“Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” protest in pictures https://www.adomonline.com/y%c9%9bn-suro-ahunahuna-protest-in-pictures/ Tue, 23 Sep 2025 16:21:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2581519

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, launched its highly publicized “Yɛn Suro Ahunahuna” protest in Accra.

Hundreds of supporters took to the streets to voice their anger over what they described as harassment and injustice directed at party members.

The demonstration commenced at Obra Spot, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, and proceeded toward the Ghana Police Service headquarters, where NPP leaders submitted a petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Party leaders accused the police of allowing itself to be used by the government to target and intimidate opposition members.

They also submitted a petition to the Presidency, which was received on behalf of the President by the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Vice President, Alexander Segbefia.

The NPP said the march was intended to draw public attention to what they described as a rising pattern of politically motivated arrests and investigations, asserting that the rights of their members and supporters were being undermined.

The event saw the participation of current and former Members of Parliament, party officials, and other New Patriotic Party members.

#StopGalamseyNow: Youth march in Accra to demand immediate action [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/stopgalamseynow-youth-march-in-accra-to-demand-immediate-action-photos/ Mon, 22 Sep 2025 16:31:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2581163 Several young Ghanaians took to the streets of the capital on Monday to demand an immediate end to illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, due to the havoc on the nation’s environment and livelihoods.

The protest, led by youth groups and civil society activists, drew attention to the destruction of farmlands, pollution of water bodies, and the loss of sustainable income opportunities for many rural communities.

Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators called on President John Dramani Mahama to impose a nationwide ban on galamsey and to halt all mining activities within forest reserves and water sources.

The march was spearheaded by the Democracy Hub, a pressure group known for its campaigns against corruption, poor governance, and environmental damage. Organizers said the protest forms part of a wider effort to hold government accountable for protecting Ghana’s natural resources.

This action followed a candlelight vigil held the previous evening at Revolution Square. Monday’s march began at the Accra Mall and was scheduled to end at Jubilee House, where organizers intended to present a petition to the President.

Participants vowed that the demonstration was just the beginning of sustained pressure. “We will not stop until the government shows real commitment to protecting our environment,” one protester said.

Unlike past demonstrations, this protest was largely peaceful, with security personnel remaining on the sidelines and avoiding interference.

The march also attracted notable figures, including 2024 presidential candidate Kofi Koranteng, who joined the protesters in solidarity.

His presence underscored the growing national and political weight of the fight against illegal mining.

Kantamanto Market traders highlight struggles, urge government intervention [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/kantamanto-market-traders-highlight-struggles-urge-government-intervention-photos/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 13:02:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580564 Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show on Friday, August 19, 2025, was broadcast live from the vibrant Kantamanto Market, where second-hand clothing sellers shared their daily struggles and appealed for support from both the public and authorities.

The traders highlighted several recurring challenges, with the unstable exchange rate topping their concerns.

They explained that the continuous depreciation of the cedi against major foreign currencies has not brought them any relief.

Instead of reduced costs, they are forced to purchase bales of clothing at the same — or in some cases, even higher — prices than before.

This situation, they lamented, has left them with shrinking profit margins and little room to sustain their businesses.

Another major concern raised by the traders was the growing presence of hawkers and unregulated vendors who display their goods along the roadside.

They explained that these roadside sellers lure customers away from the main market, creating an unfair playing field. As a result, many established stallholders often end the day without making a single sale, despite spending long hours at their stalls.

The traders therefore appealed passionately to local authorities to step in and enforce order, stressing that proper regulation will ensure fairness for all and help preserve Kantamanto’s reputation as a leading trading hub.

Leaders of the Used Clothing Association echoed these frustrations but also proposed ways forward. Sampson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Director of the Importers and Exporters Association, and Daniel Ampadu, Vice Chairman of the Association, both underscored the importance of stronger collaboration between authorities and market leaders to regulate activities around Kantamanto. Secretary of the Association, Samuel Darko Apenteng, emphasized the urgency of finding practical measures to ease the financial pressures on traders while ensuring fair competition.

Kantamanto Market Coordinator, Kakari Mensah, added that with sustained dialogue and coordinated efforts, the market could once again flourish as Ghana’s central hub for second-hand clothing trade.

In unison, the representatives stressed that the sellers are not asking for charity but for fairness, structure, and clear policies that enable them to trade sustainably.

Their collective call was directed at the relevant authorities to restore order in the market, curb the menace of roadside trading, and introduce measures that safeguard the livelihoods of thousands of families who depend on the used clothing business.

