Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Hadzide warned that if the party chooses a candidate without careful consideration, past controversies associated with that person could be used as a reference point to undermine the campaign.

“If we’re not careful and select just anyone, every time an old issue comes up, they’ll link it to our candidate. That can cost us dearly,” he said.

According to him, the decision to change a candidate should not be taken lightly, but must be aimed at helping the NPP win power in the 2028 elections.

“This is not about change for change’s sake. It’s about change that gives us a real shot at winning power in 2028 — for the sake of everyone in the party,” he added.

Mr. Hadzide stressed the need for deep thinking and unity in choosing a candidate, stressing that the party must select someone who appeals broadly to members across all levels.

“That’s why I believe Bryan Acheampong is the best option. He’s young, relatable, and well-liked by everyone in the party. I don’t think there’s anyone in the party who can say they have a problem with Bryan. He’s helped a lot of people — financially and otherwise.”

He described Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, as a “great unifying force” with no bad blood or divisions linked to his name.

“If there must be a change, then it must be Bryan. He represents boldness, unity, and forward-thinking. We need a leader who can take a decision and stand by it — Bryan is that kind of person,” Mr. Hadzide stressed.

“Where we are now, we need a man to lead us — and Bryan Acheampong is our best bet,” he concluded.

Mr. Acheampong has already declared his intention to contest the NPP’s flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He made the announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, where he sought their prayers and blessings.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

Ghanaians always prosper under NPP governments – Pius Hadzide [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaians-always-prosper-under-npp-governments-pius-hadzide-video/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 16:54:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550263 Spokesperson for Team Bryan Acheampong’s 2028 campaign, Pius Enam Hadzide, says history has shown that Ghanaians always enjoy better living conditions under New Patriotic Party (NPP) administrations.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Hadzide expressed concern about the party’s current standing, saying it was not where they hoped to be.

However, he remained confident that the NPP had always been the better choice for Ghanaians.

“Ask anyone — even our opponents will admit it — Ghanaians prosper more under NPP governments,” he stated.

He stressed several key policies and interventions introduced under various NPP administrations to support his claim.

These include the introduction of free basic education from primary to junior high school under former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and the school feeding programme which continues to support thousands of school children across the country.

“Who introduced school feeding? It was the NPP. Who made it possible for your child to go to school without paying a dime from primary to JHS? It was President Kufuor’s NPP government,” Mr. Hadzide noted.

He also cited the establishment of the Metro Mass Transit system, which he said greatly improved public transport and eased mobility for many citizens.

“Metro Mass was another NPP initiative — these are things that made life better for the ordinary Ghanaian,” he added.

Touching on more recent achievements, Mr. Hadzide pointed to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced by President Nana Akufo-Addo as a major relief for many families.

“Free SHS is one of the biggest social interventions in our history — it was the NPP that brought it,” he stated.

According to him, businesses also thrived under the NPP due to favorable policies and stable governance.

While acknowledging that there may have been “minor hitches” during the party’s tenure, he insisted that the overall impact of NPP governments had always been positive.

“Even if there were challenges, the truth is that NPP governments make life easier for Ghanaians. Businesses grow, children go to school, and families get some breathing space,” he explained.

Mr. Hadzide warned that the current conditions under the NDC government could lead the country back into hardship if Ghanaians were not careful.

“We are not in government today, and if we don’t work hard to return in 2028, Ghanaians may fall back into the mess we’ve seen before,” he cautioned.

He called on all NPP members to unite and work hard toward a return to power in the next election to continue improving the lives of Ghanaians.

NPP Patriotic Institute is refreshing start for our party – Sammi Awuku https://www.adomonline.com/npp-patriotic-institute-is-refreshing-start-for-our-party-sammi-awuku/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 10:09:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550017 Former National Lottery Authority boss and influential NPP stalwart, Sammi Awuku, is rallying party faithful behind what he calls a bold new mission, which is the launch of the NPP Patriotic Institute, a fresh push to revive the party’s fortunes ahead of 2028.

In a passionate post on Facebook, Awuku described the new institute as “a call to action, a fresh chapter, a bolder vision, and a rekindled patriotism,” adding that it could transform the party’s future direction and inject much-needed energy after its 2024 defeat.

He credited past and current party executives with finally bringing a long-cherished dream to life, praising them for creating a space to reflect, rebuild, and reposition for what he believes will be a triumphant return to power.

“In the face of every great comeback is a moment of deep reflection and strategic renewal,” Awuku wrote, urging supporters to “learn, rebuild, and arise again” for victory in 2028.

The Patriotic Institute is designed as a think-and-learn hub to train and develop party talent, sharpen ideological focus, and mentor the next generation of political leaders.

Plans include policy brainstorming sessions, leadership bootcamps, seminars on governance and democracy, and an archive chronicling the NPP’s historical journey.

According to party insiders, the institute is expected to energize the grassroots, redefine party strategy, and supply fresh intellectual firepower for the next electoral battle.

With the NPP in rebuilding mode after losing in 2024, Awuku’s rallying cry has struck a chord among supporters looking for a reset.

He ended his message with a note of determination: “Let’s arise again for a great comeback in 2028.”

Speaking at the high-profile event, the Speaker emphasized the deep-rooted ties between Ghana and Niger, grounded in shared history, regional solidarity, and mutual aspirations for peace, justice, and development.
He noted that Niger’s decision to engage diverse segments of society in rebuilding the nation echoes Ghana’s own democratic journey, particularly under former President Jerry John Rawlings, who led similar efforts through broad-based consultations to restore constitutional rule.

He reminded them that they carry the hopes and aspirations not just of Nigeriens but of an entire sub-region seeking peace and reform.

You should know better – MP tells Asiedu Nketia for calling EC incompetent [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/you-should-know-better-mp-tells-asiedu-nketia-for-calling-ec-incompetent-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:09:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548797 Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has criticised National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, for his persistent attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC), urging him to rather demonstrate leadership.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the MP said someone with Asiedu Nketia’s political experience should know better.

“Asiedu Nketia has done politics for long. He should be the one showing us the right thing. You don’t go around accusing the EC of being incompetent while you are the ones creating the problems” he said.

He warned that if these tensions are not properly addressed, it could lead to dangerous consequences for the country’s democracy.

“If this issue is not resolved, it can bring bigger problems. Every government may want to have their own EC, and that’s not good for democracy.”

Commenting on the possibility of a petition to the presidency for the removal of the EC Chair, Jean Mensa, he said:

“With what they are doing and saying, it won’t be shocking at all. But even if it gets there, I hope the judges and the committee that may look into the issue will rise to the occasion and serve the interest of the nation.”

He also alleged that the NDC has a history of pushing for the removal of key figures in state institutions.

“Their actions show that they will even be behind removing the EC Chair, just like they did to the Chief Justice.”

Baffour Awuah added that Ghanaians are closely observing the behaviour of the NDC and will respond at the right time.

“Ghanaians are watching Asiedu Nketia and his NDC people who are eager to see the removal of the EC. But when the time for elections comes, they will show you where power truly lies.”

His reaction follows Asiedu Nketia’s recent press briefing in which he described the EC’s leadership as unfit for purpose and demanded their removal, citing a pattern of alleged electoral mismanagement.

If the people who voted for you say E-Levy won’t help, why force it? – Eugene Antwi on NPP’s 2024 defeat https://www.adomonline.com/if-the-people-who-voted-for-you-say-e-levy-wont-help-why-force-it-eugene-antwi-on-npps-2024-defeat/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 11:58:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548606 Former Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections as more than just a political defeat.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Antwi said the results were a wake-up call for the party to reflect on its leadership approach and connection with the electorate.

“The 2024 election was not just a political loss. It was a wake-up call. At some point, as a leader, you need to sit down and listen to your people,” he said.

According to him, the NPP lost touch with the very people who voted them into power due to rigid systems and messaging that failed to resonate with the needs of ordinary Ghanaians.

“Our systems became too rigid, and our messaging disconnected from the people we were elected to serve,” he explained.

Mr. Antwi specifically cited the introduction of the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), which was widely criticized by the public.

“If the people who voted for you tell you the E-Levy won’t help them, why then do you go ahead and implement it?” he questioned.

2024 election was not just a politcal loss but a wake up call - Eugene Antwi

He also expressed concern over policy inconsistencies, pointing out that while ordinary Ghanaians were burdened with new taxes, others were living in luxury and avoiding basic obligations.

“Meanwhile, people have built big houses and are renting them out without paying property rates. There were a lot of things that just weren’t right. So how did we expect the masses to vote for us again?” he asked. “They definitely will vote against us, and that’s why we lost.”

Looking ahead, Eugene Boakye Antwi stressed the need for unity and reform within the party to stand a chance in the 2028 general elections.

“We need stability in the party. We must listen, adjust, and work to win back the trust of Ghanaians,” he added.

]]> Are we going to build a skyscraper? – Nana B questions Arthur Kennedy [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/are-we-going-to-build-a-skyscraper-nana-b-questions-arthur-kennedy-audio/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 10:15:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548502 National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has responded to Dr. Arthur Kennedy’s concerns about the timing of the party’s presidential primaries.

Following the NPP’s announcement to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, Dr. Kennedy questioned the decision, asking, “Why pick it in early 2026 when you could wait till mid-2027 or late 2027?”

