The Tamale Circuit Court, presided over by Francis Asobayireh, has granted bail to Abdul-Fatawu Alhassan, the Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, in the sum of GHc100,000.

The accused is facing charges of alleged kidnapping and assault of Gbambu Chief Mohammed Mahamadu in the Gushegu District.

In addition to the bail sum, Alhassan is required to produce one surety who resides within the court’s jurisdiction in Tamale.

He is also mandated to report to the Yendi Divisional Police Command every Thursday at 3 pm.

Alhassan, who was represented by counsel Jawson Kwame, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping, and assault under the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29).

After a lengthy legal argument, the court admitted Alhassan to bail.

The court also ordered Alhassan to advise his co-accused, Checo Naa Abdul-Iddi, and other accomplices to appear voluntarily in court on the next adjourned date, September 3, 2025.

The court warned that it would not hesitate to issue bench warrants to enforce their appearance if they fail to comply.

Brief facts

It is the case of the prosecution that, on July 16, 2025, after the Gbambu Chief Mohammed Mahamadu was seen addressing a press conference challenging the authority of the overlord Yaa-Naa Abukari II in the Nanton chieftancy dispute, the accused alleged that the overlord is the one creating division since he installed a new Paramount chief for the area.

It said, days after the press conference, a viral video circulated on social media that showed four gunmen with AK-47s driving into his community, breaking into his residence at night, and abducting Gbambu Naa to an unknown location.

The prosecution said, on July 20, 2025, a viral video circulated on social media where the kidnap chief, Mohammed Mahamadu, was seen in an office being interrogated and assaulted in the company of the alleged accused person, Abdul-Fatawu and others.

The viral video generated a lot of tension within the Dagbon kingdom despite the allegation that the said chief used unprintable words on the overlord during the press conference in Nanton.

However, the IGP ordered a full-scale investigation into the abduction and assault of the Gbambu Chief.

Ghana Police Service Northern Regional Command launched a full-scale investigation after engaging the overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Naa Abukari II, in the matter for the release of the chief.

The police interrogation with the victim and further investigation identified the key ringleaders as Registrar of Dagbon Traditional Council, Abdul-Fatawu, and Checo Naa Abdul-Iddi, who were the persons who authorised the kidnapping of the chief, with two others who are on the run.

The four accused persons were summoned on July 30, 2025, by the Northern police command in Tamale to assist in the investigation.

The Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Abdul-Fatawu, who honoured the summons, was charged and subsequently granted police-enquiring bail.

The accused was subsequently charged with the offence, and the court case was adjourned to September 3, 2025.

The 1st accused person, Alhassan Fatawu, met the bail conditions, and bail has been executed for him to reappear on 3/09/2025. Investigations continue to arrest the suspects at large.

Employee of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited convicted over cable theft https://www.adomonline.com/employee-of-samatex-timber-and-plywood-company-limited-convicted-over-cable-theft/ Wed, 06 Aug 2025 08:26:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2564012 The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced an employee of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited to five years imprisonment with hard labour.

This is for damaging and stealing electrical cables worth GH¢137,046 belonging to his employer.

Samuel Agyiri, 28, a pump mechanic, pleaded guilty to causing unlawful damage and stealing.

The prosecution, led by Police Detective Chief Inspector Adams Mumuni, told the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu, that the complainant, Aziz Yakubu, is a security officer of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited.

He said the complainant resided in Samreboi No. 2 quarters, while Agyiri lived close to the Samreboi Gyantima road, both in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality.

Detective Chief Inspector Mumuni, on March 11, 2025, at about 0900 hours, Peter Adakabilla, the manager in charge of the company’s powerhouse, saw Agyiri roaming around the place within the powerhouse called ‘bars,’ where electrical cables were connected to the facility.

The Prosecution said that when the manager asked Agyiri about his mission there, he said he was not doing anything, so he was reassigned to go and work at the hogging yard.

On the same day at about 1430 hours, the manager saw Agyiri again loitering around the powerhouse and warned him to leave the premises and go home as he had already closed for the day.

He said about 15:15 hours, while the manager was at the hogging yard working, he saw Agyiri pushing a wheelbarrow towards the factory fence near the moulding mill and suspected he had stolen something he ordered him to stop.

Detective Chief Inspector Mumuni said, knowing that he would be arrested, Agyiri abandoned the wheelbarrow, picked an item and wrapped it with a polythene bag and made a swift exit.

The manager quickly contacted the complainant on the phone, and he pursued Agyiri using a motorbike and managed to arrest him.

Prosecution said the convict then confessed to the complainant that he had stolen some cables and led him to a nearby bush where they were retrieved.

Agyiri was handed over to the Samreboi police, where he admitted the offence in his caution statement and claimed financial difficulties compelled him to steal.

During the ruling, the judge directed the police to hand over the items they had retrieved to the company.

Two sisters arrested for staging abduction with help of married boyfriend https://www.adomonline.com/two-sisters-arrested-for-staging-abduction-with-help-of-married-boyfriend/ Tue, 05 Aug 2025 19:25:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563834 The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested four individuals over a staged kidnapping aimed at extorting five million naira (₦5,000,000) from a man by his two daughters and their accomplices.

Confirming the arrests, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the incident was reported on July 30, 2025, by one Mr. Innocent, a resident of Jikwoyi Phase II.

According to her, Mr. Innocent informed the Jikwoyi Police Division that his 16-year-old daughter, Miss Lead Way Innocent, had left home on July 18, 2025, to sit for an examination at Government Secondary School, Karu, Abuja, but never returned.

He later received a phone call from unknown persons demanding a ransom for her release.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jikwoyi Division immediately launched a discreet investigation,” SP Adeh stated.

“Through coordinated intelligence gathering and digital tracking, the phone number used to contact the complainant was traced to a residence in Jikwoyi Phase II. Operatives proceeded to the location, where Miss Lead Way Innocent was found in the company of one Mrs. Tina Mayowa, the wife of Mr. Mayowa Adedeji. The two were seen eating and conversing freely, showing no signs of distress.”

Further investigations led to the arrest of Miss Joy Innocent, elder sister of the alleged victim, and her boyfriend, Mr. Mayowa Adedeji.

Police findings revealed that Joy conspired with her boyfriend—who is legally married to Mrs. Tina Mayowa—to fake the kidnapping of her younger sister in a calculated attempt to defraud their father.

It was also discovered that Lead Way Innocent was not only aware of the plan but actively participated in it. She willingly stayed with the suspects throughout the period of her supposed abduction, while Joy remained at home, pretending to be unaware of her sister’s whereabouts, as their father frantically tried to raise the ransom.

The suspects are currently in custody and assisting the police with further investigations.

The arrests, made between May and July 2025, included 47 foreign nationals and 18 Ghanaians. Key operations were carried out in Sogakope, Dodowa, Sassabi Ubuntu Estate, Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, and Teshie-Nungua.

Mr Divine Selase Agbeti, Acting Director-General of the CSA, disclosed at a joint press briefing that 23 of the 25 suspects arrested at Dodowa were identified as victims of human trafficking and repatriated.

Thirteen of the 16 suspects arrested at Bortianor are also being processed for repatriation, while investigations continue into the 13 foreigners and one Ghanaian arrested at Teshie-Nungua.

“The Teshie-Nungua’s Ghanaian suspect is also being investigated and will be made to face the law when found culpable,” Mr Agbeti stated.

He said the suspects arrested in Sogakope and Sege, including a ringleader apprehended on June 1, were allegedly impersonating Members of Parliament and government officials to defraud victims under the guise of securing jobs in the security services.

