Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Apea disclosed that Mr. Essien suffered a severe back injury while in custody.

“He didn’t have an accident caused by prison officers or an attack by anyone. He went to play football with some inmates, and on their way back, he just screamed in pain, and that was it,” he said.

According to him, the injury has left Mr. Essien in constant pain.

“He’s in a brace 24 hours a day because his back is really hurting. He’s on pain medication, and even the doctors have confirmed how sick he is,” Dr. Apea added.

Beyond the physical pain, Dr. Apea said the emotional toll is also visible.

Dr. Apea on Ato Essien's health

“When you see him, you realize this is someone who has been tried and tested. Emotionally, he looks like a man broken for something he is innocent of. I even spoke with some of the inmates during our visit. This man is suffering, and he needs help,” he stated.

Dr. Apea insisted that from the evidence he has reviewed, no theft occurred, contrary to what has been reported.

“There was no theft as it has been portrayed. What shocks me the most is how the third accused in the case was acquitted. It baffles me.”

He said his focus is not on the banks involved in the matter but on the plight of Mr. Essien.

Ato Essien was convicted in December 2022 for stealing over GH₵90 million from Capital Bank.

He avoided jail after the court accepted an agreement between him and the Attorney-General for him to refund the money to the state. However, he was later jailed after failing to meet the payment terms.

MP makes damning allegations against Hannah Bissiw [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/mp-makes-damning-allegations-against-hannah-bissiw-listen/ Fri, 18 Jul 2025 10:52:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556871 Trobu Member of Parliament (MP) Gloria Owusu has alleged that the Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei, may be complicit in the alleged disappearance of 33 seized excavators.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotei, who also serves as the National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), recently revealed that 33 out of 40 excavators seized during an anti-galamsey operation had gone missing.

According to her, the machines were initially left at the illegal mining sites due to the absence of lowbed trucks for transportation. However, upon returning the next day, only seven machines remained.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, MP Gloria Owusu questioned the credibility of that account, claiming that there are widespread allegations suggesting Dr. Bissiw-Kotei facilitates the release of the seized excavators to their owners in exchange for bribes.

“How is it that Hannah Bissiw will go and seize excavators, and then within 24 hours, she will come and tell us 33 are missing? The allegation is that she takes GH¢200,000 from the excavator owners and releases them,” the lawmaker claimed.

Calls are growing for a full-scale investigation into the matter as public concern mounts over accountability in the fight against illegal mining.

Trobu MP demands answers from Hannah Bissiw over ‘missing’ driver [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/trobu-mp-demands-answers-from-hannah-bissiw-over-missing-driver-listen/ Fri, 18 Jul 2025 09:53:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556838 The Member of Parliament for Trobu Constituency, Gloria Owusu, has raised concerns over the unexplained disappearance of Clement Ofori Addo, a man she claims was recently employed as a driver by National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Women’s Organiser, Dr. Hannah Bissiw.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the MP alleged that Mr. Addo was dismissed from his job about four days ago. Since then, none of his family members have seen or heard from him, she said.

“I want to ask Hannah Bissiw where her driver, Clement, is. At the moment, Hannah Bissiw is out of the country, and his driver is nowhere to be found. In due course, Ghanaians will hear from his family. Even if he has committed an offence, where is he?” Mrs. Owusu questioned.

The MP further drew parallels with a past incident involving former Deputy Communications Minister Victoria Hammah, whose private conversations were leaked by her driver, suggesting that the current situation may also warrant public scrutiny.

She, however, urged Mr. Addo to reach out to his family if his disappearance was voluntary.

The circumstances surrounding the driver’s disappearance remain unclear.

Dr. Apea defends Ato Essien over GH¢90 million Capital Bank funds https://www.adomonline.com/dr-apea-defends-ato-essien-over-gh%c2%a290-million-capital-bank-funds/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 13:25:11 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556510 Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, Dr. John Apea, has defended convicted former Capital Bank founder William Ato Essien, stating that the GH¢90 million the state accused him of stealing was not stolen.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Apea explained:
“That GH¢90 million is extremely contentious to begin with. The case was made that liquidity support was given by the Bank of Ghana to Capital Bank, the bank he founded. I’m here to tell you that this liquidity support was not free money; it was a loan—a commercial loan at 28 percent per annum.”

He said the GH¢90 million was part of a liquidity support loan from the Bank of Ghana to Capital Bank, not a bailout or grant.

“Until Capital Bank was closed, they were paying GH¢14.4 million every month without default,” he added, claiming the bank had already repaid GH¢308 million before its closure,” he added.

Dr. Apea also stressed that Ato Essien was neither the Managing Director nor a member of the bank’s management team, but only acted as a facilitator in securing the loan.

APEA ON ATO FEE

Regarding the GH¢90 million restitution, Dr. Apea explained that the figure included a 300 percent interest slapped on what he described as a legal finder’s fee.

“He took GH¢27.5 million as a legal fee, which was lawful. Then they added 300 percent interest to it—making it GH¢62.5 million. Add the GH¢27.5 million to the interest, and that’s how they arrived at GH¢90 million,” he said.

“If you say Ato is paying back GH¢90 million, 62.5 million out of that was interest. Who puts 300 percent interest on a legal fee someone has taken?”

Dr. Apea argued that it was wrong to say Ato Essien committed a crime based on that transaction.

“If you claim the person made a mistake, let him pay just the GH¢27.5 million. But to say he has committed a crime is unfair,” he asserted.

Ato Essien was convicted in December 2022 for stealing over GH¢90 million belonging to Capital Bank.

He avoided a custodial sentence after the court accepted an agreement between him and the Attorney-General for him to refund the money in installments.

We’re fighting for justice, not just Ato Essien – Dr. Apea defends clemency petition [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/were-fighting-for-justice-not-just-ato-essien-dr-apea-defends-clemency-petition-listen/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 11:17:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556440 The Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, Dr. John Apea, has explained why he is petitioning for clemency on behalf of William Ato Essien, the jailed founder of the defunct Capital Bank.

According to Dr. Apea, the petition is not based on Mr. Essien’s wealth or business success, but rather on humanitarian grounds and concerns about justice.

“This is not about money. Ato Essien is not sitting on huge wealth, as many people assume. He’s like any other prisoner who has been convicted and is now battling for his life,” Dr. Apea said.

He revealed in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, that Mr. Essien is currently in a wheelchair and facing serious health issues.

“We are not just asking for justice; we are asking for sympathy from President Mahama because Ato Essien is in a very bad state of health,” he stressed.

Dr. Apea justifies cleemcy petition for Ato Essien

Dr. Apea also pointed out that Mr. Essien lacked the financial capacity to hire top legal representation.

“It’s not like he had the best legal team money can buy. We are fighting not just for him, but for every prisoner who may have been wronged,” he added.

He urged Ghanaians to look beyond the surface and reconsider what really happened.

“At first, I thought he had stolen the money, like many people believe. But after reviewing the evidence and speaking to him, I now see things differently. There was no theft as widely assumed.”

Dr. Apea clarified that he had no personal or professional relationship with Mr. Essien until recently.

“Back when all this happened, I was in the UK and only heard of him through the media. I didn’t know him personally.”

Mr. Essien was convicted in December 2022 for stealing over GH₵90 million from Capital Bank. He initially avoided a custodial sentence after the court approved a deal between him and the Attorney-General, in which he agreed to pay the amount in restitution.

However, in 2023, he was jailed for failing to honour the terms of the agreement.

Dr. Apea said the clemency petition is a plea for both justice and mercy, grounded in compassion and a belief in rehabilitation.

“This is not just about one man. It’s about creating a justice system that is fair and humane,” he said.

What Ato Essien told me when I visited him at Nsawam prison – Commonwealth Head of Mission https://www.adomonline.com/what-ato-essien-told-me-when-i-visited-him-at-nsawam-prison-commonwealth-head-of-mission/ Thu, 17 Jul 2025 11:15:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556464 Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, Dr. John Apea, has opened up about a recent visit to jailed former Capital Bank founder, William Ato Essien, at the Nsawam Prison.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Dr. Apea shared his emotional observations of Mr. Essien’s physical and emotional state.

“When I visited him, he was in a wheelchair. He looks like a broken man. There is a difference between physical illness and emotional torture. And if you see him, you’ll know he’s going through both,” Dr. Apea said.

He recounted his conversation with Mr. Essien during the visit, noting that despite his condition, the former banker remained spiritually grounded.

“He told me, ‘Every day is a blessing, not a pain,’ even though he is very sick and cannot walk,” Dr. Apea revealed.

He added that Mr. Essien’s health has deteriorated significantly and that he struggles physically, but has drawn closer to God in this period of hardship.

“His faith in God has deepened. He said no one can truly help you unless God steps in. He sees this moment as an opportunity to reconnect with his Maker,” he noted.

Dr. Apea stressed that his support for Ato Essien stems from a deep spiritual conviction.

“This is not by my might. It is God who is pushing me to help my brother because we are our brother’s keeper.”

He also cautioned against public judgment, saying, “Today it is Ato Essien. Tomorrow, it could be a journalist or a pastor who has been wrongly accused.”

Touching on the circumstances that landed Essien in jail, Dr. Apea insisted, “We must go back to the facts. Ato Essien did not steal any money.”

Mr. Essien was convicted in December 2022 for the theft of over GH₵90 million from the now-defunct Capital Bank. He initially avoided a custodial sentence after the court accepted a payment agreement he reached with the Attorney-General to refund the stolen funds.

However, he was later jailed after failing to comply with the payment terms, as ruled by Justice Eric Kyei Baffour.

A sitting MP’s husband was part of my attackers – Hawa Koomson alleges [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/a-sitting-mps-husband-was-part-of-my-attackers-hawa-koomson-alleges-audio/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 20:28:27 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556256 Former Awutu Senya East MP, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has alleged that the husband of her successor, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, was among those who physically assaulted her during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

According to her, she recognised two or three individuals involved in the attack, including the husband of a sitting MP, although she could not confirm his name.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mrs. Koomson said some of the attackers were from Kasoa and described the incident as a targeted attempt on her life.

“All I saw was that they were advancing towards me. Someone was holding a cutlass, declaring that they would finish me today. There was this other short guy with an orange sleeve wearing a jacket and camouflage shorts, and he usually walks with the MP’s husband,” she alleged.

