Speaking to JoyNews at the state funeral of the eight people, including Dr. Boamah, who lost their lives in the August 6 military helicopter crash, Mr. Gunu recounted his exceptional approach to the 2024 general elections.

“He is one person who brought his experience and expertise as a medical doctor practitioner to bear on our electoral architecture, and he was able to demystify the rumors that the NDC was not able to collate its election in 2020.

“So when it came to the 2024 election, it was like a medical officer took the whole election system to a laboratory to diagnose and found a solution and made recommendations on what to do, especially with regard to ballot accounting and other things that will help us win the election and in fact he did very well,” Mr. Gunu eulogised.

The fallen eight

The minister noted that Dr. Omane Boamah’s ability to merge medical precision with political strategy reflected his rare blend of professional expertise and patriotic commitment.

He emphasised that his role should not be forgotten. He also mourned the other six, describing their loss as the loss of a national asset.

Is the law selective? – JFK slams police over arrest of NPP affiliates [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/is-the-law-selective-jfk-slams-police-over-arrest-of-npp-affiliates-listen/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 09:19:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566826 General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Koduah, has expressed concern over what he describes as the excessive arrest of individuals affiliated with the party.

His comments follow the detention of two TikTokers allegedly linked to the NPP—Prince Ofori, popularly known as Fante Comedy, and Yayra Abiwu, also known as Akosua Jollof—in connection with a viral video containing threats against President John Mahama and his wife, Lordina Mahama.

In a related incident, NPP activist Daniel Adomako, popularly known as Sir Obama Pokuasi, was arrested for sharing a viral video showing people handling weapons.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Koduah contrasted these arrests with past incidents where political figures were recorded making inflammatory statements against former President Nana Akufo-Addo and former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia without facing any consequences.

Omane Boamah shared Akwatia by-election strategy hours before his death – Tanko-Computer https://www.adomonline.com/omane-boamah-shared-akwatia-by-election-strategy-hours-before-his-death-tanko-computer/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 06:58:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566870 Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko-Computer, has revealed that the late Defence Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah, spent the morning of the fatal helicopter crash discussing election strategies with party officials.

“In fact, in the morning, we had a close discussion with Dr. Omane Boamah around 7 am. It was virtual, because he mostly conducts meetings online. He was a type who wanted to maximise time. Instead of people coming together physically, he would say, ‘Let’s use social media platforms for our discussions.’ So most of our meetings in the run-up to the election were held virtually,” Rashid Tanko-Computer recounted on JoyNews’ PM Express.

The Acting CEO of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) said this approach was typical of Dr. Boamah, whose meticulous planning shaped the NDC’s electoral operations.

“He started the day we were appointed, and we had our first meeting in then-candidate John Mahama’s office in 2023. That was the day I realized the NPP were preparing to disrupt the 2024 election,” Tanko-Computer said.

Recalling the final meeting, he added, “Around 7:45 am, Dr. Omane was giving us strategies on how to approach the Akwatia by-election. He gave us all this guidance because Dr. Omane was a master planner. He would sit down, map out the strategy with pen and paper, assign tasks, and then we would implement them. He trusted us to deliver an A+. That is how he worked.”

Tanko-Computer further revealed that the team was expected to report back to Dr. Omane Boamah by evening.

“So that morning, we had completed all our tasks and were to report back, but he didn’t tell us he was travelling. None of us knew he would be on that flight.”

Dr. Omane Boamah was among eight people who died in Wednesday’s military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. President John Mahama has announced a high-level Investigative Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the tragedy.

NPP commiserates with NDC over helicopter crash [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-commiserates-with-ndc-over-helicopter-crash-video/ Wed, 13 Aug 2025 17:03:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566774 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, August 13, led a delegation to commiserate with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two Ministers.

The visit to the NDC headquarters marked exactly a week after the tragic incident that has thrown the nation into shock and mourning.

The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, on behalf of the party, received the NPP members.

During their interaction, Mr. Kodua apologised to the NDC leadership over remarks made by some NPP members regarding the incident.

Mr. Kodua appealed that any individual comments must not be taken as the NPP’s official position, stressing that death or the circumstance is not one anybody should even wish for their worst enemy.

For their part, the NDC expressed gratitude to the NPP for their kind words and commiseration visit during this difficult period.

We’ll contest Akwatia by-election – NDC https://www.adomonline.com/well-contest-akwatia-by-election-ndc/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 19:06:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566453 The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed its readiness to contest the upcoming Akwatia by-election scheduled for September 2, while raising concerns over what it described as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) political calculations in recent parliamentary by-elections.

This development follows the NPP’s decision to withdraw from the pending Tamale Central by-election amid calls for the NDC to also pull out of the Akwatia polls as a mark of respect for the late former Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, a native of the region.

In a statement signed by Deputy National Communications Officer Godwin Ako Gunn, the NDC commended the NPP for not fielding a candidate in Tamale Central after the death of MP Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed in the August 6 helicopter crash, calling it “the best decision they have taken in recent times.”

However, the party suggested the NPP’s move was less about honouring the late MP and more about avoiding a potential defeat while gaining public sympathy ahead of the Akwatia contest.

“This is not the first time a political party has refused to contest a by-election,” the NDC noted, citing its own decision to step aside in Ejisu following the passing of John Kumah.

The statement also reminded the public that Akwatia’s parliamentary seat had been under legal dispute prior to the death of the late Ernest Kumi.

Further, the NDC cautioned voters against accepting the NPP’s public declarations at face value, recalling instances where the ruling party reversed its position after initial announcements.

“In the Ablekuma North rerun, the NPP declared they would not contest but were the first to mobilize on the ground,” Mr. Gunn pointed out.

Extending condolences to the family of the late Ernest Kumi and the relatives of the “gallant eight heroes” who died in the helicopter crash, Mr. Gunn urged NDC supporters to exercise restraint in public commentary.

“Let us be mindful of our comments in this time of mourning,” he advised.

Withdraw from Akwatia by-election to honour Omane Boamah – Nana B urges NDC https://www.adomonline.com/withdraw-from-akwatia-by-election-to-honour-omane-boamah-nana-b-urges-ndc/ Tue, 12 Aug 2025 19:03:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566444 The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to pull out of the upcoming parliamentary by-election in Akwatia, scheduled for September 2.

Nana B, as he is popularly known, said such a move would mirror the NPP’s decision not to contest the Tamale Central by-election, following the death of its MP, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the August 6 military helicopter crash.

He argued that, given the NDC’s loss of five prominent members in the crash, the party should refrain from engaging in active politics immediately after the state burial.

“We are mourning with them. So, for me, you have a stalwart like honorable from the Eastern Region, I would say that right after the state burial, then we enter into such fierce contest, for me, it will not serve his memory right,” he said on Joy FM on August 11.

Mr Nana Boakye referenced recent incidents, including violent clashes in Ablekuma and the devastating helicopter crash, as reasons to prioritise national unity over partisan competition.

“I believe that right after laying such stalwarts to rest, plunging into a fierce contest would not serve their memory well. With the current mood of the nation, lowering the political temperature would be the right thing to do,” he explained.

He added that even though that is his personal expectation, “we leave it to them.”

The Akwatia seat became vacant following the death of MP Ernest Yaw Kumi on July 7, 2025, after a brief illness.

He was 40 years old.

Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Kevor recounted Dr. Omane Boamah’s generosity, discipline, and unwavering loyalty to the party and President John Mahama.

“He supported me in kind and cash. At one point, he sold his car to raise resources for my campaign. I became regional chairman, and we went on to support the national elections,” Dr. Kevor revealed.

He also shared that Dr. Omane Boamah sought his counsel before accepting the role of NDC Director of Elections and IT, discussing the decision with him and colleague Gyeke Darko.

Following the party’s defeat in the 2020 general elections—blamed by some on Dr. Omane Boamah—he had considered stepping away from frontline politics. But Dr. Kevor and others persuaded him to stay, emphasizing his loyalty to President Mahama and the importance of redeeming the party’s fortunes.

“We believed that with his loyalty to President Mahama, it would only be fair for him to stay close and help Mahama win the next election, to redeem himself and change the narrative,” Dr. Kevor said.

He also highlighted that Dr. Omane Boamah’s discipline was a vital quality the party lacked in 2020, contributing to its loss.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah was among eight people who died in the tragic August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

NPP opts out of Tamale Central by-election https://www.adomonline.com/npp-opts-out-of-tamale-central-by-election/ Mon, 11 Aug 2025 17:21:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565974 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will not participate in the Tamale Central Constituency by-election to elect the successor to the late MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Dr. Murtala, who doubled as the Minister for Environment, Technology, and Innovation, was one of the victims who perished in the helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6.

