Dr. Bissiw-Kotei made the disclosure in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, following a series of arrests and community engagements in the Ashanti Region.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Women’s Organiser declined to mention any names.

“The person gave me a long history about how far back we go and wanted to see if the arrested individuals could be released. But I made it clear that it would not be possible. They have caused destruction and must face the consequences,” she stated.

Reaffirming her commitment to the fight against illegal mining, despite threats to her life, she vowed to uphold the integrity of the Minerals Development Fund, insisting it would not be tarnished by any bribery scandal.

“He tried everything possible, but it didn’t work, so he finally mustered the courage to call me. He said they are willing to accept any conditions we give. But they must face the full rigours of the law, because bribery will not work at the Minerals Development Fund,” she stressed.

The outspoken politician emphasized that she is personally committed to championing the cause of mining communities and will stop at nothing to defend their interests.

You should know better – MP tells Asiedu Nketia for calling EC incompetent [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/you-should-know-better-mp-tells-asiedu-nketia-for-calling-ec-incompetent-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:09:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548797 Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has criticised National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, for his persistent attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC), urging him to rather demonstrate leadership.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the MP said someone with Asiedu Nketia’s political experience should know better.

“Asiedu Nketia has done politics for long. He should be the one showing us the right thing. You don’t go around accusing the EC of being incompetent while you are the ones creating the problems” he said.

He warned that if these tensions are not properly addressed, it could lead to dangerous consequences for the country’s democracy.

“If this issue is not resolved, it can bring bigger problems. Every government may want to have their own EC, and that’s not good for democracy.”

Commenting on the possibility of a petition to the presidency for the removal of the EC Chair, Jean Mensa, he said:

“With what they are doing and saying, it won’t be shocking at all. But even if it gets there, I hope the judges and the committee that may look into the issue will rise to the occasion and serve the interest of the nation.”

He also alleged that the NDC has a history of pushing for the removal of key figures in state institutions.

“Their actions show that they will even be behind removing the EC Chair, just like they did to the Chief Justice.”

Baffour Awuah added that Ghanaians are closely observing the behaviour of the NDC and will respond at the right time.

“Ghanaians are watching Asiedu Nketia and his NDC people who are eager to see the removal of the EC. But when the time for elections comes, they will show you where power truly lies.”

His reaction follows Asiedu Nketia’s recent press briefing in which he described the EC’s leadership as unfit for purpose and demanded their removal, citing a pattern of alleged electoral mismanagement.

We planned to resume our strike today, but… – GRNMA [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/we-planned-to-resume-our-strike-today-but-grnma-listen/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:03:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548790 The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has revealed that it came close to resuming its strike action today, June 26, 2025.

The General Secretary, David Koranteng Twum, disclosed this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

“The National Council decided that we resume the strike today, but after extensive discussions between Wednesday and Thursday, we reached a consensus to rescind our decision,” he stated.

Mr. Twum emphasised that had the strike gone ahead, the association would not have provided any roadmap, adding that nurses in the country are not given the respect they deserve.

He stated that the association has given the government until July 10, 2025, to meet four key demands, warning that the deadline is non-negotiable.

He further cautioned that if the government fails to act within the set timeframe, the GRNMA will not hesitate to resume its industrial action.

The GRNMA on June 13 suspended its strike, which began on June 2, following “fruitful” negotiations with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and government representatives.

A follow-up meeting was scheduled for Thursday, June 26, but was postponed due to the unavailability of some key stakeholders.

The crucial meeting was to determine whether the truce holds or if nurses and midwives will once again take industrial action, which previously disrupted healthcare services nationwide.

You’re a ‘small boy’ in NPP; tone down your utterances – Former MP slams Nana B https://www.adomonline.com/youre-a-small-boy-in-npp-tone-down-your-utterances-former-mp-slams-nana-b/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 12:32:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548653 Former Subin Member of Parliament (MP), Eugene Boakye Antwi, has taken a swipe at New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, urging him to be more measured in his public utterances.

In a strongly worded response during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Antwi described Nana B as a “small boy” in the party whose comments often lack the maturity expected of someone in his position.

“Excuse me to say, he is a small boy in the party. Being a National Organiser doesn’t make you a senior member. He is my young brother, and I will urge him to be measured in his utterances. His tone and language must reflect his position,” he said.

Mr. Antwi warned that speaking out of emotion could backfire.
“When he talks out of emotion, we will also use emotions to vote. As a National Organiser, the masses must gravitate towards you, so you must be patient in dealing with the people. In rebuilding, we must be open to suggestions. If the ideas don’t help, we discard them—not insult people,” he cautioned.

His comments follow Nana B’s response to NPP stalwart Dr. Arthur Kennedy, who recently questioned the timing of the party’s presidential primaries. Dr. Kennedy argued that choosing a flagbearer at this point—after the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections—was premature and could be disastrous. He likened the party’s rebuilding process to constructing a building that requires a solid foundation.

However, Nana B dismissed the analogy, insisting the NPP’s structures are already in place and ready to support the party’s future.

But Mr. Antwi believes Nana B’s reaction was unhelpful and divisive.
“We need sober reflection, not bravado. Rebuilding after a loss takes more than structures—it requires humility, unity, and open-mindedness,” he said.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing stressed the need for collaboration among all party stakeholders, cautioning that internal divisions could derail the party’s chances.

“Former President Kufuor said it all—when you are given power temporarily, it doesn’t mean you own the party. I believe in a tradition, not a faction, because a camp or faction cannot win power,” he stated.

He added, “None of the presidential aspirants’ camps, including Bawumia, Ken, Joe Ghartey, Adutwum, Bryan Acheampong—none of them can single-handedly secure power for us unless we unite.”

Mr. Antwi described the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections as a necessary wake-up call and urged the party to prioritise internal healing and reform.

“We must fix ourselves first. We need to reconnect with the people and rebuild the trust of Ghanaians,” he said.

He further called for a return to the party’s foundational principles.

“We must realign our party with the values of the founding fathers. We must revisit the traditions and ideologies on which the party was built,” he urged.

If the people who voted for you say E-Levy won’t help, why force it? – Eugene Antwi on NPP’s 2024 defeat https://www.adomonline.com/if-the-people-who-voted-for-you-say-e-levy-wont-help-why-force-it-eugene-antwi-on-npps-2024-defeat/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 11:58:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548606 Former Member of Parliament for Subin in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has described the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections as more than just a political defeat.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Antwi said the results were a wake-up call for the party to reflect on its leadership approach and connection with the electorate.

“The 2024 election was not just a political loss. It was a wake-up call. At some point, as a leader, you need to sit down and listen to your people,” he said.

According to him, the NPP lost touch with the very people who voted them into power due to rigid systems and messaging that failed to resonate with the needs of ordinary Ghanaians.

“Our systems became too rigid, and our messaging disconnected from the people we were elected to serve,” he explained.

Mr. Antwi specifically cited the introduction of the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), which was widely criticized by the public.

“If the people who voted for you tell you the E-Levy won’t help them, why then do you go ahead and implement it?” he questioned.

2024 election was not just a politcal loss but a wake up call - Eugene Antwi

He also expressed concern over policy inconsistencies, pointing out that while ordinary Ghanaians were burdened with new taxes, others were living in luxury and avoiding basic obligations.

“Meanwhile, people have built big houses and are renting them out without paying property rates. There were a lot of things that just weren’t right. So how did we expect the masses to vote for us again?” he asked. “They definitely will vote against us, and that’s why we lost.”

Looking ahead, Eugene Boakye Antwi stressed the need for unity and reform within the party to stand a chance in the 2028 general elections.

“We need stability in the party. We must listen, adjust, and work to win back the trust of Ghanaians,” he added.

Following the NPP’s announcement to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, Dr. Kennedy questioned the decision, asking, “Why pick it in early 2026 when you could wait till mid-2027 or late 2027?”

He argued that the party’s internal discourse had reached a boiling point, and selecting a flagbearer at this stage might be premature and potentially disastrous.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B, who disagreed with Dr. Kennedy’s stance, described the move as a success for the party.

According to him, the NPP’s structures are already firmly in place, and it is misleading to liken the party to a building under construction.

“Are we going to build a house? The NPP structure is already there, so what are we going to build? Are we going to build a skyscraper?” he quizzed.

Nana B argued that 99% of the tensions and internal wrangling within the party stem from the presidential primaries.

“The comparison with a building is totally unacceptable because nobody has said after the presidential primaries, we will hold national, regional, constituency, and polling station elections. We only agreed on the presidential,” he stated.

NPP Chairman apologises after demanding dismissal of all national executives [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-chairman-apologises-after-demanding-dismissal-of-all-national-executives-audio/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 11:06:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548104 First National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dankwa Smith Butey, is said to have apologised after calling for a complete overhaul of the party’s current leadership.

The NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, disclosed this in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

“Chairman has apologised to the National Council for his statement. It was wrong and unfortunate, and I don’t want to go into it because he has apologised unreservedly. He was not forced to apologise, but we sometimes say things and we realise it was wrong,” he stated.

Chairman Butey had stated that the current national executives failed to deliver on their mandate and must be replaced ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He made these comments in an earlier interview on Dwaso Nsem in May 2025, citing the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections as a major setback that warrants change.

When asked if he shared Chairman Butey’s views, Nana B disagreed, stating that political party organisation is a different matter altogether.

He argued that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) suffered significant electoral defeats in the past with President John Mahama as candidate and Johnson Asiedu Nketia as General Secretary.