She recalled that former Okaikoi South MP, Darkoa Newman, who was with her at the time, was visibly shaken and urged her to flee, but there was no escape route.

The altercation, which occurred at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling centre in Odorkor on Friday, July 11, 2025, temporarily disrupted voting and triggered an increased security presence.

The former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture maintained that she had no prior knowledge of any planned violence and would have avoided the event had she received any warning.

“There were more than 30 guys coming towards me, and I couldn’t have faced them as a woman,” she said.

The violence reportedly began when a group of unidentified individuals overpowered police officers stationed at the polling centre.

Viral videos captured the moment Hawa Koomson used pepper spray on her attackers—an act she insists was in self-defense. One individual is seen stepping on her groin after she fell to the ground, moments before police rescued her.

Addressing criticism of her actions, she said:
“I couldn’t have watched on and done nothing for them to kill me because one of them had a gun, and I’m grateful to God it wasn’t fired. I could have died.”

She further revealed a history of political attacks against her.
“Exactly a year and a month ago, my son was stabbed at a registration centre unprovoked,” she said.

Mrs. Koomson has called on authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service says investigations are ongoing, although no arrests have been made yet.

Mahama and Vice President haven’t called me since the assault – Hawa Koomson [Watch] https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-and-vice-president-havent-called-me-since-the-assault-hawa-koomson-watch/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 16:47:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2556137 Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has expressed disappointment that neither President John Dramani Mahama nor Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reached out to her following the assault she suffered during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Madam Koomson said she was shocked by the silence, particularly from the Vice President, who is also a woman.

“As we speak, not even one of them has called me. I am very surprised that Vice President Naana Jane, as a woman, has not even called to check on me. I expected better ”she stated.

She noted that apart from members of her own political party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), no top official from the government had contacted her.

“Not even the President or his Vice has shown concern. But today, we say we have a sitting female Vice President,” she lamented.

However, Madam Koomson acknowledged that the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, had reached out to her.

“He called and told me that they are taking the matter seriously. He said he has instructed the regional police commander to investigate thoroughly and bring those behind the attack to book,” she revealed.

She called on the Interior Minister, whom she described as her “brother”, to ensure swift action is taken to punish the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent.

“I expect Muntaka, my own brother, to ensure the right thing is done. The men who assaulted me must face justice,” she urged.

During last week’s parliamentary rerun, assailants stormed a polling station at St. Peter’s Methodist Church in Odorkor, overpowered the police, and physically assaulted Madam Koomson.

Disturbing video footage from the scene showed her being pushed to the ground while she attempted to defend herself with pepper spray.

The attack has since sparked widespread condemnation, with calls for heightened security around electoral processes.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the former Fisheries Minister said she is not a violent person and would never endanger lives.

“I have children and brothers. Why would I want to harm someone’s child? I won’t allow anyone to kill, and I certainly won’t do it myself,” she said.

Her comments come in the wake of last Friday’s violent incident at St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station, where the rerun took place across 19 polling stations following disputed results from the December 2024 elections.

According to reports, the violence broke out when unknown individuals overpowered police officers at the polling centre.

Viral videos from the scene captured the moment Hawa Koomson used pepper spray to defend herself as a crowd advanced toward her.

Responding to the incident, she said she was shocked by the attack and had no intention of causing confusion.

“I was surprised. I went there peacefully, but they attacked me. I had to defend myself,” she explained.

Touching on past incidents, Hawa Koomson also addressed claims from the 2020 general elections, where she was accused of firing gunshots in Kasoa.

“In 2020, nobody was killed in my constituency. It was the NDC that attacked me, and I fired a warning shot in self-defence,” she stated.

She also denied any confrontation with the NDC parliamentary candidate during the recent 2024 campaign.

“I never met with the NDC contender during the entire campaign period. I didn’t go near her or her events. So I was surprised to hear that I was being blamed for causing confusion,” she added.

The July 11 rerun was marred by tension and controversy, but Hawa Koomson insists she was targeted unfairly and that her actions were only in response to threats.

“I didn’t go there to fight. I was attacked, and I only tried to protect myself,” she concluded.

Galamsey: A-G’s directive to EOCO may be well-intended, but needless – Franklin Cudjoe https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-a-gs-directive-to-eoco-may-be-well-intended-but-needless-franklin-cudjoe/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 11:41:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555960

The President of policy think tank IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticised the Attorney General and Minister of Justice’s directive to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate alleged illegal mining activities involving two National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives.

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine, in a letter dated Tuesday, July 15, 2025, ordered EOCO to launch a full-scale probe into claims against NDC National Organiser Joseph Yamin and National Vice Chairman Yakubu Abanga. However, Mr. Cudjoe believes the directive was unnecessary, arguing EOCO should act independently and proactively in matters within its remit.

“It may be well-intended, but AG doesn’t need to instruct them. They should have commenced the probe by now. Probably because it is the same party, that is why the AG has stepped in to show some seriousness. I think he means well, but the direction is needless,” he said in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

He further questioned EOCO’s responsiveness to critical national issues like illegal mining.

“Doesn’t EOCO know they are supposed to investigate such issues? EOCO must have its ears and eyes on the ground. It is an entity well-resourced to do certain things by itself and doesn’t need any instructions to act,” Mr. Cudjoe stated.

He criticised the agency for appearing more focused on political arrests instead of environmental crimes. “EOCO should have been busy by now, not just arresting political opponents, but doing other things that are important. The degradation of our environment for mineral resources should have been their first point of call.”

Mr. Cudjoe, however, welcomed the move to expand the scope of EOCO’s investigation to include other individuals named in the Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng report on illegal mining. He further urged a collaborative approach with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to ensure a robust investigation.

“I can understand the call for a further probe into Prof. Boateng’s report. I suggest that OSP must come in, and we should even empower the police to be doing some of these things,” he added.

The directive comes on the heels of allegations by the Concerned Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana (CSSMAG), which claims a taskforce led by Yamin and Abanga, disguised in military gear, has been extorting miners in areas including Sekondi, Bekwai, Offinso, and Prestea.

Both Yamin and Abanga have denied any involvement in illegal mining or connections with the said taskforce.

EOCO has been urged to handle the matter with urgency and diligence, in line with its mandate under the EOCO Act, 2010 (Act 804).

Fuel allowance ban: It’s a good move, but… – Franklin Cudjoe [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/fuel-allowance-ban-its-a-good-move-but-franklin-cudjoe-listen/ Wed, 16 Jul 2025 10:46:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555869 President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has described President John Mahama’s decision to scrap fuel allowances for political appointees as a good initiative, but one that was poorly executed.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Cudjoe said the move, although commendable, appeared rushed and lacked proper planning and communication.

“It’s a good thing, but you don’t take people unaware. It was too haphazard. There was no proper communication, and it looked like it was done in the spur of the moment,” he said.

President Mahama, on Monday, July 15, cancelled the payment and distribution of fuel to all political appointees as part of broader efforts to reduce government spending and promote fiscal discipline.

While supporting the policy in principle, Mr. Cudjoe cautioned that such sudden directives could bring unintended consequences.

“This will bring some financial burden on the appointees. Some may even resort to dubious means to get fuel,” he warned.

He noted that about 70 percent of the motivation behind the announcement may have been to divert attention from the controversial GH₵1 levy recently introduced on petroleum products.

FRANKLIN ON FUEL CANCELATION

“They did this partly to douse the heat from the GH₵1 levy. It’s just a political campaign gimmick. But even if it is populist, it’s not necessarily in a negative way, he claimed.

Mr. Cudjoe, however, expressed concern that there was no strategic plan accompanying the announcement.

“There is no plan for it. In the end, the savings might just end up in the Consolidated Fund without addressing the bigger issue of public sector waste,” he said.

According to him, a more thoughtful approach was needed.

“If they really wanted to reduce waste in the public sector, they should have sat down to analyse the full impact. Government appointees should be allowed some comfort, so there should’ve been some interaction with them to assess the implications,” he advised.

He concluded by saying, “Yes, we may make some savings, but this is not an emergency that demanded this kind of hasty action. That’s not the way to go.”

Unless NEC says otherwise, we’re in the race – NDC’s Kevor on Akwatia by-election [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/unless-nec-says-otherwise-were-in-the-race-ndcs-kevor-on-akwatia-by-election-video/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 17:43:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555742 The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mark Oliver Kevor, has confirmed that the party will contest the upcoming Akwatia by-election following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Kevor said the NDC believes the Akwatia seat rightfully belongs to them based on the outcome of the 2024 general election.

“We will go for the Akwatia by-election because it is a seat we won in 2024, looking at our figures. What has changed in Ghana for us to even consider pulling out?” he questioned.

Mr. Kevor clarified that in previous instances where the NDC chose not to contest by-elections, it was mainly due to unique circumstances surrounding the death of the MP involved.

“In cases where we pulled out, it was mostly because of how the MP died. That was a factor, and we thought it wise to allow the NPP to go unopposed. But in the case of Akwatia, it is too early to talk about not contesting, especially for a seat we believe we already won,” he stressed.

Mr. Kevor, who also serves as the Acting Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NiTA), said the Eastern Regional NDC executives have already taken a firm position on the matter.

“As a region, we have done our checks and in principle, we have decided to contest. Unless the National Executive Committee (NEC) gives a compelling reason backed by solid arguments as to why we shouldn’t, we are moving forward to participate,” he stated.

When asked whether the party would maintain the same candidate from the 2024 election, he said that decision was yet to be made.

“Election dynamics change. That’s a different conversation. For now, the decision is to contest, and we’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” he explained.

The Electoral Commission is expected to announce a date for the by-election in accordance with Ghana’s electoral laws.

Ernest Yaw Kumi, the late MP for Akwatia, passed away on July 7. He was a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and was widely respected in Parliament for his insights and dedication to legislative duties.

Let them continue making noise – Agona West NPP PC fires back after suspension [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/let-them-continue-making-noise-agona-west-npp-pc-fires-back-after-suspension-listen/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 16:41:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555713 The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Agona West, Christopher Arthur, has described his suspension as baseless and politically motivated.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Arthur said he was shocked to hear of his suspension in the media, claiming he was neither informed nor granted a fair hearing.

