The miners, angered by the seizure and immobilisation of their excavator, have reportedly been staging protests and issuing threats at the forest office, disrupting its operations since the incident occurred.

According to officials, the latest confrontation took place on Wednesday during a meeting between the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tarkwa Nsuaem, Ebenezer Cobbinah, and the District Manager.

“Minutes after he entered and the discussion was ongoing, some of the people came to the office premises wielding knives, threatened again to burn our vehicles, and in the process, cut the tyres of the District Manager’s personal vehicle with a knife. The MCE stopped them from further destruction and took them away,” one official recounted.

A situational report filed by the Forest Office detailed that on Monday, June 2, 2025, around 10:30 am, the office received intelligence about an excavator unlawfully operating in the Neung South Forest Reserve. A Rapid Response Team was dispatched, and the Regional Manager was informed. A backup team was later deployed to immobilise the excavator.

Following the operation, a group led by one Ruben Agbokah, alongside a woman alleged to be the Women’s Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), stormed the Tarkwa Forest District Office. The group reportedly forced staff out of the premises and locked the office.

“Some staff members were hit in the chest during the altercation. It took the intervention of the Regional Crime Officer and his men to retrieve the keys. They also threatened to burn the office and personal vehicles,” officials said, adding that the office vehicles are now being kept at the police station for safety.

The protesters reportedly returned the next day and have since continued to disrupt office activities, making it impossible for staff to carry out any meaningful duties since Monday.

The District Manager and one Assistant District Manager are said to be the primary targets of the attacks, as the illegal miners believe they ordered the immobilisation of the excavator.

The Neung South Forest Reserve, along with other forest zones in the area, has been under persistent threat from illegal mining activities.

36 years in prison for a mistake at 17: The forgotten story of once-promising goalkeeper Akwasi Alhassan https://www.adomonline.com/36-years-in-prison-for-a-mistake-at-17-the-forgotten-story-of-once-promising-goalkeeper-akwasi-alhassan/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 12:06:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542028 “Pray for me,” says Akwasi Alhassan, handing over a photograph of himself.

To his left is the late Christian Atsu—a man whose life was larger than life itself. He touched lives silently, and the image presented to me, coincidentally, was from one of those days he visited the Nsawam Medium Security Prison to touch lives.

Behind them were other inmates called to duty to officiate the usual matches played by inmates. It was a moment for Alhassan to reload his early years of brilliance as goalkeeper.

Here, they have coaches, referees, and commentators who are all inmates. Matches like that, though brief give them a window, it’s cherished.

I had never been here before. But my name and image rang in the minds of some occupants of this facility. Before Alhassan came, others had screamed my name from afar. One would later send me and email introducing himself.

Alhassan’s gesture, though, was unexpected as stretched out my hand for a handshake, introducing myself.

“I know you,” he said, leaning closer for a hug. He wore a blue shirt, with a star on the upper left chest—where our hearts are believed to be.

This heart was heavy, filled with regret for a mistake he made in his teens. The star up there is not the praise you get for your talent. In this God-forsaken space, it is a rank you attain after years of incarceration, per a prison officer. A star rank.

Born a star per his talent and the testimonies of his playmates, but, unfortunately, he wears a star of pain and sorrow in this enclosed, dishevelled environment.

Akwasi Alhassan is not a name that resonates with about 57% of Ghana’s recent population.

“This place has been my home for 36 years,” he says.

Born in Kwesimintsim, a suburb of Takoradi, he was a budding talent with dreams. Dreams of representing Ghana on the green fields and under floodlights of the biggest stadia and football competitions in the world—but his life has been spent behind iron bars before 57% of the country’s population was born.

To put this into context, Alhassan has been here for more than half of Ghana’s age. Yes, Ghana turned 68 in March, and for 36 of those years, the cage has been his home.

Now you understand why about 57% of Ghanaians probably never heard his name. There is no guarantee Alhassan would have become a great footballer or offered much to his country to be widely known, but there’s also no denying the fact that he may have been one of the biggest assets Ghana never had.

“Alhassan was a very good goalkeeper. Extremely good,” former Black Stars striker and his one-time teammate, Augustine Ahinful says.

Augustine Ahinful (right) was a playmate of Akwasi Alhassan

“There was no goalkeeper in the country who could match him at the time,” Yaw Preko, a brilliant footballer down the flank in his hey days, now coach testifies.

This conversation, which happened near a tent at a distance from other inmates—dedicated for condemned prisoners—became a memory recollection centre of what could have been.

Many of the former Black Stars players, who had loud cheers from inmates, knew him.

Samuel Osei Kuffour had the loudest cheers. He hugged them, had tête-à-têtes with them, and shared words of encouragement.

“We are here to support you. We haven’t forgotten about you because you are here. You are one of us.”

Sammy Kuffour broke down while talking about meeting people he knows in the prison

Alhassan stood there, watching on. Maybe, in his mind: “This could have been me being cheered for making Ghana’s national teams great, but my dreams were cut short by teenage emotions. Now, I am the one being encouraged.”

From the crowd, he descended to join Ahinful and I to hand me that photograph.

He stood quietly for a moment, his eyes watery. It’s hard to believe he still has water in his eyes. These are tears he’s shared for over three and a half decades.

When he eventually uttered his words, his voice was heavy.

“I had a fight with a friend,” he recalled. “It was in 1989. I was part of the first under-17 team that was being put together in 1988. But unfortunately, my life ended here.”

His voice trembled. Tears welled up in his eyes. He reached for his face towel.

“When we had the fight, I had a key and I used it on him. Unfortunately, he died when he was rushed to the hospital. I was on remand for four years before I was sentenced in 1993.”

“This has been my home for 36 years,” he said. “Please help me.”

