According to renowned Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Partey will exit the club as a free agent.

“Thomas Partey, set to leave Arsenal as a free agent at the end of the month,” Romano confirmed via his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Arsenal had been in discussions with the player’s representatives regarding a possible extension but failed to reach an agreement.

In preparation for his departure, the Gunners have reportedly lined up Brentford’s Christian Nørgaard as a potential replacement.

The North London side is believed to be working on a deal worth an initial £10 million, with an additional £5 million in performance-related bonuses.

Partey, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in 2020 on a five-year contract, has made 167 appearances and scored nine goals for the club.

He is now attracting interest from clubs in Spain, Italy, and Saudi Arabia.

Kwesi Nyantakyi urges GFA, Clubs to share security costs to tackle hooliganism https://www.adomonline.com/kwesi-nyantakyi-urges-gfa-clubs-to-share-security-costs-to-tackle-hooliganism/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 21:39:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548136 Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has called on both the GFA and local football clubs to take joint responsibility for ensuring adequate security at match venues to combat rising hooliganism.

Speaking to Joy Sports in a documentary titled ‘Scars of Hooliganism’, Nyantakyi expressed concern about the growing threat of violence at football matches. He warned that the lack of proper security not only endangers lives but also tarnishes the image of the sport, leading to lower fan attendance and reduced sponsorship.

“Lack of security is violence, and that can lead to loss of lives, property, injury, etc,” he said.

Nyantakyi proposed that clubs be required to contribute a minimum fee to support security operations on matchdays, especially given the travel and logistical expenses incurred by security personnel such as police and military officers.

“The GFA must consider clubs contributing a certain minimum amount to bear the cost of security,” he said.
“When police, soldiers, or whoever are deployed as security personnel, some travel from faraway places and will incur costs.”

He believes that a joint effort in funding security measures would help restore discipline and enhance the matchday experience for fans, players, and officials alike.

Black Queens rally from behind to beat Benin in second pre-WAFCON friendly https://www.adomonline.com/black-queens-rally-from-behind-to-beat-benin-in-second-pre-wafcon-friendly/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 21:38:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548405 Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, continued their strong preparations for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a 4-2 comeback victory over Benin on Wednesday.

Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s side, fresh from a commanding win over Malawi last weekend, started brightly as Nina Norshie opened the scoring just four minutes in with a clever back flick.

Benin responded quickly, equalising in the 11th minute before taking the lead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute, heading into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.

Ghana came out stronger in the second half, with Alice Kusi levelling the score. Susan Ama Duah then put the Queens ahead in the 70th minute, and Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah sealed the win with a goal in the 81st minute.

The Black Queens will wrap up their pre-tournament preparations with a final friendly against Nigeria on Sunday.

Ghana is drawn in Group C at the 2024 WAFCON, set to kick off on July 5. They will face defending champions South Africa, along with Tanzania and Mali, as they aim to win the tournament for the first time in their 13th appearance.

2024 WAFCON: We’re not favourites – Black Queens coach https://www.adomonline.com/2024-wafcon-were-not-favourites-black-queens-coach/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 21:38:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548118 Head coach of the Black Queens, Kim Lars Bjorkegren, has acknowledged that Ghana may not be among the frontrunners to win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), but believes his side has the potential to spring a surprise at the tournament.

Ghana’s senior women’s national team will be making a return to the continental competition for the first time since 2018.

Despite reaching the finals in 1998, 2002, and 2006, the elusive WAFCON trophy has remained out of reach for the Queens.

Speaking to CAFOnline.com, the Swedish coach played down his side’s chances of lifting the title.

“Ghana hasn’t won the title, and the last final was in 2006. So we’re not among the favourites,” he said.
“But I believe we can be a strong underdog. If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team.”

Bjorkegren, who took over from Nora Hauptle earlier this year after her contract was not renewed by the Ghana Football Association, says the team is still undergoing a transition as they build toward long-term success.

“We still have work to do, both on and off the pitch. Tactically, we need to be more organised, and fitness levels must improve,” he continued.
“One of our long-term goals is to get our top players competing in stronger leagues. We’ve had very limited training sessions so far, but with every camp, we grow stronger.”

Ghana has been drawn into a challenging group alongside reigning champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

The 2024 WAFCON kicks off in Morocco on July 5, and Bjorkegren will be hoping to guide the Black Queens to their maiden title.

Arsenal agree fee with Brentford to sign midfielder Christian Norgaard https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-agree-fee-with-brentford-to-sign-midfielder-christian-norgaard/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 21:29:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548401 Arsenal have agreed a fee of £10m plus add-ons to sign Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard.

One source has told Sky Sports News those add-ons amount to £5m if they are all met, taking the total value of the deal to a possible £15m.

There is still some further work to do to sign the 31-year-old Bees captain but everything is pointing towards a conclusion in the coming days.

The Denmark international wants to move to the Emirates Stadium and personal terms are not expected to be an issue.

The Gunners’ interest in the Brentford captain comes amid Thomas Partey’s expiring contract at Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side are acting quickly after being thus far unable to find an agreement over a new deal for Partey.

As it stands, the Ghana international will leave the Gunners when his contract expires next week.

The 32-year-old’s representatives have been approached by clubs in Saudi Arabia and Europe.

Arsenal are yet to make a signing this summer, but goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is expected in London this week to put the final touches to a £5m switch from Chelsea to the Gunners.

The north London side are also closing in on a £51m deal to sign midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.

In front of thousands of empty seats at the Bank of America Stadium, Jobe Bellingham registered his first assist in Dortmund colours when he teed up Daniel Svensson to tuck away the only goal of the game.

Bellingham was inches away from scoring his second goal since his move from Sunderland, but his sweetly-struck volley rose over the bar.

Wing-back Yan Couto thought he had made sure of the success for the German side late on, but Ulsan goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo produced a stunning fingertip save.

Elsewhere in Group F, Brazil’s Fluminense also reached the knockout stage in second spot after a goalless draw with South African side Mamelodi Sundowns, who finished third in the table.

Should the deal be finalized, Kamaldeen will reunite with his former coach, Ivan Juric. The pair previously worked together at Southampton during the 2024/25 season.

Under Juric’s guidance, Kamaldeen featured in 26 Premier League games, starting 17 and averaging 55 minutes per match. He contributed one goal and one assist during that campaign.

With transfer speculation mounting around his future in England, a move to Italy now appears increasingly likely for the highly-rated winger.

Ghana’s senior women’s national team is currently in North Africa fine-tuning strategies for the tournament, which kicks off on July 5.

Before their departure, the Queens played a series of warm-up matches and continued their build-up with an impressive 3-1 victory over Malawi last Saturday.

Forward Doris Boaduwaa stole the spotlight with a stunning hat-trick in the first of three scheduled friendlies.

The team will face Benin later today at the Ziaida Complex in Benslimane and round off their preparatory matches with a highly anticipated clash against arch-rivals Nigeria on Sunday.

Coach Björkegren is expected to finalize his 23-player roster after these fixtures, as Ghana looks to make a strong impression in their first WAFCON appearance since 2018.

The Black Queens have been drawn into a competitive Group C alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

Kotoko wrapped up the recently concluded season in third place, finishing five points behind champions Bibiani GoldStars.

Despite missing out on the league trophy, the club ended the campaign on a high by lifting their 10th FA Cup title, securing qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

With the new league season set to kick off in September, Duku revealed that the club is making strategic signings aimed at building a youthful and competitive squad.