The spiritual significance of the Bakatue Ritual at Fetu Afahye [Photos + Video] https://www.adomonline.com/the-spiritual-significance-of-the-bakatue-ritual-at-fetu-afahye-photos-video/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 10:13:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574373 As part of the vibrant Fetu Afahye celebration, one of the most symbolic and spiritually significant events is the performance of the Bakatue Ritual, literally meaning “the opening of the lagoon.”

This centuries-old ceremony, deeply rooted in the traditions of Cape Coast, marks the official lifting of the ban on the lagoon—a sacred period during which fishing activities are halted.

The ritual is more than a cultural display; it is a spiritual reconnection with the waters that sustain the community. Once the lagoon is reopened, fishermen are permitted to return, symbolizing renewal, abundance, and harmony between humanity and nature.

Traditionally, it is believed that the reopening brings fishermen a bountiful catch, enough to support families and feed the many visitors who throng Cape Coast during the festival.

Beyond its spiritual depth, the Bakatue Ritual has grown into a major cultural attraction. Each year, tourists and cultural enthusiasts gather to witness this powerful blend of spirituality, tradition, and community celebration. For the people of Cape Coast, it serves as a reminder of their heritage, identity, and values passed down through generations.

The Fetu Afahye, with its colorful processions, music, dance, and sacred rituals such as the Bakatue, remains one of Ghana’s most celebrated festivals. It embodies resilience, unity, and cultural pride, while offering visitors a chance to experience authentic Ghanaian tradition at its finest.

Addressing the gathering, President John Mahama said the annual memorial should be regarded as a national duty and an opportunity to reflect on the late leader’s legacy.

“If there’s one lesson we draw from the life of President Mills, it is that no challenge is insurmountable when we lead with integrity, when we listen with empathy, and when we govern with principle,” Mahama said.

He also linked the current administration’s Reset Agenda to the strong foundation laid by President Mills through the Better Ghana Agenda.

Mahama described President Mills’s leadership as an era defined by service, integrity, and principle, rather than political insults.

A total of six wreaths were laid during the ceremony. One was laid on behalf of the widow, Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills, by Krowor MP Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, with support from Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo and Minister for Fisheries, Hon. Emelia Arthur.

The event attracted over 5,500 delegates from across the nation, all gathered to engage in essential discussions aimed at redefining the party’s direction following its challenges in the 2024 general elections.

The conference was held under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” highlighting a period of reflection and a commitment to realigning with the party’s founding principles.

Key focal points of the conference included a renewed emphasis on internal democracy and strategic reform, encompassing vital areas such as constitutional amendments, electoral processes, grassroots mobilization, governance, and policy development.

However, delegates voted against two significant constitutional amendment proposals: Motion 17 and Motion 54. Motion 17 aimed to amend Article 7(30) of the NPP Constitution to permit Regional Executive Committees to appoint independent supervisors for polling station and electoral area elections, which would exclude constituency-level officers from this responsibility. Delegates expressed concerns that this change could undermine grassroots participation and oversight.

Similarly, Motion 54 proposed to redefine the term “youth” within the party as members aged 35 and under, rather than the existing ceiling of 40 years.

The conference featured notable attendees, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP Presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, as well as esteemed senior members of the party, both past and present, former ministers, and delegates representing various regions, all of whom contributed to the discussions held during this important event.

Photos: Interesting scenes from Eid-ul-Adha celebration at Black Star Square https://www.adomonline.com/photos-interesting-scenes-from-eid-ul-adha-celebration-at-black-star-square/ Fri, 06 Jun 2025 15:01:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542347 Eid ul-Adha, known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is regarded as one of the most important observances within the Islamic calendar. This significant occasion commemorates the readiness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

On Friday, June 6, Muslims throughout the country congregated at Black Star Square to observe Eid ul-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice.

Attendees adorned themselves in vibrant attire, with Muslim women showcasing their fashion sense through colorful combinations, creating an impressive visual display. The men also exhibited their style, particularly through traditional kaftans.

President John Dramani Mahama announced bold plans to significantly reduce the cost of Hajj for Ghanaian pilgrims and formally institute an additional public holiday for Muslims.

Delivering his speech ,he acknowledged the financial strain many families endure in their quest to fulfill the religious obligation of Hajj.

He said that although his team had managed to reduce fares marginally this year, there’s room for far greater relief.

