. Queiroz’s likely approach at the World Cup is well established, and we can see the blueprint in his previous campaigns – notably with the Iran national team.

Expect compact distances, disciplined defensive structure, measured possession and carefully chosen moments to attack. Ghana may be a little more expansive against Panama, but against England and Croatia, we can already see how they’ll set up.

Queiroz, unlike De Zerbi, is no purist. He wants control, certainly, but he knows that there are different ways to navigate tournament football, not all of which involve controlling the ball.

Typically, the Mozambique-born head coach’s international teams play narrow, with a midblock, close out the central zones of the pitch, and prefer to deal with threats out wide. He likes his fullbacks to progress the ball, his midfielders control territory, and forwards’ ability to forge openings (and take them) are favoured.

Kudus would have been a huge asset, given his ability to improvise, to both create and take chances.

If Ghana are being outplayed, are short of possession — as they’ll expect to be against their two European opponents — Kudus could have been the antidote. He could absorb pressure, drag markers, roll opposition, and give Ghana a dimension the other way as well.

Without him, where does the Black Stars’ main threat come from? Antoine Semenyo surely steps into a more prominent role without his compatriot.

The Manchester City man is enjoying a strong end to the season under Pep Guardiola — he was magnificent in the recent 4-0 demolition of Liverpool — and while the prospect of him and Kudus dovetailing together at the grandest stage, he could slip comfortably into a role on the right flank should Queiroz not desire him in a more central role.

A front three of Semenyo, Jordan Ayew and Adul Fatawu would suit Queiroz, while Prince Kwabena Adu — who featured in both of Addo’s last two matches, having made his debut in November — may retain his central role under the new coach, as the main direct beneficiary of Kudus’s injury.

While the Czechia-based new boy is an intriguing arrival in the camp, two more familiar faces could also take more prominent roles at the World Cup in light of Kudus’s absence.

Kamaldeen Sulemana has struggled to impress since arriving at Atalanta, with only three goal contributions in Serie A so far this term, but his ability to play out wide or through the middle makes him a versatile addition for Queiroz. He also has that rare dribbling ability to beat a man, stretch play, and give opponents something to think about in behind.

Could Ernest Nuamah also be the unlikeliest of beneficiaries? The speedster hasn’t been seen since April 2025 after being sidelined for a year with a knee injury. He’s recently returned to training, and while normally, has probably left it too late to force his way back into contention, could see his stock rise if he can return to action and prove his sharpness with Olympique Lyonnais.

He’s another who would relish one-on-one combat, and could be a valuable squad addition who could facilitate the kind of absorb-pressure, stay structured, counter-attack-with-speed-and-efficiency approach that Queiroz is expected to favour.

While there’s no doubting that Ghana and Tottenham are comfortably better with Kudus, the Black Stars do have options and do have players who can offer some, if not all, of the qualities that the stricken midfielder could bring to the table.

Perhaps Queiroz has the wiles to turn the setback into a strength; without Kudus’s individualism, perhaps he will more readily be able to forge a more compact, cohesive, conservative unit. At least the Black Stars don’t have things quite as bad as Spurs.

These two fallen giants begin again; old wounds, new coaches, both seeking redemption, one in the shadow of disaster, the other with disaster looming large before them.

Both have talent enough to recover, although both will recognise that when you lose the player who makes the impossible feel possible, then salvation risks slipping out of reach.

UCL: Bayern beat Madrid in seven-goal thriller to set up PSG semi-final https://www.adomonline.com/ucl-bayern-beat-madrid-in-seven-goal-thriller-to-set-up-psg-semi-final/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 21:44:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651893 Bayern Munich set up a Champions League semi-final date with holders Paris St-Germain after they came out on top of a seven-goal thriller against Real Madrid.

Five goals were scored in a blistering, breathless first half of a quarter-final second-leg cracker, before the game switched to a tactical battle after the break with both sides slowing down the tempo.

It looked like extra time would be needed to settle the outcome, but Real Madrid substitute Eduardo Camavinga was shown a second yellow card for time-wasting four minutes from time following a foul by the French midfielder on Harry Kane.

With a minute left, Luis Diaz delivered a decisive blow with his 24th goal of the season.

The former Liverpool forward played a one-two with Jamal Musiala before sending a curling strike into the top corner via a slight deflection.

After losing the first leg 2-1, Real led three times at the Allianz Arena with Arda Guler scoring twice, but Kane netted his 50th goal of the campaign as Bayern responded each time.

They ensured there was to be no comeback from the 15-time European champions when Michael Olise curled in a fourth in added time to seal a 4-3 win on the night and 6-4 success on aggregate.

Arsenal reach Champions League semi-finals with Sporting draw https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-reach-champions-league-semi-finals-with-sporting-draw/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 21:40:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651933 Arsenal reached the Champions League semi-finals after fighting out a cagey goalless draw with Sporting at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners came into the game with a 1-0 lead from the first leg thanks to Kai Havertz’s late goal in Portugal last week and that strike was enough to see Mikel Arteta’s team take their place in the last four of the competition.

Arsenal started the game in an extremely positive manner but despite the Gunners having more of the ball, it was visitors Sporting who came closest to scoring in the first half.

Francisco Trincao, Pedro Goncalves and a loose pass from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya gave Sporting opportunities before Geny Catamo hit the post with a volley after Maxi Araujo found him with a cross inside the area.

The home crowd inside the stadium produced a nervy atmosphere as the game went on with the Gunners defending a slender lead and following their defeat to Bournemouth in the Premier League last weekend.

Araujo had Sporting’s best chance in the second period when he shot wide from inside the area while substitute Leandro Trossard hit the post with a header from a corner late on for Arsenal.

The victory over two legs means that Arsenal have reached successive semi-finals in the competition for the first time in their history and will take on Atletico Madrid for a place in the final.

Sports journalists urged to be vigilant as human trafficking in sports rises https://www.adomonline.com/sports-journalists-urged-to-be-vigilant-as-human-trafficking-in-sports-rises/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 19:12:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651920 Sports journalists have been cautioned to be extra vigilant as cases of human trafficking within the sports sector continue to increase.

The warning was given by the Director of the Human Trafficking Secretariat at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Abena Annobea Asare, at a media training held on April 15, 2026, at the IOM Head Office, 9 Volta Street, Airport Residential Area, Accra.

Speaking at the event, Madam Asare explained that many young athletes are lured with promises of securing professional contracts abroad, only to end up being exploited.

She noted that victims are often subjected to harsh conditions, including forced labour and, in some cases, sexual exploitation.

According to her, human trafficking does not only occur across borders but can also happen within the country, making it a serious and widespread concern.

Madam Asare further indicated that traffickers take advantage of people’s trust and desire for better opportunities, especially among the youth.

She therefore urged journalists to be mindful of the kind of advertisements and opportunities they promote, stressing that unverified information could expose individuals to danger.

“Media practitioners must be careful not to serve as a link between traffickers and unsuspecting victims,” she cautioned.

Participants were also educated on emerging tactics used by traffickers, including the use of digital platforms and online scams to recruit victims.

The training forms part of ongoing efforts to equip media professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to help tackle human trafficking in sports in Ghana.

Boston to charge fans $95 for bus to Gillette Stadium during the World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/boston-to-charge-fans-95-for-bus-to-gillette-stadium-during-the-world-cup/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 17:18:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651889 Boston’s World Cup host committee has announced it will be providing a bus service to and from Gillette Stadium during the World Cup — for which they will charge passengers $95 per seat.

Earlier this month, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) confirmed it intended to quadruple its usual prices for a round-trip train ticket from the center of Boston to Gillette Stadium during the 2026 World Cup. This hiked a return rail ticket from $20 for NFL games involving the New England Patriots, up to $80 for the 27-mile journey during the World Cup.

Now, Boston’s host committee has rolled out a bus service to take fans to the stadium in Foxboro, for an even higher price of $95. As with the train service, there will be no concessionary prices for children, adults over 60 or for passengers with accessibility needs. The Athletic reported last week that the price may be as high as $90, but the final announced price on Tuesday morning came in even higher at $95 (£70).

The service, known as the Boston Stadium Express, will be operated in partnership with Yankee Line, a Massachusetts-based motorcoach company, and says it will aim to serve 10,000 fans per game.

A new release said the bus service will have over 20 strategically located pickup points across Greater Boston and the surrounding region, including the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence and Boston Logan International. The committee is also collaborating with over 100 hotel properties across the region to provide close-by pick-up and drop-off locations. The buses will provide service from three hours before a game, with the return service leaving the stadium around 30 minutes after the final whistle.

Tickets must be purchased in advance and require a valid, same-day World Cup match ticket in order to board. The news release warned locals and visitors to “expect road closures, turn restrictions, and traffic shifts around downtown Boston and Boston Stadium during the Tournament” (Gillette Stadium will be known as Boston Stadium during the World Cup).

Sources close to the Boston host committee, speaking anonymously as they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, argued that the operational services of the transportation and logistics of the World Cup bring costs which it must seek to recover through its ticket pricing.

Sources also pointed out that that bus services for large-scale events such as the Taylor Swift Eras Tour at Gillette Stadium were priced at around $75 per seat — they say the World Cup pricing needs to be higher due to the larger amount of co-ordination and pick-up/drop-off options provided.

The host cities are attempting to claw back revenue to offset the vast expenses they have taken on for the World Cup. FIFA, whose president Gianni Infantino has forecast $11billion in revenue from this tournament, takes all income from ticketing, broadcast deals, in-stadium sponsorship and even official parking fees during the competition.

At the same time, cities have taken on overall responsibility for costs, including “safety, security and protection”. This extends to public areas, FIFA fan fest locations, airports, other transport hubs and vehicles used in competition. It also includes providing police escorts for teams, referees and FIFA president Gianni Infantino and his delegation. The host city is also expected to provide medical services and fire protection around matches free of charge.

In return, FIFA has claimed the U.S. will see money pour into its states and cities via tourism and excitement, citing $30billion in economic impact, but several city executives, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, are now doubtful that they will meet these expectations.

The bus and train services in Boston have a relatively captive market for the World Cup. The press release says there will be no free or general parking like there would ordinarily be at Gillette Stadium, while the breadth of FIFA’s stadium perimeter on matchdays also means tailgating, a staple of U.S. sports events, will not be allowed.

Official FIFA parking spaces for the matches at Gillette Stadium are $175 for cars (including accessibility parking) during the group stage, rising to $220 for the round of 32 game and $270 for the quarter-final game. For oversized vehicles, it is $600 in the groups, $780 in the round of 32 and $980 in the quarter-final.

