According to Sylvia Awumey, a journalist based in Ketu South, the incident occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday.

She reported that the deceased, Christopher Ahordo, popularly known in the area as Colombo, had unusually extended his working hours beyond his typical 5:00 p.m. closing time under unclear circumstances.

Eyewitnesses stated that while Colombo was in the process of closing his mobile money (MoMo) shop at about 6:15 p.m., two men dressed in long robes, with their faces covered and wielding pump-action guns, approached him.

They seized a bag believed to contain money, and as they were leaving the scene, one of the robbers shot him in the left side of his chest.

Colombo is said to have died at the scene. Witnesses indicated they were unable to assist him immediately, as the assailants were firing indiscriminately while fleeing into a nearby bush.

The incident reportedly occurred at Gbagblakope, near the Diamond Cement Factory in Aflao.

According to Sylvia, residents retrieved the body and conveyed it to the Ketu South Municipal Hospital mortuary.

The matter has since been reported to the municipal police, who are now handling the investigation.

MoMo robberies have become a common occurrence in Ghana, with several people losing their lives. This year alone, multiple incidents have been reported in the Ashanti Region, with fatalities recorded.

Keta: Police destroy 24 bags of suspected cannabis https://www.adomonline.com/keta-police-destroy-24-bags-of-suspected-cannabis/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 10:45:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2529463

The Keta Divisional Police Command in the Volta Region has destroyed 24 maxim bags of suspected cannabis at Adzido in the municipality.

The suspected weed was intercepted on December 29, 2023, and was later destroyed on Friday, April 25, 2025.

Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Maxwell Agyemang, Keta Divisional Police Commander, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

He stated that the suspected cannabis was intercepted at Adzido beach, where unknown culprits had dumped it.

“We had a tip-off about the suspect who dumped the cannabis at Adzido, and we intercepted it. Unfortunately, no arrest was made,” he said.

Superintendent Agyemang explained that a series of investigations were conducted in and around the Keta Municipality to apprehend and punish the culprits, but no one has since been identified in connection with the act to face the full rigor of the law.

He said that each of the 24 bags of suspected cannabis contained 30 wrapped pieces, with each estimated to cost around GH₵500, totaling GH₵360,000 for 720 pieces.

“The last time we conducted a similar exercise was on September 27, 2024, after we intercepted 78 maxim bags of marijuana at the same location upon a tip-off.”

Superintendent Agyemang said the Keta Divisional Command had previously held a meeting with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Wisdom Seade, to organize a comprehensive education program on drug abuse and addiction in the communities, so the public could identify the side effects of drug abuse.

He said further information gathered indicated that many young students in senior and junior high schools have been engaging in drugs such as tramadol, tamaking, and cannabis, which destroys their future progression.

He emphasized that the use of illicit drugs was against the laws of the country and promised that the Keta police command would do everything possible to crack down on the use of illicit drugs among the youth within the municipality.

He urged the public to report any act of illegal drug use that could jeopardize or endanger others in the communities.

Madam Elaina Annor-Agyapong, the Senior Narcotic Drugs Control Officer at Aflao, who witnessed the exercise, said that the consequences of using hard drugs include sickness, mental disorder, death, and imprisonment.

She urged the youth to desist from using such unprescribed drugs for a successful and brighter future.

Two remanded over human trafficking https://www.adomonline.com/two-remanded-over-human-trafficking/ Thu, 17 Apr 2025 09:31:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526268 Two individuals who allegedly trafficked three persons from Nigeria to Ghana and forced them into prostitution have appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Chidemma Nweke, also known as Mama, a 24-year-old sex worker, and Mercy Francis, a 27-year-old trader, are accused of luring the victims from Nigeria under the pretext of securing them jobs.

The accused were arrested by a team of police officers at Asuogya Krobo in Wassa Akropong in the Western North Region.

They are facing charges of abetment of crime to wit human trafficking, and human trafficking. Nweke is alleged to have trafficked one victim, while Francis, also known as Blessing or Gina, allegedly trafficked two.

Both have pleaded not guilty. The court, presided over by Mrs. Christina Cann, remanded them into lawful custody to reappear on April 29, 2025.

Meanwhile, two of their alleged accomplices, identified as Favour and Blessing, are currently at large.

According to the prosecution, the complainant is Chief Calistus Eloziepuwa, President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in Ghana. The accused, both Nigerian nationals, were residing at Wassa Akropong.

On April 7, 2025, Chief Eloziepuwa and victim Favour Chinecherem reported the case to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters. They explained that a good Samaritan had helped Favour escape from the traffickers while en route to Accra.

During interrogation, Favour disclosed that more victims were being held captive at Asuogya Krobo in Wassa Akropong and identified all four suspects.

On April 10, 2025, a team from the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit, led by the Station Officer, conducted an operation in Wassa Akropong. Six additional victims were rescued, and the two accused were arrested.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Nweke had recruited and transported Favour from Nigeria to Ghana under the pretense of offering her work in a boutique. Upon arrival, however, Nweke confined her in a brothel at Asuogya Krobo and forced her into prostitution, collecting the proceeds.