Inmates came out to watch a football match

For 36 years, the only world he’s known is the Nsawam Prison. He was a boy. A teenager. His brain still developing. He made the worst mistake of his life in a fight—one any young, hot-blooded boy could have found himself in.

“I don’t even know how my house looks like,” he said, looking down, visibly broken.

Augustine Ahinful shook his head.

“Alhassan hasn’t been fortunate,” he said.

Many of us would recall in the latter days of the Akufo-Addo government, a letter leaked alleging presidential pardon for inmates. The first name on that list was Akwasi Alhassan. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death on March 19, 1993.

That letter was never fake. But for whatever reason, it was withdrawn. And Alhassan continues to wallow in this cage.

Presidential pardon letter which was later withdrawnAkwasi Alhassan’s name was first

Ahinful is not wrong when he says Alhassan has not been lucky.

“To be here for 36 years of your life is not easy.”

Indeed, it is not.

Some precious lives that could have contributed to the development of this country are rotting away. Caged and forgotten.

“Some of them are here for minor mistakes any of us could have made,” Deputy Director of Prisons, Patrick Thomas Seidu, says.

“There’s a woman in condemned prison because she was sharing a lovely moment with her husband. They competed for the meat while eating, and she pushed her husband in an attempt to snatch the meat from him. He hit his head on the wall while trying to run away with the meat. She was convicted of murder,” a prison officer says.

He adds: “That boy there,” pointing to the crowd, “is serving 23 years in prison because he was mistaken for a thief. He said they were chasing thieves and he was also running. They caught him, and nothing he said made sense.”

DDP Patrick Thomas Seidu

That boy looked young. Just around the age Alhassan was when brought here.

The stories here are of broken lives, abandoned souls, and dreams buried under years of regret. It is not the steel bars that hurt the most, but the memory of a mistake made as a child.

A mistake he has paid for, every single day, for 36 long years.

He was not a criminal. He was a boy who made a grave mistake. In his own words, he never had the chance to grow into the man he could have been. No chance to right the wrong.

He has spent his entire adult life in a cell.

And yet, he remains kind. Hopeful. Pleading.

“Pray for me,” his parting words. I have resolved to keep this photo with me and take it to every Jummah Prayer and ask my Imam and congregation to pray for him every Friday.

He needs it.

The pain in his voice is not of someone making excuses. It is the pain of a man who has reflected, repented, and regrets.

How does a nation hold a man captive for 36 years for a mistake committed at 17? A mistake he did not set out to commit. One could argue he should have known better.

But he didn’t. He was a child.

Our laws may be blind, but our hearts shouldn’t be.

Justice without mercy is cruelty. Justice without compassion is vengeance.

“Don’t we all deserve a second chance?” Patrick Seidu quizzed. We all do, and many of those here for infringing the law need it.

I saw others. Describing them as talented footballers will be an understatement. One was so good that, Yussif Chibsah, Ghana’s Olympics team captain, gave him money.

Inmate receives prize from Kwame Ayew for winning man of the match

Another was adjudged the best player of the game by the coaches present. It’s hard to tell what brought some of them here, but their talent is noticeable even in cage.

Sammy Kuffour had mixed feelings when he proudly said, “The boy in the number 10 for the blue team is from my place.” I dare say he’s a better footballer than many of those we see on TV here.

These talents have been caged just like that of Alhassan.

36 years. Behind bars. For a teenage fight.

Clad in red bands, the visibly distressed staff marched through the streets of Donkorkrom to protest what they describe as relentless attacks on their colleagues and families.

In a strongly worded petition to the District Police Commander, District Chief Executive, local MPs, chiefs, and other key stakeholders, the health professionals demanded urgent government intervention.

Dr. Isaac Boateng, the Acting Medical Administrator, whose own family recently suffered at the hands of armed robbers, warned of drastic measures.

“If nothing is done by Friday, I will stop work. The entire staff has given the government a two-week ultimatum. We can’t die here in silence,” he told Adom News.

The General Manager of the hospital, Kwaku Fianko Gyan, painted a grim picture, revealing that armed robbery attacks occur nearly three times a week on the Ekye Amanfrom–Donkorkrom road.

“We are under siege. Lives are at risk daily. Government must act now,” he emphasized.

Residents demand return of Anti-Robbery Task Force

Meanwhile, concerned residents of Kwawu Afram Plains have joined the call for improved security, demanding the immediate redeployment of the Anti-Robbery Task Force to combat the escalating crime wave.

They believe the task force’s presence previously kept the area relatively safe, and its return could help restore calm.

The Acting Coordinating Director of the District Assembly confirmed that consultations were ongoing to consider the task force’s return, stressing the Assembly’s zero tolerance for armed robbery.

Divisional Police Commander, ACP Klomegah Christopher, urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is being handled.

He disclosed that four suspects have so far been arrested, and called on all stakeholders to collaborate in restoring peace.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest, prosecution, and conviction of a five-member robbery gang responsible for two major attacks in Accra.

According to a Police statement, the incidents took place at the Jos Bakery Head Office in Dome and at ACP Junction.

The Jos Bakery robbery occurred on May 11, 2025, around 1:25 a.m., when two armed men—Isaac Agbezudor, alias “Money Man,” a 20-year-old mechanic, and Justice Akwasi Sarfo Oppong, alias “Gariba Manta” or “Demon,” a 19-year-old Okada rider—attacked staff members.

Woman who stole church TV at Military Barracks jailed 12 months https://www.adomonline.com/woman-who-stole-church-tv-at-military-barracks-jailed-12-months/ Tue, 27 May 2025 06:52:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538880

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a 24-year-old woman to 12 months’ imprisonment for stealing a 50-inch television at the Teshie Military Barracks in Accra.