From the Dodowa and Amanfro operations, authorities seized 62 laptops, 41 mobile phones, and Starlink internet equipment, indicating the scale and sophistication of the cybercrime networks.

“These operations form part of a broader national effort to combat cybercrime, human trafficking, and related offences that threaten public safety and Ghana’s digital ecosystem,” Mr Agbeti said.

Police retrieve 43 stolen luxurious cars shipped to Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/police-retrieve-43-stolen-luxurious-cars-shipped-to-ghana/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 12:58:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563295 The Ghana Police Service has recovered 43 luxury vehicles stolen from abroad and illegally shipped into the country between January and July 2025.

The vehicles, which include high-end brands such as Rolls-Royce, Audi, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, were reportedly stolen from countries in Europe and North America.

At a press briefing in Accra on Monday, August 4, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed the recoveries, attributing the success to enhanced collaboration with both local and international partners.

“The administration has stepped up efforts to fight vehicle crime by working in close collaboration with other national agencies, including the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and international partners like INTERPOL and the FBI,” she said.

She noted that intelligence-sharing had been instrumental in tracking the stolen vehicles and exposing the smuggling networks behind them.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle theft syndicates are linked to broader transnational crimes such as identity theft, insurance fraud, visa card fraud, and money laundering.

“This highlights Ghana’s growing role in global criminal supply chains—often as a destination or transit point for illicit goods,” COP Donkor added.

The recovered vehicles were traced to at least seven countries: the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Canada, the USA, Germany, Italy, and France.

She referenced INTERPOL’s Operation Safe Wheels, conducted in late 2024 and early 2025 across 12 West African nations, which identified over 150 stolen vehicles—many traced to Ghana.

Of the 43 vehicles recovered, investigations into 18 have been completed. The courts have ordered that those cars be returned to their countries of origin. So far, eight have been repatriated, while 10 await final procedures. The remaining 25 cases are still under judicial review.

“It is important to note that for every vehicle impounded, thorough investigations are carried out, and importers are given the opportunity to provide proof of ownership or purchase from the country of origin,” she stressed.

However, COP Donkor expressed concern that in nearly all the cases, individuals who cleared the vehicles in Ghana failed to provide such documentation.

“It is sad to note that in almost all the cases mentioned above, those who clear the vehicles in Ghana are unable to provide proof of ownership or purchase of the vehicles from the country of origin,” she said.

She cautioned that payment of customs duties does not equate to legitimate acquisition.

“Let me indicate here that payment of customs duties in Ghana does not mean that the vehicle was legitimately acquired from the country of origin,” she warned.

The CID revealed that criminals often use sophisticated techniques such as altering Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and falsifying ownership records to avoid detection.

The operation between the CID, Customs Division, INTERPOL, and the FBI remains ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle Ghana’s role as a hub for stolen vehicles.

Ex-convict teacher sentenced to 48 years for defilement https://www.adomonline.com/ex-convict-teacher-sentenced-to-48-years-for-defilement/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 10:36:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563242 An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Sokah Phidels Load, a 47-year-old teacher and ex-convict, to 48 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after he was found guilty of defiling a seven-year-old girl.

The presiding judge, Mr. G.A. Inkumsah-Ishum, found Sokah guilty after a full trial. Sokah had pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecution led by Police Chief Inspector Edna Aningah, the convict has a history of similar criminal behaviour.

The prosecutor noted that in 2011, Sokah was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for defilement, which was later reduced to 15 years on appeal, a sentence he completed in 2020.

Despite his past conviction, he secured employment in a basic school without the school being aware of his criminal background.

Case background

According to the prosecutor, the complainant is the father of the victim and lives with his daughter in Accra.

She added that Sokah, who lived on the school’s premises, had been employed at the victim’s school for just three weeks.

“On February 6, 2025, at around 7.15 a.m., the victim’s father dropped her off at school. Sokah, who was then in his office located at the Administrator’s Block, observed the girl entering the common hall to place her drink in the school’s fridge.

He called her to his office under false pretences,” she explained.

The prosecutor stated that when the victim entered Sokah’s office, he asked her to show him her panty, which she did, afterwards he took the victim to the teachers’ washroom and instructed her to sit on the water closet and angrily asked her to remove her panty and cover her face, which she did with her uniform but peeped to watch him.

She added that the convict then opened his flap, knelt and inserted his finger and penis into the victim’s private part, leading to her screaming for help.

Sokah, however, covered her mouth and warned her not to tell anyone else, he would cane her, but the victim later confided in another pupil who was the sister of her classmate. That pupil then reported the incident to school authorities.

She said that the school promptly called the victim to the director’s office at the close of school, where she recounted her experience in the presence of her father.

The prosecutor said that upon realising the matter had been reported, Sokah fled the school premises and went into hiding.

“A complaint was then lodged with the police, and the victim was issued a medical form and taken for examination at a hospital.”

Chief Inspector Aningah told the court that efforts to reach Sokah proved unsuccessful until later, when he sent a voice note to the school, acknowledging that he had heard the police were searching for him, but he still refused to surrender.

The prosecutor added that the police eventually traced his hideout at Santeo, a community in Accra.

She stated that surveillance with his identification card was then mounted in the neighbourhood, leading to his arrest on March 13, 2025.

“After a thorough investigation, Sokah was charged with the offence and brought before the court,” the prosecutor stated.

NPP Chairman’s brother shot dead during robbery in his home https://www.adomonline.com/npp-chairmans-brother-shot-dead-during-robbery-in-his-home/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 07:56:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563124 The Ghana Police Service has refuted media reports claiming that officers raided the home of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Bono East Regional Chairman, Ibrahim Baba Bukari, resulting in the death of one person.

In an official statement, the Service described the reports as false and clarified that no such raid had taken place.

According to the police, the Bono East Regional Command responded to intelligence about a robbery attempt around 1:20 am on Friday, August 1, 2025.

During the operation, one of the suspects—later identified as Seidu Bukari, the brother of Baba Bukari—was shot while attempting to escape. He was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The police described the deceased as a known member of a robbery syndicate responsible for terrorising residents of Techiman and surrounding communities, primarily by stealing motorbikes for resale in Kumasi.

He was also reportedly wanted in connection with a prior robbery case under investigation.

According to the statement, the gang had returned to Techiman that night to carry out another robbery when officers intercepted them.

“Officers retrieved a motorbike and other tools believed to have been used in the attempted crime. A manhunt has since been launched for the other suspects who fled the scene,” the statement noted.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special team from the CID Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Nigerian jailed for faking identity to get Ghanaian passport https://www.adomonline.com/nigerian-jailed-for-faking-identity-to-get-ghanaian-passport/ Wed, 30 Jul 2025 09:02:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561320 The Tema District Court has sentenced a Nigerian national to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for attempting to unlawfully acquire a Ghanaian passport.

Mohammed Ogbona, alias Mohammed Alhassan, was also convicted on additional charges of unlawful entry and the fraudulent acquisition of a Ghanaian birth certificate and National Identification Card.

Presiding judge, Madam Benedicta Antwi, handed down the sentence after Ogbona pleaded guilty. He was fined 200 penalty units (GH₵2,400.00) each for attempting to obtain a Ghanaian passport and a National ID through false declarations.

In default of payment, he is to serve six months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

For acquiring a Ghanaian birth certificate through false declaration, the court sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment. He was also fined 400 penalty units (GH₵4,800.00) or, in default, serve an additional three months’ imprisonment.