Gillette Stadium, home to the NFL’s New England Patriots and MLS team New England Revolution, is owned by the Kraft Group, headed up by multi-billionaire Robert Kraft. The 65,000-seater venue is scheduled to hold seven matches during the World Cup, including a round-of-32 game and a quarter-final.

The group-stage games include two Scotland matches, against Haiti and Morocco, England’s game against Ghana and a fixture between Norway and France.

For soccer fans attending the World Cup, however, this is yet another cost for supporters, compounding the highly expensive World Cup tickets and hotels this summer.

Liverpool fear lengthy lay-off for Ekitike https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-fear-lengthy-lay-off-for-ekitike/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 17:14:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651885 Hugo Ekitike is expected to miss the World Cup after suffering a suspected Achilles injury during Liverpool’s Champions League defeat by Paris St-Germain on Tuesday.

The France forward left the pitch at Anfield on a stretcher, and Liverpool fear he faces a long absence, and that he may miss the start of next season.

On Wednesday, the 23-year-old went for scans, which are expected to confirm the extent of the damage.

Ekitike joined Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt last July and has been one of their standout performers this season, with 17 goals and six assists in all competitions.

Speaking post-match about Ekitike, head coach Arne Slot said: “I think we could all see that it didn’t look well and didn’t look good. Let’s wait and see what it will be. But we could all see it didn’t look good.

“In the second half, he went home so I haven’t seen him yet. Losing a game is already very hard, especially in the way we lost it, but again – as it seems to be – losing a player is something we’ve had so many times this season.

“It’s especially very hard for him because you never want to be injured, especially not at this moment of time in the season.”

In January, Ekitike became just the second player after Kenny Dalglish to score in five different competitions during their debut campaign with Liverpool.

He made his France debut in September and was set to be part of Didier Deschamps’ squad for this summer’s World Cup.

Liverpool have suffered a number of setbacks this season, with both Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley out for the rest of the season with injuries.

Alisson Becker and Wataru Endo also remain sidelined, while Alexander Isak returned earlier this month from an ankle injury that he sustained in December.

Refereeing v Atletico ‘a robbery’ – Barca’s Raphinha https://www.adomonline.com/refereeing-v-atletico-a-robbery-barcas-raphinha/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 11:32:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651943 Barcelona’s exit from the Champions League quarter-finals was “a robbery”, their forward Raphinha says.

They had a player sent off in each leg of their 3-2 aggregate defeat by Spanish rivals Atletico Madrid, with their 2-1 win on Tuesday not enough to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first game.

In both cases, a yellow card was upgraded to a red after the referee was instructed to review at a pitchside monitor the possible denial of a goalscoring opportunity.

Pau Cubarsi was dismissed by Istvan Kovacs in the first leg, and fellow Barca defender Eric Garcia was sent off by Clement Turpin in the second.

Kovacs was also criticised by Barca after he and video assistant referee Christian Dingert allowed play to continue when Atletico defender Marc Pubill handled the ball in his own penalty area.

Raphinha missed each game through injury but told reporters after the second leg: “For me, this match was a robbery. Not just this match but the other one as well.

“The refereeing was really bad, the decisions [Turpin] makes are unbelievable.

“I don’t know how many fouls Atletico made but the referee didn’t give them a single yellow card.

“I really want to understand why they’re so afraid that Barcelona will come and win.”

Atletico did not have a player booked in the second leg, while Barca received one yellow card as well as a red.

Pubill was one of three Atletico players booked in the first leg, when he stopped the ball with his hand after goalkeeper Juan Musso had appeared to restart play with a goal-kick.

Barca complained to Uefa over a “grave lack of VAR intervention” but European football’s governing body said on Tuesday that the club’s protest was “inadmissible”.

“It was tough, especially when you realise you have to work three times as hard to win the match,” added Raphinha, 29.

“I think this tie was quite misleading, in my view. I think everyone can make mistakes; everyone is human.

“But when the mistakes keep repeating themselves in exactly the same way, I think that’s something we need to pay attention to.”

When asked to respond to his comments, Uefa said that its disciplinary body will assess reports from Tuesday’s game before deciding on any next steps, including a possible charge for the former Leeds player.

Atletico keeper Musso said: “You can’t say this match was stolen from them; that’s ridiculous.

“They acted as if they should have had three penalties and we should have had four sendings-off. We won on the pitch, 2–0 away, and when you’re the last man back, you get a red card.”

Maguire gets extra ban and will miss Chelsea trip https://www.adomonline.com/maguire-gets-extra-ban-and-will-miss-chelsea-trip/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 11:29:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651940 Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will miss Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea after receiving an additional one-match ban following his red card at Bournemouth last month.

The England defender, 33, was sent off and conceded a penalty in the 78th minute of the 2-2 draw at Vitality Stadium for pulling down Evanilson in the box.

He was later charged with improper conduct by the Football Association for something he said to fourth official Matt Donohue as he made his way off the pitch.

In addition to a one-match suspension Maguire has also been fined £30,000 by the FA who said in a statement he “acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal”.

In the full written reasons Donohue said that “Maguire, as he was leaving the field of play, approached me and shouted ‘You’re a joke. You’re all a ******* joke'”.

Maguire denied in his written submission that he directed the words towards Donohue or any of the other match officials present.

“As I left the field of play following my dismissal I said something along the lines of ‘it is a ******** joke’,” Maguire said.

“I am certain that I did not call the fourth official or any match official, a joke or use any other form of insult.”

Maguire, however, acknowledged in his evidence that acting as he did was inappropriate and he apologised for saying what he did.

The regulatory commission considered an additional two-match suspension but “taking mitigating factors into account” – including Maguire accepting the charge – felt one match was appropriate.

United will also be without centre-back Lisandro Martinez at Stamford Bridge after he was dismissed for violent conduct for pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair in Monday’s 2-1 defeat by Leeds, which Maguire missed through suspension.

Michael Carrick said it was “one of the worst” decisions he has seen and the United boss suggested the club will appeal against the Argentine’s red card.

Matthijs de Ligt is also set to miss out against Chelsea as he deals with a long-term back problem.

It leaves Carrick with 19-year-old Ayden Heaven and 20-year-old Leny Yoro as his only recognised central defenders.

United are third in the Premier League, level on points with fourth-placed Aston Villa and three points above Liverpool in fifth with six games left.

A win for Chelsea on Saturday would close the gap between themselves and United to four points and throw the Red Devils’ hopes of Champions League qualification into doubt.

Asante Kotoko apologises to fans amid coaching uncertainty and poor run of results https://www.adomonline.com/asante-kotoko-apologises-to-fans-amid-coaching-uncertainty-and-poor-run-of-results/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 07:29:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651537 The board and management of Asante Kotoko have issued an apology to supporters following growing concerns over the club’s recent performances and the absence of a substantive head coach.

In an official statement signed by Communications Director Sarfo Duku (Esq.), the club acknowledged the frustration of fans, admitting that recent results have fallen short of expectations and do not reflect the standards associated with the Porcupine Warriors.

“The board and management acknowledge the concerns raised by our supporters regarding the absence of a substantive head coach and the team’s recent poor results,” the statement read, adding that they fully understand the expectations placed on the club.

The statement further confirmed that efforts are underway to appoint a permanent head coach whose philosophy aligns with the club’s long-term ambitions. Management appealed for patience as they work to identify the right candidate to lead the team forward.

Kotoko also apologised for the disappointing performances in recent matches, assuring supporters that decisive steps are being taken to restore the club to its traditional competitive level.

“The future of this club remains our top priority, and we are committed to making the right choices moving forward,” the statement added, while urging continued loyalty and support for the remainder of the season.

The announcement comes at a challenging period for the Kumasi-based giants, who have struggled for consistency in the ongoing Ghana Premier League campaign.

Following their 4-0 defeat to Medeama SC last Sunday, Asante Kotoko will now turn their attention to their Matchday 30 clash against Hohoe United before travelling to face Dreams FC in Matchday 31.

Carlos Queiroz urged to expand Black Stars player pool ahead of 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/carlos-queiroz-urged-to-expand-black-stars-player-pool-ahead-of-2026-world-cup/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 07:07:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651533 Chairman of Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has called on new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz to widen his player selection pool as he begins preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz, the experienced Portuguese tactician, was recently appointed on a short-term deal as Ghana’s head coach, replacing Otto Addo. The former Real Madrid, Iran and Egypt boss is expected to be in charge for an initial four-month period, with an option for extension.

While welcoming the appointment, Norgbey urged the 73-year-old to consider Ghanaian players abroad who could strengthen the national team.

He stressed that selection should not be limited to the current squad, but should also include players performing outside the country who are eligible and willing to represent Ghana.

“He [Carlos Queiroz] should also cast his net wider to embrace Ghanaian nationals who are plying their trade elsewhere, who are willing and capable to play for the national team,” Norgbey said.

“He shouldn’t limit himself to the team, the players that have been handed over to him, but he should look elsewhere and see which player will fit into the team and fit into his philosophy,” the Member of Parliament for Ashaiman added.

Queiroz is expected to officially begin work with the squad next month, with Ghana lined up for an international friendly against Mexico, followed by a final preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

The Black Stars will feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the fifth time, having been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Ghana will be seeking a stronger showing after group-stage exits in both the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.

Carlos Queiroz will improve Black Stars – Ernest Henry Norgbey https://www.adomonline.com/carlos-queiroz-will-improve-black-stars-ernest-henry-norgbey/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 07:03:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651509 Chairman of Ghana’s Parliamentary Sports Committee, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has expressed strong support for the appointment of experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars.

The 73-year-old replaces Otto Addo on a short-term contract as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He is expected in the country shortly for his official unveiling.

Speaking to Citi Sports, Norgbey said Queiroz’s vast international experience makes him a valuable addition to the national team setup.

“He comes to the table with a wealth of experience, and I think his tactical discipline will propel the team. I’m sure even the players will also have the kind of respect for him because this is a coach with an international rating.”

He also commended the Ghana Football Association for what he described as a positive and timely decision in appointing the former Manchester United assistant coach.

“For once, the GFA has taken a decision that will be to the benefit of the Black Stars, and I’m happy for the choice that they have made,” Norgbey added.

Queiroz is expected to officially begin work with the squad next month, starting with an international friendly against Mexico, followed by a final warm-up fixture against Wales on June 2.

Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.