“I want to assure you that we are working closely with relevant agencies and our Saudi counterparts. If the current trend continues, I am optimistic that next year we will see a very significant drop in the Hajj fare,” Mahama declared.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has issued a clarion call for an end to the violence in Gaza and other conflict-affected regions. He implored Ghanaians and the global community to engage in moral renewal, demonstrate genuine sacrifice, and foster interfaith unity.

Dr. Sharubutu emphasized the importance of reflection among Muslims regarding the moral significance of their celebrations. He noted that the true value of these observances lies in their ability to inspire meaningful transformation and promote a shift from negativity to positivity in the best interest of society.

He cautioned that without this commitment, the virtues of Eid risk becoming mere superficial rituals.

Present at this year’s festival were several dignitaries, including the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama; the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim among others.

How onion market sparked hope, jobs, and transformation in Gomoa East https://www.adomonline.com/how-onion-market-sparked-hope-jobs-and-transformation-in-gomoa-east/ Fri, 23 May 2025 10:10:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2537745 In the heart of Gomoa East District in the Central Region of Ghana, a rapid revolution has occurred.

The latest crested onion market, once an undeveloped vast land in the outskirts of Dominase, one of the economic towns in the district, has transformed into a thriving hub of economic activity, commerce, and community culture with an explosion of hope, in the Gomoa East Onion Market.

The development is about a culinary staple that is fueling dreams and sustainable livelihoods for people in one of the country’s poverty-endemic areas.

Borne out of Accra’s ambitious decongestion plans, this market has become more than a relocation success story; it is a beacon of economic transformation, uniting farmers, traders, and dreamers from across West Africa.

The market’s origin can be traced back to a strategic split during the relocation of Accra’s iconic Agbogbloshie onion market to Adjen Kotoku in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

However, the overwhelming number of traders that moved from Agbogbloshie to Adjen Kotoku caused much more congestion than expected, forcing them to fight over space allocations. Amid confusion and despair, visionary leaders of the Onion Sellers Association who live in and around Kasoa advocated for a second hub in Gomoa East, foreseeing its potential to uplift rural livelihoods.

The leaders quickly moved to search for a place where they identified a vast land, engaged the chiefs and elders, who, upon seeing the prospects in their plan, sold the land to them.

They also had a discussion with the Gomoa East District Assembly and other relevant stakeholders who played an instrumental role in ensuring the land was released for the project.

The market, which will mark its 4th year in July this year, is the only booming onion market that serves  Central, Western, Eastern, and Western North Regions, and there is no doubt that their foresight has borne fruit.

The official market days are Mondays and Thursdays, and Sundays and Wednesdays are the days trucks laden with fragrant onions rumble in from Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, and nearby villages, while Ghanaian traders visit from every corner of the country.

At the market is a sprawling traditional market that is fast attracting all kinds of traders from the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Western Regions.

This includes foodstuff sellers, used clothing sellers, and those who deal in plastic products.

The traders complained that the market lacks infrastructure, such as stalls, well-constructed pavement to improve its accessibility and aesthetics, and roads leading to and within the market area.

Sanitation facilities such as public bathrooms, clean and well-maintained bathrooms for market users, places of convenience, and streetlights to make the market areas safe and visible are all lacking.

Any time it rains, some parts of the market become impassable, making it difficult for the traders to do their business.

The current Kasoa-Winneba road construction has affected the frontage of the market, which has further  worsened the plight of the traders.

At the market, a bag of onions costs between GHC1,200.00 and GHC1,500.00.

There are also packaged small and medium sizes that ranges from GHC50.00 to GHC300.00

Traders from other regions come in groups with Kia trucks to purchase several bags to go and sell them.

For a 19-year-old school dropout, Richard Agbetoe, the establishment of the market is a turning point for him.

Richard dropped out of school when he lost his mother, and the situation forced him to become a mate for an Aboboyaa [Commercial Tricycle] rider, which often puts his life in danger on the Kasoa-Wineba Highway.

According to him, due to the dangers Aboboyaa riders face on the road, he opted to sell fresh coconuts at Dominasi.

Richard said his new business was not fetching him much until someone asked him to sell his coconuts at the onion market.

Visibly elated, Richard Agbetoe said on each market day, he makes sales of not less than GHC200.00.

Richard says he is working hard to raise funds to learn carpentry.

Hajia Rahinatu, an onion retail trader, praised the executives of the Onion Sellers Association for their vision.