“We’ve taken our time to sign the best players from the country and will be combining them with some foreign ones. We will only sign young players with a positive outlook, a proven track record, and the ability to attract interest from abroad,” he told Akoma FM.

He expressed confidence that with minor improvements to last season’s performance, Kotoko will clinch the league title.

“We will field the best players, and if we are to improve a little on last season’s performance, we will win the league title sooner than anticipated,” he added.

Duku also touched on the club’s ambitions in continental football, emphasizing their determination to make a mark in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“As for Africa, it’s been a while since Kotoko qualified for the group stages, but the goal is to outperform our previous campaign,” he said.

As part of their squad reinforcement efforts, Kotoko have already secured the services of Francis Acquah, Hubert Gyau, and Johnson Owusu Oppong.

Abraham Kotei Neequaye resigns as GBA President https://www.adomonline.com/abraham-kotei-neequaye-resigns-as-gba-president/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 06:10:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547964 The President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Abraham Kotei Neequaye, has announced his decision to step down from his position, citing personal reasons.

The announcement was contained in a press release circulated on Wednesday night by the GBA’s Communications Director, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, via WhatsApp.

“I deeply regret to inform fellow Ghanaians that I am resigning as the president of Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) due to personal reasons,” Mr. Neequaye disclosed in the statement.

He described the decision as “difficult to make,” but indicated that it was “the best course of action for me and some executive board members with integrity and dignity at this crucial time.”

His resignation will take effect on Friday, June 27, 2025, after an official press conference scheduled for 10:00 am at the GBA Secretariat, where he will formally announce his exit from the role.

Reflecting on his tenure, Mr. Neequaye expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as president of the GBA, stating, “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that I have been given as the GBA president. I actually value the insights that I have learned, and I expect them to help me in my future endeavours.”

He clarified that the decision followed “careful considerations of my career goals and personal aspirations.”

Mr. Neequaye also acknowledged the difficult moments faced during his administration, especially when he and some of his board members encountered public criticism.

“Let me seize the opportunity to thank the media landscape for the support you offered me and my board members, especially those of us who suffered character assassination during these difficult times,” he stated.

The GBA President emphasised that the role was entirely voluntary and came without financial benefit.

“I want to thank fellow compatriots wherever you are for being supportive of my professional growth in an office that doesn’t pay salary or allowance but just a sacrificial work to serve others and one’s country,” he wrote.

The press release extended an invitation to media outlets to attend Friday’s press conference “to equip yourself with firsthand information.”

Delap scores first goal as Chelsea progress at Club World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/delap-scores-first-goal-as-chelsea-progress-at-club-world-cup/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 06:07:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547961 Striker Liam Delap scored his first Chelsea goal as the Blues qualified for the knockout stages of the Club World Cup with a win over ES Tunis.

The 22-year-old scored with a placed shot deep into first half added time to get off the mark after his £30m move from Ipswich earlier this month.

It came just two minutes after defender Tosin Adarabioyo headed in a free-kick from Enzo Fernandez to open the scoring.

Substitute Tyrique George added a late third with practically the last kick of the match n front of 32,967 fans at Lincoln Financial Field.

Manager Enzo Maresca’s team selection appeared to be impacted by the extreme temperatures in Philadelphia, which still ‘felt like’ 36C by the 9pm kick-off because of the humidity.

The Italian made eight changes and rested star forward Cole Palmer, Chelsea’s top scorer in the competition Pedro Neto, and record signing Moises Caicedo.

Maresca rang further changes during a flat second half as Chelsea eased away from an improbable upset against their African opponents, who came into the match needing a win to progress at Chelsea’s expense.

Victory means Chelsea progress as runners-up in Group D, behind winners Flamengo, to set up a last-16 meeting with Portuguese club Benfica.

Arsenal set to sign Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-set-to-sign-chelsea-goalkeeper-kepa/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 06:00:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547968 Arsenal are set to complete the signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga this week.

The 30-year-old has a £5m release clause after adding an extra year to his contract last summer before a successful loan spell at Bournemouth.

The former Spain international will soon join Arsenal to compete with compatriot David Raya for the starting spot.

Arsenal needed a new number two goalkeeper after opting against signing Neto, who spent last season on loan at Emirates Stadium from Bournemouth, on a permanent basis.

Kepa remains the world’s most expensive goalkeeper since joining Chelsea in 2018 for £72m from boyhood club Athletic Bilbao.

He played 163 times for Chelsea, winning four major honours during a mixed seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge.

He also spent a season on loan at Real Madrid and won La Liga and the Champions League during the 2023-24 season.

“I’ve always heard about the passion and support this club receives in continental football, and I’m eager to be part of it for as long as I’m here.”

Acquah is known for his composure, intelligence, and ability to read the game. Though primarily a left-back, he is capable of playing across the back line, offering tactical flexibility to Kotoko’s defence.

He is expected to make his debut in the highly anticipated President’s Cup clash against arch-rivals Accra Hearts of Oak on July 6, 2025.

In addition to Acquah, Asante Kotoko have also announced the signing of midfielder Hubert Gyau from Berekum Chelsea as part of their squad strengthening efforts ahead of the continental competition.

Ernest Nuamah’s Lyon relegated to Ligue 2 over financial issues https://www.adomonline.com/ernest-nuamahs-lyon-relegated-to-ligue-2-over-financial-issues/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 21:24:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547952 Seven-time French champions Lyon, owned by American businessman John Textor, have been relegated to the second tier of French football due to the club’s financial problems, the French Professional League announced (LFP) announced on Tuesday.

Lyon plan to appeal the decision, sources told ESPN.

Textor and Mickael Gerlinger, the club’s director of football, were interviewed by The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG), the French financial regulators in charge of keeping checks on all professional clubs’ accounts and financial health.

In November, the DNCG provisionally relegated Lyon because of a €175 million ($203.34 million) debt and no clear plan from the club on how to reduce it. A transfer ban was also imposed in the January transfer window.

Textor’s proposal to transfer funds from Botafogo, another club he owns in Brazil, to Lyon in order to cover the debts was denied.

However, Lyon bosses were confident on Tuesday that they would be able to satisfactorily answer all questions and provide reasons why they should not be relegated to Ligue 2.

Earlier this month they raised €42.5 million from the transfer of Rayan Cherki to Manchester City.

And on Monday, Premier League side Crystal Palace announced that New York Jets owner Woody Johnson signed “a legally binding contract” to buy Textor’s shares. Textor sold his 43% stake in the London club for $254 million.

But the club has been under growing pressure.

Two years ago, the DNCG decided to monitor the club’s transfer activities, saying its moves on the market would be limited under “a framework for wage costs and transfer indemnities.”

Lyon won their seven league titles from 2002-08 and reached the Champions League semifinals in 2020.

Lyon narrowly lost to Manchester United in the Europa League quarterfinals and missed out on a cash windfall when they failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League after finishing sixth in Ligue 1.

Gyau made his breakthrough during the 2023/24 Ghana Premier League season, making a dozen appearances as an 18-year-old.

He built on that momentum the following season, featuring in 27 matches and establishing himself as a vital presence in midfield.

On Friday, June 20, Hearts of Oak officially announced Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as their new head coach for the 2025/26 season. The former Black Stars assistant coach has signed a two-year contract with the Accra-based club.