Later, Mercy Francis, who managed the brothel and a drinking spot called Royal City Pub, advised Nweke to sell the victim. Mercy allegedly introduced buyers, including another individual named Favour (the third accused) and one Blessing (the fourth accused). The victim was reportedly sold for GH¢5,000.

Following the sale, Mercy received GH¢500 as her share, which she used to paint the pub.

Prosecutors said investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.

IT technician jailed 6 months for defrauding auto mechanic https://www.adomonline.com/it-technician-jailed-6-months-for-defrauding-auto-mechanic/ Thu, 17 Apr 2025 06:39:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526211 The Kaneshie District Court One has sentenced Gideon Kojo Elliam, 37, to six months in hard labour for defrauding an auto mechanic of GH₵53,000.00.

Elliam took the money from the complainant, Mr. Daniel Odoi Otu, under the pretext of supplying him with an auto diagnostic machine but failed to deliver the equipment.

He admitted to the charge and was sentenced accordingly.

During the trial, Elliam confessed to receiving GH₵37,000.00 from Otu but disputed the complainant’s total claim of GH₵53,000.00.

The Court advised Otu to pursue civil action against Elliam to recover the outstanding amount once the convict serves his sentence.

Presenting the facts, Police Chief Inspector Achana Apeweh told the Court that the complainant, Otu — an auto mechanic residing at Kasoa Nyayano — gave Elliam, an IT technician from Takoradi, GH₵53,000.00 in May 2023 to purchase the auto diagnostic machine.

Elliam promised to deliver the equipment by December 2023 but failed, and all efforts by Otu to reach him proved futile.

Chief Inspector Apeweh said Elliam was later arrested at his hideout on April 1, 2025.

During police investigations, Elliam admitted to using the money for personal purposes. He was subsequently charged and arraigned before the court.

Daniel Ayetey, 38, pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence.

The court, presided over by Isaac Addo, adjourned the case to May 14, 2025, and instructed the prosecution to ensure full disclosure of evidence before the next hearing.

According to Police Chief Inspector Josephine Lamptey, the complainant, Bright Oduro, a mechanic based in La, had been searching for a container to rent for his wife in February 2025.

During his search, an agent identified as Leonard Dunyo introduced Oduro to Ayetey, who allegedly claimed he had a container available for rent. Both parties settled on a two-year advance payment of GH¢16,000.

The complainant subsequently paid GH¢11,000 to Ayetey and spent an additional GH¢8,000 on renovation materials for the container.

Feeling defrauded, the complainant lodged a report with the police, which led to Ayetey’s arrest and prosecution.

Ex-convict held for alleged sodomy and death threats https://www.adomonline.com/ex-convict-held-for-alleged-sodomy-and-death-threats/ Tue, 08 Apr 2025 07:10:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2522772 An Accra Circuit Court has remanded Abdul Razak, 55, an ex-convict, for allegedly engaging in anal sex with a 13-year-old boy.

Razak, also known as Nii Atofotse, faces additional charges of threatening death and stealing, all of which he denied.

Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru informed the court, presided over by Enid Marful-Sau, that the complainant is a trader and the guardian of the victim, a Junior High School student.

The court was also told that Razak, an ex-convict, resides in Manhean, while the complainant and the victim’s parents are neighbors in Accra.

The prosecution stated that the victim often spent time at the complainant’s house due to his parents’ busy schedules.

On January 7, 2025, around 1300 hours, the victim was sent to deliver a laptop computer and a charger to his brother.

The complainant was at home when he received a phone call from the victim’s father, informing him that the victim had damaged someone’s car.

The caller allegedly demanded GH¢500.00, threatening to report the incident to the Adabraka Police Station if the money was not paid.

The complainant was instructed to go to the police station to assist the victim.

The court heard that the complainant complied and went to the police station, but did not find the victim there.

The complainant then returned home and searched the entire area but was unable to locate either the victim or the caller.

Later, the victim returned home and, when questioned, revealed to the complainant that Razak had approached him while he was on his way back after delivering the laptop computer and charger.

According to the prosecution, Razak asked whether the charger the victim was carrying was a phone charger, and the victim clarified that it was a laptop charger.

Razak then pulled a knife from his pocket, lured the victim into an unfinished building at Odumase, and asked for the victim’s parents’ phone number.

He used the number to call the victim’s father and demanded GH¢500 from him.

Razak also threatened the victim with the knife, forcing him to tell his father that he had indeed damaged his car.

He then ordered the victim to perform oral sex on him.

The prosecution further stated that after becoming erect, Razak sat on a cement block in the uncompleted building and commanded the victim to sit on his manhood.

When the victim attempted to have anal sex with him, he was unable to penetrate.

Razak then made the victim bend over and inserted his finger in the boy’s anus for some time before forcing his manhood into the victim’s rear to engage in anal sex.

After the act, Razak took the laptop charger from the victim, searched his pockets, and stole GH¢50.00.

