Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam morning show, the Minister described the claims as baseless and absurd.

“Why would I offer to sign a service maintenance agreement if I was going to ask for a commission? It doesn’t even make sense. He can go to hell and say what he wants. What’s important is that I do the job I was given,” he said.

Mr. Akandoh explained that the dispute arose from a difference over a new maintenance agreement, not financial misconduct.

“The service maintenance agreement is completely different from an extension. I never demanded a commission. If someone is determined to destroy me, they will lie, but it won’t work,” he added.

The Minister recalled a tense confrontation with the vendor at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

“This guy insulted me on the streets of New York, head-on. Not everything we hear or see should be believed,” he said.

He further stressed his integrity and humility, describing himself as a “village boy and a rice farmer” who is not motivated by money.

“Even after the UNGA, I offered him another service maintenance agreement. When he came with an invoice for nearly a million dollars, I asked, “On what basis can we pay you this?” That’s how reasonable I am,” Dr. Akandoh said.

The Minister concluded by noting that public service comes with challenges and false accusations, but he remains focused on his work.

“People are trying to tarnish my image, but I am looking out for bigger issues than this,” he said.

I will resign if… Akandoh vows over LHIMS saga [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/i-will-resign-if-akandoh-vows-over-lhims-saga-listen/ Thu, 30 Oct 2025 15:08:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2594351 Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has issued a bold challenge to the contractor of the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS), saying he is willing to resign if there is any proof that he demanded money or a commission.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam morning show, Mr. Akandoh said, “If he has any evidence to show that I, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, have demanded even one Ghana cedi from him, I will step down immediately. Let him bring it out, and I will resign.”

He continued, “If there is any proof that I have taken money from him since I assumed office as Health Minister, I will resign without hesitation. These allegations are baseless and completely unfounded.”

Mr. Akandoh added that working in public office often attracts unfounded accusations.

“If you are in public office, some of these things will come. I am prepared for worse than this. But I stand firm that I have done nothing wrong,” he stressed.

His comments come amid ongoing tensions surrounding LHIMS, which the Minister has accused of being deliberately shut down by the vendor following disagreements over a new service maintenance agreement.

However, Mr. Akandoh has reaffirmed his commitment to transparency and accountability in public service, insisting that he will continue to oversee health sector projects with integrity.

Father accuses Kwahu Ridge SHTS of denying daughter admission over sickle cell condition https://www.adomonline.com/father-accuses-kwahu-ridge-shts-of-denying-daughter-admission-over-sickle-cell-condition/ Wed, 22 Oct 2025 16:37:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2591386 A first-year female student has reportedly been denied admission to Kwahu Ridge Senior High Technical School (SHTS) at Obo Kwahu in the Eastern Region due to her health condition.

The 14-year-old student’s father, Gideon Kissi, made the claim during an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, alleging that his daughter was turned away because she has sickle cell disease.

Mr. Kissi revealed that each crisis episode typically lasts between three and four hours when it occurs, but it happens intermittently, usually every four to six months, and most often at dawn.

According to him, the school was informed about the child’s medical condition when he went to collect her prospectus.

School authorities allegedly instructed the family to provide her medical report upon reporting to school.

However, when the student arrived at the school on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, she was allegedly denied admission.

“Her mother took her to the school, and they were told she could not be admitted. The excuse was that the school has no vehicle to transport her to Atibie Government Hospital in case of a crisis. So they had to bring all her items back home. My daughter is distraught and sad because all her friends are in school,” Mr. Kissi told host Abena Opokua Ahwenee.

He added that efforts to obtain an official transfer letter or documentation to facilitate her placement in another school have so far failed.

“The plan was to seek admission at Kwahu SHS, which is closer to home so she could be a day student, but we’ve not been successful because the school refused to give us a letter or any document to assist us,” he explained.

As of now, Kwahu Ridge SHTS authorities have not responded publicly to the allegations.

Galamsey threatening Ghana’s energy security – Adomako-Mensah warns https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-threatening-ghanas-energy-security-adomako-mensah-warns/ Fri, 03 Oct 2025 11:23:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584976 The Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has sounded the alarm that illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is fast becoming a threat to Ghana’s energy security.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Adomako-Mensah explained that the menace goes beyond destroying farmlands and polluting rivers and is now undermining the country’s ability to generate and transmit electricity.

According to him, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has already cautioned that if galamsey activities are not brought under control, power generation will soon become a major challenge, with transmission to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) through GRIDCo also at risk.

“Most of the installations we visited have security arrangements, some even with soldiers on guard. But because of the scale of illegal mining, two or three soldiers cannot protect these critical sites,” he stated.

The Afigya North Kwabre MP added that GRIDCo faces an even greater risk, as most of its transmission pylons are located in remote bush areas where illegal miners operate.

Despite the company’s own security measures, the MP warned that they are insufficient against the growing threat.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah stressed that without strong political will, the situation could worsen.

“If we do not depoliticise the galamsey crisis, it will be devastating for all of us. We plead with the government to introduce stringent measures to end this,” he said.

The comments of the former Deputy Energy Minister follow recent disclosures by GRIDCo that illegal miners have been attacking its installations, damaging infrastructure, and, in some cases, shooting at staff members.

The company has warned that these actions pose a direct danger to the stability of Ghana’s power supply.

The MP emphasised that the government must move beyond rhetoric and act decisively, noting that despite earlier promises, the galamsey menace continues to expand with dire consequences for the nation.

This is not the NPP we know; things are getting worse – Boakye Agyarko [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/this-is-not-the-npp-we-know-things-are-getting-worse-boakye-agyarko-video/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 19:32:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584073 Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has expressed concern over the state of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the party is no longer what it used to be.

“This is not the NPP we know; things are getting worse. We have values, principles, and discipline. Today, we can’t say the NPP we formed so many years ago is what we are seeing today. A lot of things are not going well,” Mr. Agyarko said in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show.

Mr. Agyarko, who has announced his intention to contest for the position of National Chairmanship, noted that some of the problems started a long time ago but were ignored until they crossed a critical line.

“In 2024, when we went for elections, Ghanaians voted against us massively, and even among ourselves, we voted against ourselves. When you listen to what people were saying, they blamed us, saying that the NPP we knew years back had changed completely. They said it is better to go back to our old ways, where love and unity were around everyone,” he added.

He further criticized the party for failing to heed advice even after the 2024 elections.

“Every day you hear issues in the NPP because of internal squabbles. These issues should have been stopped, but they keep making noise and refuse to listen. Some utterances from party members are not good; they only destroy the party and make it unpopular,” Mr. Agyarko said.

His comments come after the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, announced his readiness to appear before the party’s National Disciplinary Committee following an invitation from General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua.

Illegal miners have taken over Akonta Mining – Wontumi [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/illegal-miners-have-taken-over-akonta-mining-wontumi-listen/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 15:54:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583990 Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has distanced himself from illegal mining activities reported at Akonta Mining, insisting that galamsey operators have taken over parts of his concession.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Wontumi said reports reaching him confirmed that illegal miners had invaded Akonta Mining and were carrying out galamsey there.

“I heard reports that some illegal miners have invaded Akonta Mining and are mining there illegally. I told my people to report the matter to the police and even take pictures so that we can identify those behind it,” he said.

According to him, despite being the owner of the concession, he is wrongly blamed for galamsey activities.

“Right now, people are doing galamsey on my concession at Akonta Mining. If people are mining illegally there, is it fair to turn around and blame me? I am not the one behind it,” he stressed.

Wontumi on galamsey at Akonta Mining

Wontumi further alleged that his concession in Samreboi has also been invaded by illegal miners, whom he claims are members of the opposition NDC.

“Even in Samreboi, on my legitimate concession, some NDC members have gone there to do galamsey, and yet people blame me. I have reported the matter to the police, informed my lawyer, and will act on his advice. I am not above or beneath the law,” he explained.

He stated that he has complied with all legal requirements and presented his documents to the relevant authorities.

“I have shown my lease and all my documents to the Minerals Commission. In fact, I am the only mining company owner in Ghana who has openly presented my lease to the government. So what is my crime if I have a legitimate lease?” he questioned.

Wontumi reiterated his call for authorities to investigate and hold accountable those carrying out galamsey on his concession, instead of pointing fingers at him.

Wontumi backs govt’s declaration of military zones to combat galamsey [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/wontumi-backs-govts-declaration-of-military-zones-to-combat-galamsey-listen/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 13:16:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583949 Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has expressed support for the government’s recent declaration of all water bodies and forest reserves as security zones to curb illegal mining in Ghana.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Wontumi said they just have to ensure that people don’t go and engage in illegal mining.

“Let’s not make ourselves like the Pharisees, who impose the difficult laws on people while keeping the easy ones for themselves. If this is what the President has said, then we welcome it. We need to do the right thing and ensure the laws are enforced to help Ghana,” he said.

He added, “If he says he will declare all forests as military zones, then we support it and pray for him. He is our president until Bawumia becomes the president to continue.”

Wontumi also addressed his own involvement in mining concessions:

“I don’t work at the forest, but it’s true I applied for a concession, just like other companies. I did everything properly. When they were about to give me the lease, I realized illegal miners had invaded the area. I tried to stop them, but I was told not to intervene and that the Forestry Commission would take charge. Since then, I have left it to the Forestry Commission.”

Wontumi on galamsey fight

He urged the military to enforce the new measures responsibly:

“We also call on the military to do the right thing and protect those zones, just as they have been directed. We all know the military are very responsible and disciplined people. We pray that every decision the President has made will be implemented properly to restore peace,” he said.

Wontumi’s comments come after the government declared all water bodies and forest reserves as security zones to intensify the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The move aims to protect the country’s environment and critical natural resources, especially rivers and forest reserves, which are under severe threat from galamsey activities.

NPP flagbearer race: All aspirants are honourable, but.. – Wontumi [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-flagbearer-race-all-aspirants-are-honourable-but-wontumi-listen/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 13:10:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583961 Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has expressed confidence that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will win the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.

