Some students reportedly pelted stones at the residence of the senior housemistress in a violent outburst after she allegedly prevented them from cheating.

Reports by Accra-based Citi News suggest the incident stemmed from a confrontation between the housemistress and a candidate during the Christian Religious Studies (CRS) paper on Friday, September 5.

According to school authorities, the student was stopped for allegedly attempting to cheat, after which he verbally abused the housemistress. He was, however, later made to apologise and taken through counselling.

But on the night of Sunday, September 7, a group of students allegedly launched an attack on the housemistress’s residence, hurling stones and causing panic on campus.

Police were called in to restore calm, and investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators.

Headmistress Rev. Agnes Gaisie stressed that the situation is under control and assured parents and stakeholders that the ongoing examinations are continuing without disruption.

The development comes as the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of 16 people nationwide for examination malpractice in the ongoing exercise.

Two remanded over Homowo shooting at Omanjor https://www.adomonline.com/two-remanded-over-homowo-shooting-at-omanjor/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 07:57:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2576046 Two persons arrested in connection with a violent clash during the Homowo Festival at Omanjor in Accra have been arraigned before the Adabraka District Court.

The accused — Christian Saka Ahianyevi, 35, a security guard, and Newton Allotey, 26, a dispatch rider — have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime to wit murder, rioting with weapons, and murder.

They are said to have acted with about 30 others who are currently on the run.

The court, presided over by Mrs Abena Owusu Omenyo, did not take their pleas due to the nature of the charges and remanded them into lawful custody to reappear on September 29, 2025.

Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, prosecuting, explained that the pleas were deferred because murder was involved and investigations were still ongoing. He said efforts were underway to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Narrating the facts, the prosecution said the incident occurred on August 30, 2025, during the annual Homowo Festival of the chiefs and people of Omanjor and surrounding communities.

The celebration included a procession and the traditional sprinkling of Kpokpoi on the streets. However, the accused persons and their accomplices allegedly blocked the procession near the “Police land” area, claiming the Omanjor chief and his people had trespassed on their land.

A misunderstanding reportedly escalated into gunfire, leading to the deaths of Abubakar Ramadan Sarbahaka Nii Kwashiebu, Joseph Shaibu Dodoo, and Theophilus Nii Amu Kwadjan.

Several others sustained injuries, including Frederick Lartey (alias Nii Obrafour), Samuel Adjei, and Nathaniel Doku. Some of the victims are still receiving treatment at the Ridge and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospitals, while others have been treated and discharged.

The prosecution further told the court that intelligence led to the arrest of the accused the following day. Christian was found in possession of a locally manufactured pistol and a machete, while 18 empty cartridges were retrieved from Newton’s room.

Investigations are ongoing.

Gbenyiri: Your enemies are poverty and bad roads, not yourselves – Wa West MP to factions https://www.adomonline.com/gbenyiri-your-enemies-are-poverty-and-bad-roads-not-yourselves-wa-west-mp-to-factions/ Mon, 08 Sep 2025 07:18:12 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2576008 The Wa West MP, Peter Lanchene Toobu, has urged the feuding factions in the Gbenyiri conflict to recognise that their true enemies are not each other but poverty, bad roads, and underdevelopment.

Addressing some 48,000 displaced people, mostly women and children, Mr. Toobu, who is the Deputy Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, described war as a destructive force that derails peace and development.

He stressed that his mission as a natural mediator was to appeal to both factions, particularly chiefs, to embrace peace for the sake of their communities.

“Peace in Sawla-Tuna-Kalba is all we are praying for, and the chiefs have assured us that they are willing to toe the path of peace,” he said.

He also cautioned the youth against using social media to fuel conflict.

“If you have sons and daughters who are educated and active on social media, tell them to use that power to call for peace, not war. War is destructive.

“As you sit here, you have become internally displaced persons in your own country, and other people are feeding you while your farms remain abandoned.”

Mr. Toobu lamented the devastation of the conflict, noting that farmlands filled with maize and groundnuts had been deserted.

“I tell you today that your real enemies are not yourselves, but poverty, bad roads, and underdevelopment. This cannot be life. You cannot be internally displaced persons in your own country,” he said.

He called on all stakeholders to act swiftly to end the conflict.

“Let’s ensure that we bring peace so that these children don’t suffer unduly, and sisters and mothers will not suffer unduly. The time to act is now. Peace is what we are calling for.”

The MP was accompanied by the Dagaaba Chief of the Savannah Region, Naa Maxwell Kuubasagra, and executive members of the Dagaaba Youth Association in the region.

Okada rider found dead with slit throat at Kwabenya https://www.adomonline.com/okada-rider-found-dead-with-slit-throat-at-kwabenya/ Sun, 07 Sep 2025 07:57:35 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575832 A wave of fear has gripped the Kwabenya Comet community in Accra following the gruesome murder of an Okada rider, the second such incident in just a few months.

The victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was found with his throat slit in what residents fear is becoming a disturbing pattern of targeted killings. The discovery has intensified anxiety in a community still reeling from a similar incident earlier this year.

The latest murder mirrors the brutal killing of Immigration Officer Stephen Amoah, who was slain under nearly identical circumstances in the same area.

Residents say the repeated acts of violence have left them living in constant fear while raising serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures in the neighbourhood.