The prosecution also reported that Razak threatened the victim, saying there were three marks on his arm and that if the victim informed anyone about the incident, the marks would reveal it to him, and he would come after the victim to kill him.

Later, the court heard that Razak took the victim to a nearby provision store, where he bought a drink and sachet water for him before leaving.

The prosecution stated that on March 5, 2025, Razak was spotted near the victim’s school.

The victim raised the alarm, leading to Razak’s arrest. The complainant was promptly informed.

The court was told that during investigations at the Amasaman Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Razak was found to have been involved in a similar crime in March 2017.

He was freed from Nsawam Prison in November 2024.

The prosecution stated that a Police medical report form was issued to the complainant to facilitate the victim’s hospital examination, treatment, and subsequent report.

On March 7, 2025, the endorsed medical report form was submitted by the complainant.

Following this, the accused was cautioned and later arraigned after thorough investigations.

Painter accused of stealing BoG cables granted GH₵1 million bail https://www.adomonline.com/painter-accused-of-stealing-bog-cables-granted-gh%e2%82%b51-million-bail/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 09:29:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2521672 A painter accused of stealing electrical cables at the Bank of Ghana building in Ridge has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

Ahmed Mohammed Lawal was admitted to bail in the sum of GH₵1 million with two sureties. The presiding judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, also ordered the Prosecution to comply with the rules of disclosure. The case has been adjourned to May 7, 2025.

Lawal faces charges of unlawful entry and stealing electrical cables worth GH₵1,035,500, a charge he denies.

Earlier, the Prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agustin Kingsley Oppong, informed the Court that the complainants—Samuel Nii Tettey, a safety officer, and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, an electrical engineer—were employees at the Bank of Ghana’s new building, which was under construction.

According to the Prosecution, on February 16, 2025, the complainants discovered that someone had broken into the Energy Farm at the construction site and stolen a quantity of copper cables, specifically 1c x240 and 1c x300 square cables, valued at GH₵1,035,500.

The Prosecution explained that the discovery led to a review of the site’s Close-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, which showed Lawal and two others stealing the cables. The bundles of electrical cables were stored at the site.

The complainants apprehended Lawal and handed him over to the police. Investigations revealed that the accused and two accomplices, who remain at large, accessed the Energy Farm via a scaffold. They used a sharp object to cut the cables and remove them.

Further investigations showed that Lawal sold the stolen cables to a buyer at Kwame Nkrumah Circle and received GH₵2,000 for his share.

Despite being unable to lead the police to arrest his accomplices or the alleged “dishonest receiver,” Lawal is facing serious charges in connection with the theft.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Sulemana and Iddrisu Basit, both driver’s mates of an articulated truck, were arrested on April 1, 2025, at Gomoa Awombrew in the Central Region.

The truck, with registration number GC 7410-11, was found parked with 28 rims of ECG cables onboard.

According to a statement from the Police, ECG officials, led by their Operations Officer, David Ackom, confirmed the cables’ ownership but noted that no such consignment was expected in the area.

The truck remains under police guard at Gomoa Awombrew while efforts are underway to arrest the truck driver, Zibo Imoro, who is currently on the run.

This development comes amid growing controversy surrounding the disappearance of over 1,300 containers of ECG items at the Tema Port. Following an intelligence-led operation by National Security, 14 individuals, including four Ghanaians and 10 Chinese nationals, have been arrested and are assisting with investigations.

In an interview with Adom News, an eyewitness, Mohamed Osman revealed that the groups had disputes before the fasting period.

According to Osman, there were rumors three days before the carnival about a possible confrontation, prompting elders to intervene and urge restraint.

However, one of the groups disregarded the elders’ advice and instigated chaos during the event.

One person has since been arrested in connection with the violence and currently being detained at Kasoa Central Business District CBD Police Command.

Upon his arrest, the Police retrieved hammer and other offensive weapons from him.

14 arrested over missing ECG containers at port https://www.adomonline.com/14-arrested-over-missing-ecg-containers-at-port/ Sat, 29 Mar 2025 15:31:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2520062 National Security, leading investigations into the missing containers of goods and materials belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has arrested 14 persons.

They are made up of 10 foreign nationals and four Ghanaians.

This came to light on Friday, March 28 when the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, visited the premises of Dangfang Company Ltd and Ponlok Manufacturing Company Ltd, near Shai Hills in the Greater Accra Region, as well as a warehouse at Kpone, to ascertain the quantity of missing cables uncovered by National Security.

“We will pursue and prosecute anyone found culpable over the missing 1,300 shipping containers and their contents belonging to the ECG,” the minister said.

Mr Jinapor added that the ministry would not hesitate also to secure a court order to sell the assets of persons and companies apprehended, after their prosecution in court to defray the cost of the items, and invest the proceeds in the national electricity grid to make power delivery more reliable.

At Dangfang Company Ltd and Ponlok Manufacturing Company Ltd, the minister, in the company of officials of the ministry, were conducted round the smelter and its warehouses, where cable drums and cables labelled as property of ECG were being smelted and converted to aluminum rods for export.