His passing has left the Tamale Central seat vacant, triggering constitutional procedures for a by-election under Article 112(5) of Ghana’s Constitution.

Although the Electoral Commission is yet to announce the modalities for the by-election, the NPP has explained that the decision was reached during a National Steering Committee meeting on Monday, August 11, 2025.

The statement signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong noted that the resolution, grounded in Article 10(10)(1) of the NPP Constitution, was shaped by the circumstances surrounding the vacancy and a desire to avoid heightening political tensions during a period of national mourning.

“It would be inhumane and insensitive to subject the country to a highly competitive process to find a replacement for the late MP,” the statement said, adding that by-elections in Ghana often carry tension and acrimony that should be avoided at this time.

The NPP further stated that the best way to honour Dr. Murtala and the other crash victims is not only to step up efforts against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey but also to ensure a calm, respectful, and non-contentious transition in filling the seat.

“When the Electoral Commission opens nominations for the Tamale Central by-election, the NPP will, in the national interest, refrain from participating,” the statement concluded.

Mr. Baidoo, who also serves as the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akwatia, polled 380 votes in the primaries held on Monday, August 4, 2025.

He defeated his close contender, Erasmus Ali Korney, who secured 366 votes, and former MP and 2024 parliamentary candidate Henry Yiadom Boakye, whom he previously represented as legal counsel in court, as Mr. Yiadom garnered 226 votes.

Out of 1,075 eligible voters, 975 cast their ballots, with three votes rejected.

Following Mr. Baidoo’s victory, he will battle the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) acclaimed candidate, Solomon Asumadu, in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.

Security personnel have been strategically deployed to the area to maintain law and order as party delegates cast their votes to choose from three contenders vying to represent the party in the by-election.

The aspirants include former Member of Parliament, Henry Boakye Yiadom, former Presiding Member of the Akwatia Municipal Assembly, Erasmus Ali Korney, and another party member, Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

The atmosphere is tense yet orderly, with party supporters thronging the venue in anticipation of the outcome, while police officers patrol the park and surrounding areas to ensure a smooth process.

Addressing journalists at the venue, Mark-Oliver Kevor, Eastern Regional Chairman of the NDC, expressed strong confidence in the party’s chances at the by-election, declaring confidently that whoever emerges victorious in the internal election will effectively become the MP for Akwatia.

“The NDC is fully prepared and united behind this by-election. We believe Akwatia is ready for change, and our candidate, once elected today, will carry the constituency to victory on 2nd September,” Dr Kevor stated.

The by-election follows the sudden passing of the young New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi.

Before his death, his victory was being contested by the NDC in court, which had alleged some irregularities during the main election in December 2024.

The declaration of the vacant seat has triggered political activity in the constituency as the two major parties position themselves for what is expected to be a hotly contested race.

I won’t be surprised if Ukraine sues NPP – Majority Leader mocks  https://www.adomonline.com/i-wont-be-surprised-if-ukraine-sues-npp-majority-leader-mocks/ Fri, 01 Aug 2025 09:00:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562294 Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using the Russia-Ukraine war as a scapegoat for Ghana’s economic difficulties.

According to him, the ruling party has exaggerated the impact of the war to cover up its governance failures.

“I won’t be surprised if Ukraine sues the NPP, because they have overexploited the war,” Mr. Ayariga said while contributing to the debate on the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 31.

“Indeed, the beginning and the end of Ghana’s economic problems were in Ukraine. I’m tempted to believe that the NPP as a party and the government have benefited more from the Ukraine war than even the Russians who started it,” he added, sparking laughter in the House.

The Bawku Central MP further recalled internal discontent within the NPP at the peak of the economic crisis.

“Their Finance Minister had performed so abysmally that over 88 of them marshalled their numbers and wanted the Finance Minister deposed,” he noted.

Mr. Ayariga also expressed surprise that Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin attempted to downplay this record, especially after crediting the recent stability of the cedi to policies of the Akufo-Addo administration.

“I’m surprised today to hear the Minority Leader attempt to obliterate that record from our history,” he said, insisting the NPP’s economic record was defined by hardship masked behind global events.

IMF exposed you; cedi stability built on NPP foundations – Afenyo-Markin tells NDC https://www.adomonline.com/imf-exposed-you-cedi-stability-built-on-npp-foundations-afenyo-markin-tells-ndc/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 19:51:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2562102 Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has downplayed suggestions that the recent appreciation of the Ghana Cedi is solely the result of the Mahama-led administration’s policies, describing such claims as misleading and politically opportunistic.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the recent gains of the local currency but insisted that the foundations for the current stability were laid under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

“Indeed, from January through to June, the Cedi strengthened significantly, which the Minister touts as unprecedented,” he said on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, July 31, during a debate following the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

“We do welcome a stronger Cedi — we, on this side [Minority], welcome a stronger Cedi. It eases the burden on import costs and brings some price relief to Ghanaians. However, claiming this as proof of some unique NDC progress is misleading.”

The Effutu MP argued that the appreciation of the Cedi was influenced by multiple external and inherited factors, including renewed investor confidence stemming from Ghana’s ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and a significantly improved fiscal outlook — a process he claimed began before the change of government.

“A major factor is renewed investor confidence and inflows resulting from the IMF programme and improved fiscal outlook — a trajectory set in motion last year,” the Minority Leader stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin also pointed to Ghana’s strong gold exports and remittance inflows in late 2024 as additional contributors to the Cedi’s performance.

He accused the NDC of publicly downplaying the previous government’s economic interventions while quietly acknowledging them in official engagements with the IMF.

“Mr. Speaker, let me remind the NDC: whereas they have denied the successes of the NPP in laying the foundation, they have quietly indicated that in their report to the IMF.

“That is why recently the IMF exposed you — that you have acknowledged that the stability we find today is as a result of the foundation laid by the Akufo-Addo government,” he asserted.

GTEC threatens lawsuit against NDC Chairman over unearned ‘Professor’ title https://www.adomonline.com/gtec-threatens-lawsuit-against-ndc-chairman-over-unearned-professor-title/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 12:26:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561909

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has issued a warning to Richard Kofi Asiedu, the Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), over his continued unauthorised use of the honorary title “Professor.”

In a letter dated July 28, 2025, GTEC accused Mr. Asiedu of defying its earlier directives to cease the practice, describing it as “unethical” and a violation of national law.

The Commission revealed that it had earlier written to Mr. Asiedu on June 2, 2025, demanding proof of the removal of the title from all official records, including institutional profiles, websites, and letterheads.

He was also instructed to submit his highest academic qualification for verification.

However, GTEC noted with “deep concern” that Mr. Asiedu has persisted in using the title, as evidenced by a recent EELL 2025 Conference promotional poster, where he was billed as “Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu.”

Citing Section 8(4)(d) of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1023), GTEC emphasised its mandate to regulate the use of academic titles, including “Professor,” and warned that failure to comply could lead to legal action.

The letter, signed by Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Director-General of GTEC, urged the NDC’s National Chairman to intervene.

“The Commission respectfully appeals to you to ensure that Mr. Asiedu complies fully with the directives issued. Should he persist, the Commission may be compelled to initiate legal proceedings.”

GTEC clarified that its action was not politically motivated but aimed at upholding the integrity of academic titles. The letter was copied to the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey and Mr. Asiedu himself.

In a related communication dated June 19, 2025 to the St. Andrews Group of Schools and Companies, where Mr. Asiedu serves as CEO, GTEC reiterated that while it did not dispute the honorary titles awarded to him by institutions like Alfred Nobel University in Ukraine, their use without formal academic validation was “potentially misleading.” The Commission directed him to “purge himself” of the title by July 31, 2025, or face legal consequences.

Mr. Asiedu’s profile on the EELL 2025 conference poster describes him as a “distinguished Ghanaian scholar” with “a number of earned doctorates,” but GTEC maintains that such claims require scrutiny under Section 7(i) of Act 1023, which empowers it to verify certificates and degrees.

Top NDC lawyer picks forms to contest Akwatia primaries https://www.adomonline.com/top-ndc-lawyer-picks-forms-to-contest-akwatia-primaries/ Mon, 28 Jul 2025 17:17:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560671

A Koforidua-based private legal practitioner, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has officially declared his intention to contest the upcoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Akwatia constituency ahead of the impending by-election.

Mr. Baidoo, who also serves as the NDC Constituency Secretary for Akwatia, picked up his nomination forms on Monday, July 28, at the Eastern Regional party office in Koforidua.

He was accompanied by a group of chiefs and elders from the constituency, who expressed strong support for his bid, describing him as the best candidate to lead the NDC in the area.