Mawuena Tamakloe was convicted after pleading guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing a Hisense UHD 4K TV valued at GH¢8,900. The court, presided over by Mrs Susan Edufful, handed her 12 months’ imprisonment on each count to run concurrently.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Clemence Takyi, informed the court that a pregnancy test ordered for the accused came out negative. However, on the return to the police station, Mawuena escaped by crossing a main road and boarding a commercial vehicle, followed by a taxi.

According to the female case investigator, Mawuena was later rearrested after a rider offered help by chasing both vehicles she used in her escape.

The court struck out an earlier charge of causing unlawful damage to the TV, which belonged to the Church of Pentecost (COP) Whistler Barracks Worship Centre, following a request by the prosecution. The court had previously entered a not guilty plea on that charge based on an explanation offered by the convict.

Delivering the sentence, the judge said she considered Mawuena’s age, her status as a first-time offender, her plea for leniency, and the value of the stolen item.

Chief Inspector Takyi told the court that the complainant, Ebenezer Oppong Aboagye, an Elder of the church, reported the theft, which occurred on May 15, 2025, around 8:30 am. Mawuena was spotted by military officers carrying a TV box bearing the church’s name out of the barracks.

Her explanation during initial questioning did not satisfy the officers, and she was handed over to the Military Police. During further interrogation, she confessed to stealing the TV from one of the church offices. She was subsequently handed over to the police along with the stolen item.

A follow-up inspection with the complainant revealed that the inner wooden door to the head pastor’s office had been damaged. Mawuena admitted to the offence in her caution statement.

The presiding judge advised Mawuena to use her time in prison to reform.

DCOP Tuaruku stressed the need for community cooperation and vigilance in the ongoing nationwide crackdown on drugs and arms while urging the public to report any suspicious activity.

Woman remanded over possession of 17.92kg suspected cannabis https://www.adomonline.com/woman-remanded-over-possession-of-17-92kg-suspected-cannabis/ Sat, 24 May 2025 14:26:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2538207 A 22-year-old British national, Browne-Frater Chyna Jada, has been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly attempting to export 17.92kg of suspected cannabis, valued at $232,960.

She faces charges of attempted exportation of narcotic drugs, conspiracy to commit a crime, and unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Susan Eduful, did not take her plea and indicated that officials of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) were awaiting an analytical report from the Ghana Standards Authority.

The charges and facts were read to Browne-Frater in open court.

Chief Inspector Clemence Takyi, holding brief for the prosecution, opposed the bail application, citing the accused as a flight risk. He also stated that an accomplice, identified only as “Joey,” remains at large.

Defence counsel applied for bail, arguing that Browne-Frater had reliable sureties and would not interfere with investigations. However, the application was denied.

The prosecution informed the court that witnesses in the case are NACOC officers stationed at Terminal 3 of the Kotoka International Airport.

Browne-Frater, born on 27 October 2002, is a British citizen holding a valid United Kingdom passport issued on 15 January 2021 and set to expire on 15 January 2031. She was scheduled to board British Airways flight BA 2066 from Accra to London.

NACOC stated that it had received intelligence from foreign counterparts regarding a drug trafficking syndicate smuggling Thai-grown cannabis into the United Kingdom. Browne-Frater was identified as a person of interest and placed on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Stop List.

On 18 May 2025, at about 6:40 a.m., GIS officials apprehended her at the airport’s departure hall and handed her over to NACOC officers.

Upon interrogation, Browne-Frater claimed she had checked in one suitcase but was unaware of its contents. Officers traced and offloaded the suitcase from the aircraft. She was then escorted to the NACOC Arrival Office, where the suitcase—bearing a tag in her name—was opened in her presence.

Thirty-two vacuum-sealed slabs of a plant-like substance suspected to be cannabis were retrieved. A field test conducted on the substance tested positive for delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active component in cannabis. The total weight was 17.92kg.

Browne-Frater was arrested and taken to NACOC Headquarters for further investigation.

In her statement, she claimed she had been invited to Ghana by her boyfriend, “Joey,” who packed the suitcase in her absence. She said she was told the suitcase contained “Kpoo Keke” alcoholic beverage, Alomo Bitters, and spices.

Browne-Frater has denied knowledge of the narcotic haul. Her accomplice, “Joey,” remains at large. Efforts are underway to apprehend him.

The seized exhibit was sealed in her presence and will be sent to the Ghana Standards Authority for further analysis.

Suspect remanded following alleged machete assault on carpenter https://www.adomonline.com/suspect-remanded-following-alleged-machete-assault-on-carpenter/ Fri, 23 May 2025 10:56:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2537829 A 52-year-old steel bender accused of attacking a carpenter with a machete over a suspected romantic rivalry has been remanded into police custody.

Kojo Senagbe pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing unlawful harm.

The case, presided over by Mr. Kwabena Obiri Yeboah, was adjourned to June 6, 2025, to allow the prosecution time to file disclosures ahead of trial.

Chief Inspector Belinda Asante, leading the prosecution, identified the complainant as Oliver Zinto. She stated that both the complainant and the accused reside at Community 14 Annexe in Lashibi.

According to the prosecution, on May 10, 2025, at around 10:30 p.m., Zinto was walking home when he was suddenly confronted by Senagbe, who ordered him to stop. Sensing trouble, Zinto ignored the order and continued walking.

Senagbe allegedly responded by attacking Zinto with a machete, inflicting wounds to his scalp, left ear, arm, and back. Despite his injuries, Zinto reportedly mustered the strength to overpower his attacker and seize the weapon.

He was later rescued by bystanders and given first aid. Senagbe fled the scene.