He explained in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, that Bawumia is effectively going unopposed in the primaries and that those who supported him in the last elections have not regretted their choice.

Wontumi said party members are united in their support for Dr. Bawumia and believe he will emerge the winner, noting that the NPP is a single party working together.

“I see that Bawumia is going for the primaries unopposed, although we are having elections. Those who voted for him in the last elections have not regretted their choice,” he said.

Wontumi stressed the importance of respectful campaigning, urging party members to avoid insulting or attacking other candidates.

He said all discussions and engagements should be encouraging and focused on the party’s unity.

“The only thing I won’t condone is insulting others. You can campaign for your candidate, but do not attack anyone. All talks should be encouraging, not insulting,” he noted.

He also praised the quality of the candidates contesting the primaries, stating that Dr. Bawumia is the most suitable choice given his experience as former Vice President and as a previous presidential candidate for the party.

Wontumi added that it is his wish for Dr. Bawumia to win both the primaries and the general elections so he can serve as president for all Ghanaians.

“I am happy the NPP has great people contesting, unlike other parties, but Bawumia is the best among them. He has served as Vice President and was our previous candidate. It is better we give him the chance. It is my wish he wins the primaries and the general elections so he can become president for all of us,” he said.

According to a recent poll by Global Info Analytics, Dr. Bawumia leads the NPP presidential primaries with 47% of delegate support.

The poll, published on September 29, 2025, shows him as the clear front-runner, although a significant number of delegates remain undecided, indicating that the race could still change in the coming weeks.

EOCO has seized about 15 cars from me – Chairman Wontumi [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/eoco-has-seized-about-15-cars-from-me-chairman-wontumi-audio/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 12:13:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583935 Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has disclosed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has impounded nearly 15 of his cars.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Wontumi revealed that the seized vehicles include luxury brands such as a Bentley and a Rolls Royce.

He explained that all the vehicles were acquired legitimately and had cleared the necessary port duties.

“At the moment, EOCO has taken close to 15 of my cars, but I have decided not to speak. The vehicles are in EOCO’s custody. I bought them from Bright Selby at Asylum Down near the NPP office. He registered them, paid the duties, and did everything. My Bentley, Rolls Royce, and others are all there,” Wontumi said.

He stressed that despite the development, he had chosen to remain calm and rely on divine intervention.

“I have been quiet because I know that at the right time, God will intervene and speak for me,” he added.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27, 2025, after being invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning over alleged serious criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

He described his arrest experience as both physical and spiritual, claiming that he sensed the presence of deceased relatives — a sign, in his view, that his life was close to ending.

NPP election: Nobody can manipulate delegates’ register – Wontumi assures [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-election-nobody-can-manipulate-delegates-register-wontumi-assures-audio/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 11:06:09 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583875 The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dismissed allegations that some regional chairmen are plotting to remove the names of delegates from polling station registers ahead of the party’s upcoming elections.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Wontumi assured party members that the NPP’s internal election processes are highly structured and tamper-proof.

He explained that the system leaves no room for any individual—whether chairman, regional, constituency, or polling station—to alter the names of delegates.

“The procedure is clear. NEC decides on a date, which is approved by the National Council. A delegation is then sent from the national level to supervise elections at the polling stations, with constituency executives also involved. Afterwards, electoral area elections are conducted for councils of elders and patrons, who later take part in constituency executive elections,” he outlined.

According to Wontumi, duplicate copies of election records are submitted to both the regional and national offices, supported by both manual and computerized data. Delegates are also given the opportunity to verify registers before elections are held.

“All aspirants are currently engaging delegates and know their whereabouts, whether alive or deceased. Before voting, the list is cross-checked with what is submitted to the Electoral Commission. So there is absolutely no way anyone can remove names,” he stressed.

He further urged members to remain vigilant but reassured them that the process is rigorous enough to safeguard against tampering.

Wontumi’s assurance comes in response to comments by the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, who in a televised interview claimed he could influence the compilation of polling station albums. Abronye DC had threatened to strike out the names of certain delegates from the party’s register, sparking tension among grassroots members.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman, however, maintained that such threats hold no weight since the party’s internal structures and verification systems make manipulation impossible.

Meanwhile, the NPP has rejected the claim, insisting that no individual has the authority to control the process.

Those making noise should stop – Abronye replies Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team https://www.adomonline.com/those-making-noise-should-stop-abronye-replies-kennedy-agyapongs-campaign-team/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 16:33:58 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583704 Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, has dismissed claims that he or other party officials are attempting to manipulate votes ahead of the 2026 presidential primaries.

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Abronye DC said, “Bawumia doesn’t need anyone to steal votes for him to become the presidential candidate. The fresh air around the NPP shows that delegates are ready to support him, and we are not ready to change him.”

He added that his assessment comes from firsthand engagement with delegates.

“I went to campaign, and I know what I am saying. I spoke with polling station executives who will come out and vote massively. When I support Bawumia, I meet those who vote, and they have told me they will endorse him,” he explained.

Abronye on Bawumia

Addressing claims that he has threatened to remove names from the delegate register, Abronye DC clarified that a circulating video had been doctored.

“The original video clearly shows that I said Bawumia doesn’t need anyone to steal votes. I never said I was going to remove anyone’s name from the album. Those making noise should stop,” he insisted.

He further questioned the credibility of critics, including members of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, who have demanded disciplinary action against him and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).

“How can someone who is not even listed in the album have a say in who endorses Bawumia? Their names are not even on the register, so why make so much noise?” Abronye DC said.

His comments follow calls from Mr. Agyapong’s team for immediate disciplinary measures against the two regional chairmen, accusing them of conduct that could undermine party unity.

Follow party laws before demanding action – Justin Kodua to Ken Agyapong’s campaign team https://www.adomonline.com/follow-party-laws-before-demanding-action-justin-kodua-to-ken-agyapong-campaign-team/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 13:07:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583580 New Patriotic Party (NPP), General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, has clarified that he has not received any formal complaints regarding Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, or Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, also known as Abronye DC.

His comments come after NPP flagbearer, Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team called for immediate disciplinary action against Wontumi and Abronye DC.

The campaign referenced videos circulating on social media, in which the two regional chairmen allegedly claimed that the party’s electoral roll and processes were being manipulated to favour a particular candidate ahead of the January 2026 presidential primaries.

But speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Frimpong said, “Personally, no one has brought this release or notice to my attention. I only saw it on social media, just like anyone else.”

He added that while he respects the reference made by Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, to the party constitution, he expects a proper understanding of party laws before demanding action.

“I was expecting that when he made the reference, he should have read Article 4, which talks about discipline and grievance procedures. Our party is not one where you wake up and suspend anyone like that,” Mr. Frimpong explained.

He noted that there are correct procedures for handling internal disputes.

JFK on Ken's camp call for sanction

“If someone does something and you think it’s against the party laws, you first lodge a complaint. My question to Kwasi Kwarteng is: has he or anyone lodged a complaint against Wontumi or Abronye? That’s what some party people don’t understand. They are blaming me or asking me to suspend someone when no formal complaint has been made,” he added.

Mr. Frimpong stressed the importance of following the law.

“If we are working with the laws, then you have to go according to what our laws say. As it stands now, no complaints have come to my table. If a petition comes and I don’t act on it, then you can blame me, but until then, I cannot do anything.”

Justin Kodua responds to Wontumi over primaries controversy [Listen]     https://www.adomonline.com/justin-kodua-responds-to-wontumi-over-primaries-controversy-listen/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 13:02:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583567 General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has clarified his position on recent remarks made by Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, regarding the party’s presidential primaries.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Frimpong explained that as the party’s spokesperson, it is his duty to respond whenever issues or statements about the NPP arise.

“If I keep quiet or refuse to speak on any matter, it means what the person said—whether true or not—would go unheard,” he stated.

Mr. Frimpong noted that following Wontumi’s comments, he issued a statement addressing concerns about both Wontumi and Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

He said the statements from the chairmen did not reflect the party’s processes accurately.

Regarding a video that allegedly showed Wontumi claiming the date for the presidential primaries was selected to favour a particular candidate, Mr. Frimpong clarified,

“The decision for the date was taken by the National Council. The leaders we have are all bigger and respectable, and they can make such decisions. Even people were in favour of the date because they knew it would allow someone to lead the front when the flagbearer is selected.”

JFK on Wontumi statement

He further dismissed suggestions that the party’s register was being used to benefit any aspirant.

“I would be very surprised if anyone says the register is there to favour someone. This register is not new; it has been used before. The album had nothing to do with any presidential aspirant, and everyone supported its use,” he said.

The general scribe also addressed claims that Abronye DC intended to remove some executives from polling stations.

“Even with the system we operate, no regional party official has the right to omit anyone from the album,” he stated.

On the issue of whether the video was doctored, Mr. Frimpong stated, “Until I made the release, I had not seen any statement showing the video was doctored. Everything I addressed was based on what I had seen and the facts available to me.”

His remarks come after Wontumi rejected suggestions that he maligned the National Council in his engagements with the grassroots, describing the General Secretary’s comments as unfair.

Earlier, on Sunday, September 28, 2025, Frimpong had issued a statement urging party stakeholders to disregard pronouncements made by Wontumi and Abronye DC, stressing that no individual has unilateral control over party processes, including the compilation of polling station albums or the timing of the presidential primaries.

Justin Kodua sends important message on NPP presidential primaries [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/justin-kodua-sends-important-message-on-npp-presidential-primaries-listen/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 12:13:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583556 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has assured party members and the public that the upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026, will be free, fair, and transparent.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kodua said the party’s internal processes were on track.

“So far, everything is on course. The vetting committee is done with its job, and the election committee is also doing its work. We are waiting for the report to be submitted to the party so that NEC and the National Council will assess it between 7 and 9 October. After that, the notice of poll of those who will be cleared will be published,” he explained.

He stressed that measures have been put in place to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants and delegates.