The Akwatia seat became vacant following the passing of the Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Although the Electoral Commission is yet to officially announce the date for the by-election, the NDC has begun internal processes to elect a parliamentary candidate.

So far, three individuals have picked up nomination forms. They are:

  • Bernard Bediako Baidoo, lawyer and constituency secretary

  • Erasmus Korney Ali, businessman

  • Henry Boakye Yiadom, former MP and the NDC’s 2024 parliamentary candidate

Mr. Baidoo notably served as the legal representative for Mr. Yiadom in his court challenge against the late Ernest Yaw Kumi’s victory in the 2024 general election.

Speaking to journalists after picking his forms, Mr. Baidoo emphasized his readiness to lead the NDC in reclaiming the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Yes, I was the NDC’s lawyer in the case between Henry Boakye Yiadom (OKOYO) and Ernest Yaw Kumi, and everyone knows I did my best. But the phase has ended; the floodgates are now open for any party member who qualifies to contest. Does it mean I can’t contest because I was the former MP’s lawyer?” he questioned.

He added, “I was still in court fighting for him, but unfortunately, everything has come to an end following Kumi’s passing.”

Mr. Baidoo, who also serves on the NDC’s Eastern Regional Legal Team, disclosed that senior figures within the party encouraged him to contest.

“I am in this race because people think I am well cut for it. I have top party bigwigs calling on me every now and then to represent the party. And when such calls come, it becomes difficult to turn down the request,” he explained.

The NDC is expected to vet the three aspirants on Thursday, July 31, and hold the primaries on Monday, August 4.

This was contained in a statement signed by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, on July 25, 2025.

The party detailed the procedures for the primaries and emphasised the need for full compliance from all aspirants and stakeholders.

As part of efforts to promote inclusion and gender equality, the NDC has approved a 50% reduction in filing fees for female aspirants and persons living with disabilities (PWDs).

Nomination forms will be available at the party’s Eastern Regional Office and must be submitted there upon completion.

Aspirants will be granted access to the delegates’ list only after verification of payment of the full filing fee.

“All payments must be made directly into the party’s official account at UMB Bank, Adabraka Branch,” the statement noted, adding that cheques and bankers’ drafts will not be accepted.

The party reiterated its commitment to fairness and inclusivity in the internal election process and urged all aspirants to conduct their campaigns with decorum and respect.

“The party expects all aspirants to operate in the spirit of decency and fairness, upholding the democratic values of the NDC,” the statement concluded.

The by-election has become necessary following the passing of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Meanwhile, barring any last-minute changes, the NDC has scheduled the election for Monday, August 4, 2025.

According to the IMF, the new government has expressed strong support for reforms under the ongoing IMF-supported programme.

The Fund stated that “the authorities [Mahama government] see the latter [Akufo-Addo government] as having played a key role in stabilising the economy and in providing a credible anchor to address long-standing vulnerabilities and buttress confidence.”

This revelation comes just days after a heated exchange in Parliament between Majority and Minority members over Ghana’s recent economic gains, including declining inflation and a strengthening cedi.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) credited Ghana’s recent macroeconomic gains to legacy policies initiated under former President John Mahama.

Amenfi West MP, Eric Afful pointed to falling inflation, dropping from 21.2% in April to 18.3% in May 2025, alongside a stronger cedi and improved fiscal indicators as evidence of this legacy. He attributed the progress to tight monetary policy, fiscal consolidation, and improved market confidence.

However, Ofoase-Ayirebi MP, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah challenged these claims, arguing the cedi’s rebound is largely due to short-term interventions, including a 1.4 billion dollar injection from reserves, which he says do not reflect long-term economic strength.

Other lawmakers echoed concerns about the sustainability of the gains. Energy Minister John Jinapor cautioned that while inflation has declined, prices are still rising, a case of disinflation, not deflation.

Dr. Kabiru Mohammed warned that the cedi’s appreciation, driven by central bank interventions, creates an illusion of economic strength and contradicts market principles.

He also disputed the improved debt-to-GDP ratio, attributing it more to debt restructuring than actual growth. He stressed that the current administration is reaping the benefits of reforms it did not initiate.

Photos from 13th wreath-laying ceremony for Prof John Evans Atta Mills https://www.adomonline.com/photos-from-13th-wreath-laying-ceremony-for-prof-john-evans-atta-mills/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 15:18:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559330 A wreath-laying ceremony was held on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at Asomdwe Park in Accra to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills.

Addressing the gathering, President John Mahama said the annual memorial should be regarded as a national duty and an opportunity to reflect on the late leader’s legacy.

“If there’s one lesson we draw from the life of President Mills, it is that no challenge is insurmountable when we lead with integrity, when we listen with empathy, and when we govern with principle,” Mahama said.

He also linked the current administration’s Reset Agenda to the strong foundation laid by President Mills through the Better Ghana Agenda.

Mahama described President Mills’s leadership as an era defined by service, integrity, and principle, rather than political insults.

A total of six wreaths were laid during the ceremony. One was laid on behalf of the widow, Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, by Krowor MP Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, with support from Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo and Minister for Fisheries, Hon. Emelia Arthur.

President Mahama laid a wreath, assisted by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, together with members of the Majority Caucus, also laid wreaths. Johnson Asiedu Nketia laid one on behalf of the NDC, while members of the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage (JEAMMH) also paid tribute with a commemorative wreath.

The event was attended by President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, and several Members of Parliament.

Notable guests included NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey, and Alex Segbefia, who serves as both Board Chairman and CEO of the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage. Also present were Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, members of the party’s Council of Elders, relatives of the late president, and members of the public.

Adomonline’s photojournalist, Joseph Odotei, was on the ground to capture scenes from the solemn occasion.

Mahama should decline Minority’s request to meet him – Adu Asare [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-should-decline-minoritys-request-to-meet-him-adu-asare-video/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 11:27:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559209 Former Member of Parliament for Adentan, Kojo Adu Asare, has urged President John Mahama not to grant an audience to the Minority in Parliament.

According to him, Parliament is the appropriate platform for the Minority to raise their concerns, and they should utilise it rather than boycotting sittings.

“How many times did Akufo-Addo meet with the Minority in his eight years? How many times did President Kufuor meet the Minority? The request should be declined because they are supposed to speak in Parliament, and if they keep boycotting sittings, what are they going to tell the President when they can’t use the forum they have?” he quizzed.

His comments come as the Minority prepares to formally present a petition at the Jubilee House today, Thursday, July 24, 2025, requesting a meeting with the President on what they describe as “issues of great public concern.”

In an earlier letter, the caucus emphasised the urgency of the matters they wish to raise, stating that they require “fair-minded leadership and definitive action” from the President.

However, Mr. Adu Asare, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, insisted that the best avenue for such matters remains Parliament.

“These guys have a mandate given to them by the constitution of Ghana. So who has given them the mandate to seek an audience with the President? Over what? They have already been given a forum for dialogue and debate, but they use that to vilify and throw shade, and now they are seeking whichever forum. Is that Parliament?” he fumed.

Remember your Majority status will not last forever – Egyapa Mercer to NDC  https://www.adomonline.com/remember-your-majority-status-will-not-last-forever-egyapa-mercer-to-ndc/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 07:32:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2559146 Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has advised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus not to be complacent about their current two-thirds majority in Parliament.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, the former Deputy Energy Minister reminded the NDC MPs that their dominant status is temporary and they would eventually be held accountable for their performance in the 2028 general elections.

“The NDC MPs should not take their two-thirds majority for granted simply because they have the numbers,” he said. “They should not make decisions unilaterally but consult the knowledgeable minority for ideas that will benefit the nation.”

Reflecting on his tenure between 2017 and 2021 when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) held a strong parliamentary majority of 169 seats, Egyapa Mercer noted that the then-majority made room for inclusive governance.

“We always considered the views of senior and experienced MPs like Haruna Iddrisu and others, even if some of those discussions were not publicized,” he added.

He emphasized that parliamentary democracy thrives on mutual respect between majority and minority sides, saying, “The principle is that the majority will have its way, and the minority will have its say. It is crucial that the minority is allowed to voice their opinions.”

Meanwhile, political analyst Jonathan Asante Okyere has disagreed with suggestions that the NDC majority is sidelining the minority.

According to him, the current parliamentary leadership has not abused its numerical strength, unlike what might have happened under the Akufo-Addo administration.

“If the Akufo-Addo government had the majority in their previous administration, they would likely have exploited their numbers to sideline the minority,” he asserted.

He concluded by emphasizing that governance requires cooperation between both sides of the House.

