The four-time African champions are set to compete in the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England, 2018 finalists Croatia, and Panama.

“Don’t worry, the Black Stars will perform at the 2026 World Cup,” Owusu-Abeyie, who made 18 appearances, told Adom FM’s Nana Osei Ampofo Adjei in the Netherlands.

Ghana will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and close the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

This marks the nation’s fifth World Cup appearance, following tournaments in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022. Their best showing came in 2010, when they reached the quarterfinals.

In preparation for the global event, the Ghana Football Association has arranged four high-profile friendlies.

The build-up begins on March 27 with a clash against Austria at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, followed by a trip to Stuttgart to face Germany at the MHP Arena on March 30.

Head coach Otto Addo will then lead the team in a warm-up match against Mexico in May before concluding preparations with a historic first encounter against Wales on June 2 at Cardiff City Stadium.

The Black Stars enter the tournament determined to make a mark and build on their previous World Cup successes.

It’s disappointing we are not winning our home games – Kotoko interim coach https://www.adomonline.com/its-disappointing-we-are-not-winning-our-home-games-kotoko-interim-coach/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 18:44:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638050 Interim Asante Kotoko coach Prince Yaw Owusu has expressed his frustration over the team’s struggles to secure wins at home, a situation he says is letting down their supporters.

The Porcupine Warriors were held to a goalless draw by a 10-man Vision FC in last weekend’s Matchday 24 fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium, leaving fans visibly disappointed.

Ahead of their upcoming Matchday 25 clash against Karela United this weekend, Yaw Owusu reflected on the points dropped on home soil.

“It’s not easy at all. A lot of thinking about what’s going on, what is happening, why Kumasi, all those things cross my mind,” he told the club’s media.

“It hurts a lot because my fans are also in Kumasi, and this is where we have to satisfy them, and it’s not happening. It’s very difficult for us,” Yaw Owusu added.

The match, which is scheduled to be staged at the Aliu Mahama Stadium, is set to kick off at 15:00 GMT.

We must respond positively against Basake Holy Stars – Hearts of Oak coach Didi Dramani https://www.adomonline.com/we-must-respond-positively-against-basake-holy-stars-hearts-of-oak-coach-didi-dramani/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 18:30:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638047 Hearts of Oak head coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani has urged his team to stay focused ahead of their Matchday 25 encounter with Basake Holy Stars, emphasising the need for a strong response following last week’s setback.

The Phobian Club comes into the game after a 2-1 loss to Bibiani GoldStars, a result that Dramani says the team is determined to bounce back from.

Speaking ahead of the clash at the University of Ghana Stadium, Dramani highlighted the danger posed by Basake’s wingers, Prince Tweneboah and Gideon Quaison.

“It’s a very strong side. They play through very good wingers in the persons of Prince Tweneboah and Gideon Quaison, and they are very direct,” Dramani said.

“They try to put balls in the box, crosses, and so all that we need to do is to try to shut them off. We need to respond positively in that game,” he added.

The match is set to kick off at 15:00 GMT.

Black Queens crowned champions of Pink Ladies Cup tournament https://www.adomonline.com/black-queens-crowned-champions-of-pink-ladies-cup-tournament/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 15:44:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637963 Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, have been crowned champions of the 2026 Pink Ladies Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The tournament’s final match between Ghana and Tanzania was called off due to the ongoing unrest in the Middle East, leaving the Black Queens at the top of the standings and confirming them as winners of the competition.

Ghana began their campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 4-0 victory over Hong Kong. Princess Marfo, Doris Boaduwaa, Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Ajegipena Zakaria all found the net in a dominant opening performance.

The Queens followed it up with another emphatic display, thrashing Russia 4-0 in their second game. Doris Boaduwaa scored twice, while Stella Nyamekye and Ajegipena Zakaria also got on the scoresheet.

Those two convincing wins placed head coach Kim Lars Björkegren’s side firmly in pole position for the title, especially considering the results involving the other teams in the four-nation tournament.

Boaduwaa’s standout performance earned her the Golden Boot after scoring three goals in the competition.

Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan Findib was also recognised for her contribution, winning the Golden Glove after keeping clean sheets in both matches.

The team is expected to break camp in the coming days and return to their respective clubs following the postponement of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which has been moved from March 17 to July 25.

The four-time African champions have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team, setting up a challenging route to the knockout stage.

A New Dawn: Formula One charges into an unpredictable 2026 https://www.adomonline.com/a-new-dawn-formula-one-charges-into-an-unpredictable-2026/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 08:58:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637894 Formula One begins its 77th World Championship with a sense of genuine mystery as the 2026 season launches in March, ushering in a bold new regulatory era that promises to scramble the competitive order. With revised power unit configurations, new active aerodynamics and fresh technical philosophies across the grid, the opening races in Australia, China and Japan feel less like a continuation of last season and more like the start of a brand-new story.

The season gets underway at Melbourne’s Albert Park with the Australian Grand Prix on 8 March, a circuit that has often delivered drama, surprise podiums and early clues about which teams have adapted quickest. This time, however, even those clues may be misleading. With regulations reset, testing data limited and design concepts diverging wildly, the first race weekend is likely to raise as many questions as it answers.

Reigning Drivers’ Champion Lando Norris arrives carrying the weight of expectation after a breakthrough 2025 campaign, while McLaren-Mercedes will defend their Constructors’ crown knowing that past success offers no guarantees under new rules. The chasing pack, meanwhile, smells opportunity. In a season where the margins could be razor-thin and development curves steep, early momentum could prove priceless.

From Melbourne, Formula One heads to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix on 15 March, a circuit that rewards aerodynamic efficiency, tyre management and straight-line speed — all areas directly influenced by the new regulations. With active aerodynamics in play, teams will be eager to see how their concepts perform over a full race distance, particularly in varying track conditions. Shanghai could be the first venue where a surprise frontrunner truly announces itself.

The March triple-header concludes at Suzuka with the Japanese Grand Prix on 29 March, a circuit revered by drivers and engineers alike. Its high-speed esses, precision-demanding corners and relentless rhythm make it an ideal test of balance and confidence. If a team leaves Suzuka on top, they will do so knowing their car is competitive across a wide range of challenges.

Beyond the on-track action, 2026 marks a seismic shift off it. Audi enters the sport as a full works team after acquiring Sauber, bringing its own power unit and long-term ambition. Cadillac makes its long-anticipated Formula One debut using Ferrari power units, expanding the grid to 11 teams for the first time since 2016. Honda, through Honda Racing Corporation, forges a new exclusive works partnership with Aston Martin, while Ford returns to Formula One for the first time since 2004, supporting Red Bull Powertrains in supplying Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls. Renault, meanwhile, steps away from engine supply as Alpine switches to Mercedes power units.

With so many moving parts, predicting early frontrunners feels almost impossible. What is certain is that March will set the tone for a season defined by innovation, risk-taking and relentless evolution. Formula One has pressed the reset button — and the race to define a new era begins now.

Sanchez disappointed but Rosenior want competition https://www.adomonline.com/sanchez-disappointed-but-rosenior-want-competition/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 08:53:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638041 Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior says goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was “really disappointed” to be left out of Wednesday’s match against Aston Villa, but stressed he does not have an established number one.

Spain international Sanchez was criticised for both his distribution and errors at set-pieces during Sunday’s 2-1 defeat at leaders Arsenal.

Rosenior brought in Denmark’s Filip Jorgensen – Sanchez’s long-term understudy – for the 4-1 victory at Villa Park.

“I’ve been really honest with Rob,” he said. “He was really disappointed not to play, which is what I expect from every player, whether they’re a goalkeeper or an outfield player.

“But the way Rob responded in training, the way he supported Filip – in the warm-up, in the dressing room – was magnificent.”

Chelsea have a long-term strategy of encouraging squad rotation, and Rosenior intends to apply that principle to his goalkeepers too.

“For me, genuinely, I look at the goalkeeper position differently for each game,” he said. “I want there to be competition in every area of the pitch.

“I know, traditionally, if there’s a change of goalkeeper, people assume he’s now the number one. That’s not the case. We will pick – and I will pick – the best team for each game.

“Filip hasn’t been waiting – he’s been working for his opportunity. I thought he took it really, really well. But Rob has put in great performances as well.”

Rosenior was asked whether goalkeepers need continuity and whether rotation could therefore be counterproductive.

“Yes, you need continuity – but you also need to win football matches,” he said. “There are different approaches – modern or old‑school.

“I will pick the team I think is best to win each game. I don’t think I’ve kept the same XI once since I’ve been here. People can say you need continuity – if we lose, it’s because we didn’t have enough; if we win, it’s the right decision.

“I made a decision for the Aston Villa game that I think was proven correct. Hopefully, I’ll make more correct decisions moving forward.”

Chelsea face Wrexham in the FA Cup fifth round at 17:45 GMT on Saturday.

Walid Regragui: Morocco coach departs as Mohamed Ouahbi takes charge https://www.adomonline.com/walid-regragui-morocco-coach-departs-as-mohamed-ouahbi-takes-charge/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 08:46:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637887 Morocco have parted company with head coach Walid Regragui less than four months before the World Cup finals.

The 50-year-old led the Atlas Lions to the semi-finals at the Qatar 2022 tournament – making history as the first African side to progress to the last four of the finals.

Mohamed Ouahbi, 49, has stepped up from the under-23 side to be the new head coach in a move that mirrors Regragui taking charge in August 2022, just three months before that World Cup.

A statement said: “This is not simply a change. The objective is to ensure the continuous development of Moroccan football through a structured roadmap.”

Morocco also reached the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final on home soil, but lost 1-0 to Senegal after extra time in a dramatic match in which their opponents temporarily refused to play after the hosts were awarded a stoppage-time penalty that was subsequently missed by Brahim Diaz.

“The team needs a fresh face, a different energy, and a new perspective with a new coach,” added Regragui.

“I think the team needs a new lease of life before the World Cup, a new vision to continue progressing. My decision to leave is part of this team’s evolution.”

He had been under intense pressure to deliver a first continental title since 1976, and speculation had been gathering in recent weeks that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) were set to make a change.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi said on social media how Regragui “left an unforgettable mark on the history of Moroccan football”.

Morocco open their World Cup campaign against five-time champions Brazil on 13 June.

The North Africans will also face Scotland and Haiti in Group C of the tournament, which will be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The Atlas Lions meet Ecuador and Paraguay in friendly matches during next month’s international window.

How relegation could cost Spurs more than £250m https://www.adomonline.com/how-relegation-could-cost-spurs-more-than-250m/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 08:41:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637884 The prospect of one of the Premier League’s six wealthiest clubs being relegated to the Championship should be essentially impossible, given the immense resouces they have at their disposal.