Rahinatu said she was selling at Agbogbloshie, and when the relocation of the market was announced, she became worried, thinking that she might not get a place to continue her business, but the new market has turned out to be better than Agbogbloshie.

Abena Afrah, from Assin Fosu, who had just purchased 16 bags of onions, said the location favours her business, unlike those days when she had to go to the Agbogbloshie market and faced the traffic congestion on the Ordorkor-Kasoa road.

Hannah Gomez, a second-hand clothing seller, said the market has created additional business opportunities for her because it has given her an option to sell on Mondays and Thursdays at the onion market, and also sell at the Kasoa market on Tuesdays and Fridays, thus increasing her weekly sales.

Mr Kwame Boateng, an executive member of the Dominase branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, (GPRTU) who has opened a new branch at the market, commended the chiefs who sold the land to the traders, adding that they could have simply turned them down since most land owners prefer to give their lands for building projects.

He highlighted the numerous employment opportunities that the onion market has created, mentioning, for instance, how ‘okada’ riders were cashing in at the market.

He said most of the people who visit the market from the surrounding communities rely on the commercial motorbike riders.

Kweku Mensah, an okada rider from Potsin who was plying his trade in Accra, said working at the onion market is more profitable and safer than working in Accra.

According to him, police harassment is not rampant, unlike riding in Accra.

In an interview, the Assembly Member for Assin-Dominase Electoral Area, Patrick Abakah, said the market has really helped the community and neighbouring towns, especially the market women who used to carry their goods to Kasoa and other market centres to sell.

According to him, the market’s impact extends beyond commerce, adding that the youth of Gomoa East have an opportunity to be trained in entrepreneurship, while secondary school graduates who once lingered at home now recycle goods and everyday essentials. “Some youths have even learned to recycle plastic waste into dustbins for the community,” the Assembly Member said with pride.

As the saying goes, every good thing has its advantages and disadvantages. Gomoa East is no different; the influx of traders has increased the cost of housing.

For instance, a monthly rent charge of a self-contained apartment, which was Ghc200.00, has been increased to Ghc350.00. A single room self-contained apartment which was GHC150.00, is increased to GHC250.00, while an ordinary single room, which was GH80.00 is now GHC150.00

Bare lands near Dominase are now dotted with stalls and homes, transforming the once empty land into vibrant settlements. “Since the market’s inception, many people have moved here, making our community vibrant and known,” Abakah explains.

Some traders raised concerns about the non-availability of public toilets. The Assembly Member says the District Assembly will partner with private investors to provide toilet facilities for the market.

According to the Assembly member, market days now feature a temporary CHIPS compound, where health workers attend to minor cases. For critical cases, referrals are made to Potsin Polyclinic to handle those emergencies.

With regards to the security in the market, Mr Abakah said the District Police Commander deploys officers during peak hours, while traders and locals form night patrols. “We’re vigilant,” Abakah emphasises.

Our patrols keep everyone safe.”

The market’s ambitions stretch far beyond Ghana’s borders. Foreign traders already bring goods and proposals to build permanent stores, sparking discussions with the Assembly about expansion. “In five to six years, this market could become international,” Abakah declares. “The vision is great, we want it to be recognised worldwide.”

Yet, challenges linger. Traders still lack resting areas, forcing many to rent in Dominase and its neighbouring towns.  But even this has spurred growth, as landlords and businesses capitalise on the demand.

Ghanaian wholesalers, bound by a shared reliance on the humble onion, a culinary necessity that now turns the spotlight on the onion business. Women who once balanced baskets on weary heads now negotiate deals with confidence.

Jobless young people can now earn a living.

And elders, like the Assemblyman, watch with hope: “This market isn’t just about onions. It’s about dignity, progress, and the future we’re building together.”

“The onion market is our economic blessing. It will bring long-term prosperity,”Patrick Abakah said.

AMA cracks down on traders returning during Day 3 of decongestion exercise [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/ama-cracks-down-on-traders-returning-during-day-3-of-decongestion-exercise-photos/ Fri, 23 May 2025 09:05:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2537717 On Thursday, May 22, officials from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), accompanied by police and national security personnel, continued their city-wide decongestion campaign, focusing on monitoring and enforcement.

After two days of clearing unauthorized structures, evicting street vendors, and restoring order to major parts of the capital, the operation shifted gears today.

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo, led teams patrolling previously cleared areas to ensure traders and transport operators did not return to obstruct the streets.

From Circle to the Central Business District, AMA officers closely monitored hotspots where encroachment had been rife.