Why I get angry when people say ‘galamsey’ is worse under NDC – Erastus Donkor https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-get-angry-when-people-say-galamsey-is-worse-under-ndc-erastus-donkor/ Wed, 23 Jul 2025 10:06:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558752 Environmental journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor, says in the fight against illegal mining, the erstwhile New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration failed to appreciate his reports and take bold steps to halt the menace.

He observed that galamsey activities became a cause for worry in 2012 under an NDC administration, but things got worse from 2016 to 2024 under the NPP.

“I did several reports on mining in Apamprama Forest in 2018, but they turned a deaf ear to my report. I always get angry if I hear that someone is saying the galamsey activities are higher under the NDC administration than the NPP; I classify the person as unserious,” he stated.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s Kuroyi Mu Nsem Show, Erastus cited several forest reserves and water bodies that came under siege during the NPP administration but acknowledged that the NDC government is yet to halt the devastation.

He made the remarks in reaction to statements by NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, who attributed the degradation of forest reserves and water bodies to the previous NDC administration.

“If I hear that the NPP is doing politics with galamsey menace, I get worried. No one should make it that Akufo-Addo was a saint on galamsey,” Erastus said.

According to Erastus, the mess of illegal mining is yet to be cleared, but noted that the current NDC administration appreciates his reports and the need to take measures to protect forests, water bodies and livelihoods.

Ablekuma North NDC supporters grace Ewurabena Aubynn’s swearing-in [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-ndc-supporters-grace-ewurabena-aubynns-swearing-in-video/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 12:48:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558423 Parliament witnessed a wave of celebration on Monday, July 21, as scores of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters from Ablekuma North thronged the House to witness the official swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn as the Member of Parliament (MP).

Her induction follows a hard-fought victory in a parliamentary rerun for the constituency held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Clad in NDC colours, the elated supporters cheered as Aubynn took the oath of office, pledging to serve her constituents with dedication and integrity.

Majority Leader and Bawku Central MP, Mahama Ayariga, welcomed her warmly and described her entry into Parliament as “a reinforcement of the NDC’s growing momentum.”

He assured Ghanaians that the caucus would not take its two-thirds majority for granted or abuse that right, but would meet the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

The rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was necessitated after the Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the original December 2024 parliamentary results over allegations of electoral irregularities and the submission of unauthenticated pink sheets.

Miss Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.

Political chess masters: 11 multiparty Ghanaian families playing all sides https://www.adomonline.com/political-chess-masters-11-multiparty-ghanaian-families-playing-all-sides/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 11:15:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558349 As the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) convened on Saturday, July 19, to refine its constitution, a foundational step to strengthen the elephant to pull down the umbrella in 2028, another intriguing narrative unfolded on the sidelines, capturing public attention.

Joy News got the NPP 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Aowin Constituency, Fuseini Yakubu Abanga (NPP Abanga), for an interview, leading to bombshells, turning the minds of viewers to relatives in different political organisations.

Politics is often deemed a brutal arena, yet some families have masterfully navigated its complexities, demonstrating remarkable influence across the political spectrum.

Political dynasties are a global phenomenon, and Ghana is no exception, with families often nurturing successive generations into positions of power. Beyond generational succession, some families have strategically extended their reach into multiple political affiliations.

Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill famously remarked, “Politics is not a game. It is an earnest business.”

Consciously or unconsciously, these families embody the adage: “Never put all your eggs in one basket,” perhaps as a safeguard against Ghana’s often winner-takes-all political environment.

This article delves into prominent Ghanaian families with representation across the nation’s political divide.

The Abanga Twins

Alhassan Yakubu Abanga (NDC) and Fuseini Yakubu Abanga (NPP) are identical twins who, despite sharing a womb, birth, and upbringing, find themselves on opposite ends of Ghana’s political spectrum.

Their striking resemblance often makes them indistinguishable, leading Fuseini to adopt the moniker ‘Abanga NPP’.

The twins gained prominence in 2022 when both decided to elevate their political careers.

Alhassan successfully secured a Vice Chairman position within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), having previously played various roles for the NDC’s Tertiary Educational Institutions Network (TEIN).

Conversely, Fuseini’s bid for the NPP’s National Youth Organiser position was unsuccessful.

Prior to his parliamentary candidacy, Abanga NPP was a key official of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the NPP and has been attached to the Office of the General Secretary of the NPP since 2015.

In the last elections, he contested the Aowin seat in the Western North Region but lost, a setback he attributed to his twin brother.

The Kamara relatives: Boniface and Baba

Alhaji Abubakar Boniface Siddique, a veteran of the governing NPP, shares a familial bond with Alhaji Baba Kamara, a prominent figure in the opposition NDC.

Alhaji Siddique has served in various capacities within the NPP administration, including Minister of State at the Office of the Vice President, former Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, and Minister of Youth, Labour, and Employment (2005-2007). He also previously served as the Member of Parliament for Salaga.

Alhaji Baba Kamara, a businessman, held the influential position of National Security Advisor to former President John Mahama.

Notably, Alhaji Siddique has openly stated that his political affiliation did not hinder his personal well-being, even when the NDC was in power, thanks to the support, both financial and otherwise, from his ‘brother’ on the other side.

At a 2017 town hall meeting, Alhaji Siddique candidly addressed party foot soldiers embroiled in partisan conflicts, elaborating on the benefits of having a relative in the opposing party.

“We will never starve in my house. My party, the NPP, may have been in opposition, but I was not. When the NDC was in power, I didn’t lack anything. When I go to my brother, Kamara, for money, he will give me. Today, I am in power [and] when he needs something, he will call me. We speak all the time. So think about it,” Alhaji Siddique advised the gathering.

The Jinapor Brothers

The highly revered Paramount Chief of the Buipe Traditional Area, Abdulai Jinapor II, should be a proud father because he can almost always point to a son in government, considering Ghana’s two-horse political governance.

Go to the opposition NDC, and you will find a Jinapor, turn to the governing NPP; there is also a Jinapor – these two parties have shared the spoils for the past eight elections under Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

The brothers are not mere members of the two political giants.

John Jinapor is MP for Yapei Kusawgu and serves as Minister of Energy and Green Transition.

His younger brother, Samuel Jinapor, is currently the MP for Damongo, a seat he snatched from the NDC’s Adam Mutawakilu, an associate of his brother.

The Mahama, Otiko, and Joyce Bawa Triangle

Former President John Mahama has a long and distinguished career within the NDC, culminating in his ascent to the presidency.

His cousin, Joyce Bawa-Mogtari, has also excelled within the same party, earning the admirable tag of ‘Communicator Extraordinaire’ for her impeccable execution of duties as Special Advisor and aide to President Mahama.

A highly regarded lawyer, Mrs. Bawa-Mogtari is often cited as a potential female presidential candidate in Ghana after holding previous ministerial roles, including deputy for the transport ministry.

Within the same family, Mrs. Bawa-Mogtari’s sister, the strong-willed and vocal Otiko Afisa Djaba, aligned with the elephant, ditching the umbrella.

Ms. Djaba, a former Women’s Organiser of the NPP and former Minister of Gender, stepped down from public service after declining an appointment as Ghana’s Ambassador to Italy in 2018 under then-President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The Ramadans: Samira, Abu, and Others

The Ramadan family is one of Ghana’s most prominent, with members extending their political influence across the PNC, NPP, and NDC.

Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, a former chairman of the PNC, was appointed Ghana’s first Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates by President Akufo-Addo in 2017.

He passed on his political legacy to his three children: Abu Ramadan, former Youth Organiser of the PNC and former Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO); Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, Member of Parliament for Adentan (NDC); and former Second Lady Samira Bawumia (NPP).

Mrs. Bawumia is frequently mentioned in discussions about potential female presidential candidates.

While not a conventional politician in appearance, her political acumen was evident during the 2020 elections.

She is particularly remembered for her electrifying 2016 speech, which many credit with delivering a decisive blow to then-President Mahama and the NDC, contributing to the NPP’s first-round victory.

Former Vice President Bawumia and His Father

The name Bawumia is synonymous with former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

However, before Dr. Bawumia’s rise, his father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, had already forged a significant political path.

Unlike many of the families highlighted, the father and son held differing political ideologies.

While Dr. Bawumia champions the NPP, his father’s political journey saw him as a member of the Northern People’s Party and later the United Party.

He famously crossed carpets to the Convention People’s Party in 1958 while still in parliament, subsequently serving in several ministerial roles under Kwame Nkrumah’s governments.

Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, a lawyer and the paramount chief of Kperiga, also served as chairman of the Council of State in the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2000.

The Ayarigas

Hassan Ayariga, the eldest of the three brothers, was the People’s National Convention (PNC) presidential candidate for the 2012 elections before breaking ranks to form the All People’s Congress (APC).

His younger brothers, however, have remained steadfastly loyal to the NDC.