“I had closed from work and was on my way home when I received calls from some party members that a letter had been issued announcing my suspension. I was surprised because I had not been informed or heard anything about it prior to that,” he said.

According to him, the suspension stems from his open support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“I was told I was suspended because I and some other members campaigned for Dr. Bawumia. But let me be clear—I haven’t breached any party directive, and no one has summoned me or given me a chance to respond,” he stressed.

Mr. Arthur also questioned the authenticity of the suspension letter, which was signed by the constituency chairman, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, and secretary, Anthony Kwame Kum.

“When I saw the letter, I called some executives to verify, and they said they had no idea and were not part of it. Even some regional executives are shocked by the incident,” he noted.

The NPP had earlier suspended Christopher Arthur for allegedly breaching a directive by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, which bars internal campaign activities for party positions.

The suspension was based on claims that Mr. Arthur convened an electoral area meeting on Sunday, July 6, 2025, an action the party described as administrative indiscipline.

But Mr. Arthur insists the move is part of a calculated attempt to destroy him politically.

NPP PC ARTHUR SUSPENDED

“This is just an attempt to bring me down, but they’re only making me more popular. I call it dead on arrival—it won’t hold any water” declared.

He added that the matter had already spread across the constituency but urged his supporters to remain calm.

“Let them continue making noise. Nothing has happened. I’m still standing strong, and our support for Bawumia will continue.”

He reaffirmed his loyalty to the party and Dr. Bawumia, saying, “When the time is right, we will campaign. We will work hard to ensure Dr. Bawumia becomes President.”

Suaman DCE reacts to alleged use of DRIP machines for galamsey [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/suaman-dce-reacts-to-alleged-use-of-drip-machines-for-galamsey-listen/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 12:13:13 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555548 The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Suaman in the Western North Region, Obour Vasco, has denied allegations that equipment under the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) is being used for illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

Describing the claims as a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation, the DCE said the matter has been reported to the police.

“I have seen the video shared on a WhatsApp platform by a research assistant to an MP, but I have reported the matter to the police because he is spreading false information and creating fear and panic,” he stated.

His comments come in response to a viral video purporting that DRIP equipment was being used for galamsey under his supervision.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Vasco dismissed the video as misleading and threatened legal action against the individuals behind the video and media outlets that published the story without verification.

He clarified that the DRIP initiative, introduced under the Akufo-Addo administration, did not include excavators, contrary to claims in the video.

“I don’t have any site, and neither am I involved in galamsey. All the DRIP machines have been parked at the barracks for the past three weeks. It was over a month ago when the immigration commander at Obengkrom requested a bulldozer.

“As the head of DISEC, I work with the security agencies, and that was why I granted the request,” he explained.

Mr. Vasco added that the lowbed transporting the equipment had broken down three weeks ago due to a tyre fault and that inspectors from the Roads Ministry had recently checked the machines, which remain intact.

He emphasized that traditional authorities and the Ghana Immigration Service had also been involved in the legitimate use of the equipment, and at no point had it been diverted for illegal mining.

Akwatia by-election: Brouhaha over posters of Ernest Kumi’s wife settled https://www.adomonline.com/akwatia-by-election-brouhaha-over-posters-of-ernest-kumis-wife-settled/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 10:19:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555414 Former District Chief Executive (DCE) for Denkyembour in the Eastern Region, Seth Birikorang, has dismissed reports suggesting that the wife of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, intends to contest in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries.

This follows the circulation of viral posters featuring the widow, Mavis Kumi, announcing her purported intent to contest in a potential by-election.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Birikorang, a close friend of the family, refuted the reports as false.

He clarified that the widow’s actual name is Mavis Asiamah, not Mavis Kumi as stated on the poster, and described the poster as fake.

According to him, Mavis has no interest in politics, has not expressed any intention to succeed her husband, and has not authorised anyone to promote her as a candidate.

“It was around 2:00 p.m. on Monday when someone drew my attention to the flier, and the family is really disturbed about the development.

“I want to state categorically that she has no plans to succeed her husband. Under no circumstances will she consider that, so I will urge all those driving that campaign to stop. The family is troubled and yet to come to terms with his sudden death, so it is a difficult moment, and we don’t need this,” he stated.

Mr. Birikorang added that the matter had previously been raised with the family, but those involved were strongly advised to abandon the idea.

“The family was very upset and warned them to boycott the decision. So they have come to a decision that she will not contest. I’m aware there are discussions ongoing regarding Ernest’s successor, but Mavis is not part of it,” he noted.

He explained that Mavis now plans to devote her time to managing the businesses she built with her husband and focusing on raising their children.

The late MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness.

We can’t leave Kufuor out of anything – NPP responds to exclusion claims [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/we-cant-leave-kufuor-out-of-anything-npp-responds-to-exclusion-claims-listen/ Tue, 15 Jul 2025 09:25:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555381 Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, says the party has no intention of sidelining former President John Agyekum Kufuor, following the statesman’s recent concerns about neglect and exclusion.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Ahiagbah described Mr. Kufuor as a key pillar of the party whose contributions and guidance are always valued.

“You can’t pass by President Kufuor and not seek his advice. He’s someone whose legacy and wisdom are critical to the growth of our party,” he said.

His comments come in response to a recent video in which former President Kufuor expressed disappointment over what he described as a growing sense of marginalization within the NPP.

Mr. Kufuor lamented that the current leadership had largely kept him out of party decisions despite his long-standing contributions.

But Mr. Ahiagbah dismissed any claims of deliberate exclusion.

“There is no way the NPP will intentionally leave President Kufuor out of anything. If there’s been an oversight, then it’s not deliberate,” he insisted.

AHIAGBHA ON KUFUOR

He added that the party takes Mr. Kufuor’s concerns seriously and has already begun steps to address them.

“It’s a big issue, and the party has taken it seriously. The leadership has formed a committee to look into the matter and engage accordingly,” he revealed.

Mr. Ahiagbah acknowledged that, in the fast pace of political activity, there may have been missteps.

“Sometimes in the rush of things, mistakes happen, some of which we may not even immediately realise. But we love President Kufuor and always want him close to the party. His counsel has shaped many of our decisions,” he stated.

He assured the party’s rank and file and the former President that all efforts will be made to strengthen ties and ensure no one feels left out, especially someone of Kufuor’s stature.

Ablekuma North: If any NDC boy is harmed, we’ll hold you responsible – Gbande warns NPP [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-if-any-ndc-boy-is-harmed-well-hold-you-responsible-gbande-warns-npp-video/ Mon, 14 Jul 2025 16:45:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2555216 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he described as a reckless and dangerous campaign to label NDC members as violent criminals.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Gbande condemned the circulation of posters by alleged NPP operatives branding some NDC members as “wanted dead or alive,” following violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun on Friday, July 11.

“If any of our boys get hurt or attacked because of this reckless propaganda, the NPP will be held responsible. The NPP headquarters is not a police station. If they have evidence, they should take it to the police, not go around issuing threats” he declared.

Mr. Gbande questioned the authenticity of both the posters and the videos being used to implicate members of the NDC.

“The boys whose pictures they are circulating are not even in the video. If they truly want justice, why haven’t they submitted the actual names to the police? This is clearly about creating fear, not accountability.”

He described allegations by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin linking him to the chaos at the St. Peter’s polling station as “blatantly false” and “politically motivated.”

“They keep accusing me of being involved in the violence at Ablekuma North. But when you develop an appetite to come after me, do so with facts—don’t fabricate stories. I had no hand in what happened” Mr. Gbande said.

Violence broke out during the rerun when a group of unidentified macho men stormed the polling station, reportedly assaulting NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie, former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson, and a journalist.

The attack led to the temporary suspension of voting at several centres.

Mr. Gbande warned that if the NPP continues targeting NDC members with false accusations, the party will not sit quietly.

“If they want to use pictures, we also have images of NPP guys who’ve caused mayhem during elections. But we won’t stoop to that level,” he said.

He called on political leaders to reflect on the broader implications of inciting the youth.

“As leaders, we relate with civility at the top—but why do we let our grassroots engage in violence? We need to find a more responsible way to resolve issues and de-escalate tension,” he urged.

Mr. Gbande concluded with a declaration of solidarity, stating:
“The NDC is like the U.S. military—we don’t leave our soldiers behind. We stand by our people, and we will defend them when they are falsely accused.”

Ablekuma North rerun: Videos of some attacks could be AI-generated – Anthony Nukpenu  https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-videos-of-some-attacks-could-be-ai-generated-anthony-nukpenu/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 17:06:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554345 The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Nukpenu, has questioned the authenticity of some viral videos purportedly showing acts of violence during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Nukpenu described some of the incidents as regrettable but raised doubts about the accuracy and origin of certain videos circulating online.

“The attacks must be condemned, but I am happy that there were no gunshots or deaths. It must be on record that the thugs are not from NDC stock. They could be from the NPP because, in politics, when you disappoint people, they can turn against you. But some of these incidents are being exaggerated and could have even been generated through AI,” he stated.

Reacting specifically to the attack on former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, Mr. Nukpenu said he was shocked by the news.

According to him, he met and interacted with Madam Koomson, Akuapem North MP Sammi Awuku, and Political Aide to Dr. Bawumia, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, at the Methodist Church polling station where the attack reportedly occurred.

Expressing his sympathy, Mr. Nukpenu added that the party intends to visit Madam Koomson to commiserate with her and offer an apology.

He also expressed optimism that the police will investigate the incidents thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The Ablekuma North rerun has drawn national attention following months of political wrangling over the results of the 2024 parliamentary election.

The Electoral Commission (EC) ordered a rerun in 19 polling stations after disputes over missing endorsements and irregularities.

I don’t feel sorry one bit for Hawa Koomson – Hannah Bissiw [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/i-dont-feel-sorry-one-bit-for-hawa-koomson-hannah-bissiw-audio/ Fri, 11 Jul 2025 16:22:24 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2554334 National Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Louisa Hannah Bissiw, says she feels no sympathy for former Awutu Senya East MP, Hawa Koomson, who was assaulted during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi News, Dr. Bissiw condemned the violence that disrupted the election at 19 polling stations but made it clear she cannot empathize with the former Fisheries Minister.

“I condemn violence, but please don’t ask me to feel sorry for her because I’ll be lying before you and before God. I don’t feel sorry one bit,” she stated.