Below are photos from the operation, captured by Myjoyonline photojournalist Sammy Moore, who joined the task force on the ground.

Decongestion Exercise Day 2: AMA clears illegal structures at Circle Neoplan [Photos] https://www.adomonline.com/decongestion-exercise-day-2-ama-clears-illegal-structures-at-circle-neoplan-photos/ Wed, 21 May 2025 14:35:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536966 The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has stepped up its decongestion drive as of Wednesday, May 21, targeting the busy Circle Neoplan Station.

This operation forms part of an ongoing initiative to ease congestion in the capital by removing unauthorized structures, enforcing sanitation regulations, and regulating street vendors.

The main focus of the operation is to systematically clear illegal constructions and relocate street vendors occupying areas meant for pedestrian and vehicular movement.

Alongside enforcing traffic and sanitation laws, the initiative aims to improve safety and ease movement in high-traffic zones. AMA officials emphasize the importance of restoring order and ensuring adherence to city planning regulations vital for the integrity of Accra’s urban environment.

The campaign, which began on Tuesday, May 20, initially targeted areas around the AMA Head Office and extended along key routes including Kinbu Road to Railways, from the ECG Junction to the King Tackie Tawiah Statue, and from Opera Square to Adabraka. These areas have been identified as hotspots for street vending and severe traffic congestion, necessitating immediate intervention.

Authorities have called on traders and commuters to cooperate fully with the taskforce to avoid conflicts during the enforcement process.

The Assembly also highlighted issues such as illegal electrical connections and the occupation of public spaces as makeshift residences, with individuals setting up mattresses and personal belongings in these areas.

AMA remains committed to transforming Accra into a cleaner and safer city. Officials stressed the urgent need to demolish illegal structures encroaching on bus stops, which are intended solely for passenger transit. An AMA representative noted, “Supermarkets have taken over these areas, severely disrupting public access.”

The Assembly has set strict guidelines that all bus stops in Accra must remain free from unauthorized activities and be maintained exclusively for public transport use, in line with sanitation and safety standards. “The primary goal is to ensure that all bus stops remain accessible for public use,” the representative added.

“All sanitation mandates must be upheld according to AMA standards. This focused effort at Circle Neoplan is just the beginning; similar initiatives will be rolled out at other bus stops that have been converted into trading zones,” the representative concluded.

The initiative forms part of a broader, long-term strategy to improve sanitation and ensure the free movement of both pedestrians and vehicles within the capital city.

Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey emphasized that the exercise is not a one-off action but a sustainable solution geared towards restoring order, especially in the Central Business District (CBD).

During the first phase of the operation, special attention was given to the surroundings of the AMA Head Office, where teams engaged vendors and directed them to vacate unauthorized stalls blocking pedestrian access.

At Kwame Nkrumah Circle, street vendors operating on pavements were asked to dismantle their setups to create clear walkways. Additionally, vehicles parked along the main roads were ordered to move, while individuals occupying spaces beneath the overhead bridge were also instructed to vacate.

A separate inspection at the VIP terminal revealed a heavy buildup of refuse, prompting officials to demand immediate action. Terminal management was instructed to address the sanitation issues without delay.

Mayor Allotey warned that on their next visit, failure to comply with sanitation directives would attract severe consequences, underscoring the city authorities’ firm stance on maintaining cleanliness and order in all public areas.

Photos from Opposition parties’ protest against Chief Justice’s suspension https://www.adomonline.com/photos-from-opposition-parties-protest-against-chief-justices-suspension/ Mon, 05 May 2025 15:49:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2531775 On Monday, May 5, 2025, a significant demonstration was held by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) alongside members of various minority parties, dubbed the “Save the Judiciary Demo,” in response to the suspension of the Chief Justice by President Mahama.

Demo against suspension of Chief Justice #SaveTheJudiciaryDemo

The demonstration began at the Supreme Court, where leaders presented a formal petition addressed to the Judiciary.

Participants, dressed in red attire, including armbands and headgear, marched in substantial numbers through the main streets of Accra.

After their initial gathering at the Supreme Court, the demonstrators proceeded to Parliament to submit a second petition before ending with a final submission at the Jubilee House.

The petition was received by Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament, on behalf of Parliament, while Mr. Stan Dogbe, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, accepted the petition on behalf of the President.

Presenting a petition on behalf of the group, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin claimed that President Mahama has “weaponised the security services,” deploying them in “retrogressive PNDC-style raids” targeting the homes of political opponents.

