US seizes $237k stolen bulldozer in Baltimore before shipment to Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/us-seizes-237k-stolen-bulldozer-in-baltimore-before-shipment-to-ghana/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 15:48:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577500 US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Baltimore have intercepted a stolen heavy-duty tractor-bulldozer valued at about $237,000 that was being shipped to Ghana.

In a press release, the CBP said the 2015 Caterpillar D8T machine was stopped on September 3 during a routine export inspection at the Area Port of Baltimore. A check of the vehicle identification number revealed it matched an active theft report filed in Carroll County, Maryland.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed the report, leading CBP officers to seize the dozer before it could leave the port.

The Acting Area Port Director for Baltimore, Jason Kropiewnicki, said the operation underscored CBP’s commitment to disrupting criminal networks that attempt to smuggle stolen vehicles abroad.

“Customs and Border Protection officers continue to combat transnational criminal organisations by interrupting the international trade in stolen vehicles at our seaports. We will continue to secure our nation’s borders, recover stolen vehicle exports, and work with our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to hold these criminal organisations accountable,” he stated.

Baltimore is considered one of the busiest hubs for recovering stolen vehicles in the United States.

Last year, the Baltimore Field Office recovered 250 stolen vehicle exports, of which about 60 per cent were bound for West Africa. Ghana accounted for 28 of those recoveries, making it a frequent destination for intercepted shipments.

Nationally, CBP reported a rise in the recovery of stolen vehicles being exported through U.S. ports. In 2024 alone, 1,445 vehicles were seized, a 10 per cent increase compared with 2023 and 81 per cent higher than in 2021.

While auto manufacturers, dealers and insurers have stepped up measures to combat theft — resulting in a 17 per cent fall in reported cases last year — CBP says international trafficking in stolen vehicles remains a growing challenge.

CBP officers at ports of entry are also responsible for screening cargo and travellers, intercepting illicit drugs, unreported currency, counterfeit goods and other prohibited products that threaten US security and economic stability.

2025 WASSCE: Students allegedly assault housemistress for preventing cheating https://www.adomonline.com/2025-wassce-students-allegedly-assault-housemistress-for-preventing-cheating/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 15:47:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2576217 The ongoing 2025 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), expected to run smoothly, turned chaotic at Wesley Senior High School (SHS) in Konongo, Ashanti Region.

Some students reportedly pelted stones at the residence of the senior housemistress in a violent outburst after she allegedly prevented them from cheating.

Reports by Accra-based Citi News suggest the incident stemmed from a confrontation between the housemistress and a candidate during the Christian Religious Studies (CRS) paper on Friday, September 5.

According to school authorities, the student was stopped for allegedly attempting to cheat, after which he verbally abused the housemistress. He was, however, later made to apologise and taken through counselling.

But on the night of Sunday, September 7, a group of students allegedly launched an attack on the housemistress’s residence, hurling stones and causing panic on campus.

Police were called in to restore calm, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.

Headmistress Rev. Agnes Gaisie stressed that the situation is under control and assured parents and stakeholders that the ongoing examinations are continuing without disruption.

The development comes as the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of 16 people nationwide for examination malpractice in the ongoing exercise.

Gbenyiri: Your enemies are poverty and bad roads, not yourselves – Wa West MP to factions https://www.adomonline.com/gbenyiri-your-enemies-are-poverty-and-bad-roads-not-yourselves-wa-west-mp-to-factions/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 07:18:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2576008 The Wa West MP, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has urged the feuding factions in the Gbenyiri conflict to recognise that their true enemies are not each other but poverty, bad roads, and underdevelopment.

Addressing some 48,000 displaced people, mostly women and children, Mr. Toobu, who is the Deputy Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, described war as a destructive force that derails peace and development.

He stressed that his mission as a natural mediator was to appeal to both factions, particularly chiefs, to embrace peace for the sake of their communities.

“Peace in Sawla-Tuna-Kalba is all we are praying for, and the chiefs have assured us that they are willing to toe the path of peace,” he said.

He also cautioned the youth against using social media to fuel conflict.

“If you have sons and daughters who are educated and active on social media, tell them to use that power to call for peace, not war. War is destructive.

“As you sit here, you have become internally displaced persons in your own country, and other people are feeding you while your farms remain abandoned.”

Mr. Toobu lamented the devastation of the conflict, noting that farmlands filled with maize and groundnuts had been deserted.

“I tell you today that your real enemies are not yourselves, but poverty, bad roads, and underdevelopment. This cannot be life. You cannot be internally displaced persons in your own country,” he said.

He called on all stakeholders to act swiftly to end the conflict.

“Let’s ensure that we bring peace so that these children don’t suffer unduly, and sisters and mothers will not suffer unduly. The time to act is now. Peace is what we are calling for.”

The MP was accompanied by the Dagaaba Chief of the Savannah Region, Naa Maxwell Kuubasagra, and executive members of the Dagaaba Youth Association in the region.

2025 BECE: How GES officials colluded with candidates to cheat [Watch] https://www.adomonline.com/2025-bece-how-ges-officials-colluded-with-candidates-to-cheat-watch/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 07:12:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575993 The 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), an all-important gateway to secondary education, has been rocked by one of the most disturbing cases of institutionalised malpractice ever uncovered.

JoyNews Hotline investigation led by GH Probe’s Francisca Enchil reveals how some officials of the Ghana Education Service (GES), alongside supervisors, headteachers, and invigilators, transformed the sacred national exercise into an organised crime syndicate—trading academic integrity for financial gain.

At two examination centres in Accra – Derby Avenue RC Basic School and St. George’s Anglican Basic School—investigators found shocking collusion.

Invigilators openly demanded ‘tokens’ of GHS60 daily, supervisors pocketed envelopes of GHS400, and candidates were even asked to contribute to a so-called “Aseda Offertory.”

Instead of vigilance, supervisors acted as lookouts, warning invigilators whenever WAEC or National Security officials drew near.

Teachers and headteachers, despite being barred from exam centres, moved in and out freely, bribing officials and sometimes directly feeding candidates answers.

Candidates smuggled mobile phones into exam halls, some using artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT to generate answers. Handwritten and printed solutions were distributed, with some invigilators dictating answers aloud.

The exposé has triggered outrage. The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davis, has warned teachers face dismissal if caught.

Civil society voices, like Kofi Asare of Africa Education Watch, caution that Ghana is “teaching children corruption in basic schools” – a dangerous normalisation of dishonesty.

Gbenyiri conflict: Man shot dead while attempting to charge phone at Kalba https://www.adomonline.com/gbenyiri-conflict-man-shot-dead-while-attempting-to-charge-phone-at-kalba/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 07:01:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575998 A middle-aged man has been shot and killed by unknown assailants near Kalba, a suburb of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District in the Savannah Region.

Police say the deceased, whose name has been withheld, had travelled from his community, Uro—which has no electricity—to Kalba to charge his mobile phone.