After early exits in both the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, Queiroz has been tasked with steering the Black Stars to a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.

Kelvin Obeng shines as Medeama thrash Kotoko – Ibrahim Tanko hails Striker https://www.adomonline.com/kelvin-obeng-shines-as-medeama-thrash-kotoko-ibrahim-tanko-hails-striker/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 06:38:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651502 Head coach of Medeama SC, Ibrahim Tanko, has praised striker Kelvin Obeng for his growing influence in the Ghana Premier League following the club’s emphatic victory over Asante Kotoko.

The 26-year-old forward was on target as the Yellow and Mauve cruised to a 4-0 win at the TNA Park on Matchday 29, a result that further strengthened their title ambitions.

Obeng, who recently returned from a knee injury after joining from Aduana Stars, played a key role in the dominant performance, with Tanko highlighting the added dimension he brings to the team’s attack.

Speaking after the match, the Medeama coach stressed the importance of having a traditional centre-forward in his setup.

“You need a type of striker who can keep the ball for you, who is good in the air, and you could see that he is a typical striker in the box, and that was the type of striker we were missing in the first round. I think adding him has given us a lot of options,” Tanko said.

The comprehensive win, combined with Bibiani Gold Stars defeat to Aduana Stars, propelled Medeama to the top of the league table with a two-point lead.

Attention now shifts to the MTN FA Cup, where Medeama face Dreams FC in the semi-finals on April 18, 2026, as they continue their push for silverware this season.

Aduana FC CEO calls for improved security after player’s death https://www.adomonline.com/aduana-fc-ceo-calls-for-improved-security-after-players-death/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 06:33:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651490 Chief Executive Officer of Aduana FC, Collins Atta Poku, has called for urgent improvements in security arrangements for club travels following the tragic death of forward Dominic Frimpong.

The 20-year-old, who was on loan at Berekum Chelsea, was killed after armed robbers attacked the team bus while they were returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex last Sunday night.

Speaking to 3Sports, Atta Poku expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing the loss as both painful and avoidable. He stressed the need for increased security presence, particularly police escorts, for teams travelling to and from league matches.

“To know someone that closely, and work with someone closely like that, it is painful… it’s very painful,” he said.

“It’s necessary that we get police on our buses when we are going to these games. We know the numbers are a little stretched, but we have to do something about it at some point to make sure that we have enough security on the bus when we are travelling, especially at night,” he added.

He further highlighted the logistical and financial challenges clubs face, noting that limited resources often prevent teams from staying overnight after matches, forcing them to embark on risky late-night journeys.

“A lot of planning goes into it; sometimes it’s difficult, and we don’t have the resources to sleep over in such situations,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for those responsible for the attack.

GFA confirms arrival of Carlos Queiroz for Black Stars unveiling https://www.adomonline.com/gfa-confirms-arrival-of-carlos-queiroz-for-black-stars-unveiling/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 06:29:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651472 The Ghana Football Association has confirmed that newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected in the country in the coming days for his official unveiling.

According to the GFA’s Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, arrangements are underway for the veteran tactician to formally present his vision for the senior national team following his recent appointment.

Queiroz, who has previously managed Egypt, Colombia and Oman, has been handed a short-term contract to lead Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The 73-year-old takes over from Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties in March after back-to-back friendly defeats to Austria and Germany.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Asante Twum disclosed that the unveiling will provide an opportunity for the former Real Madrid assistant to outline his ambitions.

“In the next few days, Carlos Queiroz will arrive in Ghana to be properly unveiled, where he will personally tell us his plans, expectations and ambitions for the team,” he said.

“We have only made his statement to us public, but he will be unveiled and made available to the press to answer questions, and then we will make progress from there,” Asante Twum added.

The Portuguese coach is expected to begin working directly with the squad next month, starting with an international friendly against Mexico. Preparations will then continue with a final test against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, preparing for their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in Group L. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After successive group-stage exits in Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022, Queiroz faces the challenge of restoring belief and guiding the team to a more competitive showing on football’s biggest stage.

GFA explains why Carlos Queiroz was chosen as Black Stars head coach https://www.adomonline.com/gfa-explains-why-carlos-queiroz-was-chosen-as-black-stars-head-coach/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 05:54:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651253 The Ghana Football Association has clarified the reasoning behind the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, describing the veteran tactician as the standout candidate among several high-profile contenders.

The 72-year-old Portuguese manager has been handed a short-term contract to lead Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, replacing Otto Addo, who was dismissed following a string of inconsistent performances despite securing qualification for the tournament.

Several notable names, including Pitso Mosimane, Kwesi Appiah, and Paulo Bento, were reportedly considered before the GFA settled on Queiroz.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum revealed that Queiroz’s detailed technical assessment of the national team played a decisive role in his appointment.

According to Asante Twum, the former Real Madrid coach demonstrated deep insight into the Black Stars’ recent struggles, including their failed Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign, while also showing a clear understanding of the squad’s strengths and player profiles.

“Carlos Queiroz provided a detailed analysis of his observations of the Black Stars, from their AFCON qualification failure to World Cup qualification,” he said.

He added that Queiroz also presented a comprehensive roadmap on how he intends to guide the team beyond the group stage at the World Cup.

The experienced coach is expected to take charge of the team next month when Ghana faces Mexico in an international friendly, before wrapping up preparations with a final pre-tournament clash against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, gearing up for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L of the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, followed by matches against England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Having suffered group-stage exits in their last two appearances in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz will be tasked with guiding Ghana to a stronger showing on the global stage.

Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that the Portuguese tactician has been given a short-term mandate to lead Ghana through the global tournament, with a decision on his long-term future to be made afterward.

Queiroz, 72, replaces Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties following consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany in pre-World Cup friendlies.

“Carlos Queiroz will lead the Black Stars until the end of the World Cup. After that, the FA will review how things turn out and decide whether to keep him or part ways,” he told Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show.

He also revealed that the former Egypt and Iran coach has already begun work behind the scenes and is expected to arrive in Ghana in the coming days.

“Carlos Queiroz has already begun work on the Black Stars and is expected in Ghana in the coming days,” Asante Twum added.

Queiroz is set to meet his squad next month ahead of an international friendly against Mexico, before rounding off preparations with a final warm-up game against Wales on June 2.

Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the World Cup and has been drawn in Group L of the tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Having suffered group-stage exits in both the 2014 tournament in Brazil and the 2022 edition in Qatar, Queiroz faces the immediate challenge of guiding Ghana to a stronger performance on football’s biggest stage.

Antoine Semenyo suffers renewed online racial abuse after Chelsea victory https://www.adomonline.com/antoine-semenyo-suffers-renewed-online-racial-abuse-after-chelsea-victory/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 05:53:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651285 Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo has once again been subjected to racial abuse on social media, months after a similar incident earlier in the 2025/26 English Premier League season.

The latest episode came after Manchester City’s 3-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last Sunday.

Semenyo, who completed the full 90 minutes, later shared a post on Instagram celebrating the victory but was met with a racially abusive comment.

Responding to the abuse, he wrote: “It’s started again…”, referencing a previous incident in December 2025 during his spell at AFC Bournemouth, when he was targeted following a 4-2 defeat to Liverpool.

The incident has reignited concerns about the persistent problem of online racism in football, despite ongoing anti-discrimination campaigns across the sport.

The 26-year-old, who joined Manchester City in January 2026, has made a strong impact at the Etihad, scoring 15 league goals so far this season and helping the club to Carabao Cup success.

Retrial over death of Argentina legend Maradona begins https://www.adomonline.com/retrial-over-death-of-argentina-legend-maradona-begins/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 05:47:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651467 A retrial into the death of the football legend Diego Maradona began on Tuesday, a year after the first case collapsed in a mistrial.

Seven members of his medical team are charged with negligent homicide after he died from a heart attack, aged 60.

They have denied the allegations. If convicted, they face between eight and 25 years in prison.

The first trial collapsed last May when one of its three judges resigned after allegedly allowing unauthorised filming in court for a documentary.

Maradona died in 2020 at his home in Tigre, Buenos Aires province, while he was recuperating from surgery to remove a brain blood clot.

Investigators classified the case as culpable homicide – a crime similar to involuntary manslaughter – because they said the accused were aware of the seriousness of Maradona’s health condition but did not take the necessary measures to save him.

The heart failure caused him to suffer acute pulmonary oedema, when fluid builds up in the lungs, the preliminary autopsy confirmed.

A panel of medical experts, asked by prosecutors to investigate Maradona’s medical team, said the treatment he received at his home was “deficient and reckless”.

It concluded that the footballer “would have had a better chance of survival” with adequate treatment in an appropriate medical facility.

The seven people on trial include his main medical adviser, Leopoldo Luque, and his psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov. His former nurse, Dahiana Gisela Madrid, will stand trial separately.

The Argentinian is remembered as one of the game’s most gifted players

Around 100 people are set to testify in front of a new set of judges at a court in San Isidro, including Maradona’s daughters. The trial is expected to last until July.

When the footballer died on 25 November 2020, then President of Argentina Alberto Fernandez declared three days of national mourning.

“Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives,” he said.

Maradona started his career with Argentinos Juniors. He went on to represent Argentina in four World Cups, scoring 34 goals, including the infamous “Hand of God” goal against England in 1986.

During the second half of his career, he struggled with cocaine addiction. He was banned for 15 months after testing positive for the drug in 1991.

He retired from professional football in 1997, on his 37th birthday, during his second stint at Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

Maradona was appointed head coach of the national team in 2008 and left after the 2010 World Cup, where his side were beaten by Germany in the quarter-finals.

He subsequently managed teams in the United Arab Emirates and Mexico and was in charge of Argentinian club Gimnasia y Esgrima at the time of his death.

Slot fears Ekitike injury is ‘really bad’ https://www.adomonline.com/slot-fears-ekitike-injury-is-really-bad/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 05:44:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651464 Liverpool boss Arne Slot says Hugo Ekitike’s injury “looks really bad” after the France striker was taken off on a stretcher during Tuesday’s Champions League loss to Paris St-Germain.

Ekitike went down off the ball 30 minutes into the quarter-final second leg, which the Reds lost 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.

He was seen holding his ankle and was visibly in discomfort before being taken off the pitch.

“Hugo looks really bad but it is difficult to say how bad,” Slot said after the game.

“Let’s see. It doesn’t look good, that is clear. I didn’t see him at half-time and after the game he was already home. I have not spoken to him yet.”

Ekitike is playing his first season at Liverpool after signing last summer from Eintracht Frankfurt and has scored 17 goals in 45 games in all competitions.