An additional fine of 50 penalty units (GH₵600.00) was imposed, with a one-month prison term in default. All sentences are to run concurrently.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Jerry Foster Segbefia and supported by ASI Gillian Biney, told the court that the 32-year-old factory hand at Cimaf Cement was arrested on 16 June 2025 at the Tema Passport Application Centre during the passport application process, following suspicions regarding his nationality.

Ogbona had claimed to be a Ghanaian named Mohammed Alhassan, born at Tema General Hospital to Ghanaian parents — Alhassan Varga, a former military officer, and Rose Tetteh. However, he failed to provide evidence or lead investigators to the said parents.

Subsequent investigations revealed that he was born in Enugu State, Nigeria, to John and Rosemary Ogbona, and no birth record existed for him at the Tema General Hospital.

“He wanted the Ghanaian passport to travel to the United Kingdom for greener pastures,” Inspector Segbefia stated.

The court heard that Ogbona had engaged an agent to falsify his identity and had successfully secured a Ghanaian birth certificate (entry number 774) and a Ghana Card (ID number GHA-730706520-0) before booking an online passport application.

Further investigations established that he had entered Ghana through an unauthorised route near the Aflao border, without travel documents or immigration clearance.

Inspector Segbefia said that following a thorough investigation, Ogbona was arraigned, and the prosecution called for a custodial sentence to serve as a deterrent to the growing trend of identity fraud and unlawful entry.

Nigeria kidnappers kill 35 hostages even after ransom paid https://www.adomonline.com/nigeria-kidnappers-kill-35-hostages-even-after-ransom-paid/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 15:33:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561117 Kidnappers in Nigeria have killed at least 35 people they abducted from a village in northern Zamfara state despite ransoms being paid for their release, a local official told the BBC.

In recent years, criminal gangs in the region, known in the country as bandits, have taken to kidnapping people as a means to raise money.

In this incident, 56 people were taken from Banga village, Kauran Namoda local government area in March. The gunmen then demanded a ransom of one million naira ($655; £485) per captive, media in Nigeria report.

Local government chairman Manniru Haidara Kaura said that most of those killed were young people who “were slaughtered like rams”.

“What happened was that the bandits demanded ransom money, and after some back-and-forth, they were given what they asked for. They then released 18 people, including 17 women and one young boy, on Saturday,” Haidara added.

“Only they [the gunmen] know why they killed them. They are senseless and heartless people. They forget that they are killing their own brothers, and we will all meet before Allah.”

Residents said three pregnant women who were among the hostages gave birth while in captivity, but all the new-borns died due to lack of care.

Survivors recounted being forced to witness the brutal killing of fellow hostages before being allowed to leave the forest.

Sixteen of those released on Saturday are in hospital receiving treatment, while the bodies of the 38 killed by the bandits are unlikely to be returned as in these cases corpses are rarely released.

In a statement, the Zamfara government condemned the killings calling them “barbaric and cowardly” and declared that such atrocities added to its resolve to wipe out terrorism from the state.

“To the grieving families, we share your sorrow and pray for strength and healing. To the good people of Zamfara, remain united and vigilant. Report suspicious activities, and together, we will defeat evil.”

The government has said that the killers would be brought to justice.

In an attempt to curb the spiralling and lucrative kidnapping industry, a law was enacted in 2022 making it a crime to make ransom payments. It carries a jail sentence of at least 15 years; however, no-one has ever been arrested on those charges.

It also made abduction punishable by death in cases where victims die.

But families often feel forced to pay to save their loved ones, citing the government’s inability to ensure their safety.

Pastor in court over alleged assassination prophecy about Shatta Wale https://www.adomonline.com/pastor-in-court-over-alleged-assassination-prophecy-about-shatta-wale/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 06:44:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560742 A pastor has appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly publishing a prophecy on TikTok about the assassination of popular Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale.

Reverend Daniel Yaw Donkoh, also known as D.Y. Donkoh, was charged with the publication of false news. He pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Basit, granted him bail in the sum of GHC20,000 with three sureties, one to be justified. He is to report to the police every two weeks.

The case has been adjourned to August 27, 2025, for a Case Management Conference.

Arguing for bail, Donkoh’s counsel said the accused is a family man with four children and a known resident who founded a church at Israel, Tabora in Accra. The counsel noted that Donkoh had cooperated with the police and posed no risk of interfering with investigations.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kwadwo Aboagye told the court that the complainant, Charles Nii Armah Junior, popularly known as Shatta Wale, is a musician and businessman residing in East Legon, Accra.

On July 21, 2025, Shatta Wale’s Public Relations Manager, Samuel Baah Atuobi, also known as Sammy Flex, reported to the police that a day earlier, the team had come across a TikTok video in which Donkoh claimed he had seen a vision of Shatta Wale being assassinated by three armed men.

The prosecution said the viral video left Shatta Wale traumatised and living in fear.

Police attempts to contact Donkoh were initially unsuccessful. However, on July 25, 2025, the police received intelligence that some angry fans of Shatta Wale were planning to storm Donkoh’s church at Tabora Alhaji in protest.

To prevent any disturbance, officers proceeded to the church and invited Donkoh for questioning.

“During investigations, the accused stated that he posted the video on his TikTok page regarding the alleged assassination to get the complainant’s attention,” the prosecution added.

Police suspect the two AK-47-wielding men trailed the Toyota minibus from its Adehyie Market station to the spot near the local Church of Pentecost building before firing indiscriminately at the bus.

Police suspect the attack may be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict.

The deceased has been identified as Abiola, but the injured military officer is yet to be identified.

Police picked up both the Ghana card and health insurance card of the deceased at the scene.

Crime scene investigators from the Ashanti North Regional Police Command picked up fourteen spent shells at the scene.

Ashanti North Regional Police Commander DCOP Prince Jude Cobbinah, who confirmed the incident to Myjoyonline.com, said the armed men, one on each side of the road, opened fire on the Tamale-bound bus at about 9 p.m. on Thursday.

The driver, upon sensing danger, lowered his head to escape the onslaught.

The deceased, who was seated on the seat behind the driver, was hit by the bullets.

Final-Year Wa AMASS student stabbed during dispute with colleague https://www.adomonline.com/final-year-wa-amass-student-stabbed-during-dispute-with-colleague/ Wed, 23 Jul 2025 08:48:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558721 A final-year student of Wa T.I Ahmadiyya Senior High School (Wa Amass) is in critical condition after being stabbed during a confrontation with a colleague on campus Tuesday night.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident followed a heated altercation between two final-year students, Iddrisu Ibrahim, popularly known as Lincoln, and his friend Hafis, also known as Baayaawa.

Lincoln, a Year 3 Agricultural Science student from Bulenga, had reportedly recorded a video of Hafis without his consent. Hafis, a Year 3 General Arts student from Bawku, confronted Lincoln and demanded that the video be deleted.

When Lincoln allegedly refused to comply, Hafis is said to have threatened to stab him. Witnesses claimed Lincoln dismissed the threat and challenged Hafis to act on it.

The situation escalated when Hafis allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Lincoln in the ribs and stomach.

Following the attack, Hafis attempted to flee, but the incident quickly spread across campus. Some students reportedly mobilised for retaliation, but police arrived swiftly to restore order.

Officers arrested Hafis and placed him in custody for questioning.

Despite severe injuries, Lincoln managed to stagger from the hostel area towards the school library before collapsing.

A female student who witnessed the incident said, “When Lincoln came out, the knife was still stuck in him. Some students removed it before rushing him to the hospital.”