Ouattara, who led Hearts of Oak for the past two seasons, criticised the club’s handling of the transition.

The Ivorian coach revealed that he was not informed by the club’s management prior to Dramani’s appointment, calling it a significant administrative error.

“You cannot appoint a coach while another coach is in place. It is a big administrative mistake,” he said in an interview aired on Pure FM.

“If you want to appoint a new coach, talk to me, but they rather ghosted me,” he added.

Following Dramani’s arrival, Ouattara has been reassigned to a new role as Special Advisor to the club’s Board of Directors.

Hearts of Oak is now a mediocre club – Polo laments club’s decline https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-is-now-a-mediocre-club-polo-laments-clubs-decline/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 11:27:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547717 Hearts of Oak legend Mohammed Ahmed Polo has expressed his disappointment over the club’s recent struggles, criticising both management and the team’s performance.

Once a dominant force in Ghanaian football, the Phobians have failed to maintain consistency since clinching the Premier League and back-to-back FA Cup titles under coach Samuel Boadu — achievements that ended a 13-year trophy drought.

In the recently concluded 2024/25 season, Hearts of Oak finished fourth in the Ghana Premier League with 58 points and were knocked out in the Round of 16 of the FA Cup.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Polo did not hold back in assessing the club’s current situation.

“Hearts of Oak is now a mediocre club. They finished fourth, and the management were celebrating, which is unacceptable for the status of Hearts of Oak,” he said.

He added, “Hearts of Oak should be playing at the Club World Cup. We beat Esperance to win a cup, but they are today playing at the Club World Cup, and it is because of bad management — that has led to where Hearts of Oak is now.”

In a move aimed at reviving the club’s fortunes, Hearts of Oak have appointed former Asante Kotoko and Black Stars assistant coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as head coach on a two-year contract.

The club also announced that outgoing coach Aboubakar Ouattara will now serve as Special Advisor to the Board of Directors.

Didi Dramani’s appointment doesn’t guarantee success – Polo warns Hearts of Oak https://www.adomonline.com/didi-dramanis-appointment-doesnt-guarantee-success-polo-warns-hearts-of-oak/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 11:06:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547693

Hearts of Oak legend Mohammed Ahmed Polo has expressed doubts over the club’s decision to appoint Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as head coach, warning that the move alone does not guarantee success.

Dramani, a former Black Stars assistant coach, was recently unveiled as the new trainer on a two-year contract ahead of the 2025/26 football season.

The ex-Asante Kotoko manager, who previously led the Porcupine Warriors to two Ghana Premier League titles and an FA Cup triumph, has been tasked with reviving the Phobians after a disappointing, trophyless 2024/25 campaign.

But Polo believes Hearts’ problems go beyond just the head coach role.

“Didi Dramani’s appointment doesn’t guarantee success. What is he coming to do?” Polo asked during an interview with Sporty FM.

He referenced the tenure of outgoing coach Aboubakar Ouattara, saying, “Ouattara came in and almost took the club to relegation, and in the second season, he didn’t win anything for the club.”

“Now Didi Dramani is coming, but that doesn’t guarantee success until the right thing is done,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hearts of Oak have reassigned Ouattara to serve as Special Advisor to the club’s Board of Directors.

Hearts of Oak reassign Aboubakar Ouattara as Special Advisor to the Board https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-reassign-aboubakar-ouattara-as-special-advisor-to-the-board/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 10:26:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547654 Ghana Premier League giants, Hearts of Oak, have reassigned Aboubakar Ouattara as Special Advisor to the Board of Directors.

The announcement comes shortly after the club appointed Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as head coach on a two-year deal ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Ouattara, who was appointed head coach in January 2024 on a two-and-a-half-year contract, played a key role in steering the Phobians clear of relegation. Under his leadership, the club finished the just-ended season in a respectable 4th place.

In an official statement issued on Tuesday, June 24, Hearts of Oak confirmed Ouattara’s new role:

“The Board of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club has reassigned Aboubakar Ouattara from the role of Head Coach to Special Advisor to the Board of Directors.

As a Special Advisor, Aboubakar Ouattara will be working directly with the Board of Directors on special assignments and duties. The Board conveys its congratulations to Aboubakar Ouattara in his new role and looks forward to a good collaboration to move the club to new heights.”

Meanwhile, newly appointed head coach Didi Dramani has begun preparations with the team for the 2025 President’s Cup.

Hearts of Oak will face arch-rivals Asante Kotoko in the one-off fixture scheduled for July 6, 2025, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Pacers’ Haliburton could miss all of 2025-26 season https://www.adomonline.com/pacers-haliburton-could-miss-all-of-2025-26-season/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 09:56:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547647 Indiana Pacers superstar Tyrese Haliburton could miss the entire 2025-26 NBA season after having surgery on a torn right Achilles tendon.

The 25-year-old fell to the court without any contact as he attempted to drive to the basket seven minutes into the first quarter of the decisive game seven of the NBA Championship play-off finals at the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He was in obvious distress as he was helped from the court and missed the rest of the game, which his side lost 103-91 to end their hopes of a first NBA title.

The Pacers confirmed he would have surgery on Monday on the injury, which has a likely recovery time of eight to 10 months.

The two-time All Star is the third high-profile player to suffer a ruptured Achilles tendon in this season’s play-offs, following Boston’s Jayson Tatum and Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard.

The injury is similar to one that kept Kevin Durant out for a full season when he was hurt in the 2019 NBA Finals while playing for the Golden State Warriors.

Haliburton had played in Sunday’s decider despite suffering a calf strain in game five of the finals.

It followed an amazing run where he hit a tying or winning shot in the final seconds in all four rounds of the play-offs.

“I’d do it again, and again after that, to fight for this city and my brothers,” he posted on X after the surgery. “For the chance to do something special.

“Words cannot express the pain of this letdown. The frustration is unfathomable. I’ve worked my whole life to get to this moment and this is how it ends?”

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle paid tribute to Haliburton after Sunday’s game.

“What happened with Tyrese, all of our hearts dropped,” he said. “But he will be back in time, and I believe he’ll make a full recovery.”

Christopher Bonsu Baah nears big-money move to Al Qadsiah https://www.adomonline.com/christopher-bonsu-baah-nears-big-money-move-to-al-qadsiah/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 06:32:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547524 Ghanaian winger Christopher Bonsu Baah is close to finalising a high-profile transfer to Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah FC.

The move is expected to become one of KRC Genk’s most lucrative departures in recent years.

The 20-year-old, who joined the Belgian outfit from Norwegian club Sarpsborg in 2023, has emerged as a prime target for Al Qadsiah.

Negotiations between both parties have reached an advanced stage, with the deal expected to be wrapped up in the coming days.

Though the final transfer fee remains undisclosed, sources suggest Genk will make a significant profit—well above the €5.2 million they initially spent to secure his services.

Bonsu Baah, who is under contract with Genk until 2028, has become a key figure for the club, featuring in 90 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing seven assists.

Reports also hint that the youngster could use the Saudi move as a stepping stone, potentially returning to Europe in the future to continue his development.

Earlier this year, Bonsu Baah made his debut for the Black Stars during the Unity Cup games held in London.

The club parted ways with Ivorian coach Aboubakar Ouattara after the conclusion of the 2024/25 football season, replacing him with Mas-Ud Didi Dramani as part of a new project.