He was attacked by gunmen who emerged from the bush and shot him while on his motorcycle, dying on the spot.

His body has since been deposited at St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo by the Ghana Police Service.

Local stakeholders believe the incident is linked to the protracted Gbenyiri conflict, which has already claimed multiple lives, destroyed property, and displaced more than 50,000 people.

On Saturday, August 23, a dispute between a Gbenyiri resident and the chief’s son over a parcel of land triggered violent clashes.

The conflict escalated the following day, spreading to Kalba and other parts of the district, leaving scores injured and communities destabilised.

The latest killing comes despite the deployment of 400 police personnel to the conflict zone to restore peace.

Recently, Inspector General of Police Patrick Tetteh Yohunu, alongside senior officials from the Armed Forces, Prisons Service, and Immigration Service, visited Kalba, Sawla, and other affected communities to assess the situation.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration over the security situation:

“With this killing, who do you think will trust the system again? Some of us suspected this to happen because the guys are still around in Kalba town, and if you deceive yourself and go there, they will just end your life like this farmer.

To me, this reaffirms the fears and mistrust in the system. The authorities need to do more than just talk and go,” he said.

The latest death brings the official toll from the conflict to 32.

2025 WASSCE: 16 arrested, 64 phones seized https://www.adomonline.com/2025-wassce-16-arrested-64-phones-seized/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 06:35:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575997 The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has raised alarm over a surge in examination malpractice during this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination for School Candidates (WASSCE-SC).

According to WAEC monitoring teams, irregularities recorded included impersonation, unauthorized use of mobile phones, and the circulation of examination questions and answers.

Despite strict measures put in place by WAEC and the Ghana Education Service (GES), the integrity of the exams has been compromised.

Addressing a press briefing, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, revealed that 16 individuals had been arrested at various centres, while 64 mobile phones were seized at a single school during the Elective Mathematics paper.

He added that two individuals arrested for impersonation at Ghana College in Kasoa were handed six-month prison sentences, while an accomplice received an eight-month sentence.

At Christian IPS in Kukurantumi, a proprietor and an invigilator were caught operating a WhatsApp group to circulate exam questions and are currently in police custody.

Other incidents were also reported at schools such as St. Vincent College and Yeji Senior High School, though some suspects managed to evade arrest.

Mr. Kapi condemned the involvement of both students and teachers, urging school authorities to uphold the integrity of the examination process.

The council has pledged strict disciplinary action against all persons and schools implicated. Scripts from institutions linked to malpractice will undergo further scrutiny, while a full list of affected schools is being compiled.

Touching on the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), Mr. Kapi disclosed that some withheld results remain under investigation due to suspected collusion, with final decisions expected soon.

This year’s WASSCE-SC, which began on August 5, 2025, will conclude on September 19, 2025, with 461,640 candidates taking part. Earlier, the BECE was held from June 11 to 18, 2025, involving over 603,000 candidates, with provisional results released on August 23, 2025.

WAEC has called on parents, schools, and communities to support its efforts in safeguarding the credibility of Ghana’s examinations, stressing that fairness and integrity remain central to its mandate.

The convicts Francis Friday, Linus Agwazie, and Russell Ekenze were apprehended by officers from the Suame Divisional Police Command on June 20, 2025, during targeted operations against car theft syndicates.

On July 22, 2025, they appeared before the Atasemanso Circuit Court, where Russell Ekenze pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL).

His accomplices, Friday and Agwazie, pleaded not guilty, resulting in a full trial.

However, Circuit Court 3, on July 23, found them guilty on two counts each, sentencing them to 8 years each (concurrent).

On the same day, Circuit Court 1 also handed down an additional 20-year concurrent sentence to all three convicts for related offences.

In a further ruling on July 24, Circuit Court 2 convicted Ekenze again, adding another 10-year concurrent sentence.

The three are currently serving their terms at the Kumasi Central Prison.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, through the Suame Divisional Police, described the convictions as a major step in dismantling organized and cross-border criminal networks.

The arrests were made at various centres, including Yeji Senior High School, Abbott College in Asante Bekwai, and Atwima Kwanwoma Presbyterian SHS.

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, told journalists on Friday that the number could rise as investigations progress, adding that results from the affected schools will face extra scrutiny.

One of the most serious cases occurred at Adventist Day Senior High School in Kumasi, where invigilators seized several mobile phones from candidates. The centre was subsequently closed, and students were relocated to WAEC’s regional office to continue their papers under strict supervision.

Mr. Kapi also confirmed that two impersonators arrested in Kasoa were sentenced to six months in prison each, while an accomplice received an eight-month jail term.

In Kukurantumi, a school proprietor and a teacher were arrested for allegedly operating a WhatsApp group to share exam questions. At Abura Dunkwa, a candidate identified as Ebenezer Fynn was arrested for impersonation and is assisting police with investigations.

National Service Person allegedly steals GH¢303k from customer’s account https://www.adomonline.com/national-service-person-allegedly-steals-gh%c2%a2303k-from-customers-account/ Thu, 04 Sep 2025 15:44:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2574972 A 25-year-old National Service Person, Jesper Kobina Mensah, has been hauled before the Circuit Court in Accra for allegedly stealing GH¢303,950 through unauthorised electronic transfers from a Stanbic Bank Ghana Ltd. customer.

The case, which is being presided over by Her Honour Sedinam Awo Kwadam, saw the accused formally charged with one count of stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as amended by Paragraph 4 of NLCD 398, and Section 107 of the Electronic Transaction Act, 2008 (Act 772).

Jesper Kobina Mensah pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Following arguments in court, the judge denied the accused person’s application for bail and remanded him into police custody.

The case is being prosecuted by DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, who requested more time.

According to the brief facts presented in court, the complaint was filed by Stanbic Bank Ghana Ltd and represented by its Manager of Investigations, Ms. Genevieve AmaGadikor.

The report stems from an incident on July 15, 2025, when a customer of the bank, name withheld, a Ghanaian residing in South Africa, reported unauthorised electronic transfers from his bank account, totalling GH¢303,950.

The stolen funds were allegedly transferred to various MTN Mobile Money accounts with the following details: 0598633019 (Name: Abraham Asiedu), 0544116186 (Name: Stephen Eshun)

And 0597564947 (Name: Fatau Sulley).

Further investigations led to the arrest of Fatau Sulley on July 28, 2025.

Sulley, identified as a Binance merchant who trades in the cryptocurrency USDT, admitted during interrogation that he had received funds via Mobile Money for cryptocurrency transactions on the Binance platform but claimed he only served as a middleman.

On August 28, 2025, police intelligence led to the arrest of Jesper Kobina Mensah at his hideout at Nungua, a suburb of Accra.

A search of his premises revealed a trove of electronic and telecommunication equipment, including nine mobile phones, two laptops, 108 registered Telecel SIM cards, 27 empty Telecel SIM starter packs, 72 registered MTN SIM cards, 88 empty MTN SIM starter packs, and other assorted items linked to digital fraud.