Lincoln is currently receiving treatment at the Wa Regional Hospital. Medical staff have described his condition as critical but stable.

Police investigations are ongoing. School authorities have not yet released an official statement, but security presence on campus has been significantly increased to forestall any further disturbances.

Five injured as Dabokpa, Vittin Tech students clash; police recover weapons https://www.adomonline.com/five-injured-as-dabokpa-vittin-tech-students-clash-police-recover-weapons/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 08:40:02 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558285 Five students have reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries following a clash between Dabokpa Technical Institute and Vittin Technical Senior High School.

This was disclosed by Northern Regional Minister, Adolf John Ali, at the Northern Development Cause Forum in Tamale.

However, according to Chief Inspector Lukman Neindow, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, police reports indicated that only one student from Dabokpa Technical Institute was wounded and taken to the hospital.

He said the police were called in around 2:30 a.m. on July 19, 2025, regarding the clash between the two schools. The command subsequently deployed officers to the scene.

Chief Inspector Neindow stated that the rioting involved students pelting stones at each other, adding that the cause of the clash is yet to be determined. Portions of the fence wall of Vittin Technical Senior High School were also destroyed.

He said the police have since restored calm to the area, and a 24-hour police guard has been stationed between the two neighboring schools to prevent further violence.

A search conducted in the dormitories of the two schools uncovered implements, including scissors and machetes.

No arrests have been made so far. Police are reviewing footage of the incident, and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is currently holding a meeting on the matter.

Four suspects discharged in former GPHA manager’s murder case after 5 years https://www.adomonline.com/four-suspects-discharged-in-former-gpha-managers-murder-case-after-5-years/ Tue, 22 Jul 2025 06:47:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558219 Four suspects who had been standing trial for the 2019 murder of Josephine Asante, former Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), have been discharged.

The TDC District Magistrate Court in Tema, presided over by Benedicta Antwi, acted on the advice of the Attorney-General’s Department, which cited insufficient evidence to continue with the prosecution.

Those discharged include the deceased’s houseboy, Christian Adjei, along with Richard Kwabena Kwakye, Dominic Owusu, and Frederick Owusu Oppong.

Chief Inspector Hilda Asante Sarkodie, who led the prosecution, told the court that the Attorney-General’s advice — signed by Principal State Attorney Joshua Sackey — concluded that the suspects had been arrested and charged based merely on suspicion.

The advice emphasised that suspicion without corroborating material evidence was inadequate to sustain criminal charges.

The report further questioned the credibility of the prosecution’s case and cast doubt on the identification of the actual perpetrator, leading to the recommendation that all four be discharged.

Josephine Asante was found murdered under mysterious circumstances at her home at Emefs Estates near Afienya on January 13, 2019, shortly after returning from a GPHA staff party.

The investigation has since been plagued by multiple arrests, re-arrests, and prolonged procedural delays, with no clarity on who committed the crime.

While the court’s decision brought relief to the accused persons, it sparked outrage and disappointment among the deceased’s family, who have long demanded justice.

The court advised the bereaved family to consult a lawyer and consider petitioning the Attorney-General if they were dissatisfied with the decision.

Speaking to Joy News after the ruling, Josephine’s brother, Robert Tandoh, expressed frustration and disbelief.

“I’m shocked but not surprised. It’s taken us five years to get here, five years of investigations, only to be told there’s insufficient evidence. What exactly was the police investigating all this time?” he questioned.

Mr. Tandoh criticised the Attorney-General’s advice for failing to recommend further investigations, calling it a blow to the family’s search for justice.

“This just confirms what I’ve always suspected — that in Ghana, you can get away with anything,” he said.

Despite the setback, he affirmed the family’s determination to continue pursuing justice and their intent to obtain court documents for possible legal action.

He also called on the media and the public to help keep the case in the spotlight.

“We won’t forget, and we won’t stop. But we need your help to keep this case from fading into silence,” he added.

The case remains unresolved, casting a shadow over Ghana’s criminal justice system and highlighting the frustrations of victims’ families in high-profile murder investigations.

Josephine’s widower, Franklin Kwame Asante, also voiced deep anguish over the Attorney-General’s advice and questioned why key evidence — including a video confession from the prime suspect — was disregarded.

“The person confessed. He’s on video. Now you turn around and say there was no witness? When people commit murder, do they bring spectators?” he asked.

Despite his heartbreak, he vowed to fight on: “We’re down, but we’re not finished. We’ll take it up again and find out if there is truly justice in this country.”

House help arraigned over alleged GH¢80,000 fraud https://www.adomonline.com/house-help-arraigned-over-alleged-gh%c2%a280000-fraud/ Mon, 21 Jul 2025 06:25:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2557724 The Amasaman Circuit Court has granted a GH¢100,000 bail with two sureties to a 53-year-old house help, Faustina Boatemaa, who is facing charges of defrauding a businessman of GH¢80,000 under the pretext of selling land.

Boatemaa pleaded not guilty to conspiring with one Patrick Darko, currently at large, to defraud Mr. Samuel Tweneboah. The alleged deal involved the sale of a 0.12-acre parcel of land with an uncompleted church structure.

Presiding judge, Justice Enid Sarful-Sau—a High Court Judge sitting with additional responsibility at the Circuit Court—ordered Boatemaa to reappear on August 7, 2025.

Presenting the facts, Police Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah told the court that Mr. Tweneboah, a businessman residing at Satellite in Accra, was introduced to the land offer in September 2023 by his sister, Lydia Tweneboah, who had been approached by Boatemaa.

According to the prosecution, Boatemaa told Lydia that her brother, Patrick Darko, who was in South Africa, owned the land and was selling it. Boatemaa subsequently led Lydia and the complainant to inspect the land and the structure at Satellite.

Following negotiations, the complainant agreed to pay GH¢80,000 for the property. An initial part payment of GH¢40,000 was made. Later, on September 15, 2023, GH¢20,000 was transferred into a bank account provided by Darko. Another GH¢20,000 was sent on October 2, 2023, to a different account given by the same individual—completing the GH¢80,000 payment.

Boatemaa later issued a land indenture to Mr. Tweneboah, which turned out to be fake, the prosecution noted.

In December 2023, the complainant deposited 1,000 cement blocks on the land in preparation for development. However, a voice message from Darko, relayed through the complainant’s father-in-law, instructed him to vacate the property.

During a follow-up visit to the land that same month, the complainant discovered an inscription on the uncompleted structure reading: “Property of Marbel family, Stay off.”

After repeated failed attempts to reach Boatemaa and Darko, Mr. Tweneboah reported the matter to the Adjen Kotoku Police, leading to Boatemaa’s arrest.

During police interrogation, Boatemaa admitted to showing the land to the complainant and receiving GH¢40,000 as part payment. She was subsequently charged and arraigned after investigations.

The police are now seeking a court order to compel the banks that received the payments to release photographs and details of the account holders to aid in ongoing investigations.

The Upper West Regional Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted a large cache of chemical substances suspected to be sodium cyanide along the banks of the Black Volta River.

A total of 250 drums containing the suspected chemicals were discovered at Zikpiri, where they had been stockpiled near the river and were reportedly ready to be transported to neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The consignment was uncovered by a team of GIS officers from the Nadowli District Command during a patrol operation along unapproved border routes in the area.

Press release

In a statement issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the GIS, the drums have since been moved to the Nadowli Police Station for safekeeping and further examination by the appropriate authorities.

The statement added that the Command has activated its intelligence network to identify and apprehend those behind the illicit operation.