Dr. Bissiw alleged that she was once a victim of an attack allegedly orchestrated by Madam Koomson and questioned whether she deserved such treatment.

“Ask her if I deserved the men she brought to come and attack me. Ask her about the people shot and killed at Kasoa and the organiser that died. Did those people deserve it?”

The outspoken NDC executive recalled previous instances of electoral violence and questioned whether Hawa Koomson had shown remorse for her alleged role in them.

“Ask her if the people she attacked deserved it. When I, a parliamentary candidate, was assaulted, did I deserve that? Ask her about the slaps I received when I was pulled out of my moving vehicle and beaten. Honourable Amartey, the former DCE for Teshie, and his wife were beaten in Ayawaso just for trying to rescue me.”

She concluded that if Hawa Koomson believed she deserved those past attacks, “then she deserves better.”

The Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was marred by chaos, arrests, and allegations of impersonation and vote-buying.

Eyewitnesses say a group of men arrived in a pickup and on several motorbikes, storming the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station and triggering panic among voters and officials.

Despite increased security, violence broke out. Hawa Koomson was seen on video being assaulted, and reports suggest she attempted to use pepper spray on the crowd but was overpowered.

I don’t understand why everybody now wants to be in National Security – Mustapha Gbande https://www.adomonline.com/i-dont-understand-why-everybody-now-wants-to-be-in-national-security-mustapha-gbande/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 16:50:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553865 The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, Mustapha Gbande, has expressed concern over what he describes as an unusual surge in public interest in joining the National Security apparatus.

According to him, an increasing number of individuals are now opting to work as National Security operatives despite the relatively low pay, even when better-paying job opportunities are available elsewhere.

“There is no problem anywhere, but when you want to work at SSNIT and the CEO is not ready to recruit people, what will you do? Someone will come to you asking for a security job, and when you offer them one, they will insist on a National Security job,” he said.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Gbande, who also serves as General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), questioned the motivation behind the growing interest.

“I’m embarking on research to understand this, and I’m not done yet, but I believe it is wrong. People may have access to better-paying jobs but still prefer National Security roles,” he stated.

“You can get someone a security job at AngloGold with a salary of GH¢3,000 to GH¢5,000, and they will still demand to work with National Security—even if they’ll be paid only GH¢1,000,” he bemoaned.

Aside from the perceived authority that comes with the role, Mr. Gbande remarked, “It appears some people just need the ID cards to pursue their own agenda. So, it is not about how lucrative the job is.”

]]> Mahama won’t abandon NDC people for NPP – Gbande defends appointments [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-wont-abandon-ndc-for-npp-people-gbande-defends-ndc-appointments-audio/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 15:02:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553787 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has firmly defended President John Mahama’s decision to appoint his own party members into key positions, saying it is both strategic and necessary.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Gbande brushed off criticism that the NDC is engaging in “job for the boys,” insisting that it is entirely justified.

“Why won’t it be job for the boys? Yes, it has to be. President Mahama cannot abandon NDC members and rather work with the NPP people. It’s not possible,” he said.

He pointed out that many appointees are competent and deeply rooted in the party.

Citing specific examples, Mr. Gbande praised National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, for his leadership as the Chief Executive Officer (GoldBoD).

“Sammy Gyamfi was appointed to lead GoldBoD because we know what he can do. He’s gifted. I wasn’t surprised when he turned GoldBoD around. Look at where it is now,” he said.

He also mentioned Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, Acting CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), describing him as a dedicated grassroots party member who has been nurtured by President Mahama.

“Mahama grooms and knows his people. That’s why he gives opportunities to party people—not outsiders. It’s the only way the government can stay connected to the party base,” Mr. Gbande stressed.

Touching on youth development, he said the appointment of George Opare-Addo, the NDC National Youth Organiser, who now also serves as Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment.

“It makes sense that youth initiatives should be led by someone who has managed the party’s youth before. He understands their needs and can truly help them,” he said.

Mustapha Gbande on Job for the boys tag

Mr. Gbande added that for the first time in the party’s history, about 70 to 90 percent of the National Executive Committee members have been appointed into office, reflecting President Mahama’s deep trust in the party’s leadership.

He encouraged NDC supporters who have not yet received appointments to remain patient.

“Don’t lose hope. The fact that you haven’t received a call yet doesn’t mean you’ve been forgotten. Be patient—there’s still more room,” he assured.

He also advised party members seeking jobs not to sit at home and complain but to approach their leaders directly.

“When I go to my office, party people are always there. They are engaging, taking care of others. That’s how it should be. Don’t sit at home and just call—go and ask directly,” he urged.

Mr. Gbande’s remarks come in response to public concerns that the NDC administration is engaging in favoritism by prioritising appointments for loyal party members—a claim he proudly embraces as a form of political loyalty and strategic governance.

Party work must come first – Mustapha Gbande clarifies overlapping roles debate [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/party-work-must-come-first-mustapha-gbande-clarifies-overlapping-roles-debate-audio/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 13:04:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553761 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has shed light on the ongoing internal discussions regarding whether party executives now serving in government should relinquish their positions.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Gbande confirmed that a committee has been tasked to examine the issue, and its findings will soon be made public.

“There is a committee working on it, and the findings will come out soon. We are weighing the options carefully to strengthen the party and ensure effective governance,” he said.

His comments come in the wake of reports that the NDC is preparing to issue a directive requiring all government appointees who also hold party positions to resign from their party roles.

The proposed move, reportedly backed by the Political Committee, Functional Executive Committee, and Council of Elders, is aimed at reinforcing party structures and restoring accountability.

But Gbande cautioned that the matter should not be viewed as a power struggle or a rejection by the President.

“It is not that President Mahama doesn’t want people to hold party positions. In fact, he wants those in government to remain loyal and accountable to the party base,” Gbande explained.

He added that because President Mahama is often occupied with national duties, it is important to have party-aligned individuals in government who can “check and balance” decisions and remain in touch with the grassroots.

“Where the President is, he can be busy all day and not know what is happening at the grassroots. That is why party executives in government are important—to keep the connection between government and the people,” he said.

Mr. Gbande stressed that anyone appointed by the President but who fails to serve the people or pushes personal agendas over party priorities will be held accountable.

Mustapha appointment

“If you are an appointee and your personal agenda becomes more important than the party’s goals, then you are not serving the President. And we won’t sit back and allow anyone to undermine what the party has fought for,” he warned.

He revealed that about 70% of government appointees under the Mahama administration are people with deep roots in the party, mentioning names like Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Kofi Boah, and Kwame Agboga.

“These are not technocrats brought in from outside. They are grassroots people, and that shows the President’s commitment to building a party-government bridge,” he said.

Despite serving in the Presidency, Mr. Gbande stressed his personal loyalty to the party above all.

“Given the chance, I will still choose party work. I’m not a statesman. I’m a political person, and my commitment is to the party,” he said.

He concluded by urging appointees to act in ways that reflect the values and intentions of President Mahama.

“When the President is not around, you as an appointee must act as he would. If you don’t, then you’re creating problems for the party—and we will not allow that.”

Mustapha Gbande ‘exposes’ NPP over Ablekuma North rerun [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/mustapha-gbande-exposes-npp-over-ablekuma-north-rerun-listen/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 12:11:56 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553696

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has urged Ghanaians to disregard the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) claims of boycotting the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Gbande accused the NPP of being dishonest, alleging that party operatives are actively campaigning at night in the constituency despite public pronouncements of a boycott.

“The NPP is part of the election but is lying to Ghanaians about boycotting. They are disingenuous and go to campaign at night,” he asserted.

Mr. Gbande challenged the NPP to officially communicate its decision to withdraw from the election to the Electoral Commission (EC).

“The NPP should be bold enough to write to the Electoral Commission and officially inform them that they are withdrawing, so their candidate’s name can be taken off the ballot paper,” he stated.

He suggested the boycott claims stem from internal party assessments that project an imminent defeat in what was once an NPP stronghold.

“After an assessment, they have realised their candidate will lose and wish to change her but can’t. They know she did nothing as an ambassador, and even as a former MP, she has no track record. That’s why she lost the primaries in 2020.”

“Ablekuma North was one of the constituencies the NDC won, but the NPP wanted to use police intimidation to snatch it from us. That won’t work,” Mr. Gbande declared.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled a rerun in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency after disruptions during the December 2024 parliamentary elections prevented full collation of results.

The NPP has described the rerun as illegal and in contempt of court and declared it would not take part.

However, an injunction application filed at the Accra High Court to halt the EC’s decision was dismissed on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. The party is yet to publicly rescind its boycott stance.

National Cathedral scandal: Akufo-Addo should be standing trial – Mustapha Gbande https://www.adomonline.com/national-cathedral-scandal-akufo-addo-should-be-standing-trial-mustapha-gbande/ Thu, 10 Jul 2025 11:47:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553660 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has taken a swipe at former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, calling for him to be held accountable over the National Cathedral project.

According to Gbande, Akufo-Addo should be prosecuted for what he described as a fraudulent and scandalous implementation of the cathedral, which has consumed millions of dollars in public funds without yielding any results.

“Right now, what do we do with the pit? Nana Addo should be standing trial for that. His dream to build a cathedral was implemented in a fictitious and fraudulent way,” Mr. Gbande stated on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

He insisted that the NDC never opposed the idea of a cathedral but rather the questionable handling and lack of transparency surrounding its execution.

“The NDC never bastardised the National Cathedral. Former President Akufo-Addo mentioned God, but when they started the implementation, you didn’t need anybody to tell you it was a scandal. They spent $57 million, and all they left was a pit. Do you think in good conscience that it is not a scandal? So that was what we criticised,” he said.

Mr. Gbande also questioned the location of the project, expressing regret over the demolition of key state buildings in Accra’s central business district to make way for the facility.

“We also had issues with the siting of the cathedral. They demolished a lot of big and important buildings to make way for the cathedral in the central heart of the city when they could have taken it to Akuapem, Ada, or any other part of the country to drive development,” he added.

The National Cathedral project was launched in 2017 and was expected to be commissioned on March 6, 2024, during the second term of former President Akufo-Addo. It was billed as a monumental Christian worship centre and a national symbol of Ghana’s religious heritage, with plans to include a large sanctuary, museum, and facilities for conferences and religious events.