In his caution statement to the police, Mensah admitted to being the user of the two key mobile numbers involved in the transactions and acknowledged receipt of the funds.

However, he claimed that he had acted on behalf of unidentified Chinese nationals, who directed him to convert the money into USDT (a stablecoin) and forward it via the Binance platform.

The case investigator, Detective Sergeant James Kwesi Turkson, confirmed that investigations are still ongoing, particularly in tracking down the supposed international accomplices.

Mensah is expected to reappear in court on a date yet to be announced as the prosecution continues to build its case.

Aboku was convicted on the charge of stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector John Brahene, the complainant, Albert Nahi, a 56-year-old farmer from Akotoe village near Asesewa, reported the theft of his black Haojue motorbike with registration number M-21-GR 3036, valued at GH¢17,000.

He said on July 24, 2025, at about 0600hours, Mr. Nahi parked the motorbike at the Star Oil Filling Station in Asesewa before travelling to Accra.

Miracles Aboagye challenges convictions in Ablekuma North re-run violence  https://www.adomonline.com/miracles-aboagye-challenges-convictions-in-ablekuma-north-re-run-violence/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 10:04:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572460 New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has raised concerns over the recent conviction of eight individuals linked to the Ablekuma North constituency re-run violence.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV’s “Badwam,” Mr. Aboagye questioned the process that led to the convictions, particularly the absence of victim involvement in identifying the perpetrators.

“Who exactly was arrested? Were the victims invited to court to identify those who attacked them? We have videos and pictures of the attackers, yet the convictions were announced without clarity on who exactly was punished,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Bawumia campaign team noted that while he respects the authority of the Ghana Police Service, proper identification of suspects by the victims should have been central to the process.

“The victims should have been invited for identification. The attack involved a mob, but not everyone in the crowd assaulted people. Arresting individuals linked to the incident without victim confirmation does not necessarily mean they are the real attackers,” he explained.

Mr. Aboagye warned that such procedural gaps risk undermining public trust.

“Such actions don’t help, and I believe the police can improve,” he added.

Despite his concerns, he reaffirmed his respect for both the police and the clergy, emphasizing that these are institutions whose authority he does not take lightly.

Illegal miner remanded for threatening security agencies with firearm https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-miner-remanded-for-threatening-security-agencies-with-firearm/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 07:18:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572353 The Juaboso Magistrate Court has remanded into police custody one Evans Amoako, popularly known as Sasso, after he was arrested for brandishing a firearm in a viral video and issuing threats against security agencies.

On Sunday, August 24, 2025, a video circulated on social media capturing Amoako and some unidentified accomplices issuing threats to security personnel.

In the footage, Amoako, holding a locally manufactured pistol loaded with live ammunition, warned that any security personnel who attempted to arrest them at their illegal mining site would be shot and killed.

According to police sources, the accused was arrested on August 26, 2025, at Sefwi Metemano in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.

He was arraigned before the Juaboso Magistrate Court, where the prosecution pressed two charges against him: causing fear and panic among security agencies in the performance of their lawful duties, and possession of a firearm without lawful authority.

The prosecution prayed the court to refuse bail, arguing that the accused could interfere with ongoing investigations, including efforts to apprehend his accomplices and retrieve the firearm used in the video.

When asked to respond to the charges, Amoako pleaded guilty and admitted ownership of the firearm. He told the court that he only displayed the weapon “for play,” and insisted he did not personally upload the video on TikTok. He pleaded for bail, promising to cooperate with the investigation.

The magistrate, however, declined the bail application, citing the seriousness of the offence and the risk of the accused interfering with investigations.

The court remanded Amoako into police custody and adjourned the case to September 15, 2025, for further hearing.

Meanwhile, illegal mining activities continue to rise in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.

Two friends remanded over robbery allegation https://www.adomonline.com/two-friends-remanded-over-robbery-allegation/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 10:48:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571666 Two friends have been remanded into prison custody by the Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti Region for allegedly robbing two brothers at Abuakwa-Sepaase, also in the municipality.

Albert Mensah, 18, unemployed, and Bismark Yeboah, an excavator operator’s apprentice, also 18, pleaded not guilty and will return before the court on September 12 this year.

Police Chief Inspector Evans Ayimbisa, prosecuting, told the court, presided over by Jephthah Appau, that Mensah and Yeboah are friends who reside at Sepaase and Adwafo, respectively, while the complainants, Alex Duah and Blessing Duah, are both tilers and tricycle (Pragyia) riders residing at Sepaase.

He said on August 18, at about midnight, the Duah brothers were discussing the fare with two ladies who wanted to hire their tricycle services to Abuakwa.

According to the prosecution, the accused approached the scene, demanded the victims’ mobile phones, and suddenly attacked Blessing, seizing his iPhone 11 Pro Max valued at GH¢2,600 and GH¢800 in cash. They then attempted to rob Alex, but Blessing intervened. Mensah allegedly pulled a kitchen knife and stabbed Alex in the back, leaving a deep cut, before both fled.

Some people nearby heard the victim screaming and rushed him to the Abuakwa Polyclinic. He was later transferred to Kwadaso SDA Hospital, where he was admitted for two days, treated, and discharged.

Mensah was arrested at his house in Sepaase, and Yeboah was handed over to the police by his relatives. In their caution statements, both men admitted to the crime. After further investigations, they were charged and brought before the court.

Stephen’s brother, Kwasi Amoako, confirmed the development in an interview with Accra-based Citi News, noting that he received the information from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer handling the case.

“Yesterday we went to court, and I can confirm that the third suspect has passed on. I was told by the Police CID, the one who is in charge of the case. We thank God that our brother has started seeking justice for himself,” Mr. Amoako stated.

The suspect’s death adds a new layer to an already sensitive case that has captured public attention since the officer’s killing.

Mr. Amoah’s family has repeatedly called for speedy and thorough investigations to ensure accountability and closure.

Police have yet to release an official statement confirming the incident.

Mr. Amoah was declared missing on July 3, 2025, after leaving his home to meet a friend at Ashongman Estate. His charred remains were later found on July 9 at Abuom Junction near Kwabenya, prompting an intensive police probe and manhunt, which led to the arrest of three suspects.

Ridge Hospital Assault: Perpetrators must face justice – Dr. Yankson https://www.adomonline.com/ridge-hospital-assault-perpetrators-must-face-justice-dr-yankson/ Sat, 23 Aug 2025 08:00:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570355 Former Vice President of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Justice Yankson, has called for the immediate prosecution of individuals involved in the recent assault on a medical practitioner at the Accra Ridge Hospital.

“We all saw the nurse and what happened to her. We heard her account; she was physically attacked. On that basis, whoever is involved should be in court by now,” he said.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, Dr Yankson expressed concern that the alleged perpetrators have not yet been put before the court.