Speaking to Asempa FM, Alhaji Akanbi made it clear that there was mutual understanding between the two parties and that Ouattara was informed and supportive of the decision.

“We’ve sat with him and told him that this is the direction we want to go, and he has agreed. What is the problem here?” Akanbi said.

Dramani is expected to officially assume his duties this week as Hearts intensify preparations for the upcoming 2025 President’s Cup.

Meanwhile, the club is yet to announce a new role or future plans for Ouattara.

From 5 to 26 July 2025, SuperSport on DStv and GOtv proudly brings you the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), live from Morocco.

As Africa’s biggest sports broadcaster, SuperSport is Here for Her—championing the rise of women’s football with unmatched coverage. Expect expert pre-match analysis, dynamic camera angles, engaging post-match banter, insightful talk shows, and world-class commentary that will bring every thrilling moment to life like never before.

Tournament Overview

This will be the 15th edition of WAFCON, officially titled the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2024. It is also marked with a historic milestone as Morocco becomes the first country to host back-to-back editions, following its successful staging of the 2022 tournament. This year, twelve of the continent’s top teams will compete across five cities and six venues: Rabat, Casablanca, Mohammédia, Oujda, and Berkane.

While the tournament will take place in 2025, it retains the 2024 designation in its official title. This is because the competition was originally scheduled for 2024, and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opted to maintain the original naming to preserve alignment with the tournament’s established cycle and branding.

This approach is consistent with international sporting norms, where events are typically named after their intended year rather than the year of execution. The rescheduling was due to logistical and calendar-related adjustments, but the title remains unchanged to ensure continuity in historical records. Similar examples include the UEFA Euro 2020 and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, both of which were held in 2021 but retained their original names.

Defending Champions & Host Ambitions

South Africa enters as defending champions, lifting their first-ever title in 2022 with a 2–1 win over hosts Morocco. Their Banyana Banyana squad, led by head coach Desiree Ellis and goalkeeper Andile Dlamini, is determined to retain the trophy, though Dlamini has cautioned against complacency, reminding her teammates that “anyone is capable of winning this tournament… it depends on who excels on that specific day”.

Meanwhile, Morocco dreams of going one better as hosts. In 2022, they reached the final and set a tournament attendance record with over 50,000 fans in the stands. Central to their hopes is midfield maestro Fatima Tagnaout, the reigning CAF Women’s Inter-Club Player of the Year and a creative force for heavyweight club AS FAR. She’s expected to anchor Morocco’s push.

Group Stage Breakdown

Group A: Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, DR Congo

As hosts, the Atlas Lionesses face a stern test, particularly from Zambia—third-place finishers in 2022 and Olympic qualifiers—along with improving Senegal and a returning DR Congo side.

Group B: Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, Botswana

Africa’s most decorated side, the Super Falcons, will seek a 12th title. Despite a lacklustre 2022 campaign, Nigeria are amongst the outright favourites and comfortably the highest-ranked team in the competition. Tunisia and Algeria have made recent strides, and Botswana could pull off surprises.

Group C: South Africa, Ghana, Mali, Tanzania

Described as the “fireworks group”, this pool promises high drama. Ghana returns after absences, Mali challenges confidently, and Tanzania makes its finals comeback. South Africa are favourites as reigning champs but must be wary.

Top Players & Storylines

  • Barbra Banda (Zambia): A standout attacker and Olympic scorer, Banda poses a constant threat up front.
  • Nigeria’s squad: Anchored by CAF Women’s Player of the Year Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, plus attacking talent such as Asisat Oshoala, the Falcons remain a potent force.
  • Morocco’s strength in depth: Alongside Tagnaout, forward Sanaa Mssoudy and a robust midfield give the Atlas Lionesses home-ground momentum.
  • South Africa’s resilience: With tight, disciplined defending and a growing confidence in their attack, Banyana Banyana have demonstrated they can win gritty matches.

Tournament Format & Stakes

Group winners, runners-up, and the two best third-placed teams will progress to the quarterfinals. The stakes are high—not only WAFCON glory, but also vital momentum building toward the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Key Takeaways

  • Morocco aims to build on home advantage and a star-packed squad.
  • South Africa looks to cement a legacy with back-to-back titles.
  • Nigeria will target redemption after a disappointing showing in 2022.

Herbert Mensah urges GFA to take concrete action against hooliganism https://www.adomonline.com/herbert-mensah-urges-gfa-to-take-concrete-action-against-hooliganism/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 05:15:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547344

Former Asante Kotoko chairman and current President of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah, has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete steps to curb hooliganism in local football.

Mensah’s comments come amid growing concerns over fan violence, which continues to taint the sport in Ghana.

One tragic incident during the just-ended football season led to the death of an Asante Kotoko supporter.

In an interview with Joy Sports for an upcoming documentary titled Scars of Hooliganism, Mensah criticised the GFA for what he described as a lack of meaningful action.

“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) themselves have got to stop talking so much and do more,” he said.

He stressed the importance of adopting effective measures already in use in other footballing nations, noting the critical role of accountability and enforcement.

“[The FA should] put in the same measures that have been put in around the world.

“The clubs have a sense of responsibility — they have to. You see abroad where people receive life bans. There are cameras in place to pick things up,” he added.

Mensah’s call adds to mounting pressure on football authorities in Ghana to address hooliganism with greater urgency and resolve.

The Accra-based giants were sanctioned after failing to comply with a GFA directive to pay $70,000 owed to New Edubiase.

The ban was enforced under Article 15(1)(c) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, following the club’s failure to meet the final payment deadline of May 31, 2025.

The amount includes a $50,000 balance from the transfer of midfielder Salim Adams, along with an additional $20,000 representing 40% of a sell-on clause, as determined by the GFA Players’ Status Committee.

Although both clubs previously met in March 2025 in an attempt to settle the matter amicably, Hearts of Oak reportedly did not fulfill their obligations under the agreement.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Opare Addo acknowledged the club’s failure to meet the deadline but stressed that discussions are ongoing to bring the issue to a close.

“This is an issue that is being resolved, and when it’s eventually resolved, New Edubiase will confirm it,” he revealed.

“The two parties are in constant touch to ensure that the issues are being resolved,” he added.

The former Black Stars assistant coach was named head coach of the Phobians ahead of the 2025/26 football season, signing a two-year contract.

Speaking to Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, Opare Addo disclosed that the club’s hierarchy engaged key stakeholders before finalising the appointment.

“In the wake of Didi Dramani’s appointment, no one has made a negative comment, which means he has the backing of everyone,” he said.

Incidents of fan violence have plagued the sport in recent years, and Nyantakyi believes such behaviour is pushing corporate sponsors away.

Speaking in an upcoming documentary by Joy Sports, the former CAF 1st Vice President stated, “When violence takes centre stage in footballing issues in the country, it drives away sponsors.

“A lot of people don’t want to associate themselves with bad brands tainted with violence and illegality.

“Violence has no place at all in the game,” Nyantakyi added.

The Ghana Premier League has been without a title sponsor since betPawa withdrew its support in November 2023.

The 31-year-old former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper enjoyed a solid campaign in the recently concluded South African Betway Premier League, where he kept nine clean sheets in 22 appearances. His consistent performances earned him the starting role ahead of Veli Mothwa.

In an interview with KICK OFF, Ofori made it clear that stepping away from football is not on his radar anytime soon.