But with nine games left to play Tottenham Hotspur are just a point above 18th-placed West Ham, and in the kind of wretched run of form that makes it difficult to see where enough points are going to come from.

With Wolves and Burnley almost certainly set to occupy the bottom two places at the end of the season, and the likes of the Hammers, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds still at risk too, Spurs are by no means favourites for the drop.

But they are now at enormous risk.

So, what would be the financial impact on Spurs if the unthinkable really does happen?

How would Spurs’ income be impacted?

Spurs earned £690m worth of income last year, according to data from the Uefa European club finance and investment landscape report, putting them ninth overall in Europe.

That income would take a serious hit if they were to drop into the Championship.

According to BBC Sport analysis, the reduction could be as much as £261m overall.

One key area in which they would be harmed is ticket revenue, which earned the club £130m, the fifth-highest across the continent.

Currently, Spurs charge an average of £76 per fan for each home match, with only five clubs in Europe costing more.

Since building their new stadium for around £1bn, Spurs have focused heavily on selling hospitality tickets and corporate packages for matches in order to maximise matchday takings.

But they will simply not be able to charge the same amount for an opening day fixture against a side like Lincoln City – who are currently chasing promotion from League One – in the second tier in August, should they ultimately finish in the bottom three, and a drop in attendances would likely occur too.

Elsewhere, Spurs’ broadcast revenue would plummet too. They would no longer have access to the funds generated from the Premier League’s lucrative domestic and international broadcast deals, which last year meant Ipswich Town earned more in broadcast revenue than Barcelona.

And the tens of millions they earn from Champions League TV income will drop to nothing, unless they manage to win the tournament, which would guarantee them a place in next year’s competition even if they are playing second-tier football.

Furthermore, the club-record £269m of commercial income Spurs earned last year would likely take significant damage.

Sponsorships such as kit manufacturer Nike and front-of-shirt sponsors AIA’s deals (worth around £70m combined annually) will have their values slashed thanks to relegation clauses.

Playing four more home matches in the Championship could also have an impact on Spurs’ ability to host other lucrative events and concerts, which the club has heavily focused on.

“For a club of Spurs’ ambitions and financial scale, relegation would not simply be a short-term sporting setback”, says football finance expert Kieran Maguire. “The economics of English football make recovery a multi-year project.”

Expenses wouldn’t drop enough to make up the difference

Spurs lost £129m last year, according to the data, and the risk of even greater losses going forward if relegated is evident.

In some regards, Spurs’ expenses would be reduced by dropping to the Championship. It has been widely reported, for example, that their players’ contracts include a clause dropping their salaries by 50% in case of relegation.

If that clause is inserted into the contract of every player in the squad, then last year’s record wage bill of £276m could be turned into £138m when the contractual period ticks over to the new season on 1 July.

But in a variety of other ways outgoings would remain the same, and potentially even rise.

One of the major financial issues clubs across the continent have been facing in recent years is rising operational costs, including things like utilities, transport, insurance, marketing, and administration.

Last year, Spurs had the third-highest operating costs in all of Europe, paying out £260m. That was a rise of £27m on the previous year, and the figure could rise again if essentials like energy prices continue to increase in the wider global economy.

Many of those day-to-day operating bills won’t simply be reduced by playing at a lower level – the price for powering the stadium for a night match against Norwich City in the Championship is the same as doing so for Newcastle in the Premier League.

Spurs also had 877 full-time employees last year, an increase of 57 on the previous year, giving them the 12th-biggest workforce in Europe.

Barring a cull of that workforce, Spurs will have to keep paying top-tier European salaries while not even playing in the English top flight.

‘Spurs should have taken more financial risks’

In recent years Spurs have been simultaneously lauded for being one of the most sustainably-run clubs in Europe, while also drawing criticism from fans for not using more of their revenue to pay higher wages.

Some believe that the financial peril that plummeting to the Championship would bring is partly due to a reluctance to take financial risks in recent years.

“I would say money,” ex-Spurs winger Gareth Bale told The Overlap podcast when asked why the club finds itself at such great risk of relegation.

“Look at the wage bill – it’s lower [than other clubs with big ambitions].

“They always seem to buy young and hope they’re going to grow into something bigger, which has worked in the past with me and a few other players, but they’re an established club now.

“They have the stadium, they have the training ground, they have the fan base. They need to be buying bigger players, maybe paying a bit more. It’s that bit of a gamble that you maybe need to take that, from a business point of view, they’re not willing to do.

“For me that’s probably the biggest issue – they don’t sign the finished player.

“A £50 million player is not what it used to be. You have to be spending £80m, £90m, £100m now just to get a good player.

“It’s like they just need to gamble a bit more, other clubs are more willing to take a risk financially.”

Forest tell Edu to stay away from training ground https://www.adomonline.com/forest-tell-edu-to-stay-away-from-training-ground/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 08:36:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637881 Nottingham Forest’s global head of football Edu has been asked to stay away from the club’s training ground amid mounting uncertainty over his future.

BBC Sport reported on Monday that the executive’s role at the City Ground is under significant internal scrutiny owing to the club’s poor season so far.

Forest are 17th in the Premier League and level on points with West Ham, outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.

It is understood Edu, 47, has not been present at a Forest’s three most recent games, against Fenerbahce, Brighton and Manchester City.

The club have declined to comment but sources close to Forest insist that Edu continues to work as normal.

Having started the season with Nuno Espirito Santo in charge, Forest’s players are working under their fourth manager of the season in Vitor Pereira.

Nuno was sacked largely because of a breakdown in relations with Edu, with Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche suffering the same fate.

Pereira has been tasked with guiding Forest to top-flight survival but has yet to win a Premier League game since his appointment last month.

In terms of player recruitment, Forest have spent close to £200m on new players since the summer, a strategy that Edu – given his remit – has been central to.

Given their poor league position, there are understood to be misgivings internally with regards to Edu’s performance.

Sources have indicated to BBC Sport in recent days that Edu is likely to leave the City Ground before next season – but the club insist that is not true.

Nevertheless, Edu’s role remains under major scrutiny heading into the final weeks of the season.

Messi and Inter Miami meet Trump at White House https://www.adomonline.com/messi-and-inter-miami-meet-trump-at-white-house/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 08:24:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637942 Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami team-mates met United States president Donald Trump at the White House to commemorate the club’s MLS Cup triumph.

Inter Miami won the championship game of the nation’s top-flight division, Major League Soccer, for the first time back in December.

The club, co-owned by former England captain David Beckham, received an invitation to visit the White House before their MLS match against DC United in Washington on Saturday.

Messi and his team-mates stood on stage as Trump addressed the media, celebrating their achievement after providing an update on the ongoing US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

Trump said: “My son [Barron] said, ‘Dad, do you know who’s going to be there today?’ I said, ‘no, I’ve got a lot of things going on’.

“He said, ‘Messi!’ He’s a big fan of yours. He thinks you’re a great person and I think you got to meet a little while ago.”

Argentina icon Messi, 38, committed his future to Miami in October with a new deal until 2028.

The former Barcelona and Paris St-Germain forward became the first player in MLS history to win the Most Valuable Player award in back-to-back seasons.

Addressing Messi, Trump added: “Leo claimed the 47th trophy of his incredible career – the most of all time.

“You could have gone anywhere in the world, any team in the world, and you chose Miami. I just want to thank you for bringing us all on this ride.”

Trump added: “I shouldn’t say this because I’m old, but I watched Pele play. I don’t know, you may be better than Pele. Pele was pretty good.”

Lingard joins Corinthians – what awaits him in Brazil? https://www.adomonline.com/lingard-joins-corinthians-what-awaits-him-in-brazil/ Fri, 06 Mar 2026 08:07:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2638044 It’s a tradition that, with a few breaks over the years, has endured since the 1960s.

Every time Corinthians unveil a big signing, a siren sounds at their social club headquarters, Parque Sao Jorge.

It was like this with Socrates, Rivaldo, Carlos Tevez, Ronaldo ‘Phenomenon’ and, more recently, Memphis Depay.

The siren will be heard once again in eastern Sao Paulo as Corinthians introduce Jesse Lingard as their new signing. The former Manchester United midfielder arrives as a free agent after leaving South Korean club FC Seoul in December.

He has signed a contract until the end of the year, with the possibility it could be extended until the end of 2027 if certain goals are met.

Lingard had offers from other clubs, but, after a quick call to his former United team-mate Depay, he was in no doubt about his decision and had a flight booked even before a verbal agreement was in place.

A unique experience now awaits Lingard across the Atlantic.

Not only because the 33-year-old is set to become the first English footballer to feature in the Brazilian top flight.

But also because Corinthians themselves are a unique force in the domestic context, too.

“Every team has supporters. Corinthians are supporters who have a team,” journalist Jose Roberto de Aquino famously put it.

And they refer to themselves in a very particular way: “bando de loucos” – a bunch of crazies – a label the club has proudly embraced.

“Welcome to the madhouse,” reads a sign in the tunnel leading visiting sides to the pitch at the Neo Quimica Arena.

Corinthians fans are widely known as the most loyal in the country. For better and for worse, as Lingard will soon find out first-hand.

When the black and white team beat Chelsea 1-0 in the 2012 Intercontinental Cup final, 40,000 supporters travelled to Japan. They have also raised around £6m through a crowdfunding campaign to help the club pay for their stadium and saw their following grow even when the team went 23 years without a trophy.

That run came to an end in 1977 with a Sao Paulo State Championship title.

It was not a coincidence that Lingard was handed the number 77. It carries weight and he will know that from day one.

‘It’s a strange kind of signing’

Having left United in 2022 following 232 appearances for the club over an eight-year period, the ex-England international has an immediate challenge ahead of him: win over the Brazilian press.

It’s safe to say the reactions to his signing have not been exactly warm.

“I believe there are better players here in Brazil or even abroad. There are players who will cost less and work out the same,” argued former international defender Luisao, who faced Lingard with Benfica in a Champions League game in 2017.

Ilsinho, who won a Uefa Cup with Shakhtar Donetsk, added: “If he walks around Analia Franco (a popular neighbourhood in Sao Paulo’s eastern zone), nobody would ask him for a photo.”

Mauro Cezar Pereira, one of the most respected local pundits, said: “He’s been away from the most competitive level for a long time. I don’t know how much he’ll really add to Corinthians. It’s a strange kind of signing.”

Lingard can be certain fans will be behind him as he faces all the initial scrutiny.

However, as other big names have come to realise, he should not expect unconditional love.