“We are actively working to ensure that every candidate gets the album by the end of November so they can scrutinise it. In 2023/2024, the NPP organised one of the best parliamentary elections, devoid of noise and chaos. It will be done again this time around. Both winners and losers will know it was a fair ground,” Kodua said.

He further assured that no one within the party’s hierarchy would be allowed to manipulate the register.

“I can assure party members nobody can abuse their office to add or remove any names from the album,” he emphasised.

The January 2026 primaries will see five aspirants, all cleared through vetting, competing for the flagbearer slot.

They include former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, Bosomtwe MP and former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong.

The contest is regarded as a crucial step in reorganising the NPP after its 2024 electoral defeat, with party leaders emphasising that fairness will be central to restoring grassroots confidence.

NPP is in a difficult and delicate situation; let’s not pretend – Justin Kodua [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/npp-is-in-a-difficult-and-delicate-situation-lets-not-pretend-justin-kodua-audio/ Mon, 29 Sep 2025 11:27:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2583525 The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has acknowledged that the party is navigating one of its most challenging periods following its defeat in the 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Kodua emphasized that the party’s current state cannot be downplayed.
“We cannot pretend. The NPP is in a very difficult and delicate situation,” he said.

With preparations for the NPP’s presidential primaries underway, he noted that elections naturally bring tension, mistrust, and occasional backstabbing. However, he stressed that leadership must remain firm and neutral to maintain order.

While some believe that national executives have abandoned their responsibilities, Kodua insisted this is not the case. With National Chairman Stephen Ntim unwell, he explained that he had to take on additional duties until First National Vice Chairman Smith Butey stepped in to assist.
“We are all doing our best. As General Secretary, I must remain neutral because if not, by the end of everything, there will be problems,” he said.

Kodua also disclosed that the party is working on expanding the Electoral College and updating the delegate register following the outcomes of the national delegates conference in July 2025. He noted that the IT team is ensuring a credible and comprehensive polling album.

Addressing calls for sanctions against party members over alleged misconduct, he clarified the limits of his role.
“It is not in my power to sanction or dismiss people from the party. Article 4 of the constitution spells out the processes. My role is administrative, compiling the album and speaking as spokesperson, but there is a limit,” he explained.

Drawing an analogy, Kodua likened his role to that of a football star:
“As the General Secretary, we may be like Lionel Messi on the field, but if you don’t have adequate support, you will be fruitless,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to his responsibilities, emphasizing that unity and discipline among all executives will be crucial to steering the party through these challenging times.

OSP must work with FBI to extradite Ken Ofori-Atta or… – Mustapha Gbande [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/osp-must-work-with-fbi-to-extradite-ken-ofori-atta-or-mustapha-gbande-audio/ Thu, 25 Sep 2025 15:22:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2582497 Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has expressed frustration over the delayed prosecution of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta for alleged economic crimes during his tenure.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr. Gbande questioned why the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has not collaborated with international bodies like the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to hold the former minister accountable.

“If the OSP cannot work with the FBI to bring Ken Ofori-Atta, then the FBI cannot come to Ghana to take people to the U.S.,” he said. “They extradite Ghanaians for crimes abroad but cannot extradite Ken Ofori-Atta to face prosecution in his own country for crimes committed here.”

Mr. Gbande further accused Ofori-Atta of portraying himself as a victim while ordinary Ghanaians continue to suffer the consequences of his policies.

“Does anybody think Ken Ofori-Atta is innocent or has treated Ghanaians fairly? He punished citizens, including pensioners, and was part of the PDS scandal. Anything scandalous under Nana Addo, he was the PRO and actually superintended it,” he added.

The OSP had declared the former minister wanted after months of failed attempts to summon him over alleged corruption and abuse of office.

Authorities noted that no official medical documentation had been submitted to justify his extended stay abroad.

However, Ofori-Atta’s wife, Angela Ofori-Atta, later confirmed that he had successfully undergone surgery for prostate cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

She explained that the procedure, a robot-assisted radical prostatectomy, took place on Friday, June 13, and lasted over four hours.

Oppong Nkrumah explains why COVID levy was necessary [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/oppong-nkrumah-explains-why-covid-levy-was-necessary-listen/ Thu, 25 Sep 2025 14:41:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2582446 Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi and former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has addressed claims that the government spent COVID-19 relief funds recklessly, explaining the economic rationale behind the expenditures.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said:

“Some are claiming that we spent the COVID money without accountability. Let me explain. Ghana’s economy revolves around what we call the ‘Golden Triangle’—Accra, Takoradi, and Kumasi. During the lockdown, these regions, which generate the bulk of government revenue, were shut down. For a month, there was almost no revenue coming in.”

He further explained the challenges of taxing the economy during the pandemic.

“If we had tried to levy the economy at that time, it would have taken a year to see any meaningful revenue. Meanwhile, the government still had to pay teachers, all public sector workers, and provide support to citizens. Unlike the U.S., where programs like FELO helped individuals, we in Ghana paid salaries and even provided free water and electricity to help people cope.”

Oppong Nkrumah on covid expenses

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah also defended the COVID-19 levy introduced later.

“When the debt burden rose, we had to go to the IMF because the economy was hit hard. That’s why we introduced the COVID levy to stabilize the situation. Now, the NDC came to power promising to remove it, but they have not. Why? Because it continues to help the economy. When we were in government, some people accused us of misusing the funds, even blaming me personally. Today, the same mechanisms are benefiting the country.”

He welcomed President John Mahama’s recent admission at the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, noting the long-term economic impact of the pandemic.

“I’m happy the President acknowledged that COVID-19 set the global economy back by 20 years. We spent money to revive Ghana’s economy, but at the time, people used it against us politically. It is only fair that the truth is recognized.”

During the UN General Debate on September 23, 2025, President Mahama outlined his vision for African health sovereignty, a concept he calls the “Accra Reset.”

Mr. Oppong Nkrumah questioned how the President could now recognize the pandemic’s economic impact, given that while in opposition, he had dismissed suggestions that COVID-19 affected the global economy.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Oppong Nkrumah questioned the government’s inaction.

“How many months have you been in power without solving galamsey? All the promises you made that you would declare a state of emergency when you assumed office—up to now, nothing has been done. Does that mean we were the bad ones while in government?” he questioned.

He added, “What has changed? The only thing that has changed is the leadership in power. Let’s look at the actions they promised while we were in office. Have they declared a state of emergency, or did they just tell citizens what they wanted to hear? Today, our water bodies are 90 times worse than before.”

NKRUMAH ON GALAMSEY

Oppong Nkrumah also cautioned that future political promises must be scrutinized carefully:

“I hope they live long for Ghanaians to see their mess and the promises they made but never fulfilled. Next time, citizens must think twice when such promises are made because too often they are full of words with nothing to show for it.”

His comments follow a call by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference on September 18, urging President John Mahama to declare a state of emergency in areas devastated by galamsey.

Meanwhile, the government has announced steps to protect Ghana’s water bodies and natural resources from further damage caused by illegal mining.

God bless Mahama and grant him long life – Oppong Nkrumah [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/god-bless-mahama-and-grant-him-long-life-oppong-nkrumah-audio/ Thu, 25 Sep 2025 13:32:39 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2582437 Ofoase-Ayirebi Member of Parliament and former Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has prayed for God’s blessings and long life for President John Dramani Mahama following his acknowledgement of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on Ghana’s economy.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah recalled that ahead of the 2024 general elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), then in opposition, dismissed claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that global shocks—including the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war—had contributed significantly to Ghana’s economic challenges.

“God bless President Mahama and grant him long life for speaking the truth. Before the elections, he and his team insisted our difficulties were due to mismanagement. They even mocked us on social media, nicknaming Dr. Bawumia as ‘Bawuliar.’ Today, he goes to the United Nations to admit that COVID-19 has derailed the global economy for 20 years,” he said.

The lawmaker described Mahama’s recent statement as a U-turn, pointing out that during the election campaign, the NDC argued that Ghanaians’ economic hardships were solely caused by poor leadership and not by global crises.

“Their main argument was not about the management of COVID-19 funds, but that the hardships were solely caused by mismanagement. Now he admits COVID played a major role. Unfortunately, it is too late because they secured power on the back of propaganda,” Mr. Oppong Nkrumah noted.

During the 2024 campaign, the NPP government had consistently highlighted the pandemic and other global shocks as factors that strained Ghana’s economy, while the NDC maintained that corruption and reckless economic management were to blame.

At the time, former President Mahama downplayed the international impact, even stating that “the Russia bomb is not close to Ghana” and that the economic challenges were mismanaged locally.

His recent remarks at the United Nations, acknowledging that the effects of COVID-19 will disrupt global economies for two decades, have reignited political debate in Ghana.

For Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, the significance lies in the fact that Mahama lived long enough to make this confession.

“This shows Ghanaians have a short memory, just as he once said. But at least, by God’s grace, he has lived to set the record straight, even if it comes after winning power,” he added.

You can support any candidate, but you dare not… – Bryan Acheampong fires at ex-COCOBOD CEO https://www.adomonline.com/you-can-support-any-candidate-but-you-dare-not-bryan-acheampong-fires-at-ex-cocobod-ceo/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 15:04:51 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2582035 Former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has expressed shock at former COCOBOD CEO, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, over claims regarding the abolition of syndicated loans for cocoa purchases.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Mr. Acheampong insisted that as the sector minister at the time, he was the one who championed the policy through all official processes.

“The policy to cancel syndicated loans is not a CEO policy; it is a ministerial policy. Before any matter goes to Cabinet, it is first referred to the Economic Sub-Committee. As the sector minister, I had to defend the proposal there, and again when it went to the main Cabinet. I also stood in Parliament to defend it when issues were raised,” he explained.

He continued, “Yes, you may have contributed, but the credit is shared with everybody who worked on this policy. Even in the past, I have given credit to everyone involved and praised the President at the time for supporting it. But the bold leader who took this idea through all the processes to the end was the sector minister.”