At Kpone, the minister was shown a large warehouse containing cables suspected to belong to the ECG.

Mr Jinapor said a committee set up to investigate containers packed at the Tema Port on his assumption of office this year, indicated that over 1,300 containers could not be accounted for, for which the security agencies were alerted and their investigation led to the discovery of some cables in those factories.

Some of the aluminium rods produced at the DangFang Company using smeltered cables

He said preliminary investigations had shown that the disappearances, orchestrated by a syndicate, had been happening since 2019.

The Energy and Green Transition Minister said he was resolute in breaking the syndicate, stressing that “we would chase everybody and pursue every organisation that has been operating this cartel.”

Mr Jinapor added: “Clearly, as you can see, these are ECG cables, they are meant to be used by ECG but they end up in these factories and then they smelter them and produce aluminum rods, that is criminal.”

The Energy Minister condemned attempts by a section of the public playing politics with the matter, stressing that as the minister he had sworn an oath to ensure that the right thing was done.

“And so let me make it clear. Those who think that they can engage in political football, those who think they can use this to try and equalise,  it will not work,” Mr Jinapor said.

“Since 2019, this crime is being perpetrated on the state. As a minister, I would ensure that we curtail this, we will follow and apprehend those responsible, and retrieve the containers. In simple terms, I want my containers. Wherever the containers are, we will trace them,” he stated.

Mr Jinapor, who is also the Member of Parliament for Yapei Kusagwu, said with support from security agencies, the ministry would pursue the perpetrators and ensure that they were brought to book.

“We will do everything we can to trace these containers because they have serial numbers, they have manifests; and we would ensure that the law takes its course,” he assured.

Mr Jinapor disclosed that in 2014, ECG’s planned procurement was $1.397 billion. However, by the end of the year, it had procured $8.2 billion worth of goods.

Some of the alleged missing cables found on the premises of one of the factories at Shai Hills

Similarly in 2023, the company planned to procure less than $1 billion worth of items, but ended up procuring $8.3 billion. In 2024, the company procured $8.2 billion, way above what was approved for them, he explained.

“So, they engage in frivolous over-expenditure, procure items that they do not have money to clear, and that is what has brought us this far,” he pointed out.

The Director of Investigations at the National Security, Chief Superintendent Osman Alhassan, who took the minister round the factories, said although some of those arrested tried to influence the security personnel who effected the arrests, the team stood their grounds and duly carried out their duty.

He disclosed that, so far, 10 foreign nationals and four Ghanaians had been arrested in connection with the missing containers.

Chief Superintendent Alhasssan said the team would not be able to tell the number of containers it had retrieved so far, explaining that the cables they had retrieved were not in containers.

“All I can say is that we have retrieved some quantity of the cables, but I can’t quantify in the form of containers. We have heard about some transformers elsewhere, but I am yet to move on that one, so at the appropriate time, we will keep you updated,” the Director of Investigations at the National Security said.

Businesswoman, 62, remanded over alleged fraud https://www.adomonline.com/businesswoman-62-remanded-over-alleged-fraud/ Wed, 26 Mar 2025 15:10:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2519148

A 62-year-old woman, Nana Ama Nwurueze, also known as Ohemaa, has been remanded in custody after being charged with defrauding a businesswoman of $13,000 under false pretenses.

Nwurueze, who allegedly portrayed herself as a wealthy entrepreneur with vast property holdings, including Ohemaa Plaza in East Legon, fishing vessels in Takoradi, and a house at the Airport, is accused of using these claims to deceive the complainant, Dorothy Asare, into parting with her money.

The accused appeared before the Adabraka District Court, presided over by Abena Asoh Owusu-Omenyo, where she pleaded not guilty to the charge of defrauding by false pretence. Despite her plea, the court denied her bail request, citing evidence that suggested she was a flight risk.

According to Chief Inspector Apewa Achana, the prosecution revealed that Nwurueze had been evading arrest since a bench warrant was issued in December of the previous year. She was eventually apprehended in March 2024 following a petition to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by the complainant.

During the bail application, Nwurueze’s counsel, George Asamani, argued that his client had been unwell and had no intention of fleeing justice, assuring the court she would comply with all court proceedings. However, Chief Inspector Achana opposed the bail, citing Nwurueze’s history of evading arrest and going into hiding.

The prosecution’s case outlines that Nwurueze was introduced to Asare through a mutual friend. She allegedly convinced Asare that she was a successful businesswoman with multiple properties and over ten shipping containers of goods at the Takoradi port. Nwurueze then persuaded Asare to lend her $5,000, promising repayment after clearing the goods.

When Asare hesitated, Nwurueze reportedly claimed to be in partnership with Devtracco and showed Asare an ongoing apartment project, further building trust. Asare subsequently handed over $5,000 to the accused at her Airport residence.

A month later, Nwurueze requested an additional $8,000, claiming it was needed to resolve an issue at the port, again promising repayment within two weeks.

However, after several weeks of failed attempts to retrieve the money, Asare discovered that Nwurueze did not own the Airport property and had no dealings with Devtracco. Investigations also revealed that Nwurueze had no shipping containers at any port in Ghana.