Mahama Ayariga serves as the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and holds the position of Majority Leader in Parliament.

His extensive political experience includes roles as former Minister of Information and Media Relations and former Minister of Youth and Sports under the first Mahama administration.

The youngest, Osman Ayariga, is the NDC Deputy National Youth Organiser.

The Naabu Brothers

Despite being brothers, Daniel Bugri Naabu and Joseph Bipoba Naabu maintain distinct political affiliations.

Bugri is a staunch NPP member, while Bipoba proudly aligns with the NDC.

The vociferous Bugri gained prominence after defeating Haruna Tia Sulemana to become the Northern Regional NPP Chairman in 2014.

He is credited with increasing the party’s parliamentary seats in the region from 10 to 13 in the 2016 elections.

However, a controversial attempt to garner sympathy votes in 2018 backfired, leading to his loss in the re-election bid for the Northern Regional Chairman.

He was later appointed to the National Council of the NPP and, even as the Paramount Chief of Namong in the Northern Region, he remains influential within the party, having publicly endorsed Dr. Bawumia’s presidential bid in 2020 with the declaration, “With Bawumia, we win finish.”

His junior brother, Bipoba, served two terms as the NDC Member of Parliament for Yunyoo from 2012 but lost in 2020 to Oscar Liwal. His allegiance to the NDC remains unwavering.

Yaw Osafo-Maafo and Dr. I.K. Adjei-Maafo

Yaw Osafo-Maafo is a familiar figure in Ghana’s contemporary political landscape, much like his senior brother, Dr. I.K. Adjei-Maafo, was in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Yaw Osafo-Maafo served as the Senior Presidential Advisor to the Akufo-Addo government, wielding significant power and influence across various sectors.

He was also the Senior Minister of the Republic of Ghana from 2017 to 2021 and a Member of Parliament for Akim Oda from 1997 to 2009, having previously held cabinet roles, including Finance Minister, in the Kufuor Administration (2001-2009).

Few people are aware that his brother, Dr. I.K. Adjei-Maafo, served as Secretary for Agriculture during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era.

Dr. Adjei-Maafo’s role as a government officer in charge of Cocoa Schedule extended from the PNDC into the early period of the NDC government, which assumed office in 1992.

Kojo Yankah (NDC) and Prof. Kwesi Yankah (NPP)

Another intriguing family dynamic exists within the Yankah household, with two distinguished intellectuals on opposing political sides.

Kojo Yankah is a former Member of Parliament for Agona East, a seat he won in 1992 on the ticket of the NDC. He served as Central Regional Minister and later Ashanti Regional Minister under the Rawlings administration.

The renowned statesman is also the founder and president of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) and a former editor of the Daily Graphic.

Several years later, his brother, Professor Kwesi Yankah, was appointed Minister of State in charge of tertiary education in 2017 by President Nana Akufo-Addo. Professor Yankah openly stated his long-standing membership in the NPP.

He also served as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana and the president of Central University. The accomplished author and academic was inducted as a fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999.

Peter Ala Adjetey and Larry Adjetey

For older Ghanaians, the Rt. Hon. Peter Ala Adjetey is a familiar name, having presided over Ghana’s parliament from 2001 to 2005 under the Kufuor regime.

The late statesman was also the Member of Parliament for Kpeshie in the Third Republic and the United National Convention (UNC) Parliamentary group leader during that period.

In 1995, he became Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a position he held until 1998.

However, throughout these years, his son, Larry Adjetey, aligned himself with the rivals of his father’s party.

An experienced lawyer called to the Ghana Bar in 1984, Larry, plays a significant role as a leading member of the NDC.

In 2009, he was vocal in defending the Mills administration’s efforts to retrieve state vehicles and properties from past NPP ministers and appointees, urging the public not to perceive it as a “witch-hunt.” He was also named as part of the NDC’s legal team ahead of the 2020 elections.

Trobu MP demands answers from Hannah Bissiw over ‘missing’ driver [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/trobu-mp-demands-answers-from-hannah-bissiw-over-missing-driver-listen/ Fri, 18 Jul 2025 09:53:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556838 The Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency, Gloria Owusu, has raised concerns over the unexplained disappearance of Clement Ofori Addo, a man she claims was recently employed as a driver by National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Women’s Organiser, Dr. Hannah Bissiw.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MP alleged that Mr. Addo was dismissed from his job about four days ago. Since then, none of his family members have seen or heard from him, she said.

“I want to ask Hannah Bissiw where her driver, Clement, is. At the moment, Hannah Bissiw is out of the country, and his driver is nowhere to be found. In due course, Ghanaians will hear from his family. Even if he has committed an offence, where is he?” Mrs. Owusu questioned.

The MP further drew parallels with a past incident involving former Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hammah, whose private conversations were leaked by her driver, suggesting that the current situation may also warrant public scrutiny.

She, however, urged Mr. Addo to reach out to his family if his disappearance was voluntary.

The circumstances surrounding the driver’s disappearance remain unclear.

Minority stages walkout over Ayariga’s remarks on Akwatia seat https://www.adomonline.com/minority-stages-walkout-over-ayarigas-remarks-on-akwatia-seat/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 20:04:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556760 The Minority in Parliament on Thursday, July 17, 2025, staged a walkout in protest over statements made by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga regarding the Akwatia parliamentary seat.

The seat is yet to be formally declared vacant following the sudden death of the MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday, July 7, 2025.

During proceedings, the Bawku Central MP raised concerns about the delay in officially announcing the vacancy, referencing Parliament’s visit to the late MP’s family.

“Whenever a vacancy occurs in Parliament, the Clerk of Parliament shall notify the Electoral Commission in writing within seven days after becoming aware. Mr. Speaker, if Ghanaians ask the Clerk if they are aware or not, can he say he is not aware?” he questioned.

He continued, “After being informed by the Leader of the Caucus through a statement in this House, the Clerk himself followed up at his house and met the family members of the deceased, and they confirmed to him that the deceased had passed. And this was on national television.”

Responding to the concerns, Speaker Alban Bagbin explained that Parliament must first receive official communication from the bereaved family before the Clerk can notify the Electoral Commission. “We cannot act without formal notice,” he emphasised.

Tensions heightened when Ayariga alleged that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had already begun circulating campaign posters featuring the late MP’s widow, Mavis Kumi, suggesting her interest in contesting the upcoming by-election.

The Minority described Ayariga’s comments as insensitive and ill-timed, stating that they politicised a moment of grief. In protest, they exited the chamber.

Six months is long enough for Mahama to fight galamsey – Tony Aidoo https://www.adomonline.com/six-months-is-long-enough-for-mahama-to-fight-galamsey-tony-aidoo/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 12:36:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556560 Former Senior Presidential Aide and National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Dr. Tony Aidoo, has warned President John Mahama to decisively deal with illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, within the next six months or risk losing the 2028 elections.

He said the continued presence of galamsey poses a serious threat to the environment and public health, noting that contaminated water and food are slowly killing Ghanaians.

“If you are drinking water, you are scared. The food you eat, you are scared whether it is contaminated by metals,” he said on Joy News, adding that fear and insecurity have gripped many communities.

Dr. Aidoo criticised the previous Akufo-Addo-led government for its failure to resolve the crisis, cautioning Mahama not to repeat that mistake.

“Akufo-Addo didn’t care, so don’t say Ghanaians don’t care about your administration. If you don’t solve the galamsey problem, in 2028 Ghanaians will vote the NDC out,” he warned.

Dr. Aidoo also cited reports of a Municipal Chief Executive in the Ashanti Region allegedly involved in illegal mining, questioning President Mahama’s silence on the matter.

“So far, there is no response from this man. What is the President doing?” he asked.

While acknowledging initiatives like the Blue Water Project and making the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (Gold Board) the sole legal gold buyer, Dr. Aidoo said these policies are inadequate without eradicating illegal mining itself.

“Stop the galamsey, stop the damage to our waters and forests. Programs will fail if illegal mining continues unchecked,” he said.

He called for the deployment of military force to clamp down on illegal miners.

“Bring 1,000 men, two battalions, and fetch them out. If necessary, shoot to kill because they are killing us,” he asserted, describing the menace as an assault on Ghana’s territorial integrity.

Although Dr. Aidoo rated the Mahama-led government 70 percent overall, he downgraded it to 60 percent due to its weak fight against galamsey.

“Six months is long enough. Galamsey must be eliminated and uprooted from our society. It doesn’t matter who profits from it,” he concluded.

Kusaug NDC executives condemn burning of Bawku Naba’s statue https://www.adomonline.com/kusaug-ndc-executives-condemn-burning-of-bawku-nabas-statue/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 13:48:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556067 Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Kusaug Traditional Area have strongly condemned the burning of the Bawku Naba’s statue, describing it as a deliberate provocation and a declaration of war against the people of Kusaug.