A report was lodged at the Klagon Police Station, and Zinto was issued a medical form for treatment, which he submitted upon completion.

Two days later, on May 12, 2025, Senagbe was arrested. In a caution statement before an independent witness, he admitted to the attack, reportedly stating he acted out of anger because Zinto had “taken over” his girlfriend.

The machete used in the assault was retrieved during police investigations.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, May 22, 2025, during a swoop and demolition of a ghetto in the area.

The operation was a joint effort between security agencies and the District Security Coordinating Council (DISEC).

According to reports, following the demolition of the Budumburam Camp, a new ghetto had emerged near the onion market, becoming a haven for wee smokers and individuals engaged in various social vices.

Thursday’s exercise was aimed at clamping down on criminal activities after the expiration of an eviction notice in April 2025.

However, during the demolition, a young man reportedly slipped into one of the buildings unnoticed. Tragically, a structure collapsed on him, leaving him unconscious — a development that sparked outrage among residents.

Enraged locals began pelting stones, while others wielded cutlasses and other weapons, leading to injuries to three officers.

Efforts by the security personnel to restore calm were unsuccessful, as the crowd refused to back down.

The injured officers are currently receiving treatment at the Gomoa Potsin Polyclinic and the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital.

Meanwhile, several slabs of suspected marijuana and weapons were retrieved from the scene, with scores of young men arrested for possession.

UK-born Ghanaian caught smuggling 22kg cannabis from Canada spared jail https://www.adomonline.com/uk-born-ghanaian-caught-smuggling-22kg-cannabis-from-canada-spared-jail/ Wed, 21 May 2025 11:03:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2536875 A pregnant drugs mule who attempted to smuggle 22.5kg of cannabis into Britain has avoided jail after explaining she needed the money for a house deposit.

Daniella KanKam-Adu, 19, was offered £250 to smuggle cannabis worth £225,000 from Canada to Newcastle Airport on March 3 this year.

The London resident, from Queens Road, claimed she believed her luggage contained vapes, but Border Force officers quickly discovered the Class B drug inside.

When questioned by airport officials about her luggage, KanKam-Adu insisted she packed it herself and that it contained nothing suspicious.

Prosecutor Kevin Wardlaw told Newcastle Crown Court: “When asked to open one item of luggage, she said she didn’t have the key. She became aware the locks would be forced and her attitude changed, becoming obstructive and making comments to the officer. The officer was conducting a routine random check and was not being racist.”

The suitcase was found to contain 22.5 kilograms of cannabis, valued at around £67,500 wholesale and with a street value of approximately £225,000.

KanKam-Adu pleaded guilty to being involved in the fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on importing cannabis.

Prosecutors accepted her plea that a friend had suggested she could make money by bringing vapes back to the UK without paying tax.

She explained that she was told she would be paid £250 to carry out the task and traveled to Toronto on tickets provided to her, following instructions.

She said she was given a suitcase to bring back and, due to its size and weight, suspected it contained cannabis rather than vapes.

KanKam-Adu admitted she didn’t know the value of the drugs but decided to return anyway because she needed the money and already had a plane ticket.

Defence lawyer Glenn Gatland told the court KanKam-Adu had a difficult childhood, including time spent in a care home. He added that she discovered she was pregnant before the offence and was determined that her child would not experience a similar upbringing.

Mr Gatland said KanKam-Adu needed money for a deposit on a home and was “naive” to agree to the plan suggested by her friend.

He also revealed she had been remanded in custody for three months, during which time she suffered a miscarriage.

“She has spent three months in custody, which will serve as a deterrent to her to avoid trouble in the future,” Mr Gatland concluded.

The two Ghanaian women who were reportedly lured to Nigeria through a romance scam and subsequently held captive by a criminal syndicate have been safely returned to Accra.

The victims — Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anatasia Baidoo arrived safely at the Kotoka International Airport earlier on Friday, May 9, 2025.

“Both women are in stable condition and will receive the necessary medical care. They will also go through standard police procedures to assist with ongoing investigations,” the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of Ghana Police, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor said at a press briefing.

She cautioned the public about a growing trend of online fraud, particularly romance scams, urging Ghanaians to be cautious when interacting with strangers online.

“We advise the public to refrain from sharing personal or financial information with unknown persons and to report any suspicious behavior to the police immediately,” she added.

“Our deepest gratitude goes to the Nigeria Police Force and the National Signals Bureau for their invaluable support and cooperation,” she said.

How 2 Ghanaian women were tricked with marriage to ‘white men’ and kidnapped in Nigeria

Before they were rescued, a disturbing video of one of them bound with a rope and being physically assaulted by unidentified individuals was shared on social media.

Investigations later confirmed that the woman in the video was a Ghanaian national who had been deceived into traveling to Nigeria under the false pretense of a romantic relationship.

Upon arrival, she was abducted, assaulted and the footage was sent to her family with a ransom demand.

Further police investigations revealed that a second Ghanaian woman had also been lured to the same location by the same criminal group.

Both victims were held at the same premises and subjected to similar abuse.

Families of the two women were said to have made partial ransom payments before police intervention led to their rescue.

The successful rescue operation was a result of a joint effort involving the Ghana Police Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and the National Signals Bureau.

Swissport Drug Bust: Court grants GH₵52m bail to 4 accused persons https://www.adomonline.com/swissport-drug-bust-court-grants-gh%e2%82%b552m-bail-to-4-accused-persons/ Wed, 07 May 2025 15:45:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2532631

An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Her Ladyship Sedinam Awo Kwadam, has granted a bail of thirteen million Ghana cedis (GHS 13,000,000) to each of the four accused persons standing trial for allegedly attempting to transport suspected cocaine at the Kotoka International Airport’s Swissport cargo terminal.