“Private citizens, including former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, have had their properties seized, their rights violated, and their dignities stripped,” he added.

He also accused the government of hypocrisy, noting that while it had previously criticised the expansion of the Supreme Court, it had now appointed seven new judges under questionable circumstances.

“You know the process of appointing judges to the Supreme Court is not what has been used. So this reset is a negative reset,” he said, urging judicial staff not to remain complacent.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin further cautioned against political vengeance.

“I also want to take this opportunity to draw the attention of the nation to come to terms with the fact that there must be an end to bitterness. If this vicious cycle of ‘you did it to me; I will do it to you’ continues, there will be no hope for our democracy,” he said.

He warned that such partisan actions could have future consequences for current judicial staff, especially with the possibility of a new government in 2028.

“I am humbly calling on all Judicial Service staff to think deeply about tomorrow. Don’t be too comfortable because today some government officials are promising you promotions, so you don’t want to speak out. We will speak up for the sake of posterity,” he added.

The NPP was joined by several allied political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, presented the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament.

This marks the first comprehensive financial roadmap introduced by the Mahama administration since taking office.

The highly anticipated budget includes significant policy measures aimed at stabilizing the economy, promoting growth, and addressing ongoing fiscal challenges.

Among the key announcements was the cancellation of several levies, including the Emissions Tax.

Dr. Forson also outlined plans to review the Value Added Tax (VAT) system, which will eventually lead to the abolition of the COVID-19 levy, though no specific timeline was provided.

He emphasized that the removal of several taxes aligns with the government’s manifesto commitments.

These include:

  • Abolishing the 10% tax on lottery winnings
  • Eliminating the 10% withholding tax on betting
  • Removing VAT on motor vehicle insurance policies
  • Scrapping the 1.5% withholding tax on processed gold for small-scale miners

“The removal of these taxes will ease the burden on households and improve their disposable income. It will support business growth and enhance tax compliance,” Dr. Forson stated.

He also addressed concerns about over 300 pharmacists who have not received their salaries since their employment by the state. He pledged immediate action to resolve the issue, stating that the 321 pharmacists employed since June 2023 deserve to be compensated for their services.

Furthermore, the Finance Minister highlighted financial allocations for various sectors in the 2025 budget, prioritizing education, infrastructure, social protection, and disaster relief. The forecourt of Multimedia was a hub of excitement on Independence Day as hundreds of people gathered for the much-anticipated Fufu Party, eager to enjoy their favorite Ghanaian delicacy.

Patrons lined up with their earthenware bowls, known as “asanka” or “apɔtɔ yiwa,” ready to be served for free. The aroma of various soups filled the air, adding to the anticipation as guests indulged in the rich culinary experience.

This year’s edition coincided with Ghana’s 68th Independence Day, making the celebration even more vibrant.

Per the program’s arrangements, attendees only needed their asanka to be served, reinforcing the event’s tradition of bringing people together through food. The much-anticipated fufu bazaar attracted a diverse mix of guests eager to savor different soups prepared by experienced chefs.

The entertainment lineup was equally thrilling, setting the perfect mood for the day.

Highlife legend Samuel Owusu was the first to take the stage, treating fans to his timeless hits like Yenka Wo Nite No, Mempe Me Ho Asem, and Kokosakyi, getting the crowd singing and dancing along.

Gospel musician Queen Esther followed with a soul-stirring performance, her powerful voice resonating with the audience. She delivered an uplifting set that left patrons in awe.

For the first time in Ghana’s history, the country’s Independence Day celebration was held at the Jubilee House, marking a significant shift from tradition.

Independence Day, which commemorates Ghana’s liberation from British colonial rule on 6 March 1957 under Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has traditionally been observed at the Black Star Square and, in recent years, rotated among regional capitals. However, the 68th anniversary was notably scaled down.

The ceremony was attended by President John Mahama, Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, former Presidents Akufo-Addo and John Agyekum Kufuor, and the former President of Tanzania.

This year’s theme, Reflect, Review, Reset, urged Ghanaians to evaluate the nation’s progress, assess its current state, and chart a path for the future. Unlike the usual large crowds at the Black Star Square, this year’s celebration was limited to a select group of guests.

The event featured a Military Guard of Honour, cultural performances by schoolchildren, and a poetry recital by a senior high school student.

In his address, President Mahama underscored the importance of unity, resilience, and patriotism, calling on Ghanaians to work together toward national development.

The celebration was documented by Myjoyonline’s photojournalist, Sammy Moore.