A lengthy period of time out for the Frenchman will be a real blow to his hopes of being part of the France squad at this summer’s World Cup in North America.

Ekitike’s club and international team-mate Ibrahima Konate said this moment will be “very hard” for him.

“I think it is bad,” he told Amazon Prime.

“I don’t know, I have heard many things, I have no word to talk about that because with the World Cup coming it is very, very hard for him and I send him my prayers.”

Ekitike started alongside Alexander Isak in attack, with the latter making his return to the starting XI for the first time since early December after recovering from a broken leg.

Florian Wirtz also started, with Slot lamenting how often his three big signings from last summer have been able to play together this season.

He said: “For 88 minutes until tonight we have played with Florian, Alex and Hugo, we added about 27 to that, and I would be surprised if we add more minutes to that this season.

“The good thing is Alex is back.”

‘No fear, pure fire’ – Arteta defiant on pivotal week https://www.adomonline.com/no-fear-pure-fire-arteta-defiant-on-pivotal-week/ Wed, 15 Apr 2026 05:39:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651460 Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta wants his side to play with “pure fire” as they prepare for one of their biggest weeks in years.

The Gunners host Sporting on Wednesday, having won 1-0 in Lisbon last week, for a place in a Champions League semi-final.

That was the only victory for the Premier League leaders in their past four games, having lost in all three domestic competitions.

On Sunday they visit Manchester City, their closest challengers in the title race.

Having last won a trophy in 2020 with the FA Cup during Arteta’s first season in charge and not been league champions for 22 years, the pressure has intensified on Arsenal to deliver success the club and fans have craved.

In the pre-match news conference before the second leg against Sporting, Arteta was asked if he had a message for the players and supporters.

“No fear, pure fire. That’s it,” he said.

“Pure fire, that’s what I want to see from the players, the people, myself. The opportunity is unbelievable.

“Let’s confront it, let’s go for it and put everything into it.”

Arteta continued that theme when asked about any nerves.

“Fire. I’m on fire. That’s it. Nothing else,” he added. “I’m driven so much. I have done so much to be in this position. I know how this club was. This is beauty.

“I see beauty and opportunity. I want to get it done for all the people on the journey with us. That’s what has driven me every day. Zero fear.”

In their worrying recent run, the Gunners were beaten by Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, Championship side Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final, and at home by Bournemouth in the league on Saturday.

From hope of an unprecedented Quadruple, the defeats have taken their trophy chances down from four to two, while their lead at the top of the table has been reduced to six points, with Pep Guardiola’s side also having a game in hand.

Gunners forward Eberechi Eze said: “The boss speaks well, he is passionate, and you can see the fire he has in his eyes and mind, and that has been pushed throughout the whole club.

“Regardless of what people are saying outside, it is about us and what we do, and that is all that matters.”

Absent Rice adds to injury concerns

Midfielder Declan Rice was one of five players who missed the club’s open training session on Tuesday.

The England international has played the full 90 minutes in his club’s last two games – against Sporting and Bournemouth.

“We have to wait until tomorrow morning to see how a few of the boys are, and then make the right decision with them,” said Arteta.

“He has played a lot of games, and that is part of the issue.

“He is going to try to do everything he possibly can to be with us tomorrow evening.”

Captain Martin Odegaard, winger Bukayo Saka and defenders Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori also missed the training session.

The quartet were all absent for Saturday’s defeat by the Cherries.

While Arteta said one of Saka or Timber could feature against Sporting, he revealed the England forward, 24, has been troubled by an “Achilles issue”.

He added: “No [setback], there is progression. Hopefully, it’s a matter of days and not weeks.”

UCL: Dembele at the double as PSG knock Liverpool out again https://www.adomonline.com/ucl-dembele-at-the-double-as-psg-knock-liverpool-out-again/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 22:20:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651456 Ousmane Dembele scored twice as Paris St-Germain beat Liverpool to book their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League, where either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid await Luis Enrique’s side.

PSG came into the second leg with a two-goal advantage but were made to work at a raucous Anfield until Dembele scored in the 72nd minute with a wonderful left-footed finish. In added time, the Ballon d’Or winner added a second.

Buoyed by the crowd, Liverpool huffed and puffed in their quest to pull off another memorable European comeback, but Arne Slot’s side failed to score against the holders of the Champions League and, for the second season in a row, they have been knocked out by PSG.

After their feeble display in Paris last week, where they lost 2-0, Liverpool were much better against the French side at Anfield and asked questions, but ultimately it wasn’t enough.

Slot opted to give Alexander Isak his first start since December and left Mohamed Salah on the bench again, but Salah was introduced on the half-hour mark after Hugo Ekitike was forced off with what looked like a worrying injury.

It was the visitors who threatened more in the first half, with Giorgi Mamardashvili making saves to deny Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Dembele.

Dembele wasted a glorious opportunity when he blazed over with only the keeper to beat. At the other end, Marquinhos made a stunning challenge to deny Liverpool a goal.

Slot made a double substitution at the break, taking off Isak for Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong for Joe Gomez, and Liverpool started the second half on the front foot but failed to make it count.

In the 65th minute, they were awarded a penalty when Alexis Mac Allister fell down after a challenge by Willian Pacho, but after the video assistant referee (VAR) intervened, the referee Maurizio Mariani overturned the decision.

Seven minutes later, Kvaratskhelia found Dembele, who beat Mamardashvili with pace and power from 20 yards out to put the tie to bed.

And as Anfield emptied out, Dembele tapped in from close range after he was teed up by Bradley Barcola.

Defeat for Liverpool means they will end the season without silverware and it remains to be seen whether they will qualify for Champions League football next season.

UCL: Atleti survive Barcelona fightback to reach semis https://www.adomonline.com/ucl-atleti-survive-barcelona-fightback-to-reach-semis/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 22:17:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651453 Atletico Madrid survived a valiant Barcelona fightback to progress to the Champions League semi-finals 3-2 on aggregate despite losing a thrilling quarter-final second leg 2-1 in Madrid.

With Barca trailing 2-0 from the first leg, Lamine Yamal halved the aggregate deficit with just five minutes on the clock when he slid the ball under Atleti goalkeeper Juan Musso following a loose touch from former Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet.

Nineteen minutes later the tie was level – Ferran Torres latched onto a Dani Olmo pass and drilled a fine left-footed strike into the top corner.

A raucous home crowd was silenced for seven minutes, until Marcos Llorente broke down the right flank and found Ademola Lookman in the box to restore Atleti’s aggregate lead.

Barca should have gone 3-0 up on the night just five minutes earlier, but Musso spread himself to block a diving header from an unmarked Fermin Lopez.

Torres thought he had scored Barca’s third goal 10 minutes into the second half when he met a deflection in the box with a cushioned volley into the top corner, but after a VAR check his effort was ruled out for offside.

The visitors continued to push but, as happened in the first leg last week, were reduced to 10 men when Eric Garcia tripped Atleti striker Alexander Sorloth as he raced onto a through ball.

Barcelona threw everyone forward and went close through headers from Robert Lewandowski and Ronald Araujo, but were unable to produce what would have been one of the most memorable comebacks in Champions League history.

Atleti will face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals as they look to reach the final for the first time since 2016.

Competent team led Carlos Queiroz’s appointment – Henry Asante Twum https://www.adomonline.com/competent-team-led-carlos-queirozs-appointment-henry-asante-twum/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 13:14:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651273 The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum, says a highly qualified team oversaw the process that led to the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars.

Queiroz, 72, has been handed a short-term contract to lead Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, replacing Otto Addo following his dismissal after the March international break, where the Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Asante Twum stressed that the decision-making process was deliberately structured and inclusive.

“We decided to filter out the noise, and the search for the new coach was led by a competent team through a broad engagement process,” he said.

He explained that the FA deliberately distanced itself from external pressure, insisting the selection was handled through wide consultation involving key football stakeholders.

According to him, the process brought together members of the GFA, the technical directorate, and former association officials to arrive at Queiroz’s appointment, describing it as a collective decision rather than a unilateral move by the FA.

“A very competent team, including members of the GFA, the technical directorate, and former FA officials in opposition, worked together on the appointment of Carlos Queiroz.”

“It was not solely an FA decision but the result of a broad consultation process,” Asante Twum added.

Queiroz is expected to officially begin work next month, with his first assignment coming in a pre-World Cup friendly against Mexico, followed by another warm-up fixture against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, making its fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in Group L of the 2026 tournament, which will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The Portuguese coach will be tasked with improving Ghana’s fortunes on the global stage after group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022.

George Afriyie slams GFA over timing of Carlos Queiroz’s announcement after tragic death of Dominic Frimpong https://www.adomonline.com/george-afriyie-slams-gfa-over-timing-of-carlos-queirozs-announcement-after-tragic-death-of-dominic-frimpong/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 13:08:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651260 Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, has criticised the timing of the announcement of the Black Stars’ new head coach, describing it as poorly judged following the death of Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong.

Frimpong died after sustaining gunshot wounds during a violent armed robbery attack on the team’s bus while returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996 on Sunday, April 12.

However, the GFA on Monday, April 13, announced Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars on a short-term deal, replacing Otto Addo.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Afriyie expressed disappointment in the GFA Executive Council, accusing it of lacking empathy and failing to adequately honour the late player.

He also extended his criticism to club administrators, arguing that more could have been done to observe a day of mourning in Frimpong’s memory.

“The GFA does not have empathy and sympathy. The entire Executive Council should bow their heads in shame for not setting aside even a single day to mourn Dominic Frimpong, and I also blame the club owners,” he stated.

According to him, football authorities could have delayed the announcement of the new Black Stars coach, insisting that the timing sent the wrong message.

“The best we could do for this young man who lost his life was just to devote yesterday to mourn. We can talk about the Black Stars coach on any day; couldn’t we have used just one day?” he added.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for the attackers as investigations continue.

Aduana FC CEO visits family of late Dominic Frimpong, presents player’s personal bag https://www.adomonline.com/aduana-fc-ceo-visits-family-of-late-dominic-frimpong-presents-players-personal-bag/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 12:43:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651234 The Chief Executive Officer of Aduana FC, Collins Atta Poku, has paid a solemn visit to the family of the late Dominic Frimpong, presenting the player’s personal bag in an emotional moment that highlighted the depth of the club’s loss.

Frimpong, a 20-year-old striker on loan to Berekum Chelsea, tragically died following an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus.