As the club with the second biggest fanbase in Brazil, behind only Flamengo, whatever happens at Corinthians lands loudly.

The supporters demand total commitment. Otherwise, things can get a bit too wild, to say the least.

Fan protests in the past have led to the exits of superstars such as Roberto Carlos, Tevez and Javier Mascherano, and even contributed to Ronaldo’s retirement.

“This was one of the reasons Ronaldo left Corinthians. Ronaldo was just waiting for me to make my decision so he could make his too. We didn’t need to go through that,” Carlos revealed afterwards.

Can Lingard make the expected impact?

Flamengo and Palmeiras currently dominate South American and Brazilian football, but if there is one local team with potential to force its way into that conversation, it’s Corinthians.

No-one in their right mind would disagree.

“In terms of impact and stature, Corinthians can be compared to Barcelona and Manchester United. In terms of supporters, there’s no comparison,” Depay said in a recent interview with Brazilian legend Romario.

Turning that into results has been the main issue for the seven-time winners of the Brazilian league.

They will be hoping Lingard can help them with that on the pitch.

Such was the political situation in 2025 that supporters stormed into the club’s headquarters and locked the gates, declaring it “closed due to mismanagement”.

Last year was quite the year for Corinthians.

The club removed its president but then he tried a “coup” to return to office and was later charged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office with money laundering, criminal association and aggravated theft.

Meanwhile, the team’s debt reached £400m, resulting, among other things, in a transfer ban from Fifa.

Despite all that, as impressive as it may seem, Corinthians still managed to finish the season by lifting the Brazilian Cup.

Under former Brazil head coach Dorival Junior, young players such as midfielders Breno Bidon and Andre and striker Yuri Alberto have shined, while Depay established himself as a key leader.

Depay had asked for the club to bring in players with international experience for their Libertadores Cup campaign, and Lingard ticks that box.

The Warrington-born footballer will be looking to avoid the same level of exposure that left the Dutch forward furious as his contract was leaked to the press.

It revealed a package that included: a house in a gated community; an apartment for his assistant; armed private security; two armoured cars, each with a dedicated driver; 24 business-class flights between Brazil and Europe; a private chef; and a skybox at the Neo Quimica Arena.

Corinthians stress Lingard’s deal won’t include the same privileges.

The “madhouse” awaits the newest member of its “bunch of crazies”.

CAF reshedules 2026 WAFCON to July https://www.adomonline.com/caf-reshedules-2026-wafcon-to-july/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 14:35:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637745 The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has been officially postponed, with the tournament now scheduled to run from July 25 to August 16, 2026, instead of the original March 17 to April 3 dates.

The change comes less than two weeks before the competition was set to begin.

The tournament, which also serves as the qualifying stage for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil, had been surrounded by uncertainty in recent months, with reports suggesting Morocco might withdraw as host.

Following consultations with Morocco, the Confederation of African Football confirmed the rescheduling.

“In October 2024, the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) granted the hosting rights for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2026 to Morocco, and the tournament was initially scheduled for 17 March to 3 April 2026,” CAF said in a statement on Thursday, 12 days before the competition was due to start.

“After discussions between CAF and its partners, including FIFA and other stakeholders, CAF decided to reschedule the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2026 to 25 July – 16 August 2026 to ensure the success of this important women’s competition in light of unforeseen circumstances. Preparations are underway, and all parties are confident the tournament will be a success.”

The new dates place the competition shortly after the 2026 Men’s World Cup. CAF confirmed that Morocco remains the host despite earlier speculation and South Africa’s expressed interest. The tournament will continue to serve as a key qualifier for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Ghana Black Queens, drawn in Group D, will face Cameroon women’s national football team, Mali women’s national football team, and Cape Verde women’s national football team as they aim for a strong continental performance.

Antoine Semenyo earns Premier League Player of the Month Nomination for February https://www.adomonline.com/antoine-semenyo-earns-premier-league-player-of-the-month-nomination-for-february/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 13:33:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637738 Antoine Semenyo has been shortlisted for the Premier League Player of the Month award for February.

The Ghana international has been in impressive form for Manchester City since completing his move from AFC Bournemouth during the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old has quickly become an influential figure for City, scoring five goals in eight Premier League appearances for the club.

Semenyo scored three goals in February, opening the scoring in a 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur and netting decisive goals in victories over Fulham and Leeds United. He also provided an assist for Nico O’Reilly in the win against Fulham.

The former Bristol City forward has demonstrated his versatility since arriving at City, featuring both in midfield and as a centre-forward.

Across 28 Premier League matches this season, Semenyo has registered 14 goals and four assists.

He faces strong competition for the award from Viktor Gyokeres of Arsenal, teammate Nico O’Reilly, Dango Ouattara of Brentford, Benjamin Sesko of Manchester United, and Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool.

Fans have until 12:00 GMT on Monday, March 9, to cast their votes, with the winner expected to be announced next week.

I want to produce a referee capable of officiating the World Cup final – GFA Referees Manager https://www.adomonline.com/i-want-to-produce-a-referee-capable-of-officiating-the-world-cup-final-gfa-referees-manager/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 13:08:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637732 The Referees Manager of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alexander Kotey, has expressed a bold ambition to produce a Ghanaian referee capable of officiating a final at the FIFA World Cup.

According to Kotey, Ghana has the talent and potential to reach the highest level of international refereeing if the right development structures are put in place.

He noted that the vision goes beyond the current pool of officials and includes nurturing a new generation of referees who can compete on the global stage.

“I want to produce a Ghanaian referee capable of officiating a FIFA World Cup final. It is an ambitious target, but one I believe is achievable,” he told Ghana FA media.

“If it doesn’t come from the current crop of FIFA referees we have, then I’m confident it will come from the next generation. Either way, we will get there,” he added.

Currently, Ghana’s top international referee is Daniel Laryea, who was part of the officiating team at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.

We were heckled by Dreams FC’s thugs – Aduana FC General Manager  https://www.adomonline.com/we-were-heckled-by-dreams-fcs-thugs-aduana-fc-general-manager/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 10:22:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637685 The General Manager of Aduana FC, Takyi Arhin, has spoken out about the chaos that overshadowed their Ghana Premier League clash against Dreams FC over the weekend.

The “Ogya Boys” travelled to the Tuba AstroTurf to face the “Still Believe” side in their Matchday 24 fixture, which was disrupted following an alleged attack on Aduana FC officials by some home supporters.

Speaking on Ultimate Sports Show, Arhin said several pre-match arrangements agreed upon before the game were not honoured.

“Before the game, we agreed on several things, but when we went into the match, we realised that some of them were not done,” he stated.

“At the VIP section, Dreams FC brought thugs to heckle our team officials,” he added.

Arhin also alleged that security arrangements fell short of what had been agreed. “We agreed on 40 policemen, but there were only 20 present. There was no national ambulance, which was a concern for us. What I want to stress is that Dreams FC and their management must be careful,” he said.

He urged the management of Dreams FC to take the matter seriously, noting the club’s precarious position in the league.

“We have seen that they have been struggling, but they always find a way to survive. What happened was unacceptable, and when I meet Kurt Okraku, I’ll urge him to caution his management team. We will report to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) that our CEO, Atta Poku, was threatened with stabbing during the game,” Arhin added.

On the pitch, Dreams FC secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Aduana FC.

Meanwhile, Aduana FC have also been charged by the GFA Disciplinary Committee after their supporters allegedly threw bottles onto the pitch during the encounter.

The two-time league champions will be hoping to bounce back when they host Techiman Eleven Wonders in their Matchday 25 fixture this weekend.

A fan threatened to stab me during our game against Dreams FC – Aduana FC CEO reveals https://www.adomonline.com/a-fan-threatened-to-stab-me-during-our-game-against-dreams-fc-aduana-fc-ceo-reveals/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 10:04:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637673 The Chief Executive Officer of Aduana FC, Collins Attah Poku, has revealed that he narrowly escaped a stabbing incident during his team’s Ghana Premier League clash over the weekend.

The two-time league champions travelled to face Dreams FC at the Tuba AstroTurf in a Matchday 24 encounter that was marred by crowd disturbances.

Reports had suggested that Attah Poku was nearly stabbed during the game. Speaking on Ultimate Sports Show on Asempa FM, he confirmed that he was threatened by a supporter wielding a dagger.

“I was threatened by a fan with a dagger during our game against Dreams FC at the Tuba AstroTurf, but luckily, our cameraman was nearby,” he said.

Attah Poku added that the individual warned him to remain silent or face an attack, an incident that heightened tensions around the match.

Meanwhile, Aduana FC have been charged after one of their supporters allegedly threw a bottle onto the pitch during the fixture.

Reacting to the charge by the Ghana Football Association’s Disciplinary Committee, Attah Poku said the club does not dispute the allegation but questioned the basis of the prosecution.

“I don’t have a problem with our charge that a fan threw a bottle onto the pitch during our clash with Dreams FC, but I will question the prosecutor on whether he actually saw the fan who threw it,” he stated.

The incident capped a difficult afternoon for Aduana FC, who went on to suffer a narrow 1–0 defeat to Dreams FC.

2026 WC: Don’t underestimate Panama – Laryea Kingston urges Black Stars https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-dont-underestimate-panama-laryea-kingston-urges-black-stars/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 06:50:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637546 Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana national football team to treat all their opponents at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with caution, singling out Panama national football team as a potentially tricky challenge despite their status as perceived underdogs.

Ghana, drawn in Group L alongside Panama, the England national football team and the Croatia national football team, will compete in the summer tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In an interview with Graphic Sports, Kingston emphasised that familiarity with some teams should not lead to complacency.

“We know our opponents very well, apart from Panama. I think we are very much aware of England. A lot of people are writing off Panama, but for me, that’s the most important opponent,” he said.

“We see England and Croatia over and over again, playing every week. But the Panama team are players that we are unaware of. They will be a thorn in our flesh. I know most people see them as the underdogs, but I think they will be the most difficult match,” Kingston added.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Preparations include a March training camp with friendlies against the Austria national football team and the Germany national football team, followed by a final warm-up match against the Mexico national football team in May. During the tournament, Ghana will be based at Bryant University in the United States.

After group-stage exits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the team will be hoping to deliver a stronger and more competitive performance in North America.

2026 WC: Black Stars must aim at qualifying for the next round – Laryea Kingston https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-black-stars-must-aim-at-qualifying-for-the-next-round-laryea-kingston/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 06:46:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637542 Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged the Ghana national football team to aim higher than mere participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the team should target progressing beyond the group stage.

The four-time African champions will compete in this summer’s tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and have been drawn in Group L alongside the Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.