He warned that failure to enforce the law in such cases undermines public confidence in the justice system and poses a grave threat to healthcare delivery.

“If people are let off the hook, then such abuses will continue to persist. The impunity with which people do things will continue,” he stressed.

Dr Yankson emphasised that while every citizen has the right to seek medical care, that right must not translate into abuse of health professionals.

“Your right to seek healthcare does not mean that, in the process, you will unleash all kinds of assault on the professional, whether verbal, physical, or emotional abuse,” he argued.

He reiterated that violence against health workers is unacceptable and called for swift, decisive legal action to protect medical professionals and uphold the rule of law.

Background

The assault occurred after a viral video showed relatives of an accident victim physically attacking staff in Ridge Hospital’s emergency department.

In response, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh visited the hospital to reassure healthcare workers, ordered tightened security, and launched an investigation.

A one-week committee has been tasked with probing the incident, administratively by the Ministry and criminally by the police, with public assurances that the law will take its course.
Arrests have already been confirmed, though details of suspects, including whether Ralph St. Williams, the instigator, is among them, remain undisclosed.

Assaulted Ridge Hospital nurse sues Ralph Williams  https://www.adomonline.com/assaulted-ridge-hospital-nurse-sues-ralph-williams/ Sat, 23 Aug 2025 07:08:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570306 A nurse at Ridge Hospital, Rejoice Tsotso Bortei, who was allegedly assaulted during a violent altercation with relatives of a patient on August 17, has filed a GH¢7 million lawsuit against social media commentator Ralph Saint Williams, popularly known as Ralph De Fellow Ghanaian.

In a Writ of Summons filed at the High Court in Accra on August 20, 2025, Miss Bortei is demanding GH¢5 million in damages for battery and an additional GH¢2 million for defamation.

According to her statement of claim, Ralph physically attacked her, leaving her with a dislocated shoulder and an injury to her hand, both of which have hampered her professional duties as a nurse.

The suit further alleges that Ralph defamed her by making disparaging remarks online, calling her a “liar” and accusing her of fabricating the extent of her injuries. In one post, he reportedly wrote:

“Liar, wo se wo nsam abu. Duabɔ bebam. You say you have suffered an injured hand and a dislocated shoulder. This is cooked up to cover the nonsense going on at the hospital,” the writ stated.

Bortei’s lawyers, led by Charles Delali Blagogee of Blagogee, Blacksword & Co., argue that these remarks have damaged her reputation, exposed her to public ridicule, and undermined her credibility as a health professional.

The reliefs being sought include a public apology and retraction of the defamatory statements in the same medium and prominence.

Also, a perpetual injunction restraining Williams from making further defamatory remarks, a 50-meter restraining order against the defendant, legal costs, and any additional relief deemed fit by the court.

Ralph has been ordered to enter an appearance within eight days of service, failing which the court may issue a default judgment.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has given a one-week deadline to a newly constituted committee to probe the incident and submit its report.

Mr. Akandoh has also pledged to cover all the medical bills of the nurse.

Immigration officer’s murder: Chaos as family accosts suspect’s lawyer at court premises https://www.adomonline.com/immigration-officers-murder-chaos-as-family-accosts-suspects-lawyer-at-court-premises/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 15:14:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570190 Tensions flared outside the Adabraka District Court in Accra after proceedings in the case involving the alleged killing of immigration officer, Stephen King Amoah, were adjourned.

The second accused, Thomas Zigah, was brought before the court on Friday.

During proceedings, counsel for the accused pleaded with the court to allow his client to seek medical attention at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital instead of the Police Hospital, insisting that the suspect’s condition appeared deteriorated while in custody at the Railway Police Station.

The Counsel claimed the suspect had red eyes and required urgent care at an independent medical facility.

The prosecution opposed the request, noting that the suspect had already been taken to the Police Hospital twice, where he was treated and discharged.

They argued that defence counsel had not formally specified why Korle Bu should be preferred over the Police Hospital.

The court agreed, ruling that if the suspect’s health was in jeopardy, a formal application would have to be filed to request a change of hospital.

Defence counsel further suggested a one-week adjournment, reasoning that the prosecution had indicated the accused would be taken to the hospital again for the third time, and therefore a medical report should be provided as evidence.

The prosecution, however, opposed the adjournment, arguing that investigations had extended beyond Accra’s jurisdiction, requiring investigators to travel, and it would not be possible to conclude inquiries within a week.

The court declined the application for Korle Bu treatment and refused the one-week adjournment. The case was subsequently adjourned to September 4, 2025.

However, immediately after the adjournment, chaos broke out as members of the deceased officer’s family, who had been waiting outside, confronted the defense lawyer.

The family, visibly agitated, attempted to attack him as he made his way to his car.

The situation quickly escalated, forcing police officers present at the scene to intervene.

In the confusion, the lawyer was briefly mobbed before being escorted back into the courtroom for his safety.

He was later escorted to his car under tight police security to prevent further confrontation.

Cybercrime crackdown: 39 arrested in joint CSA-CID operation in Tema https://www.adomonline.com/cybercrime-crackdown-39-arrested-in-joint-csa-cid-operation-in-tema/ Thu, 21 Aug 2025 14:05:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569802

A joint security operation by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has led to the arrest of 39 individuals at Adom City Estate in Tema Community 25, Greater Accra, in what officials describe as a major blow to cybercrime networks.

The suspects were picked up in the early hours of Thursday, August 21, following weeks of intelligence-led surveillance. Among those detained were three minors and a woman believed to be an escort linked to one of the alleged ringleaders.

According to law enforcement sources, the raid specifically targeted a residence suspected to be operating as a cyber fraud hub. The operation, carried out under tight security, resulted in the seizure of several digital devices, including laptops and mobile phones, which are now being examined for forensic evidence.

All 39 suspects have since been transferred to the CID Headquarters in Accra, where they will undergo further interrogation and profiling. Authorities assured that due process will be followed, particularly in handling the cases of the minors involved.

Officials from the CSA explained that the swoop forms part of a broader national campaign to combat online fraud, financial scams, and other internet-based crimes that continue to affect individuals and institutions across the country.

The CSA also urged the public to remain vigilant against suspicious online activities, while the CID reiterated its commitment to dismantling cybercrime syndicates nationwide.

This latest operation adds to a series of recent raids as security agencies intensify efforts to contain the growing threat of cyber-enabled criminal activities.

Chief, IT technician in court over alleged stolen car https://www.adomonline.com/chief-it-technician-in-court-over-alleged-stolen-car/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 07:38:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567276

Two persons have been put before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly stealing a Kia Forte from a rental service provider at New Bortianor.

Nana Abeka Anderson, an Information Technology (IT) technician, is said to have conspired with the Gyasihene of Gomoa Fete, Nana Kofi Baah I, to steal the car worth GH¢ 200,000.