So far, no arrests have been made, but the Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into the case.

With its rapid urbanisation and high population density, Kwabenya presents unique challenges for law enforcement, as criminal activities often go undetected in its maze of unlit streets and densely packed settlements.

The recent murders have sparked renewed public calls for urgent police intervention to restore calm and bring an end to what locals describe as a reign of terror in their community.

Three Nigerians jailed for vehicle theft in Kumasi https://www.adomonline.com/three-nigerians-jailed-for-vehicle-theft-in-kumasi/ Sat, 06 Sep 2025 20:24:25 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575717 Three Nigerian nationals have been jailed for 10 years for their role in a series of vehicle thefts across the Kumasi Metropolis.

The convicts Francis Friday, Linus Agwazie, and Russell Ekenze were apprehended by officers from the Suame Divisional Police Command on June 20, 2025, during targeted operations against car theft syndicates.

On July 22, 2025, they appeared before the Atasemanso Circuit Court, where Russell Ekenze pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour (IHL).

His accomplices, Friday and Agwazie, pleaded not guilty, resulting in a full trial.

However, Circuit Court 3, on July 23, found them guilty on two counts each, sentencing them to 8 years each (concurrent).

On the same day, Circuit Court 1 also handed down an additional 20-year concurrent sentence to all three convicts for related offences.

In a further ruling on July 24, Circuit Court 2 convicted Ekenze again, adding another 10-year concurrent sentence.

The three are currently serving their terms at the Kumasi Central Prison.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, through the Suame Divisional Police, described the convictions as a major step in dismantling organized and cross-border criminal networks.

The Command further encouraged residents to continue sharing intelligence and reporting suspicious activities to aid crime prevention.

Man allegedly ‘chews’ off wife’s ear in a scuffle in Dambai https://www.adomonline.com/man-allegedly-chews-off-wifes-ear-in-a-scuffle-in-dambai/ Sat, 06 Sep 2025 16:15:10 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575670 A man known as Emmanuel Addai has allegedly “chewed” the wife’s ear in a disturbing incident of domestic violence.

The incident occurred at “Wonkayaw,” a community in Dambai Township of the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.

Madam Cecilia Fordjour, the 46-year-old wife, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that she had her ear bitten off by her husband during a violent altercation.

According to Madam Fordjour, the incident happened after she had prepared food for the family and was with the children when her husband returned from a funeral in the area.

She alleged that without any provocation, her husband demanded she leave the house immediately, just as she was arranging to serve him food.

According to her, the situation escalated, and her husband allegedly attacked her, biting off her ear, among other assaults.

Madam Fordjour recounted that when they arrived at a private health facility (KOPAH Clinic) with the severed ear, medical officials informed them that reattachment was unlikely due to the prolonged delay in the house, and the ear could no longer be saved.

The incident has been reported to the Krachi East Police Command, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the truth.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Al-hassan Abdu-Rzak, Divisional Crime Officer of Dambai Command, confirmed the incident to the GNA.

ASP Abdul-Razak said the woman initially lodged a complaint at the station, and her husband also followed suit, alleging he was beaten, and medical forms were issued to both individuals.

He said investigations into the matter would commence once both parties have been discharged from the hospital.

According to ASP Abdul-Razak, the Police would then review the medical reports and gather further evidence to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Medical and Dental Council announces arrest of 4 quack practitioners https://www.adomonline.com/medical-and-dental-council-announces-arrest-of-4-quack-practitioners/ Fri, 05 Sep 2025 14:36:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2575325 The Medical and Dental Council of Ghana (MDC) has raised concerns over the growing menace of quackery, describing it as one of the major threats to the country’s medical profession.

Data from the Council indicates that between 2024 and the third quarter of 2025, four individuals were arrested for practising medicine without a licence.

The suspects — Kate Baidoo of Osag Medical Centre (Nsakena), Ebenezer Koomson of E & E Medical Centre (Gomoa Afransi), Innocent Tagbovi of Mighty Clinic (Madina), and Ebenezer Sarpong of Goodcare Medical Centre (Swalaba Bukom) — were apprehended during undercover operations conducted between September 2024 and August 2025.

Several others are currently under investigation, with cases expected to be prosecuted in court.

The Council also uncovered incidents of forged academic certificates submitted by individuals seeking authorisation to practise as medical professionals in Ghana.

Speaking at a press briefing, Registrar of the Council, Dr. Divine Ndonbi Banyubala, said the problem was widespread and cut across different regions and health-related fields. He assured the public that the Council is committed to tackling the menace.

To help restore confidence, Dr. Banyubala announced that the MDC is collaborating with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to roll out a practitioner name tag and stamp policy by 2026.

The system will require healthcare providers to display official identification, including their names, photographs, and professional designations.

“Detecting quackery is very difficult,” he explained. “That is why we are working with the NHIA to ensure that any professional in a healthcare setting is properly tagged. The aim is to reduce patient confusion, since not everyone in a hospital environment is a medical doctor.”

The MDC believes the initiative will not only curb quack practices but also protect patients’ safety and enhance trust in Ghana’s healthcare system.

Appearing before an Adenta Circuit Court, Priscilla Duah Birago, a 29-year-old National Service Person, and Charity Dede Tetteh, 29, a beautician, were admitted to bail in the sum of GHC100,000 each with two sureties.