Kingston, who missed both the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup, emphasised that Ghana commands significant respect on the continent and should approach the Mundial with ambition.

“My expectations are simple. Ghana has a lot of respect in Africa — our mindset is not to just go and participate,” the Uganda junior national team coach told Graphic Sports.

“We are expected to go out there and do well, and I believe we will at least make it out of the group,” he added.

The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

As part of their preparations, Ghana will regroup in March for international friendlies against the Austria national football team and the Germany national football team, followed by a final warm-up match against the Mexico national football team in May. The team will be based at Bryant University in the United States for the duration of the tournament.

After group-stage exits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Black Stars will be hoping to deliver a stronger performance in North America.

2026 WC: Don’t create distraction in player call-ups – Otto Addo warned https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-dont-create-distraction-in-player-call-ups-otto-addo-warned/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 06:41:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637540 Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged Ghana national football team head coach Otto Addo to avoid introducing unfamiliar faces into his final squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

After Ghana secured qualification for the global showpiece, a number of Ghanaian-born players in the diaspora have reportedly shown interest in switching allegiance to represent the West African nation.

With the tournament approaching, calls have intensified for England-born forwards Callum Hudson-Odoi and Eddie Nketiah to be considered for the final squad for the competition, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer.

However, Kingston—currently head coach of the Uganda national under-20 football team and other junior national sides—believes the Black Stars coach should stick with players he already knows to prevent unnecessary disruption.

“To avoid distractions, it will be very good to maintain players that the coach already knows rather than bring in new players so close to a major tournament,” he told Graphic Sports.

He stressed that team selection should be based on trust and familiarity rather than sentiment.

“Fielding players that you don’t know tends to be torture because you are not sure what the player can do, and the player may also not know what you expect from him,” he said.

“So it’s very tough. Yes, they are Ghanaians, but we have to look at their contributions to the qualification. It’s always good to have a group of players that you believe in, monitor their progress, ensure they are getting minutes at their clubs and hitting top form when they come into the national team,” Kingston added.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17 before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

As part of their preparations, the team is expected to regroup in March for friendly matches against the Austria national football team and Germany national football team, followed by another fixture against the Mexico national football team in May. The squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States during the tournament.

After early exits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Black Stars will be hoping for a more impressive run when the competition returns to North America.

2026 WC: We will need the best players to compete – Laryea Kingston https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-we-will-need-the-best-players-to-compete-laryea-kingston/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 06:38:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637538 Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has stressed the importance of assembling the country’s strongest squad as the Ghana national football team prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions are set to compete at the global showpiece tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Drawn in Group L, Ghana will face Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.

Kingston believes head coach Otto Addo must call on the nation’s most in-form players to ensure the team remains competitive at the tournament.

“The World Cup is a top-level competition, so as a country we need all our best players to compete well,” Kingston told the Daily Graphic.

Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23. Their final group match will be against Croatia on June 27.

As part of preparations for the tournament, the Black Stars will regroup in March for friendly matches against Austria national football team and Germany national football team. A final warm-up game against Mexico national football team has also been scheduled for May.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association has confirmed that the team will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the competition.

After suffering group-stage exits at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Black Stars will be eager to make a stronger impression in North America.

‘Only one team tried to play’ – Hurzeler criticises Arsenal https://www.adomonline.com/only-one-team-tried-to-play-hurzeler-criticises-arsenal/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 06:04:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637708 Arsenal are now firmly cast as the villains of the Premier League title race – but this frenzied night and win at Brighton might just be the one that ultimately makes them victors.

The Gunners would, in all likelihood, end up as unpopular, unloved champions as their hard-nosed approach comes under increasingly unflattering scrutiny.

Indeed, Brighton’s head coach Fabian Hurzeler, who flagged up what he clearly regarded as Arsenal’s time-wasting before the game, did not have his opinion changed by what he saw.

“I think there was only one team who tried to play football today”, said Hurzeler, “and therefore I’m proud of how they did it.”

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta defended his corner, greeting Hurzeler’s criticism with a caustic “what a surprise” before saying: “You just go back to the previous games and you’ll find a lot of comments like this always.”

But more criticism came their way from the outspoken Hurzeler after a fractious eyesore of a game was settled by Bukayo Saka’s early goal, one that saw Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table extended to seven points, creating a potentially decisive advantage.

Will Arsenal and Arteta care if the means justify the end of a 22-year wait to win the Premier League? Unlikely.

Arteta’s side have been criticised for what outside observers regard as their employment of dark arts and an over-reliance on set-piece expertise to maintain their position at the top of the table.

And this 1-0 victory at Amex Stadium was the very definition of winning ugly. In fact to describe it as “ugly” is an insult to ugly.

When the half-time whistle arrived, Arsenal’s xG was just 0.01. The second half was hardly an improvement given it took until the 88th minute for Kai Havertz to register their second effort on target. The final result was the 10th time this season they have won by a single goal.

It was certainly not pleasing on the eye to Hurzeler, who spent almost the entire game enraged by Arsenal’s strategy and what unfolded before him.

And yet, as the Gunners fans reacted joyously at the final whistle to this win and also at Manchester City’s failure to beat Nottingham Forest, this beast of a triumph might turn out to be a beauty.

As Arsenal celebrated and City slipped, this felt like it may well be the defining night in this tense battle to the Premier League finishing line.

This is not a popularity contest. It is a fiercely competitive title contest that Arsenal are currently winning.

Hurzeler continued on a theme that is developing around Arteta’s Arsenal when he said: “I will never be that kind of manager who tries to win in that way. I want to do well. I want my players to keep improving, keep playing football on the pitch.

“In the end, of course, every team will manage and waste time, but I think there has to be a limit, and the limit has to be set by the Premier League. The limit has to be set by the referees, at the moment they just do what they want.”

Hurzeler continued: “If I would ask now everyone in the room if he really enjoyed this football game I’m sure maybe one raises his arm because he is a big Arsenal fan but besides that, no chance.”

Arteta, as expected, passionately defended his players and their approach.

“I love my players,” he said. “That’s the highlight. I love my players, we love our players and I love the way we compete.”

And on external criticism, Arteta replied: “I think they love our players. I mean, every time they talk about our players, I think they are the most loved ones in the country.”

He added: “We look after our own garden.”

The Gunners’ garden currently looks very rosy, but it is increasingly clear that if they are to win their first Premier League since Arsene Wenger’s “Invincibles” 22 years ago, there will not be many admirers outside their own part of north London.

This mess of a match was settled by a goal in keeping with Arsenal’s win, a routine ninth-minute shot from Bukayo Saka that took a deflection off Carlos Baleba before slipping through the legs of Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen.

This was about as creative as it got for Arsenal as they were forced back by Brighton, barely creating another opening, hanging on helped by immense, committed defending.

At the heart of it all was the magnificent Gabriel, repelling all Brighton’s borders and marshalling resources with his outstanding central defensive partner William Saliba missing through injury.

Arsenal now have that seven point cushion, although City still have a game in hand and face the Gunners at Etihad Stadium. It still had the feeling of a result that carried huge weight.

“You just look at this Arsenal side and how they go about winning games, they manage to just grind out results and that’s all they’ve done tonight,” said former England goalkeeper Rob Green on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“They’ve had a stroke of good fortune. There’s not one player that can turn around and say they had a good game, except maybe [Piero] Hincapie and maybe one or two others defensively.”

Arsenal are almost revelling in their status as the bad guys of the Premier League, with Hurzeler’s pre-match words adding spice to an already red-hot atmosphere.

He turned in anger to fourth official David Webb after only eight minutes when Arsenal lingered over a throw-in. Every delay (and there were plenty) brought howls of outrage from Brighton’s fans.

Arsenal’s huddle at the start of the second half was greeted with more derision and jeers. If Hurzeler was making a point to Brighton’s fans with his words before the game, they hit the bullseye.

The fury was at its height on the hour when Arsenal keeper David Raya made a save from Georginio Rutter down to his right then slumped to the ground holding his shoulder, requiring lengthy treatment.

Brighton’s fans were at boiling point and Hurzeler clearly felt the same as he said later: “I ask one question. Did you see in the Premier League game a goalkeeper going down three times? No.”

The ill-temper continued into stoppage time when match-winner Saka went down and stayed down.

Clearly believing it was an act of gamesmanship and a delaying tactic, Brighton’s Joel Veltman unceremoniously tried to drag Saka to his feet, prompting a push and an angry exchange.

It was the last flare-up of a confrontational night, one that ended with Arsenal having their destiny in their own hands as they stand eight games from title glory.

And if they do finally claim that elusive Premier League crown, Arsenal will believe this is the ultimate answer to their growing band of detractors as they chase that first Premier League since Arsene Wenger’s “Invincibles” 22 years ago.

Carrick looks for ‘lessons’ after first Man Utd loss https://www.adomonline.com/carrick-looks-for-lessons-after-first-man-utd-loss/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 04:41:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637535 At moments like this, all you can do is say the right things.

Say the defeat was disappointing, that the performance was not what was hoped for and that lessons will be learned. Say the team will respond in a positive way.

It is not in Michael Carrick’s nature to throw players under the bus.

Unlike his predecessor, he will never say, “This is maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United”, Ruben Amorim offering that opinion just over a year ago after a home defeat by Brighton.

But Carrick is no-one’s fool either. He knows the 11 days between the chastening 2-1 defeat by 10-man Newcastle at St James’ Park and the visit of Aston Villa to Old Trafford on 15 March could be the most important of his season.

If he gets it right and Manchester United follow Chelsea’s lead by beating Villa, Carrick will have done two things. Firstly, he will have put his club in pole position to qualify for the Champions League, which few thought was realistic when he stepped into Amorim’s shoes.

In addition, from a personal perspective, he will also have shown he really can learn from defeats and respond.

As his old boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, used to say, “Every team loses, it is part of the game; it is what you do about it that counts”.

“We are bitterly disappointed,” said Carrick. “It hurts.

“We came here in good shape. The way it panned out is very disappointing. There is no two ways about that.”

Results-wise, Carrick is right. Six wins and a draw from his first seven games in charge was an excellent return and he headed back to the north-east with a winning mentality.

But results never tell the whole story.

Four games ago at West Ham, Manchester United were “stodgy'” by Carrick’s own admission. It took an injury-time Benjamin Sesko goal to salvage a point.

At Everton, Sesko finished off the only notable passage of play from either side. On Sunday, Manchester United’s response to going behind early to Crystal Palace was muted until Matheus Cunha won the penalty that also brought the red card that turned the game on its head.

Carrick’s team have been getting results. However, their most-recent performances have not matched those that beat Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham at the start of his time at the helm.

Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have not been a goal threat; Kobbie Mainoo’s performance levels have dipped, while penetration from full-back areas has reduced.

It is a basic reality that they do not have limitless numbers of top-quality players. By the final whistle at St James’ Park, Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount, Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Dorgu were all absent because of injury. Casemiro and Luke Shaw were off the pitch feeling the effects of two hard games in four days. Carrick does not have the squad depth to cover those losses and still keep standards high.

So, embarrassingly, Manchester United lost against 10 men for the second time in just over three months. The damage was done by William Osula – a player who, as an 11-year-old, appeared on the pitch at Old Trafford to collect a Soccer Schools World Skills final victory prize.

His goal came after he got the better of Tyrell Malacia, who was making only his second appearance of a season he started as a member of Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’. The previous one was against Newcastle too.

The damage is not too bad though. Liverpool lost 24 hours earlier against the league’s bottom club before Aston Villa suffered a heavy home loss to Chelsea on Wednesday.

Manchester United remain third. They remain, out of the sides scrapping it out for three Champions League places in addition to the ones Arsenal and Manchester City will claim, the ones with no European or domestic cup distractions.

“We need to learn from this,” said Carrick.

“There is no sense in not learning lessons and understanding how tonight happened.

“We can’t lose sight of the bigger picture though – we have put ourselves into a position that can be really exciting.

“We’ve got to be positive going into the next game and look forward to it because there is a lot to play for.”

Carrick is right about that.

He needs to make sure his team’s response to this defeat is just as sure footed.

‘I never point fingers’ – Man City blink first in title race https://www.adomonline.com/i-never-point-fingers-man-city-blink-first-in-title-race/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 04:37:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637531 Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have blinked first in the Premier League title run-in as they stumbled to a draw against Nottingham Forest.

City led twice through Antoine Semenyo and Rodri against relegation-threatened Forest but failed to see out the game and now lie seven behind leaders Arsenal.

Guardiola’s men have a game in hand against Crystal Palace but this could be a gameweek where the momentum and belief swings in the direction of Mikel Arteta’s men.

City had 70% possession and 21 shots but their inability to hold on to a lead could prove crucial come May, as they have now dropped a whopping 13 points from winning positions this season.

“It is a lot but there are games that maybe we didn’t deserve it but today we played, in general, good for 90 minutes,” said Guardiola. “You have to stop transitions, long balls you have to defend but it’s not about this action or that action, in general the game was well played.

“We created a lot against a team so defensive, a really good team, [which is] more dynamic.”

‘Arsenal don’t care – they won’

January signing Semenyo has hit his stride quickly at City and looked like being a difference-maker in the title race after his winner at Leeds United on Saturday.

Against Forest, he scored his seventh goal since arriving from Bournemouth to give City a 1-0 advantage at half-time.

But a familiar story then unfolded. The statistics show City have dropped off in the second half of matches – had games finished at half-time, Guardiola’s side would sit 13 points clear of Arsenal but instead find themselves seven points adrift.

Forest had twice fallen behind but managed to hit back through Morgan Gibbs-White’s superb instinctive backheel and Elliot Anderson’s stunning curling effort.

The reaction from the City players at full-time was telling, heads bowed and shoulders slumped in the knowledge that these were two crucial points dropped.

“I would like to concede fewer but it’s not about analysing one specific action,” said Guardiola. “I never point fingers at my players. We did everything.

“We had the chances at the end and in the first half and the momentum. But something always happens and we could not win.”

Arsenal kicked off at the same time as City on Wednesday and capitalised by scraping a 1-0 victory at Brighton.

“Arsenal can keep playing badly and winning all they like – it’s the others that are faltering,” former England goalkeeper Rob Green said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Manchester City are faltering and you just look at this Arsenal side and how they go about winning games, they manage to just grind out results and that’s all they’ve done tonight. They don’t care, they won.”

Haaland incident ‘is a penalty’

Leading 2-1 in the second half, City’s star striker Erling Haaland ran through on goal and went down after contact with Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels.

Referee Darren England did not award a penalty and video assistant referee Tony Harrington felt there was no need to overturn the decision.

It left City captain Bernardo Silva questioning the officials, telling TNT Sports: “We are used to this [happening] this season. All the 50-50s have gone against us.

“The Erling incident – for me it is a penalty. What can Erling do? This season we are used to it. We know how it works.

“Our job is to be better. These things we cannot control. What we can control is our own performances. That is what we must focus on.”

Guardiola was not getting drawn into a discussion on the incident, adding: “I spoke weeks ago about that subject.

“I always believe that we have to do it much better so the officials don’t intervene. It’s our responsibility to do it better, we don’t have to rely on them.

“Nothing more to say, I said it in the past.”

Maguire given reduced 15-month suspended sentence https://www.adomonline.com/maguire-given-reduced-15-month-suspended-sentence/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 04:31:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637526 Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been handed a 15-month suspended sentence by a Greek court following an incident on the island of Mykonos in August 2020.

England international Maguire was given a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days in prison in 2020, after initially being found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult.

The following day Maguire’s legal team lodged an appeal against the verdict. In accordance with Greek law, the appeal nullified his conviction and meant there would be a full retrial.

The retrial was postponed on four occasions between 2023 and 2025, before it restarted in Syros on Wednesday.

It concluded that Maguire was guilty of non-serious assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery.

In accordance with the reduced severity of the defender’s crimes, Maguire’s sentence was reduced to 15 months.

Sources have told BBC Sport that Maguire denies wrongdoing and plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Maguire has rejected a number of opportunities to settle the case out of court, as he is determined to clear his name legally.

Liverpool top-five failure ‘could cost £120m’ https://www.adomonline.com/liverpool-top-five-failure-could-cost-120m/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 04:29:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637523 “The stakes are very high,” Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said after Tuesday’s surprise 2-1 Premier League defeat to Wolves.

The loss at Molineux left Liverpool in fifth place, which is almost certain to be enough to qualify for the Champions League.

But the table is tight. And Chelsea’s 4-1 win at fourth-placed Aston Villa on Wednesday meant the Reds dropped to sixth on goal difference.

“Either we get it and we deserve it or we don’t get it and we don’t deserve it,” Van Dijk said.

“If you play for Liverpool, it’s always been like this. It’s down to us, together with our fans, to get the results we need to get into the Champions League.”

Beyond the sporting implications, there are huge finances at stake.

Failure to qualify for the Champions League could be worth as much as £120m, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who also said the Reds were better placed to weather such a drop because they are well run.

‘Extremely well run Liverpool can withstand the revenue drop’ – Maguire

Prize money and commercial opportunities are significantly lower in the other European competitions.

Uefa’s financial report shows that Arne’s Slot’s side earned 98.1m euros (£85.3m) in distribution payments for reaching the last 16 of the Champions League in the 2024-25 season.

When Liverpool were in the Europa League in 2023-24, they got just 26.8m euros (£23.3m) for getting to the quarter-finals.

Winning the tournament would help bridge the funding gap a little more.

Tottenham received 41.4m euros (£36m) after lifting the Europa League last season, but Chelsea were paid just 21.8m euros (£20m) from the Conference League.

Maguire said that the loss of money from Uefa would only be part of the story.

“It also has an impact upon matchday receipts,” Maguire said. “It has an effect on the broadcasting money.

“It will mean lower commercial revenues, because there will be bonuses embedded in contracts with senior sponsors.”

At the high end, Maguire thinks being out of the Champions League could in total “cost Liverpool around £120m”.

Liverpool splashed out more than £400m last summer, signing players such as Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak.

It was the biggest spend by a club in a transfer window.

But Maguire says that Liverpool “are extremely well run”. One season outside of the Champions League might not have a huge effect, he said.

Last week, Liverpool announced record revenues of £703m for the club’s most recent financial year through to May 2025. The club returned a profit of £8m.

Even with last year’s signings, Liverpool are only eighth on net transfer spend over the past five years.

“While they did have a significant transfer outlay, you’ve to take a long-term view on their spending,” Maguire said.

“It’s still substantially behind the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea in particular.”

Uefa’s latest benchmarking report says that Chelsea made a pre-tax loss of £355m for 2024-25.

Manchester United’s finances are improving but the club’s debt is now approaching £1.3bn.

Will Liverpool have any problems when it comes to complying with financial rules?

“The simple answer is no,” Maguire added. “They’re very forensic in terms of their financial analysis.”

Being out of the Champions League could of course affect the players they might attract to Anfield.

For Van Dijk and for Liverpool, being in the top competition will remain vital regardless of money.

UCL: Galatasaray fans banned from Liverpool second leg https://www.adomonline.com/ucl-galatasaray-fans-banned-from-liverpool-second-leg/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 04:25:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637520 Galatasaray fans have been banned from the club’s Champions League visit to Liverpool later this month following crowd disturbances during their game with Juventus in the previous round.

European governing body Uefa said supporters of the Turkish club had thrown objects and lit fireworks during the last-16 play-off tie second leg in Turin on 25 February.

Despite losing 3-2 on the night, they progressed 7-5 on aggregate and will host the Merseysiders in Istanbul next Tuesday (17:45 GMT) with the return leg to be staged at Anfield on 18 March (20:00).

However, Uefa has banned the Super Lig leaders from selling tickets to supporters for the away trip and also fined them 40,000 euros (£34,800).

In a statement, Galatasaray said they would appeal against the punishment.

‘World-class’ Joao Pedro fills Costa’s shoes at Chelsea https://www.adomonline.com/world-class-joao-pedro-fills-costas-shoes-at-chelsea/ Thu, 05 Mar 2026 04:23:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637517 It has taken nine years, but Chelsea appear to have found a striker in Joao Pedro capable of leading the line in the way Diego Costa did during the 2016–17 title‑winning season.

The 24-year-old’s hat‑trick away to rivals Aston Villa may only have provided a boost in the race for Champions League qualification, but it came in a match Chelsea had gone into with head coach Liam Rosenior speaking of time “running out” for their hopes.

It was an exceptional, all‑action display from a forward now on 17 goals in all competitions, with 14 of them non‑penalty strikes in the Premier League alongside seven league assists. Only Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has more non‑penalty goals in the league this season.

Not since Costa have Chelsea had a striker capable of reaching 20 goals in a season, a mark the Brazilian now needs just three more to reach with at least 12 games remaining, including the upcoming FA Cup tie at Wrexham and two‑legged Champions League tie against Paris St‑Germain.

Joao Pedro’s first goal came as he cleverly peeled away from Ezri Konsa at the far post to tap in an equaliser, after Chelsea had fallen behind to an early Douglas Luiz strike.