The prosecution insisted that Nwurueze’s actions were deliberate and aimed at defrauding the complainant, successfully obtaining $13,000 through false representations.

The case has been adjourned, and Nwurueze remains in custody pending further proceedings.

The victim, Japhet Yeboah, was fatally shot on February 18, 2025, at his mobile phone shop in Nkrankwanta.

He was buried shortly after the incident.

Issifu Basoma, the Assembly Member for the Asuopiri Electoral Area, confirmed that the suspect was in police custody and aiding in ongoing investigations.

Basoma explained that the suspect’s confession came after community leaders sought the intervention of the local shrine to help identify those responsible for the murder.

As part of the community’s traditions, the elders performed rituals and poured libations to invoke the power of the local deity.

Shortly after, the suspect approached them to admit his guilt.

The suspect also guided the elders to a site where a pistol, allegedly used in the murder, was recovered along with other sharp weapons.

A source from the Nkrankwanta Police Station confirmed that the suspect remains under investigation while in custody.

The victims, all minors between the ages of six and seven, are pupils at a cultural dance school operated by the convict.

According to Chief Inspector Joseph Kussah, the Prosecutor, Adu Amissah, a choreography teacher, exploited his position as a cultural dance instructor to abuse the trust of his young pupils.

The convict allegedly used manipulative tactics, including buying soft drinks and toffees for the children and later apply lubricant on his penis and fingers to facilitate the abuses.

The act was detected after the girls fell sick, one after the other and were sent to the hospital by their parents where they admitted that they have been defiled by Adu Amissah.

Adu Amissah, according to the prosecutor, jumped bail for six months after being granted bail during the initial stage of the investigation.

However, through the vigorous efforts of the Central North Regional Police Cyber Unit, the convict was located and arrested at Adenta, in the Greater Accra Region.

On March 5, 2025, Adu Amissah was brought before the Twifo Hemang District Magistrate’s Court to face seven counts of indecent assault, and he pleaded guilty to all counts simplicita.

He was, therefore, convicted on his own plea by the court.

Former Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah Yeboah has shed light on the challenges encountered during the early stages of the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

In an interview on Channel One TV, Tuah Yeboah revealed that during his tenure, the Attorney General’s office found the available evidence insufficient to pursue charges against any suspects linked to the case.

“During our time, the police conducted investigations and submitted the docket to the AG’s office for review. After examining the docket, we realized there wasn’t enough evidence to warrant the prosecution of anyone, and we advised the police to continue with their investigation,” he explained.

Tuah Yeboah expressed cautious optimism about recent progress in the case, particularly the arraignment and remand of suspect Daniel Owusu Koranteng.

“I am happy that today they have been able to get someone who has been arraigned before a court and remanded to prison custody,” he stated.

However, he raised concerns about the strength of the evidence against the suspect, questioning, “But the question is, do they have enough evidence?”

An Accra Circuit Court has denied bail to Ahmed Mohammed Lawal, a painter accused of stealing electrical cables worth GH₵1,035,500 from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) building at Ridge in Accra.

Lawal, who has pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing, had his lawyer, Nii Martey Korley, argue that he was not a flight risk, had a fixed place of residence at Accra Newtown, and was gainfully employed.

He also assured the court that his client had credible sureties and had cooperated with police investigations.

Korley further noted that Lawal had spent over a month in custody and needed bail to prepare for his defense. The prosecution, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustin Kingsley Oppong, did not oppose the bail request but left the decision to the court.

ASP Oppong informed the court that investigations were nearing completion and that the accused had refunded GH₵2,000. However, the stolen cables were yet to be recovered.

Delivering his ruling, relieving judge Isaac Addo rejected the bail application and ordered that Lawal remain in custody.

According to the prosecution, the complainants—Samuel Nii Tettey, a safety officer, and Davidson Mensah Otinkorang, an electrical engineer at the BoG construction site—noticed on February 16, 2025, that someone had broken into the Energy Farm and stolen 1c x 240 and 1c x 300 square copper cables.

CCTV footage allegedly captured Lawal and two accomplices stealing the cables.

The complainants subsequently apprehended him and handed him over to the police. Investigations revealed that the accused and his accomplices had used a scaffold to gain entry into the Energy Farm, cut the copper cables, and sold them at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Lawal allegedly received GH₵2,000 as his share but was unable to help police locate his accomplices or the buyer.

The case has been adjourned to April 2, 2025.

Ahmed Suale’s ‘friend’ arrested in connection with his murder  https://www.adomonline.com/ahmed-suales-friend-arrested-in-connection-with-his-murder/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 15:15:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2515664 The Ghana Police Service, in its efforts to further investigate the murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, has arrested a key suspect linked to the case.

The suspect, identified as Daniel Owusu Koranteng, also known as Akwasi Amakye, is accused of betraying Suale by leaking his photographs to a prominent Ghanaian politician before his assassination.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was shot dead near his family home in Madina on January 16, 2019, by unknown assailants. His murder came after he collaborated with the BBC on an investigative report.