Bryan Acheampong replies former COCOBOD CEO

Mr. Acheampong dismissed Mr. Aidoo’s claims as politically motivated, suggesting that the former CEO was attempting to score points ahead of the 2028 elections.

“I am really surprised that he would attempt to rebut what I have said. I am aware of his political stance. You may support a candidate, but you dare not come on air and claim credit for something you did not champion” he said.

He also clarified the timeline, noting that while Boahen Aidoo served as COCOBOD CEO from 2017 to 2023, syndicated loans were still in use during that period.

“I was the Minister in 2023 and 2024, and that is when this idea of self-financing began to take shape. The concept had been discussed at COCOBOD for a long time, but the CEO did not originate it. The final decision to stop syndication was driven by the Ministry.”

Mr. Acheampong stressed that policy-making is a collective process.

“In the Boardroom, junior staff may disagree on certain aspects, but the policy is polished and finalized only when it is submitted to Cabinet. As the sector minister, I am the only one who can present such matters to the Economic Management Team. Discussions are thorough, and consensus is reached before it goes forward.”

His comments come after Mr. Boahen Aidoo accused Mr. Acheampong of “blatant intellectual plagiarism and dishonesty” over the policy, which Mr. Acheampong firmly rejected.

“The policy was never the CEO’s alone. It is the responsibility of the sector minister to drive such initiatives from conception to Cabinet approval.”

Cocoa Loan Policy was a vision that came to me like a dream – Former COCOBOD CEO https://www.adomonline.com/cocoa-loan-policy-was-a-vision-that-came-to-me-like-a-dream-former-cocobod-ceo/ Wed, 24 Sep 2025 12:32:48 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2581938 Former Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, Joseph Boahen Aidoo, has dismissed claims by former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, that he deserves credit for Ghana’s cocoa self-financing model.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Aidoo stated that the initiative was entirely his creation, describing the vision as coming to him “like a dream.”

He emphasised that Acheampong opposed the policy from the outset.

“I am pained because he opposed the initiative from the very beginning. What people forget is that I have been a Minister before, and as a chief executive you fall under a sector minister. In this case, he wasn’t interested in the initiative and even dismissed it,” Aidoo said.

The former COCOBOD boss explained that he consulted experts, including Prof. Baah Boateng of the University of Ghana, to develop the model.

Despite not being a finance professional, Aidoo said his idea took shape through rigorous discussions with economists and stakeholders.

“They were surprised that as a geographer I could conceive such a financial model. But the idea came to me like a vision, just like all great models. It was not as simple as people talk about. I presented it to many stakeholders, and they all know the design came from me,” he added.

Aidoo insisted the initiative was carefully crafted to stabilise the cedi and reduce Ghana’s dependence on syndicated offshore loans. Ahead of the 2024 elections, he said he actively engaged cocoa farmers, explaining how the model would save the country significant sums of money.

He accused Acheampong of attempting to take credit for a policy he “vehemently opposed” and called on political actors to acknowledge the true origins of the cocoa financing reform.

Kukurantumi: Police beat and dragged deceased suspect on the ground – Chief alleges https://www.adomonline.com/kukurantumi-police-beat-and-dragged-deceased-suspect-on-the-ground-chief/ Mon, 22 Sep 2025 12:39:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2581119 Barimah Owusu Frimpong, the Adonteng Mmratohene of Akyem Kukurantumi, has confirmed reports that the suspect whose death triggered violent protests in the town was brutally beaten and dragged on the ground before being taken to the hospital.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, the chief said the deceased, Bright, popularly known as D-ball, allegedly stabbed a community police assistant in the hand during his arrest.

He was later overpowered, but instead of being taken into custody peacefully, he was subjected to what he described as a merciless beating.

According to Barimah Frimpong, Bright was arrested by the station officer, whose name he only gave as Kumador, and two community police assistants.

“They beat him mercilessly. He was weak, and they held his hand and dragged him on the ground. When he died in the hospital, he was still in handcuffs,” Barimah Owusu Frimpong revealed.

He expressed sadness over the incident, noting that such a violent episode was unprecedented in Kukurantumi.

“I have never witnessed such an incident in Kukurantumi before. I believe it was a result of an adrenaline rush,” he said.

However, the chief appealed to the angry youth to remain calm and allow the authorities to conduct a full investigation.

“We should trust the police to do their work and ensure justice is served. Taking the law into our own hands may harm innocent people,” he cautioned.

Barimah Frimpong also assured residents that traditional leaders will work closely with security agencies to maintain order and prevent a repeat of Sunday’s chaos.

Meanwhile, the Kukurantumi Police Station has been shut down, and personnel have been withdrawn from the community following the violent attack.

Chief gives blow-by-blow account of Kukurantumi clash [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/chief-gives-blow-by-blow-account-of-kukurantumi-clash-audio/ Mon, 22 Sep 2025 12:14:23 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2581116

The Adonteng Mmratohene of Akyem Kukurantumi, Barimah Owusu Frimpong, has confirmed that the young man whose death sparked violent clashes with police was severely beaten before being taken to a clinic, where he later died.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Barimah Owusu Frimpong narrated that he was at home when an assembly member called to alert him of disturbances in the town.

He rushed to the scene and was told that a resident from his area, Bright, popularly known as D-Ball, had died after a confrontation with police.

“The truth is, the police beat him mercilessly. He was rushed to a community clinic in Kukurantumi, and it was there that he passed on,” he disclosed.

He explained that the deceased had previously been accused of stealing a television, a matter he had earlier advised should be reported to the police to avoid chiefs appearing to shield crime.

The issue, he said, had been partly resolved when the TV was returned and apologies offered by the suspect’s family.

Barimah Owusu Frimpong added that new information revealed the deceased was also alleged to be a drug peddler, prompting police to arrest him on Sunday morning.

According to the chief, the arrest turned violent after the suspect reportedly stabbed a community police assistant, leading to the assault that left him fatally injured.

The incident triggered outrage among the youth, who stormed the Kukurantumi Police Station, vandalized property, pelted stones at officers, and attempted to set the building ablaze.

“But for the reinforcement from Koforidua, the situation would have been worse. They pelted stones, and I learned one of the policemen sustained injuries,” he said.

Police personnel have since been withdrawn from the area except for a few guarding the facility, following threats from the youth. Calm has now been restored, with residents resuming their daily activities.

Barimah Owusu Frimpong urged the youth to exercise restraint and avoid attacking all police officers, noting that the incident involved specific individuals.

“Two wrongs do not make a right. It was a station officer, Kumador, and two community police assistants who committed the act, so it will not be fair and right to attack all the policemen,” he appealed.

He confirmed that traditional authorities will meet with the bereaved family to discuss the way forward and help maintain peace in Kukurantumi.

We don’t fight or invoke curses in Kantamanto Market – Coordinator warns traders https://www.adomonline.com/we-dont-fight-or-invoke-curses-in-kantamanto-market-coordinator-warns-traders/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 15:38:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580676 Kantamanto Market Coordinator Kakari Mensah has dismissed claims of leadership confusion, emphasizing that the market operates under clear rules and systems to maintain discipline and order.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem during a visit to the market, Mensah clarified that recognised leaders manage the affairs of traders, countering suggestions that some executives had secretly elected a new chairman.

“The Kantamanto Market has leaders, and we have rules and regulations governing us. It is not true that some executives have colluded to elect a chairman. The market leaders are in charge of traders’ affairs,” he stated.

He added that a disciplinary committee exists to address misconduct, ensuring disputes are resolved peacefully.

“If you flout the law, there is a disciplinary committee to handle the issue. We don’t fight in this market, and we don’t invoke curses,” Mensah stressed.

He reassured traders and the public that the market leadership remains intact and committed to fostering a peaceful and well-regulated business environment.

We agreed to choose one person to speak for all groups – Kantamanto leaders https://www.adomonline.com/we-agreed-to-choose-one-person-to-speak-for-all-groups-kantamanto-leaders/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 14:32:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580663 Vice Chairman of the Used Clothes Association, Daniel Ampadu, has disclosed that the Kantamanto traders have united under a single leadership structure following the fire that destroyed the market earlier this year.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem when the team visited the market, he revealed that the decision was based on advice from President John Mahama.

“When the market got burnt, we were advised by President Mahama that because it’s one big market, we should all come together and get one leader. So when we came back, we made sure we did exactly that,” he explained.

According to him, although the market is divided into sections with each group having its own leaders, all section heads have now agreed to work under one overall leader.

“Every section still has a leader whether chairman, secretary or vice — but we have all chosen one person to represent us. That leader is the one to speak for us in times of need and to stand in for us whenever the market faces challenges,” Mr. Ampadu said.

Vice Chairman Used Clothes Association Daniel Ampadu

He further stressed the security arrangements in place, stating that about 60 personnel are tasked with guarding the market daily.

“We have gates around the market and by 6 pm they are closed so no one can enter to cause destruction. When we stay united like this, it helps the market to improve,” he stressed.

Touching on infrastructure, the Vice Chairman mentioned that the lack of electricity remains the biggest challenge.

“The only problem we are working on now is the lights. When the place got burnt, everything was destroyed, including the wiring. But we are done with new wiring, so very soon the lights will be fixed. This will allow others who are trading outside to come inside,” he assured.

Stop selling outside; come inside the market – Kantamanto Coordinator to traders https://www.adomonline.com/stop-selling-outside-come-inside-the-market-kantamanto-coordinator-to-traders/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 14:30:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580660 Kantamanto Market Coordinator, Kakari Mensah, has expressed concern about indiscipline among some traders at the market.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem during the station’s visit to the market, Mr. Mensah said measures that were put in place after the fire disaster earlier this year are being ignored by some traders.

“When our place was not burnt, our leaders put things in place to help the market. We had a task force and security to ensure discipline and make sure people who went wrong were dealt with according to the law,” he recalled.

He lamented that despite repeated efforts, some traders continue to sell along the railway lines instead of inside the market.