“I’m thinking about it [retirement] in a sense of planning ahead, you know. But not in terms of I’m thinking of retiring soon—no. I think for a goalkeeper, I still have many playing years in me,” he said.

Man Utd make improved £60m bid for striker Mbeumo https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-make-improved-60m-bid-for-striker-mbeumo/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 05:09:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547514 Manchester United have submitted an improved bid of more than £60m for Brentford striker Bryan Mbeumo.

This month United had a bid rejected for the 25-year-old of £45m plus up to £10m in add-ons.

Talks over the Cameroon forward, who would become the club’s second signing of the summer, are due to continue this week.

Following the £62.5m capture of Matheus Cunha from Wolves, United are keen to further strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad before they return for pre-season training on 7 July.

New Tottenham manager Thomas Frank was keen to be reunited with Mbeumo, while there has also been interest in the forward from other Champions League clubs.

Sources have suggested Brentford would want at least the same fee as Wolves have received for Cunha before they agree to the sale of a player who still has a year left on his contract.

As with Cunha, Mbeumo’s Premier League experience is viewed as a major positive as Amorim needs players who can hit the ground running as United look to make a more positive start to the season than their three sluggish efforts under Erik ten Hag.

Mbeumo scored a career-best 20 goals for Brentford last season, while he also contributed nine assists to the Bees’ cause.

An international colleague of United goalkeeper Andre Onana, Mbeumo is likely to miss four weeks of the 2025-26 campaign because of Cameroon’s participation in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Cameroon play Gabon in their opening group game on 24 December.

The renewed move for Mbeumo comes as the future of Alejandro Garnacho is once again the subject of intense debate after he posted an image of himself wearing an Aston Villa shirt with the name ‘Rashford’ on his social media channels.

Fellow United outcast Marcus Rashford responded to the post with a ‘my brother’ message to the Argentina forward, who has been valued at £60m after being told by Amorim to find another club this summer.

Inter Miami set for last 16 showdown with PSG following draw with Palmeiras https://www.adomonline.com/inter-miami-set-for-last-16-showdown-with-psg-following-draw-with-palmeiras/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 05:06:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547510 Javier Mascherano’s side will take on Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup following a 2-2 draw against Palmeiras at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Palmeiras finished as Group A winners and will face fellow Brazilian side Botafogo in the round of 16.

Palmeiras started the match well, looking to play forward quickly and putting the Inter Miami defence under pressure from the first whistle.

The Brazilian outfit continued to launch forward in attack, but it was Inter Miami who struck first, breaking forward quickly on the counter with Luis Suárez cleverly finding Tadeo Allende who burst forward in attack. Palmeiras defender Murilo pulled his hamstring whilst in pursuit of Allende, leaving the Inter man to go one-v-one, and he made no mistake, slotting expertly past Weverton.

Palmeiras continued to push forward, with Abel Ferreira’s side registering 10 shots in the first half, but they found the target with just one of those.

Inter Miami had a huge chance to double their advantage five minutes into the second half, with Suárez once again combining with Allende, the Argentine burst through into the box but this time could only fire his effort wide of the post.

Luis Suárez made it 2-0 to Inter Miami with 66 minutes on the clock with a sensational goal. The Uruguayan collected the ball, held off the challenge of a Palmeiras player and headed for goal, took the ball past Fuchs with ease before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner past Weverton.

Palmeiras pulled one back 10 minutes from time with Paulinho latching onto a brilliant reverse pass from Allan before firing home to give the Brazilian side hope.

Just seven minutes later, Mauricio completed the comeback, lashing home on the half volley, a goal which ensured Palmeiras finished as Group A winners.

Up next for both sides is the round of 16, with Inter Miami going head-to-head with Lionel Messi’s former team Paris Saint-Germain, whereas group winners Palmeiras will face Botafogo.

The European champions win Group B and will play the runners-up of Group A – which is likely to be Palmeiras or Inter Miami.

Their opening goal had a hint of fortune to it with Vitinha’s 20-yard first-time drive heading off target before hitting Khvicha Kvaratskhelia on the back and going in.

They added a second on the counter with Achraf Hakimi slamming in from Bradley Barcola’s pass.

PSG deserved their victory in Seattle with Desire Doue forcing three stops from Sounders keeper Stefan Frei.

The hosts’ best chance came when Gianluigi Donnarumma gave the ball straight to Jesus Ferreira, who shot over from a tight angle.

Botafogo reach last 16 at expense of Atletico Madrid https://www.adomonline.com/botafogo-reach-last-16-at-expense-of-atletico-madrid/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 05:00:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547504 Botafogo booked their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup at the expense of Atletico Madrid, despite a 1-0 defeat by the Spanish side.

Atletico knew they needed to win by a margin of at least three goals to qualify and struggled to break down a resolute Brazilian team for much of the game.

After a first half of limited chances, Atletico manager Diego Simeone opted to introduce veteran striker Antoine Griezmann for the second period in a bid to spark some magic into his team’s attack.

The Frenchman nearly had an immediate impact when he got in down the left but he fired against the post from a tight angle.

Alexander Sorloth, who had the highest xG of any player in the tournament going into the game, headed a glorious chance wide from six yards.

Atletico finally found the net when Griezmann fired home from inside the area in the dying minutes, but it was too little too late.

Botafogo will play the winners of Group A in the last 16, while Simeone’s side are out.

‘Impossible to train’ – Chelsea face record heat in Philadelphia https://www.adomonline.com/impossible-to-train-chelsea-face-record-heat-in-philadelphia/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 04:55:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547501 Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says it is “impossible” to organise normal training sessions amid a “code red” severe heat warning in Philadelphia at the Club World Cup.

The Blues players trained at Subaru Park, the home of local Major League Soccer (MLS) side Philadelphia Union, in 37C.

The 45% humidity means it feels more like 45C, according to accuweather.com, and temperatures on Monday were predicted to top 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8C) for the first time in 13 years.

“This morning’s session has been very, very, very short,” said Maresca, adding that “otherwise you don’t save energy for the game”.

“It’s been just about tomorrow’s game, planning for tomorrow, and that’s it. No more than that,” the Italian added.

“As you can see, it’s not easy in these conditions with these temperatures. We are going to try to do our best.”

The local public authority has warned people in Philadelphia to avoid “work in high-heat environments” and “strenuous physical activity”.

However, some matches at Fifa’s newly expanded tournament have kicked off in the middle of the afternoon, with temperatures at their highest.

“It’s difficult to work with these temperatures but we are here and we trying to do our best and we will try to win tomorrow,” said Maresca.

Similar problems have been faced by other clubs, raising concerns about the United States co-hosting the World Cup at this time next year.

Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac said he was “sweating like I’ve just come out of a sauna” after his side beat Mamelodi Sundowns in 32C heat in Cincinnati on Saturday.

After Atletico Madrid’s 4-0 defeat by Paris St-Germain in 32C in Pasadena, midfielder Marcos Llorente said it was “terribly hot” and added “my toes were sore, my nails were hurting – it’s incredible”.

Chelsea are under pressure for their final Group D match against Tunisia’s ES Tunis after losing 3-1 to Brazilian club Flamengo last time round.

The Blues need to avoid defeat to qualify as runners-up, which would secure a last-16 tie against Bayern Munich, Benfica or Boca Juniors.