He argued that the party’s internal discourse had reached a boiling point, and selecting a flagbearer at this stage might be premature and potentially disastrous.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B, who disagreed with Dr. Kennedy’s stance, described the move as a success for the party.

According to him, the NPP’s structures are already firmly in place, and it is misleading to liken the party to a building under construction.

“Are we going to build a house? The NPP structure is already there, so what are we going to build? Are we going to build a skyscraper?” he quizzed.

Nana B argued that 99% of the tensions and internal wrangling within the party stem from the presidential primaries.

“The comparison with a building is totally unacceptable because nobody has said after the presidential primaries, we will hold national, regional, constituency, and polling station elections. We only agreed on the presidential,” he stated.

This is a party that has been branded tribal; we cannot perpetuate it – Kufuor to NPP https://www.adomonline.com/this-is-a-party-that-has-been-branded-tribal-we-cannot-perpetuate-it-kufuor-to-npp/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 14:42:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548274 Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has condemned religious and tribal bigotry, which are creeping into the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as the campaign for the party’s 2028 flagbearer intensifies.

At the launch of the NPP’s ideological institute, the Patriotic Institute, in Accra this morning, President Kufuor expressed concern about the development, saying such divisive tribal and ethnic utterances by some members of the NPP, targeted at others, lend credence to the age-old accusation that the NPP is a “tribal party.”

“We are democratic and we uphold common humanity,” President Kufuor said of the values of the NPP, attracting wide applause from his fellow patriots present.

“Democracy doesn’t go in for tribe, religion, and gender. It is the individual. One man, one vote. And if we want power, we want to present a person who will be convincing to the generality of the electorate.”

“Can this man we are presenting help solve problems for the community at large so the benefits spread across the board for all?”

The former President urged members of the NPP to look at issues “this way if we tell the truth to ourselves.”

He expressed worry that such bigotry, being perpetuated by some members of the party, further casts doubt on the NPP as a national party.

“We may see that the way we have been brushed by our opponents from way back; oh, you’re a tribal party. These days, we are even including religion. You do that and it comes from our own mouths, then I tell you we are perpetuating it.”

President Kufuor called for an end to this unfortunate development to help the NPP “get out of the rat hole.”

It’s better to be a messenger of a ruling party than a General Secretary in opposition – Kufuor to NPP members https://www.adomonline.com/its-better-to-be-a-messenger-of-a-ruling-party-than-a-general-secretary-in-opposition-kufuor-to-npp-members/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 13:58:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548231

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has issued a sobering reminder to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the true essence of political power.

Speaking at the launch of the NPP’s newly established Patriotic Institute in Accra, Mr. Kufuor stated, “It is better to be a messenger of a party in power than the general secretary of a party in opposition.”

The Patriotic Institute, a certificate-awarding institution, is aimed at deepening ideological education, building leadership capacity, and enhancing the party’s governance preparedness.

The event brought together several leading party figures, including NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who highlighted the institute’s critical role in reshaping the party’s direction and vision for the future.

Addressing party faithful, the former President stressed that the ultimate objective of any political party must be to win and retain power, cautioning that all efforts, resources, and strategies should revolve around that singular goal.

Mr. Kufuor’s comments come at a pivotal time for the NPP, which is still reeling from its 2024 electoral defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The party has since been grappling with internal divisions and early jostling for the 2028 presidential ticket.

His concerns echo recent remarks by Okaikwei Central MP, Patrick Boamah, who revealed that the former President has been increasingly worried about the NPP’s fading internal unity and what he perceives as a growing leadership vacuum within the party.

Did you have any experience before becoming MP? – Nana B questions Adomako Kissi [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/did-you-have-any-experience-before-becoming-mp-nana-b-questions-adomako-kissi-audio/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 13:34:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548179 The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has criticised former Anyaa-Sowutuom MP, Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi, over his comments regarding the composition of the party’s national executives.

Dr Kissi had argued that, unlike the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the NPP’s national executives lack parliamentary experience — a shortcoming he believes weakens the party’s strategic direction.

But Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, described the remarks as misplaced during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

While acknowledging that the current executives may not have parliamentary backgrounds, he argued that they possess expertise from diverse professional fields, which makes them competent and capable.

“If Dr Kissi’s argument is anything to go by, was he ever an MP before his election in 2020?” he questioned.

“We need to be measured in our language. These same ‘experienced’ people he’s referring to have also lost elections before, so what exactly is his point?

“I was Deputy Director of the National Service Scheme, so I have experience in corporate governance. The General Secretary managed a huge institution like the Youth Employment Agency. John Boadu, for instance, was never an MP but served successfully as General Secretary — with a wealth of experience across various party roles. We in the NPP have our own unique strengths too.”

Why I don’t support MMDCEs endorsing flagbearer hopefuls – Nana B [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-dont-support-mmdces-endorsing-flagbearer-hopefuls-nana-b-video/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 10:56:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548091 National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, says he is not in support of the growing trend of endorsements by groups within the party for specific flagbearer hopefuls ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B stressed the need for cohesion within the party, cautioning that such endorsements risk dividing the ranks.

“We all want party cohesion. When former MMDCEs endorse one candidate and another group supports a different one, it creates unnecessary tension. That is why I don’t support such endorsements,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of recent public declarations by some former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) backing specific presidential hopefuls.

A group operating under the banner Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia recently endorsed the former Vice President as the preferred flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

Not long after, another set of former MMDCEs was reported to have paid a courtesy call on former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, during which they also declared their support for him.

But according to Nana B, such public displays of support are premature and could derail the party’s internal unity efforts.

“This is one of the reasons the leadership of the party has called a meeting with all presidential aspirants on July 3, 2025. We want to meet them, talk to them about the guidelines the National Council has approved, and advise them to speak to their followers so that we can maintain some sanity before the elections,” he stated.

NANA B ON MMDCES SUPPORT

Asked if he personally supports any of the aspirants, Nana B was emphatic.

“I don’t have a choice. We, as national officers, do not have a preferred candidate. Whoever the party elects to lead us, we will fully support,” he affirmed.

He clarified that there are no sanctions at the moment for the former MMDCEs, but the party’s leadership is taking steps to manage the situation through dialogue.

“We are not punishing anyone. This meeting is to help provide guidance so that everyone is on the same page moving forward,” he added.

NPP refers Abronye DC to Disciplinary Committee over unguarded comments https://www.adomonline.com/npp-refers-abronye-dc-to-disciplinary-committee-over-unguarded-comments/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 09:41:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548055 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, to the party’s Disciplinary Committee over what it described as “unguarded public comments” and a breach of directives issued by the National Council.

This was contained in a statement issued by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, following a National Steering Committee meeting.

While the party did not disclose the full details of the alleged infractions, it confirmed that Abronye’s conduct contravened internal guidelines designed to safeguard unity ahead of the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

“In line with the party’s constitutional processes, the Bono Regional Chairman has been referred to the Disciplinary Committee for breaching directives of the National Council and making unguarded public comments,” the statement read.

The referral comes at a critical time for the NPP as it works to maintain internal cohesion ahead of its flagbearer elections, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

As part of broader efforts to reinforce discipline and unity, the party has also directed an immediate cessation of all unauthorised caucuses and meetings involving current or former executives and presidential aspirants.

“The Party wishes to once again remind members of their constitutional obligation to protect party unity, to abide by and publicly support the Party’s decisions,” the statement emphasised.

Additionally, the NPP has summoned all declared presidential aspirants to a joint meeting with the National Steering Committee and the National Council of Elders on July 3, 2025. The meeting is expected to address “matters of mutual interest” and set the tone for a competitive but orderly internal campaign.

Notable flagbearer hopefuls expected to attend include former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Abetifi MP Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and former Essikado-Ketan MP Joe Ghartey.

The NPP’s firm stance on internal discipline and cohesion underscores its desire to avoid factionalism as it prepares for its presidential primary in January 2026 ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Our “Thank You Tour” was turning into a popularity contest – Nana Akomea https://www.adomonline.com/our-thank-you-tour-was-turning-into-a-popularity-contest-nana-akomea/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 16:54:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547846 Former Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) post-election Thank You tour was gradually becoming a popularity contest instead of a unity-building exercise.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Akomea expressed concern that some party members used the tour to showcase their loyalty to certain flagbearer hopefuls, rather than promoting party unity.

“Our Thank You tour started becoming a popularity contest. People felt they needed to show they supported one person more than the other, and that created tension,” he said.

His comments follow widespread controversies that surrounded the party’s nationwide tour in May this year.

Former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong even pulled out of the tour after a student was reportedly stabbed during one of the tour’s events at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

“In all the regions we visited, there were misunderstandings. At Berekum and Bantama, there was chaos – and this was supposed to be a Thank You tour,” Nana Akomea lamented.

He also cited an incident involving the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, saying, “Even when Chairman Wontumi was arrested at EOCO, people were fighting over who would pay his bail – just to show who supports who in the flagbearer race. That was pure showmanship.”

According to the former National Communications Director, the NPP is becoming increasingly divided along lines of religion, ethnicity, and loyalty to various flagbearer hopefuls.

“There is division over religion, over tribe, and all because of people eyeing the flagbearer slot. This is not good for the party,” he stressed.

He revealed that the growing disunity forced the party’s leadership to take swift action.