At a press conference on Tuesday, July 15, the constituency executives alleged that the July 13 incident formed part of a coordinated attack involving armed individuals of Mamprusi origin, reportedly accompanied by military escorts.

“This government has not only failed to protect our people but has desecrated the image of our revered overlord, His Royal Majesty Zugraan Bawku Naba, by setting ablaze his statue—an act that is provocative and amounts to a declaration of war,” the executives stated.

The group accused the government of complicity through inaction, warning that such provocations were escalating tensions in an already volatile region.

They also criticised the government’s handling of the protracted Bawku chieftaincy dispute, calling the approach ineffective and politically motivated.

“Instead of taking bold and lawful steps to resolve the chieftaincy issue, the government has outsourced its responsibility to the Asantehene, while perpetrators of violence walk free,” they said.

According to the executives, the destruction of the statue has further deepened perceptions among Kusaug residents that justice is being sacrificed for political convenience.

“This crisis has fuelled the growing belief that the government has chosen political expediency over justice,” they added.

The NDC leaders called for swift and decisive action to restore calm and prevent further escalation. They cautioned that continued tolerance of such acts could plunge the region into deeper conflict.

Bawku: NDC executives in 6 Kusaug constituencies accuse Mahama of betrayal https://www.adomonline.com/bawku-ndc-executives-in-6-kusaug-constituencies-accuse-mahama-of-betrayal/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 13:45:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556065

A group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency executives from the Kusaug Traditional Area has expressed disappointment in President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of neglecting the worsening security crisis in Bawku.

At a press conference held on Tuesday, July 15, the executives from Binduri, Bawku Central, Pusiga, Tempane, Zebilla, and Garu said Mahama’s silence on the renewed violence in the area has left many feeling abandoned.

“During the December 7 election, the Kusaug people voted not just for hope and progress, but for survival—placing their trust in the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama,” a spokesperson said. “But that trust is now dangerously eroded.”

The executives cited the July 13 attack and the alleged burning of the Bawku Naba’s statue as signs of escalating tension. They said Mahama has failed to show leadership at a time when the Kusaug people expected decisive intervention.

“We are at a point where our own people see us as enablers of a system that has betrayed them completely,” they added. “We refuse to continue risking our lives and integrity in the name of a government that appears to have no respect for our people.”

They warned that without urgent and meaningful action from Mahama, the NDC risks losing its grassroots support in the region.

“We cannot defend what has become indefensible. The people of Kusaug have reached their limit,” they concluded.

The statement marks a rare public rebuke from party executives in the region and reflects growing frustration with the NDC’s handling of the long-running Bawku conflict.

Galamsey: I will resign if… – Yakubu Abanga https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-i-will-resign-if-yakubu-abanga/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 11:46:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555997

The Third National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yakubu Abanga, has declared his willingness to resign from his position if investigations find him complicit in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

His comment comes in the wake of a directive from the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, instructing the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate Mr. Abanga and the NDC’s National Organiser, Joseph Yamin, over allegations of fuelling unauthorised anti-galamsey taskforces.

“I am putting my position on the line, that if anybody should be bold and come out with evidence against me, Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, that I am into galamsey or I have formed a taskforce to extort money from people and bring it to me in Accra, I will resign today from my position,” Mr. Abanga said in an interview.

He described the allegations as “baseless, malicious and a calculated attempt to dent my hard-earned reputation.”

The controversy stems from accusations made by a group of small-scale miners who, in a recent press statement, accused the two NDC national executives of backing fake anti-galamsey taskforces. According to the miners, the so-called task forces have been invading legitimate mining sites across the Ashanti and Western Regions.

Leader of the aggrieved miners, Andrew Abban, alleged that these taskforce operatives wear camouflage and are armed with weapons, terrorising miners at sites in Sekondi, Bekwai, Offinso, Prestea, and other areas.

In a letter on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, the Attorney General directed EOCO to interrogate Mr. Abanga and Mr. Yamin, and to extend the probe to others found complicit in illegal mining activities.

“The scope of this investigation should include the matters highlighted in Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s report on illegal mining,” the letter stated.

Although Mr. Abanga says he has not officially received the letter, he has pledged full cooperation with any investigations, reiterating his readiness to step down if found guilty.

The development adds another layer to Ghana’s intensifying national debate on illegal mining, corruption, and political accountability.

NDC approached me to contest Mfantseman, Ayawaso West Wuogon seats – Prof. Gyampo https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-approached-me-to-contest-mfantseman-ayawaso-west-wuogon-seats-prof-gyampo/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 15:23:18 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555638 The Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has revealed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) approached him on two occasions to contest as its parliamentary candidate.

According to him, the first approach came ahead of the 2016 general elections for his hometown constituency, Mfantseman, and the second was in the lead-up to the 2019 Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Prof. Gyampo disclosed this during an appearance on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, where he addressed public concerns about his recent appointment under the Mahama-led administration.

“President Mahama first invited me in the lead-up to the 2016 election to contest in my hometown, Saltpond, Mfantseman. But I didn’t feel the time was right. In Ayawaso West Wuogon, after Boakye Agyarko’s death, the call came again. I was then a visiting scholar at the University of Bristol. But I insisted on continuing to teach,” he recalled.

However, he noted that when the opportunity to serve arose a third time, he accepted it with a sense of national duty.

“I thought that if they believe I possess qualities that can contribute to nation-building and development, then I should avail myself,” he said.

Akua Afriyie apologises to NPP over Ablekuma North rerun [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/akua-afriyie-apologises-to-npp-over-ablekuma-north-rerun-video/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 08:24:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555357 The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Nana Akua Afriyie, has rendered an unqualified apology to the party’s leadership after defying a directive not to participate in the parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Although the party has yet to issue a public statement on the matter, Madam Afriyie disclosed her apology during an engagement with journalists on Monday.

She explained that her decision to apologise followed concerns raised at an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the Alisa Hotel.

“NEC’s decision was right and apt because I won, but there was a deliberate attempt to subvert the will of the people,” she said.

“I believe that but for the chaos that erupted, I would have emerged victorious. I would apologise to my party for defying the directive,” she added.

Madam Afriyie stressed that her actions were not born out of disrespect but a desire to uphold core party values.

“They wanted to show a certain principle because our acts are based on those principles: accountability, probity, and freedom. Despite the outcome of this rerun, I know that justice will prevail and we will win back the seat,” she declared.

The NPP officially boycotted the rerun after the Accra High Court on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, dismissed an injunction application to halt the election. The party had described the rerun as illegal and in contempt of court.

However, less than 24 hours before the vote, Akua Afriyie broke ranks and announced her decision to contest, stating her desire to defend her December 7, 2024, electoral victory.

At the close of polls, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, was declared the winner with 34,090 votes, while Akua Afriyie secured 33,881 votes.

Is widowhood a campaign message? – Ewurabena Aubynn asks Akua Afriyie https://www.adomonline.com/is-widowhood-a-campaign-message-ewurabena-aubynn-asks-akua-afriyie/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 11:55:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555000 Newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, has taken a swipe at her main opponent, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, for using her widowhood status as a campaign message during the recent parliamentary rerun.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem after her narrow victory on Friday, July 11, 2025, Ms. Aubynn argued that her rival, a former MP, should have focused on her past achievements rather than appealing to emotion.

“Is being a widow a campaign message? I am also an orphan with nobody except God. As a former MP, she could have campaigned on her track record, but because she didn’t do anything for constituents while in power, she had no message,” she said.

Ewurabena expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged that President John Mahama’s recent performance played a crucial role in swinging votes in her favour.

She secured 34,090 votes against Nana Akua Afriyie’s 33,881 — a tight contest decided by a rerun in 19 polling stations following a prolonged dispute over the December 2024 results.

Her victory increases the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary tally to 185 seats.

Meanwhile, four independent MPs — Kwame Asare Obeng (A Plus) of Gomoa Central, Worlasi Kpeli of Afram Plains North, Nandaya Yaw Stanley of Wulensi, and Ohene Kwame Frimpong of Asante Akim North — have declared support for the NDC, giving the party a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

In a statement, the Council expressed “grave concern” over reports of physical attacks on journalists and former Awutu Senya East MP Hawa Koomson.

According to the NPC, such acts violate individual rights and threaten the peace and stability of the country.

“The Council strongly condemns these violent acts, including the assault at the Methodist Polling Station in Odorkor, and urges all voters, security personnel, and observers to remain calm, exercise restraint, and allow the Electoral Commission and security agencies to carry out their duties peacefully,” the statement read in parts.