Kakari Mensah Kantamanto Market Cooridnator

“Some of the market people have gone back to the rails to sell when it is not supposed to be like that. I always tell our leaders to do something about it, but they have tried stopping them to no avail,” he said.

Mr. Mensah also condemned the practice where some traders misinform buyers that the market is closed due to the fire incident.

“Sometimes they will even convince buyers that they are not sellers inside and that the place is closed because of the fire. But the truth is, we are working inside, and we want other traders to come inside and do business,” he urged.

According to him, keeping trading activities inside the market is the only way to restore order and discipline at Kantamanto.

My doors are always open to you – Asaki Awingobit to Kantamanto traders [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/my-doors-are-always-open-to-you-asaki-awingobit-to-kantamanto-traders-audio/ Fri, 19 Sep 2025 13:26:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580629 Sampson Asaki Awingobit, Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana, has called on traders at Kantamanto Market to close ranks and coordinate effectively to secure better prices and policies that safeguard their businesses.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Awingobit commended the market leaders, especially the Used Clothes Association, for their commitment to protecting the welfare of their members.

However, he raised concerns about poor communication between the various unions operating in the market and questioned whether they were affiliated with national bodies such as the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) or the Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG).

“I have realised there is a gap in communication between the various unions at Kantamanto. They must coordinate and engage with importers and exporters to negotiate prices. They cannot be selling the same products for different prices,” he said.

Awingobit urged traders to demand fairer prices from importers, stressing that mutual dependence would compel both parties to agree on favourable terms.

He also encouraged traders to strengthen their representation when seeking government intervention on national or security issues.

“When there are matters that require the attention of President Mahama or relevant ministries, they must present a strong, united front. My office is open to them, and I am ready to lead them in meetings with the Finance Minister, Trade Minister, or any relevant authorities to seek redress,” he said.

The Executive Secretary also expressed concern over what he described as unfair treatment by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and undue tax pressures from SSNIT, calling for unity to resist harassment and negotiate policies that support the market’s growth.

Galamsey: Bonsa River is gone – Tarkwa resident cries out [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-the-bonsa-river-is-gone-tarkwa-resident-cries-out-listen/ Thu, 18 Sep 2025 12:15:08 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580086 A resident of Tarkwa, Tony Nkrumah Boateng, has expressed deep frustration over the worsening galamsey crisis, warning that illegal mining activities have completely destroyed the Bonsa River, which serves as a vital water source for Tarkwa and its surrounding communities.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Boateng said residents have now reached a point of desperation.

“We have gotten to a stage where we cannot do anything about it again. The water we depend on, the Bonsa River is gone. It has been turned into a galamsey pit,” he lamented.

According to him, the situation is so dire that only households with boreholes can access water.

“For some of us who are not engineers, the layman’s view is that what we are seeing now is sand and rocks. The water that the Ghana Water Company is supposed to extract for treatment is no longer there,” he added.

Tony Nkrumah Boateng Tarkwa resident on galamsey crisis

Mr. Boateng noted that despite authorities, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), the Western Regional Minister, and the Member of Parliament for the area, being aware of the problem, little has been done to provide relief to residents.

“If you are looking for water and it is not there, then it means all you will see is sand. On the Bonsa River, when you drive from Takoradi towards Tarkwa, you will see a little water in town, but just 200 meters after that, the river is completely dry,” he explained.

He stressed that most parts of Tarkwa have been severely affected, leaving thousands without water.

“Those of us who depend on water in Tarkwa and its environs don’t have water. The authorities know the problem, but they haven’t told us when it will be resolved,” he complained.

Mr. Boateng questioned whether the country values water more than gold.

“We need to ask ourselves as a municipality: do we need water, or do we need gold? Because the illegal miners are exploiting the gold deposits, but authorities seem unconcerned. If this continues, it will become a big worry for us all,” he said.

He further revealed that residents are now forced to rely on private water tankers and boreholes since the Ghana Water Company has not provided any support.

“The Ghana Water Company has not taken responsibility to give us water. For instance, my water tank takes 700 litres, and to fill it—which lasts about three weeks—is very expensive and is draining our money,” he lamented.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Ebenezer Cobbinah, has renewed his commitment to protecting the Bonsa River from further pollution, while Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson has assured residents that the government will intensify its fight against illegal mining on water bodies to ensure households get safe drinking water.

Locals sometimes protect illegal miners, but… – Western Regional Minister [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/locals-sometimes-protect-illegal-miners-but-western-regional-minister-listen/ Thu, 18 Sep 2025 10:32:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580014 Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has bemoaned the role of some locals in protecting illegal miners, but insists the government remains resolute in its fight against galamsey, with special focus now on safeguarding vital water bodies.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the Minister said galamsey activities have now taken a toll on water sources in the region, worsening the water crisis in some communities.

“Galamsey is everywhere, and that is what makes the fight difficult. But we cannot also relent and say we won’t do anything about it. We are fighting with the strength and energy we have to ensure that the situation is brought under control,” he said.

Mr. Nelson explained that his outfit is now placing special attention on protecting water sources after reports of illegal diversions at the Bonsar Water Treatment Plant, which serves Tarkwa and its environs.

“When we visited the Bonsar Water Plant, we heard that some people had diverted water for other uses, including illegal mining. We had to clear the place because, as it stands, the Ghana Water Company is unable to refine the water for residents,” he revealed.

The Minister noted that while efforts in the past focused on clearing illegal miners from forest reserves, the current priority is water protection.

Western regional minister on galamsey

“For now, the forest reserves have been cleared, but the focus is on the water. Protecting our river bodies is paramount because without them, we cannot provide safe and clean water for our people,” he emphasized.

He also expressed frustration about the role some local residents play in undermining the fight against galamsey.

“The challenge is that people living around these communities don’t help. Instead, they tip off the illegal miners whenever security forces are on their way. In some cases, the residents even protect the miners. This does not help at all,” he lamented.

Mr. Nelson called on assemblies and communities to support the government’s efforts, adding that in the long term, consistent protection of river bodies will be key to resolving the crisis.

He further disclosed that the menace is not only perpetrated by Ghanaians but also by foreigners.

“Galamsey is not just Ghanaians. We have West African brothers and sisters also involved. Earlier this year, during an operation in a forest reserve, we found people of different nationalities mining illegally,” he said.

The Minister assured residents that the fight against illegal activities on waterways will continue, with the aim of ensuring that critical water installations remain safe and that households have access to wholesome water.

We must prioritise alternative livelihoods in galamsey fight – Tarkwa Nsuaem MCE [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/we-must-prioritise-alternative-livelihoods-in-galamsey-fight-tarkwa-nsuaem-mce-audio/ Thu, 18 Sep 2025 10:28:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580039 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Ebenezer Cobbinah, has called for a national consensus and a holistic approach to tackling illegal mining, stressing that punitive measures alone cannot end the menace.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Cobbinah emphasised that the fight against galamsey must prioritise alternative livelihoods for the thousands of Ghanaians engaged in small-scale mining.

“We must take a holistic decision as a nation towards this fight. These miners have families and must survive, so we must engage the large-scale mining companies to help take them off the waterbodies and regulate their activities,” he said.

Mr. Cobbinah outlined government’s efforts to address the situation through skills training and job creation initiatives.

“We have started apprenticeship programmes to support the youth. Just a few weeks ago, we undertook fruit juice processing training for Tarkwa-Nsuaem youth in partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, the Assembly, and the MP,” he disclosed.

He lauded President John Mahama’s cooperative mining initiative as a “step in the right direction” and urged stakeholders to rally behind its implementation to provide small-scale miners with a legitimate and sustainable source of income.

“Since the Mahama and NDC government came into power, we haven’t slept or shied away from galamsey. We are doing our best, but the miners keep going back. This means we must think outside the box. We can fight galamsey, but it will take time,” Mr. Cobbinah acknowledged.

President Mahama recently underscored the need for a long-term solution to the galamsey challenge, warning that the livelihoods of nearly four million Ghanaians are directly tied to small-scale mining.

He cautioned that banning galamsey without providing alternative jobs would worsen poverty and push illegal miners back to the sites.

Mr. Cobbinah echoed this concern, insisting that with sustained commitment, adequate logistics, and viable livelihood interventions, Tarkwa-Nsuaem and the rest of Ghana can overcome the fight against illegal mining.

Tarkwa-Nsuaem MCE leads anti-galamsey operation on Bonsa River [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/tarkwa-nsuaem-mce-leads-anti-galamsey-operation-on-bonsa-river-audio/ Thu, 18 Sep 2025 10:14:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2580012 The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Ebenezer Cobbinah, has renewed his commitment to the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, following a recent operation to protect the Bonsa River from further pollution.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Cobbinah revealed that intelligence reports indicated illegal miners were operating along the Bonsa River, prompting the assembly to deploy its 11-member “Blue Waterguards” taskforce to the site.

“We mobilised a team and moved in immediately because mining on our water bodies is a direct threat to our survival. If we sit back and watch, what will we drink?” he questioned.

The MCE explained that although no arrests were made as the miners fled upon seeing the taskforce, several machines used for the operations were seized and destroyed to prevent their return.

He also commended the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Sheikh Issah Salifu, for providing logistical support to sustain the taskforce’s operations, noting that government alone cannot win the fight without local collaboration.

“This menace didn’t start today. There have been a series of operations, even my predecessor took similar actions, but we must keep going until we end it,” Mr. Cobbinah stressed.

He further urged residents to rally behind the campaign to safeguard water bodies, warning that failure to act now would have dire consequences for future generations.

Yayra Koku assures NIA staff of improved welfare [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/yayra-koku-assures-nia-staff-of-improved-welfare-audio/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 13:14:47 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579568 The Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Yayra Koku Deku, has assured staff of the Authority that their welfare remains a top priority.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Deku disclosed that management had recently resolved issues concerning a 20 percent operational allowance for workers after a demonstration.