“The National Council decided we can’t wait any longer for the congress. With all these divisions, sitting idle was not an option,” he explained. “That is why we have scheduled the flagbearer election for January 2026 — to end all the chaos and confusion.”

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced that its presidential primaries will be held on Saturday, 31st January 2026, following a crucial meeting by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, 17th June 2025.

David Prah backs Adutwum as NPP’s hope for 2028 https://www.adomonline.com/david-prah-backs-adutwum-as-npps-hope-for-2028/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 12:25:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547740 Former Eastern Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), David Prah, has urged supporters of the various flagbearer hopefuls to engage in issue-based campaigning and refrain from personal attacks.

He also called for a ceasefire among supporters, stressing that campaigns based on tribalism and ethnicity will only cause harm to the party and lead to disunity.

Speaking on Burning Issues on Adom FM, hosted by Akua Boakyewaa Yiadom, the former Deputy Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) warned that insults and tribal politics could make it difficult for the party to unite behind one candidate after the primaries.

“After the contest, the party will have to campaign for one candidate who emerges as the flagbearer, and if supporters continue with insults, tribalism, and ethnic campaigning, it will be difficult to market that candidate to win power in 2028,” he stated.

Mr. Prah, who is supporting Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to become the NPP’s flagbearer, described him as a unifier and transformational leader who, if elected, will unite the party and help recapture power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the next general election.

“Even though Dr. Bawumia, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, and Kennedy Agyapong are all qualified to lead the NPP, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum stands tall among them. He is a unifier, hardworking, connected to the grassroots of the party, and has innovative ideas that can help turn the fortunes of this country around,” Mr. Prah said.

He also pointed to Dr. Adutwum’s impressive track record as Education Minister, which has earned him praise from many Ghanaians who are calling for him to lead the country.

“The world is moving at a fast pace, and we cannot continue doing things the same way. We need someone like Dr. Adutwum as President to bring his innovative ideas to bear for the benefit of the citizenry,” he concluded.

Ghanaian filmmaker and staunch New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Socrate Safo, has expressed frustration over what he describes as the party’s lack of appreciation for creatives within its ranks.

Speaking with Halifax Ansah-Addo on Okay FM in Accra, Safo — a former Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission on Culture — said he envies how the National Democratic Congress (NDC) consistently recognises and elevates creatives and cultural figures.

“I jealous them. Let me confess. I jealous them. I feel that the NDC is respecting the mental fortitude of the creatives. They are listening and they have not stopped,” he stated.

“I look at my colleagues — the Rex Omars, the KODs, Abeiku Santanas. How many people didn’t we have in the NPP? What did they do for us? You go and they look at you in a condescending manner, thinking they are better than you. We had creatives who could do excellent jobs, but they were overlooked just because they claim we don’t have degrees.”

His comments came in reaction to President John Mahama’s recent appointment of actress Kalsoume Sinare as Ghana’s Ambassador to Spain — a move Safo praised, using it to highlight broader issues within his own party.

Safo, known for directing and producing numerous Ghanaian films and advocating for cultural development, said the NPP has often marginalised creatives, viewing them as less qualified due to a lack of formal academic credentials.

He added that during the NPP’s time in power, creatives were rarely given influential roles, unlike in the NDC, where such individuals are seen as valuable contributors to national development.

According to Safo, the NDC has shown a stronger commitment to integrating arts and culture into governance — a gesture he believes the NPP must emulate if it wants to fully harness the potential of the country’s creative talents.

Kufuor worried about state of NPP – Okaikwei Central MP https://www.adomonline.com/kufuor-worried-about-state-of-npp-okaikwei-central-mp/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 09:09:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547568 Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Boamah, has revealed that former President John Agyekum Kufuor is deeply troubled by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) current state.

According to Mr. Boamah, as a founding figure of the NPP and a revered statesman, Mr. Kufuor has not hidden his discomfort with the party’s current direction.

He disclosed this during an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV, citing a recent conversation he had with the former President at a funeral.

“He is worried about the state of the party, that I can tell you for free,” Boamah stated. “I saw him on Friday at late Justice Gbadegbe’s funeral. The first question he’ll ask you is, ‘How is the party front?’ Because it is the party that made him. It is part of him, so he must be worried, Bernard,” he bemoaned.

Boamah’s comments come amid intensifying tensions within the NPP over its direction and leadership, sparking calls for reconciliation and a renewed focus on unity.

Mr. Boamah believes that the two leaders command respect and authority, and as former presidents, their intervention can help reunite party members.

He made the passionate appeal in an interview on Accra-based Channel One TV amidst growing internal tensions within the party.

“This party has produced two presidents. We are fortunate to have two former presidents alive. I am calling on them to call for some action and order in the party because this party produced them.

“If we are going through this turmoil, we ask that they call people round the table and have a heart-to-heart chat with them,” he stated.

Declaring state of emergency over galamsey premature – Mustapha Gbande https://www.adomonline.com/declaring-state-of-emergency-over-galamsey-premature-mustapha-gbande/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 09:09:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547179 A Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency and Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has warned against impulsive calls to declare a state of emergency in response to illegal mining, insisting that the government’s ongoing measures are both visible and effective.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Gbande emphasised that declaring a state of emergency is not a decision to be taken lightly or without solid justification.

He urged the public to support the government’s efforts rather than rush to make drastic demands.

“We shouldn’t be so quick to call for a state of emergency. This is not something you simply impose. Look at the situation today—forest reserves have effectively become no-go areas. We have witnessed calculated, precise military operations targeting these hotspots. The evidence is clear: many of these forest reserves are being reclaimed,” he explained.

Highlighting improvements in institutional efficiency, Mr Gbande said, “We are making sure that the responsible institutions are not only functioning but operating more effectively than ever before. Would you say we are doing nothing? Should we suddenly declare a state of emergency now, when the cedi is stabilising and the economy is showing signs of revival largely thanks to gold regulations?”

He also praised the commitment of key government officials, noting, “As far as I’m concerned, I have already spoken about the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources’ dedication and contribution. For the first time, I have also highlighted the unprecedented resolve of the Minister for the Interior, under whose watch offenders are being extradited and arrested.”

Mr Gbande further reminded Ghanaians that, “The government has made it absolutely clear that anyone involved in illegal mining will face the full force of the law. It is therefore incumbent upon all of us to expose those, both within and outside government, who have engaged in or supported illegal mining.”

He emphasised the need for careful management, stating, “This is a matter we must handle with tact,” rather than rushing into decisions.

Kalsoume Sinare, Namoale, 13 others land ambassadorial roles under Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/kalsoume-sinare-namoale-13-others-land-ambassadorial-roles-under-mahama/ Sun, 22 Jun 2025 13:16:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547018

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated a new batch of Ghanaian diplomats, including popular actress Kalsoume Sinare, former La-Dadekotopon MP Nii Amasah Namoale, and ex-Kumasi Mayor Kojo Bonsu.

In total, 15 distinguished individuals have been selected for ambassadorial and high commissioner roles.

Among the appointees are distinguished academics such as former Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso, and the University of Cape Coast’s first female Pro Vice-Chancellor, Associate Professor Dora Francisca Edu-Buandoh.

These appointments, subject to parliamentary vetting and approval, reflect President Mahama’s strategic blend of seasoned politicians, public figures, and technocrats to advance Ghana’s interests globally.

A letter dated June 10, 2025, from the Office of the President and signed by Presidential Secretary Callistus Mahama, PhD, indicated that the nominations were made in consultation with the Council of State, pursuant to Article 74 of the 1992 Constitution.

Veteran actress and former model Kalsoume Sinare has been tapped to serve as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain. Known for her decades-long presence in the Ghanaian movie industry and her outspoken support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sinare’s nomination comes amid reports of internal party consultations.

Her cousin, Alhaji Said Sinare—a respected NDC figure and former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia—was reportedly also under consideration for a diplomatic role.

Nii Amasah Namoale, a long-standing member of the NDC and former Deputy Minister of Agriculture, has been nominated as Ghana’s Ambassador to Brazil. Namoale, an agronomist by training, served as a Member of Parliament between 2005 and 2017. His wealth of experience in politics and governance is expected to enhance Ghana’s diplomatic footprint in South America.

Kojo Bonsu, a former sports administrator and ex-Mayor of Kumasi, is also on the list of nominees, representing the blend of leadership President Mahama is assembling for Ghana’s foreign missions.

If religion was a factor, I would’ve stepped aside – Dr Bawumia warns against tribal politics in NPP https://www.adomonline.com/if-religion-was-a-factor-i-wouldve-stepped-aside-dr-bawumia-warns-against-tribal-politics-in-npp/ Sat, 21 Jun 2025 20:54:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547010 Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has cautioned members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against resorting to religious and tribal sentiments as the party gears up for its 2026 presidential primaries and the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in the Ashanti Region on Saturday, June 21, Dr Bawumia described recent attempts to inject religious and ethnic bias into the party’s internal politics as “very dangerous” and a threat to the unity and strength of the NPP.

“It is very, very important that we don’t allow people to come in with explanations that are not factual, that are made up, and that divide our party,” he said.

“We are a united party, encompassing people from all ethnic groups, all religions… We are part of the elephant family.”

Dr Bawumia noted that findings from the Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye Constitutional Committee Report and other research show clearly that religion and ethnicity did not influence the outcome of the 2024 elections.