He put Chelsea in front by dinking a finish over Emiliano Martinez just before half‑time, before sealing victory when he tapped in an Alejandro Garnacho cross shortly after Cole Palmer had powered in Chelsea’s third.

Joao Pedro earned a pat on the back from Rosenior and a standing ovation from the supporters when he came off in the 85th minute.

After the match, Rosenior was naturally asked about his target man and said: “He is a top player and growing in confidence.

“His goal with his left foot is world class, but I was really delighted with his two tap-ins. He was in the right place at the right time [and we have] worked hard with him on that. He gets a hat-trick and it is an outstanding team performance.”

While Rosenior was keen to praise the entire team it was Joao Pedro who was mentioned most and rightly so – his goals have helped lift Chelsea to fifth and cut the gap on Villa to just three points as they push to meet their minimum pre‑season target of qualifying for the Champions League again.

Chelsea have their answer to Sesko, Gyokores and Isak

Chelsea had watched Arsenal secure Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting, Manchester United sign Benjamin Sesko and Liverpool then prise Alexander Isak from Newcastle for a British‑record £150m, before completing the £55m signing of Joao Pedro from Brighton in July.

Having been spotted on a beach in Brazil while on holiday, he made an immediate impact at the Club World Cup, scoring three goals in three starts – including a lob similar to his second strike at Villa Park in the final win over Paris St‑Germain in New Jersey.

Perhaps fortunately, Joao Pedro opted for the number 20 shirt having arrived after Liam Delap’s move from Ipswich, with the English striker taking the number nine jersey.

That number has weighed heavily on Delap – just as it has on others including Pierre‑Emerick Aubameyang, Radamel Falcao, Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku, Alvaro Morata and Gonzalo Higuain during underwhelming spells in west London.

Instead, Joao Pedro exceeded early expectations, scoring twice and providing three assists in his first four Premier League matches.

He then struggled with fitness issues during the autumn period, leading to a dip in form as former head coach Enzo Maresca managed his workload carefully.

But since Rosenior’s appointment, he has scored 10 goals in nine Premier League games, along with two more away to Napoli in the Champions League to help the club to avoid the play‑off round.

But his hat-trick at Villa is his biggest achievement in Chelsea colours to date.

“I think it is a special night for me,” Joao Pedro told TNT Sport. “I was waiting for this time. My hat-trick came at the right moment, after we lost against Arsenal, I think we showed them the comeback and how much we want to achieve.

“I work a lot to be ready for this moment and I have great players around me so I try to always be in the right place and today I could score three goals.

“Today was special that is why I did a small samba [dance].”

Chelsea have also been impressed with Joao Pedro’s influence behind the scenes. He has acted as a mentor to young Brazilian pair Estevao Willian and Andrey Santos, having moved to England seven years ago to join Watford as a teenager.

He has also volunteered for media duties after difficult defeats and has helped bridge dressing‑room divides, befriending English, Spanish and French‑speaking team-mates.

It is not a feeling Chelsea have often had in recent years, but they can finally be content with their main striker as he helps ease the pressure in their bid to ensure they are in Europe’s top‑tier competition next season.

CAF to decide fate of 2026 WAFCON within 48 hours https://www.adomonline.com/caf-to-decide-fate-of-2026-wafcon-within-48-hours/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 22:29:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637319 The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to announce a decision on the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) within the next 48 hours.

The tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco later this month, has been clouded by uncertainty following reports of a possible postponement.

Sources indicated last week that CAF is considering relocating the continental competition, which also serves as the qualification pathway for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Although the reports have not been officially confirmed, CAF’s Head of TV and Commercial, Luxolo September, assured fans that an announcement is imminent.

“CAF will communicate within the next 48 hours on the situation regarding the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“There have been several discussions for weeks. The matter is receiving urgent and high-level attention.”

Meanwhile, South Africa has signaled its readiness to step in should Morocco be unable or unwilling to host. The country’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, emphasized South Africa’s capability and infrastructure.

“If Morocco is ready to host the WAFCON because they had a brilliant AFCON, they should do so. But if they are not ready, we want to tell them we (South Africa) are not a country that doesn’t host games. We are not a country with less infrastructure. We will never be held hostage by countries that have less than what we have,” McKenzie said.

“We don’t wait for anyone. We will not allow women’s football to be treated this way. If Morocco is not going to host it, South Africa is standing ready because, at the end of the day, we will embarrass the President of CAF.”

The tournament is currently scheduled to run from March 17 to April 3, with qualified nations already preparing for the competition.

Semenyo’s consistency key to Ghana’s 2026 World Cup final dream, says Inkoom https://www.adomonline.com/semenyos-consistency-key-to-ghanas-2026-world-cup-final-dream-says-inkoom/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 22:29:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637371 Former Black Stars defender Samuel Inkoom has underscored the pivotal role of Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

Semenyo, 26, joined Manchester City from AFC Bournemouth during the January transfer window. In just 11 appearances, he has already scored six goals, including a crucial strike against Leeds United that helped maintain City’s title challenge.

Speaking to Connect FM, Inkoom stressed that Ghana’s success this summer could hinge on Semenyo maintaining his current form.

“If Semenyo stays consistent, Ghana can make it to the finals of the 2026 World Cup,” said Inkoom, the former FC Basel right back who featured at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Ghana, preparing for their fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn into Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The campaign kicks off against Panama on June 17, followed by a clash with England on June 23, and concludes with a match against Croatia on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, the Black Stars will play friendlies in March against Austria and Germany, with a final warm-up fixture against Mexico in May. The squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the World Cup.

2026 WC: GFA’s decision to strengthen Black Stars’ backroom staff a right call – Inkoom https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-gfas-decision-to-strengthen-black-stars-backroom-staff-a-right-call-inkoom/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 22:28:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637292 Former Black Stars defender Samuel Inkoom has expressed support for the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) recent revamp of the senior national team’s technical staff ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Last month, the GFA announced five new appointments aimed at strengthening the team’s backroom setup. French coach Alain Ravera and Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren joined as assistant coaches, while Spanish strategist Jose Daniel Martinez Alfonso was recruited to enhance scouting and match analysis.

Returning to the fold are Carlos Lozano Romero, the team’s physiotherapist from the 2022 World Cup, and British-born Ghanaian performance coach Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi.

The shake-up has sparked debate among fans and pundits over its potential impact on Ghana’s World Cup campaign. Inkoom, however, sees it as a sign of serious planning and commitment by the football authorities.

Speaking to Connect FM, Inkoom commended both the GFA and the Sports Ministry for their pre-tournament preparations.

“The pre-tournament preparation by the GFA and the Sports Ministry has been great. The new addition to the technical team is a good one. Football is all about preparation, and I am happy we are preparing well,” he said.

The former defender stressed that World Cup success requires more than talent on the pitch, highlighting the importance of tactical analysis and thorough scouting.

“If you’re going to the World Cup without properly monitoring your opponents, the tournament will be very difficult for you, and you won’t enjoy it,” Inkoom added.

Ghana, making its fifth World Cup appearance, has been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Preparations include March friendlies against Austria and Germany, followed by a final warm-up match with Mexico in May. The GFA confirmed that the squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States for the duration of the tournament.

Officiating mistakes have frequently made headlines during the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, ranging from controversial penalty calls to goals wrongly awarded or disallowed.

Speaking on the GFA Podcast, Kotey stressed the association’s commitment to improving refereeing standards.

“We’ve put a lot of structures in place and we are trying to plug some of them [referees] out, but it’s been quite slow because we need to be very tactful in doing that.

“We have placed a lot of referees on ice for errors.

“Where you see a referee who is not in a position to be developed, you kick the person out,” he added.

One of the most debated incidents this season was the disallowed goal for Kotoko against Bibiani Gold Stars at Dun’s Park, a decision taken by referee Julian Nunoo.

Athletic Club, without the injured Nico Williams, could not find a goal to mount a comeback at Estadio Municipal de Anoeta in the Basque derby.

Then Spain international Oyarzabal stepped up to put away a spot-kick, as referee Cesar Soto Grado gave a penalty following a video assistant referee review of a shirt pull on midfielder Yangel Herrera by Athletic Club substitute Inigo Ruiz de Galarreta.

Real Sociedad will face Diego Simeone’s side, having reached their seventh final in a competition they have won just twice in their history.

Atletico reached the decider despite suffering a 3-0 defeat by Barcelona on Tuesday night as they progressed 4-3 on aggregate.

Despite needing to score to get themselves back in the tie, Athletic Club struggled to create chances and it was the hosts who came closest in the first half with Carlos Soler forcing goalkeeper Alex Padilla into a decent stop from a free-kick.

Goncalo Guedes then fired a chance into the side netting before half-time.

Real Sociedad midfielder Yangel Herrera headed a corner over for the home side in a second half short of real chances.

Inaki Williams was Athletic Club’s brightest spark but he could not inspire them to find an equaliser in the tie while Alex Berenguer fired wide from inside the area before Oyarzabal sent Padilla the wrong way from the spot in the 87th minute.

Real Sociedad last reached the Copa del Rey final in 2020 but that was played behind closed doors because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This will be their first final in front of fans since the 1988 decider, when they lost to Barcelona.

2026 WC: No GPL player deserves Black Stars call-up aside Benjamin Asare – Polo https://www.adomonline.com/2026-wc-no-gpl-player-deserves-black-stars-call-up-aside-benjamin-asare-polo/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 22:26:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637277 Former Ghana international Mohammed Polo has questioned the readiness of local players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, asserting that only Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare deserves a place in the Black Stars squad.

With Ghana set to compete in North America this summer, the four-time African champions have historically relied on overseas-based talent, a trend that appears set to continue.

Polo attributed this reliance to the declining standard of the domestic league.

“Apart from Benjamin Asare, no Ghana Premier League player is quality enough to be at the 2026 FIFA World Cup,” the AFCON winner told Connect FM.

“The quality of the Ghana Premier League has gone down drastically. I watched the Super Clash the other time and didn’t enjoy it because the players weren’t good enough.

“Despite the red card for Hearts of Oak in the game, Asante Kotoko couldn’t create anything significant, and it all came down to quality,” he added.

The Black Stars will begin their 2026 World Cup campaign in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. Ghana will face Panama on June 17, England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

Ahead of the tournament, the team will reconvene in March for friendlies against Austria and Germany, followed by a final warm-up match against Mexico in May.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that the squad will be based at Bryant University in the United States throughout the competition.

Arsenal edge past Brighton to go seven points clear https://www.adomonline.com/arsenal-edge-past-brighton-to-go-seven-points-clear/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 22:20:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637504 Arsenal rode their luck to survive a torrid encounter at Brighton and extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points.