“We never thought Mahama would even become President again because he suffered a defeat badly, but he was repackaged and brought back. The NDC also rewarded Asiedu Nketia by voting him as Chairman,” he explained.

Why I don’t support MMDCEs endorsing flagbearer hopefuls – Nana B [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/why-i-dont-support-mmdces-endorsing-flagbearer-hopefuls-nana-b-video/ Wed, 25 Jun 2025 10:56:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548091 National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, says he is not in support of the growing trend of endorsements by groups within the party for specific flagbearer hopefuls ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B stressed the need for cohesion within the party, cautioning that such endorsements risk dividing the ranks.

“We all want party cohesion. When former MMDCEs endorse one candidate and another group supports a different one, it creates unnecessary tension. That is why I don’t support such endorsements,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of recent public declarations by some former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) backing specific presidential hopefuls.

A group operating under the banner Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia recently endorsed the former Vice President as the preferred flagbearer for the 2028 elections.

Not long after, another set of former MMDCEs was reported to have paid a courtesy call on former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, during which they also declared their support for him.

But according to Nana B, such public displays of support are premature and could derail the party’s internal unity efforts.

“This is one of the reasons the leadership of the party has called a meeting with all presidential aspirants on July 3, 2025. We want to meet them, talk to them about the guidelines the National Council has approved, and advise them to speak to their followers so that we can maintain some sanity before the elections,” he stated.

NANA B ON MMDCES SUPPORT

Asked if he personally supports any of the aspirants, Nana B was emphatic.

“I don’t have a choice. We, as national officers, do not have a preferred candidate. Whoever the party elects to lead us, we will fully support,” he affirmed.

He clarified that there are no sanctions at the moment for the former MMDCEs, but the party’s leadership is taking steps to manage the situation through dialogue.

“We are not punishing anyone. This meeting is to help provide guidance so that everyone is on the same page moving forward,” he added.

Our “Thank You Tour” was turning into a popularity contest – Nana Akomea https://www.adomonline.com/our-thank-you-tour-was-turning-into-a-popularity-contest-nana-akomea/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 16:54:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547846 Former Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) post-election Thank You tour was gradually becoming a popularity contest instead of a unity-building exercise.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Akomea expressed concern that some party members used the tour to showcase their loyalty to certain flagbearer hopefuls, rather than promoting party unity.

“Our Thank You tour started becoming a popularity contest. People felt they needed to show they supported one person more than the other, and that created tension,” he said.

His comments follow widespread controversies that surrounded the party’s nationwide tour in May this year.

Former presidential aspirant Kennedy Agyapong even pulled out of the tour after a student was reportedly stabbed during one of the tour’s events at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

“In all the regions we visited, there were misunderstandings. At Berekum and Bantama, there was chaos – and this was supposed to be a Thank You tour,” Nana Akomea lamented.

He also cited an incident involving the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, saying, “Even when Chairman Wontumi was arrested at EOCO, people were fighting over who would pay his bail – just to show who supports who in the flagbearer race. That was pure showmanship.”

According to the former National Communications Director, the NPP is becoming increasingly divided along lines of religion, ethnicity, and loyalty to various flagbearer hopefuls.

“There is division over religion, over tribe, and all because of people eyeing the flagbearer slot. This is not good for the party,” he stressed.

He revealed that the growing disunity forced the party’s leadership to take swift action.

“The National Council decided we can’t wait any longer for the congress. With all these divisions, sitting idle was not an option,” he explained. “That is why we have scheduled the flagbearer election for January 2026 — to end all the chaos and confusion.”

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially announced that its presidential primaries will be held on Saturday, 31st January 2026, following a crucial meeting by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, 17th June 2025.

We don’t intend to make government unpopular – 2022 graduate teachers https://www.adomonline.com/we-dont-intend-to-make-government-unpopular-2022-graduate-teachers/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 11:07:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547696 Spokesperson for the 2022 batch of graduate teachers, Simon Kofi Nartey, says their ongoing protest over unpaid salaries and delayed staff identification numbers is not intended to make the government unpopular.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he explained that their actions are a result of frustration after exhausting several channels to get their concerns addressed.

“We are teachers, not politicians. It’s not in our minds to make the government unpopular. From the beginning, we have made many efforts to resolve this issue,” he said.

According to him, the group had consistently delegated their leaders to engage with the appropriate authorities in a bid to get their staff IDs and salaries processed, but it appears their patience is being taken for granted.

“In the previous administration, we were told that staff IDs are issued in batches. The first batch was released in December last year, so we waited, believing the rest would come soon,” he noted.

We don't intend to make gov't unpopular - 2022 Teachers

However, he said that by March and April this year, the promised follow-up IDs and payment of arrears had still not materialised.

“We kept waiting, but nothing happened. That’s why we decided to take this action. It’s not something we just woke up and did—we were forced to take this step,” he explained.

His comments follow a protest staged by a group of newly trained teachers from the 2022 batch of Colleges of Education graduates at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters on Monday, June 23.

The teachers, who claim they have gone months without pay, said they submitted a formal petition to GES but waited for over two hours at the premises without any response from officials.

Tensions rose when police officers arrived and gave the group a three-minute ultimatum to disperse. When the teachers refused, they were forcefully removed from the premises.

Despite this, the protesters say they are not backing down. They plan to present a petition to the Ministry of Finance on Tuesday before proceeding to Parliament.

Simon made the disclosure in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, shedding light on the harsh financial realities faced by many newly posted teachers.

As the spokesperson for the 2022 batch of trained teachers from the Colleges of Education, his revelation comes on the back of a protest staged by the group at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters in Accra on Monday, June 23.

The teachers are demanding the release of their staff identification numbers and payment of about 10 months of salary arrears.

Simon’s story reflects the deepening financial struggles among newly trained teachers in Ghana, many of whom go for months or even years without official postings or salaries.

“If it has to do with how we’re surviving, it is very difficult. Most of us had to move to different places for work and had to rent accommodation. We pleaded with our landlords to accept one-year rent, but for me, I could only afford six months—and even then, I’ve only managed to pay one month’s utility bill,” he said.

“I’ve been disconnected due to the debt and I sleep in darkness. It might interest you to know that I work as a night security man at a fuel station to support myself,” he added.

Simon stressed that the ongoing hardship is the main reason they decided to picket at GES, vowing that they will not back down until their concerns are addressed by the government.

Lands Minister to meet Coalition Against Galamsey https://www.adomonline.com/lands-minister-to-meet-coalition-against-galamsey/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 10:52:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547237 The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, is expected to meet the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) on Wednesday, June 25, 2025.

A leading member of the coalition, Professor Mamudu Akudugu, disclosed this on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, as calls for urgent government action against galamsey intensify.

The National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) explained that the meeting follows a formal request made by GCAG for an engagement with President John Mahama.

However, the President referred the matter to Mr. Kofi-Buah.

Prof. Akudugu noted that the coalition will use the meeting to reaffirm its demand for the government to fulfil its promises and intensify efforts to end illegal and irresponsible mining.

Key among the coalition’s demands, he said, will be for the government to revoke Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, which permits mining in forest reserves.

“For us as a coalition, our demand is for the L.I. to be repealed, and we stand by it—whether it has been amended or not. As long as it has not been revoked, we believe that it cannot fight galamsey head-on.

“We have gathered further evidence and wanted to present it to the President, but he has asked that we engage the sector minister. So the meeting will come off in two days,” he stated.

He also reiterated the coalition’s renewed call for a state of emergency to be declared in illegal mining zones.

Galamsey: Prof. Mamudu poses deep questions to Chinese Ambassador [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-prof-mamudu-poses-deep-questions-to-chinese-ambassador-audio/ Mon, 23 Jun 2025 10:04:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2547214 The National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Prof. Mamudu Akudugu, has questioned the basis on which the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, made his controversial statement regarding the illegal mining (galamsey) menace.

Prof. Akudugu argued that there are many foreigners in Ghana, not just Chinese nationals, and that the Ambassador should rather be concerned about why his people are frequently associated with galamsey.

“The Chinese Ambassador is completely wrong to be crying victim instead of advising his people not to engage in illegal activities,” he said.

The member of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) made these remarks during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

“It is not only Chinese who are in Ghana; we have different nationals. So why do we always associate Chinese with galamsey? That is what the Ambassador should be asking himself.

“How many nationalities are always arrested when galamsey sites are raided? My response to him is that Chinese are complicit and come to do illegal activities like galamsey in Ghana. That is why they are always mentioned and arrested,” he stated.

Speaking at a media interaction in Accra on Thursday, June 19, the Ambassador suggested that Ghanaians are primarily to blame for facilitating galamsey, adding that the practice might be impossible to eliminate.

Reacting to this, Prof. Akudugu emphasised that the statement should be a wake-up call to Ghanaian authorities to put in place stringent measures to tackle the illegality.

“The Ambassador’s comment is a challenge to our authorities to exude their power and do more. We believe that galamsey can end when the right steps are taken.

“We have made some proposals, and we believe that if government follows through, we can stop galamsey because it is about responsible mining—not stopping mining altogether. We can transform galamsey into something more sustainable and responsible,” he noted.

Kennedy Agyapong is the Joshua to take us to the promised land – NPP MP [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/kennedy-agyapong-is-the-joshua-to-take-us-to-the-promised-land-npp-mp-audio/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 13:04:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546681 Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Stephen Amoah, has expressed confidence that former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, is the right man to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) next flagbearer.

Dr. Amoah, a member of Mr. Agyapong’s campaign strategy team, described him as the “Joshua” appointed to lead Ghana into its promised land.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, he emphasised that Mr. Agyapong has been ordained by God and that his campaign team remains resolute in their mission.