“My 4.7 million votes, was it only Muslims who voted for me? It’s not possible. They were all different voters,” he stressed.

He rejected the notion that a candidate’s faith should determine their electability and expressed disappointment in those attempting to use religion or tribalism to gain political advantage within the party.

“If that was the case, I wouldn’t have contested at all. I would have stepped aside because I’m not a selfish person. I value the party…. I will not jeopardise the ability of the party to win the 2028 election. It’s too important. I would have stepped aside,” he said.

The remarks come amid increasing speculation and internal jostling within the NPP ahead of the January 2026 presidential primaries.

Dr Bawumia is widely considered a frontrunner in the race and has consistently positioned himself as a candidate who prioritises party unity and national cohesion over personal ambition.

IGP has impounded over 1,200 excavators as gov’t steps up galamsey fight – Shamima Muslim https://www.adomonline.com/igp-has-impounded-over-1200-excavators-as-govt-steps-up-galamsey-fight-shamima-muslim/ Sat, 21 Jun 2025 12:00:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546927 Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has revealed that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has impounded a total of 1,250 excavators at various ports across the country.

She said this forms part of efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey in the country.

“I want to assure Ghanaians that the government, through the IGP (Christian Tetteh Yohuno), who is really now the lead in terms of fighting the galamsey, has impounded 1,250 excavators at our ports,” she disclosed this during her appearance on JoyNews’s Newsfile programme on Saturday, 21st June.

According to Ms Muslim, the police, in collaboration with relevant authorities, are currently investigating the reasons behind the importation of such a large number of heavy-duty machines, adding that the government is also working closely with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) to track all excavators currently in use across the country.

“We are working with DVLA to track all these excavators because obviously there are supply and demand issues, so we are trying to deal with those blockages,” adding that “What are these excavators coming to do? And if you have no proof that you are bringing in these excavators for construction works, you don’t dare to clear these excavators.”

Ms Muslim emphasised that these interventions form part of the broader strategy by the current NDC administration to curb the menace of illegal mining, which continues to damage Ghana’s environment and threaten its economic integrity.

The tracking and regulation of excavators, she said, are critical to ending the indiscriminate degradation of land and water bodies.

The spokesperson reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring environmental order and holding accountable those who fuel the galamsey economy.

Nyaho-Tamakloe flaws NPP’s leadership choice of early flagbearer election https://www.adomonline.com/nyaho-tamakloe-flaws-npps-leadership-choice-of-early-flagbearer-election/ Sat, 21 Jun 2025 11:51:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546922 A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has strongly criticised the party’s decision to elect a presidential candidate before the reorganisation of its internal structures, describing the move as unconstitutional and strategically flawed.

According to Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, the decision to proceed with the selection of a flagbearer ahead of electing new national, regional, constituency, and polling station executives contradicts the laid-down processes outlined in the NPP’s constitution. He warned that the party’s failure to respect its own rules is a dangerous signal of weak leadership and internal dysfunction.

“In a party that has just lost a major election, it is critical to conduct a thorough analysis of what went wrong. Rushing to elect a presidential candidate without honest reflection is a mistake,” he said. “This process appears to be skewed in favour of a particular individual, ignoring genuine concerns raised by notable party figures.”

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe further questioned the credibility of the current party leadership, whom he holds responsible for the NPP’s devastating electoral defeat in the 2024 general elections. He argued that the current executives lack the moral authority and legitimacy to lead the party through such an important reorganisation process.

“The leadership that led the party into defeat cannot be trusted to conduct a credible process that aims at returning the party to power in 2028,” he stated. “We need a transparent, inclusive approach that strictly adheres to the party’s constitution if we are serious about rebuilding the NPP.”

I am not happy with how Mahama is dealing with galamsey – Prof Bokpin https://www.adomonline.com/i-am-not-happy-with-how-mahama-is-dealing-with-galamsey-prof-bokpin/ Sat, 21 Jun 2025 11:09:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546906 Renowned Economist and Finance Professor at the University of Ghana, Prof. Godfred A. Bokpin, has expressed disappointment over President John Mahama’s approach to tackling illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

He criticised the President for failing to demonstrate the same level of commitment to addressing the menace as he has shown in other sectors of the economy.

Speaking on JoyNews’s Newsfile on Saturday, 21st June, Prof. Bokpin noted, “Mr President, when it comes to how you are dealing with irresponsible mining, I am afraid, I am not with you.”

The professor urged the president to take bold, decisive steps to end the environmental destruction and lawlessness associated with illegal mining.

Prof. Bokpin’s remarks come at a time when public concern over the impact of galamsey continues to rise. Ghana has witnessed widespread deforestation, pollution of key water bodies, and the displacement of communities due to unregulated mining activities.

Kwakye Ofosu reveals money saved from paid TV ban at Jubilee House https://www.adomonline.com/kwakye-ofosu-reveals-money-saved-from-paid-tv-ban-at-jubilee-house/ Sat, 21 Jun 2025 10:24:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546885 The administration of President John Dramani Mahama has implemented a drastic cost-cutting measure at the Jubilee House, the seat of government, by cancelling all paid television subscriptions in a bid to demonstrate fiscal prudence.

This decisive move has resulted in significant monthly savings of approximately GH₵120,000—funds the government plans to redirect toward more pressing national development needs.

The revelation was made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, during an interview with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that the decision forms part of a broader strategy by the Mahama-led government to curb what it identifies as wasteful public expenditure, particularly within the presidency.

The discovery of the substantial spending emerged during a comprehensive review of the operational costs inherited upon assuming office.

“When we came to the Jubilee House, there were multiple subscriptions in addition to the local channels that we watched,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu disclosed. “When we took stock and did the calculations, we realised we were spending about GH₵120,000 monthly just on satellite subscriptions. President Mahama has cancelled all of that.”

This monthly saving translates into an impressive GH₵1.44 million annually—a substantial sum in the context of Ghana’s national budget and ongoing fiscal challenges.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu passionately questioned the rationale behind such lavish spending on entertainment when critical community needs remain unmet.

He drew a stark contrast to illustrate the administration’s new priorities.

“There are communities where a broken water pump costing GH₵1,000 is all that stands between them and access to clean water. Yet, here we were spending GH₵120,000 just to watch TV,” he stated, noting that the monthly savings could repair 120 such water pumps—or 1,440 annually—providing essential services to hundreds of thousands of Ghanaians.

The administration is actively promoting this cancellation as a tangible example of its commitment to fiscal discipline.

The move sends a clear message that resources, particularly at the highest levels of government, will be rigorously scrutinised and redirected to more impactful and essential areas of national development.

It also aims to build public trust by demonstrating that every cedi counts in the quest for a more efficient and responsive government.

I’ll resign if… – Nhyiaeso MP says after Bawumia’s endorsement meeting [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/ill-resign-if-nhyiaeso-mp-says-after-bawumias-endorsement-meeting-listen/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 11:04:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546662 Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Stephen Amoah, has claimed that the camp of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is overstating the level of support it enjoys within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His comments follow a visit by about 60 NPP MPs to Dr. Bawumia’s office in Accra to publicly declare their support for his presidential bid.

Dr. Amoah, who is aligned with the campaign of Kennedy Agyapong, expressed doubt over the authenticity of the support shown, suggesting that the turnout did not reflect true loyalty.

Nhyiaeso MP
Nhyiaeso MP Stephen Amoah

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, the MP insisted that some of the MPs who appeared in the group photo actually support other candidates.

“I know some MPs who were in that meeting but have different preferences. People can always change their minds when they consider the bigger picture and what Ghanaians expect from us,” he said.

He went further to challenge the narrative, saying: “We all saw the video, but not everyone in it supports Dr. Bawumia. I can count about seven people who were there but are not genuinely behind him. I vow that if those individuals go into an election and vote for Bawumia and he wins all their votes, I will resign.”

Despite refusing to give specific figures, Dr. Amoah expressed confidence in strong support for Kennedy Agyapong among MPs.

The NPP has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, with early endorsements already highlighting what is expected to be a fiercely contested internal race.

I spoke to some MPs, they said it was cosmetic – Appiah-Kubi on Bawumia’s endorsement meeting https://www.adomonline.com/i-spoke-to-some-mps-they-said-it-was-cosmetic-appiah-kubi-on-bawumias-endorsement-meeting/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 10:08:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546580 Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has downplayed the significance of the recent endorsement of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by over 60 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs), describing it as “cosmetic” and politically calculated.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Appiah-Kubi said he was not surprised by the development, insisting that the turnout of MPs did not necessarily reflect genuine support for Dr. Bawumia.

“I was not surprised at all. The fact that many people were there doesn’t mean they all support him.”

On Thursday, June 20, about 67 NPP MPs visited Dr. Bawumia at his office in Accra to formally declare their support for his presidential bid.

However, Mr. Appiah-Kubi believes many of them attended only out of obligation or pressure.

APPIAH KUBI ON BAWUMIA SUPPORT

“Some of the MPs told me personally that the meeting was cosmetic. They were called and told that Dr. Bawumia wanted to meet them. At that point, you can’t say no. But that doesn’t mean they support him” he said.

The former lawmaker added that political optics often mislead the public, recalling a similar incident involving Kennedy Agyapong years ago.