Captain Reece James is a doubt because he is “ill” and Nicolas Jackson is suspended after his red card last week and was left out of the open training session on Monday.

How are Chelsea fighting the heat?

Chelsea’s players had what was described as a “very short” training session at Subaru Park as medical staff watched on.

There were crates of iced water bottles around the pitch and drinks offered at every opportunity in between drills.

Huge fans were placed on the sides of the pitch, blowing water spray at the players, and they trained in the only partially shaded area of the open stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia.

When asked about the conditions, defender Marc Cucurella said: “It takes some getting used to, and it’s true we played a lot of games last season, but we know we have a job to do here, and we want to go far in the tournament.”

Black Satellites assistant coach anticipates tough challenge in WAFU U-20 tournament https://www.adomonline.com/black-satellites-assistant-coach-anticipates-tough-challenge-in-wafu-u-20-tournament/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 12:09:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547326 The Black Satellites’ assistant coach, Fatawu Salifu, has warned of a difficult challenge ahead as Ghana gears up for the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations, set to take place from July 10 to 23, 2025.

Ghana has been drawn into Group A alongside regional rivals Nigeria and Benin.

Speaking to the Ghana Football Association’s media team, Salifu acknowledged the strength of the group and the intensity of the upcoming matches.

“We have been waiting keenly to see which countries we would face in the group stage, and just today, we got the information that the draw has been done — and we got Nigeria and Benin in our group,” the former Heart of Lions coach said.

“Which I think is a typical WAFU group. When Ghana and Nigeria are in the same group, we normally expect a very tough competition.

“So, Ghana, Benin and Nigeria — I think it’s a very good group, and of course, all we have to do is to beat these two countries and qualify.”

Following their recent elimination from the U-20 AFCON qualifiers after a quarter-final loss to Egypt, Salifu said the team is focused on bouncing back.

“After exiting Egypt, we returned home and came straight into camp. We have a tournament at hand, and we believe it’s time to redeem our image,” he added.

WAFU U-20: We’ll redeem ourselves after World Cup miss – Black Satellites coach https://www.adomonline.com/wafu-u-20-well-redeem-ourselves-after-world-cup-miss-black-satellites-coach/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 11:39:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547307 Assistant coach of the Black Satellites, Fatawu Salifu, has expressed the team’s strong determination to restore their reputation following their failure to qualify for the U-20 World Cup.

Ghana’s U-20 side saw their World Cup hopes dashed after a penalty shootout loss to Egypt in the quarterfinals of the recent qualifying tournament.

However, as they prepare for the upcoming U-20 WAFU Championship, Salifu emphasized the team’s commitment to making their supporters proud.

“Right before we returned from Egypt and after not qualifying for the World Cup, we got the information that we are going to play in the WAFU Cup, which is going to be in Ghana. We believe that we are back to redeem our image after exiting from the tournament in Egypt,” the former Heart of Lions coach told the Ghana FA website.

The Black Satellites will kick off their WAFU campaign against long-time rivals Nigeria on July 10, 2025, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram. They will then face Benin on July 16 to complete their group stage matches.

Group A consists of only three teams, with each team scheduled to play two games.

The third edition of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Cup of Nations is set to take place in Ghana from July 10 to 23, 2025.

Black Queens coach hints at squad changes ahead of WAFCON https://www.adomonline.com/black-queens-coach-hints-at-squad-changes-ahead-of-wafcon/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 11:10:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547269 Black Queens coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren has hinted at possible squad changes in the upcoming friendly matches as part of preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

This follows Ghana’s impressive 3-0 win over Malawi in their opening warm-up fixture on Saturday.

Several players are yet to join camp due to ongoing club commitments, but that is expected to change by June 23—the official deadline for player release for international competitions.

Speaking after the victory, Bjorkegren noted that the incoming players will increase competition for places and could lead to lineup changes in the next games.

“We are still missing a few players who are with club teams… there will be another six or seven players to add to this squad, so there will potentially be some rotations in the future. But our strength is that we have so many good players that we can change two or three and still keep the quality,” he said.

The Black Queens are scheduled to face Benin on Wednesday before wrapping up their pre-tournament fixtures with a match against Nigeria.

Ghana is aiming to make a strong impression at the tournament, having missed out on the last two editions since their last appearance in 2018.

Papa Myxtro: The intriguing story of footballer turned broadcaster https://www.adomonline.com/papa-myxtro-the-intriguing-story-of-footballer-turned-broadcaster/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 11:03:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547266 When Obeng Kwaku Andy, popularly known as Papa Myxtro, takes his seat behind the microphone each weekday on Asempa FM, the entire country tunes in.

Myxtro orchestrates Ghana’s most-listened-to sports program, the Ultimate Sports Show, with the rhythm of a former footballer and the voice of a born broadcaster.

But long before he started captivating radio audiences, Papa Myxtro was wearing captain’s armbands, calling the shots not from a radio studio, but from the centre of the pitch.

Papa Myxtro’s journey into the world of sports wasn’t launched with a mic; it began with a ball.

A gifted midfielder, he played for King Faisal and Asante Kotoko, two of Ghana’s most storied football clubs.

His leadership qualities soon took centre stage as he captained the University of Cape Coast (UCC) football team and went on to lead the Ghana National University Team at both the World and African University Games.

This competitive spirit, combined with sharp communication skills, would later fuel his rise in the media industry.

Papa Myxtro’s first professional taste of media came at Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), where he began learning the ropes of broadcast journalism.

With time, passion, and relentless drive, he moved through the ranks, holding roles at FOX FM, ATL FM, and Hot FM before finally landing at Asempa FM – the Mecca of Akan sports radio.

Today, he stands as the host of Ghana’s biggest sports show, Ultimate Sports Show, delivering top-notch commentary, interviews, breaking sports news, and razor-sharp analysis every Monday to Friday.

In 2024, Forklex crowned Papa Myxtro as Best Sports Show Host of the Year, an accolade that confirms what his loyal listeners have known all along: that he’s not just good at what he does, he’s the best.

His background as a professional footballer gives him a rare edge as he speaks not only from research but from experience.

Whether he’s breaking down tactics, critiquing performances, or debating VAR calls, Papa Myxtro’s voice carries both insight and authority.

At the heart of Papa Myxtro’s craft is a deeply held value: objectivity.

For him, sports journalism is not about hype or hero-worship. It’s about honesty, clarity, and accountability; serving both the audience and the employer with respect and diligence.

His goal? To inform, entertain, and empower, while ensuring every listener walks away with something valuable —whether it’s a laugh, a statistic, or a strong opinion.

More than just a voice, Papa Myxtro maintains close contact with his audience through WhatsApp and social media platforms.

He listens as much as he speaks. His influence extends beyond the radio dial, often inspiring others with his story of transition from the football pitch to the broadcast studio, from tackles to talk time.

He is particularly passionate about helping others overcome challenges, drawing from his own experience of climbing the ranks against the odds.

Papa Myxtro’s mission is simple yet powerful: “Keep getting better.” He’s on a continuous journey to elevate the Ultimate Sports Show, ensuring it stays relevant, exciting, and informative.

His vision for Ghanaian broadcasting is full of hope; a future where media is fast, fact-based, and impactful.

And as Tiger Woods once said – Myxtro’s favourite quote – “I love to compete. That’s the essence of who I am.”

It’s a mantra that keeps Papa Myxtro sharp, focused, and always ready to deliver.