The interception reportedly took place on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at approximately 1:45 p.m.

The statement also noted that since taking office, the Upper West Regional Commander of GIS, Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Justice Bosomtwi-Ayensu, has instituted a 24-hour manning system at all known unapproved border routes in the region, alongside routine patrols to combat cross-border criminal activities.

Warning

The GIS has issued a strong warning to individuals engaged in illegal cross-border dealings, stressing that it remains committed to cracking down on such activities.

“We caution the general public to desist from any form of cross-border crime. The few recalcitrant persons whose livelihood depends on illegal activities along our territorial borders must either stop or be stopped. There are no ‘ifs’ or ‘buts,” the statement warned.

According to deep-throat sources within the national security apparatus, Asante—popularly known as Swanzy and also referred to as Nana Kwasi among his close associates—was arrested at a hideout in Barekese, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region on the evening of Friday, July 18, 2025.

His arrest is in connection with a viral video in which he allegedly issued threats ahead of the upcoming Akwatia Parliamentary By-election. In the video, Swanzy, clad in military camouflage, vowed that he and his associates would “strike,” warning that at least one prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be killed during the polls.

He claimed the threats were in retaliation for what he described as the party’s abandonment of Delta Force members after they were used to help secure victory in the 2016 elections.

Security officials have described the arrest as a preventive measure to safeguard lives and property before, during, and after the by-election.

As of 10:00 p.m. on Friday, arrangements were underway to transfer Swanzy to Accra for court processing.

The convict, Francis Ammisah, allegedly lured the minor with Coca-Cola. After the act, Ammisah gave the victim GH¢2 and threatened her not to tell anyone.

The convict pleaded not guilty to the charge of defilement when he first appeared in court in 2023 but was found guilty by the court, presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit.

Facts of the case

According to the facts presented to the court by Chief Inspector (C/Insp) Christopher Wonder, the victim would typically spend weekends with the complainant at Lapaz.

On 28 October 2023, the victim woke up weak in the morning and was struggling to sit up. “The complainant questioned the victim about what was wrong with her, and the victim revealed that Ammisah had been regularly taking her to a location at Mataheko in his red car, where he would mix a white substance into a bottle of Coke and give it to her to drink before having sex with her,” the prosecutor told the court.

“The convict, after the act, would give her GH¢2.00 and threaten that she would die if she told anyone,” C/Insp Wonder added.

The prosecutor explained that a complaint was lodged with the Odorkor Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, leading to the convict’s arrest. During interrogation, Ammisah denied having sexual intercourse with the victim.

A police medical form was issued for the victim to be examined, and a medical report was subsequently issued and duly endorsed by a doctor. Following investigations, the accused was charged with the offence and brought before the court.

Bailiff jailed for forging judge’s signature https://www.adomonline.com/bailiff-jailed-for-forging-judges-signature/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 22:20:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554677 A 38-year-old bailiff, Kojo Budu Jackson, has been sentenced to four years in prison with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court for attempting to commit fraud with forged court documents bearing the signature of a retired judge.

Jackson was found to have falsified a district court order and a certificate of divorce supposedly issued by a former magistrate of the Ejisu District Court in the Ashanti Region.

Initially, Jackson pleaded not guilty to the charge of forging a judicial service document. However, at last Tuesday’s hearing, he changed his plea to guilty just as the prosecution was about to start presenting its case, leading to his conviction.

Alongside the custodial sentence, the court imposed a fine of 200 penalty units, equivalent to GH₵2,400. Failure to pay the fine within one month of sentencing would result in an additional year of imprisonment.

Case background

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye, the case began in June 2024 when the Judicial Secretary lodged a complaint with the Ghana Police Service, reporting that Jackson and some accomplices were forging official court documents, including marriage and divorce certificates and court orders.

At that time, Jackson was employed as a private bailiff at the Ejisu District Court in the Ashanti Region.

Following the complaint, police placed Jackson under surveillance and arrested him on August 13, 2024. A search of his residence uncovered various documents, including divorce affidavits and a forged Certificate of Divorce.

During interrogation, Jackson confessed, explaining that he committed the act because he was struggling financially and needed to pay his rent.

Further investigation confirmed that the forged divorce certificate, dated May 8, 2024, was made to appear as if issued by the retired Ejisu magistrate.

Police established that Jackson had scanned the judge’s signature, digitally inserted it into the document and affixed the registrar’s official stamp.

The investigations also showed that other documents discovered in Jackson’s possession were similarly forged.

Why judge decided to separate twins sentenced for stealing motorbike https://www.adomonline.com/why-judge-decided-to-separate-twins-sentenced-for-stealing-motorbike/ Sat, 12 Jul 2025 12:41:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554594 The Bibiani District Court has sentenced identical twins to 48 months’ imprisonment each for dishonestly appropriating an unregistered motorbike valued at GH¢13,000.

The convicted persons, Seth Frimpong, alias Atta Payin, a welder, and Emmanuel Frimpong, alias Atta Kakra, an excavator operator, stole the motorbike on 16 June 2025 at Adiembra near Chirano in the Western North Region.

Charged with conspiracy to commit crime and stealing, they pleaded guilty with an explanation and asked for leniency, citing a partial refund of GH¢3,440 and lack of support.

Presiding Judge Mr. Lord Delvin Essandoh imposed enhanced sentences of 48 months each on both charges, to run concurrently.

In a unique ruling, the judge ordered that the twins serve their sentences separately—Seth at Obuasi Prison and Emmanuel at Kumasi Central Prison—stating they would not be rewarded with the company of each other during their term of reformation.

“Historically, with respect to twins, Romulus and Remus were twins known for the founding of the City of Rome and, by extension, the Roman Kingdom, albeit marred by the slaying of Remus by Romulus.

“Here before this court are identical twins who have chosen to be known by their criminal deeds…. This court would have preferred that even though they came into this world together, it does not mean they had to fulfil the same destiny and engage in criminality together,” he said.

The court also ordered the release of the recovered motorbike to the complainant, Daniel Fosu.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector B.O. Agyemang, the incident occurred after Mr. Fosu parked his unregistered Haojin motorbike at home on the night of June 15, 2025.

He discovered it was missing at around 0400 hours the following morning.

A witness, Samuel Akurugu Manzan, was seen leaving the area on a tricycle and was apprehended by residents.

He later told police the twins had hired him under the pretext of visiting relatives but instead stole the motorbike.

Investigations led police to a mechanic in Bibiabi, where the motorbike was eventually recovered on 30 June 2025, verified by matching chassis numbers.

On 4 July 2025, the twins were arrested at the Kwamekrom Police Checkpoint aboard a Kumasi–Diaso-bound vehicle.

During interrogation, they admitted to the offence, with Emmanuel confessing to riding the motorbike to Bibiani and handing it over to a man named Chairman at Lineso to sell.

The bike was sold for GH¢4,000, and the proceeds were given to the accused.

Police records also revealed the twins are repeat offenders, with previous sentences of 24 and 3 months, including one incident of escape from police custody.

Man allegedly kills daughter, injures son and commits suicide at Kato https://www.adomonline.com/man-allegedly-kills-daughter-injures-son-and-commits-suicide-at-kato/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 20:02:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553444 Residents of Kato near Berekum in the Bono Region have been plunged into grief and disbelief following a tragic incident in which a father fatally shot his daughter, injured his son, and subsequently took his own life.

The deceased, identified as Kwasi Gabriel, believed to be in his late 40s, reportedly shot and killed his 11-year-old daughter, Olivia Faakyewaa, and injured his 14-year-old son, Daniel Agyei, before committing suicide. The heartbreaking event occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, July 8, 2025.