“I remember when Kennedy Agyapong also called on some MPs while seeking to be flagbearer. Many went to meet him, even though they didn’t support him—and Ken himself knew this,” he said.

According to Mr. Appiah-Kubi, more than half of the MPs who showed up at Dr. Bawumia’s meeting do not actually back him.

“If you say that all those people support him, then you don’t understand the work of a politician. Most of them only went because they were called to join the group” he stressed.

He said he had personally spoken to at least four MPs who confirmed they did not back the Vice President but joined the meeting out of political courtesy.

“The truth is hard for Ghanaians. People are afraid to speak openly, so they follow the crowd even when they don’t believe in it. That’s what is pulling us back” he said.

Why police are holding back on Ablekuma North collation – EC explains https://www.adomonline.com/why-police-are-holding-back-on-ablekuma-north-collation-ec-explains/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 09:26:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546553 The Electoral Commission (EC) has explained that the delayed collation of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results is due to pending legal advice from the Attorney General’s Department.

According to the Commission, it has made several attempts to complete the process but has been unable to proceed due to the absence of police protection.

The Deputy EC Chairperson, Dr. Bossman Asare, disclosed this during a briefing in Parliament on Thursday, June 19, 2025, noting that both the Police and the National Security Taskforce have stated they are awaiting legal direction from the Attorney General before taking any action.

He explained that during a scheduled meeting on April 10, 2025, the Commission was informed that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had travelled to Bawku due to a conflict situation and would be briefed on the issue upon his return.

Subsequently, a letter was written to the Election Security Taskforce on May 2, 2025, requesting a follow-up meeting on May 8 to discuss the way forward.

“At the scheduled meeting on May 8, the collation process was agreed to be completed on May 15, 2025, at the old quarters of the Commission,” Dr. Asare said.

However, just two days before the scheduled date, the Police invited the EC to a meeting on May 13, where they revealed that a case concerning the Ablekuma North Constituency was pending before the Supreme Court. As a result, the Police said they could not provide security for the EC to complete the collation, arguing that doing so could constitute contempt of court.

Dr. Asare said the EC subsequently wrote to clarify that there was no injunction or legal process currently preventing the collation.

“The National Police Service and the National Security Taskforce, in response, informed the Commission that the matter had been referred to the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice for legal advice. They further stated that due to this referral, the National Security Taskforce would pause all action until the legal advice is received. Since then, we have followed up with the Police, and they have indicated they are still awaiting the AG’s advice,” he added.

Despite the delays, Dr. Asare reaffirmed the Commission’s readiness to complete the collation process as soon as security support is provided.

Education Ministry record alone won’t earn you flagbearer slot – Vanderpuye cautions Adutwum https://www.adomonline.com/education-ministry-record-alone-wont-earn-you-flagbearer-slot-vanderpuye-cautions-adutwum/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 10:17:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546286 National Coordinator of the District Roads Improvement Programme (DRIP), Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has advised former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum to tread carefully as he campaigns for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearership.

Dr. Adutwum, who officially announced his intention to contest the position on June 18, 2025, declared his readiness to lead the party into the next general election. In a Facebook post, he stated, “With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the Flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party.”

However, appearing on Channel One TV, Mr. Vanderpuye noted that while Dr. Adutwum’s calm disposition and decision to run are commendable, he should not hinge his candidacy solely on his record at the Ministry of Education.

“It is good that Adutwum wants to contest the flagbearership. He has a very calm demeanour. But I don’t want him to premise his qualification on his performance at the Ministry of Education,” Vanderpuye cautioned.

He acknowledged that Dr. Adutwum’s tenure had its merits but also came with significant shortcomings.

“His performance is 50-50. There are things he did right, but there are also a lot of things he did wrong, which won’t give him the credibility he is seeking.”

Vanderpuye encouraged a more grounded and relatable campaign style that would connect better with party delegates and the broader electorate.

“He should go out there as Adutwum, a servant of this country. ‘I have served. I may not have achieved a perfect score, but I have served in humility and respect.’ Then people will assess him on that basis.”

He further warned that negative public perceptions of Dr. Adutwum’s tenure as minister could become a political liability.

“If people have issues about your tenure as minister, they will use that to punish you.”

The NPP is expected to officially open nominations for the flagbearer race ahead of the party’s internal elections scheduled for January 2026.

Justin Kodua reveals why NPP is holding early presidential primaries [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/justin-kodua-reveals-why-npp-is-holding-early-presidential-primaries-video/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 17:02:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546112 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has justified the party’s decision to hold an early presidential primary, saying it will ease internal tensions and help prepare for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kodua explained that social media now plays a critical role in shaping perceptions about party matters.

“Unlike some years back, social media has become very active and influential in our internal party matters. When something happens, emotions rise quickly, and it creates confusion and tension,” he said.

He observed that many supporters are more concerned about who becomes the next flagbearer than the broader national elections.

“Right now, if you observe commentary and campaign trends, people are not talking much about national elections but more about who becomes the party’s next presidential candidate. That tells you something,” he noted.

According to him, conducting the presidential primaries early will bring unity to the party and help calm nerves.

“Once a leader is chosen, the confusion will reduce. We’ll have someone to rally behind, and someone who can speak boldly on behalf of the party,” he said.

Mr. Kodua added that the NPP, now in opposition, needs a strong flagbearer to keep the government on its toes.

“We need a leader who can respond directly to the governing president. We can’t remain silent. Ghanaians must know we are reorganising and ready to win 2028,” he said.

He acknowledged that the party’s 2024 electoral defeat was painful and has prompted members to push for bold reforms.

“Everyone in the party has been hurt by the 2024 loss. That’s why we’re making drastic decisions, including the early presidential primaries, to show we’re serious about bouncing back.”

On the process leading to the new primary date, he said the National Council approved January 31, 2026, after reviewing recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee.

“As for the date and venue, it’s not for the Council to decide. That power lies with the National Council, and they’ve already approved it in line with Article 13(11) of our constitution.”

He revealed that though there were differing opinions on the timing, the decision to hold the primaries early was ultimately accepted.

“There were discussions both for and against the early primary. But in the end, there was no real opposition to the idea of doing it early.”

Meanwhile, a nine-member committee chaired by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu has been tasked with planning the July 2025 National Delegates Conference, where other constitutional amendments will be considered.

Ablekuma North collation: Police playing funny games with us – NPP https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-collation-police-playing-funny-games-with-us-npp/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 16:40:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546103 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the Ghana Police Service of deliberate inaction that is preventing the Electoral Commission (EC) from concluding the collation of results in the Ablekuma North constituency.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Kodua claimed that only three polling stations remain to be collated, but the process has stalled due to the failure of the Police to provide the needed security.

“It’s left with just three polling stations for the EC to finish collating all the results and declare the winner for Ablekuma North,” he said.

According to him, every time the Electoral Commission attempts to invite political parties to discuss the process, certain individuals gather at the EC office to cause disturbances.

“Anytime the EC calls the parties for discussions, some bad elements mass up at the EC office and try to cause mayhem,” he noted.

He said that, in anticipation of this, the EC wrote to the Police Service to request protection, but the Police keep “going back and forth” with excuses.

“The EC wrote to the police for protection, but the Police are giving different stories,” he claimed.

Mr. Kodua revealed that the NPP wrote to the Police on June 3, seeking clarity on the security arrangements needed to carry out the collation as directed by the High Court.

He stressed that the people of Ablekuma North urgently need a Member of Parliament.

“We need to complete this process. Ablekuma North needs an MP as soon as possible,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the Police responded to the NPP’s letter, indicating they were waiting for legal advice from the Attorney General before acting.

But Mr. Kodua questioned the delay, alleging bias on the part of the security agency.

“To me, the Police are only doing the bidding of the NDC,” he alleged.

He added that in the coming weeks, the party will make public the legal steps they have taken to ensure the collation is completed.

“We’ll make public the legal steps we’ve taken. We are confident we won the elections,” he stressed.

The EC was earlier ordered by the High Court to complete the collation exercise in the constituency.

The NPP insists there is no legal impediment preventing the collation and is calling on the Police to act immediately to allow the EC to carry out its mandate.

You can’t intimidate me – Ahiafor clashes with Afenyo-Markin https://www.adomonline.com/you-cant-intimidate-me-ahiafor-clashes-with-afenyo-markin/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 15:44:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546062 Tensions flared during the vetting of Supreme Court Justice nominee Hafisata Amaleboba as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin engaged in a heated exchange with Appointments Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor over questions on presidential sanctions.

The confrontation erupted after Mr. Afenyo-Markin pressed Justice Amaleboba on whether President John Mahama’s financial penalties against ministers who failed to declare their assets encroached on the constitutional mandate of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

The nominee had earlier stated she saw “no usurpation” in the President’s actions, arguing that administrative fines did not conflict with CHRAJ’s role.

Dissatisfied with her response, Afenyo-Markin rephrased his question, demanding clarity on potential constitutional risks.

But Chairman Ahiafor intervened, ruling that the question had already been answered and directed the Minority Leader to move on.

The visibly angered Minority Leader shot back: “Please, Chairman, if you want to find a way to stop this vetting, I will yield to you. Stop what you are doing. The whole country is watching you!”

He accused Ahiafor of strategic interference, warning that the move would “haunt this House” in the future.