Brighton were the superior side for long periods – but Bukayo Saka’s deflected early strike proved enough to give Mikel Arteta’s side a priceless triumph, especially with Manchester City being held to a 2-2 draw at home by struggling Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal’s night almost began in catastrophic fashion in the opening seconds when goalkeeper David Raya sent a clearance straight to Carlos Baleba, but his attempted chip was weak, allowing Gabriel to retreat and head off the line.

And the Gunners’ luck was in after nine minutes when Saka’s routine shot took a deflection off Baleba and went through the legs of Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen, who should have done better.

Brighton’s fans, whipped up by head coach Fabian Hurzeler on the sidelines, were infuriated by what they saw as Arsenal’s time-wasting, erupted in fury just before the hour when Raya saved from Georginio Rutter then stayed on the floor clutching his shoulder before getting treatment.

Arsenal were placed under severe pressure and Brighton should have levelled, only for Mats Wieffer to head straight at Raya from point-blank range.

In the end, Brighton ran out of steam to allow Arsenal to close out another very scrappy, but hugely significant, win on a night when Manchester City slipped up.

Man City stumble as Forest claim unlikely draw https://www.adomonline.com/man-city-stumble-as-forest-claim-unlikely-draw/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 22:17:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637501 Title-chasing Manchester City stumbled at home as they were held to draw by relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest to fall seven points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

With the top two kicking off at the same time on Wednesday evening, the Gunners edged past Brighton while Elliot Anderson’s brilliantly-curled finish 13 minutes from time stole a crucial point for Forest at Etihad Stadium.

The visitors had been sitting back and allowed City to dominate possession without really threatening in the opening stages, though Semenyo sent a warning sign by arrowing an effort into the side-netting.

The hosts made their pressure count just after the half hour mark when Rayan Cherki dinked a cross into the box and January signing Semenyo caressed a delightful volley for his seventh goal since joining City.

Forest had chances on the break either side of the goal but Morgan Gibbs-White’s tame effort was gathered low down by Gianluigi Donnarumma and the Italy international also batted away a swerving low drive from Igor Jesus.

But against the run of play, Forest drew level on 56 minutes courtesy of skipper Gibbs-White’s stunning finish, instinctively backheeling a finish past Donnarumma following Igor Jesus’ knock down.

City looked to respond and Erling Haaland’s strike deflected off Murillo and looped on to the roof of the net, with midfielder Rodri heading in from the resulting corner to restore their advantage.

But with time running out, England international Anderson curled in from 25 yards out for a precious point which keeps Vitor Pereira’s side outside the relegation zone on goal difference.

Joao Pedro treble earns Chelsea crucial win at Villa https://www.adomonline.com/joao-pedro-treble-earns-chelsea-crucial-win-at-villa/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 22:14:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637498 Joao Pedro’s hat-trick breathed fresh life into Chelsea’s Champions League charge with a statement win at rivals Aston Villa.

The striker took his tally to 17 for the season, with Cole Palmer also netting, as the visitors came from behind at Villa Park.

Douglas Luiz’s first goal in more than two years gave Villa the lead, but following the turnaround, they are now just three points above Chelsea in the Premier League – missing the chance to move nine points clear.

The Blues moved up to fifth, a place behind Villa, in the race for the Champions League just a day after head coach Liam Rosenior warned they were running out of time to cut the gap.

It was Villa’s heaviest home defeat in two years and, having gone 12 months unbeaten in the Premier League at Villa Park until August, they have now lost three of their past five top-flight home games.

It was the perfect start for the hosts, though, when Leon Bailey produced a low cross for Douglas Luiz to flick in from close range after two minutes.

As Chelsea responded, Emi Martinez saved from Joao Pedro and Palmer while Reece James had a penalty claim rejected after going down under Ian Maatsen’s challenge.

Those chances emboldened the visitors and Joao Pedro deservedly levelled when he tapped in Malo Gusto’s pass.

The visitors were on top but almost gifted Villa the lead when James’ loose pass allowed Villa to break and Ollie Watkins beat Filip Jorgensen – only for the video assistant referee to narrowly rule him offside.

More VAR frustration was to come for Villa in first-half injury time when Enzo Fernandez’s cute pass found Joao Pedro to lift the ball over Martinez, with the striker judged to be just onside.

Palmer then struck 10 minutes after the break and Joao Pedro completed his treble from Alejandro Garnacho’s pass.

Will Osula hits wonder goal as 10-man Newcastle sink Manchester United https://www.adomonline.com/will-osula-hits-wonder-goal-as-10-man-newcastle-sink-manchester-united/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 12:30:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637513 William Osula scored a 90th-minute winner as 10-man Newcastle inflicted a first defeat on Michael Carrick as Manchester United, with the Magpies’ 2-1 victory their fourth in succession at home to the Red Devils in the Premier League (PL).

With just one win in their last seven PL games (D1, L5), Newcastle were in desperate need of turning their league form around, but they were coming up against the division’s form team during that same period, with Carrick’s Red Devils claiming six victories (D1).

The Magpies were guilty of a lethargic performance in their 3-2 loss at home to Everton on the weekend, but it was the polar opposite here, as the Toon Army roared them onto a rapid start. Kieran Trippier saw his cross bounce off the woodwork, and Lewis Hall pounced on the loose ball but blazed over the bar.

The home side were dominant inside the opening quarter-hour as Anthony Elanga flashed a shot narrowly wide, before Joelinton dispossessed compatriot Casemiro and picked out Harvey Barnes on the edge of the box, but his effort curled past the post.

The visitors struggled to get going, but eventually created multiple openings before the interval.

Kobbie Mainoo forced Aaron Ramsdale into a save with a rasping shot from distance, while Matheus Cunha was denied minutes later by the returning Magpies stopper and Bryan Mbeumo skied the rebound from a few yards out.

The hosts were dealt a blow in first-half stoppage time when Jacob Ramsey was shown a second yellow card for simulation, yet Eddie Howe’s men were awarded a penalty almost immediately after when Bruno Fernandes brought down Anthony Gordon just inside the box. The in-form forward stepped up to give the Toon Army the lead from 12 yards.

However, there was to be one more twist in a frantic end to the first half as United equalised through Casemiro, who nodded in from Fernandes’ free-kick into the box.

Despite going a man down before the break, the home side dominated possession in the early parts of the second half but failed to capitalise, with Gordon seeing an effort comfortably saved by Senne Lammens.

Carrick’s men struggled to make their numerical advantage count, which resulted in a double-substitution on the hour mark.

Instead, Newcastle should have restored their advantage on 66 minutes when Sandro Tonali’s corner to the back post was met by a sliding Gordon, but he failed to steer his effort on target.

The visitors began to dominate with 20 minutes remaining and should have gone ahead when Fernandes picked out Leny Yoro in the box, but the Frenchman’s header was stopped by Ramsdale.

Joshua Zirkzee was next to be denied by Ramsdale, who got a strong hand to save his dipping effort, and those saves proved pivotal when Newcastle substitute Osula stunned the visitors, cutting inside from the right flank before sending a stunning curling effort into the far corner in stoppage time.

That proved to be the winner and saw the Red Devils fail to strengthen their position inside the top four. Newcastle, meanwhile, claim their first PL victory at home in almost two months.

Ghana’s senior women’s team dominated the match, scoring three goals in the first half before Ajegipena Zakaria sealed the win with a late strike in the 88th minute, keeping them atop the standings.

Reflecting on the performance, Bjorkegren lauded the squad’s growth and cohesion.

“We trust our girls so much, and with every game and every camp, we are just getting better,” he said.
“I’m super happy we won today and the way we won 4-0. It was a deserved 4-0. It’s the best game I’ve ever seen this team play.”

The Black Queens are using the Pink Ladies Cup to prepare for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled in Morocco later this month. Their next match will be against Tanzania, a familiar opponent from the last WAFCON group stage, where Ghana won 4-1.

The midfielder joins Brann from National Women’s Soccer League side Gotham Football Club, seeking a platform to further her development and gain valuable playing experience.

“I chose Brann because I believe in the project, and it will give me the best opportunity for my development and playing experience,” Nyamekye said.

“Brann is a great team that is competing for several titles. I am a player with good overview, good ball control, and I am creative in the final third. I can also contribute by both scoring goals myself and setting up chances for my teammates,” she added.

Nyamekye, who spent part of this year on loan at Fort Lauderdale United with limited minutes, previously captained Dreamz Ladies.

She is currently featuring for the Ghana national team, the Black Queens, and was on the scoresheet in their 4-0 victory over Russia at the 2026 Pink Ladies Cup.

At just 20 years old, Nyamekye has already scored two goals for the Black Queens since making her debut.

Arteta doubles down after rivals’ set-piece criticism https://www.adomonline.com/arteta-doubles-down-after-rivals-set-piece-criticism/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 09:39:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637261 Mikel Arteta has responded to criticism of Arsenal’s tactics from rival managers by saying he is “upset” they “haven’t scored more” from corners.

The Gunners’ prowess at set-pieces continues to fuel their title charge, with Sunday’s victory over Chelsea the ninth time they have scored a match-winning goal from a corner this season.

But they have also been at the forefront of recent discussions around grappling and blocking at set-pieces, with Everton boss David Moyes identifying Arteta’s side as the trailblazers for the use of “dark arts”.

Fabian Hurzeler, whose Brighton said host the Premier League leaders on Wednesday, has called for stricter rules around set-pieces and criticised Arsenal for time-wasting.

Seagulls head coach Hurzeler claimed the Gunners sometimes wait “over one minute” to take their corners.

Arteta said such criticism was “part of the job” as he doubled down on their approach.

“I am upset we haven’t scored more and that we have conceded [from set-pieces] as well,” Arteta told a news conference.

“We want to be the best and most dominant team in every aspect of the game. That is the trajectory and the aim of this team.”

Arsenal have scored the most goals (58) and conceded the fewest (22) in the Premier League. Their goal difference of +36 is therefore the highest.

They are way ahead on goals scored from set-pieces, including penalties, with 21 compared to Manchester United’s 15 in second.

Sixteen of their goals this season – 27.6% – have come from corners. Spurs are top of that particular table, having scored 13 of their 38 goals from corners – a total of 34.2%.

Arteta said the increase in set-piece threat was because football is “evolving” and becoming “more and more difficult” from a tactical perspective.

He added: “Teams are adapting, teams know after every sequence of play – whether it is a throw-in, a restart of play, an open-pitch situation – after that, they know exactly what they have to do and everything is almost man to man.

“So it is not going to be a different game, unless we change the rules, because the evolution of the game is that.”