The incident occurred on Sunday, April 12, along the Bibiani–Goaso road as the team returned from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996 in Samreboi.

During the visit to the family home at Assin Dansame, Mr. Atta Poku formally handed over the late player’s bag as a symbol of the club’s final tribute.

Several players and officials sustained injuries during the attack. Frimpong, who suffered gunshot wounds, was rushed to hospital but was later pronounced dead. The young forward had been enjoying regular game time this season with Berekum Chelsea.

Speaking to Adom News through affiliate reporter Fadda Romeo, Mr. Atta Poku said: “This truly confirms that indeed our player is no more. It is a very painful moment for all of us.”

Assistant coach of Berekum Chelsea, Obed Owusu, who helped communicate the tragic news to the family, added: “We came to inform the family about what happened and to stand with them in this difficult time. It is a loss we are all struggling to accept.”

The family head, Nana Gyan Agyabeng I, described their shock upon receiving the news, saying: “We received the news with great shock. It is heartbreaking to lose such a young and promising life under these circumstances.”

The tragedy has drawn widespread condolences from the global football community. Gianni Infantino described the incident as tragic, while Patrice Motsepe also expressed deep sorrow, noting that the African football family stands with Ghana during this difficult time.

The Ghana Football Association also paid tribute, describing Frimpong as a promising talent whose untimely death is a huge loss to Ghana football.

The incident has renewed concerns about security for sports teams travelling across Ghana’s road network.

FIFA and CAF mourn tragic death of Dominic Frimpong https://www.adomonline.com/fifa-and-caf-mourn-tragic-death-of-dominic-frimpong/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 08:47:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651114 FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe have led an outpouring of grief following the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong, who was shot dead during an armed robbery attack on the club’s team bus last Sunday.

The incident, which occurred as the Ghana Premier League side were returning from an away fixture, has left the country’s football community in shock and has renewed debate over the safety of teams travelling for domestic matches.

Frimpong, 20, had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC earlier this year and was beginning to make steady progress in his development before his life was cut short.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Infantino described the news as deeply distressing, expressing sorrow over the circumstances surrounding the player’s death.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Berekum Chelsea Football Club’s Dominic Frimpong following a reported attack on the team while returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture,” the statement read.

The FIFA president extended condolences on behalf of world football, standing in solidarity with the bereaved family and the club.

“On behalf of the global football community and everyone at FIFA, we send our condolences to his family, friends, everyone at Berekum Chelsea FC and all those who knew him,” he added.

CAF president Dr Motsepe also expressed profound grief over the killing, describing the attack as devastating and extending support to those affected.

“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the armed robbery attack on the bus of Berekum Chelsea, returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture, which claimed the life of a 20-year-old winger, Dominic Frimpong.”

He further offered condolences to the Ghana Football Association and Frimpong’s loved ones, adding that CAF stood firmly with the country during the mourning period.

“May God comfort and console his loved ones and the entire Ghanaian football community. CAF is with you during this sad and painful period.”

Meanwhile, authorities have launched investigations into the attack as Ghanaian football continues to mourn the loss of one of its promising young talents.

Otto Addo unaware of sacking before final GFA meeting – Kofi Adams https://www.adomonline.com/otto-addo-unaware-of-sacking-before-final-gfa-meeting-kofi-adams/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 07:09:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651090 Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has disclosed that former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo was unaware his tenure had ended when he entered his final meeting with the Ghana Football Association.

According to the Minister, the 50-year-old coach believed the meeting was focused on tactical reviews following Ghana’s recent international struggles, rather than discussions on terminating his contract.

The Black Stars endured a difficult March international window, suffering consecutive defeats to Austria and Germany in pre-World Cup friendlies.

Speaking on the KSM Show, Adams said the timing of the dismissal on March 31, 2026, came as a surprise to the coach, who had already overseen a challenging spell, including Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

“After the match against Germany, the coach was preparing for that meeting, so he was not preparing for his sack,” he stated.

“He thought that if he was going to be sacked, it should have happened much earlier because he had seen the worst,” the Buem MP added.

Following Addo’s departure, the Ghana Football Association appointed veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz on a short-term contract to lead the Black Stars into the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Queiroz is expected to begin work immediately, focusing on squad assessment, technical restructuring, and tactical preparation ahead of the tournament.

He will first meet the Black Stars squad next month during preparations for a friendly against Mexico, before further fine-tuning the team ahead of a final pre-tournament fixture against Wales on June 2.

Ghana national football team, making their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, with their campaign beginning on June 17 against Panama.

I was aware of GFA’s decision to sack Otto Addo – Sports Minister https://www.adomonline.com/i-was-aware-of-gfas-decision-to-sack-otto-addo-sports-minister/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 06:53:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651084 Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed that he was fully aware of the Ghana Football Association’s decision to part ways with Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

The Buem MP disclosed that the move followed consultations between the Sports Ministry and the Ghana Football Association, stressing that the decision did not come as a surprise.

Addo’s dismissal comes after a disappointing international window, highlighted by a heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria.

The 50-year-old managed just eight wins in 22 matches during his second stint, leaving Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup under scrutiny, with only 72 days to the tournament.

Speaking on the KSM Show, Adams said the FA kept government officials informed throughout the process, citing concerns over the team’s declining performances.

“I cannot sit here and pretend that I did not know the FA was going to do that (sack Otto Addo), and that it came to me as a surprise. They did inform me that they had done everything,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the GFA has reportedly moved swiftly to appoint veteran Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal.

At 73, Queiroz takes charge at a crucial moment as preparations for the global tournament enter a decisive phase.

He is expected to begin work immediately, focusing on squad assessment, technical team selection, and tactical preparation for the World Cup.

The former Real Madrid and Iran coach is scheduled to meet the Black Stars squad next month during an international friendly against Mexico, before concluding preparations with a match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana national football team, set to make their fifth World Cup appearance, have been drawn in Group L of the tournament hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

They will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

Berekum Chelsea bus had no security escort during fatal armed robbery attack – Club PRO reveals https://www.adomonline.com/berekum-chelsea-bus-had-no-security-escort-during-fatal-armed-robbery-attack-club-pro-reveals/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 06:41:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651061 Public Relations Officer of Berekum Chelsea, Albert Kwabena Diawuo, has disclosed that the club’s team bus had no security escort when it was ambushed by armed robbers on Sunday night.

The Ghana Premier League side came under attack after their Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex 1996 at DUN’s Park.

The incident left six players and officials with minor injuries, while forward Dominic Frimpong tragically lost his life after being shot. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Speaking in an interview with Joy FM on Monday, April 13, Diawuo revealed that travelling without security is a routine practice for the club.

“There was no security on our team bus from Samreboi to Berekum. We normally go to away matches without security. We go there, play our game and come back without any incident. It was just yesterday that we had that robbery attack between Bibiani and Nkoso,” he said.

Recounting the incident, he explained that the team bus was ambushed on their return journey after the match.

“After we lost to Samartex 1996, on our way back, between Bibiani and Nkoso, the driver of our team bus saw gunmen lying in ambush. They started shooting, so the driver decided to reverse the bus. Unfortunately, the robbers rushed towards the bus and continued firing at it,” he added.

He further noted that the team usually does not stay overnight after away fixtures, opting instead to travel immediately after matches.

“Normally, we don’t spend the night after all our away matches,” he stated.

How Champions League could decide £100m Alvarez’s future https://www.adomonline.com/how-champions-league-could-decide-100m-alvarezs-future/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 06:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651221 Julian Alvarez’s phone kept ringing, every day.

It was Rodrigo de Paul, then Antoine Griezmann, then Giuliano Simeone, the Atletico Madrid’s manager’s son.

And behind every call, pulling the strings, was Diego Simeone himself, firing messages into Alvarez’s phone during the Copa America and the Paris Olympics of the summer of 2024.

In the end, the World Cup-winning Argentina striker, who had just clinched the Premier League with Manchester City, had to beg for it to stop.

“Tell your dad to stop calling,” Alvarez finally told Giuliano. He was coming, so could they all back off?

The story shows the first time Alvarez encountered the intensity of Diego Simeone, and also why he chose Atletico Madrid over Paris St-Germain, who were reportedly offering up to £8.7m a season in wages.

‘The Little Spider’

Alvarez grew up in Calchin, a town of 3,000 people in the province of Cordoba, Argentina.

His brother Rafael started calling him ‘La Aranita’ – the Little Spider. When he played on the neighbourhood pitch, 50 metres from his front door, no-one could get the ball off him. He seemed to have too many legs.

Opponents from other villages would show up asking: “Is La Aranita playing today?” The name stuck and his teachers were the only people who ever called him Julian.

Aged 11, he impressed in a trial with Real Madrid, but returned home anyway, a decision he calls one of the most formative of his life.

At 15, a River Plate scout named Juanjo Borrelli needed only one training session to decide that this kid from a tiny Cordoban town had to come to Buenos Aires. Borrelli told him he would start on the bench but he did not stay there for long.

River Plate made Alvarez. In one extraordinary Copa Libertadores performance against Alianza Lima, he scored six goals in a 8-1 win, which announced him to the world.

Playing for one of South America’s giants, where winning every game is an obligation, forged the competitive instinct that now defines him. “Once you’re at River,” he said, “you can never lose a game without it hurting you.”

From River Plate, he went to Manchester City in January 2022. There he won the Champions League in his debut season, becoming part of Pep Guardiola’s machine and thriving within it. He was 23. It was all happening very fast. Then came the calls.

‘The chance to be my best’

What Atletico manager Simeone sold him was a football project that had the striker at the centre of it. Alvarez wanted to feel wanted.

“He told me I could give the club something huge,” he recalls. “That I’d have the space and the opportunity to be my best version.”

The Argentines already at the club helped too – De Paul, Griezmann’s warmth, the Spanish language, a culture that felt closer to home than Paris or Manchester ever could.

In August 2024, Atletico Madrid confirmed the deal – 95m euros (£81.5m), a club record received by City, and a six-year contract. The club announced it with a Spiderman video and Alvarez loved it.

Ask him about the price tag and he almost looks confused by the question.

“It’s more something that gets talked about in the media,” he said. “In the dressing room I’m just one of the group. I like being treated that way.”

His father worked in a cereal factory in Calchin. His mother was a schoolteacher. He grew up knowing that you have to earn respect, or reputation. He is still the same person. It shows on the pitch too – the World Cup winner who sprints back to win the ball, who presses from the front. Simeone rarely singles out individuals, but with Alvarez, he makes exceptions.