“I’ve seen all this drama. But whatever the precedent, if not in four years, in 12 years or 20 years, it will come back and haunt this House. No problem. If you are strategically planning that a Supreme Court nominee should not go through this process, so be it. But this question is not out of order. I am putting a question. Please pay attention to my question… Pay attention to the question I’m asking… I’m not repeating the same thing. For the avoidance of doubt, I repeat my question. What are the constitutional risks…?”

But Mr. Ahiafor would have none of it and stood his ground: “The public is not only watching me, it is watching all of us, and the jury will be out.”

“I’m a man with an indomitable spirit. I still rule that the question has been asked, and the nominee will not answer this question again.”

Assemblies to receive GH₵25m each this year – Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/assemblies-to-receive-gh%e2%82%b525m-each-this-year-mahama/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 15:29:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546046

President John Mahama has announced that every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA) will receive a minimum of ₵25 million this year.

He made this known at an orientation and training programme held in Accra on Wednesday, June 18, stating that the move aligns with the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which prioritises local governance.

“This year, every assembly—from the largest to the smallest—will receive not less than GH₵25 million.

“The NDC manifesto outlines a bold and people-centred agenda that puts local government at the heart of national development. You are the first line of the economy,” he stated.

The President explained that the allocation is to ensure local governments are adequately resourced to meet the development needs of their respective communities.

He reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to decentralised development, highlighting the crucial role of local authorities in national progress.

He further emphasised that the 2025 budget reflects this commitment, with 80 percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund allocated directly to MMDAs.

He cited key government initiatives—including the Clean Up Ghana campaign, Adumawura, the National Apprenticeship Programme, Mahama Cares, and Feed Ghana—not as abstract policies but as practical programmes that require strong coordination and effective leadership at the district level for successful implementation.

He urged district leaders to align the use of these resources with local priorities and their medium-term development plans.

“These funds must reflect the needs of your people and be used to deliver real development outcomes,” he added.

NPP to hold presidential primaries on January 31, 2026 https://www.adomonline.com/npp-to-hold-presidential-primaries-on-january-31-2026/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 20:29:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545759 General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has announced that the party will hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026.

This follows the National Council’s adoption of a proposal from the party’s Constitution Review Committee.

Mr. Kodua clarified that the date is final and does not require further approval from the National Delegates Conference, as the National Council has the authority to approve such matters.

“The date for our presidential primaries is set for January 31, 2026. That will be the day we elect our flagbearer. A planning committee has also been established to oversee the process as part of broader constitutional amendments,” he stated.

Meanwhile, a nine-member committee chaired by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu has been tasked with planning the upcoming National Delegates Conference scheduled for July 2025.

The conference will consider other proposed amendments to the party’s constitution.

With growing anticipation within the party’s rank and file, the primary is expected to attract significant interest from both longstanding members and new contenders seeking to lead the NPP into the next electoral cycle.

Party officials have indicated that nomination guidelines, timelines for campaign activities, and the code of conduct for aspirants will be released in the coming weeks.

The NEC has assured party members of a transparent and credible process that upholds the democratic values of the NPP.

Without a cap at Supreme Court, more will come, and it won’t help – Ansa-Asare warns https://www.adomonline.com/without-a-cap-at-supreme-court-more-will-come-and-it-wont-help-ansa-asare-warns/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 11:04:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545472 Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has strongly opposed the idea of maintaining an uncapped number of judges at the Supreme Court, warning that such flexibility could be exploited for political gains.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Ansa-Asare argued that without a constitutional limit, successive presidents could manipulate the bench to suit their personal or political interests.

“When the number is left unlimited, it opens the door for abuse. Every president who comes to power will want to appoint more judges to the Supreme Court, not necessarily to strengthen justice delivery, but to reward allies. It has become too political,” he said.

He cited the United States as an example of a system with stability, where the number of Supreme Court justices has been fixed at nine, including the Chief Justice.

“In America, the number is nine. It’s capped. That way, no president wakes up one day to increase it for political convenience,” he added.

Mr. Ansa-Asare expressed worry that the current nomination of seven new justices might not be the end.

“It won’t be long before another one is added. That’s the fear. And it won’t help,” he stressed.

He also disagreed with Supreme Court judge nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe, who had earlier supported the current constitutional arrangement that allows for an unlimited number of judges at the apex court.

Ansa-Asare on capping of Supreme Court judges

Justice Dzamefe, during his vetting on Monday, defended the status quo, arguing that increasing the number of judges would help reduce the Supreme Court’s caseload, especially in matters related to land, chieftaincy, and constitutional interpretation.

“The framers of the Constitution knew why they didn’t cap the number. So far as it is not capped, I am for it,” Justice Dzamefe said.

But Mr. Ansa-Asare believes such flexibility undermines the independence of the judiciary.

“I don’t agree with Justice Dzamefe or anyone who says the numbers should be left unlimited. Politics has become a job for the boys and girls. Maybe when someone becomes president, they already have people they want to promote or reward,” he said.

He called on Parliament and constitutional experts to relook at the arrangement and establish a firm ceiling on the number of justices at the Supreme Court to preserve its integrity and independence.

“This is not about personalities. It’s about protecting the sanctity of the court,” he stated.

The seven judges nominated by President John Mahama for appointment to the Supreme Court are scheduled to appear before the Appointments Committee of Parliament from Monday, June 16 to Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

This follows a referral by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to the Committee for consideration and report, in line with Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. The referral was made during parliamentary proceedings on Tuesday, May 27.

The decision comes amid rising tensions between the Minority and First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor, whose handling of the matter nearly led to a physical confrontation.

The uproar erupted on June 10 when Dr. Ayew Afriyie, who serves as Ranking Member on the Health Committee, attempted to present an urgent statement on the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), which has disrupted healthcare services nationwide since June 4.

First Deputy Speaker Ahiafor, presiding over the House, blocked the move on procedural grounds and ordered the MP’s ejection after he continued to press for a hearing. His action triggered strong protests from the Minority side.

In his remarks to Parliament on Thursday, Speaker Bagbin acknowledged the seriousness of the nurses’ strike but chastised Dr. Afriyie for sidestepping established leadership procedures.

He emphasized that urgent statements must go through the proper channels, stressing that the title ‘Honourable’ is not merely symbolic but carries a duty of decorum and respect for the chair.

The Speaker, however, stopped short of initiating disciplinary measures.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged his side’s full cooperation with the Speaker to maintain order and uphold parliamentary procedure.

EOCO, NIB investigate Ken Ofori-Atta, extradition processes underway https://www.adomonline.com/eoco-nib-investigates-ken-ofori-atta-extradition-processes-underway/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 19:48:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543856 Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is facing deepening legal troubles, as both the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) have declared him a wanted man.

The two state agencies have reportedly launched separate, active investigations into Mr. Ofori-Atta’s financial dealings during his tenure as Finance Minister, signaling an escalation in the scrutiny surrounding his stewardship of the public purse.

This development comes amid ongoing efforts by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to get Mr. Ofori-Atta to answer questions about alleged financial misconduct.

Speaking exclusively to JoyNews, the Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed that the government has now initiated processes to extradite Mr. Ofori-Atta from abroad, where he is currently believed to be.

“The arrest comes in many forms. You can arrest him and keep him temporarily, but beyond that, there must be a formal extradition process,” Justice Srem-Sai explained.

“So the fact that you are on the Red Notice is not automatic that there is an arrest warrant for which you will be extradited.”

He further clarified that the Office of the Attorney General is leading the coordination of extradition efforts with foreign governments.

“We are currently in the process of taking steps to have him extradited to Ghana,” he stated.

For the extradition to be successful, the Deputy AG stated that the alleged crimes Mr. Ofori-Atta is being investigated for must also be considered crimes in the country where he is located.

“We make a formal application to the law enforcement agency in that country. They will place him under arrest, and he will go through extradition proceedings,” the Deputy Attorney General noted.

“We are in the process with law enforcement in the U.S. to actively look for him,” Justice Srem-Sai confirmed, while noting that other jurisdictions are also under consideration depending on where he is eventually found.

Upon arrival in Ghana, he stated that Mr. Ofori-Atta will be arrested, cautioned, and formally charged, saying that the legal process would then proceed with possible bail considerations and trial.

The former minister was earlier declared wanted by the OSP following months of failed attempts to get him to appear for questioning. With EOCO and NIB now actively involved, the pressure on Ofori-Atta has significantly intensified.

Dumsor Levy: Stop using your goodwill to saddle Ghanaians with taxes – Akosua Manu to government https://www.adomonline.com/dumsor-levy-stop-using-your-goodwill-to-saddle-ghanaians-with-taxes-akosua-manu-to-government/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 11:00:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543160 The 2024 NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Adentan, Akosua Manu, popularly known as Kozie, has criticised government’s implementation of the GH¢1 per litre levy.

She accused it of misusing public trust to impose harsh taxes on Ghanaians.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, June 9, 2025, Kozie criticised the framing of the levy, passed under the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, as deceptive and downplayed in public discourse.

“If we sit here and make this GH¢1 tax per litre look like it’s just GH¢1, when ultimately it’s almost GH¢4.50 per gallon of fuel, then we are taking Ghanaians for granted,” she said.