The Council also commended the Ghana Police Service for the swift interdiction of a policeman who slapped a journalist, Kwabena Banahene Agyekum, in the line of duty.

Mr. Agyekum sustained injuries to his right eye and face, requiring medical attention at the Cocoa Clinic in Kaneshie.

Emphasising the need for a unified front against political violence, they urged cooperation between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to prevent such occurrences.

The Electoral Commission(EC) ordered fresh voting in 19 polling stations within the constituency due to irregularities and disputes during the original December 2024 election.

The election was intended to conclude the collation of the 2024 parliamentary election results, with 261 polling stations already collated, but was marked by heightened tensions.

Ahead of the election, the NPP parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, was leading with 32,512 votes, holding a slim margin of 48 votes over the NDC candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, who has garnered 32,464 votes.

After the keen contest on Friday, Ewurabena Aubynn managed to poll 34,090 votes, while Nana Akua Afriyie obtained 33,881 votes.

Citing the assaults on former Awutu Senya East MP Mavis Hawa Koomson and journalists, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful said it was “deeply regrettable” and a serious threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Dr. Adutwum, in a statement, emphasised that such incidents weaken the foundations of Ghana’s democratic system and urged immediate steps to avert reoccurrence.

“This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past.

“As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritise the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests,” he stated.

He warned that Ghana’s hard-won democratic gains must not be reversed by what he described as acts of political aggression and intolerance.

Reflecting on the recent election outcome, Dr. Adutwum said it should serve as a reminder to all political stakeholders that power must be earned through ballots, not intimidation.

“The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores,” he said.

He urged the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence,” he stressed.

Dr. Adutwum concluded with a call for national unity and a renewed commitment to peace, law, and democratic principles.

‎PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STATEMENT BY DR. YAW OSEI ADUTWUM, NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY FLAGBEARER HOPEFUL, ON THE VIOLENCE THAT MARRED ABLEKUMA NORTH RE-RUN

I wish to express, in the strongest possible terms, my condemnation of the acts of violence that marred the just-concluded Ablekuma North re-run

The brutal assault on the former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson and a journalist from the EIB Network is not only deeply regrettable but also a threat to our democratic values.

This recurring cycle of electoral violence must come to an end and be consigned to the dark days of our past. As a country committed to democratic governance, we must prioritize the peace and stability of our nation above all other partisan and self-interests.

The collective efforts we have made over the years to build a strong and united Ghana should not be undone by acts of political intolerance, aggression, and violence.

The overwhelming political victory that Ghanaians bestowed on President Mahama should be a testament that, as a people, we should not use electoral violence to settle past political scores. Our deepened contemporary political credentials as a nation should teach us to come to terms with the fact that it is high time we kept our past political differences at bay and adopted values that will unite us as a people.

I urge all Ghanaians to remember that we are, first and foremost, one people. Political competition must never come at the expense of human dignity and life.

Our desire to see our respective parties succeed must not translate into violence or injury against fellow citizens.

Accordingly, I call on the Hon. Minister for the Interior to, as a matter of urgency, initiate a thorough investigation into the incidents of violence and ensure that the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.

Accountability is critical if we are to restore public confidence and deter future acts of electoral violence.

Let us work together to preserve the peace, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the democratic values that form the bedrock of our Republic.

Mustapha Gbande denies alleged role in Ablekuma North rerun violence https://www.adomonline.com/mustapha-gbande-denies-alleged-role-in-ablekuma-north-rerun-violence/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 14:56:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554610 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has denied allegations made by Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

According to him, the Member of Parliament accused him of inciting or directing acts of violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun election held on Friday, 11th July, 2025.

In a statement issued on Saturday, July 12, Mr. Gbande expressed shock at the Minority Leader’s claims, describing them as “false, reckless, and politically motivated.”

He insisted he had no involvement in or prior knowledge of any violent incidents at the 19 polling stations where the rerun took place.

“I categorically deny any involvement in, or prior knowledge of, any of the incidents he referred to,” Gbande said.

“Such conduct from a trained lawyer and senior member of the legislature reflects a disregard for truth and the ethical standards expected of public office holders.”

Mr. Gbande confirmed his presence in the constituency as part of routine electoral monitoring but clarified that he was not at the scene when the altercation involving former MP and Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson broke out.

“When I was called upon, I rushed to the scene to assist with efforts to de-escalate the situation. Contrary to the false narrative, I asked my driver to take Madam Hawa Koomson to the hospital,” he explained.

He condemned all unlawful acts and called for a full and impartial investigation by the Ghana Police Service to ensure that the perpetrators of any wrongdoing are brought to justice.

Mr. Gbande also urged the Electoral Commission and relevant authorities to enhance measures that safeguard electoral integrity and protect the dignity of political participants during such exercises.

In response to Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s accusations, Mr Gbande disclosed that the matter has been referred to his legal team for advice.

He warned that disinformation and character assassination pose serious threats to democratic discourse.

“It is essential that we preserve a political culture rooted in truth, accountability, and the rule of law,” he noted.

“I remain committed to promoting peace, fair participation, and responsible leadership values that should guide all political actors in our nation.”

He further reaffirmed his continued dedication to his duties, stating he remains undeterred and will carry on with honesty and conviction.

In a statement signed by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the group pointed to public remarks by Dr. Hanna Louisa Bissiw and Malik Basintale as “grotesque” and “fundamentally incompatible with democratic governance”.

Dr Bissiw, who is the National Women’s Organiser of the NDC and CEO of the Minerals Development Fund, was singled out for her comment that “violence begets violence.”

The Minority said this statement “suggested that the brutal attacks were somehow justified.”

Even more controversial was a Facebook post by Malik Basintale, Acting CEO of the Youth Employment Agency and Deputy National Communications Officer of the NDC.

According to the statement, Basintale allegedly praised the man who assaulted Hawa Koomson, calling him “the Flying Python” and joking he would lead a fictional “5K Airforce.”

“This grotesque celebration of violence against a former Member of Parliament represents a new low in Ghana’s political discourse,” the Minority declared.

Calling on President Mahama to act, the Minority stated: “The President cannot remain silent while members of his government celebrate violence against opposition figures.

“His response will define his legacy and determine whether Ghana continues on the path of democratic governance or slides toward the normalisation of political violence.”

This followed disruptions during the December 2024 elections that hindered the final results’ collation.

Over 6,000 eligible voters were anticipated to participate in this electoral contest between Nana Akua Afriyie, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Ewurabena Aubynn, the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

But for attacks and violence recorded in some polling stations, the election was generally peaceful.

The voting process at the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station was temporarily suspended due to a disturbance.

An unidentified individuals arrived in a pickup vehicle and forcibly entered the premises, despite the presence of law enforcement officers.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants overpowered the security detail and initiated an assault on several political figures, including former Member of Parliament and ex-Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, later visited the Odorkor Methodist polling station to assess reports of chaos and disturbances in the area.

Accompanied by his entourage, he toured several polling stations within the constituency to monitor the security situation and to help ensure a smooth electoral process.

Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak, also visited the constituency and urged calm while condemning the chaos that broke out

At the end of the polls, the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious, securing 34,090 votes in the closely contested election.

Her main contender, the NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie polled 33,881 votes.

This victory marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time in 28 years since the NDC has won the seat which is a stronghold of the NPP.

With this outcome, the NDC flips the Ablekuma North seat, one of the constituencies where parliamentary elections were rerun following a court order.

Aubynn’s win adds to the opposition party’s tally in Parliament and is seen as a significant political gain in the Greater Accra Region.

With the win, the NDC has secured 184 seats, constituting two-third majority in parliament.

The rerun was marred by incidents of violence, including reported assaults on journalists and party officials, prompting calls for investigations and accountability.

In a statement, Madam Koomson confirmed that she was physically assaulted by individuals she described as “NDC machomen” while peacefully observing proceedings at one of the polling centres.

She further disclosed that her personal mobile phone was forcibly taken from her during the incident.

As a result, she warned the public to treat any calls, messages, social media posts, or broadcasts originating from her number after the incident as unauthorized.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Nukpenu described some of the incidents as regrettable but raised doubts about the accuracy and origin of certain videos circulating online.

“The attacks must be condemned, but I am happy that there were no gunshots or deaths. It must be on record that the thugs are not from NDC stock. They could be from the NPP because, in politics, when you disappoint people, they can turn against you. But some of these incidents are being exaggerated and could have even been generated through AI,” he stated.

Reacting specifically to the attack on former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, Mr. Nukpenu said he was shocked by the news.

According to him, he met and interacted with Madam Koomson, Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku, and Political Aide to Dr. Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, at the Methodist Church polling station where the attack reportedly occurred.