“Just last month, our staff demonstrated over their 20 percent operational allowance. I am happy to say that the matter has been resolved, and the allowance has been paid,” he said.

Mr. Deku explained that one of his major priorities is to ensure that the NIA becomes financially independent in the near future.

“Currently, we are under government subvention, but before I leave the NIA, my vision is that the Authority should be able to generate its own income and pay staff salaries,” he added.

Yayra Koku on NIA staff welfare

He also revealed that the Authority is in the process of migrating staff onto a new salary structure, with the Public Services Commission and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission already involved.

“Last month, I met with officials of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and I am hopeful the final report on staff migration will be ready soon,” he noted.

Mr. Deku stressed the importance of improving conditions of service, warning that poor remuneration could compromise the integrity of the NIA.

“When people working in such a sensitive organization are not well paid, it can lead to extortion and compromise of the system. That is why we are working hard to fix it,” he cautioned.

He further disclosed that part of the ongoing amendments will place the NIA permanently under the Ministry of Interior, which will allow the Authority to be recognized as a security institution.

“Once the migration is completed and we move permanently under the Interior Ministry, we will be pegged at the level of other state security institutions, and our workers will be paid well,” he assured.

640,000 Ghana Card backlogs cleared, instant registration now available – NIA boss [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/640000-ghana-card-backlogs-cleared-instant-registration-now-available-nia-boss-audio/ Wed, 17 Sep 2025 13:13:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579571 Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Wisdom Yayra Koku Deku, says significant progress has been made since he assumed office, with the backlog of unissued Ghana Cards now cleared.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Koku praised his predecessor, Professor Ken Attafuah, for laying some groundwork but stressed that a more technical background was needed for the role.

“I have always said that the NIA boss should have a technical background because it helps you focus on certain critical areas,” he said.

According to him, when he took over, only eight premium centres across the country were operational, and even those could not function effectively because there were no blank cards.

“In 2023, about 640,000 people had not received their cards even after registering, simply because there were no blank cards. At that time, government owed the private partner, so they refused to release the cards,” he explained.

Yayra Koku on NIA issues

Mr. Koku disclosed that he had to personally intervene to resolve the impasse.

“When I assumed office, I went to plead with them to release 700,000 cards. I assured them the debts would be settled. Thankfully, they listened and gave us the cards so we could clear the backlog,” he revealed.

He explained that the backlog printing started with Greater Accra, Volta, Oti, Northern, and Ashanti Regions.

However, to avoid delays, the NIA later distributed cards and additional blank cards to district offices nationwide to enable instant registration and issuance.

“As I speak today, if you go to any of our district offices, you will be registered and issued a Ghana Card instantly,” he announced.

Mr. Koku also clarified the fee structure for registration.

“If you are registering for the first time at our district offices, it is completely free. But if you go to any of our 15 premium centres, you will pay GH¢310,” he said.

Students’ protest came as a surprise – TaTU Director of Public Affairs [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/students-protest-came-as-a-surprise-tatu-director-of-public-affairs-audio/ Tue, 16 Sep 2025 16:52:53 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579210 The management of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) has described Tuesday’s student protest as a complete surprise, despite earlier engagements aimed at addressing student concerns.

The Director of Public Affairs, Osman Mubarak Abu, told Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen that while students had raised several issues, management had already begun taking steps to resolve them.

“We engaged them on Monday, but the meeting was not conclusive. Management invited them for another meeting, which they did not attend. Only for us to wake up the next morning to this demonstration,” Mr. Abu explained.

Efforts to hold an emergency follow-up meeting with the students were unsuccessful, as they declined the invitation. To prevent property damage and restore order, police were called to the campus.

Mr. Abu noted that the grievances raised by students included school fee increases and complaints against the Vice-Chancellor, Finance Director, and some faculty members.

“It is unfortunate this chaos happened, but we are committed to finding amicable solutions. There is a reason we are university staff; without students, we have no business being here,” he stressed.

The protest, jointly organized by the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), was initially intended to highlight deteriorating campus facilities and delays in the disbursement of funds.

Scores of students sustained injuries when the peaceful demonstration turned chaotic following a confrontation with police.

Mr. Osman assured that management is currently holding a crisis meeting to expedite decisions that will restore normalcy at the university.

Sack MMDCEs over galamsey – Ken Ashigbey to Mahama [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/sack-mmdces-over-galamsey-ken-ashigbey-to-mahama-audio/ Tue, 16 Sep 2025 12:43:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579101 Convener of the Coalition Against Galamsey, Ghana, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to immediately sack Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in areas where illegal mining continues to thrive.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Ashigbey said the fight against galamsey is not progressing as it should and requires urgent action.

“We believe it is not only us talking about it—churches are also speaking about it. We all have to come on board to work on it. But if galamsey is still ongoing in areas like Tarkwa, Obuasi, Prestea, then the DCEs and MCEs there must be sacked,” he insisted.

He explained that MMDCEs serve as chairpersons of the mining committees in their districts and therefore cannot remain in office if illegal mining persists under their watch.

“After sacking them, the government can investigate further to find out if they are part of the activities. If they are, then deal with them, because clearly, they are not helping matters,” Dr. Ashigbey added.

Ken Ashigbey on galamsey crisis

He reminded that President Mahama himself has described galamsey as a national emergency, yet state institutions have been slow to act decisively.

Dr. Ashigbey further stressed the urgency by referencing the destruction of forest reserves and water bodies, despite ongoing reclamation efforts.

“Article 39 of the Constitution provides clear justification for a national emergency. The scale of environmental damage we are witnessing meets those conditions,” he argued.

His remarks echo growing calls from civil society, faith-based groups, and environmental advocates for stronger government action against galamsey, which continues to devastate rivers, forests, and farmlands across the country.

Galamsey: It is time for another protest walk – Ken Ashigbey to Catholic Church https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-it-is-time-for-another-protest-walk-ken-ashigbey-to-catholic-church/ Tue, 16 Sep 2025 12:27:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579081 Convener for the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Dr. Kenneth Ashigbey, has renewed calls for a nationwide prayer walk by the Catholic Church to rally citizens against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

His appeal comes a year after a similar event drew thousands of participants across the country.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Ashigbey urged the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference to once again mobilise its 20 dioceses for a coordinated march in October, describing the exercise as both a spiritual and civic duty.

“Last year’s prayer walk brought together people from all political divides. It is time again to hit the streets in prayer and call on God to intervene. We must do what we can as a people and show that sovereignty lies with us,” he said.

He noted that if this year’s event goes ahead, it will again be accompanied by petitions to President John Mahama and regional ministers, demanding stronger action against galamsey.

Dr. Ashigbey further appealed to other faith leaders, including the National Chief Imam, the Christian Council, and the Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, to join forces for a united national front.

“Over 20 million people don’t have water to drink. Almost a million peasant farmers have lost their farms in the Ashanti Region. This is no longer a partisan issue; we must stand together and support the President in the fight,” he stressed.

Last year’s prayer walk, spearheaded by the Catholic Church, drew large crowds in several regions and featured prayer sessions, scripture readings, and placards demanding action on illegal mining.

Dr. Ashigbey believes a renewed march this October would send a strong signal that citizens remain resolute and will not relent until the menace is stopped.

Galamsey fight: Appiah-Kubi urges ‘war-time’ approach and presidential commitment https://www.adomonline.com/galamsey-fight-appiah-kubi-urges-war-time-approach-and-presidential-commitment/ Tue, 16 Sep 2025 10:50:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2579024 Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has called for a more aggressive and coordinated approach to tackling illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The legal practitioner warned that the menace poses an existential threat to Ghana’s environment and future.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Appiah-Kubi recounted his personal experience in combating galamsey during his tenure as MP, stressing that political will at the highest level is critical to ending the practice.

“When the NPP was in power, I spoke against our commitment to fight galamsey. Even in my constituency, I did not allow galamsey operations. All those who made an attempt were arrested and handed over to the police,” he said, crediting traditional leaders such as Nana Akuoko Sarpong for supporting his efforts.

He emphasized that fighting galamsey requires courage and unwavering commitment, even in the face of intimidation and interference.

“I never got afraid and stood my grounds to stop the menace, even if it meant putting my life on the line. When Akufo-Addo declared he would put his presidency on the line, it was just words. True commitment must trickle down to those mandated to fight,” he argued.

Mr. Appiah-Kubi urged President John Mahama to empower the security agencies with full backing to crush illegal mining operations.

“If the President is committed, only one battalion can fight them. This is like a war situation; if the illegal miners want to threaten our survival, we must defeat them before they defeat us,” he stressed.

He further called for a dedicated military battalion to be deployed and given the authority to act decisively, with full protection from the presidency for those enforcing the law.

According to him, without strong leadership and full presidential backing, the efforts of security agencies and taskforces will be undermined, giving galamsey operators the freedom to destroy the environment with impunity.

Former Deputy National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Nixon Biney, has dismissed viral reports claiming he has been appointed Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday, Biney expressed surprise at a circulating social media flier announcing his alleged appointment, stressing that he had not received any official communication from government.

“Minister of Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, was the first person to draw my attention to the viral post. I was surprised because if it were true, I believe I would have been engaged to confirm that I am available and ready to deliver on the mandate,” he said.

Biney clarified that he is currently focused on his private business but remains open to serving in a role where he can make a meaningful impact.

“It is not just about the appointment but how you can positively impact. Wherever I am appointed, it shouldn’t be a minus but a plus. Appointees must be impactful and support President Mahama’s vision and agenda over the next four years,” he stressed.

He added that he has held discussions with President Mahama and the First Lady on areas where he can contribute, emphasizing that any future role must align with his logistics expertise and desire to support national development.

Biney concluded by urging Ghanaians to focus on adding value rather than merely occupying positions, warning: “Even if we bring Jesus Christ, things will not be the same” without a mindset of impact.