The accused persons have also been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

According to the facts, on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, authorized officers stationed at the Export Section of the Swissport Cargo Terminal, during a routine physical examination of outbound cargoes destined for Brussels in Belgium, intercepted three packages made of wooden boxes on suspicion of concealing narcotic drugs.

When the boxes were emptied of their contents and scanned, the analyzed images indicated the presence of a false compartment in the boxes.

These compartments were deconstructed and found to contain a total of 73 compressed slabs of suspected narcotics. When cut open, a sampled slab revealed a whitish powdery substance, which field-tested positive for cocaine. All four suspects were arrested on April 23, 2025, and taken to the NACOC Headquarters.

All four accused persons have denied knowledge of the 73 parcels of cocaine.

The thirteen million Ghana cedis bail condition for each of them comes with four sureties, one to be justified with a one million Ghana cedi worth of landed property.

All the sureties, according to the court order, must be civil servants with net monthly earnings of not less than five thousand Ghana cedis. The accused persons have also been prohibited from acquiring new passports.

The court has thus ordered NACOC officials to take their biodata and submit the same to passport offices nationwide in order for the accused persons to be flagged whenever they attempt to acquire passports.

The accused persons have been ordered to immediately submit their passports to the court registry.

Additionally, the accused persons have been placed on a stop list at all exit points of the country, with an order not to move out of the jurisdiction without the express permission of the court. They have also been ordered to report to NACOC twice every week.

Two Ghanaian women have been rescued after falling victim to a romance scam that led to their kidnapping in Nigeria, in a case that has shocked the public and triggered cross-border investigations involving security agencies in Ghana and Nigeria.

The victims, Anastasia Baidoo Arthur and Evelyn Konadu, were lured into Nigeria under the guise of marriage proposals from men they believed to be white foreigners, only to be abducted and assaulted upon arrival.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, detailed how the women were deceived by a criminal syndicate operating under fake identities online.

“These suspects met the two victims, Anastasia Baidoo Arthur and Evelyn Konadu, through their Facebook accounts. The suspects posed as white men who wanted to marry the victims. The two unsuspecting victims became convinced and accepted the marriage proposals,” DCOP Donkor disclosed.

The victims travelled separately but arrived on the same day—April 22, 2025—at a pre-arranged location in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, where they were immediately kidnapped.

According to police investigations, the suspects – Peter Okoye, 31; Paulinus Chidokwe, 35; Chinoso Okafor, 35; and Christian Emeka – carried out the abduction. Okoye and Emeka, both Nigerians with prior ties to Ghana, had previously been involved in the operations of QNET in Ghana before returning to Nigeria. Emeka returned to Ghana again in 2024 before the kidnapping plot was executed.

DCOP Donkor explained that the group was part of a broader syndicate engaged in romance scams in both Ghana and Nigeria. “Peter Okoye, Christian Emeka and Basil Okonkwo, all Nigerians, were into romance scams in Nigeria and Ghana,” she noted.

After kidnapping the victims, the suspects subjected them to brutal treatment. The women were stripped, tied up, and assaulted with machetes. They were also threatened with death, wrapped in bedsheets, had their heads covered with black polythene, and were told they would be hanged using nylon ropes.

The ordeal was recorded on video and circulated on social media. Copies were also sent to the victims’ families along with a ransom demand of GH₵500,000 for each victim.

“Videos of the torture were shared widely on social media and used as a tool to extort families,” DCOP Donkor revealed. Before the arrests, GH₵18,000 had already been transferred via mobile money to various accounts linked to the suspects.

With assistance from Ghana’s National Signals Bureau (NSB) and the Nigeria Police Force, the victims were eventually rescued and eight suspects were arrested from hideouts in both countries.

“The Ghana Police Service is collaborating closely with Nigerian authorities to expedite the return of the two victims and the suspects back to Ghana,” DCOP Donkor confirmed. “As of today, both suspects and victims are with the Nigerian authorities, and efforts are being made to transport the victims to Ghana.”

She added that the suspects would also be extradited to Ghana to assist with further investigations.

Police have cautioned the public against falling prey to online romance scams and urged individuals to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The disturbing incident has sparked renewed calls for vigilance in online engagements and greater collaboration between security agencies across borders to tackle cyber-enabled crimes.

Adu-Boahene remanded into EOCO’s custody for 7 days https://www.adomonline.com/adu-boahene-remanded-into-eocos-custody-for-7-days/ Fri, 02 May 2025 11:31:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530992 An Accra High Court has ordered that the former head of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, whose bail conditions have not been met, be kept in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for seven working days.

This will allow the Attorney General to complete the preparation of witness statements for the case.

The case has been adjourned to May 13 for further directions by the court.

At the last court hearing, the matter was adjourned to today for the court to consider submissions regarding the continuation of bail in camera. The aim was to determine whether the first accused person should remain on the existing bail terms.

Counsel for the accused persons had submitted that the existing bail conditions should continue for all accused individuals. However, the Attorney General opposed this for the first accused person, stating that he had interfered with potential witnesses for the prosecution.

As a result of the AG’s submission, the court ordered Counsel for both parties to appear before it in camera to make their respective submissions.

After considering the submissions, the judge ruled that the accused be kept in custody for seven days to allow the Attorney General to finalize witness statements.

Counsel for the accused, Atta Akyea, requested that the seven days include weekends, but the judge explained that the AG does not work on weekends. Deputy AG Srem Sai also opposed this request. The judge further clarified that the intention was to allow for seven working days because one potential witness is outside the jurisdiction, and the state needs time.

Background

Attorney-General Dominic Ayine has formally charged former NSB Director-General Kwabena Adu-Boahene and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, over corruption offences amounting to several millions of cedis.