“To my cherished listeners, I hold you in the highest regard. Every time I sit behind the mic, it’s to give you my very best. Thank you for walking this journey with me—I’ll keep earning your trust, one show at a time.”

Obeng Kwaku Andy, aka Papa Myxtro – from midfield passes to powerful broadcasts, he’s still running the game even if it’s on a different field.

Zimbabwe’s Kirsty Coventry officially takes over as IOC President https://www.adomonline.com/zimbabwes-kirsty-coventry-officially-takes-over-as-ioc-president/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 10:20:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547414 Former Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry took over the leadership of the International Olympic Committee from Thomas Bach in a ceremony on Monday with the 2028 Los Angeles Games already threatening to fill her in-tray to overflowing.

Coventry, who starts her eight-year spell officially on Tuesday as the most powerful sports administrator in the world, became the first woman and first African to be elected head of the Olympic ruling body in March.

Much of the discussion during campaigning focused on the IOC’s need for change in its marketing strategies with several top Olympic sponsors having left in the past 12 months.

However, with Los Angeles hit by protests against immigration raids, and relations tense between state and city officials, and the U.S. government, the 2028 Games have become the major talking point in the movement that would ordinarily be focusing on next year’s Milano-Cortina Winter Games.

Coventry has long-standing ties with the United States, dating back to her time as a leading swimmer at Auburn University in Alabama. That will prove useful ahead of LA 2028, and she has said she will seek to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the Games.

Coventry will also need to find time to help secure the long-term finances of the movement. The IOC, which generates billions of dollars in revenues each year in sponsorship and broadcasting deals for the Olympics, has secured $7.3 billion for 2025-28 and $6.2 billion for 2029-2032. More contracts are expected for both periods.

COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Coventry is also expected to continue the IOC’s plans to expand commercial opportunities for sponsors at the Olympics with the organisation’s finances in a robust state and the privately-funded LA Olympics a good place to start.

Coventry needed only one round of voting to clinch the race to succeed Bach, beating six other candidates, making history for the African continent, with the IOC having been ruled for 131 years by European or North American men.

Her background and being the first female president will be assets in a diverse IOC membership and the international makeup of Olympic stakeholders.

On Monday she was handed the golden key to the IOC by Bach, who was the organisation’s president for 12 years.

“I am really honoured I get to walk this journey with you. I cannot wait for anything that lies ahead,” Coventry said in her address to IOC members and other Olympic stakeholders.

“I know I have the best team to support me and our movement over the next eight years.”

Coventry will hold a two-day workshop this week to get feedback from members on key IOC issues.

“Working together and consistently finding ways to strengthen and keep united our movement that will ensure that we wake up daily… to continue to inspire,” she said.

A seven-times Olympic medallist, Coventry won 200m backstroke gold at the 2004 Athens Games and in Beijing four years later.

“With her election, you have also sent a powerful message to the world: the IOC continues to evolve,” Bach said in his speech. “With Kirsty Coventry, the Olympic movement will be in the best of hands.”

Black Queens could have scored more against Malawi – Coach Bjorkegren https://www.adomonline.com/black-queens-could-have-scored-more-against-malawi-coach-bjorkegren/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 07:07:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547093 Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren believes his side could have secured a more emphatic victory in their 3-1 win over Malawi in a pre-2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) friendly on Saturday evening.

The match, played at the Ziaida Complex in Morocco, marked Ghana’s first win in four games as the team continues preparations for the continental tournament.

Speaking after the game, Bjorkegren praised his team’s overall performance but expressed disappointment over their lack of efficiency in front of goal.

“The start was probably a little bit slow, but otherwise, we were the better team the whole game,” he said.
“We produced so many chances. We won the game 3-1, but if you are looking at the chances, we could have scored probably six, seven today. But the most important thing is to win.”

The Black Queens will play Benin on Wednesday in their second warm-up match, before wrapping up their preparatory campaign with a high-profile encounter against Nigeria.

Ghana has been drawn in Group C at the 2024 WAFCON, where they will face reigning champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali.

Legon Cities handed transfer ban over GH¢29,000 debt to former player https://www.adomonline.com/legon-cities-handed-transfer-ban-over-gh%c2%a229000-debt-to-former-player/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 06:38:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547089 The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has imposed a transfer ban on Legon Cities Football Club after the club failed to comply with a payment plan ordered by the GFA’s Players’ Status Committee (PSC) and enforced by the Disciplinary Committee.

The case, dating back to October 2021, involves unpaid entitlements owed to former player Francis Nuer Addo. The Disciplinary Committee ruled that the club must pay GH¢29,000 in outstanding salaries and benefits, covering the period between October 2021 and October 2022.

Despite several reminders and an extended payment schedule, Legon Cities defaulted on the agreed instalments, missing deadlines in December 2024, January 2025, and February 2025.

As a result, the club was fined GH¢5,000, and a transfer ban came into effect after the final deadline of February 23, 2025.

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee ruling stated:

“Pursuant to Article 15(1)(a) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, Legon Cities FC is hereby fined an amount of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢5,000.00) for failing to comply with the Players’ Status Committee’s decision. This fine is payable on or before Friday, December 6, 2024.

“Pursuant to Article 15(1)(b), Legon Cities FC is given a final deadline to pay the full amount of GH¢29,000.00 in three instalments:
i. GH¢10,000.00 by December 23, 2024
ii. GH¢10,000.00 by January 23, 2025
iii. GH¢9,000.00 by February 23, 2025

“Pursuant to Article 15(1)(c), if the club fails to comply with the above decisions, the following automatic sanctions shall apply:
i. A deduction of three points for every league or FA Cup match played while the debt remains unpaid
ii. A transfer ban (domestic and international) from the opening of the 2025/26 player transfer window.”

The committee further warned that under Article 15(2), the GFA and all its departments would be obligated to enforce the sanctions automatically.

Despite these warnings, Legon Cities failed to meet the payment deadlines. Consequently, the transfer ban has been triggered for the 2025/26 season, barring the club from registering new players until the debt is fully settled.

The regulations also state that the club should have forfeited all league and FA Cup matches played after February 23, 2025. However, this was not enforced.

Former player Francis Nuer Addo, who initiated the enforcement process through the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), has expressed disappointment at the GFA’s delay in applying the sanctions.

In a letter dated June 19, 2025, addressed to the GFA, Addo accused the association of selective enforcement, citing the prompt sanctions issued against Nsoatreman FC in a similar case.

“Pursuant to Article 15(2) of the GFA Disciplinary Code (2019), which requires the creditor to request the commencement of applicable sanctions, I did so by a letter dated 14th April 2025 and delivered on 15th April 2025,” he wrote.

“Respectfully, to date, you have not dignified my request with any administrative response, let alone shown by deed and fact that the said automatic sanction is applicable since 23rd February 2025.”

Addo argued that the failure to apply the sanctions compromises the integrity of the Ghana Premier League and undermines trust in the GFA’s judicial bodies. He also warned that the inaction could deter potential sponsors and investors.

He further raised concerns about the potential impact on players who may unknowingly sign contracts with Legon Cities despite the transfer ban.

“The league table must be revised to reflect the forfeiture of matches as provided by the regulations,” Addo demanded. “The GFA must also publish the list of all clubs under transfer bans to protect the interest of players.”

He called on the Ministry of Sports, the National Sports Authority, and the media to intervene and demand transparency in the enforcement of football regulations.