However, the project has been dogged by controversy over its financing, particularly amid Ghana’s economic challenges. Critics have argued that the over $58 million already spent could have been better used to address critical needs in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

In May 2025, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia acknowledged that the uncompleted National Cathedral project significantly undermined public trust and became a major source of voter discontent.

Meanwhile, the NDC under former President John Mahama has proposed converting the stalled project into a National Cultural Convention Centre. Despite this, the National Cathedral Secretariat insists the original vision remains intact and is still being pursued.

Gov’t finally breaks silence on foreign queer couple’s ‘desecration’ of Independence Square https://www.adomonline.com/govt-finally-breaks-silence-on-foreign-queer-couples-desecration-of-independence-square/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 17:14:32 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553421 The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has addressed recent controversy over viral images showing a foreign queer couple at key national monuments in Ghana.

According to the Abura Asebu Kwamankese MP, the public display captured in the images is inconsistent with Ghana’s cultural and moral values and must be unequivocally condemned.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Ofosu affirmed that calls for immediate action were not misplaced, though he clarified that the couple had already exited the country by the time the images surfaced online.

“That kind of display of unnatural sexual acts violates our laws. I must admit that the government cannot monitor everything that happens, but this incident does not have the support of the government. It is a desecration of our national monuments, and we will not allow it to happen again,” he stated.

When asked about the possibility of extraditing the couple to face legal action in Ghana, Mr. Ofosu responded, “We may consider that option, but we must think through it carefully and assess whether it is worth it.”

The couple, identified as Lue and Rue from South Africa, were seen holding hands, kissing, and draped in the Ghana flag at the Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum — images that quickly went viral on social media.

The visuals sparked widespread public outrage, with many Ghanaians questioning the government’s silence on what they considered a desecration of revered national symbols.

According to the couple, the photos formed part of the #ShowGhanaLove campaign — described as an act of solidarity with Ghana’s LGBTQ+ community.

In response to the incident, Old Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah submitted a petition urging President John Mahama to publicly condemn the act and reaffirm his administration’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s traditional values.

Minister Kwakye Ofosu reiterated that the Mahama-led administration does not support LGBTQ+ activities and remains committed to the passage of legislation that criminalises such acts.

Anti-LGBTQ+ bill: How does NPP expect us to do in 6 months what they couldn’t in 8 years? – Kwakye Ofosu https://www.adomonline.com/anti-lgbtq-bill-how-does-npp-expect-us-to-do-in-6-months-what-they-couldnt-in-8-years-kwakye-ofosu/ Wed, 09 Jul 2025 16:47:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2553397 Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has hit back at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its recent criticisms of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
Responding to claims that President John Mahama is delaying action on the bill, the Abura Asebu Kwamankese MP argued that the NPP lacks the moral right to criticise.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Ofosu stated that the NPP, under former President Akufo-Addo, had eight years to pass the bill but failed to act.

“Yet, they remained hesitant, even when Akufo-Addo had the opportunity to sign it before leaving office. How do you expect us to do in six months what you failed to deliver in eight years?” he questioned.

He emphasised that both the NDC and President Mahama have consistently demonstrated their support for the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

“Between us and them, we know who is genuinely committed to the bill. We all saw the shenanigans they pulled in court just to delay the process so Akufo-Addo would not sign the bill. These things will not sidetrack us. We are committed to ensuring that the bill is passed — not to promoting LGBTQ activities in Ghana,” he asserted.

Mr Ofosu also rejected suggestions that the NDC MPs who sponsored the bill have gone silent following their party’s electoral victory.

The debate over the controversial bill has reignited following Ghana’s abstention from a United Nations Human Rights Council vote during its 59th session.

The vote sought to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. At the end of the vote, 29 member states voted in favour, 15 opposed, while Ghana was one of three countries that abstained.

Amid public backlash, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration clarified that Ghana’s abstention was guided by the principles enshrined in Chapter 5, Article 17 of the 1992 Constitution, which prohibits discrimination based on gender, race, colour, ethnicity, religion, creed, or social and economic status.

The Ministry also dismissed suggestions that Ghana has compromised its stance on homosexuality.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Moses Foh Amoaning stated that the decision was wrong, considering the nation’s long-standing position on LGBTQ+ matters.

According to him, Ghanaians were disappointed in the Akufo-Addo government’s refusal to sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill despite initial promises — and they do not expect President Mahama to repeat those mistakes.

“Former President Akufo-Addo ignored the bill, and it contributed to the NPP’s massive loss in the 2024 election. It was a rejection of the NPP’s position, and the NDC can attest to that. The bill has elapsed, and President Mahama expects that the Attorney General will present it to him, but it is delaying,” he said.

The renowned lawyer further expressed disappointment over the President’s silence on the matter during the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving held on July 1, 2025.

“There is no better Thanksgiving and Prayer than this matter, which God is very much interested in, but the President said nothing about it,” he lamented.

The United Nations Human Rights Council vote, held on Monday, July 7, 2025, during the council’s 59th session, sought to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In the end, 29 member states voted in favour, 15 against, while Ghana was among three countries that abstained.

The renewed mandate reinforces a global call for governments to respect, protect, and fulfill their obligations under international human rights law for people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

Ghana’s abstention comes amid renewed domestic efforts to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities. In May 2025, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announced plans to reintroduce the controversial anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

However, Mr. Amoaning asserted that the outcome of the vote has dire consequences for all United Nations member countries and stressed the need for Ghanaian authorities to take decisive action.

Despite his strong reservations about the abstention, Mr. Amoaning acknowledged that the Minister for Foreign Affairs usually issues directives on such decisions. He therefore called for clarification on Ghana’s official position.

“Sometimes the Ghanaian representatives on their own make certain decisions, so we must find out from the government what really the position of Ghana was,” he added.

Ablekuma North rerun: EC has a lot of questions to answer – Justin Kodua [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ablekuma-north-rerun-ec-has-a-lot-of-questions-to-answer-justin-kodua-video/ Tue, 08 Jul 2025 16:47:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552899 General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has strongly criticised the Electoral Commission (EC) over its decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosi Sen show, Mr. Kodua described the EC’s move as inconsistent and lacking credibility.

“The EC has a lot of questions to answer. Their U-turn doesn’t add up. What we were told earlier is that only three polling stations were outstanding after collation, and now they are saying 19. This is clearly an afterthought,” he said.

Mr Kodua questioned the basis of the Commission’s sudden change in position.

He explained that EC officials had informed all political parties during the collation process that only three polling stations had issues, and pink sheets had already been distributed to party agents.

“We know for a fact that some of the polling stations included in the 19 were not part of the ones initially said to be outstanding,” he alleged.

He warned that such abrupt decisions and perceived inconsistencies from the EC could have dangerous implications.

“If we allow this, it could encourage political actors to resort to violence and disruptions during elections just to get a rerun,” he cautioned.

The Electoral Commission, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, announced that the rerun would take place on Friday, July 11, following months of disagreement between the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the results of the 2024 parliamentary elections in Ablekuma North.

The seat is being hotly contested between Nana Akua Afriyie of the NPP and Ewurabena Aubynn of the NDC.

In the meantime, the NPP has secured an interlocutory injunction from the Accra High Court to halt the EC’s planned rerun, arguing that the commission is acting in breach of an earlier court directive.

Death has been unfair to us – NPP Chairman on sudden demise of Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi https://www.adomonline.com/death-has-been-unfair-to-us-npp-chairman-on-sudden-demise-of-akwatia-mp-ernest-kumi/ Tue, 08 Jul 2025 11:32:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552717 The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, Yaw Addo, has recounted his final interactions with the late Member of Parliament (MP), Ernest Yaw Kumi, describing his passing as a painful blow to the party and the entire constituency.

According to Mr. Addo, the MP was actively engaged in plans for a thank-you tour across the constituency following the recent conclusion of a Supreme Court case that challenged his election.

“We were preparing to officially thank the people, the chiefs, and elders of Akwatia. Because of the court issue, we had delayed the thank-you tour. Now that the Supreme Court had ruled in his favour, we had finally begun planning.”

He said over the past weekend, which coincided with the traditional Akwasidae festival, there were a number of programmes lined up and he had spoken to the MP to confirm his participation.

“I called him to find out if he could make it to Akwatia because he had travelled to Takoradi,” Mr. Addo said. “He told me he was tied up and wouldn’t be able to attend.”

Later on Sunday evening, Mr. Addo received a message from Mr. Kumi confirming that he had arrived home safely.

“That was our last conversation. I never imagined it would be the last time I would hear from him,” he said, holding back tears.

The news of Mr. Kumi’s sudden passing on Monday, July 7, came as a complete shock.

Mr. Addo, in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, said he received several calls while at the constituency office but initially ignored them, thinking it was routine.

However, when the calls persisted, he decided to follow up.

“I tried calling his phone, but there was no answer. I called his wife too, but she didn’t pick up either. Eventually, I reached out to our former DCE who broke the news. He said Ernest had complained of chest pains early Monday morning, and not long after, he was gone.”

Upon hearing the tragic news, party executives rushed to the Lashibi Funeral Home, where they confirmed the MP’s death.

“We saw his lifeless body on the floor. It was heartbreaking,” he said.

Mr. Addo described Ernest Kumi as a humble, determined, and peace-loving individual.

“He wasn’t just my MP; he was like a younger brother. We’re from the same town. He was cool, respectful, and very committed to his work. People saw him as soft, but he was tough and focused.”

According to him, the party in Akwatia was built around Ernest Kumi’s leadership and vision.

“He wasn’t wealthy, but he supported many people in the constituency. He had suffered before becoming an MP, and it’s painful that just few months into his first term, death has snatched him away.”

“He was a go-getter. Not violent, not envious, always ready to help. We are shattered. Death has been unfair to us. But we can’t question God. As leaders, we have to encourage ourselves and keep moving.”

Mr. Kumi passed away at the age of 40 after a brief illness. He is survived by a wife and three children.

In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, relatives from his hometown of Wenchi in the Eastern Region described his death as a major blow—not just to them, but to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the entire nation.

His younger brother, Edmond Kumi, revealed that their mother collapsed upon hearing the news and had to be rushed to the hospital.

“It was too much for her. She couldn’t handle the shock,” he said tearfully.

The MP’s uncle, Edward Ntiamoah, described him as a man full of love, compassion, and dedication to the wellbeing of others.