While the exact motive behind the act remains unclear, some residents who spoke to Adom News linked the incident to long-standing marital issues.

Preliminary police investigations suggest that Gabriel had been embroiled in a protracted marital dispute with his estranged wife, Sarah Yeboa, who currently lives in Dormaa Ahenkuro. Family sources revealed that the children had been living with their mother until two weeks ago, when Gabriel reportedly took custody under the pretense of enrolling them in a school in Berekum.

A chilling detail emerged that Gabriel allegedly instructed his son, Daniel, to write a letter to their mother, informing her of his decision to relocate the children to an undisclosed location. However, Daniel reportedly defied his father’s instructions.

Gabriel’s mother, Abena Mansah, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, revealing that both families were actively working to resolve the marital tensions before the horrific turn of events.

The Assembly Member for Kato Electoral Area, Ofori Darkwa, confirmed that police officers visited the scene and conveyed the bodies to the mortuary.

The remains of Kwasi Gabriel and Olivia Faakyewaa have been deposited at the Holy Family Hospital Morgue, while Daniel is currently receiving medical treatment for gunshot wounds.

The devastating incident has left the Kato community in mourning, with many struggling to come to terms with the senseless loss of life.

Police authorities have launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

Cyber Security Authority busts fraud syndicate in Dodowa https://www.adomonline.com/cyber-security-authority-busts-fraud-syndicate-in-dodowa/ Tue, 08 Jul 2025 09:29:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552582 The Cyber Security Authority (CSA), in a coordinated multi-agency operation with the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Police Cybercrime Unit, has dismantled a sophisticated cyber fraud syndicate operating from Sasaabi, a community along the Dodowa road in the Greater Accra Region.

The raid, carried out on Thursday, July 3, 2025, involved a 12-member tactical police team led jointly by the Director of Operations of the Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service and some senior CSA officials.

The operation resulted in the arrest of 25 Nigerian nationals, all suspected of involvement in large-scale cybercrime activities.

The joint operation team confiscated over 40 laptops and 25 mobile phones, believed to have been used in orchestrating financial fraud schemes targeting victims both in Ghana and abroad.

The operation was triggered by a distress report received by the Computer Emergency Response Team – Ghana (CERT-GH) from a Nigerian national who claimed he was being held against his will and coerced into engaging in cyber fraud.

The whistleblower provided his mother’s contact in Nigeria, through which his identity was confirmed. Subsequent checks by the CSA’s Law Enforcement Liaison Unit revealed that the individual had been officially declared missing in Nigeria. He alleged that about 20 other individuals were similarly being exploited, prompting urgent cross-border intelligence coordination.

Cyber Security Authority cracks down on cybercrime

“This operation underscores Ghana’s zero-tolerance policy on transnational cybercrime and our firm resolve to protect individuals, both Ghanaians and foreign nationals, who criminal enterprises exploit,” an official at the CSA said on condition of anonymity.

The arrested individuals are currently in police custody as authorities carry out further interrogations and digital forensics on the seized equipment. Investigators are also probing for potential links to larger international cybercrime syndicates.

Man, 21, arrested in connection with killing of queen mother at Gbawe https://www.adomonline.com/man-21-arrested-in-connection-with-killing-of-queen-mother-at-gbawe/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 19:48:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552383

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man in connection with the shooting and killing of a queen mother during a naming ceremony at Gbawe Zero, a suburb of Accra, on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

The deceased, 33-year-old Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker, known in private life as Naa Agyinafo I of Papase, died instantly after being shot at close range.

Another woman, 38-year-old Priscilla Na Ayele, sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and is receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre. She is reported to be in stable condition.

At a press briefing in Accra on Monday, July 7, the police identified the suspect as Gilbert Awuni Alia, alias “Starboy”, an okada rider from Dentsua.

He was arrested at Asokore in the Ashanti Region, where he had fled after the incident. The police say he was part of a group that fired weapons indiscriminately during the ceremony.

The naming event was organised by Ibrahim Ni Ayikwashi Solomon, also known as Nii Ayi Solomon, who had earlier reported the incident to the police.

He has since been arrested after admitting to authorising the use of firearms at the event, which was attended by traditional leaders and members of various Asafu groups.

Investigators suspect that the violence was triggered by the consumption of Sobo, a locally brewed drink, which may have been laced with narcotic substances. During interrogation, Starboy reportedly confessed to firing a weapon while under the influence of alcohol.

He claimed to have fled the scene with an accomplice known only as “Oxygen”. Police say the suspect told them he discarded the firearm, and efforts are underway to retrieve it.

A second accomplice has also been arrested. Officers have retrieved a locally manufactured weapon, along with spent cartridges and gunpowder, as part of their ongoing investigations.

The police condemned the unauthorised use of firearms at public events, warning that anyone found culpable will face prosecution. “Possession and discharge of firearms without lawful authority is a serious offence,” the command stated.

Police probe killing of Bimbilla SHS student during fire festival https://www.adomonline.com/police-probe-killing-of-bimbilla-shs-student-during-fire-festival/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 07:32:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552011 Police in the Northern Region have launched investigations into the tragic killing of Fatima Abukari, an 18-year-old student of Bimbilla Senior High School.

She was shot during the Fire Festival celebrations in Bimbilla, Nanumba North Municipality, on Saturday, July 5.

Fatima was struck by a stray bullet while patrons of the festival were marching in a torchlit procession toward the Wampu Dam. She has since been buried in accordance with Islamic customs.

According to Chief Inspector Lukman Neindoo, the Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, officers visited the crime scene on the morning of July 6 to gather evidence. BB cartridges were recovered at the scene, but no arrests have been made so far.

Chief Inspector Neindoo cautioned the public against the possession and use of unlicensed firearms. He stressed that the ban on Fire Festival celebrations in certain areas was not arbitrary.

“It is not for nothing that the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, banned the celebrations in the Tamale Metropolis and Sagnarigu Municipality,” he stated. “No one has the right to carry an assault rifle unless it is licensed for a lawful purpose.”

Police say a press conference will be held soon to provide updates on the incident and other security issues in the region, including the recent killing of a youth group member in Tamale.

The Fire Festival had been partially banned in parts of the Northern Region due to heightened security concerns. Despite the restrictions, celebrations continued in some communities, including Bimbilla, where the tragic incident occurred.

Police secure warrant to arrest suspects in Attakrom-Amanfro fatal shooting https://www.adomonline.com/police-secure-warrant-to-arrest-suspects-in-attakrom-amanfro-fatal-shooting/ Sat, 05 Jul 2025 10:27:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551748 The Eastern South Regional Police Command has secured an arrest warrant for suspects involved in the fatal shooting of Daniel Amekudzi, which occurred during a funeral procession at Attakrom-Amanfro near Nsawam on Friday, June 27, 2025.

The warrant, issued by the Nsawam Circuit Court on July 3, targets Francis Sakyi, also known as Nana Kofi Akotua, along with two unidentified accomplices who are currently at large.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the incident occurred during a convoy transporting a body from Nsawam to Aburi, with mourners engaging in customary musketry as part of the procession.

Upon reaching Attakrom-Amanfro, a misunderstanding reportedly erupted between the mourners and some local youth, escalating into a violent confrontation. The altercation tragically resulted in the shooting and death of Daniel Amekudzi, a resident of the town.

Police intelligence suggests that Francis Sakyi and the two accomplices may be hiding in Aburi, Mempeasem, or Kitasi.