As it stands, Legon Cities are officially barred from registering players for the 2025/26 season until the GH¢29,000 owed to Nuer Addo is fully paid.

The club was relegated to Division One at the end of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season.

Hearts of Oak handed transfer ban over $70,000 debt to New Edubiase https://www.adomonline.com/hearts-of-oak-handed-transfer-ban-over-70000-debt-to-new-edubiase/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 06:32:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547085 Accra Hearts of Oak has been placed under a transfer ban by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following the club’s failure to comply with a directive to pay $70,000 to New Edubiase United FC.

The ban, in accordance with Article 15(1)(c) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, took effect after the Phobians missed the final deadline of 31st May 2025 to settle the amount.

The payment stems from a decision by the GFA Players’ Status Committee, which ordered Hearts of Oak to pay New Edubiase $50,000 as the outstanding balance on the transfer of midfielder Salim Adams, along with an additional $20,000 representing 40 percent of an onward transfer fee.

Although both clubs met in March 2025 to resolve the matter amicably, Hearts of Oak reportedly failed to honour their side of the agreement.

Sources told JoySports that the Phobians had pleaded with New Edubiase to write off the debt, citing a failed transfer of Salim Adams to FC Cincinnati, which significantly affected expected earnings.

The club was expected to make nearly $1 million from the player’s transfer, but Adams failed to meet the performance threshold abroad and returned to Ghana.

Hearts of Oak had earlier agreed to pay $120,000 for permanently signing Adams but only paid $50,000.

Despite New Edubiase initially agreeing in principle to waive the balance due to the failed transfer, they claim Hearts of Oak did not follow through on conditions tied to that concession, prompting their insistence on the full $70,000 payment.

Consequently, the GFA Disciplinary Committee, in a ruling dated 8th May 2025, fined the club GH¢5,000 and gave it until the end of May to pay the debt in full or face sanctions—including the now-active transfer ban.

Decision of the GFA Disciplinary Committee on Hearts of Oak

Portions of the decision sighted by JoySports’ Muftawu Nabila Abdulai said Hearts of Oak would face a transfer ban if they failed to settle the debt.

Pursuant to Article 15(1)(c) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, the decision stated that the club shall suffer a transfer ban—both domestic and international—until full payment is made, should Accra Hearts of Oak SC fail to comply with the stated directives by the given deadline.

It added that in accordance with Article 15(2) of the Code, Hearts of Oak was warned to strictly comply with the decision, failing which the sanctions mentioned would be applied automatically by the GFA, its departments, and affiliated bodies.

On 13th June 2025, New Edubiase United formally wrote to the General Secretary of the GFA confirming that Hearts of Oak remained in continuous default beyond the 31st May deadline.

In the letter, the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Alex Ackumey, referenced Decision No. 4 of the Disciplinary Committee’s ruling and noted that the sanction under Article 15(1)(c) had become automatically applicable due to Hearts of Oak’s persistent default.

New Edubiase United letter to the GFA

The letter read that Hearts of Oak was still in continuous default, and therefore, the specified sanction was in effect. The club added that it deemed it necessary to notify the GFA of this development as per the administrative provisions of the ruling.

Sources claim Hearts of Oak contacted Edubiase about a week ago to inform them that a $20,000 cheque was ready, but the club declined it.

Under the GFA’s disciplinary regulations, the transfer ban prevents Hearts of Oak from registering new players both locally and internationally until the full amount is paid.

The regulations also permit further sanctions, including points deduction or relegation, should the club continue to default.

Thunder win the NBA championship after defeating Pacers in winner-take-all Game 7 https://www.adomonline.com/thunder-win-the-nba-championship-after-defeating-pacers-in-winner-take-all-game-7/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 05:46:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547082 The Oklahoma City Thunder Sunday night finished what they started back in late October, and put the rest of the NBA on notice that there’s a new sheriff in town.

With an average age under 26, the Thunder capped off one of the winningest seasons in league history with a seven-game triumph over a pesky Indiana Pacers team to win the Larry O’Brien trophy.

It was a tight affair in the early-going, indicative of the back-and-forth nature of the entire series, and then disaster struck for Indiana.

Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who had been instrumental in a string of incredible comeback wins for the Pacers this postseason, went down with a non-contact injury to his lower right leg. He writhed in pain, slapping the floor in a mixture of frustration, heartbreak and physical discomfort. His father later confirmed to broadcaster ESPN what many had suspected – it was an Achilles injury for the 25-year-old.

With every excuse to throw in the towel, the Pacers instead rallied around their injured leader. Keyed by Eastern Conference Finals MVP Pascal Siakam and a hard-nosed defense, Indiana took a surprising 48-47 lead into halftime.

As the adrenaline began to wear off, the Thunder started to impose their will in the third quarter of the game.

In the blink of an eye, the game went from tied at 56-56 to a nine-point OKC lead after three consecutive long range shots from the Thunder’s “Big 3” – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams.

The Thunder never looked back from that point.

OKC, which boasted the league’s best defense in the regular season, began swarming all over the short-handed Pacers. The Thunder held Indiana scoreless for the first 4:31 of the fourth quarter as Oklahoma City’s lead grew to 22 points.

The Pacers showed their trademark determination and never quit, trimming the deficit down to 10 points with two-and-a-half minutes left.

But without their late-game hero Haliburton, the mountain was just too steep for the Pacers, and the Thunder ultimately won the game 103-91.

The Thunder’s centerpiece, Gilgeous-Alexander had a game-high 29 points and earned Finals MVP honors, becoming the first player since LeBron James in 2013 to earn both regular season and Finals MVP awards. SGA also became just the fourth player in NBA history to win the league MVP trophy, the scoring title and win the Finals, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal.

After looking listless at halftime, the Thunder closed their season in the same fashion that they had been playing since October: Intense defense, lightning quick runs and leaning on Gilgeous-Alexander’s near-perfect basketball to take home the title.

NBA star Durant to join Rockets in blockbuster trade https://www.adomonline.com/nba-star-durant-to-join-rockets-in-blockbuster-trade/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 05:41:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547078 Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant will join the Houston Rockets in a blockbuster move from the Phoenix Suns.

The 36-year-old forward will join the Rockets at the start of July in a deal involving eight other players.

In exchange, guard Jalen Green and small forward Dillon Brooks will move to Phoenix – who will also gain the 10th pick in Wednesday’s NBA Draft and five future second-round picks, according to reports in US media.

Speaking at a media event in New York on Sunday Durant told reporter Kay Adams: “Being part of the Houston Rockets, I’m looking forward to it.

“Crazy, crazy last couple weeks, but I’m glad it’s over with.

“They had a great season last year. Love their leadership. I felt like I’d be a good addition.”

Durant is a four-time Olympic champion with the United States and was the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2014.

Last season the Suns could only finish 11th in the Western Conference, with Durant averaging 26.6 points, six rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.2 blocked shots a game.

The Rockets finished second in the Western Conference but were knocked out of the play-offs in the first round.

They are coached by Ime Udoka, who signed a long-term deal last week to remain as Houston’s coach. Durant and Udoka previously worked together with the Brooklyn Nets and on the US Olympic squad.

Durant is the seventh highest-scoring player in NBA history and won his two NBA titles with the Golden State Warriors in 2017 and 2018, taking the NBA Finals MVP award on both occasions.