According to court documents, Anderson rented the car with forged documents and gave it to Nana Baah I.

The two received GH¢16,000 from a third suspect, Yakubu, who has since gone into hiding with the car.

Anderson and Nana Baah have been jointly charged with conspiracy.

In addition to the charge of conspiracy, Anderson alone has been charged with a substantive charge of stealing and forgery.

The two, who are currently being investigated in connection with other vehicle theft cases, were remanded when they appeared before the court presided over by Basilia Adjei-Tawiah.

Prosecution’s facts

The facts as narrated by the prosecution led by Inspector (Insp.) Abigail Offeibea were that on March 10, 2025, Anderson contacted the complainant, who is engaged in car rental services, to rent the Kia Forte for two days.

According to the prosecution, the accused requested that the vehicle be delivered to his residence at Haatso, Accra.

On March 11 2025, the complainant delivered the car to Anderson at the exact location, where Anderson paid for a two-day rental.

The complainant, the prosecution said, requested a photocopy of Anderson’s Ghana Card and Driving Licence.

Anderson provided identification cards bearing the name Essel Kofi Elvis with his photograph on the ID cards.

“Upon the expiration of the rental period on March 13, 2025, the complainant attempted to contact Anderson multiple times, but his phone was switched off.”

“The complainant checked the vehicle’s tracking device, but unfortunately, it had been disabled by the accused,” Insp. Offeibea told the court.

Complaint

She added that on March 14, 2025, the complainant reported the matter to the police.

During the investigation, the prosecutor said the Accra Regional Criminal Investigations Department (RCID) received information that Anderson had been arrested in a related case at the CID Headquarters.

Based on this information, the Accra RCID took custody of Anderson for investigation.

“During interrogation, Anderson admitted to renting the vehicle from the complainant and failing to return it. He named Nana Baah I as his accomplice and stated that he handed the vehicle over to him at Kakraba.

“Nana Baah I was arrested and also admitted that Anderson brought the vehicle to him,” the prosecutor said.

She added that the accused person subsequently gave the car to Yakubu, who is currently at large, adding, “They received GH¢16,000.00 from Yakubu and shared the proceeds”.

The prosecutor said checks from DVLA and National Identification Authority (NIA) revealed the identity cards provided by Anderson in renting the car to be fake.

The accused persons, she said, had failed to assist the police in retrieving the vehicle in this case.

Suspect in immigration officer’s murder case remanded [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/suspect-in-immigration-officers-murder-case-remanded-video/ Sat, 09 Aug 2025 06:26:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2565215

A solemn atmosphere surrounded the Adabraka District Court on Friday, August 8, 2025, as the man accused of a heinous crime against Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah was remanded into police custody for two weeks.

Bright Aweh, the prime suspect, is believed to be the last person to have seen the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) officer alive before his disappearance and subsequent gruesome murder.

The case has been adjourned to August 22, 2025, as the Ghana Police Service intensifies its investigation.

The murder of 38-year-old Stephen King Amoah has shocked the nation and highlighted the pervasive issue of violent crime.

Amoah was reported missing on July 3 after leaving his home at Ashongman Estate to meet a friend. Five days later, his partially burnt body was discovered in a gutter at Abuom Junction, near Kwabenya.

The discovery of his charred remains marked a horrifying escalation in the case, which was initially treated as a kidnapping.

The reclassification of the case to murder reflects the gravity of the forensic evidence uncovered by the police.

In a plea for justice, the deceased’s sister, Vesta Amoah, spoke to the media outside the courtroom.

Her voice, thick with grief, resonated with the pain of a family shattered by tragedy.

“All that we’re asking is for justice to prevail. He was our lastborn. My mother is really broken; we are unable to eat or sleep. We’re full of pain. It’s always a foolish case; anytime someone is dead, we pray this time round justice will prevail.”

This case has drawn significant public attention, not only because of the victim’s profession but also due to the disturbing details revealed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

At a press briefing on Monday, August 4, 2025, the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, provided a timeline of events that painted a chilling picture of the crime.

According to COP Yaako, Amoah left his home on the night of July 3 after reportedly receiving photos of cash bundles from the suspect, Bright Aweh, who had promised to repay a debt.

When Amoah did not return home and his phone became unreachable, a missing person report was filed on July 4.

Police investigations quickly led them to Bright Aweh, who was arrested on July 6.

During interrogation, Aweh’s account was rife with inconsistencies.

He admitted to meeting Amoah and handing him GHC500,000 in cash, claiming GHC200,000 was to settle a debt and the rest was to be held by Amoah.

The dubious nature of this story and the unclear source of the money immediately raised red flags for investigators.

The discovery of Amoah’s burnt body on July 9 in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area provided a pivotal turning point. Subsequent forensic searches of Aweh’s residence and a secondary crime scene revealed a nightmare of evidence.

Inside the suspect’s residence, investigators found:

  • Blast stains (a forensic term for blood spatter) in the living room.
  • Signs of an attempted cleanup and freshly sprayed walls with an empty can of spray paint nearby.

The search expanded to a secondary crime scene, a crucial step in the investigation. There, police recovered:

  • A burnt woollen carpet stained with blood.
  • A partially burnt camouflage fabric.
  • A fufu pestle soaked in blood was found hidden in a bush about 100 metres from Aweh’s home.

Additionally, police impounded the suspect’s vehicle, which also had traces of blood.

All evidence has been sent for forensic analysis, and DNA samples from the deceased’s mother and son are being used for profiling to confirm the identity of the remains.

In addition to the bail sum, Alhassan is required to produce one surety who resides within the court’s jurisdiction in Tamale.

He is also mandated to report to the Yendi Divisional Police Command every Thursday at 3 pm.

Alhassan, who was represented by counsel Jawson Kwame, pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping, and assault under the Criminal Offences Act of 1960 (Act 29).

After a lengthy legal argument, the court admitted Alhassan to bail.

The court also ordered Alhassan to advise his co-accused, Checo Naa Abdul-Iddi, and other accomplices to appear voluntarily in court on the next adjourned date, September 3, 2025.

The court warned that it would not hesitate to issue bench warrants to enforce their appearance if they fail to comply.

Brief facts

It is the case of the prosecution that, on July 16, 2025, after the Gbambu Chief Mohammed Mahamadu was seen addressing a press conference challenging the authority of the overlord Yaa-Naa Abukari II in the Nanton chieftancy dispute, the accused alleged that the overlord is the one creating division since he installed a new Paramount chief for the area.

It said, days after the press conference, a viral video circulated on social media that showed four gunmen with AK-47s driving into his community, breaking into his residence at night, and abducting Gbambu Naa to an unknown location.

The prosecution said, on July 20, 2025, a viral video circulated on social media where the kidnap chief, Mohammed Mahamadu, was seen in an office being interrogated and assaulted in the company of the alleged accused person, Abdul-Fatawu and others.