“He was a pillar of support to the entire family and touched many lives. We’ll always remember him for his warmth and selflessness,” Mr. Ntiamoah said.

Despite their sorrow, the family says they take comfort in the positive impact he made during his lifetime.

Plans for his funeral are currently on hold, as the family awaits the return of his wife and other relatives from Accra before finalising arrangements.

On Tuesday morning, their family home in Wenchi was filled with mourners. The air was heavy with grief as cries and wails echoed through the compound.

Mr. Ernest Yaw Kumi died on Monday, July 7, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 40 years old.

I’m devastated – NDC’s Eric Adjei weeps over death of Ernest Kumi [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/im-devastated-ndcs-eric-adjei-weeps-over-death-of-ernest-kumi-video/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 19:50:50 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552382 The Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, (NEIP) Eric Adjei and personal friend of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, Eric Adjei, has expressed deep sorrow following news of the legislator’s sudden death.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Adjei revealed how he was informed of the tragic development and recounted his last moments with his friend.

“I’m devastated and hugely troubled because Ernest was not just a colleague politician, he was a personal friend. Life is indeed a journey, and I will learn a lot out of this,” he said emotionally.

According to him, he was in a meeting when Ernest’s wife called to inform him that the MP had been rushed to the hospital.

“I was at the office in a meeting when his wife called to say he was not feeling well and had been taken to the hospital. I was shocked because I had just spoken to him the day before,” Mr. Adjei narrated.

He revealed that Ernest had attended a funeral in the Western Region over the weekend and had told him he was back in Accra safely.

“When I got to the hospital, his wife hugged me and burst into tears, saying, ‘Your friend is lying down lifeless.’ I was heartbroken. I sat there with her, and looking at him, you wouldn’t even believe he was gone.”

Mr. Adjei, who was clearly struggling to come to terms with the loss, said Ernest was preparing for his moot exercise at the Ghana School of Law scheduled for Friday, July 11.

“He told me about it just yesterday. He was so full of life, so ready. This is a big blow.”

Despite being on opposite sides of the political divide, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communicator stressed the strong bond he shared with the late MP.

“This is beyond politics. We were close friends even before we came to power. And it shows, because once the news broke, people from both the NDC and NPP rushed to the hospital. His human relationship was unmatched.”

He added that he is currently at the Lashibi Funeral Home, where the MP’s body has been taken.

“To his wife and three children, I say God strengthen you. May God preserve his soul. This is a big loss—not just to the NPP or Parliament, but to Ghana.”

The unexpected demise of Ernest Yaw Kumi has shocked Parliament and Ghanaians at large.

A first-time lawmaker with a bright future in law and politics, his passing has left many in disbelief and mourning.

It hit us very hard – Nana B mourns death of Ernest Kumi [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/it-hit-us-very-hard-nana-b-mourns-death-of-ernest-kumi-video/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 16:20:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552365 National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden death of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, describing it as a major blow to the party and Parliament.

Speaking in an emotional interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Nana B said the news was difficult to accept.

“Sometimes, it’s even hard to believe what the Bible says — that we should give thanks to God for everything,” he said. “How do you thank God for something like this? It’s painful. But the Bible says we must give thanks, so we do, even when it’s hard,” he mourned.

Nana B recounted how he received the news during a National Executive Committee meeting at the party’s headquarters on Monday morning.

“We were discussing matters about Ablekuma North when our Director of Administration and Finance showed me the news on the internet. I was shocked and heartbroken,” he said.

According to him, the atmosphere in the meeting changed completely.

“I later saw the Regional Chairman returning to the meeting in tears. We had to pause everything. Executives like our General Secretary, Minority Leader, and other senior members were all visibly crying. That tells you how deeply this has affected the party,” he added.

Nana B praised the late MP for his dedication and intellect, noting that Ernest Kumi was one of the party’s most promising young politicians.

“He was a very brilliant and intelligent young man — deep in his submissions and hardworking. He had just overcome a legal battle regarding his seat and was ready to make his mark in Parliament. Unfortunately, that opportunity has been taken from him,” he lamented.

“This is a big blow to the NPP and Parliament. We’ve lost a rising star.”

The details surrounding Mr. Kumi’s death remain unclear, but reports indicate he died after a short illness.

Tributes have since been pouring in from both sides of the House and across the political spectrum.

Speaking in an emotional interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Boamah said he is struggling to come to terms with the news, as the late MP showed no signs of illness during the time they spent together over the weekend.

“I still can’t believe the news about his demise because I have been with him since Friday until around 11 am Sunday when he left for Akwatia. He wasn’t sick,” he recalled.

Mr. Boamah said they had both attended the Miss TTU event on Saturday along with other New Patriotic Party (NPP) members including Hon. Asafo Agyei, Rudolf Amoako Gyampah, and Kobby Okyere Darko.

“We all ate, laughed, and engaged with some party members. So I don’t think what I’m hearing is true. Someone should tell me it’s not the truth,” he mourned.

According to him, Mr. Kumi informed him upon arriving home and had even prepared for his moot exercise at the Ghana School of Law, scheduled for Monday, July 7, 2025 — the same day he was reported dead.

“I was waiting for his call so we could go to Parliament together, only to hear that he had passed away,” he added.

The unexpected demise of Ernest Yaw Kumi has sent shockwaves across Parliament and the country. He was a first-time MP whose legal and political careers were both just beginning to blossom.

Janet Nabla threatens to sue gov’t over National Cultural Convention Centre project https://www.adomonline.com/janet-nabla-threatens-to-sue-govt-over-national-cultural-convention-centre-project/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 12:15:45 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552258 The Chairperson of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, has threatened to sue the Mahama-led government over plans to convert the stalled National Cathedral project into a National Cultural Convention Centre (NCCC).

According to Madam Nabla, she and many others donated towards the construction of a National Cathedral—not a Cultural Convention Centre—and the government’s move amounts to a betrayal of public trust.

The decision to reconfigure the project was outlined in a new policy document under the 24-hour economy initiative for culture, creative arts, and tourism, dubbed SH0W24.

The proposed NCCC is expected to be established in partnership with the AfCFTA Secretariat and serve as Africa’s premier venue for international exhibitions, film festivals, trade shows, and summits.

The government argues that the shift addresses a critical infrastructure gap while respecting religious and national values.

However, speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Nabla strongly criticised the move and insisted that the original purpose—a National Cathedral—remains valid.

While it remains unclear whether she is a member of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, she vowed to ensure the church is reimbursed for its financial contributions.

“President Mahama told us it was not right for state resources to be used for a cathedral. So I am going to sue the government to ensure that the Presby Church gets our money back,” she said.

“I never contributed a pesewa towards a cultural convention centre; it was a cathedral. So it will be a mismanagement of funds if the cathedral is not built. They would have to pay us our money before embarking on the Cultural Convention Centre project.”

She further urged the government to consider launching a new national fundraising campaign if it wants to pursue the NCCC initiative.

TEWU-TUC slams TEWU-GH’s strike as unlawful [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/tewu-tuc-slams-tewu-ghs-strike-as-unlawful-listen/ Mon, 07 Jul 2025 08:38:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2552024 The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union under the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) has criticised the breakaway group, TEWU-GH, over its strike action amid an ongoing representation dispute.

The strike, which took effect on July 3 following a seven-day ultimatum that expired on June 24, 2025, centres on TEWU-GH’s demand for representation on the governing councils of traditional public universities.

However, TEWU-TUC insists the action is not only unjustified but also a clear violation of existing labour laws and union protocols.

TEWU-GH has argued that its majority membership gives it the rightful claim to such representation.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the General Secretary of TEWU-TUC, King James Azortibah, maintained that TEWU-GH’s strike lacks any legal foundation.

“They know they are wasting their time and there is no legal backing. How can you strike just because you don’t have council representation? Is it part of the conditions of service? Is it part of collective bargaining? It is not,” he stated.

He added that meetings on the issue have been ongoing since TEWU-GH broke away from the mother union last year.

“From 2020 to 2024, TEWU did not sit in council because of such internal issues. TEWU-TUC has been in existence since 1962, and someone cannot just wake up one day to claim representation simply because they are a tertiary union,” he said.

Mr. Azortibah reaffirmed TEWU-TUC’s position as the only legally mandated union to represent educational workers in public universities, citing a letter from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) dated August 2, 2023.

He further accused TEWU-GH of creating confusion and attempting to usurp legal authority without the necessary recognition or credentials.

“They used intimidation to hijack TEWU-TUC members, but they know it won’t take them anywhere. They don’t have any conditions of service and rely on TEWU-TUC for negotiations, which are currently due with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. I have invited them, but I know this group will not even start because internal fights have begun,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr. Azortibah has urged TEWU-TUC members across the country to remain calm and not be swayed by what he described as “diversionary antics” from the breakaway faction.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, he said, “The annual delegates conference should not be a funfair for presidential hopefuls. All presidential hopefuls must be banned from erecting banners or campaigning at the venue.”

He said there is a need for sober minds and focused discussions at the conference, adding, “We need quietness and a real commitment to administering constitutional changes. The party should issue a strong warning to anyone planning to use the conference as a platform for campaigning.”

Regarding the scheduled date of July 19, 2025, at the Legon Sports Stadium, Mr. Boateng suggested the party should consider postponing it because of the ongoing Ablekuma North election rerun.

He stressed that “One member, one vote is the way forward to help the party move ahead,” and added, “There must be discipline and members must be in good standing.”

Mr. Boateng also encouraged inclusivity, saying, “It would be odd to rush this process. This will enable members to vote for the flagbearer with an open mind.”

The NPP recently announced a nine-member committee to oversee preparations for the National Delegates Conference, as confirmed by NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua after the NEC meeting on June 17.

The conference aims to bring delegates from across the country together to discuss key party issues and decide the party’s future direction.

Don’t launch policies and hide documents – Oppong Nkrumah to government [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/dont-launch-policies-and-hide-documents-oppong-nkrumah-to-government-listen/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 13:01:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551204 Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on the NDC government to submit all newly launched policies, including the 24-hour economy initiative, to Parliament for scrutiny, monitoring, and evaluation.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, the former Information Minister expressed worry over what he described as a growing trend of the government launching major programmes without presenting the necessary documentation to Parliament.