The former Deputy Finance Minister backed his remarks with a biblical reference from 2 Timothy 1:7, which states: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

“He is the Joshua. God has appointed him to take Ghana to our promised land. If the NPP wants him, fine. But if not, there is no need to intimidate or cause fear, because God has not given us the spirit of timidity,” he declared.

“The deceit, lies and manipulation will not take us anywhere. If we want to adopt a Cinderella syndrome—knowing who the shoe fits but keeping him locked away—it is unto us,” he added.

Dr. Amoah’s remarks come in response to the recent public endorsement of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by over 60 NPP MPs, in support of his second presidential bid.

Describing the move as “propaganda,” he accused certain factions within the NPP of pressuring MPs, particularly first-timers, into publicly endorsing Dr. Bawumia.

He urged first-time lawmakers to stand their ground and resist any form of blackmail or intimidation.

NPP’s greatest deficiency is national executives without parliamentary experience – Former MP https://www.adomonline.com/npps-greatest-deficiency-is-national-executives-without-parliamentary-experience-former-mp/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 11:41:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546670 Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has expressed concerns over the composition of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national executives, describing it as the party’s greatest deficiency.

According to him, unlike the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the NPP’s national executives lack parliamentary experience — a gap he believes weakens the party’s strategic positioning.

Dr. Kissi made these comments in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

This comes in the wake of ongoing efforts by the NPP to re-strategise and rebuild its base to regain public confidence and electoral strength following the shocking defeat in the 2024 election.

The former lawmaker acknowledged that while national executives of both major political parties have excelled in various capacities, the NDC’s leadership stands out in terms of experience, having risen through multiple ranks of political service.

“I’m ashamed to say this, but our NPP Chairman compared to Asiedu Nketia, our General Secretary compared to the NDC — when you look at it critically, in terms of managerial role, we [NPP] have lost some parliamentary experience.

“Some people in the NDC hierarchy are former ministers, and in every house, you gain some experience and knowledge due to the training you are exposed to,” he stated.

Dr. Kissi has therefore urged the NPP to take deliberate actions and make strategic decisions to strengthen its grassroots structures and secure more parliamentary seats in the next election.

“It is the polling stations that deliver parliamentary seats, so how can we win if we don’t strengthen the base? It is unlikely that you will win the presidency without majority parliamentary seats. Our programming should be geared towards having more parliamentary seats; then the icing on the cake will be the presidency,” he admonished.

I’ll resign if… – Nhyiaeso MP says after Bawumia’s endorsement meeting [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/ill-resign-if-nhyiaeso-mp-says-after-bawumias-endorsement-meeting-listen/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 11:04:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546662 Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Stephen Amoah, has claimed that the camp of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is overstating the level of support it enjoys within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

His comments follow a visit by about 60 NPP MPs to Dr. Bawumia’s office in Accra to publicly declare their support for his presidential bid.

Dr. Amoah, who is aligned with the campaign of Kennedy Agyapong, expressed doubt over the authenticity of the support shown, suggesting that the turnout did not reflect true loyalty.

Nhyiaeso MP Stephen Amoah

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, the MP insisted that some of the MPs who appeared in the group photo actually support other candidates.

“I know some MPs who were in that meeting but have different preferences. People can always change their minds when they consider the bigger picture and what Ghanaians expect from us,” he said.

He went further to challenge the narrative, saying: “We all saw the video, but not everyone in it supports Dr. Bawumia. I can count about seven people who were there but are not genuinely behind him. I vow that if those individuals go into an election and vote for Bawumia and he wins all their votes, I will resign.”

Despite refusing to give specific figures, Dr. Amoah expressed confidence in strong support for Kennedy Agyapong among MPs.

The NPP has scheduled its presidential primaries for January 31, 2026, with early endorsements already highlighting what is expected to be a fiercely contested internal race.

I spoke to some MPs, they said it was cosmetic – Appiah-Kubi on Bawumia’s endorsement meeting https://www.adomonline.com/i-spoke-to-some-mps-they-said-it-was-cosmetic-appiah-kubi-on-bawumias-endorsement-meeting/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 10:08:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546580 Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has downplayed the significance of the recent endorsement of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by over 60 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament (MPs), describing it as “cosmetic” and politically calculated.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Appiah-Kubi said he was not surprised by the development, insisting that the turnout of MPs did not necessarily reflect genuine support for Dr. Bawumia.

“I was not surprised at all. The fact that many people were there doesn’t mean they all support him.”

On Thursday, June 20, about 67 NPP MPs visited Dr. Bawumia at his office in Accra to formally declare their support for his presidential bid.

However, Mr. Appiah-Kubi believes many of them attended only out of obligation or pressure.

APPIAH KUBI ON BAWUMIA SUPPORT

“Some of the MPs told me personally that the meeting was cosmetic. They were called and told that Dr. Bawumia wanted to meet them. At that point, you can’t say no. But that doesn’t mean they support him” he said.

The former lawmaker added that political optics often mislead the public, recalling a similar incident involving Kennedy Agyapong years ago.

“I remember when Kennedy Agyapong also called on some MPs while seeking to be flagbearer. Many went to meet him, even though they didn’t support him—and Ken himself knew this,” he said.

According to Mr. Appiah-Kubi, more than half of the MPs who showed up at Dr. Bawumia’s meeting do not actually back him.

“If you say that all those people support him, then you don’t understand the work of a politician. Most of them only went because they were called to join the group” he stressed.

He said he had personally spoken to at least four MPs who confirmed they did not back the Vice President but joined the meeting out of political courtesy.

“The truth is hard for Ghanaians. People are afraid to speak openly, so they follow the crowd even when they don’t believe in it. That’s what is pulling us back” he said.

Zoomlion dignified sweeping jobs in Ghana – Communication Director https://www.adomonline.com/zoomlion-dignified-sweeping-jobs-in-ghana-communication-director/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 11:02:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546298

The Director of Communication and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Emma Osei-Duah, has expressed satisfaction with the progress the company has made over nearly two decades of operations.

She asserted that Zoomlion has significantly shaped and transformed Ghana’s waste management landscape.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Osei-Duah said the company has dignified the work of sweeping and waste management, making it more attractive to many Ghanaians.

“We realised that there was no dignity in sweeping jobs, and that was why we decided to give them uniforms. Due to the transformation, the job has now become attractive,” she explained.

According to her, some individuals who started as sweepers have since climbed the professional ladder.

“We have a lot of new people in the job, while others who started off as sweepers are now accountants, PhD holders, among others,” she added.

Her comments come in the wake of a letter from the Office of the President, announcing plans not to renew Zoomlion’s contract with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).

The decision follows a petition by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, who in 2013 exposed alleged irregularities in the Zoomlion-YEA contract and has since called for its termination.

Under the previous agreement, each sweeper was allocated GHS850 monthly—GHS600 of which went to Zoomlion, with GHS250 going to the worker. In 2024, Zoomlion reportedly charged the state GHS90 million in interest due to delayed payments by YEA.

The government has indicated plans to increase the wages of sweepers, citing “probable cost savings” from ending the current arrangement with Zoomlion. Future sanitation contracts, it added, will be awarded through a competitive, regionally or district-based procurement process.

Despite the development, Madam Osei-Duah insists Zoomlion has operated with diligence and integrity throughout its mandate.

We are not cheating sweepers – Zoomlion Communication Director fires back https://www.adomonline.com/we-are-not-cheating-sweepers-zoomlion-communication-director-fires-back/ Thu, 19 Jun 2025 10:25:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546285 The Director of Communication and Corporate Affairs at Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Emma Adwoa Appiah Osei-Duah, has dismissed media reports suggesting that the company is shortchanging its sweepers.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Madam Osei-Duah described the claims as false and painful, stating that Zoomlion has always advocated for the welfare of its workers.

“It’s really painful when people look us in the face and say we are mean or that we cheat the sweepers. That is not true,” she stated.

According to her, when Zoomlion started operations, sweepers were paid as little as GH₵50 under the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

However, it was Zoomlion itself that petitioned for better pay for the workers.

“We were the ones who pleaded for the salaries to be increased. We wrote letters and made proposals, and that’s how the pay rose from GH₵50 to GH₵180 and gradually to GH₵258,” she said.

She stressed that Zoomlion does not determine the salaries on its own but follows the amount agreed upon by the government.

Zoomlion debunks claims of cheating sweepers

“The current GH₵258 is what government has agreed should be paid to the sweepers. It is not that we are cheating anyone,” she clarified.

Touching on Zoomlion’s collaboration with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), she noted that the company values the relationship and works within the guidelines provided.

“We are in a partnership with the YEA. We don’t want to act outside what has been agreed upon. That’s why these accusations are so disheartening,” she added.

Madam Osei-Duah also disclosed Zoomlion’s impact on sanitation in Ghana, stating that the company has been instrumental in promoting the use of standard waste bins in homes and businesses.

“Since we began, we’ve played a key role in improving sanitation in the country. Today, waste collection is more structured, and homes are using proper bins because of our efforts.”

The company, she noted is focused on serving the nation and not looking for praise.

“We know the work we’re doing. We know we are serving God, and that is enough for us,” she said.

Justin Kodua reveals why NPP is holding early presidential primaries [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/justin-kodua-reveals-why-npp-is-holding-early-presidential-primaries-video/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 17:02:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546112 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has justified the party’s decision to hold an early presidential primary, saying it will ease internal tensions and help prepare for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kodua explained that social media now plays a critical role in shaping perceptions about party matters.