Amakye, a former colleague of Suale at Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was dismissed from the investigative firm before the incident.

According to police intelligence, he fled Ghana immediately after authorities began linking him to the case.

His arrest follows crucial findings from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States, which uncovered phone records and other key evidence suggesting his involvement.

The FBI’s analysis reportedly includes phone conversations between Amakye and Suale in the days leading up to the murder. As part of the ongoing investigation, Ahmed Suale’s mobile phones were sent to the U.S. for forensic examination.

A source within the police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) disclosed that Amakye used to frequently visit Suale at his residence in Madina.

However, upon sensing that police were closing in on him, he relocated to the United States.

Authorities say he secretly returned to Ghana last week, leading to his arrest at a hair-plaiting salon in Amasaman-Adease.

The development has sparked controversy within the police service, as a senior officer is reportedly attempting to interfere with the investigation.

According to sources, the officer is advocating for the suspect to be granted police inquiry bail rather than being immediately arraigned before court. The situation has reportedly created tension at the police headquarters.

Ahmed Suale was assassinated after he and his team at Tiger Eye PI exposed widespread corruption in African football, with a significant focus on Ghana.

The Wa District Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Maxwell Maxibrian Titriku, remanded the six suspects into custody to assist the police in investigations into the circumstances leading to the victim’s death.

The suspects, Senior Inspector Adjei Boadi Philip, aged 36; Assistant Immigration Control Officer II (AICO) Abdulai Rawuf Abubakar, aged 22; AICO II Nkrumah Alex, 33 years; and AICO II Philip Oppong, 28, all stationed at the GIS post in Nadowli, were charged with murder.

Suspects Pogee Antaa Julius, aged 38, a Unit Committee Chairman of Noro Electoral Area and a farmer, and Logu Seidu, a 49-year-old relative of Patrick Banoebuuri, were also charged with abetment of crime to wit murder.

According to the prosecution, on March 6, 2025, Patrick Banoebuuri was accused of stealing 18 sheep and was arrested by community members. Fourteen of the animals were later retrieved, and he was set free.

On March 7, 2025, Pogee Antaa Julius and Logu Seidu allegedly led a group from Naro to Banoebuuri’s house in Piree-Kaangu and apprehended him again for failing to produce the remaining four sheep.

He was then handed over to Senior Inspector Adjei Boadi Philip, AICO II Abdulai Rawuf Abubakar, AICO II Nkrumah Alex, and AICO II Philip Oppong, who were on duty at the Ghana Immigration checkpoint at Naro, for disciplinary action.

The court heard that the officers “received the deceased in good health and took him through ‘frog jump’ during which he died.”

When informed, the police proceeded to the scene and found Banoebuuri’s lifeless body at the Immigration checkpoint in Naro, covered with tent fabric behind a zinc bathroom. The body was then conveyed to the Upper West Regional Hospital for preservation and autopsy.

Man, 35, arrested for smuggling drugs through Aflao Border https://www.adomonline.com/man-35-arrested-for-smuggling-drugs-through-aflao-border/ Thu, 13 Mar 2025 06:49:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2514183

A 35-year-old Nigerian national, Obinna Robinson, has been arrested by a joint security team at the Aflao Border for allegedly smuggling Hepatitis B medication into Ghana.

The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, March 11, at about 9:00 a.m. while driving a Sienna vehicle with registration number ENU 369 ZG, belonging to Amadel Transport Company, Nigeria. During a routine inspection, security officers discovered 1,200 ampoules of Euvax B, Eupenta injection, and Hepatitis B vaccine rDNA concealed within the vehicle’s body parts, including the door card compartment and the spare tyre compartment.

The operation involved personnel from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Narcotics Control Commission, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, the Small Arms and Light Weapons Commission, and other security agencies.

The smuggled pharmaceuticals were confiscated, and the vehicle was impounded pending further investigations.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, Volta Regional Head of the FDA, Gordon Akurugu, reiterated that drugs are not permitted to pass through land borders but must enter the country via air or sea.

“No drug should pass through inland borders but only through the harbour and the Kotoka International Airport. The fact that they conceal the drugs tells you they know they are engaging in an illicit act,” he stated.

He warned that such concealment compromises the integrity and quality of vaccines, which require storage at temperatures between two to eight degrees Celsius. He emphasized that the smuggling of pharmaceuticals poses a serious public health risk.

Mr. Akurugu urged Nigerian regulatory authorities to strengthen measures to prevent illicit drug trafficking and uphold public health standards.

Salaga SHS: 28 Students, including 3 convicts, recommended for indefinite suspension https://www.adomonline.com/salaga-shs-28-students-including-3-convicts-recommended-for-indefinite-suspension/ Mon, 10 Mar 2025 16:39:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2513211

A 15-member committee, consisting of major stakeholders from Salaga Senior High School (SHS) in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region, has recommended the indefinite suspension of 28 students for misconduct.

The incident occurred during a routine entertainment event on February 8, when two groups of students from Kpembe and Salaga towns clashed.