“This is not the first time the NDC has launched a policy and failed to provide the details to Parliament. We saw it with the One Million Coders programme—they’ve launched it, but no document has been brought to us,” he stated.

The Ranking Member for the Economy and Development Committee also referenced President Mahama’s recent announcement during his tour of the Bono Region that over 2,000 Ghanaians had been selected to travel abroad for work.

“He said they’ve signed a contract to help more than 2,000 Ghanaians travel and work abroad. That’s fine. But where is the document? Parliament hasn’t seen anything to understand the processes involved,” he said.

He said while such initiatives may appear promising, Parliament must be allowed to perform its oversight role.

“You can’t keep launching programmes and avoid accountability. After every launch, bring the document to Parliament. Let’s evaluate it, ask questions, and monitor progress. That’s how governance works,” he added.

Touching specifically on the 24-hour economy policy, which has now been officially launched, Mr. Nkrumah warned that failure to submit the full policy framework to Parliament could lead to doubts about the government’s transparency.

“This 24-hour economy is very important. But without bringing the full document for monitoring, how can we hold them accountable? They want to avoid scrutiny, and that’s not right,” he said.

OPPONG NKRUMAH ON LAUNCHED POLICIES

He claimed the NDC has so far launched about six key policies since assuming office, but only one has been submitted to Parliament for review.

“They passed the E-Levy at night—no public engagement. They launched the Adwumawura programme and still haven’t brought even a single page explaining what it entails. The National Apprenticeship Programme, the AGRAC Economic Transformation Agenda—same story. Where are the documents?” he queried.

Meanwhile, the newly launched 24-hour economy policy spans 283 pages and provides detailed plans for implementation and funding. It also signals a shift in focus—from merely keeping businesses open around the clock to addressing broader structural challenges in Ghana’s economy.

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah concluded by urging the government not to repeat past mistakes.

“We’re not saying don’t implement your programmes. Just do the right thing and bring them to Parliament. Let’s all work together in the interest of accountability and transparency,” he stressed.

We didn’t expect a re-run but… – Ablekuma North NDC PC [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/we-didnt-expect-a-re-run-but-ablekuma-north-ndc-pc-audio/ Thu, 03 Jul 2025 10:59:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2551009 The Ablekuma North parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ewurabena Aubynn, has welcomed the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Madam Aubynn acknowledged that while a rerun was not the outcome she had hoped for, she believes it is necessary for peace and fairness.

“This isn’t our heart’s desire, but it’s only fair for them to do this. I believe it is God’s way of preventing chaos in Ablekuma North and Ghana at large. The party leadership has engaged us and urged us to cooperate with the process, so we accept it,” she said.

In a press release dated July 2, 2025, the EC announced that the rerun will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

The upcoming rerun has become a high-stakes contest, as both the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) intensify efforts to secure the crucial parliamentary seat in the Greater Accra Region.

However, the NPP and its candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, have strongly opposed the move, insisting that she won the election held on December 7, 2024, and vowing to resist any attempt to “subvert the will of the people.”

Responding to this, Ewurabena Aubynn accused her opponent of entitlement and refusal to accept defeat.

“She thought the general election would be a walk in the park just because she won the NPP primaries after distributing goodies,” she claimed.

“She’s a former MP, and people can attest to her manipulative games, aggression, and underhand tactics during elections. For them, it’s not about hard work or campaigning, it’s about buying fridges and sharing money,” Ewurabena alleged.

“But this time, the majority of voters in Ablekuma North voted for change, for development, and they voted massively for Ewurabena Aubynn.”

The EC’s decision to hold a rerun follows the NDC’s concerns over the use of scanned Pink Sheets by the NPP as part of the results.

According to the EC, the scanned Pink Sheets from 19 polling stations lacked proper verification from Presiding Officers, even though party agents had signed off on them.

The Commission has assured the public of a peaceful and transparent process, with the Ghana Police Service providing security.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Oppong Nkrumah claimed the EC’s decision points to political interference, accusing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of manipulation.

“I’m surprised. Weeks ago, the EC assured Parliament there was no need for a rerun and only requested security for collation. We even petitioned the police to assist. Now, within two weeks, they’re calling for a rerun. It’s glaring that there is some form of manipulation,” he said.

OPPONG NKRUMAH ON ABLEKUMA NORTH

He further questioned the conduct of the police under the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), whom he alleged was appointed under NDC influence.

“How can the new IGP, appointed by the NDC, provide security for the re-run but couldn’t do so for the collation process? This raises more questions than answers,” he added.

The Electoral Commission has scheduled the rerun for July 11, 2025, following prolonged disputes over the December 7, 2024, parliamentary results between NPP’s Nana Akua Afriyie and NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn.

UPSA is not just concerned about students’ academics – Prof. Boadi laments rising indecency [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/upsa-is-not-just-concerned-about-students-academics-prof-boadi-laments-rising-indecency-audio/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 20:35:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550781 Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Associate Professor Isaac Boadi, has clarified the controversy surrounding the recent barring of some students from lecture halls due to indecent dressing.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Prof. Boadi described the exercise as a necessary and corrective measure aimed at upholding professionalism within the institution.

“It was an instructional and correctional exercise. We have been advising them regarding dress code, but it seems some didn’t take it seriously, so we needed to act,” he said.

Prof. Boadi expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of inappropriate dressing among students. He stressed that UPSA is not only focused on academic excellence but also on grooming students for society.

“As lecturers, who are also parents, we are not just here to teach, but to train them to become well-mannered individuals. People come with unkempt hair, wear slippers, and dress indecently, but we do not want them to carry that into the job market, as it will reflect poorly on UPSA,” he stated.

Some students were reportedly asked to leave lecture halls and return to their hostels or homes to change into clothing deemed more appropriate, an action that sparked confusion and complaints.

Some students, particularly those in Level 100, claimed the enforcement was inconsistent and appeared to target them specifically.

However, Prof. Boadi clarified that Level 200 to 400 students have already completed their exams, leaving only first-year students currently in session.

He emphasised that the exercise was not intended to violate students’ rights. “We respect human rights, but we also expect students to dress decently. Many of them live in hostels without parental guidance, so the university has to step in to instill discipline.”

Prof. Boadi added that had the university chosen to fully enforce its dress code policy, some students could have faced suspensions of two to three weeks under existing rules.

Virologist urges Ghanaians to embrace COVID-19 vaccines amidst resurgence https://www.adomonline.com/virologist-urges-ghanaians-to-embrace-covid-19-vaccines-amidst-resurgence/ Wed, 02 Jul 2025 09:48:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550473 The Head of Virology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Professor Kofi Bonney, has called on Ghanaians to commit to taking COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots as new infections are being recorded across the country.

He explained that while the original vaccines were not designed to eliminate the virus entirely, they remain effective in preventing severe illness—making booster doses crucial in maintaining immunity.

“The vaccines boost immunity, but the efficacy reduces at a point. So people who have already taken the vaccines must do well to get the boosters to build the immune system,” he said.

“Ghana Health Service is working to secure the vaccines, and we must all try and take it when it comes.”

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Prof. Bonney confirmed that the currently circulating strain is a slightly different subvariant of the Omicron variant, which is being closely monitored but is not considered severe.

Virologist urges Ghanaians to embrace COVID-19 vaccines amidst resurgence

“In 2022, when the cases started reducing, we were fighting the Omicron, and that is what has resurged. So this is not anything new,” he noted.

While acknowledging the strain’s general mildness in immune-competent individuals, Prof. Bonney warned that vulnerable populations remain at risk and should take extra precautions.

He also urged Ghanaians to recommit to public health practices, especially during the rainy season, which often sees an increase in influenza-like and respiratory illnesses.

“Surges in respiratory illnesses are common during the rainy period,” he said, encouraging the public to return to the familiar and effective preventive measures such as handwashing, mask-wearing in crowded places, and staying home when unwell.

NPP must be strategic in choosing 2028 flagbearer – Pius Hadzide [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-must-be-strategic-in-choosing-2028-flagbearer-pius-hadzide-video/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 16:59:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550284 Spokesperson for Bryan Acheampong’s 2028 campaign, Pius Enam Hadzide, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be politically smart and strategic in selecting its next presidential candidate.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Hadzide warned that if the party chooses a candidate without careful consideration, past controversies associated with that person could be used as a reference point to undermine the campaign.

“If we’re not careful and select just anyone, every time an old issue comes up, they’ll link it to our candidate. That can cost us dearly,” he said.

According to him, the decision to change a candidate should not be taken lightly, but must be aimed at helping the NPP win power in the 2028 elections.

“This is not about change for change’s sake. It’s about change that gives us a real shot at winning power in 2028 — for the sake of everyone in the party,” he added.

Mr. Hadzide stressed the need for deep thinking and unity in choosing a candidate, stressing that the party must select someone who appeals broadly to members across all levels.

“That’s why I believe Bryan Acheampong is the best option. He’s young, relatable, and well-liked by everyone in the party. I don’t think there’s anyone in the party who can say they have a problem with Bryan. He’s helped a lot of people — financially and otherwise.”

He described Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, as a “great unifying force” with no bad blood or divisions linked to his name.

“If there must be a change, then it must be Bryan. He represents boldness, unity, and forward-thinking. We need a leader who can take a decision and stand by it — Bryan is that kind of person,” Mr. Hadzide stressed.

“Where we are now, we need a man to lead us — and Bryan Acheampong is our best bet,” he concluded.

Mr. Acheampong has already declared his intention to contest the NPP’s flagbearer race ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He made the announcement during a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, where he sought their prayers and blessings.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party has scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026, following a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

NPP must be strategic in choosing 2028 Flagbearer – Pius Hadzide nonadult
Ghanaians always prosper under NPP governments – Pius Hadzide [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/ghanaians-always-prosper-under-npp-governments-pius-hadzide-video/ Tue, 01 Jul 2025 16:54:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2550263 Spokesperson for Team Bryan Acheampong’s 2028 campaign, Pius Enam Hadzide, says history has shown that Ghanaians always enjoy better living conditions under New Patriotic Party (NPP) administrations.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr. Hadzide expressed concern about the party’s current standing, saying it was not where they hoped to be.

However, he remained confident that the NPP had always been the better choice for Ghanaians.