According to the court, one of the sureties should be justified with any property.

Tetteh and Birago have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime with offensive conduct and offensive conduct to the breach of peace.

They are alleged to have conspired to make offensive statements, to wit, “We would have been happier if the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, was involved in the helicopter crash and dwarves had eaten him up. A lot of people are dying under his tenure of office.”

The court, presided over by Mrs Angela Attache, admonished the accused persons to stay out of trouble in relation to the matter before the court, as the matter was a sensitive one.

A team of three lawyers, led by Enoch Anhwere Afoakwa, said they will advise the accused persons.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, informed the court that the police had yet to obtain an order from the High Court to access the phones of the person accused.

Chief Inspector Lanyo, however, did not oppose the grant of bail to the accused persons.

The matter has been adjourned to November 5, 2025.

Charles Yao Anyomi is alleged to have collected the money under the pretext of securing the complainant 5kg of gold, but did not deliver.

Charged with defrauding by false pretences, Anyomi pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mrs Susana Eduful, has admitted Anyomi to bail in the sum of GH¢600,000 with two sureties to be justified with title deeds in the name of the sureties.

It directed that the original document of the titled deed should be deposited at the Court’s registry.

The case has been adjourned to September 13, 2025.

Prosecution’s facts are that the complainant (name withheld) is a businesswoman residing at Madina, a suburb of Accra, while the accused is also a businessman and a resident at Spintex, Accra.

In December 2024, the complainant and the accused took a trip to South Africa.

Prosecution said that while the complainant was in South Africa, she had a call from her husband, who was on a business trip to Dubai to sell his gold.

As she was talking to her husband, the accused overheard their conversation concerning gold.

Anyomi then informed the complainant that if she could give him GHC500,000, he would be able to supply 5kg of gold to her.

Relying on this false representation, the prosecution said the complainant informed her husband, and together they transferred the said amount to the accused person’s Stanbic Bank account, mobile money account, as well as giving him cash.

After Anyomi had received the money, he ceased all forms of communication with the complainant and went into hiding.

The complainant later got alarmed and reported the case to the police for investigation.

Subsequently, Anyomi was arrested, and in his investigation caution statement, he admitted receiving the money but claimed to have handed it to one Charles.

Prosecution said Anyomi, however, was unable to lead the police to arrest the said Charles.

Residents say the messages were only discovered later in the morning, prompting them to rush to his home, where they found bloodstains on the floor but no sign of him.

A resident, speaking to Adom News on condition of anonymity, described the scene as disturbing, raising fears that Owusu may have been either killed and removed or kidnapped.

Police confirmed that his Android phone, which he used to send the messages, is missing, while two other mobile phones and a laptop belonging to him were found destroyed.

The Kasoa Divisional Police Command, in collaboration with the Central East Regional Police Command, has launched a manhunt for both the victim and the suspects.

Investigators say it is too early to determine whether Owusu was abducted or murdered but are pursuing all leads.

The accused, Priscilla Duah Birago, a 29-year-old National Service Person, and Charity Dede Tetteh, a 29-year-old beautician, were remanded for an additional two days. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit an offence, offensive conduct, and breach of the peace.

According to the prosecution, the two conspired to make comments such as: “We would have been happier if the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, was involved in the helicopter crash and dwarfs had eaten him up and that a lot of people are dying under his tenure of office.”

The case has been adjourned to September 4, 2025, when the accused are expected to reappear before the court.

Defence counsel, Mr. Samuel Kwesi Agyei, prayed the court to grant the women bail, arguing that the prosecution had not concluded its investigations. However, Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo opposed the bail application, explaining that investigations were still ongoing. He disclosed that the police had applied to the High Court for authorization to extract videos allegedly made by the accused persons from their mobile phones.

Presiding judge Mrs. Angela Attachie subsequently remanded the two into custody to reappear on Thursday, September 4.

Presenting the facts, the prosecution said on August 6, 2025, Charity and Priscilla hosted a live-streamed discussion on TikTok during which they made offensive remarks about President Mahama. The statements were later disseminated on Charity’s TikTok account, “Abena Birago.”

The accused were later arrested, and a forensic capture of the livestream was secured as evidence.

Aboku was convicted on the charge of stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

According to the prosecutor, Chief Inspector John Brahene, the complainant, Albert Nahi, a 56-year-old farmer from Akotoe village near Asesewa, reported the theft of his black Haojue motorbike with registration number M-21-GR 3036, valued at GH¢17,000.

He said on July 24, 2025, at about 0600hours, Mr. Nahi parked the motorbike at the Star Oil Filling Station in Asesewa before travelling to Accra.

However, when he returned the following day around 1600 hours, the motorbike was missing.

A manhunt was launched, leading to his arrest on August 16, 2025, at Asesewa.

He added that during interrogation, the accused admitted to the crime in the presence of an independent witness and led investigators to Anyesu Village, where the stolen motorbike was retrieved.

The prosecutor noted that the accused was charged and arraigned before court.

After considering the facts and his admission of guilt, the court sentenced Aboku to six years’ imprisonment.

Inspector Brahene said the sentence, according to the court, is intended not only to punish the offender but also to serve as a deterrent to others engaged in similar criminal activities within the Krobo enclave.