“Unlike some years back, social media has become very active and influential in our internal party matters. When something happens, emotions rise quickly, and it creates confusion and tension,” he said.

He observed that many supporters are more concerned about who becomes the next flagbearer than the broader national elections.

“Right now, if you observe commentary and campaign trends, people are not talking much about national elections but more about who becomes the party’s next presidential candidate. That tells you something,” he noted.

According to him, conducting the presidential primaries early will bring unity to the party and help calm nerves.

“Once a leader is chosen, the confusion will reduce. We’ll have someone to rally behind, and someone who can speak boldly on behalf of the party,” he said.

Mr. Kodua added that the NPP, now in opposition, needs a strong flagbearer to keep the government on its toes.

“We need a leader who can respond directly to the governing president. We can’t remain silent. Ghanaians must know we are reorganising and ready to win 2028,” he said.

He acknowledged that the party’s 2024 electoral defeat was painful and has prompted members to push for bold reforms.

“Everyone in the party has been hurt by the 2024 loss. That’s why we’re making drastic decisions, including the early presidential primaries, to show we’re serious about bouncing back.”

On the process leading to the new primary date, he said the National Council approved January 31, 2026, after reviewing recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee.

“As for the date and venue, it’s not for the Council to decide. That power lies with the National Council, and they’ve already approved it in line with Article 13(11) of our constitution.”

He revealed that though there were differing opinions on the timing, the decision to hold the primaries early was ultimately accepted.

“There were discussions both for and against the early primary. But in the end, there was no real opposition to the idea of doing it early.”

Meanwhile, a nine-member committee chaired by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu has been tasked with planning the July 2025 National Delegates Conference, where other constitutional amendments will be considered.

Ablekuma North collation: Police playing funny games with us – NPP https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-collation-police-playing-funny-games-with-us-npp/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 16:40:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2546103 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the Ghana Police Service of deliberate inaction that is preventing the Electoral Commission (EC) from concluding the collation of results in the Ablekuma North constituency.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Kodua claimed that only three polling stations remain to be collated, but the process has stalled due to the failure of the Police to provide the needed security.

“It’s left with just three polling stations for the EC to finish collating all the results and declare the winner for Ablekuma North,” he said.

According to him, every time the Electoral Commission attempts to invite political parties to discuss the process, certain individuals gather at the EC office to cause disturbances.

“Anytime the EC calls the parties for discussions, some bad elements mass up at the EC office and try to cause mayhem,” he noted.

He said that, in anticipation of this, the EC wrote to the Police Service to request protection, but the Police keep “going back and forth” with excuses.

“The EC wrote to the police for protection, but the Police are giving different stories,” he claimed.

Mr. Kodua revealed that the NPP wrote to the Police on June 3, seeking clarity on the security arrangements needed to carry out the collation as directed by the High Court.

He stressed that the people of Ablekuma North urgently need a Member of Parliament.

“We need to complete this process. Ablekuma North needs an MP as soon as possible,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the Police responded to the NPP’s letter, indicating they were waiting for legal advice from the Attorney General before acting.

But Mr. Kodua questioned the delay, alleging bias on the part of the security agency.

“To me, the Police are only doing the bidding of the NDC,” he alleged.

He added that in the coming weeks, the party will make public the legal steps they have taken to ensure the collation is completed.

“We’ll make public the legal steps we’ve taken. We are confident we won the elections,” he stressed.

The EC was earlier ordered by the High Court to complete the collation exercise in the constituency.

The NPP insists there is no legal impediment preventing the collation and is calling on the Police to act immediately to allow the EC to carry out its mandate.

Dr. Adutwum expresses concern over number of engineers produced annually https://www.adomonline.com/dr-adutwum-expresses-concern-over-number-of-engineers-produced-annually/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 20:06:15 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545719

Former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has lamented that Ghana is underproducing engineers despite its growing population.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Bosomtwe Member of Parliament (MP) revealed that the country should be producing about 30,000 engineers annually.

However, he stated that the current reality is that only about 6,500 engineers are produced each year — and even with these low numbers, many still struggle to find employment.

Dr. Adutwum cited Vietnam as an example, noting that the country produces 100,000 engineers out of its 93 million population, highlighting how far behind Ghana is.

He advocated for a national focus on STEM education and mathematics to enhance learning and enable students to explore and innovate.

“If we had started this 60 years ago, we would have been far advanced by now. We think education is just about memorising, but that’s why I said at the UN that we can’t memorise our way out of poverty — we can critically think our way out of poverty,” he stated.

“If we just chew and pour, we cannot transform our nation with education like Singapore and South Korea did.”

Dr. Adutwum stressed that Ghana can develop and prosper if the right steps are taken.

“That is why I don’t agree with those who say Ghana can never get better. If we adopt the right formulas and take them seriously, Ghana will develop,” he added.

Tribunal system will fuel corruption; we don’t need it – Prof. Ansa-Asare https://www.adomonline.com/tribunal-system-will-fuel-corruption-we-dont-need-it-prof-ansa-asare/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 11:49:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545516 Former Director of Ghana School of Law, Kweku Ansa-Asare, has stated that any plans to reintroduce the tribunal system under a Mahama-led government would be in bad taste.

According to him, reviving the tribunal system would erode Ghana’s democratic progress and further fuel corruption.

“The tribunal has always been here, so any nominee who says we should reintroduce it didn’t speak well. Sections 39–40 of the Court Act already addressed this. We removed the community and circuit tribunals, but we still have the district and circuit courts, which are active,” he said.

His statement comes after Supreme Court nominee Justice Dzamefe backed calls for the establishment of regional tribunals to assist with justice delivery in Ghana.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee for vetting on Monday, Justice Dzamefe stated that tribunals would help reduce the case burden on the courts, as more criminal cases could be handled there.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Professor Ansa-Asare disagreed.

“The attempt to revive the tribunal is to refer the ORAL cases there, but it will bring down the popularity of the NDC. We don’t need it. We have the district court where we are struggling to pay the salary of just one person—how much more a tribunal where we’ll need three people?”

“Those people are also corrupt, so we’ll just be fuelling corruption if we bring them back,” he added.

Without a cap at Supreme Court, more will come, and it won’t help – Ansa-Asare warns https://www.adomonline.com/without-a-cap-at-supreme-court-more-will-come-and-it-wont-help-ansa-asare-warns/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 11:04:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545472 Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has strongly opposed the idea of maintaining an uncapped number of judges at the Supreme Court, warning that such flexibility could be exploited for political gains.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Ansa-Asare argued that without a constitutional limit, successive presidents could manipulate the bench to suit their personal or political interests.

“When the number is left unlimited, it opens the door for abuse. Every president who comes to power will want to appoint more judges to the Supreme Court, not necessarily to strengthen justice delivery, but to reward allies. It has become too political,” he said.

He cited the United States as an example of a system with stability, where the number of Supreme Court justices has been fixed at nine, including the Chief Justice.

“In America, the number is nine. It’s capped. That way, no president wakes up one day to increase it for political convenience,” he added.

Mr. Ansa-Asare expressed worry that the current nomination of seven new justices might not be the end.

“It won’t be long before another one is added. That’s the fear. And it won’t help,” he stressed.

He also disagreed with Supreme Court judge nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe, who had earlier supported the current constitutional arrangement that allows for an unlimited number of judges at the apex court.

Ansa-Asare on capping of Supreme Court judges

Justice Dzamefe, during his vetting on Monday, defended the status quo, arguing that increasing the number of judges would help reduce the Supreme Court’s caseload, especially in matters related to land, chieftaincy, and constitutional interpretation.

“The framers of the Constitution knew why they didn’t cap the number. So far as it is not capped, I am for it,” Justice Dzamefe said.

But Mr. Ansa-Asare believes such flexibility undermines the independence of the judiciary.

“I don’t agree with Justice Dzamefe or anyone who says the numbers should be left unlimited. Politics has become a job for the boys and girls. Maybe when someone becomes president, they already have people they want to promote or reward,” he said.

He called on Parliament and constitutional experts to relook at the arrangement and establish a firm ceiling on the number of justices at the Supreme Court to preserve its integrity and independence.

“This is not about personalities. It’s about protecting the sanctity of the court,” he stated.

Prof. Ansa-Asare makes strong case for extension of judges’ retirement age https://www.adomonline.com/prof-ansa-asare-makes-strong-case-for-extension-of-judges-retirement-age/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 10:43:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545405

Former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Professor Kweku Ansa-Asare, has expressed strong support for proposals to extend the retirement age for judges to 75 — and even suggested the country could consider 80 years.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Prof. Ansa-Asare said extending the age limit would help Ghana retain valuable judicial expertise and reduce the need to appoint many new justices to the Supreme Court.

His comments come amid ongoing debate about the number of justices on Ghana’s apex court and a proposal to raise the retirement age for Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges from 70 to 75.

At their vetting on Monday, two Supreme Court nominees, Justice Senyo Dzamefe and Justice Sir Dennis Adjei, opposed the extension, citing systemic differences between Ghana and countries like the United States, where federal judges can serve for life.

Justice Adjei explained that U.S. judges can opt for a “senior judge” status from age 65, which allows them to reduce their caseloads while still remaining active.

But Prof. Ansa-Asare believes Ghana can benefit by tapping into the long-standing experience of its judges beyond age 70.

“I support calls to extend the retirement age to 75, and I wish we could even make it 80 because the minds of judges do not deteriorate, contrary to public perception,” he stated.

He further explained that many retired Ghanaian judges have served in international roles, especially within the Commonwealth, which proves their continued relevance.