“Ask anyone — even our opponents will admit it — Ghanaians prosper more under NPP governments,” he stated.

He stressed several key policies and interventions introduced under various NPP administrations to support his claim.

These include the introduction of free basic education from primary to junior high school under former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and the school feeding programme which continues to support thousands of school children across the country.

“Who introduced school feeding? It was the NPP. Who made it possible for your child to go to school without paying a dime from primary to JHS? It was President Kufuor’s NPP government,” Mr. Hadzide noted.

He also cited the establishment of the Metro Mass Transit system, which he said greatly improved public transport and eased mobility for many citizens.

“Metro Mass was another NPP initiative — these are things that made life better for the ordinary Ghanaian,” he added.

Touching on more recent achievements, Mr. Hadzide pointed to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy introduced by President Nana Akufo-Addo as a major relief for many families.

“Free SHS is one of the biggest social interventions in our history — it was the NPP that brought it,” he stated.

According to him, businesses also thrived under the NPP due to favorable policies and stable governance.

While acknowledging that there may have been “minor hitches” during the party’s tenure, he insisted that the overall impact of NPP governments had always been positive.

“Even if there were challenges, the truth is that NPP governments make life easier for Ghanaians. Businesses grow, children go to school, and families get some breathing space,” he explained.

Mr. Hadzide warned that the current conditions under the NDC government could lead the country back into hardship if Ghanaians were not careful.

“We are not in government today, and if we don’t work hard to return in 2028, Ghanaians may fall back into the mess we’ve seen before,” he cautioned.

He called on all NPP members to unite and work hard toward a return to power in the next election to continue improving the lives of Ghanaians.

Hannah Bissiw exposes attempt to influence release of arrested illegal miners https://www.adomonline.com/hanna-bissiw-exposes-attempt-to-influence-release-of-arrested-illegal-miners/ Mon, 30 Jun 2025 16:33:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2549793 The Administrator of the Minerals Development Fund (MDF), Dr. Hannah Louisa Bissiw-Kotei, has revealed that someone recently contacted her to plead on behalf of some illegal miners who had been arrested.

Dr. Bissiw-Kotei made the disclosure in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, following a series of arrests and community engagements in the Ashanti Region.

However, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Women’s Organiser declined to mention any names.

“The person gave me a long history about how far back we go and wanted to see if the arrested individuals could be released. But I made it clear that it would not be possible. They have caused destruction and must face the consequences,” she stated.

Reaffirming her commitment to the fight against illegal mining, despite threats to her life, she vowed to uphold the integrity of the Minerals Development Fund, insisting it would not be tarnished by any bribery scandal.

“He tried everything possible, but it didn’t work, so he finally mustered the courage to call me. He said they are willing to accept any conditions we give. But they must face the full rigours of the law, because bribery will not work at the Minerals Development Fund,” she stressed.

The outspoken politician emphasized that she is personally committed to championing the cause of mining communities and will stop at nothing to defend their interests.

You should know better – MP tells Asiedu Nketia for calling EC incompetent [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/you-should-know-better-mp-tells-asiedu-nketia-for-calling-ec-incompetent-video/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:09:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548797 Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has criticised National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, for his persistent attacks on the Electoral Commission (EC), urging him to rather demonstrate leadership.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the MP said someone with Asiedu Nketia’s political experience should know better.

“Asiedu Nketia has done politics for long. He should be the one showing us the right thing. You don’t go around accusing the EC of being incompetent while you are the ones creating the problems” he said.

He warned that if these tensions are not properly addressed, it could lead to dangerous consequences for the country’s democracy.

“If this issue is not resolved, it can bring bigger problems. Every government may want to have their own EC, and that’s not good for democracy.”

Commenting on the possibility of a petition to the presidency for the removal of the EC Chair, Jean Mensa, he said:

“With what they are doing and saying, it won’t be shocking at all. But even if it gets there, I hope the judges and the committee that may look into the issue will rise to the occasion and serve the interest of the nation.”

He also alleged that the NDC has a history of pushing for the removal of key figures in state institutions.

“Their actions show that they will even be behind removing the EC Chair, just like they did to the Chief Justice.”

Baffour Awuah added that Ghanaians are closely observing the behaviour of the NDC and will respond at the right time.

“Ghanaians are watching Asiedu Nketia and his NDC people who are eager to see the removal of the EC. But when the time for elections comes, they will show you where power truly lies.”

His reaction follows Asiedu Nketia’s recent press briefing in which he described the EC’s leadership as unfit for purpose and demanded their removal, citing a pattern of alleged electoral mismanagement.

We planned to resume our strike today, but… – GRNMA [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/we-planned-to-resume-our-strike-today-but-grnma-listen/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 20:03:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548790 The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has revealed that it came close to resuming its strike action today, June 26, 2025.

The General Secretary, David Koranteng Twum, disclosed this in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen.

“The National Council decided that we resume the strike today, but after extensive discussions between Wednesday and Thursday, we reached a consensus to rescind our decision,” he stated.

Mr. Twum emphasised that had the strike gone ahead, the association would not have provided any roadmap, adding that nurses in the country are not given the respect they deserve.

He stated that the association has given the government until July 10, 2025, to meet four key demands, warning that the deadline is non-negotiable.

He further cautioned that if the government fails to act within the set timeframe, the GRNMA will not hesitate to resume its industrial action.

The GRNMA on June 13 suspended its strike, which began on June 2, following “fruitful” negotiations with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health and government representatives.

A follow-up meeting was scheduled for Thursday, June 26, but was postponed due to the unavailability of some key stakeholders.

The crucial meeting was to determine whether the truce holds or if nurses and midwives will once again take industrial action, which previously disrupted healthcare services nationwide.

You’re a ‘small boy’ in NPP; tone down your utterances – Former MP slams Nana B https://www.adomonline.com/youre-a-small-boy-in-npp-tone-down-your-utterances-former-mp-slams-nana-b/ Thu, 26 Jun 2025 12:32:54 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2548653 Former Subin Member of Parliament (MP), Eugene Boakye Antwi, has taken a swipe at New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, urging him to be more measured in his public utterances.

In a strongly worded response during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Antwi described Nana B as a “small boy” in the party whose comments often lack the maturity expected of someone in his position.

“Excuse me to say, he is a small boy in the party. Being a National Organiser doesn’t make you a senior member. He is my young brother, and I will urge him to be measured in his utterances. His tone and language must reflect his position,” he said.

Mr. Antwi warned that speaking out of emotion could backfire.
“When he talks out of emotion, we will also use emotions to vote. As a National Organiser, the masses must gravitate towards you, so you must be patient in dealing with the people. In rebuilding, we must be open to suggestions. If the ideas don’t help, we discard them—not insult people,” he cautioned.

His comments follow Nana B’s response to NPP stalwart Dr. Arthur Kennedy, who recently questioned the timing of the party’s presidential primaries. Dr. Kennedy argued that choosing a flagbearer at this point—after the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections—was premature and could be disastrous. He likened the party’s rebuilding process to constructing a building that requires a solid foundation.

However, Nana B dismissed the analogy, insisting the NPP’s structures are already in place and ready to support the party’s future.

But Mr. Antwi believes Nana B’s reaction was unhelpful and divisive.
“We need sober reflection, not bravado. Rebuilding after a loss takes more than structures—it requires humility, unity, and open-mindedness,” he said.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the former Deputy Minister for Works and Housing stressed the need for collaboration among all party stakeholders, cautioning that internal divisions could derail the party’s chances.

“Former President Kufuor said it all—when you are given power temporarily, it doesn’t mean you own the party. I believe in a tradition, not a faction, because a camp or faction cannot win power,” he stated.

He added, “None of the presidential aspirants’ camps, including Bawumia, Ken, Joe Ghartey, Adutwum, Bryan Acheampong—none of them can single-handedly secure power for us unless we unite.”

Mr. Antwi described the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections as a necessary wake-up call and urged the party to prioritise internal healing and reform.

“We must fix ourselves first. We need to reconnect with the people and rebuild the trust of Ghanaians,” he said.

He further called for a return to the party’s foundational principles.

“We must realign our party with the values of the founding fathers. We must revisit the traditions and ideologies on which the party was built,” he urged.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Antwi said the results were a wake-up call for the party to reflect on its leadership approach and connection with the electorate.

“The 2024 election was not just a political loss. It was a wake-up call. At some point, as a leader, you need to sit down and listen to your people,” he said.

According to him, the NPP lost touch with the very people who voted them into power due to rigid systems and messaging that failed to resonate with the needs of ordinary Ghanaians.

“Our systems became too rigid, and our messaging disconnected from the people we were elected to serve,” he explained.

Mr. Antwi specifically cited the introduction of the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), which was widely criticized by the public.

“If the people who voted for you tell you the E-Levy won’t help them, why then do you go ahead and implement it?” he questioned.

2024 election was not just a politcal loss but a wake up call - Eugene Antwi

He also expressed concern over policy inconsistencies, pointing out that while ordinary Ghanaians were burdened with new taxes, others were living in luxury and avoiding basic obligations.

“Meanwhile, people have built big houses and are renting them out without paying property rates. There were a lot of things that just weren’t right. So how did we expect the masses to vote for us again?” he asked. “They definitely will vote against us, and that’s why we lost.”

Looking ahead, Eugene Boakye Antwi stressed the need for unity and reform within the party to stand a chance in the 2028 general elections.

“We need stability in the party. We must listen, adjust, and work to win back the trust of Ghanaians,” he added.

Following the NPP’s announcement to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, Dr. Kennedy questioned the decision, asking, “Why pick it in early 2026 when you could wait till mid-2027 or late 2027?”

He argued that the party’s internal discourse had reached a boiling point, and selecting a flagbearer at this stage might be premature and potentially disastrous.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana B, who disagreed with Dr. Kennedy’s stance, described the move as a success for the party.

According to him, the NPP’s structures are already firmly in place, and it is misleading to liken the party to a building under construction.

“Are we going to build a house? The NPP structure is already there, so what are we going to build? Are we going to build a skyscraper?” he quizzed.

Nana B argued that 99% of the tensions and internal wrangling within the party stem from the presidential primaries.

“The comparison with a building is totally unacceptable because nobody has said after the presidential primaries, we will hold national, regional, constituency, and polling station elections. We only agreed on the presidential,” he stated.