Preacher granted bail over alleged incest and assault case https://www.adomonline.com/preacher-granted-bail-over-alleged-incest-and-assault-case/ Fri, 29 Aug 2025 07:12:03 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2572343 The Kwabenya Circuit Court has granted bail to Godwin Asher, a 40-year-old preacher accused of incest and causing harm to his biological daughter.

Asher, who also works as a mason, was admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢60,000 with three sureties. He is expected to reappear before the court on September 23, 2025.

Appearing with his counsel, Godfred Anim Darko, Asher pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mr. Darko, renewing his bail application, argued that there was no sexual offence between Asher and his daughter. He said the accused was not a flight risk, had a fixed place of abode, and that “bail should not be used as punishment against the accused person.”

He further submitted that bail would enable Asher to prepare his defence and have access to legal counsel.

Inspector Diana Achana, who is leading the prosecution, left the decision to the discretion of the court. She told the court that the victim is currently residing with a relative at Pokuase, near Accra.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, a 64-year-old beautician and neighbour of the accused at Ashongman Estate, observed the victim bleeding from her right palm on August 2, 2025, and enquired about the cause.

The victim reportedly explained that she had gripped a cutlass in self-defence but sustained a deep wound to her hand when Asher forcefully pulled it from her during the alleged assault.

The complainant later assisted the victim to lodge a complaint with the police.

Investigations revealed that Asher had allegedly been engaging in sexual intercourse with the victim, with the last incident reported to have occurred on July 30, 2025.

A police medical form was issued, and the victim was examined and treated.

Homowo: Two dead, several injured in violence at Teshie Kpokpoi sprinkling ceremony https://www.adomonline.com/homowo-two-dead-several-injured-in-violence-at-teshie-kpokpoi-sprinkling-ceremony/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 07:44:34 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571916 Two people have died and several others sustained injuries following violent clashes during the Homowo Kpokpoi Sprinkling Ceremony in the Teshie Traditional Area on Tuesday, August 26.

The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Eddy Blessing and 27-year-old Patrick Maamah Martey Fio, were confirmed dead on arrival at the Lekma Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds. Several others are receiving treatment, with one person reported to be in critical condition.

The Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) of the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly said the disturbances erupted during the early morning festivities when rival groups disrupted the otherwise peaceful ceremony. Stones were hurled, and sporadic gunfire was recorded, forcing police to intervene.

Although calm was briefly restored to allow Paramount Chief Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akonfra III to perform his traditional rites, fresh clashes broke out later in the morning involving factions loyal to different traditional leaders.

The violent scenes created chaos at emergency units as family members rushed to hospitals, but police and health authorities managed to contain tensions. Calm has since been restored to the area.

MUSEC says investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, assuring the public that those responsible will face the full rigors of the law.

The council expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while urging residents and traditional factions in Teshie to remain calm and support ongoing investigations to safeguard lasting peace.

Exam malpractices can land offenders years in jail – GES cautions WASSCE candidates https://www.adomonline.com/exam-malpractices-can-land-offenders-years-in-jail-ges-cautions-wassce-candidates/ Thu, 28 Aug 2025 06:55:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571907 The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned candidates sitting for the ongoing 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) that examination malpractice could result in jail terms of between 12 and 15 years.

Nana Kumi Agyemang, the Dormaa Central Municipal Public Relations Officer of the GES in the Bono Region, said offenders also risk having their entire results cancelled or withheld.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Dormaa-Ahenkro, he disclosed that 2,179 candidates—comprising 1,075 males and 1,104 females—from four Senior High Schools (SHSs) are writing the exams in the Municipality. The schools include Christ Apostolic Church SHS, Dormaa SHS, Adehyeman SHS and Salvation Army SHS.

He explained that a monitoring team had been deployed to ensure the successful conduct of the exams, while the police were also engaged to maintain law and order. Mobile phone use at the centers, he said, had been banned, with invigilators and supervisors strictly enforcing the directive.

“The candidates are also under strict supervision to prevent the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the examination,” Nana Agyemang added.

He further warned candidates against carrying prohibited materials into the exam halls, urging them instead to be confident and courageous in tackling their papers.

According to him, the steady increase in the number of female candidates was encouraging, attributing it partly to government interventions such as the Free SHS policy and the distribution of free sanitary pads, as well as intensified education and counseling from girl-child education coordinators.

Labourer jailed 24 months for motorbike theft https://www.adomonline.com/labourer-jailed-24-months-for-motorbike-theft/ Wed, 27 Aug 2025 10:51:26 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571670 An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a labourer, Thomas Agbeko, to 24 months’ imprisonment for stealing an unregistered Peugeot motorbike, valued at GH¢20,000, belonging to his neighbour.

Agbeko admitted breaking a GH¢1,000 lock on the warehouse, entering, and making away with the bike. The Court, presided over by Mrs Susana Eduful, sentenced him to 24 months’ imprisonment for unlawful entry, theft, and causing unlawful damage. The sentences will run concurrently.

Meanwhile, his alleged accomplice, Solomon, remains on the run.

Police Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye-Okuffo, presenting the facts, said the complainant, Madam Betty Agyeman, is a trader and resident of Kanda-Accra, while Agbeko and Solomon are labourers who live nearby.