“Our own Georgina Wood went to Kenya to serve for five years, and Justice Atuguba went to Sierra Leone. This shows that even when they’re supposed to be resting, the Commonwealth and the UN still tap into their expertise. So why don’t we utilise them to build our country instead of letting other nations benefit from them?” he questioned.

Prof. Ansa-Asare also noted that increasing the retirement age could discourage the practice of judges allegedly altering their birth dates to remain in service longer.

Retirement age of 70 for judges is fine – Justice Adjei https://www.adomonline.com/retirement-age-of-70-for-judges-is-fine-justice-adjei/ Tue, 17 Jun 2025 09:20:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545401 Supreme Court nominee, Justice Sir Dennis Adjei, says Ghana’s mandatory retirement age of 70 for judges should not be extended, citing the intense workload on the bench and its toll on the health of justices.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 17, Justice Adjei dismissed calls for constitutional amendments to increase the retirement age for Supreme Court justices.

“In Ghana, the 70 is okay, because people go home [after retirement] and within two years, they die because of the volume of work that we do,” he stated.

Responding to a question on why Ghana should not emulate jurisdictions like the United States where federal judges serve for life, Justice Adjei clarified that the systems are fundamentally different.

He explained that in the U.S., judges can opt for a “senior judge status” from age 65, allowing them to reduce their caseloads significantly while still remaining on the bench.

“They have senior judge status… You may decide to sit either one-third or half of your volume of work. And if you become 80 or 90 [years], the number of cases you sit on is up to you,” he said.

“But just in 2009, the UK increased their retirement age to 75.”

Justice Adjei maintained that Ghana’s judicial workload is too demanding to justify an extension.

He noted that judges often endure heavy schedules that take a physical toll over the years, making timely retirement a matter of wellbeing.

Earlier during the vetting, Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe also made it clear that he does not support calls to review the retirement age for judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal from 70 to 75.

Justice Dzamefe said he strongly believes the current retirement age of 70 should be maintained.

“I will not agree with sending the retirement ages of Supreme Court or Appeal Court judges to 75. No,” he said. “The retirement age as at now is 70. Superior court judges retire on their salaries.”

He explained that traditionally, age and experience were important factors in judicial work, but technology has changed that reality.

“Formerly, you need to be advanced in age to get the experience and the exposure so that when you give judgment, it is respected. It is a solid judgment because you’re adding personal experience to the legal knowledge you have,” he said.

“But of late, technology has made it such that what you needed 60 or 70 years to know, technology can make it available to you very early,” he explained. “So personally, my opinion is to keep it at 70. That is my opinion, not 75.”

SML threatens legal action against OSP https://www.adomonline.com/sml-threatens-legal-action-against-osp/ Mon, 16 Jun 2025 09:54:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2544955 Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) has threatened to initiate legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The Director of Support Services, Dr. Yaa Serwaa Sarpong, disclosed this in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

This follows a simultaneous raid on SML’s offices in Osu and Tema and what the company describes as a Rambo-style arrest of four employees and assault on others.

The OSP’s widely condemned operation took place on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

The company said key assets were seized during the operation, including servers, proprietary documents, gold analysers, and other technical equipment—many still under development and vital to their work with the GRA.

In light of this development, Dr. Sarpong stated she would be surprised if no legal action is taken, considering the losses caused to the company.

She said the following during the interview:
“If you do something like this, it will be surprising for you to think no legal action will be taken against you because this is a destruction of private property.
They took gold analysers, upstream equipment and others that do not belong to the government, so we are not even the people supposed to announce this. We will definitely go to court.”

In an earlier statement, SML indicated that it has, since March 2025, cooperated with the OSP regarding an ongoing probe, following a request.

The company added that it submitted all requested documentation within its contractual obligations on non-disclosure and confidentiality on 27th March 2025 and has remained available to respond to further enquiries.

Dr. Sarpong noted the raid, therefore, came as a surprise to them.

We’ll join nurses in next strike if… – Minority [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/well-join-nurses-in-next-strike-if-minority-listen/ Fri, 13 Jun 2025 17:16:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2544544

The Minority in Parliament is urging the government to honour its commitments under the May 2024 Conditions of Service agreement with the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, expressed solidarity with the nurses and warned that the Minority will join them should they resume strike action.

“We got to a position where four of their demands were to be implemented this year. With Parliament mediating, we guaranteed that at least two will be fulfilled. We’ve asked the nurses to deliberate and revert,” the Effiduase-Asokore MP stated.

He emphasized the Minority’s full support for the nurses, adding, “If this deal breaks down, the Minority will join them. This will not be mere politics—we’ve crossed the threshold of reasonableness, and entrenched positions may follow.”

His remarks come after the GRNMA suspended its week-long strike, which severely affected healthcare delivery nationwide.

Announcing the decision on Friday, June 13, GRNMA President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo said the suspension followed intensive negotiations with government officials and the intervention of the Parliamentary Health Committee.

She directed all members to resume work on Saturday, June 14, 2025, and disclosed that a follow-up meeting has been scheduled for June 26, 2025.

The GRNMA is demanding improved conditions of service and full implementation of previously agreed terms with the government.

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has stated that a re-negotiation of the conditions of service for the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is currently not under consideration.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. George Smith-Graham, expressed the Commission’s willingness to engage the nurses but noted that they have not been forthcoming.

“A review of the conditions of service, as far as I’m concerned, is not on the table for discussion at this moment. The only issue is the proposed shift in implementation to 2026,” he stated.

“They are an essential service and should have attached the same urgency to the matter as we did. The leadership should have met us to discuss our proposal for the shift, but they haven’t come back to us. This is making things difficult and does not augur well for the negotiations,” he added.

The GRNMA has been on strike since June 4, 2025, over the government’s failure to implement provisions of their 2024 Collective Agreement, which include allowances, incentives, and improved working conditions.

There have been several calls for the association’s leadership to suspend the strike and return to the negotiation table, but all efforts have proven unsuccessful.

However, the GRNMA has made it clear that although it remains open to discussions, it will not accept any attempt to reopen negotiations on issues that have already been finalised.

Dr. Asante-Krobea said the Minister’s actions and utterances have only worsened the situation and that his posture towards the striking nurses is disrespectful and unhelpful.

“I think the Minister owes the nurses an apology—not for anything they did directly, but for the kind of treatment they’re receiving. The Minister’s commentary has been highly insulting. You don’t tell nurses to return for renegotiation in such a dismissive tone. It’s unfair,” he said.

He made this known in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem.

Dr. Asante-Krobea accused the Health Ministry of “playing games” with the nurses, adding that the ministry has not demonstrated seriousness in addressing their grievances.

“They know the issues. The solution is right in front of them. Even if you can’t offer everything the nurses are demanding, you can meet them halfway. That’s how leadership works,” he added.

His remarks come in the wake of a press conference held by the Health Minister on June 10, where Mr. Akandoh appealed to retired nurses and midwives to volunteer temporarily in the hospitals while the strike persists.

FMR PRES NURSES SPEAKS

“Given the seriousness of the situation, government appeals to public-spirited retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services for a brief period pending the resolution of the impasse,” Mr. Akandoh said at the event.

Dr. Asante-Krobea found this appeal inappropriate and accused the Minister of shifting blame.

“If patients are dying, it is not the nurses who are killing them. It is the Minister’s inaction and poor handling of the matter. Nurses are only demanding what is due them. There is no crime in that,” he stressed.

He further described the Minister’s comments as “very regrettable and insulting” and urged him to return to the negotiation table with pragmatic and respectful solutions.

“The Minister doesn’t understand solidarity. You don’t govern by issuing appeals that lack empathy. You sit down, you listen, you negotiate in good faith,” Dr. Asante-Krobea added.

He concluded by encouraging the nurses to remain resolute and firm in their demands while urging the government to adopt a more plausible and constructive approach to resolving the strike.

We’re tired; we can’t return to work – Retired nurse to Health Minister [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/were-tired-we-cant-return-to-work-retired-nurse-to-health-minister-video/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 10:01:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543561 A retired nurse has criticised the Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, for urging retirees to volunteer their services as the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) intensifies.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the nurse, who served from 1982 until retirement, described the call as misplaced and impractical.

According to her, retirees are not physically capable of handling the current workload in health facilities and should not be seen as replacements for striking nurses.

“The situation is very painful. Some of us are very tired, and even in retirement, we can barely fend for ourselves. So when we return to work and we get sick or injured, who will cater for us?” she lamented.

She stressed that the government should prioritise addressing the welfare concerns of active nurses rather than shifting the burden to retired personnel.

“Some things are in bad taste, and we need to stop trying to put square pegs in round holes. We should give the nurses what is due them so they can return to work to save lives,” she added.

The Minister made the call during a press conference at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 10, acknowledging the impact of the ongoing strike, which began on June 4.

The strike has significantly affected healthcare delivery nationwide. Nurses and midwives are demanding the implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, which is yet to be enforced.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Sheikh Aremeyaw said candidates should not be afraid, as God has already equipped them with all they need to succeed.

He said no one should be afraid because “God has given you everything you need as far as this exam is concerned.”

He urged the students to remain confident and apply what they have learnt in school over the years.

“Be confident and do your best with what you have studied. Don’t let fear take over,” he said.

Sheikh Aremeyaw also cautioned candidates against engaging in any form of examination malpractice.

“Don’t cheat. Don’t allow any teacher to bring you answers or try to help you in ways that break the rules.”

He encouraged students to believe in God and trust that He will guide and protect them throughout the exam period.

“Believe that God will lead you, protect you, and help you write well. He will not leave you alone. You will come out with flying colours,” he added.