Across two seasons in red and white, he has made 102 appearances and scored 47 goals, numbers that tell only part of the story.

His time at Atletico has not been without frustration. In La Liga this season, the numbers have been modest – eight goals in 29 appearances, and just one in 2026.

His strike against Oviedo at the end of February ended a run of 14 league games without a goal, his previous one coming against Sevilla on 1 November. But the Champions League has been a different story, bringing nine goals in 12 appearances this season.

A big game for Alvarez’s future

Last week he delivered one of his most complete European performances yet. In the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona at the Camp Nou, ‘La Arana’ was everywhere.

He provided the assist that drew the foul on Pau Cubarsi and got the Barcelona defender sent off. Then he stepped up and curled in a free-kick of genuine quality. Man of the match.

It is not surprising Barcelona are looking to replace an ageing Robert Lewandowski and an inconsistent Ferran Torres with Alvarez.

He has a 500m euros (£435m) release clause, and Atletico will not sell for less than 100m euros (£87m), a fee Barcelona’s current finances cannot support.

Club president Enrique Cerezo was asked about Alvarez last week and said: “He has a contract with Atletico Madrid.”

Alvarez, characteristically, said almost nothing. “I’m happy here,” he said, but left the door slightly open to the Catalans, when he also said about his future: “I don’t know. You never know.”

The Champions League run may decide everything. If Atletico eliminate Barcelona on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals, the argument for staying writes itself – this is a club that can win things.

If on the other hand Atletico get knocked out, having come to the Metropolitano with a 2-0 advantage, then he might reconsider if he is at the right club.

GFA appoints Carlos Queiroz as new Black Stars coach https://www.adomonline.com/gfa-appoints-carlos-queiroz-as-new-black-stars-coach/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 05:40:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650944 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany. The decision was confirmed by the GFA Executive Council after consultations with key stakeholders, bringing an end to weeks of speculation over the national team’s leadership.

The 73-year-old arrives with an extensive résumé in international football, having coached several national teams and elite clubs, including Real Madrid and Manchester United. His managerial career has also taken him to Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Oman, Japan and Qatar.

Queiroz’s World Cup experience is seen as a major asset for Ghana’s preparations. He previously guided South Africa to qualification for the 2002 tournament, led Portugal to the knockout stages in 2010, and took charge of Iran at both the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

He is expected to begin work immediately, with early priorities including assessing the playing squad, finalising his technical team, and shaping preparations for the tournament.

The new coach will meet the Black Stars squad next month during a friendly against Mexico, before another preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, set for its fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup, will compete in Group L at the 2026 tournament, hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

2026 WC: Fred Pappoe rallies support for newly appointed Black Stars coach, Carlos Queiroz  https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-fred-pappoe-rallies-support-for-newly-appointed-black-stars-coach-carlos-queiroz/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 05:39:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650962 Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Fred Pappoe, has called for support for the newly appointed Black Stars coach, Carlos Queiroz.

The veteran Portugese gaffer has been appointed on a short-term contract ahead of the 2026 World Cup, replacing Otto Addo.

Addo, who was reappointed in March 2024, was shown the exit after back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany during the March international window.

Speaking to Sports Page 2 on Adom FM, Mr Pappoe, a former Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, has called on the nation to stay united and support the former Egypt and Real Madrid head coach.

“We have limited time for the World Cup, and if you look into the list available and you check our pocket, I believe we have to rally behind whoever has been appointed,” he said.

“We were all clamouring for a respected coach, and someone who can transform the team and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) together with the Sports Ministry has come out with their choice, and we have to support him.

“He has been at the World Cup four times, and we don’t have to focus on the negatives as the coach, but rather support him,” Pappoe added.

Queiroz will meet the players next month when the Black Stars regroup for an international friendly against Mexico, followed by another preparatory match against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, preparing for its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L for the 2026 tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After underwhelming outings at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments, Queiroz will be tasked with steering Ghana to a stronger showing on the global stage.

Carlos Queiroz begins Ghana reign with ‘mission, not just a job’ promise ahead of 2026 World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/carlos-queiroz-begins-ghana-reign-with-mission-not-just-a-job-promise-ahead-of-2026-world-cup/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 05:38:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650970 New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has described his appointment as a “mission” rather than a routine managerial role, expressing deep gratitude, humility and determination as he begins his tenure in charge of Ghana’s national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced Portuguese tactician has been handed a short-term deal by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), taking over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed following consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window.

In his first public message to Ghanaian supporters, Queiroz outlined his commitment to restoring pride in the Black Stars, insisting he is ready to dedicate his experience to the service of the team and the nation.

“Football has given me a lifetime of challenges, lessons, and unforgettable journeys all over the world,” he wrote. “I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career. Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul.”

He added that the role carried a responsibility beyond results, stressing unity, discipline and ambition as key pillars of his project.

“This is not just another job — it is a mission,” he said. “And I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in service of the game and the happiness of people.”

Queiroz is expected to meet his squad next month as Ghana step up preparations with international friendlies against Mexico and Wales on June 2.

The Black Stars head into the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before tough encounters with England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

With the nation still searching for a return to consistent World Cup success after disappointing campaigns in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz arrives under pressure to transform promise into performance on football’s biggest stage.

The Ghana Football Association confirmed the appointment, naming the former Egypt boss as successor to Otto Addo, who was dismissed in March after consecutive friendly defeats to Austria and Germany.

Queiroz’s appointment, approved by the GFA Executive Council following consultations with key stakeholders, brings to a close weeks of uncertainty surrounding the team’s technical direction.

The 73-year-old arrives with a wealth of experience at both club and international levels, having previously handled top sides including Real Madrid and Manchester United. On the international stage, he has managed Portugal, Iran, Egypt, Oman, Japan and Qatar.

His World Cup pedigree remains one of his strongest credentials. Queiroz guided Portugal to the Round of 16 at the 2010 tournament, led Iran in the 2014 and 2018 editions, and also played a role in South Africa’s qualification for the 2002 finals.

He takes over at a pivotal time, with preparations for the global showpiece already underway. Immediate priorities include assessing the playing squad, assembling his technical backroom staff and shaping the team’s overall tournament strategy.

Queiroz is expected to meet the squad next month when they regroup for an international friendly against Mexico, before concluding their pre-tournament schedule with a clash against Wales on June 2.

Ghana, preparing for its fifth FIFA World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L of the tournament, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Following underwhelming outings at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups in Brazil and Qatar, Queiroz will be tasked with steering Ghana to a more competitive showing on football’s biggest stage.

The lure of a World Cup saw a swathe of switches for African teams in the international break https://www.adomonline.com/the-lure-of-a-world-cup-saw-a-swathe-of-switches-for-african-teams-in-the-international-break/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651058 The March international break represented a penultimate opportunity for the head coaches of Africa’s national sides to assess debutants, call up new players and get last-minute nationality switches over the line in anticipation of the World Cup.

From high-profile converts who could become key figures for one of the continent’s 10 qualifiers during the tournament, to new faces who will be hoping they can force their way into contention, here’s our team-by-team guide for the debuting World Cup hopefuls who launched their international careers this month.

Morocco

The Confederation of African Football decided the week before the international break that Morocco were the new African champions at the expense of Senegal, and the Atlas Lions also got one over on their continental foe by securing the commitment of centreback Issa Diop.

The Fulham defender was born in Toulouse to a Moroccan mother and a Senegalese father, with his grandfather previously managing the Teranga Lions during the 60s.

Diop junior represented France up to U-21 level, and had previously been courted by both of the Africa Cup of Nations finalists, but ultimately decided to commit his future to the North Africans, despite previously suggesting he’d only turn out for Les Bleus at senior level.

“Going to another national team because I’m not in the French national team would be a little hypocritical of me,” he said in 2019.

“It would be going to a national team by default. I’m French, I love the French national team, and I want to play for them.

“Even if I am not selected for France, I will not change.”

At 29, he’s in his prime, has almost eight years of Premier League experience behind him, and represents a potential solution to a problem area for Mohamed Ouahbi’s side.

Centreback was a weakness for Morocco at the AFCON, with Nayef Aguerd being partnered by veterans Romain Saïss and Jawad El Yamiq, and Adam Masina at various points during the tournament.

Now, he’ll have the opportunity to partner Diop — the player he replaced at West Ham in 2022 — in what would be a significant upgrade for Morocco in the heart of the backline.

Given the presence of goalkeeper Yassine Bonou, the Lions can feasibly hope to have one of the most complete defences in the entirety of the World Cup field.

Recruiting the Fulham centreback was an ideal way for new coach Ouahbi to make a decisive change for the Lions after replacing Walid Regragui, and he impressed both in his debut against Ecuador and in the 2-1 triumph over Paraguay.

He looked composed, rugged in the duels, read the game well, and should prove to be a key pillar for this next cycle. Don’t be surprised to see Diop lining up for the World Cup hosts in 2030.

Another centreback, Montpellier-born Redouane Halhal, also made his debut, and could prove another beneficiary following Saiss’s international retirement in February.

Senegal

They may have missed out on Diop, but Senegal nonetheless brought in some new recruits during the international break as Pape Thiaw looked to bolster his (former) African champions.

While their pre-match trophy parade at the Stade de France stole the headlines, the international debuts of Nobel Mendy and Mamadou Diakhon went somewhat under the radar.

Centreback Mendy, currently with Rayo Vallecano on loan from Real Betis, where he plays alongside Teranga Lions international Pathé Ciss, opted for Senegal ahead of Guinea-Bissau.

However, he endured a nightmarish debut against Gambia as he sustained an injury late in the first half and had to be withdrawn.

The 21-year-old’s prognosis isn’t yet known, and he still has time before the season ends to demonstrate that he deserves a spot in Thiaw’s World Cup squad.

Wideman Diakhon, on the books of Club Brugge, had a big decision to make ahead of the international break, having been called up simultaneously for France U-21 and Senegal’s seniors while also courting interest from Mali.

Despite being born in Strasbourg, and having represented Les Bleus up to U-20 level, he opted to switch to the Teranga Lions, and came off the bench in the 3-1 victory over Gambia.

Given his fine form in Belgium and in Europe in recent months — he’s had a hand in seven goals in his last 15 outings — Diakhon appears well placed to hold down a squad berth for the World Cup.

Thiaw also noted that Lens defender Malang Sarr, formerly of Chelsea, remains in his plans, although the ex-France U-21 centreback is running out of time to stake his claim for inclusion.