According to the prosecution, in August 2024, Madam Agyeman imported secondhand goods from Italy and engaged her houseboy and Agbeko to offload them into her warehouse. Agbeko was later tasked with weeding around the warehouse and asked to push an unregistered Peugeot motorbike with chassis number PJL000215J4892002 into the warehouse.

On August 10, 2025, at about 2:00 p.m., Agbeko informed a friend, a witness in the case, of his plan to steal the motorbike by cutting and joining the wires. A second witness, also a friend, discouraged him, warning that the police could arrest them.

However, on August 18, 2025, the complainant reported the theft of her motorbike. Agbeko was immediately suspected and subsequently arrested. He initially denied the offence but later admitted breaking into the warehouse and stealing the motorbike with Solomon, who remains at large.

Agbeko led the police to Agbogbloshie-Zongo Junction, claiming he had sent the motorbike to be sold, but he refused to reveal the exact person to whom he gave it. He was later charged and arraigned before the Court.

Circuit Court judge warns against multiple sale of Land https://www.adomonline.com/circuit-court-judge-warns-against-multiple-sale-of-land/ Tue, 26 Aug 2025 07:20:33 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2571072 A presiding judge of the Kwadaso Circuit Court has issued a stern warning against multiple sales of lands, emphasizing that anyone accused of such acts will face the full force of the law.

Jephthah Appau, a Relieving Judge of the Asante-Akuakwa Circuit Court in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality, reaffirmed the court’s commitment to fighting multiple land sales in the country.

The warning came as a 46-year-old farmer, Nana Kofi Adade, also known as Biney Solomon, appeared before the court charged with allegedly granting land without title. Judge Appau stated that any person accused of multiple land sales in his courts would be dealt with strictly under the law to deter others from similar acts.

He noted that granting land without title violates Section 277 (2A) of the Lands Act 2020, Act 1036, and disrupts buyers while tarnishing the image of traditional authorities who own the lands.

Nana Adade’s plea was not taken, and he was remanded in prison custody to reappear before the court on September 12, 2025, while investigations continue.

Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu told the court that last year, Nana Adade sold plot number 45, which Yaa Amankwah had already acquired from the late Nana Sarfo Akumah Abasi, former chief of Tabere near Abuakwa, at a cost of GH¢3,000 in 2001 and was issued an allocation paper and site plan. Adade allegedly sold the same plot to Bernard Owusu Sarpong for GH¢46,000 without title.

Prosecution indicated that in April this year, the complainant visited the plot and discovered that it had been cleared along with her 10 trips of sand, a trip of chippings, 800 cement blocks valued at GH¢39,460, and her one-bedroom floor-level foundation valued at GH¢3,500, all damaged.

The complainant was informed that Owusu Sarpong bought the land from Nana Adade and one Akwasi Anane, now at large, and carried out the clearing. A report was subsequently made to the Abuakwa Police, leading to Nana Adade’s arrest and prosecution.

According to police, the incident occurred on August 10, 2025.

The suspect, who had been pretending to be a caretaker at the Wa Regional Hospital, befriended the child’s mother, Ms. Kwofie Mwinbelle, shortly after she delivered on August 1.

Investigators say Maanibeh lured the mother to the market under the pretense of helping her purchase diapers. She then took advantage of the situation to flee with both the newborn and the woman’s handbag, which contained cash, a phone, and other personal items.

Following a swift probe led by ASP Stella Atukwia of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the suspect was tracked down and arrested on August 15 at her hideout in Nuobollie, a community in the Savannah Region.

Police confirmed that the baby was safely rescued and reunited with his mother. Some of the stolen belongings were also recovered.

Maanibeh appeared before the Wa District Magistrate Court on August 18 and was remanded into custody. She is scheduled to reappear on September 2, 2025.

The Regional Command has assured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property and commended the public for the vigilance and cooperation that led to the suspect’s arrest.

The body has since been sent to the St. Matthias Hospital morgue for preservation while police investigations are underway.

Jihadist attack near Ghana border leaves four Burkinabe Militiamen dead https://www.adomonline.com/jihadist-attack-near-ghana-border-leaves-four-burkinabe-militiamen-dead/ Mon, 25 Aug 2025 10:52:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570766 A weekend attack by the jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) in Burkina Faso has left four government militiamen dead, with their weapons looted.

JoyNews correspondent Eliasu Tanko reported from the Upper East Region that the incident occurred on Saturday, August 23, in Bittou, a town near the Ghanaian border in the Bawku Municipality, raising concerns about the ongoing security crisis in the region.

The victims were members of the Volunteers for the Protection of the Fatherland (VDP), a civilian auxiliary force created by the Burkinabe government to support its regular army against a persistent and deadly insurgency.

Military sources in Burkina Faso familiar with the matter said, “A small team of VDP went into the bush and encountered bad guys [jihadists]. Very wrong.”

This attack marks another deadly escalation in the area and follows a troubling pattern of similar incidents. JNIM, a prominent al-Qaeda affiliate operating in the Sahel, has also claimed responsibility for a June attack in Mongade, near Kulungugu, and another in March in Garanga, near Nware in Ghana’s Pusiga District.

These repeated incursions highlight the volatile security situation along the shared border between Burkina Faso and Ghana.

In response, Burkinabe security and defence forces have launched sweep operations along the borders with Ghana and Togo. The confirmed presence of the jihadist group in the border area underscores the cross-border nature of the threat and the potential for a spillover of the conflict.