Sheikh Aremeyaw further appealed to teachers and invigilators to show love and support to the candidates by helping them stay calm and focused.

He urged teachers not to do anything against the laws of the exams but rather help the candidates do the right thing.

He also took the opportunity to pray for all the candidates, asking for God’s blessings, wisdom, and understanding.

“May God bless you, give you a retentive memory, and open your minds to remember what you have studied. When our children succeed, Ghana succeeds.”

Meanwhile, the 2025 BECE will run from Wednesday, June 11 to Wednesday, June 18.

According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), a total of 603,328 candidates have registered for this year’s examination. The number includes 297,250 males and 306,078 females from 20,395 schools nationwide.

This year’s figure marks a 5.99% increase over the 569,236 candidates who registered in 2024.

Gov’t has been unfair to striking nurses but… – Minority https://www.adomonline.com/govt-has-been-unfair-to-striking-nurses-but-minority/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 20:09:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543376 The Minority in Parliament has criticised the Mahama-led administration over its handling of the ongoing strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, accused the government of treating the association unfairly.

According to him, the demands of GRNMA are legitimate and justified, and he is at a loss as to why the government is reluctant to implement the 2024 Collective Agreement.

“The government has not been fair to these nurses. They have to sit down with them and listen to their concerns. Luckily, the mid-year budget review will be done this month or next month, so they should assure the nurses that their concerns will be captured,” he stated.

However, Dr. Afriyie appealed to the striking healthcare professionals for mercy and reasonableness in their negotiations, urging them to prioritise the welfare of Ghanaians.

“I will appeal to the nurses to consider accepting a phased implementation of their demands and return to work for the sake of Ghanaians,” he urged.

GRNMA laid down their tools on Tuesday, June 4, bringing vital healthcare services across more than 300 public hospitals and clinics in all 16 regions to a near standstill.

Thousands of patients have been left stranded, with emergency units operating minimally and scheduled surgeries postponed indefinitely.

We are receiving more bodies as a result of GRNMA’ strike – Mortuary workers https://www.adomonline.com/we-are-receiving-more-bodies-as-a-result-of-grnma-strike-mortuary-workers/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 17:18:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543332 The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has expressed serious concern over a sharp increase in the number of bodies being brought to mortuaries across the country.

This troubling development comes in the wake of the ongoing nationwide strike by members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

The strike began after a breakdown in negotiations with the government, which requested to delay the implementation of nurses’ new conditions of service—agreed in 2024—until 2026, a proposal the GRNMA has firmly rejected.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the General Secretary of MOWAG, Richard Kofi Jordan, described the current situation as “alarming.”

“Looking at the number of deaths compared to the past, the death toll has increased significantly. It’s not surprising because of the absence of nurses,” he stated.

Mr. Jordan noted that mortuaries across the country are overwhelmed by the surge in deaths, many of which he said are being reported from homes rather than hospitals.

“People are dying everywhere. Wherever there is a morgue, they are recording high deaths—and we attribute this to the nurses not being at post,” he said. “Many people are not going to the hospital, and that’s why we are seeing more bodies being brought from homes.”

He revealed that the situation is putting immense pressure and stress on mortuary workers.

“If it gets to a point where we can’t take it anymore, we’ll have no option but to refer families to the police station. It’s a serious issue that should never have gotten to this point—it should have been prevented.”

Mr. Jordan called on authorities to act swiftly to resolve the impasse, warning that the situation is becoming increasingly dire.

Meanwhile, the striking nurses have vowed not to return to work until the government implements the agreed conditions of service.

How can retirees with weak knees carry patients? – GRNMA questions Health Minister [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/how-can-retirees-with-weak-knees-carry-patients-grnma-questions-health-minister-audio/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 17:13:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543327 The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has ridiculed Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh’s appeal for retirees to volunteer their services amidst the ongoing strike.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, GRNMA Public Relations Officer Joseph Krampah questioned the efficiency and physical ability of the retirees, given their age.

“We thank the Minister for his efforts in trying to resolve our situation. But how can old people, some of whom are using walking sticks and have weak knees, take our jobs? How can they lift sick people? How many of these retirees do we even have?” he asked, amid subtle laughter.

The Minister made the appeal during a press conference on Tuesday, June 10, at the Jubilee House, acknowledging the impact of the strike which began on June 4.

The strike, which has severely affected healthcare delivery across the country, is aimed at demanding the implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, which is yet to be enforced.

Four unions — including the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG), the Professional Association of Psychiatric Nurses Ghana (PAPNG), and the National Association of Registered Midwives Ghana (NARM-GH) — have opted out.

However, Mr. Krampah emphasised that their withdrawal does not in any way undermine the strike’s impact and stressed the need for government to act in good faith.

“They know the solution. Instead of resolving the issue, they have decided to maneuver. The Minister is throwing dust into the eyes of Ghanaians. They can begin implementing parts of our conditions of service while discussions continue on the rest. It’s simple,” he said.

“They have seen the impact of the strike, even with some people opting out. If they’ve decided to turn a blind eye to our plight, then we will also remain adamant,” he added.

Sammy Darko clears the air on Ofori-Atta’s health claims [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/sammy-darko-clears-the-air-on-ofori-attas-health-claims-listen/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 15:59:00 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543243 The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has clarified that it has not received any medical report from former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta or his legal team, contrary to media claims.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, the Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the OSP, Sammy Darko, debunked reports indicating that the Office had been served with a medical report from the former minister.

This follows circulating reports that Mr. Ofori-Atta is battling cancer, with an alleged medical report making the rounds online.

According to Mr. Darko, what the OSP received cannot be classified as a medical report.

“That letter is not a medical report. I don’t understand why people keep calling it that. When you go to the hospital, there’s someone called a coordinator, and then there’s the doctor. The letter came from the coordinator, not the doctor,” he added.

He explained that the coordinator’s letter only mentioned that Mr. Ofori-Atta underwent a diagnostic procedure in March and that the planned surgery did not happen.

OSP ON KEN HOSPITAL LETTER

“Even that, they didn’t inform us about the diagnostic procedure. Later, when it was just three or four days to his expected return to Ghana, his lawyers wrote to us saying he couldn’t make it because he had surgery scheduled for 13th June.”

Mr. Darko further expressed disappointment that no proper medical report was submitted, only letters that lacked substantive details.

“He’s playing smart on us. No recent medical report has been submitted—only letters through his lawyers. If he was indeed unwell or undergoing surgery, why didn’t they provide full disclosure or documentation earlier?” he questioned.

He also rejected claims that the OSP acted unfairly by declaring Mr. Ofori-Atta wanted.

“Now the lawyers are saying they sent letters, but to us, those were not sufficient and definitely not medical reports,” he stressed.

Mr. Ofori-Atta is currently under investigation by the OSP for suspected corruption and related offenses during his tenure as Minister for Finance from 2017 to 2024.

Why OSP travelled to UK for Airbus interrogation – Sammy Darko explains [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/why-osp-travelled-to-uk-for-airbus-interrogation-sammy-darko-explains-audio/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 15:57:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543240 The Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Sammy Darko, has defended the office’s decision to declare former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta wanted, amidst criticism from sections of the public.

Some have argued that the OSP should have travelled to the United States to engage Mr. Ofori-Atta, just as it went to the United Kingdom to investigate Samuel Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama, in connection with the Airbus scandal.

But in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Darko clarified that the two cases are fundamentally different.

“An INTERPOL red notice was issued for Samuel Mahama and the three others involved in the Airbus case,” he said.

He explained that the OSP had no choice but to travel to the UK because the British authorities were unwilling to extradite the suspects, who are British citizens.

“The UK made it clear they wouldn’t extradite their citizens. That’s why we had to go there to continue the investigations,” he noted.

According to Mr. Darko, the suspects in the Airbus scandal—three white individuals and one black man, Samuel Mahama—were all British citizens and not Ghanaians.

“You can’t compare the situation to Ken Ofori-Atta. These individuals are not Ghanaians. Their country wouldn’t let them come to Ghana, so we had to make arrangements to interview them there. If they had travelled elsewhere, they risked being arrested because of the red notice,” he explained.

He also revealed that the OSP investigated former President Mahama for seven years during the Airbus case.

“When he was invited by the OSP, he made himself available. He was investigated. There was no fuss,” Mr. Darko added.

He expressed disappointment at the backlash regarding Ken Ofori-Atta’s case.

“Where were all these critics when INTERPOL notices were issued for the Airbus suspects? Nobody complained then. So why now? This is pure hypocrisy,” he said.

Mr. Darko dismissed the comparisons as misleading.

“People are just comparing apples to oranges. Some Ghanaians simply want to comfort themselves when the law catches up with them. But we are professionals. We are doing our work in accordance with the law,” he stated.

He concluded by questioning the basis of the public criticism.

“If non-Ghanaians could be placed on an INTERPOL red notice, how much more a Ghanaian like Ken Ofori-Atta?”

Who gets arrested through Zoom? – OSP justifies why Ofori-Atta must return to Ghana  https://www.adomonline.com/who-gets-arrested-through-zoom-osp-justifies-why-ofori-atta-must-return-to-ghana/ Tue, 10 Jun 2025 13:00:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2543174 The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has justified its insistence that former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, must return to Ghana for interrogation.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Director of Strategy, Research and Communication at the OSP, Sammy Darko, clarified that the OSP cannot take a caution statement via Zoom, stressing that no one has ever been arrested virtually in Ghana.

“It seems Mr. Ofori-Atta wants to dictate to us how to handle his case, arrest, and interrogation—but the law doesn’t allow that. Which Ghanaian can do that at a police station?” he asked.