Ivory Coast

After Morocco’s Diop, the most high-profit addition to the African football community this week was Elye Wahi, who finally ended his own hopes of turning out for France by committing to the Ivory Coast.

The Elephants aren’t short of attacking options, but the 23-year-old represents a valuable addition to Emerse Fae’s squad, and should be an upgrade on Jean-Philippe Krasso as starting centreforward.

Wahi needs to rediscover his best form, however. Here’s a player who scored 19 Ligue 1 goals for Montpellier in 22-23, but struggled in Germany with Eintracht Frankfurt, and has only just begun to suggest he can return to those levels since joining OGC Nice on loan in January.

“I was among those, at one point, who had closed the door on Elye,” Fae told journalists, “[but] I sensed sincerity when he spoke to the staff, and a strong desire to play for the Ivory Coast, to contribute to the team.”

The 2024 AFCON champions were rampant during the international break, defeating South Korea 4-0 then Scotland 1-0 without Wahi scoring. With him, they add an extra dimension to their attack.

Ex-England youth international Martial Godo did score in the thumping of Korea, with his fine form at Strasbourg putting him firmly in Fae’s vision.

The Elephants aren’t short in wide areas — they have Nicolas Pépé, Simon Adingra, Amad Diallo, Wilfried Zaha and Yan Diomande as options — but will Godo have enough to force his way into a congested zone for North America?

Egypt

Haissem Hassan was the standout inclusion for Egypt this international break, making his debut in the 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia before featuring against Spain.

The Pharaohs rarely call upon players born outside the North African country, and who didn’t come through at a club in the Egyptian Premier League, but the Paris-born former France youth international, born to an Egyptian father and a Tunisian mother, brings something a little different to the camp.

It was perhaps telling that Hassan’s first call-up came in an international window when veteran Mohamed Salah wasn’t included, and the 24-year-old – a natural wideman, capable of cutting inside – could be a natural long-term successor to the Liverpool great.

Ghana

Perhaps testament to the Black Stars’ struggles at the tail end of 2025, and their uncertainty heading into the World Cup, Otto Addo gave a swathe of new faces a late opportunity to impress during the international break.

However, with Addo removed from his post following the defeats by Austria and Germany, it remains to be seen how many of the new boys will still have a role to play under whoever is parachuted in to oversee Ghana’s World Cup campaign.

France-born Marvin Senaya accepted the call despite being the son of a Togo international, while former Netherlands U-21 international Derrick Luckassen, now 30, made his debut against Germany, delivering a fearless and confident showing.

Germany-born Patric Pfeiffer looks like a towering presence in defence, but his showing as the Black Stars conceded five against Austria did little to inspire confidence.

Algeria

There was plenty of churn and new faces in the Algeria squad named by Vladimir Petkovic, with Fares Ghedjemis in particular catching the eye.

The Frosinone wideman debuted in the 7-0 demolition of Guatemala, finding the net in the process. It’s a first impression that’s likely to go down well with the Bosnian head coach.

Goalkeepers Melvin Mastil and Kilian Belazzoug and defender Sohaib Nair were among the others to be given an opportunity to integrate into the fold, while Adil Aouchiche of Schalke is a big coup for Les Fennecs after making the switch from France.

Tunisia

Rani Khedira, the younger brother of World Cup-winning former Germany international Sami, was the standout inclusion in Tunisia’s squad.

Previously a Germany youth international, Khedira rejected several previous approaches from the Tunisia federation — the first dating from over a decade ago — before finally agreeing to Sabri Lamouchi’s latest attempt to recruit him.

A versatile defensive midfielder, Khedira should bring experience, poise and maturity to a team still reeling after a poor AFCON.

Cape Verde

The islanders called up five new players for their international friendlies, clearly using the allure of World Cup qualification to attempt to bolster their roster.

Players born in the States, Netherlands, France, Luxembourg and Angola were included, with Jordan Mendes, Jorginho Soares, Ayoni Santos, Fabio Domingos and Ieltsin Camoes making their debuts in the break.

Congo DR

Jeremy Ngakia was named in Sebastien Desabre’s provisional squad for the friendly against Bermuda and the FIFA World Cup playoff against Jamaica.

The 25-year-old Watford man had to pull out of the squad due to a hamstring injury, and it remains to be seen whether the Deptford-born fullback will get his opportunity again before the World Cup.

Liverpool can do special things against PSG – Slot https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-can-do-special-things-against-psg-slot/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651049 Arne Slot insists his Liverpool side still believe they can do something special against Paris St-Germain in the return leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

PSG go into the tie at Anfield with a two-goal lead after winning convincingly in Paris last week but Slot was adamant the Reds can pull off what would be a comeback for the ages.

When attempting to overcome a deficit of two or more goals from an away European first leg, Liverpool have only progressed on two of 13 occasions (against Auxerre in 1991 and Barcelona in 2019).

“In the last 50 home games we have played, 36 times we were able to score two goals or more. Yes, we don’t play PSG in all of those home games but the opponents we have had across the Premier League and Champions League are very strong,” said Slot.

“Yes, there is a belief we can do special things but we also need to be very, very, very special because we are playing against the champions of Europe, so that makes the task more complicated but not impossible,” he added.

And Slot called on the Anfield crowd to help inspire his side in the same way they played their part when Liverpool came from behind to emphatically knock Galatasaray out in the previous round.

“They [the fans] will be just as important as our performance,” he said.

“I think we have to be much much better than last week, and their players are experienced and have experienced Anfield a year ago [when they went through on penalties].

“They know what is coming up so I can only hope that our fans find an extra gear compared to last year when the atmosphere was unbelievable.

“But I think our fans are up for it and I think I can trust them [to be] even louder than last season.”

Asked where the belief would come from, given the feeble nature of Liverpool’s display in France last week where they failed to manage a shot on target and Slot admitted they were “lucky” to only lose 2-0, the Dutchman emphasised that his side have shown how much better they can play.

“You want one example, two, 10 or 200? After the first half at the Etihad [in the 4-0 FA Cup defeat against Manchester City] did you expect City to be three goals up after 20 minutes of the second half?” said Slot.

“Against Galatasaray, we could have scored eight or nine at home, so the amount of times that we have shown we can be much better than we were at PSG, that’s clear.

“A goal can change momentum, which happened in a negative way at the Etihad and in a positive way on Saturday [against Fulham] at Anfield.”

‘We want it so bad’

Slot’s belief was echoed by Dominik Szoboszlai, who stressed that he and his team-mates are going to give everything to try to keep Liverpool’s Champions League hopes alive.

“I believe completely because I know what we are able to do, what kind of players we have and what kind of mentality we have,” the Hungarian said.

“We’ve shown it many times, but maybe not every time, and that’s what we need again from the start.

“My message to them [the fans] is that we are going to go all in. We’ll give our best from minute one to minute 90 or maybe for 120, 125 minutes if needed.

“I can speak for all the players – we want it so bad and in one game anything can happen at Anfield.”

PSG’s Ligue One game against Lens at the weekend was postponed to help them prepare for the second leg, and Ibrahima Konate has said the extra rest will benefit the French team.

Szoboszlai agreed, saying: “Of course it is a difference when they can rest between the two games. It gives them two days extra for recovery, analysing the game, getting ready for the game.

“We have to deal with it and we are professional enough to deal with it. That is our job to do.”

Liverpool beat Fulham at the weekend, with 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha scoring his first Anfield goal, and Slot admitted that the teenager could play a role on Tuesday.

“Yeah I think he can [cope] – first of all because of personality, he doesn’t get distracted,” said Slot.

“Everyone who knows his history, there is expectation around him for years and he has always been able to focus on football and been ready at 16 years of age to score his first goal and at 17 to have multiple starts for Liverpool.

“Secondly, his quality. He has shown he is able to take one-on-ones on and make it difficult for the defenders he is facing.

“He has done a very good job managing what comes to him now but it also helps to have so many good players around him.”

Tottenham in advanced talks to sign Robertson https://www.adomonline.com/tottenham-in-advanced-talks-to-sign-robertson/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 05:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2651055 Tottenham are in advanced talks over a free transfer for Liverpool defender Andy Robertson this summer.

Robertson confirmed last week he is leaving Anfield after nine years at the club when his contract expires this summer.

Spurs have a long-term interest in the 32-year-old left-back and tried to sign him during the January transfer window but Liverpool were not prepared to let him leave.

Tottenham remain committed to signing the Scotland captain and while sources insist a full agreement is yet to be reached, discussions are understood to be at an advanced stage.

Any deal, however, is contingent on Spurs staying in the Premier League.

They are 18th in the table and in the relegation zone, two points adrift of 17th-placed West Ham.

Tottenham want to add experience and leadership to their squad this summer and view Robertson as a key target before manager Roberto de Zerbi’s first full season in charge.

Meanwhile, club captain Cristian Romero is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained in Sunday’s loss to Sunderland.

Romero looked visibly upset as he limped off after a collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, and has been ruled out of Tottenham’s final six games.

The injury could also have an impact on the 27-year-old’s involvement in Argentina’s World Cup squad.

Mother of the late Dominic Frimpong breaks silence after robbery attack https://www.adomonline.com/mother-of-the-late-dominic-frimpong-breaks-silence-after-robbery-attack/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 18:50:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650937 Grief has gripped the family of Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong after the 20-year-old was killed in a brutal armed robbery attack on the team’s bus on Sunday night.

Frimpong was among players and officials returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex on Sunday night in Samreboi when the attack occurred along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso stretch.

According to reports, armed robbers blocked the road before opening fire on the bus, forcing passengers to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes.

During the chaos, Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

In an emotional account, his mother described him as the backbone of the family and the main provider who worked tirelessly to support them and build a better future.

“He means everything to me. He was my firstborn, and we did almost everything together, including making decisions. He is very respectful and avoids conflict, something anyone can testify to. Although he is grown, he always listens whenever I advise or caution him,” she said.

Frimpong, who joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana Stars in January, had featured 13 times in the Ghana Premier League this season, scoring twice.

The incident has shocked Ghana’s football community and renewed concerns about the safety of clubs travelling for domestic matches. The Ghana Football Association is expected to review security arrangements for team movements in the wake of the tragedy.

The 20-year-old, who was on loan from Aduana FC, was confirmed dead after an armed robbery attack on the team bus on Sunday, April 12.

The club was returning to Berekum after their Matchday 29 Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park, a match they lost 1-0, when the incident occurred.

According to reports, armed men opened fire on the bus, forcing players and officials to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes in a bid to escape.