The Eastern South Regional Police Command is appealing to the public for assistance in locating the suspects.

“We urge anyone with relevant information that could lead to the arrest of suspect Francis Sakyi, alias Nana Kofi Akotuah, and the two others, to report to the nearest police station or contact the Police Command Centre on 191, 112, or 18555 (MTN),” stated ASP Foster Owusu of the Public Affairs Unit, Eastern South Region, in a statement on July 4.

The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice for the late Daniel Amekudzi and his family. It also called for calm among the bereaved family, the youth of Attakrom-Amanfro, and the general public as investigations continue.

This incident underscores the risks associated with public gatherings—especially those involving traditional practices that include the use of firearms—if not properly regulated and managed.

The swift move by the police to obtain an arrest warrant reflects their determination to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further unrest.

A statement issued by his lawyer, Gideon Tettey Tetteh, stated that Mr. Moore has not received any payment of $800,000 from Mr. Kang, dismissing the claims as falsehoods.

“Allegations that Mr. Moore solicited funds from Mr. Kang for political purposes, particularly in connection with the 2024 NDC campaign, are patently false.

“Fundraising efforts for the campaign were conducted transparently by the ‘Monitor and Win’ committee to boost grassroots participation and reward hardworking party members,” the statement said.

It added that the former Adentan MP is, in fact, a victim of a massive fraud allegedly perpetrated by Mr. Kang, who has been on remand for the past five weeks.

According to the statement, Ashie Moore and his business partners filed a complaint with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, accusing Mr. Kang of defrauding them of about $3 million under false pretences.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is also reportedly investigating separate claims that Mr. Kang stole an additional $2.8 million from the group.

The statement further denied allegations that Mr. Moore extorted money, seized Mr. Kang’s passport, or assaulted him—describing such claims as baseless and defamatory.

Meanwhile, Mr. Moore’s legal team has petitioned the Attorney General to take over the case, citing the magnitude of the matter as beyond the remit of the police.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: 1st July 2025
Accra – Ghana

RE: RESPONSE TO PROF. KWEKU AZAR ALLEGATIONS AGAINST MR. EMMANUEL NII ASHIE MOORE — CALL FOR CALM AND RESPECT FOR LEGAL PROCESS.

The attention of Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and his legal team has been drawn to a series of unfounded allegations circulating in sections of the media and public discourse, purporting to suggest misconduct, extortion, political abuse of state institutions, and human rights violations in connection with an ongoing criminal matter involving Mr. Toh You Kang, a Singaporean national.

We wish to unequivocally state the following:

1. Background to the Matter.- RCID/AR CASE R/O NO: 222/2025

In May 2025, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore lodged a formal complaint with the Greater Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service against Mr. Toh You Kang, citing defrauding by false pretence. Following preliminary investigations, Mr. Kang was remanded in lawful custody and has remained on remand for the past five weeks.

Subsequently, a related complaint of stealing was filed with the Economic and Commercial Crime Office. Owing to the complexity and magnitude of the alleged fraud totaling over USD 5.8 million both dockets were recommended for consolidation and referred to the Attorney General’s Department for legal advice and prosecutorial determination.

This process was carried out in accordance with the laws of Ghana, devoid of interference or political influence.

2. Response to Key Allegations

a. No Receipt of USD 800,000 for ECG Contracts:
Mr. Moore never received $800,000 from Mr. Toh You Kang for purposes of securing contracts from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Rather, Mr. Kang misrepresented himself as a legitimate investor and defrauded Mr. Moore and his business partners.

b. No Coercion for Political Contributions:
Allegations that Mr. Moore solicited funds from Mr. Kang for political purposes, particularly in connection with the 2024 NDC campaign, are patently false. Fundraising efforts for the campaign were conducted transparently by ‘Monitor and Win’ committee to boost grassroots participation and reward hardworking party members.

c. No False Invitation or Assault:
Mr. Kang is a regular visitor to Ghana and was lawfully arrested based on the criminal complaint. There is no evidence of assault, extortion, or coercion during or after his arrest.

d. Legal Representation and Human Rights:
At all times, Mr. Kang has had access to multiple lawyers, has not been denied communication with family(and with his Mobile phone whilst in Police custody), and has been treated in full compliance with Ghanaian law and human rights standards.

e. False Image Circulation Claims:
Accusations that Mr. Moore circulated semi-nude images of Mr. Kang to extort his family are entirely false, malicious, and defamatory. Mr. Kang has been in lawful police custody throughout.

3. Institutional Integrity and the Rule of Law

As a senior political figure and respected entrepreneur, Mr. Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore has demonstrated unwavering trust in Ghana’s legal institutions by submitting himself to due process and refraining from any self-help or political manipulation. He believes firmly that justice must be served through independent, lawful, and transparent mechanisms.

Ghana’s law enforcement agencies, including the Police and the Economic and Commercial Crime Office(CID), have handled this matter with professionalism, neutrality, and respect for legal thresholds. The Attorney General’s Department, the constitutionally mandated authority, now has carriage of the matter, and we await their considered advice and direction.

4. Political Neutrality and Investment Climate

Mr. Moore(a successful entrepreneur and politician)remains committed to safeguarding Ghana’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for genuine foreign investment. However, our institutions must not be used as sanctuaries for individuals who exploit diplomatic, commercial, or political goodwill to perpetrate financial crimes.

Allegations of political interference or state abuse serve only to undermine public confidence in our democracy and institutions, and we urge the public to treat such narratives with the skepticism they deserve.

5. Call for Calm and Due Process

No individual is above the law, and equally, no individual should be vilified or defamed without evidence. The matter involving Mr. Toh You Kang is now within the lawful domain of the Attorney General’s Department, and we call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to respect the process and refrain from politicizing what is clearly a commercial and criminal dispute.

6. Conclusion

We reiterate that, in Ghana, no individual is above the law, nor is any person beneath its protection. As officers of the court and custodians of our democracy, we urge the public and the media to uphold the sanctity of due process, resist sensationalism, and allow justice to take its natural course.

Let truth prevail, and let the institutions of our Republic function without interference or distortion. We remain confident that justice will be served.

The violence erupted on Thursday, June 26, when two female day students were struck by gunfire while en route to school.

Their injuries highlighted the escalating tensions in the area, prompting immediate concern from local authorities.

The situation worsened the following day, Friday, June 27, when a male student was killed by a stray bullet while seated in his classroom during mock examinations.

This incident not only claimed a young life but also sent shockwaves throughout the community and raised alarming questions about safety in educational environments.

In response to the escalating violence, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken swift action by ordering the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School, located in the Oti Region, to protect students and staff from further harm.

Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, the Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Regional Police Command, provided an update on the security situation.

He confirmed that a comprehensive security strategy has been implemented in Nkwanta and its surrounding areas to restore peace and ensure the safety of residents.

“As I am talking, calm has been restored in Nkwanta following the recent violent incident. Swift and decisive actions have been taken to maintain law and order,” DSP Nchor stated, reassuring the community of their safety.

The police’s proactive measures include increasing patrols and establishing checkpoints throughout the region to deter any further violence and ensure a secure environment for residents.

This tragic series of events has raised serious concerns about community safety and the impact of tribal tensions on the lives of young students. Local leaders and community members are calling for dialogue and reconciliation to prevent future incidents and foster a peaceful coexistence among all groups in the region.

As investigations continue, the community remains on high alert, hoping for a swift return to normalcy and safety in their daily lives.