Drawing comparisons, Mr. Darko referenced Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi), Chairman of the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region, to highlight the principle of cooperation with law enforcement.

“Why didn’t Wontumi resist or refuse to honour the interrogation, or tell the police how to deal with his case?” he queried.
“Before a caution statement can be taken, you must be arrested. Has anybody been arrested through Zoom? How is that possible?” he added.

He emphasized that a caution statement can only be taken after a formal arrest, which has not yet occurred in the case of Mr. Ofori-Atta.

“He is telling us to take his caution statement, as if anyone has told him that’s what we want to do. He is a suspect and cannot dictate how the case is handled. A caution statement can only be taken after an arrest,” Mr. Darko insisted.

He further explained that the caution statement is part of the pre-trial process and that the suspect has the right to remain silent or deny the allegations when it is taken.

“Even with a caution statement, he can decide to speak or not. That’s all part of the process before trial,” he added.

Mr. Darko’s comments come in response to criticism over the OSP’s refusal to conduct the interrogation virtually.

Ken Ofori-Atta has been in the news over the past week after the OSP on Monday, June 2, re-declared him a fugitive. The former minister failed to return to the country to respond to charges relating to alleged corruption and abuse of office during his tenure from 2017 to 2024.

The OSP has insisted that efforts to engage the former minister have been met with non-cooperation, noting that no official medical documentation has been submitted to justify his extended stay abroad.

GPRTU threatens nationwide strike over GH¢1 fuel levy https://www.adomonline.com/gprtu-threatens-nationwide-strike-over-gh%c2%a21-fuel-levy/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 16:31:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2542142 The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the introduction of the GH¢1 fuel levy.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Public Relations Officer Abbas Ibrahim Moro stated that commercial transport operators would not have implemented the 15% fare reduction had they anticipated the current developments.

“If they knew they had this under their sleeves, they should have told us, because for us to reduce transport fares and they bring this in, they haven’t been fair to us. The GH¢1 is very significant and the timing is wrong,” he stated.

Expressing strong opposition, Mr. Moro warned that the GPRTU would give the government until June 10 to withdraw the levy and initiate stakeholder engagement.

He lamented that the levy would bring untold hardship to commercial drivers and transport business owners nationwide.

According to him, the decision to implement the levy was taken without adequate consultation and risks pushing many operators out of business due to rising operational costs.

“We are therefore calling on the government to reverse the levy immediately and engage us and stakeholders on the way forward. If our call is not heeded, we will be compelled to take industrial action and park our vehicles on June 10, 2025.

“We urge the government to consider the impact of the levy on the transport sector and the consequences of our action on the economy, and engage us in meaningful deliberations to help address challenges in the energy sector,” he said.

The new levy, which has sparked mixed reactions, follows the approval of the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill, 2025, by Parliament.

The bill imposes a GH¢1 increase in the levy on petroleum products and is expected to generate an estimated GH¢5.7 billion in revenue.

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has said that the revenue generated will be used to reduce the country’s ballooning energy sector debt, which currently stands at $3.1 billion.

He added that an additional $1.2 billion will also be needed to procure fuel for thermal power generation in 2025.

E-Levy was a misplaced priority but GH¢1 fuel levy is different – Prof. Bokpin https://www.adomonline.com/e-levy-was-a-misplaced-priority-but-gh%c2%a21-fuel-levy-is-different-prof-bokpin/ Thu, 05 Jun 2025 09:40:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541880 Economist and Professor of Finance at the University of Ghana, Godfred Bokpin, has explained that there is a significant difference between the E-levy and the newly introduced energy levy.

He argued that, considering the government’s strategy to develop the digital economy, which is expected to grow faster than the traditional economy, the future is increasingly digital, and Ghana needs to create the right environment to support that growth.

“The NDC government, after campaigning against the E-levy and eventually scrapping it, views the E-levy as a misplaced priority. That view has not changed. The E-levy and the energy levy are completely different.

“The impact of introducing the E-levy would have harmed the future of the digital economy far more than this new levy will, even though both have value chain effects,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.

He stressed the need for fiscal discipline at this time and welcomed the removal of the E-levy to allow the digital economy to thrive without additional burdens.

“Given the current circumstances, including the recent strengthening of the cedi, one could make a case for this as a temporary intervention. What Ghanaians needed at that time was more fiscal discipline,” he added.

Prof. Bokpin acknowledged that the introduction of the energy levy is not an optimal solution but said it could provide some temporary relief.

“Considering the challenges in the energy sector and the broader impact on the economy, this levy targets the value chain and could bring some relief. It’s a difficult decision, but some interventions have helped stabilize the situation.”

He reiterated that his earlier concerns about the E-levy remain unchanged despite the introduction of the new levy.

“My argument during the introduction of the E-levy hasn’t changed with the introduction of this levy.”

His comments follow the passage of the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which authorizes a GH¢1 increase in petroleum product levies.

According to Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the measure aims to help settle $3.1 billion in energy sector arrears and raise an additional $1.2 billion to procure fuel for thermal generation in 2025.

EOCO subjected Wontumi to ill-treatment, they nearly killed him – Paul Yandoh https://www.adomonline.com/eoco-subjected-wontumi-to-ill-treatment-they-nearly-killed-him-paul-yandoh/ Tue, 03 Jun 2025 20:17:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541459 The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has alleged that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) subjected party chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, to harsh and inhumane treatment during his detention.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Yandoh claimed Wontumi was left visibly traumatised after spending six days in EOCO custody.

“He was shaking and shivering. He couldn’t even sit properly when he was released. Chairman Wontumi has not even shared the full trauma he went through, but so many things have changed about him,” Yandoh said.

He further alleged that Wontumi went without food during his detention because he feared for his life.

“For six days, he didn’t eat. He told me he couldn’t eat because the person who brought him food had covered his face,” Yandoh added.

Mr. Yandoh claimed that EOCO officers kept the NPP regional chairman in a cramped space and treated him poorly, describing their conduct as “mafia tactics.”

“They wanted to kill him. They treated him like a criminal. But Chairman Wontumi is a genuine person, and he told them everything they wanted to know because he has nothing to hide,” he claimed.

According to Yandoh, despite the smiles Wontumi wore after his release, he was still suffering and forced himself to appear strong for the cameras.

“People thought he was okay because he smiled and waved. But I was close to him after his release, and I know what he was going through. He even raised one of his legs to show he was fine, but in truth, he was limping,” he recounted.

Chairman Wontumi was released from EOCO custody on bail after meeting conditions set at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified.

His arrest sparked strong criticism from within the NPP, with several party members describing the bail conditions as excessive and politically motivated.

Despite the ordeal, Yandoh said Wontumi remains ready to cooperate with any investigations. “He is innocent and has nothing to fear,” he said.

Wontumi’s detention: Why GH¢50m bail is not excessive – Martin Kpebu [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/wontumis-detention-why-gh%c2%a250m-bail-is-not-excessive-martin-kpebu-video/ Mon, 02 Jun 2025 16:37:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2541060 Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has defended the GH¢50 million bail imposed on the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to him, the amount is not excessive considering the nature of the allegations against Wontumi, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kpebu explained that since the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has not disclosed the specific amount of money involved in the alleged fraud, it is difficult to argue that the GH¢50 million bail is excessive.

“I don’t think the GH¢50 million bail condition is too excessive. We can fault EOCO for not coming out clearly with the amount involved in the alleged fraud. If they had, maybe we would realise that the GH¢50 million is even small,” he said.

He added that EOCO should have been more transparent with the financial details of the charges to help the public better understand the rationale behind the bail amount.

“To me, that’s where EOCO erred. They should have told us exactly how much money is at stake in all these fraud allegations and other allegations,” he stressed.

Mr. Kpebu expressed surprise that some members of the public are calling the bail excessive when, in his view, the nature of the allegations suggests the amount could be justified.

“I’m even shocked people are making noise that the GH¢50 million is too much. Wontumi has done a lot of things – although most of them are grapevine talk – but the charges are plenty,” he said.

He further noted that Wontumi is not the only person in Ghana’s legal history to have received such a high bail amount.

Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi’s legal team has withdrawn a motion filed on May 30, 2025, seeking a variation of the bail conditions.

The motion was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3, but was formally withdrawn on Monday, June 2.

Wontumi had initially challenged the GH¢50 million bail set by EOCO, arguing through his lawyers that the amount was excessive and could frustrate his release.

However, his lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has since confirmed that all documentation for the two justified sureties has now been completed.

Mr. Nimako, who is also a lawyer, accused Mr. Appiah-Kubi, lead counsel for embattled NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, of throwing him under the bus.

He made the disclosure on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, expressing concern over Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s public statement that he was unaware of a variation application Mr. Nimako had filed, which allegedly frustrated the bail process for Chairman Wontumi.

“I spoke with him before applying, and he later came out to say the process had been frustrated, which was unfair. How do you throw this in the air? It is not right and fair.”

Lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi

“I had spoken to you prior to filing, then you later say you are not aware. I have blocked his number because if I can have a meeting with you in confidence and you act this way in public, then it means I cannot talk to you again—so I have blocked his number,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi has been under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for alleged financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

Although he was granted GH₵50 million bail with two justified sureties on May 28, delays in meeting the bail terms stalled his release despite conditions being met by May 30.

To expedite the process, Mr. Nimako on Friday, May 30, filed an application requesting the court to reconsider the bail terms, based on grounds outlined in an accompanying affidavit.