“This deliberate attempt to push the GH¢1 narrative to make it seem like a one-time payment—or like you’re paying GH¢1 a month—is very deliberate brainwashing, gaslighting that you guys are doing. And the earlier you stop, the better,” she warned.

Her comments come amid rising public discontent and plans for mass protests by the Minority in Parliament, who estimate the new levy could extract GH¢475 million from consumers monthly, totalling GH¢5.7 billion annually.

Kozie’s remarks add to growing public concern over the government’s increasing dependence on indirect taxes, which many say are putting unbearable pressure on household budgets.

She cautioned the ruling party against using its remaining political goodwill to push unpopular policies that risk deepening voter apathy.

The Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL), set to take effect on June 16, is intended to support efforts to restructure power sector debts.

However, critics argue the move unfairly burdens already strained citizens without tackling the core inefficiencies in state institutions like the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has also condemned the rollout of the levy, calling it both “unlawful” and “coercive.”

Minority faults gov’t over lack of consultation on GH¢1 fuel levy https://www.adomonline.com/minority-faults-govt-over-lack-of-consultation-on-gh%c2%a21-fuel-levy/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 10:40:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543130 The Minority in Parliament has criticised the government for failing to engage stakeholders and ensure transparency prior to introducing the GH¢1 per litre fuel levy, citing the widespread public discontent as evidence of poor consultation.

They argue that the backlash should prompt a reassessment of how fiscal policies are communicated and implemented.

Speaking on Citi FM on Monday, June 10, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Economic Committee, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, took issue with the government’s handling of the levy, calling it rushed and lacking legitimacy.

“They never mentioned it as a policy matter in the economic policy they brought to Parliament. On the day they were bringing the levy, they did not even advertise it on the order paper,” he stated.

He compared the situation to the earlier rollout of the E-Levy, which, though unpopular, involved broader public engagement.

“You recall that sometime back, a 1% per transaction levy was introduced on people who elected to do electronic money transfers. There was a lot of engagement — town hall meetings, consultations. The government eventually reduced the rate and implemented it, and though it was unpopular, at least the public was involved,” Mr. Nkrumah said.

In contrast, he described the passage of the GH¢1 fuel levy as abrupt and lacking due process.

“Midway through — just before we ended the session — they brought a one-page order paper addendum,” he recounted.

“When we begged, literally, that we take our time and even invite other views, they said no. They rushed in the midnight and passed it through.”

Mr. Nkrumah concluded that the government’s subsequent decision to defer the levy’s implementation in the face of public outcry validates the Minority’s concerns.

“Now you are beginning to hear a lot of pushback. Government is now changing the dates for implementation. It tells you obviously that there is a need to do a lot more engagement on this economic policy,” he added.

Kwakye Ofosu fires back at Bawumia over Dumsor Levy criticism https://www.adomonline.com/kwakye-ofosu-fires-back-at-bawumia-over-dumsor-levy-criticism/ Sat, 07 Jun 2025 15:16:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542558 Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has pushed back against former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s criticism of the newly introduced Dumsor Levy, accusing the previous NPP administration of imposing over 30 different taxes during its eight years in power.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu made the comments on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, 7 June.

“I have heard Bawumia waxing lyrical about this tax. If his government had imposed just the E-levy, Ghanaians wouldn’t have risen against it. They imposed over 30 taxes on Ghanaians during the eight years they governed,” he remarked, dismissing Dr. Bawumia’s attacks as hypocritical and politically motivated.

Dr. Bawumia, during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region, accused the NDC government of betrayal, saying it had scrapped the unpopular E-levy only to introduce what he described as a “Dumsor Levy.”

He claimed the move was proof that the NDC had deceived Ghanaians during the 2024 election campaign and warned citizens to brace for more taxes.

The new levy, introduced through the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, imposes a GH¢1 per litre surcharge on petroleum products.

It aims to raise revenue to tackle the US$3.1 billion energy sector debt and secure US$1.2 billion worth of fuel for thermal power generation.

The Minority has strongly criticised the bill, calling it a “predatory tax” that was passed hastily and without adequate transparency or consultation.

Ofori-Atta must first be arrested before any trial in absentia – OSP clarifies https://www.adomonline.com/ofori-atta-must-first-be-arrested-before-any-trial-in-absentia-osp-clarifies/ Sat, 07 Jun 2025 14:59:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542546

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has clarified that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta cannot be tried in absentia unless he is first arrested and formally charged under Ghanaian law.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, 7th June, Samuel Appiah Darko, Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication at the OSP, explained the legal procedures required before any trial in absentia can take place.

“When they talk of trial in absentia, I’m like, wait a minute – let us finish with the processes of arrest before you then bring that,” he said.

He elaborated on the legal steps involved in securing a warrant: “When we say a warrant, it means that a law enforcement agency will go to a court of law and file a motion or affidavit and a police extract, and then you detail the offence for which you’re looking for the person. It’ll be granted you. Or you go for the second process where you go to a district court judge and file a complaint and the judge will then issue a warrant for police to carry it out.”

The clarification comes amid renewed efforts by the OSP to apprehend Ofori-Atta after he failed to honour a summons by the June 2 deadline.

His legal team cited cancer treatment and submitted medical documents, but the OSP deemed them insufficient.

Consequently, a formal request was made to INTERPOL, and on Thursday, 5 June, Ofori-Atta was officially placed on INTERPOL’s Red Notice list.

The alert identifies him as a 65-year-old Ghanaian male, born in Accra, fluent in both English and Twi.

OSP declaring Ofori-Atta wanted over bruised ego – Miracles Aboagye https://www.adomonline.com/osp-declaring-ofori-atta-wanted-over-bruised-ego-miracles-aboagye/ Sat, 07 Jun 2025 14:57:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542543 Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for declaring former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wanted, describing the move as driven by bruised egos rather than genuine legal grounds.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, 7th June, Aboagye argued that the OSP’s actions appear politically motivated and lack merit.

The former Finance Minister was declared wanted by the OSP after failing to meet the June 2 deadline to appear before the office.

Following this, the OSP took the unprecedented step of requesting an INTERPOL Red Notice for Ofori-Atta, escalating the situation after his legal team’s submission of medical documents citing cancer was rejected.

On 5 June, Ofori-Atta was officially listed on INTERPOL’s Red Notice database, with detailed information including his physical description and date of birth.

Miracles Aboagye condemned the OSP’s move, suggesting it is driven more by personal vendettas than a pursuit of justice.

“This declaration seems less about law and more about bruised egos,” he said. “When medical evidence is presented and still disregarded, it raises questions about the intentions behind these actions.”

He urged that the focus should be on fair legal procedures rather than sensationalism.

“We must ensure that our institutions uphold the law impartially and respect due process, rather than succumbing to political pressures or personal grievances,” he added, calling for restraint and respect for the former minister’s rights amid the ongoing investigation.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, June 7, Aboagye said that if he were in Ofori-Atta’s position and unwell, he would remain abroad and face trial in absentia.

“If I were Ken, and seeing all that has been done and I am not well, I wouldn’t come. I would prefer to stay and be tried in absentia. I wouldn’t mind being placed on INTERPOL red notice,” he stated.

The OSP recently declared Ofori-Atta wanted after he failed to honour a June 2 deadline to appear before the office.

Although his legal team submitted medical documents citing cancer, the OSP rejected the explanation, reinstated his wanted status, and initiated steps to secure an INTERPOL Red Notice.

On June 5, Ofori-Atta was officially listed on INTERPOL’s Red Notice database, which includes details such as his age, physical description, and languages spoken.

I won’t advise Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana – Kofi Bentil https://www.adomonline.com/i-wont-advise-ofori-atta-to-return-to-ghana-kofi-bentil/ Sat, 07 Jun 2025 14:45:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542539 Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, has advised former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta against returning to Ghana amid escalating legal tensions with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, June 7, Bentil expressed concerns over the handling of the case, suggesting that Ofori-Atta should allow the legal process to proceed in his absence.

“If I had the right to advise Ken, I will tell him, don’t come to Ghana. Let them try you in absentia and do whatever they will do, and we will take it from there,” Bentil stated.

Bentil also criticized the OSP’s decision to declare Ofori-Atta wanted, arguing that it exceeds the constitutional limits of the office. He emphasized that declaring someone wanted for not submitting to an investigation is not constitutionally appropriate.

Ofori-Atta was declared wanted on June 2 after failing to appear before the OSP, citing medical treatment abroad. His legal team submitted medical documents indicating he is battling cancer and is due for a procedure, but the OSP deemed the explanation insufficient. Subsequently, the OSP requested INTERPOL to issue a Red Notice for his arrest.

On June 5, INTERPOL officially listed Ofori-Atta on its Red Notice database, describing him as a 65-year-old Ghanaian male, born on November 7, 1959, in Accra. The notice includes his physical description and languages spoken.

The charges against Ofori-Atta include alleged misuse of $58 million of public funds intended for a national cathedral project that was never realized. The case is part of a broader anti-corruption campaign launched by President John Mahama, aiming to recover $20 billion in allegedly stolen state funds.

Ofori-Atta’s lawyers have criticized the fugitive declaration as unjust and have previously indicated that he is unwell, requiring surgical procedures that delay his return to Ghana. His current whereabouts remain unknown.

Dr. Tanko made the assertion during a live appearance on TV3’s New Day, hosted by Roland Walker, in response to recent developments in the OSP’s ongoing investigation into alleged corruption.