Along with two others, Mildred Donkor and Advantage Solutions Limited, they face 11 charges, including stealing, money laundering, defrauding by false pretenses, and wilfully causing financial loss.

According to the writ filed at the High Court on Wednesday, April 30, Mr. Adu-Boahene, who was responsible for overseeing critical national security infrastructure, including contracts with foreign companies, signed a deal with an Israeli company, ISC Holdings Limited, to purchase cyber defense software for $7 million.

In total, Adu-Boahene is alleged to have transferred approximately GHS 49 million (around $7 million) from NSB funds into his personal accounts, falsely justifying these transactions as payments for the cyber defense systems, alongside his accomplices.

‘You didn’t suffer any injury’ – State Attorney tells JoyNews’ Latif Iddrisu https://www.adomonline.com/you-didnt-suffer-any-injury-state-attorney-tells-joynews-latif-iddrisu/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 07:51:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2530282 A Senior State Attorney has cast doubt on the injuries sustained by journalist Latif Iddrisu, despite his claims of brutal assault by officers of the Ghana Police Service on March 27, 2018.

During cross-examination at the Human Rights Division of the High Court, State Attorney Nancynetta Twumasi Asiamah suggested that the Multimedia Group employee may not have suffered any injuries at all, even if he was assaulted by uniformed police officers at the CID Headquarters that evening.

Presenting a series of speculative theories, the State Attorney implied that Latif’s decision to seek treatment in California was a calculated attempt to bolster his case.

“You went on a fishing expedition,” she said, referring to his visits to Loma Linda University Medical Centre and the Southern California Brain Centre for treatment.

Latif rejected the claims as false. He explained that his condition showed little improvement after nearly two years of treatment in Ghana.

He told the court that he endured severe pain while trying to keep his job at Multimedia, pushing through repeated relapses. “The decision to travel abroad for medical attention,” he said, “was necessitated by the apparent lack of improvement in my condition.”

He maintained that he was “assaulted by uniformed officers of the Ghana Police Service” and suffered a “fractured skull and its cascading effects.”

The State Attorney also challenged the journalist’s failure to provide photographic evidence of his injuries in court. In response, Latif said he and his legal team anticipated attempts by the police to deny responsibility, which is why they requested CCTV footage from the CID Headquarters. The police have refused to release the footage, claiming their cameras did not capture the incident.

“I put it to you that no police officer assaulted you,” the State Attorney said again.

Latif described the assertion as “insensitive.” He told the court, “My Lord, it is very insensitive on the part of Counsel to suggest that no officer assaulted me.”

He gave a detailed and emotional account of the alleged assault and added, “I am the one who suffered the beatings and the injuries.” He described as “traumatic” the recurring suggestion that no assault occurred.

“The medical records will tell the story, My Lord. The medical record will tell the story of skull fracture, brain injury, PTSD, and traumatic brain injury,” he stated emphatically.

In another twist, the State Attorney theorised that Latif could have sustained the injury during the brief period between leaving the CID Headquarters and arriving at his office in Kokomlemle.

Latif denied the claim outright, calling it false and reiterating that the injury occurred at the hands of police officers.

The State Attorney further argued that all the physicians who treated Latif based their conclusions solely on his narrative.

The journalist countered, “Doctors and physicians are professionals. Medical professionals don’t take complaints at face value. They conduct their investigations to arrive at a professional conclusion, which was what happened in my case, My Lord.”

Latif, who returned from the United States in February after another round of intensive treatment following a relapse, became visibly emotional at some points during cross-examination.

Nevertheless, he maintained his composure and responded firmly to the State Attorney’s questions.

He also revealed to the court that he now owes Loma Linda University Medical Centre over $25,000 for his most recent treatment.

Latif has been in the witness box for three years, undergoing continuous cross-examination in a trial that has drawn criticism for its length and complexity.

The case is scheduled to return to court on June 12, 2025.

According to Sylvia Awumey, a journalist based in Ketu South, the incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday.

She reported that the deceased, Christopher Ahordo, popularly known in the area as Colombo, had unusually extended his working hours beyond his typical 5:00 p.m. closing time under unclear circumstances.

Eyewitnesses stated that while Colombo was in the process of closing his mobile money (MoMo) shop at about 6:15 p.m., two men dressed in long robes, with their faces covered and wielding pump-action guns, approached him.

They seized a bag believed to contain money, and as they were leaving the scene, one of the robbers shot him in the left side of his chest.

Colombo is said to have died at the scene. Witnesses indicated they were unable to assist him immediately, as the assailants were firing indiscriminately while fleeing into a nearby bush.

The incident reportedly occurred at Gbagblakope, near the Diamond Cement Factory in Aflao.

According to Sylvia, residents retrieved the body and conveyed it to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary.

The matter has since been reported to the municipal police, who are now handling the investigation.

MoMo robberies have become a common occurrence in Ghana, with several people losing their lives. This year alone, multiple incidents have been reported in the Ashanti Region, with fatalities recorded.

Keta: Police destroy 24 bags of suspected cannabis https://www.adomonline.com/keta-police-destroy-24-bags-of-suspected-cannabis/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 10:45:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529463

The Keta Divisional Police Command in the Volta Region has destroyed 24 maxim bags of suspected cannabis at Adzido in the municipality.

The suspected weed was intercepted on December 29, 2023, and was later destroyed on Friday, April 25, 2025.

Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Maxwell Agyemang, Keta Divisional Police Commander, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

He stated that the suspected cannabis was intercepted at Adzido beach, where unknown culprits had dumped it.

“We had a tip-off about the suspect who dumped the cannabis at Adzido, and we intercepted it. Unfortunately, no arrest was made,” he said.