The ongoing operation aims to neutralise threats and restore stability to affected communities.

The Western Central Regional Police Command, in a statement, explained that initial findings showed the first suspect confronted the victim at Aboso Mandelinde Junction, pushing him from behind and sparking a scuffle.

He later returned with the second suspect, 19-year-old Victor Vorgah, who was allegedly carrying a polythene bag containing a bottle of suspected acid.

The substance was reportedly poured on the victim’s face, leaving him with serious injuries.

Immigration officer’s murder: Chaos as family accosts suspect’s lawyer at court premises https://www.adomonline.com/immigration-officers-murder-chaos-as-family-accosts-suspects-lawyer-at-court-premises/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 15:14:44 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570190 Tensions flared outside the Adabraka District Court in Accra after proceedings in the case involving the alleged killing of immigration officer, Stephen King Amoah, were adjourned.

The second accused, Thomas Zigah, was brought before the court on Friday.

During proceedings, counsel for the accused pleaded with the court to allow his client to seek medical attention at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital instead of the Police Hospital, insisting that the suspect’s condition appeared deteriorated while in custody at the Railway Police Station.

The Counsel claimed the suspect had red eyes and required urgent care at an independent medical facility.

The prosecution opposed the request, noting that the suspect had already been taken to the Police Hospital twice, where he was treated and discharged.

They argued that defence counsel had not formally specified why Korle Bu should be preferred over the Police Hospital.

The court agreed, ruling that if the suspect’s health was in jeopardy, a formal application would have to be filed to request a change of hospital.

Defence counsel further suggested a one-week adjournment, reasoning that the prosecution had indicated the accused would be taken to the hospital again for the third time, and therefore a medical report should be provided as evidence.

The prosecution, however, opposed the adjournment, arguing that investigations had extended beyond Accra’s jurisdiction, requiring investigators to travel, and it would not be possible to conclude inquiries within a week.

The court declined the application for Korle Bu treatment and refused the one-week adjournment. The case was subsequently adjourned to September 4, 2025.

However, immediately after the adjournment, chaos broke out as members of the deceased officer’s family, who had been waiting outside, confronted the defense lawyer.

The family, visibly agitated, attempted to attack him as he made his way to his car.

The situation quickly escalated, forcing police officers present at the scene to intervene.

In the confusion, the lawyer was briefly mobbed before being escorted back into the courtroom for his safety.

He was later escorted to his car under tight police security to prevent further confrontation.

A joint security operation by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has led to the arrest of 39 individuals at Adom City Estate in Tema Community 25, Greater Accra, in what officials describe as a major blow to cybercrime networks.

The suspects were picked up in the early hours of Thursday, August 21, following weeks of intelligence-led surveillance. Among those detained were three minors and a woman believed to be an escort linked to one of the alleged ringleaders.

According to law enforcement sources, the raid specifically targeted a residence suspected to be operating as a cyber fraud hub. The operation, carried out under tight security, resulted in the seizure of several digital devices, including laptops and mobile phones, which are now being examined for forensic evidence.

All 39 suspects have since been transferred to the CID Headquarters in Accra, where they will undergo further interrogation and profiling. Authorities assured that due process will be followed, particularly in handling the cases of the minors involved.

Officials from the CSA explained that the swoop forms part of a broader national campaign to combat online fraud, financial scams, and other internet-based crimes that continue to affect individuals and institutions across the country.

The CSA also urged the public to remain vigilant against suspicious online activities, while the CID reiterated its commitment to dismantling cybercrime syndicates nationwide.

This latest operation adds to a series of recent raids as security agencies intensify efforts to contain the growing threat of cyber-enabled criminal activities.

“We would have been happier if the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, was involved in the helicopter crash and dwarfs had eaten him up, and that a lot of people are dying under his tenure of office,” the two are alleged to have said, among other abusive words.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Angela Attachie, did not take their pleas and remanded them into police custody to reappear on September 2, 2025.

This followed a request by the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, who prayed the court to remand the accused persons pending further investigations.

According to the facts presented, the Republic of Ghana is the complainant in the matter. On August 6, 2025, the accused persons hosted a live-streamed discussion on TikTok during which they allegedly made the offensive statements—conduct which the prosecution said was “likely to provoke a breach of peace.”

It further stated that Birago disseminated the remarks on her TikTok account under the name “Abena Birago.”

The two were subsequently arrested by law enforcement officers, and a forensic capture of the livestream was obtained as evidence.

Prosecution told the court that investigations were still ongoing.

Woman jailed 5 years for stealing pension funds to clear mother’s debt https://www.adomonline.com/woman-jailed-5-years-for-stealing-pension-funds-to-clear-mothers-debt/ Wed, 20 Aug 2025 19:40:07 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2569412 A Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 34-year-old former field officer of the National Trust Holding Company (NTHC) Trustee to five years’ imprisonment with hard labour for stealing GH¢96,490 belonging to some customers of the firm.

The convict, Comfort Asante, who pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing and forgery, claimed she took the money to help settle a debt owed by her mother.

After a full trial, the court, presided over by Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu, found her guilty on both counts and convicted her, stressing the need to deter others from similar offences.

The prosecutor, Chief Superintendent of Police Alex Odonkor, told the court that the complainant was NTHC Trustee, a company registered under the laws of Ghana to manage pension schemes.