“Ken Ofori-Atta is not sick! He’s well, he’s hearty. There’s nothing wrong with him. He’s only doing hide and seek,” Dr. Tanko declared. “He knows the enormity of the crimes the OSP is investigating, and his lawyers have advised him accordingly.”

According to Dr. Tanko, a request by Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team for a virtual interrogation further supports his claim that the former minister is trying to dodge the OSP’s quest for accountability.

“This is a strategy they have adopted, and it is not going to help anybody,” he emphasised.

OSP Declares Ofori-Atta Wanted Again

Dr. Tanko’s comments come in the wake of the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s recent decision to declare Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted person once again. The move follows Mr. Ofori-Atta’s failure to appear before the OSP on June 2, 2025, despite previous assurances that he would cooperate.

The OSP, led by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, described Mr. Ofori-Atta as a fugitive from justice and has initiated steps for extradition. A formal INTERPOL Red Notice has also been requested to secure international assistance in his arrest.

This marks the second time Mr. Ofori-Atta has been declared wanted. He was removed from the list in February 2025 after pledging to return voluntarily in May.

Dr. Tanko Backs Mahama’s Anti-Corruption Drive

In the same interview, Dr. Tanko praised President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed efforts to combat corruption, saying that under his leadership, public officeholders are being held to higher ethical standards.

“President Mahama is on a mission to build a prosperous nation free from corruption and to recover all looted state funds,” Dr. Tanko said. “That’s why he has warned his appointees to stay clear of the public purse. After nearly six months in office, there hasn’t been a single corruption scandal.”

He urged the public—and particularly Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team—to support Mahama’s Reset Ghana agenda, which he described as critical to national renewal and public trust.

Who Is Ken Ofori-Atta?

Ken Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024 under President Nana Akufo-Addo. He spearheaded key financial initiatives such as the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme and IMF bailout negotiations. However, his tenure was marred by growing debt concerns and allegations of financial mismanagement.

He is currently under investigation by the OSP for alleged multiple offences, including procurement breaches and misuse of public funds—particularly regarding the Ghana Revenue Authority’s Tax Refund Account.

His lawyers have indicated that he is unwell and scheduled for a surgical procedure, which they say has delayed his return to Ghana.

OSP lied about Ofori-Atta’s medical report – Frank Davies claims https://www.adomonline.com/osp-lied-about-ofori-attas-medical-report-frank-davies-claims/ Sat, 07 Jun 2025 08:20:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542454 Legal counsel for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Mr Frank Davies, has vehemently rejected assertions by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) that it has not received a medical report explaining Ofori-Atta’s failure to honour scheduled appearances.

The OSP, on 2 June, claimed the former minister had failed to produce supporting documentation for his health-related absence and accused him of acting in bad faith.

However, in an interview on Citi FM on Friday, 6 June, Mr Davies described the OSP’s position as entirely untrue, insisting that the medical report had been properly submitted as part of legal proceedings.

“I have said, time without number, that for the OSP to say that he hasn’t sighted that medical report is a blatant falsehood, and it is unfortunate that he is holding such a public office,” he stated.

Mr Davies explained that the report was included in documents filed in court on 27 May 2025, ahead of a hearing on 28 May. He maintained that the report was duly served on the Special Prosecutor’s office and could not have been overlooked.

“The processes that were filed in court on May 27, 2025, pursuant to the application that was heard by the court on May 28 — the medical report was in the bond that was served on the Special Prosecutor. Unless he doesn’t read his court processes thoroughly,” he remarked.

Describing the situation as “distressing,” Mr Davies expressed disappointment at what he viewed as a lack of professionalism from the OSP in managing such a sensitive matter.

He warned against misinformation and urged public officials to be more diligent in their duties.

“So, for him to come and say that he hasn’t seen any medical report is a blatant falsehood. And as an officer of the court, I find it distressing,” he added, calling for greater accountability and accuracy from the OSP in its ongoing dealings with the matter.

Your Dumsor Levy is draconian – Kozie tells Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/your-dumsor-levy-is-draconian-kozie-tells-mahama/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 15:36:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542117 The New Patriotic Party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate for Adentan, Akosua Manu, has taken a swipe at the John Dramani Mahama administration over what she described as a “draconian and farcical” dumsor levy.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Thursday, 5 June, Madam Manu criticised the NDC’s handling of energy sector challenges, accusing the party of hypocrisy and a lack of transparency.

She condemned the manner in which the so-called dumsor levy was introduced under the Mahama administration, claiming it lacked proper consultation and was forced on Ghanaians without adequate stakeholder engagement.

“It was introduced in darkness, quite literally and figuratively,” she said.

“Ghanaians woke up to a tax that was neither debated publicly nor explained transparently.”

Madam Manu also recalled the fierce resistance the NDC mounted against the Akufo-Addo government’s Electronic Levy (E-levy), describing their stance at the time as disingenuous.

“It is the height of political inconsistency for a party that vilified the E-levy to now turn around and defend a levy imposed without dialogue. Where was the stakeholder engagement then?” she asked.

While calling for honest national conversations about energy financing, she emphasised the need for fairness and consistency in political discourse.

EOCO subjected Wontumi to ill-treatment, they nearly killed him – Paul Yandoh https://www.adomonline.com/eoco-subjected-wontumi-to-ill-treatment-they-nearly-killed-him-paul-yandoh/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 20:17:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541459 The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has alleged that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) subjected party chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to harsh and inhumane treatment during his detention.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Yandoh claimed Wontumi was left visibly traumatised after spending six days in EOCO custody.

“He was shaking and shivering. He couldn’t even sit properly when he was released. Chairman Wontumi has not even shared the full trauma he went through, but so many things have changed about him,” Yandoh said.

He further alleged that Wontumi went without food during his detention because he feared for his life.

“For six days, he didn’t eat. He told me he couldn’t eat because the person who brought him food had covered his face,” Yandoh added.

Mr. Yandoh claimed that EOCO officers kept the NPP regional chairman in a cramped space and treated him poorly, describing their conduct as “mafia tactics.”

“They wanted to kill him. They treated him like a criminal. But Chairman Wontumi is a genuine person, and he told them everything they wanted to know because he has nothing to hide,” he claimed.

According to Yandoh, despite the smiles Wontumi wore after his release, he was still suffering and forced himself to appear strong for the cameras.

“People thought he was okay because he smiled and waved. But I was close to him after his release, and I know what he was going through. He even raised one of his legs to show he was fine, but in truth, he was limping,” he recounted.

Chairman Wontumi was released from EOCO custody on bail after meeting conditions set at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified.

His arrest sparked strong criticism from within the NPP, with several party members describing the bail conditions as excessive and politically motivated.

Despite the ordeal, Yandoh said Wontumi remains ready to cooperate with any investigations. “He is innocent and has nothing to fear,” he said.

OSP treats Ken Ofori-Atta like a ‘common criminal’ – Kwabena Agyepong fumes https://www.adomonline.com/osp-treats-ken-ofori-atta-like-a-common-criminal-kwabena-agyepong-fumes/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 15:28:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541412 Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has expressed strong disapproval of how the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is handling the case involving former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, June 3, Mr. Agyepong lamented that the former minister is being treated “like a common criminal” by the OSP — a posture he described as unlawful.

“The way he [Special Prosecutor] is going about it, treating him [Ofori-Atta] as if he is a common thief — there has not been proof beyond a reasonable doubt,” he said.

“We shouldn’t encourage such behaviour because I think it is not right. The first step is to go to the court of law and establish a prosecution if he believes what he has gathered is enough,” he stressed.

He called on civil society organisations to speak out against what he described as a worrying trend of prosecutorial overreach.

His comments follow recent actions by the OSP, which declared Mr. Ofori-Atta a fugitive after he failed to return to the country to respond to charges relating to alleged corruption and abuse of office.

The OSP has insisted that efforts to engage the former minister have been met with non-cooperation, citing the absence of official medical documentation to justify his prolonged stay abroad.

Mr. Agyepong, however, maintains that the role of the OSP must remain within the limits of the law and should avoid any conduct that undermines the dignity of individuals under investigation.

You’re not a judge – Kwabena Agyepong slams OSP over ‘fugitive’ tag on Ofori-Atta https://www.adomonline.com/youre-not-a-judge-kwabena-agyepong-slams-osp-over-fugitive-tag-on-ofori-atta/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 14:35:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541348 Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has questioned the legal authority of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in declaring former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive.

In an interview with Citi FM on Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, Mr Agyapong argued that such a declaration can only be made by a competent court of law—not an investigative body.

“You are not a judge yourself to be able to declare someone a fugitive just because you cannot have access to the person,” he stated.

His remarks follow a public announcement by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, who said Mr Ofori-Atta was considered a fugitive after failing to return to the country to respond to ongoing investigations.

Mr Agyapong stressed the importance of due process in the pursuit of justice and accountability, cautioning state institutions to stay within legal boundaries.

“What happens to the basic law which says that you are innocent until you are proven guilty?” he asked.

The OSP, however, has defended its position, insisting that Mr Ofori-Atta failed to provide sufficient medical documentation to justify his absence and has not cooperated with investigative procedures.

As a result, the OSP has reinstated him on its list of wanted individuals.