The motion was scheduled for hearing on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

However, on Monday, June 2, 2025, Mr. Nimako withdrew the application while Chairman Wontumi continued to remain in EOCO custody amidst agitation by NPP members.

“If by 6pm Friday, they fail to release Chairman Wontumi, you will see what will happen in this country—things will escalate and create problems,” he said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.

He stressed the importance of state agencies operating within the constitution and the rule of law.

“We have laws in this country that guide what to do when a suspect is arrested. The person must be taken to court and due process followed. We cannot allow anyone to take the law into their own hands.”

When asked about the seriousness of his statement and its consequences, Mr. Baafi said,

“We are ready to die for this country. If the security services want to pick me up for saying this, so be it. We want them to kill all of us if that’s what it takes to protect the democracy of this country. And that is what we will do.”

Mr. Baafi also suggested that some people within the NPP and the country are prepared to make serious sacrifices to protect democracy.

He indicated that they have made thorough preparations and are ready for any eventuality if Wontumi’s detention continues unjustly.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, shortly after leaving the CID headquarters in Accra. His arrest has sparked widespread criticism from within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He remains in custody after failing to meet the bail conditions set at GH₵50 million with two justified sureties on Wednesday, amid reports of ill health.

On Thursday, members of the Minority in Parliament and some NPP supporters staged a protest at EOCO’s headquarters, describing the bail conditions as excessive and unreasonable.

His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, revealed earlier that some individuals who initially agreed to act as sureties later backed out after their names were made public.

Only Mahama, brother can bail Wontumi – NPP Man [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/only-mahama-brother-can-bail-wontumi-npp-man-audio/ Fri, 30 May 2025 16:20:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2540331 The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has stated that only President John Mahama and his brother, Ibrahim Mahama, can secure bail for the Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Yandoh emphasised that the bail amount is excessive and expressed doubt that anyone else can afford it.

He therefore appealed to the two brothers to assist in securing the sureties required for Chairman Wontumi’s release.

“Only John Dramani Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama have that kind of money. We are on our knees begging Ibrahim Mahama and his brother to make the money available for Wontumi’s bail,” he stated.

Chairman Wontumi was arrested by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Tuesday, shortly after leaving the CID headquarters in Accra. His arrest has drawn widespread criticism from within the NPP.

He remains in custody after failing to meet his bail conditions of GH₵50 million with two justified sureties on Wednesday, amid reports of ill health.

On Thursday, the Minority in Parliament and some members of the NPP stormed EOCO’s headquarters to protest the bail conditions, describing them as excessive and unreasonable.

His lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, in an earlier interview, disclosed that some individuals who initially agreed to help later became hesitant after their names were made public.

However, Mr. Yandoh asserted that NPP members are living in fear, and given the intense scrutiny anyone who offers to bail Chairman Wontumi will face, no one is willing to provide sureties—even if they can.

Wontumi case: Don’t crucify suspect before charges are filed – Appiah-Kubi to Srem-Sai https://www.adomonline.com/wontumi-case-dont-crucify-suspect-before-charges-are-filed-appiah-kubi-to-srem-sai/ Fri, 30 May 2025 11:44:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2540184 Andy Appiah-Kubi, lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed disappointment in Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, over his public remarks regarding ongoing investigations.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Appiah-Kubi criticised the Deputy AG for making prejudicial comments while the matter is still under investigation.

According to him, no formal charges have been filed against Wontumi yet, and the case is still under investigation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

“As we speak, no official charges have been brought against my client. EOCO is still in the preliminary stages of investigation.

“The only issue under probe, as I understand it, is whether some of Wontumi’s dealings have caused financial loss to the state. That’s the first stage, not the conclusion,” he stated.

Appiah-Kubi stressed that the proper legal processes must be followed and warned against trial by public opinion.

“Prosecution is done in a court of law, not on social media or in public statements. “It’s very shocking and disappointing that such sensitive information was released to the public before we were officially served. This undermines justice and the human rights of my client” he noted.

He also reacted to the Deputy AG’s post on X (formerly Twitter), where Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that Wontumi is under investigation for offences including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

In his post, Justice Srem-Sai wrote that Bernard Antwi Boasiako is under investigation for “various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering).”

The Deputy AG added that the investigation is running alongside asset recovery processes to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies believe to be proceeds of crime.

But Appiah-Kubi believes the public statement was premature and unnecessary.

“At the end of the day, if it turns out that the charges are not even valid, the damage would have already been done,” he argued.

“We expect the office of the Attorney General to act with professionalism and fairness, not be influenced by sentiment or public pressure.”

He further disclosed that Wontumi remains in custody after failing to meet his bail conditions.

He noted that efforts are underway to secure sureties and secure his release.

“Our focus now is to meet the bail conditions, but until then, let’s not crucify him before the facts are laid bare in court.”

Appiah-Kubi concluded by calling on the Attorney General’s office to uphold justice without political or emotional interference.

“Let justice be done according to law—not based on social media narratives.”

Wontumi’s bail: Some withdrew sureties after… – Lawyer [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/wontumis-bail-some-withdrew-sureties-after-lawyer-listen/ Fri, 30 May 2025 11:42:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2540135 Andy Appiah-Kubi, lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has expressed concern over his continued detention.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Appiah-Kubi said they were hopeful Chairman Wontumi would secure the required sureties for his bail, but efforts so far have been unsuccessful.

He disclosed that some individuals who initially agreed to help later became hesitant after their names were made public.

“In such cases, mentioning names doesn’t help because yesterday some people who earlier agreed to help later became reluctant and withdrew because their names were made public. So it’s better not to put out names,” he said.

“But when everything is settled and we have permission to publish the names, we will do so,” he added.

The former Asante Akyem North MP’s comments follow reports that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had secured all the necessary sureties for Chairman Wontumi’s release.

Dr Bawumia’s aide, Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, stated in a social media post that the required documents had been submitted and were awaiting verification by the relevant authorities.

However, Mr Appiah-Kubi said he could neither confirm nor deny the development, though he acknowledged they were expecting some individuals to arrive on Friday morning.

“We are still here waiting, and I am praying that the person bringing the sureties comes. I haven’t had any information regarding Dr Bawumia’s sureties, but I know someone is coming,” he stated.

While EOCO has yet to officially disclose full details of his arrest, Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai has confirmed that the outspoken politician is being investigated for alleged fraud, money laundering, and international organised crime.

On Thursday, the Minority in Parliament and some members of the NPP stormed EOCO’s headquarters to protest the bail conditions, describing them as excessive and unreasonable.

My contract began in 2016 – Fred Kwarteng challenges Foreign Affairs Minister https://www.adomonline.com/my-contract-began-in-2016-fred-kwarteng-challenges-foreign-affairs-minister/ Thu, 29 May 2025 17:21:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2539980 The suspended head of IT Ghana’s embassy in Washington, DC, has rejected claims by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the timeline of his recruitment and involvement in a visa and passport fraud scheme.

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Mr. Kwarteng was recruited in August 2017 and was recently dismissed over allegations of creating an unauthorised payment link on the embassy’s website to defraud visa and passport applicants.

But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Kwarteng insisted his official engagement began on December 16, 2016, and was renewed annually under a temporary contract.

“I started working with the embassy on some projects between 2013 and 2016. My official temporary contract letter is dated December 16, 2016, and it has been renewed every year since,” he said.

Mr. Kwarteng added, “Even my termination letter from the embassy clearly states that my contract began on December 16, 2016. So I don’t know why the Minister mentioned August 2017.”

KWARTENG SPEAKS

In a social media post on May 26, 2025, the Minister stated that Mr. Kwarteng, a local staff, created an unauthorized link on the embassy’s website that redirected applicants to his private company, Ghana Travel Consultants (GTC).

He is accused of charging extra fees and pocketing the proceeds without the Ministry’s knowledge.

Mr. Kwarteng, however, refuted the fraud allegations against him but maintained that there are discrepancies in the recruitment timeline stated by the Ministry.

“I can’t speak to why the Ministry said August 2017, but the official documents in my possession say December 16, 2016,” he stated.

]]> I see nothing wrong with EOCO’s probe – Chairman Wontumi’s lawyer [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/i-see-nothing-wrong-with-eocos-probe-chairman-wontumis-lawyer-audio/ Thu, 29 May 2025 11:33:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2539784 Andy Appiah-Kubi, lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) cannot be faulted for carrying out their duties.

The former Asante Akyem North MP stated that there is nothing wrong with the ongoing investigation, despite the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service having previously questioned his client.

Chairman Wontumi’s arrest by EOCO on Tuesday, shortly after leaving the CID headquarters in Accra, has drawn widespread criticism from within the ranks of the NPP.

He remains in custody after failing to meet his bail conditions of GH₵50 million with two justified sureties on Wednesday, amid reports of ill health.

While EOCO has not officially disclosed the full details of his arrest, sources suggest that Wontumi is under investigation over alleged financial transactions involving the Ghana Export-Import (EXIM) Bank.

However, lawyer Appiah-Kubi in an interview on Adom FMs morning show Dwaso Nsem, stated that the charges from the CID may differ from those filed by EOCO.

“Since both institutions have the legal mandate to probe these issues, I see nothing wrong with it. When we went, he answered all questions he was asked, so the investigation is still ongoing and nothing stops them.

What is left for us to do is to push through the bail and sureties that need to be justified, and we are working on that,” he stated.

Speaking on the bail progress, the lawyer confirmed that several individuals, though unnamed, have come forward to assist.

“I’m looking forward to them bringing the necessary documents for verification so we can proceed, but we are ready to avail ourselves for further investigations,” he added.