The situation escalated when one student, Hardi Hamza, initially withdrew from the confrontation, only to return with a group of individuals, resulting in a shooting and injuries.

Those involved were arrested and brought before the Salaga Magistrate Court, where they were tried and sentenced to a non-custodial penalty of 100 penalty units each, amounting to GH¢1,200 or, in default, six months in prison.

Recent developments reveal that of the 28 students implicated in the incident, only 20 reported to school on the day of their arrest, while the remaining 8 refused to turn themselves in.

Out of the 20 arrested, three were allowed to leave, and an additional 17 were later released, leaving only three students, who pleaded guilty in court, facing conviction.

The affected students include three from SHS 1, eight from SHS 2, and 17 from SHS 3. The three convicted students—Hardi Hamza (alias Mad Lion), Nuru Ibrahim (Ibi), and Abubakari Zaidu (Macharjia)—have been recommended for indefinite suspension. The remaining 25 students are to face internal suspension with hard labor on campus.

The committee was jointly established by the management of Salaga SHS and the East Gonja Municipal Education Directorate, with representatives from the Kpembe Paramount Chief Palace, Old Students Association, Municipal Assembly, Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Municipal Education Service Directorate, tutors, and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

Sources confirm that the 28 suspension letters are ready and await approval from the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to proceed.

It was also revealed that Hardi Hamza, one of the convicted students, had been involved in a similar incident two years ago when he attempted to bring a gun to school after a dispute among students.

The plan was thwarted, and Hamza was suspended indefinitely, though his parents later intervened to lift the suspension before his recent conviction.

Gregory Afoko’s murder retrial adjourned https://www.adomonline.com/gregory-afokos-murder-retrial-adjourned/ Wed, 05 Mar 2025 14:58:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2511650

A Criminal Court in Accra has adjourned the third retrial of Gregory Afoko, who is standing trial for the 2015 murder of former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adams Mahama.

The new hearing date is set for April 7, 2025.

Afoko, who is currently out on GHS 500,000 bail after spending nearly a decade on remand at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, is accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi, who is on death row, to murder Mahama.

The court granted the adjournment after the prosecution requested more time to properly constitute a seven-member jury for the retrial.

The case stems from the May 2015 acid attack on Adams Mahama, who was reportedly assaulted at the entrance of his Bolgatanga home and later died from his injuries.

The deceased had allegedly identified Afoko and Alangdi as his attackers before succumbing to his wounds.

In April 2024, a jury delivered a split verdict, convicting Asabke Alangdi of conspiracy but acquitting Gregory Afoko of both murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Following this, the court ordered a retrial for Afoko, pending the resolution of issues related to jury composition.

Background

On February 24, 2025, Afoko was granted bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 by an Accra High Court. The bail was secured with two sureties, one of whom had to be justified. This marks the third time Afoko has sought bail since his arrest in 2015.

Afoko and Asabke Alangdi were accused of conspiring to murder Adams Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his home in Bolgatanga.

The trial, which began in 2019 and concluded in 2023, saw the jury return a hung verdict on the charges against Afoko. As a result, the court ordered a retrial, and Afoko was re-arrested after the proceedings and denied bail.

The next adjourned date will determine whether the case can proceed with a properly constituted jury.

Donkor has been charged with unlawful control of narcotic drugs and the use of the property for narcotic offences.

Donkor told the police that the alleged cannabis found in a glass jar at his drinking spot was intended for his “personal use.”

The court presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo, did not take Donkor’s plea, as the substance retrieved had been sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for examination.

However, Donkor was granted bail in the sum of GHC 50,000 with two sureties, and the case was adjourned to March 31, 2025.

Prosecution led by Detective Chief Inspector Abel Amanie told the court that the complainants in the matter are police officers
stationed at the Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters, Accra.

The prosecution stated that Donkor resides at Neoplan Station, near Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Accra.

On February 4, 2025, at about 1000 hours, officers involved in an anti-narcotics operation visited the Kwame Nkrumah Circle area, where they proceeded to the “Pascal Drinking Spot” at Neoplan Station, a location believed to be frequented by individuals involved in drug use and tracking.

According to the prosecution, over 30 individuals, mostly young men and women were present at the spot and were suspected of being engaged in narcotic activities.

Upon noticing the presence of the police, the group quickly ed the scene.

A subsequent search of the premises revealed a small, oval-shaped piece of a dark, hard substance, believed to be a narcotic drug, which was recovered in a glass jar behind the counter of the drinking spot.

Donkor was arrested and taken to the police station for further investigation.

During investigations, Donkor admitted the offence in his caution statement that the alleged drug was for his personal use.

The prosecution said the drug had been forwarded to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory examination and report.

Nungua: All the hospitals failed us – Family of Naa Gamu https://www.adomonline.com/nungua-all-the-hospitals-failed-us-family-of-naa-gamu/ Thu, 27 Feb 2025 10:00:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2509164

The family of Lawrencia Naa Borley Nelson (Naa Gamu), who died during a chieftaincy installation at Nungua, has spoken out about the incident.