He explained that the convict’s responsibilities included daily fieldwork to educate the public, register clients, and collect contributions on behalf of the company for the Tier Three Pension Scheme, also known as the SSNIT Informal Scheme Product (SISP).

Asante was also tasked with accurately recording contributions electronically into the company’s system using an official mobile phone issued to her, while also updating customers’ passbooks.

The system automatically generated receipt numbers, and text message alerts were sent to clients to confirm their payments.

Chief Superintendent Odonkor said that between 2 and 5 May 2023, the company received complaints from some contributors who had not been receiving alerts for payments made through Asante.

Upon reviewing the passbooks of the affected contributors, the company discovered discrepancies between the figures recorded in the books and those entered into the company’s system.

It was also detected that receipt numbers recorded in customers’ passbooks by Asante had not been generated by the company’s electronic system.

On 17 May 2023, the company lodged a complaint with the police, leading to Asante’s arrest. During investigations, she admitted the offence in her caution statement.

An internal audit carried out by the company’s auditors revealed that Asante had dishonestly appropriated a total of GH¢96,490, representing contributions made by 32 customers through her.

He pleaded guilty and was convicted on his own plea.

Sergeant Enoch Assan-Donkoh, prosecuting, told the court presided over by Charles Owusu Nsiah that Isaac Mensah Mbeah, the complainant, works as a delivery man and resides at Tamso, while Hagan lived at Tamso Compound.

He said on April 16, 2025, the complainant, after the day’s work, parked his royal motorbike with registration number M-25-WT278 at his shop located at the Tamso Municipal Assembly Basic School and retired to bed.

Prosecution said when the complainant woke up around 1:00 am, he detected that his motorbike had been stolen and therefore started looking for it within the neighbourhood.

Sergeant Assan-Donkoh narrated to the court that a witness who chanced on Hagan riding the complainant’s motorbike away informed him, and he reported the matter to the police in Tarkwa.

According to the prosecutor, after the theft, Hagan went into hiding and was nowhere to be found, but on May 11, 2025, the police had a tip-off that he was lodging at a friend’s house and was picked up.

He said during the investigation, Hagan led the police to the house of one Gucci, a friend of his, who is currently at large, and the royal motorbike was retrieved.

The seizure, made on August 14, 2025, involved an estimated 7,700 tablets of 250mg Tapentadol with a street value of GH¢11.5 million. The drugs were concealed in sacks aboard a truck with registration number TG 6891 BI, en route from Nigeria to Ghana.

Mr. Gorden Akurugu, Volta and Oti Regional Head of the FDA, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the interception was made during a routine surveillance operation. The driver, identified as Oliver Takra of Go Express Transport Company, and an agent were arrested and handed over to the police.

Two others, including a Nigerian man and a woman alleged to be the intended recipients, are assisting police investigations.

According to the FDA, the consignment violates Section 122 of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which prohibits the importation of any medicine, herbal product, medical device, cosmetic, or chemical substance without a permit.

Mr. Akurugu stressed that medicines are not permitted to enter the country through inland borders, with Kotoka International Airport and Tema Harbour being the only approved entry points. He warned that offenders face severe sanctions, including up to 25 years’ imprisonment.

He assured that the suspects would be fully prosecuted under the law, commending the collaborative role of CEPS, the National Investigations Bureau, the Narcotics Control Commission, and National Security in the operation.

“This interception is a clear signal that we are committed to protecting public health and ensuring the safety of Ghanaians,” he said.

Hairdresser granted GH¢150,000 bail over alleged death threats against Mahama https://www.adomonline.com/hairdresser-granted-gh%c2%a2150000-bail-over-alleged-death-threats-against-mahama/ Mon, 18 Aug 2025 08:25:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2568298 An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to a hairdresser, Yayra Abiwu, alias AY, in the sum of GH¢150,000 with three sureties, over alleged threats against President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

Yayra, who was absent from Wednesday’s hearing after reportedly collapsing and being admitted to the Police Hospital, faces charges of abetment of crime, threat of death, and making electronic communications containing death threats. She has pleaded not guilty.

The court ordered her to deposit her passport with the registry and report to the police every Monday. Two of her sureties must be gainfully employed.

Her lawyer, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, argued that Yayra has no criminal record, is not a flight risk, and that bail should not serve as punishment, especially since her phones have already been seized for forensic examination.

Her alleged accomplice, Prince Ofori (Fante Comedy), a trader from Abossey Okai, also appeared before the court. He faces charges of offensive conduct and knowingly permitting his platform to be used for offensive communication. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of GH¢100,000 with three sureties, under similar conditions.

A third suspect, Alberta Okrah (Ghana Jollof), is currently at large.

Prosecutor ASP Emmanuel Haligah opposed Yayra’s bail, citing video evidence in which she allegedly threatened to “kill the President.”

The prosecution said Alberta and Ofori hosted a live TikTok discussion in August 2025, during which they made offensive remarks about NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi and later issued death threats against President Mahama and his wife. Yayra was said to have actively participated in the programme.

The case has been adjourned to August 25, 2025.