Superintendent Agyemang explained that a series of investigations were conducted in and around the Keta Municipality to apprehend and punish the culprits, but no one has since been identified in connection with the act to face the full rigor of the law.

He said that each of the 24 bags of suspected cannabis contained 30 wrapped pieces, with each estimated to cost around GH₵500, totaling GH₵360,000 for 720 pieces.

“The last time we conducted a similar exercise was on September 27, 2024, after we intercepted 78 maxim bags of marijuana at the same location upon a tip-off.”

Superintendent Agyemang said the Keta Divisional Command had previously held a meeting with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Wisdom Seade, to organize a comprehensive education program on drug abuse and addiction in the communities, so the public could identify the side effects of drug abuse.

He said further information gathered indicated that many young students in senior and junior high schools have been engaging in drugs such as tramadol, tamaking, and cannabis, which destroys their future progression.

He emphasized that the use of illicit drugs was against the laws of the country and promised that the Keta police command would do everything possible to crack down on the use of illicit drugs among the youth within the municipality.

He urged the public to report any act of illegal drug use that could jeopardize or endanger others in the communities.

Madam Elaina Annor-Agyapong, the Senior Narcotic Drugs Control Officer at Aflao, who witnessed the exercise, said that the consequences of using hard drugs include sickness, mental disorder, death, and imprisonment.

She urged the youth to desist from using such unprescribed drugs for a successful and brighter future.

Two remanded over human trafficking https://www.adomonline.com/two-remanded-over-human-trafficking/ Thu, 17 Apr 2025 09:31:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526268 Two individuals who allegedly trafficked three persons from Nigeria to Ghana and forced them into prostitution have appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Chidemma Nweke, also known as Mama, a 24-year-old sex worker, and Mercy Francis, a 27-year-old trader, are accused of luring the victims from Nigeria under the pretext of securing them jobs.

The accused were arrested by a team of police officers at Asuogya Krobo in Wassa Akropong in the Western North Region.

They are facing charges of abetment of crime to wit human trafficking, and human trafficking. Nweke is alleged to have trafficked one victim, while Francis, also known as Blessing or Gina, allegedly trafficked two.

Both have pleaded not guilty. The court, presided over by Mrs. Christina Cann, remanded them into lawful custody to reappear on April 29, 2025.

Meanwhile, two of their alleged accomplices, identified as Favour and Blessing, are currently at large.

According to the prosecution, the complainant is Chief Calistus Eloziepuwa, President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Ghana. The accused, both Nigerian nationals, were residing at Wassa Akropong.

On April 7, 2025, Chief Eloziepuwa and victim Favour Chinecherem reported the case to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. They explained that a good Samaritan had helped Favour escape from the traffickers while en route to Accra.

During interrogation, Favour disclosed that more victims were being held captive at Asuogya Krobo in Wassa Akropong and identified all four suspects.

On April 10, 2025, a team from the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, led by the Station Officer, conducted an operation in Wassa Akropong. Six additional victims were rescued, and the two accused were arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nweke had recruited and transported Favour from Nigeria to Ghana under the pretense of offering her work in a boutique. Upon arrival, however, Nweke confined her in a brothel at Asuogya Krobo and forced her into prostitution, collecting the proceeds.

Later, Mercy Francis, who managed the brothel and a drinking spot called Royal City Pub, advised Nweke to sell the victim. Mercy allegedly introduced buyers, including another individual named Favour (the third accused) and one Blessing (the fourth accused). The victim was reportedly sold for GH¢5,000.

Following the sale, Mercy received GH¢500 as her share, which she used to paint the pub.

Prosecutors said investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.

IT technician jailed 6 months for defrauding auto mechanic https://www.adomonline.com/it-technician-jailed-6-months-for-defrauding-auto-mechanic/ Thu, 17 Apr 2025 06:39:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526211 The Kaneshie District Court One has sentenced Gideon Kojo Elliam, 37, to six months in hard labour for defrauding an auto mechanic of GH₵53,000.00.

Elliam took the money from the complainant, Mr. Daniel Odoi Otu, under the pretext of supplying him with an auto diagnostic machine but failed to deliver the equipment.

He admitted to the charge and was sentenced accordingly.

During the trial, Elliam confessed to receiving GH₵37,000.00 from Otu but disputed the complainant’s total claim of GH₵53,000.00.

The Court advised Otu to pursue civil action against Elliam to recover the outstanding amount once the convict serves his sentence.

Presenting the facts, Police Chief Inspector Achana Apeweh told the Court that the complainant, Otu — an auto mechanic residing at Kasoa Nyayano — gave Elliam, an IT technician from Takoradi, GH₵53,000.00 in May 2023 to purchase the auto diagnostic machine.

Elliam promised to deliver the equipment by December 2023 but failed, and all efforts by Otu to reach him proved futile.

Chief Inspector Apeweh said Elliam was later arrested at his hideout on April 1, 2025.

During police investigations, Elliam admitted to using the money for personal purposes. He was subsequently charged and arraigned before the court.

Daniel Ayetey, 38, pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence.

The court, presided over by Isaac Addo, adjourned the case to May 14, 2025, and instructed the prosecution to ensure full disclosure of evidence before the next hearing.

According to Police Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey, the complainant, Bright Oduro, a mechanic based in La, had been searching for a container to rent for his wife in February 2025.

During his search, an agent identified as Leonard Dunyo introduced Oduro to Ayetey, who allegedly claimed he had a container available for rent. Both parties settled on a two-year advance payment of GH¢16,000.

The complainant subsequently paid GH¢11,000 to Ayetey and spent an additional GH¢8,000 on renovation materials for the container.