The viral video generated a lot of tension within the Dagbon kingdom despite the allegation that the said chief used unprintable words on the overlord during the press conference in Nanton.

However, the IGP ordered a full-scale investigation into the abduction and assault of the Gbambu Chief.

Ghana Police Service Northern Regional Command launched a full-scale investigation after engaging the overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, Naa Abukari II, in the matter for the release of the chief.

The police interrogation with the victim and further investigation identified the key ringleaders as Registrar of Dagbon Traditional Council, Abdul-Fatawu, and Checo Naa Abdul-Iddi, who were the persons who authorised the kidnapping of the chief, with two others who are on the run.

The four accused persons were summoned on July 30, 2025, by the Northern police command in Tamale to assist in the investigation.

The Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Abdul-Fatawu, who honoured the summons, was charged and subsequently granted police-enquiring bail.

The accused was subsequently charged with the offence, and the court case was adjourned to September 3, 2025.

The 1st accused person, Alhassan Fatawu, met the bail conditions, and bail has been executed for him to reappear on 3/09/2025. Investigations continue to arrest the suspects at large.

Employee of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited convicted over cable theft https://www.adomonline.com/employee-of-samatex-timber-and-plywood-company-limited-convicted-over-cable-theft/ Wed, 06 Aug 2025 08:26:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2564012 The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced an employee of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited to five years imprisonment with hard labour.

This is for damaging and stealing electrical cables worth GH¢137,046 belonging to his employer.

Samuel Agyiri, 28, a pump mechanic, pleaded guilty to causing unlawful damage and stealing.

The prosecution, led by Police Detective Chief Inspector Adams Mumuni, told the court presided over by Mrs Hathia Ama Manu, that the complainant, Aziz Yakubu, is a security officer of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited.

He said the complainant resided in Samreboi No. 2 quarters, while Agyiri lived close to the Samreboi Gyantima road, both in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality.

Detective Chief Inspector Mumuni, on March 11, 2025, at about 0900 hours, Peter Adakabilla, the manager in charge of the company’s powerhouse, saw Agyiri roaming around the place within the powerhouse called ‘bars,’ where electrical cables were connected to the facility.

The Prosecution said that when the manager asked Agyiri about his mission there, he said he was not doing anything, so he was reassigned to go and work at the hogging yard.

On the same day at about 1430 hours, the manager saw Agyiri again loitering around the powerhouse and warned him to leave the premises and go home as he had already closed for the day.

He said about 15:15 hours, while the manager was at the hogging yard working, he saw Agyiri pushing a wheelbarrow towards the factory fence near the moulding mill and suspected he had stolen something he ordered him to stop.

Detective Chief Inspector Mumuni said, knowing that he would be arrested, Agyiri abandoned the wheelbarrow, picked an item and wrapped it with a polythene bag and made a swift exit.

The manager quickly contacted the complainant on the phone, and he pursued Agyiri using a motorbike and managed to arrest him.

Prosecution said the convict then confessed to the complainant that he had stolen some cables and led him to a nearby bush where they were retrieved.

Agyiri was handed over to the Samreboi police, where he admitted the offence in his caution statement and claimed financial difficulties compelled him to steal.

During the ruling, the judge directed the police to hand over the items they had retrieved to the company.

Two sisters arrested for staging abduction with help of married boyfriend https://www.adomonline.com/two-sisters-arrested-for-staging-abduction-with-help-of-married-boyfriend/ Tue, 05 Aug 2025 19:25:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563834 The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested four individuals over a staged kidnapping aimed at extorting five million naira (₦5,000,000) from a man by his two daughters and their accomplices.

Confirming the arrests, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, said the incident was reported on July 30, 2025, by one Mr. Innocent, a resident of Jikwoyi Phase II.

According to her, Mr. Innocent informed the Jikwoyi Police Division that his 16-year-old daughter, Miss Lead Way Innocent, had left home on July 18, 2025, to sit for an examination at Government Secondary School, Karu, Abuja, but never returned.

He later received a phone call from unknown persons demanding a ransom for her release.

“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jikwoyi Division immediately launched a discreet investigation,” SP Adeh stated.

“Through coordinated intelligence gathering and digital tracking, the phone number used to contact the complainant was traced to a residence in Jikwoyi Phase II. Operatives proceeded to the location, where Miss Lead Way Innocent was found in the company of one Mrs. Tina Mayowa, the wife of Mr. Mayowa Adedeji. The two were seen eating and conversing freely, showing no signs of distress.”

Further investigations led to the arrest of Miss Joy Innocent, elder sister of the alleged victim, and her boyfriend, Mr. Mayowa Adedeji.

Police findings revealed that Joy conspired with her boyfriend—who is legally married to Mrs. Tina Mayowa—to fake the kidnapping of her younger sister in a calculated attempt to defraud their father.

It was also discovered that Lead Way Innocent was not only aware of the plan but actively participated in it. She willingly stayed with the suspects throughout the period of her supposed abduction, while Joy remained at home, pretending to be unaware of her sister’s whereabouts, as their father frantically tried to raise the ransom.

The suspects are currently in custody and assisting the police with further investigations.

The arrests, made between May and July 2025, included 47 foreign nationals and 18 Ghanaians. Key operations were carried out in Sogakope, Dodowa, Sassabi Ubuntu Estate, Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, and Teshie-Nungua.

Mr Divine Selase Agbeti, Acting Director-General of the CSA, disclosed at a joint press briefing that 23 of the 25 suspects arrested at Dodowa were identified as victims of human trafficking and repatriated.

Thirteen of the 16 suspects arrested at Bortianor are also being processed for repatriation, while investigations continue into the 13 foreigners and one Ghanaian arrested at Teshie-Nungua.

“The Teshie-Nungua’s Ghanaian suspect is also being investigated and will be made to face the law when found culpable,” Mr Agbeti stated.

Police retrieve 43 stolen luxurious cars shipped to Ghana https://www.adomonline.com/police-retrieve-43-stolen-luxurious-cars-shipped-to-ghana/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 12:58:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563295 The Ghana Police Service has recovered 43 luxury vehicles stolen from abroad and illegally shipped into the country between January and July 2025.

The vehicles, which include high-end brands such as Rolls-Royce, Audi, Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, were reportedly stolen from countries in Europe and North America.

At a press briefing in Accra on Monday, August 4, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed the recoveries, attributing the success to enhanced collaboration with both local and international partners.

“The administration has stepped up efforts to fight vehicle crime by working in close collaboration with other national agencies, including the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and international partners like INTERPOL and the FBI,” she said.

She noted that intelligence-sharing had been instrumental in tracking the stolen vehicles and exposing the smuggling networks behind them.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle theft syndicates are linked to broader transnational crimes such as identity theft, insurance fraud, visa card fraud, and money laundering.

“This highlights Ghana’s growing role in global criminal supply chains—often as a destination or transit point for illicit goods,” COP Donkor added.