In an interview with Accra-based TV3, her brother, Raphael Nii Bortey Agbli, claimed she could have survived if not for medical delays.

“We went to the first place, but they didn’t even offer first aid and turned us away to go to LEKMA. When we got to LEKMA emergency, they also said we should take her to Ridge Hospital.

“Imagine the distance, nobody helped us. Not even an ambulance. They said there was none. We got to Ridge; they removed the bullet and dressed her leg only for them to tell us she is dead,” he sadly recounted.

Naa Borley was fatally shot in the thigh when a musket was fired during the ceremony.

Despite earlier reports denying her status as a queenmother, the family clarified that she had been enstooled as the queen and her husband as chief of the Ga-Adangme Moslem Union (GAMU), Nungua West branch.

Raphael expressed difficulty coping with his sister’s sudden death.

“I keep having flashes of her. I haven’t slept since the incident. All the hospitals failed us, and I wish their licenses would be revoked or the hospitals shut down. What’s their use?” he lamented.

Her uncle, Martison Quaye, suspects foul play in the incident.

“This is very painful. We heard the suspect has been arrested, but as a family, we haven’t seen him. We need to see him and ask him why he did that.

“Firstly, in such ceremonies, isn’t it gunpowder that is used? And secondly, isn’t he supposed to fire into the sky? Why shoot behind her thigh?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, the Nungua District Court on Wednesday remanded Samuel Adjei into police custody for two weeks over the incident.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly discharged live ammunition from a single-barrel gun during the ceremony.

Samuel is expected to reappear before the court on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

A 26-year-old cashier accused of misappropriating GH₵306,140 belonging to her employer has appeared before the Dansoman Circuit Court.

Taibatu Sulley, the cashier, allegedly used GH₵250,775.72 for an online investment, which turned out to be fraudulent.

Charged with stealing, she pleaded not guilty.

The court granted her bail at GH₵320,000 with three sureties. Two of them must be public servants residing within the court’s jurisdiction and earning at least GH₵3,000 monthly. The third surety must justify the bail sum with title deeds or documents covering an immovable property.

Additionally, the court ordered her to deposit her Ghana Card at the court’s registry and report to the police once a week. The prosecution was directed to file disclosures by April 16, 2025, for the Case Management Conference.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, an administrator of the company (name withheld), reported that Taibatu had been working as a cashier at the company’s Tudu branch for three years.

On December 19, 2024, she was required to deposit GH₵223,180 in daily sales into the company’s bank account at Fidelity Bank, Tudu branch, but failed to do so. She again failed to deposit GH₵13,920 and GH₵3,800 on December 28 and 30, respectively. On December 31, she did not deposit GH₵65,240.

After noticing that no funds had been deposited, the complainant filed a police report. Taibatu was later arrested on February 14, 2025, at Ga Odumase near Pokuase.

Investigations revealed that she had invested GH₵250,775.72 in an online scheme, which turned out to be fraudulent.

In her caution statement, she admitted to the offence, explaining that she was unaware the investment was fraudulent. She claimed she was asked to top up with more cash before being able to withdraw her money, at which point she realized she had been duped.

The case is ongoing.

Illegal gold miners invade Breman-Adomanya forest, attack journalist https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-gold-miners-invade-breman-adomanya-forest-attack-journalist/ Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:21:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2507790 Chinese and Ghanaian illegal gold miners have encroached upon a 261-acre tract within the Breman-Adomanya forest in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the Western Region, causing extensive environmental damage, including the destruction of timber, cocoa, and rubber plantations, as well as the contamination of the nearby River Tano.

Despite police awareness of these activities, the miners continue their operations. On Sunday, February 23, they attacked Citi News’ Western Regional Correspondent, Akwasi Agyei Annim, while he was documenting the environmental destruction.

The assailants damaged his equipment in the presence of a police escort. The situation escalated when a security guard alerted the miners to the journalists’ presence.

The miners, led by one Yaw Kurankyi—allegedly responsible for selling the land to the illegal operators—confronted the media team, seizing their camera, microphones, and Annim’s mobile phone.

Kurankyi verbally abused Annim and used his vehicle to block the journalists’ departure, detaining them until 7 PM.

The miners demanded the deletion of all recorded material before permitting their release. It was only after additional police officers arrived that the journalists were allowed to leave after agreeing to erase the footage at the Asankrangwa District Police Station.

Following the incident, Kurankyi was arrested, and statements were taken from the journalists.

Local resident Isaac Bekye expressed frustration over the lack of intervention from traditional and law enforcement authorities regarding the illegal mining activities.

He highlighted the extensive destruction of cocoa farms, timber, food crops, and water bodies, noting that complaints to authorities have been ignored and that those opposing the miners face threats of violence.

He urged the government, particularly the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, to deploy security forces to halt the ongoing environmental destruction.

When contacted for information on the legal status of the mining companies involved, Asankrangwa Minerals Commission Officer, Clement Adzormah, declined to comment and referred inquiries to the Commission’s headquarters in Accra.