However, the arrangement took an unexpected turn when Ayetey’s aunt, identified as the rightful owner of the container, instructed Oduro to halt the renovation. She also provided documents to confirm her ownership of the property.

Feeling defrauded, the complainant lodged a report with the police, which led to Ayetey’s arrest and prosecution.

Ex-convict held for alleged sodomy and death threats https://www.adomonline.com/ex-convict-held-for-alleged-sodomy-and-death-threats/ Tue, 08 Apr 2025 07:10:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2522772 An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Abdul Razak, 55, an ex-convict, for allegedly engaging in anal sex with a 13-year-old boy.

Razak, also known as Nii Atofotse, faces additional charges of threatening death and stealing, all of which he denied.

Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru informed the court, presided over by Enid Marful-Sau, that the complainant is a trader and the guardian of the victim, a Junior High School student.

The court was also told that Razak, an ex-convict, resides in Manhean, while the complainant and the victim’s parents are neighbors in Accra.

The prosecution stated that the victim often spent time at the complainant’s house due to his parents’ busy schedules.

On January 7, 2025, around 1300 hours, the victim was sent to deliver a laptop computer and a charger to his brother.

The complainant was at home when he received a phone call from the victim’s father, informing him that the victim had damaged someone’s car.

The caller allegedly demanded GH¢500.00, threatening to report the incident to the Adabraka Police Station if the money was not paid.

The complainant was instructed to go to the police station to assist the victim.

The court heard that the complainant complied and went to the police station, but did not find the victim there.

The complainant then returned home and searched the entire area but was unable to locate either the victim or the caller.

Later, the victim returned home and, when questioned, revealed to the complainant that Razak had approached him while he was on his way back after delivering the laptop computer and charger.

According to the prosecution, Razak asked whether the charger the victim was carrying was a phone charger, and the victim clarified that it was a laptop charger.

Razak then pulled a knife from his pocket, lured the victim into an unfinished building at Odumase, and asked for the victim’s parents’ phone number.

He used the number to call the victim’s father and demanded GH¢500 from him.

Razak also threatened the victim with the knife, forcing him to tell his father that he had indeed damaged his car.

He then ordered the victim to perform oral sex on him.

The prosecution further stated that after becoming erect, Razak sat on a cement block in the uncompleted building and commanded the victim to sit on his manhood.

When the victim attempted to have anal sex with him, he was unable to penetrate.

Razak then made the victim bend over and inserted his finger in the boy’s anus for some time before forcing his manhood into the victim’s rear to engage in anal sex.

After the act, Razak took the laptop charger from the victim, searched his pockets, and stole GH¢50.00.

The prosecution also reported that Razak threatened the victim, saying there were three marks on his arm and that if the victim informed anyone about the incident, the marks would reveal it to him, and he would come after the victim to kill him.

Later, the court heard that Razak took the victim to a nearby provision store, where he bought a drink and sachet water for him before leaving.

The prosecution stated that on March 5, 2025, Razak was spotted near the victim’s school.

The victim raised the alarm, leading to Razak’s arrest. The complainant was promptly informed.

The court was told that during investigations at the Amasaman Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Razak was found to have been involved in a similar crime in March 2017.

He was freed from Nsawam Prison in November 2024.

The prosecution stated that a Police medical report form was issued to the complainant to facilitate the victim’s hospital examination, treatment, and subsequent report.

On March 7, 2025, the endorsed medical report form was submitted by the complainant.

Following this, the accused was cautioned and later arraigned after thorough investigations.

Painter accused of stealing BoG cables granted GH₵1 million bail https://www.adomonline.com/painter-accused-of-stealing-bog-cables-granted-gh%e2%82%b51-million-bail/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 09:29:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2521672 A painter accused of stealing electrical cables at the Bank of Ghana building in Ridge has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

Ahmed Mohammed Lawal was admitted to bail in the sum of GH₵1 million with two sureties. The presiding judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, also ordered the Prosecution to comply with the rules of disclosure. The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.

Lawal faces charges of unlawful entry and stealing electrical cables worth GH₵1,035,500, a charge he denies.

Earlier, the Prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agustin Kingsley Oppong, informed the Court that the complainants—Samuel Nii Tettey, a safety officer, and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, an electrical engineer—were employees at the Bank of Ghana’s new building, which was under construction.

According to the Prosecution, on February 16, 2025, the complainants discovered that someone had broken into the Energy Farm at the construction site and stolen a quantity of copper cables, specifically 1c x240 and 1c x300 square cables, valued at GH₵1,035,500.

The Prosecution explained that the discovery led to a review of the site’s Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, which showed Lawal and two others stealing the cables. The bundles of electrical cables were stored at the site.

The complainants apprehended Lawal and handed him over to the police. Investigations revealed that the accused and two accomplices, who remain at large, accessed the Energy Farm via a scaffold. They used a sharp object to cut the cables and remove them.

Further investigations showed that Lawal sold the stolen cables to a buyer at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and received GH₵2,000 for his share.

Despite being unable to lead the police to arrest his accomplices or the alleged “dishonest receiver,” Lawal is facing serious charges in connection with the theft.

The Central Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the transportation of electricity cables believed to be the property of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This follows a Facebook post by Gomoa Central MP, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, who revealed that the suspects were apprehended by vigilant residents.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Sulemana and Iddrisu Basit, both driver’s mates of an articulated truck, were arrested on April 1, 2025, at Gomoa Awombrew in the Central Region.

The truck, with registration number GC 7410-11, was found parked with 28 rims of ECG cables onboard.

This development comes amid growing controversy surrounding the disappearance of over 1,300 containers of ECG items at the Tema Port. Following an intelligence-led operation by National Security, 14 individuals, including four Ghanaians and 10 Chinese nationals, have been arrested and are assisting with investigations.