The recovered vehicles were traced to at least seven countries: the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Canada, the USA, Germany, Italy, and France.

She referenced INTERPOL’s Operation Safe Wheels, conducted in late 2024 and early 2025 across 12 West African nations, which identified over 150 stolen vehicles—many traced to Ghana.

Of the 43 vehicles recovered, investigations into 18 have been completed. The courts have ordered that those cars be returned to their countries of origin. So far, eight have been repatriated, while 10 await final procedures. The remaining 25 cases are still under judicial review.

“It is important to note that for every vehicle impounded, thorough investigations are carried out, and importers are given the opportunity to provide proof of ownership or purchase from the country of origin,” she stressed.

However, COP Donkor expressed concern that in nearly all the cases, individuals who cleared the vehicles in Ghana failed to provide such documentation.

“It is sad to note that in almost all the cases mentioned above, those who clear the vehicles in Ghana are unable to provide proof of ownership or purchase of the vehicles from the country of origin,” she said.

She cautioned that payment of customs duties does not equate to legitimate acquisition.

“Let me indicate here that payment of customs duties in Ghana does not mean that the vehicle was legitimately acquired from the country of origin,” she warned.

The CID revealed that criminals often use sophisticated techniques such as altering Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) and falsifying ownership records to avoid detection.

The operation between the CID, Customs Division, INTERPOL, and the FBI remains ongoing as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle Ghana’s role as a hub for stolen vehicles.

Ex-convict teacher sentenced to 48 years for defilement https://www.adomonline.com/ex-convict-teacher-sentenced-to-48-years-for-defilement/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 10:36:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563242 An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Sokah Phidels Load, a 47-year-old teacher and ex-convict, to 48 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after he was found guilty of defiling a seven-year-old girl.

The presiding judge, Mr. G.A. Inkumsah-Ishum, found Sokah guilty after a full trial. Sokah had pleaded not guilty.

According to the prosecution led by Police Chief Inspector Edna Aningah, the convict has a history of similar criminal behaviour.

The prosecutor noted that in 2011, Sokah was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for defilement, which was later reduced to 15 years on appeal, a sentence he completed in 2020.

Despite his past conviction, he secured employment in a basic school without the school being aware of his criminal background.

Case background

According to the prosecutor, the complainant is the father of the victim and lives with his daughter in Accra.

She added that Sokah, who lived on the school’s premises, had been employed at the victim’s school for just three weeks.

“On February 6, 2025, at around 7.15 a.m., the victim’s father dropped her off at school. Sokah, who was then in his office located at the Administrator’s Block, observed the girl entering the common hall to place her drink in the school’s fridge.

He called her to his office under false pretences,” she explained.

The prosecutor stated that when the victim entered Sokah’s office, he asked her to show him her panty, which she did, afterwards he took the victim to the teachers’ washroom and instructed her to sit on the water closet and angrily asked her to remove her panty and cover her face, which she did with her uniform but peeped to watch him.

She added that the convict then opened his flap, knelt and inserted his finger and penis into the victim’s private part, leading to her screaming for help.

Sokah, however, covered her mouth and warned her not to tell anyone else, he would cane her, but the victim later confided in another pupil who was the sister of her classmate. That pupil then reported the incident to school authorities.

She said that the school promptly called the victim to the director’s office at the close of school, where she recounted her experience in the presence of her father.

The prosecutor said that upon realising the matter had been reported, Sokah fled the school premises and went into hiding.

“A complaint was then lodged with the police, and the victim was issued a medical form and taken for examination at a hospital.”

Chief Inspector Aningah told the court that efforts to reach Sokah proved unsuccessful until later, when he sent a voice note to the school, acknowledging that he had heard the police were searching for him, but he still refused to surrender.

The prosecutor added that the police eventually traced his hideout at Santeo, a community in Accra.

She stated that surveillance with his identification card was then mounted in the neighbourhood, leading to his arrest on March 13, 2025.

“After a thorough investigation, Sokah was charged with the offence and brought before the court,” the prosecutor stated.

NPP Chairman’s brother shot dead during robbery in his home https://www.adomonline.com/npp-chairmans-brother-shot-dead-during-robbery-in-his-home/ Mon, 04 Aug 2025 07:56:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2563124 The Ghana Police Service has refuted media reports claiming that officers raided the home of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Bono East Regional Chairman, Ibrahim Baba Bukari, resulting in the death of one person.

In an official statement, the Service described the reports as false and clarified that no such raid had taken place.

According to the police, the Bono East Regional Command responded to intelligence about a robbery attempt around 1:20 am on Friday, August 1, 2025.

During the operation, one of the suspects—later identified as Seidu Bukari, the brother of Baba Bukari—was shot while attempting to escape. He was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The police described the deceased as a known member of a robbery syndicate responsible for terrorising residents of Techiman and surrounding communities, primarily by stealing motorbikes for resale in Kumasi.

He was also reportedly wanted in connection with a prior robbery case under investigation.

According to the statement, the gang had returned to Techiman that night to carry out another robbery when officers intercepted them.

“Officers retrieved a motorbike and other tools believed to have been used in the attempted crime. A manhunt has since been launched for the other suspects who fled the scene,” the statement noted.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special team from the CID Headquarters, the Police Professional Standards Bureau, and the Police Intelligence Directorate to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

Nigerian jailed for faking identity to get Ghanaian passport https://www.adomonline.com/nigerian-jailed-for-faking-identity-to-get-ghanaian-passport/ Wed, 30 Jul 2025 09:02:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561320 The Tema District Court has sentenced a Nigerian national to 12 months’ imprisonment with hard labour for attempting to unlawfully acquire a Ghanaian passport.

Mohammed Ogbona, alias Mohammed Alhassan, was also convicted on additional charges of unlawful entry and the fraudulent acquisition of a Ghanaian birth certificate and National Identification Card.

Presiding judge, Madam Benedicta Antwi, handed down the sentence after Ogbona pleaded guilty. He was fined 200 penalty units (GH₵2,400.00) each for attempting to obtain a Ghanaian passport and a National ID through false declarations.

In default of payment, he is to serve six months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

For acquiring a Ghanaian birth certificate through false declaration, the court sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment. He was also fined 400 penalty units (GH₵4,800.00) or, in default, serve an additional three months’ imprisonment.

An additional fine of 50 penalty units (GH₵600.00) was imposed, with a one-month prison term in default. All sentences are to run concurrently.

The prosecution, led by Inspector Jerry Foster Segbefia and supported by ASI Gillian Biney, told the court that the 32-year-old factory hand at Cimaf Cement was arrested on 16 June 2025 at the Tema Passport Application Centre during the passport application process, following suspicions regarding his nationality.

Ogbona had claimed to be a Ghanaian named Mohammed Alhassan, born at Tema General Hospital to Ghanaian parents — Alhassan Varga, a former military officer, and Rose Tetteh. However, he failed to provide evidence or lead investigators to the said parents.