Three arrested in Accra over possession, manufacture of illegal guns https://www.adomonline.com/three-arrested-in-accra-over-possession-manufacture-of-illegal-guns/ Fri, 15 Aug 2025 07:39:57 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2567275 The Accra Regional Police Command has taken three men into custody over claims they were involved in the possession and production of locally made pistols in Shiashi, a suburb of Accra.

The suspects have been named as 24-year-old Patrick Gyimah, a dispatch rider from Bawaleshie; 27-year-old Emmanuel Osei Yeboah, an electrical welder from Adenta Commando; and 29-year-old Charles Somuah, a private security guard from Ogbojo.

Police say the arrests stemmed from a routine patrol on August 7, 2025, when officers came across Gyimah in a secluded location under circumstances they deemed suspicious.

A search reportedly uncovered a locally made pistol in his pocket.

Follow-up investigations indicated that Gyimah had bought the firearm from Yeboah and Somuah in East Legon for GH₵2,000, paying GH₵800 upfront, with the rest to be settled after he received documentation for the weapon.

On August 8, 2025, Gyimah is said to have led officers to the other suspects’ residences. At Yeboah’s home, police allegedly found two more locally manufactured pistols, a toy pistol, one BB 12-bore cartridge, and a jackknife. Yeboah is reported to have admitted making the guns and selling one to Gyimah.

All three have been charged under the Arms and Ammunition Act, 1972 (NRCD 9) with manufacturing firearms without authority, possessing firearms without authority, and abetting the manufacture of firearms without authority. They pleaded not guilty in court and were remanded into custody, with their next appearance scheduled for August 22, 2025.

The Regional Police Commander cautioned the public against producing, selling, or holding illegal firearms, stressing that such offences carry serious legal consequences. He urged residents to report any suspicious activity or individuals to the nearest police station to help safeguard public safety.

Oguaa Traditional Council fines radio presenter GH₵30K, 3 sheep for unguarded utterances https://www.adomonline.com/oguaa-traditional-council-fines-radio-presenter-gh%e2%82%b530k-3-sheep-for-unguarded-utterances/ Thu, 14 Aug 2025 07:17:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2566882 The Oguaa Traditional Council, on Monday, imposed a fine of GH¢30,000, three male white sheep, and a carton of schnapps on Ato Trustworthy, a radio presenter with Elmina-based Ahomka FM, for making a misguided statement against the Council.

According to the Council, Mr. Trustworthy would have to carry a sheep around his neck from the Oguaa Akoto monument near London Bridge through Kingsway to the Oguaamanhen’s house (Efiekesem) and finally to Emintsimadze Palace, where traditional rites would be performed to appease the gods.

Additionally, Mr Trustworthy is expected to within 14 days, issue an unequivocal apology to the Council and the people of Cape Coast for bringing the name of the Oguaamanhen, Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, the Traditional Council, and the entire people of Oguaa into disrepute.

On Monday, the Council rescinded its decision not to accept his apology following insistent pleas by Mr Trustworthy’s team, led by Rev Father Joojo Gyepi-Garbrah of the Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Cape Coast.

Nana Benya, the linguist, announced the Council’s decision after a 45-minute deliberation amidst incessant pleas.

The Council had rejected his apology about a fortnight ago when he appeared before them.

It would be recalled that Mr. Trustworthy, in a viral TikTok video, made disparaging comments after an incident at the opening of the PANAFEST 2025 celebration when the Asafo Companies in Oguaa reportedly denied Nana Kwodwo Condua VI, the Omanhen of the Edina Traditional Area, entry to the durbar grounds at the Victoria Park in Cape Coast.

According to a source, Osabarimba Kwesi Atra as the host, should be the last to arrive at the durbar grounds; however, Nana Condua came after him in a palanquin and was asked to disembark and walk to the grounds, but he refused and went back.

Commenting on the issue in a video, Mr. Trustworthy, amidst other derogatory comments, referred to the Omanhen of Edina and Omanhen of Oguaa as “two small boys,” a remark seen as highly disrespectful by the Council and all well-meaning people.

Mr. Trustworthy had, sometime back, made similar misguided utterances about the Council but was cautioned, and his apology was accepted.

The Council said it was very determined to stop such conduct moving forward, adding that Mr. Trustworthy’s predicaments should serve as a powerful reminder to all media practitioners to exercise utmost respect and responsibility in their utterances, particularly when addressing revered traditional authorities and sacred cultural events.

“Let all journalists be guided by integrity, accuracy, and respect in their reporting to preserve the dignity of our traditions and communities,” the Council said.

Mr. Trustworthy, visibly humbled, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to make amends and pledged to fulfil the directives accordingly.

The Omanhen of Oguaa Traditional Area, though, did not sit in the deliberation; in a remark thereafter, emphasised the importance of upholding cultural values and respect for traditional authority, particularly from individuals in the media space who wield public influence.

“My palace is a place of peace and reconciliation. We welcome Ato Trustworthy’s remorse, but tradition must be followed for peace to prevail,” said Osabarimba.

On Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Tufohen of the Oguaa Traditional Area, Nana Kwame Edu VI, at a press conference, described the breach of protocol during the July 26 durbar as “regrettable and avoidable.”

He emphasised that PANAFEST was not merely a festival but a sacred occasion to honour their ancestors and promote unity.

Nana Edu explained that customary in Akan and coastal traditions demanded that the host Omanhen should be the last to arrive at a grand durbar, symbolising his role as Commander-in-Chief.