‘No clear rules any more’

Statistics show that, on average, no Premier League team take longer to restart from corners than Arsenal.

Asked why he believes Arsenal’s approach to set-pieces has received the level of attention it has, Hurzeler said: “There are no clear rules any more [around] how much time you can spend taking a corner or a throw-in.

“Some of the ways teams are blocking, there’s no real rule. Sometimes the referee whistles and it’s a foul, sometimes it isn’t a foul or they don’t whistle.

“[We need] a clear rule on how much time you can take for a corner, a free-kick, because no-one recognises it. When Arsenal have a corner and they are leading, sometimes they spend over one minute just to take a corner.”

Hurzeler also pointed to the responsibility he feels clubs have to ensure match-going fans are being provided with value for money.

“Every supporter pays a lot of money to watch our games and should see the same game time,” Hurzeler said.

“They want to see a football event, not maybe 50 minutes when the ball is in the game and 40 minutes when the game is not running,” Hurzeler said.

“But we won’t change these rules immediately. We know how important set-pieces are. At the moment it’s a big trend in the league and we definitely need to adapt to it.”

Matches involving Hurzeler’s Brighton have the ball in play 56.2% of the time – the fifth-highest in the league, above seventh-ranked Arsenal (55.7%).

The Gunners’ average delay time over free-kicks, goal-kicks and throw-ins is in keeping with other Premier League clubs.

But their average 44.35-second delay at corners is almost 50% longer than that of Chelsea, who they defeated with their 15th and 16th league goals from corner routines this season.

‘It’s gone too far’ – managers have their say

There have already been three more goals scored from corners in the Premier League this season (138) than in the whole of the previous campaign.

Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick said the situations inside the penalty area at set-pieces had “gone too far”.

“It wasn’t long ago we were told you couldn’t lay a hand on anyone in the box and it would be stamped out,” Carrick said at his news conference on Tuesday.

“It’s crept in. The success of set-pieces, corners in particular, probably in terms of being able to put so many bodies close together, has made more teams do it because the success rate is so high.

“It’s understandable why there are so many teams doing it. As a game, it doesn’t feel like we’ve got that balance right.”

His comments were made a day after Liverpool boss Arne Slot said he finds most Premier League games no longer a “joy to watch” and his “football heart doesn’t like” the increasing emphasis on set-pieces.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he understood Slot’s comments and agreed “in some ways”, but added: “It’s part of the game.”

“When I was a young boy we said the people in England celebrate corners and free-kicks like a goal. I remember perfectly, so nothing has changed in that way,” Guardiola said.

“Arsenal dictate how they do it and it is an important aspect. Four years ago in the NBA, the three-shot point was not involved as much but now so many teams do it. It is part of the dynamics.

“You can sit and complain but you have to adapt.”

Trump ‘does not care’ if Iran play at World Cup https://www.adomonline.com/trump-does-not-care-if-iran-play-at-world-cup-2/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 09:35:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637254 US President Donald Trump has said he “does not care” if Iran take part in this summer’s 2026 World Cup.

Trump’s comments come amid US and Israeli strikes on Iran, which has responded by launching attacks on US-allied states in the Gulf in an escalating conflict.

The US is co-hosting the World Cup which takes place between 11 June and 19 July, along with Canada and Mexico.

“I really don’t care,” Trump told Politico about Iran playing in the tournament.

“I think Iran is a very badly defeated country. They’re running on fumes.”

BBC Sport has approached Fifa for comment.

Iran have qualified for a fourth-consecutive World Cup and are scheduled to open their World Cup campaign against New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles before their final group game against Egypt in Seattle.

The country did not pull out of the competition last summer when the US bombed three nuclear facilities in the country.

But with the more serious current upheaval, the head of Iran’s football federation, Mehdi Taj, has reportedly cast doubt on their participation.

Taj told Iranian television that it was “far from our expectations that we can look at the World Cup with hope”. He added the country’s sports officials would decide if any action was necessary.

Fifa’s general secretary Mattias Grafstrom said on Saturday: “Our focus is to have a safe World Cup with everybody participating.”

Man Utd eye wingers, after getting rid under Amorim https://www.adomonline.com/man-utd-eye-wingers-after-getting-rid-under-amorim/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 09:32:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637251 Michael Carrick has said Manchester United could look to sign a left winger this summer – even though they spent the past three transfer windows under Ruben Amorim getting rid of wide players.

Historically, many successful United sides have been built around wingers.

George Best, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo are regarded among some of the club’s greatest players – while others such as Steve Coppell, Gordon Hill, Willie Morgan and Andrei Kanchelskis also made a significant impact.

Although not a winger in the orthodox sense, Busby Babe Eddie Colman was nicknamed ‘snake hips’ for his ability to change direction at top speed.

United began last season with five experienced wide players.

Between them, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Amad Diallo cost the club £173m.

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho both came through the United’s youth ranks, although the latter was at Atletico Madrid before moving to Manchester as a 16-year-old in 2020.

Sancho is currently on loan at Aston Villa, having spent last season at Chelsea, who paid a £5m clause to send the 25-year-old back to United last summer rather than sign him permanently.

His contract is set to expire in the summer, and it seems unlikely United will keep the England international, signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021. Solskjaer intended to play him on the right but the player said his preference was to play on the left.

Antony left for Real Betis in a £21.65m deal last September, a couple of days after Garnacho joined Chelsea for £40m.

Rashford, who also prefers to play on the left, spent the second half of last season at Villa following a fall-out with Amorim, and then joined Barcelona on loan last summer.

Barca have a £26m option to buy Rashford, and talks have started over the possibility of triggering it.

However, sources close to the player have indicated no agreement is in place – and given Rashford has two years left on his £325,000-a-week United contract, further negotiation is going to be required.

It leaves Amad as the only orthodox wide player available to Carrick, although he has also used Patrick Dorgu, who joined from Lecce as a wing-back under Amorim, in a more offensive role.

Although it is not clear yet who will be in charge once the season has reached its conclusion, Carrick has repeatedly said the decisions he is making are for the club’s long-term interests.

Asked if left-wing specifically was an area that might need addressing, Carrick replied: “I think you’re always looking at the balance of the team and the squad to give you the utmost flexibility, so it’s definitely something to look at, for sure.”

Pressed again, Carrick said: “Quite possibly.”

Diomande and Gordon linked

Carrick did state the situation “was not a huge concern at the moment” and that he felt there were options available to him that allowed him variety in attack.

“We can still be dangerous,” said the 44-year-old.

“Matheus [Cunha] has played that role and caused big problems and had big moments. When he plays wide, he is tough to stop one-on-one.”

But Cunha is happiest drifting away from the touchline and likes to get on the ball in deeper or more central positions.

In the junior ranks, Gibraltar international James Scanlon was virtually an ever-present in the Premier League 2 side for the first half of the season and is capable of playing in an attacking role on both sides of the pitch, but he has now joined League Two promotion chasers Swindon on loan.

England Under-20 international Shea Lacey made a huge impact in three substitute appearances for the senior team but he prefers to play on the right. In any event, he has only been involved once since getting sent off in the FA Cup third-round defeat by Brighton on 11 January, when he was an unused substitute against Fulham last month.

Few supporters would claim United were wrong to get rid of Sancho or Antony.

Some believe Amorim could have handled the Garnacho situation better, although the Argentina international is yet to impress on a consistent basis at Chelsea, while Rashford’s time at his boyhood club seemed to have run its course.

Nevertheless, at a time when United are trying to control their budget and costs across the club are being cut, the wide-left situation highlights an historical weakness in their recruitment strategy.

It also raises questions about the wisdom of hiring a coach like Amorim, whose tactics differed so significantly from what fans had been used to.

United were prepared to sanction the £65m signing of Antoine Semenyo in January, but the former Bournemouth man opted to join Manchester City.

Amorim wanted to use the money elsewhere in his squad. United’s refusal suggests they are targeting specific areas, and the left side of their attack is one of them.

They are among several high-profile Premier League clubs to be linked with RB Leipzig’s 19-year-old Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande, who is likely to cost around £70m if he opts to move in the summer.

Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon has also been mentioned, although it is not clear whether United have an interest in the England international.

United’s situation is complicated by the fact they are prioritising bringing in at least one, and possibly two central midfield players.

Experienced Brazil captain Casemiro is leaving at the end of the season and £50m Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte has only made three substitute appearances – totalling 27 minutes – under Carrick.

No changes can be made until the transfer window opens anyway, so, for now, Carrick must make the best of his present options.

“We’re always thinking of that perfect scenario of mixing players together and connections and seeing how it suits on the pitch,” he said.

“There’s different ways of doing it and we have really good options across the front line.”

Heated Doncic interaction ‘very normal’ – Redick https://www.adomonline.com/heated-doncic-interaction-very-normal-redick/ Wed, 04 Mar 2026 09:27:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2637161 Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick says he and star player Luka Doncic have a “great relationship” despite a heated exchange between the pair that went viral.

The Lakers were on a three-game losing streak going into Saturday’s game at the Golden State Warriors but were leading comfortably when Doncic was replaced late in the first quarter.

The Slovenian, 27, tried to avoid a fist bump from Redick as he walked to his seat on the bench, and the Lakers coach then followed Doncic down the sideline.

The pair exchanged words as Doncic took his seat before Redick turned to walk back towards half court.

As he did, Doncic got back to his feet and said more towards Redick while his team-mate Jarred Vanderbilt stood up, ostensibly to clap encouragement for the Lakers but also putting a barrier in front of Doncic, who sat back down moments later.

Speaking before Tuesday’s 110-101 win over the New Orleans Pelicans, Redick said: “I don’t know why it went viral. It felt very normal to me.

“I didn’t think much of it at the time, to be honest with you. I don’t think Luka did either.”

Doncic had claimed four points and three assists by that point, and returned on Saturday to finish with a game-high 26 points.

The six-time All-Star scored another game-high 27 points as the Lakers won a third straight game on Tuesday to stay sixth in the Western Conference standings.

“He and I have a great relationship,” Redick added. “I really value our relationship. And I think those things happen. Not every game, but they happen very frequently.

“It’s a competition. And there’s two guys here who, in this case, are trying to win a basketball game and be on the same page about stuff.”

The Western Conference leaders Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Chicago Bulls 116-108 on Tuesday while second-placed San Antonio Spurs thumped the Philadelphia 76ers 131-91.

The Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons suffered a 113-109 loss at the Cleveland Cavaliers, for whom Jaylon Tyson scored 22 points and new signing James Harden added 18, while the third-placed New York Knicks took advantage with a 111-95 win at the Toronto Raptors.