Farmer punished for stealing assorted items from student https://www.adomonline.com/farmer-punished-for-stealing-assorted-items-from-student/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 09:11:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548958 The Enchi District Magistrate Court in the Western North Region has fined Christopher Kaidabi, a 29-year-old farmer, GH¢3,000 for stealing assorted items valued at GH¢1,595 from a student.

Kaidabi, popularly known as Kwabena, pleaded guilty to unlawful entry and theft.

He was fined GH¢3,000 on each count, but the sentences will run concurrently.

The court, presided over by Mr. Lawrence Buanor-Buer, also ordered the accused to pay GH¢3,000 as compensation to the complainant.

The magistrate further directed that both the fine and compensation be paid simultaneously or, in default, the accused will serve 24 months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Prosecuting, General Sergeant Stephen Offei Asante told the court that the complainant resides at SK, while Kaidabi lives in a cottage nearby, both located close to Mumuni Camp in the Western Region.

On Sunday, May 11, 2025, at about 9:00 a.m., the complainant left home for the farm but forgot to lock his door.

Upon returning around 12:00 noon, he discovered that several personal items had been stolen. These included his school bag, six shirts, two pairs of trousers, two pairs of sneakers, a belt, three exercise books, and English, Mathematics, and Integrated Science textbooks — all valued at GH¢1,595.

General Sergeant Asante said the complainant suspected Kaidabi due to his known history of theft in the community. When first confronted, the accused denied any involvement.

However, on May 12, 2025, the complainant and his father encountered Kaidabi on their way to Mumuni Camp and confronted him again. This time, he admitted to the crime.

He was escorted to Moses Kwaku Bronya, the Gravel Yard Neighbourhood Watch Committee chairman, who then handed him over to the police at Samreboi for investigation.

In his caution statement, Kaidabi claimed he had sold the shirts and trousers for GH¢300 to a man named Kwabena at Domeabra, near Mumuni Camp, but failed to assist police in locating him.

He also alleged he left the stolen books in his room, but a search conducted there revealed nothing.

Two arrested over murder of former Dampong SHS headmaster https://www.adomonline.com/two-arrested-over-murder-of-former-dampong-shs-headmaster/ Fri, 27 Jun 2025 08:54:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548946 The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has arrested two people in connection with the murder of a former Headmaster of Dampong Senior High School (SHS), Eric Obeng Darko.

The suspects, Mohammed Mubarak, aged 38, and Elizabeth Darkwah, also aged 38, were arrested on June 9 and 17, respectively.

They were subsequently arraigned before the Kodie and Suame District Courts, remanded into police custody, and are expected to reappear in court on July 4, 2025.

In a statement, the Police said preliminary investigations revealed that in 2024, Elizabeth allegedly defrauded the deceased by collecting an unspecified amount of money under the pretext of helping him unearth ancient family gold.

As part of the scheme, she reportedly visited the victim’s residence at Bampenase near Mamponteng at night with Mubarak. Together, they dug up 20 pieces of a yellowish substance, claiming it was gold that needed to be purified at her church before it could be used or sold.

However, she later avoided all attempts by the deceased to arrange the so-called purification.

She then allegedly conspired with Mubarak and three other suspects currently on the run to abduct and murder the victim before he could visit the church.

Mr. Darko was taken to Aboabugya, and when he attempted to escape, he was deliberately knocked down and run over by a Honda Odyssey vehicle driven by Mubarak, resulting in his death.

Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices.

Court fines two fishmongers for receiving stolen tilapia https://www.adomonline.com/court-fines-two-fishmongers-for-receiving-stolen-tilapia/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 09:27:49 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548484 The Amasaman Circuit Court has fined two fishmongers, Lady Ayawah and Faustina Kattah, 100 penalty units each, equivalent to GH¢1,200, for dishonestly receiving stolen tilapia valued at GH¢100,000.

The two women pleaded guilty and were convicted on their own plea. Their respective lawyers pleaded for mitigation before the court handed down the fines.

The court was presided over by Justice Enid Marful-Sau, a High Court Judge with additional responsibilities at the Circuit Court.

Felix Banini, a fisherman alleged to have stolen the fish, is currently on the run, and a bench warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Presenting the case, Police Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah told the court that the complainant, Mr. Joseph Alobuia, is a commercial tilapia farmer with fish cages located on a section of the Densu River at Joma in the Ga Central Municipality.

Banini, along with Ayawah and Kattah, are residents of Ablekuma-Agape Down and are known in the area as fishermen and fishmongers.

According to Chief Inspector Awuah-Ansah, on May 25, 2025, at around 1:00 a.m., Banini took his canoe to the Densu River at Joma and stole a quantity of fish from Mr. Alobuia’s cages.

The next day, Mr. Alobuia discovered the theft and estimated the value of the stolen tilapia at GH¢100,000. He returned home and began a search for the culprits.

During his search, he identified some of his stolen tilapia in the possession of Lady Ayawah and confronted her.

The prosecution said, “In the process, Lady Ayawah mentioned Banini as the person who sold the fish to her the previous night.”

On June 2, 2025, with the help of other fishermen in Agape Down, Mr. Alobuia apprehended Banini and handed him over to the police.

Banini admitted to the theft in his caution statement, revealing that he sold GH¢850 worth of tilapia to Lady Ayawah and GH¢1,200 worth to Faustina Kattah.

Both Ayawah and Kattah admitted the offence during police investigations and were subsequently charged and arraigned before the court.

Banini, however, failed to appear in court and is currently being sought by the police, the prosecution said.

Five remanded over GH¢2.3m and $191,900 fake notes https://www.adomonline.com/five-remanded-over-gh%c2%a22-3m-and-191900-fake-notes/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 07:10:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547552 Five people have been arrested in connection with the printing of fake GH¢200 and $100 notes, totalling GH¢2.3 million and $191,900, respectively.

The accused, who appeared before an Accra Circuit Court on Friday, are Shubham Sharma (General Manager); James Mozu Bonaparte (graphic designer); Prince Owusu Ahenkorah (photographer/video director); Jonathan Kwame Appiah and Solomon Adjetey Adjei (both graphic designers).

The five were jointly charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and were arrested at various locations in Accra.

Sharma, Bonaparte, and Ahenkorah are facing an additional charge of possession of forged notes, while Appiah and Adjei are charged with uttering forged notes.

The court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, did not take their pleas and remanded them into lawful custody to reappear on July 3, 2025.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu, requested that the accused be remanded pending further investigations.

Sources say the complainant is an Accra-based businessman (name withheld). The accused persons were picked up following intelligence received on June 16, 2025.

Sharma, the first accused, is alleged to have stolen $230,000 from the businessman’s bedroom safe after embezzling company funds. He allegedly replaced the stolen amount with counterfeit Ghana cedis and US dollars.

A search at the cash office of the company, located at Adabraka Industrial Area, uncovered fake GH¢200 notes totalling GH¢2,318,000 and $100 notes amounting to $191,900. Sharma is reported to have admitted that he kept the fake notes in the office.

Police investigations further revealed that Sharma paid Bonaparte GH¢25,000 for the counterfeit Ghana cedis and GH¢15,000 for the fake dollars. Bonaparte and Ahenkorah are said to have conspired to supply Sharma with the fake currency.

During a search, security personnel retrieved five bundles of fake GH¢200 notes from Ahenkorah. He later mentioned Appiah as his accomplice, stating that Appiah, who manages the printing press, supervised the printing of the fake currency.

Appiah subsequently led the police to arrest Adjei, who is alleged to have handed over the fake notes to Ahenkorah.