During the chaos, Frimpong sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The devastating news has triggered an outpouring of grief across social media, with several Ghanaian clubs and football stakeholders paying tribute to the young striker.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched a manhunt for the armed robbers behind the attack, which occurred at Ahyiresu.

Police launch manhunt after Berekum Chelsea player killed in highway robbery attack https://www.adomonline.com/police-launch-manhunt-after-berekum-chelsea-player-killed-in-highway-robbery-attack/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 14:30:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650815 The Ghana Police Service has initiated a manhunt following the fatal shooting of Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong during a violent armed robbery on the Ahyiresu–KDS stretch.

The incident occurred on Sunday night as the team returned from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex. The team bus was travelling along the Bibiani–Goaso road when it was reportedly ambushed by six armed men.

In the ensuing chaos, players and officials abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes as the attackers opened fire and attempted to rob passengers. Several team members sustained injuries during the escape.

Frimpong was struck in the head and later confirmed dead after being rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency treatment.

In a statement issued on April 13, 2026, police confirmed that their patrol teams responded swiftly after receiving distress calls, reaching the scene shortly after the attack. The bus, according to the statement, veered off the road and ended up in a bush while trying to evade the gunmen.

Investigators retrieved two spent BB cartridges from the scene, which are expected to support ongoing forensic analysis. Authorities say efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects “within the shortest possible time.”

Police also disclosed that another victim, 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of GH¢4,500 during the incident.

Additional officers and crime scene experts have since been deployed to the area as the search for the attackers intensifies.

We will continue with Premier League games despite robbery attack – Berekum Chelsea https://www.adomonline.com/we-will-continue-with-premier-league-games-despite-robbery-attack-berekum-chelsea/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 14:12:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650808 Communication Team Member of Berekum Chelsea Albert Diewuo has confirmed that the club will continue to compete in the Ghana Premier League, with players receiving psychological support to cope with the situation.

The playing body and technical team members were attacked by armed robbers while returning from their Matchday 29 game against FC Samartex at the DUN’s Park on Sunday.

The incident led to the tragic death of forward Dominic Frimpong after he sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Speaking on the Ultimate Sports Show on Asempa FM, Albert Diewuo stated that the team is not considering a withdrawal but will continue in the league with the help of a psychologist following the traumatic experience.

“The team is traumatised after the incident. We will continue with the league and rely on our psychologist to help the players recover for the next games. We are not considering withdrawing,” he said.

When asked about their security arrangements, Albert Diewuo explained that the team’s travel plans often depend on the availability of police support, stating, “Sometimes we travel with security, sometimes we don’t. We request a police escort; if we get it, we go with them; if not, we move on our own. Yesterday we had no police escort.”

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) will engage key stakeholders to review and strengthen team travel security for domestic competitions to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.

It was an open game – Didi Dramani despite Hearts of Oak’s loss at Vision FC https://www.adomonline.com/it-was-an-open-game-didi-dramani-despite-hearts-of-oaks-loss-at-vision-fc/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 13:58:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650805 Hearts of Oak head coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani, says the game against Vision FC was an even contest, with the result going either way following their defeat.

The Phobians conceded a late goal to suffer a 1-0 defeat to Vision on Saturday in the Matchday 29 games, dealing a blow to their title ambitions as they failed to close the gap on the teams above them.

Speaking after the game, Didi Dramani noted that it was a tightly fought encounter that saw a few chances created, insisting there was no game flow.

“It was an open game, and either side could win the game, and I think that everyone will be disappointed because we came to play to try to win the game, and so if you don’t get the outcome that you need, you should be disappointed,” he said.

“I’m not sure there will be a team that could have won this game here. So there were so many factors that wouldn’t give us a chance to go in there, and we needed a flow of the game, and there was no flow of the game,” he added.

The defeat leaves the Rainbow Club third in the league standings, failing to catch up with the top two as they fall 7 points behind league toppers Medeama SC.

With five games left, Hearts of Oak will now turn its attention to Karela United as the Phobians hope to return to winning ways to improve their title ambitions.

Man Utd fall to shock defeat to Leeds as Martinez sent off https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-fall-to-shock-defeat-to-leeds-as-martinez-sent-off/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 12:28:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650998 A tremendous performance from Leeds United saw them deservedly win at Old Trafford for the first time since 1981, Noah Okafor’s early double sending them six points clear of the relegation zone with just six games to go,

Manchester United had not played in 24 days and it showed – they were sluggish and disorganised just as Leeds were aggressive and grooved, and fully deserved to fall two goals behind, Okafor notching after five and 29 minutes.

The home side did improve a little thereafter but, on 56 minutes, Lisandro Martinez was sent off having pulled Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair. They did, though, halve the deficit, Casemiro heading home a Bruno Fernandes cross, but struggled to create enough to level, Benjamin Sesko having a header saved and Calvert-Lewin clearing off the line from Leny Yoro.

Results over the weekend mean that this result is not a disaster for Michael Carrick’s side, who remain third in the table and seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea – who they face at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening.

Thomas Partey pleads not guilty to two further counts of rape https://www.adomonline.com/thomas-partey-pleads-not-guilty-to-two-further-counts-of-rape/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 12:00:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650826 Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape.

Partey, 32, gave his plea at a hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, a day after he was not part of the matchday squad for Spanish side Villarreal’s La Liga game against Athletic Club.

Those two counts will be tried alongside five other counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, already set to be tried at Southwark Crown Court following earlier not guilty pleas by Partey. The trial was originally scheduled for November this year, but it may now be delayed until early 2027.

Partey, who signed for La Liga club Villarreal as a free agent in August 2025, appeared at court dressed in black, arriving in a people carrier and declining to speak with reporters.

At a hearing in September 2025, Partey entered not guilty pleas to five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three women. In February, he was subsequently charged with two further counts of rape relating to a separate complainant.

At a hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on March 13, deputy chief magistrate Tan Ikram ruled that Partey must not make any direct or indirect contact with the new complainant, consistent with his existing bail conditions. Those conditions also require him to notify authorities of any changes to his address or plans to travel abroad.

Speaking in February, Partey’s defence lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, said: “Thomas Partey continues to deny all charges against him. He has cooperated fully with the police throughout. Given that legal proceedings are ongoing, there will be no further comment.”

Partey was first charged in July 2025, just four days after his Arsenal contract expired and he left the club.

He had previously appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court the following month, when he was granted conditional bail. Two days later, the Ghana international captain joined Villarreal on a one-year deal as a free agent, with an option to extend for an additional year.

After his €50million (£42.7m; $57.3m) move from Atletico Madrid in October 2020, Partey made 167 appearances for Arsenal. He has earned 53 caps for Ghana and played at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

This season, he has featured in 26 matches for Villarreal, starting 12 times. The Spanish side are next in action against Real Oviedo away on April 23.

Old Tafo MP mourns Berekum Chelsea player killed in robbery attack https://www.adomonline.com/old-tafo-mp-mourns-berekum-chelsea-player-killed-in-robbery-attack/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 09:57:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650664 Old Tafo Member of Parliament (MP) Vincent Ekow Assafuah has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong, who was shot in an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District.

In a social media post, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Sports and Youth Committee described the incident as a devastating blow to Ghana football and raised concerns about safety on the country’s highways.

He said the attack underscores the urgent need to strengthen security for teams travelling for league matches.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Berekum Chelsea’s Dominic Frimpong following the armed robbery attack on the team bus after their match against Samartex. This is a painful loss to Ghana football and a stark reminder of the growing insecurity on our highways,” he said.

“My heartfelt condolences go to his family, Berekum Chelsea, and the entire football fraternity. I call on the Ghana Police Service and all relevant authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and urgently strengthen security for our clubs on match travels. May Dominic’s soul rest in perfect peace,” he added.

The armed and masked assailants reportedly opened fire on the vehicle as the driver attempted to reverse to safety.

The sudden ambush forced players and technical staff to abandon the bus and flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.

The late Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana FC, sustained gunshot injuries and later succumbed while receiving treatment at the Bibiani Government Hospital.

GFA demands justice over death of Dominic Frimpong https://www.adomonline.com/gfa-demands-justice-over-death-of-dominic-frimpong/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 08:59:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650641 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has called for swift justice following the death of Berekum Chelsea striker Dominic Frimpong, who was killed in a violent armed robbery attack on Sunday night.

Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana FC, lost his life after the team bus was ambushed on the Bibiani–Goaso road as the squad returned from their Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex, which ended in a 1–0 defeat.

According to reports, armed assailants opened fire on the vehicle, forcing players and officials of Berekum Chelsea to abandon the bus and flee into nearby bushes in a bid to escape the attack. Several members of the travelling party sustained injuries during the chaos.

The injured striker was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was later pronounced dead on arrival.

In a statement, the GFA expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a devastating blow not only to Berekum Chelsea but to the entire Ghanaian football community.

“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole,” the Ghana FA said.

The Association said it is working closely with Berekum Chelsea, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant authorities as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

It also urged security agencies to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, adding that it is in constant communication with the club and relevant authorities as probes continue.

The incident has reignited longstanding concerns over player safety and security during league travel, with several Ghana Premier League clubs in recent years reporting similar highway attacks while on official duty.

New Black Stars head coach expected to be named this week https://www.adomonline.com/new-black-stars-head-coach-expected-to-be-named-this-week/ Mon, 13 Apr 2026 08:09:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2650605 The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has disclosed that Ghana is close to appointing a new head coach for the Black Stars, with an official announcement expected within the week.

The senior national team has been without a permanent manager since Otto Addo left the role following March’s international friendlies against Austria and Germany.

In an interview on Channel One TV, the Buem Member of Parliament said the recruitment process has reached its final phase, with the Ghana Football Association set to unveil a new coach imminently.

He noted that the announcement could come before the weekend, but assured that, at the latest, a new manager would be presented by Monday.

“If by this weekend we don’t announce the coach, then by Monday at the latest we should be able to present our new Black Stars coach,” he said.

Adams also expressed confidence in the prospects of the Black Stars, insisting the team has the quality to compete at the highest level and even challenge for global honours.

“We have what it takes to go very far, maybe even win the World Cup. Let’s remain hopeful,” he added.

A number of high-profile coaches, including Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, and Fernando Santos, have been linked with the vacancy.

The new coach is expected to take charge ahead of an international friendly against Mexico in May, as preparations intensify for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

The four-time African champions will be seeking to improve on their recent World Cup performances, having exited at the group stage in both the 2014 and 2022 editions.