Subsequent investigations revealed that he was born in Enugu State, Nigeria, to John and Rosemary Ogbona, and no birth record existed for him at the Tema General Hospital.

“He wanted the Ghanaian passport to travel to the United Kingdom for greener pastures,” Inspector Segbefia stated.

The court heard that Ogbona had engaged an agent to falsify his identity and had successfully secured a Ghanaian birth certificate (entry number 774) and a Ghana Card (ID number GHA-730706520-0) before booking an online passport application.

Further investigations established that he had entered Ghana through an unauthorised route near the Aflao border, without travel documents or immigration clearance.

Inspector Segbefia said that following a thorough investigation, Ogbona was arraigned, and the prosecution called for a custodial sentence to serve as a deterrent to the growing trend of identity fraud and unlawful entry.

Nigeria kidnappers kill 35 hostages even after ransom paid https://www.adomonline.com/nigeria-kidnappers-kill-35-hostages-even-after-ransom-paid/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 15:33:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2561117 Kidnappers in Nigeria have killed at least 35 people they abducted from a village in northern Zamfara state despite ransoms being paid for their release, a local official told the BBC.

In recent years, criminal gangs in the region, known in the country as bandits, have taken to kidnapping people as a means to raise money.

In this incident, 56 people were taken from Banga village, Kauran Namoda local government area in March. The gunmen then demanded a ransom of one million naira ($655; £485) per captive, media in Nigeria report.

Local government chairman Manniru Haidara Kaura said that most of those killed were young people who “were slaughtered like rams”.

“What happened was that the bandits demanded ransom money, and after some back-and-forth, they were given what they asked for. They then released 18 people, including 17 women and one young boy, on Saturday,” Haidara added.

“Only they [the gunmen] know why they killed them. They are senseless and heartless people. They forget that they are killing their own brothers, and we will all meet before Allah.”

Residents said three pregnant women who were among the hostages gave birth while in captivity, but all the new-borns died due to lack of care.

Survivors recounted being forced to witness the brutal killing of fellow hostages before being allowed to leave the forest.

Sixteen of those released on Saturday are in hospital receiving treatment, while the bodies of the 38 killed by the bandits are unlikely to be returned as in these cases corpses are rarely released.

In a statement, the Zamfara government condemned the killings calling them “barbaric and cowardly” and declared that such atrocities added to its resolve to wipe out terrorism from the state.

“To the grieving families, we share your sorrow and pray for strength and healing. To the good people of Zamfara, remain united and vigilant. Report suspicious activities, and together, we will defeat evil.”

The government has said that the killers would be brought to justice.

In an attempt to curb the spiralling and lucrative kidnapping industry, a law was enacted in 2022 making it a crime to make ransom payments. It carries a jail sentence of at least 15 years; however, no-one has ever been arrested on those charges.

It also made abduction punishable by death in cases where victims die.

But families often feel forced to pay to save their loved ones, citing the government’s inability to ensure their safety.

Pastor in court over alleged assassination prophecy about Shatta Wale https://www.adomonline.com/pastor-in-court-over-alleged-assassination-prophecy-about-shatta-wale/ Tue, 29 Jul 2025 06:44:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2560742 A pastor has appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly publishing a prophecy on TikTok about the assassination of popular Ghanaian musician Shatta Wale.

Reverend Daniel Yaw Donkoh, also known as D.Y. Donkoh, was charged with the publication of false news. He pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Basit, granted him bail in the sum of GHC20,000 with three sureties, one to be justified. He is to report to the police every two weeks.

The case has been adjourned to August 27, 2025, for a Case Management Conference.

Arguing for bail, Donkoh’s counsel said the accused is a family man with four children and a known resident who founded a church at Israel, Tabora in Accra. The counsel noted that Donkoh had cooperated with the police and posed no risk of interfering with investigations.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Kwadwo Aboagye told the court that the complainant, Charles Nii Armah Junior, popularly known as Shatta Wale, is a musician and businessman residing in East Legon, Accra.

On July 21, 2025, Shatta Wale’s Public Relations Manager, Samuel Baah Atuobi, also known as Sammy Flex, reported to the police that a day earlier, the team had come across a TikTok video in which Donkoh claimed he had seen a vision of Shatta Wale being assassinated by three armed men.

The prosecution said the viral video left Shatta Wale traumatised and living in fear.

Police attempts to contact Donkoh were initially unsuccessful. However, on July 25, 2025, the police received intelligence that some angry fans of Shatta Wale were planning to storm Donkoh’s church at Tabora Alhaji in protest.

To prevent any disturbance, officers proceeded to the church and invited Donkoh for questioning.

“During investigations, the accused stated that he posted the video on his TikTok page regarding the alleged assassination to get the complainant’s attention,” the prosecution added.

Police suspect the two AK-47-wielding men trailed the Toyota minibus from its Adehyie Market station to the spot near the local Church of Pentecost building before firing indiscriminately at the bus.

Police suspect the attack may be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict.

The deceased has been identified as Abiola, but the injured military officer is yet to be identified.

Crime scene investigators from the Ashanti North Regional Police Command picked up fourteen spent shells at the scene.

Final-Year Wa AMASS student stabbed during dispute with colleague https://www.adomonline.com/final-year-wa-amass-student-stabbed-during-dispute-with-colleague/ Wed, 23 Jul 2025 08:48:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2558721 A final-year student of Wa T.I Ahmadiyya Senior High School (Wa Amass) is in critical condition after being stabbed during a confrontation with a colleague on campus Tuesday night.

According to eyewitness accounts, the incident followed a heated altercation between two final-year students, Iddrisu Ibrahim, popularly known as Lincoln, and his friend Hafis, also known as Baayaawa.

Lincoln, a Year 3 Agricultural Science student from Bulenga, had reportedly recorded a video of Hafis without his consent. Hafis, a Year 3 General Arts student from Bawku, confronted Lincoln and demanded that the video be deleted.

When Lincoln allegedly refused to comply, Hafis is said to have threatened to stab him. Witnesses claimed Lincoln dismissed the threat and challenged Hafis to act on it.

The situation escalated when Hafis allegedly pulled a knife and stabbed Lincoln in the ribs and stomach.

Following the attack, Hafis attempted to flee, but the incident quickly spread across campus. Some students reportedly mobilised for retaliation, but police arrived swiftly to restore order.

Officers arrested Hafis and placed him in custody for questioning.

Despite severe injuries, Lincoln managed to stagger from the hostel area towards the school library before collapsing.

A female student who witnessed the incident said, “When Lincoln came out, the knife was still stuck in him. Some students removed it before rushing him to the hospital.”

Lincoln is currently receiving treatment at the Wa Regional Hospital. Medical staff have described his condition as critical but stable.

Police investigations are ongoing. School authorities have not yet released an official statement, but security presence on campus has been significantly increased to forestall any further disturbances.