Expressing his sympathy, Mr. Nukpenu added that the party intends to visit Madam Koomson to commiserate with her and offer an apology.

He also expressed optimism that the police will investigate the incidents thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Ablekuma North rerun has drawn national attention following months of political wrangling over the results of the 2024 parliamentary election.

The Electoral Commission (EC) ordered a rerun in 19 polling stations after disputes over missing endorsements and irregularities.

This is the face of the man who assaulted JOYNEWS digital journalist Sally Martey during violent scenes at the Ablekuma North constituency parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11, 2025.

The man, wearing a cloth mask that partially concealed his face, deliberately turned toward Sally as she walked near the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station. He approached her from behind and launched a vicious and unprovoked attack, slapping and shoving her forcefully.

“I did nothing. He just came at me and attacked me,” a shaken Sally recounted after the incident.

Sally Martey, known for her extensive on-the-ground coverage of major protests and political events in Accra, was on assignment to report on the rerun when the assault occurred. The attacker is believed to be part of a group of well-coordinated thugs who stormed the polling station, disrupting the voting process.

The attack on Sally is just one of several disturbing incidents recorded during Friday’s exercise. Earlier, a GHOne TV journalist was also assaulted—this time by a police officer. The officer involved has since been interdicted and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau.

In a separate incident that has since gone viral, former Fisheries Minister and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was physically assaulted and pushed to the ground by a group of unidentified men during the chaos.

The election was marred by chaos.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other media advocacy groups have strongly condemned the attacks, calling them cowardly and a direct threat to press freedom and democracy.

With the rerun marred by violent disruptions, media watchdogs and election observers have warned of a dangerous trend of rising hostility toward journalists in Ghana’s democratic space.

JOYNEWS condemns attack on its journalist

JOYNEWS, where Sally works, has condemned the attack on her. Here is the full text of a statement it issued in Accra on Friday.

“JOYNEWS strongly condemns the assault of one of our journalists by an unknown thug during the Ablekuma North constituency rerun. The journalist, who was on the ground to carry out her legitimate duties as a member of the press, was attacked without provocation while covering the electoral process.

This attack is an affront not just to JOYNEWS, but to press freedom and democracy in Ghana. No journalist should be intimidated, harassed, or assaulted for doing their job, especially during such a critical civic exercise as an election.

We call on the Ghana Police Service to swiftly investigate this incident and bring the perpetrator to justice. We also urge the Electoral Commission and all political stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of media professionals at all polling centres.

JOYNEWS remains committed to upholding the public’s right to timely, accurate, and impartial information. We will not be deterred by acts of intimidation.”

I don’t feel sorry one bit for Hawa Koomson – Hannah Bissiw [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/i-dont-feel-sorry-one-bit-for-hawa-koomson-hannah-bissiw-audio/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 16:22:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554334 National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Louisa Hannah Bissiw, says she feels no sympathy for former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who was assaulted during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi News, Dr. Bissiw condemned the violence that disrupted the election at 19 polling stations but made it clear she cannot empathize with the former Fisheries Minister.

“I condemn violence, but please don’t ask me to feel sorry for her because I’ll be lying before you and before God. I don’t feel sorry one bit,” she stated.

Dr. Bissiw alleged that she was once a victim of an attack allegedly orchestrated by Madam Koomson and questioned whether she deserved such treatment.

“Ask her if I deserved the men she brought to come and attack me. Ask her about the people shot and killed at Kasoa and the organiser that died. Did those people deserve it?”

The outspoken NDC executive recalled previous instances of electoral violence and questioned whether Hawa Koomson had shown remorse for her alleged role in them.

“Ask her if the people she attacked deserved it. When I, a parliamentary candidate, was assaulted, did I deserve that? Ask her about the slaps I received when I was pulled out of my moving vehicle and beaten. Honourable Amartey, the former DCE for Teshie, and his wife were beaten in Ayawaso just for trying to rescue me.”

She concluded that if Hawa Koomson believed she deserved those past attacks, “then she deserves better.”

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was marred by chaos, arrests, and allegations of impersonation and vote-buying.

Eyewitnesses say a group of men arrived in a pickup and on several motorbikes, storming the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station and triggering panic among voters and officials.

Despite increased security, violence broke out. Hawa Koomson was seen on video being assaulted, and reports suggest she attempted to use pepper spray on the crowd but was overpowered.

Bawumia condemns attacks amidst Ablekuma North rerun https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-condemns-attacks-amidst-ablekuma-north-rerun/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 15:40:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554314

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has condemned the violent attacks recorded in parts of the Ablekuma North constituency.

The Electoral Commission had earlier promised a peaceful and transparent process following months of legal disputes surrounding the December 2024 parliamentary results in the constituency, which left the seat vacant.

However, the rerun took a different turn as pockets of violence were reported.

In a media interview, Dr. Bawumia described the development as disturbing, stating that it betrays democratic principles.

He appealed to President John Mahama to call to order the thugs believed to be supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and to take decisive action.

“This is not the democracy that we want to see in Ghana. Our supporters are being attacked by thugs in the presence of the police, who have been unable to protect them,” he said.

Two journalists, Kwabena Banahene Agyekum of the EIB Network and Sally of JoyNews, were assaulted while covering the polls.

Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was also reportedly attacked by an irate group at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station.

Other victims included NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and a female party agent, both reportedly injured amid the turmoil.

NDC Organiser allegedly shuts down Hohoe NADMO office https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-organiser-allegedly-shuts-down-hohoe-nadmo-office/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 15:27:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554307

Operations at the Hohoe Municipal office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) have come to a standstill after the Constituency Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Wodey Samuel, locked up the premises in protest over a recent appointment.

Mr. Wodey, who was reportedly considered for the role of Municipal NADMO Director, took the action after the position was given to his deputy, Raphael Kumaga. Describing the decision as an “injustice,” he is demanding that the appointment be reversed before the office can resume operations.

However, a former NDC executive in the Hohoe Constituency told Citi News that Mr. Wodey had earlier declined the NADMO position, opting instead to pursue a role at the Bank of Ghana office in Hohoe.

After failing to secure the Bank of Ghana job, he allegedly attempted to reclaim the NADMO role, which had already been assigned to Mr. Kumaga.

Municipal authorities are yet to officially comment on the matter. Meanwhile, the office closure has raised concerns among residents and party members, who are calling for urgent intervention to restore normalcy and resume essential disaster management services.

Providing transport support to voters does not constitute vote-buying – Minister https://www.adomonline.com/providing-transport-support-to-voters-does-not-constitute-vote-buying-minister/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 14:55:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554279

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has dismissed allegations that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn, is engaging in vote-buying during the ongoing rerun elections.

Speaking to Citi News, Madam Ocloo justified what critics describe as “vote-buying,” insisting that providing transportation money—commonly known as “T&T”—to voters is a longstanding practice and not a form of inducement.

“People have to come and vote, so if such people come, you have to give them the T&T to go and vote. I do not think that is vote buying,” she said. “If you think that is vote buying, you can also go and buy their vote. It’s as simple as that.”

The Shai Osudoku MP explained that the support is targeted at known party loyalists who have already committed to voting for the NDC.

“If someone is loyal to you, why wouldn’t such a person vote for you with or without money? I do not think giving the person transportation is going to affect the integrity,” she noted.

According to Madam Ocloo, she shared her contact details on radio and received several calls from voters—some from as far as Tarkwa and Kumasi—seeking help to travel to their polling stations.

“I told them that when they come, they should give me a call for their T&T. We are not giving out money. I am saying that we are supporting them with their T&T,” she emphasized.

She further questioned the logic behind the allegations: “When someone calls you, saying that he or she doesn’t have money for transportation, and I tell them to hail a car and I will pay, is that vote buying?”

“If the person is from the NPP, I do not think such a person will call me for obvious reasons. It means such a person is already aligned with us. And equally, in the NPP, people call them for money for T&T,” she added.

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun is underway in 19 polling stations following legal disputes over the December 2024 election results. Both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are optimistic about securing the seat.

The IGP’s visit follows violent incidents recorded at some of the 19 polling stations involved in the rerun, including attacks on media personnel and a prominent political figure.

Two journalists — Kwabena Banahene Agyekum of the EIB Network and Sally of JoyNews — were assaulted while covering the polls. Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was also reportedly attacked by an irate group at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station.

The Electoral Commission had promised a peaceful and transparent process following months of legal disputes surrounding the December 2024 parliamentary results in the constituency, which left the seat vacant.

Despite the isolated incidents, electoral officials reported that voting continued smoothly in most polling centers, with calm but steady turnout observed.

The rerun is expected to determine the final occupant of the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat.