Why NAIMOS, other institutions are unable to fight galamsey – Erastus Asare reveals [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/why-naimos-other-institutions-are-unable-to-fight-galamsey-erastus-asare-reveals-audio/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 15:14:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2578734 Environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor has attributed the limited success of the National Alternative Illegal Mining Operations Strategy (NAIMOS) in tackling galamsey, particularly in forest reserves, to political interference.

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, Erastus claimed that some New Democratic Congress (NDC) members at constituency, branch, and district levels are allowing illegal mining to continue in forest reserves.

“When this happens, NAIMOS is unable to stop the activities. I can tell you on authority that some big men even claim ownership of these reserves and permit illegal mining,” he said.

He noted that the Inspector-General of Police’s (IGP) taskforce has been the only effective force in seizing excavators and arresting offenders.

“It’s sad that now they are being asked to withdraw their services, because there is no effective arrangement to protect the gains already made,” Erastus said.

Erastus on Forest reserves

He added that some forest reserves in the Ashanti Region, where excavators were seized, have already seen illegal miners return.

“Even some chiefs in those areas are allowing people to mine illegally,” he claimed.

Erastus stressed the need for a more structured approach.

“We cannot rule a country like this. If we want to mine in forest reserves, let us create laws, allow bidding, issue licenses, and do it properly. Allowing people to mine illegally will never help us.”

Asked if he had raised the issue with the sector minister, he confirmed that he was aware of the situation.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama, in a recent media encounter, stated that he was exploring all available options in the fight against galamsey before considering the declaration of a state of emergency.

Erastus Asare Donkor, Ama Mawusi clash over galamsey  [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/erastus-asare-donkor-ama-mawusi-clash-over-galamsey-listen/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 13:30:59 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2578712 Award-winning environmental journalist Erastus Asare Donkor and Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, Director of Communications at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, clashed on air during a heated discussion on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Erastus on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem criticised what he described as delays in enforcement, questioning why the police, who are responsible for upholding the law, are not acting swiftly on the ground.

“It’s like telling us NAIMOS has worked on water bodies, and I accept that, but much of the work is being reversed. There are forest reserves retrieved from illegal miners, and now people are back doing galamsey,” he said.

He added that many excavators seized from illegal miners are reportedly being returned.

Ama Mawusi interjected, denying the claims. “That is not true. The excavators seized are still in custody and have not been given out,” she said.

Erastus challenged her, saying, “You are in Accra making allegations without going to the field. You don’t know what the IGP men are doing in the forests, and it’s unfair to accuse them of extortion.”

Ama Mawusi clashes with Erastus Asare Donkor

Mawusi responded, “The National Alternative Illegal Mining Operations Strategy (NAIMOS) includes the Ghana Police Service, but not all enforcement can be done by police or soldiers alone. That’s why we coordinate under one umbrella, to ensure a more effective approach. There were logistical challenges causing some delays, but these have been resolved, and action will resume in the coming days.”

She added that the Ministry appreciates Erastus’s work and that her statements reflect what she knows from monitoring the situation.

“Since the beginning of the year, we have done everything we could regarding forest reserves. Yes, some illegal mining persists, but it does not mean that the Blue Water Guard is not working—results are showing progress. It is unfair to compare eight months of the current administration to eight years of the previous government and claim nothing is being done,” Mawusi said.

The exchange highlights rising public concern over the slow pace of government action against galamsey, with local communities continuing to suffer the consequences of environmental destruction.

How has gov’t failed in galamsey fight? Ama Mawusi questions critics [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/how-has-govt-failed-in-galamsey-fight-ama-mawusi-questions-critics-audio/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 12:29:37 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2578662 Ama Mawusi, Director of Communications at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, has dismissed claims that the government has failed in its fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, she said the National Alternative Illegal Mining Operations Strategy (NAIMOS) continues to make progress, even if results take time.

“We have not failed when it comes to the fight against galamsey. Once NAIMOS receives information, they deploy personnel to investigate and design a strategy to combat it. The team was supposed to go last week but faced a challenge. They have now been redeployed and are set to act,” she explained.

However, Environmental Journalist Erastus Asare Donkor expressed disagreement on the same show. He criticised what he described as bureaucratic delays that undermine field operations.

“If we have a plan, the taskforce should be able to respond quickly when there is a problem. Instead, we rely on a process that takes days or weeks to act. Every single day spent by illegal miners in forest reserves brings devastation we cannot reverse,” he said, warning that delayed action exacerbates deforestation and land degradation.

Mr. Asare added that despite consistently sharing reports with authorities, including the Ahwiafutu situation he posted about two weeks ago, no concrete action has been taken.

“This is taking forever. The more we delay, the more devastation is caused,” he stressed.

The remarks come amid growing concerns over the pace of government’s response to illegal mining, with communities continuing to bear the brunt of its impact.

Portion of Tarkwa market caves in; exposes deadly galamsey threat [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/portion-of-tarkwa-market-caves-in-exposes-deadly-galamsey-threat-audio/ Mon, 15 Sep 2025 10:27:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2578573 Traders at the Tarkwa Women’s Market in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region are living in fear after part of the market land caved in, following a blast suspected to be linked to illegal mining at an abandoned mine shaft belt.

Preliminary findings suggest the collapse was triggered by galamsey operations along the old shaft that runs through sections of the municipality.

Former Head of Public Affairs at the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Fiifi Boafo, confirmed the development in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

He noted that the incident, which occurred on the night of September 8, could have resulted in significant casualties if traders had been present.

Describing the situation as alarming, Mr. Boafo urged authorities to urgently halt the illegal mining activities that are destabilizing the earth’s structure.

He recounted a trader’s account that some individuals were still trapped in the pit the morning after the cave-in.

He further revealed that personnel from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) visited the scene but only instructed miners to refill the area without conducting a thorough safety assessment.

He criticised the response, questioning NADMO’s failure to properly evaluate the extent of the damage and put measures in place to prevent further disasters.

“A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology, Professor Mireku Gyimah, who was Ghana’s first Mining Professor, has warned that if the digging continues unchecked, the entire Tarkwa township risks caving in one day,” Mr. Boafo cautioned.

This is not why we voted for NDC; I can’t be part of this gov’t – Martin Kpebu on Abronye [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/this-is-not-why-we-voted-for-ndc-i-cant-be-part-of-this-govt-martin-kpebu-on-abronye-audio/ Fri, 12 Sep 2025 19:04:36 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577921 Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly criticised the continued detention of Bono Regional NPP Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, following his second remand by the Accra Circuit Court on Friday, September 12, 2025.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Kpebu described the decision to keep Abronye in police custody for two consecutive weeks over a misdemeanour charge as unlawful and contrary to the principles of justice Ghanaians expect.

“We must let the Attorney-General and IGP Yohuno know that this is not lawful. We didn’t vote for the NDC for this type of governance, and I cannot be part of this type of government,” he said.

Kpebu argued that if the state considers Abronye’s comments offensive, the case should proceed in court while granting him bail.

“If they don’t want to forgive him, they can grant him bail as the case proceeds to the end. When the verdict comes and it is too much, then we talk about it,” he added.

He warned that denying bail in a misdemeanor case sets a dangerous precedent.

“If in a misdemeanor case Abronye cannot secure bail, then it means the verdict on my Kpebu number 2 case in 2016 is void and useless. As citizens, we must get up and resist this, or else it will lead to tyranny,” he cautioned.

Kpebu also called on the police to return to court on Monday to signal the completion of their investigations, paving the way for bail. Should they fail, he urged Abronye’s legal team to seek redress at the Human Rights Court.

“This is wrong and a sad day for our democracy. We must all rally support and speak against this because we cannot retrogress as a nation,” he concluded.

Abronye was first remanded on September 10, following his arrest on Monday, September 8, over what police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace.”

Disgrace to democracy – Nana Akomea on Abronye’s arrest [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/disgrace-to-democracy-nana-akomea-on-abronyes-arrest-listen/ Fri, 12 Sep 2025 16:22:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577936 A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has criticised the government over what he described as the growing trend of targeting opposition members with arrests and harsh bail conditions.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Nana Akomea said the actions of the government are “a disgrace to democracy.”

“How they are going about it is not good. It’s disgusting, and we have to speak against it. Even if someone has committed a crime, that is not the problem. The issue is the way you handle it as if we don’t have laws,” he said.

He accused the government of using state institutions to harass members of the NPP.

“Ever since this government came to power, they have been targeting our party people and causing unnecessary drama. What we have is democracy and peace, but the actions of this government are becoming too much and a disgrace to democracy,” he stressed.

AKOMEA ON ABRONYE ARREST

Nana Akomea added that it was wrong for government officials to justify their actions by pointing to similar incidents under past administrations.

“I won’t equalise whether the NPP did the same when we were in government or not. The point is, this is very bad and should not be entertained. If you have evidence, take the person to court and provide your evidence. That’s how democracy works,” he said.

He also raised concerns about the bail conditions often imposed on accused persons, calling for a review.

“The bail conditions in this country must be looked at again. They are not good, and the regulations must be clearly defined so that they don’t become a tool for abuse,” he argued.

Citing an example, he recalled the arrest of NPP stalwart Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, where “the bail condition was very huge and unfair.”

His comments come after the Accra Circuit Court remanded the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, into prison custody on charges of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace and publication of false news.

The complainant in the case is the Ghana Police Service. Abronye is expected to reappear in court on September 19, 2025.

Martin Kpebu criticises Abronye’s continued detention [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/martin-kpebu-criticises-abronyes-continued-detention-listen/ Fri, 12 Sep 2025 16:01:30 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577927 Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has criticised the continued detention of Bono Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, describing it as disproportionate to the nature of the charges against him.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen following the Accra Circuit Court’s decision to remand Abronye again on Friday, September 12, 2025, Mr. Kpebu emphasised that the offence—offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace—is a misdemeanour that does not warrant prolonged custody.

“In our laws, this is one of the lowest crimes. The maximum punishment is usually a fine, with the highest custodial sentence being three years. With such a charge, he should not be in custody for two weeks,” Kpebu stated.

He highlighted that under Section 96 of Ghana’s Criminal Procedure laws, judges must consider factors such as an accused person’s family ties, business interests, and likelihood to abscond before deciding on pre-trial detention.

“This is not really about the comments Abronye made, but about the law on detention for misdemeanours. We cannot let this continue, or else we will have no society,” he stressed.

Kpebu suggested that the police could return to court on Monday to update the judge on the progress of their investigations, which could pave the way for granting bail.

He compared Abronye’s situation to that of former NDC Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho, who was detained in 2018 for alleged treasonable comments.

“When the same thing was done to Koku Anyidoho, I condemned it, and today I’m taking the same position,” he said, vowing to resist what he described as unfair pre-trial punishment.

Appiah Stadium threatened and hinted me about my arrest – Kofi Akpaloo [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/appiah-stadium-threatened-and-hinted-me-about-my-arrest-kofi-akpaloo-listen/ Fri, 12 Sep 2025 10:39:05 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577704 Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has revealed that he was tipped off about his arrest days before it happened.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Akpaloo claimed that self-styled activist and staunch NDC supporter Appiah Stadium called to inform him that he would be arrested after the burial of the helicopter crash victims.

“Appiah Stadium called me and said that after the helicopter crash victims were buried, EOCO will come and arrest me, so I should prepare. So I packed my things, some attire that could take me for about a week. When EOCO officials came to pick me up, they even asked why I had a bag, and I told them I had already prepared,” Mr. Akpaloo said.

He added that he could not confirm how Appiah Stadium obtained the information, but insisted that the activist had even threatened him over his comments on the helicopter crash. “I cannot lie about this,” he stressed.

Mr. Akpaloo also spoke about his treatment while in custody, describing EOCO officers as professional and respectful.

“If I say the officers treated me badly, then I will be lying. They treated me well; they never manhandled me. In fact, on our way to the Accra office, they even stopped at a restaurant for us to eat. I was shocked because I had the perception that I would be treated harshly,” he said.

Kofi Akpaloo on EOCO arrest

According to him, he has recently been based in Kumasi due to his wife’s business there.

Asked if he had learned any lessons from the experience, Akpaloo replied, “I am still learning.”

Mr. Akpaloo was arrested on September 3, 2025, over alleged financial crimes, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, dissipation of public funds, and money laundering.

Although he was granted bail earlier with a GH¢10 million bond and two sureties, he struggled to meet the conditions and remained in custody until Thursday, September 11, 2025.

Kofi Akpaloo defends his integrity amidst EOCO’s probe [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/kofi-akpaloo-defends-his-integrity-amidst-eocos-probe-audio/ Fri, 12 Sep 2025 10:26:28 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577698 Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has dismissed allegations of financial crimes against him, describing the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) probe as politically motivated and an attempt to tarnish his image.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Akpaloo confirmed that he was granted a GH¢10 million bail but was unable to meet the surety requirements, which kept him in detention last week.

He disclosed that EOCO officials escorted him to Ayomsuo at dawn on Monday to inspect a feeder road project he executed under one of his contracts.

“We toured the entire stretch from Kyenkyehene Junction through Kutuase and back to Kumaho. Even the EOCO officials were impressed because the local people gave testimony that the road was well constructed,” he recounted.

Akpaloo stressed that the project, carried out four years ago, was fully funded with his own resources and not government funds.

“The government has not paid me in full. The little money I received, I used to buy chippings and start the first coat of coaltar. I haven’t been able to buy the bitumen yet because I haven’t been paid. How can they accuse me of causing financial loss to the state?” he questioned.

The LPG leader further stated that no formal charges have been filed against him, insisting that the ongoing investigations into alleged money laundering, forgery, and misapplication of funds are politically driven.

“I have provided all the necessary information. Even the feeder road officers and assembly members can testify that I did the work and did it well. My arrest and the entire probe is just to please their grassroots,” he alleged.

He also revealed that he had started building a school in Kutuase to support children who travel long distances for education, but the project stalled due to lack of funds.

Mr. Akpaloo was released from custody on Thursday, September 11, 2025, following his arrest on September 3. EOCO is yet to issue a formal statement on the outcome of its investigations.

Ashanti Regional Minister to visit Mpatuam after deadly clashes [Audio] https://www.adomonline.com/ashanti-regional-minister-to-visit-mpatuam-after-deadly-clashes-audio/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 13:04:38 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577291 Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has announced plans to visit Mpatuam in the Amansie West District after violent clashes between residents and military officers claimed two lives, including that of an Assembly Member.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Dr. Amoakohene described the incident as “very regrettable” and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

“This should never have happened. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims, and I want to assure them that investigations are ongoing to unravel what really happened,” he said.

The Minister cautioned the public to remain calm while the matter is being addressed.

“When incidents like this occur, we must resist the temptation to act irrationally because it only worsens the situation. We need to engage the community well and also engage Asanko Mining Company to find lasting solutions,” he stressed.

Dr. Amoakohene noted that tensions between mining companies and host communities are becoming a recurring issue in areas where large-scale mining operations exist.

He assured that security agencies are maintaining close surveillance in Mpatuam to ensure safety and prevent further disturbances.

ASHANTI MINISTER ON ASANKO CHAOS

“So far, the community and the families are still hurt, but we are determined to resolve this matter. The community needs healing, and that is our priority,” he added.

The Minister revealed that, pending security clearance, he will visit the community to sympathise with the families of the victims and hold discussions with traditional leaders, residents, and the mining company.

“Today or tomorrow, I will be in Mpatuam to see the extent of the damage and engage all parties involved. We need to bridge the gap and bring peace so that the mining community can also work in peace,” he explained.

The clashes, which occurred on Monday and Tuesday, erupted when military personnel confronted residents who were allegedly attempting to invade one of Asanko Gold’s mining concessions. The exact trigger of the confrontation, however, remains under investigation.

Amansie West DCE details how military clashes left two dead in Mpatuam [Listen] https://www.adomonline.com/amansie-west-dce-details-how-military-clashes-left-two-dead-in-mpatuam-listen/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 13:03:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577286 The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Amansie West, Maurice Manu, has provided clarity on the recent violent clashes between residents and military personnel in Mpatuam, Ashanti Region, which left two people dead, including an Assembly Member.

Speaking in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr. Manu said the community had been largely peaceful until the recent chaos.

He attributed the tensions to activities at the Asanko Gold mining site.

“The source of the issue is the Asanko mining concession. Last month, Asanko made it clear to us that the government had given them the green light to operate, so we are aware that they are working there,” Manu said.

He explained that the Assembly Member was shot while trying to calm the situation.

“When I got to the scene, the military told me they were only firing warning shots to disperse the crowd. Unfortunately, one soldier’s gun discharged downwards, and it appears the Assembly Member was hit,” he noted.

Mr. Manu added that although initial reports suggested the victim was only shocked by the warning shots, hospital examinations confirmed it was indeed a gunshot wound.

He also reassured that calm has now returned to the area.

“For now, the situation is under control. People who fled have returned, and the soldiers are stationed at the Asanko camp to protect the site,” he said.

As the District Security Committee (DISEC) chairman, Manu stressed that ongoing engagement with Asanko and the local community remains a priority.

“We are still working closely with Asanko and the residents to ensure lasting peace in the community,” he added.

The clashes occurred on Monday and Tuesday when military personnel confronted residents allegedly attempting to invade one of Asanko Gold’s mining concessions, though the exact trigger of the confrontation remains under investigation.

Mpatuam Shooting: Youth’s violence condemnable but Asanko Mines cannot escape blame – Otumfuo Brempong https://www.adomonline.com/mpatuam-shooting-youths-violence-condemnable-but-asanko-mines-cannot-escape-blame-otumfuo-brempong/ Thu, 11 Sep 2025 12:26:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2577366 Otumfuo Brempong, the chief of Tetrem in the Ashanti Region, Nana Akwasi Oko II, has held Asanko Mine partly responsible for the tensions that led to the death of the Aboabo Assembly Member, while also condemning the youth for resorting to violence and destruction.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Nana Akwasi Oko II explained that the unrest began when some youth from Mpatuam dumped the body of a man at the Asanko Mine camp, accusing soldiers guarding the concession of killing him during an anti-galamsey operation.

“I suggested that the body be taken to the hospital for an autopsy and even contacted the Nkawie commander to transport it to Afari Hospital. But while arrangements were being made, a large crowd from Mpatuam approached the mine, and soldiers blocked them from entering,” the chief recounted.

He confirmed that the late assemblyman was with the Tetrem Assemblyman in an attempt to calm the crowd when soldiers fired warning shots.

“Shortly after, the assemblyman was brought to the camp with gunshot wounds. He was only there to ensure calm,” the chief explained.

News of his death triggered outrage, with some youth storming the mine and setting properties ablaze. Nana Akwasi Oko II condemned the reaction, stressing that it was unacceptable.

“Even though the death is troubling, the youth should not have taken the law into their own hands to cause mayhem and destruction,” he said.

The chief, however, maintained that Asanko Mine could not be absolved of blame.

“These soldiers have been brutalizing residents. If they have been lawfully deployed, there must still be professionalism. Asanko must find a middle ground with the community,” he insisted.

Nana Akwasi Oko II also highlighted the frustrations of unemployed youth, revealing that out of more than 500 young men in his community, only five are employed by Asanko Mine.

“This disconnect fuels resentment, but violence cannot be the answer,” he cautioned.

Looking ahead, the chief said traditional authorities will engage all parties involved to restore calm and prevent a recurrence.

“This is a regrettable incident, but we must use it as a turning point to build dialogue and ensure peace,” he stated.

Asanko Mine has operated in the Amansie West District for years with largely peaceful relations with its host communities. However, the recent clashes have reignited debates over the presence of armed soldiers at mine sites, youth unemployment in mining areas, and the handling of security interventions.

The government is facing pressure to probe the shooting and restore calm, as fear has forced many men to flee the town, leaving economic activities at a standstill.
